News from The Venue - June

A Note from the Editor

Summer is finally here! Just in time for the good weather, we are looking at improving the outside spaces to the Venue, so that we look better and are utilising all the room that we have effectively. For too long, the Venue has been a little shabby looking outside, and now that we have improved the inside to a high standard, we naturally want to extend that. On inspection of the wall adjoining the Manor Walk estate, we realised that the wall was in a sorry state of repair, and so a determined project is underway to repair and improve this over the next few weeks, with plans to replant many outside areas with climbing foliage and relay the driveway, which unfortunately has now been damaged by too many vehicles using our frontage as a turning circle following the Budgens fire. We hope that you will enjoy the transformation. On Wednesday 14th July we have our popular BINGO nights resuming, starting at 7.30pm, doors open at 7. I hope to be able to announce some theatre dates for your diaries soon, as we are now finishing the lighting needed to be able to offer theatre and drama groups a full-size professional Theatre space. This will be first utilised during the Holt Festival, which the Venue will again be a part of. We have our AGM on 23rd June at 7pm, which is open to members of the Venue and Friends of the Venue only this year, due to Covid restrictions. We do have 10 spaces available for interested members of the public, but we do require advance notice by email is you would like to attend. Despite the pandemic, financially we have come out the other side fit and well and raring to get going properly again. Hopefully we are now going to be coming out of restrictions, pending announcements by the Government in June, so things can open fully again, which will be a relief to all. Numbers have been good for all the groups that are currently allowed to meet in the Venue, which is testament to how much we all want to return to normality. For the time being, we do what we can as safely as we can, and very much look forward to the days when we can all relax a bit more! At last, the sun is shining, and we are going to get a summer. Judging by the numbers of visitors about we are set for a busy one at that.

It is good to see everything opening up and businesses doing a brisk trade. The general mood is optimistic with the vaccine programme progressing, but we still need to be careful and keep to the rules a little longer. Local infection rates are very low but likely to rise, at least a little, as we welcome visitors from other regions on holiday.

With Summer comes the increased use of our beaches and enjoying the sea. This is predicted to be a very busy year for the RNLI, so keep to the advice on keeping safe in the water and if you see anyone in diﬃculties alert the lifeguards or call the coastguard by dialing 999. Whatever you are up to in the sunshine, enjoy your June magazine. Keep safe and well.

Happy Retirement Dr Brooks

After 38 years in the NHS and 33 years as a partner at Holt Medical Practice, Dr Alison Brooks is hanging up her stethoscope. After studying medicine at Newcastle University and doing house jobs in the North, Alison worked in Addenbrookes and the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital before spending 6 months volunteering in a rural hospital in India. She returned to Norfolk to complete her GP training and was then offered a partnership at Holt, joining Dr Latten, Dr Chapman, Dr Crawley, and Dr Macleod as the first female partner. She has been here ever since. Reflecting on the many changes to the practice during her time there, Alison recalls the days before mobile phones when she had a stack of 10p coins in her car and knew where all the public phone boxes were, essential during nights and weekends on call. Pre computerisation all the notes were handwritten, and doctors’ handwriting was legendary. When she began working at Holt the surgery was in the centre of the town at Jacob’s Place, but having outgrown those premises it moved to the new site at Kelling Hospital in 2004. Originally the Practice just had surgeries in Holt and Blakeney but in 1996 it merged with the Melton Constable surgery and grew to its current size of 8 partners. Alison has many interests outside medicine, including acting with the Blakeney Players, running a Brownie pack, singing, gardening, trekking, cycling, and sailing. She looks forward to spending more time on these pursuits and with her husband Iain, as well as hoping to do more travelling when restrictions are lifted. She says “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a GP; it is a challenging, interesting, and rewarding job. I am proud to have been part of such a great team and to have worked with so many wonderful people. It has been a privilege to be part of Holt Medical Practice and to serve the surrounding community and I will miss the patients, the staff, and my GP colleagues.”

