As I write this the TV is telling me it is six months since the conflict in Ukraine stated (or at least escalated) and it occurs to me that the media has ‘gone off the boil’ a bi the impact the war is having on the Ukrainian people I also mindful that the Festive Season is not that far away, traditionally a time of coming together and cel ebrating With so many people displaced by the war, this year will be a very different one for them. So maybe now is the time to consider what we can do to let them know they are not forgotten. Look out for opportunities to donate something which would bring a little cheer to them, the necessities are important but also toys and treats for the children There are lots of charities collecting for Ukraine, but please make sure you choose genuine fundraising organizations

A Note from th e Editor

Enjoy your September magazine

In order to share this good fortune, we are going to open a free drop in Community Café at the beginning of October as an extension of our regular Thursday Community Café, which will continue to operate once a week. The Drop In Café will provide hot and cold drinks, snacks, cake and filled rolls at lunchtime, and will be open Monday to Friday from 9 30am to 2pm, and will operate on a donations basis There will be magazines, books, jigsaw puzzles and music, and hopefully it will become a place for people to gather and meet, allowing them to enjoy our heating and lighting whilst turning off their own at home. We were also thrilled to announce this week that Barclays Bank will be providing a service 2 days a week on a Monday and Wednesday in the Venue from the first week of November, operating from the current Citizens Advice offices to the right of the building This is in addition to the TSB who continue to operate in the Venue on a Thursday Citizens Advice will still be at the Venue on a Friday, providing their vital support services to the town

News from the Venue

With the cost of living crisis starting to really bite, we have been keen to see what we can do to help at the Venue Luckily, thanks to some foresight by our treasurer last year, we are on a protected fixed tariff for another two years, so have not been affected by the increasing energy costs

20 YEARS EXPERIENCE - CITY & GUILDS APPROVED 07943 info@northnorfolklandscapes.co.uk740374 5 Station Road, West Runton, Norfolk. Tel: 01263 837611 www.williamsofwestrunton.co.uk Williams OF WEST RUNTON Upholstery, Curtains and Blinds Hand made sofas and chairs Traditional & MadeRe-Upholsterycontemporarytomeasurecurtainsand blinds Vertical, Roller & blackout blinds Loose Curtaincoverstracks & poles supplied and Repairsfitted and alterations At Williams all of our work is carried out at our West Runton premises as it has been for the last 30 years; no middlemen means greater value for money. Whether its a spring repair, new seat foams or a complete lounge suite with co-ordinating curtains you can be guaranteed of first class customer service and attention to detail. In our showroom we have pattern books from Designers Guild, Romo, Linwood, Harlequin, Scion and many more and we are proud to be Sandersons fabric and wallpaper Wespecialists.nowstock a range of home accessories including a large selection of Dora Designs doorstops and draught excluders.

On that theme, but closer to home, the cost of living crisis is worsening, and many families will soon be having to make the choice between heat or eat We are all going to experience increased fuel bills and inflation, but if you can donate just one item for the Food Bank when you do your weekly shop it all helps If you receive vouchers from supermarket reward schemes, consider donating those to the Food Bank as these can purchase items needed for food parcels. Coming together and helping each other has always got us through historically, we just have to what we do best again

One of the challenges of running the Venue is to provide space and time for a wide variety of groups, services and businesses, as well as providing affordable rentable space for private hire, ensuring everyone can enjoy this community facility. Bringing Barclays into the family of user groups at the Venue not only protects much needed banking facilities for the town, but also enables more income to the Charity to further increase the support to organisations such as Norfolk Citizens Advice, whose services are needed now more than ever in the current economic climate Huge thanks to Duncan Baker for introducing Barclays to us and suggesting the Venue as a possible option.

