News from The Venue - June

A Note from the Editor

Summer is finally here! Just in time for the good weather, we are looking at improving the outside spaces to the Venue, so that we look better and are utilising all the room that we have effectively. For too long, the Venue has been a little shabby looking outside, and now that we have improved the inside to a high standard, we naturally want to extend that. On inspection of the wall adjoining the Manor Walk estate, we realised that the wall was in a sorry state of repair, and so a determined project is underway to repair and improve this over the next few weeks, with plans to replant many outside areas with climbing foliage and relay the driveway, which unfortunately has now been damaged by too many vehicles using our frontage as a turning circle following the Budgens fire. We hope that you will enjoy the transformation. On Wednesday 14th July we have our popular BINGO nights resuming, starting at 7.30pm, doors open at 7. I hope to be able to announce some theatre dates for your diaries soon, as we are now finishing the lighting needed to be able to offer theatre and drama groups a full-size professional Theatre space. This will be first utilised during the Holt Festival, which the Venue will again be a part of. We have our AGM on 23rd June at 7pm, which is open to members of the Venue and Friends of the Venue only this year, due to Covid restrictions. We do have 10 spaces available for interested members of the public, but we do require advance notice by email is you would like to attend. Despite the pandemic, financially we have come out the other side fit and well and raring to get going properly again. Hopefully we are now going to be coming out of restrictions, pending announcements by the Government in June, so things can open fully again, which will be a relief to all. Numbers have been good for all the groups that are currently allowed to meet in the Venue, which is testament to how much we all want to return to normality. For the time being, we do what we can as safely as we can, and very much look forward to the days when we can all relax a bit more! If you would like to be a part of any of the activities that we have on at the centre, check out the website at www.thevenueholt.com or email us to be a volunteer at holtcommunitycentre@gmail.co.uk Carolyn Burn, Chairperson

At last, the sun is shining, and we are going to get a summer. Judging by the numbers of visitors about we are set for a busy one at that.

It is good to see everything opening up and businesses doing a brisk trade. The general mood is optimistic with the vaccine programme progressing, but we still need to be careful and keep to the rules a little longer. Local infection rates are very low but likely to rise, at least a little, as we welcome visitors from other regions on holiday.

With Summer comes the increased use of our beaches and enjoying the sea. This is predicted to be a very busy year for the RNLI, so keep to the advice on keeping safe in the water and if you see anyone in difficulties alert the lifeguards or call the coastguard by dialing 999. Whatever you are up to in the sunshine, enjoy your June magazine. Keep safe and well.

Jo – Editor.

Happy Retirement Dr Brooks

After 38 years in the NHS and 33 years as a partner at Holt Medical Practice, Dr Alison Brooks is hanging up her stethoscope. After studying medicine at Newcastle University and doing house jobs in the North, Alison worked in Addenbrookes and the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital before spending 6 months volunteering in a rural hospital in India. She returned to Norfolk to complete her GP training and was then offered a partnership at Holt, joining Dr Latten, Dr Chapman, Dr Crawley, and Dr Macleod as the first female partner. She has been here ever since. Reflecting on the many changes to the practice during her time there, Alison recalls the days before mobile phones when she had a stack of 10p coins in her car and knew where all the public phone boxes were, essential during nights and weekends on call. Pre computerisation all the notes were handwritten, and doctors’ handwriting was legendary. When she began working at Holt the surgery was in the centre of the town at Jacob’s Place, but having outgrown those premises it moved to the new site at Kelling Hospital in 2004. Originally the Practice just had surgeries in Holt and Blakeney but in 1996 it merged with the Melton Constable surgery and grew to its current size of 8 partners. Alison has many interests outside medicine, including acting with the Blakeney Players, running a Brownie pack, singing, gardening, trekking, cycling, and sailing. She looks forward to spending more time on these pursuits and with her husband Iain, as well as hoping to do more travelling when restrictions are lifted. She says “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a GP; it is a challenging, interesting, and rewarding job. I am proud to have been part of such a great team and to have worked with so many wonderful people. It has been a privilege to be part of Holt Medical Practice and to serve the surrounding community and I will miss the patients, the staff, and my GP colleagues.”

Letheringsett Mill Needs Help

Letheringsett Watermill is one of our local gems. One of only 24 water driven flour mills in the country, a rare one at that, as unlike other mills which are run as historical trusts or by local authorities, Letheringsett is one of only 3

