News from the Venue

A Note from the Editor

A Shout Out for Volunteers! As I’m sure you’re already aware, the Venue in Holt is the home of the Holt Community Centre Association, a registered Charity of 47 years standing, that has provided a facility for the town and its inhabitants to enjoy various activities, clubs and events. This is my 4th year of Chairing the Committee, and I’m pleased to say that we have managed to hugely improve the facility and ensure its future during that time, and that is in no small way because of the dedication and hard work of the volunteers who stand alongside us to maintain the building, run events, cook, organise, fundraise and a raft of other activities all geared towards ensuring that Holt keeps its Community and Arts Centre.

The Platinum Jubilee weekend is almost upon us, the Queen is the first British monarch to have reigned for 70 years, quite an achievement! Most of us get to give up work and enjoy a leisurely retirement. There are lots of celebrations happening to mark this once-in-a-lifetime event. Do look in the forthcoming events for something near you.

If you prefer to mark the occasion in a quieter fashion and do something to benefit the environment, why not ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee’? This is the Queen’s Green Canopy tree planting initiative to create a legacy to benefit people, wildlife and the environment for the future.

You can get a free ‘tree pack’ by going online at www.woodlandtrust.org.uk You can even register your tree on the QGC map and if you are planting as a school or community group, you can have a free tree delivered during the planting season this year. Whatever you are up to over the Jubilee weekend, bunting at the ready! Enjoy your May magazine. Jo – Editor. Here are the deadline dates and publishing dates for the next 3 magazines.

Month June July August

Copy deadline Tuesday 7th June Tuesday 5th July Tuesday 2nd August

Publishing date Friday 17th June Friday 15th July Friday 12th August

Interested in joining Freemasonry?

Contact your Local Blakeney Lodge at l6679sec@gmail.com for details and information.

There are many ways of getting involved, and we welcome anyone of any background or ability to join the family of volunteers currently at the Venue. In fact, it is a priority to ensure that we give opportunity to anyone who would like to volunteer with us, regardless of ability, age or experience. By far our largest project that relies on volunteers is the Community Café, which started 7 years ago and provides a hearty 2 course freshly cooked lunch for around 70 people every Thursday. If you think you may be interested in joining the team, please do give us a call on the number below or drop in during the week for a chat; we’re a very friendly bunch! Part of the ongoing programme of improvements is to look at the outside areas, and we are very excited to be developing the patio area this year, to improve the look of the garden and develop the planting. Our amazing gardener, Chris Bland, has done great work to the front of the building, planting up our new barrels and the front beds, and we are so blessed to have him on board, so a huge public ‘Thank You’ Chris! If you feel a burning desire to design and help us to develop the outside areas, please do get in touch. We are of course looking forward once again to hosting some of the amazing acts that are coming to the Holt Festival this year; as ever, Anwen Hurt has done a superb job of bringing incredible Arts based activities to Holt and making it as available and inclusive as possible so that we can all enjoy the Festival and I hope you will come along and see some of them.

I’m so pleased to announce that we now have our first Apprentice at the Venue; Nadia Jolly has joined the team, after volunteering for 6 months and showing outstanding commitment, initiative and enthusiasm. She brings a wonderful energy and passion for community work, which coupled with her work ethic makes her a great asset to the Charity. If you would like any more information regarding volunteering or activities and groups that meet at the Venue, please call 01263 713427, email info@thevenueholt.com or check out our website at www.thevenueholt.com. The AGM for the Holt Community Centre Association is to be held at the Venue on Monday 30th May at 7pm. Carolyn Burn, Chairperson

Our speaker this month was Rosie Wilkin who came appropriately dressed for her talk on Medieval Toys. It was informative and interesting with examples of toys from the period.

A walking group has started, and the first walk will take place very soon. Two outings have been confirmed, one to Thursford and one to the End of the Pier Show in Cromer.

At the beginning of April, a coffee morning was held at WI member Jill Stimpson home and a sum of £120 was raised for the Ukraine Appeal. Hot cross buns were enjoyed with tea and coffee.

‘MY NORFOLK, MY HOLT' with John Jarvis

running a riding school in County Durham, and a nursery. She lived in the Highlands for a while, coming back to Norfolk at the age of 30. She came back to Holt because she had a son, and thought Norfolk was a good place to bring up a family. Besides which all her family were living here. However, she found that even the scant facilities that existed when she was growing up, were no longer here.

‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ with Julie Alford BEM (Co-founder and Manager of Holt Youth Project), Wednesday 18th May. This is a second promised interview with Julie discussing her life post-18. The first, in March 2018, was a fascinating journey up to the age of 18. We will now be discussing her life and work since then, focusing on the Holt Youth Project: how it started, what it is and why it is still so important today. After the interval there will be a chance to ask questions and share thoughts and ideas. Arrive at 6.30pm, when the bar will be open, for a prompt 7.00pm start. The evening will finish 8.30-ish. Advance booking is essential as places are limited. People can turn-up on the day, at the door, but risk not being admitted. To book: contact The Venue on 01263 713427, call into the centre office Mon/Wed/Thurs/Fri or email: info@thevenueholt.com

She worked for the Red Cross and as a voluntary community carer. She ran a community shop, a clothing agency called ‘Lilies of the Fields’ and a youth-club called ‘Cross-Beats’ at St Andrews. This overlapped with volunteer work with children and running a youth group in her own home. Which in turn led to the buying of the land, due to the amazing efforts of some very wonderful people, particularly Dick Copas and Ray Swain, who made the dream and the start of the ‘Holt Youth Project possible. After the opening of the Project’s purpose-built building in 2004 Julie has managed and supported the team to create and deliver the vital service it provides today.

Julie was born in West Runton in 1955 and lived in Norfolk till she was 18. She then kicked her heels for 3 years – grape-picking, working at Butlins,

Is Holt Hall now lost for the people of Holt and North Norfolk?

For the last two years Friends of Holt Hall worked tirelessly with a number of professional and experienced educational prospective purchasers to produce business plans for a viable and vibrant future for residential and day outdoor and environmental learning at Holt Hall with more community access. These plans included new opportunities for employment and activities for Holt and North Norfolk. These were all rejected in favour of a more substantial bid. If the property ends up in the hands of a private buyer all the planned public benefit will probably be lost.

I am not a politician or an activist, but Chairman of the Friends of Holt Hall. Among the Trustees of this long-established local charity existing to support the Outdoor Learning work of Norfolk Education are those who have lived or worked at Holt Hall. All have witnessed the transformative effect and service which school visits to the Hall have provided for generations of Norfolk Children. Once the Council had made the decision to dispose of this superb public asset, we sought to ensure that its rich legacy, developed over decades by successive hard-working Holt Hall staff, would not be totally lost.

Various articles about the sale give an undeserved gloss on the Council’s decision, with the only possible crumb of comfort being within the Holt Chronicle in a statement by Holt area Councillor Vardy stating that he will be ‘working hard to find a positive outcome for the children of North Norfolk’ Hopefully he will be more successful than numerous others who have tried to ensure that money from asset stripping is properly ring-fenced and not simply lost into the general purse.