Last month, we put out a call on social media to see what other things people would like to see happening at the Venue, and in response we have scheduled another Tabletop Sale on 22nd October and a Family Fun Day on 29th October Both should be great events, and we are particularly excited about the Family Fun Day, with lots of great free activities for children and families to enjoy and free entry There will also be tombola, lucky dip, raffle, delicious refreshments, a picture competition for the kids, and as its so close to Halloween there’s a fancy dress competition for the kids and a kid’s disco at the end of the day It ’s a great way to entertain the kids during the half term, so do come along and join us on Sat 29th October for some Autumn fun! If you would like to donate anything for the tombola or raffle or help out on the day please do give us a call on 01263 713427 or email info@thevenueholt com

Retention of Barclays Service in Holt at the Venue

Predominantly made up of family homes, all the properties on the site will either be Shared Ownership, or for social rent The development follows previous successful partnership working with Lovell in Acle and Hopton and is Repton’s first all affordable scheme The project is set to be completed in T2023.hereason

In April this year the DfT notified us of an indicative allocation of funding for three years The County Council has since worked alongside bus opera tors to shape details of what the money would be spent on should we secure it To help shape our plans in May we launched a consultation asking for res idents’ views on bus services in Norfolk More than 1500 people took part in the consultation which helped us to identify what the barriers are to using buses and which of the priorities within the plan are most important to them

The Saxon Heath estate in Attleborough has been designed in conjunction with Lovell to meet high design and specification requirements of Orbit Homes, who will eventually own and manage the site

for including this in my report, besides updating you on a Norfolk County Council initiative through Repton properties, is let you know that I will be seeking similar ventures in and around Holt if any land opportunities open up £49.55m Funding to Improve Norfolk Bus Services Confirmed Norfolk has been successful in securing £49 55m of funding from the De partment for Transport (DfT) to make the county's bus services and facilities

I am delighted to announce that we have retained Barclays banking services in THoltheVenue will now be the new home to Barclays, two days a week from Monday 7th November 2022, before the main branch shuts in December After Barclays' announcement to close, Duncan Bakers office immediately worked hard with all elected members for the area, Duncan Baker Clirs Eric Vardy and Georgie Perry Warnes along with Mayor Rodney Smith, to help save these vital services Together we recommended that Barclays approach Anthony and Carolyn Burn who already do a fantastic job in providing community space in the centre of Holt at the revitalised Community Centre The Venue Negotiations have been ongoing since mid June; however, we're pleased to now say that a commercial agreement has been reached for Barclays to serve customers for two full days per week, from 9 00am until 17 00pm on a Monday and a Wednesday with an option to increase to 3 days should they need to in the future This is only four hours less in opening hours than the current branch provides and the longer afternoon opening is another benefit given the current bank shuts at 2 30pm

The Museum is open on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and some Wednesdays. One of our boats is running every open day, and there are now life jackets for the four legged passengers too See our website for prices, availability and full details

The colour of a person’s urine will also provide an indicator of whether they are well hydrated the darker it is, the more fluid is required

It is important to stress that symptoms of dehydration can be akin to those of dementia with changes in mood, confusion, impaired thinking and an increase in falls Couple this with a person already living with dementia who may forget to drink regularly, it will be important to set up reminders, such as a visual aid or to provide water rich foods such as cucumber, melon or courgettes to their diet.

Everyone is welcome to either hear the memories of others or to share memories of their own Perhaps bring along old photographs of people and places; and/or make a note of particular events, people, shops and places you remember most strongly, and would like to talk about, along with your earliest &/or most vivid memories of Holt

Usually, the third Tuesday of the month, over a cup of tea or coffee, the next event is on Tuesday the 20th of September, from 3 00pm 5 00pm

At the Age Concern North Norfolk Day Centre, we can observe and monitor fluid intake but keeping cool required some additional

Keeping Cool!

With temperatures soaring like never before, it is important that everyone, especially older people, ensures that they are drinking enough fluids Each of us has a body made up of 60% water which is essential for the body and the brain to function With the higher heat, we lose more water through sweating as well as through breathing and digestion and being dehydrated can have serious health implications for older people

Why is a Lasting or Enduring Power of Attorney important?