independent mills. Mentioned in the Doomsday Book as ‘Leringseta’ it has a very long and proud history. The present building was built in 1802 and produced flour until 1972 when it became an animal feed mill. The Mill was leased in 1987 by Michael Thurlow with a view to restoring it back to its former glory. Mike was not a miller by trade but researched the process of producing flour and, after much time, money and extensive restoration, production resumed and continues to this day. Mike sadly passed away in 2013 and two years later his wife, Marion, also died, leaving their daughter Michelle to continue their work and develop the business. Michelle is passionate about continuing her parents’ legacy and keeping her flour production as local as possible. st End_Layout 1 31/01/2020 19:55 Page 1 Grain is sourced within North Norfolk and her flour is supplied to local bakeries and shops. The Mill now produces 15 different flours including West End spelt flour, an ancient Mobile Bar Hire grain introduced to this country by the Romans. present time. Major work is currently being carried out to repair the millstones, which gradually wear out with constant use. They have to be redressed about every 2 years (a process where the grinding surfaces are reprofiled having worn down), and that is going on right now. There is only Michelle Thurlow one contractor who can do this work, CD Howell & son, millers from Staffordshire. The stones are made from Derbyshire Gritstone and Dutch Emery Quartz, and the work is costing the Mill £2993, a sum that is hard to find in these difficult times. This has led to Michelle setting up an appeal for funds to get this important work done. She is asking for help via JustGiving. Anyone wanting to help can go to: https://www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/michelle-thurlow-2?utm_term=J2wrZKz7e and make a donation.

Letheringsett Mill is not only an important historical asset to our area, but it also provides education, with tours of the Mill giving insight into our history, and is contributing to the movement to keep food local and support our growers and producers in North Norfolk.

Holt continues to positively adapt itself with the launch of a Sunday Market on 6 June. Following a difficult year, where customer behaviour has certainly shifted towards spending and shopping online, and where many high streets will be nervously looking at what the future holds, Holt bucks the trend and reports the lowest number of available empty shops, a buoyant outlook and potentially the best line up of independents it has had in many years. The market will enhance Holt’s core offer bringing in more local independents, providing visitors and residents of the town an opportunity to spend time together in a great environment. History of the market in Holt Holt had a market back in medieval times selling livestock and produce. It was held in what is now called the Market Place with large removable wooden stalls, awnings and possibly tent-like backs for storage and overnight accommodation for the stallholder. The markets were monthly with a bi-annual fair. At one of these fairs in May 1708, the Great Fire caught hold of the town and many of Holt’s buildings were destroyed. The market was moved at some stage to the area behind the Feathers (where Budgens and the car park are now situated) and closed in 1960.

A Makers market ran last summer in July and August with great success. The foundations were set for something more substantial and long term, Holt Sunday Market ...

What it is? Over 40 stalls – makers, hand-made crafts, artisan food & drink, street food, all produced locally by talented Norfolk folk. There are two free stalls allocated to community/charity organisations each week. There are also communal tables and chairs to allow people to meet and spend time in a socially distanced, outdoor environment, a Vinyl DJ and acoustic buskers, all set over the centre of the historic town of Holt with roads closed giving priority to people as opposed to cars. When is it?

Starts on Sunday 6th June and then runs every first Sunday until the 5th December, and every Sunday in July and August. The market is open 10am – 4pm.

North Norfolk Macmillan Cancer Support Centre

The North Norfolk Macmillan Cancer Support Centre is well on the way to taking shape, but once it’s finished, and supporting thousands of local people living with cancer, it will be so much more than bricks and mortar.

We’re running a recruitment drive for volunteers, who will be at the heart of supporting this service. Volunteering could mean anything from welcoming patients and their carers at the door, to offering a listening ear, and ensuring we’re fully stocked with cancer information leaflets.

Find out more about what these roles might entail and apply by contacting Anita Martins, Matron at Cromer and District Hospital, Mill Rd, Cromer, NR27 0BU or telephone 01603 646234.

We want the local community to have a hand in shaping the support services and activities on offer. Let us know what you’d like to see offered in the Centre, by scanning the QR code or by using the link on your computer and filling in this short survey https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/CromerHospitalMacmillanCancerSupportCentre/

Judicial independence By Miranda Marshall,

divorces, and challenges to the legality of government policy. There are complex and technical factors to be taken into account in any such case, the fine details of which are often lost to the media and many members of the public.

Director, Hayes + Storr

It is vital in any democracy that judges are impartial, independent, and non-political. This ensures that the public, especially those who come before them, can be confident that legal cases will be decided fairly and in accordance with the law.

In the English Middle Ages, the King and his council held judicial power. During the 15th century these powers reduced. The 17th century Stuart dynasty used their powers to overthrow parliament. After the Stuarts were removed in the 1688 Glorious Revolution there was a move to guard against the royal manipulation of the judiciary. This led to William of Orange approving the Act of Settlement of 1701. This established the tenure for judges ‘during good behaviour’ unless parliament removed them.

Judges must be free from all pressure from government or the legal system. This includes individual litigants, pressure groups, the media, self-interest, and other judges. They must have no political affiliations.

This independence is so important as it is vital that a judge decides a case solely on the basis of the evidence put to them in court and in accordance with the law. Only relevant facts and law should form the basis of a judge’s decision. This is the only way judges can carry out their duty to provide fair and impartial justice ‘between citizen and citizen, or between citizen and the state’.