Let the kids go wild with reading this summer

Visit your local library to register your children for the Summer Reading Challenge for children aged 5 – 11 and pick up their free packs. Every week there will be different activity sheet available throughout the summer holidays. These activities will be in a bag of books hand selected by staff although, of course children can also choose their own books. This year the theme of the challenge is World Wildlife Heroes and is running in partnership with the Reading Agency and the World Wildlife Fund. If your child loves nature, the environment, animals, bugs and slugs this challenge is the perfect opportunity to foster a love of reading. Most importantly the Summer Reading Challenge is fun and engaging for children. In addition, it can support your child to keep up with their reading during the long summer holiday and nurture a lifelong love of books with all the benefits that brings. The Library and Information Service is also hosting some exciting children’s author and storytelling events on-line. Including award winning author, vet, and wildlife enthusiast Gill Lewis and children’s TV presenter, author and vet Jess French. Letheringsett Mill Needs Help

Letheringsett Watermill is one of our local gems. One of only 24 water driven ﬂour mills in the country, a rare one at that, as unlike other mills which are run as historical trusts or by local authorities, Letheringsett is one of only 3

independent mills. Mentioned in the Doomsday Book as ‘Leringseta’ it has a very long and proud history. The present building was built in 1802 and produced flour until 1972 when it became an animal feed mill. The Mill was leased in 1987 by Michael Thurlow with a view to restoring it back to its former glory. Mike was not a miller by trade but researched the process of producing flour and, after much time, money and extensive restoration, production resumed and continues to this day. Mike sadly passed away in 2013 and two years later his wife, Marion, also died, leaving their daughter Michelle to continue their work and develop the business. present time. Major work is currently being carried out to repair the millstones, which gradually wear out with constant use. They have to be redressed about every 2 years (a process where the grinding surfaces are reprofiled having worn down), and that is going on right now. There is only Michelle Thurlow one contractor who can do this work, CD Howell & son, millers from Staffordshire. The stones are made from Derbyshire Gritstone and Dutch Emery Quartz, and the work is costing the Mill £2993, a sum that is hard to find in these difficult times. This has led to Michelle setting up an appeal for funds to get this important work done. She is asking for help via JustGiving. Holt continues to positively adapt itself with the launch of a Sunday Market on 6 June. Following a diﬃcult year, where customer behaviour has certainly shifted towards spending and shopping online, and where many high streets will be nervously looking at what the future holds, Holt bucks the trend and reports the lowest number of available empty shops, a buoyant outlook and potentially the best line up of independents it has had in many years. The market will enhance Holt’s core oﬀer bringing in more local independents, providing visitors and residents of the town an opportunity to spend time together in a great environment. History of the market in Holt Holt had a market back in medieval times selling livestock and produce. It was held in what is now called the Market Place with large removable wooden stalls, awnings and possibly tent-like backs for storage and overnight accommodation for the stallholder. The markets were monthly with a bi-annual fair. At one of these fairs in May 1708, the Great Fire caught hold of the town and many of Holt’s buildings were destroyed. The market was moved at some stage to the area behind the Feathers (where Budgens and the car park are now situated) and closed in 1960.

A Makers market ran last summer in July and August with great success. The foundations were set for something more substantial and long term, Holt Sunday Market ...

What it is? Over 40 stalls – makers, hand-made crafts, artisan food & drink, street food, all produced locally by talented Norfolk folk. There are two free stalls allocated to community/charity organisations each week. There are also communal tables and chairs to allow people to meet and spend time in a socially distanced, outdoor environment, a Vinyl DJ and acoustic buskers, all set over the centre of the historic town of Holt with roads closed giving priority to people as opposed to cars. When is it?

Starts on Sunday 6th June and then runs every ﬁrst Sunday until the 5th December, and every Sunday in July and August. The market is open 10am – 4pm.

divorces, and challenges to the legality of government policy. There are complex and technical factors to be taken into account in any such case, the fine details of which are often lost to the media and many members of the public.

It is vital in any democracy that judges are impartial, independent, and non-political. This ensures that the public, especially those who come before them, can be confident that legal cases will be decided fairly and in accordance with the law.

