A Note from the Editor

Another year, another lockdown. Covid is certainly making its presence felt. Even here where we have had relatively low numbers of cases, incidence is rising rapidly. There is, however, hope of a corner being turned with the roll out of the new vaccines. Now is the time to dig in and keep our resolve. Never has ‘Hands – Face – Space’ been more important, until we get the pandemic under control. How are your New Year resolutions going? A Bristol University study showed that 88% of us fail to keep our resolutions, no surprise there, especially if we are staying home with the fridge calling your name constantly. But now is perhaps the time to take up that hobby you always wanted to try or study those seed catalogues to have that garden display even better than last year. Whatever floats your boat, why not try something different this year, maybe join an online group, make new friends in the process. If the last year has taught us anything, it is the importance of making and keeping up connections and finding different ways to use our time and interact with others. Whatever you are doing in this New Year may it be better than the last. Enjoy your January magazine. Keep well and safe. Jo – Editor.

News from The Venue

It feels so strange to write 2021 for the first time, but we are all relieved to be in a New Year, with all the hope that a fresh start can bring. Although we find ourselves once again in lockdown, this is starting to feel like familiar territory, and doesn’t bring quite as much anxiety as the first did. We are, thankfully, in a fairly secure position financially, and are being as frugal and careful as we can be. I’m pleased to say that the Meals on Wheels that we started late last year is still in full swing, and despite losing a number of volunteers, has some new recruits that are turning up to help deliver over 50 meals to vulnerable or isolated people in our community. On Christmas Eve we had a generous delivery of fabulous artisan bakery from the wonderful Owl Tearooms, who sadly have had to close doors for the lockdown and were keen to make sure none of their amazing bakery went to waste. We were able to distribute these goodies to all our Meals recipients, which was a lovely extra surprise. The Christmas Meal, distributed on Christmas Eve, went down a storm, when 50 full Christmas Dinners with all the trimmings were delivered by our wonderful team, all decked in Christmas finery and full of Christmas Cheer. Many thanks to Duncan Baker and his lovely family who joined the team to serve our community their Christmas meal, and to all the rest of the team who worked so hard that day to take hot meals and a bag full of extra goodies. It was very strange not being able to do our usual Christmas Day event this year but being able to serve the community in this way made up for it. Thanks also to those of you who donated either money or food to the cause; we rely on such donations to continue to do the Café and Meals on Wheels, and it is heartily appreciated. The Meals on Wheels will continue this year, every Thursday lunchtime, so if you know of anyone in Holt who is vulnerable, isolated or struggling through these strange times, please do give them the number below and ask them to get in touch. The Venue will continue to support any support groups who are able to meet during the lockdown, though they are few, and we very much look forward to opening the doors up for the larger community and continuing our program of community work, arts and events once we are allowed to once again. Until then, keep safe and well, contact us if you need Meals on Wheels, and see you soon! Call us on 01263 713427 or 07754 149108 or email holtcommunitycentre@gmail.com. Ron Wright

Ron Wright of Blyth and Wright, Sheringham, has died at the age of 89. Ron was a familiar ďŹ gure to all who live in Sheringham and the surrounding area standing behind the counter in his trademark brown coat, where he had worked for over 75 years, man and boy. He began, aged 13, chopping kindling for the shop, later taking over the business with his brother in the 1950s and expanding into the emporium it is today. Whatever you wanted Ron could lay his hands on it, as the shop’s motto says, ‘I bet we got it.’ In 1999 he bought his brother out of the business and decided to take things a little easier by handing the running of the business to his 3 sons, Chris, Andy and Jamie, whilst continuing as director. Tragically he lost both Andy and Jamie in their 30s but continued to work in

the shop with Chris. He prided himself in providing old fashioned customer service and always had time to give advice and pass the time of day with all who came into the shop. His son, Chris said “The shop was his life, he spent most of his life there. He was a great father, hardworking, fair and was always known as a gentleman by everyone.â€? Chris added, “Dad would have Ron with one of his horses been very proud of what we have achieved during the Covid crisis and how the sta have worked to support the community.â€? He came to his love of horses and riding in his 50s and enjoyed travelling to Ireland to go hunting, he also kept horses at Beeston. He was a keen cabinet maker and restored grandfather clocks, giving one to each of his sons. He was passionate about Sheringham, and through the business contributed to local charities and causes, donating thousands of pounds over the years and supporting Sheringham Carnival, Sheringham Christmas Lights and local schools, to name but a few. After losing wife Bridget in 2015 Ron was still to be found at the counter chatting with customers until he ďŹ nally retired aged 85. An astute businessman, charming, kind and principled, with a wry sense of humour. He is survived by his son Chris and his 3 granddaughters. He will be remembered fondly across North Norfolk and beyond by locals and visitors alike for many years to come.

