The Holt Chronicle November 2021
A Note from the Editor
November already……. really? The clocks have gone back, and I suppose we are on the run up to Christmas. With talk of shortages of this and that, let alone rising winter fuel bills you could be forgiven for thinking we are in for a bleak winter. But wait a minute, maybe it’s time to have a bit of a reset and think about those simple pleasures we enjoyed before everything got so complicated. Making the Christmas cake and puddings in November to be fed and matured for the big day. Making decorations with the children (and memories at the same time). Crisp walks wrapped up in scarves and gloves and then home to a mug of hot chocolate. Who needs the latest toy or gadget? If Covid has taught us anything, it is to look at what really matters to us and our loved ones and that getting back to basics is not such a bad thing. So, get planning those homemade treats for Christmas, make some presents for loved ones instead of chasing the latest must-have, make some memories – they last longer than anything you can buy. Whatever you are planning, enjoy your November magazine. Keep safe and well. Jo – Editor. Here are the deadline dates and publishing dates for the next 3 magazines. Month December January February

News from the Venue
Although as a nation we still seem to be in a season of some uncertainty, the need to continue to meet up and socialise is so important to us all. It’s with this in mind that we continue to plan and carry on regardless with events and regular groups, always of course with safety and prevention of covid in mind. Our new Live Jazz Nights kicked off in style with a full house and the amazing Jimmy Jefford Quartet, who rocked the house with fantastic music. It’s great to see that our musicians are still going strong despite the long lockdown, and we are looking forward to welcoming Chris Cooper and his band on 3rd November, and a traditional jazz band with hopefully some dancing on 1st December. We are now starting a regular indoor tabletop sale on the 1st Sunday of the month with the help of Jade Garrett, which we hope will give people a chance to have a good clear-out and also enable local crafters to enjoy an indoor venue to sell their wares. She will also be hosting a Body Shop party on 19th November, to enable us all to buy some lovely Christmas Pressies. On the subject of Christmas (can’t believe it’s coming around so quickly!) we are again going to be putting on our fabulous Community Christmas Day Meal, organised by Holt Community Café and run entirely by volunteers. In this season, it’s even more important that we support each other and come together to celebrate when we can. If you would like to volunteer for this fabulous fun event, contact the Venue on the usual number or email us; see our regular events advert for details. This will be the seventh year that we have run this event, and it is the highlight of our year, bringing together the community to celebrate Christmas with a huge traditional full Christmas feast, raffle, music and more, and finishing off with a big screen live showing of the Queens Speech; what a cracking way to celebrate the festive holidays! We make no charge for this event but are always blown away by people’s generosity on the day and beforehand with donations to help us to make the day happen. Obviously, we need to know how many to cater for, so booking in is essential. Watch out for Arts Forum events at the Venue run by Phil Barrett who will be interviewing various local artists and musicians, giving us an insight into their lives, work and processes. Again, these are optional donation free events for you all to enjoy, helping people to engage with the art world in a unique and interesting way and providing artists with a platform to raise their profile. If you’ve ever wondered how artists and musicians get their inspiration why not come along, enjoy a drink from the bar and find out? On 27th November we have the return of live wrestling to the Venue, with a packed line up of local and national wrestling stars all hell bent on providing epic entertainment for all the family, so if you enjoy a good smack down, grab your tickets now! Last month we enjoyed a wonderful Silver Sunday event with Jeff and Sue Short providing amazing 1940’s inspired live music and Holt Community Café serving a delicious full afternoon tea to 80 of our lovely seniors, an event that was so much fun we fully intend to repeat it again next year! Jeff and Sue will be back with a full band on 2nd November with a 60’s inspired afternoon, and on 7th December with Christmas Crooners; it’s so lovely to have these live music events to enjoy right on our doorstep. Huge thanks to Jeff and Sue for their support and we look forward to hearing you play here again. For more info about our events and groups or for volunteering opportunities you can check out our website at www.thevenueholt.com email us on info@thenvenueholt.com or call us on 01263 713427; we would love to hear from you! Up and running again!
North Norfolk Photographic Society coped pretty well during “the lockdown” by holding meetings via Zoom. Which worked well enough – but it was so nice to be back with a ‘normal’ meeting. So, around 30 members met Wonder of Blakeney by Paul Keates in the Village Hall at Cley for their first competition of the season – with a set subject ‘Creative’. Some say that all photography is (or ought to be) creative, but the test for a competition is that it should have something a little (or a lot) extra. So more than one image might be combined into one, the background (or the foreground) might be altered, the colours may be changed – there should be something input by the author to make it a bit different. Linda Woodward who lives in Cambridgeshire came to judge the pictures, which were “PDI’s” - that is to say Projected Digital Images, shown on the screen. Linda had nearly 60 to judge – and she gave helpful comments on every one. 5 were awarded ‘Gold’ distinction – but another 21 were singled out to be declared Silver, Bronze or commended. The five winners were (in no particular order) ‘Kingfisher – Not for Kingfishers’: an amusing image by Paul Richards of a bottle of Kingfisher beer with a kingfisher sitting on top! and ‘Birds Eye View’ by Paul Keates - a distorted maritime scene with an owl flying into the shot. ‘Mystical Trees’ by Valerie Walker showed two shapes, a bit like trees, which the judge said she thought were shapes made in the sand on a beach as the water receded; ‘Impressions of a Downland Landscape’ by Liz Akers, a lovely soft picture; and ‘Wonder of Blakeney Marshes’, a striking picture of beach, sea and sky. Linda Woodward had not visited North Norfolk Photographic Society before, but hopefully we shall see more of her in the future, but the journey from Cambridge to Cley and back home afterwards is perhaps a tall order!
North Norfolk Photographic Society holds meetings on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month at 7.00 for 7.30 pm in Cley Village Hall, The Fairstead, Cley-next-theSea, Norfolk NR25 7RJ and are always pleased to welcome visitors and prospective new members; do come along to a Club Evening and introduce yourself.

