A Note from the Editor
Lost World
Greetings from a cold, damp and windy cliff top in Sheringham. Just when all seems gloomy and dark there are some small glimmers of something better on the horizon. Nights are starting to draw out a little, the garden is beginning to show some new life and the vaccine roll out has started apace. North Norfolk infection numbers are slowly but steadily falling, could it be time to take a breath and hope that better times are ahead? We can’t afford to relax rules yet and there is still a long way to go, but thanks to the dedicated work of our scientists, NHS workers, voluntary workers and all those working so hard to get us all vaccinated, there is some light at the end of the tunnel. Three new vaccination centres are now open in our area so no excuses for not responding when you get the call for your jab, as the old advert said, ‘you know it makes sense’.

Valentine’s Day is upon us and whilst that special meal out is not possible this year, perhaps it is time to do something different to show you care this year. Many of our local traders are offering click and collect or online ordering including florists, gift shops and chocolatiers. Why not include a promissory note in your sweetheart’s card for that night out or special meal, there is nothing like something to look forward to in these uncertain times. Alternatively, put some of those home cooking skills you have been honing to work and impress with something fabulous. Whatever you decide, do something special for someone and make their day. Enjoy your February magazine. Keep well and safe.
Jo – Editor.

My father was a teamsman. This meant that he was in charge of all the horses on the farm, starting earlier than anyone else to prepare them for the day’s work and finishing last. My mother cared for us and also took in washing. We lived on The Meadow, and most meat in our meals came from what we could catch. We were luckier than some because we lived with my father’s parents so there was a wage from Grandad and later his pension, 10 shillings (50p) per week. This unfortunately meant I had to share a bed with my grandad! I had two elder sisters, so our tiny cottage was very full. Our cottage on The Meadow, was tied to the farm where my Father worked so if there was any dispute with the farmer you lost your home as well as your job. The Meadow was a large field that was a sort of common space in our village. Things like fetes and sales were held there, but it was also used as a short-term grazing place for cattle. My father set snares around the house and one of my jobs was to cover any rabbits with a tin bath to stop them squealing until father got up to deal with them. A job I really hated was holding a lamp to light my father while he cut the chickens’ throats to bleed them. We reared some every year for Christmas. One year Father reared some geese, but they were so friendly that come Christmas, he could not bear to kill them and had to sell them and buy our meat instead. My Mother used her boiling copper from the washing business to cook peoples’ Christmas puddings. Our Christmas stockings consisted of an orange, a piece of chocolate and one other gift. I think the girls might have had something that smelled nice and I got things like socks. My Mother was such a good cook. We never went hungry thanks to those rabbits, which were everywhere then, and my Father’s efforts in the vegetable garden. She did make treats too such as shortcake. A piece of short cake was left out for Father Christmas on Christmas Eve along with a glass of something. I still remember sneaking down one Christmas Eve along with my sisters and the horror when we saw the shortcake had been eaten but there was no sign of presents.

Local Councillor Challenges Lifting of Ban on Neonicotinoid Pesticide
North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Environment, Liberal Democrat councillor Nigel Lloyd, has written to George Eustice MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs asking him to reconsider the recent Government decision to lift the ban on pesticides that contain Neonicotinoid Thiamethoxam. These Chemicals were banned by the Government in 2017. At that time, the Government announced that scientific evidence suggests that the environmental risks posed by neonicotinoids – particularly to our bees and pollinators – are greater than previously understood, supporting the case for further restrictions. Research estimates the value to the UK’s 1,500 species of pollinators to crops at £400-680million per year due to improved productivity. The Environment Secretary Michael Gove said in 2017: ‘The weight of evidence now shows the risks neonicotinoids pose to our environment, particularly to the bees and other pollinators which play such a key part in our £100bn food industry, is greater than previously understood. I believe this justifies further restrictions on their use. We cannot afford to put our pollinator populations at risk.’ It is therefore extremely disappointing that these dangerous chemicals will once again be entering the environment. North Norfolk Councillors have been lobbied by constituents on this matter, their concerns are shared by the Bumblebee Trust and the Wildlife Trusts who are actively considering a legal challenge to this decision. The letter says: ‘I am writing to express my dismay that pesticides containing Neonicotinoid Thiamethoxam have been given emergency use approval by your government, overturning a ban introduced in 2018. The ban was introduced as a result of overwhelming scientific evidence of the negative impacts on bees and other pollinators. Indeed, the then environment secretary Michael Gove endorsed this ban in 2017. Your Government has a history of supporting a ban when in 2018 it upheld it after an application for 'emergency use' was put before them