The Last Lost World

LESLIE GEORGE KINSLEY On the 4th of December 2020, my friend and neighbour Leslie KINSLEY died at the N&N hospital. His heart had finally given up. He was 95 years old and the rest of his body had been quietly giving up the ghost for some time. Not that he took this quietly! Despite many attempts at explanations from medics and friends, he continued his search for a cure for old age. “I can’t walk anymore,” he would say, as he pushed a wheeled frame across the surgery. “What can you do about it?” The puzzled doctor would not realise that to Les a frame stopped him from working effectively in his garden. He could do a bit of watering, but digging, weeding, mowing his lawn etc. had become awkward tasks which Les Kinsley had to be delegated to his family; much to his annoyance. Furthermore, he could not pop round to my house to look after the chickens while I was away. I was sorry about this, but he was sorrier. What he could still do, was chat about the past times. I wrote down his recollections and typed them up. He loved to read them, and when the Holt Chronicle kindly started to print them, he was absolutely delighted. His memories of ‘A Lost World’ for everyone to read and enjoy. Les always lived in the Briston and Melton Constable area and had been a farm-worker all his life from 13 years old to his 70’s. He had seen the move from horsepower to machine power. He has a real skill with machinery and ought to have been an agricultural engineer if he had had the education. He would work all day on the farm, then drive a lorry load of vegetables to the London markets. In his “spare” time, he went poaching and rabbiting until he was near retirement. Then he put his countryman skills to being a Game Keeper. Les also had an allotment and kept pigs and chickens! I am not sure how much his wife Elsie saw of him except at mealtimes. She worked hard too, helping with the animals and allotment, along with her own work cleaning and babysitting. Occasionally, they went off to the coast with a picnic, and in earlier times the cinema in Holt. During WWII, Les, 14 in 1939, lied about his age and joined the Home Guard. He vividly remembered the bombing raid by the Germans, aimed at the railway at Melton Constable, and also the waves of British and Allied bombers which used Melton as a mustering point before raids. He told me at length about the prisoners of war, Italian & German, and the sexual exploits of the Canadian troops on his farm’s hay stacks. This last because he and his work mates found items lost from pockets during those encounters. It was profitable- apparently! One of his latest recollections was about his Home Guard group hiding lots of hand grenades and Molotov cocktails at strategic points, ready for the invasion of German tanks. This arsenal is still there, and he went to some length to inform the landowner of their existence. I loved listening to him. The stories were always fascinating, and he rarely repeated any of them. After all, he had over 90 years’ worth! I think his creative mind was kept going by his love of reading. The Eastern Daily Press was his great resource. He went to great lengths to bully poor Paul Graves into delivering this early. He hated “old news”. 8 am was much too late for someone who rose at 5 am most days.

Of late his favourite page was the Births, Marriage & Deaths column. Who he had outlived was always of interest? The downside of this was that ageing friends were either too old or too dead to call for a mardle. Visitors were welcomed with pleasure, even the tactless ones who turned up of an evening when the Norwich City commentary was on Radio Norfolk. I took care to avoid this time! Les had some strong opinions. He was an ardent Republican. On one trip to hospital, a doctor decided to check his mental faculties by asking about the royal family. His reply was a blistering diatribe which must have scorched the poor doctors’ ears. He liked to debate issued of the day with me, usually beginning with some outrageous comment to annoy me, and then giving me a “sideways” look to show he was winding me up to provoke discussion. It seems strange when you think about it, but Les was really caring about nature and wildlife, even though he spent much of his life killing or arranging the killing, of so much. On his retirement from game keeping, the magpie from his Larsen trap was released in his garden. The only creatures he really disliked were rats and starlings. I asked why starlings and he said they were “dirty creatures”. Rabbits were dispatched humanely, and were always destined for the pot, as were the pheasants he poached. He got very upset about the effect of pesticides on wildlife. He had used them on the farm and was horrified at the effect they had on the songbirds and young pheasants. He reserved his strongest disapproval for anyone who was deliberately cruel to an animal. No food was ever wasted in his house. When he had to have a lady called Donna to help she very quickly learnt that ‘clearing out the fridge ‘was a way to really “tune him up”. When he went to look for a little dish of 3-day old fish and found it had been consigned to the bin his comments on wastefulness were quite forceful. Les was the same about clothing. He had a favourite coat for gardening in wet weather. Both side streams were split, meaning it was held on by bailer twine. It was badly discoloured with age and combined with old cord trousers and ‘water boots’ made him look very disreputable. I did enjoy teasing him about the ‘tramp’ I had seen lurking in his front garden. A lot of local people got to know him because of his last money earning gambit, which was selling produce and plants from his front garden. He was really green fingered, even though he rarely knew the names of anything. He created wonderful pots of Petunias, Begonias and Geraniums. Some he would use to decorate his house and garden and others would be put out for sale. He would go off to the recycling centres with his sister Betty, in search of cheap containers and baskets for this hobby. Les also sold surplus produce and flowers, including mine. He took commission of 10p per item. Les will be greatly missed by a lot of people and it is an end to a unique window into the past. At his funeral as his coffin, which also contained his beloved Elsie’s ashes, was lowered into the ground, a local shoot happened to let off a volley of shots. We all smiled. Les would have been delighted. Heather Bowes

Avian Influenza: Measures regarding Avian Influenza were enhanced at least twice over the past weeks so however few birds you have please check the latest update: www.gov.uk/guidance/avian-influenza-birdflu#latest-situation

from County Councillor Dr Marie Strong Wells Division Dear Readers

marie.strong@norfolk.gov.uk; 07920 286 597

Were we surprised being moved into Tier 4? I leave that question for you ponder – the answer may help us get out of Tier 4. For now I have copied below Norfolk’s Director of Public Health rationale for the move and the usual websites which I am assured are updated regularly – this means that whatever changes come into play you can check out the latest and what is happening where your family and friends live.

As to why tier 4: Louise Smith, Director of Public Health in Norfolk said ‘What is really clear, over the last six or seven days the numbers have really taken off and are now rising very quickly. "It may be the new variant and we think now just after half of the cases are the new variant but it's also worth remembering that all our predictions and scenarios did predict we were in for a tough winter and unfortunately this does look the direction in which we are heading. When we look at the data by district area we are seeing the numbers rise in every district.’

Below I have also copied information as to what is available for people struggling to cope with lock down and other Covid related problems. The good news is that there is a range of assistance available and if appropriate please share the information but first:

Holt Hall: A full council meeting of Norfolk county councillors has been called for Monday ll January to request that Cabinet urgently revisit and reverse its decision to dispose of Holt Hall and instead develop a plan to secure the future of outdoor learning at Holt Hall together with the investment required to ensure its long term sustainability.

COVID-19 Information: Information on the national tiers is available at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/local-restriction-tiers-what-you-needto-know www.norfolk.gov.uk/coronavirus: this site includes local services as well as the latest regulations for Norfolk and reference to many if not all of the government schemes www.gov.uk/coronavirus: all the government schemes are to be found on this site www.nhs.uk/coronavirus; separate site if required but linked with the government site.