Government has grown, both in size and reach over the last century, and so the need to protect citizens against unlawful acts of government has grown too. This means that the responsibilities of judges have also increased.

Not only must justice be done but, just as importantly, it must be seen to be done. Therefore, it is even more critical that judges are seen to be independent. Any suggestion that a decision might not have been made impartially requires it to be heard again by another judge.

But, whilst an independent and impartial judiciary is a fundamental of democracy, the practicalities of this are often treated with suspicion. Judges have immunity from prosecution when carrying out their judicial role. They are also immune from being sued for defamation for things they say in court.

With any high-profile case comes intense media scrutiny of the judge. Such cases are as wide-ranging as a shocking murder trial, celebrity

So, the principle of judicial independence goes back to the early 18th century. The concept then spread abroad, where it was the model for the US constitution. It was also adopted in Australia, Canada, India, and other common law countries. Refinements and developments have come back to England through the European Court of Human Rights. The Constitutional Reform Act of 2005 has further separated the judiciary and legislature. It created the position of the Lord Chief Justice and removed much of the judicial status of the Lord Chancellor.

Judges do not express any political opinion, often even with family and friends. They eschew all social media. This can lead to them appearing to be out of touch with the country that they serve. The story of the 1960s judge asking, ‘who are the Beatles?’ is, apparently, a myth; but a good one.

Dear friends, Almost midsummer and it is great to see people returning to North Norfolk for their holidays. As it buzzes with activity, the influx of visitors brings a new dynamic to our area. Of course, the return of tourists brings with them concerns about the potential spread of the coronavirus, however, I personally, welcome the tourists. Not only are they great for the local economy but it is great to see people enjoying and having fun in the area we call home.

We often take for granted what is on our doorstep and don’t really appreciate what our beautiful area has to offer. Magnificent beaches, beautiful countryside, fascinating history, holy places, palatial houses, great places to eat and drink, inspiring art, great music, a varied culture and such a variety of independent traders and retailers. Holt and North Norfolk has something for everyone and is a fantastic place to be, why else would hundreds of thousands want to come and visit!

As covid restrictions begin to lift we have to learn to once again share where we live with those who come here seeking some relaxation and refreshment and extend to them a warm North Norfolk welcome, we also need to enjoy it with them and take time to immerse ourselves in what our area has to offer.

Visit our YouTube channel “St Andrew the Apostle, Holt” for live streaming and to view past services and organ recitals.

The past year has been challenging, difficult, strange, and for some, extremely harrowing. This summer will hopefully provide us with some respite, and we can reconnect with people and places. Relationships are important and need to be sustained, time spent relaxing with family and friends in beautiful places is time well spent.

LITTLE LAMB’S PARENT & TODDLER GROUP meets every Wednesday during term time 9.30am – 11.00am usually in the Parish Church Hall in Street Hall. Currently, meeting in the King George Playing Field in Peacock Lane. All parents/carers are welcome to come along and meet with friends and make new ones. NEWS FROM THE TOWER: After months of being silent, the bells are ringing out over Holt once again. Practice night has resumed on Friday evenings and people are being called to worship on Sunday. Our thanks to the tower captain and her committed team of ringers on their return.

I appreciate very much being rooted in a place and in a community and what a place and what a community! This summer let us enjoy it, appreciate it and give thanks for it.

Warmest regards, Fr. Howard

Are We Human?

Dear Jo, Jung’s theory of synchronicity and the collective unconscious requires there to exist a fundamental connection between all things throughout time and space. Einstein’s General Relativity proves energy and matter are fundamentally the same thing and Schrödinger Quantum Entanglement proves that particles interact with their anti-particles, their opposite spins creating a wave like function unrestricted by the laws of time and space. These two established laws of physics go a long way to substantiating Jung’s theory but for it to be credible the entangled particles would have to retain their spin in the brain during the time we humans take to hold a thought or memory. Prof Matthew Fisher at UCSB solves this problem in his paper Quantum Cognition; the Posner molecule providing the required environment. These three physicists pose the question; are memories and thoughts generated and stored in our brain or, instead, is our brain simply processing entangled information? The research of Johnjoe McFadden, Prof Micro Biology - Surrey, concurs with the latter, that evolution is determined by an algorithm of quantum entangled information. A Sudoku puzzle of sciences that offers a reversed engineered explanation of Jung’s theory; collectively We are a universal quantum algorithm experiencing life, which is the tenet of all major religions and philosophies.