( [ W U D + D Q G V
because of the potential harmful impact on bees and pollinators. It is extremely disappointing that the Government has now taken a U turn on its original ban of these dangerous chemicals. To those who are concerned about the environment and wildlife in the UK the decision is a great cause for concern. The science remains clear on neonicotinoid use and nothing has changed since the 2018 ban. Bees and other pollinators are not just good for the ecosystem, they are essential! Therefore, I urge you to reconsider allowing this dangerous pesticide to be reintroduced into the environment and instead re-commit to protecting the bees, other wildlife, and the wider environment.’ Cllr. Nigel Lloyd nigel.lloyd@north-norfolk.gov.uk 07954 055966 The Government position on this issue is as follows: After careful consideration of all the issues, the government has decided to grant an application for emergency authorisation to allow use of a product containing the neonicotinoid thiamethoxam for the treatment of sugar beet seed in 2021. This is in recognition of the potential danger posed to the 2021 crop from beet yellows virus. An emergency authorisation for the short-term use of a product (and placing on the market for no more than 120 days) may be granted if the following requirements are met: • the authorisation appears necessary because of a danger which cannot be contained by any other reasonable means (the case for need) • use of the product will be limited and controlled • there are special circumstances Editor’s Note Norfolk is a major producer of sugar beet which supports thousands of jobs within the industry. 3000 growers in East Anglia and the East Midlands supply half of the UK sugar supply. The Glaven Caring update –
First Glimpse of Spring
Meals on Wheels and Village Reps During lockdown, The Glaven Caring charity, based in Blakeney, has been running a ‘Meals on Wheels' delivery service to its vulnerable clients. Since lockdown started The Glaven has delivered over 3100 hot meals. The lunch meals are cooked by our resident cook Jill Craske and then delivered by our teams of volunteers to our elderly and frail customers - all residents of the 12 villages of the Glaven Valley and Holt Town. Do you know anyone who might like a hot meal delivered any weekday, Monday to Friday? The two course meals cost £8.50 each. Although day care facilities at The Glaven Centre have been reduced over lockdown, we are still offering chiropody services and assisted bathing. Our nurses are fully trained and take full anti-Covid precautions and wear PPE. Please contact Keith Barnes, The Glaven Manager, on 01263 740762 or email him on glavencentre1@ btinternet.com if you or someone you know might benefit from these services. We are all looking forward to the lifting of lockdown and are oiling the wheels to ensure a quick return to full services. To this end, we are looking for volunteers who might like to join our Management Committee as Village Reps. This team are actively involved in reviewing the running of the centre to fulfil the needs of our clients. Our Village Reps provide a vital link between the villages and the charity. Meetings take place regularly once a month. If this sounds of interest, please do ring Keith Barnes and he will be able to tell you more. We do hope to hear from you! www.glavencaring.co.uk
Just when you thought winter was going to last forever, there are signs of better days to come. Hanne Siebers from the National Trust took a picture of these snowdrops, the first sign that spring is on its way.
Do you view Toads as slimy little creatures that give you the shivers? Or do you recognise them for what they are and what they do. Many toads live in gardens where they eat slugs and other pests and so are very beneficial to gardeners. But they can be very vulnerable. Once a year at migration time, they always return to their birth-pond to spawn and often a road near the pond will run across their path. They move soon after dusk when road traffic can be at its worst and visibility poor. At these times, many thousands of toads across Norfolk become traffic casualties. In our vicinity, there are two such ponds, Rookery Pit in Hempstead and Selbrigg Pond in Selbrigg. For some years now, a small band of volunteers has worked at both locations during the migration season (mid-February to early/mid-April), moving toads each evening to safety. In 2020, over 10,000 toads and frogs were saved between the two ponds, so the effort really does pay off! We are always in need of more volunteers, so if anyone from the local area is interested, please consider volunteering. We normally have a kick-off meeting in the Feathers in Holt around now but this year it’s down to Emails and telephones, thanks to Covid. However, the patrols should be able to continue as it constitutes outdoor exercise with one other person – we patrol in pairs – suitably socially distanced. For more information, please let either myself or Tim know, and we can provide more details of what’s involved. It’s not arduous and very satisfying! Our contact details are below, and we look forward to hearing from you! For more information, please visit…. http://www.toadwatch.org. Thank you for your support. Acupuncture
