A Note from the Editor
Get your woolies out and fire up that central heating, the Autumn equinox has rolled by and there is a chill in the air. By the time you read this hopefully the rush for petrol will be over and we can relax and turn our thoughts to cosy evenings in front of the fire. Covid booster jabs are starting to roll out, don’t forget to get yourself protected for the Winter season. It is vital we remain cautious to avoid a further wave of infections. Bonfire night approaches and with talk of a shortage of domestic fireworks this year, why not take advantage of one of the organized public displays, safer for everyone and far more spectacular than anything at home. Also remember to keep your pets safe and quiet at home during the festivities. Whatever you are up to, enjoy your October magazine. Keep safe and well.

Holt WI
On the 15th September, Holt WI held its second meeting of the year in the Lounge at the Venue, Holt Community and Arts Centre. This room is lovely and on that sunny afternoon with the doors open and the sun streaming in, it felt like summer was back, especially after the torrential rain the day before. Our guest this month was Bridget Pearson who talked about her life as a vet and how she was determined to be one from the age of 4. Her story was fascinating, and we all lapped it up! Mostly it was happy endings, but of course, sometimes distressing. Bridget started working in the 1980’s, when she said things were very different. For example, far more women train to be vets nowadays and there is the use of CT and MRI scans. From day to day working, to emergencies when you could be called out in the middle of the night, the job requires stamina and dedication. Of course, sometimes there were not happy endings and the things that the vet has to do in these cases is difficult and sometimes very upsetting. In spite of the hours, Bridget didn’t mind emergencies, where you never knew what you would find; sometimes the location was in the middle of a field. On happy occasions it would be an animal in labour, and she talked about the difficulties of delivering a calf. There was no general anaesthetic, just local, and the animal would move about and sometimes give the vet a push, or lie down on the wrong side, but all was finally achieved. Its lucky I have long arms she said, waving them about. And you need to be strong. A calf could weigh 17 kilos. And the cow’s four stomachs could also sometimes make delivering a calf a bit tricky! After retirement Bridget volunteered with the charity Worldwide Veterinary Services and went out to Kiev to help with a cat and dog sanctuary where some 1000 dogs and 200-300 cats are homed. Rescued from the streets they are neutered and protected from people who treat them badly. And she still works, mainly in emergencies with large animals. Scans and tests may have revolutionised care but, in an emergency, there is no chance of these; it is the vet with her expertise and the animal whose life sometimes depends upon her. After the talk there was the usual raffle, tea and biscuits and a good deal of chatter. The secretary then told us about all the many events happening in the area; a jigsaw challenge and a scrabble competition attracted our President and Treasurer, an afternoon at a WI meeting can be instructive and fun and a great way of making friends. Meetings are held at the Venue on the third Wednesday of the month between 2 pm and 4pm and new members are very welcome.

News from The Venue
I hope you are enjoying the transformation to the front of the Venue, with our new gates now up and providing us with much greater security around the building as well as an improved look. Our new lit advertising boards are providing a much better area for us to promote our events, fundraisers, groups and activities that take place, hopefully making it easier to keep the town informed of all the great things that happen in the Venue. Thank you to Simon Drury (Shift It Fix It) and Cooks Electrical for helping us to improve the outside areas, and for all the hard work they have put into the Venue over the last year. Our first Theatre event was enjoyed by over 100 people in September and proved what a great place the Venue is for this type of entertainment; thank you to Stage Direct for your commitment and for providing us with a great show. We hope to be bringing you more productions in the next year (if anyone fancies helping us to put Panto on next year, please contact me!) We are so excited about our upcoming Live Jazz Nights in partnership with the Holt Festival, kicking off on 6th October and every first Wednesday of the month thereafter, with an exciting line up of musicians providing us with quality entertainment to help us through the long dark nights of the winter. Huge thanks to our wonderful patron Anwen Hurt for helping us to develop these evenings. Look out also for the first of a new season of Royal Opera House Screenings featuring the best of their back catalogue starting with The Nutcracker in December. The amazing Jeff Short Swing Combo are also coming to town, bringing us a live music tribute to the Sixties on 2nd November, providing us with a nostalgic afternoon of entertainment at a very affordable ticket price. With all our events, we aim to keep prices as low as possible to enable as many people as we can to enjoy quality entertainment in the Venue. With all that’s going on it’s an exciting time for the Arts this season. We’ve been very privileged to host some wonderful private parties and gatherings over the past few weeks, the largest being a wedding for 100 people. The Venue looked wonderful all dressed up for the festivities, and our amazing volunteers and staff worked their socks off to make the day extra special for the family. The Venue is a very complex project to run, and many are not aware of just how much work goes into making it work for all who wish to use and enjoy it. Much of that work is done by volunteers who dedicate a huge amount of time and commitment to ensuring the smooth and professional running of the Centre, and for which we are very grateful. Do pop into the Venue for a chat and a look around if you are considering a private function or party; with a fully licenced well stocked bar, large well-lit and decorated rooms and comfortable furniture, plus great sound and technology equipment all at very affordable prices we are a great option for many events, from weddings and birthdays to dances and sale! For more information about the Venue please check out our website www.thevenueholt.com.

Pass Wide and Slow Awareness Campaign 2021
178 groups of horses and riders, including a group from Briston near Holt, took part in a nationwide Pass Wide and Slow Awareness Campaign this weekend. Danita Zappia who organised the local ride said we have taken part in this event to make drivers aware of the need to pass horses wide and slow, whether they are being ridden or in a cart. Although most drivers already do this, some may not be aware, and this of course is in the Highway Code, so our aim is to highlight the problem horse riders have. Most horses that are out on the roads are traffic wise, but horses can be unpredictable, and it could just take a dog or child running towards the horses behind a hedge, or someone starting up a lawn mower, causing the horse to spook into the path of passing traffic. Not only is there the potential injury to horse and rider, but the average horse weighs around half a ton so could cause considerable damage to the vehicle. In the last twelve months 1,037 incidents have been reported to the British Horse Society. 80 horses have died, and 1 person was killed. 81% of incidents occurred because cars passed to closely to horses and 40% because vehicles passed by too quickly. These are of course only the incidents reported so the number is probably much higher. Danita wished to thank all those who took part, the Pavillion for allowing the horses to meet at the Recreation Ground, The Explorers Bar for laying on a BBQ at the end, SJR Photography for the amazing photos and all the people who came out to wave them off, as well as all the patient drivers who were held up on their way. The national campaign is an annual event, and it is hoped that next year more groups from Norfolk will participate.