Men sentenced for hare coursing

Dear Jo, Can I use the letters page to give a big thank you to everyone who voted for me in the May 6 elections? I was encouraged by the result, which saw me lose by just 99 votes to the Conservatives' Eric Vardy. Running as an independent was always going to be a challenge up against the party machines, but I believe the numbers show appetite for things to be done differently here and in our neighbouring villages. I also would like to offer my commiserations to Sarah Butikofer, a hard-working county councillor, who lost her seat in the county election. I hope readers will continue to challenge its elected representatives over the decisions made locally, and that at the next set of elections we see an increase in local names on the ballot paper. Yours Sincerely Jono Read, Hempstead Rd, Holt

Thank You

Dear Jo, Margaret Allison and family would like to thank all kind people who sent cards and messages of condolence and donations for Norfolk &Waveney Prostate Cancer Support Group and the East Anglian Air Ambulance on the sad passing of John. Also, many thanks to Helen of Lloyd Durham and Father Howard of St Andrew’s Church for their excellent service and sympathy in arranging the funeral and committal in these difficult times. A memorial service is hoped to be arranged at a later date when possible, details of which will be announced. Kindest regards Margaret Allison "Hare coursing has a terrible impact on our rural communities: it damages property, threatens people's livelihoods and subjects people and families to fear and intimidation.

Three men have been sentenced for hare coursing in Sharrington. Officers were called shortly after 11.30pm on 16 September 2020 to reports of men with dogs on private land in Sharrington, near Melton Constable.

Police attended the scene and discovered a silver Citroen car and a dead hare inside the vehicle. Using night vision goggles, officers spotted two men with two Lurcher-type dogs hiding in the hedgerow. Two men aged in their 30s, a man aged in his 20s and a teenage boy voluntarily attended Aylsham Police Investigation Centre where they were questioned about the incident. William Mitchell, age 36, of Mangreen Lane in Keswick, near Norwich, Michael Travell, age 35, of Beverley Road, Norwich, and George Harber, age 23, of Shorthorn Road, Stratton Strawless, were subsequently reported for hunting a wild mammal with dogs contrary to section 1 and 6 of the 2004 Hunting Act and summonsed to appear at court. They appeared before Norwich Magistrates' Court on Wednesday (12 May 2021) and pleaded guilty to one count of hunting a wild mammal with dogs. All three were each fined £500 and ordered to pay £145 costs, and a victim surcharge of £50. They were also given Criminal Behaviour Orders for three years. A confiscation order was also made for three dogs which will now be rehomed.

The teenage boy was told no further action would be taken against him. PC Chris Shelley, Norfolk Police's Rural Crime Officer, said: email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

Big Thank You

Protecting your dog against Ticks this year

East Anglia is a beautiful area, however, it is also an area classified as “high risk” for ticks. Ticks are most active between mid-March and October, however, with changes in the climate they are becoming active for longer. The most frequently seen tick is the sheep tick although the hedgehog and fox ticks may also make an appearance. All of these species of tick will feed on dogs, cats and humans.

Ticks are unable to jump or fly and travel by climbing on vegetation such as long grass and then waiting for a suitable host to pass by. They attach to this host using their hooked front legs. Following attachment, ticks will spend time choosing a suitable feeding site before attaching to feed via their mouth parts. As ticks take time to attach the act of brushing pets following a walk can reduce the number of ticks actually attaching. Tick bites are usually painless and attaching ticks are often as small as 1.5mm and will increase to the size of a pea after feeding. Not all ticks carry disease, but for infected ticks the action of attaching allows them to transmit diseases such as lymes disease, babesiosis, anaplasmosis and rickettsiosis to the host. The risk of infection transmission increases the longer the tick is attached to the host.

How can we protect our pets?

In order to reduce the spread of tick borne disease we recommend regular tick prevention treatments. These come in the form of tablets, collars and spot-on preparations and will usually kill ticks within 12-24 hours of attachment and last for between 4 and 12 weeks depending on the product chosen. Many of the most effective treatments can

only be prescribed by a veterinary surgeon and so we would advise contacting your vet to discuss the most suitable treatment for your pet.

At Toll Barn Vets, North Walsham, we understand that choosing the correct flea and tick protection for your pet is a minefield and so offer our clients free of charge parasite protection consultations with

Laser Facelift at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic

Sagging jawline is a common concern for many men and women. They do not want major surgery but are looking for some tightening and lifting to make their jawline more defined. Thanks to modern technology we are able to achieve this in a number of different ways. We can achieve a very pleasing profile with our treatments.

The Tick Tick List! • Ensure pets are treated regularly with an effective tick treatment as per manufacturers guidelines • Brush or wash pets after walks to remove unattached ticks • Check pets thoroughly daily and contact your vet if any attached ticks are found • Remove any attached ticks as soon as possible after finding them

Don’t forget, we are here to help so if you are battling with keeping your pet tick free this year please give the Toll Barn Vets team a call on 01692 407126.

More advanced options We do offer a variety of minimally invasive options such as laser facelift, one stitch facelift or full face and neck lifts under local anaesthesia so we can offer these if you have a significant amount of lose skin and feel surgery is your only option. Give us a call on 01603 736487 or log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk to book your appointment and start your journey towards a tighter jawline and neck.