County Councillor News
from County Councillor Erik Vardy Hello all My goodness such challenging times for us all still. There are many projects either developed by NCC or being brought forward soon. I have highlighted two below for your information and help as appropriate. One project I am keenly supporting and assisting in is something being developed by Love Holt and Holt Town Council, it’s called “A Vision for Holt” more about that to come.
Economy Chances Project Chances, a £4.9m Norfolk County Council project, co-funded by the European Social Fund, is reaching out to people in Norfolk who have recently lost their jobs or are long-term unemployed who may face barriers to finding work. It aims to help them get back into employment through new opportunities for support and training. Launched in April 2021, the project has already supported nearly 300 participants on their journey to find employment. The Norfolk County Council-led Chances for Work and Chances Healthy Living projects are being run by partners Voluntary Norfolk, Citizens Advice Norfolk, Citizens Advice Diss, Thetford and District, and Future Projects. There are local advocates based in each of the seven Norfolk district areas, who work to provide personalised one-to-one support. Depending on the needs of the individual, the support could include help to identify skills gaps and finding suitable training and qualifications, support to access services to boost health and wellbeing, or finding ways to overcome barriers such as transport or accessing childcare. Support for those with physical or learning disabilities could also include providing help to access services, or assistance from a mental health specialist or disability support specialist who will be working closely with the Chances team.
( [ W U D + D Q G V
The project which officially started in April 2021 will run until September 2023. Individuals who are keen to find out more are welcome to contact the project team directly – for contact details and further information see www.norfolk.gov.uk/chances
Support for Norfolk Entrepreneurs The Business & IP Centre Norfolk, managed by Norfolk County Council’s Library and Information Service, is offering a free six-week online programme that will take budding business owners on a journey from ‘Bedroom to Business’. Over the past 18 months, many people have had to find alternative sources of income, including considering setting up their own business. This programme will help aspiring business owners develop their idea and provide the tools needed to get started. Bedroom to Business is being delivered by MENTA Business Support and consists of six two-hour workshops with a chance for questions and one-to-one coaching sessions after each workshop. Starting on Friday 5 November, the six workshops will run weekly and cover topics including: pros and cons of being self-employed; identifying any additional skills needed; developing a business plan; business funding; registering your business. Workshops will be limited to a maximum of 10 people to allow participants to get the most out of the sessions. If anyone is unable to attend this programme, Bedroom to Business will run again starting in January. Participants will need to live, work or study in Norfolk or close to a Norfolk library to be eligible for this programme. For more information and to register, visit Bedroom to Business or www.bipcnorfolk.eventbrite.com.

Age Concern
Watching others also impacted on their enjoyment and motivation and there was scope to discuss the different colours. People living with dementia are more likely to achieve their potential by doing rather than by sitting passively and watching.
It is said that over 50% of older people in the UK say that the television is their main source of company. Here at the Age Concern North Norfolk day centre, we do not have time for the television as we are too busy with activities and enjoying our time together.
Over the past couple of months, we have done biscuit decorating, flower arranging, making lavender bags, seated exercises and music and singing. In addition there are quizzes, word searches, games and puzzles with the aim of stimulating all the senses throughout the day. Cognitive Stimulation Therapy has proved very beneficial for people with cognitive deficits as it can engage people in very simple and straightforward ways and is effective when a variety of sensory stimuli are combined within the activity.
There are still places available, particularly on Wednesdays and Thursdays – phone 01263 821188 to book your Half Price Taster Day.
Exercise to music with scarves was a physical activity structured by a trained leader to enable all participants to move different parts of their body to music as they were able to safely. The light-weight scarves contributed positively as movement was required to wave them around so that people moved their limbs more than normal.
Wear it Pink Day
It was a very Pink Day at Sheringham Golf Club on Tuesday 12th October as the Ladies regaled themselves in colour, in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness. Ladies Vice Captain Christine Tew and Past Captain Elaine Richards went all out with their pink hair. The club raised £500 for the charity from their club competition, a raffle and donations.

Why you should consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney this November
At Clapham & Collinge Solicitors, we’re running our ‘Charity Lasting Powers of Attorney Scheme’ throughout November, where we are offering a 25% discount on Lasting Powers of Attorney. In addition to this discount, we will also make a £50.00 donation per Lasting Power of Attorney appointment to support 5 Norfolk based charities. Our chosen charities for this year’s scheme are The Benjamin Foundation, Norfolk and Waveney Mind, Big C, Norfolk Community Foundation and Sheringham Little Theatre.
Although it is often difficult to think about, it is crucial that we plan for the future and ensure we can manage our financial affairs in the event of an incapacitating illness, accident or injury. Everyone understands the importance of a Will, but Lasting Powers of Attorney are a bit more obscure in the public sphere and often people are not aware why they need them.
If you lose the ability to manage your own affairs, a partner or family member cannot automatically deal with things on your behalf. A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that enables people you choose to have legal authority to make certain decisions for you, if you become unable to make them
yourself. The person who is given this authority is known as an ‘attorney’. They can manage your finances or make decisions relating to your health and welfare. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney:
Property and Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney:
This gives your attorney the power to make decisions about your money and property, including managing bank or building society accounts, paying bills, collecting a pension and if necessary, selling your home. Once registered with the Office of the Public Guardian, it can be used immediately, or held in readiness until required.
Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney:
This gives your attorney the power to make decisions about your daily routine, medical care, moving into a care home and lifesustaining medical treatment. It can only be used if you are unable to make your own decisions.
In relation to the cost of preparing and registering a Lasting Power of Attorney, this will depend on whether you wish to have both a Lasting Power of Attorney (Property and Financial Affairs) and/or a Lasting Power of

What happens if you don't make a Lasting Power of Attorney?
• No one has legal authority to act on your behalf – your spouse and children have no Lin Whitehead automatic rights to make decisions on your behalf; • Someone will need to make an application to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order; • This can be costly, time consuming and you may not end up being assisted by the person you would have chosen yourself.
All appointments must be booked by Tuesday 30th November and must take place by Monday 31st January 2022. To claim your discount and book your Lasting Power of Attorney appointment, please contact our Client Relations Team on 01263 823398 or email enquiries@clapham-collinge.co.uk

