The Holt Society Talk 7th August 2021
A Note from the Editor
‘Of Patient Bearing’: A History of General Practice over Eight Generations by Stephen Gillam
So, that’s Summer done and dusted and now we are into the ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ or more like scattered showers and a stiff northerly! North Norfolk Railway are to hold their 1940s weekend on the 18th/19th September, although there will be no street entertainment this year, it is good to see a gradual return of this popular event and I’m sure there will be lots of people dressing up and getting into the spirit of things. Holt’s Sunday Markets continue on the first Sunday of the month from September, a must for lovers of street food and leisurely retail therapy seekers. Ideal for early Christmas shopping, (I know, but it is only just over 3 months away). Whatever you are doing, enjoy your September magazine. Keep safe and well.
An audience of 60, including 18 non-members, gathered in the Holt Church Hall to hear a talk by Dr Stephen Gillam on the subject of his latest publication. What makes this fascinating book of particular local interest is the fact that from 1847 his medical forebears served the community from the same attractive Georgian house in Holt where he lives today.
Dr Gillam tells the story of general practice over eight generations of his own family from 1770. Bringing to life the activities of his ancestors to humanise the evolution of medical practice over a period of 250 years is a remarkable achievement in less than 300 pages let alone a talk of under an hour. Yet with gentle authority, brilliant analysis and well-timed flashes of humour, Dr Gillam held and educated his audience.
Jo – Editor.
Here are the deadline dates and publishing dates for the next 3 magazines. Month

The number and range of questions at the end illustrated the great interest he evoked. So much has changed from the days of one-doctor 24/7 surgeries with no work-life balance to the larger practices of today, the digital revolution and the coming of the NHS. Yet Dr Gillam for all his experience in public health, policy research and medical education, appears still to be a GP at heart and pines (just a little) for the days when doctors really knew their patients and were able to exercise that holistic care that brought them into their profession and which current pressures make so hard for his excellent present-day colleagues to emulate.

Amongst the upper echelons of high Victorian society, we were told, there was some way to go for the general practitioner. A certain Lady Warwick asserted in her best Lady Bracknell tones, “One may invite a doctor to a garden party but never, of course, to luncheon or dinner.” Stephen Gillam is welcome round at mine any time. Combating social isolation and loneliness in Breckland and North Norfolk
It’s estimated that of a population of about 900,000 in Norfolk, the number of lonely or socially isolated people stands at 40,000. That’s about 4.5 per-cent. And it’s the impact of being socially isolated on the individual’s physical health and mental wellbeing that is of greatest concern.
Dereham-based charity Community Action Norfolk (CAN) is working with partner charity Future Projects in combating social isolation in the Breckland and North Norfolk districts of the county. The project, known as CANConnect, aims to help people connect with activities, events and other people in or near their locality, as well as providing individuals with one-to-one support in identifying and achieving their personal goals. CANConnect also provides support for the community itself, helping organisations and people make the places where we live stronger, friendlier, and more resilient.
And to do this, the project needs volunteers in supporting and dealing with people’s anxieties and fears about going outside on their own, especially post-pandemic.
“Sometimes we could all do with a little support to help make life ‘click’ and re-discover our confidence” explains CAN’s Chief Executive Officer Rik Martin. “So we are asking anyone in the Breckland and North Norfolk areas, who may be able to offer time to help people on one-to-one basis, to get in touch. With their support individuals can access more of what their community has to offer, helping make the places where we live stronger, friendlier and more resilient.
“Norfolk has a great history of volunteers stepping forward to help, not least during the Covid pandemic, where our Good Neighbour Schemes and mutual aid groups have seen a tremendous response from individuals who have contributed to supporting vulnerable residents in their communities.” The work has been commissioned by Norfolk County Council as part of a range of similar services across the county tackling the problems created by social isolation and loneliness. “We delighted to be playing our part in bringing communities together through the Social Isolation project in partnership with CAN” says Daniel Childerhouse, Chief Executive of Future Projects.
Now more than ever it is important that we connect to those around us and this vital service helps achieve just that. However, to do so we need volunteers to support our activity with those who would otherwise be overlooked. This is a first-class service which offers highly rewarding volunteering opportunities.”
Volunteers benefit by meeting new people, learning new skills and gaining experience in the voluntary sector. And being part of something that directly supports the community can make a real difference to people’s lives. CAN and Future Projects staff know the importance of volunteers being supported and will provide all necessary training. Anyone interested in volunteering can visit www.canconnect.org.uk and or call 01362 545020 to find out more.

News from The Venue
It’s going to be a busy autumn for us, with more improvements to the outside of the Venue going ahead. We have had the driveway re-laid, new advertising cabinets connected and further work to the front in the form of planting and tidying is happening in the next few weeks, prior to the new gates being installed. Sadly, we have been targeted by vandals who have spray painted graffiti on some windows and brickwork, but we remain undaunted and hopefully said gates will prevent any further vandalism, which I understand is happening throughout the town. We have the return of the WI to the centre, which we are so pleased to see back in the Venue, and also the wonderful Little City Norfolk and HartBeeps coming back for our youngest visitors – check out our website for more details on when they meet. Our newest groups to join the family of User-groups are Harmony Yoga and Cookstars, both starting this month, adding yet more variety to the activities that can be enjoyed at the Venue. The popular Art Forum with Phil Barrett will be restarting in October, with dates and details to be confirmed in the next issue. We have an indoor Tabletop Sale on 23rd October, giving us all a chance to have a big clear out and earn a few pounds at the same time – be sure to book your table early, whether you are selling preloved items or craft goods. Holt Community Café will again be providing delicious food and drink throughout the day. Whilst on the subject of food, the wonderful Community Café have joined forces with superb entertainers Jeff and Sue Short to provide a FREE event in celebration of our Senior community, hosted at the Venue, consisting of a slap-up full afternoon tea served on vintage china, accompanied by live 1940s style entertainment on Silver Sunday, 3rd October. This is one not to be missed, but obviously we must cap the numbers so booking is vital to save your space. Just call the Venue on 01263 713427 to reserve your place. You can find more details on the advert in this issue (thank you Eric and Jo for supporting us!) An exciting development is the start of new Live Jazz Nights on the first Wednesday of the month, starting on 6th October. Tickets are only £10, including light refreshment and outstanding live Jazz from 8pm to 11pm. With an authentic bistro atmosphere and quality entertainment, and of course our bar open, it’s a great affordable night out in Holt. As always, all profits go straight to the charity. Don’t forget there are still tickets available for our first Amdram Theatre production on 17th and 18th September, again only £10 a ticket, so as the nights start drawing in, why not treat yourself to an evening out enjoying quality entertainment? We are so pleased to be supporting and hosting Stage Direct after what has been a tricky season for the arts industry. One of our Trustees June Clarke has asked me to include the following for you all to consider: “are you interested in sustainability and recycling where clothes are concerned? Would you like to meet other like-minded people? I tried to get a sewing group together last year, but more lockdowns spoiled that idea, so I would like to try again. If you are keen to prevent the amazingly high percentage of clothes that go to landfill every year, then maybe this group is for you! We would have to sort out a day and time to meet so if you are at all interested, please leave your name and number at the hall or call me on 01263 710779 or 07733 552337 and we will see if we can get a group together in the near future.” It’s a great idea that I really hope takes off, as we could all do with learning new skills and being more responsible with our recycling! Don’t forget the cinema has restarted and we have a wonderful feel-good film Dream Horse, the exciting true story of Dream Alliance, a racehorse bred by a small-town Welsh bartender, played by Academy Award nominee Toni Collette, going on to race in the Welsh Grand National. We are so pleased to offer cinema at the Venue but can only continue of it is supported as it is an expensive service for us to provide, so please do come along. As always, more info on all activities at the Venue can be found at www.thevenue.com or by calling us on 01263 713427. Carolyn Burn, Chairperson.

