A Note from the Editor

Another year gone and a new one to look forward to. How are your resolutions going? With all the excesses of the festive table, not to mention finishing up the leftovers, I quite look forward to a simpler diet in the New Year. The recent mild weather has encouraged me to get out for some exercise and all in all the winter sluggishness is starting to lift. There is much about climate change and changes in the environment in the media at present, and with that in mind, don’t forget about the Big Garden Birdwatch taking place on 28-30th January. It gives us all the opportunity to help monitor the effect of climate change and environmental factors on the wildlife we are most familiar with, the birds in our own gardens. No special equipment needed, and it only takes an hour. For more information go to rspb.org.uk and do your bit for our feathered friends. Whatever you are doing this month, enjoy your January magazine. Wrap up and stay well. Jo – Editor. Here are the deadline dates and publishing dates for the next 3 magazines.

A Cracking Community Christmas Day!

What a cracking festive feast was had at The Venue in Holt on Christmas Day, with 60 people joining together to celebrate in community style! As ever, the day was headed up by Holt Community Café and supported by a wonderful team of volunteers, many of whom had only just met but worked with customary cheerful gusto to deliver the delicious turkey meal with all the trimmings, again sponsored with extraordinary generosity by Allards Butchers of Holt. Great thanks also to Holt Town Council for awarding a grant to cover the cost of the day, to Duncan Baker for delivering our Meals on Wheels for us on the day, and to the many other people who donated goods for the raffle, helped to drive people to the event, cooked and

News from the Venue

What a super Christmas Day we had at the Venue; thank goodness it was able to go ahead! There are more details about it in my other piece but suffice to say it was a great way to finish off the year. Looking ahead, we are now well underway with our new venture, special screenings from the best of classic performances from the Royal Opera House on our big cinema screen, so if you’ve ever fancied going to the Opera or Ballet and never had the chance, you can view some of the finest performances from the best seats with the best angles, right in the comfort of the Venue, and for a fraction of the cost of a trip to the Theatre! We are very fortunate to be given permission to choose the finest of the archived performances to screen, so do take advantage and come along once a month and enjoy a lovely Sunday treat. Making a comeback this year is our February Film Festival, which we are delighted to say includes all feel good movies, something we all need at the moment. Tickets are available in advance, including a full weekend pass, so book yours in now. I’m also thrilled and honoured to announce the renaming of our art gallery to ‘The Anwen and John Hurt Exhibition Space’, and a unique art event ‘A life in Film, Sir John Hurt Exhibition’ that is coinciding with the Festival, and by kind permission of our Patron, Anwen Hurt. We are honoured to host this wonderful tribute to one of the finest actors of our generation, so come along during the Film Festival weekend to view a great and rare exhibition. We have some exciting plans for the further development and refurbishment of the Venue this year, including landscaping outside areas and improving sound and light for the Arts inside the building, which I will keep you all informed about as we move forward. Don’t forget our regular Jazz Club evenings on the first Wednesday of each month, with a great and diverse selection of musicians, and full details of special events and regular user groups can always be found on our website, www.thevenueholt.com Happy New Year to you all! supplied delicious treats or in other ways, helped the day to be a wonderful memory for so many people.

This was the 7th year that the Holt Community Café had hosted Christmas Day for the town, although last year we were forced to deliver the meals, and I am always absolutely blown away by the generosity and thoughtfulness of the people of Holt in ensuring that others, who may not have anyone to celebrate the day with or who struggle with the season, are able to have a super day too. Although we were slightly fewer in number, there was such a lovely atmosphere in the Venue, maybe because we were uncertain whether we would even be able to allow the day to go ahead due to Covid. Thankfully the Government made the announcement, and it was full steam ahead with the cooking and prep, and all who turned up were utterly determined to have a whale of a time! With a quiz, some festive singing, a raffle and the Queen’s speech streamed live on the cinema screen, it was a fun filled and packed day and we all went home stuffed to the gunnels with lovely food and wholeheartedly uplifted. What a super way to finish the year at the Café! As ever, the Holt Community Café will continue to meet in the Venue every Thursday for delicious home cooked food and lovely company, so do please join us if you’ve never been, and we are always delighted to welcome new volunteers if you fancy jumping on board! Many people still seem keen to attend events, so dependent on current government covid advise and restrictions, in place at the time, we will plan to go ahead with the ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ interview with John Jarvis on Wednesday the 19th of January. However please check The Venue website for the most up-to-date information. We will continue to observe sensible precautions and care and, of course, cancel if there is greater concern, not least for John himself. In the meantime, it seems sensible to wait and see how things look a little nearer to the date. Wednesday 19th of January – ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ (MN, MH) – an interview with John Jarvis focusing on John’s life, his experience as a working musician playing in a variety of bands, his love of cinema, and Holt Cinema particularly, as well as reflecting on Holt and Norfolk from a personal perspective. The bar will open from 6.00pm for a prompt 7.00pm start, finishing at 8.00pm-ish. The event will take place in the Main Hall and bar area of The Venue. The event is free, but booking is essential as seating is limited. Donations to The Venue are welcome. People who simply turn-up at the door may not be admitted.

Norfolk pilot scheme helps pregnant women quit smoking Researchers at East Anglia University (UEA) and the University of Cambridge have developed an anonymous text service designed to help mums-to-be quit smoking. MiQuit provides free support, sending tailored advice and information directly to their phones. The results of this pilot being run in Norfolk may help the service be taken up across the country, helping many more people live healthier and happier lives.

from County Councillor Eric Vardy Hello all, I hope you had a wonderful, safe and above all healthy Christmas. I’m sure, like me you’re hoping and praying for this pandemic to go for good.