On Wednesday, 6th October members of Weybourne WI met at the Village Hall. Celia Howe, President, welcomed everyone to the meeting, including six visitors. Jean Benham was thanked for the beautiful foliage arrangement she had made as a raffle prize; plus, the lavender bags she had placed on each chair. Correspondence was followed by the treasurer’s report and details about interest groups. The AGM is to be held in November and nominations for new committee members were requested. A craft group has started in the Village Hall on the fourth Wednesday of each month (12.00-2.00 pm). All welcome. Our speaker, Mr Greg Powell, gave a very accurate impression of James Stewart, as he told us about the actor’s life. He’d spent his early years in Indiana, Pennsylvania where his family ran a hardware store. He then went to Princetown University to train as an architect. This was where he fell into acting. At first, he played his accordion between sets, but this led to him being given small parts in plays. He decided to follow his acting career and moved to New York, where he lived for a while with Henry Fonda. His early plays were not successful, due to the depression, but eventually he got invited to California by a talent spotter and was offered a contract by MGM. ‘Mr Smith Goes to Washington’ was his first successful film and he went on to win an Oscar for Best Actor in ‘Philadelphia Story’. His acting career was halted by WWII, when he was drafted into the military and eventually became a pilot. He was later posted to Norfolk where he flew his first combat mission in 1943. After the war ended, he sailed back to America on the Queen Elizabeth. ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ restarted his acting career and he went on to make many more successful films. He felt he had led a blessed life. Mr Powell reverted to being himself to conclude his talk and told us he had been a fan of James Stewart since he was a child. His enthusiasm was evident and made for an entertaining afternoon. As Ina Stew said in her vote of thanks, it was easy to imagine that it had been Mr Stewart who had been speaking to us!

Dear friends, November begins and ends with glorious feast days. On Nov 1st we keep the feast of All Saints, when we honour those holy men and women whom the church declares as Saints and to whom the church in High Kelling is dedicated. The Saints are those who in life and often in death have borne witness to the love of God. They are ordinary men and women who were called by God to do extraordinary things. They provide us with an example of what humanity, with God’s help, can achieve. They are shining lights for us to to follow and from their place in the glory of heaven they surround us as we journey through this life. We join with this great communion of Saints in the worship of God and through the power of their prayers God hears us and guides us. One such Saints was of course St Andrew the Apostle, who’s feast day on the 30th November ends the month. An apostle of Christ and the brother of St Peter, Andrew a fisherman by trade left his nets and followed Christ. He was thought to have been crucified in Patras in Greece around 60AD. The Parish Church in Holt is of course dedicated to him. As well as these two Saints days we also, in the month of November, keep the commemoration of All Souls on the 2nd and Remembrance Sunday on the 14th November. These two days are also important because they provide us with an opportunity to remember before God our own departed loved ones and those who gave their lives in the service of our country. In doing so we can give thanks for those we love but see no longer and for the sacrifice so many made for the freedoms we enjoy today. We remember them before God and commend them to his mercy and safe keeping. November may mark the onset of winter and remind us of those we have loved and lost, yet as we honour the Saints it also contains the sure and certain hope of the future glory that awaits us in our eternal home in heaven. Kindest regards, Fr. Howard FROM THE REGISTERS Funerals: Friday 29th October: Mary Thaxter Wednesday 3rd November: Fiona Shirt

Budgens Update
Dear Jo, Once again could I ask readers of Sheringham Independent and Holt Chronicle to save their stamps for me which I send onto various charities which with Xmas just round the corner are in much need of funds. Also, could you make sure when sending them you put the correct postage on otherwise I end up paying the handling fee. Thank you. You can send them to:-

Dear Jo It is now fifteen months since the Budgens store in Holt was devastatingly destroyed by fire and whilst it is appreciated it takes time for insurers, landlords and tenants to sort out who has to pays for what and when, it would appear that the good people of Holt are being subjected to an inordinately long time period as regards getting this sorted and for the rebuild of the new store to start. Yes, we currently have a significantly reduced in size temporary tented replacement store, but it has to be said that this is hardly what is required in a town the size of Holt in terms of the quantity, choice and the quality of products that are on offer, together with the inadequate car parking which all too often floods at the first sight of rain. Like many other industries the current supply and demand situation in the construction industry is supercharged and as such adds to my concerns that we may have to wait a long time before the much-needed replacement store appears even once the protracted legal and financial wrangling is completed. Please tell me my assumptions are incorrect and work on site is due to start any time now. I suspect that like the many other frustrated but loyal customers of Budgens, we would all greatly appreciate regular updates about what is actually happening, it really shouldn’t be too difficult to provide this. It is often said that in business that ‘cash is king’ but all businesses should remember there will be no cash whatsoever without customers. I Moore Hempstead
Thank You
Dear Jo, Myself and my family would like to thank relatives, friends and neighbours for their sympathy, beautiful floral tributes, cards and donations to the DEBRA Charity, following our recent sad loss of Maurice Pearson, a very dear husband, Dad and Grandad. Thanks also to Lloyd Durham for excellent funeral arrangements. Thank you, Carol Pearson and family.
Holt and District Probus Club
Glad to be Back! After such a long wait (due to covid) Holt and District Probus Club were very happy to meet again at The Feathers in Holt on Thursday, 7th October for a delightful meal and a lot of splendid, good company. Arrangements had been made for the club to meet in the Conservatory – where there are plenty of windows that were left open to allow for lots of fresh, virus-free air to circulate. The meal – that was a cracker: soup then liver and bacon and then spotted dick. Wow! That was some meal.
There were 27 members present and one guest. No speaker yet – the committee wanted to see how many members were ready to come after the pandemic and lock down. Chairman John Mangan opened the meeting by welcoming all present. A good time was had by all. Holt and District Probus Club meets at The Feathers for lunch on the first Thursday each month. Anyone interested in considering membership should contact the Hon. Treasurer Ray Morgan at ray_morgan@icloud.com or via the club website at holtprobusclub.wordpress.com