Well, I am back in my scrubs and a mask and the rustling of the plastic apron. Feels like both a long time ago and just yesterday when I was in the same gear working in the NHS. I consider wearing a mask essential and have moved myself into FFP2s to further protect myself and my clients, this brings me to my main gripe, why we are not given information on how and which masks to wear to be effective. Anyhow for me the good news is, I am back in my acupuncture practice. During the first lock down many lessons were learnt about how practitioners could make work secure enough to start treating again. The clinic is maintained to keep both practitioner and client safe and what became apparent in the first lock down with loss of services, was how many people have treatment with practitioners such as acupuncturists for pain, injury and a host of other health issues, and that need does not suddenly go away. Our GPs are overstretched more than ever and if I can help by keeping my clinic going, I am very happy to do so. I suspect the following years will be busy with the healthrelated effects from Covid19 for which acupuncture is already being used as a treatment. There will also be increased people seeking help with mobility and pain control, for example painful joints, because of delays in getting hospital treatment. I can be contacted on Mobile 07790 264515 email alisoncourtney3@gmail.com

For now, I have copied below Norfolk’s Director of Public Health earlier statement. Also copied are the usual websites which I am assured are updated regularly – this means that whatever changes come into play you can check out the latest and what is happening including where your family and friends live. Slow fall in Covid cases means no room for complacency - Covid cases are starting to fall across Norfolk – but the rate of reduction is slow, and we can’t ease restrictions yet. That is the message from Norfolk’s director of public health, Dr Louise Smith, who is urging people to continue to follow the Government’s guidelines and get vaccinated, when an appointment is offered. Norfolk’s Covid rate has dipped below 400 for the first time in weeks, to 377 per 100,000. Dr Smith said: “It’s encouraging to see cases starting to fall across every part of Norfolk due to the national lockdown restrictions. We cannot be complacent – the drop is slow, and numbers could quickly move the other way if we started to ease off. That is why it’s so important to keep following the rules, as challenging as that is for everyone. It’s really encouraging to see the roll-out of the vaccination programme, so that gives us the longer-term hope that we can slowly return to something closer to normal.” COVID-19 Information: Information is available at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/localrestriction-tiers-what-you-need-to-know. Domestic abuse during the pandemic
The government has made it clear that coronavirus restrictions do not apply if you need to leave your home to escape domestic abuse. If you are faced with immediate danger, call 999. Many kinds of domestic abuse are criminal offences, and the police can arrest, caution or charge the perpetrator.
By Zuzanna Pogorzelska,
Family Solicitor, Hayes + Storr
Domestic abuse has surged during the pandemic. The UN has described the worldwide increase in domestic abuse as the “shadow pandemic”. According to Victim Support, over 11,500 more people than usual accessed their services between the 23rd March and 1st November 2020. Additionally, train companies in the UK are offering free travel to refuges for men, women and children fleeing domestic abuse.
What is domestic abuse?
Anyone can be a victim of domestic abuse, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, socio-economic status, sexuality, or background. In 2015, the government’s definition of domestic violence was changed to ‘domestic abuse’ to include controlling and coercive behaviour; a more subtle form of abuse that doesn’t always involve physical violence. This can encompass, but is not limited to, psychological, physical, sexual, financial, and emotional abuse.
What is controlling and coercive behaviour?
Domestic abuse isn’t always physical. Coercive control is when someone uses manipulative behaviour to isolate their partner. The perpetrator will often monitor their partners behaviour, exploit them, break down their support network, create a sense of fear, and deprive them of their autonomy so they believe they have no alternative other than to stay with their abuser. According to Professor Evan Stark, a leading expert on coercive control: “the victim becomes captive in an unreal world created by the abuser, entrapped in a world of confusion, contradiction and fear.”
I’m in an abusive relationship. What can I do?
During the pandemic, it has been harder for people to escape their abusers but there is never an excuse to put up with domestic abuse.
If you feel you must leave the family home, you (& your children if you have any) could:
• stay with relatives or friends, • stay in a refuge, • get emergency accommodation from your local authority under homeless persons’ law – this will usually mean a bed and breakfast hostel, or; • get private rented accommodation
If you are in an abusive relationship, you can get legal protection by applying for the following orders:
• Non-Molestation Order: to stop your partner harming or threatening you • Occupation Order: where you stay at home and your partner has to leave Further down the line, a solicitor who is experienced in family law can advise you on: • getting your property back or making you the legal owner of your home • deciding who your children can live with and who can see them • ending your marriage or civil partnership
Whatever you decide to do, there are many local and national organisations that can help. For advice on family law and other legal matters, call Hayes + Storr on 01263 712835.