Support for Families: A reminder that Norfolk County Council has developed a package of support to help families over the winter months. For information and advice go to www.norfolk.gov.uk/coronavirus or call 0344 800 8020. Please share this information and the following: Free school meals: check if your children are eligible: https://www.norfolk.gov.uk/educationand-learning/schools/school-mealsand-milk. Extension of Norfolk Assistance Scheme: provides support for food, fuel, clothes and other essential household items. Christmas Lights: For the first time ever I persuaded Michael (spouse) to retrieve our Christmas lights from the loft in time to switch on for 1 December. I know several villages planned to get their lights up early and we hope those passing our home were cheered by our lights, as we were by others on dull and wet nights. I now working on retaining our lights as long as possible - watch this space.

Warm wishes to you all.

New Year Lasting Power of Attorney Discount

Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney:

Make it your New Year’s Resolution to get your legal affairs in order and plan for the future. Throughout January and February 2021, Clapham & Collinge LLP is offering a 25% discount on Lasting Powers of Attorney.

We’ve seen a significant increase in the number of clients instructing us to grant power of attorney as the coronavirus outbreak prompts many of us to urgently review our legal affairs. Although it is often difficult to think about, it is crucial that we Lin Whitehead plan for the future and ensure we can manage our financial affairs in the event of an incapacitating illness, accident or injury. Everyone understands the importance of a Will, but Lasting Powers of Attorney are a bit more obscure in the public sphere and often people are not aware why they need them.

If you lose the ability to manage your own affairs, a partner or family member cannot automatically deal with things on your behalf. A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that enables people you choose to have legal authority to make certain decisions for you, if you become unable to make them yourself. The person who is given this authority is known as an ‘attorney’. They can manage your finances, or make decisions relating to your health and welfare. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney:

Property and Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney:

This gives your attorney the power to make decisions about your money and property, including managing bank or building society accounts, paying bills, collecting a pension and if necessary, selling your home. Once registered with the Office of the Public Guardian, it can be used immediately, or held in readiness until required.

This gives your attorney the power to make decisions about your daily routine, medical care, moving into a care home and life-sustaining medical treatment. It can only be used if you are unable to make your own decisions.

In relation to the cost of preparing and registering a Lasting Power of Attorney, this will depend on whether you wish to have both a Lasting Power of Attorney (Property and Financial Affairs) and/or a Lasting Power of Attorney (Health and Welfare) prepared and registered.

What happens if you don't make a Lasting Power of Attorney?

• No one has legal authority to act on your behalf – your spouse and children have no automatic rights to make decisions on your behalf; • Someone will need to make an application to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order; • This can be costly, time consuming and you may not end up being assisted by the person you would have chosen yourself.

The cost of preparing and registering a Lasting Power of Attorney will depend on whether you wish to have a Property & Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney and/or a Health & Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney prepared and registered.

To claim your discount and book your New Year appointment, please contact us on 01263 823398 or email enquiries@claphamcollinge.co.uk. We can carry out telephone or video appointments, reducing the need for face-to-face meetings in accordance with social distancing guidelines. To be eligible for the discount, all Lasting Power of Attorney appointments must take place by Friday 26th February.

A Big Thanks to Our Generous Donors

Thanks to all our wonderful donors, Cromer And District Foodbank have received an unprecedented amount of food donations for people in need during the last few months and we now have very high stock levels. We have also seen a big increase in people accessing our Foodbank for the first time and have been able to help many with emergency supplies and further help with issues affecting them. We need to stocktake during January and reassess our supplies so this month we have taken the unusual step of asking all our donors to have a donation holiday whilst we also continue to distribute our supplies. Many many thanks to all our donors during 2020 and we look forward to receiving your generous donations from February. We operate in 6 areas in North Norfolk. Cromer, Sheringham, North Walsham, Aylsham, Holt and Stalham We do continue to need your help to pass on the message that we have supplies and to tell anyone who is in need, to contact us. Contact us on 07826376343 Monday to Friday 9.30-3.30pm. Email: info@cromerdistrict.foodbank.org.uk

MINUTE TAKER NEEDED

Have you been wondering about volunteering for a good cause, but want to use your particular skills? Still working or newly retired with some energy and enthusiasm, but wanting to “give something back” to your community?

Age Concern North Norfolk, based in Sheringham, is a small charity that supports the elderly in the wider area (some with early dementia) with a Day Centre Hub, Intergenerational activities and a Drop in Service.

Do you have past experience as an Administrator and are you able to take notes to produce concise and accurate minutes from Trustees meetings? Age Concern North Norfolk is looking for someone like you who has 3-4 hours to spare each month. This voluntary role would involve 2 hours a month at our Trustees meeting (currently the third Thursday in the month, 1-3 pm) and then time afterwards to type up your notes and submit them electronically. During Tier 4 regulations meetings may be held on Zoom rather than in person.

SAINT ANDREW’S & ALL SAINTS NEWS The Parish of Holt with High Kelling

FROM THE RECTOR

Rector: Fr. Howard Stoker SSC, The Rectory, Church Street, Holt NR25 6BB Tel: 01263 712048 email:holtrectory@tiscali.co.uk Assistant Curate: Fr Gary Gould. Tel: 01328 830715, Email: garygould57@gmail.com Parish Office Tel: 01263 713479 E: standrewsholt@btinternet.com website at www.holtchurch.org

Dear Friends, 2021 begins with the same uncertainty and anxiety with which 2020 ended. In fact for a while it seems things will get worse before they get better. Therefore, I hesitate to wish you a Happy New Year. But we cannot, nor should we give up hope that the new year ahead of us will be happier than the past one. There is always tomorrow, and tomorrow will be a better day. We have to be optimistic otherwise we are in danger of falling into that pit of despair. That optimism is grounded on the fact that not only is the human race resilient but that we also have a huge capacity to care and show compassion. In many Christmas messages or sermons from our secular and religious leaders, tributes were made to the selfless acts of many people dealing with this ongoing pandemic. From those who work in our NHS, care homes and schools to community groups, and countless individuals have put themselves at risk for the good of others. For that I would like to add my gratitude and appreciation. My optimism for the year ahead is also grounded in the hope contained in the message of Christmas which is hopefully still ringing in our ears. On the 6th January we kept the Feast of the Epiphany which recalls the visit of the magi to Bethlehem. The Feast of the Epiphany is significant for many reasons, not least because the wise men who had travelled far from the East were Gentile foreigners, those who at the time were considered outside of God’s covenant with the people of Israel. They laid before the Christ-child gifts of gold, fit for a King, incense, offered before the divine, and myrrh to define his humanity. These unexpected visitors were a clear sign, not only to who the child Jesus was and is, but also a clear signal that God’s love in and through Christ Jesus, extends to all, regardless of who we are. As we begin a new Year we can face the months ahead with a renewed hope in the love that God has for us and which he calls us to share with others. Therefore, putting the past year behind us let us commitment ourselves afresh to continue building up our community in mutual love and respect and work together to regain something of that which we have lost. Every blessing,