A local MP has completed the London Marathon today, raising over £26,000 for charity in the process. Duncan Baker, MP for North Norfolk, crossed the finish line in 4 hours, 16 minutes, and 30 seconds, marking the end of many months of training and fundraising. “I’m absolutely delighted not only to finish my first marathon, but to have hit – and gone past – our fundraising target. We have so many amazing charities in North Norfolk, doing so much for our local communities and it’s great to be able to support their work. I’m so grateful to everyone who has donated, and so generously, to be able to help 26 local charities nominated by the public.” Duncan has been fitting training around his Parliamentary and constituency work, often running around Westminster after midnight to get in shape for the London Marathon – and he’s becoming a familiar sight to many on his regular runs around North Norfolk. The 26 charities benefiting from Duncan’s run are: Littlelifts, Norfolk Coast Riding for the Disabled, North Norfolk Astronomy Society, the MacMillan Cancer Unit at Cromer Hospital, Holt Youth Project, Wild Touch Wildlife Centre, North Norfolk Foodbank, Stalham Community Gym, Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society, Motor Neurone Disease Association, Fitzroy Support at Home, Cromer Youth & Skate Park, Holt & District Dementia Support, Wells Community Hospital, RNLI, The Treehouse, North Norfolk Cats Lifeline, Aldborough Village Care, Ladybird Pre-School Nursery, Sheringham Little Theatre, Friends of Roughton School, Canaan Christian Trust, DEBRA, East Anglian Children’s Hospices, East Anglian Air Ambulance, and Thornage Hall Independent Living. Old Fashioned Chocolate Fudge With Christmas approaching and all of us tightening our belts, one idea for presents with a personal touch is to make something. This scores on two counts, it is cheaper than paying for commercial products and all the fancy packaging and people appreciate the effort of something made especially for them, particularly if children have been involved too. This recipe is easy but will require a sugar thermometer and caution, as boiling sugar is very hot and sticky. Let children observe the cooking but take charge of packaging and decorating.
Ingredients 800g caster sugar 250ml full fat milk 75g unsalted butter, cubed 350g dark chocolate 5ml vanilla extract
Homity Pie
As winter comes around, it is time to look out those warming recipes which just hit the spot on a cold day. This one is just the ticket and won’t break the bank. You can jazz it up with any left over veg, mix it up with different cheeses (substituting some of the cheddar with blue cheese makes a change) and any leftovers are good cold the next day. If you want to save a bit of time you can use readymade pastry. Good served with plenty of fresh veg or salad.
Ingredients
For the Pastry • 125 g (4oz) plain flour • 125 g (4oz) wholemeal plain flour + extra for rolling out • 150 g (5oz) butter chilled, + extra for greasing • 1 egg lightly beaten For the Filling • 500g potatoes • 125g spring onions • 1 leek • 2 tablespoon vegetable / sunflower oil • 25g butter
Method Grease a 20x30 tin and line with baking parchment and prepare a washing up bowl of ice-cold water.
Put the sugar, milk and butter in a heavy saucepan and melt together over a moderate heat, stirring constantly until the sugar is dissolved. Bring the mixture to the boil and without stirring bring to a slow, rolling boil for 10 minutes until (using a sugar thermometer) it reaches 114C (soft ball stage).
Stir in the chocolate and immediately place the bottom of the saucepan in the cold water, without getting water in the pan. Stir in the vanilla extract, beat until smooth with a wooden spoon for 6-8 minutes, then pour the mixture into the prepared tin. Leave until cool and completely set then lift out of the tin on the
• 3 tablespoon double cream • 150g mature cheddar cheese • 15g parsley chopped • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method To make the pastry, place the flours, and chilled butter into a good-sized bowl. Rub the butter into the flours until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Make a well in the centre of the breadcrumbs and add the beaten egg. Mix to a dough, adding a little cold water or milk to fully bring the mixture together if required. Wrap the pastry and chill for at least 30 minutes.
paper onto a chopping board. Cut into 2cm squares and serve. If giving as a gift, put into gift bags or screw top jar and tie tightly with decorative ribbon.
Jo – editor.
Wash the potatoes and cut into chunks about 2cm (1in) cubed. Steam until tender about 15 – 20 minutes. Whilst the potatoes are cooking prepare the other ingredients. Cut the spring onions into 1 cm (½in) chunks. Wash the leek thoroughly, cut into 2cm (1in) rounds. Chop the parsley. Grate the cheese. Once the potatoes are cooked through, heat the oil in a large frying pan and set over a medium heat. Add the leek and cook gently until softened. Add the spring onions and cook for a further 2 or 3 minutes, stirring regularly. Add the butter and allow it to melt into the vegetables. Then stir in the cooked potatoes. Add the double cream and 3/4 of the cheese, stir again. Keep stirring until the cheese melts and the double cream to start to thicken. Add the parsley. Season to taste. Turn off the heat and set aside to cool. Preheat the oven to 220℃ (200℃ fan)/425°F/gas mark 7. Roll the pastry into a circle about 5mm (¼in) thick and large enough to line an 8-9-inch, deep pie dish. Grease the pie dish with a little butter. Use the rolling pin to gently lift the pastry and lay it gently over the pie dish. Press the pastry into the pie dish, avoid stretching it. Trim away the excess from the rim. Once the filling is completely cool spoon it into the lined pie dish. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top of the filling Bake for 20 – 25 minutes until the pastry is cooked through and the cheese is starting to brown. Enjoy! Carolyn Burn

The Treehouse
Have you heard of The Treehouse? You may not have done as we are well hidden; tucked away in a quiet side street in Holt. The Treehouse is a café but not your run of the mill café, The Treehouse is a café but is so much more than just coffee and cake. We are a community café, we run groups and activities for children and adults, we have a community fridge which local businesses donate their ‘close-to-date’ goods to in order to help us both prevent unnecessarily adding to landfill while also helping people’s grocery budgets go a little further. We have baby weighing scales on site allowing new parents to come along and self weigh their babies and socialise with others. As you arrive you will be greeted with our beautiful community garden, in the matter of a few months it has been transformed from an empty field to a colourful oasis of beauty, thanks to the dedication of a team of gardening volunteers. There are meandering paths, glorious flowerbeds, raised vegetable beds, and soon there will be secluded seating areas where customers can sit and enjoy their refreshments. Behind this is our wild garden where our groups are held and where there is always laughter to hear; we have a willow arch, a dinosaur mound, sandpits, toys and lots of space to run, play, or simply just be, it also houses our newest addition – a 19ft Mongolian yurt which will be used for our groups and hired out to others wishing to use the space. Our place is for everyone; young and old. It’s a place to come with friends, a place to make friends, a place to come and sit, a place to come and chat. There’s always someone to talk to if you wish or plenty of room to relax and take a few quiet moments. Our café serves a variety of drinks both hot and cold, delicious cakes and bakes prepared fresh in our kitchen by our volunteer bakers, and light lunches. The café pays the bills to allow us to run all of our groups for free, and we keep our prices affordable. We rely on our amazing team of volunteers to allow us to continue; we have a team each day who take orders, serve tables, wash up and chat to and listen to customers.
We are looking to expand our volunteer team so if you think it might be something you would enjoy, please do get in touch with us.
We are in the building that used to be Holt and Corpusty Children’s Centre, we took over the lease in 2019 to provide somewhere for people to get together and we’d love to see you so please pop along for coffee and a slice of cake.
Volunteering on Holt Lowes in October
This October has seen a flurry of activity on Holt Lowes as several energetic groups have helped to clear some of the scrub, pines and silver birch on this internationally important site. Norfolk Wildlife Trust are experts in clearing certain areas of the Lowes by machine during the winter months but are unable to use their machines in the wet, boggy areas, or near the sites of hibernating adders. The new volunteer group, linked to the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, that now meets on the first Friday of every month is tackling the wet valley area near Holt Country Park. The Friday afternoon Gresham’s Gang are dealing with the seeded pine trees near the Mackeys Hill Car Park. They commented how they were enjoying being in the peaceful outdoors (as long as it didn’t rain!). Those pupils from Greshams who came as part of their Field Days worked in the wet area on the South side of the Lowes. One young man commented that it was very therapeutic to be clearing scrub with loppers. All are welcome to join our new group. We meet on the first Friday of the month during the winter. For more details contact: Fiona on fiona.jolliffe@gmail.com or Claire on 0776 0462693