What causes jawline sagging, appearance of jowls and loss of definition in this area? A number of changes occur due to ageing, sun-damage, smoking and also genetics contributes to our looks in a major way. Did you know that changes are not only skin deep but even our bones lose volume with age? The jawbone also recedes resulting in loss of bony support and combined with loss of fat, muscle, skin thinning and gravity causes sagging in this area of face and neck. How can you help me achieve a tighter jawline and neck? Thanks to modern technology, our treatments, sun-protection and awareness; we find people are maintaining their youthful looks for longer. Our journey begins with a consultation and assessment to determine causes of your particular concern so that a customized treatment plan can be devised. We can usually offer you a choice. Our treatment recommendation may include one or more of the following.

Radiofrequency skin tightening This device can tighten the skin without any pain or discomfort and requires no preparation with numbing creams. It takes about 40-45 minutes to treat the whole face. Patients love this treatment because they are comfortable without pain medication or numbing creams.

email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

Ticks found on your pet should be removed as soon as possible using a tick remover to ensure that the mouth parts do not remain within the skin once the body of the tick is removed. At Toll Barn Vets tick removal is one of our free of charge procedures for our clients to help keep your pets in tip top condition.

Volume restoration We can use dermal fillers or your own fat to re-create your jawline and chin. Chin and jawline are difficult to inject so you need an experienced doctor to do these and not someone who injects fillers ‘on the side’. We can inject fillers to contour the jawline, angle of the jaw and chin. Botulinum toxin injections remain popular for this area as in Nefertiti lift. As we age, we start to lose a little chin projection. This can be restored using fillers.

How to restore a youthful jawline? Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic is fully equipped to help you achieve a tighter jawline and neck.

Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing Fractional Skin Resurfacing is the only method, which creates new skin. This results in a decrease in sunspots, fine lines, wrinkles and acne scarring and a fresher, more youthful skin tone and texture. The Fractional approach stimulates quick healing, while leaving your skin’s surface intact, with no lasting redness.

Method

Combine sugar, butter and vanilla in a bowl or stand mixer, beat till smooth and add eggs one at a time mixing well in between each additional egg (if mix splits, add a spoon of flour and mix well till smooth again). Sift half of the remaining flour into the mix and fold together until all combined, then repeat with remaining flour (take time to not knock too much air out of the mix as this will help the cake rise in the oven). The mixture should be smooth and just drop off of a spatula or spoon, (if mix is too wet, add small amount of flour until correct consistency).

Line a 10” cake tin with butter and baking paper, spoon the mixture into the tin, gently smooth the top and bake in a 160c for 40 minutes or until middle is cooked when tested with a skewer or thin knife. Once cooked through, let cool completely in the tin, gently remove from tin and slice evenly in half length ways and put to side. For the Eton mess filling, whip the cream till it reached soft peaks, fold in the diced strawberries and meringue. Use this mixture to fill the cake to desired amount and top with other half of cake. For icing, mix the icing sugar with enough milk to make a spreadable icing, mix with food colouring till desired colour is achieved. Assemble cake with filling and cover with icing, decorate top with any spare berry mixture and remaining berries, slice and enjoy.

AWAITING GOVERNMENT GUIDELINES FOR RE-OPENING

get to know you, including our new Day Centre manager, Anneliese Maerz who joined us recently and who has lots of interesting ideas for events and activities she hopes you will enjoy.

It’s hard to believe that it will be nearly 6-months into 2021 before we can even start to consider re-opening the Age Concern (North Norfolk) Day Centre in Cremer Street, Sheringham. I’m sure many of our regular Clients are waiting with anticipation for the Government’s announcements on June 21st, as are we, so that we can ensure we have all the required actions in place to re-open safely and welcome you all back just as soon as we can.

So, although we still have to be patient for a little longer, I’m sure we can all see a brighter situation ahead, after what has been a very difficult time for us all and a very sad time for some. Keep positive, keep healthy and keep looking forward to meeting up again with staff and friends at the Day Centre.

We have kept in touch with many of our regular Clients by telephone, through Befriending calls for a chat and also to do some shopping and home assistance where necessary. Anyone is welcome to call if ever you need some help. If we can’t provide it, we will be sure to point you in the right direction. Many of our regular Clients have been receiving our ‘Meals on Heels’ lunches and numbers have increased so hopefully, when we do re-open some of those new customers, will join us in person, at the Day Centre. But, for all of you, I am sure you are as eager as we are to see you seated around a table again with friends, enjoying a hot meal and dessert, a cup of tea and a good old catch-up. On your return you will see some new faces waiting to meet, greet and