FROM THE REGISTERS

Fr. Howard

Cromer Minor Injuries update

Dear Jo, I knew that a new convenience store had recently opened in Chapel Yard, Holt near the entrance to the Albert Street car park but have only just used it and I must say it is very well stocked given how small it is. I popped in for mustard, bread and milk it’s just the sort of shop you need if you have run out of the basics or forgotten something. It is a good replacement for the convenience store we used to have on the Market Place before it closed and was replaced by Joules. I do hope it thrives.

Cromer Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) will temporarily close from Monday 4 January as part of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital’s NHS Foundation Trust’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic. From Monday, staff based at the MIU in Mill Road, Cromer, will be redeployed to support the minor injuries and Emergency Department at NNUH where our teams are seeing Covid-19 infections and admissions continue to rise. We know this will be disappointing to North Norfolk patients who value the MIU service at Cromer. However, the Cromer MIU space will be used to maintain a low Covid-19 risk treatment area for surgical appointments and procedures. The service will be reopened as soon as the Covid-19 situation improves. If you require urgent care, please contact NHS 111 by phone or online who will triage you and direct you to the most appropriate place for your healthcare needs. The Norwich Walk-In centre, run by Norwich Practices Ltd, in Rouen Road, Norwich, is open from 7am to 9pm daily.

Hello, I am Katie, a Foot Health Practioner. I take appointments for home visits in Wells, Fakenham, Holt, Sheringham and their surrounding villages. This is a valuable service to patients who are primarily housebound or in rural villages with little means of transport.

Don’t let foot pain mess up your life. If you love to run, take walks and exercise, or are just happy to be pottering in the garden, your feet need a little TLC. Here are some easy ways to help avoid problems. If the Shoe Fits: 1. Wear appropriate shoes for the activity you are performing: well cushioned shoes for long periods of standing, and activity-specific ones for exercise. 2. Don’t wear the same pair every day. (This goes for work shoes too.) 3. Stick with heels no higher than ¾ inch. Heels contribute to knee and back problems, falls and an awkward, unnatural gait. 4. If possible, measure your feet every time you buy shoes. Try on both shoes and walk in them. Make sure there are no uncomfortable pressure points, that your toes are squeezed, and that your heel doesn’t slip. The Joy of Socks 5. Choose materials that wick sweat away from your feet. Avoid nylon socks and pantyhose for long periods of time. 6. Avoid tight socks or nylons that squeeze your toes or bunch under your feet. 7. Change socks at least one a day; never wear the same pair two days on a row. Move it the Right Way 8. Don’t do long or strenuous weight bearing, aerobic workouts on back-toback days 9. Regular stretching and strengthening exercises for your feet, ankles and calves will keep them healthier. Clean Feet are Happy Feet 10. Keep your feet dry. 11. Shower shoes give some protection in public facilities. 12. Cut toenails straight across. 13. Check that your pedicure therapist uses sterilised equipment. 14. Wash and carefully dry your feet daily, especially between the toes. 15. Clean and disinfect your shower regularly. Aren’t you worth it! An Unusual Visitor Jumping Into the New Year!

likely to have been traumatic as Wallabies, like many species, will often have tussles for dominance when they reach sexual maturity. Our specialised anaesthetic protocols meant Benjy recovered really quickly and our team were able to start him on medication to keep him comfortable and help him eat better whilst his fracture heals and Benjy is now on track to make a full recovery and will be reintegrated with his troupe. Benjy is quite unusual amongst Wallabies as he is a hand reared and imprinted Wallaby and it was a pleasure to have him at the surgery as, like all of us when we feel poorly, all he wanted was to hold someone’s hand and have a hug! A lovely way to start the new year! We hope all our clients and patients have a safe and healthy 2021 and look forward to seeing you all during the year. ’

As we moved to 2021 we were privileged to be able to see one of Toll Barn Vets more unusual patients. Our expertise and skills with exotic pets mean we often see more unusual patients, however, Benjy was certainly one of the more exotic! Benjy is a Wallaby owned by a local zoo collection who came to see us when his keeper noticed he wasn’t eating and had stopped interacting with his troupe. Having previously been the alpha male this raised a particular concern. Our veterinary surgeons examined Benjy and found he had a nasal discharge which would be painful when eating. Dental abscesses are common in Wallabies but Benjy’s teeth appeared in good condition so our team performed blood tests in our in-house Laboratory and a CT Scan in our Diagnostic Imaging Suite to help diagnose Benjy’s problem. We were very pleased that his blood tests were normal so his organs were functioning well despite him being a slightly older patient. The CT scan however, showed that poor Benjy had a fracture of his orbit (the part of the skull under the eye) and damage to his nose. This damage is

A circle of life and the rhythm of Nature

Nature has always been compensation for my work inside hospitals, caring for others. Today I care for nature. For me, there’s no better place to be than on Blakeney Point where I volunteer as a National Trust Seal Warden and property photographer. A combination of both allows me to capture unique wildlife scenes from a safe distance, like the birth of a pup. (images) The pupping season started in October but by the end of November, Blakeney Point looked like a seal maternity ward with pups scattered everywhere. It’s difficult not to anthropomorphise nature and

to attach humanness to everything we see. Nature takes and nature gives. Though, nature is neither cute nor cruel. As a Seal Warden, I have to ensure the seals are not disturbed by informing and guiding the visitors, sharing my knowledge and passion for this place. The Grey Seal is the largest seal living in the UK. Blakeney Point is the biggest colony in England with 3,399 pups born in 2019/20. This year we expect the number to exceed 4000 pups. The rangers had to change their way of counting the pups for safety reasons and you can find out more about this on their website. The colony is expanding due to Blakeney Point being a perfect breeding site with vast land and no natural predators. Should you encounter a

seal on your way from Cley beach towards The Point, please keep your distance, do not approach or disturb them in any way as this will cause unnecessary stress. 2020 was a difficult year but nature thrived. Hanne Siebers.

