Turf cutting event marks start of hospital expansion at Cromer

Hospital and charity representatives have gathered to mark the start of work on a state-of-the-art cancer care and support centre at Cromer and District Hospital. They were joined by Norwich-based firm Pentaco Construction Ltd which won the contract for the work, which will see the refurbishment and extension of the Davison Unit, a disused ward at the hospital.

The North Norfolk Macmillan Centre is being funded and built in partnership between Macmillan Cancer Support, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Norfolk & Norwich Hospitals Charity. The building work on the ÂŁ4.85million project is expected to take around a year, with the new centre enabling patients with cancer to access treatment and support closer to home. The centre will include: • Six chemotherapy treatment chairs with capacity to treat up to 36 patients a day. • Three new clinic rooms and two new minor procedure rooms, creating an additional 10,000 outpatient appointments annually and space for new cancer diagnostics, including prostate biopsy. • A Macmillan cancer information and support centre. • The new unit will also free up space in the main Cromer Hospital building to deliver an extra 600 surgical procedures in dermatology, urology, vascular surgery and pain management. Jo Haywood, chair of Macmillan’s North Norfolk Fundraising Committee, said: “It’s wonderful to see building work progressing and this will make such a difference to cancer patients living in North Norfolk who are currently travelling to Norwich for their treatment. “Cromer Hospital was originally built using public donations so there’s a great parallel there between what happened then and the current work. This means so much to the people of North Norfolk.â€? Sam Higginson, Chief Executive of NNUH said: “This is an important step in delivering extra services at Cromer as part of our mission to deliver first class treatments to the population in North Norfolk and further afield. We are delighted to see the work get underway providing additional capacity to meet the needs of an older, rural patient group.â€? The Holt Chronicle is published by Rose Villa Publications Ltd. County Councillor News

conversation with a neighbour this morning I realised how confusing the news reports can be – so after re-thinking the conversation I checked on the matter we had discussed and rang back with the correct update – something so simple but meant such a lot to her that I was humbled.)

from County Councillor Dr Marie Strong Wells Division Dear All,

marie.strong@norfolk.gov.uk; 07920 286 597

I hope the following information is useful including as it does websites which are updated – vital with the situation we face where restrictions are eased and returned. Worse still is that most if not all of the restrictions/ regulations/advice/guidance (fill in any other descriptors you have heard) are subject to interpretation. There is one ‘regulation’ which the scientists advising the government have stuck by – and which I and I think many of our residents will applaud – the two meter social distancing rule.

Two Metre Social Distancing Rule – Following a review, the Prime Minister has set out that where it is not possible to stay two metres apart, guidance will allow people to keep a social distance of ‘one metre plus’. This means staying one metre apart, plus mitigations which reduce the risk of transmission. NB. People should continue to stay two metres away from others whereever possible - the new “one metre plus” rule does not invalidate this original advice. Hopefully the statements ‘where it is not possible’ and ‘where ever possible’ are spelt out in the Government’s website: GOV.UK. Coronarvirus (Corvid-19) – where you can find information on coronarvirus including guidance, support and announcements. Coronavirus Information and Links from NCC – other updated sources include www.nhs.uk/coronavirus and Norfolk County Council website keying in coronavirus. Face masks mandatory at NHS Hospitals - The Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) has announced that all staff in hospitals in England have been provided with surgical masks with expectation to wear. Members of the public are strongly urged when attending hospital to wear a face covering - if not a face mask will be provided in emergencies. (I cannot imagine anyone will argue with this directive even though problems are anticipated regarding the directive as to masks in shops.) Helping others: I know how much help you are all giving to your neighbours so forgive me for suggesting you might make a call or drop off a copy of information which you read and believe could be useful to someone else. News from The Venue

What a strange season we have been through. I am pleased to say that the Venue has survived the Covid crisis thus far, and we are poised to open our doors again by the 2nd week of September, all being well. We have not come through entirely unscathed however, with a number of our user groups being adversely affected and unable to return to the centre, which is a great loss. We hope that as the time goes on and it becomes safer for their older demographic users to come back, we will see them enjoying our facilities again. With safety at the forefront of our minds, we have been through the lengthy process of risk assessment and have a robust policy and measures in place to ensure the safety of anyone wishing to use the centre. Details of this can be seen on our website, www.thevenueholt.com. These include the purchase of a cold fogging antibacterial machine, enabling us to quickly and effectively sanitise rooms and equipment in between groups at the centre…particularly important for our popular exercise groups, all of whom are keen to be up and running again as soon as possible. With the health of the Nation in the spotlight it is perhaps even more important to get out and exercise safely, and we have a range of classes on offer, from Line Dancing, through Pilates to Zumba! All our classes are affordable, social, and fun, run by accredited and friendly experts who can safely put you through your paces. New members are always welcome, so do come and get fitter with us! We hope to have our popular Bingo evenings up and running again in October…..keep and eye out in the Chronicle and on our advertising boards for exact dates, and our Arts programme will resume, with new art classes and exhibitions scheduled in for the Autumn. The Community Café will be email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

