News from the Venue

A Note from the Editor

The other day I heard someone say: ‘My grandson has seen two monarchs, three prime ministers and four chancellors in his lifetime, and he is only four months old!’ It seems a day is a long time in politics, let alone a week. I suspect we have more upheaval to go through before things settle down to anything like it was before.

Meanwhile, we are still seeing record inflation and fuel poverty, with many people worried about what the winter will bring. There are many organizations ready to lend a hand, these include help with food and stay warm schemes. A good source of information of what is available is on the NNDC website. Go to www.north-norfolk.gov.uk and select Cost of Living Help. Enjoy your November magazine.

I can’t quite believe that Christmas is on the horizon again, but as ever we are gearing up at the Venue for another fantastic Community Christmas Lunch. We’ve been so blessed to be assisted this year by the amazing fundraising efforts of Gresham’s Senior School pupils under the guidance of Chaplain Jack Branford, who raised an astonishing £1000 to help fund the Café Christmas celebrations. Needless to say, this year it will be especially welcome and needed, as we expect to be very busy, and we will be putting this generous donation to good use, helping everyone who comes to the Venue to enjoy a wonderful Community event full of delicious food, great entertainment, Christmas music and a fun raffle. Also sponsoring the event again this year are Allards Butchers, who have generously donated the delicious turkeys that make the meal so special; our grateful thanks go out to Nigel and his team for once again blessing us. It is said that we only truly understand the nature of community when we come together in hardship, providing support, encouragement and friendship when it is most needed, and this will be particularly true this year. Whether you struggle with Christmas for the memories that it brings due to a loss or illness, are experiencing hardship in some way or just need to make some new memories, our Community Christmas Lunch is definitely the place for you. As always, we need and would love people to come along and be a part of the super team of volunteers that make the day go with a swing, so if you would like a different kind of Christmas this year, give us a call or pop into the Venue to get on the list; we have a lot of fun and a superb lunch! Any age or ability is welcome, including entire families so come and join in…you won’t regret it! We have the superb Jonathan Wyatt Big Band coming on 7th December to get us in the festive spirit, which you can book tickets for on Eventbrite, or pop into the Venue to buy them. At only £12 it’s a fabulous festive night out right here in Holt! The bar will be open at 6.45pm for mulled wine and mince pies before the performance. There’s also a chance to see a Royal Opera House Ballet screening of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland on Sunday 11th December at 2.30pm, a wonderful performance that the whole family will enjoy. Our daily warm hub The Cozy Café is up and running and serving up delicious homemade treats and hot drinks between 10 and 1 Monday to Friday in the lounge, hopefully helping people to turn off their heating at home and save a few pounds. Huge thanks to John Jarvis for his fabulous Monthly Memory Swap which has been enjoyed by such good numbers that we may have to change rooms and hold it in the Hall! It’s lovely to see people coming together once again and enjoying sharing their memories of Holt, and you have 2 more opportunities to enjoy this before Christmas. We look forward to welcoming you to the Venue over the coming festive period! If you would like to be involved or get more information about the activities and events at the Venue, you can call 01263 713427, email info@thevenueholt.com, or check out our website www.thevenueholt.com.

County Councillor Report for Holt Division

from County Councillor Eric Vardy

Advice for bird keepers in Norfolk amid avian influenza (Bird Flu) outbreaks There have been several outbreaks of the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus in Norfolk. Mandatory housing measures for all poultry and captive birds in Norfolk, Suffolk and parts of Essex are to be introduced from 00:01 on 12 October 2022, following a decision by the UKs Chief Veterinary Officer. The housing order legally requires all bird keepers in these hotspots to keep their birds indoors and to follow stringent biosecurity measures to help protect their flocks from the disease, regardless of type or size. Norfolk Trading Standards will be working with the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) to support businesses and minimise the risk of disease spreading further. The UK Health Security Agency has said that avian influenza is primarily a disease of birds and the risk to the general public’s health is very low. The Food Standards Agency has said that avian influenza poses a very low food safety risk, and that properly cooked poultry and poultry products, such as eggs, are safe to eat. The measures that APHA require people keeping birds to take to reduce the risk of spreading the disease are:

Housing all poultry and captive birds (including birds kept as pets). Cleanse and disinfect clothing, footwear, equipment, and vehicles before and after contact with poultry and captive birds – if practical, use disposable protective clothing. Reduce the movement of people, vehicles, or equipment to and from areas where poultry and captive birds are kept, to minimise contamination from litter, manure, slurry, and other products, and use effective vermin control. Keep records of all deaths, movement of poultry and poultry products and any changes in production. Thoroughly cleanse and disinfect housing on a regular basis. Keep fresh disinfectant at the right concentration at all farm and poultry housing entry and exit points. Foot dips should be covered to stop disinfectant getting diluted.