Ring in the New!

I can’t quite believe that it is January already, but like many people, I’m slightly amending my diet to atone for the overindulgence that we all know and love as Christmas. It’s good to start the New Year with a determination to make some changes, and rather than ‘put myself on a diet’ (surely a sentence to strike trepidation into anyone!) I have determined to increase the number and variety of vegetables and fruit that I eat, which I’m hoping will naturally make me healthier. One veg that I love is the humble sweet potato; who can resist that vibrant colour and creamy texture that screams comfort food when the temperature is so low? It’s packed full of nutritional superpower, and so easy to source and cook, as well as being fairly easy on the purse. This is my favourite way to cook them; fast, easy and delicious. Swap the herbs if you’re not keen on rosemary, and try thyme, oregano or curry powder for a bit of heat. I have them like this with a huge salad and maybe a little protein on the side, or just tuck into a pile of them with some garlic mayo to dip them in…..healthy heaven! Carolyn Burn

Method

Preheat your oven to 200°. Toss the chunks in a good slug of olive oil, and scatter on about 2 tsp rosemary, season with garlic granules, add a heaped tsp smoked paprika and a little salt and pepper. Toss to coat evenly and place on a large baking tray in the top of the oven for around 30 mins, or until cooked through and just starting to char a little on the edges. Serve immediately.

National offensive weapons surrender scheme begins following introduction of new laws.

People in Norfolk are being given three months to surrender certain items that will soon be classed as offensive weapons under new legislation coming into force. The Offensive Weapons Act 2019 introduces the new legislation as part of the Government’s response to serious violence, that gives the police the powers to tackle the issue. The act includes new measures to control the sale of knives and corrosive substances, it also introduces new offences relating to their possession and use and will bring in new knife crime prevention. Under the new laws, the possession of specified rapid firing rifles, bump stocks, knives, and offensive weapons for public safety, will be prohibited. To ensure the public can dispose of these items safely, a three-month surrender period started on Thursday 10 December and will run until Tuesday 9 March 2021. During this time, the lawful owners of these weapons can begin to surrender them to the police and submit a claim form for compensation from the Home Office.

Temporary Chief Inspector Jon Chapman head of the Joint Roads and Armed Policing Team said: "It is extremely important that anyone who is currently in possession of one of the above items, is aware of the change in legislation. "Although there is a three-month surrender period, we urge lawful owners of these items to either return them to a designated police station or contact their local licencing department as soon as possible.

"Please ensure that when you are transporting items to one of the designated police stations, you do so in a safe manner. This includes wrapping items or placing them in a bag or a box, if possible. Please also make sure that you do not take the items out until you are requested to do so by a police officer or member of staff. "Members of the public should also continue to adhere to the Covid regulations when attending stations by making sure they are wearing a mask and socially distancing from those around them. "If possible, please call 101 beforehand to ensure officers or staff are aware of your visit.” Those in possession of knives or other offensive weapons must fill in an Offensive Weapons Act Surrender and Compensation Scheme Form, before bringing this and the item(s) to a police station designated for the purpose. This form must be completed regardless of whether the owner is seeking compensation or not. Owners should also bring valid identification and proof of ownership - this could be a receipt of purchase or something similar. In Norfolk, the designated police stations are either Bethel Street Police Station, Norwich, King’s Lynn Police Station or Great Yarmouth Police Station.

To surrender firearms, relevant certificate holders are likely to be contacted by force licencing departments, with arrangements to be made to collect these items from their homes, rather than requiring them to attend a police station. Please take all reasonable steps to make the firearm safe to handle. If you have not been contacted by the Firearms Licencing Unit, then please call Chris Wright on 07770831503 or email: christopher.wright3@norfolk.police.uk.

For more information about the scheme, including a full list of the above items, claim form and whether you are eligible for compensation, please visit: GOV.uk

"The reason for this being that anyone found in possession of these items after the surrender period will effectively be in possession of an illegal weapon or firearm and could face up to ten years in prison.

30,000 Mission Milestone for Air Ambulance

East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) has revealed that its helicopter emergency medical service has been tasked 30,000 times since the charity was established 20 years ago. Although not something to celebrate, as each tasking represents someone who’s life was in danger, this is a significant milestone for the charity, which covers the region by helicopter and rapid response vehicle (RRV). EAAA operates 365 days year, 24/7 by RRV, and is almost completely funded by the generosity of people across East Anglia. Its critical care teams, stationed at Norwich and Cambridge, provide emergency cover across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Norfolk, taking the A&E department to the roadside or bedside of those in a time-critical, life-changing situation, where every second counts. On average, EAAA is tasked more than 2,500 times a year and has flown 5,000 missions since January 2019, when the 25,000th mission was flown. The majority of its call outs are to cardiac arrest patients and road traffic collisions. The charity has continued to operate throughout the pandemic, only missing two clinical shifts to-date due to Covid-19 related reasons and has also been able to support local hospitals in managing intensive care capacity. The EAAA teams are highly skilled at transferring critically ill patients, by air or road ambulance, and are currently on call to transfer patients between intensive care units, to help hospitals in the fight against Covid-19. In 2020 so far, EAAA has been tasked 1,328 times by helicopter, 1,061 times by rapid response vehicle, helped 1,603 patients, flown 88,800 miles and supported 284 patients through its dedicated Aftercare Service, which helps patients and relatives understand what happened and why the air ambulance was called. The average cost of a helicopter mission is £3,500 and EAAA needs to raise in the region of 13 million each year to deliver and develop its vital service. In 2021, EAAA is aiming to start flying 24/7, becoming the first air ambulance in the East of England to do so, and estimates this will enable the charity to help hundreds more patients a year. The on-going effects of Covid-19 on the charity’s fundraising income are as yet unknown, however EAAA are expecting a shortfall in fundraising income next year and urge you to support them in any way that you can, in order to keep its life-saving crews operational and yellow helicopters flying. Patrick Peal, CEO of the East Anglian Air Ambulance, said: “We’re incredibly proud of the way our supporters have continued to support us throughout the challenges of 2020, the way everyone in the charity has focused their efforts this year to make sure we’re still able to operate safely and be there to support the other emergency services on the frontline. There are a lot of things we will

