A Note from the editor

As we emerge from the second lockdown, Christmas is around the corner and thoughts turn to making the best of things in these strange times. We may not be free to have the Christmas we would like but we can still celebrate the season, albeit in different ways. The high streets are looking festive and shop windows are full of sparkle and tempting goodies. Many of our local businesses have been brought to the brink through the pandemic and are hoping Christmas may save the day, so shop locally if you can. But spare a thought for those less fortunate, charities are having a hard time too supporting those in need, so why not give an extra gift this Christmas to your chosen cause. Even though restrictions have been eased, it remains more vital than ever to observe the Covid guidelines, keep ourselves safe and protect our vulnerable to minimize the rise in cases. That being said, remember those on their own this Christmas, let family, neighbours and friends know you are thinking of them and they are not forgotten. It just remains for me to wish all our readers and advertisers a Happy Christmas and a better New Year. Enjoy your December magazine. Keep well and safe. Jo – Editor.

Budgens of Holt – temporary store open

CT Baker Group has confirmed that it opened a temporary store in Holt on Monday 23 November, after a fire destroyed its Budgens of Holt supermarket in June. The store, which is approximately 5,000sq ft in size and situated on the car park at Kerridge Way, opened to customers at 10.30am on Monday 23 November and will open from 7am until 9pm, Monday to Saturday and 10am – 4pm on Sunday. It is anticipated the temporary store will operate while a permanent replacement for the supermarket is built on the site of the former store, subject to planning permission. Jane Gurney-Read, Managing Director for CT Baker Group, said “The Budgens of Holt team are looking forward to welcoming back our customers who have shown us so much support in the months since we lost our supermarket in such terrible circumstances. “I would also like to thank Mar-Key and Fit Out UK for working so quickly to get our store up and running. It has, without question, been a challenging year, but we are determined as a team to end it on a positive note and are looking forward to being at the heart of Holt’s community once more.” Budgens of Holt’s home delivery service, which currently serves more than 110 customers per week, will continue to operate from the Group’s Budgens of Aylsham store and Holt’s Post Office will remain situated at Bakers & Larners of Holt while the temporary store remains open.

County Councillor News

from County Councillor Sarah Butikofer sarah.butikofer.cllr@norfolk.gov.uk or 07968 897235

Well that was a year and a half that I think many of us would all rather move on from! So firstly some highways updates for you. I am sure you will all be aware but in case not – the new link road to the industrial estate is OPEN finally. Sadly when as a result of that opening the road improvements were made on the Hempstead Road, the contractors failed to move the lamp posts to either the front or back of the new wider pavement! Consequently those with buggies, walking aides or wheel chairs have to walk in the road! I am told at the time of writing that this situation is currently being rectified I do hope so. Once more someone has managed to drive over the top of the roundabout on the bypass, I have gone back to highways again to ask if they have any ideas at all for ways we can improve the lighting on the junction and its approaches. I think I mentioned last time that some residents had raised concerns with me about speeding along the Cromer Road into and out of Holt, I am pleased to be able to confirm that we will shortly be installing a SAM2 at this location on a rota basis to try and start addressing this problem. We have also asked if it is possible to have some enforcement undertaken in the area. To readers who visit The Runtons please note the parking restrictions in West Runton have been changed in front of the shops and along station road, please be aware and check the changes when parking. These have been a work in progress a very long time, and I am delighted they have finally been completed, these were done to support the businesses in this location.

From Holt Holistic Centre

Lastly on highways, again after a long struggle we have three new grit bins being delivered to Cley to try and counter some of the problems residents face with the Holt Road not being on the gritting route. Whilst not a perfect solution I do hope they will help. At the time of writing we await the outcome of the Gladman Housing Appeal, as soon as we know the result we will be sure to share it with you. Finally, again at the time of writing we are continuing the fight to try and save Holt Hall, much of this has been led by the Friends of Holt Hall for whose help I am sure we are all extremely grateful. Mike, Steve Steff and I, continue to do all we can to push County to rethink this ill thought through disposal. Holt Hall has a fantastic reputation for its offer and the team there receive the most fantastic glowing reports from the young people and schools who use the facilities. I strongly believe the County should have conducted a thorough consultation and feasibility study before reaching the position it has, a two week consultation is an insult. There are so many ideas and suggestions that have come forward to try and make the facility financially sustainable. By the time you read this it is likely that Cabinet will have made a ruling on this. However, if in the meantime I can be of further help or assistance please do not hesitate to contact me. I do hope that 2021 will be kinder to all and that I will be able to get out and about visiting more of you again soon. Very best wishes for Christmas and the New Year to all.

Friends of Holt Hall Save Holt Hall Campaign

News from The Venue

We are out of lockdown once again, thank goodness, and resuming some of the activities at the Venue. Who knows what the winter will bring, but we remain optimistic about the vaccines, and hopeful that by Spring next year we may again be operating closer to normal. Our Friends of the Venue Scheme is up and running, and gathering more people, which is bringing in vital funds to keep the home fires burning until we are once again able to welcome more groups and activities into the centre, and fundraise through events. We were so encouraged by a massive £5,000 private donation by a local resident, and also by our Gift Aid donations, which will recoup nearly £3,000 for this year; all very timely funds that help the Charity so much and enable us to keep your local Community Centre open for the future. Huge thanks to our Treasurer, Anthony Burn, for doing so much hard work on the finances this year. Unfortunately, due to COVID, we had to close the Meals on Wheels for a couple of weeks, but by the time you read this we will be once again delivering meals to the most vulnerable members of the community. We hope to have a Christmas Meal on Christmas Eve, once again sponsored by Allards of Holt and Holt Fish Bar, to whom we are most grateful for their amazing