Now to Good News: Some Norfolk Libraries are re-opening – NCC’s Health and Safety Teams are putting together measures to ensure libraries can open to the public with minimal risk to staff and visitors. Work including layout changes and training for all library staff to keep risk to a minimum will continue over the coming weeks. Details of locations, services offered and opening dates of the library branches are to be found on the NCC website. (And I am told that conversations will be taking place as to how the mobile libraries can be made safe.) Digital Devices for disadvantaged children - We have now taken receipt of approximately 1800 devices for Norfolk’s disadvantaged children which we believe will be sufficient to cater for those without adequate equipment. Distribution should be now under way. Recycling Centres: The main Recycling Centres and now open albeit with certain caveats to accommodate safety regulations. For uptodate information, detailed safety instructions and guidance on using the recycling centres during Covid-19 isit www.norfolk.gov.uk/recyclingupdates. Compost Bins: Cut price to Norfolk residents - 220 litre compost bins for £10, buy one get one half price – go to www.getcomposting.com or email customer.care@getcomposting.com. Spare Time: What have I been doing in my spare time? Working my way through our bookcases and cupboards. One real gem I rediscovered is ‘Sucking Eggs’ by Patricia Nicol. Written as England toppled into recession and making comparison with the prudence required during and after WW2 very similar to lives being led today including the light-hearted manner which enabled people to cope, as they (we?) are doing today. (Chato & Windus 2009 ISBN 9780701182403. (Several boxes of books now waiting for Felbrigg Hall’s book shop to re-open. Similar boxes waiting for charity shops to re-open although Mike keeps reclaiming items. Upwards and onwards

operational again from Thursday 10th September and is looking to increase its programme within the Centre this year. Our Cinema is opening its doors with an increased number of showings from September, with some great titles being shown both old and new. With our large Hall, we can safely operate Cinema within the Centre, giving the town affordable and fun nights out. Included in the new programme is a once a month Royal Opera House Opera and Ballet screening. All these events will have our newly refurbished and stocked bar open before performances, and with our comfortable seating and even more space and leg room, we are undoubtedly the most comfortable Cinema in the area. As ever, we continue to improve the maintenance and refurbishment of the Centre for the benefit of all, with new ambient lighting in the Hall, improved fire safety measures and electrical updates, and painting and decorating being undertaken during lockdown. The Venue is a superb and affordable place to hold your private party or wedding, and bookings have already been taken well into 2021. Do pop in from September and check out the facility if you are considering an event…you will be amazed at just how affordable this quality venue is. We are a registered Charity and rely on our hiring and donations to keep us going, and our incredible volunteer workforce to help us to keep this vital facility open for the Town. If you would like to get involved, do email us on holtcommunitycentre@gmail.com for more information. We are a great family of volunteers and would love to welcome you! Keep safe and well and we look forward to seeing you in September when we reopen. Carolyn Burn, Chairperson.

County Councillor News

from County Councillor Sarah Butikofer sarah.butikofer.cllr@norfolk.gov.uk or 07968 897235

When I last wrote in January I could never have imagined what a turn of events was just around the corner, none of us could. The last few months have been by turn challenging and inspiring, and have truly shown us once again how lucky we are to live, here in North Norfolk. I write for this one episode not as a County Councillor but as the Leader of North Norfolk District Council. Firstly my heartfelt condolences go out to all the families and friends of those who have lost their lives to Covid-19, it is truly a dreadful disease that is indiscriminate in those it takes from us. Whilst remembering those people, we also need to send our hugely grateful thanks to all our residents, local community groups, NHS Staff and key workers who stepped up to the plate and worked around the clock to protect others, and to save lives over these last months. North Norfolk has thankfully seen a low level of COVID infections - 219 cases, meaning 210 cases per 100,000 population and placing us 291st out of 315 local authority areas (1 being high and 315 being low) in England. There will be many contributing factors to this figure including our rurality, low population density, lack of an acute hospital in the District - but equally with one of the oldest population profiles in the country we could have seen very different outcomes as national data suggests vulnerability to COVID increases significantly with age. In this respect I believe the Council has supported our residents, communities and businesses very well over the past 18 weeks and continues to do so in seeking to control and manage the spread of the virus locally through the social distancing measures we have put in place ourselves in our towns, seafront and Broads tourist areas. Whilst I know the Council does not always get everything right we are committed to doing our very best for our local residents. I could not be prouder of how the team at NNDC have responded to the crisis. Staff have all gone above and beyond for many weeks and especially so at the height of the crisis, designing response systems, delivering new services and helping out on the ground in the community. Our emergency helpline responded to

thousands of calls, from those concerned about food supplies and prescription delivery, to those helping with benefits claims and business grants. As we move into the recovery phase we know there is a long road ahead, especially when so much of our local economy is reliant on tourism. We know that many residents remain concerned about the influx of our guests to our area, but the Council remains committed to your protection, and we are doing all we can to help, both tourism businesses and the high street to reopen safely. In the last week we have been able to source special equipment which we are now deploying to ‘fog’ public conveniences and children’s play areas. Our hand sanitisers have now been in place for a couple of weeks together with other measures. For now I would like to end with a final thanks to everyone for the part they have played in helping to keep us as safe as possible thus far. Please remain vigilant careful and considerate of the concerns of others as we move forwards. Have a safe summer and I look forward to writing to you about happier times again soon.

Thank You

Dear Jo, I wonder if you might consider dedicating a section of your correspondence to readers' accounts of acts of kindness during the current plague. My own recent experience involved one of the staff at our local post office in Budgen's. My wife and I are both of the age at which the Government wishes us to isolate ourselves, and she is disabled. This gentleman put himself out on our - and especially her - behalf, and I want publicly to express our thanks. It would be good to read other people's experiences of similar kindnesses.

So much more than just a supermarket

Thank You

Dear Jo, I would like to thank everyone who attended the funeral of my darling husband, Keith Morley, at the Cromer Crematorium. Thank you for your generous donations which totaled £700 and will be shared between Cancer Research and The Alzheimer’s Society. Keith was fond of shooting and he hoped he would not come back as a pheasant! Janice Morley.