Organic Gardening January 2021

Well, what a year! however as you can see from the photograph, having just come from the allotment with a barrow full of fresh vegetables for the Christmas period, this has still meant exercise on the allotment and a wonderful array of crops. These are so fresh, tasteful and organic. What does organic mean? Just free from any chemicals or much more. I have been growing organically for many years now and as you already know producing my own compost. However, what is growing organically, organic growing doesn’t just mean not using chemicals, weed killers and pesticide sprays. It is using natural ways to promote a healthy, productive and sustainable growing area. The real principles of organics are that we work with natural systems and cycles. The soil is as important as the plants it supports. The main principles are: Building and maintaining soil health. The soil is full of life, insects, worms, microscopic organisms to name but a few. These support healthy plant growth. To help with this, we employ crop rotation which involves moving crops around the plot each year, dig or no dig processes and we treasure our soil. I love my worms; they are a real sign of soil fertility. Being aware of what you bring on to your growing area, manure, what is its provenance, does it contain any antibiotics that have been administered through the food of the animals. Encourage diversity. All forms of life have a part to play, such as different forms of plants. Henry Doubleday founder of what is now Garden Organic created a plant type called Bocking 14, which is a clump forming comfrey, it doesn’t spread. This plant provides valuable nutrients or food for my compost and liquid feed for my plants. Plants, insects, birds and www.holtchronicle.co.uk

take away with us when we reflect on 2020, and reaching this milestone is definitely one of them. We urge everyone to stay safe over the festive period and to keep on supporting EAAA in any way that you can, so that we can continue to be there for the local people who need our help in their darkest hour.” To make a donation to EAAA, go to: www.eaaa.org.uk/donate

Inside Holt Country Park’s New Forest School

Wild By Nature, a new forest school set up by Davina Landers, Diana Leo and Gemma Thody has proven to be a big success. The forest school, set up in the Green Flag Award winning Holt Country Park, is already fully subscribed with a view to expand. Forest schools are child-centred outdoor learning programmes set in a natural environment, exploring early years learning through play, social interaction and exploration. The ethos of forest schooling seeks to explore the young child’s learning and development holistically, rather than academically. The nature of forests and woodlands such as Holt Country Park, means that the children can explore the natural surroundings, taking in all the wildlife and learning about the environments they live in, whilst learning vital social skills outside the conventional classroom setting. Davina and Diana, two of the founders of Wild By Nature, grew up in Holt and spent their childhood years exploring the woodlands they now teach children in. Colin Brown, Sports, Recreation and Countryside Manager, said: “We have been planning this for the last 12 months and we’re delighted that we’ve got to where we are today and I’m really looking forward to working with them to grow this project into the future.” Cllr. Virginia Gay, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Wellbeing and Culture said: “We're so pleased that Holt Country Park is the setting for such a wonderful outdoor learning project. It’s so important that children get to experience the beautiful environment we have around us and learn how to look after nature” View Wild by Nature’s website for more information about their forest school. mammals all have a role to play for instance, I put boards down on the edge of the garden, this creates a home for toads to live and at night them come out and eat the slugs. No need for slug pellets! Use resources responsibly The organic grower uses resources sustainably with minimum damage to the planet, pots made out of paper, toilet roll inners, no peat products, keeping the use of plastics to a minimum and using watering wisely. Avoid harmful chemicals Toxic chemicals used to kill weeds, diseases and pests can damage your health and the health of your growing area. Think about Bees and the build up of these chemicals in our water! Using wood that has not been treated, as railway sleepers may contain formaldehyde. All of these principles are creating a journey - it might not happen overnight; however it will keep you growing in a much healthier way, respecting the planet and all the resources we have. Quick tip for January sow Broad beans in a greenhouse or cold frame, protect from mice! These will produce an early crop which can be planted out in February/March. Sow onion seed and then when big enough, prick out ready for the new season. Keep an eye on your bulbs as they are poking through now. A top dressing of blood, fish and bone meal will help their flowers. The Holt Chronicle January 2021

The steps to take if you or any member of your household display Covid 19 symptoms are simple and can be key in preventing infections being spread.

If you are symptomatic you must isolate as soon as you notice symptoms and to have no face to face contact with anyone outside of your household.

It is important to do this straight away, and for everyone in the household to isolate as they could also be infectious even without symptoms.

As soon as you isolate, visit www.nhs.uk/ coronavirus or call 119 to book a test. Stay in isolation until you receive your results, which will include instructions on what to do next.

family that we want to keep safe – whether that’s parents, elderly grandparents, and even our children. And we need everyone to play their part to help us do that. We all have to work together to keep each other safe.”

Cath Byford, Chief Nurse with NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Our call to everyone is, if you have coronavirus symptoms then self-isolate, get a test and help us track down people you have been in contact with. It’s one way that together we can beat this virus.”

But Test and Trace isn’t only about symptomatic individuals: when a positive test result arrives, teams of contact tracers will search for everyone the Covid positive individual has been in recent contact with and will alert them.

Cllr Bill Borrett, Norfolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, said: “This isn’t just about protecting ourselves, but making sure we all play our part to protect everyone around us. We all have friends and

many challenges over a prolonged period of time. Let’s not waste what we have done together.

We can all do our bit this New Year to curb Covid and ease pressures on the NHS, Norfolk’s leaders said, in the face of rising case numbers.

WE CAN DO THIS! is the message being sent to communities across Norfolk on the last day of 2020 as residents are reminded that staying at home is now more important than ever to support local NHS services facing significant challenges.