Like many other people in the Holt area concerned about the loss of this valuable resource, we have significant professional experience in education, as well as in the mental health needs and well-being of young people. There is now an added opportunity for places like Holt Hall to support the proposed new GCSE in Natural History, along with preparation for worried young people about climate change. Holt Hall, as we and others have demonstrated, but apparently to deaf ears, could have been a hub of best practice in sustainable growth as we face climatic and environmental crises. In the context of Holt Hall, the remote Norfolk County Council have demonstrated little knowledge of these aspects, or indeed willingness to engage seriously with partnership initiatives to help local communities to thrive. They have chosen to argue that they have to accept the highest bidder. This was not spelled out adequately during our discussions with them. Our commitment to the work of Holt Hall, as demonstrated through the Friends of Holt Hall Bursary Scheme for disadvantaged children has been wholly about supporting people.

email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

She has thrown all her passion, energy and dedication into the young people of Holt, because unlike other market towns, Holt has no Secondary School, and therefore no Community Youth Provision. Julie has worked tirelessly to address this issue and to try to fill that gap. “The greatest reward is empowering young people to achieve their dreams and aspirations whatever their background or need” Julie loves Holt and Norfolk. It is where her heart is and will always be her home.

DO YOU NEED HELP?

If you have a living crisis, we can help you with: • Emergency Food Parcels • Accessing Local Agencies • Your Energy Bills Contact North Norfolk Foodbank on 07826 376343 Email: info@northnorfolk.foodbank.org.uk Website: northnorfolk.foodbank.org.uk

It is wrong for Council officials to imply that disappointment at the sale to a private buyer is based on “close ties to the building”. We will continue to consider how we might best continue to support young people.

Feed-back from schools showed Holt Hall to be perfectly adequate for residential courses, but the Council now curiously claims that a massive maintenance bill appears to be needed. Proper, routine maintenance in the recent past could have avoided this. Our own carefully costed plans for the whole site and those by other potential purchasers demonstrated that better and more imaginative use of the whole estate would have more than covered any perceived financial deficit. Sadly, a County Council, apparently dominated by concerns about financial aspects, but willing to spend millions on infrastructure and administrative projects, continues to lack the imagination for creative inter-departmental or community initiatives. Here we have a gem of a small estate, designated as a County Wildlife Site, adjacent to a thriving town community and schools, which, when allowed, have all enjoyed and used as a significant publicly owned asset. A Monthly Memory Swap

If you have fond, even precious, memories of growing-up and/or living in Holt, why not join a new ‘Monthly Memory Swap’ in the lounge/bar area of The Venue.

Following on from interviews for ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ and other earlier initiatives which have recorded people’s memories, we propose starting what might become a monthly event, an opportunity allowing more people, particularly those who don’t like the idea of being the focus of an individual interview, to share their memories of the Holt they know and love.

The first ‘memory swap’ will take place on Tuesday the 24th of May, from 3.00 – 5.00pm, over a cup of tea or coffee. It is suggested that sessions might be stimulated by photos (perhaps of particular streets or locations in old Holt), films, and archive interviews with earlier residents.

Everyone is welcome, either to come along, to hear the memories of others or to share memories of their own. If you know of anyone you think might be interested in joining us and ‘sauntering down memory lane’, please pass this invitation on.

Why not come along and swap some new memories for old. Booking for this event would be helpful but is not essential. It would just be useful to have an idea of potential numbers. To book: contact The Venue on 01263 713427 or email: info@thevenueholt.com

County Councillor Report for Holt Division

Dear Readers,

from County Councillor Eric Vardy

Norfolk County Council owned companies encouraged to cut carbon This first item is one that I fully support. As from the 1st May I became the County Councils Cabinet Lead on the Environment and Waste. Council-owned companies are being encouraged to reduce their carbon emissions, as part of the county council’s efforts to help Norfolk become carbon neutral. Norse Group, Hethel Innovation Ltd, Repton Property Developments Ltd and Independence Matters are the focus of a report to the county council’s cabinet on 3 May. Each company will be encouraged to set out carbon reduction targets once it better understands its own carbon footprint. If cabinet backs the proposal, there will be a follow-up report which outlines the progress of each company in establishing specific carbon reduction targets. Further report to follow when initiates are instigated and reported on.

Uptake for apprenticeships in Norfolk continues upward trend The upward trend in apprenticeship starts is continuing to increase in Norfolk. A 35% increase in apprenticeships has been reported between August 2021 and January 2022, with 3026 new apprenticeships started in the last 6 months. Apprenticeships are a government-funded scheme which gives individuals of any age the opportunity to build a new future whilst earning and learning and enables businesses to harness new skills and improve their productivity and sustainability at the same time. Local employers, training providers, and Norfolk County Council’s dedicated team of experts at Apprenticeships Norfolk, boosted by incentives and grants, are all working together to make apprenticeships easier to access and to understand for individuals.

Jubilee Slates in Holt Thank you….

As a reader of this magazine, you will be

aware that the Holt Society, in conjunction with the Holt Town Council have been fundraising, in order to purchase two commemorative slates for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations next month.

As Chairman of the Holt Society, I would, on behalf of our committee, like to extend our thanks to all those who have generously donated to this appeal. So far, we have raised £4,742. £3,371 of which has come from our membership and £971 from friends of Holt, both local and from far and wide.

We are now focusing our fundraising toward the businesses of Holt, in order that all sections of society have the opportunity to support this unique celebration. Our understanding is that there are some 200 businesses in Holt and we have hand delivered letters to the vast majority of these. At the time of writing (26 April) we wish to extend our sincere thanks to the businesses who have already contributed £400 in total, so hopefully more donations will be received.

We also thank Love Holt, The Holt Town Council, Gresham’s School and Bakers & Larners for their advice and support in promoting our appeal, through their various communication channels and mail shots. Without this co-operative support the promotion of our work would have been far more difficult.

In agreement with The Town Council and the Owner of and Tenant of Feeney’s, we are pleased to confirm that the Slates will be located against the rear wall of Feeney’s, in Fish Hill. Despite the fact that we are just under half way to our fundraising target,

Norfolk Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans Norfolk County Council has secured a revenue grant from central government to support the development of a Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) for Norfolk. The LCWIP for Norfolk plays an important part in delivering the Government’s strategy for encouraging everyone to cycle and walk more, especially when making short journeys in towns and cities. Increased levels of active travel, especially for shorter journeys in towns, will help to reduce congestion, improve air quality, and benefit the environment and local economy. The County Council is working in partnership with all district and borough councils to create the plan. The Norfolk LCWIP builds on plans already completed for Great Yarmouth, King’s Lynn and Greater Norwich. The objective of the plan is to develop a countywide walking and cycling network, and identify infrastructure improvements over the short, medium and long term. The development of the Norfolk LCWIP also supports the delivery of a low carbon, well-connected transport network in Norfolk. The plan for Norfolk is in the early stages of development and to support with the development of the plan the County Council has created an online survey to help obtain insights into current levels of cycling and walking within Norfolk and to identify places where people feel they want to be better connected on foot or cycle. The initial Norfolk LCWIP engagement runs from the 5 April to 30 May. to review and comment on detailed proposals within the Norfolk Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan in Autumn 2022 go to www.Norfolk.gov.uk The initial Norfolk Cycling and Walking Survey is open from 5 April to 30 May.

Mindfulness through Art

Norfolk County Council Adult Learning Wellbeing Programme Coordinator John Madeley contacted Age Concern North Norfolk last year to see if we were interested in them delivering courses to our clients in the Day Centre. The courses are art and craft based but with mindfulness and well-being at their heart. As face-to-face tutoring might have been difficult, they even gave us a laptop to facilitate on-line courses. We have had several sessions with the tutor Jennie and have covered art inspired by music, rock painting and fingerprint art. The workshops are fun and give our clients the opportunity to express themselves using a range of art materials and music. The sessions also teach our clients about famous artists and their techniques while looking at strategies to help with well-being.