Bloomin’ Marvellous
Lunch Time at Age Concern
Age Concern North Norfolk is your friendly local Charity offering support for older people, their families and carers, based in Sheringham. Recently we had a visit from “Blooming Blooms” where older folk were encouraged in an afternoon’s activity session to try their hands at flower arranging.
Briston mega quiz
Head Scratching at Briston! There’s no monkey business at the next Briston Sounds and Pictures Quiz - just loads of audio and visual clues varying from dead easy to devilishly devious, but it’s great fun for all ages and abilities, with supper thrown in, prizes for the best and worst teams, and all this for just £6! This is just an advance warning to put the date in your diary now Saturday October 30th, 6.30pm for 7pm. Full details will follow shortly, or you can phone us (EmJay Music) now on 01263 860844 for further details. Full Covid safety rules will apply of course, and the Copeman Centre benefits from the profits raised on the evening. Thanks!
Briston Organ Shows. Live Music is back in Town!
Our last show (first since early last year!) was on Friday August 13th, with Matthew Bason - and the date really lived up to its name with a couple of equipment failures, and a two-hour delay for our artist due to a major road accident - but we survived it all and had a wonderful show once we got the amplification working properly! We have been pleased to get good feedback from our audience, who not only really enjoyed the show, but complimented us on the precautions we took regarding the Covid problem, and saying they felt very safe.
Liz Withington from Dementia Friendly Sheringham commented: ‘The wonderful thing about an independent high street and local businesses is how they are prepared to get involved and support our community. Well done Karen Mallett at Blooming Blooms. I’m sure these ladies’ spirits would have been truly lifted. Also great to see Age Concern North Norfolk up and running and supporting the community again after COVID-19. They are looking for trustees to drive this great service forward if you have the time and interest.’
If you are interested in a home cooked meal, a Meal on Heels dinner or other support, please contact Alison, our Office Manager, on 01263 821188.
TRUSTEES NEEDED (All Ages)
If you are interested in supporting elderly people, do you have 6 hours a month for a year or more, that you could give to a good cause?
Age Concern is expanding its services under new management, and following the pandemic, is looking for new Trustees. You might be a young adult from age 18 wanting to gain experience, someone a little older with time to spare, or a newly retired professional such as a doctor, solicitor, social worker or accountant, with proven experience, wanting to “give something back” to your community. Age Concern North Norfolk is a self-funded charity, based in Sheringham, working for the benefit of older people across central North Norfolk. It supports people aged 50+ (some with dementia) by providing a Day Services Hub, Meals on Heels and other services. You will be joining a team of dedicated people who will offer support and welcome your ideas.
Please contact the Day Centre Office Manager, Alison, for further information and an application form. Telephone: 01263 821188 Email: alisonc@ageconcernnorthnorfolk.co.uk

Case Study: Making a Claim for Personal Injury after an Accident
To highlight the process for making a personal injury claim, we have provided a real-life example where one of our clients was seriously injured in a road traffic accident.
The client (who we have set out below, but which is not her real name) instructed our specialist personal injury team to pursue a personal injury claim to compensate her for the injuries she suffered and to provide financial provision for her long-term care and assistance.
Sarah, who was in her late 80's, was involved in a road traffic accident where the vehicle in which she was a front seat passenger was hit from the rear by another vehicle. Her driver had braked to avoid an oncoming vehicle which travelled the wrong way around a roundabout ('the Oncoming Vehicle'). Sarah suffered a fractured spine and a stroke as result of the accident and required surgery, followed by a lengthy stay in hospital.
When Sarah returned home, she required 24hour care, and assistance with activities such as washing, dressing, cooking, and cleaning. Whilst the NHS were able to provide limited care for the first few weeks, this was a temporary measure. Sarah's family instructed private carers to help her with personal care and her adult son moved into her home to aid with cooking, shopping, travel etc.
Medical evidence concluded Sarah's condition was unlikely to improve and that she would require 'in house' care and assistance for the foreseeable future. Sarah also needed aids and equipment to help her around her home.
Sarah and her family were concerned about the cost of her future care needs as she had insufficient savings to fund the private care fees long term. It was decided that Sarah should pursue a claim against the driver of the Oncoming Vehicle to compensate for her injuries and the financial losses she suffered due to the accident, including for the future cost of care.
Clapham & Collinge offered to act for Sarah under a Conditional Fee Agreement, which is commonly known as a No Win No Fee Agreement, so she did not have to meet her legal costs upfront. This enabled Sarah to focus her finances on paying for her care.
Claimants are entitled to recover compensation for (1) General Damages (compensation for injury, suffering and loss of amenity) and (2) Special Damages (financial loss incurred due to the accident including travel expenses, medication costs, loss of earnings, care costs and aids and equipment.)
We submitted details of Sarah's claim to the insurers of the Oncoming Vehicle. Under the Personal Injury Pre-Action Protocol, the insurers had three months to investigate the accident and confirm in writing whether they accepted that their driver was responsible for the accident.

Our service is modern and comprehensive, whilst drawing on sixty years of experience and legal knowledge to guide and advise our clients with total professionalism.
www.holtchronicle.co.uk
The Defendant argued that, due to her age, Sarah would have likely required substantial care in the near future even if the accident had not occurred and made a reduction to her claim for care. They also argued that Sarah's stroke was unrelated to the accident. These arguments were clear attempts to negotiate a lower settlement figure.
If you have been involved in an accident and suffered an injury in the last 3 years, our dedicated Personal Injury lawyers are on hand to help. To discuss your circumstances in further detail, contact us on 01263 823398, email enquiries@ clapham-collinge.oc.uk or visit www.clapham-collinge.co.uk *This case study is provided for general information purposes only and does not constitute legal advice or other professional advice.
The first Jigsaw Day with lunch available will be on 16th October from 11;00 am to 2;00 pm with refreshments available throughout this time and a two-course lunch available from 12:00 pm to1:00 pm. www.clapham-collinge.co.uk
The experts agreed that Sarah's injuries were caused by the accident and concluded she would need 24/7 care in future. We obtained quotes for the cost of 24/7 private care and included the cost of Sarah's future care as part of her claim.
The Copeman Centre return to fundraising events beginning with a Jigsaw morning on the 18th September from 10;00 am to 12;30 pm. To ease the cooks in gently we are starting with a Coffee & Cake morning, but do come along and exchange your jigsaws or stop for a chat. For more information ring Anne on 01263 861004.

Once liability was admitted, from the driver of the car that hit the car Sarah was in we arranged for Sarah to undergo examinations with two specialist medical experts: a Consultant Spinal Surgeon and a Neurosurgeon, to assess Sarah's injuries and to prepare a report to assist in calculating her financial loss.

We engaged a specialist Barrister for advice and negotiated with the insurers' Solicitors to reach a favourable lump sum settlement which provided Sarah with significant compensation for her injuries and enough money to pay for her future care needs.
In Sarah's case, the insurers for the Oncoming Vehicle blamed the driver of the vehicle which collided with the rear of Sarah's car for the accident. We argued the apportionment of blame between the drivers should not delay
We offer a full range of legal services to businesses and individuals in North Norfolk.
Sarah's claim and successfully persuaded the Oncoming Vehicle's insurers to deal with the claim on a Without Prejudice basis. This meant that the Oncoming Vehicle's insurers paid Sarah compensation and were free to pursue the other insurance company for a contribution later.