Since the fire on the 20th June, there have been many comments made about the loss of Budgens of Holt, most of them positive but one of our favourites is that it was ‘so much more than just a supermarket‘. The heart of the store was of course the staff who worked there, many of whom have been employed for a good number of years. The last time the Team were mentioned in this publication was when they presented a cheque to the Macmilllan Cancer Support Group (north Norfolk) for £19,855.73 the amount the Staff and customers had raised for the charity of the year in 2019. Plans are underway for both the longer term solution and also a short Of course it wasn’t just the Team who made the store so special, the term option, more of this will be communicated when the plans have brilliant local suppliers also made sure the shelves were stocked with been finalised. We are grateful for the ongoing support of the interesting produce. It was the combination of the Staff and all the community in Holt. suppliers, who worked tirelessly throughout the lockdown period, who made sure the customers of Budgens of Holt were served with essential product. What was particularly cruel about the fire is that it came after the start of the relaxing of the lockdown period and we were all about to embark on the ‘new normal’. Following the fire we have quickly been able to re-open the Post office and this happened within 5 days. We have been able to offer most of the services we had previously, and we will shortly be hoping to add the facility of renewing your passport and we are awaiting the arrival of a new post box! Jess, Michelle, Lorraine and Aiden have been pleased to welcome our customers in the new location situated at Bakers and Larners. The home delivery service started up a week after the fire and this is operated from within Budgens of Aylsham. Beverley and Mike, both of whom are well known to our regular customers have started to work from Aylsham and can be contacted on 01263 731274 or email admin@budgensaylsham.co.uk. The Holt Chronicle August 2020

It’s not your fault… anymore. By Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr

August is a barren month for the legal writer. It is also the ‘silly season’ when doubtful legal cases receive greater prominence than they deserve in the press. Add to that Covid-19 and there is much less than usual to write about this year. The Law Society Gazette has shrunk in size to smaller than the many parish magazines, with a lot of articles on lawyers’ mental health, working from home and the bleak prospects for the younger generation of lawyers. The rollercoaster of the Coronavirus emotions and mood swings has been labelled the ‘Coronacoaster’, and has affected even the most confident and balanced people. Lockdown has brought financial and personal pressures, as well as more thinking-time and enforced ‘spending time with the family’. There have been increased levels of domestic violence across the social-spectrum. This in turn has lead to many more divorce enquiries. My matrimonial partner Rob Colwell is very busy. One very positive development, in keeping with the mood of the times (what the Germans call the ‘zeitgeist’), is the move towards no-fault divorce. Much of my work relates to the intergenerational-dynamics of families, rather than spousal-strife. Although I am not a divorce lawyer, parents’ concerns for their children’s fragile marriages are a main focus when succession-planning. The “no fault divorce” is to become law after decades of campaigning by lawyers and family justice professionals. So it is very good news that couples will soon be able divorce without having to find fault with one another. The requirement for couples to apportion blame is so firmly established that it can permeate every aspect of a separation, even when things started out amicably. Children are inevitably drawn into the blame game, with cruel long-term effects. Fault-based divorce law is as much of the 19th Century as women being unable to own property. Now, instead of finding blame, one spouse can apply for a divorce by making a statement of ‘irretrievable breakdown’ of marriage. There will be a new minimum timeframe of six months from the application stage to the granting of a divorce, giving couples time to reflect and even change their minds. If reconciliation is not possible, there will be enough time to agree practical arrangements, most importantly for their children. This must be so much better for the whole family and will not estrange grandparents from their former son-in-law or daughter-in-law. At present, couples seeking a divorce in England and Wales must blame the other for the marriage breakdown. None of the grounds are conducive to future family happiness: adultery, unreasonable behaviour or, the rather Victorian, desertion. Otherwise there must be a minimum of two years separation with consent, or 5 years’ separation, if such consent is withheld. Now the Bill has received Royal Assent, it has become an Act of Parliament. It is likely to happen in 2021, once changes to systems and procedures have been implemented. Redcurrant & Red Onion Relish

Well during lockdown everybody started their own vegetable gardens and of course we had a little head start here at the Grove. The Senior Partners John and Ann enjoyed the balmy early summer weather and the fruit and vegetable section have never looked so good. In particular the redcurrants have had a sterling year, so it looks like this redcurrant and red onion relish will be a firm favourite for the rest of the year! We are now open for our lovely hand-made, stone-baked pizzas on the lawn, every evening as long as the weather is good, but booking is essential and we are really, really busy at the moment! 01263 512412 to reserve your table (we are taking bookings a week in advance at the moment) both for pizza and our fabulous a la carte. Ingredients 2 medium small red onions, chopped 1 red pepper, seeded and chopped

2 tsp olive oil 2 red chillies, seeded and chopped 2 large garlic cloves, chopped 1 knob fresh ginger, chopped 200ml red wine vinegar 140g muscovado or demerara sugar 1 tsp five-spice powder 200g redcurrants, stripped from stalks

Method Fry the onions with the red pepper and the oil, 5-8 mins over a high heat. Remove from the pan and set aside. Put half the vinegar, the chilli, garlic and ginger into the same pan. Bring to the boil then simmer for 2-3 mins, then add the onions and pepper plus the remaining vinegar, all the sugar, spice and 1 tsp salt. Bring to the boil then bubble away for about 5 mins until thickened.

Add redcurrants and simmer for about 5 mins more, or until they have burst, but still have some shape and the liquid is syrupy. Remove and pour into a large heatproof jar; cover and seal while hot.

Harry Hollins, 7, has taken on The Million Step Challenge for DiabetesUK to raise money towards supporting people with diabetes. When his mum was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in September 2019 Harry took it all in his stride and familiarised himself with what to do to help his mum when having a hypoglycaemic episode, how to test blood glucose and how to inject insulin, along with practice calls on how to call an ambulance in an emergency. When Harry saw an advertisement for The Million Step Challenge, he was eager to do all he could to raise money to help others with diabetes. From July 1st September 31st Harry has been challenged to take 1 million steps. He has been walking, biking, swimming.... anything to help reach his goal! He has also raised over £350! He’s an amazing, caring lad, who is doing the diabetic community, and his family, very proud!