With Covid-19 spreading fast and cases at record levels both in Norfolk and across the country, the Norfolk Resilience Forum (NRF) is urging residents to continue playing their part in following the Lockdown rules in order to ease the pressure on local health services. The NRF, which is the multi-agency group comprising Norfolk’s local authorities, police, health and supporting agencies, is urging everyone to stay safely at home with their own household or support bubble and wherever possible don’t travel outside your local area.

Cllr Andrew Proctor, Chair of the Norfolk Covid-19 Engagement Board and Leader of Norfolk County Council said: “I speak for myself and all the other Norfolk leaders on the Engagement Board in saying there is no doubt that 2020 has been a really difficult year but we can look to 2021 with hope. With the announcement of a second vaccine being approved and vaccination programmes already underway in Norfolk, there is much to be optimistic about. But we must not be complacent, we are not out of the woods yet. I hope the people of Norfolk will be able to look back over the last year with pride at how they have coped and come together to help others. So many individuals, organisations and businesses have made sacrifices and faced www.holtchronicle.co.uk

“I would urge everyone simply not to travel. It’s more important than ever to keep up the good work - 2021 is not a time we can afford to party or go to other gatherings.”

Norfolk Constabulary’s Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Julie Wvendth said: “Given the rise in infections and continued stress this puts on the NHS system, we would urge people to abide by the Lockdown restrictions. If we work together to protect ourselves and each other we can put ourselves in the best place to tackle it. This includes staying local and only going out for essential journeys.

“Where breaches are reported to the police, we will consider the information provided to us and attend where necessary. As we have said before, we will continue to follow the four Es approach and will engage, educate and explain the regulations to people, however, blatant disregard for the regulations will not be tolerated and when required we will enforce the legislation.

Norfolk’s Director of Public Health, Dr Louise Smith said: “With the new vaccines there is hope on the horizon. But infection rates are at unprecedented levels in Norfolk, as they are across the country. There is growing demand in our three acute hospitals and across the county’s social care settings. The increasing number of cases is across all ages and we know around one in three people who have Covid-19 don’t have any symptoms, but can still pass it on. So, the steps we take now are critical.

“We must continue to play our part and do everything we can to keep ourselves and our friends and family as safe and well as possible

positive for coronavirus ▪ Do not leave your home for any reason – if you need food or medicine, order it online or by phone, or ask friends and family to drop it off at your home ▪ Do not have visitors in your home, including friends and family – except for essential care ▪ Try to avoid contact with anyone you live with as much as possible ▪ Any people you live with and any people in your support bubble do not need to selfisolate if you do not have symptoms ▪ If you live with someone at higher risk from coronavirus, try to arrange for them to stay with friends or family while you're selfisolating. ▪ If you have to stay in the same home together, read about how to avoid spreading coronavirus to people you live with.

to reduce the spread of the virus and support our local NHS services.”

The key advice remains ‘hands, face, space’ – washing your hands regularly, covering your face in enclosed spaces and social distancing from anyone you do not live with or who isn’t in your support bubble is vital. If you have any of the coronavirus symptoms you must self-isolate straightway and get a test. You must continue to isolate if you test positive or are told to isolate by NHS Test and Trace.

Dr Anoop Dhesi, a practicing GP at Staithe Surgery in Stalham and Clinical Chair for NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said: “We have seen an amazing effort from all those involved in rolling out the vaccine - both our NHS staff and community volunteers. But please be patient and wait until you are contacted to come for your vaccination – do not phone or turn up at your GP practice or local hospital as they can only provide the vaccination by appointment.

“Coronavirus infection rates and hospital admissions are now higher than they were in the first wave. We are asking everyone to follow the Lockdown guidance and stay well by continuing to wash our hands, cover our face, and keep two metres apart. This is crucial to avoid more hospital admissions and losing more lives to this virus.

“If you have an urgent medical need but are unsure what to do, please call 111 first. They can signpost you to the most appropriate service, and can even make an appointment for you if you need to be seen urgently.”

General Practice in Holt – a family history

Stephen Gillam was 47 when he discovered that he was eighth in a line of generalist doctors dating back to 1770. The first William Skrimshire was a surgeon apothecary in Wisbech. His grandson George moved to Holt in 1841. He and his descendants practised from Hill House at the bottom of the High St for over a century. Many are buried in St Andrew’s churchyard. The second half of the nineteenth century saw the emergence of the ‘family doctor’. The challenges of the work were considerable relentless demand, grinding patient poverty, hopelessness in the face of incurable illness. Few effective therapies

were available till the second half of the twentieth century and the vocation was perilous. Stephen’s great grandfather, Joseph Gillam (1868-1911) died, aged only 42, to pneumonia contracted from one of his patients. (In those days, many doctors died ‘in harness’.) Working conditions were to improve greatly with the advent of state provision of health care and scientific progress in the twentieth century. Stephen is a senior visiting fellow at the Institute of Public Health, University of Cambridge. General practice has been his career anchor for nearly 40 years. He lives where his family started out. His book interweaves local and family biography with medical history. It describes the evolution of general practice from its apothecary roots, focusing on themes such as the burden of disease, developments in policy and practice. The conclusion reflects on the current and future state of general practice, including reference to the impact of Covid-19. Recent decades have seen the decline of traditional care with its emphasis on continuity of personal relationships. The computer template has replaced the body as the emblem of contemporary practice.

Tailormade toolkit launched to support businesses across Norfolk to stay open and stay safe A tailormade toolkit has been launched by Norfolk County Council to support businesses of all sizes and across all sectors to play their part in operating as safely as possible to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The kit, which has been developed by Norfolk’s Public Health team and representatives from local businesses, focuses on NHS Test and Trace and the implications for employers including: workplaces, restaurants, pubs and cafes, places of worship, leisure and entertainment facilities, hairdressers, salons, barbers and public venues.