New Theatre Project Comes to The Venue
Kelling Probus Club
The Venue Community and Arts Centre in Holt is soon to host a theatre show and hopes to offer theatre to the people of Holt on a regular footing. The centre in Holt has given the venture the thumbs up which will see the acclaimed Stage Direct amateur dramatics group take centre stage for two nights in September.
The long-awaited arrival of Stage Direct amateur drama group’s next exciting production is almost upon us. Featuring a double bill of comedy, comprising two one act comedies performed back-to-back. (But of course, with an interval in-between). Now we are entering post Covid times, we can announce we can bring this feast of comedy to the stage for your entertainment. The first is called “If I Were You” written by Cromer man and amateur dramatics enthusiast David Starling, and the second comedy is called “Dedicated Sorrowers”, a published comedy, written by Sheringham man and Chairperson of Stage Direct amateur drama group, Nigel Manson. The shows will also be produced and directed by the same said duo.
Nigel said “We’ve been waiting in the wings a long time for this opportunity to arise, and are delighted that we have been given this marvellous opening to show the people of Holt what Stage Direct are about” David said, “Like every other drama group, Stage Direct have been eager to be able to tread the boards again to entertain the masses”. As a first, and with the help from The Venue, they have been given full support to go ahead with this project and look forward to welcoming the general public back again to enjoy theatre once more. Although they have not been able to prepare and or perform during the last year and a half, Stage Direct have been kept busy and have managed to keep their acting membership on their toes by exercising their acting talents, albeit via zoom meetings.
Eating together again after 18 months. Kellling Probus Club held their first lunch meeting for 18 months on Thursday 19th August at the Dales Hotel Upper Sheringham. 22 members were welcomed by their Chairman Gary Mitchelll who was so pleased to see the club together again. Members heard tributes to past chairman Andrew Hyatt who died of cancer during lockdown, he had been a very dedicated member and tribute was paid to his intellect and knowledge which had entertained members on many occasions. The ceremony of handing over the gavel and chain to Gary was performed and members sat down to a tasty lunch. A speaker had not been booked as the Covid lockdown meant that many issues concerning the club needed to be addressed. Gary led the discussion by thanking David Coslett and Ken Murray for holding the club together during this time. Regular coffee mornings with groups of six had been held and this had meant that members had been able to see each other despite the ban on big gatherings. Discussion was held on various topics including meals, dress code, insurance, website, finance and various other topics. It was stressed that the club needed new members and it was hoped that members would be able to introduce friends and acquaintances to the club. Our next meeting is at The Dales on Thursday 16th September where a speaker was expected. Stage Direct has recently run a recruiting campaign to encourage new members with multifarious talents to help prop up their membership and for help with the preparations of this new extravaganza. Covid restrictions have given the producers some headaches in so much as being able to rehearse safely etc. but as the producers of the show said, “nothing is insurmountable”. The Group, during lockdown, kept their acting skills in good shape with zoom play readings among their members and were also joined by an acclaimed actor of TV and stage fame just for fun, which was great. The group have now settled down to some serious rehearsals; complete with new and very talented acting recruits in readiness for the performances which will run for two nights at The Venue in Holt on September the 17th and 18th 2021 starting at 7.30pm. Tickets will be available from The Venue, (usually in the mornings prior to these dates) and they will also be available from Hair by Solo at 4A Barford Road Sheringham. Subject to availability, tickets will be sold on the door on performance nights. Tickets cost £10.00. All sales must be cash. The tickets are unnumbered and will be sold on a first come first served unreserved basis.
To reserve tickets please call Nigel at work on 01263 823433 (during the day) or email Nigel on solo.hair@virgin.net The group will move on to their next project almost immediately, which will be a farce called “Miss Marble Takes a Break” which will be performed at The Little Theatre, Sheringham in January 2022 We invite to come along with family and friends and look forward to seeing as many of our regular supporters as possible. Norwich Diocesan Refugee Fund Dear friends, Compared to the unimaginable problems facing the Afghan people we enjoy a quality of life that others can only dream of and we cannot begin to imagine what it is like to be displaced by violence, extreme weather, or natural disaster. I wonder how you view those seeking to enter our country as refugees, asylum seekers or economic migrants? Of course there are no easy answers to the mass migration of people in search of better and safer living conditions but I have no doubt over the coming decades we will see the numbers increase. The situation that has unfolded in Afghanistan has caused well over two million refugees to seek sanctuary in neigbouring countries such as Pakistan and Iran and hundreds of thousands more across Europe and around the world. Currently, the UK has pledged to accept 20,000 refugees over the next five years. So how are we to respond? Hopefully, with compassion. The Mothers Union in the Norwich Diocese is extending its welcome to refugees to include Afghan Refugees who will arrive in the county. They are offering practical help to settle families in homes. Donations ‘For Refugees Resettlement’ by cheque made payable to ‘Mothers’ Union Norwich Diocese’ can be sent to the MU Office, Diocesan House 109 Dereham Road Easton NR9 5ES. Also, the Bishop of Norwich has relaunched the Bishop’s Refugee Fund. Working with the Norfolk County Council the fund enables the Bishop to respond with requests for help for refugees to learn English and understand British Culutre. Donations can be made online on the diocesan website www.dioceseofnorwich.org or cheques made payable to ‘NDBF Ltd’ can be sent to the Bishops Refugee Appeal, 109 Dereham Road, Easton, Norwich, NR9 5ES. Jesus commands us to love our neighbour as ourselves and of course our neighbour is anyone in need. Over these past sixteen months people have shown incredible generosity and help to one another locally, surely its time to extend that same generosity and help to those who needs are much greater than our own. Kindest regards Fr. Howard

Hedgehogs
Dear Jo, I was saddened to read the obituary of Roger Hawkins in the August edition of the Chronicle. I partnered Roger in a game of Croquet fairly recently at Bodham. During a chat I learned that he had been a fast jet Navigator in the RAF during the 50s before leaving to study Holy Orders at Ripon Hall. He then rejoined the RAF as a chaplain/padre and was at RAF St Mawgan in Cornwall in the mid 60s. I then asked his surname and it transpired that he was the officiating chaplain at our wedding in St Mawgan Parish Church in February 1967. What a coincidence for 2 well-travelled officers to meet after over fifty years, and both be residing in Holt! Needless to say, we didn’t recognize each other after so much time had passed. Michael & Christine Curtis
Graffiti in Holt
Dear Jo, I'm sure you may have been approached about this already but just in case I am just bringing to your attention the recent spate of idiotic graffiti that has been popping up a lot around Holt, mainly in the passage leading to the new estate but also there are others further toward town and even some in the county park on some of the carved wooden signage. It's sad to see and I'm sure I speak for many when I say I want it to stop. Its mindless and quite honestly ****** annoying. Regards Holt resident.
Costly Customs
Dear Jo, Being a lady over 70, I love my scarves and most of my European lady friends are like minded. With Covid, I haven’t seen them for the last year, so on special occasions I’ve sent them a scarf, mostly second hand. I was surprised a month ago to send a £4 beauty to Antwerp as a gift. I laughed at the postage for so light an item, it was more than the scarf. 2 weeks later I was notified on WhatsApp still no sign, 3 weeks later my friend said customs wanted 31 Euros to deliver. My reply – ‘please tell them to destroy the item, it’s not worth 31 Euros.’ Beware sending gifts to Europe, especially Belgium! F Woodhouse.
Hempstead Road Pinch Point
Dear Jo, As a resident of Hempstead Road, I am interested to know if any other residents have noticed and are irritated by the supposed traffic calming and weight restrictions for goods vehicles on our road which are completely ignored. I am not aware of the cost of the project constructing the 'Pinch point' and signage but can imagine it was considerable and partly paid by the eye watering amount of council tax we pay. This does not appear to be policed by anyone and is proving to be a complete waste of time and money. Nic Southam email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

Dear Jo, We have at least two hedgehogs visiting our garden and have an automatic feeding station with a mini camera focused on it. We see and hear them visit every night, the camera records at least six or eight visits right throughout the night. We have provided a nest box for them, and they made this lovely cosy bed in there, three weeks ago! The nest box has a detachable cover, so we lifted it off to peep in last week and there was Humphrey? or Henrietta? fast asleep, breathing heavily, almost snoring! We have seen them feeding together but not sure which is which. We hope one of each! It’s difficult to tell. The picture was taken at approx. 2pm. I have planted garden mint close to the nest box, they are said to really like the smell of mint. Anyone wanting to encourage hedgehogs into their garden, I would suggest the special packaged food, available from the pet shop and lots of fresh water. We have noticed they do drink an enormous amount every night. Maureen Seekings of Holt.
The Pilgrim Federation is not closing!
Dear Jo, Staff and governors of The Pilgrim Federation (Blakeney, Hindringham, Kelling & Walsingham Schools) were shocked and disappointed to read the comments made in point 3 of a letter from Richard Carter in the August Holt Chronicle and we wish to correct the impression that may have been given. No communication or consultation of any sort has been entered into by the School’s Governors or Staff with either NCC Cabinet or Gladman Developments. So, as soon as the Chronicle was published in August, I made contact with Duncan Baker (MP) and subsequently Cllr. John Fisher (Cabinet member for Children’s Services) to seek accurate information. I’m very grateful to both Mr. Baker and Cllr. Fisher for their support, which has led to me being sent a response from NCC confirming that Mr. Carter’s impression of the facts are not as stated. I’ve been advised that NCC Cabinet have met and agreed, I quote: “to support a new school building for Holt Primary which would address the need for additional school places as a result of considerable house building in the town both underway or planned.” The response goes on to say: “No discussion has taken place about the impact this may have on small village schools in the wider area, some of which form the Pilgrim Federation.” We formed the Pilgrim Federation in April 2013 in order to secure high quality education for primary age children in the heart of their own communities. That aim hasn’t changed and I’m pleased to confirm that, following the retirement of our first Executive Headteacher, Mr Tom Snowdon has been appointed from 1st September 2021 to take the Federation forward through its next chapters. The future is exciting so I would encourage parents seeking the best for their children, and others within the community, to visit and see what we have to offer. John Burrows Chair of Governors, The Pilgrim Federation. The Holt Chronicle September 2021