support, and run by Holt Community Café, who have provided a Christmas DayCelebration for the last 5 years. This year we will be having Christmas Day off, but we are really looking forward to enjoying a great Festive Feast on Christmas Eve, with all the trimmings and music and fun as well. If you would like to help out and be a part of this please do call me on 07789 220256 to join the team. We are aiming to have the Café back up and running in the New Year all being well, and hopefully by then the most vulnerable of us will be protected by the vaccine, allowing us all to breathe a sigh of relief. If you are not sure what activities or groups are on at the Venue, do call us on the numbers below, email us or check out the website, as things are still very fluid. All that remains is to thank you all for your amazing support this year, and to wish you all a very Merry Christmas …. See you in the New Year! If you would like to become involved as a volunteer at the Centre, or need more information about our regular activities, please do pop in or call us on 01263 713427, or email holtcommunitycentre@gmail.com. FOHH is very disappointed that the recommendation to Norfolk County Council Cabinet is to press ahead with the County Hall Administration plan to close Holt Hall Environmental Studies Centre. If Cabinet on December 7th confirms this, the service will not reopen after the Covid Pandemic. On top of this, it is very likely Cabinet will make a further decision will initiate action to sell the hall with 75 acres of wonderful natural environment. This means the skills, resources and facilities at this wonderful centre will be lost. Friends of Holt Hall hoped any decision would be led by wider consultation on the needs of Norfolk children and other young people. They already benefit from learning about the natural world and themselves, alongside renewable energy and sustainable lifestyles. A strategy for outdoor learning could shape comprehensive plans for public, private and charitable sector investment to meet these needs. We understand some work was planned to start on a strategy, but months after this crucial decision will have been taken! FOHH is convinced there are many ways to strengthen the operating model for Holt Hall and move it to a more sustainable financial footing, a flagship for sustainability and the natural world in our beautiful county and at manageable cost to the public. The Report to Cabinet recognises but rejects outright a “partnership” option. It claims public sector investment in a “subsidised” service would be “unfair competition” for other providers. Public investment in the sector should grow, not shrink, to benefit both children and providers as we emerge from Covid with growing needs to understand and love the natural world, pursuing opportunities for new jobs in the green economy. Is a market bereft of public funded providers really the best way to develop insights and love for the natural world in our children, for their employment, their life skills? What really shocks us are reports in the media that three of these providers – Brancaster Millennium Centre, Aylmerton and Kingswood, have announced that they are closed, and not necessarily just for these Covid months. They say the facilities and expertise of their activity leaders are at risk, challenged by the lack of income from visits. So is the future provision of outdoor learning for our county’s children and young people. FOHH believes NCC gathered and assessed the evidence about a “landscape” of providers. We are confident this reveals risk and uncertainty about what services may be available for the natural world learning in which Holt Hall excels. Odd, at a time when the government has introduced a Natural History GCSE designed to promote hands on experiential learning and love of the environment! We invite the media to encourage the public to Add even more to the 5300 signatures on our petition – an impressive public interest! Write to their County Councillor to express how they value Outdoor Learning for future generations and Holt Hall’s track record, asking for 3 things: 1 Please delay this decision 2 develop a clear Outdoor Learning a strategy with the widest possible consultation. 3 NCC to consult with potential partners on how to make Holt Hall’s valuable service more sustainable in financially difficult times for the whole economy

The poster is particularly for small flock keepers and pet bird owners. Defra is promoting the Prevention Zone on the web site which has some simple but effective biosecurity advice for keepers – and additional biosecurity requirements for keepers of larger flocks. Keep up-to-date on the website, use the search ‘avian influenza latest’ and the main page should provide all information you should need. Public Health England advises the threat to human health remains very low. Food Standards Agency (FSA) states that based on the current scientific evidence it poses a very low food safety risk for UK consumers. Avian influenza is unconnected with coronavirus. Support for Families: Norfolk County Council is developing a package of support to help families over the winter months. Information will be out soon but if anyone needs support now do not wait but go to www.norfolk.gov.uk/coronavirus or by calling 0344 800 8020. Also, NCC and Norfolk schools are encouraging more families to register and apply for free school meals, so that they begin to receive support in time for the school holidays. To find out if you are eligible and to register for free school meals visit: https://www.norfolk.gov.uk/education-andlearning/schools/school-meals-and-milk. As part of the wider package of support the council will be further extending the Norfolk Assistance Scheme, which already provides support for food, fuel, clothes and other essential household items to Norfolk’s residents experiencing hardship. Visit www.norfolk.gov.uk/NAS or if no internet call 01603 223392 (option 5). If the line is busy, they can leave a message and the team will call back. If any or all of the support described will help you – apply because it is for you and your family. And please share the information as widely as possible. Recycling: Good news that the recycling centres were kept open during the latest ‘lock down’. (Hopefully if all goes well the same situation will pertain for any further instructions/guidance.) Libraries: As frequent library users know our libraries were closed during the ‘lock down’. Good news - people were still able to use the online services; continue to reserve items online ready for when libraries re-opened; take part in online activities and borrow a range of eBooks and eMagazines. I am awaiting an update on the library service but of course the online service continues. Safest for regular information is to sign up for the library customer newsletter: https://www.norfolk.gov.uk/libraries-local-history-and-archives/ libraries/libraries-newsletter. (Please remember those you know without a lap top etc - if you spot something which might be of value or interest ask if they would like a copy e.g. library newsletter – Avian Influenza etc.)

Christmas Decorations: I thought it lovely and warming to see Christmas lights being turned on early. I am encouraging Mike (spouse) to produce ours from the loft. In case you are in doubt I always vote for decorations to go up early and come down late. I may win this time. And I would again like to acknowledge the many good works which continue to take place throughout our division and not just at Christmas. Warm Christmas wishes to you all.

Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ): An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) was declared in England (effective from 11 November 2020). All bird keepers whether they have pet birds, commercial flocks or just a few birds in a backyard flock are required by law to take a range of biosecurity precautions. If you keep poultry or captive birds, you must take action to reduce the risk of disease in your flock by following government advice on biosecurity. Further details of the measures that apply can be found in the AIPZ declaration and biosecurity guidance. North Norfolk Family Solicitors support ‘Good Divorce Week 2020’.

Neale Grearson

Family Solicitors at North Norfolk based law firm Clapham & Collinge LLP are supporting Resolution’s ‘Good Divorce Week 2020’, a national campaign that aims to promote practical and constructive ways for separating parents to put the needs of their children first. Organised by Resolution, a community of more than 6,500 family justice professionals, this year the campaign focuses around the benefits of early legal advice, as it prepares to re-launch its Code of Practice.

Resolution members believe the process of separating, sorting out finances and arranging childcare should be done in a way that minimises conflict and keeps the best interests of any children involved at the heart of proceedings. There is no silver bullet approach to divorce, as every family is different. However, by seeking early professional advice, couples have the benefit of considering a range of options and making a decision that is most suitable to them.

Neale Grearson, who is a Partner and Head of Family Law Department at Clapham & Collinge LLP, is a qualified Collaborative Lawyer and member of the Norfolk Good Divorce Group. This is made up of family lawyers from firms throughout the county who are committed to helping clients achieve a divorce or separation in a non-confrontational way, without going to court.

What is a "good divorce"?

The term "good divorce" is an interesting phrase and in some ways is contradictory. A natural pre-cursor to divorce is a relationship breakdown. Relationship breakdowns can be difficult for parties at a time when emotions are often running high. This can increase tensions especially when faced with a legal mechanism which is currently heavily reliant upon fault. The so called "blame game" can have a huge impact

on the couples future relationship.

Change is a natural part of life but when it happens within the family unit it can be difficult to deal with. Not only can it be difficult for the couple themselves but it can affect children and also the wider family. Many children may not want their parents to separate, they may feel confused and uncertain about what the future holds or sometimes they may have mixed feelings if they know that their parents were not happy in the relationship.

The idea of a "good divorce" is to try and reduce conflict between the parties and the impact that this has on children and the wider family. The ultimate goal is for parties to come out the other side of the relationship breakdown amicably, with respect for each other, putting their children's needs first and limiting the overall impact of the breakdown on their children and the wider family.

Clapham & Collinge’s family law advice is bespoke, confidential and totally designed around you, helping you come to the best conclusion for both you and your family. Neale, together with Associate Solicitor Caroline Eaton are members of Resolution and fully support and uphold Resolution’s Code of Practice in the work they do. Norfolk Life by Richard Shepheard The Swaffham Gypsy Part 3

George Borrow's last work Romano Lavo Lil (which means Romany Word Stories) was published in 1874 when he was in his early seventies. It isn't considered to be as great as his previous works, but contains a jewel in my mission to establish a connection between Borrow, the great creative artist and Jem Mace, father of modern boxing and the greatest pugilist of his era. Both men were born in the same part of Norfolk and within thirty years of each other, in the ďŹ rst half of the nineteenth century. The passage which clinches my purpose comes in a chapter called "The Potteries, 1864". Two pages of Borrow, creative artist and eloquent spokesman for the Gypsies, are so excellent that it is a shame to resort to extracts, but may I begin with his introduction to the identity of Jem Mace's uncle, Barney, Barnard or Barnabas Mace.