If you have not made an Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney it is still possible for someone who care for you to be appointed on your behalf to take decisions for you. You would need to make an application to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship A Deputy does the same job as an Attorney, but the application is time consum ing, expensive and may not result in the person / people you want managing your affairs, as the Deputy is chosen by the Court, not you It is better to make a Lasting Power of Attorney as it is quicker, cheaper and you choose your Attorney

The Financial consequences of Dementia

If you lose the ability to manage your own financial affairs, a partner or family member cannot automatically deal with things on your behalf Having a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place is just as important as having a Will It gives you the reassurance of knowing your wishes will be respected if you become unable to make decisions for yourself and it enables people you choose to have access to your finances to make payments on your behalf

World Alzheimer's Month is an annual international event held in September and run by Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI) The aim of the month is to raise awareness and challenge stigma surrounding Alzheimer's and dementia This year ’s theme is ‘the power of knowledge’, so we’ve prepared an article on the legal consequences of dementia which highlights the need to plan for later life

Having a Will allows you to decide what happens to your property and possessions and choose who they go to Wills can be put in place using Trusts to protect your property and to ensure beneficiaries in receipt of means tested benefits don't lose their entitlements through an inheritance You will need to have capacity to make or change an existing Will If you have dementia you may still be able to make a new Will or change your Will, but you should speak to your solicitor who may also need to contact your GP to check you do have capacity

Lin Whitehead, Partner, professional Member of Solicitors for the Elderly and Court of Protection Solicitor said ‘‘Here at Clapham & Collinge LLP, our lawyers are keen to do what they can, having seen first hand the devastating affect this condition has on the families who care for those diagnosed with dementia Ensuring you have the correct legal documents in place and forward planning can protect yourself and your loved ones in the event of an incapacitating illness such as dementia, an accident or injury I always advise my clients to plan ahead for later life and have those important conversations with their family and friends while they can ’’

At Clapham & Collinge LLP we have a team of expert lawyers who provide advice and assistance in the preparation of your Lasting Powers of Attorney to make sure they are right for you and reflect your wishes We also register the documents as soon as they are prepared to ensure that they can be used straight away if needed To find out more or to arrange an appointment, please contact us today on 01263 823398, email enquiries@clapham collinge co uk or visit www clapham collinge co uk

Following a diagnosis of dementia you may be worried and it makes good sense to take steps to ensure financial matters are taken care of. You should check you are getting all the help and state benefits you are entitled to, e g do you qualify for Attendance Allowance?

Care Home and Housebound Patients - The Surgery will ensure that all care home and housebound patients are offered both the Flu and Covid vaccinations in early October.

Co-administration of both vaccines is a safe and efficient method of vaccination. Patients can attend these clinics and decline to have one or the other of the vaccines, however, we would encourage patients to have both vaccines as we will not be holding separate catch-up clinics at a later date.

Holy Matrimony: 10th September: Taylor Jay Harris with Thomas Ian Stewart Funerals: 2nd September: John Richard Elson

The rising cost of living, including soaring energy costs means that inflation, is now over 10% and is forcast to reach 18% This coming autumn and winter we will see and experience further rises in the cost of energy which will mean that some people in our community may be facing a financial crisis. Difficult choices between “heat ” and “eat ” will be a stark reality for some That is why the Church is taking the lead in establishing a Community Support Fund to help those living in fuel poverty

The Parish Church is also not immune from the rise in the cost of living Rising energy costs will mean it will cost more to heat and light our premises this year. Our basic costs have also risen and we continue to meet our obligation to pay £67,400 to the Norwich Diocese each year In order to maintain the Church’s presence in the parish we rely on people’s generosity in giving, fund raising, fees from occasional offices and income from the hire of the church hall and meeting room. For the first time in 3yrs, due to the Covid Pandemic, we will be collecting in Holt on Friday 30th September hoping that people will give as generously as they can according to their means. There will also be an opportunity to give in Church on Sunday 2nd October I am very much aware that times are financially hard and are set to get harder If you can, please help us help those in greatest need and to maintain the church presence in and for the wider community Every little helps and is very much appreciated

Most people have heard of ‘Rescue Remedy ’ It is also known as ‘Crisis Formula’ I often spot the bright yellow bottle in people’s bags or on their kitchen windowsills Rescue Remedy contains just five of the thirty eight possible remedies offered within the system and so is not fully representative of the support the complete system offers People often say to me that Rescue Remedy doesn’t work for them, but maybe they just haven’t tried the optimal blend of remedies?