I always look forward to Autumn and the comfort of curling up in the warm and enjoying a bowl of homemade soup, and what better than taking advantage of the seasonal bounty of mushrooms. This recipe can be made with ordinary mushrooms, or for extra flavour and depth try to source some different varieties or use some rehydrated porcini mushrooms added to the fresh ones. This freezes well so make double quantity and keep some for a wet and rainy day. Homemade Mushroom Soup
Homemade Mushroom Soup Ingredients
500g/1lb mushrooms 90g/3oz butter 2 medium onions, chopped 1 clove garlic, crushed 2 tablespoons plain flour 1 litre/2 pints Chicken or vegetable stock 1 bay leaf (optional) 120mls/4 fl oz single cream Generous grating of nutmeg Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
Our services include a weekly Poppy Café and fortnightly Poppy PM. Both provide opportunities for support in a safe, friendly and relaxed environment and take place in the Meeting Room at St. Andrew’s Church, Holt, NR25 6BB, where our volunteers will be ready to welcome you.
• Poppy Café is open every Tuesday from 10.30am - 12.30pm • Poppy PM opens on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 2.00 - 3.30pm.
A wide choice of activities is provided for our clients to enjoy, and families and carers have time to share ideas and information over a hot drink and cakes or benefit from some time to themselves. Information is available about local resources and there are visits from health care professionals and other organisations. Poppy Home Visiting is a service which provides respite for family members or carers who look after those with dementia in their own homes. Our volunteers offer company, support and reassurance to the client, enabling carers to take time out. Method
Clean the mushroom with a damp cloth, (never wash mushrooms as they absorb the water diluting the taste), and roughly chop the caps and stems. Chop the onions and garlic finely. Heat the butter in a medium pan add the onions and garlic and cook until soft but not browned, (5-6 minutes). Add the mushrooms and cook over a high heat for 3 minutes, stirring constantly. Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms, mix well. Add the bay leaf, if using, and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove the bay leaf and leave the soup to cool for a few minutes. Place the soup in a blender, (you may need to do this in batches) or use a stick blender and blend until smooth. Add the nutmeg, taste and season. Return the soup to the heat and reheat until it simmers but not boils. Stir in the cream. You could also add a few reserved mushrooms, fried until golden brown, as a garnish. Serve with a chunk of good bread. Serves 4 – a hug in a bowl. Enjoy – Jo, Editor.

Perfect Pastry
From Holt Consulting Rooms John Davis, BSc, Ost Med, Osteopath
I have so many requests for the perfect pastry recipe, and it always amazes me how many people are still terrified of making their own shortcrust pastry. Once you’ve mastered this, all sorts of delicious avenues and possibilities open up, and you’ll never look at a pack or Jusroll again. If you want an everyday, super quick and easy to make pastry, here it is. Throw away all that you may have been told previously about using lard and plain flour, and just follow the instructions below, and you’ll never look back. Definitely buy the dough blender pastry cutter, it makes life so much easier and is not expensive. I use this recipe for both savoury and sweet recipes and have included a quick treacle tart recipe for you to test it out. Just remember, less handling and cold water and bowl gets the job done!
Why sitting too much can cause you problems.
Many of us spend a great deal of time sitting down at work and then come home and sit down in front of the TV or worse the laptop. As an osteopath I am forever encouraging my friends and family who work in a sedentary job to do something to counteract it. Here are some reasons why you should do something about it and some instructions on how you can avoid these problems.
Muscle weakness. When sitting properly, we engage our postural muscles, but if we sit slumped they can weaken over time. The muscles of the back may tighten and cause tension. If you’re craning to look at a screen, keyboard or tablet or holding your phone between neck and shoulder, you may be creating muscle imbalances that can result in neck and shoulder pain.
Super Simple Shortcrust Pastry
(Makes one large quiche or treacle tart, use the leftover cuttings to make awesome jam tarts!) 8 oz Self raising flour 4 oz butter/marg (I use Clover) cut into small pieces Approx 4 tablespoons COLD water
Tight hip muscles. Sitting for long periods can cause the muscles at the front of the thighs and hips to shorten which can reduce the range of motion of the legs when walking. This may cause problems with your gait and can have consequences for the health of the hip joints.
Method
To make pastry: Make sure you use a cold large bowl (preferably metal or pottery) and if you have one, a dough blender pastry cutter (see pic). Place flour into the cold bowl, and add the butter to the flour, and using the cutter in quick movements cut the butter into much smaller pieces. Using light, quick fingertip movements, rub in butter to flour until it resembles crumbs, being careful not to handle too much (just use your fingertips and don’t press). Using your knife, add in 3 tablespoons of very cold water to the mixture, and bring together into a ball, adding another tablespoon if not coming together (if its too sticky just add a little more flour). Handling lightly, press and turn the ball once or twice to fully combine it, and then cover in cling film and leave to rest in the fridge for half an hour to chill. On a floured surface, roll out and use, pricking all over with a fork once in your large flan dish prior to adding filling.
How to fight back. The simplest thing to do is to increase your general levels of activity. Something as simple as going for a walk in the evening can do a lot to undo the stiffness created. If you drive to work, try leaving the car a small distance away. It’ll get you walking and might save you some money on parking.
If you are sat at a workstation for long periods of time, take regular breaks even if it’s just to walk to the water cooler. Remember, motion is lotion.
Sit correctly. Try not to lean forward, keep your neck and shoulders relaxed, and perhaps use a small cushion to support your lower back. The cardinal sin is sitting twisted in the chair to face a screen or keyboard.

Roll out your pastry and line a 9-inch flan dish with it, pricking the base all over with a fork. Place syrup and marmalade into a saucepan and gently heat through, whisking to ensure marmalade mixes evenly. Once warmed and combined, add in lemon juice, and continue for another couple of minutes. Add your breadcrumbs to the warmed mixture and place into your flan dish, evening it out. Place into a preheated oven on 180° for approx. 25- 30 mins, or until mixture has slightly risen and filled out and pastry is golden. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream. Carolyn Burn

Holt WI
At the next meeting on September 15th, we welcome Bridget Pearson who will talk about her life as a vet. New members are very welcome to meetings which are held at the Holt Community Centre (The Venue) the third Wednesday of the month between 2pm and 4pm.
On 18th August Holt WI held it is the first meeting at the Venue since lockdown. About 20 ladies attended including 3 new members which was an excellent indication that life is returning to normal. The President welcomed everyone and the secretary and treasurer. gave information on finances, and activities which were on offer from the Norfolk WI. This month Gill Tullie gave a demonstration on flower arranging. Surrounded by greenery and flowers, Gill, her nimble fingers cutting, trimming and stripping greenery and flowers, produced 4 lovely displays. Each one had a theme; they were the picnic, a country walk, the seaside and a prosecco evening, the last being a flower arrangement emerging from a prosecco bottle! While working on these, Gill chatted and talked and kept us enthralled and entertained. This was followed by tea and biscuits, chatter, and a raffle. The 4 beautiful flower displays were among the raffle prizes and were the first 1to31/01/2020 be chosen. 19:55 This was a lovely afternoon, and the new room End_Layout Page 1 (the lounge) was a perfect setting for the meeting and somehow the meeting was more informal LIGHT GARDEN HELP which was lovely. - Toll Barn Vets -
Here to Help!
Whether it‛s a dog or cat or rabbit, or an exotic reptile, fish or bird, Toll Barn Vets in North Walsham is on hand to help with your pets everyday routine veterinary needs as well as helping you through those stressful medical pet emergencies. Our canine friends enjoy their own waiting area and dedicated ward if they need to stay overnight, and our feline friends also have their own waiting area and dedicated ward including everything you would expect from an Accredited Gold Standard Cat Friendly Practice. Our exotic pets also have their own ward and waiting area complete with vivaria for our reptile species and specialised enclosures for birds. As an Accredited Gold Standard Rabbit Friendly Practice our small mammals also benefit from specially designed enclosures and an abundance of different tempting treats!
With autumn and winter on the horizon, now is the time to make sure your loved pet is ready for the months ahead. Our tortoise friends may need an annual “MOT” check to help keep them safe during hibernation. It‛s also a good chance to make sure our dogs and cats are up to date with routine flea and worming treatment and spot any signs of ill health or arthritis prior to the cold weather arriving. Our VIP Club helps to spread the cost of routine veterinary care and save you money and our veterinary nurses offer free of charge appointments to help determine the most effective and appropriate preventative parasite care depending on your pets lifestyle.
Dr Faye Bethell leads our team of four highly qualified vets and is a recognised RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Zoological Medicine, so able to treat any exotic pet that might come along. Faye also treats some very exotic species as she works closely with some of Norfolk‛s most popular zoos and zoological centres. The vets are fully supported by a great team of qualified nursing staff able to offer advice for routine pet care and wellbeing including pet weight management, claw clipping and dental advice.
Fully equipped with some of the most advanced equipment available, including digital x-ray , dental x-ray, ultrasound scanner, video endoscopy and laser therapy, we also have our own on-site CT Scanner (something very few Norfolk vets are able to offer), and in-house lab able to provide rapid results helping us treat your pets more effectively and reducing the stressful wait for results. Toll Barn Vets is an independent family run veterinary centre offering 24/7 care for all our clients avoiding the need for stressful visits to unfamiliar practices who don‛t have your pets records available in emergency situations.
It's not all emergencies – we have a luxury Cat Boarding Hotel on site so if you are going away and you cat needs looking after by a dedicated team of veterinary professionals, the Cat Boarding Hotel could be the answer. The past months have left us all concerned about Covid risks and with client and staff safety the highest priority, Toll Barn Vets limits the number of clients able to be in the reception at any one time and provide large separate individual screened cubicles solely for your use during your visit. We also continue to offer the facility for clients to remain in their car while our staff collect your pet and our vets have a discussion with you in our private car park whilst maintaining social distancing.