EAAA Bless and Open Norwich Base During Air Ambulance Week
to help us be an even bigger part of the local community which keeps us flying.
On Friday 10 September, East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) celebrated Air Ambulance Week 2021 with a special event in Norwich to mark the official opening of the charity’s newly extended and renovated 24/7 operational base and headquarters at Norwich Airport. During the event, the base, which is called Helimed House, was also blessed as part of a multi-faith ceremony to wish the air ambulance crews and patients the utmost safety.
22 key figures representing the lifeblood of the charity, including former patients, donors, crew, a staff member and a volunteer, cut a yellow ribbon to officially open the base, which was completed earlier this year.
Building the state-of-the-art facility has been a long-term organisational goal, enabling the charity to operate a 24/7 service by air and road for the first time. The new headquarters will help future-proof the organisation, bring more teams under one roof and provide adequate rest and welfare facilities for the Anglia One crew. The new base also includes an immersive training suite for the clinical teams.
“Developing the base was an enormous project and long-term goal of ours and was financed through lots of very generous gifts left to the charity in supporter’s wills over recent years. These gifts have been used to safeguard the future of our operation across Norfolk and East Anglia and we’re incredibly grateful to now have such a world-class facility to call our home in Norfolk.”
One of the significant gifts left to the charity which made the new base possible included the sale of a 1964 Ferrari Nembo Spider, which was also present at the event to mark the special occasion. The Ferrari belonged to the late racing driver and motor enthusiast Richard Allen, who passed away in 2016. The sale of the car at auction generated over £500,000 which was used to purchase the land for the building. Members of the Allen family were present at the base opening to see the impact of this gesture during what was also National Remember a Charity Week; a week dedicated to promoting and celebrating the impact that gifts in wills can have for charities.
Matthew Jones, CEO of EAAA, said: “It was wonderful to be able to officially open and celebrate the new base with so many of the people who have made this incredible facility possible. This building provides everything we need for our crews to do their jobs to the best of their ability and will do so for many, many years to come. We’re also very proud to now have a community hub and our own training and conference facilities here,

A Friend Indeed
was put in touch with Peter (not his real name) who lived locally and who had experienced a close family bereavement the previous year. He had no local relatives other than a sister some 30 miles away.”
We are always looking for volunteers at Age Concern North Norfolk (based in Sheringham) and you might like to become one of our befrienders for older people. Amanda, one of our befrienders, writes:
“Yes, we do talk about the weather, but gradually we talked about other things. I always delight when Peter talks unprompted about his childhood, what led to his move to Norfolk, of times gone by, as well as plans for the coming week.”
“Growing up I’ve always enjoyed the company of older people and so I asked Age Concern North Norfolk at the beginning of the pandemic if any of their clients might welcome the occasional phone call. The following week I
“Having never met in person, we have developed a lovely friendship over the past 18 months, speaking every Saturday for a hearty conversation never less than 40 minutes.”
Chocks Away!
New Farm Aviation Heritage Group Museum at Frettenham is now opening on Sundays twice monthly through until December from 10am to 4pm and entry is free of charge. A lot of work was undertaken throughout the lockdown months, the layout has been altered, the displays extended, and we now have a tea room serving a selection of cakes, sausage rolls, ice creams, and hot and cold drinks. There is also a sales section stocking books, jigsaw puzzles, model cars, parts from B24 planes and 50 calibre inert ammunition. There is an especially large selection of aviation books, military, WWII, a few WWI, but also some novels, gardening and cookery books.
The museum probably has the largest display of B24 parts in the UK. We have an entire room dedicated to these aircraft, all recovered from Rackheath WWII American Airbase. The Group is always interested in meeting new people and learning what they know about local air crashes, crash sites, and military history.
Trevor, the museum owner, is very knowledgeable and is available for bookings to give to talks to interested groups. The Open Days for 2021: 10th October 24th October 14th November 28th November 12th December In addition, on Saturday October 16th, we have a stall at Sprowston Garden Centre. There is much to see and you are very welcome to join us. NFAHG 10, Buxton Road, Frettenham, Norwich, NR12 7NG

Leaving a letter of wishes alongside your will by Laura Weston, Chartered Legal Executive, Hayes+ Storr.
Making a will is an important part of lifetime legal planning, but where should you set out your wishes for small sentimental gifts or for funeral arrangements? How will you explain the decisions you made in your will? These are some of the questions we are asked when people want to make a will for the first time or wish to make provision for something out of the ordinary.
For your will to be legally binding, it must be worded using specific legal terminology which does not leave much scope for creativity or explanations.
Alongside your will, you can write a letter of wishes in which you can express yourself in a more personal way. While such a letter is not legally binding, it does place a strong moral obligation for those involved in your will to follow your guidance.
Uses for a letter of wishes
Gifts
One of the most common ways a letter of wishes is used is to leave small items, such as personal belongings, to certain beneficiaries without having to include specific gifts in your will. Provided your will references the separate letter of wishes, this is a perfectly acceptable and even a common way of leaving such items.
Your chosen beneficiaries will not be legally entitled to the items, but your executors should ensure that they receive them unless there is a very good reason why your wishes cannot be honoured.
Funeral wishes
Another popular use for a letter of wishes is to outline funeral wishes. A letter of wishes relating to your funeral can include preferences as to cremation or burial, instructions for your funeral service, or even who should be notified of your death and how they should be notified.
Explanations
As well as offering the opportunity to express your wishes in relation to certain circumstances or specific gifts, a letter of wishes can also be used to explain why you have chosen to structure your will in the way you have.
For example, if you have left a greater share of your estate to one of your children or a charity, a letter of wishes can enable you to explain the decision more fully which may prevent or reduce discord between the family after your death. It will also provide evidence of your views should a claim be made against your estate.
A letter of wishes can be changed as often as needed, without you having to review your will each time, saving you time and money.
How we can help
A letter of wishes is a useful aid in ensuring that your voice can continue to be heard after you have died, however it is important to remember that it will not be legally binding, and it is equally important to understand when a letter of wishes is and is not appropriate.