In the English Middle Ages, the King and his council held judicial power. During the 15th century these powers reduced. The 17th century Stuart dynasty used their powers to overthrow parliament. After the Stuarts were removed in the 1688 Glorious Revolution there was a move to guard against the royal manipulation of the judiciary. This led to William of Orange approving the Act of Settlement of 1701. This established the tenure for judges ‘during good behaviour’ unless parliament removed them.

Judges must be free from all pressure from government or the legal system. This includes individual litigants, pressure groups, the media, self-interest, and other judges. They must have no political affiliations.

This independence is so important as it is vital that a judge decides a case solely on the basis of the evidence put to them in court and in accordance with the law. Only relevant facts and law should form the basis of a judge’s decision. This is the only way judges can carry out their duty to provide fair and impartial justice ‘between citizen and citizen, or between citizen and the state’.

Government has grown, both in size and reach over the last century, and so the need to protect citizens against unlawful acts of government has grown too. This means that the responsibilities of judges have also increased.

Not only must justice be done but, just as importantly, it must be seen to be done. Therefore, it is even more critical that judges are seen to be independent. Any suggestion that a decision might not have been made impartially requires it to be heard again by another judge.

But, whilst an independent and impartial judiciary is a fundamental of democracy, the practicalities of this are often treated with suspicion. Judges have immunity from prosecution when carrying out their judicial role. They are also immune from being sued for defamation for things they say in court.

With any high-profile case comes intense media scrutiny of the judge. Such cases are as wide-ranging as a shocking murder trial, celebrity

So, the principle of judicial independence goes back to the early 18th century. The concept then spread abroad, where it was the model for the US constitution. It was also adopted in Australia, Canada, India, and other common law countries. Refinements and developments have come back to England through the European Court of Human Rights. The Constitutional Reform Act of 2005 has further separated the judiciary and legislature. It created the position of the Lord Chief Justice and removed much of the judicial status of the Lord Chancellor.

Judges do not express any political opinion, often even with family and friends. They eschew all social media. This can lead to them appearing to be out of touch with the country that they serve. The story of the 1960s judge asking, ‘who are the Beatles?’ is, apparently, a myth; but a good one.

Dear friends, Almost midsummer and it is great to see people returning to North Norfolk for their holidays. As it buzzes with activity, the inﬂux of visitors brings a new dynamic to our area. Of course, the return of tourists brings with them concerns about the potential spread of the coronavirus, however, I personally, welcome the tourists. Not only are they great for the local economy but it is great to see people enjoying and having fun in the area we call home.

We often take for granted what is on our doorstep and don’t really appreciate what our beautiful area has to oﬀer. Magniﬁcent beaches, beautiful countryside, fascinating history, holy places, palatial houses, great places to eat and drink, inspiring art, great music, a varied culture and such a variety of independent traders and retailers. Holt and North Norfolk has something for everyone and is a fantastic place to be, why else would hundreds of thousands want to come and visit!

As covid restrictions begin to lift we have to learn to once again share where we live with those who come here seeking some relaxation and refreshment and extend to them a warm North Norfolk welcome, we also need to enjoy it with them and take time to immerse ourselves in what our area has to oﬀer.

The past year has been challenging, diﬃcult, strange, and for some, extremely harrowing. This summer will hopefully provide us with some respite, and we can reconnect with people and places. Are We Human?

Dear Jo, Jung’s theory of synchronicity and the collective unconscious requires there to exist a fundamental connection between all things throughout time and space. Einstein’s General Relativity proves energy and matter are fundamentally the same thing and Schrödinger Quantum Entanglement proves that particles interact with their anti-particles, their opposite spins creating a wave like function unrestricted by the laws of time and space. These two established laws of physics go a long way to substantiating Jung’s theory but for it to be credible the entangled particles would have to retain their spin in the brain during the time we humans take to hold a thought or memory. Prof Matthew Fisher at UCSB solves this problem in his paper Quantum Cognition; the Posner molecule providing the required environment. These three physicists pose the question; are memories and thoughts generated and stored in our brain or, instead, is our brain simply processing entangled information? The research of Johnjoe McFadden, Prof Micro Biology - Surrey, concurs with the latter, that evolution is determined by an algorithm of quantum entangled information. A Sudoku puzzle of sciences that offers a reversed engineered explanation of Jung’s theory; collectively We are a universal quantum algorithm experiencing life, which is the tenet of all major religions and philosophies.