Several people made Easter cards and one gentleman made a ‘Get Well’ card for his wife using his fingerprints to depict a row of balloons. His wife was thrilled to receive it. Rock Painting All our clients demonstrate exceptional concentration during these workshops and gain a sense of achievement and feelings of well-being and confidence afterwards.

Fingerprint Art

These sessions will continue for several weeks at the centre and are helping support staff to develop future activities building on what they have also learned. We like to ensure every day at the centre is as varied and interesting as possible and if you would like to try a Taster Day yourself, please ring Alison on 01263 821188 to arrange it.

Weybourne WI Learn how to Create a Family Tree

Over 30 members met at Weybourne Village Hall on Wednesday, 6th April.

The afternoon began with the customary business meeting and forthcoming events were discussed, which included an outing to Great Yarmouth in June and the ACWW walk, which was to take place on 19th April. A cheque for £100 had recently been sent to ACWW, which comprised of donations from the last walk and proceeds from our competition table.

Our speaker for the afternoon was Debbie Bradley, who is a member of Sheringham WI and also a professional family history researcher. (DB Genealogy).

Debbie gave us a very interesting power point presentation on how to create a family tree and showed the variety of sources which can be used to discover information about our ancestors. She suggested we start with ourselves at the bottom of the tree and build from there. She stressed the importance of speaking to relatives, who may have family stories and photographs, or have even begun to research a family tree themselves. In addition, a lot of information can be found online, or from birth, marriage and death certificates, census results and service records. There are numerous free resources available and libraries often provide access to free websites, if you are a member. Debbie finished with the warning ‘don’t believe all that you read’, as apparently, there are often errors in information that has been recorded on certificates, etc. We all found the talk fascinating and there were several questions from members. I suspect many of us will have been inspired to make a start on finding out more about our ancestors. Pat King gave a vote of thanks.

“No Fault” Divorce is now Happening

From 6 April 2022 the most radical reform of divorce law for decades came into operation. Previously a divorce could only be based upon “fault” with a husband or wife blaming the other for the breakdown of their marriage. That has now changed and is no longer required.

The new law includes significant changes in terminology that Solicitors and clients will need to come to terms with. More fundamentally however is the potential for a divorce to take place on a joint application and ending the possibility of someone seeking to defend the divorce. There is now a minimum period of 20 weeks from the commencement of the divorce to the application for a Conditional Order (previously Decree Nisi). This is to enable a cooling off period and time for reflection whether it is actually referred to that or not in the legislation. It remains to be seen whether reflection will take place because the vast majority of people starting a divorce will have come to the conclusion that they wanted a divorce before the proceedings were started rather than mid-point. There then remains the same six-week period between the Conditional Order (Decree Nisi) and Final Order (Decree Absolute) as previously. A minimum period of 26 weeks now applies to a divorce. This is about the length of time

outset by allegations made in the actual divorce. If you are considering starting a divorce application or are already in the process of making one, our family department here at Clapham & Collinge are here to provide you with advice and support for any queries you may have regarding the new legislation.

that a divorce was taking place under the old legislation although with all these timescales it is subject to potential difficulties with the digital format and procedure that the Court now has. There is also the potential for a Respondent to try to delay a divorce by not acknowledging receipt of the application but the opportunities to delay or try to stop a divorce are much more limited under the new rules and procedure.

If you would like to seek legal advice on any family law issues, please contact our dedicated Client Relations Team on 01263 823398, email enquiries@ clapham-collinge.co.uk or visit www.clapham-collinge.co.uk

Overall, the aim is to try to ensure that the divorce itself can take place more amicably. The position remains that in most cases it is rare for a husband and a wife both to want a divorce and it is often only one party that is *This article is provided for general seeking this whereas the other might be information purposes only and does not reluctant or not want the divorce at all. SAINT ANDREW’S & ALL SAINTS NEWS The Parish of Holt with High Kelling

Dear friends, Across the country people are preparing to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. In communities the length and breadth of the nation, events are being planned to mark Her Majesty’s life of service and contribution to our country. The majority of the population in the UK have known no other monarch. For some 70 years, Queen Elizabeth has provided us with that sense of continuity and stability in an ever-changing society. She has served the people of our country faithfully and dutifully and fulfilled her promise, that her “whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we belong.” Therefore, it is only right that the nation pauses over a four-day bank holiday at the beginning of June to say thank you and celebrate her long reign, the like of which we may never see again. At her coronation on the 2nd June 1953 the Queen was anointed with the holy oil of Chrism by the then Archbishop of Canterbury, Geoffrey Fisher. It was one of three oils blessed by the bishop for use in the ministry of the Church to anoint those to be baptised (christened), the sick and the dying, and those to confirmed, or ordained or crowned monarch. The oil of chrism is olive oil mixed with balsam and blessed. The oil symbolizes strength, and the fragrant balsam represents the “aroma of Christ” Anointing with chrism oil signifies the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is used to consecrate someone or something to God’s service. There is no doubt that Queen Elizabeth sees her reign as one of service, not only to our nation but also to God. Her inspiration for her life of duty and service lay in the teachings and example of Christ by which she tries to lead her life and her steadfast of faith is a shining example for us all. I hope that the forthcoming Jubilee weekend will unite the country and bring communities together to celebrate and give thanks for Her Majesty’s, long reign of faithful and loving service. God save the Queen! Every blessing,

Fr. Howard

North Norfolk u3a ‘Summer Happenings’

The North Norfolk ‘u3a’ is 30 years old this year and to celebrate it is holding three events to mark the occasion. Because the North Norfolk ‘u3a’ covers a large geographical area they will be spread out over the county: Fakenham in May, Sheringham in July and Cromer in September.

Members of the u3a will be invited to one of the three informal gatherings which will provide the opportunity to socialise with old friends, meet with new and enjoy afternoon tea. The National ‘u3a’ organisation, the Third Age Trust, came into being forty years ago so it’s a great opportunity to celebrate the ‘u3a’ both locally and nationally.

What is this ‘u3a’ this ‘third age’ and is it for me? Basically it’s that time in your life (not necessarily chronological) when you can undertake learning for its own sake. Members are certainly not working towards qualifications they’re simply learning for pleasure. There is no distinction between learners and teachers – everyone could take a turn at being both if they wished. If you didn’t know the ‘U3A’ started in France at the Faculty of Social Sciences in Toulouse in 1973. The UK ‘u3a’ movement is based loosely on the French model and aims to encourage groups of people in their third age to come together and continue their enjoyment of learning in subjects of interest to them.