Summer Soup

Soup may not be an obvious choice for the summer, but at our house we eat it all year round, simply because it is so easy to prep in advance, contains loads of goodness, and is super quick to grab and go. In the summer months, having a lovely soup recipe that celebrates the best of the season makes the most of what is available in the shops, and makes for a light and delicious supper when combined with good bread and maybe a hunk of cheese, but can be surprisingly filling for those with a hearty appetite. This recipe uses soya cream, which comes in a long-life carton and will keep happily in your cupboard for ages, is not expensive and has a variety of uses. It also is virtually indistinguishable from dairy single cream in a recipe such as this, and suitable for vegans. If you don’t have any on the shelf, single cream works great. Jersey Royal potatoes, long stemmed broccoli and asparagus are simply delicious, but not the cheapest for a family, so this recipe allows everyone to enjoy them without breaking the bank! Make sure you use the tips AND stalks of the asparagus in the soup, just discarding the tough ends by breaking them off; the same goes for the long-stemmed broccoli. This soup recipe is probably the best that I make, and certainly the most popular, eaten even by those who normally shun vegetables.

Minty Summer Veg Soup 1 onion, finely chopped 1 large leek, finely chopped Small bag Jersey Royal potatoes (or a good handful) 3 carrots, finely diced 3 sticks celery, chopped into small chunks Bunch long stemmed broccoli, chopped Handful summer beans, chopped Mug of frozen peas, defrosted Bunch asparagus, chopped into small pieces Tin haricot beans Small handful wholewheat spaghetti, broken into small pieces ¾ Small carton soya cream Dried mint (or a handful of fresh finely chopped if you have some in the garden) Seasoning: Tsp white miso paste, mixed with a little hot water

From Holt Consulting Rooms

Pamela Taylor Dip ION FdSc mBANT How are you feeling after the past year, how do you feel physically and mentally?

Are you in the camp that had more time to spend on exercise and preparing food, take up running and yoga and are feeling better than ever, ready to take on the Summer? Or do you fall into the other camp, where many of us land, that found the year a struggle, mentally draining and emotionally exhausting? Did your diet change as your daily routine changed? Perhaps drunk too much alcohol and lacked the motivation to exercise? Such a prolonged shift in daily behaviours can have a significant impact on our health. Now that life is slowly going back to normal, it really is the time to make your health your absolute priority. Most clients who have contacted me recently for nutritional advice, largely wish to address weight gain, digestive health or physical symptoms of stress and oftentimes, all three!

Stress can have a significant impact on our digestion. Firstly, when we are under stress, we are more inclined to eat more palatable foods – in many cases, foods higher in simple carbohydrates and fats, this change influences the bacteria that thrive in our gut and can lead to digestive issues such as constipation, diarrhoea, weight gain and bloating. Stress can also directly affect the gut bacteria through increased stress hormones and inflammation. In turn, the change in gut bacteria can influence eating behaviour and mood, continuing the stress - digestive cycle (1). Nutritional Therapy can help you break this cycle by addressing the underlying digestive issues, incorporating functional foods such as pre and probiotics and helping you re-stablish good dietary habits ensuring you are getting enough nutrients from the foods that you eat.

Pop all the veg except the asparagus and haricot beans and peas into a large saucepan with a good glug of olive oil, and gently sweat for 5 mins with the lid on over a medium heat. Add boiling water and bring up to the boil, then simmer gently for about 15 mins until the veg is softening, and then add in the mint, asparagus, haricot, spaghetti and peas. Simmer for 8 mins and add the miso and cream, stir and simmer very gently (do not allow to boil) for a further 3 mins and serve. Keeps well in the fridge for up to 3 days. Carolyn Burn

The Holt Cup

North Norfolk Photographic Society held a third club competition which again – due to the impossibility of holding live meetings, was via Zoom. That technology actually suits a camera club very well; judges and members do not have to travel great distances, and everybody gets a good look at the pictures – not always easy from the back of a hall! The judge on this occasion was David Steel, who did not have to travel to Holt from Cambridge where he is based. He had 72 photographs entered into the contest by members and gave a fair and honest comment on every one of them. He was not asked to give numeric marks – just to award Gold to what he judged to be the very best pictures, then silver, bronze and highly

The Holt Cup initiative is being set up and managed by The Wandering Whelk Café – we thank them for their enthusiasm and time. Greening Holt and The Holt Cup branding has been made possible by the generosity of One Agency (based in Norwich Cambridge London – and Holt) brand consultants. We thank them for bringing GH visually to life.

Enthusiasm and knowledge for such a project came via the first UK town scheme - The Shrewsbury Cup. A chance viewing of an Instagram post led to a zoom meet with Greening Holt and the idea of introducing a similar scheme to Holt town in Norfolk was born. We thank the team in Shrewsbury for sharing their knowledge and giving us moral support.