"...Amidst these Chorody caravans and Gypsy tents may frequently be seen the ker-vardo, the house on wheels of one who, whenever he takes up his quarters here, is considered cock of the walk, the king of the place..." He has a face which "...is wonderfully like that of a masti of the largest size, particularly in its jowls; his neck is short and very thick, and must be nearly as strong as that of a bull; his arms are long and exceedingly muscular and his ďŹ sts huge and bony...he is a desperate pugilist and has three times fought in "the ring" with good men, whom, though not a scientiďŹ c ďŹ ghter, he beat with ease by dint of the terrible blows...." Borrow asks: "Is he Gypsy, Chorody or Hindity mush (wild Irishman)" but advises his reader not to address him as such. Then he introduces his man as follows: "That is Mr. G.A. a travelling horse-dealer, who lives in a caravan, and ďŹ nds it frequently convenient to take up up his abode for weeks together on Latimer's Green. " What follows is essential in the link that I am seeking: "he is a thoroughbred Englishman, though he is married to a daughter of one of the old, sacred Gypsy families, a certain Lurina Ratziemescri, duck or heron female who is a very a very handsome woman..." (remember the Lorina Baker from my researches at Beeston near Swaffham, birthplace of Jem Mace and his cousin and great chum, Poley, son of Barney and Lorina).

The somewhat convoluted path from Lorina Baker (previously sourced to Heron) to Lurina Ratziemescri has an almost comic explanation. Note that Borrow says of her "...duck or heron female...." well, this is because there is no word in the Gypsy language for heron and ratziemescri (duck) was the only water bird available and hence a substitute! Two things emerge from Borrow's account of Mr. G.A. He is an Englishman with a reputation for honesty in his horse traďŹƒcking. Elsewhere in his work (most notably in The Gypsies of Spain) Borrow advises against horse trading with Gypsies and Mr. G. seems to hold them and their nefarious practices in contempt.

For my part, I have to respectfully disagree with Borrow about race. Despite the fact that his mother was Norfolk girl, there is a whole raft of Gypsy elements associated with Jem Mace, including the fact that he spoke Romani. If that is so, it must hold good for his father, William's youngest brother, Barney Mace, or Mr. G.A. as Borrow mysteriously calls him. There must be some distant Romany heritage for the Maces. They use the Gypsy "Jib" (language), hold the craft of petulegro (farrier blacksmith) and are renowned as cooromengro's (boxers). Above all that, however, Barney Mace is ďŹ ne, honest, Norfolk born, Englishman and a tribute to the race.

Christmas Facts

Hanging stockings out comes from the Dutch custom of leaving shoes packed with food for St Nicholas’s donkeys. He would leave small gifts in return. Boxing Day gets its name from all the money collected in church alms-boxes for the poor. According to tradition, you should eat one mince pie on each of the 12 days of Christmas to bring good luck. On Christmas Eve in 2001, the Bethlehem Hotel had 208 of its 210 rooms free.

Holt Women’s Institute celebrates its 84th birthday this December. Started in 1936, 3 years before World War 2 started, I believe it has been an inspiration, a way to make friends, a chance to make a difference and form a strong female community Despite hardships during WW2, meetings continued, and members knitted garments for service personnel, hospital workers and evacuee children. Sadly, there have been no meetings since the middle of March. Nothing like this pandemic has ever caused the cessation of meetings. Holt WI will not be able to celebrate its birthday in December. Instead there is the hope that with the new vaccine and testing, we will be able to have our party in the Spring of 2021. In the meantime, the President and committee wish all our members, past and present, a very happy and healthy Christmas and an active and safe New Year. Stay safe.

SAINT ANDREW’S & ALL SAINTS NEWS The Parish of Holt with High Kelling

Rector: Fr. Howard Stoker SSC, The Rectory, Church Street, Holt NR25 6BB Tel: 01263 712048 email:holtrectory@tiscali.co.uk Assistant Curate: Fr Gary Gould. Tel: 01328 830715, Email: garygould57@gmail.com Parish Office Tel: 01263 713479 E: standrewsholt@btinternet.com website at www.holtchurch.org

FROM THE RECTOR Dear Friends, Back in September a National Newspaper ran the headline, “Christmas is cancelled.” With the loss of jobs, loss of income, loss of loved ones and with restrictions on gathering with family and friends, I don’t doubt that there are those who may want to cancel Christmas this year. And who could blame them? There is no escaping the fact that this year Christmas will be different and we will have to do differently if we are to make the most of it. While the parties, the food and drink, getting together with others and the exchange of presents are such an important part of Christmas they are of course not the real reason for the season. For Christians the world over, Christmas is more about the spiritual than the material. We celebrate nothing other than the incarnation of God in the child born to blessed Mary. Conceived by the Holy Spirit the Christ-child was the means by which God took human form and came to dwell among us, to love us and save us. Mary was the bearer of God and her child Jesus is both human and divine. “God in man, made manifest” as one carol puts it. The Christmas story recalls how Mary gave birth to the child Jesus in the unfamiliar surroundings of a stable, far away from home and separated from her family. I guess it would not have been how she or indeed Joseph would have wanted it to be. This coming Christmas may not be as how we would want it to be, but perhaps we can take some comfort from the thought that God came into our world to offer us hope and love. Someone once asked, “What do you have left if you take Christ our of Christmas?” The answer being M&S, (Marks & Spencers) and for many M&S could well be providing their Christmas! But being faced with the uncertainty and hardship of our current times, I hope and pray that people will put Christ back into Christmas this year and celebrate and share the one thing we can be certain of, that is the eternal love that God has for us which has been revealed in the gift of his Son, Jesus Christ. Christmas is certainly not cancelled.

Every blessing to you and yours this Christmas. Fr. Howard

Christmas Family Traditions

I love the tradition of passing recipes down through the family, and this is probably one of my all-time favourites handed on to me by my Mum, that evokes all my happiest childhood Christmas foodie memories. We have been baking these chocolate chip cookies for Christmas in our family for about 50 years. We try not to have them at all the rest of the year, so it is a real Festive treat for all the family that we look forward to. These cookies are in the American tradition (as we were living in America when they were conceived) and so are soft and chewy…and very moreish! They are super quick to run up, and freeze beautifully if you want to save half of them for another occasion, or cook them ahead of Christmas. They are a great alternative to mince pies, for those of us who don’t like the more traditional Christmas fayre, and a huge hit with kids both young and old. We eat them Christmas Eve with hot chocolate, and Christmas Day whilst ripping open the presents around the tree… pure festive magic! Carolyn Burn

Thank You

Dear Jo, I would like to thank everyone who sent cards and kind messages to me and our family following the sudden death of my dear sister Juliet Metson. Juliet lived nearly all her life in Holt and enjoyed being part of this friendly community. She was a regular helper at the Friday Club, a driver for Holt Caring and was a member of a fundraising committee for the East Anglian Children’s Hospice. In her quiet way she will be hugely missed. Messages of sympathy from so many people have been greatly appreciated by her family. Peta Benson