Residents of care homes across Norfolk, their families and friends, and care home staff, have spoken frankly about their experiences during the pandemic in a recently published report from Healthwatch Norfolk. The report, which was submitted to Norfolk County Council (NCC) in December, highlights a range of challenges, including the mental health of residents and staff and communication with families. One key finding was that 87% of residents felt their care home staff had helped them to feel safe throughout the pandemic. The County Council commissioned Healthwatch Norfolk, an independent organisation, to collect this feedback. The findings can then be used by NCC’s Adult Social Care team to review the support provided in nursing and residential homes, where COVID-19 continues to pose serious risks. In total, Healthwatch Norfolk heard from 152 people and collected feedback from 41 different care homes across the county. Of these responses, 109 were residents, 31 were staff, and 35 were relatives or friends.
Despite this, many comments indicated the difficulties in making information user-friendly for residents. This was particularly evident in staff that work with residents with dementia, as one carer expressed: “The majority of our residents have varying levels of dementia, so I can inform them, but depending on the individual they may not be able to retain the information or understand what the changes mean.”
The feedback received has prompted Healthwatch Norfolk to make several recommendations to Norfolk County Council and the wider care sector. These include “to work with local Primary Care providers and mental health trusts to explore how care homes can best support residents whose mental health has suffered as a result of COVID-19”, and for care providers to “seek to improve how decisions about changes to visiting are communicated to family and friends.” In response to Healthwatch Norfolk’s report, James Bullion, Norfolk County Council’s Executive Director of Adult Social Services, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the different health and care organisations for their hard work over this very challenging year – collaborative working has been exceptional and has made a huge impact on people’s care and lives. “Out of this situation, we’ve made some really positive changes to how we care for people. It’s important we don’t lose these and that we continue to build on them over the coming months. Recommendations from this report will help us to continually improve how we provide care for the future.”
Some key findings from the report include: • Whilst using PPE was recognised as a necessary precaution, many staff struggle wearing it all day and find it challenging to communicate with residents. To read the full report, please visit the Healthwatch Norfolk website. • Some staff noted difficulty arranging care for residents from healthcare professionals such as psychiatrists, GPs, care coordinators and dentists because of delays caused by COVID-19. • Friends/family had very varied experiences WANT A SWEETER DEAL ON YOUR INSURANCE? of being kept informed by their care home, ranging from regular **FREE PEN WITH ALL NEW QUOTATIONS** updates to feeling very out of the loop. **FREE BOX OF CHOCOLATES WITH ALL NEW POLICIES** • The vast majority of residents said that the staff had helped to make them **JUST MENTION THIS ADVERT WHEN YOU CONTACT US** feel safe. • Even though the normal programmes *Unoccupied Properties *Household Buildings & Contents ofentertainment have stopped, most *Holiday Lets & Second Homes *Cars, Vans, Taxis & Motorbikes staff are trying to help residents cope with the changes through organising *B&Bs / Guest Houses *Annual or Single Trip Travel their own internal activities. *Restaurants / Cafes *Property Owners • Friends/family shared mixed opinions about whether they have confidence in *Public / Employers Liability *Shops & Offices their loved one’s care home during another lockdown. After a short illness, Peter (aged 71) passed away at home on Friday 22nd January 2021, surrounded by his family. His wife, Diane, and children, Judith and Stuart, would like to thank the medical teams involved in his care, particularly Dr Rayner of the Holt Medical Practice and the District nurse team. Peter volunteered as a first responder for many years and organised the installation of defibrillators in Holt and the surrounding villages. There will be a small private funeral on 5th February and instead of sending flowers, Peter wished that any donations be made to the East Anglian Air Ambulance charity https://www.eaaa.org.uk/