Minimise direct and indirect contact between poultry and captive birds and wild birds, including making sure all feed and water is not accessible to wild birds. Prevent access by poultry to ponds and watercourses and ensure that birds are kept in fenced or enclosed areas. The public are advised to keep to designated footpaths, not to feed wild birds, and keep dogs on leads. Don’t touch sick or dead birds, their feathers, or their droppings. If you see a dead bird, please report it to Defra’s helpline on 03459 335577. Sick birds should be reported RSPCA (0300 1234 999) who, dependent on the situation, may be able to offer.

Support for Norfolk entrepreneurs to take their idea from ‘bedroom to business’ The Business & IP Centre Norfolk, managed by Norfolk County Council’s Library & Information Service, is offering a free six-week online programme that will take budding business owners on a journey from ‘Bedroom to Business’.

Over the past 18 months, many people have had to find alternative sources of income, including considering setting up their own business. This programme will help aspiring business owners develop their idea and provide the tools needed to get started. Bedroom to Business is being delivered by MENTA Business Support and consists of six two-hour workshops with a chance for questions and one-to-one coaching sessions after each workshop. Starting on Friday 5 November, the six workshops will run weekly and cover topics including: pros and cons of being self-employed; identifying any additional skills needed; developing a business plan; business funding; registering your business. Workshops will be limited to a maximum of 10 people to allow participants to get the most out of the sessions. If anyone is unable to attend this programme, Bedroom to Business will run again starting in January. Participants will need to live, work or study in Norfolk or close to a Norfolk library to be eligible for this programme. For more information and to register, click Bedroom to Business or visit www.bipcnorfolk.eventbrite.co

Have your say on tax and spending plans People can have their say on the county council’s Council Tax and spending proposals, until 16 December 2022.

Norfolk County Council wants to hear people’s views on the level of general Council Tax, plus the adult social care precept, for 2023-24. You can have your say at www.norfolk.gov.uk/budget and paper copies of the consultation can be requested via email at haveyoursay@norfolk.gov. The council is consulting on: A proposed total increase of 2.99 per cent - 1.99 per cent for general Council Tax and one per cent for the adult social care precept – in line with the current budget planning and the expected level which will be set by the Government. People’s view on a rise of 4.10 per cent, as the council has set in previous years, and 10.1 per cent - in line with inflation - which would require a referendum.

The other savings proposals the council is consulting on include: Reducing the opening hours of the Norfolk Record Office (NRO) from 28 hours a week to 22.5 hours a week. Reducing weed spraying activities on the highway from twice a year to once a year. Reducing summer opening hours at Norfolk’s recycling centres and closing all recycling centres on Wednesdays. The consultation will run from 21 October 2022 to 16 December. Findings will be considered by the cabinet on 30 January, before the full council finalises the budget on 21 February 2023.

Fundamental Change in the Law Results in More Divorces

On 6 April 2022 the law surrounding divorces in England and Wales was changed radically. Before that a divorce could only take place based on one of five reasons and for an immediate divorce that could only be adultery or unreasonable behaviour.

This all changed in April. “No-fault” divorce came into operation in April. This enables a husband or a wife (or them jointly) to apply for their marriage to be brought to an end, but without having to give a reason. Under the old law it was often the case that behaviour was exaggerated to enable a divorce to take place, or marriages had to continue even where the spouses acknowledged that it was realistically over. No-fault divorce was intended to avoid arguments and animosity over an actual divorce, but the immediate result has been that, for the first three months following the new law coming into operation, substantially more divorces have been started than previously. It has been suggested that there was a period before the new law came into operation where divorces were not started and that has resulted in the increase following the April change. There was a concern when the new law was being discussed as to whether it would make divorces too easy; so time will tell as to whether the increased number of divorces being started will continue or whether the first quarter statistics just show that there was what has been described as “pent up demand”.

What the new law does not do is to make dealing with finances or children any easier. However, it is hoped that taking away the animosity around an

www.holtchronicle.co.uk

actual divorce itself will lead to a better attitude when dealing with fundamental long-term aspects such as finances and children are to be resolved. The emphasis with these areas remains on spouses and parents trying to reach agreement wherever possible. The Government has been trying to encourage mediation as an option giving “vouchers” to those willing to try mediation instead of more acrimonious and expensive Court Proceedings. Taking away arguments over whether a divorce should take place, and on what basis, will undoubtedly help in the correct tone being set between spouses that are splitting up and having a divorce, especially where children are concerned and involved.

The new procedure involves a divorce being applied for online through the Government Online Portal. What it does not do is to automatically give a process for dealing with financial arrangements arising from the divorce. This remains a crucial area. Likewise, the most important aspect of resolving any arguments over children may still need the involvement of a Court in resolving any disagreements between parents. It is to be hoped though that the new no-fault divorce law will help spouses and parents to work together more amicably and collaboratively. There is also the possibility under the new law of a joint application being made for a divorce whereas previously one spouse had to apply for a divorce against the other. Between April and June 2022 a total of 33,566 divorce applications were made in England and Wales. The majority were made under the new legislation and from a sole application, i.e. not joint. This is the highest level since the beginning

8

of 2012. Over the coming months and years we will need to see whether the no-fault divorce results in continued higher numbers of divorces. Also whether the long-term intention of more amicable divorces filters through to what happens when couples split up.