Sharrington Christmas Fayre Time to give something back
With safety in mind, there will still be hand sanitisers and the layout will help promote social distancing and the free flow of fresh air, but the overall objective will be to help ignite the festive season and restore much needed jollity.
Since it was first built in 1953, largely by the local community on a site donated by a generous landowner, Sharrington Village Hall has been a venue for those living in the village and the surrounding area.
Time, indeed, to give a little something back. Why not come and take a look?
Back then, when the hall was opened by a leading member of the cast of the Archers, the residents were largely of working age, there were many fewer televisions, and the Hall was the focus of village life.
Over the years, the hall has faced its challenges as the village demographic has changed but none so great as was caused by the arrival of the coronavirus in early 2019 which brought all activities to a halt. Luckily, however, this also gave us the opportunity to redecorate and upgrade the hall’s kitchen. Sharrington is a fortunate village. It has residents who are creative, artistic and musical; it has people who value community spirit. Whilst mindful that care still needs to be taken, they recognise that the time has come to start to repay the support the hall has been given.
Having undertaken the appropriate assessments in the context of the ongoing risks posed by the virus, we have already hosted Terence Blacker in concert and welcomed back our free live music nights, regular ballet and exercise classes, singing and crafting groups, a wine tasting evening and soon anticipate the arrival of yoga sessions.
Sharrington Village Hall, The Street, Sharrington NR24 2PQ: www. Sharrington.org.uk Christmas Fayre: 10.30am -2pm Saturday 27 November 2021
The hall’s ever popular Christmas Fayre will make a welcome return at 10.30 am on Saturday 27 November. There will be festive stalls with Christmas decorations, wreaths and gifts, a pop-up cafe and a raffle for a turkey (sponsored by the very generous P & S Butchers) and many other prizes.

To add something a little different, local authors will be signing recent publications. From Holt Holistic Centre
Alison Courtney -- Acupuncturist Member Acupuncture Society and NHS background
Acupuncture helps us in so many ways for example local acupuncture has been demonstrated to increase the blood flow in an area as well as reducing inflammation and relaxing local muscles, that is why it is beneficial for sore and painful joints and injuries.
Acupuncture has a relaxing effect, we feel calmer, so we cope better by reducing our tension and the memory of the pain, all of which make our situation worse. So, the acupuncture helps us reset our response to pain and to illness. Therefore, one of the most common problems seen by acupuncturists is pain both chronic and acute and acupuncture does offer a strategy for relief.
Recent updates in acupuncture research indicate 50 conditions in which this treatment approach is as effective as other treatments. It would also appear that acupuncture may enhance the effectiveness of some medications maybe by helping our bodies be more receptive to them therefore making them more helpful for us and maybe at some point allowing us to reduce that medication. Another aspect of acupuncture treatment is it may often multitask, for example a person comes because of their headaches and while this is being treated, they find their digestion has improved and they are sleeping better, this is because acupuncture is working on multiple levels for our bodies. I am always happy to talk about whether acupuncture might be a treatment option for someone as it can be used for a diverse range of health issues. Call or email me and I will contact you back.

Kelling Probus Club
Kelling Probus Club held its October lunch meeting at The Dales Hotel Upper Sheringham on Thursday 21st October. Seventeen members were welcomed by chairman Gary Mitchell, a delicious lunch was served and enjoyed by all. Gary then welcomed new member Charles Cargill and gave a report on members unable to attend due to illness and caring for partners. He then welcomed Member Jack Broughton OBE. who gave a fascinating talk of his meetings with the Royal family. During his career in the RAF. Jack rose through the ranks during the post war period to become an Air Commodore. he outlined his various jobs in the service including the time during the Cold War when tensions were high. Jack then told us of his various encounters with The Queen, Prince Philip and various other Royals and then his work when he left the RAF with the RAF Association where he led teams of volunteers caring for ex-servicemen. He has still strong connections with this organisation and has worked hard for many years to look after the welfare of its members. Jack was thanked by Gary Mitchell for a wonderful talk. We meet for lunch and a speaker on the third Thursday of every month If you would like to know more about Probus and membership contact John Whittington on 01263 820333.

Anaesthetising Pets
At Toll Barn Vets we are honoured to be trusted with loved family pets when they need surgical procedures both in routine and life-threatening situations. When a pet needs an anaesthetic this is understandably a very worrying time for both pet and owner, especially when it is an emergency or a life threatening situation, and we know that understanding what is happening to your pet is really important.
Every veterinary practice is different and has different protocols and procedures for anaesthetics but at Toll Barn Vets we work to a well-established procedure. So what exactly do we consider when your pet needs an anaesthetic?
Firstly we consider the species as many different injectable and gaseous anaesthetic drugs exist. Importantly, different species (and sometimes even different breeds within the same species) respond differently to the each drug and therefore species and breed play an important role in our choice of the right drugs to use to keep your pets as safe as possible. Seeing so many different species and breeds means we have a wide choice available to us, including Sevoflurane, a special gas anaesthetic often used in human paediatric surgery so we are able to choose the very best option for your pet.
also try to book a later appointment for particularly nervous or anxious pets as this reduces their waiting time.
What about the anaesthetic itself? We hope there is never an anaesthetic complication but we also know it is incredibly important to be prepared just in case. Our Team run regular in house “Anaesthetic Emergency Simulations” to make sure that we are all ready to leap into action should the need arise. One of the key things in an emergency is being able to administer medication into a vein quickly which is why all our patients undergoing anaesthesia have intravenous catheters fitted. This also helps us to administer intravenous fluids to help keep their blood pressure stable. Our team use a full range of specialised multiparameter machines which accurately measure blood pressure, oxygen and carbon dioxide saturations, temperature, ECG, heart rate, breathing rate and breathing efficiency on patients ranging from the tiniest lizard or bird up to the largest dogs. Of course, all this monitoring is only as good as
Secondly, we perform a detailed pre-anaesthetic check. During this we check heart rate, temperature and breathing rate. We also check for underlying health issues that might affect the anaesthetic choice. Much like in human hospitals we use this information to produce an ASA Score (an objective measure of the patient’s health and fitness for surgery). This helps us to predict and avoid, or specifically manage, any potential complications during or after the anaesthetic.
the person using the equipment! We are very proud to only use qualified veterinary nurses rather than lay staff for all our anaesthetics, and this helps us detect and act on any changes that may occur, helping us to keep your pet as safe as possible. Following the anaesthetic, patients are recovered in our heated hospital wards where a qualified hospital nurse makes sure they are comfortable by performing regular “pain scores”, as well as making sure they have as many home comforts as possible to make their stay comfortable. Obviously this is a very brief summary of what is involved with anaesthetising your pet, so please give us a call on 01692 407126 if you would like to discuss your individual pets procedure.
PLUMBING & HEATING LTD FULLY QUALIFIED — 35 YEARS EXPERIENCE