FROM THE RECTOR: LIVING WITH COVID ~ an update PUBLIC WORSHIP: The continuing pandemic affects our daily lives and the life of the Church too. Following the advice of the Bishop of Norwich we suspended public worship in January. However, churches are permitted under Government rules to remain open and we hope to be able welcome people back for services as soon as we feel it is safe to do so. PRIVATE PRAYER: just because public worship is not happening it does not mean the daily rhythm of prayer at the Parish Church has ceased. Morning Prayer (9am) and Evening Prayer (5.30pm) and the daily Eucharist (9.30am) are said by the clergy. If you hear the bell being tolled please be assured that I am in church, with the angels and saints for company, praying for you all. The Archbishop of Canterbury has also invited everyone to pray for the nation each day at 6pm. More information and resources can be found at: www.churchofengland.org/resources/prayer-nation If you have a specific prayer request, please let me know or else you are very welcome to visit the church for your own private prayer. The Parish Church remains open every day and is a sacred space of peace and quiet. All Saints, High Kelling is open on Wednesdays and Sundays. You may also like to access the free phone line resource of hymns, reflections and prayers from the Church of England. DAILY HOPE & JOY Tel: 0800 804 8044 GOING LIVE: Who would have thought a year ago that we would be installing a professional camera system into the parish church to enable us to live stream services and concerts? We have been managing with a laptop to stream services via zoom but thanks to a very generous gift from the late Roger Percival we can now use professional equipment to broadcast on our own YouTube channel. Look out for the YouTube link on our home page on our website: www.holtchurch.org KEEPING IN CONTACT: One of the hardest things to cope with over the past year has been the loss of social interaction and the opportunities to meet with family and friends. We are keeping in touch with those on our data base (over 250 people) by telephone and emails. I am grateful to members of our phone calling team who phone individuals once a fortnight. We are also encouraging people to keep in contact with their neighbours and alert us to any need. Also, Monday morning coffee morning takes place on zoom at 11am, check our website for details. PASTORAL HELP LINE: 07393559028 Our pastoral helpline remains available to anyone in the Parish who are isolated, anxious, alone or in need. LITTLE LAMBS PARENT & TODDLER GROUP: Unfortunately, another casualty of the pandemic has been our parent and toddler group who have been unable to meet since last March. Those who lead the group are keeping in contact with a number of young families and continue to regularly put together 50 children’s activity bags to help keep young minds active. The spiritual heartbeat of the Church in the parish continues to be a source of comfort and strength for many and we seek to do whatever we can to meet people’s physical and emotional needs as well. Please do not hesitate to get in contact if you think the Church can help. www.holtchronicle.co.uk

Tracing a Gentleman
Dear Jo, I am writing to you in the hope of tracing a gentleman we have been trying to contact, we believe his name was Steven/Stephen. The gentleman concerned used to run a delightful café in Oakham, Rutland called the Castle Cottage Café, but we have now been informed that this closed down in September. We would like to thank him and wish him all the best for the future. My reason for contacting The Holt Chronicle is that we understand that his parents live in Holt. Thanking you. Yours sincerely,
David Harris.
Osteopathy in Holt
Irreplaceable
Dear Jo, I read Heather Bowes "The Last Lost World: Leslie George Kinsley" with great sadness. The accompanying photograph of him with his terrier reminded me that I had seen him in Briston but had not engaged in conversation with him: this is a great pity since we would have had much to speak about, and I would have been a very keen listener.
What a blessing it is, however, that he should have such a talented a friendly amanuensis as Heather Bowes whose friendship and secretarial skills have memorialized a precious life. She has done through The Holt Chronicle what Lilias Rider-Haggard did with two great Norfolk characters, elders in the first half of the Twentieth century, recognizing what made them special and making it immortal.
Being the grandson of a gamekeeper and worker of retrievers at shoots in Norfolk, I should have been very keen to hear of Leslie's Views on shooting past and present. I am very touched by his ethics which show that a good gamekeeper must, apart from providing sport, be a humane guardian of wildlife exercising care when involved with dispatch of anything be it game or predator. Before his keepering days, Les was an agricultural labourer and it would have been a fascinating question to ask him what capacity meant most to him. I suspect that, after some consideration, he would have said that his first calling was the land and the pride in its harvest. For men of his generation, love of the land was in the blood and the sport from it, would, therefore have come a glorious second.. Heather Bowes tells us of his sprucing her with leg-pulls, which, apart from amusing us, tells us that he retained the marvellous faculty of humour to the end. How gratifying it is to learn of a long life enriched by the vocations of rural life and displaying such an abundance of enjoyment. When such men as Les Kinsley pass on who will replace them? Yours sincerely, Richard Shepheard.