Covid has dominated our lives, but dementia has remained as the daily reality throughout for many families and we continue to receive an increasing number of enquiries from both families and individuals seeking support. Holt & District Dementia Support has looked to meet that need through the provision of the Poppy Café every Monday and Tuesday morning plus Poppy PM on the 2nd and 4th Thursday afternoons of the month. Our Home Visiting service provides the same social support within the person’s own home and allows the carer some time to themselves. Our monthly support group for carers, Poppy Friends, provides an opportunity for carers to get to meet with others facing the same challenges, have a coffee and share experiences. These services are all provided by local people volunteering their time. The more volunteers we have, the more families we can help. If you enjoy convivial conversation, fun activities, coffee and cake and the satisfaction of doing something very worthwhile, please consider becoming a volunteer with us. No prior experience is necessary. We may live in a time of uncertainty, but we intend to offer the certainty of our continuing support to those living with dementia. If you are living with dementia, are a carer or you would like to discuss becoming a volunteer, please do contact us for more information: Claire Sheringham Windows Oct 21_Layout 1 22/09/2021 16:08 Page 1 Roberts – Tel: 07760 462693 or e-mail: cgroberts17@gmail.com For Poppy Friends, please contact Helen Banham on 01263 711870.

SAINT ANDREW’S & ALL SAINTS NEWS The Parish of Holt with High Kelling

Dear Friends, If we ourselves would one day like to be remembered, then we have a duty to rem ember, and November is very much a month of remembrance. It is a month in which we remember those who have gone before us and not only the Saints in glory whose feast day opens the month. On the 2nd of November, on the feast of All Souls, we remember those we love but see no longer and we surround them with our prayers. Then of course, is Remembrance Sunday, the National Day of Remembrance, which this year occurs on Sunday 13th November. The nation once again pauses to remember our war dead and honour all those who have given their lives in the service of our country. Accompanying our remembrance, whether it is of the Saints, our departed loved ones or our nation’s war dead, is a belief in the resurrection of the dead; faith that life in death through the death and resurrection of Christ is changed and not ended. Such a belief enables our remembrance to be filled with hope; the hope that light has triumphed over darkness, love over hate, good over evil and life over death. And of course, in these difficult and trying times, hope in better times to come is something we are all in need of. But in order to make that hope a reality we must commit ourselves to working together for the common good of humanity and creation and for the building up our communities in mutual love and respect. Remembering the past helps us understand the present and as well as remembering the past we are also called to remember the needs of those around us today. Yet again, I have been overwhelmed by the community response to the recently launched Support Fund for those in our community who are experiencing real financial hardship. Being mindful of and responding to the needs of others will surely help restore hope in the dark and difficult days ahead. May our remembrance lead us to action in order that the sacrifice and lives of many who have gone before was not in vain. Kindest regards,

Fr. Howard

Copeman Centre Coffee Morning Thank You

NWT North Norfolk Group and Cley Bird Club

Birds of Bardsey Island An illustrated talk by Steve Stansfield

Dear Jo, Could we please give the biggest 'thank-you ever' to the wonderful people who attended the Macmillan Coffee Morning at the Copeman Centre, Briston on Friday September 30th - who supported us so well, and also to all those who volunteered to help on the day, made cakes, ran stalls, and gave freely of their cash, their time and their talent to make it such a success - and to the Copeman Centre committee, who let us have the hall completely free of charge for the day ....... and the result was a wonderful £1215 for the Macmillan fund! Thank you all - here's to next year! Kind regards from Mick and Carol

Smoke

There’s smoke in the air, From where does it blow? It blows from the battlefields Of long ago! It blows from the blood stained Banks of the Somme, And the cornfields of Flanders, That’s where it blows from!

It blows from the ruins Of many a fine City, The ‘warmongers’ bombed Without reason or pity. It blows from the mouth Of a clamouring gun, And the chimneys of Auschwitz, That’s where it blows from! It blows from the fires Of hatred and greed, Fuelled by those that think War can succeed. It blows from the embers Of hope almost gone, And the ashes of freedom, That’s where it blows from. T.J.L.