LOCAL FOOD BANK COLLECTION: A collection point for donations of non-perishable food goods is now available in the Parish Church. Open every day.
Dear friends, Our Harvest Thanksgiving on Sunday 10th October sees the launch of Eco-Church. What is Eco-Church you may well ask! Simply put, Eco-church is an award scheme for churches who want to improve their environmental impact in order to demonstrate that they care for God’s earth. Together with a growing number of parishes in the deanery we have registered on the scheme and are working towards a bronze award. At a time when we all need to examine our lifestyles and the effect we are having on the environment, the Church seeks to review how we manage our church buildings, our land, and how we engage with the local community as well as global environmental issues. No-one can deny the climate is changing, the consequences of which have a huge detrimental affect on the natural world and affects us all. In reality our current lifestyles are not sustainable and we are all challenged to conserve the worlds resources, find alternative environmentally friendly sources of energy, protect the environment, care for others and for wildlife and to live differently and perhaps simpler. This is something the Church has recognised for some time and defines its 5th mark of mission as “to strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth.” As christians we believe the world in which we live is a gift from God and as such we are called to care for and look after that gift as best, we can. Governments and leaders around the world talk seriously abou the need for change, but their words need to lead to a commitment to act. We are running out of time and the time to act is now. We surely need to act together aswell as individuals in order to make a difference and leave a world that is fit for future generations to enjoy and live in. We can all make a difference, and even if you feel what you can do personally is a drop in the ocean, then remember, the ocean is made up of droplets! Kindest regards, Fr. Howard OPEN THE CHURCH to God’s Creation Tuesday 26th October 2pm – 4pm. A free children’s activity workshop which explores and give thanks for the natural world around us. Overhanging greenery
Hempstead Road
Dear Jo, Can I ask that anybody about to plant hedging at this time to consider who this might affect? Unfortunately, shrubs tend to grow, not only upwards, but both sides as well. This means not only the top and your side needing a trim, but the one not visible which faces your neighbour, it is not their responsibility to cut unwanted greenery overhanging their garden and having to dispose of cuttings. There is also the encroaching foliage on public walkways that makes it difficult to walk on pavements and one must step into the road, making it unsafe. So please be responsible and do not cause a nuisance to others. Mrs. D. Gibson
Dear Jo, I am writing in support of the observations made about the complete waste of taxpayer money spent on the supposed lorry ban and width restriction on Hempstead Road. Lorries continue to use and abuse Hempstead Road with unchallenged impunity and the width restriction slows nothing at an appropriate place to make the Road quieter or safer. The parking on the blind bend now Sponge has relocated has not improved and the dangers remain. Traffic uses the pavement to avoid collisions and frankly nobody is listening to the warnings of serious accident. I hope that nothing does happen but all of those involved in ignoring the problems are culpable if one happens. Name and address supplied.
Ref: “The Pilgrim schools not closing!” John Burrows, Chair of Governors, The Pilgrim Federation Dear Jo, I apologise to John Burrows, staff and Governors of the Pilgrim Foundation for any shock and disappointment they may have after reading my summary. I hope this explanation will give a better understanding of my comment The re-assurances given by Cllr Fisher, NCC and Cabinet will last only until the new school is ready - it was consciously built with the capacity to serve the whole District including the catchments of Pilgrim Federation schools The future survival of the Pilgrim Federation will then depend on the small school strategy presented by Cllr Fisher and adopted by Cabinet over one and a half years ago Cllr Fisher reported to Cabinet that support for “small schools” would only be given if they are “sustainable” according to a set of criteria. To illustrate this, he presented a detailed assessment of the present weakness of small schools in Norfolk - KS2 results, high-cost support interventions, numeracy, literacy, staff, leadership… summarising that “The percentage of pupils achieving expected standards is lowest in the smallest schools in all subjects” He further stated that “some small schools have less than 105 pupils on roll and little opportunity to grow” and concluded that “sustainability issues of very small schools particularly those with one or two classes may not be mitigated by joining larger school groups” The strategy emphasised that: “Our plan also seeks to address our core duty of promoting high standards of education”, and to achieve this “we will… either grow or decrease the number of school places for any given local area…and as a last resort, to close schools” Cabinet subsequently directed Officers to conduct a “Formal Review” into “those areas likely to be affected”, which included “-Norfolk coastal villages - rural schools surrounding either a larger village or town - some small rural Norfolk Villages” “This will enable a formal recommendation to be made to Governing Boards on which they will be recommended to base their strategic future plans.” If the Pilgrim Foundation schools don’t match Cllr Fisher’s criteria, then they are at severe risk. I hope that this explanation will now give staff parents and Governors a better understanding of the situation than the limited and superficial responses provided by Cllr Fisher, Cabinet and NCC to “correct the impression that may have been given” and “NCC confirming that Mr Carter’s impression of the facts are not as stated” Richard Carter
Dear Jo, F Woodhouse's recent letter about sending gifts abroad is a timely warning with Christmas (and last posting date for surface mail) fast approaching. Because of Brexit, sending to the EEA (including EU) is now the same as sending to other countries around the world. Importing into the UK is also more complex that it used to be. You may find it easier and more reliable to order gifts from a website that can ship directly to the recipient with Duty/VAT pre-paid or can ship from stock held in the destination country/EU to avoid importing. Sending goods abroad is complex and you need to do your research online. It is essential to correctly fill out and attach form CN22 (lower value gifts), this form is available free from post offices who can help you to fill in the form correctly. If the item is a gift (under €45 for EEA) then Duty/VAT should not be charged; write "Gift" on the CN22 form. Some items can't be treated as gifts and will be assessed for duty, details online. Some countries (e.g., Belgium) will stop "Gift" parcels and require recipient to declare the parcel as a gift but should then release the parcel without charging. The rules for importing goods into the UK have also changed. Gifts valued less than £39 should pass without delay or payment (there are exceptions). VAT and fees will be assessed for other items; some retailers and websites like eBay & Amazon will charge you the VAT and this to Border Force in advance, and provide paperwork with the goods to avoid delays and the £8 handling fee assessed by Parcelforce along with the VAT. Dear Jo,
An Appeal for Drivers
Holt Area Caring Society is a charity which provides door-to-door transport to medical appointments. It is a much-appreciated service for people in this rural area. But we desperately need a few more drivers! So, please, if you would like to become a volunteer driver for us, you would be extremely welcome. We have insurance and drivers are reimbursed for fuel and car up-keep. Drivers can choose whether they do longer trips (eg Norwich) or shorter (eg Holt Medical Practice). Our current drivers really enjoy giving a service to local people, who value it greatly. Please ring 01263 711243 to speak to our co-ordinators Liz or Rachel, and we hope to hear from you. Thank you, Peta Benson (chair HACS) The Holt Chronicle October 2021
Thank You
Dear Jo, Please may we, through your column, give our sincere thanks to all those who attended the service of thanksgiving for the life of Russell Carter. Dear Jo, My wife and I would like to publicly thank our MP Mr. Duncan Baker for his prompt and very timely intervention in the matter of my wife’s residence visa. Using a very well-known immigration agent for a long and arduous one and a half years, struggling to obtain a residency visa for my wife to stay in the UK. Mr. Duncan Baker stepped in and offered us his help writing a letter directly to the Home Office; it was at this point the home office reassessed the case and withdrew their objection. Many thanks Duncan. Mr. M R Mulliner