Next, our team consider the patients stress levels. Our purpose built separate dog, cat and exotic pet hospital wards along with our calming diffusers and music systems, aim to keep pets calm but by assessing stress or anxiety levels in advance we can make sure pets receive appropriate pre-medication to keep them nice and calm, and avoid any changes that might impact the anaesthetic. Popular ‘Launch a Memory’ lifeboat to carry a further 5,000 names
Shannon lifeboat arrives, we’ll carry with us the names of 15,000 loved ones every time we launch.’
A new all-weather RNLI lifeboat to be based at Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk, will carry the names of a further 5,000 people, following record take-up of the original 10,000 names.
The Shannon class lifeboat Duke of Edinburgh, currently being built at the RNLI’s All-Weather Lifeboat Centre, is the third to be part of the charity’s ‘Launch a Memory’ fundraising campaign and the first to be based in England.
Back in June, members of the public were offered the opportunity to commemorate a loved one by making a donation online and submitting the name of someone they wanted to remember. Each name will` be featured within the lifeboat’s letters and numbers, or ‘decal’, ‘RNLI 13-46’, displayed on the vessel’s hull. In just four months, more than 10,000 people have pledged their loved ones’ names, prompting the RNLI to open up space to take the total to 15,000. A second decal will be placed on the lifeboat’s ‘wheelhouse’ – the cabin which sits at the top of the vessel.
The £2.5m Shannon class is the fastest all-weather lifeboat in the RNLI fleet. It was funded in part through an appeal in the local Wells community, and by the Civil Service charity The Lifeboat Fund. The new boat will be housed in a brand-new boathouse, currently under construction next to Beach Road and due for completion in time for the Shannon’s scheduled arrival in late 2022. Peter Rainsford, Chair of Wells Lifeboat, said: ‘We were so proud to be able to bring ‘Launch A Memory’ to North Norfolk, and we knew it would be popular, but we’ve been blown away by the speed with which these 10,000 names have been pledged. We’re incredibly thankful to all those who have made a donation. ‘RNLI lifeboat crews are busier than ever. The ‘Launch a Memory’ campaign, while a fundraiser for the charity, is also a way for us to say thank you to those people who support the lifeboat service, and our volunteer lifeboat crews. It’s humbling to think that when our new

There are three ways people can get the name of a loved one on the Launch a Memory lifeboat. Donations can be made online at rnli.org/WellsLaunch or by phone on 0300 300 99 90 (Monday to Friday 8am-6pm). There is a suggested donation of £50 with space to commemorate up to 15,000 names on the lifeboat.
Could You Make a Difference?
Change, Grow, Live is a charity which delivers the Norfolk Independent Visitors Service, and we are desperate to recruit committed and passionate volunteers across the whole of the county who would like to spend a day a month with a young person in care. The children and young people we work with have suffered abuse, neglect and often both; they often mistrust adults and need positive role models to show them that relationships can be trusting, healthy and positive. The role of an Independent Visitor can be immensely rewarding and fun; taking a child or teenager out once a month to have fun together by engaging in community activities or visiting places of interest. Minimum age for volunteer applicants is 21 and minimum commitment is for 2 years, once a month. Full training and support are provided, plus reimbursement of reasonable expenses. Local charities to benefit from Artisan Fair!
Do come along and join the artists and help support their chosen charities on Saturday the 20th of November, at the New Victory Hall, Neatishead NR12 8AD, from 10 to 3. Keep the date!
The Two Rivers’ Artists are a group of 7 talented people who live between the rivers Ant and Bure on the Broads. The group are renowned for their traditional skills and handcrafted work. Each November, the group holds a Festive Fair in Neatishead, and invite two local charities to join them. This year they’ll also be joined by five hand-picked, exceptional Norfolk artisans. Last year due to covid, it was a virtual event, and the artists were delighted to achieve 2,500 website hits which brought many sales. Now, lockdown has led to new designs, new ideas and new inspiration from this talented group, many of who have gone in new directions and added new designs. This year’s event, to be held on Saturday November 20th, at the Neatishead New Victory Hall, will see the Nancy Oldfield Trust join them. The Trust are based in Neatishead and provide opportunities for disabled and disadvantaged people, families and carers, to enjoy a boating experience under motor, sail or paddle on the Broads. Also joining the Fair will be the Friends of Neatishead School with their spectacular refreshments and cakes, so people visiting the event can enjoy a chat and a break with friends while soaking up the vibrant, artistic atmosphere. The 7 Two Rivers Artists are: James Arthur, photographer. Kit Calladine, printmaker. Fiona Johnson, silver smith. Fran Tubbs, photographer. Paul Williams, artisan woodworker. Jacky Witton, bespoke metalwork and sculpture; and Bob Payne, oil on canvas. They will be joined by: Sue Andrews, basket maker. Trisha Francis, ceramics. Keith Nash, water colours around Norfolk. Neil Gladwell, the traditional rope company; and Ros Wilson, woven tapestry.