From Holt Consulting Rooms

Firstly, what is The Bowen Technique? It is a gentle therapy that is applied to areas of the body, using thumbs and fingers in a specific order through light clothing. The moves are a rolling-type move of the thumbs and forefingers and is designed to stimulate nerve pathways which allow a ‘conversation’ to take place between different neuro-muscular systems of the body. Between each set of moves, there is a short pause to allow the 'conversation' process to take place. These pauses increase the effectiveness of each subsequent set of moves. Bowen moves do not twist, click, crack, pull or overwork the body. Bowen is gentle and suitable for all ages and conditions such as: musculo-skeletal problems e.g. frozen shoulder, back and neck pain. Bowen may also be helpful with more organic problems. In my 24 years of practicing Bowen my clients have reported not only significant improvements in musculo-skeletal conditions but also with asthma, migraines, irritable bowel, ME, MS, infertility and other issues. Secondly, can I have Bowen during Covid 19? • You can make an appointment providing you have no symptoms of Covid19 or any other infection • You cannot make an appointment if you have had foreign travel as per government guidelines or live with someone who is symptomatic • When you arrive for your appointment please wash and sanitize your hands • I will ask a few Covid19 related questions • Blankets and couch covers have been removed from the treatment room • Pillows, couches, and seats are sanitized after

Merry Christmas From Toll Barn Vets!

Christmas is fun for all the family and that definitely includes all our pets! However, Christmas is often a busy time for our 24/7 on-site emergency service as there are plenty of hidden dangers lurking during the festivities which we should all be aware of to help keep our pets safe.

Christmas Cake, Christmas Pudding, Mince Pies and Fruit Bowls all contain raisins, sultanas or grapes. These should never be fed to pets as they can cause kidney damage and in severe cases kidney failure. They can also contain alcohol which can cause signs of intoxication as well as dangerous drops in blood sugar levels, blood pressure and body temperature. Not all dogs will be affected but there is no way of knowing which animals will suffer from toxicity so they are best completely avoided. Macadamia nuts can also be toxic causing neurological signs such as weakness, depression, tremors and vomiting within 12 hours of being eaten. Onions and garlic can also be harmful (even when cooked) with signs such as vomiting and diarrhoea and potentially destruction of red blood cells (haemolytic anaemia). Many Chhrristmas dinners include sage and onion stuffing or onion based gravy so it is best to avoid giving these “left overs” to pets.

Chocolate decorations are frequently used on trees and in stockings. Chocolate contains a stimulant called theobromine (similar to caffeine) which is toxic to dogs. The amount of theobromine varies with the type of chocolate (dark chocolate contains the highest levels).

Depending on the amount and type of chocolate eaten signs range from vomiting and diarrhoea to wobbliness, seizures and changes in heart rhythm (arrhythmias). If your pet eats chocolate it is important to be able to tell your vet how much and what type of chocolate has been eaten as this will help us calculate whether a toxic dose has been reached. Some foods such as sugar free gum and diabetic biscuits contain xylitol. Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar which is often used as a sweetener in low carbohydrate and diabetic products. When pets eat xylitol their blood sugar level can drop rapidly causing lethargy and weakness and in severe cases, seizures. Xylitol can also cause liver failure in some dogs. The signs of this can take several days to develop. We would advise urgent veterinary attention for any pet who is suspected to have eaten products containing xylitol.

Pets, especially dogs, have an exceptional sense of smell. This means they will often hunt out bones, foil or string with meat juices fr from the rubbish bin or counter tops. These bones are often brittle and splinter easily which can cause blockages or tears within the oesophagus and intestine whilst foil or string can cause obstructions within the stomach and intestine.

Many of these (and other) foods also contain high levels of fat. This can cause vomiting and diarrhoea and more seriously increases the risk of pancreatitis.

There are also several household dangers which are more common at Christmas. Tinsel and tree ornaments are parrtticularly attractive play things to cats and puppies. If eaten these will often cause blockages and twists within the intestines of your pet requiring immediate surgery to remove the material. Christmas ornaments will also often break if played with by pets. This can cause choking, cuts within

Pub invites submissions from local artists to demonstrate the importance of community through their work.

Festive bouquets often include Lilies but ingestion of the plant or plant pollen can cause kidney failure in cats. If your cat comes into contact with Lilies and the pollen sticks to their fur immediately place a buster collar or t-shirrtt on the cat to prevent them licking and ingesting more pollen and contact your vet for advice. Holly, Mistletoe and Poinsettias are also toxic causing vomiting, diarrhoea and depression. Mistletoe has been kknnown to cause collapse, changes in hearrtt rate and erratic behaviour following ingestion. Poinsettia sap has irritant properrtties which can cause blistering of the mouth and stomach when eaten. We would recommend all plants are kept well out of reach of inquisitive pets!

Most of these potential dangers are treatable if caught early enough so if you have any concerns about your pet during this festive period our 24/7 on site emergency service is available for our clients throughout Chhrristmas and New Year on our normal surgery phone number (01692 407126).

We wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas!

the mouth and damage to the intestines if eaten. Christmas trees themselves are also potentially toxic with pine needles causing irritation of the mouth (which may show as excessive drooling), vomiting, diarrhoea and weakknness. Naughty puppies and kittens have also been known to injure themselves climbing Christmas trees or knocking them over so it is always advisable to have a barrier to prevent access to the tree, as well as supervision!

Grants available from the WRVS Benevolent Trust

P C SANTA

The Trust oers grants for past or present volunteers or sta of Royal Voluntary Service, WRVS or WVS to help during a time of urgent need or crisis, when they ďŹ nd themselves in diďŹƒcult circumstances which impact badly on their quality of life, health or wellbeing. The Trust considers applications for grants to help them through this diďŹƒcult time. The Trust does not provide cash grants.

Santa Claus was in despair He had no presents – his sack was bare, Worldly pressure had now caught up The little children were out of luck.

The elves had been on strike for days, Santa could not aord minimum pay, The workshop was below sixty degrees (The minimum needed so they would not freeze).

Past grants have provided:

• Cookers • Washing machines • Beds • Stairlifts • Carpets and ooring • Boiler repairs or replacement • Roof repairs • Spectacles • Lifeline pendant systems • Mobility aids

The reindeer too wanted equal rights, They were all men – not a lady in sight, Donner and Blitzen, Prancer and Cupid Said eight men with girls names made them feel stupid. Rudolph then threw a great big wobbly, His nose blazed bright red and his horns went knobbly, He felt his nose was being used to please So he demanded copyright fees.

How to apply

To apply for a grant, you will need to be a past or present volunteer or sta member of Royal Voluntary Service, WRVS or WVS with at least one year’s service, and have a fairly limited income.

• Complete an application form (or get someone to do it for you) • Application forms are available on our website www.wrvsbt.org.uk • Submit it to the Trust either by email or post (the address is on the form) • The Trustees meet three times a year, but applications are considered in between meetings so there is no delay in responding to applicants

Tens of thousands of people have volunteered or worked for us over the years, maybe you, maybe your grandparent, parent, aunt, uncle, friend or neighbour. The Trust is here to help eligible applicants. Please help us to spread the word about our grants.