Old Fashioned Parkin I remember being given this cake as a child on bonfire night along with those teeth-cracking toffee apples.
Parkin originated in the North of England. Made with oats, traditionally it is baked after the oat harvest in early November and so became associated with bonfire night.
Both Yorkshire and Lancashire claim it as their own, but whatever the roots of this cake, it strikes the right note for a spicy, warming treat at this time of year. Make it well ahead of the time you want it as the cake improves in both taste and texture up to a week after it is made.
Ingredients 175g black treacle 150g butter 100g dark muscovado sugar 175g plain flour 2 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp grated nutmeg 275g porridge oats 1 large egg 150ml milk 1 tsp bicarb of soda
Method Preheat your oven to 180c. grease and line a square 18cm (7”) deep cake tin.
Put the treacle, butter and sugar in a saucepan over a low heat and melt together until everything has dissolved, stirring constantly. Set aside to cool.
Meanwhile, sift the flour and spices into a large mixing bowl, add the oats. In another bowl, whisk up the egg and milk and add the bicarb of soda.
Now add this to the dry ingredients along with the treacle mixture and mix well.
Pour the mixture into your prepared tin and bake in the middle of the oven for about an
hour, until firm to the touch.
Leave to cool in the tin for 15 minutes, then turn out, remove the baking paper and leave on the rack to cool completely.
When cool, wrap in parchment paper and store in an airtight tin for up to a week before cutting into squares. Jo – editor.
What a Champ!
These little puffy morsels are scrumptious and so moreish you need to make a decent sized batch as they will be coming back for more. What’s also great is that they are super economical to make too and are a fabulous way to use up leftover mash. Even confirmed carnivores will be chomping on these.
I’m always on the lookout for new recipes and ways to tweak existing ones, and in the quest to feed vegetarians with delicious buffet food have hit upon a winner. I personally can’t pass by a plate of sausage rolls without diving in but was keen to try and come up with a vegetarian alternative that is just as tempting.
I find that generally the cheese and onion equivalent is dry and lacking in substance, so have used a delicious savoury cheesy mash potato filling to stuff the rolls with, resulting in what is essentially Irish champ in pastry!
Champ Rolls Medium pan of Potatoes (use old potatoes suitable for mashing) Small pack garlic and herb soft cheese A little milk for mashing Bunch spring onions, finely chopped Strong cheddar cheese 2 packs ready rolled puff pastry I egg mixed with a little milk
Boil the potatoes until soft, then drain and leave with the lid off to dry a little.
Gently fry the spring onions for about 5 mins with a little olive oil then set aside.
Whilst the potatoes are still hot, mash with a
little milk and the garlic and herb cheese until smooth and creamy (don’t use too much milk, you want a good firm mash).
Add in the cooked onions and season the mash well then add a couple of good handfuls of grated strong cheddar cheese and stir in. Set aside to cool.
Once cool enough to handle place small spoons of mash in a sausage shape along a long piece of rolled out clingfilm and wrap up into a long sausage, pinching the ends.
Place in fridge to harden up for at least a couple of hours.
Keep the pastry on the greaseproof paper that it comes wrapped in and open out. Cut in half lengthways and use the egg mixture to wet one long side.
Unwrap the potato filling and place in the middle of the pastry and roll over to cover the filling, pressing down the wet edge to seal the filling in.
To book call 01263 512412
Cut into the size of roll you want, gently press a fork into the top of each roll and brush a little egg mixture over the tops.
Keep on the greaseproof paper, and place this onto a baking sheet. Repeat with the rest of the pastry and place into a preheated oven on 180° for approx. 15 mins.
Serve immediately.

Three Horseshoes Transformed
High Kelling Garden Club
The Three Horseshoes in Briston has been through a transformation over the past couple of years. Not only are there five newly refurbished comfortable bedrooms, but the kitchen has built a reputation for some delicious pub grub!
On Monday 13th September, 26 members of the club met at High Kelling Village Hall, for the first time since February 2020, to hear Ian Bedford talk about the economic and environmental value of wasps.
Brian and Nicky Brooks have recently taken over as Managers and the improvements continue to flow. In particular there is a new attention to detail - the welcome and service are often commented upon as being exceptional. Having extensive previous experience, Brian and Nicky know what they are doing, and they have attracted a great team of staff too. There is a carefully selected wine list with a good choice of wines by the glass, and Nicky and Brian hope that you will be tempted to try something a bit different at a reasonable price.
Guests who know The Three Horseshoes recognise the work that has gone into creating an attractive garden for outdoor dining when the weather permits. Now in its third year, the garden is maturing and plants fill the borders. Brian and Nicky have plans to develop The Three Horseshoes reputation, seeking to have a more frequently changing menu, and offering takeaways. If you are thinking about a party or celebration this Christmas, why not give The Three Horseshoes a try? There are 200,000 known species of wasp, 9,000 of which occur in Britain. Very few are harmful to humans. Most are tiny and live solitary lives, catching other insects to bring back to a small nest or hole, which is sealed after the female has laid her eggs alongside the paralysed prey. When the eggs hatch, the wasp larvae feed on the prey until they emerge as adults. Some lay their eggs inside a seized insect by piercing it with a long ovipositor, the hatching larvae then eating the poor prey alive.
Although adult wasps are predators, they only eat sugars, e.g., nectar, themselves so are good pollinators. They also rid us of many insect pests. We are more familiar with the social wasps, which each have a specific role in the colony and are intelligent learners. The queen overwinters in a sheltered place and starts building a small nest of chewed wood in March, into which she lays the first of many eggs. These will develop into female workers, who will only live for 2-3 weeks but are responsible for catching prey to feed the larvae, extending, cleaning (they eat the larvae’s sugary excrement) and defending the nest. In the autumn, the queen will lay infertile eggs which turn into males, and these will mate with females to form new queens. The colony then dies and will not use the nest again. The last of the workers then have to look for sugar elsewhere.
When alarmed, a wasp will emit a pheromone that attracts other wasps, so jam traps etc. are ineffective. Better to hang up an artificial wasp nest (or inflated paper bag), as wasps are very territorial so they will be afraid of approaching it.

In the last year with the NHS backlog, more people than ever have been trying acupuncture for pain relief. Fortunately, there are some excellent tried and tested treatments.
Many people are aware of trigger point therapy widely used also by physios and osteopaths. The trigger points are related by a tendon to the painful site and can relieve pain. Similar to this is near/distant treatment from way back in acupuncture history, using a local tender point (ah shi) and a special release point usually on the calf or forearm. This release or junction point would be on the muscle group that serves the painful area. These methods are very good for some, a bit so-so for others who are not as responsive to acu needling.

Best I find, is the treatment known as 6 divisions, where we use two related junction points and a point on the fingers or toes. In Israeli hospital trials this was 80% effective, so good they now use it in the A&E. This has revolutionised pain treatment for me as many people actually feel an improvement in their pain or almost immediately and yet the painful area has not been physically disturbed.