Thank You

From Holt Consulting Rooms
One of the main issues I’ve thought about recently is how to maintain good back and neck health during lockdown and beyond. It’s been wonderful to be able to treat back and neck problems as well other conditions in a new, Covid-safe environment at the Holt Consulting Rooms. We are following the guidance given to us by Public Health England as are all Allied Healthcare Professionals. I wanted to pass on some basic hints and tips to those of you who are working from home or might still be forced to remain indoors, perhaps due to shielding requirements, or are just getting less exercise due to the inclement weather and need advice to maintain better back and neck health during the pandemic. Get active and maintain activity levels: Back and neck joints need movement to stay healthy, and without regular activity, the spine can lose mobility, making it more vulnerable to strain or injuries. Walking, running, cycling, and Pilates are a few great examples of easily-accessible movement activities that can be sustained during lockdown and beyond. Why not try some of the many online classes, making sure you choose one suited to your ability. Posture: For most of us, improving how we stand and sit is critical in maintaining back and neck health. Ensuring the natural spinal curves are well maintained, by not slouching or slumping when sitting, and by standing tall, can go a long way to improving overall back and neck health. Sit less, stand more: Sitting for long periods of time is detrimental to back and neck health. Why not consider a stand-up desk when working, or if you do sit down to work, please ensure that you take micro breaks (standing up and moving for 60 seconds every 20 minutes). Preventative manual treatment: Utilising osteopathic preventative treatments can be a great way of improving and maintaining back and neck health during lockdown and beyond. Stay safe. John Davis. Guinea Pig Awareness Week at Toll Barn Vets!
inquisitive Guineas sticking their heads in and giving themselves eye ulcers from scratches from hay. High calcium treats such as Kale increases the chances of developing bladder and kidney stones, so these should only be fed in moderation. Join us for Guinea Pig Awareness Week or give us a call on 01692 407126 to find out much more about keeping your Guinea healthy and happy, and stay tuned for our next article where we share some VERY exciting news for our Rabbit patients!
As a proudly Accredited Gold Standard Rabbit Friendly Practice, Toll Barn Veterinary Centre has always been a keen participant in Rabbit Awareness Week, and our love of Guinea Pigs meant that we always opened the week for Guinea Pigs too! Well……Exciting News!!!! Guinea Pigs now have their very own Guinea Pig Awareness Week! Join us 22-28 March 2021 for all things Guinea Pig! Why is Guinea Pig Awareness so important? Guinea Pigs can make wonderful pets but they are prone to several health conditions which can prove very problematic. It is important to handle Guinea Pigs regularly and gently as they can be quite shy. Their average lifespan is between 4 and 8 years and they reach sexual maturity from 2 to 4 months of age, so always be on the look-out for sneaky litters in youngsters of mixed sexes! In mixed sex groups we can perform neutering from 4 months of age. It is important for Guinea Pigs to have other Guinea Pigs for company, but we don’t recommend keeping them with rabbits as they frequently pass diseases between the species which can prove fatal to the other species. It is best to keep them in same sex groups, or neutered pairs. Guinea Pigs need plenty of space with enough areas to hide away should they get worried. If kept outside they need a warm sheltered area to protect them from rain and wind, ideally with additional heating over colder nights. Guinea Pig teeth grow throughout their life and it is essential they have constant access to good quality hay to encourage grazing and dental wear. Ideally they should be fed pellets rather than muesli as this reduces selective feeding and provides a complete diet including essential Vitamin C. Guinea Pigs lack the enzyme to produce their own Vitamin C so providing it in food is essential. Hay should be kept in suitable mangers or troughs to reduce the chances of

Sweet Treat for Valentine’s Day
Method
We may not be able to indulge in fine dining this Valentine’s Day, but we can still make the effort to treat the object of our affection with something indulgent. Guaranteed to impress but surprisingly easy to make, this decadent roulade will have your sweetheart eating out of your hand, or at least licking their plate. If raspberries are not your thing, then substitute other fruit such as tinned black cherries, pureed banana, or other fruit of your choice, just make sure the fruit is well drained if using tinned. You could also add a little liqueur of your choice to the whipped cream for a boozy kick.
Chocolate and Raspberry Roulade
Ingredients
150g/5oz caster sugar 5 eggs, separated 50g/2oz cocoa powder (not drinking chocolate) For the filling 300ml/ ½ pint double cream 1-2 tablespoons icing sugar 1 punnet of raspberries (or 1 tin black cherries, drained or other fruit of your choice).
Preheat the oven to 180c/Gas 4. Grease and line a 13x9” swiss roll tin. Place a sheet of baking parchment bigger than the sponge tin on a cooling rack and dust with caster sugar, (I secure mine with bulldog clips). Whisk the egg yolks with the caster sugar until thick enough to leave a trail. Sift over the cocoa powder and fold in gently and evenly. Whisk the egg whites in a grease free bowl to the soft peak stage. Fold 1 tablespoon of the whisked egg white into the chocolate mixture to loosen it, then fold in the rest evenly. Scrape the mixture into the prepared tin and smooth the surface. Bake for 20 -25 minutes until well risen and springy to the touch. Turn out onto the baking parchment and cover with a clean, damp cloth until cool. Whip the cream with the icing sugar until it just holds its shape. When the sponge is cool, take a sharp knife and cut ¾ of the way through the sponge along the short side half an inch in, this will help when rolling the roulade. Spread the whipped cream evenly over the sponge and top evenly with the raspberries or other fruit. Carefully roll up the sponge from the cut edge, (an extra pair of hands may help at this stage) and sit on a plate with the roll end underneath. Decorate with extra whipped cream or chocolate shavings if desired. Don’t worry if the sponge cracks or the roll is not perfect, dust with icing sugar and it will still be delicious! Jo – editor.