Free Cycling Support from Active Fakenham in November 2022

Following our successful Dr Bike sessions in the summer, Active Fakenham are offering some new opportunities. These include cycle safety checks and mini service, workshops and guided rides. They are all free to attend but you need to book. The project runs through November and dates are on the Active Fakenham website www.activefakenham.org.uk Dr Bike on Fakenham Market. At one of our pop-up Dr Bike events our friendly mechanic will undertake FREE safety checks and minor repairs to ensure that bikes are safe and working effectively. Anything that we can’t fix on site, we will let you know exactly what you need to do and suggest some local bike shops/mechanics who may be able to help Trevor Brown, who used to own a cycle shop in Fakenham, will be carrying out some of the work and leading some of the rides. Trevor said, “we see a lot of bikes which could be dangerous or just set up better. This is a chance to get your bike checked. We are not selling bikes, but we may be able to lend one for the rides or it may be a chance to have a go on a different bike as we have some we can loan.” Workshops and small group training. At the workshop you will

bring your bike and be guided through a safety check. These will be small groups and we will aim to teach you how to fix minor problems to make your bike safe. Rides. Each ride will be under six miles, and you will be guided to a café or pub (no alcohol!) where we will stop to buy you a quick reviving drink.

Can you spare even an hour a week?

We often hear about the ‘hidden carers’, usually unpaid members of families supplementing or even taking on the full care of older people in order for them to remain living at home. Statistics show that 2/3 older people over the age of 65 have a partner living with them and this reduces to 1/3 when over 85 years. It is getting harder for older people especially to obtain the right amount of care to meet their needs for personal support but also to avoid loneliness and isolation.

Age Concern North Norfolk has a day centre open 4 days per week but we are running below the numbers we could actually cater for. We are also providing over 550 meals per month to people who attend the day care or the Lunch club but also to people living in their own homes between Cromer and Holt. We have a great capacity and willingness to support as many people as possible this winter to get through what is going to be a difficult time for us all. However, although we have qualified care staff, we still need the support of our volunteers to supplement our services in the day centre but particularly with the delivery of meals.

Unusual Entertainment for Weybourne WI

Yo our one-stop Christmas Shop Visit us at www.bawdeswellgardencentre.coN for upcoming events and more!

Celia Howe, President, welcomed 33 members and 3 visitors to the Village Hall on Wednesday, 5th October. The meeting started with a minute’s silence, to reflect on the death of Her Majesty the Queen. There was a page from a book of condolence for members to sign if they wished.

Items of business discussed included dates of interest groups and details of forthcoming meetings. Jean Benham was thanked for organising a Coffee Morning for MacMillan Cancer Support, which had raised the grand sum of £715.00.

We were then entertained by the Fool’s Puppit Theatre Company. Julie and Roddy Mackenzie have been performing with their puppets for over 20 years and members enjoyed interacting with their tale of ‘The Great Worm of Webbun’.

Afterwards, Julie showed us a selection of their puppets and described how she had made them. She also explained how the puppet shows had originally started during their involvement with Tudor re-enactment events at Kentwell Hall. Both were dressed in authentic Tudor outfits, which had been made by Julie.

Roddy had brought along 4 Hurdy Gurdys and demonstrated how each of them worked. Members asked a variety of questions. The vote of thanks was given by Pat King. The Fool’s Puppit Theatre will be performing their Christmas Show at Strangers Hall in Norwich during December. After tea and biscuits, the meeting closed with the drawing of the raffle.

Coconut Slices

Despite the current cost of living crisis and all of us having to tighten our belts, we also need a small treat every so often to lift the spirits. With this in mind, I have tried to select a recipe which uses ingredients which you probably already have in your cupboard and is quick and easy to do. It is an old WI recipe which I

remember my mum making when I was a child and it always felt like a treat. The recipe makes 24 slices and if you make it when you already have the oven on for something else, if not too costly to bake. You will need a 12” x 9” Swiss roll tin.

Ingredients 225g self-raising flour Pinch of salt 120g softened butter 85g caster sugar ½ beaten egg 3 tablespoons jam (I use raspberry) 120g desiccated coconut 1 tablespoon milk

Method

Mix together the coconut and remaining sugar and mix in the milk. Spread over the jam and press down lightly with the back is a spoon. Bake for 30 – 40 minutes, turning the tin so that it bakes evenly. Remove from the oven when golden brown and before the coconut burns.

Anything with pie in the title just has to be good; who doesn’t love a great pie and mash dinner as the evenings draw in and the temperature goes down? Of course, you can go and buy one from the supermarket, but they really are the easiest things to make yourself, and with the availability of excellent ready rolled pastry also one of the quickest. This one requires no meat and can be adapted for vegans too if you use soya cream, which can be bought easily now and keeps for ages in the fridge, making it very user friendly. It also tastes great and behaves exactly as dairy cream; I make a point of always having it in the house. Roasting veg before using it gives it a heightened flavour and sweetness, which works amazingly well in a pie, particularly the garlic; I promise you it is worth the extra work. It is using seasonal veg so saves you money whilst delivering lots of nutritious bang for your buck. You could batch cook a number of these pies to save money and time and freeze them cooked. This tastes so delicious even the meat eaters are going to want it!