Now cupping is thoroughly based on physical disturbance. Originally a Chinese home medicine and part of Greek medicine, it has morphed into a popular sports medicine, clearly visible in the rings of bruising on Olympic competitors. So, cupping uses a partial vacuum to clear stagnation of blood in an area of pain, allowing waste lactic acid, which is burning the muscle tissue, to be cycled away for processing. I think it's underestimated even in Chinese medicine, as relief is so fast, but one does have to have good skin to have it.

Holt Men’s Shed - Next Steps
Following unavoidable delays due to the pandemic, plans for setting up a Men’s Shed in Holt are finally taking shape. We now have the full and ongoing support of Duncan Baker, MP for North Norfolk, who is passionate about seeing this project through to completion and putting Holt on the map. We are very lucky to already have a venue to host the ‘Shed’ thanks to Independence Matters on Charles Road and now just need to engage fully with potential members in order to finalise things prior to the launch. Men’s Shed are community spaces for like-minded men to connect. Utilising members’ existing skill sets and creating new ones, the Shed is a ‘hands on’ community space that is not only building practical opportunities but also providing valuable social connections. “Shedders” get involved in community projects such as restoring village features, helping maintain parks and making things for schools, libraries and individuals in need. Activities in Sheds are diverse, but usually consist of carpentry, metalworking, restoration projects, electronics, modelling or car building. There will be a Guided Tour of a new Holt Men Shed and the Gardens on Thursday 7th October at 10.30am. This is currently planned to be socially distanced and held outside near the new venue for the Shed Independence Matters, Community Hub, Charles Road, Holt. Starting on Thursday, there will be weekly meetings to develop and organise the launch of Holt Men's Shed at the venue. It will start at 10.30am to 11.30am. Please come along and we need your involvement. To register interest in attending this next exciting development event of the Holt Men’s Shed please contact Stephen Hurley on telephone/text: 07748 335041 or email: stephen.hurley@norfolk.gov.uk.

Keeping your pet smiling!
Prevention is always better than cure and our team of qualified veterinary nurses are happy to provide our clients with free of charge dental appointments to show you how to provide the best dental care for your pet. If you are concerned about your pets dental health, or want to get your puppy or kitten started on the right track with oral health, or just want to discuss our specialised dental treatments including our state-of-the-art dental x-ray, please contact our team on 01692 407126.
We all know dental check ups are essential for our children and ourselves but what about our pets? Dental disease can affect all species and is regularly seen in cats and dogs over 3 years old.
Initially invisible plaque causes gum reddening (gingivitis) which progresses to mineralised brown tartar (calculus) that frequently requires dental scaling. Caught early gingivitis can be reversed, however, over time it progresses to periodontitis with tooth loss and infections of the tooth, gum and jaw bone, with a risk of infection spreading to other organs via the bloodstream.
Dental disease in cats poses particular challenges as they also suffer from chronic gingivostomatitis, a disease where inflammation spreads from the gums to the rest of the mouth. In this condition the body mounts an over-exaggerated immune response to tartar and plaque causing painful inflammation. Treatment is complex and may involve tooth removal, antibiotics and immunosuppression, and should be discussed with your vet.
When detected early dental disease can often be treated with brushing, however, as disease progresses treatment requires antibiotics, scale and polishing and even extractions. Not all dental treatments are the same and dental treatment should involve a thorough examination under general anaesthesia where every tooth is examined visually and with a special probe. Dental X-rays should be performed to assess the extent of disease below the gum line in the root / socket area as this is invisible to the naked eye. These investigations determine the extent of disease and ideal treatment options. At Toll Barn we have a fully equipped dental suite including dental x-ray and our in-house vets have a particular interest in dentistry and are always happy to discuss treatment and prevention options for your pet.
After
Before
Similarly, Feline Resorptive Lesions affect large numbers of cats. These lesions erode the area between the tooth crown (above gum) and root (below gum) causing teeth to fracture. Advanced lesions can be detected by visual inspection, however, early lesions are very painful but only detected by specialised dental x-ray and therefore dental x-rays are always recommended.

My Norfolk, My Holt
‘For someone who never set out to be an MP, I am immensely proud and lucky to represent North ‘Norfolk.’
with Duncan Baker, The Venue Holt Community & Arts Centre Saturday 16th October at 4.00pm Free but donations welcome. Tea and coffee available. Booking Essential Tel: 01263 713427 info@TheVenueHolt.com
My Norfolk, My Holt (MN, MH), formerly hosted by Holt Library, is now kindly being hosted by the Venue (with the libraries blessing), not least so as to be able to accommodate larger numbers, but also so that those attending can happily socially distance in the larger space. MN, MH will take place bi-monthly, as part of a regular programme of Wednesday evening events.
Duncan was born on the 15th of November 1979 in the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. He grew up at Lodge Cottage on the bend of the Norwich Road, and spent a great deal of time in Holt Country Park, as a lad, fishing the pond – able to get from home to the entrance in 58 seconds! He lived in Holt until he was 14, when the family moved to Church Farm in West Beckham. He attended Holt Primary School followed by Gresham’s. Michael Baker (Duncan’s step father) brought him up from a toddler and Duncan grew up around the shop floor of Bakers and Larners for much of his childhood. His first job was sweeping the floors for 50p an hour!
Michael and his mother separated around the time Duncan was at University (Nottingham Trent 1998 – 2002). Duncan went on to become a Chartered Accountant in 2005, meeting his wife Nina at Baker Tilly, an international accountancy practice in the Close in Norwich.
He joined the CT Baker Group in 2008, as the Finance and Business Development Manager, being made Finance Director in 2012. He left on his victory in the 2019 General Election.
Michael passed away just five months before Duncan was elected, and never got to witness the success he had inspired and been so supportive of. ‘I am very proud to have played my part in the town for over a decade. In many ways, the lessons ‘I have learnt from my local councillor roles, have stood me in good stead for becoming the MP. ‘The whirlwind of a General Election and leaving Holt to take up my seat in Parliament has been a ‘huge life change. Not to mention living through a pandemic in my first term’.
These interviews are about valuing the contributions of individuals, of all sorts and in all sorts of ways, to the life of the community, past and present, their memories, their experiences, and their perspectives.