At this time of the year the cold weather often impacts adversely on our road surfaces. There is a “Pothole Hotline” you can telephone if you come across one…. 0344 300 8020.

E-scooter safety plea from Trading Standards People are being urged to check the law on the use of private e-scooters, and to only buy from reputable suppliers after testing of a number of products on the market found a lack of compliance with UK safety regulations. The sampling project led by the East of England Trading Standards Association is looking at a number of brands after national concerns were raised about electrical safety compliance as well as the illegal on-street use of private scooters. Full testing is still to be completed but Norfolk County Council Trading Standards officers are so concerned about the safe and legal use of e-scooters they are alerting consumers to the preliminary findings of the first batch of e-scooters tested. One scooter was found to be fitted with a plug that didn’t meet UK safety standards as it had no fuse. Overall, three quarters of the first batch of e-scooters tested had incorrect documentation, which includes safety warnings, user instructions and traceability information. The council stressed that there are no safety concerns with either of the government approved scooter models being used in the two official pilots taking place in Norfolk (Beryl in Norwich and Ginger in Great Yarmouth). They remain the safest and only legal way to try an e-scooter on the highway and support the council’s goals to reduce congestion and pollution on shorter journeys.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service A Team of 16 young people in Norfolk are heading for a brighter future after learning new skills with Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service. The young people undertook a 12-week personal development course, at Norwich and Dereham, and their hard work has seen them earn the Prince’s Trust Certificate in Employment, Teamwork and Community Skills, as well as Emergency First Aid at work. The learners also did work experience with local charities. All young people aged between 16 and 25, who are not in work, training or education are eligible to take on the Team challenge and learn new workplace skills to help get them into employment or aid in finding volunteering and training opportunities. Participating does not affect any benefits. Travel costs are reimbursed. The Team programme is delivered from Norwich, Dereham and Kings Lynn. Wills, Families and Inheritance – The Elephant in the Room? 32% of UK adults have not planned to divide their assets equally among their children upon death.

According to a survey conducted by Charles Stanley Wealth Management, 16% of British adults do not plan to divide their assets equally, whereas a further 16% have not decided how they plan to share their wealth.

Of the 16% who have planned to distribute their estate unevenly, the most common reasons for deciding to split their estate unevenly were based on taking into account each child's financial circumstances (thereby gifting a higher share to less wealthier children) and taking into account how well each child looked after them later on in life.

The same survey found that more than a third of UK adults would be upset if they were on the receiving end of an uneven split. It also found that only one in five UK adults said that their relatives had talked openly about how they intended to distribute their estate and that 15% of UK adults do not have or did not leave a will.

Fear of causing a rift between children can result in people not openly discussing their plans, which could cause disputes between children upon death and increase costs to the estate, which will reduce the overall value of the estate. The fear of causing a rift could also result in people not making any plans at all, which may mean that

their estate is not divided how they would have liked after death.

It is therefore essential for individuals to ensure that they have a will in place and to make their family aware of their plans and wishes regarding inheritance during their lifetime.

At Clapham & Collinge, we have a team of specialist private client lawyers who can help you through every stage of the will-drafting process and ensure, insofar as possible, that your estate is divided in accordance with your wishes upon death. We understand that inheritance planning can be a difficult topic for many people. We are sensitive to clients' needs and we aim to provide peace of mind to clients, so that they are safe in the knowledge that their affairs are in order prior to death.

We pride ourselves on providing Wills that give you complete peace of mind and legal assurance that your wishes will be carried out once you are gone so you know your family will be taken care of. Dear friends,

“The snowdrop, in purest white array, first rears its head on Candlemas Day.”

Only the 4th of January and already a few candlemas bells have pushed their heads above the ground in the churchyard to herald the forthcoming feast of Candlemas. Candlemas bells are of course another name for snowdrops and slowly but surely they return to adorn our gardens and the churchyard with the purity of their white petals. They are a visible sign that the cycle of the seasons continues and in the darkness of these winter days they point towards the hope of spring. Yet they have for many centuries been associated with the Feast of Candlemass which is celebrated 40 days after Christmas on Wednesday the 2nd February and recalls the presentation of the Christ-child in the temple in Jerusalem. It was while they were in the temple that Mary’s son was recognised by an old man named Simeon as the Saviour, the light that had come into the world to revealed the light of God’s saving love. Taking the child in his arms Simeon is quoted as saying “..my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.’ Not surprisingly, light is a major theme of Candlemas. Certainly before the reformation and thankfully, now restored to the church’s calendar, candles are lit and blessed to honour Jesus as the Light of the World and people are encouraged, with God’s help, to shine as a light of God’s love in the darkness of the world. A 17th century Anglican churchman and theologian, Mark Frank, preached this about Candlemas. “Light up now your candles, it is Candlemas, become we all burning and shining lights, to do honour to this day, and the blessed armful of it. Let your souls shine bright with grace, your hands with good works; let God see it, and let man see it; so bless we God. Walk we 'as children of the light,' as so many walking lights; and offer we ourselves up like so many holy candles to the Father of Light. “ As the days begin to lengthen and the candlemas bells herald the forthcoming festival of light, what better New Year’s resolution could we have, than to shine as lights of God’s love. Every blessing, Fr. Howard

Arts Forum Evening Review

Dear Jo, What a great way to get to know Chris Moorhouse of The Lighters band at the Arts Forum evening on 15th December. The first part of the evening was an interview conducted by Phil Barrett, Chris gave us insight into how his music career started, playing snippets as he went along. His ability to play the guitar showing his collection of styles and singing was most enjoyable and informative. The second part of the evening was a short concert with Chris, Giselle and Andrew, using music from Chris’s massive repertoire. A most enjoyable evening. Look out for further Arts Forum evenings hosted by Phil Barrett. Anne & Paul Plumstead

Miss Marble Takes a Break is Stage Direct’s Newest Production

Uneasy calm leads to chaos in the Mo-Dell household, with an unexpected, untimely homecoming of their stoic housekeeper, Miss Marble.