Living with Covid 19

As 2020 dawned no one could have foreseen what this year was going to hold in store for us. It will now certainly go down in history as a year which changed the world. Covid-19 has shaken the foundations of our very existence and threatened our way of life. No-one is immune and no-one is untouched by the consequences of this undiscriminating virus that has spread around the world. In these unprecedented times every one of us has had to make changes and adapt to a new way of living. Sadly, loved ones have died, others have been seriously ill, family have been separated, jobs have been lost and business have closed. The inequalities in our society have been laid bare, with the poor and the most vulnerable paying a heavy price. Social distancing and face masks have fast become an accepted norm. Only now are we emerging from lock down and isolation to a brave new world, yet the threat of the re-emergence of the deadly virus hangs over us all. Covid 19 is here to stay and the sooner the scientists can find a vaccine the sooner we can return to some form of normality. But of course, things will never quite be the same again. We have lost a great deal and the speed of the change that was inevitable has increased over these past few months. So, perhaps we have to learn to live differently. Over the past months I have been struck by how people in communities have rallied round and looked out for each other. This has certainly been true in this parish. Social media groups on facebook, community groups such as the Holt Youth Project, the Tree House Café, the Churches, Holt & District Dementia Support, Love Holt, the Town Council, and good neighbours have all played their part in caring for others and building a sense of community. I sincerely hope we can continue to build on the neighbourliness and good will that is so prevalent when times are hard. I also hope we might learn to live more locally and support those who are trying to create employment for local people. We also need to continue to challenge the injustices in our society and provide for those who are in need and work together for the common good. Also at the beginning of the lockdown many people found time to stop and stare, to appreciate the world around them and reconnect with the wonderful world of nature. There is a danger that as our lives become busy again we forget the joy and peace we found in a quieter world and the sense of wonder at the life around us. Surely, there is a danger that as we rush to get back to normal life, whatever that may now be, we will miss this opportunity to press the reset button. Everything does not have to return to how it was before, and perhaps it maybe better if some things don’t. Since March we all have had opportunity to reflect on what really matters and the things that are important to us. Living with Covid 19 has meant we have had to reassess how we live with one another and with the planet which we inhabit. Hopefully, in learning to live with this pandemic we www.holtchronicle.co.uk

might learn to live better. Here’s hoping and praying.

DUNCAN BAKER MP JULY NEWSLETTER

Dear all, The past few months have been a very challenging time. As well as Covid-19, the devastating fire at Budgens in Holt has created problems for those who live and shop in the town. I’ve been working closely with local stakeholders to make sure we support the most vulnerable, and local suppliers who depended on Budgens for much of their business. As a result of campaigning by the Norfolk MPs, Ofgem and National Grid have now been commissioned to look into ways to support the growth of our offshore wind industry without compromising the ecology and beauty of our natural landscape. A report on the available options is expected in October. The government’s financial support package has been a lifeline to many individuals and businesses, but the focus now moves to how we can support the re-opening of our economy. ‘Eat Out to Help Out’, a VAT reduction for tourism and hospitality businesses, and incentives for employers to keep their employees on over the next few months are just the start, with more initiatives expected in the autumn. You can find further details at duncanbaker.org.uk. When elected, one of my pledges was to work on improving mobile coverage and broadband speeds in North Norfolk. I’m pleased that the government has introduced the ‘Universal Service Obligation’ which enables anyone with an internet connection slower than 10Mbps to request an upgrade at no cost to the customer. We are also working on a Shared Rural Network, a UK equivalent of ‘roaming’ which will allow mobile phone users to access the strongest signal regardless of which network they are on. There is more to be done, but this is good progress. Chloe Smith MP and I are working hard on delivering two major upgrades to healthcare: a new Accident & Emergency department at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital; and an Urgent Treatment Centre for

Cromer Hospital. These plans will have several additional benefits – with local people having less distance to travel to access healthcare; and enabling ambulances to remain ‘closer to home’, thus reducing ambulance response times in North Norfolk. Again, this work is ongoing, but the government is keen to do all it can to see these major projects delivered. Over the past few months, my office team and I have dealt with thousands of enquiries, both Covid-related and on other issues. If I can help you with any issue, please do contact me on 01692 557140 or at duncan@duncanbaker.org.uk. During July and August I will be touring the whole constituency, visiting as many of our towns and villages as possible, meeting constituents, and learning more about the issues which matter most to you. Details will be available shortly on my website and via social media and local newspapers. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible over the summer.

A Lost World by Leslie Kinsley

Keeper not Poacher (part 1) I wonder how the old tale of poacher turned gamekeeper came about. In my case it was because I loved to be out among the wildlife and I loved a challenge. My Boss at the farm knew I was interested in game. I did all his rabbiting for fun as well as the extra cash from selling the rabbits I caught. In those days, rabbits were capable of taking a large part of a crop if they were not controlled. He decided to set up a shoot on one of the farms (his family owned three farms). A local syndicate of seven businessmen was formed. They paid all the costs and my Boss rented them some of his land. I took on the extra work for this in my spare time, until I retired, and then did it full time. The syndicate gave me a Land Rover and I got money on the shooting days. I loved the work, and would have done it for nothing. To start, 300 day old pheasant chicks were purchased. They were very expensive, and caring for them was hard work. I kept them indoors under a heat lamp making sure they ate and drank properly, and then they went out into a netted run with housing for night time where they could be shut up in safety. At seven weeks old, they could be taken to the release pens which were in the woods. I surrounded an area with netting and fed them there morning and night. By this age they had enough ight feathers to enable them to scramble into the bushes at night, so they were in less danger from vermin. By feeding them at 4am and 4pm I kept them on the farm for the shoot Rats, stoats, weasels and foxes were all keen to get pheasant on the menu, though the rats and also magpies were mostly interested in pheasant eggs. I have seen a Magpie follow a hen pheasant to her nest, remembering its location for raiding later. Eggs from wild pheasant and partridge were a bonus for me if I could get to them before the vermin took them. I could collect them and put them under a sitting hen. She would hatch and care for anything you put under her and do a much better job of the care than me.

Cushings syndrome

As pet owners we all understand how important it is to be watching for signs of disease so this week we focus on a particular disease seen in dogs and called Cushing’s disease.