Garden-lovers Gear up for Creake Abbey’s Annual Plant Lovers’ Day

N'famady Kouyaté

Lemn Sissay

On Saturday 28th May 2022, the region’s garden-lovers will flock to Creake Abbey, the beautiful monastic site three miles south of Burnham Market in north Norfolk, for Plant Lovers’ Day, its annual botanical bonanza. Diana Brocklebank Scott, founder of Creake Abbey, said: “Gardening has never been such an important resource for nurturing ourselves as well as the environment. We are all becoming increasingly aware of the impact that wildlife-friendly gardens can have on biodiversity as well as on carbon capture. With the correct care and attention, our gardens should fizz with plant and insect life. Creake Abbey’s Plant Lovers’ Day is the perfect place to refresh your garden, regardless of its size, with new, interesting and healthy plants. Don’t miss out on this chance to put a spring in your step, reinvigorate your garden and help the environment too.” As always, visitors to Creake Abbey will be offered delicious breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea by the Creake Abbey Café & Food Hall together with takeaway coffee, cake and snacks. The gate opens at 10am and closes at 4pm. Entrance to the plant fair is £5.00 per adult and there is no charge for under 16s. Dogs on leads welcome but must not be left in cars. Visitors may also browse the wares and services of Creake Abbey’s seven resident independent shops and services free of charge. Once again, proceeds from the day will go to Wells email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

Community Hospital Trust at Wells-next-the-Sea. Over the past 14 years Creake Abbey has raised over £28,000 for the hospital through its annual Plant Lovers’ Day and subsequent donations. The hospital has been providing health and wellbeing services in Norfolk for more than 100 years. Alongside clinics, the hospital is spearheading services for the community including a foodbank, community café, social groups as well as a program of exercise classes. Registered charity no. 1154540 Sarah Peberday, General Manager of Wells Community Hospital Trust, said: “Wells Community Hospital Trust is delighted to be chosen once again to be the beneficiary of the 2022 Plant Lovers’ Day at Creake Abbey. Alongside the many services we offer, our team has developed several initiatives to support the emerging needs of local people of all ages to ensure their health and wellbeing. We are particularly proud of our food bank. Creake Abbey’s vital support will allow all of this hard work for our local community to continue.” Now in its 15th year, this much-loved horticultural event will showcase the best quality plants from around 30 nurseries from Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex as well as leading nurseries from further afield. Excellent-value perennials, annuals, exotics, bulbs, shrubs, climbers and classics such as roses will be on offer. Visitors are encouraged to buy direct from the nurseries or pre-order specific plants with collection on the day and to take full advantage of the advice and inspiration on offer from the region’s leading plantsmen. Pineapple Upside Down Cake

The recipe makes a single layer cake, but for a special occasion you could double the quantity of sponge mix and bake one layer without the pineapple, then sandwich it with your choice of jam and cream or buttercream. A feast fit for a king, or queen! Ingredients

With the Platinum Jubilee around the corner, I got to thinking what would be a good recipe for this month? I decided it should be something retro but appropriate for making and sharing if you are having a get together for the occasion. I remember my mother making this cake when I was little, and what a treat it was served up with custard, or on special occasions, cream, (or in those days Dream Topping, remember that?).

Running Wild!

Large tin of pineapple rings Glace cherries 4 tablespoons soft light brown sugar 235g softened butter plus extra for greasing 175g caster sugar 3 eggs, beaten ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 175g self-raising flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 2 tablespoons whole milk Method

Preheat the oven to 180C. Thoroughly grease a deep 20cm (8 inch) round cake tin (two if doubling the mixture to make a sandwich cake).

Drain the pineapple rings and dry off on kitchen paper. Melt together the soft brown sugar and 60g

They say the best things in life are free...which is just as well given how expensive everything else is suddenly becoming. If you’re feeling the pinch financially, one easy way to save some money is with your food shopping. I find that making a meal list for the week (I know, it’s another chore, but so worth it) saves me from falling into the temptation traps set for us by the evil geniuses behind supermarket marketing. Given how important feeding yourself is, and how much we enjoy it, is it really too hard to give yourself half an hour to decide just what you fancy eating for the next week? The other outrageously easy win is to eat wild food. Instead of looking at nettles like the enemy, encourage them in your garden and consider them a crop! They are so tasty and good for you, and really easy to incorporate into your recipes, as below.

of the butter in a saucepan over a gentle heat. Spoon into the bottom of the cake tin and arrange the pineapple rings in the bottom of the tin. Place a glace cherry on the centre of each ring.

Sift the dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl, add the eggs, vanilla, remaining butter and milk and mix with a hand mixer (or by hand) until smooth and well combined. Spoon the mixture over the pineapple rings carefully, level and bake in the oven for about 30 minutes or until risen and golden. When cooked, leave in the tin to cool for a few minutes, run a knife around the edge to loosen and place a serving plate over the tin. Hold the tin and plate together firmly and turn over. Remove the cake tin and leave to cool. NB: If making a sandwich cake, double the sponge mix ingredients, divide between two cake tins and omit the pineapple and melted sugar/ butter mixture for the bottom sponge. Happy Jubilee, Jo – editor

Add the nettles and stir until wilting down, and then the stock to cover the vegetables, plus a little more. Bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes and add the peas and mint. Simmer for a further 5 minutes until the peas are tender, then blitz with a hand blender until smooth. Stir through the miso paste to finish and check the seasoning. Carolyn Burn

They also make a gorgeous tea, when paired with other herbs or even fruit. During the war years, people picked and dried wild blackberry leaves to use as a tea substitute, and of course the blackberry is prized among hedgerow fruit in the Autumn...and it’s free! At the moment, you can easily pick Garlic Mustard which can be cooked or eaten raw as a salad, Wild Garlic, which can be gently wilted or again eaten raw in salad, and my favourite at the moment is Cleavers, otherwise known as Sticky Willy, a rampant weed that is incredibly good for you, and can be cooked into soup or brewed into tea. Save money by getting creative with the wild harvest available to us, and base meals around deals on potatoes, vegetables, pasta and rice. Use more dried beans and pulses in your recipes to bulk them out, such as lentils in bolognaise or chilli and beans in soups and try to bulk buy staples such as tinned tomatoes, frozen vegetables, oatmeal and pasta. Make your own flat breads and garlic bread with strong wholemeal or white flour, and buy sundried tomatoes and roasted peppers in oil, making use of the oil in the jars for cooking to combat the recent shortages in cooking oil. And of course, grow your own veg and herbs if you can, to supplement what you buy; seeds are cheap to buy, and you can use old yoghurt or butter tubs and pots to grow your seeds in. When picking wild plants, don’t take the whole plant, try to pick away from busy roads and wash everything well. You can easily check online to identify the right plants to pick. Happy Wild Gleaning!

Nettle and Pea Soup

A little olive oil 1 large white onion, finely chopped 1 large jacket potato or a good handful of new potatoes, skin on and chopped into chunks A couple of sticks of celery, chopped 20 to 30 heads of nettle, leaves stripped from the stalk and well washed Vegetable stock Half a small pack of frozen peas, defrosted 4 to 5 sprigs fresh mint, chopped Tsp miso paste, mixed with a little warm water (optional)

Gently fry the onion and celery in a little oil over a medium heat for 5minutes, and then add in the chopped potato.