With 'equal rights' and 'copyright fees', 'elf and safety' brought him to his knees, Santa felt lost and totally helpless All because of political correctness.

He suddenly had a bright idea, Why shouldn't people have Christmas cheer, He deďŹ nitely knew what he must do So Santaland quit membership of the wretched E.U. Paul Scrivener.

How will Christmas dinner be dierent after Brexit? No Brussels!

North Norfolk Photographic Society

Zoom continues to keep North Norfolk Photographic Society going! On 4th November a competition was held that was intended to be printed pictures but was adapted to digital images to suit the medium. The judge, Andy Swain, was spared having to travel up from his home in Norwich and had 71 photographs to assess.

There were two members awarded ‘Gold’ and these were Judith Wells’ with ‘Pas de Deux’ and Paul Richards with ‘Pied Wagtail catching Flies’ which were both photos of birds – Judith’s being two terns striking a balletic pose.

Golden Jackals

Pied wagtail catching ies Andy Swain gave two ‘Silver’ awards – both to Mick Walker for ‘Commuter’ which is a striking picture of a cyclist travelling through a dramatic architectural scene, reected in water and ‘Golden Jackals’ – two Golden Jackals!

‘Bronze’ awards went to Diana Knight for ‘Otters Fishing in the Rain’ and ‘Kestrel with begging edgling chick’ and to Frederic Landes with ‘Mate Calling (Bee Eater)’. Norfolk begins its Tier 2 restrictions

On behalf of the Norfolk Resilience Forum Today, Norfolk enters the next stage of restrictions in Tier 2 – the second of the three new tiers.

This is the time for Norfolk residents to work together, to remain cautious and to keep our distance from others, in order to drive our rates of infection down before Christmas.

Tier 2 means that people will only be allowed to meet in groups of up to six when they are outside (The rule of 6) but there cannot be any mixing of households anywhere indoors, both at home and when in a public place, with the exception of support bubbles. There are also restrictions on how businesses operate, particularly around opening hours, and what people can do as part of an organised sport.

The rules around support bubbles (where a single-adult household can group with another household as if they were one) have been extended to help families with very young children or with continuous care needs. There is also a set of rules around childcare bubbles that apply to families with children under the age of 14 (as well as vulnerable adults). For full details see www.gov.uk/guidance/tier-2-high-alert

You should continue to follow social distancing guidance with people outside of your household or support bubble. This is critical to keeping you, your family and your friends as safe as possible.

The start of this next phase comes as rates of the virus in many areas of Norfolk continue to drop slightly, reflecting the national trend following lockdown, which came into effect on November 5. However, not all areas of the county have seen such figures.

Cllr Andrew Proctor, Leader of Norfolk County Council and Chair of the Norfolk Engagement Board, said: “While our aim was to leave the national lockdown in Tier 1, being in Tier 2 with much of the rest of the country, means we do face further restrictions so we must now work together towards a sustained decline in the virus to help us to return to lesser restrictions as soon as possible. It is essential that we stick to the rules, work together to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our county and ensure that the rates of infection continue to go downwards. The best way to protect ourselves and others is to keep our distance, wash our hands and cover our faces. It is also important to understand that people must continue to follow social distancing measures and isolate if

they have symptoms, test positive or are asked to isolate by contact tracing teams.”

Chief Constable, Simon Bailey, added “Our journey through this pandemic is not yet over and we must continue to work together to stop the spread of infections. We must all follow the restrictions in Tier 2 wherever we are in the county or country to ensure that we can return to lesser measures as soon as possible. These rules have been put in place to protect us all and we need you to work with us and follow them.”

Information on the national tiers is available at www.gov.uk/guidance/local-restriction-tierswhat-you-need-to-know#all-tiers

In Tier 2:

• you must not socialise with anyone you do not live with or who is not in your support bubble in any indoor setting, whether at home or in a public place • you must not socialise in a group of more than 6 people outside, including in a garden or a public space – this is called the ‘rule of 6’ • businesses and venues can continue to operate, in a COVID-Secure manner, other than those which remain closed by law, such as nightclubs • pubs and bars must close, unless operating as restaurants. Hospitality venues can only serve alcohol with substantial meals • hospitality businesses selling food or drink for consumption on their premises are required to: 1. provide table service only, in premises which sell alcohol 2. close between 11pm and 5am (hospitality venues in airports, ports, transport services and motorway service areas are exempt) 3. stop taking orders after 10pm • hospitality businesses and venues selling food and drink for consumption off the premises can continue to do so after 10pm as long as this is through delivery service, click-andcollect or drive-through • early closure (11pm) applies to casinos, cinemas, theatres, museums, bowling alleys, amusement arcades, funfairs, theme parks, adventure parks and activities, and bingo

Services to resume after lockdown ends

Key council services suspended during lockdown reopen as national restrictions end.

Services suspended when lockdown started and which will resume December 2nd include libraries and weddings. Adult learning courses will continue online, pending a review next month (January). The Norwich Castle, Tide and Time and Lynn Museums will reopen from 3rd December.

All council services will comply with the tier two rules that will apply to Norfolk from December 2nd.

Council leader Councillor Andrew Proctor said: “During lockdown,

halls. Cinemas, theatres and concert halls can stay open beyond 11pm in order to conclude performances that start before 10pm • public attendance at outdoor and indoor events (performances and shows) is permitted, limited to whichever is lower: 50% capacity, or either 2,000 people outdoors or 1,000 people indoors • public attendance at spectator sport and business events can resume inside and outside, subject to social contact rules and limited to whichever is lower: 50% capacity, or either 2,000 people outdoors or 1,000 people indoors • places of worship remain open but you must not socialise with people from outside of your household or support bubble while you are indoors there, unless a legal exemption applies • weddings and funerals can go ahead with restrictions on numbers of attendees – 15 people can attend wedding ceremonies and receptions, 30 people can attend funeral ceremonies, and 15 people can attend linked commemorative events such as wakes or stonesettings. • organised outdoor sport, and physical activity and exercise classes can continue • organised indoor sport, physical activity and exercise classes will only be permitted if it is possible for people to avoid mixing with people they do not live with (or share a support bubble with). There are exceptions for indoor disability sport, sport for educational purposes and supervised sport and physical activity for under-18s, which can take place with larger groups mixing • you can continue to travel to venues or amenities which are open, but should aim to reduce the number of journeys you make where possible • if you live in a tier 2 area, you must continue to follow tier 2 rules when you travel to a tier 1 area. Avoid travel to or overnight stays in tier 3 areas other than where necessary, such as for work, education, youth services, to receive medical treatment, or because of caring responsibilities. You can travel through a tier 3 area as a part of a longer journey

we continued to support vulnerable people and kept schools, public transport and recycling sites operating. All our services will operate in a Covid-secure manner and it’s really important we follow the Government’s rules, to minimise the spread of the virus. If we all do this, we stand a better chance of moving into tier one as soon as possible and getting on the path to a more normal life next year.”

The council will continue to monitor its services and, if regulations and circumstances change, it will review its current plans. The council’s website – www.norfolk.gov.uk – features the latest, updated information.