Norfolk Open Studios 2021 North Norfolk
I have a keen interest in environmental issues and my work is predominantly made from salvaged and reclaimed materials. I live in Great Walsingham and the surrounding countryside is often a great source of inspiration.” Tracey Ross, an artist based in Houghton St Giles near Walsingham, said: “My work explores the horizon and the beauty of Creation inspired by the North Norfolk coast. I love working in acrylics using mixed media to build up the layers and textures. “I enjoy holding art workshops and am in the process of launching my Nigel Skinner, photo credit first online art course! I look forward to Matthew Usher welcoming you to my studio.” Artist Sandra Rowney works from a riverside studio in Hoveton where her love of wild swimming spills into paintings, models, pots, textiles and prints. She said: “During the pandemic I found a way to combine my artwork with my passion for wild swimming. “My work is all about the sea, the river and rock pools. My riverside studio is at Hoveton on the River Bure where I can swim whilst layers are drying on canvases or pots. Norfolk Open Studios then gives me a focal point in the year to work towards and a chance to share and discuss my work with visitors.” Brochures can be picked up from Tourist Information Centres, libraries, cafés and various art venues across Norfolk. Norfolk Open Studios will take place between 25 September and 10 October 2021. For more information visit norfolkstudios.org.uk Norfolk Open Studios will be a part of Norfolk Wonder, a series of activities across the county this autumn presented by Norfolk & Norwich Festival. The programme is to be announced on 6th August. The Norfolk Wonder programme is a part of a Norfolk County Council initiative designed to attract audiences to Norfolk for experiential tourism in the off-season of October 2021 to March 2022.
Artists from across North Norfolk get set to welcome visitors into their studios. Makers and creators from across North Norfolk are preparing to open their studio doors as part of one of the most successful Open Studios schemes in the country. Norfolk Open Studios will take place across 16 days in September and October, a change in dates for the event which will allow visitors to explore and experience Norfolk in the autumn. The free event will see more than 320 artists taking part throughout the county and in North Norfolk 92 artists will be opening their studios to share how they work. As well as the artists opening their studios, numerous schools will be exhibiting in the scheme. Art Trails will also be in place across the county, allowing visitors to enjoy several studios and local attractions in one day. In North Norfolk three schools are taking part – Aldborough Primary School, Cromer Academy and North Walsham Junior, Infant and Nursery Federation. There will be six art trails organised by artists. These will take place in Cromer and surrounding villages, Happisburgh, West Raynham, Bacton, on a route from North Walsham to Southrepps and throughout the villages of Binham, Langham, and Hindringham. Throughout the duration of Norfolk Open Studios, artists will be holding additional events. In North Norfolk there will be an exhibition of past works by artists in the region, an online art auction and a preview exhibition. Ros Dixon, Norfolk Open Studios Administrator, said: “It’s exciting to realise that Norfolk Open Studios is returning this year. After last year’s event was cancelled it feels particularly special, as well as it being the first time the scheme will take place in the autumn. “We hope that the opportunity for visitors to be out and about exploring Norfolk at this magical time of the year, and meeting artists and seeing amazing artwork, will continue to offer much enjoyment and inspiration to people, as Opens Studios always has.” Visitors will find painters, sculptors, weavers, furniture makers, jewellery makers and lots more throughout the varied landscapes of Norfolk. Studios are free to visit and much of the work will be for sale. All details, including studio opening days, directions, art trails and additional events and demonstrations, can be found in the Norfolk Open Studios brochure and on the scheme’s website. Artists taking part could not be more excited to be opening their studios to visitors. Painter Nigel Skinner said: “After a long period of not being able to invite people into my studio I am excited to open my doors to the public once again. “This year’s open studio is the first time in my twenty years of taking part that I am part of an art trail, with three other artists all based at West Raynham Business Park. We will also be hosting a mixed exhibition in spaces adjacent to our studios which will conclude with an art auction. “My studio is situated in the Old Chapel on the former RAF base.

Backgammon
The North Norfolk Backgammon Summer Open drew 10 players who contested a 4-round Swiss, matches to 5 points before lunch and to 7 points after. The winner was Gerry Enslin (Sheringham) who won a very close match (5-all, then 6-all and finally 7-6), and the Summer Trophy, from Brian Metcalf (Aldborough) in what was effectively the final. Cedric Lytton (Sheringham) was third, and Chris March (Briston) 4th. Gerry is also the many-times winner of our chess-problem solving competition, which shows that good chess and backgammon go together. Runner up Brian

Macmillan Cancer Support North Norfolk
CT Baker Group Celebrate 250 Years
Back in 2020, we had many exciting plans lined up to celebrate the incredible milestone of the C T Baker Group’s 250th year anniversary. This included commemorative ‘250’ products in partnership with our local suppliers, in-store activities, and fundraising towards a huge target of £25,000 for East Anglian Children’s Hospice.
Due to our Committee Members retiring from our Macmillan Cancer Support North Norfolk Committee, we are looking for local volunteers to re-form our committee as soon as possible.
As we all know, any aspirations we had for 2020 were soon sadly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Government restrictions, and of course, our own devastation of the fire at Budgens of Holt. It was therefore a joy that on Saturday 14th August all divisions of the C T Baker Group were able to safely join together to celebrate overcoming this challenging period and to finally raise a glass to both our 250th anniversary and look forward to many more years to come as an independent Baker family-owned business. The fun-filled evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all, and staff danced the night away to The Joe Ringer Band and showed off their talents on fairground stalls and games. We’d like to thank Holt Rugby Club for the evening.
Full training will be given to those interested in fund-raising for Macmillan and helping to raise awareness of Macmillan’s services with the work of this wonderful charity. You can do as much or as little as you wish, with just two official meetings a year. For more information please contact -

From North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
vaccination, disease control, feral cats, veterinary care, transportation and animal housing. The animal housing covered the subject of cats coming into care from the same household who it is found do not really get on, something we have seen in the past which is quickly remedied by separating to separate pens as soon as one becomes free. The guide includes information on what constitutes suitable accommodation (including heating and ventilation on cold and hot days) plus how much space each cats needs. This covers how big an area the cats require in their sleeping areas and how high these should be. This has affected us over the years as when purchasing new pens to replace the old, the replacements have to be larger to comply with these guidelines.
We have been very busy over the summer months and have rehomed 39 cats and kittens with another 7 that are reserved and will probably have left us by the time you read this. These include Armani, Amigo and Adonis, three older black kittens whose owner had too many cats. Also, lovely Theo, another black kitten who was handed over to us by a Miramar Vets, having been found under the bonnet of a car. We must not forget Honey, a pretty tabby cat, who came in as a stray with and her 4 kittens, or Roxie whose 5 lovely black kittens were born in care. Bobbie, a ragdoll also rehomed, joined us having been found in poor condition not more than a mile away from Leo another ragdoll (who is still with us and is deaf). So many interesting stories to tell. We are delighted these cats are now happily settled in their new homes and look forward to finding new homes for the new cats and kittens who have taken up the spaces in our pens.
If you are interested in receiving help to. neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
In a previous article I mentioned “thecatgroup” which provides lots of useful information relating to cat care. A recent communication from Head Office advised of another group, Association of Dogs and Cats Homes (ADCH), who had recently updated the guidelines on the Minimum Welfare and Operational Standards with regard to both cats and dogs. They exist to promote best practice in animal welfare and their priority is to ensure that the animals have the best possible chance for new loving and caring homes. Their members include registered charities and not for profit organisations of all sizes and one of their aims is to raise standards amongst animal rescue organisations.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Please be aware that if you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website,www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk where a description and photograph of the cats can be seen. Stephanie does not use a computer for her cat work so there is a delay in responding to enquiries this way and as she deals with enquiries on a first come first serve policy she may have already spoken to someone who is interested in giving the cat a home.