Men sentenced for hare coursing

Dear Jo, Can I use the letters page to give a big thank you to everyone who voted for me in the May 6 elections? I was encouraged by the result, which saw me lose by just 99 votes to the Conservatives' Eric Vardy. Running as an independent was always going to be a challenge up against the party machines, but I believe the numbers show appetite for things to be done differently here and in our neighbouring villages. I also would like to offer my commiserations to Sarah Butikofer, a hard-working county councillor, who lost her seat in the county election. I hope readers will continue to challenge its elected representatives over the decisions made locally, and that at the next set of elections we see an increase in local names on the ballot paper. Kindest regards Margaret Allison "Hare coursing has a terrible impact on our rural communities: it damages property, threatens people's livelihoods and subjects people and families to fear and intimidation.

Three men have been sentenced for hare coursing in Sharrington. Oﬃcers were called shortly after 11.30pm on 16 September 2020 to reports of men with dogs on private land in Sharrington, near Melton Constable.

Police attended the scene and discovered a silver Citroen car and a dead hare inside the vehicle. Using night vision goggles, officers spotted two men with two Lurcher-type dogs hiding in the hedgerow. Two men aged in their 30s, a man aged in his 20s and a teenage boy voluntarily attended Aylsham Police Investigation Centre where they were questioned about the incident. William Mitchell, age 36, of Mangreen Lane in Keswick, near Norwich, Michael Travell, age 35, of Beverley Road, Norwich, and George Harber, age 23, of Shorthorn Road, Stratton Strawless, were subsequently reported for hunting a wild mammal with dogs contrary to section 1 and 6 of the 2004 Hunting Act and summonsed to appear at court. They appeared before Norwich Magistrates' Court on Wednesday (12 May 2021) and pleaded guilty to one count of hunting a wild mammal with dogs. All three were each fined £500 and ordered to pay £145 costs, and a victim surcharge of £50. They were also given Criminal Behaviour Orders for three years. A confiscation order was also made for three dogs which will now be rehomed.

Protecting your dog against Ticks this year

East Anglia is a beautiful area, however, it is also an area classified as “high risk” for ticks. Ticks are most active between mid-March and October, however, with changes in the climate they are becoming active for longer. The most frequently seen tick is the sheep tick although the hedgehog and fox ticks may also make an appearance. All of these species of tick will feed on dogs, cats and humans.

Ticks are unable to jump or fly and travel by climbing on vegetation such as long grass and then waiting for a suitable host to pass by. They attach to this host using their hooked front legs. Following attachment, ticks will spend time choosing a suitable feeding site before attaching to feed via their mouth parts. As ticks take time to attach the act of brushing pets following a walk can reduce the number of ticks actually attaching. Tick bites are usually painless and attaching ticks are often as small as 1.5mm and will increase to the size of a pea after feeding. Not all ticks carry disease, but for infected ticks the action of attaching allows them to transmit diseases such as lymes disease, babesiosis, anaplasmosis and rickettsiosis to the host. The risk of infection transmission increases the longer the tick is attached to the host.

How can we protect our pets?

In order to reduce the spread of tick borne disease we recommend regular tick prevention treatments. These come in the form of tablets, collars and spot-on preparations and will usually kill ticks within 12-24 hours of attachment and last for between 4 and 12 weeks depending on the product chosen. Many of the most effective treatments can

only be prescribed by a veterinary surgeon and so we would advise contacting your vet to discuss the most suitable treatment for your pet.

Icing 100g icing sugar Red/pink food colouring Enough milk to loosen mixture

Method

Combine sugar, butter and vanilla in a bowl or stand mixer, beat till smooth and add eggs one at a time mixing well in between each additional egg (if mix splits, add a spoon of flour and mix well till smooth again). Sift half of the remaining flour into the mix and fold together until all combined, then repeat with remaining flour (take time to not knock too much air out of the mix as this will help the cake rise in the oven). The mixture should be smooth and just drop off of a spatula or spoon, (if mix is too wet, add small amount of flour until correct consistency).