Residents in Norfolk are being reminded that they are the most important book a test. Stay in isolation until you receive your results, which will link in the Test and Trace system The steps to take if you or any member of your household display Covid 19 symptoms are simple and can be key in preventing infections being spread. If you are symptomatic you must isolate as soon as you notice symptoms and to have no face to face contact with anyone outside of your household. It is important to do this straight away, and for everyone in the household to isolate as they could also be infectious even without symptoms. As soon as you isolate, visit www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119 to

Norfolk’s Covid Winter Support scheme opens to residents

Anyone in Norfolk suffering financial hardship this winter could receive help and support thanks to a new scheme that launches December 2nd. Norfolk County Council, alongside local councils across Norfolk, is aiming to support as many residents as possible this winter to access financial and other support if they are facing hardship. The scheme is particularly aimed at families and will provide support for those suffering financial hardship over the winter months due to Covid-19. Support is available with food and utility bills. Applications to the new support scheme can be made online, via the existing Norfolk Assistance Scheme pages at www.norfolk.gov.uk/NAS or applicants can call 0344 800 8020. From Wednesday 2 December, assistance in applying online will also be available through Norfolk Libraries. In addition to this scheme we are working with food voucher company Edenred to provide support for all those eligible for free school meals, children in the early years who receive pupil premium and all of the council’s care leavers during the Christmas holidays. We are encouraging eligible families to register and apply for free school meals through their school, so that they begin to receive support in time for the school holidays. Cllr Andrew Proctor, Leader of Norfolk County Council, said: “The impact of Covid-19 on households in Norfolk has been huge, and we know some people have found it hard to get by as a result. There is no reason anyone in Norfolk should have to go hungry or cold this winter, and this scheme will help people in need through the coldest months of the year. Whether it’s food or bills, our Winter Support scheme offers a lifeline to those worst hit by this pandemic and its effects. I’d encourage those who need help to apply and get the support they need.” The Covid Winter Support scheme can help with: • Day to day living costs, including food and energy bills • Daily essentials such as toiletries, sanitary products and nappies • Food vouchers for the school holidays As part of the wider package of support for families this winter, T TO O SL SLOW OW THE SP SPREAD READ OF C CORONAVIRUS ORONA NORFOLK OLK ORONAV VIRUS IN NORF the council is also extending the Norfolk Assistance Scheme, which already provides support for food, fuel, clothes and other essential WE’VE W E’VE DONE IT BEF BEFORE, ORE, household items to SO THIS TIME WE’RE WE’RE Norfolk’s residents BETTER PREPARED BET TER P REPARED REP ARED experiencing hardship. Keeping yourselves and others safe

Coronavirus is still with us. Cases in Norfolk are low and we want to keep them that way. The best thing to do to protect ourselves and others is to continue to wash our hands regularly, keep our distance from others and wear a face covering in shops and on public transport. To protect others, you and everyone living in your house should isolate straight away if you show symptoms. The symptoms are: a new continuous cough; fever; or a loss or change in your taste and smell. As soon as you isolate, visit www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119 to book a test. Everyone is eligible to get a test if they have symptoms. You can choose either a drive-through test or a home test kit. Stay in isolation until you receive your results, which will include instructions on what to do next. NHS Test and Trace will contact people who test positive for Covid-19. They will ask you about who you have been in contact with from two days before onset of symptoms to seven days after. This will identify people at risk who could pass on the virus before (or without) showing symptoms themselves. For more information about how to stay safe and how to get support if you need it whilst isolating visit: norfolk.gov.uk/coronavirus

include instructions on what to do next. Cllr Bill Borrett, Norfolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, said: “This isn’t just about protecting ourselves, but making sure we all play our part to protect everyone around us. We all have friends and family that we want to keep safe – whether that’s parents, elderly grandparents, and even our children. And we need everyone to play their part to help us do that. We all have to work together to keep each other safe.” Cath Byford, Chief Nurse with NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Our call to everyone is, if you have coronavirus symptoms then self-isolate, get a test and help us track down people you have been in contact with. It’s one way that together we can beat this virus.” But Test and Trace isn’t only about symptomatic individuals: when a positive test result arrives, teams of contact tracers will search for everyone the Covid positive individual has been in recent contact with and will alert them. If you are alerted by NHS Test and Trace, you must isolate for 14 days after your contact with the individual. If you develop symptoms, you must book a test at the NHS coronavirus website and your household must isolate.

A Norfolk Local Outbreak Control Plan has been launched under the strapline Protect Ourselves, Protect Others, Protect Norfolk to set out how the county will support the national NHS Test and Trace programme to prevent and contain the spread of coronavirus. The plan sets out how Norfolk’s Public Health will work with a range of County Council departments and community partners to prevent local outbreaks in the first place. However, if outbreaks do occur, the plan sets out how they will be tracked in specific work places, settings, and communities and managed to limit further transmission. Also detailed is how Norfolk residents can find further guidance and support. Norfolk’s Director of Public Health has led on the development of our Local Outbreak Control Plan in partnership with district councils, NHS Chief Executives and the Norfolk Resilience Forum. It was developed after the Government announced that every area of England should produce a plan to prevent and manage local outbreaks of coronavirus as lockdown measures are eased. Prevention is key, and with further restrictions having been lifted, measures such as hand washing, social distancing in public places, and encouraging people to access testing immediately if they are unwell, are more important than ever. Friends of Kelling Hospital

From the outset of the pandemic The Friends council has continued to Poppy Skipp hold virtual bi-monthly Independent Consultant meetings. Support Available for home parties, orders, continues to be catalogue fairies and much more provided for both staff and patients at Kelling, 07502 950280 and for other key poppyskipp233@gmail.com medical workers in the Facebook/Instagram: Poppy’s Pampering community. Hand cream has been bought for all staff and additional magazines and daily newspapers have been provided for patients in order to facilitate individual use. Christmas is a time to celebrate for both patients and staff and Council has again agreed to give a present to each patient and to pay for a range of snack items for staff to enjoy. Items already purchased and delivered to the ward for patient use include 8 footstools, a ToTo lateral turning system and an Arjo Sarah Steady standing device. The mattress turns a patient automatically to avoid bed sores and the improved ladder system used in physiotherapy needs one person only to help a patient to stand. Two devices have been ordered to help patients hear what nurses are saying when using a mask. Also under consideration is for a toilet situated near The Garden Room to be adapted for wheelchair users. Unfortunately, it has been necessary to cancel planned fund-raising events for the time being, but a full programme will be planned for when the regulations allow. In the meantime supporters wishing to contribute to this charity are invited to donate through our online giving site www.give.net/20183877. Tribute to John Chandler (Notchy)