NHS Test and Trace plays a crucial role in minimising the risk of further outbreaks of coronavirus. The kit, which is free and easy to use and download, contains: • An update on social distancing guidelines • Tips for employers • A guide to NHS Test and Trace • What to do in the event of an outbreak on your premises, including how to report it • Professionally designed printable posters for staff and customers for use in premises in a variety of languages • Resources for workers • Posters for restaurant and pubs • Grid and guidance for taking customer details for test and trace tracking • A sign-up facility for further updates

as additional guidance, posters and leaflets become available or are required

It follows an earlier business toolkit issued in May which gives general advice about how employers can play their part by adopting measures appropriate to their premises and staffing to reduce the risk of transmitting the virus.

Also published earlier this month was a kit aimed specifically for tourism businesses and accommodation providers. This contains: • A tourism information leaflet • Information posters for guests and tourists • A process for handling guests with suspected coronavirus

With individual documents and posters already downloaded a total of 26,677 times at the time of writing, the kits are available for individuals, partners, organisations and businesses to help remind the public of how to stay safe. Chris Starkie, chief executive of New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “Businesses have a key role to play in the NHS Test and Trace programme. It’s vital that workplaces are safe for staff and customers, so understanding this system will give employers the reassurance that they need.”

Graham Plant, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Growing the Economy at Norfolk County Council, said: “It’s great to see businesses across Norfolk have now been able to begin reopening after the lockdown period, and we’re grateful to them for the great lengths they’ve gone to become Covid secure. Whale Washes up on Sheringham Beach

On Tuesday 5th January, what is thought to be the body of a juvenile sperm whale washed up on the rocks at the end of the East Promenade in Sheringham. The relevant authorities were informed, and the scene was visited by members of the coastguard, who taped off the approach to the beach. It is yet to be decided how best to remove the whale and dispose of the remains. The East Ptromenade is closed at present from the bottom of the steps to the Bump towards West Runton. TRUSTEES NEEDED

Have you been wondering about volunteering for a good cause, but want to use your particular skills?

Still working or newly retired with some energy and enthusiasm, but want to “give something back” to your community? Age Concern North Norfolk, based in Sheringham, is a small charity that supports the elderly in the wider area (some with early dementia) with a Day Centre Hub, Intergenerational activities and a Drop in Service. If you join us you will have the chance to make a real and ongoing difference to the lives of older people in our community. As a charity offering Support Groups for Physical and Mental Health, we continue to function in a Covid secure manner whilst we are in Tier 4. If you have current or past business, HR, or administrative expertise, or have previously worked in the Health Sector, your skills will be particularly valuable, but we welcome expressions of interest from all individuals over 18 years of age who are willing to commit regularly approximately 6 hours a month to volunteering with us as a Trustee. This time includes our monthly Trustees’ Meeting and some extra time using your own particular skill set. Trustees usually serve initially for a period of 3 years. We will ask you to commit to a minimum of one year once you have been accepted onto the team. You will be joining a small and friendly core team of dedicated people who will offer any support that may be needed. We will value your unique skills and innovative ideas. If you are interested, please contact ageconcernad@gmail.com or phone 01263 821188 to speak to Alison initially. There will be an informal interview process and a chance for you to ask any questions of your own, as well as find out what being a Trustee is all about. We look forward very much to meeting you. It’s widely recognised that using a silk pillowcase can help to prevent the dreaded bad hair day look! Silk doesn’t catch on the scales of our hair and is recommended by experts as part of hair care. Individual, hand made pillowcases, in an elegant and neutral shade of ivory. Gift wrapped in tissue paper with a smattering of scented beads makes this the perfect gift for the woman who has everything or just as a treat for yourself ............ because you’re worth it!

No. 286 is an intensive rendering of a complex theme: the white 2ndmove threat closes a white line of guard to a potential flight-square but instead opens another line of guard to the same square; 5 black moves defend by closing this second line as well so that the threat would unguard the flight. Two of the defences are mutual interferences between black R and B (Grimshaw theme), the others are relatively simple. With those hints, difficulty 3. This one should be a worthy test of our experts to start the year!

Charles Addison, a Year 12 pupil at Gresham’s School, in Holt, has used his own initiative to raise money for the charity Oddballs, a foundation which is used to spread awareness of Testicular Cancer. He encouraged his fellow pupils to dress up for games and donate money to the charity. Charles, who has supported the charity for a number of years, said “it is important to spread awareness of Testicular Cancer as it is not spoken about widely enough, especially between young men.” A virtual assembly was organised after Charles made contact with the charity, enabling them to speak directly to Gresham’s pupils. Oddballs spoke about the importance of regular checking and the facts about Testicular Cancer. The next step was organising the sports tournament, which asked players of hockey, rugby, badminton, swimming and shooting to wear fancy dress whilst playing on a Saturday morning. The fancy dress retailer ‘Smiffys’ also played their part by kindly providing the pupils with fancy dress accessories.

Lost or unexpected beneficiaries

By Emma Langley,

Solicitor, Hayes + Storr

‘Personal representatives’ is the collective term for an executor or administrator of a deceased persons estate. A personal representative is responsible for ensuring all rightful beneficiaries receive their share of an inheritance. This can be difficult if the beneficiaries are unknown or if there is no will. It is not uncommon for personal representatives to face difficulty tracking down some beneficiaries of an estate, especially if the will was written a long time ago. Lost beneficiaries To comply with their legal duties, personal representatives must take all reasonable steps to trace beneficiaries. This could include: • Making enquiries with other beneficiaries and family members • Conducting searches of death or other public records • Conducting online research • Placing adverts calling for the lost beneficiary to come forward; or • Instructing a tracing agent. If reasonable steps have not been taken, a personal representative can find themselves personally liable to a claim against the estate by a lost beneficiary who later comes forward. Unexpected beneficiaries An unexpected beneficiary is someone who turns up when the personal representative was previously unaware of their existence or entitlement. This is most likely to happen in an intestacy situation or if there is a gift in a will to a class of people, (eg. “my childrenâ€?). If the estate has already been distributed, this can cause significant problems for a personal representative. Protecting yourself against unexpected beneficiaries If you are acting as a personal representative, you can avoid becoming personally liable to beneficiaries of whom you are unaware, by taking certain steps to protect yourself, these can include: - Publishing official notices advertising the death of the deceased and