What is Cushing’s disease? Cushing’s disease (also called hyperadrenocorticism) is caused by an overproduction of cortisol, a naturally occurring steroid hormone. This overproduction is usually due to a benign tumour of either the pituitary gland (a gland found at the base of the brain) or one of the adrenal glands (found in the abdomen, next to each kidney). Although this sounds a little scary, it’s a disease we know a lot about and can control well to give pets a normal life. What are the signs of Cushing’s disease in dogs? Often dogs will show excessive thirst and frequent urination, increased appetite and therefore weight gain. Some owners may notice that their dog starts to get a pot-bellied appearance, hair loss and thin skin. Other symptoms which can be seen are excessive panting, muscle loss or weakness, lethargy and increased frequency of urinary and skin infections. How is Cushing’s disease diagnosed in dogs? If your dog is suspected to have Cushing’s syndrome your vet will perform blood tests specific for Cushings disease and known as either an ACTH stimulation test or a low-dose dexamethasone suppression test. How is Cushing’s disease treated? Cushing’s disease will progress if left untreated and can increase the risk of your dog developing other, potentially serious, conditions for which treatment can be intensive and costly. These include high blood pressure, diabetes, pancreatitis and increased susceptibility to infection. However, Cushing’s disease can be successfully managed enabling your dog to return to their normal lifestyle. Often the treatment of choice is a tablet which is given once a day and acts by reducing the production of cortisol by the adrenal glands. Your vet will advise a blood test shortly after starting the medication and at intervals throughout your pets life to monitor how your dog is responding to treatment and ensure they are receiving the most effective dose.

LOVE HOLT

LOVE HOLT – Holt is Open Following the latest government advice allowing non-essential retail to reopen from early July, the picturesque Georgian market town of Holt continues to reawaken at a steady but sensible pace. In collaboration with our North Norfolk District Council town liaison, we now have sanitise stations in key areas as well as pavement decals denoting ‘please wait here’ and ‘please queue here’, these also serving to indicate queue direction. Love Holt continues to adopt the ‘less is more’ light-touch approach as the town to builds on its reputation of ‘business as usual’ – Holt Is Open. BUDGENS The events that unfolded on the night of 21st June has left

the town bereft of a supermarket and, in many ways, has also left a big hole in the community too. C T Baker Group were able to move the Post Office to a new temporary home in Bakers and Larners within a week and are in the process of finalising plans to open an interim pop-up supermarket facility too. Meanwhile, Love Holt continues to promote Holt as a destination market town, working on a number of projects outlined below: MAKERS MARKET A new weekly Sunday market featuring curated crafts, artisan food producers and music. Every Sunday 11 till 3 Apple Yard Holt. Several hundred people attended the first one last Sunday with 18 stallholders present. Hoping to build on this for 2021 to include other areas of town. Traders are charged £30 a pitch, profits split 50/50 between Fresh Artisan Markets who run and curate the offering and Love Holt who, in turn, will use the money to help new initiatives and established events across town. The thinking behind the market is that it will: -help to increase the profile of Holt-increase footfall especially on traditionally quiet 7th trading day-introduce potential new traders to the town (some might start pop-ups and/or stay)-provide a great high quality shopping and eating experience for allTOWN TRAIL AND TREASURE HUNT The established Owl Trail offers an interesting historical and pictorial tour around town. Love Holt’s publishing a monthly treasure hunt – 10 clues to find and a monthly prize. GREENING HOLT Courgettes now appearing on Holt’s high street. Town trader Paul Laurie from Bird Ventures (bird food nature products and pet supplies) has started a Swift Action Group, encouraging building owners to consider installing a FREE bird box in suitable locations. HOLT WALK Plans continue for Holt’s first Walkathon September 27th. Three local charities three routes and individual or team entry levels. Love Holt’s helping to provide further town-wide entertainment on the day. Perfectly Plant Based Meals

Easy Italian Stuffed Peppers

We have all been encouraged recently to check our health and habits; there has never been a better time to consider your daily food choices. During lockdown, I found myself experimenting more and more with entirely plant-based meals, purely on health grounds rather than ethical ones. Having lots more time to play with ingredients was a real treat, and if you are completely plant based you do need to be more organised, take more time and make more effort. However, I was very pleasantly surprised by the sheer scale and range of dishes you can produce without using any animal-derived products. I’m not going to claim that this is always a cheaper option, but there is a lot of sense in not only expanding the range of foods that you eat, but also considering the wisdom of cutting down on saturated fats; being plant based (as long as you are being heathy with your choices and not choosing vegan ready meals and products) naturally does this for you. By eating in season, you can cut the cost of fruit and veg, which are at the heart of the plant based diet, and there’ a wealth of frozen, dried and tinned products out there, all of which are great for your health. With this recipe, I have used 2 products that have now become staples in our house: smoked tofu and mixed grain pouches. I only used the Tofoo range, having tried all of them this is the easiest and best flavour – no pressing required for the tofu, and brilliant depth of flavour. Mixed grains are such a good way of eating healthily, and they are surprisingly tasty and filling, giving dishes almost a meaty texture. Even the husband – a most determined meat eater – has happily converted over to a mainly plant based diet, although we do add in Greek live yoghurt, and the occasional egg based or cheesy dish. Most meat dishes can be converted easily to plant based with a few tricks up your sleeve, some of which I’ll be sharing with you over the next few columns. This is a popular dish now that we have once a week – it tastes like bolognaise in a pepper but is surprisingly filling. Add in a healthy mixed salad with an olive oil-based dressing and you have a hearty, heath giving Mediterranean meal that is super easy to prepare and easy on the budget too. Make the stuffing ahead of time‌.the flavour improves with the keeping.