We were all saddened by the news of the death of John Chandler (Notchy) on Tuesday November 3rd. A Musician and Holt’s most popular driving instructor. He was always fondly known as Notchy, the name he inherited from his father Wilfred, one of Holts many Gents Hairdressers at the time. We won’t go into why Wilfred was called Notchy but even John was known to go somewhere else for a trim on more than one occasion. Brought up with his older sister Joan at the rear of the small shop now part of Kings & Barnhams, his working life began at Bertie Bonds Pork Butchers in Bull Street Holt. Bertie’s son Norman was later to marry Joan. The job as a pork butcher was short lived when he joined Billy Dunhams School of Motoring, later taking it on himself and continuing for the next 55 years, only retiring last March. His expertise as a drummer was beginning to show for in 1963, he joined his first band “The Surf Riders” at Hempstead. The band was to include Mike Green who was to become a life time friend. I later joined them and we changed the name to ”5 by Five”. By the mid-sixties he was married and left the music to concentrate on his then School of Motoring. Also, at that time he became a very popular school bus driver, often having to stop to keep some of the rowdy boys in check. At the end of the sixties, along with Trevor Leeder, Mike and I got him out of music retirement and “East Coast “was formed. The early 70`s a whole new adventure started, we were signed by the Norwich based Chic Applin Agency and with a new name change “Fascinatin` Rhythm” we then set about summer seasons in Great Yarmouth and the Northern working men’s clubs in the Winter. When we were at home, he continued with his driving lessons and school bus runs. In the October of 1973 we were the first East Anglian act to appear on the popular TV show “New Faces”, I hasten to add we came last in the voting, but we liked to think someone had to hold everyone else up. With the very popular trio “Star” along with Mike & Trevor they were the resident band at the then Norwood Rooms in Norwich and Northrepps Country Club. In more recent years he was very well known with his disco. Life can be very cruel at times and almost twenty years ago he lost his

eldest son Sean to cancer. In 2015 his younger son Nicky the same way and then two years ago his sister Joan. No one will know how he felt inside but he put on a brave face continued with his driving and disco and was always ready with a joke and a laugh. I remember one occasion I went through a bad patch he was the first to phone with words of encouragement. A very keen sportsman playing squash and tennis and we have fond memories whenever we went away with the band, someone had to sit in the back of the van and hold his golf clubs. Holt will never be the same without him driving through with a pupil and as he passed giving you the royal wave and a lovely smile. On some occasions if he had a bad pupil, he would turn his head so they didn’t see and pull a funny face. He had a wonderful light-hearted approach to settle the nerves experienced by everyone when they first set out to drive and on more than one occasion taught three generations of one family. Holt has lost a true personality and a great many of us have all lost a great and dear friend. John Jarvis

My Birding Life

A new book from Moss Taylor

A passion or an obsession? This book clearly shows the ups and downs of birding from excellent and enjoyable adventures to disastrous cruising, leaving the reader wondering what will happen next. Although not born in Norfolk, Moss considers the county as his adoptive home, and his love of Norfolk shows throughout the book especially the last chapter entitled ‘Weybourne Camp – my spiritual home’.

The chapters are not always in chronological order but cover his different interests, such as ringing birds, travelling abroad, writing newspaper columns and publishing books. Each chapter stands alone and so it is easy to turn to the next one for a different subject. Throughout the book the text is accompanied by photos, the majority taken by the author, which add to the enjoyment. Moss takes us on a journey, which saw him turn his hobby into a profession, helped by his love of writing.

It is obvious that Moss willingly shares his time and knowledge with those who need help with bird identification and calls, especially young people, in the hope that they too will find the same pleasure in birdwatching. This book gives an extremely good insight into Moss's passion for birds starting with his early years and finishing in 2020, leaving us wanting more.

Sparrowhawk

My Birding Life has 192 pages and includes 138 colour photos. It retails at £20 including p&p or £18 if collected from the author. To order email moss.taylor@btinternet.com

All profits from the sale of the book will be going to the charity Love for Leo, set up by the author and his partner Robina Churchyard, which helps to finance equipment and treatment that is not available under the National Health Service, for Norfolk and Suffolk children with cerebral palsy.

Sheringham Shoal grant supports ‘new home' for Wells Sea Cadets A grant from the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund has made a significant contribution to Wells Sea Cadets being able to erect to erect and fit-out its own operational base, a modular building within the grounds of Alderman Peel High School in Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk. The Wells Sea Cadet Unit, TS Eliza Adams, was established in late 2017 and was accepted as part of the Cadet Expansion Programme, a joint MoD and DfE initiative, in March 2019. This also resulted in a partnership with The Wensum Trust and a permanent home in Alderman Peel High School. Later that year the Unit successfully completed its trial period and was officially

recognised by the MoD (Navy) and affiliated to the Marine White-throated Hummingbird Society and Sea Cadets (MSSC). Although the Sea Cadets are able to use the halls and other areas within AHPS, storage and administration space within the school is at a premium, so it was decided that a dedicated Sea Cadet space would be beneficial and would promote the ‘Sea Cadet Experience' within the school. The funding for the building project (in excess of £50,000) was provided by the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund, MSSC Property Fund, local businesses, Unit funds and APHS. The purpose-built modular building has been supplied by local company Anglo-Scottish (Southern) Limited. Wells Sea Cadets Chairman Noel Wheatley MBE is delighted with the outcome of the building project. He said: "The building, which was completed in time for the commencement of the APHS 2020/21 academic year, provides the Sea Cadets with two dedicated training areas with state-of-the-art IT and AV provision, a uniform store and administration space as well as providing some extra classroom space for our friends at APHS" The aim of the Sea Cadet Corps (SCC) is to give young people the best possible head start in life through nautical adventure and fun based on the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy. "Much of what is undertaken by the Sea Cadets is relevant to the grant criteria of the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund, particularly the focus on the marine environment and marine safety, so we were very pleased to provide grant funding for this project," said Karl Butler, the Power Plant Manager of the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm. Alastair Ogle is the Principal at APHS, and he said: "The Sea Cadets have made excellent progress, with over 300 qualifications gained since the start of the trial period, including RYA sailing, power boating and windsurfing, British canoeing, British rowing, marine engineering, navigation, first aid, cyber security seamanship and communications." The Sea Cadets were kept ‘virtually' engaged during the COVID-19 lockdown, and the Unit recently gained permission to restart training sessions under COVID-secure guidance.

With very mixed emotions I have to announce after 33 years of the salon being in The Shirehall, Holt started by Sarah Woodrow in December 1987, I have been unable to negotiate a new lease with the new landlord. So we will be relocating to temporary premises with ample free parking in a purpose built, warm, cosy garden salon 3 miles from Holt in nearby Briston in January 2021.

I was lucky enough to start working with Sarah in 2001 and then took over the business in March 2006 and ever since enjoyed working with my team and my lovely clients.

This is very much a new chapter for The Body & Face Place and, after a difficult and uncertain 2020 due to COVID-19, we would like to thank all of our clients for their continued support & we very much look forward to seeing you at our new venue! Mrs Cummings-Knight added: “It’s up to people to make their own decisions of whether they want to socialise, but there are so many who have missed the contact outside their homes so it’s great for them.”

Dementia Friendly status was in 2018!

Some of you may have read the article by Daniel Moxon in the October 18th, 2020 edition of the EDP, in which Jennie Cummings-Knight, Chair of Trustees at Age Concern North Norfolk acknowledged the importance of social interaction for us all but in particular for those with dementia. She said: “Social interaction is one of the best things you can do to avoid dementia getting worse, especially in its early stages, so lockdown in March was absolutely the worst thing for those people at that time.”

The Day Centre is open Tuesdays through to Friday. Our home cooked lunches are back on the menu!

Whilst our trained Care Staff can provide assistance, fun activities or just a chat. We can currently only open from 12pm to 3pm, but hope soon to be back to our full day service.

Age Concern - North Norfolk gained Dementia Friendly status in November 2018 and has worked hard to help people experiencing loneliness and isolation. But it was not until September that Age Concern was able to reopen and start to invite people back to the Day Centre. As we come out of another lockdown and find ourselves in Tier 2 we, at Age Concern want to reassure those older members of our community, who must continue to take care as winter approaches, that the Day Centre in Cremer Street is open to offer company, support, a cooked lunch or even an assisted bath in our state-of-the-art facility.