pre-heated oven on 180° for approx. ½ hour, or until almost cooked through and slightly browned, then remove and set aside. Meanwhile, gently fry the onion and leek for 10 mins with a tsp dried thyme and add in the mushrooms, frying for a further 5 mins. Add in enough stock to just cover the veg and stir well, bringing up to the boil. Sprinkle in your thickener until you have a good thick consistency and take off the heat. Stir in the cream, add in the celeriac and squash and squeeze the garlic out of the skins into the mix and stir, adjusting your seasoning to taste. Place into a deep oven proof dish and cut the puff pastry out to cover the pie, pricking it a few times to let the air escape. Place into your preheated oven for approx. 30mins until the pastry is cooked through and golden and serve immediately. Carolyn Burn

Three Times a Charm for Stage Direct

Stage Direct amateur drama group are about to perform their new play ‘The Female of the Species’ by Joanna Murry-Smith at Sheringham Little Theatre. Following on from Stage Direct’s wonderful fundraising success for Sheringham Little Theatre earlier in June, with ‘One O’clock from the House’, they hope to continue their run of success with this, their third show this year at Sheringham Little Theatre, being performed on the 11th and 12th of November 2022. With new members joining their troupe, the audiences will get a chance to espy some new raw acting talent on stage.

¼ celeriac, peeled and cut into small chunks 1 butternut squash, peeled and cut into chunks 6 garlic cloves, left whole and in the skins 1 large white onion, diced 1 leek, quartered lengthways and chopped Punnet mushrooms, quartered Dried thyme Veg stock and thickener such as Bisto Small carton double cream, or soya cream Pack ready rolled puff pastry

‘Female of the Species’ was premiered in London’s West End in 2008. Joanna’s plays have been performed in Australia and worldwide. ‘Female Of the Species’ is a “deliciously wicked” play that "deftly” entices the viewer into the other realms of farce. Margot Mason, a pioneer of the 1970s Women's Liberation movement has won international adulation for her books on the subject but now, the aging author has hit writer's block. Struggling alone in her country house, she is surprised by a visitor, a student, idealist and daughter of one of Margo's most dedicated followers. Initially delighted, Margo's feelings soon change when her visitor produces handcuffs and a gun and proceeds to hold her prisoner. Tickets are £12.50 and are available online at www. sheringhamlittletheatre.com or from Sheringham Little Theatre box office on 01263 822347.

Method

Start by tossing the celeriac, garlic cloves and butternut squash in a little olive oil, seasoning with salt and pepper and roasting in a email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

salt and 25g of the sugar, rub in the butter until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs. Add the beaten egg and a little cold water and bring together to a stiff paste. Wrap and chill in the fridge for 15 mins. Roll out the pastry on a floured board to fit the Swiss roll tin, not forgetting to bring it up sides. Spread the jam generously over the pastry base.

Back by Popular Demand: Christmas Comedy at the Grove!

Christmas is always a time for good cheer, and now North Norfolk residents can gear up for the festive season with three nights of the finest comedy at the Grove in Cromer. Sundown – the Grove’s event space, in two giant tipis – will host the return of Christmas Comedy evenings on Thursday evenings in December. The nights debuted last Christmas and were a smash hit, with comedians from all over the country entertaining full houses with a laugh minute gags and side-splitting stories. Added to which were ‘loaded tables’, featuring Sundown’s unique tapas and pizza, and arrival drinks too. Several of 2021’s stars, including Mark Simmonds and John Mann, are returning this year, and host Danny Ward is already looking forward to the events. “Last year’s shows were brilliant; up-for-it crowds, delicious food all in a really unique venue,” he said. “It’s great to be working out of London occasionally so I’m really pleased to be coming back.” Grove partner Richard Graveling is hoping the nights will be a repeat of 2021. “We all had an amazing time last year,” he said, “and we’re anticipating another superb season this time around. There’s nothing quite like it in the area and everyone who came had a wonderful time. The acts are absolutely tremendous and they are special nights very much enjoyed by everyone who came along.” Tables are already selling fast and anyone interested is encouraged to book tickets at thegrovecromer.co.uk/events or via 01263 512412.

From Holt Consulting Rooms Have you a problem with ear wax build up?