Dear Jo,

or to make an appointment please call:

We understand they have been subjected to verbal abuse from members of the public. This is beyond the pale and must not be tolerated when staff are doing their very best under extreme conditions

I would like to say a very large Thank You to everyone who sent so many lovely cards, gifts, flowers and best wishes on the occasion of my birthday It was a very special celebration and you all helped to make it a such a super day

Sciatica

A treatment bottle has enough remedy for two to three weeks of treatments During this time your emotional needs may change, so it is best to plan on a short consult every two to three weeks until the emotional balance becomes more stable

Headaches

This morning my wife and I walked through Spout Hills entering from the A148 Fakenham Rd and exiting onto the old railway track

Consultations are now available at Holt Consulting Rooms. Contact reception on 01263 711712 to book.

It has been a little while since we have done this little walk But ‘Boy o Boy ’ what an absolute delight it was There were some groundsmen cutting grass and the Spout was gurgling merrily, really holding its own in this warm weather

As Holt residents, my wife and I have for several years attended Holt Medical Centre and pharmacy for health issues large and small We have, over time, experienced the very best of attention from all levels of staff We have found them exceptional in every way. They are very professional and take a great deal of time to sort out any problems and worries that arise They are to be congratulated If care and compassion is required, they have it in abundance, especially with the older generation Their courtesy and understanding are to be admired Regarding the pharmacy, it is very obvious they have been working under extreme pressure for a long time and it seems they have gone the extra mile by starting their working day very early This is a fantastic attitude

Dear Jo,

Lower

The remedies see the best results in treating emotional imbalances This ability to gently support other modalities of treatment was one of the many benefits that attracted me to the system.

Generally, a Bach Flower Practitioner blends somewhere between three and seven stock remedies together to form a treatment Each of the stock remedies are extracts of mostly British native plant species Consultations are best done in person but can be done via Zoom if needed. The first meeting we would talk through your reasons for seeking support This understanding of your current challenges would allow me to choose the specific blend of remedies to support you We would talk through my choice of remedies before I prepared a treatment bottle for you

The workshop gets under way with distribution of scores from 10:00 am At the close of the workshop all singers will make their way the short distance to St Peter ’s Church where a full performance will take place at 4:00 pm It is very much hoped that friends and families of the singers as well as other members of the local community will come along to St Peter ’s to enjoy this short concert and celebrate the occasion

A Scullery Maid’s Life

A Holt Library Friends event.

Later that evening four members joined the Sheringham Carnival procession and paraded through the town dressed in a dragon costume. These four fun loving ladies are members of a Morris dancing group which is run jointly with Briston and Melton Constable WI The group meet each Tuesday morning at The Copeman Centre in Briston and have a great time learning a variety of dances Following a short summer break, dancing will recommence on 6th September Members from other WI groups in North Norfolk would be very welcome to join us Please contact Lyn Reid on 07940 223393 for further details

Holt has a wealth of Georgian properties beneath which, in some cases, lays a cellar or indeed a kitchen, either of which could well pre date the structure above ground. Some lay undiscovered, as was the case with the one recently exposed in Star Plain, some are used on a daily basis, whilst others are full of ‘treasures’ too precious to sell or throw away This world, hidden from public view, has immense value to our town as it can, in many cases, add to and enrich our understanding of Holt ’s history

The Society is now seeking owners / occupiers of buildings, within the Holt Conservation area, who either have a current cellar or one that was previously ‘filled in’ If you are one of these fortunate people, do please contact us in order that one of our members, with the owner ’s permission, may gather the information in order that it can be recorded The details will be held securely on a database by The Society and made available, with the owners’ consent, to historians and research bodies To maintain their own privacy when recording the details, owners will be able to have their actual locations withheld from public view

If you have a cellar, we would love to hear from you Please either send your name, address and contact details to The Holt Society, 23 Cromer Road, Holt NR25 6EU or by email to holtsocietymembership@outlook com We would be so grateful to receive your response and will be in contact with you to agree how your information can assist us

A Busy Afternoon and evening for Weybourne WI

It was another warm afternoon on Wednesday, 3rd August when Celia Howe, President, welcomed 31 members and 2 visitors to the village hall for the meeting of Weybourne WI

The Holt Society, with the help of some of the more established surveyors in the town, are launching a project to endeavour to record the details of these cellars within the Holt Conservation area, for future reference The intention is to work with the owners to record the stories associated with their cellar, its size and structure, along with any features that may shine a light on possible past uses We know, for instance, that one cellar extended way beyond its current length and once housed a rifle range! Another has clear charred evidence of the fire in 1708

The Hidden World Beneath Holt

Do you live within Holt ’s Conservation area? If so, this will be of interest to you especially if you happen to have a cellar (open or filled in)!