For those of you who may be isolating, we can still offer a friendly face, a befriending phone call and even that cooked meal through our ’Meals on Heels’ service. Due to restrictions and social distancing, we have to limit numbers at the Day Centre, so booking is important to help with planning and ensuring we can support individual needs.

During these unprecedented times, Age Concern - North Norfolk Chair of communities, neighbours and Trustees Jennie Cummings-Knight. friends have done much to offer Amy Elizabeth Photography support to Credit: Archant each other and we are all grateful for that.

Lunch at Age Concern Day Centre. (Serena Waite-Shores)

But if you or a family member or neighbour might benefit from a visit to the Day Centre, then please call us or pass on our contact details and come along for a Trial Day to see what you think. Contact Alison on 01263 821188 or via email ageconcernad@gmail.com We look forward to meeting you.

Christmas Food Facts

According to research the strain of cooking the big Christmas dinner sees the average Brit start to sip their ďŹ rst alcoholic drink at 11.48am. The UK Brussels Sprouts industry is worth ÂŁ650 million, and the area of the country covered by Brussels Sprouts ďŹ elds is the equivalent to 3,240 football pitches. Before turkey, the traditional Christmas meal in England was a pig’s head and mustard. It wasn’t until Henry VIII had turkey for Christmas in the sixteenth century that it became a must-have on the Christmas table.

By Derek Baldry, Director Regional Accounting Services Limited We are fast approaching the online ďŹ ling deadline for the 2020 tax year, in 3 months Self-Assessments for all self-employed and partnerships are due to be with HMRC. The last ďŹ ling date is the 31st January 2021, HRMC do not allow a grace period beyond this date, unless there are exceptional circumstances. Failing to ďŹ le on time will incur an immediate penalty of ÂŁ100, the penalties can increase up to ÂŁ1600. There may be additional penalties and interest for late payment of the tax due. This time of year, accountants are generally very busy dealing with their existing client’s needs, therefore taking on additional clients, it may not be possible to guarantee ďŹ ling on time. This year the situation maybe exacerbated due to the Covid 19 and the issues surrounding the management of the virus. Therefore, if you do not have arrangements in place for ďŹ ling your 2020 Self-Assessment, I would encourage you to speak with an accountant at the earliest opportunity. We at Regional Accounting Services are just completing a reorganisation programme and currently do have some vacancies for new clients. If you are not sure if you need to ďŹ le a return please call 01263 340150 or email info@ras-uk.com for an initial free discussion without obligation.

MonaLisa Touch Laser Therapy is available at the Coltishall Clinic

MonaLisa Touch offers a new method, with a unique concept, to restore the women’s health and it represents a truly decisive solution for: • Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM) • Dyspareunia • Pain • Itching • Mild Mixed Urinary Incontinence • Low oestrogen symptoms after childbirth MonaLisa Touch is the only laser therapy fully recognized by International Scientific Community and supported by Clinical Publications. This is a painless laser therapy that uses lasers to reshape and regenerate women’s tissue that may have started to degenerate.

symptoms associated with mild urinary incontinence. A tissue regeneration process lasting several weeks is triggered. Stimulation occurs immediately and improvements can be seen after the first treatment. This minimally invasive, painless procedure is usually completed in five minutes.

Afterwards No recovery time is needed. You’ll be able to leave the clinic immediately afterwards and carry on with your normal daily activities. You should start seeing improvements in your symptoms after one treatment, but three treatments are often required to maximise improvements. Feeling of loose tissue, itching, burning, dryness and pain during sex should all be significantly reduced.

How it works MonaLisa Touch works by applying a gentle laser therapy to your intimate areas. This stimulates the production of new collagen, rehydrating and tightening the membrane lining. Your consultant will administer treatment in tiny dots, meaning only a tiny area is affected at a time. What Happens The laser gently acts through a special scanner, creating indistinguishable micro-treated areas that are required for triggering the production of new collagen, which is the main protein found in structural tissue. The laser’s action safely and painlessly reactivates the proper function of the intimate areas, while also improving the www.holtchronicle.co.uk

SPORT AND RECREATION A FOOTBALL QUIZ TO TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF ‘THE BEAUTIFUL GAME’

Holt Rugby determined to maintain spirits

In a week which brought both bad and good news, Holt Rugby Club demonstrated their determination to keep the game going and offer their supporters some sort of spectacle under the tightest of constraints. On Halloween Saturday the club acted as hosts for a touch rugby tournament. Despite the dreadful October weather, the club held an attractive and competitive contest at Bridge Road. Both Holt and local rivals North Walsham fielded two teams each. Holt A ran out comfortable winners against North Walsham B in the first game; North Walsham A then defeated Holt B; North Walsham then won the battle of the B sides. The final game saw a close-run contest between the two A teams with the visiting side emerging just on top. However, as Holt Chairman Martyn Jackson put it: “The occasion was far more important than the result. It is to the immense credit of all concerned that, while observing strict precautions, we were able to hold the event. A lot of thought and effort was required and we succeeded”. The bad news is that there will be no full 15 -a-side competition this year. The English Rugby Union had decided that, whenever restrictions are eased, it will be too late to have effective league rugby with promotion and relegation. The good news is that Holt’s most distinguished old boy, Ben Youngs, secured his 100th English cap on the same day as the touch rugby tournament. He scored two tries against Italy and England went on to win the delayed six nations and Ben was man of the match. The club are confident that the production line of players is in good shape and that there will be more top-class players in the making.

Founder Members of the Football League quiz 1 point awarded times by the question number (75 points possible) 1. In which country are Fiorentina based? 2. Solve anagram …. generous flax… A very good former manager in the Premier League 3. Who was in goal for Manchester United when the lost the 2005 FA Cup final shoot out? Pictured left 4. Whose used to play at the Baseball Ground? 5. Who were the last English team to win the European Cup-Winners Cup in the 1990s? 6. Who was the first 'Footballer of the Year' in 1948? 7. Which ex-England International, with 57 caps, started his career at Crystal Palace, moved to Aston Villa and then to his third and final club, where he also managed? 8. Which country first beat England at Wembley in a World Cup game? 9. Which is the only club to have won the European Cup more times than they have won their own domestic league? 10. Which ex-Norwich City player won his only England B international cap against Chile B in 1998?

Date

285. Mate in two moves

Solution to No. 284: 1. Kg2, no threat. 1… Bxd4+ 2. Bf2; 1… Bc3+ 2. Bd2; 1… Bc1+ 2. Bc2; 1… Kc1 2. Bc3. Splendid retreating key, moving into 3 checks parried by interpositions (Cross-Check theme) but enabling 2. Bf2 to cut off the black Bd4 as well as parrying the R check.

In No. 285 two of Black’s K flights are already provided with mates, and the key-move deals with the third flight rather prettily. Gameplayers, who might otherwise dismiss these problems as trivial wins for White, could imagine that they have given Black odds of having to mate in (say) 40 moves, and they now have to play White’s 39th! But in 99.9% cases, the idea is to show some beautiful idea (theme), though a nice key is always a bonus. Difficulty 2.