Ear wax build up can cause many problems. The ear has a self-cleaning mechanism, but this can be easily disrupted if there is a physical obstruction such as hearing aids or ear microphones. It can also be damaged by using cotton wool buds or introducing other foreign objects into the ear. Wax can become problematic if it is hard or dry and if it is made in large amounts. Wax production can be stimulated by frequent chewing, living or working in a hot dusty environment or having a high fat diet. There is no safe way to clear this build-up of wax yourself at home, but use of sodium bicarbonate drops can help to break the wax down and olive oil will make it easier to remove and helps to moisturise the dry skin in the ear. It is also quite common to have eczema in the ear, this will be made worse if the skin in the ear is not moisturised. It can lead to cracked bleeding skin and infections of the ear canal. Do not use sodium bicarbonate drops if you suspect eczema in the ear or if the ear is sore at all. The safest method of ear wax removal is by professional micro-suction. This is a procedure which involves the removal of wax under direct vision with a magnifying loupe. A small suction catheter is used to access the wax along with specialised instruments as needed. New Sensory Sessions for babies, toddlers and pre-schooler’s coming to Wells-Next-The-Sea. Are you a local parent or carer to a new baby, toddler or pre-schooler? Did you know that our award nominated story-themed sensory-play sessions are coming to Wells-NextThe-Sea from late October 2022? Set up and run by local mum and qualified and experienced teacher Rachel, the sessions are designed to introduce story- themed sensory play to babies from birth. With mini-munchkin sessions aimed at babies (from new-born) and Story Explorers sessions for toddlers and pre-schoolers who are up and active; all activities encourage development through exploration, play and fun! A local mum who brings her 1 year old son Harry to West Norfolk sessions said: “Harry loves his sessions! It was the first time I’ve ever seen him off walking.” Rachel who set up and runs Munchkin and me explained: “I love seeing the happy faces each week as we head off on a new multi-sensory story adventure with our giant puppets Oscar and Mabel who all the children adore. We bring the stories to life with props, play activities, music, rhyme, messy play, lights and all-round fun! I feel strongly about the importance of supportive communities for parents and carers who can often feel lonely or isolated when caring for a baby. Our groups are also designed to make time for you too and to actively encourage supportive friendships among all the families who attend.” Sessions will run on alternate Mondays at Wells Community Hospital during term time. It is a fantastic venue with free parking, and they also have a welcoming community cafe, so you get the chance to spend some time chatting over a cuppa ☕ and cake 🧁 to other parents or carers before or after sessions.

Kayleigh mum to Evie aged 5 months who attends Munchkin and Me sessions near Kings Lynn said: “We love the sessions. It’s the highlight of our week!” Munchkin and Me recently made the finals of the Muddy Stiletto Awards for Best Children’s Business in Norfolk. You do need to book a space to join so please visit Rachel’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/munchkinandme.co.uk/ or Instagram page: https://www.Instagram.com/munchkinandme.co.uk to read the fantastic parent and carer reviews or to find out more. You can book classes by visiting https://munchkinandme.bookwhen.com The Hive Café. During the colder months the Hive Café will be open as a warm space for all, offering drinks and light lunches. It is a great place to meet up with friends and family or spend time after one of our exercise classes. We currently have programme of exercise classes for every ability, ranging from seated exercise to high impact combat classes. If you would like more details of future events, give Carol a call on 01263 860844. The live music scene in Briston continued in great style on Friday October 14th, when ace keyboard player Michael Sullivan wowed the crowds with his amazing playing skill at the Yamaha Tyros 5 keyboard. His programme was just so varied - from The Pirates of Penzance Overture to the Maple Leaf Rag, Duelling Banjos to Autumn Leaves played in the style of a 1950's Hammond organ, the great music just kept coming. Then his wife Elspeth stepped up to the microphone with her amazing voice with numbers such as True Love Ways, Sing, and some fabulous Carpenters hits. The Copeman Centre at Briston puts on seven or eight live music shows each

Keeping your pet smiling!

When detected early dental disease can often be treated with brushing, however, as disease progresses treatment requires antibiotics, scale and polishing and even extractions. Not all dental treatments are the same and dental treatment should involve a thorough examination under general anaesthesia where every tooth is examined visually and with a special probe. Dental X-rays should be performed to assess the After extent of disease below the gum line in the root / socket area as this is invisible to the naked eye. These investigations determine the extent of disease and ideal treatment options. At Toll Barn we have a fully equipped dental suite including dental x-ray and our in-house vets have a particular interest in dentistry and are always happy to discuss treatment and prevention options for your pet.

We all know dental check ups are essential for our children and ourselves but what about our pets? Dental disease can affect all species and is regularly seen in cats and dogs over 3 years old. Initially invisible plaque causes gum reddening (gingivitis) which progresses Before to mineralised brown tartar (calculus) that frequently requires dental scaling. Caught early gingivitis can be reversed, however, over time it progresses to periodontitis with tooth loss and infections of the tooth, gum and jaw bone, with a risk of infection spreading to other organs via the bloodstream. Dental disease in cats poses particular challenges as they also suffer from chronic gingivostomatitis, a disease where inflammation spreads from the gums to the rest of the mouth. In this condition the body mounts an over-exaggerated immune response to tartar and plaque causing painful inflammation. Treatment is complex and may involve tooth removal, antibiotics and immunosuppression, and should be discussed with your vet.