The format of interviews is very informal with different local people, talking about their memories of the place where they were perhaps born or have lived and worked for much or part of their lives. Participants talk about the Holt and Norfolk they know and love, past and present; how it was when they first knew it, and how it is now, both from a personal and a professional point of view. The latest event follows on from the very successful series held at Holt Library, which were recorded and, many of Retur n i n g by which, are available on the popular request library website. We hope to record, and make available, this and future Jenny’s Accordionists events on The Venue A small group of musicians playing a selection from website. Classical, Swing & Film Music

First patient treated in North Norfolk Macmillan Centre
winter’s lockdown. Funding for the centre has been provided jointly by Macmillan Cancer Support, the Norfolk & Norwich Hospitals Charity, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Cromer Community and Hospital Friends. Jane’s visit came ahead of Macmillan Cancer Support’s annual Coffee Morning on 24th September, which remains a crucial source of donations for services and projects funded by the charity. It has seen sign-ups drop more than three quarters below average for the second year running and is encouraging the public to host an event whenever and however suits them.
The first patient to receive her cancer care at the new North Norfolk Macmillan Centre has told of a ‘wonderful environment for patients and staff’ that is closer to home and less crowded than the hospital she normally visits. Jane Ducker, 65, from Aylsham, was the first patient to walk through the doors of the state-of-the-art cancer centre, where services including a Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre and an Acute Oncology Service are opening gradually from this week.
Find out more about Macmillan’s Coffee Morning here: macmillan.org.uk/coffee.
She was coming in for the immunotherapy treatment she receives every three weeks as part of a long-term cancer management plan for renal cancer, taking her place in a treatment chair that, like all the furniture in the centre, had been tested for comfort by a group of patients and clinical staff.
The North Norfolk Macmillan Cancer Support Centre is well on the way to taking shape, but once it’s finished, and supporting thousands of local people living with cancer, it will be so much more than bricks and mortar. We want the local community to have a hand in shaping the support services and activities on offer. Let us know what you’d like to see offered in the Centre, by scanning the QR code or by using the link on your computer and filling in this short survey https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/ CromerHospitalMacmillanCancerSupportCentre/
With five providing space to administer lifesaving cancer medication for up to 30 patients a day, plus a chair for the Acute Oncology Service which supports patients with cancer who have complications or symptoms related to their cancer or its treatment. This new facility means the days of lengthy round trips to Norwich are now behind Jane, and many like her. Those in need of investigations, check-ups and minor operations are also now able to access the care they need closer to home, as three new clinic rooms and two minor procedure rooms make it possible to offer an additional 10,000 outpatient appointments annually.
Jane said: “The new unit is light and bright - what a wonderful environment for patients and staff. From the window, we can even see the birds and squirrels playing in the garden.
“I’ve been treated regularly for about four years and was able to transfer from Norwich to Cromer last year for my immunotherapy where I received treatment in the main Cromer building and now in this new centre. The Weybourne Unit at the N&N Hospital is marvellous but the whole Norwich site is so much busier and more difficult to get to from my home. “I like being with other patients when I have my treatment as you can laugh with people and help the treatment along. Some might expect a cancer unit to be a sad place, but sharing experiences makes a difference and the treatment is less scary as a result.”

ONLY VERY BRAINY PEOPLE SHOULD READ THIS ….
Right, now we’ve got your attention, you really must not miss the next Brain of Briston Audio Visual Quiz - it’s on Saturday October 30th, at the Copeman Centre, Briston, and it’s where all the intriguing picture and sounds questions come at you thick and fast from the big screen. Some are easy, some are hard, some are diabolical, but all are great fun for all the family! It all kicks off at 7pm, and teams of four are ideal, but we can help you make up the numbers with other super brainy people if needed!
Kelling Probus Club held its September meeting at The Dales Hotel Upper Sheringham on Thursday 15th of September.
Welcoming 20 members and guests, chairman Gary Mitchell greeted everyone and said how pleased he was to see so many members, he went on to say we all hoped that this second lunch meeting since end of lockdown would be followed by many more. After a delicious lunch Gary welcomed our speaker Tony Leech of Holt who is the local fungi expert. Tony talked about local fungi and mushrooms as well as those in the wider world. He firstly told us that we should ignore all the traditional ideas of whether a fungus was edible or not, he said ideas included...Smell, animals eat them, and staining a silver spoon. His advice was erring on the cautious, he gave examples of recent poisonings where people just thought they were edible and suffered as a consequence. Tony then talked about mushrooms that were edible, and grew locally, then he covered some famous fungi such as Death Cap, and of course Magic mushrooms which no one by law is allowed to possess in UK. Tony answered several questions and was thanked for an enjoyable talk by David Coslett. We meet for lunch and a speaker every third Thursday in each month, anyone who is retired who would like to come along should contact John Whittington on 01263 820333.
Tickets are £6 a head, and this includes supper too, as well as tea and coffee - and if you want to bring your own tipples, we can supply glasses. There will be a super raffle as well, and prizes for the brightest team, and also for the dimwit team. Tickets are available now by ‘phoning 01263 860844, and you are welcome to pay by credit or debit card. We have tried and tested Covid safety measures in place as well, so come and have a fun-packed but safe night - and all the proceeds will benefit the Copeman Centre’s own improvement fund. So, question number one; will you be joining us? Answer - of course you will!

WEA Wells Branch - up and running!
Looking Back and Moving Forward:
Mary Alexander and Steve Benson in Conversation. Now we are able to meet together the first Holt Society event for this autumn is on October 29th at The Venue, The Community Centre, Holt. This illustrated discussion will focus on events, people and ideas and provide reflection for Holt Society members while giving a flavour of the Society’s background to our new ones, as well as an introduction for visitors. Doors open at 6pm - the talk starts at 7pm. The bar will be open during that hour for refreshments. We are adopting a table arrangement for seating. Any current Covid requirements will be in place. Those attending are encouraged to wear masks until seated. Tickets available on the door. Members £4. Visitors £6.For details of membership: www.theholtsociety.org The committee have not been idle during the pandemic, new projects and publications are in development which will form part of our programme for the membership over the next 12 months. After such a long break in our activities the aim is to provide an event or visit each month. Plans are being finalised for visits to buildings both old and new while talks are being scheduled for mornings as well as evenings. The next lectures open to visitors will be announced for February and March 2022.
After what seems like an eternity, we're pleased to say that the Wells branch of WEA is back in business and we're planning a gentle re-start with a day school on Saturday 13th November. “From Stage to Screen” is about adapting plays for the cinema. Starting with Shakespeare’s plays and ranging across the output of some of the 20th century’s greatest dramatists, we will look at a selection of clips and explore how and why movie studios, directors and writers have used theatrical works and musicals as a source for so many films. Our tutor will be Norfolk-based Stephen Poulter who spent 15 years working for the BBC, initially in TV Drama and then as a producer with BBC Films.
Thanks to the generosity of the Maltings Trust the day school will be held in the main auditorium of Wells Maltings. This change to our normal venue has a great many advantages: we will be able to use the building’s state of the art projection and sound systems; there is plenty of space for attendees to socially distance if they wish to; the building has a highly efficient ‘outside air’ ventilation system; there is in-house catering and there are plenty of toilets. It is as Covid secure as any public building can be. That said, although mask wearing is no longer obligatory in the Maltings, we do recommend that masks are worn.
This day school will cost £18 and will run from 9.45am until 4.00pm with a one-hour break for lunch. You can enrol online by going to www.wea.org.uk/eastern and entering ‘Wells-next-the-Sea’ in the ‘town/postcode’ box at the top of the page. This will take you to the Wells courses. Click on the ‘view details’ button next to the 'Page to Screen' course and then click the ‘Enrol online’ link. Alternatively, you can enrol by phoning 0300 303 3464. For help, advice or further details please contact Annie Whitelaw on 07856 792186 or email anniewhitelaw53@icloud.com. And please remember, these courses are open to everyone, you don't have to be a member of WEA or one of our regulars, and anyone claiming benefits can attend for free.
Members Save the date the evening of November 18th for the launch of The Holt Society film: A Stroll Through Georgian Holt.