Dear Jo, On behalf of the Holt 1960’s Club, may I say a big thank you to all the shops, firms and members, for the lovely array of raffle prizes that we had at our Christmas tea and raffle on 20th December at The Venue. The raffle took 30 minutes to draw, so thank you to everyone. The club meets every Monday from 2pm – 4pm at The Venue. New members are always welcome, just drop in.

Tread the boards and laugh along with the North Norfolk Players!

What are your New Year's resolutions? If 2022 was going to be the year you wanted to learn a new skill, meet some different people and just generally have more fun, then we might have just the thing for you! The North Norfolk Players are a relaxed and friendly group of people who have a lot of fun, drink many cups of tea and work as a team to produce entertaining plays and performances for their audiences. For more information, join them for their AGM at 3.30pm on Sunday 23 January 2022 at The Venue, Holt Community and Arts Centre, Kerridge Way, Holt NR25 6DN.

With the help of a cheeky cockney CCTV man, Melissa hatches a sophisticated plot to entrap her husband George, in coital shenanigans with their temporary housekeeper. Unaware of his wife’s plot; whilst Melissa is out that evening, George embarks on a plot of his own, employing a chef to create a romantic meal for himself and his mistress Meg.

Feeling inspired? You could also come along to their open auditions for an evening of amusing one act plays to be performed in venues around North Norfolk this spring. Auditions take place at 7.30pm on Thursday 27 or 2.00pm on Sunday 30 January 2022 at The Copeman Centre, Hall Street, Briston NR24 2LG

Everyone’s plans are foiled when Meg (the other woman) Overhears Melissa’s plan. Greg, Melissa’s prearranged gigolo/gardener arrives on cue and ends up with a client, but in the confusion of a power cut; exactly who will it be?

The line-up includes the murderous humour of ‘The Poisoner’, and the chance to take on a pivotal role within the infamous Little Grimley Amateur Dramatic Society. The results are bound to be hilarious (and perhaps a tad chaotic, in the fictional village of Grimley!) Within these plays there are a variety of roles available both on stage and off, so there will be something of interest to all. Beginners are welcome, with training and support provided. A small annual membership fee of £10.00 is payable to cover expenses when creating productions. For more information, please contact info@nnplayers.org.uk or telephone Hannah on 01263 860871.

Set to premiere at Sheringham Little Theatre on January 20th and running until the 22nd, Miss Marble Takes a Break will be Stage Direct’s 37th production, and once again it will be an original script written by Nigel Manson who will also take the task of directing.

After the success of the company’s latest original production “If I Were You & Dedicated Sorrowers” presented at The Venue Community and Arts Centre in Holt, the local am dram group is wasting no time and preparing what is set to be a great continuation to the successfully acclaimed play Miss Marble Strikes; Again, presented in 2019 at Sheringham Little Theatre to a sold out auditorium and receiver of fantastic reviews.

Integrating Mental and Physical States – We Need More Awareness of Balance – Mental and Physical Homeostasis

Many people come to my clinic saying ‘I am so anxious! I can’t switch off my thoughts; I just feel so angry; I have to be perfect’, and so on. These symptoms are typically the tip of the iceberg and usually symptomatic of something within the body and the mind that is not right. Left untreated, these symptoms may start to encroach on our physical health as well.

Within my clinic we consider the origin(s), the trigger(s) and the maintenance of these symptoms, that is, we start to develop a psychological formulation to inform treatment. Moreover, we will learn to consider emotions as non-permanent states, making us feel less overwhelmed. We will gain insight into how to stop to tune into our instinct /gut before we react, so that we become more in tune with our inner self. We learn to tune into our bodies more in order to find balance between our mental and physical states. Ultimately, we will start to feel stronger and more in balance within ourselves.

Top Class Service! “Absolutely faultless from start to finish” - Mrs JN

It is important to consider that change can be very difficult and that adapting to change takes time - so small steps - one at a time. I guess that is probably why New Year’s resolutions often do not last long! So be kind to yourself, be patient and if at first you don’t succeed, try, try and try again. Happy New Year.

Please give us a call to discuss how we can get you moving

Soda bread

What can be more comforting on a cold day that a hot bowl of soup and some fresh baked bread? I had a friend round for lunch the other day, having made some soup the night before to use up the last of the Christmas stilton and broccoli, I realized I had no fresh bread. With no time or energy to start kneading and proving I decided to give soda bread a try. What a revelation - fresh, crusty, delicious bread in under an hour. Result!

If you thought baking bread was too long winded and arduous for you, think again, this will change your mind, I guarantee.

Ingredients

Turn your dough out onto a floured surface and knead briefly to bring the dough together (no stretching or pounding), form into a round and flatten slightly.

Place on a floured baking sheet, cut a deep cross in the top of the round, not all the way through. Place in the middle of the oven for about 30 mins, or until golden brown and it sounds hollow when you tap the bottom. Leave to cool on a wire rack. Serve warm with soup, delicious toasted for breakfast or with a good smear of butter and your favourite cheese. Jo – editor

170g wholemeal flour (I used spelt but any will do) 170g plain flour plus extra for dusting 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 290ml buttermilk.