Prevention is always better than cure and our team of qualified veterinary nurses are happy to provide our clients with free of charge dental appointments to show you how to provide the best dental care for your pet. If you are concerned about your pets dental health, or want to get your puppy or kitten started on the right track with oral health, or just want to discuss our specialised dental treatments including our state-ofthe-art dental x-ray, please contact our team on 01692 407126.

Similarly, Feline Resorptive Lesions affect large numbers of cats. These lesions erode the area between the tooth crown (above gum) and root (below gum) causing teeth to fracture. Advanced lesions can be detected by visual inspection, however, early lesions are very painful but only detected by specialised dental x-ray and therefore dental x-rays are always recommended.

Bonfire Night Facts

On 5 November we celebrate Bonfire Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Night. The tradition marks the discovery of Guy Fawkes in the cellar of Westminster in 1604. Had Guy Fawkes managed to light his 2,500kg of gunpowder (36 barrels) he would have caused damage within a radius of almost 500 metres. The Houses of Parliament are still searched by the Yeomen of the Guard just before the State Opening to ensure no-one has hidden in the cellars. The first known display in England was at the wedding of Henry VII in 1486. Until 1859, it was illegal not to celebrate Bonfire Night in the UK.

Families can enjoy a magical Christmas journey aboard a traditional steam-hauled train as they steam non-stop from Sheringham up the whole length of the line to Holt, before travelling back to Weybourne to meet Santa himself and receive a special gift. Passengers can sit back and relax with complimentary refreshments served to the table, and elves to keep them entertained!

The Holt Society

‘Saffron in Norfolk’ is the title of the talk by Dr Sally Francis at the Venue, Holt Community Centre on Monday Dec 5th hosted by the Holt Society. Sally, a born and bred and Oxford educated Norfolk botanist is the proprietor of Norfolk Saffron based near Burnham Market. They are the only commercial grower in the county. Sally's research background in academia has led to her establishing this modern-day saffron farm. Hear about the business now and the complex and extensive history of growing saffron here in Norfolk. https://www.norfolksaffron.co.uk Doors will open at 6pm for a 6.30pm start. Drinks will be available from the bar. The hall will be laid out in bistro table style. The Society very much welcome visitors, all tickets must be pre booked at £7 per person. For tickets, please email holtmembership@outlook.com. and for details of membership or follow the link on http://www.theholtsociety.org

High Kelling Garden Club

At our October meeting, garden designer Andrew Sankey gave us a lively and informative talk about the history of Kew Gardens over the centuries. Originally, Edward 1 had a royal manor on the site, which developed as two separate royal estates of Richmond and Kew until 1771, when George 111 finally pulled them together. Each successive owner used the estates for different purposes, building then tearing down various palaces and follies. After accompanying Cook on his first exploration of Australia and New Zealand, botanist and socialite Joseph Banks became close to the king and, over the next 50 years, introduced 7000 exotic plants (and some exotic animals, like the kangaroo) to the gardens, making it the greatest botanical exchange facility in the world. However, George 1V had no interest in the gardens and they were neglected for nearly twenty years until William Hooker, a protege of Banks and anxious to save the collection, asked to become head gardener. Several generations of the Hooker family subsequently ensured their continued botanical success, introducing glasshouses and popularising the 300acre gardens, which could be visited for a penny. Sadly, High Kelling Garden Club’s treasurer is moving away shortly, and we are having some difficulty replacing him. If you are happy with simple bookremoved. keeping and could help us with this reasonably easy task, for an hour or so each month, please contact hkgcchair@gmail.com.

Holt Represented at Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral

If you are interested in the work of the Royal British Legion and would like to discuss becoming a member, please contact Lauren Griffiths. Honorary Secretary on mob no: 07850 649160, or by email: Holt.Secretary@rbl.community

The Holt and District Branch of the Royal British Legion was honoured to have represented the community at this historic event. Mr Brian Bayley, our Standard Bearer, was specially selected as one of a small contingent of RBL Standard Bearers to participate in Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral. Brian has represented the Branch at a number of occasions, including November Remembrance Services locally and at the Royal Albert Hall, and it was only fitting that he was chosen to play a role at the State Funeral. If you are a veteran or serving member of the armed forces, we invite you to join our Remembrance Parade on 13th November 2022, you do not have to be a member of the Royal British Legion. We meet at the Holt Methodist Church Hall at 10.30am and then march to the Memorial in the town centre in preparation for the outdoor service at 11am.

Come to The Broads with Blakeney Rowing Club

Bodham and Beckham Village Hall Film Club

Please note we are licensed so please, if you would like a drink whilst watching the film, bring a bottle.