We then went on to enjoy a delicious cream tea, which was prepared and served by committee members

The afternoon ended with the drawing of the raffle

After a brief business meeting we were entertained with a talk by a Hospital Chaplain. He began by describing how he had become involved with this voluntary work and went on to regale us with various anecdotes relating to his induction to chaplaincy and the experiences he has had whilst being on call He stressed the importance of chatting at length with patients and said it has been a privilege to share people’s joy and sorrow during his time in this role A vote of thanks was given by Celia Howe

The squeeze is getting tighter at the tills across the country, and we’ve all got to try to make our pounds go further it seems just to be able to pay the heating bills Luckily, the supermarkets have cottoned on and are at least trying to help out a little with offers on goods A lot of these seem to be on highly processed foods though, so if you like real food, the best thing is to get back to basics and choose foods that tend not to fluctuate too much with the market Potatoes can usually be bought for the same prices across the seasons, and if you buy in bulk and store them in your garage or shed in the cool you’ll get an even better price. They are a staple food for a reason; there’s just so much you can do with a spud! They can do breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks and are a good belly filler, plus they are marvellous at taking on other flavours

Breakfast Spud Hash

2 tsp curry powder

4 blocks frozen spinach, defrosted (available most supermarkets, or use 1 bag fresh)

Tsp Smoked paprika

Editor ’s Recipe

2 fat cloves garlic, finely diced

Ingredients

Carolyn Burn Grove Sept 22_Layout 1 31/08/2022 16:31 Page 1

375g self raising flour

Method

Gently fry the onion, garlic and ginger in a tablespoon of oil until translu cent, then add in the curry powder and mix well Place potatoes in the pan and turn to coat well, add in a little more oil if needed Stir through the spinach and cook for a further 5 minutes being careful not to burn it Serve immediately with mango chutney, naan bread and rice

Quick Saag Aloo

Apple and Sultana Cake

1 tsp turmeric powder

I large white onion

Thumb size piece ginger, peeled and diced small Cooked new potatoes (or use a tin of new potatoes, drained)

Super Spuds!

Preheat your oven to 180C/Gas 4 Line and grease a deep 18cm (7”) round cake tin Put the sultanas and chopped apple in a bowl with the milk and put to one side

Mix the flour, brown sugar, mixed spice and lemon rind together, blend in the melted butter and egg and when evenly mixed add the fruit mixture and beat in with a spatula or wooden spoon until well combined Pour into the prepared cake tin, level the mixture and sprinkle over the demerara sugar. Bake in the oven for approx 1½ hours or until firm to the touch

Jo Editor

Leave in the tin to cool for 5 10 minutes then turn out onto a cooling rack and leave to until cold This cake keeps well for a few days in an airtight tin or wrap in baking paper then foil and freeze Enjoy!

2 teaspoons mixed spice

250g sultanas

You can also make up a batch of crumble filling with apple and add whatever berries you choose (foraged blackberries are good) sprinkled with sugar, whip up some crumble top ping, assemble the crumbles and cook in the oven at 180C/Gas4 for 30mins or so, cool and freeze

185g butter, melted 1 egg, beaten 60g demerara sugar

A little oil for frying

1 egg per person

Gently fry the onion in a non stick frying pan with little oil over a medium heat, being careful not to burn it Once translucent, add in the veg and the herbs and paprika and stir to coat (add a little more oil if needed but don’t drown it). Fry gently until all heated through, making room in the pan to crack in an egg and cook through, then serve with baked beans

7 point Times

Great budget savvy recipes ready to go.