Galileo’s dad wanted to call him Fred. But his mum said he should have a cool name just in case. So, Galileo Galilei it was. The young Galileo was obsessed with the sky. As his father would say “he was born sunny side up”. But he warned his young son: “Stop looking up all the time or you’ll get run over”. By an early age Galileo figured there were lots of stars. Lots. And he wondered how he could get a closer look. He considered being loaded into a canon and fired up to see them. But he thought his mother might not be too happy with that. To the stars? In those days most people didn’t go far. Down the pub and back was as near an adventure as many got. A few brave souls got into boats. Some were never seen again. “That proves,” said his father “the world is flat. They fell off the edge.” He knew his science. In Galileo’s home town of Pisa some would gaze in puzzlement at the leaning tower. And ask why? Galileo had an idea. Having thrown all kinds of objects from the top and apparently failing to kill anyone, he discovered the speed of fall of an object was not proportional to its weight. Eat your heart out Aristotle. In Spring 1609 Galileo heard about an invention in the Netherlands which brought things closer. Aha, he thought. I don’t need a canon after all. Having mastered the art of lens grinding, he built a 20x magnifying telescope. Then he set it up to look at the Moon and found wasn’t made of cheese. He went on to discover Jupiter’s moons Ganymede, Europa, lo and the rings of Saturn. Not a bad day’s work for a college dropout. When not gazing skyward he had a terrestrial star which shone bright. He had “an arrangement” with a Venetian woman, Marina Gamba, who told him he needed to get out more. Clearly, he didn’t because they had two daughters and a son. In those days suggesting the earth goes round the sun wasn’t exactly greeted enthusiastically by the perceived science of the day. As for rocks falling from space, oh come on! The Italian Inquisition was on hand to disabuse people of all such nonsense. The ageing Galileo got on the wrong side of them and was put under house arrest for the rest of his life. At least his mum was right: Galileo had a better ring to it than Fred. © copyright: this article may not be reproduced without the express permission of the author.

Treading on snakes and scorpions…. Greetings from Malawi!

A double-headed snake under our table, scorpion in the shower, ants in the kettle, flies in the fridge ….Malawi has diverse wildlife, but perhaps not quite as exotic as African lions and zebra! Then outside the house there was the metre-long lizard that attacked with it razor-sharp tail, killed while attacking our pigs. The world of nature blends seamlessly into the lives of those in the rural areas—the climate affects all.

Cathren’s new house!

Thanks UK friends, for your valued support!

Reconstruction, after two cyclones ripped through the area in recent months destroying lives and livelihoods, is ongoing. 2 of the 5 houses we’re building for vulnerable families are complete. Cathren, 42 years old, from Lolo Village, lives with disabilities while caring for her 4 children. When her house completely collapsed in the winds and rain, much of her household equipment and food was also damaged and destroyed. She had no resources to rebuild or replace her goods…. Now, just 3 months later, she and her family are poised, ready to move into their new home as soon as it’s dry. Esnala, elderly and frail, is also relieved and delighted to have had her home rebuilt. The winds ripped off the original roof, where the 3 generations lived, and battered down walls. It couldn’t be repaired, but it was meticulously taken apart, undamaged bricks saved, thousands added, and a new house constructed.

Two little needy families, now safe and secure for decades to come……

Just a couple of the dozens of buildings we’ve constructed following the cyclones, helping thousands…..

New Discovery Trail in Glandford

A process is now in place to recruit.

A further Trail of Discovery is being launched by the Glaven Valley Arts Society - for children aged 8 to 12 (but really for people of all ages). The trail is at St. Martin’s Church, Glandford and can be easily combined with a trip next door to the Shell Museum. The aim is to encourage children to explore the church building, to learn about it and to enjoy the experience. The style of the trail is similar to that adopted for the trail of discovery at St. Margaret’s Church, Cley-next-the-Sea, just a mile away. Fourteen questions cover some very interesting features of St. Martin’s church including artistic features of the font, altar, pulpit, and stained-glass windows. There are challenges to find the clues left by two master wood carvers who were part of the team of craftsmen builders and questions about the bench depicting the faithful dog of Sir Alfred Jodrell, owner of nearby Bayfield Hall who was responsible for restoring the Church in late Victorian times. There is an answer sheet which provides interesting supplementary information. Details of the trail can be found at : theartssocietyglavenvalley.org.uk/Other Activities/Trails/aspx Paper copies are now on display at St. Martin’s with kind permission of the vicar.

New class on a Wednesday 11:30-12:30, “Move it or Lose it!” with Karen- a class to turn back the clock and improve balance and confidence, mobility and flexibility, strength and independence. Call Karen on 07785 280027 for more information.

Classes with Simon and Sarah can be booked via our website www.wellbeingnorfolk.co.uk or call 01328 711996 for further information. If you would like to run a class from the Hub do get in touch with Simon on 01328 711996.

Art for wellbeing June will see the launch of a new terms program of art classes. Run by adult learning and hosted by the hospital these classes are free to join. With a ject1 Master_Layout 1 08/09/2021 22:07 Page 1 mixture of taster sessions and 5-week courses, subjects will explore various techniques, including creating a sketchbook journal and exploring artist work or Creative textiles with preloved material.

We are Recruiting!

The Sheringham & District Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association was formed in 1950 and today has a Membership of 87, but regretfully we are a generation of the past, only seven of our members are under the age of 65 and staggeringly our average age is 85. Not being put off by this we hold regular social events, which attract an average of well over 30 members, plus guests who are always welcome!

Not every ex-military service person receives a pension, State Pensions are not keeping pace with inflation and medical services are becoming more difficult to access. RAFA, if possible, will assist in accessing support services and if necessary, provide assistance, no ex-RAF service person or their family should be disadvantaged. The long-term concern is about the likely future of the Branch, which would now seem to have few long-term prospects unless new, younger members can be recruited. We need your support - now! We know there many ex-RAF service personnel and their families living in Sheringham, Holt and Cromer and in villages in North Norfolk – join us to help ensure your own future as you will be old one day!

Briston Quizzers on Great Form!

Charity Art Sale

Art Sale and Exhibition. May 28/29th at St.Michael and All Angels Church, Plumstead NR11 7LG. Open 10.30am to 4.30pm each day.

Question: What did Frankenstein have sticking through his neck? That was just one of the posers at the latest 'Brain Of Briston Quiz' - 13 tables of four would-be Masterminds battled through 120 picture and sounds questions off the big screen on Saturday April 23rd, as well as a dozen tough picture questions that were handed round during the interval, while the crowd tucked into their Jacket Potato and pudding supper, washed down with teas and coffees or their own tipples - and all for just £6 a head! The evening made a profit of just over £300 for the Copeman Centre's funds.

Local artist John Durdin will be exhibiting many of his wonderful oil paintings, which reflect his love of the countryside around the village of Plumstead and, also, his travels abroad with his son Chris Durdin. Works by other local artists Mary Millar Watt and Kirsty O’Leary-Leeson will also be on display. 80% of the proceeds from the sale will go to support St. Michael’s Church, which John has served as churchwarden for over 30 years, and 20% to The Honeyguide Conservation Trust, a charity set up by Chris Durdin.

There were prizes for the best and worst teams too! Everyone really enjoyed the fun and are looking forward to the next one at Briston's Copeman Centre on Saturday October 29th - if you would like a reminder nearer the time, just get put on the ring-round list by 'phoning Carol now on 011263 860844 soon! And as for Frankenstein - he had nothing through his neck - Frankenstein was the Doctor, not the monster!

North Norfolk Photographic Society were pleased to welcome Jim Hartje as our judge for the final digital competition of the season. Jim is a long-standing judge from Peterborough who, for various reasons, judged the images on Zoom instead of attending in person. There was a high standard of images, particularly wildlife and Jim held back 12 images for awards out of the 66 entries. As this was an open competition, and not on a theme, there was a wide range of subject matter.