Start by making the stuffing; gently fry the chopped red pepper, onion, celery, mushrooms, and garlic cloves in a little oil from the sun-dried tomato jar until softening. Follow the instructions on the microwave grains pack and heat through ready to add to the stuffing mix. Add to the sauce the smoked tofu pieces, herbs and smoked paprika and fry for a further 5 mins, then add the balsamic, tamari, tomatoes and puree and check seasoning before stirring in the microwave mixed grains. I like mine nice and smoky, so may add a little more paprika at this stage. You should have a nice thick sauce by this stage, of not add a little more puree, or a splash of water if too thick. Simmer for 10 mins. Having sliced the tops neatly off the peppers, add a little olive oil into them, and coat the insides using your fingers. Stuff them with the mixture and top with a little feta cheese if you like a cheesy hit (use a Vegan melting cheese if staying plant based) and pop the tops back on. Place into a preheated oven on 180° for approx. 30 – 40 mins, until the peppers are starting to slightly char around the edges. Serve with a large mixed salad.

Holt Tourist Information Town Clerk Report April-July 2020

The Town Council met for the first time since lockdown on Monday 13th July, although no meetings took place during April, May and June The Town Council have had a busy few months. We have been providing support to the residents of Holt by organising their prescriptions, offering a befriending service, delivering food parcels and providing help and support during the Covid-19 crisis. As well as providing community support the Town Council was able to ensure business continuity. Contractors and the maintenance team continued to work throughout the pandemic, cutting grass, painting fences, litter picking and patrolling and inspecting our sites. Our suppliers continued to be paid and the end of year accounts were successfully audited and completed. In total the council has organised over 250 prescription deliveries and worked with NNDC to arrange additional food deliveries to those in need. During the peak of lockdown, the Town Council provided weekly repeat prescriptions to 30 vulnerable residents, with over 150 residents having registered to use the Town Council prescription service. 10 residents registered to use the befriending service, the Town Council wishes to thank Cllr Tribe and Cllr Traynier who provided assistance with this service. The prescription delivery service was taken over by The Holt Caring Society in July, the Town Council will reimburse Holt Caring Society for any mileage costs incurred. At the end of April and throughout May, Holt Town Council offered a food delivery service on a Thursday from Budgens, this was for vulnerable residents who were unable to secure a Budgens delivery slot. In April Holt Town Council printed leaflets to residents, with phone numbers on for who to contact for help, support and information on local businesses offering food deliveries. The leaflet was delivered to every house in Holt within 3 days, the Town Council would like to say a huge thank you to all the volunteers who made this possible. Holt Town Council were awarded a £1000 grant to help provide food and essentials to the at risk and vulnerable in Holt. Cllrs chose to use the money to top up food parcels with perishables, ensuring vulnerable residents in receipt of the food parcels had a varied supply of fresh food. Holt Town Council set aside £5000 under a Covid-19 Grant Scheme, in April £500 was awarded to the Holt Youth Project and £500 to The Treehouse Café. Both organisations have provided much needed help and support to residents in the town. At the Town Council meeting held on Monday 13th July a further £750 was awarded to The Holt Youth Project and The Treehouse Community Café and a new grant of £750 was awarded to The Owl Playgroup. Many events which were planned to take place to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day were cancelled due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Holt Town Council were still keen to mark the day and so planted up the war memorial with red, white and blue flowers. The war memorial was guarded throughout Bank Holiday weekend by the Commemorative Tommy military figure and the flag was flying high.

distancing measures are followed. After inspections and seeking advice from the Councils Insurance company the play area on George V Playing fields was finally able to be opened up on Monday 27th July. The Memorial Gardens are now open 6 days a week Mon-Sat 8.30am – 4pm. The Cemetery has remained open throughout lockdown. The Church Street Toilets are still closed; however, the Town Council are working hard to try and get these open as soon as possible. There are public toilets open 7 days a week at the Albert Street Car Park in the centre of town. The Tourist Information is still closed, however the Town Council is hoping to be able to offer some kind of information service for visitors during August, details are still being discussed, please keep checking the Town Council website for more details. The Town Council are now following the original Town Council Meeting Schedule, meeting on the second Monday of every month at 7pm. The meetings will be held via the platform Zoom and will be held virtually for the foreseeable. If you would like to attend the meeting please contact the Town Clerk for joining details, no later than midday on the day of the meeting. All Town Council meetings are open to members of the public and each meeting has a section for public participation. It has been a challenging few months, I am incredibly grateful to have worked alongside the fantastic staff at Holt Town Council, the Town Cllrs, NNDC Officers, and the invaluable Community Volunteers. Thank you to everyone for all your help and support. Gemma Harrison Town Clerk

IS YOUR CONSERVATORY TOO HOT IN THE SUMMER & TOO COLD IN THE WINTER?

The Town Council were shocked and saddened by the fire at Budgens. The Council worked closely with C T Baker and NNDC in the weeks following the fire to ensure those that relied upon Budgens for their weekly shop had access to food. The Council helped compile a customer list for Budgens in Aylsham, C T Baker were able to offer food deliveries within a week of the fire, from their Aylsham store. Earlier this month the Town Council worked with both Love Holt and NNDC to ensure the town was Covid ready ahead of opening. A number of hand sanitiser stations have been positioned around the town along with helpful decals on the pavements to ensure social

Test and Trace

Residents in Norfolk are being reminded that they are the most important link in the Test and Trace system. The steps to take if you or any member of your household display Covid 19 symptoms are simple and can be key in preventing infections being spread. If you are symptomatic you must isolate as soon as you notice symptoms and to have no face to face contact with anyone outside of your household. It is important to do this straight away, and for everyone in the household to isolate as they could also be infectious even without symptoms. As soon as you isolate, visit www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119 to book a test. Stay in isolation until you receive your results, which will include instructions on what to do next. Cllr Bill Borrett, Norfolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, said:

“This isn’t just about protecting ourselves, but making sure we all play our part to protect everyone around us. We all have friends and family that we want to keep safe – whether that’s parents, elderly grandparents, and even our children. And we need everyone to play their part to help us do that. We all have to work together to keep each other safe.” Cath Byford, Chief Nurse with NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Our call to everyone is, if you have coronavirus symptoms then self-isolate, get a test and help us track down people you have been in contact with. It’s one way that together we can beat this virus.” But Test and Trace isn’t only about symptomatic individuals: when a positive test result arrives, teams of contact tracers will search for everyone the Covid positive individual has been in recent contact with and will alert them. If you are alerted by NHS Test and Trace, you must isolate for 14 days after your contact with the individual. If you develop symptoms, you must book a test at the NHS coronavirus website and your household must isolate.