Line a 10” cake tin with butter and baking paper, spoon the mixture into the tin, gently smooth the top and bake in a 160c for 40 minutes or until middle is cooked when tested with a skewer or thin knife. Once cooked through, let cool completely in the tin, gently remove from tin and slice evenly in half length ways and put to side. For the Eton mess filling, whip the cream till it reached soft peaks, fold in the diced strawberries and meringue. Use this mixture to fill the cake to desired amount and top with other half of cake. For icing, mix the icing sugar with enough milk to make a spreadable icing, mix with food colouring till desired colour is achieved. Assemble cake with filling and cover with icing, decorate top with any spare berry mixture and remaining berries, slice and enjoy.

It’s hard to believe that it will be nearly 6-months into 2021 before we can even start to consider re-opening the Age Concern (North Norfolk) Day Centre in Cremer Street, Sheringham. I’m sure many of our regular Clients are waiting with anticipation for the Government’s announcements on June 21st, as are we, so that we can ensure we have all the required actions in place to re-open safely and welcome you all back just as soon as we can.

So, although we still have to be patient for a little longer, I’m sure we can all see a brighter situation ahead, after what has been a very diﬃcult time for us all and a very sad time for some. Keep positive, keep healthy and keep looking forward to meeting up again with staﬀ and friends at the Day Centre.

We have kept in touch with many of our regular Clients by telephone, through Befriending calls for a chat and also to do some shopping and home assistance where necessary. Anyone is welcome to call if ever you need some help. If we can’t provide it, we will be sure to point you in the right direction. Many of our regular Clients have been receiving our ‘Meals on Heels’ lunches and numbers have increased so hopefully, when we do re-open some of those new customers, will join us in person, at the Day Centre. Summer Soup

Soup may not be an obvious choice for the summer, but at our house we eat it all year round, simply because it is so easy to prep in advance, contains loads of goodness, and is super quick to grab and go. In the summer months, having a lovely soup recipe that celebrates the best of the season makes the most of what is available in the shops, and makes for a light and delicious supper when combined with good bread and maybe a hunk of cheese, but can be surprisingly filling for those with a hearty appetite. This recipe uses soya cream, which comes in a long-life carton and will keep happily in your cupboard for ages, is not expensive and has a variety of uses. It also is virtually indistinguishable from dairy single cream in a recipe such as this, and suitable for vegans. If you don’t have any on the shelf, single cream works great. Jersey Royal potatoes, long stemmed broccoli and asparagus are simply delicious, but not the cheapest for a family, so this recipe allows everyone to enjoy them without breaking the bank! Make sure you use the tips AND stalks of the asparagus in the soup, just discarding the tough ends by breaking them off; the same goes for the long-stemmed broccoli. This soup recipe is probably the best that I make, and certainly the most popular, eaten even by those who normally shun vegetables.

Are you in the camp that had more time to spend on exercise and preparing food, take up running and yoga and are feeling better than ever, ready to take on the Summer? Or do you fall into the other camp, where many of us land, that found the year a struggle, mentally draining and emotionally exhausting? Did your diet change as your daily routine changed? Perhaps drunk too much alcohol and lacked the motivation to exercise? Such a prolonged shift in daily behaviours can have a signiﬁcant impact on our health. Now that life is slowly going back to normal, it really is the time to make your health your absolute priority. Most clients who have contacted me recently for nutritional advice, largely wish to address weight gain, digestive health or physical symptoms of stress and oftentimes, all three!

Stress can have a significant impact on our digestion. Firstly, when we are under stress, we are more inclined to eat more palatable foods – in many cases, foods higher in simple carbohydrates and fats, this change influences the bacteria that thrive in our gut and can lead to digestive issues such as constipation, diarrhoea, weight gain and bloating. Stress can also directly affect the gut bacteria through increased stress hormones and inflammation. In turn, the change in gut bacteria can influence eating behaviour and mood, continuing the stress - digestive cycle (1).