Safer Seals Campaign Raises Funds for RSPCA Seal Rescue
North Norfolk District Council’s Safer Seals campaigning has raised £488.27 to be donated to the RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre. The money will be donated to East Winch RSPCA to continue their important work caring for marine mammals and seals like Mrs Vicar, who was rescued by Friends of Horsey Seals with a flying ring trapped around her neck and taken to the centre. After many months of delicate and specialist rehabilitation to recover from her wounds, she was healthy enough to be released back into the water thanks to the care provided. The Safer Seals Tour was kindly joined by Friends of Horsey Seals to talk to the general public about seal safety in the district and the dangers of flying rings. The tour visited Cromer, Sheringham, Sea Palling and Mundesley as
part of the Council’s commitments to the Blue Flag beach criteria for improving the stretches of coast.
Alongside talking to the public, a flying ring amnesty was held and any harmful rings could be traded in for a 100% recyclable bamboo Frisbee, which pose no threat to the marine mammals if they are lost to the sea. Visitors to the beaches could also make a personal pledge to be conscious of the seals when visiting the coast and be given a small seal plushy toy in return Cllr. Nigel Lloyd, portfolio holder for the Environment said: “I am hopeful that our safer seals campaign reached out to as many people as possible. These beautiful creatures
The Norfolk Coast Dark Skies Festival
I thank all residents and visitors who have followed our advice given and that of seal protection agencies in the district by giving these creatures a wide berth when they see them on our beaches, avoiding the use of hollow flying rings that can get trapped around their necks and by keeping controls of their dogs when around seals.”
Unfortunately, light pollution can have a negative effect on our wildlife, our well-being and the rural atmosphere of the coast. Through this festival we can discover the wonders of our environment after dark and learn how we can all do our bit to preserve the night skies. We’re very interested in talking to parish councils, businesses and organisations who are keen to become more dark skies friendly. More information, event listings and booking details can be found on the Norfolk Coast Partnership website http://www.norfolkcoastaonb.org.uk/partnership/dark-skies-festival25-sep-10-oct-2021/1229 More information about dark skies and what you can do can be found at http://www.norfolkcoastaonb.org.uk/partnership/dark-skies/1120
The Norfolk Coast Dark Skies Festival is returning for its 3rd year this autumn. With an emphasis on wildlife and the dark, a range of face-to-face and online events will include wildlife walks at night, stargazing, soundwalk, talks, podcasts and activities. The 2-week long festival launches on Saturday 25th September at Thornham Village Hall and will celebrate the stunning dark skies and landscapes of the area as well as raise awareness about issues of increasing light pollution. We are really lucky as the Norfolk Coast is one of the darkest areas in the UK. This contributes towards the rural character and feelings of remoteness and tranquillity that we enjoy here. Our wildlife also benefits enormously from the dark night-time – whether they use it to hunt, to hide from predators, reproduce, migrate or simply to sleep like we do.

have been part of our local environment for thousands of years, we therefore have a moral duty to do all we can to protect them.

The International Garden Photographer of the Year exhibition returns to Sheringham Park
Multi-agencies work together to rescue two cut off by the tide in Titchwell Marshes
The International Garden Photographer of the Year exhibition, the world's premier photography exhibition specialising in garden, plant, flower and botanical images, returns to the National Trust’s Sheringham Park this autumn, from Wednesday 1 September to Sunday 31 October. Located in the tranquil surroundings of the Bower Garden, over 40 pictures will be on display celebrating gardens and plants from across the globe. The international nature of the exhibition sits well within the garden setting at Sheringham, which features plants from at least five continents. The competition featured nine main categories including favourites such as ‘The Beauty of Plants’, ‘Beautiful Gardens’ and ‘Abstract Views’ and newly added category ‘Plants & Planet’ – where a portion of the entry fees were donated to WeForest to plant new trees. The exhibition features a wide range of subjects including wildlife, urban settings, abstract views as well as woods and forests – although always with plants as a focus. We had some wonderful feedback about the 2019 exhibition held at Sheringham Park – here are some of the comments from our visitors: ‘The photos showed how many ways there are to appreciate gardens – wide-ranging views, tiny details and nearly abstract representation.’ ‘It captured nature so beautifully – brought the world to my doorstep.’ ‘It was so atmospheric and correctly placed in such a beautiful ‘Bower’.’
Wells inshore lifeboat crew was tasked by HM Coastguard at 6.54pm to go to the assistance of two people cut off by the tide in the area of Titchwell marshes. The D class Iifeboat, Peter Wilcox, launched with a volunteer crew of three outside the boathouse at 7.06pm on the flooding tide, and headed down the harbour channel and out to sea towards Titchwell. The two people were on high ground in the marshes and were visible to the local coastguard teams from Hunstanton and Wells, who had also be tasked to the incident. The inshore lifeboat arrived on scene at 7.43pm and entered the marshes. They were guided to the casualties’ location by the directions given to them from the local coastguard teams. At 7.46pm the inshore lifeboat established that the two people cut off by the tide were safe and well. They were transferred to the lifeboat and taken to the safety of the mainland. At 7.52pm the inshore lifeboat crew handed the casualties over to the care of the local coastguard. The lifeboat was stood down and then made the journey back to Wells Lifeboat Station. The inshore lifeboat was ashore at 8.30pm outside the boathouse on the top of tide. It was then sanitised, rehoused, refuelled and back on service again at 9pm. Lifeboat Operations Manager, Chris Hardy, said ‘I am very happy there was a positive outcome this evening; however, this sort of situation can be avoided. When enjoying our coastline, it is important that people are aware of the tide times and always return back to the mainland at least four hours before high tide to prevent being cut off.’
The International Garden Photographer of the Year is a free exhibition, which is open at the National Trust’s Sheringham Park from Wednesday 1 September to Sunday 31 October 2021, dawn to dusk.
WEYBOURNE WI ARE BACK!
On Wednesday, 4th August, 27 members of Weybourne WI attended an informal meeting at the village hall. It was the first time they had met together for 17 months. On 1st September the first official meeting was held and 30 members attended. Celia Howe, President, welcomed everyone back and introduced Sue Dawson who had come along to entertain us with her talk entitled ‘From Bed and Breakfast to Bed and Bondage’. Sue began by describing how by chance she had moved from London to Great Yarmouth, to start a bed and breakfast business with her husband.
She fell into her career as a Dominatrix, after their guest house struggled to make money during the winter months. Having done some research, she discovered there was a market for a wide variety of other services, and she soon acquired a very different clientele at the guest house. Her tales were very amusing and it was certainly unlike any talk we have ever had before! A vote of thanks was given by Kath Griffiths. Following the talk, members enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea comprising of sandwiches, cakes and scones with jam and cream. This was prepared and served by committee members

RNLI names lifeboat in honour of The Duke of Edinburgh
RNLI chief executive Mark Dowie said: ‘It’s a great honour, not just for Wells Lifeboat Station but for the RNLI as a whole.
‘We had hoped to mark The Duke of Edinburgh’s long service and support for the maritime sector by naming a lifeboat in his honour in his 100th year.
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is proud to announce a new lifeboat will be named in honour of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
The state-of-the-art Shannon class boat (ON1346) will be called Duke of Edinburgh in memory of Prince Philip, who passed away on 9 April this year, aged 99.
‘We heard that The Duke was pleased to learn of the plans to name a lifeboat after him and that it was going to be serving a community so close to Sandringham. Very sadly The Duke passed away before His Royal Highness could see it happen, but we are delighted to pay tribute to his legacy in this way today.’
Her Majesty The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh have a long history with the RNLI. Her Majesty has been Patron of the lifesaving charity since 1952 and The Duke of Edinburgh became a member of the RNLI Council in 1972. Together, they visited several RNLI lifeboat stations over the years, the most recent being the opening of Cowes Lifeboat Station and the naming of its Atlantic 85 class boat in July 2012.
The new lifeboat is the 53rd funded by the generosity of civil servant donations to The Lifeboat Fund as part of the Civil Service charity’s 150th anniversary appeal.
Wells Lifeboat Operations Manager Chris Hardy said: ‘Wells Lifeboat Station is immensely proud and honoured to have its new Shannon class lifeboat named Duke of Edinburgh. We are in no doubt that our new lifeboat will continue the vital work of saving lives at sea, which we know His Royal Highness was so passionate about throughout his lifelong maritime association.’
The RNLI is delighted to honour Prince Philip’s longstanding commitment to maritime services and lifetime of support to Her Majesty The Queen.
Chair of The Lifeboat Fund and Director of GCHQ, Sir Jeremy Fleming said: ‘The Lifeboat Fund is delighted to be the principal donor for the new lifeboat at Wells-next-the-Sea.
The announcement is being made 71 years to the day that The Duke of Edinburgh assumed command of HMS Magpie in 1950 – his very first sea-going command in the Royal Navy.
‘It’s the second lifeboat for Wells with a royal association, the first being the Royal Silver Jubilee that was on service at the station from 1936 to 1945. This one seems especially fitting.’
And in a further nod to that proud moment in his naval career, earlier this summer, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales attached a magpie engraved plate to the new lifeboat which will bear The Duke of Edinburgh’s name and which is currently being built at the RNLI’s All-weather Lifeboat Centre, in Poole, Dorset.
Mrs P Knopp (101) passed away peacefully 0n Monday the 9th August 2021 in Lloyd Court.
The lifeboat is due to go into service in late 2022 at Wells-next-the-Sea, just a short distance from Sandringham, the Royal Estate in Norfolk where The Duke of Edinburgh spent much of his time after stepping back from public duties in August 2017.