Wells-next-the-Sea Men’s Shed granted NCC award to extend outdoor working space
Men’s Shed, or would like to join us, you’d be most welcome to come and see for yourself, the kettle is always on! Please visit our website, and view the Gallery page of expanding items we have created from recycled pallets and timber: www.wellsnexttheseamensshed.weebly.com
Creating a covered, Covid safe outside workspace has taken a major step forward following a grant from the Norfolk County Council’s Social Infrastructure Fund. The Fund is a capital grants initiative designed for voluntary and not for profit community entities to help develop their facilities following the Pandemic. The grants form a key part of Norfolk County Council’s Together, for Norfolk Plan to assist community groups throughout the county.
Rock and Roll Christmas Book
I learned to play guitar in 1969 by singing songs from the 50s and 60s by the likes of Chuck Berry, Elvis, The Beatles and The Stones and have been writing songs for over 30 years. In January 2021, I wrote and recorded a Rock and Roll Christmas song, playing all instruments myself and singing lead vocals with my wife adding the high harmonies. We thought it might be fun to make the song into a children’s book. Alistair at Newprint and Design in Fakenham recommended a talented Fakenham-based artist, Juliana Rands who was excited to take on the commission. We were overwhelmed to see what Juliana had produced in adapting my song lyrics into astonishingly creative illustrations which Alistair then skilfully transformed into a suitable book format. I have really enjoyed my first attempt at producing a children’s book and I am delighted with the result. I would like to thank everyone who has been involved with our project. The book, including CD is on sale for £7.99 at The Smokehouse - Glandford, The Reading Rooms - Kelling, Purple Patch – Alby, Cley NWT Visitor Centre and by emailing Fairlawnspublishing@outlook.com. Chris Moorhouse, High Kelling.
The Wells-next-the-Sea Men’s Shed, formed in 2019, is currently housed in a Portakabin and Sea Container. The grant will allow us to acquire the essential materials to build both a lean to against the Sea Container and a storage facility lean to against the Portakabin. This project will provide an all-weather outside workspace. Terry Kane, the Wells Men’s Shed’s Chairman said “We are delighted and grateful, to be awarded this grant from the Norfolk County Council’s Social Infrastructure Fund. It will significantly boost our activities and help attract new members. Our goal is to build it ourselves. We have a wide range of skills amongst our membership and this project will help draw us together as a team. Men’s wellbeing is central to the Men’s Shed concept, and this will be a great project to bond and share our skills.” The longer-term aim of the Wells-next-the-Sea Men’s Shed is to be the UK’s first Eco Men’s Shed using solar energy to provide electrical power. The Shed currently operates with a wide range of cordless tools as well as traditional hand tools. A selection of wooden items are made using reclaimed timber and pallets which are sold to cover our overheads. A metalwork shed is now planned to broaden our activities. We work on our own projects and come together to support Community Projects. This covered outdoor area means we can both safely operate in all weathers and provide external storage space for the recycled timber and pallet wood, which is currently taking up valuable space in the Portakabin. Gresham’s Dyson Building
MP Goes Back to School
Invited by the Chair of Governor's, Dr Graham Pickhaver, Astley Primary School had a very special visit from Duncan Baker MP on Monday 27th September. Mr Baker took a tour of the school, spending time visiting each class and talking to pupils. He met the school council and heard pupil voice, met parents in the playground after school and answered staff questions at the end of the school day. Staff pointed to Astley's excellent communication both within school and between school and parents. Topics of discussion ranged from Government communication with schools during the pandemic and the current fuel crisis.
We are hosting an 'Open House' for the new Dyson Building on Saturday 20th November, from 10am – 11.30am. If you would like a tour of our fantastic new building please get in touch, email ogclub@greshams.com or telephone 01263 714620 / 714629.
Headteacher, Jen Goakes commented that, 'Duncan's visit was a very positive experience; our children loved showing him their learning and asking him some fun and interesting questions. Staff appreciated and enjoyed the opportunity to share and discuss with Duncan, as well as hear his passions on improving the local community. Duncan’s comments on our wonderful team here at Astley made us feel extremely proud.'

The Holt Chronicle November 2021
Holt WI
Alan Cook Independent Financial Adviser
The October meeting of the Holt WI was held in the Lounge of the Venue Holt Community and Arts centre on the 20th October. After the usual notices we welcomed Steve Benson, our speaker of the month, whose talk entitled Tales of Holt was a fascinating and most interesting insight into the history of Holt. Tales of smugglers and a theatre and an enormous celebration on Spouts Hill to celebrate the ending of the Napoleonic wars kept his audience enthralled. There were questions afterwards and we talked about the Great Fire of Holt – an inferno which started in a market stall and swept through the town, burning the buildings and even the church. The President thanked Steve, then tea and biscuits were served and a raffle was held. The Holt WI holds its meetings every third Wednesday of the month between 2 and 4 at the Venue, and the next meeting, on November 17th will be the Annual Meeting. We welcome Anwen, Lady Hurt, as our speaker. New members are welcome to visit or join.

Rambling on for 40 Years!
Sheringham & District Ramblers, which formed 40 years ago, celebrated with an Anniversary Dinner at The Links Country Park Hotel that was attended by over 60 ramblers and guests. During the dinner there was a rolling show of photographs taken on walks and various rambler holidays over the years. Richard May Chair of the Norfolk Area Ramblers attended to represent the 11 rambling groups in Norfolk and gave a congratulatory speech.

The Holt Chronicle November 2021
At our meeting on Monday 11th October, Tony Leech gave us a fascinating talk, entitled, “Friend or Foe, Fungi in the Garden”. Fungi play a vital and major part in recycling minerals in the soil, so are essential to life on Earth. They do so by excreting digestive enzymes from their fine network of mycelium in the soil and absorbing the products. There is often a specific association between a fungus and a tree, for instance, the red and white Fly Agaric is usually associated with birch trees. In these instances, the mycelium enters the outer layer of its host whilst not being attacked but does not enter its cells (an ectomycorrhizal fungus). The host plant provides the fungus with sugars, and in return, the fungus supplies the minerals that the plant would not be able to absorb otherwise. The fungus’ network of mycelium can be vast and link several trees, so that a chemical communication between them is possible. What we call mushrooms or toadstools are the reproductive fruiting bodies of the fungi. They produce microscopic spores into the air, which are blown away to infect new areas. The micorrhizal fertilizers that gardeners might add while planting contain certain endomycorrhizal fungi, whose mycelium penetrate the host plant’s cells. Experiments have shown that these fungi can enhance plant growth. However, some endomycorrhizal fungi, such as rusts and mildews, are parasitic rather than symbiotic and can harm the plant. These are also plant specific, although the dreaded honey fungus will attack many of our garden plants as they are non-native, so have built up little resistance yet.
Mini-makeover treatment packages at the Coltishall Clinic for the festive season
and early sagging of neck and jawline then this package may be right for you. This includes radiofrequency treatment of the jawline and neck, clearlift laser and LED light therapy, this is followed by nefertiti lift muscle relaxing injections to weaken muscles responsible for neck bands and jawline sagging.
Why treatment combinations? A number of changes happen to us as we age. We have volume loss, over active muscles, sun damage and loss of elasticity. No single treatment can address all of these issues. Treatment combinations provide the best and natural results. We have invested in top of the range comprehensive technology and have the experience of using it effectively. We have designed these packages for reversing age related changes in one appointment. A kind of mini extreme makeover!
HEAVENLY HANDS Hands are often the most neglected parts of the body and often show signs of ageing. These include volume loss and skin changes that show pigmentation, loss of volume and prominent veins. We use 1.5 cc dermal fillers to plump up the hands and then IPL or q switched laser to tackle pigmentation. Call 01603 736487 to book your makeover.