Method

Preheat your oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6 Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl, then make a well in the centre, pour the buttermilk into the well and mix with a fork until you have a soft dough. (If it is a little dry, add a small amount of milk until you have the consistency of a Email. stuartstaxitravel@btinternet.com scone mixture). FRIENDLY & RELIABLE - LOCAL & LONG DISTANCE

A Right Roasting!

January is a time to hunker down, cosy up with snuggly blankets, light the candles and eat comfort food, but that doesn’t mean it has to be unhealthy. I’m always in favour of dishes that make a cook’s work easy, and this one is certainly no exception. Roasting vegetables brings out their best flavours and keeps nutrients viable; it’s also ridiculously easy. I must admit I was sceptical about whether roasting cauliflower would make it as delicious as everyone online said, but oh my, they are so right! There's a world of difference between boiled cauliflower (please don't ever do that) and the sublime sweetness and earthiness of roasted cauliflower. It elevates it up from a side dish to the main event. Serve it up with the creamiest of mustard mash potato and you have a dreamy winter dinner.

Roasted Cauliflower Supper Serves 2 3 large white potatoes, peeled and diced A little cream Butter 2 Heaped teaspoons of wholegrain mustard seasoning 1 medium fresh cauliflower, outer leaves removed Olive oil Himalayan or sea salt Tablespoon of dried Ramson (or your favourite herb) Coconut oil, for frying

Slice the cauliflower carefully into 4 thick steaks and put the coconut oil into a large non-stick frying pan, and heat until hot. Carefully place the cauliflower steaks into the oi and fry to char them slightly on both sides, then serve with the mash.

Carolyn Burn

A huge thank you to all our guests, staff and suppliers who have supported us over the past two years.

We wish you all a very happy New Year, full of fun, friends and freedom. ... from all of us at The Grove

Method

To roast the cauliflower, massage olive oil into it and place in an ovenproof dish. Scatter over the ramsons and a little salt and turn the cauliflower in it to ensure it is covered on all sides. Cover the veg tightly, not allowing the foil to touch the cauli. Place into a preheated oven on 160° for 2 and a half hours. Half an hour before the end of this time, place potatoes in a large pan of salted water and bring to the boil, then simmer until a knife goes through them easily. Drain well and mash with the cream, butter and mustard until creamy then season to taste. email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

Do you view Toads as slimy little creatures that give you the shivers? Or do you recognise them for what they are and what they do. Many toads live in gardens where they eat slugs and other pests and so are very beneficial to gardeners. But they can be very vulnerable. Once a year as Spring approaches, they return to their birth-pond to spawn and often a road near the pond will run across their path. They move soon after dusk when road traffic can be at its worst and visibility poor. At these times, many thousands of toads across Norfolk become traffic casualties. In our vicinity, there are two such ponds, Rookery Pit in Hempstead and Selbrigg Pond in Selbrigg. For some years now, a small band of volunteers has worked at both locations during the migration season (mid-February to early/mid-April), moving toads each evening to safety. In 2021, over 8,000 toads and frogs were saved between the two ponds, so the effort really does pay off! We are always in need of more volunteers, so if anyone from the local area is interested, please consider volunteering. We normally have a kick-off meeting in the Feathers in Holt around now, but last year we used emails and telephones due to the Pandemic and we thought that we ought to do the same this year, thanks to Omicron. Patrols should be able to continue as last year, since it constitutes outdoor exercise with one other person – we patrol in pairs – suitably socially distanced. For more information, please let either myself or Tim know and we can provide more details of what’s involved. It’s not arduous and very satisfying! Our contact details are below and we look forward to hearing from you! For more information, please visit…. http://www.toadwatch.org. Thank you for your support.

Rural Charity Boost from Local Equestrian

businesses and who might be suffering from poor mental health. The day itself and all the preparations have been a lot of hard work, but I had truly wonderful support from friends, family and prize sponsors, and they really made it possible.”

The Rural Mental Health Support charity, YANA (You Are Not Alone), is just over £1500 better off following an Equestrian Charity Day run by local professional training and competition equestrian, Judith Barker (pictured).

In the past Judith has raised money for the World Horse Welfare charity and East Anglian Air Ambulance, and she plans further events in 2022, ‘when the weather gets a little kinder’.

Twenty-two local riders of mixed abilities gathered at Lime Kiln Farm at Thursford in late December, where Judith ran a challenging training day. Riders brought their own horses and were given extensive tips and technical guidance to help improve their techniques, all whilst negotiating Lime Kiln Farm’s Arena Eventing course of jumps. The training, done in small groups, put them through a variety of activities to suit their individual abilities, with riders supporting and encouraging each other throughout the day.

C.A.T.S. (Catch and Treat Strays)

C.A.T.S. would like to express our gratitude to our friends at the DOUGLAS AND JOANNE ANIMAL TRUST for their generous grant. This grant has helped pay a substantial veterinary bill during these difficult times.

Happy New Year from Runners-next-the-Sea

All entry fees generated by Judith for the training were given in full to YANA, together with the proceeds of the day’s raffle, cake sale and coffee stall.