New name, same Foodbank

Cromer and District Foodbank was set up in 2012 to meet the needs of people in crisis around the Cromer area. Since that time the area covered and the network of distribution centres has increased and now we cover approximately 200 square miles of North Norfolk through our distribution centres at Cromer, Sheringham, North Walsham, Holt, Aylsham and Stalham, plus an outlet at Wells. We have been considering changing our name to reflect the increased scope of our operation and now it has been decided to action this. So, we are delighted to announce that from the end of June we will be known as North Norfolk Foodbank. There will be nothing different in the way we operate, we will continue to meet the needs of people in crisis across the district, but we hope the new name gives a better representation of who we are and enables us to reach more people in need. During the last financial year, we saw the number of food vouchers fulfilled up by 27% to 2081, the number of people fed up by 42% and the number of children fed up by 68%. We coped with this extra demand through the generosity of our food donors as our donations were up 50% to 66,659kg. Not only that, but we received a significant increase in financial donations, which enabled us to provide extra items of need and top up stock levels where they were running low. We also have continued our Energybank scheme to support those needing help to pay their energy bills, through the generous support of donors and grant funding. So, thank you to all our donors, we really do appreciate your support. If you intend to continue supporting us financially, please note this name change. If you support through standing order, direct debit or Virgin Money Giving, you will not need to do anything. However, if you donate by cheque, please ensure that from now on they are payable to North Norfolk Foodbank. If you need help, please contact the office on 07826 376343 or by email. In June, please contact the finance team at finance@cromerdistrict. foodbank.org.uk but from July please use the new address, finance@northnorfolk.foodbank.org.uk For general questions, please contact info@cromerdistrict.foodbank.org.uk and, again from July, contact info@northnorfolk.foodbank.org.uk

Wells Community Hospital Update

It has been a busy few weeks and we are pleased to be welcoming back our volunteers, clinics and services. We are always on the look out for new volunteers – so if you have a few hours spare, please do think of us – we are a completely non-profit organisation. So, any help is really appreciated. A massive thank you goes to the group from Alderman Peel High School, who have been helping to paint our garden furniture each week, I am sure when you visit us you will be equally impressed. We have secured funding to build a Community Garden, so we will start this shortly – if you are handy with a saw, we have lots of raised beds to build – please get in touch. The Community Hub is still running, we also have the foodbank here on site, please do not wait to call us if you need help and support, if we can not help, we will find someone who can. Finally, we would like to thank our Trustees for their time and support. We have an excellent group of committed Trustees who help keep the Charity and Services going for our community. We sadly have to say farewell to Rosalie Monbiot who has recently stood down as a Trustee, her support, diligence, commitment and humour has been hugely appreciated, Thank you. The Hive Café and Gardens We have added a café in the Hospital Garden Room, where anyone is welcome. We offer tea and exceptional coffee, light bites and delicious cakes! We can provide cream teas, with afternoon teas available (booking in advance). We have a beautiful outside seating area, where you can enjoy our gardens and beautiful views. The Hive can also be booked for functions and events. We also have free parking and are dog friendly - please do pop along. Stress Support with Homeopathy Stress can be a common problem for many of us at various times throughout our lives. Stress, in small doses, can improve our performance, help us stay focused and protect us from exhaustion. Over the last 18 months with many of us experiencing larger amounts of stress, this has become even more of an issue. Constant stress causes our inner alarm system to remain turned on for long periods of time and we find it increasingly difficult to switch it off. This can, over time, lead to varying health problem such as headaches, loss of appetite, fatigue, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, palpitations, high blood pressure and many more conditions which can impact on our day-to-day life, work and relationships. The good news is there are some great ways to help combat stress naturally. Homeopathy is one of those ways and is a natural form of complementary medicine which works with our own natural healing process and can stimulate the body enabling it to heal itself. Homeopathy treats each person as a unique individual and addresses the underlying issues that lead to the stress as well as the symptoms themselves. Homeopathic remedies are easy to take and are natural, safe and effective. You will find your local Homeopath Melanie Cook LCPH MCPH RMANM at Holt Holistic Centre. Melanie has over 22 years practising experience and helps people with stress related conditions on a daily basis as well as numerous other health issues. Melanie also gives advice on healthy eating and supplements and can explain why eating stress fighting foods such as oily fish, coconut oil, almonds, avocados, spinach and pumpkin seeds can be so beneficial. The Gallant Gardner

There are many different flavours when it comes to mint from chocolate to orange and so on. Parsley comes as either flat leafed or curly and loves the sun and a moist growing condition. It can take some shade as well. Keep cutting it and it will thrive through the season. It will benefit from a feed as well. Lemon Balm also shares the aggressive growth habit of mint, which can quickly take over small garden spaces, because of this, I plant lemon balm in containers. It’s a hardy perennial even over-wintering in pots. Give it the same soil mixture (potting soilcompost) as mint, and water often. It needs ample moisture for the best flavour and what flavour! The glossy green leaves both smell and taste like lemons. It’s great in fruit salads, tea, lemonade, and marinades. If you would like to know more about herbs, then Jekka McVicar New Book of Herbs is an out-standing reference.

The Best 7 Herbs for Containers June 2021

This is the time of year to really start thinking about growing some new fresh herbs for the kitchen, outdoor cooking or for drinks. There are many benefits to growing herbs in containers, especially now new potatoes are on the market, and it will not be long before we are digging them, I do like mint in mine!