Hedgehog Haven
Meet Matt, he came into care on 21st January. He was found lying fully exposed in the daytime, when hedgehogs should be curled up and be round in shape like a football. Matt was very clearly underweight as his back end was tapered and rugby ball shaped. With meds for lungworm, and to start with, some high calorie liquid food syringe feed, he is gaining weight slowly, so much so that I have now been able to move him from indoors into the hogspital shed, so should be fit & well in time for a Spring release.
HOT FOOD TO GO!
We are still offering our Meals on Heels service for lunch time, and can deliver a delicious hot, two course meal to your door for only £3.00. If you are interested, please contact Alison on 01263 821188, email: ageconcernad@gmail.com

Large scale Covid-19 vaccination centres
Large scale Covid-19 vaccination centres launch in Kings Lynn, Attleborough and North Walsham, accelerating the delivery of life saving jab
The NHS launches three more large scale Covid-19 vaccination centres in Kings Lynn, Attleborough and North Walsham this week as part of the biggest vaccination programme in NHS history. The centres will be located at:
· Kings Lynn Corn Exchange, Tuesday Market Place, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, PE30 1JW from Monday 1 February 2021 · Connaught Hall, Station Road, Attleborough, Norfolk, NR17 2AS from Wednesday 3 February 2021 · North Walsham Community Centre, New Road, North Walsham, Norfolk, NR28 9DE from Saturday 6 February 2021
The centres provide an additional option to the large-scale vaccination centre in the Castle Court Shopping Centre, Norwich and the vaccination hubs already successfully delivering vaccinations in local hospitals and by GPs across the county. Dr David Vickers, Medical Director, Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust which is co-ordinating delivery of the large vaccination centres across Norfolk and Waveney said: “We are delighted to be launching large vaccination centres in Kings Lynn,
Attleborough and North Walsham, joining the centre already successfully delivering this life saving vaccination at the Castle Quarter Shopping Centre in Norwich. Further centres will roll out in the coming weeks. “The centres are capable of delivering thousands of vaccines in the coming weeks and provide a major boost to our plans to offer protection to those who would benefit most as quickly as possible. “We’d like to say an enormous thank you to our amazing staff and volunteers for their incredible hard work, and also to colleagues at the Borough Council of King's Lynn & West Norfolk, Alive West Norfolk, the Trustees of Connaught Hall, and North Walsham Community Centre for letting us use their premises for this vital vaccination programme.” Letters are being sent out by the national booking service to people in the priority groups as determined by the national Joint Committee on Vaccinations and Immunisations (JCVI) who live up to a 45-minute drive from the centres, inviting them to book an appointment at their closest Centre either online or over the phone. We would encourage everyone to book an appointment when they receive a letter but if anyone has already received a jab since the letter was sent out please disregard it. If people would prefer to wait to be invited to attend a hospital or GP service, they are able to do so, or if they already have an appointment
booked for their vaccination with a hospital or GP service, they can choose to keep the appointment with their hospital or GP. Melanie Craig, Chief Executive, NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group added: “NHS staff are doing an incredible job to deliver what it is the largest vaccination programme in our history, at the same time as providing vital services for people who need our care. A significant number of Norfolk and Waveney’s most vulnerable patients have been vaccinated against COVID-19 and this new centre will accelerate progress even further. “Please don’t contact the NHS to seek a vaccine; we will contact you. When you are contacted, please attend your booked appointments. It is vital that you do not attend the Kings Lynn, Attleborough or North Walsham vaccination centres if you do not have an appointment as you will not be able to receive a vaccination. “I urge people across Norfolk and Waveney to continue following all the guidance to control the virus and save lives – that means staying at home as much as you can, and always remembering ‘hands, face and space; it’s also vital for people that have had a dose of the vaccine to continue following the same guidance.”
Stay home – don’t give Covid more chances
Covid spreads easily. Every time someone leaves their home, this creates new opportunities for spread of the virus. Keep these opportunities to a minimum by: Working from home whenever possible. Only sending children to education settings if necessary. Using online shopping where possible; if you have to visit shops, only go when necessary and don’t take anyone who doesn’t need to be there. Stay local for exercise – this means in your own village, town or part of the city where you live.