Local Outbreak Control Plan

Keeping yourselves and others safe

A Norfolk Local Outbreak

Control Plan has been launched under the strapline Protect Ourselves, Protect Others.

Protect Norfolk to set out how the county will support the national NHS Test and Trace programme to prevent and contain the spread of coronavirus. The plan sets out how Norfolk’s Public Health will work with a range of County Council departments and community partners to prevent local outbreaks in the first place. However, if outbreaks do occur, the plan sets out how they will be tracked in specific work places, settings, and communities and managed to limit further transmission. Also detailed is how Norfolk residents can find further guidance and support. Norfolk’s Director of Public Health has led on the development of our Local Outbreak Control Plan in partnership with district councils, NHS Chief Executives and the Norfolk Resilience Forum. It was developed after the Government announced that every area of England should produce a plan to prevent and manage local outbreaks of coronavirus as lockdown measures are eased. Prevention is key, and with further restrictions having been lifted, measures such as hand washing, social distancing in public places, and encouraging people to access testing immediately if they are unwell, are more important than ever.

Coronavirus is still with us. Cases in Norfolk are low and we want to keep them that way. The best thing to do to protect ourselves and others is to continue to wash our hands regularly, keep our distance from others and wear a face covering in shops and on public transport. To protect others, you and everyone living in your house should isolate straight away if you show symptoms. The symptoms are: a new continuous cough; fever; or a loss or change in your taste and smell. As soon as you isolate, visit www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119 to book a test. Everyone is eligible to get a test if they have symptoms. You can choose either a drive-through test or a home test kit. Stay in isolation until you receive your results, which will include instructions on what to do next. NHS Test and Trace will contact people who test positive for Covid-19. They will ask you about who you have been in contact with from two days before onset of symptoms to seven days after. This will identify people at risk who could pass on the virus before (or without) showing symptoms themselves. For more information about how to stay safe and how to get support if you need it whilst isolating visit: norfolk.gov.uk/coronavirus

James Glennie, Holt Festival Fine Art Director, said:“The solitude of lockdown has provided quiet inspiration for many artists. It has been a time of innovation and productivity and we are delighted with the many and varied entries that we have received so far for this year’s Sir John Hurt and Sworders Art Prizes.” Glennie added: “Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, we were forced to cancel Holt Festival 2020 and its popular Exhibition of Shortlisted Works which were due to take place in July. However, given the artists’ enthusiasm, we have subsequently extended the entry deadline for the Sir John Hurt and Sworders Art Prizes until midnight on 1 September 2020 by which time it is hoped it will be possible to reschedule the Exhibition of Shortlisted Works.” Entries for this year’s Sir John Hurt Art Prize will be judged by art and architectural historian, Nichola Johnson; curator and publisher, David Case; Transform Your and award-winning artist, Susan Gunn. And the Sworders Art Prize entries Body Without will be judged by Susan Gunn and publisher and gallery owner, Adrian Hill. Body goals

Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic. Helping you to achieve your ideal body shape. Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted dangers of obesity. Obesity is a major worldwide health issue. It puts us at a higher risk of heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, some cancers and a large number of other medical problems. Unfortunately most of us struggle to achieve weight loss without any help. Ideally we want to lose inches but preserve muscle mass and skin elasticity. What happens with ageing? As we age all three elements that determine our body shape are aected. Our metabolism slows down and it takes forever to burn o that dessert! Work and life in general get in the way and our activity levels are reduced. Consumption of alcohol, tobacco, excessive sun exposure and lifestyle factors play a role too. We lose collagen at 1% a year from the age of 18 so skin becomes less elastic and wrinkles and laxity can appear.

So how can we help? We can help you achieve your ideal body shape with the help of our treatments. You have a medical consultation where we devise a bespoke programme to help you reduce your energy balance so you can lose a realistic amount of weight. Yo-Yo dieting is not very good so lifestyle changes are extremely important for long term results. Hormonal changes make it very diďŹƒcult for fat to be mobilised from resistant pockets such as around the belly, anks and hip areas or genetically susceptible areas such as chin and jowls. We have injectable treatments, which can help dissolve these fatty deposits and we can also help with our energy-based devices such as ultrasound, lasers and radiofrequency machines. Skin elasticity and cellulite can also be helped usually with a combination of treatments such as radio frequency. We also have several lasers and injection treatments for collagen stimulation and improving skin texture.

Finally in patients near their ideal body weight but with resistant localised areas of fat, liposuction is considered the gold-standard option for body contouring. We carry it out under pure local anaesthesia. It is a walk-in, walk-out procedure with fantastic results. We also oer surgical options such as modiďŹ ed and mini-tummy tucks and arm-lifts also under pure local anaesthesia. We are uniquely placed to oer all these options to our patients under one roof. This allows us to device a customised treatment programme rather than be limited by only a few choices.