Coconut oil or vegetable oil (coconut oil is now widely available in most su permarkets for reasonable prices, and Larners do a large jar for £6 50 that lasts a long time)

Keep a couple of tins of new potatoes on the shelf for recipes such as this too, they make a super quick meal I hope you find these recipes helpful, and maybe use them as inspiration to experiment further with one of our national favourites

If you have an apple tree, or know someone who has, then chances are you will be getting a surplus of fruit very soon and wondering what to do with it all. I have never been very successful at storing apples so would rather do a bit of batch baking and freezing to use them up This cake is simple to make and easy to scale up to make several at once (saving on fuel to cook them too!), then simply wrap up well when cool and freeze for another day

Cooked new or old potatoes, cut into chunks (or use a tin of new potatoes, drained)

Grated rind of 1 lemon

Mug full of defrosted veg such as green beans, peas or sweetcorn

The classic jacket and spud and beans features regularly in our house as it just really hits the spot

From North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

At present we are offering guidance to a lady who has a stray cat in her garden She cannot keep it as her own cat is not very happy having it there We did check

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858 Please be aware that if you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website, www north walsham cats org uk where a description and photograph of the cats can be seen

Cushing’s disease (also called hyperadrenocorticism) is caused by an overproduction of cortisol, a naturally occurring steroid hormone This overproduction is usually due to a benign tumour of either the pituitary gland (a gland found at the base of the brain) or one of the adrenal glands (found in the abdomen, next to each kidney) Although this sounds a little scary, it’s a disease we know a lot about and can control well to give pets a normal life.

How is Cushing’s disease treated?

These include high blood pressure, diabetes, pancreatitis and increased susceptibility to infection However, Cushing’s disease can be successfully managed enabling your dog to return to their normal lifestyle Often the treatment of choice is a tablet which is given once a day and acts by reducing the production of cortisol by the adrenal

What are the signs of Cushing’s disease in dogs?

Often dogs will show excessive thirst and frequent urination, increased appetite and therefore weight gain Some owners may notice that their dog starts to get a pot bellied appearance, hair loss and thin skin Other symptoms which can be seen are excessive panting, muscle loss or weakness, lethargy and increased frequency of urinary and skin infections

What is Cushing’s disease?

How is Cushing’s disease diagnosed in dogs?

Cushings syndrome

After a very quiet month on the homing front in July, in August so far, we have already had fifteen cats and kittens who have either left for their new homes or will be leaving us very shortly

Unfortunately, when he was neutered only one testicle could be found despite a thorough search It may be that he only ever had one, but it is important to make sure as, if there is another one and it is not removed, it could have serious consequences later on. The blood test will identify whether he needs further investigation before joining his new family, who are only too happy to await the result of the test

One of those re homed was Delphine (now Darcy) a very pretty little tortie and white girl who joined us from an outside situation with her two brothers She settled into her new home within a day and her new family are delighted with her Another cat, called Bear, a very handsome and friendly lad, who joined us, having been handed in to Westover as a stray, has also been chosen but cannot leave at present as we have to wait for the result of a blood test to determine whether or not he needs another operation.

If your dog is suspected to have Cushing’s syndrome your vet will perform blood tests specific for Cushings disease and known as either an ACTH stimulation test or a low dose dexamethasone suppression test

Cushing’s disease will progress if left untreated and can increase the risk of your dog developing other, potentially serious, conditions for which treatment can be intensive and costly

Lionel is another lovely black cat who joined us via Westover. He is a bit timid at present, but not surprising in view of his recent experience Before joining us, he required an operation to remove his front right leg which was broken and too badly infected to save He needs time for his wound to heal, to adjust to losing his leg and to learn to trust people again Rest assured he will have all the time he needs before being made available for adoption

the cat to see if it was chipped and discovered it was. We then checked with the company which holds the owner ’s details and tried to contact the person named on their records, but unfortunately have had no response We assume they must have moved as the cat was found in a different locality and they have either not updated their address, phone and email details, or have re homed the cat and the new owner has not made the necessary changes. We have given the lady some of our paper collars to put on the cat to see if there is an owner out there If there is no response, we will take the cat in as soon as we have a space available and hold her for seven days before she has a vet check and then putting her up for adoption If you do have a cat and move or re home it, please do make sure that the relevant information is shared with the company that holds the chip record. There are several companies, so it is important to contact the correct one

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher) This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