This is an enjoyable time of the year despite the onset of seasonal wind and rain. At the time of writing, social rowing outings are continuing from Blakeney as shown in the range of exciting photographs on the club web site at crablakeney.wordpress.com. Please take a look. The club’s other skiff is now at Cox’s Boatyard, Barton Turf, on The Broads. Expeditions have now started from this base. Rowers can now be seen heading across Barton Broad, down the River Ant to How Hill and beyond. The picture accompanying this article shows “Crabbers” returning to base after an enjoyable two hours on the water. There will be many such rows during the winter rowing season. What a great choice of rowing venues currently on offer – Blakeney or The Broads!! An important event in the competition schedule is the Norwich based race for the Carrow Cup on 3rd December 2022. This is the oldest race on the competition calendar and involves many types of oared craft. It’s always a great day on the water. The date and time for this year’s club AGM will be Tuesday 22nd November at 7pm. The meeting will take place at The Harbour Rooms. All “Crabbers” will be welcome to discuss rowing matters and to socialise in the bar. Many thanks to The Harbour Room staff for hosting. This has been a year in which many new members have been welcomed to your local rowing club. If you want to know more about the club, or try skiff rowing for yourselves, contact Humphrey at hborgnis@icloud.com. Beginners and returning rowers are always welcome. Coaching and helpful advice will be available. Remember, you can keep up with the club’s activities on Instagram, on Facebook and on the club notice board on Blakeney Carnser. Come along and enjoy a row at Blakeney or on The Norfolk Broads. Until then, stay safe. Barry Howes.

Wednesday 16th November – 7.00pm: – The film deserves 5 stars for the music and visual spectacular it is. “ELVIS” 2022 (12) starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks. Review: Not my first choice... But Wow was this good!! Wednesday 30th November – 7.00pm: Based on the Best-Selling Global Phenomenon “WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING” 2022 (15) starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Taylor John Smith, Harris Dickinson. Review: Where the Crawdads Sing is a well-made movie with a story and a character that keep you heavily invested. The romance aspect really works, and this is coming from a guy who doesn't normally go for romance. Pulling on your heartstrings is an understatement. Wednesday 14th December – 7.00pm: Fame is Never Plain Sailing “FISHERMAN’S FRIENDS 2: ONE AND ALL” 2022 (12) starring James Purefoy and Dave Johns. Review: Terrific…..Hugely Enjoyable.

Bodham and Beckham Craft Club

Don’t forget Crafters.. The Bodham and Beckham Craft Club takes place in the Village Hall on alternate Wednesdays from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. The next meeting is on 16th November. The cost is £3.00 per meeting to include refreshments. Bring any crafts that you are interested in and socialise with like-minded people. Come along and join the banter and chat, see if it’s the sort of thing for you or please contact Helen Bruford on 588122 for more information.

Bodham & Beckham BYO Christmas Quiz

The very popular BYO (Bring your own drinks and nibbles) Christmas Quiz takes place in the Village Hall at 7.30pm on Friday 9th December. Doors open at 7.00pm. Table of four £3.00 per entrant. Selling your home to appeal to energy efficient buyers

By Melanie Robson, Associate, Hayes + Storr.

Energy efficiency matters more to some home buyers these days than the size of the garden. According to a recent survey by Money.com, solar panels now rank ahead of ensuite bathrooms and, as energy prices rise, this trend looks set to continue. So, if you are selling your home, how can you make your house appeal to today’s energy efficient buyers? Fortunately, you can improve your home’s performance and make it easier to sell without spending a fortune. Your EPC can help you

You will need a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) before marketing your home, and it will then be available to any potential buyer. The EPC is a short report, produced by an accredited energy assessor, on the energy efficiency of a property. It will rate your home A to G, with A being the most energy efficient grading. The EPC should also include recommendations to improve your home’s rating. An EPC lasts for ten years. So, your home may already have one. If you cannot find a copy, you can check on the website: www.gov.uk/find-energy-certificate. Take care to consider the EPC’s recommendations before putting your home on the market. It may reveal some straightforward ways to make your home more energy efficient. If you are commissioning a new EPC, you may want to increase your home’s energy efficiency first. There may be cost-effective ways of doing this, for example, by switching to LED bulbs or

insulating your loft. You can find suggestions at Simple Energy Advice. Having a higher EPC rating may be more important for some types of property, from 2025, the Government may require rental properties to have at least a C rating. So, if your property could appeal to buy-to-let investors, then you may want to bear this in mind. Currently a privately rented property must have a rating of no less than E. Every home is unique, and what works well for one property may be more difficult to implement in another. Some properties may not be suitable for cavity wall insulation due to solid walls or because the work may aggravate damp issues. Upgrading to a new boiler, or installing double, or even triple, glazing could make your home more attractive to buyers concerned about rising energy costs.

Make sure you obtain all the necessary statutory consents

Other consents you may need

Occasionally, there may be title restrictions which mean you need a third party’s consent. If you plan major work, such as installing solar panels, then you should check your property’s title for any restrictions first. Keep the paperwork safe

Remember to keep any guarantees or warranties safe. Your buyers are likely to require these before completing their purchase.