Local running club Runners-next -the-Sea (RntS) would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy 2022 and warmly welcome anyone looking to start or restart their running journey. RntS was formed by Kevin Short (Chairman) and Evette Price (Endurance Coach) in May 2014 and formally became registered with the athletics governing body England Athletics in April 2018. From originally being a club of 25, it has now grown to over 130 members from all over North Norfolk, with members ranging in age from 12 to over 77. The club meet on Monday and Thursday evenings with members often choosing to race at a weekend. During the summer months RntS are extremely grateful to Holkham Estate who allow them to train within their grounds, both within the park and on the beach. During the winter the club train around Wells and Fakenham. Members enjoy taking part in a range of events including Park Run, roads races, cross country events and track races, although there Is no expectation for members to race. RntS pride themselves on supporting the local community and facilitate the annual Wells Carnival fun run, as well as hosting an annual Couch to 5k programme which has been a great success over the years. In November 2022 they plan to open up their annual 5mile (approx.) beach race to non- members. For anyone interested in starting running, please contact Chris Palmer clubsecretary@rnts.co.uk, or visit the RntS website www.rnts.co.uk

In total, £1501.80 was raised, and a clearly delighted Judith Barker said afterwards, “It was great to support a local charity and one that I can relate to. YANA helps people working in rural and agricultural

One good tern… Conservation project benefits birdlife and boathouses

for Wells. The Shannon class Duke of Edinburgh, currently being built at the RNLI’s All-Weather Lifeboat Centre, is the first in England to be part of the charity’s ‘Launch a Memory’ fundraising campaign, carrying the names of 15,000 loved ones put forward by donors to the charity. Alice Skehel, RSPB Little Tern Project Manager, said ‘The initial project was to restore the little tern nesting area that has become overgrown with marram grass. We moved some of the grass back onto the dunes behind the colony area but had some left over. We were aware of the RNLI’s building project at Wells and felt it was a sustainable solution that benefits both lifeboats and little terns for years to come.’

A Norfolk conservation project is helping both little terns and lifeboats, thanks to a partnership between the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

Chris Hardy, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Wells RNLI, said:’ We were planning to plant marram grass in keeping with the local area, with our contractor procuring this from a supplier. However, the RSPB asked us if, rather than disposing of their grass, we would like it for our construction. This helped them reduce waste and saved our charity money, whilst also sourcing local plants. We’re very grateful to Alice and the RSPB for thinking of us.’

The RSPB leads a conservation project to protect little terns at five beaches in Norfolk and north Suffolk. Little terns nest on the ground on sandy and shingle beaches to camouflage their eggs. This autumn, the project required the removal of marram grass which was encroaching on the terns’ nesting site at Eccles. But the grass hasn’t gone to waste instead it’s been replanted as part of the design of a new lifeboat station taking shape along the coast at Wells-next-the-Sea.

Steve Robinson from boathouse designers Studio Four Architects, said: ‘The new station is designed to sit in the wide-open landscape of the outer harbour and beach at Wells. Our design aims to bed the structure into its setting with timber terracing containing native plants including marram grass. These will help protect the site from the waves, absorb surface water run-off, and blend the structure into its landscape.’

The new station, currently under construction at the end of Beach Road, will provide modern facilities including crew and training rooms, a workshop, visitor engagement area and gift shop. It is due for completion in late 2022, in time for delivery of a brand new £2.5m all-weather lifeboat

empty driveway. They then noticed the pothole in front of their house had enlarged, swallowing up their Range Rover.

Joan stumbled downstairs on Christmas Eve and pulled the newspaper out her letterbox. “Crisis. What crisis?” screamed the Daily Depress headline. “They must be on a different planet,” she thought. For a start the turkeys had all gone on strike.

Had they been able to use the car it wouldn’t have mattered because a group of people decided that supergluing themselves to the nearby motorway would solve the world’s climate crisis.

When midnight arrived on New Year’s Eve Joan settled back in her chair, wrapped in blankets and cuddling a hot water bottle, thinking maybe 2022 will be a better year. There was the comforting and reassuring sight of Big Ben. As it struck Midnight, the clanger fell off, resulting in Big Ben heralding in the new year by striking 23 o’clock.

Pigs may fly but now they were deemed too fat to eat. So, no pigs in blankets either. And as she walked round the empty shelves in her local supermarket, she realised that was the least of her worries. But life must go on Joan told herself. So, despite the cost, she forced herself to turn on the gas oven and stick in a nut roast along with some unidentified roadkill and thought herself lucky: many couldn’t eat it anyway. With no dentists available their teeth were falling out.

Crisis? No. It’s just another Winter’s Tale.

Having filed his flight plan he found there were no charging points in Antarctica and all the snow had melted due to global warming. Meantime back at the factory the elves were revolting, having been given only a 1% pay rise. Their union called it “derisory” and instructed them not to load up the sacks. Not that it mattered - all the kid’s presents were stuck in containers somewhere in the China sea. On page 3 more cheerful news - a new Covid variant which could put most of us in hospital. Joan switched on the TV after calculating she could just about afford the electricity so long as she didn’t put the heating on for a week. There was the Minister for Truth and Happiness, beaming at her insanely and telling her: ”There is no crisis. It is just a bump in the road.” She screamed at the telly: “Try telling that to my friends Brian and Mary.” They opened their front door the other day and gazed at their

Holt and District Probus Club have now resumed their monthly meetings. So – December meant their traditional Christmas Lunch meeting at The Feathers in Holt. Which in turn meant turkey with all the usual trimmings and Christmas Pud – all seasoned with lots of good company and cheer. Meetings are still being arranged carefully; the seating arrangements being as well spaced apart as practicable. Chairman John Mangan over coffee and mints said that the Committee hopes to resume having a speaker to the meetings – the January meeting will hear a talk by one of their own members. After that – it rather depends on covid-19 and Boris! Holt and District Probus Club meets at The Feathers in Holt for lunch on the first Thursday each month. A 3-course meal is provided, and this is usually followed by a speaker on a subject of interest. In the past, topics have ranged from submarines through charity service abroad to Gilbert and Sullivan operas! Anyone interested in considering membership should contact the Hon. 2022 New Year’s Fireworks