Stephanie does not use a computer for her cat work so there is a delay in responding to enquiries this way and as she deals with enquiries on a first come first serve policy, she may have already spoken to someone who is interested in giving the cat a home

We are on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham

will advise a blood test shortly after starting the medication and at intervals throughout your pets life to monitor how your dog is responding to treatment and ensure they are receiving the most effective dose

Local writer/actor Mark Kitto performs his entertaining solo play ‘Chinese Boxing ’ at the Auden Theatre on 21 September

Another Round of ‘Chinese Boxing

After several sold out local shows last year, North Norfolk actor and writer Mark Kitto is again performing his solo show ‘Chinese Boxing ’ , on Wednesday 21 Sept at the Auden Theatre, Gresham’s, in Holt In a nice twist, WH Auden, former Gresham’s pupil whom the theatre is named after, also wrote about China in his ‘China Sonnets’, inspired by an infamous trip he made there in 1938 with Christopher Isherwood ‘Chinese Boxing ’ uses the story of the Chinese Boxer Rebellion of 1900 to talk about relations between China and the West It begins as a lecture given by Sir Claude Macdonald (played by David Niven in the 1963 film ’55 Days in Peking ’ about the same episode) and develops into an entertaining piece of theatre, perfectly suited for the Auden The show is followed by a Q & A session that could get lively Mark lived in China for 18 years and has written two books and many articles about the country He was Prospect Magazine’s China columnist He performed on stage, in Chinese, with the Shanghai People’s Arts Theatre and is now a professional actor in the UK.

In addition to the prints on show there was a digital display and the opportunity to buy prints and cards from stalls set up by several of the members One aspect of the exhibition was that visitors were asked to vote for their favourite print and surprisingly the top three were all landscapes The winner was Robbie Spencer with his image entitled "A Glint of Light", second was Robert Geldard with "Gateway to the Fells" and third was Rob Palethorpe with "A Beach Gathering" Thanks to all our visitors and those who voted. There was also a raffle which was won by Mr Howard Denner

• Stretch marks

• As the micro needles puncture your skin and penetrate the dermis, they will emit RF energy as heat You may feel a warm, prickling sensation.

We recommend our Doctor Formula Serum and recovery cream to compliment this procedure

Many very fine needles penetrate the skin momentarily and RF energy flows between needle tips causing precise heating under the skin layers to create new collagen. This avoids heating the top layers of the skin so downtime is minimal and it is safer for darker skin types. You get benefits of both micro needling and radiofrequency energy

• Fine lines and wrinkles

What happens during RF Micro needling treatment?

Silk Pillowcases

A Tale of Saucery by David Abbott.

So, on the night of 24 June the group headed for the deserted airfield Alan in his Ford Zephyr with nodding dog in the back window and Ken and Ray in their rusting Saab There they sat watching the sky as slowly and inevitably the clouds rolled in, and visibility dropped to zero There was only one thing for it: out came the thermos, Typhoo and condensed milk

by Joneth

Strange

Eventually and before it got personal, Ken called for order “Can we get back to the matter in hand, please?” It didn’t take long (two hours a record for the group) to decide on the same place

It’s widely recognised that using a silk pillowcase can help to prevent the dreaded bad hair day look! Silk doesn’t catch on the scales of our hair and is recommended by experts as part of hair Individual, care. hand made pillowcases, in an elegant and neutral shade of ivory. Gift wrapped in tissue paper with a smattering of scented beads makes this the perfect gift for the woman who has everything or just as a treat for yourself ............ because you’re worth it! Just £32.99 including free local delivery helping to make ‘bad hair days’ a thing of the past! Telephone 01263 713804 Joneth.......

There was a knock at the door The rest of the group had arrived: all three of them Alan, a tall, gangly intense lad whose fashion sense extended to corduroy trousers Peter worked in a local hardware store, always wore shades and liked it to be believed he was actually in the SAS. Beryl, the only female in the group, was a petite, wafer thin blonde with a disconcerting tic which made her look as though she was winking at everyone Ken cleared his throat “Good to see you all As usual we are looking at taking part in the annual national Skywatch on 24 June You all know this was when Kenneth Arnold reported seeing nine discs flying over the Cascade Mountains in Washington State The pilot said they were like saucers skipping over water coining the phrase Flying Saucer ” As Ken said, everyone knew that But didn’t stop him saying it Ken was good at facts Last year, he reminded them, they used a nearby disused airfield. “Does everyone feel that it the right place for er, yes, Alan, you want to say something?”