So if you have struggles to achieve your ideal body shape now is the time to pick up your phone and call 01603 736487. You can also log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk to ďŹ nd out more information. _______________________________________

WEA Wells Branch - Autumn Term 2020

Our hopes of running a day school on the Tiananmen Square Massacre in early March went the way of all things thanks to coronavirus and it will come as no surprise to you that we are not going to be able to oer any face-to-face courses in Wells during the second half of 2020. What will happen beyond that we don’t yet know (these are very uncertain times) but we will keep you posted. However, all is not lost; WEA is still active nationally and regionally and there are courses available on-line for those that wish to remain educationally active during the in between times. If you’re a member of WEA you’ll already know that in addition to such things as a twice yearly magazine and early bird enrolment, you’ve also had free access to the weekly members' lectures that WEA has been offering via Zoom during lock down. These have included talks on subjects as varied as highwaymen, astronomy, sustainable gardening, ancient Athens, British cinema and even the dreaded virus itself; well worth the ÂŁ15 a year it costs to join (go to www.wea.org.uk/get-involved/membership to ďŹ nd out more). However if you’re not a member but you do have access to the internet there will be courses available on-line that you can enrol on. For obvious reasons these are not going to be free (the WEA tutors need to be paid if they are to retained for more conventional use in future) but the cost will be less that that of a conventional face-to-face or ‘classroom’ course. The best way to ďŹ nd out about these on-line courses is to sign up to WEA’s mailing list (www.wea.org.uk/join-our-mailing-list). Once subscribed you’ve be sent all the latest news from your region (we’re in the Eastern Region) plus information about the on-line courses that will be available during the autumn term. You can enrol on these courses now and the enrolment procedure will be just as before, you either do so on-line or by telephone. The only real change is that you will have to pay by card when you enrol; there won’t be a way of paying in cash, not until things get back to normal at least. Hopefully we’ll have better news for you later in the year. In the meantime we hope you all stay well, stay cheerful and stay safe.

SPORT AND RECREATION A FOOTBALL QUIZ TO TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF ‘THE BEAUTIFUL GAME’

Walking Rugby Resumes at Fakenham with Non-contact Games and Fitness

Fakenham Walking Rugby Group was a year old in May but sadly any celebrations were put on hold because of lockdown. After over 100 days of no rugby our mixed group has restarted on Wednesday Evenings. Usually we start with warm-up exercises and follow with a game of walking rugby, which is not possible under current rules. Instead we are playing a series of socially distanced rugby themed games, which have proved so popular we will probably continue with them after lockdown in addition to our normal routines If you haven’t heard about Walking Rugby it is a game for both sexes (our group is one third ladies) and aimed at predominantly the over 50’s though we do have two members in their 40s. No knowledge of the game or experience is needed, and new members are welcome; the first session is free to try. Further details can be found on our website but sessions are held every Wednesday start at 1850 and last an hour: https://www.pitchero.com/clubs/fakenhamrufc Or contact the organiser: Jeffrey Pearce jdpearce@ btinternet.com

Founder Members of the Football League quiz 1 point awarded times by the question number (75 points possible) 1. River Plate play in which country? 2. Which league team plays in Cleethorpes? 3. Solution to No. 280: 1…Re1+ 2. Rxe1 Bxd2+ wins the Q, and after 3. Kxd2 Qg5+ 4. Kd1 Qxh5+ Black has material, positional advantage and attacking chances. Adolf Anderssen, this week’s hero, won the unofficial World Championship tournament, London 1851, lost a match to Paul Morphy in 1858, but resumed it on Morphy’s almost immediate retirement until Wilhelm Steinitz defeated him in their match in 1866. I have reconstructed (from memory) No. 281, the last in our current solving competition, and I cannot do better than quote (again from memory) my source, a book by P. No Fault Divorce Bill Receives Royal Assent!

When will this come into effect?

It will take some time for things to get up and running as there will need be a number of changes to the rules, procedure and forms so that no fault divorce can be implemented. It is hoped that couples will be able to obtain a no fault divorce from Autumn 2021. However, there are those who remain concerned about the changes and how the process will actually work in terms of the six-month notice period. The Law Society have suggested that the six month period should begin when the divorce application is received by the respondent rather than when the divorce is applied for. They argue that this would ensure that the couple are on the same page from the start and would have sufficient time to seek legal and financial advice. They have asked the government to consider their concerns in and it may be that the finer details will be tweaked before it is fully implemented.

The biggest change in divorce law in our lifetime is now set to become a reality as the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Bill receives Royal Assent, first promised by the government in April 2018. Family lawyers up and down the country are delighted that the bill has reached the end of its parliamentary journey after years of campaigning. The change means that couples in England and Wales will no longer have to assign blame in order to be granted a divorce. Something which could help reduce conflict between separating couples and encourage families to look to the future rather than taking part in the "blame game". So what is current divorce process? The main piece of legislation dealing with divorce is the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973. In order to obtain a divorce you need to prove that the marriage has been broken down irretrievably. This can be proven by relying upon one or more of the following facts: 1. Adultery 2. "Unreasonable behaviour" 3. Desertion 4. 2 years separation with consent 5. 5 years separation

At Clapham & Collinge we have a dedicated team of experts who are able to provide you with all of the necessary information, support and legal advice on family law. As you will see, three of the facts are based on a period of separation. If this does not apply to your circumstances you must rely upon either adultery or "unreasonable behaviour". Unreasonable behaviour is the ground that is most commonly cited on divorce. Due to the very nature of these facts, the system is fault-based and relies upon one party apportioning blame to the other.

How will no fault divorce change the system? Instead of having to apportion blame, couples will be able to simply say that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. This can be done jointly or individually. Under the new system, there must be a minimum six-month period between the lodging of a petition to the divorce being made final.

Little Theatre cinema returns with two blockbusters

Movies are making a comeback to the big screen at Sheringham Little Theatre in August – kicking off with an uplifting feel-good film. Military Wives will be shown at 7.30pm on Friday August 7th as the auditorium opens its doors for the first time since lockdown. Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: “Our audiences were booking keenly and looking forward to this movie before lockdown, and it is an ideal storyline, about bringing people together, for the return of our cinema.” Military Wives, starring Kristin Scott Thomas and Sharon Horgan, tells the story of women whose partners are serving soldiers in Afghanistan who formed a choir that becomes a media sensation and global movement. The next planned film – on Tuesday August 18th - is the powerful First World War blockbuster 1917 which follows two young British soldiers on a perilous journey through enemy lines to deliver a vital message which can save thousands of lives.