The Holt Chronicle May 2022

It’s that time of year again…

The weather is warming up and some of you are thinking about flea control for your pet. I know lots of people don’t even like to acknowledge that their pet could be carrying fleas, but it is fact – If you have a pet, you could have fleas. And the unfortunate part of the problem, as some of you are well aware, is that with the advent of central heating fleas have become a year-long feature.

But remember, just because you don’t see evidence doesn’t mean your pet isn’t suffering from flea bites. Flea There are now a wide variety of products and formulations for treating and preventing fleas ranging from sprays, spot-on, tablets and injections for cats. An integrated plan consists of using products that will kill adult fleas and products that treat the environment (house, car, kennel, etc). Speak to your vet about what combination of products would be best for you, your pet, and your home.

Signs of a heavy flea infestation on your pet include: scratching, biting, showing other signs of discomfort, scabby or irritated skin, and you may see visible signs such as adult fleas or flea dirt. However, some pets (especially cats) will groom adult fleas and flea dirt from their coats making it impossible for their owner to see evidence of a flea problem. Here’s how you can check your pet for fleas (if he/she will cooperate!): Sit your pet on a bit of white paper and rub its coat vigorously for a few minutes. This should dislodge flea faeces (“dirt”) from the coat which will fall onto the paper. Remove your pet from the paper and tip what is left on the paper onto some wet cotton wool or kitchen roll. Over the next minute or so the dried blood in the dark flecks of flea dirt should dissolve to a lighter shade of red. An important thing to remember is the adult flea represents only 5% of the flea problem. The rest is made up of eggs, worm-like larvae, and the pupa stage. Fleas are a permanent ectoparasite, meaning that once they land on your pet they stay there until they are removed by grooming or they die. Adult fleas usually live for a matter of days on your pet, but since a female can lay up to 50 eggs a day they have usually deposited 200 eggs in your house before they are finished. Another very important fact involving the flea life-cycle is that once the larva are safe in their cocoons as pupae, there is no product available that will kill them. They can stay protected in this state for months and hatch out in less than a second when your pet is close by. This is one of the reasons year-long, consistent flea prevention is so important.

Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Celebrations June 2022

Holt Town Centre Fairy Doors Trail Saturday 4 June 2022

In-line with the current nationwide upsurge, and ongoing support of nature at the present time, North Norfolk is seeing an upturn in tree planting. Holt is very much surrounded by open countryside, farmland and woodlands - both large and small, and all the natural biodiversity contained within; just the perfect setting for getting back to the great outdoors.

As such the Friends of Holt Library Group have organised a fairy doors trail enabled by funding from North Norfolk District Council, secured by Holt Town Council. The first trail will take place on Saturday, 4 June 2022 beginning at Holt Library, Church Lane, Holt. The route is circular via the King George V Playing Field, Peacock Lane, Holt, then to Little Hills, immediately on the outskirts of the town to the west - returning to the town centre at the Memorial Garden, Albert Street, Holt. The trail can be started at any stage – your preference. The fairy doors trail will be an on-going event. Holt Primary School pupils have designed each of the fairy doors and the Norwich Men’s Shed have constructed them. Accompanying nature quotes for each fairy door has been provided by local school children. The trail route map is available within leaflets from the library and tourist information centre prior to the day, as well as from additional town locations.

vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

Paddington and Winnie have now been rehomed, as have two of the older residents in care, Ollie (Irene has now fully recovered from Covid) and Billie. We still have some older cats waiting for someone to offer them a home plus some older kittens who will need experienced cat owners as they are still quite timid having joined us from an outside environment.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Please be aware that if you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website, www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk where Ella one of the timid young cats a description and photograph of the cats can be seen. Stephanie does not use a computer for her cat work so there is a delay in responding to enquiries this way and as she deals with enquiries on a first come first serve policy, she may have already spoken to someone who is interested in giving the cat a home.

There have been many changes introduced since the branch was first set up and one of these is the minimum size of all cat pens used by the Charity to house the cats while they are in our care. This meant that our original pens did not meet the standard required and applied to the three original pens with Stephanie. We were, however, allowed to use the double pen as though it was one pen and the single one for emergency homing. The pens, however, were showing their age and it was decided the time had come to dismantle them. We do still have the two larger pens at Dilham plus the four with Caroline and the two with Irene and we also have the use of some pens with Lesley at her cattery, which all meet the standard required. Having helped to put the original pens up it seems strange not to see them anymore and even stranger now having only two pens to clean.

We are on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham

We have mentioned the Animal Welfare Act in the past and the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes (ADCH), both of which are working to ensure that all animals receive a certain level of care. There are now changes in the pipeline and Defra is currently reviewing the licensing of animal establishments, e.g. commercial boarding of cats and dogs, pet vending etc. At present this only covers establishments licensed at present although it is anticipated that rescue organisations will be added in the future. The Scottish Government has already announced plans for this legislation for registering and licensing animal sanctuaries and the Welsh and Northern Ireland Governments have indicated they are likely to follow their lead. The English Government is also expected to act, possibly as early as next year. This may result in some changes as to how Cats Protection works but as we already comply with the minimum standards set out by ADCH, our Head Office are confident that it will not impact greatly on the work that we do at the branch. We will keep you advised of any changes.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for

Flower tubs on the A148

Dear Jo, Many thanks to Diana Spalton for her letter in the last issue of the Holt Chronicle regarding the tubs of flowers and the daffodils on the A148, as it passes through High Kelling. We are truly glad they delight her. The planning and planting were a joint venture with the village store and Post Office, the work being carried out by villagers and members of the High Kelling Parish Council. The aim is not only to add to the beauty of our village but also to emphasise to the road users that villagers use the footpaths at the side of this busy road and our vehicles will come out of the side roads onto it. Hope your readers don't mind me saying they are best viewed at the 30mph speed limit or under? Regards, David Carter, Chair, High Kelling Parish Council

Harry was brought to me he’d been found in a crab pot and had got completely entwined in the string, the finders had cut of as much as they could, but I saw straight away it would be a visit to the vets as it was tightly round his legs as the more they try to free themselves the tighter it becomes, he has had to have a small op, as unfortunately the string had cut deep into his right front leg down to the muscle, hopefully with time it will heal so he can be released back into the wild. My thanks to Toby and all the staff at Westover for dealing with him so quickly.

Defibrillator Fund

Dear Jo, Thank you to everyone who contributed so generously to the defibrillator fund in memory of Roger Lidgett. I’m pleased to say that this has now been installed on the building previously used by Santander Bank (now an ice cream shop) on Holt High Street. Thank you to everyone involved in the rather long, drawn out process to achieve this. Jan Lidgett.

RNLI Wells legendary lifeboat coxswain, David J Cox BEM, dies aged 96

mechanic, were at sea for 11 hours 24 minutes that night, in violent storm conditions with very heavy swell and unbelievable seas, poor visibility and sub-zero temperatures. During his time as Coxswain, he was also awarded a Vellum for the service to yacht Kiskadee in August 1964, a framed letter of thanks for the yacht, Kalin in September 1966, a Vellum service to the MFV Pilgrim in tow of the tug Superman in October 1973, a bronze medal for MFV Sarah-K in November 1982 and a framed letter of thanks for service to the tug Dockman in April 1983. David retired from his service to the lifeboat at the age of sixty in 1986, having handed on his vast knowledge of the sea and seamanship to the volunteer crew members who had joined under him. Before he died, he recorded his memoirs, which have been a fountain of knowledge for the RNLI. Lifeboat Operations Manager, Chris Hardy, said ‘David was an inspiration as Coxswain to all lifeboatmen throughout the Institution, particularly for his courage and unwavering determination to saving lives at sea off our coastline. He actively continued that commitment throughout his retirement years and was a great ambassador for the RNLI, often recalling in great detail the difficult ‘shouts’ he had taken part in over the years, which totally captivated all those who were listening. David’s time served in Wells will never be forgotten and his longstanding contribution to the RNLI will live on in his memory - he was a legend!’