Weybourne Folk Club Returns
BOOKS PURCHASED
Weybourne Folk Club will be starting again at WEYBOURNE VILLAGE HALL on Sunday 17th October from 3 pm until 6 pm. Everyone is welcome, singers, musicians, poets, dancers etc. in the folk tradition including audience. Join in the choruses or just listen. Prior to Covid we ran every month for 10 years from February 2010 until February 2020, first at the Ship Inn then at the Maltings Hotel. The intention now is to meet on the 3rd Sunday afternoon of each month from 3 pm until 6 pm. There will be a small charge of £1.00 for performers and audience alike to offset the cost of the venue hire. We don’t have a bar, but you may bring your own drinks/snacks etc. if you wish. We are able to offer tea or coffee before 3 pm or during the interval. We have used the Village Hall very successfully in the past for our annual Folk Weekend. The 10th was to have been held in August 2020 which unfortunately had to be cancelled in common with most other festivals. Hopefully, we can now look forward to next year. Should you need any further details or information please contact Tony Baylis on 01263 588781 or e-mail tonyandcarmen@btinternet.com

Choral Society announces first concert in 2 years of COVID “famine”
Bodham & Beckham Village Hall Events
Bodham Craft Club Don’t forget Crafters.. The Bodham Craft Club has begun meeting again in the Village Hall on alternate Wednesdays from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. The next meetings are on 6th and 20th October. The cost is £2.00 per meeting to include refreshments. Bring any crafts that you are interested in and socialise with like-minded people. Come along and see if it’s the sort of thing for you or please contact Helen Bruford on 588122 for more information. The Craft club will not be meeting in November as Bodham & Beckham Village Hall will be undergoing refurbishment.
Bodham and Beckham Village Hall Film Club Wednesday 13th October – 7.00pm: One of the year’s best films “The Father” 2021 (12) starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman. In an Academy Award winning performance, Anthony Hopkins plays the eponymous role of a mischievous and highly independent man who, as he ages, refuses all assistance from his daughter Anne (Olivia Colman). Yet such help has become essential following Anne's decision to move to Paris with her partner. As Anne's father tries to make sense of his changing circumstances, he begins to doubt his loved ones, his own mind and even the fabric of his reality. Review: No words needed; you simply just have to watch this. Very thought provoking.
Wednesday 27th October – 7.00pm: An extraordinary tale of ordinary love “Ordinary Love” 2020 (12) Starring Lesley Manville and Liam Neeson. Joan and Tom have been married for many years. There is an ease to their relationship which only comes from spending a lifetime together and a depth of love which expresses itself through tenderness and humour in equal part. When Joan is unexpectedly diagnosed with breast cancer, the course of her treatment shines a light on their relationship as they are faced with the challenges that lie ahead and the prospect of what might happen if something were to happen to Joan. ORDINARY LOVE is a story about love, survival and the epic questions life throws at each and every one of us. Review: Deep and delicate movie with beautiful spirit, Liam Neeson is perfect for the role as he has that humanity in the eyes. Definitely worth watching.
After a long-enforced break due to the COVID19 pandemic, Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society are delighted to announce their first concert performance in 2 years. This will be a performance of Joseph Haydn’s magnificent oratorio The Creation. The concert will take place in Cromer Parish Church on Saturday 13 November at 7:00 pm. The performance will be conducted by musical director, David Ballard with soloists Rebecca Kaznowski, soprano (Gabriel); Daniel Bartlette, tenor (Uriel) and Dhilan Gnanadurai, bass (Raphael). Philip Adams will accompany on piano / organ. The Creation dates from April 1798. It was inspired by Handel’s Messiah and Israel in Egypt, which Haydn had heard while visiting England. In the 1790s Haydn made two extended concert tours to London. Returning from the second of those trips in 1795, he brought with him a libretto telling the Biblical Creation story as related in John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost. Haydn conducted the oratorio’s premiere at Schwarzenberg Palace in Vienna.
Booking Information: Tickets cost £14 (£16 on the door), under 18’s free from the box office at Sheringham Little Theatre. Telephone 01263 822347 or online at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com For more information about this concert and the choral society please visit www.sheringhamandcromerchoral.org.uk
The Village Hall will be closed from 1st November for 3 weeks for refurbishment.
Wednesday 24th November – 7.00pm: Breath-taking and beautiful “The Dawn Wall” 2018 (12) starring Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson. An unbelievable story of perseverance, free climber Tommy Caldwell and climbing partner Kevin Jorgeson attempt to scale the impossible 3000ft Dawn Wall of El Capitan. Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars. Fantastic feat of human endeavour.

Safe and effective Laser Hair Removal at the Coltishall Clinic.
For many men and women, unwanted hair can be a nightmare. Getting rid of it can be painful. Until now the only options for removing unwanted hair were smelly hair removal creams, sharp razors, stinging wax or painful electrolysis needles. Our advanced approach to beautiful skin provides the ultimate solution. Now, men and women alike will be pleased with the results made possible by our Laser Hair Removal process.
What is the Laser Hair Removal process? Laser Hair Removal uses high-energy lasers to gently remove unwanted hair, putting an end to routine shaving and waxing. Because the laser treats more than one hair at a time, it is possible to treat larger areas such as the back, shoulders, arms, legs and face. Laser treatments leave your skin looking and feeling smoother and silkier. Best of all, Laser Hair Removal treatments are a safe, fast, gentle and effective alternative method for hair removal.
What are the benefits of Laser Hair Removal? • Larger areas may be treated using lasers than with electrolysis, waxing or tweezing. • It combines the speed of shaving with the lasting results. • Laser Hair Removal is effective on almost any area of the body where smoother, younger, hair-free skin is desired. How many treatments will I need? The number of treatments you may require for optimal long-term benefits depends on the area you wish to have treated, the hair density and your hair’s growth cycle. Your hair grows in cycles and many factors influence its growth. Age, ethnicity, weight, hormones, diet, medication and metabolism all play a part in your hair’s location, thickness and resilience. www.holtchronicle.co.uk

provide refreshments but those attending are welcome to bring their own cuppas 😊 Digital health hub – one to one support with accessing your GP services online. Every Monday in November – session between 4 and 7pm – booking essential. Look out for Code Club coming soon too!
The laser slows the growing capacity of follicles in the growth cycle at the time of the treatment. Since some hair follicles may enter their growth cycle after your treatment, multiple treatments may be required to deliver optimal results. Treatment results will vary from patient to patient depending on skin and hair colour. Removing hair does not make it grow back thicker, darker or quicker. The opposite is usually the case. The laser may cause hair to come back slower and thinner. What is unique about Coltishall Clinic? We have several laser devices available so we can choose a laser based on your unique needs. We have many years of experience with more than 24000 successful treatments. You can find out more information at www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call 01603 736487 to book an appointment.