North Norfolk Vikings
Tribute to Marguerite Green
North Norfolk Vikings Swimmer, twelve-year-old Isaac Buchan, won a silver medal at the "Future Outlaw 1.2mile Swim" in time of 35.05 He had to battle against choppy waters and swimmers who were a lot older than him. In total there were 43 men taking part. He came 9th overall and runner up in the under 16 category. Isaac takes up the story in his own words. "The event was part of my mums Ironman distance triathlon and was held at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham. I was swimming with lots of adults and older children. When I was going up to the start the weather was quite cold, but they said the water was warm and they didn’t lie, the temperature was very warm, like getting into a bath. When we started you had the option to dive or sit and slide in, I dived off the side into the dark green water. I could just about see my hand as it entered the water. It was cold at the beginning but got so warm. I had to swim 1.2 miles; the water was very choppy. The big orange buoys were difficult to see, but I looked forward every 6-8 strokes and this kept me going in a straight line. The whole time I was thinking about how I was going to feel great after the swim. It was hard work and tiring however, I felt awesome and refreshed and I would do it again and I will. I was so happy to come second in the under 16 age group, I never knew I could swim that fast for so long. I would encourage others to do an organised, safe open water swim if they get the chance, it is a great experience and one that I will do again." Marguerite Green passed away in hospital on 23 July 2021, aged 87. She was a Holt resident all her life, although for the last 2 years she was in a care home in Mundesley. She was born in the family home in Albert Street which she shared with her 2 older sisters and in which her father and his brothers and sisters had also been born. Marguerite had a brief moment of fame several years ago when a lady from the Holt History Group interviewed her about her past. During her working life she was a domestic cleaner at Gresham's School, Hales Court and Lloyds Bank. Many will remember her pushing her shopping trolley through the town. She is survived by a nephew in Australia, a nephew and niece in the Netherlands and lots of distant cousins who were all very fond of her. Heather Wood (nee Green)

Holt launches innovative loyalty programme to encourage residents and visitors to shop local
By creating geofences to anonymously identify customers’ location, which automatically triggers push notifications, residents and tourists of Holt will receive personalised incentives to encourage them to visit local attractions. When they buy in-store, customers continue to receive highly relevant communications and offers – all the while earning towards future rewards and entry into a monthly draw.
My Holt has announced it has launched a new loyalty programme with over 40 local businesses that will help stimulate the town centre and its High Street. Holt has leveraged IQ Connect, an innovative real-time Geo-Loyalty solution designed by Coniq, to significantly increase local businesses’ footfall and sales.
Nigel Hadlow added, “We chose Coniq because they have developed an end-to-end digital platform that will empower us with all the tools and data to drive successful engagement and loyalty for the town. This is really important. It is no longer sufficient for town centres to rely on counting footfall because the number of people entering a shop has become irrelevant unless this data is captured and interpreted to engage individuals based on their personal buying preferences. Coniq gives us a true coalition programme so customers can receive and redeem offers in specific stores while in the running special Project1 Master_Layout 1 future 31/08/2021 16:57 Page 1 marketing campaigns such as treasure hunts that will encourage people to visit our town throughout the day and the week.
“The shortest path to recovery for our country’s town centres is innovation,” said Holt’s Nigel Hadlow. “We have partnered with Coniq, a British technology company because they will give us the digital customer engagement capabilities to truly understand and personalise communications so residents and visitors will be excited and encouraged to support local businesses.” Supported by North Norfolk District Council with funding from the Norfolk Strategic Fund, the new My HOLT loyalty programme will encourage customers to spend time and money in Holt’s unique independent shops, galleries, cafes, restaurants, bars and hotels.
My HOLT is excited to be playing a central role in supporting the town by supplying the modern digital tools needed to ensure the future success of physical retail and our High Street.”
The My HOLT platform identifies and engages with customers throughout the entire shopping journey by sending highly personalised, multichannel communications before, during, and after visiting local retailers participating in the loyalty programme.
The My HOLT app is available now to download on the App Store or get it on Google Play. It’s free!

Want to save a threatened historic building in East Anglia? Nominate it for the Victorian Society’s endangered list
The Victorian Society is seeking nominations for its 2021 Top Ten Endangered Buildings Campaign. The annual event highlights buildings that are in dire need of repairs or are at risk of being lost completely. Buildings included in previous years’ lists have already seen new funding, planning applications, and structural improvements that preserve them for future generations.
This year, Great Yarmouth’s Winter Gardens received a £10m grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, after receiving a Top Ten nomination in 2018. The Council has submitted plans to restore the historic glass and iron structure and create a restaurant and bar area with botanic gardens. With the UK hosting COP26 in November this year, The Top Ten Campaign also raises awareness on how heritage conservation can play a significant role in combatting the causes of climate change.
the Top Ten Campaign is more important than ever to bring heritage and conservation back into public discussion and continue the fight to find new uses to save our endangered historic buildings.” “Ninety-nine per cent of people who live in England and Wales live less than a mile away from a listed heritage site. Preserving our heritage not only improves the places where we live, it also helps to combat the wider climate emergency. Compared to refurbishing a traditional Victorian terrace property, a new building of the same size produces up to 13 times more embodied carbon.” As opposed to operational carbon, embodied carbon is the CO2 associated with the entire construction process, including transport, production of building materials, and energy use.
To find out more about the Victorian society and see all the buildings which have previously been listed in the top ten, visit www.victoriansociety.org.uk. Join the fight to save England and Wales’ Victorian heritage by becoming a member of the Victorian Society at https://www.victoriansociety.org.uk/join
Restoration and reuse of our historic buildings reduces waste, and carbon emissions. A third of the UK’s waste output comes from construction and demolition. Restoring and updating historic buildings reduces operational carbon emissions (carbon emissions created from the day-to-day use of the property such heating, lighting, maintenance) by up to 84 per cent.
Join the campaign to save our heritage nominate a building or structure that deserves some much-needed public attention by emailing topten@victoriansociety.org.uk with details of when the building was built, its location, why the building should be included in our campaign. Nominated buildings or structures must be in England and Wales and built between 1837 and 1914, Listed buildings are more likely to make the Top Ten, and the closing date for nominations is Friday 15th October at midnight. Griff Rhys Jones, President of the Victorian Society said: “After 18 months of a Covid crisis which has seen shops and offices close,

Appeal for SNAP Members
Interested in working with your community and local police to help identify local neighbourhood policing priorities in your area? We are looking for new SNAP (Safer Neighbourhood Action Panel) members to join our meetings across North Norfolk. A SNAP Meeting is a public held meeting where we traditionally meet to discuss local concerns and issues, provide updates on police action and vote in our next community policing priorities. Usually, we hold these SNAP meetings every 3 months for each Safer Neighbourhood area in an effort to ensure that our community policing priorities remain current and reflect what is important to local residents. Due to the pandemic these meetings have been held virtually over Microsoft Teams.
For North Norfolk these Safer Neighbourhood areas are North Walsham, Cromer, Holt, Wells, Stalham, Sheringham and Fakenham. During the meeting priorities are put forward and it’s decided what the policing priority will be for each area for the next 3 months.
If you’re interested in becoming a SNAP member, please email EONorthNorfolk@norfolk.pnn.police.uk with details of the area you are interested in. This is an exciting opportunity to engage with your community and local police, working together to identify local issues and priorities within your neighbourhood with a view to keeping your neighbourhood as a safe place to live, work and visit.
Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Kenneth Grahame. www.holtchronicle.co.uk