“Do you think Johnny Cash is sincere when he sings about religion? Does he believe?” “Well I don’t know,” said Ken, somewhat bemused At which point the meeting descended into an argument for and against the proposition

distinct sound of boots crunching gravel It grew louder Then, when it seemed to have reached the back of the car, it stopped abruptly Ken rolled down the window “Peter is that you Wot you doing?” The door of the Ford Zephyr flew open, and Peter emerged “Was that you Ken?” At that point the group realized they were substituting one mystery for another although this one appeared a bit too close for comfort Back at the bedsit and with dawn breaking, they puzzled over what they had heard Alan said the old airfield was used by the United States in World War 2 and maybe was haunted by the ghost of an airman seeking a way home? If it was a ghost perhaps it was hoping for a lift back to Kentucky in a flying saucer?

One of the many high points of the rowing season came in the form of the Blakeney Regatta on Sunday 28th August Two eager crews rowed the club’s skiffs Hoi Larntan and Bluejacket out at 7 o’clock in the morning to compete in the annual rowing race It was a perfect day for the event: bright, clear with very little wind. The water looked like a mirror. Rowers took part in good spirits but with a real desire to win The two craft were close together as they sped towards the Point Gradually, however, the Hoi Larntan crew edged ahead and opened a lead before surging over the finishing line to gain a hard fought victory In time honoured manner, the crews exchanged cheers at the end before meeting up to chat and to watch the presentation of the trophy to the winning crew The picture accompanying this article shows the salute of the winning cox A great moment!

Underneath it all is the NHS dental contract, which was established in 2006 Amongst its many faults, one striking issue is the fact that it pays dentists in units of treatment rather than time Different procedures can take more or less time, but this evens out in the grand scheme of things. What doesn't even out is the fact that, with North Norfolk hav ing the oldest demographic in the country, it takes significantly longer on average to treat patients than the contract assumed Our older members of society need dental treatment as much as anyone in par ticular as people are enjoying better dental health, less likely to end up with a full set of false teeth, and therefore needing to continue to see dentists throughout their lives.

With nearly 1000 dentists leaving NHS dentistry last year, and two thirds of dentists in England indicating they are set to reduce their NHS commitment, it ’s clear that a new system is needed now and should be one that prioritises prevention, is patient centred, and reflects modern dental health needs Steffan Aquarone

Whilst it's fair enough that dentists shouldn't be paid for work they don't do, the current arrangements remove any unused 'units' from dentists' contracts This would be fine if they were then reallocated to other practices, but they're not The number of units available overall has gone down steadily and dentists entering new contracts have been incentivised to under estimate how many NHS units they can deliver. Urgent action is needed to tackle the difficult task of unpicking the 2006 contract But there are no signs that this will get the attention of politicians This lack of attention has also meant that dentistry has suf fered since Brexit the UK Government will no longer recognise Euro pean qualifications from 2023, despite nearly a quarter of dentistry before Brexit being provided by dentists carrying European qualifica tions

After a decade of savage cuts to public services, adequate resources must be supplied as a matter of urgency to reverse the alarming decline of NHS dentistry and guarantee its long term sustainability

Demeter is the Greek goddess of harvest and agriculture Her Roman equivalent is Ceres Perhaps where the word “cereal” comes from?

Harvest Time Facts

In the UK, Harvest Festival is traditionally held on the Sunday nearest the harvest moon, the full moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox (on the 22nd or 23rd September)

Earlier versions were pulled by teams of horses, donkeys or mules.

The word harvest comes from the Old English haerfest, meaning Autumn.

Corn dollies are one of the customs of early harvest time In pagan times, people believed that the spirit of the corn lived in the crop so when the crop was harvested, the spirit was left homeless So, the last sheaf of the harvest was made into a “corn dolly ” , which spent the winter in the farmer ’s home and was believed to bring luck for the next harvest

The combine harvester was invented in the US by Hiram Moore in 1834