The RNLI station flag is being flown at half-mast in mourning for the renowned Wells lifeboat coxswain, David Cox, who died on Sunday 24 April. During his long and distinguished service, he received 5 awards from the RNLI for courage, determination and excellent seamanship. David was born in Wells-next-Sea in 1926 into a family of fishermen, a life which he inevitably followed. It took him on transatlantic cargo trips to America, fishing for whelks out of Wells harbour, and in time, becoming coxswain of the Wells lifeboat. As a boy David would race to the beach when the launch maroons went off from the lifeboat house indicating danger at sea and help to launch the lifeboat. In 1945, at the age of 19, he volunteered as a member of the lifeboat crew, following in another family tradition. In 1960 David took over as Coxswain of the lifeboat from his uncle, William Cox. His most difficult rescue, for which he was awarded a prestigious silver medal, was on 15 February 1979 for his part in service to the Romanian cargo ship, Savinesti, with 29 people on board. The Romanian ship had engine failure eleven miles off the coast of Wells. The weather was so severe that neither the Sheringham nor Cromer lifeboats could reach the ship. The Wells 37ft open lifeboat, Ernest Tom Neathercoat, launched and David and his crew reached the vessel, despite the lifeboat’s radar freezing and poor visibility because of the snow. With the assistance of the Humber lifeboat, which escorted the Savinesti to safety, all lives on board the vessel were saved. In summary, David and his crew, all volunteers ! other than the

North Norfolk Croquet

When Alice was having her adventures in Wonderland, she played croquet with the Red Queen. Flamingos acted as the mallets, hedgehogs as the balls (when they were not running away) and the hoops were provided by life size playing cards.

To my knowledge, no croquet like this is currently played in North Norfolk. However, we at Bodham Croquet Club are keen to uphold the sport in its somewhat more modern form. This article hopes to encourage potential local players to come and join us - from Wells and Fakenham in the west to Cromer and North Walsham in the east. Two dates in May have been reserved for us to “meet and greet” you (see below).

Genealogist with more than 30 years’ experience would be pleased to help anyone interested in exploring his or her family history. I offer assistance particularly in respect of genealogical research in the United Kingdom, Eire, the Isle of Man and Germany. Other territories considered. Reasonable charges. Anthony Cooper MA (tonyr.cooper@googlemail.com)

The alternative version is “Golf” croquet. Here there are no bonus shots – all players are on the lawn and each side plays alternate strokes trying to be the first to score the next hoop. Golf Croquet is interactive and social and a more accessible game than Association. At Bodham we provide opportunities for both Association and Golf versions. Like play on the Golf course, Croquet can be played with handicaps. Each of our association players – from relative beginners to more skilful players - has a handicap. This enables our matches to be played on roughly “equal” terms - whoever the opponent.

We suspect that there are numerous croquet sets in North Norfolk – some no doubt hidden away at the back of garden sheds, while others get used by families and friends on their back lawns on warm Sunday afternoons. Most families have their own “house” rules for their play. Hopefully some of these players would like to develop their skills further.

How much do you know about your family history? Would you like a family tree?

level). The traditional version (as no doubt Alice tried to play) is known as “Association” croquet. Association croquet is a lot like snooker – a game entailing bonus shots which allow the player to build up “breaks” on the lawn (going through several hoops during the one visit to the lawn). The opposition has to wait patiently until the break finishes.

Amongst the variation of rules, there are two fundamentally different versions of the game, each with its own set of “official” rules (defined at the ational/ international

Bodham Croquet Club has a good standard lawn in the corner of Bodham playing field, three miles east of Holt (NR25 6QG). The entrance to the playing fields is from the main road where there is ample parking.

Interested in playing with us? Then come and have a go – either on the afternoon (2:15pm) on Saturday May 14th or Saturday May 21st or in the early evening (6:30pm) on Tuesday May 24th. To find out more about these sessions, or to see us at any other time, ring either Harry (01263 588122) or Barry (01263 715878).

Bothered by Mummy Tummy?

Now you have a safe and effective option to do something about it. Colishall Cosmetic Clinic provides several effective options including a mini-tummy tuck.

What is a mini tummy tuck or mini-abdominoplasty procedure? Mini tummy tuck is a procedure to address stubborn area of stretched, sagging skin and fat on your lower tummy. Pregnancy, aging and genetics are common culprits behind a belly pouch and unfortunately, diet and exercise are often ineffective in helping to get rid of it. If you are bothered by the appearance of your lower abdomen, a mini tummy tuck may help you get the results you want with a relatively short recovery. Mini-tummy tuck reduces sagging skin and fat from lower abdomen improving body contours and silhouette.

How is mini-tummy tuck different from a full tummy tuck? Full tummy tuck is a major operation performed under general anaesthesia. It is suitable for patients after massive weight loss, patients with severe stretch marks all over their abdomen or in patients with

significant muscle wall laxity or abdominal hernias. It requires a longer scar, wide undermining [which risks blood supply to the skin] hence liposuction is not carried out during this procedure. There is a scar around the belly button as it has to be moved. It is a major procedure that provides a tighter but not necessary slimmer appearance.

Mini tummy tuck is a good option in patients with skin excess in lower part of their belly. Mini tummy tuck is a less invasive option. This uses a relatively short incision in the same area of a C-section scar and avoids the incision around the belly button. This is often performed on women who have mild sagging or post-baby pouch, stretch marks from pregnancy, or C-section scarring. This procedure focuses only on the area below the belly button, not the entire abdomen.

We nearly always add liposuction to our tummy tucks to sculpt the body in 3 dimension. The technique known also as mini lipo-abdominoplasty with no undermining, makes it possible to safely combine liposculpture of the abdomen with lower abdomen skin tightening. Unlike traditional tummy tucks, this operation allows for more contouring of the abdomen. It gives a result that is both tight and shapely. What are the advantages of a mini-abdominoplasty? • Enhancing of the body shape and silhouette as a result of liposuction. • Lower rate of complications. • Easier surgery performances. • Natural profiles. What treatment alternatives are available? Mesotherapy injections can help melt fat, a non-surgical, non-invasive solution is ultrasound and radiofrequency fat reduction. Laser liposuction may provide enough skin tightening to avoid need for skin removal in some patients. Co2 laser can be used to improve stretch marks

Every Shot Counts!

Want to make new friends and have fun while mastering a new skill?