The most newsworthy foe at the moment is the fungus causing Ash Die-Back disease. But there is some hope that, because ash trees reproduce sexually, they will eventually mutate to be far more resistant to attack.

. . . . . AND SO TO BED
As a celebration of the past season (fondly remembered despite Covid), and to look forward to expanded bowling next year, the Club has just held a most enjoyable lunch. As a relief from catering by our own ladies we brought in professional caterers who served a delicious two course meal. Our excuse for such extravagance was that it provided the opportunity to present the trophies to the winners of our internal club competitions. A few of the triumphant bowlers are shown in the picture. Our next two winter meetings are the Annual General Meeting and a Christmas Fair. Barry Pilgrim
After the Wimbledon Championships, the Centre Court receives punishing treatment; the previously immaculate turf is scarified (mechanically raked) to remove an unbelievable quantity of dead grass and then covered with 6 tons of soil. And so it is with our green. Scarification produced no less than 38 barrow loads of “thatch” and gave the grass a somewhat worn appearance. And then a mixture of no less than 4 tons of top dressing (resembling sand but with added goodness) was distributed onto a surface which had been thoroughly spiked and boosted with quantities of grass seed. All hard work for our volunteer groundsmen! We now hope that the additional seed will germinate properly before winter sets in. Some may think that it is now “and so to bed” for the Green until April but, in fact, throughout the winter it will be spiked regularly and brushed three times a week to help keep the moss at bay. Fingers crossed for a first-class playing surface in the Spring!
Hedgehog Haven
It's the start of the season for Autumn juveniles, this little one, Hannah, was found in a garden in North Walsham. She had fallen onto a patio and was struggling to get out. If possible, please put out some wild hedgehog food to help build them up for the winter along with a shallow dish of water. Hedgehogs are meat eaters, and unlike African Pigmy ones do not eat fruit. We are hoping to be at NW Garden Centre on Saturday 20th November, come along and say hello.

Have Fun with Blakeney Rowing Club Throughout the Winter
Your local rowing club is now based at Cox’s Boatyard near Barton Broad. Three or four times a week crews row the beautiful skiff Bluejacket along the varied and exciting channels of The Norfolk Broads. Each outing is a magical experience involving exercise, good company, humour as well as the probability of viewing a variety of wildlife. The rows are not competitive, timed events; the emphasis is on enjoying the fresh air and the beautiful setting. See pictures of rowers, or “Crabbers”, in action on the Blakeney Rowing Club web site at crablakeney.wordpress.com. Members of the club are already organising next summer’s season and the Annual General Meeting will be held at The Harbour Rooms, Blakeney, on Thursday 9th December at 7 pm. It is hoped to have other social gatherings during the year so that Crabbers can get together off the water as well as on. Why not try skiff rowing for yourselves? Come and enjoy exercise amidst beautiful scenery in like-minded company. Everyone is welcome. Contact club captain Humphrey at hborgnis@icloud.com to arrange a trial row. There will be three occasions in the coming months when anyone who is interested can come and meet club members and receive initial coaching during short outings on the water. Gain further information on the club website shown above and follow the club’s activities on Instagram and on Facebook. Looking forward to seeing you soon. Barry Howes.

Managing financial affairs under a lasting power of attorney
By Susan Dayment, Associate Solicitor, Hayes + Storr
Making a lasting power of attorney (also known as an LPA) for your finances is an important part of lifetime planning. An LPA should be set up well in advance of when it might be needed, although it can be difficult to predict when that might be. If in the future you have an accident or illness, like dementia, an LPA enables other people (your attorneys) to help make decisions on your behalf. In addition to managing bank accounts and selling property, an LPA clarifies your wishes on a wide range of financial decisions, including if you have a business or complex investments.
Funds You may have investments in certain funds which require your express consent or discretionary management funds to be set up before your attorneys can be authorised to deal with them.
Overseas assets If you hold overseas assets, an LPA made in England and Wales may not be recognised by the jurisdiction in which those assets are held. You will need legal advice for each jurisdiction to ensure your attorneys can act on your behalf in the different territories. Gifts Attorneys can make small gifts in limited circumstances on your behalf, but you may authorise them to make larger or more regular gifts. For example, you may wish to make such
gifts for tax planning purposes, or because you would like to provide financial assistance for family members who need extra support. Whatever the reason, you will need to include a specific authority to allow such gifts to be made.
Dependants You may be concerned about a family member or another dependant who relies upon you financially, especially if they are unable to manage their own finances.
Business assets If you have any interest in a business, you should ensure that the appointed attorneys have the necessary insight and business acumen to continue to run things smoothly. If you wish to appoint separate attorneys for your business decisions, you will need to make two separate financial lasting powers of attorney, one for your personal financial decisions and one for your business decisions.
Avoiding common mistakes Many people choose to appoint the friends or family closest to them without considering whether they are suitable for the role. If they are not good with their own money, think carefully about trusting them with yours. There may also be times where your interests could conflict with theirs.
• Your attorneys must always act in your best interests. • You may need to include specific instructions to extend your attorneys’ powers. • You should appoint more than one attorney or replacement attorneys who would step in if your first choice of attorney can no longer act for you. For further information, please contact Susan Dayment on 01263 712835 or email susan.dayment@hayes-storr.com.
This article is for general information only and does not constitute legal or professional advice. Please note that the law may have changed since this article was published.
Careful considerations • You can decide when your LPA comes into force.