2022 is off to a spectacular start thanks to a splendid New Year’s firework display at Cromer Pier. A formidable crowd turned out in Cromer to support the first display since January 2020. The astonishing variety of rockets could be seen as far away as Overstrand beach. The fireworks began shooting at about 5:05pm on Saturday 1st January. There were brocade and chrysanthemum style rockets in yellow and white, and also palm, peony, and pistil type rockets in greens, purples, and oranges. Some had two colours or more in the same rocket. Short fuse comet fireworks and roman candles exploded nearer to the pier itself; they lit up the pavilion theatre and the ocean in spectacular and lurid extravagance. The show built up to a stunning climax after about 15 minutes, in which the last rows of rockets exploded near simultaneously to signal the end of the show. The fireworks were once again provided by Titanium Fireworks Ltd and paid for by generous donations by collection on the night. Words by Isaac C-Knight Photos courtesy of Dave Hubba Roberts

Don’t be a Litter Lout

Holly (aged 7) from Briston has a message to everyone. Let us start the new year 2022, by taking our litter home and not dropping it in the wild. Holly collects litter in her local area on a regular basis and usually carries home a huge bag full after only covering a short distance. She is hoping people will be more aware and kinder to our planet and environment in the new year and aims to inspire other children, teenagers, young adults, parents and grandparents to join in and collect litter in their local area. Founded in 2021 by the groundbreaking baroque French violinist, Salomé Rateau, and Purcell School alumni, the ‘brilliant young’ (The Spectator) conductor and harpsichordist Jack Gonzalez – Harding, Ensemble l’éveil puts the audience at the heart of their music making. WEA Wells Branch - onwards and upwards!

The day school will cost £18 and will run from 9.45am until 4.00pm with a one-hour break for lunch. You can enrol online by going to www.wea.org.uk/eastern and entering ‘Wells-next-the-Sea’ in the ‘town/postcode’ box at the top of the page. This will take you to the Wells courses. Click on the ‘view details’ button next to 'An Historical Tour of Norfolk' and then click the ‘Enrol online’ link. Alternatively, you can enrol by phoning 0300 303 3464. For help, advice or further details please contact Annie Whitelaw on 07856 792186 or email anniewhitelaw53@icloud.com. And please remember, these courses are open to everyone. You don't have to be a member of WEA or one of our regulars and anyone claiming income related benefits can attend for free.

Following the success of our November course, and assuming that no new restrictions are introduced beforehand, WEA Wells branch will be running another day school in Wells Maltings on Saturday 29th January. Not only will the venue be the same, but the tutor will be too, albeit covering a very different subject, namely 'An Historical Tour of Norfolk from the 17th to 20th century'. From gentlewoman Celia Fiennes' accounts of her excursions in the late 1600s, via Daniel Defoe's best-selling book 'Tours Through the Whole Island of Great Britain' in the 1720s, to the enormously popular 20th century 'King's England Guides' of Arthur Mee, this course charts more than 300 years of change in the landscape and settlements of Norfolk. Combining the original observations and recommendations of travellers to the area with a wealth of period paintings and engravings, vintage postcards and modern photographs, this will be a fascinating and unusual perspective on the history of our county. The day school will be held in the Clore Studio in Wells Maltings where there will be plenty of space for social distancing and in-house catering available. It is as Covid secure as any public building can be and, although face coverings are not currently obligatory in the Maltings, we do recommend that masks are worn.

The North Norfolk Veterans Hub

As you can see, we are an active group who also believe in helping others, Christmas 2021 and for the second year running the North Norfolk Veterans Hub have worked with the Salvation Army in Sheringham on their Toys and Tins appeal. The Hub raised over £160.00 through Toys and tins donations and the Outside the Wire Charity contributed £100.00 in Tesco Vouchers. Rod and Steve went to Tesco in Sheringham with a shopping list from the Salvation Army and were overjoyed when the Tesco Manager Nick also contributed a further £100.00 of items for donation to the project. In total £360.00 worth of goods were delivered to the Salvation Army HQ, where it was gratefully received. If you are a Military Veteran living in North Norfolk and like the sound of our friendship group and wish to join us, please check out our page on Facebook - the North Norfolk Veterans Group. Alternatively, simply come to one of our meetings on a Thursday evening at 1900hrs for a brew and lashings of banter. Always great to meet Veterans, hope to see you there.

The North Norfolk Veterans Hub based in Sheringham meets weekly in the Sheringham Shed in Wyndham Street. The meetings, every Thursday start at 1900hrs and go on till 2100hrs. During the meetings tea and coffee is North Norfolk Bunker Walk available along with the opportunity for ex-Forces Veterans to get together in an atmosphere which promotes well being and comradeship. A veteran is a very special person, they have served their country yet, in most cases, when they leave the Military, they find it somewhat difficult to relate to their new civilian surroundings, this feeling can lead to individuals feeling isolated or remote and frustrated. The North Norfolk Veterans Hub was set up with the help of the Outside the Wire Charity, they underwrite our HQ footprint at the Sheringham Shed whilst providing help advice and guidance for any Veteran who needs it or indeed confidential counselling. Our main aim is to provide the Veteran with a safe place where they can speak their mind, share experiences and basically be comfortable with their mates, knowing that they will not be judged. Set up by Rod a Royal Marine Veteran and Steve a Royal Air Force Veteran the North Norfolk Veterans Hub regularly arranges team activities. These include range mornings at the Holt Air Rifle range, a military walk on the North Norfolk Coast, visiting defence bunkers and dummy airfields from WW2. A trip to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford, the Norfolk Tank Museum and the RAF Marham Aviation Heritage Centre. We have also undertaken pilgrimage tours to the Battlefields of France at the Somme and Belgium in Ypres, where the team laid a Veterans wreath at the Menin Gate.