North Norfolk Photographic Society
Zoom continues to do a good job in keeping North Norfolk Photographic Society alive! The Society held a competition for digital (projected) images on January 20th and David Jordan came electronically from just outside Norwich to judge them. He offered constructive comments on all 72 images that had been entered, holding 18 photos for the ultimate awards. A difficult decision indeed as all photos were of outstanding beauty.
The theme was Landscape: Land, Sea, Urban. The decisions were to allot Gold, then Silver then Bronze awards, followed by Highly Commended and Commended. David Jordan gave out 2 Golds, 3 Silvers and 4 Bronzes – followed by 4 Highly Commended and 5 Commended. Scooping the Golds were Paul Richards (“When Surf Meets Sky”) and Paul Radden (Geothermal Iceland”). The Silvers were Liz Akers (“Seven Sisters”) Val Walker (“Light in the Canyon”) and Paul Richards (“Boulders and Slabs”). Boulders and slabs by Paul Awards of Bronze went to Diana Knight, Val Walker, Shirley Radden and Richards Andy Bamforth. Highly Commended were Colin Horwood, Lizzie Wallis, Malcolm English and Hanne Seibers; commended were Liz Akers, Diana Knight, Frederic Landes (twice) and Howard Denner. Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month at the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the club Secretary at secretary.nnps@gmail.com or see the club website at Seven Sisters by Liz Akers http://www.nnphotosoc.org/ If you would like to visit one of the Club's Zoom meetings ask the Secretary for details. Beautifully Rare
The idea of beauty is always shifting. Sometimes the rare stand out as being very attractive. It certainly goes for the melanistic seal pups on Blakeney Point. They are very rare, black and beautiful. Grey seals are born white but their coat changes colour when they shed their fur at about two to three weeks old. Normally they are grey like their name suggests. It’s only when they moult, and the black velvety coat is revealed that we can tell it's a melanistic seal. Melanism is the increased development of the dark-coloured pigment melanin. Research varies, but approximately 1 in 400 grey seals are melanistic. On my last seal shift in January, I found and photographed 10 melanistic pups. This isn’t the highest number we have seen, but it's the first year I have consequently been on the lookout and photographed all of them. If you ever come across a seal pup, please keep your distance and do not approach or disturb these wild animals in any way, as this may cause unnecessary stress. Here are some images for you to enjoy. Hanne Siebers. NT warden. Blog: https://fabfourblog.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hanne_siebers/

North Norfolk Taxis Association Celebrates Continued Success
years especially with the implementation of this new handbook which takes effect from 1st April 2021, but can only continue to be heard with everyone’s support. North Norfolk Taxi & Private Hire Association Website: NNTPHA.WEEBLY.COM
North Norfolk taxi & Private Hire Association was formed in 2012 to represent the trade & address issues that came about due to North Norfolk District Councils review of the taxi rules and regulations handbook. Secretary Steve Heels said over the years it has helped many members with various issues they've encountered. With over 150 members & a committee with over 80 years combined experience in the trade it has worked at forming a good working relationship with the council, this has proven invaluable most recently with the latest 2020 handbook review. NNDCs latest review of the handbook saw new statutory guidance being introduced along with many new rules. Chairperson Ashley Colman said the association had worked tirelessly over the last few months with licensing chairperson Pierre Butikofer, Licensing portfolio holder Nigel Lloyd & thanked Councillors Georgie Perry-Warnes, Peter Fisher & Emma Spagnola for their time on this matter along with Licensing officers Lara Clare & Tracy Howard. Ashley said that after many hours of meetings addressing the issues that the secretary Steve Heels had raised on behalf of the trade the culmination of these meetings had resulted in the most comprehensive joint review of the Taxi rule handbook ever known. The taxi association are about 150 members short of representing nearly every licensed Taxi/PH driver & Operator in North Norfolk. Steve Heels asks anyone who is a licensed North Norfolk taxi or private hire driver who has not yet joined to visit the website, www.nntpha.weebly.com There is a simple to complete application form that you can submit online. This can also be done on any smart phone too. You can also email the secretary at nntpha@aol.com. It is currently free to join as the association recognises that everyone’s finances are suffering at the moment. The association has saved every driver and operator money over the last 8

Apologies for the misprint in No. 286; wBh1/bBh2 should have been on h2/h3 resp. as diagrammed above. Solution: 1. Nf5. 1… Bc5 2. Nxc7; 1. Rc5 2.