What a Week!
Motor Neuron Disease Association, the chosen charity of the President, Sue Ealden. After the super efforts of Saturday, it was a joy to relax at an internal club event on the following Wednesday – advertised as “Crazy Bowls”. This mirrored crazy golf (as at the seaside) with separate ”fairways” (rinks) each with rope, blocks, cones etc which acted as obstructions that were hit by your bowl at your peril. After the hiatus of Wednesday, it was back to normal bowling on Friday. This time we welcomed the Rugby Police Bowling Club on the first afternoon of their three-day outing to North Norfolk. Prior to 18 ends of triples bowling, we provided the hungry travellers with a buffet lunch, and afterwards served them with tea and cake. Once again, the catering members did us proud. On the green the two clubs were evenly matched, leading to exciting play. But the police eventually came out on top, 109 shots to 100.
“Presidents” abound in the bowling fraternity; most clubs have one, the County organisations each have one and even committees who run competitions may have one. These positions are largely ceremonial and for the traditionalists may often be seen in blazers and ties. But at Holt we have not filled our president’s position for several years, mainly due to a shortage of bowlers with the preferred experience of many, many years’ bowling. One important task of presidents is to hold a “President’s Day”, which includes bowling, food and, most importantly, the collection of money for a chosen charity. And this year it became our turn to host this event for the President of the Cawston Triples League. With 2 or 3 bowling entries from the 10 clubs making up this league we had probably more bowlers on the green than ever before. With bowling in two shifts there were 78 of them in all. Along with their supporters, this gave the club’s catering volunteers a real challenge to which they responded magnificently. And the day produced a total of £400 (to add to £700 previously raised) for the
During this same week the finals of our seven club knock out competitions were held. The champions are now: Carole Ison (ladies’ 2-wood singles); Joy Seago (ladies’ 4-wood singles); Barry Dennis (men’s 2-wood singles); Ian Sparks (men’s 4-wood singles); Beryl Matthews and Joy Seago (open pairs); Joy Seago and Edward Naggs (Over 75’s pairs); Ron Seago, Astrid Weller and Neil Ketley (Australian Pairs). Congratulations to them all.

Row At Blakeney or On The Broads.
Blakeney Rowing Club’s outings from Blakeney Carnser have been frequent and fun throughout the summer months with many new rowers sampling the delights of travelling the local waters in good company. It has been a real pleasure to see club crews rowing the two skiffs – Bluejacket and Hoi Larntan – alongside each other on the way to Blakeney Point. One such occasion was the club picnic on Saturday 18th September when the skiffs, plus a range of accompanying craft, took members to the beach at Pinchen’s Creek. “Crabbers” were able to enjoy a range of food in the evening sunlight and talk about the adventures of the summer season of rowing. It was tremendous to meet up for a social gathering again. To see pictures of this event, plus other expeditions, go to the club website at crablakeney.wordpress.com. On Monday 27th September, Bluejacket was towed from the Blakeney Dinghy Park to take up residence at Cox’s Boatyard near Barton Broad. Members can now enjoy winter rowing from there. As always there will be much demand for places on the weekly range of outings. For those who wish to enjoy rowing at Blakeney for a while longer, Hoi Larntan will still be available for a few more weeks. Blakeney or The Broads? What a great choice of rowing venues! Why not try skiff rowing for yourselves? There is no obligation to compete; you may prefer to be a social rower who enjoys exercise amidst beautiful scenery in like-minded company. Everyone is welcome. You are entitled to three free rows before deciding whether to join the club. Interested? Then contact club captain Humphrey at hborgnis@icloud.com. You can also gain further information on the club website shown above. Follow the club’s activities on Instagram and on Facebook. Come and join members of your local rowing club on the water. Barry Howes.

The grandmaster Paul Keres (1916-1975) needs no introduction to players, but also liked problems and studies and composed quite a few himself, among them No. 295 above. There is a similarity to No. 294 in that one black unit interferes with others on all its moves to parry the threat. Difficulty 2 as the key is rather obvious.

Woman refused 5.00pm finish awarded £185,000 by Employment Tribunal
A mother, who was told that she could not work flexible hours by her employer, has been awarded a £185,000 payout by the Employment Tribunal.
Alice Thompson was a former estate agent and had a successful career for 10 years, prior to falling pregnant in 2018. After returning from maternity leave, she had asked her employer if she could work a four-day week and leave at 5.00pm, rather than 6.00pm, to enable her to pick her daughter up from nursery. Her employer refused her request on the basis that they could not afford for her to work shorter hours.
According to Thompson, her employer did not "seriously consider" her request and would not consider alternative flexible working options, with Thompson stating she was "shut down", "not listened to" and "not considered". She eventually resigned.
Thompson issued proceedings in the
Employment Tribunal and successfully pleaded indirect sex discrimination on the basis that her employer's refusal to consider her flexible working request put her at a particular disadvantage because of her sex.
Thompson was awarded just under £185,000 in respect of loss of earnings, pension contributions, injury to feelings and interest.
Many employees will make flexible working requests after returning from maternity or paternity leave and it is important for employees to know their rights in relation to making flexible working requests and for employers to be aware of their options when considering flexible working requests made by employers.
It is therefore essential for employers and employees to seek independent legal advice at the earliest opportunity to ensure that requests are handled in the correct manner and to minimise the risk of protracted and costly litigation.

Golden Time for Sam
"This was a tough race for two reasons. I had done the 100m only 20 minutes before this race and it’s never easy to use two different energy systems in two very different races." However, after he swam the 100m, Sam had very mixed emotions and although he came sixth, he was, on the other hand, happy for now to record his second-best time ever of 1.00.51 He now wants to go on and break a minute over the distance. "I know that I’m capable of it and I will have another chance when I compete again in October" added Sam. John Holden

Sam was also runner up in the 400m freestyle. scoring 4.50.73 but explained that it was a hard-fought race.