Hayes + Storr expand team in time for major changes in family law

Hayes + Storr Solicitors have announced two new appointments to boost their family department which sees the long-established law firm continue to grow at a time of major change for family law.

West End_Layout 1 31/01/2020 19:55and Page 1 qualified Emma George, will work alongside senior family Solicitors, Zuzanna Pogorzelska newly

solicitor Maria Endall and director Rob Colwell to bolster the family department in what has been a tumultuous year for families up and down the UK.

Director and head of the family Pictured from left to right: Maria Endall, Zuzanna department, Rob Colwell said: “There is Pogorzelska, Emma George and Rob Colwell little doubt the lockdowns have been extremely challenging, and sadly the pressure pushed many families to breaking point. The pandemic has changed everything, and the legal sector is no exception. The pace in which reforms are being made has increased rapidly.

01263 478658 “Family law has undergone a massive overhaul, and it looks as though the changes are here to stay. Remote hearings and the online divorce 07900 370701petition portal have enabled family law to operate throughout the pandemic. The new no fault divorce laws are imminent, which means the whole process for divorcing couples will become a lot more straightforward.” The ‘no fault divorce’ law is due to take effect in England and Wales in April 2022, which means that couples no longer need to apportion blame to get divorced. This is seen by many in the legal sector as being the most important element of the new laws.

A Cameo of Evening

Hidden in the darkening wood, a vixen screams her intentions of attracting a mate. In the churchyard, a barn owl spots a vole in the long grass, and silently drops in for supper.

Plumes of scented wood smoke, teased by a playful breeze, chase each other across the rooftops of cottages scattered alongside the winding lanes. Newly lit candles, fluttering in the windows, mirror the pale stars taking their places in the deepening velvet sky. An ancient oak tree that guards the village green, cradles the new moon in its long bare branches. Close by, in the Blacksmiths cottage, a baby cries. The night listens; a mother sighs. Donation of £665,000 from Cromer Community and Hospital Friends

to them that we not only achieved our target, but exceeded it within eighteen months, even with Covid restrictions in place for most of that time. Our sincere thanks to all our amazing supporters!"

A new cancer unit at Cromer Hospital has benefitted from a donation of £665,000 to fund equipment thanks to the Cromer Community and Hospital Friends.

The £4.85million cancer centre, funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and the Norfolk & Norwich Hospitals Charity, will bring treatment and support services closer to home for thousands of people. It has been built as part of the response to predictions, by the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, that demand for local cancer services could increase by more than 200 per cent over ten years.

A range of equipment has been purchased for the North Norfolk Macmillan Centre, including Prostate Biopsy equipment, furniture and a state-of-the-art point of care testing blood analyser. The centre, which opened in September this year, provides chemotherapy treatment, space for outpatient appointments and minor surgery, plus a Macmillan information and support centre, helping people to navigate the practical, emotional and financial challenges that can arise following a cancer diagnosis.

David White, NNUH Chairman, says: “We commend the outstanding efforts of the Friends who have worked tirelessly to support us over the years and especially with such a generous donation for the new centre. The money raised will benefit thousands of cancer patients over the coming years from North Norfolk and the surrounding area.”

Shirley Davies, Chair of the Cromer Community and Hospital Friends, says: "As a small charity run by volunteers we were daunted by the task of raising half a million pounds - our biggest project by far! However, we soon realised that the community was really behind us, and it is thanks

Katy's Midas Touch at Gala

North Norfolk Viking Swimmers Katy Coleman and Ruby Tracey are the latest to qualify for the County Championships when Katy won a hat-trick of gold medals and a silver. Ruby achieved two bronze medals at the same, final qualifying gala at the UEA. just before Christmas. In the 100m butterfly Katy came back from behind as at the first 25m she was in fourth position. Demonstrating diligence and tenacity she was in first place at the final turn. However she was pushed all the way over the final 25m by Millie Harris of Wisbeach but Katy was not going to relinquish the lead she had fought so hard for; finishing a split second ahead in 1:12.38. to take the gold.

Her second gold came in the 100m freestyle when she ironically defeated a field of 100 with her 1:04.31 and then in the 50m freestyle it was gold again in 29.16. defeating no fewer than 131 swimmers.

New Judo Club in North Norfolk

and participation accessible for all – if local businesses are interested in supporting us then please do get in touch! northnorfolkjudo@gmail.com or visit our website www.northnorfolkjudo.com

North Norfolk Judo Club opened its doors for new members on September 16th at Alderman Peel High School, Wells-next-the-Sea, offering classes for ages 5 up to adults.

So, what are you waiting for? Come along and give it a throw! Claire Lish, North Norfolk Judo Club

Regular Coach Matt Lish is a retired Paramedic, 2nd Dan, and former Chairman of St Albans Judo Club.

Visiting Coaches are Thomas Lish 3rd Dan, Commonwealth Youth Champion, British Championships u21 Silver Medallist and GB Squad member, and his brother Paddy Lish, 2nd Dan, British Schools Champions and Dutch International Champion.

Since opening we have already secured our first National Medal, Sensei Tom secured the Gold at the British Judo Council National Championships last weekend and our ambition is to take a competition squad of our new members to compete within 2 years of opening our doors!

Judo is an excellent activity for young kids because it builds healthy and strong muscles early on, improves their cardio, and lowers their cholesterol. It is also a sport that builds discipline, focus and resilience.