With her distinctive black sail, Wherry Maud is one of Norfolk’s best loved sights on the Norfolk Broads. The only remaining trading wherry of typical construction, she is maintained by Wherry Maud Trust’s team of dedicated volunteers who run trips throughout the year, keeping alive a significant part of the history and culture of the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads. The Wherry Maud Trust campaign to raise money for a new support boat for Maud began in May 2021 and ran until the end of July. The full £10,500 needed was raised. The final £2,000 came from two grants of £1,000 each from Love the Broads and The Lady Hind Trust. Wherry Maud Trust extends grateful thanks for the grants and to all those individuals who donated during the campaign. A suitable boat has now been purchased. Even though we have achieved our objective of raising the £10,500 for the tender our fundraising efforts will remain active, and people can continue to make donations to help secure the future of Maud by clicking the Donate button on the home page of wherrymaudtrust.org. Commercial Manager Changes Trains and Arrives in Sheringham
The North Norfolk Railway has welcomed Graham Hukins to the post of Commercial Manager at the popular 5½ mile heritage line.
Graham will head the team responsible for marketing, bookings, ticketing, customer service, station catering, gift shops, on-train dining and special events and joins the railway at a key time as the business continues to rebuild following the lockdowns and other restrictions caused by Covid-19.
“The team here are doing a great job and I’m delighted to be joining them at this busy time” said Graham, adding, “My second day proved to be the busiest standard day in the line’s history with over 1,500 tickets sold and September sees the return of the popular Autumn Steam Gala on 3rd, 4th and 5th and the spectacular Forties Weekend on 18th and 19th so it’s an exciting time to get on board.”
Graham has spent the last two years at Didcot Railway Centre as Head of Visitor Experience and Marketing where he helped increase numbers, revenue and visitor satisfaction at the 21-acre living museum. His career also includes spells at the Kent & East Sussex Railway and Royal Engineers Museum as well as 16 years as Visitor Centre Manager at Shepherd Neame – Britain’s Oldest Brewer.
North Norfolk Railway Managing Director, Hugh Harkett, commented, “We are very pleased to welcome Graham to the senior management group at the railway, he has a wealth of commercial experience in the tourism and heritage sectors which will help us as we recover from Covid and grow the business.”
The railway’s steam and heritage diesel trains run daily until 30 September and on most days in October – advance booking is strongly recommended, and full details of timetables, special events and other services can be found at nnrailway.co.uk.
Do your eyes give your age away? Erase signs of ageing, safely and effectively. Latest treatment updates from the Coltishall Clinic.
Eyes have always been a primary facial feature, referred to as “the window to the soul” but with most of us using masks now a days they have become even more important as a focal point. Unfortunately eye area is not a forgiving area to treat and requires a comprehensive assessment and treatment approach.
Forehead and temple lifts using threads, fillers, lasers or surgical brow lift or mini brow lift may be other suitable options. A comprehensive treatment program will be devised after your consultation and assessment.
So what are the effects of ageing that need to be addressed?
For more information or to book an appointment log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call 01603 736487
There are three main changes that occur with ageing. Loss of volume, loss of skin elasticity causing sagging skin and sun damage that affects the skin quality. In addition to these changes, wrinkles form because of repetitive movements of the frowning and smiling muscles. These changes affect the whole of your face so we may need to address changes in your forehead, brows and temples also for natural and pleasing results.
How can we help you reduce first signs of ageing around the eye area?
Careful use of injections can restore volume and reduce dynamic wrinkles formed by muscle over activity. Dark circles can be improved with hyaluronic acid fillers such as restylane or your own fat. We can use lasers to create a new skin and reduce and reverse sun damage. Finally if required we can use surgery to lift the brows or remove excess eyelid skin.
How do you perform eyelid skin tightening or skin removal to address more advanced changes of skin ageing?
The traditional blepharoplasty is a more invasive procedure with considerable recovery period and often involves overnight hospital stay. www.holtchronicle.co.uk
It also often involves removal of muscle layer and fat from around the eyeball. More invasive a procedure, longer is the list of potential complications. Also too much fat removal can lead to a hollowed out artificial or operated upon look. Now we know that a fuller brow is more natural and more attractive. What other options may be possible?

Ladies Welcome!
A favourite image of a lawn bowls club is exclusively elderly men cogitating their next moves on the bowling green; with wives in the pavilion making the tea and serving up the cake. While I would not entirely reject this as a picture of some clubs, this is not a fitting match for us at Holt. Our players may be somewhat elderly, but all men – not at all. Our players are almost exactly divided equally between the genders.
To lighten the atmosphere further we held a “best dressed hat competition” which included some most ingenious designs.
As always at this time of year we keep asking “where did the season go to”. It seems only last week that we were launching our first event in this covid-ridden year, and now we have very little bowling left – finals of our internal competitions, a county charity day and a visit by the Rugby Police bowling club - on tour for a three-day visit to Norfolk.
And so it is that we have just had a club competition featuring the Ladies versus the Gentlemen – a very entertaining day with (as you might guess) much banter between the teams. Every lady played against all the male opponents, with a corresponding arrangement for the Gentlemen. It came as no surprise to me that the ladies won (91 shots to 80) showing the strength of bowling by the ladies in the club. So come on ladies! – think about joining us in 2022.

A Close Race At The Blakeney Regatta
Amidst this season’s many gentler, social rows to Blakeney Point or to Cley, there has been a recent example of stern competition. A hotly contested race took place on Saturday 28th August at the Blakeney Regatta. On this occasion the club’s two skiffs – Hoi Larntan and Bluejacket – were pitted against each other with crews prepared to take on some rough, gusty conditions over a course leading towards Blakeney Point. There was tense expectancy as the boats were held on the starting line. From the beginning, neither crew was prepared to give way as skiffs moved alongside each other and oars clashed several times. The turning point was particularly exciting as coxes manoeuvred to gain the best position for the home run. Hoi Larntan led the whole way but was overtaken a few lengths before the finishing line by Bluejacket. What a race! The Worley Cup, a beautiful trophy dating back to the 1930s, was a very apt and welcome prize for the winners.
IS YOUR CONSERVATORY TOO HOT IN THE SUMMER & TOO COLD IN THE WINTER?
Come and try skiff rowing for yourselves. There is no obligation to compete; you may prefer to exercise and chat to other crew members who simply enjoy outdoor activity after months of restrictions. Everyone is welcome, regardless of experience. You are entitled to three free rows before deciding whether to join the club. Interested? Then phone club captain Humphrey on 07542 371469. You can also gain further information on the club website at crablakeney.wordpress.com. Follow the club’s activities on Instagram and on Facebook.
Come and join members of Blakeney Rowing Club on the water. Barry Howes.

The Holt Chronicle September 2021
Is it ever too late to make a will? by Kieran Athow, Solicitor, Hayes + Storr Whilst planning ahead and making a will is the best way to arrange the division of your estate, sometimes plans need to be put in place suddenly and at the last minute from a hospital bed, hospice or care home.
Testamentary Capacity To make a will or amend an existing will, you must have the requisite “testamentary capacity”. This means that you must understand that you are making or amending a will and its effect, understand the extent of your estate and comprehend any claims to which your estate could be subject to following your death.
If there is any doubt as to your capacity, then a medical report may be required prior to the will being executed. For example, whilst a diagnosis of dementia does not necessarily mean that you lack testamentary capacity, it would be advisable to obtain a medical report to confirm the position.
Solicitors are well versed in these issues and will help to ensure that a valid will can be executed in time.
Precautions Against Undue Influence Any decision to make a will or amend an existing will must be your own. If there is
any sign of undue influence from a third party, then steps will need to be taken to protect you. For example, it may be that you have asked a family member or a friend to contact your solicitor on your behalf. If that person is also a beneficiary under the provisions of your Will (or could indirectly benefit from the same), then your Solicitor must be satisfied that they have not exerted ‘undue’ pressure on you to make or amend your will in particular terms.
Unless your Solicitor is satisfied that your instructions are yours and yours alone, they will be unable to act for you with respect to drafting a new Will or amending an existing Will.
Finding Witnesses A will made in any setting, including a care home or hospital, must be signed by you in the presence of two independent witnesses. Given the urgent nature, and the fact that your witnesses must both be present at the time you sign your will) the most practical arrangement is for all three of you to sign at the same time in each other’s company.
Your witnesses must be independent, and they cannot be named within your will as a beneficiary, nor can they be the spouse or civil partner of any of your named beneficiaries.
Finding willing witnesses to a “deathbed will” can be difficult, as many medical professionals may not be willing to witness the Wills of those in their care. However, your solicitor can usually bring a colleague with them, and they can both act as your witnesses.
Making a Deathbed Gift If there is insufficient time to make a Will, or if there are relatively small gifts that you want to leave to certain people without the formality of making a will, you may be able to leave them by way of a deathbed gift.
Deathbed gifts have complex rules and so it is always best to seek advice from a solicitor to prevent any problems arising later for your executors.