While the rest of the Club were busy on early season practice on the Green, four of our ladies had chosen to enter the first County Competition of the season – a Ladies Open Day Runners-up. (Left to Open Day at Thorpe Recreation Bowls Club right) Gillian Pilgrim, Kathleen in Norwich. Twelve teams, from various clubs, Cottington, Patricia Chaplow each played three short games of six ends each. and Joy Seago Our team won all their three, against King’s Lynn, Thorpe Rec “B” and Norfolk Bowling Club. Only two teams were undefeated – ourselves and Thorpe Rec “A”. We were duly awarded the runner up position with Thorpe Rec “A” winning by the narrowest of margins – by just one shot! The last Wednesday of the month saw us welcoming a touring team from Newark. During a five-day visit to North Norfolk, they played four friendly matches against local clubs. Was it cold! Being the coldest day of a breezy low temperature week, piling on additional clothing was still hardly adequate to keep hands warm. But a good time was had by all – even by the Newark supporters. After the 18 ends Newark won three of the four rinks – but the overall result of these friendlies is decided by total shots won by each side. Newark still were the winners by – you’ve guessed it – one shot! Soon after this Chronicle is issued, those of you who live in Holt will have a leaflet through your letter box telling you about our Club. I hope you will find the details interesting. The distribution is our effort not to miss anyone who wants to renew previous bowling experiences or who may want to try the sport. The leaflet features an invitation for potential bowlers to come and meet us at 1.30 pm on Saturday 28th May - we would love to see you there! Newark supporters brave the cold Barry Pilgrim

Why not come along to High Kelling Village Hall and try your hand at Short Mat Bowls in a warm, friendly environment, with refreshments provided.

We are offering free afternoon taster sessions with expert tuition from experienced players. If you would like to find out more or book a taster session contact Lyn on 01263 713898 or Tony on 01263 713119

The Fun of Rowing with Blakeney Rowing Club

The rowing season has really picked up pace in recent weeks with many outings taking to the water. Even some of the early morning tides have proved popular. The two skiffs – Hoi Larntan and Bluejacket – occupy pride of place in the dinghy park, looking resplendent and freshly painted in the club colours of blue and white. Thanks to Barrie Borwell for his time, expertise and workshop space during the period when the skiffs were being maintained. “Crabbers,” efficiently coordinated by Rob Dunster, were also on hand to work hard at ensuring that both skiffs will continue to be safe whilst looking great as they slice through the waves around Blakeney. See the club website at crablakeney.wordpress.com to gain details of the club’s activities. The blog contains descriptions and photographs of many of the outings to Blakeney Point and to other areas of the harbour. A programme of events is currently being organised. Club members will be able to choose whether to be involved in a range of competitions including the Hanse Rowing Festival in King’s Lynn on June 11th, the Canvey Island Race on July 2nd, the Morston Regatta on August 29th and the Thames Great River Race on 10th September. Then there is the race for The Carrow Cup in Norwich on December 3rd. There will also be the “Five Miles From Home” series at Blakeney which has been so prominent during the last two years. Away from competition, the informal rows will always be there to be enjoyed by everyone. The club social gathering at The King’s Arms, Blakeney, on Saturday 23rd April was very much enjoyed by members. It was great to meet up for a chat and a meal in a very pleasant setting. Look at the club website to find out more about the range of activities available to club members. Why not get in touch with the club to try skiff rowing for yourselves? Solution to No. 301: 1. Qa1, threat 2. Qxd4. 1… Kxb42. Rb7; 1… Bxe4 2. Rc7; 1… Kd6 2. Rd7; 1… Be3 2. Rf7; 1… Rd3 2. Rg7. And of course, 1… Rxe7+ 2. Bxe7. Beautifully engineered Pelle theme; five discovered mates by the pinned white R, three by double check when the black Bc6 defends or the black K takes one of his flights (one given by the excellent Key), two more as shut-offs when one of two defensive pieces moves away.

No. 302 is one for the numerous local OTB players recently featured in this magazine and in several recent issues of Town & Country News, and indeed all local chess players. This time, for a change, solvers should phone me on 01263 824157 with just the Key-move and their name and address, and the first correct call wins a prize – if I don’t answer, voicemail is timed. Salvation Army Grateful for Vital Funding

Salvation Army leaders who received funding from the Norfolk Community Foundation to help feed vulnerable people say it has made a huge difference. Through participation with families directly, other agencies and schools supporting people across Norfolk, the voucher scheme has helped the church and charity develop relationships and build connections for a more joined up community. 12 branches in Norfolk were supported by the Norfolk Community Foundation through its Household Support Fund to purchase and distribute £50 food vouchers. The Salvation Army also worked with other agencies who referred families to its Toys and Tins appeal at Christmas. The agencies distributed the vouchers to the families they work with. One agency, supporting young people moving into independent living, used the vouchers to teach budgeting skills through the process of buying staple foods, whilst another worked with a small group to shop and prepare meals together. Not only did the vouchers assist struggling households with buying essentials, but they also led to The Salvation Amy connecting with people who would not normally use its services. The Salvation Army offers a range of assistance from employment and debt advice to participation in a range of well-being and social activities.

Carol McKean is community manager in Sheringham. She said vouchers were distributed to 150 households. She added: “When we were told we had access to funding, we immediately identified lots of families experiencing hardship. People are paying more national insurance; fuel costs have gone up and food costs are spiralling. People are worried and panicking. “These vouchers made a huge difference to those households who are getting support and eased the strain for a short period of time. The families were hugely grateful.” Carol said The Salvation Army in Sheringham worked closely with schools, other churches and local children’s services to identify vulnerable people and families. She explained: “We all worked together to meet the needs of families who needed help the most. But any of us may need support as we go forward.”

What can we learn from celebrities who died without making a will? By Yasmin Knock, Solicitor, Hayes + Storr. Celebrities often have professional advisors who look after their business affairs. However, like many people, sometimes they do not get around to making a will. When you die without a will, predetermined laws of intestacy decide who should inherit your estate, and while these laws seek to deal with matters in a fair way, they do not consider modern family structures, family dynamics or personal wishes.

Prince’s lesson for philanthropists

Family feuds over who should inherit are harder to settle where there is no will, as the person’s wishes remain unknown. After Prince died, intestacy rules meant that all his assets passed to his siblings, leaving his five half-siblings without a share of his estate. Had Prince made a will, he might have chosen to make gifts to his half-siblings as well. He may also have chosen to leave legacies to the various charities he gave generously to throughout his lifetime, something which cannot be achieved without a will.

Stieg Larsson’s lesson for unmarried couples

Author Stieg Larsson, who famously wrote the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series, died intestate. His vast wealth passed to his father under intestacy, leaving his long-term partner

with nothing. Unmarried couples are not entitled to each other’s estates, regardless of the seriousness or length of the relationship, so the only way to ensure your partner receives any of your assets is to leave them in a will.

Rik Mayall’s lesson in tax planning

Intestacy is often not the best approach when it comes to tax planning. When actor Rik Mayall died intestate, his wealth was subject to a substantial inheritance tax liability that might have been reduced has he planned his affairs during his lifetime. One of the most important ways to benefit from available tax savings is with a will.

Pablo Picasso’s lesson to save delay and costs

Without a valid will, a complex and extensive estate can be difficult to deal with, resulting in unnecessary delays and high costs. Whilst an average estate takes around one year to administer, when Pablo Picasso died without a will his estate reportedly took six years to settle and cost approximately $30 million.

Amy Winehouse’s lesson for entrepreneurs

intellectual property such as royalties from music. Amy Winehouse’s intestacy resulted in her £4 million estate being almost entirely depleted within two years of her death after her companies passed into the control of her parents. A will would have allowed her to appoint an appropriate person to manage the companies on behalf of her beneficiaries to ensure they remained viable assets.

How we can help

We can advise you on how best to pre-empt or manage potential conflicts and how your estate might be affected by various taxes.