We train on Thursday nights from 5.30pm (details on our Facebook page), and due to the popularity of our kid’s sessions are actively recruiting adult beginners or returners to come and join us! North Norfolk Judo is a community (not for Profit) club, and we are also looking for local sponsorship towards mats and to make competition

Rowing Into 2022 With Blakeney Rowing Club

After the briefest of breaks for Christmas and New Year festivities, members of Blakeney Rowing Club are again organising outings from Barton Turf on The Norfolk Broads. The milder weather at the time of writing has encouraged many experienced and trial rowers to enjoy a morning on the water exercising and socialising amongst scenery and wild life. The picture accompanying this article gives a good idea of the setting for these outings. You can see many similar pictures on the club website at crablakeney.wordpress.co. Viewing these may whet your appetite for the adventure and fun of rowing.

The club’s two skiffs – Hoi Larntan and Bluejacket – are beautifully maintained by club members in the Bayfield Brecks workshop near Holt. Indeed, club activities, both on and off the water, are inclusive and highly enjoyable. Come along, talk to rowers, and discover this for yourselves. If you want to increase your range of activities as 2022 progresses, why not try the sport of skiff rowing? There is no obligation to compete in the races which the club often enters. Social rowing is a definite option. If you want to know more, contact club captain Humphrey at hborgnis@icloud.com to arrange a trial row. You will be looked after, guided and coached. Safety is paramount. There will be three dates, over the course of the next year, which will be given over entirely to the induction of beginners and returning rowers. You can keep up with the club’s activities on Instagram and on Facebook. Hope to see you soon. Happy 2022! Barry Howes.

Career con man Roy (Ian McKellen) sets his sights on his latest mark: recently widowed Betty (Helen Mirren), worth millions. And he means to take it all. But as the two draw closer, what should have been another simple swindle takes on the ultimate stakes. It’s widely recognised that using a silk pillowcase can help to prevent the dreaded bad hair day look! Silk doesn’t catch on the scales of our hair and is recommended by experts as part of hair care. Individual, hand made pillowcases, in an elegant and neutral shade of ivory. Gift wrapped in tissue paper with a smattering of scented beads makes this the perfect gift for the woman who has everything or just as a treat for yourself ............ because you’re worth it!

Weybourne WI Christmas Party with Cliff...as if

There was a festive atmosphere at the village hall on Wednesday afternoon, 1st December, when 35 members of Weybourne WI met for the Christmas Party. Celia Howe, President, began by welcoming everyone, including two new members and Coral Batchelor, our WI Adviser. Jean Benham was thanked for the beautiful decorations she had made for each table. Members were reminded to consider the new resolutions for 2022, in preparation for a vote in January. A charity Christmas walk is to be held on 7th December, followed by refreshments. Proceeds to be donated to Nelson’s Journey. Nominations for a new charity are to be made at the next meeting. Our entertainment for the afternoon was provided by Will Chandler from Overstrand, performing as ‘Cliff…. as if’. Will sang a selection of Cliff Richard’s hits and members joined in with great enthusiasm. In between the songs, Will chatted about his career and told some jokes. During the break we enjoyed a delicious tea, comprising various cakes and savoury items which had been donated by members. The raffle was well supported and there were numerous prizes. Proceeds were donated to our charity. A vote of thanks was given to Will by Sandy Bailey. All agreed it had been an excellent start to the festive season.

Privacy in family law proceedings By Maria Endall, Family Solicitor, Hayes + Storr It is important for anyone involved in family law proceedings, whether in relation to marriage breakdown (except defended divorces, which are held in open court), child arrangements or domestic abuse to understand that such proceedings are held in private and that the parties’ involvement in these proceedings must be kept confidential to protect the privacy of the parties and any children involved. Court orders in respect of child arrangements come with a very clear warning about the confidentiality of proceedings, that is: that the parties involved are not to be publicly disclosed without the permission of the court.

Publicly disclosing the names of the parties or any papers from family proceedings to people or organisations outside those proceedings could amount to contempt of court. The consequences of which are extremely serious and include being fined, having your assets seized or even imprisonment for up to two years. The question of whether a disgruntled party could use their right to freedom of expression to expose details of the proceedings has recently been considered by the High Court. In this case the father posted comments on social media and displayed references on his car about his dissatisfaction with the judicial process. He also made threatening and abusive comments about the children’s mother, the children’s guardian, the social worker, and trial judge. The children’s guardian applied to the court for

an injunction to stop him, not only because she felt it was harassment and vilification of her, but also because what he was doing made it obvious that his children had been involved in private Children Act proceedings.

In this case, the court had to balance the father’s right to freedom of expression against the guardian’s and children’s rights to respect for private and family life. The judge came down in favour of the guardian’s and children’s rights over the father’s. Whilst acknowledging the importance of ensuring parents involved in such proceedings can voice their grievances, the judge held that this did not extend to them making untrue, offensive, or derogatory comments about those involved in the proceedings.

The injunction was made against the father and the case was referred to the Attorney General for consideration of whether his conduct amounted to contempt of court by way of interference with the administration of justice.

It is important for parties in family proceedings to be aware, therefore, of the importance of not sharing or posting online, or in any other way, information, or material regarding any family law proceedings. Furthermore, even if the names of the parties or children are not mentioned, it may still be obvious from who is sharing the material, who those parties and children are, and therefore, fall foul of the requirement to keep such details confidential.

If you are experiencing unacceptable behaviour from a former partner, there is legal action you can take to stop them. A non-molestation order can be used to prevent your former partner from doing certain things, like physically assaulting you, harassing you, or coming near your home or place of work. It can cover a wide variety of actions, such as unwanted text messages and comments on social media.

If information has been publicly disclosed which makes your children’s involvement in family court proceedings obvious, an application for contempt can be made, which may result in the perpetrators conduct being treated as interfering with the course of justice.