So it’s all about access and to have mint by your doorstep is a very good way of having them easily accessible, easy to keep them watered and if they are in a small container then those that grow aggressively can be restricted, such as mint that tends to take over. You can also choose your fa-vourite herbs as well and keep them near and handy. I have chosen my top seven herbs that can be grown in containers they are: - Basil, Greek Oregano, Rosemary, Thyme, Mint, Parsley and Lemon balm. However, you do not need to stick to this list, just add your favourites.

Depending on the setting the container can be a large pot, wooden box, terracotta herb planter, tin, fabric container or anything else that will hold soil and plants providing it has drainage, this is most important. It also needs to be clean so a good wash will get rid of any unwanted diseases. The soil needs to be a combination of loam and multipurpose compost, something that will not dry out too quickly and has some body for the plants to feed on. When it comes to feeding the herbs, this should be done occasionally with a seaweed feed or liquid feed such as tomato feed watered in.

Chris Wright

The majority of the herbs that have been chosen love the sun, so a warm sunny position will pro-vide the best location for your container. Some of the herbs will need more water than others so bear in mind the Mediterranean climate, so don’t over water. To prevent the herbs going to seed or growing too big then harvest regularly. You can always have a bunch of herbs drying in the kitchen, as well as fresh outside.

So, lets talk about the herbs, I have selected: Basil is very easy to grow from seed or buy locally, it will thrive in a warm atmosphere loves a well-drained soil in a sunny position. It is very sweet smelling; it also needs cutting regularly and if you see the flowers start to appear then cut them off. Greek Oregano is a very vigorous grower and putting it in a container it will thrive. It has silvery small leaves, these are packed with flavour, perfect for topping homemade pizza and bruschetta, as well as adding to vinaigrettes and marinades. Rosemary can come as an upright plant or prostrate (laying down) which would be perfect for flowing over the edges of the container. It is a woody plant and once you have one you can easily propagate more plants from the side shoots. This plant does not like being over watered. So be sparing with the water and it will flourish. The needle like leaves are perfect for roast potatoes, lamb etc and provide a beautiful aromatic flavour. Thyme is one of the best herbs for container gardening; it’s low maintenance, drought-tolerant, and can take a bit of neglect. It looks fantastic when planted at the front of a container where the tiny leaves can mound over the edge of the pot. Give it full sun and don’t overwater; it’s drought-resistant and prefers its soil on the dry side. There are All covid measures apply many different thymes each with their Open 7 days a week own distinct colouring and smell. Bookings now being taken Mint is a very aggressive plant and will take over if allowed. I would plant it in a 4 Lee’s Yard, Holt inch pot and sink this in the container Telephone 01263 710138 with the other herbs, this will stop it overwhelming the other plants. Mint likes Email: contact@thesnugholt.co.uk a rich soil and keep it moist. You can use it Facebook ...The Snug cafe/bistro holt for cooking, drinks and in fruit dishes.

Lost World - Don’t mention the war! (part 2)

Les Kinsley’s recollections continued with help from Mr Stanley Vardigan aka Squeaker, recorded by Heather Bowes. On Sunday afternoons, everyone went to bed for a rest. My sister Betty and I were sent off upstairs for this, but we heard a plane flying around and got up to the window to look. It was a lone German bomber. The pilot was flying round machine gunning the village. Then he bombed the water towers at the railway yard. The blast blew us away from the window. You can still see the repairs up on the towers to this day. They said the fighters at the grass strip at Matlaske caught up with him as he went out to sea and shot him down. There were bombers at Foulsham. We saw them fly over Melton and Briston in the afternoon on their way to raids. When they came back at first light, I would be on my way to work. I would look up at them as some of them came over very low. They would be very heavily damaged, and I sometimes saw big holes in their wings. You could see daylight! One morning, one crashed into the railway bridge above Hillside. All the poor crew were killed. There is now a memorial to them on the new housing estate. One really good thing about the war was that they housed the Land Girls at Thurning Hall. Mr Barwick ran the local taxi, and about 8 or 9 of us used to share the cost of a ride there. He always made us walk back though. There was a policeman guarding the entrance, but we knew how to sneak round the back. The girls would climb out of the windows and join us in the backs of the lorries which were parked there overnight. Old Barwick usually lured a girl or two into his taxi. There was a lot of black-market stuff going on. The farmers were the worst at this as they had plenty of opportunity. My boss was taking a large basket of eggs to Norwich but he was stopped by the police at Horsford. He pretended he was taking them to the hospital, so he got away without going to court, but of course he didn’t get to sell his eggs! Another farmer killed bullocks to sell on the black market, keeping them out of sight of inspectors by using a winch to hide them up in the barn Holt Footcare 21_Layout 1 isolated 04/03/2021 Page 1way of getting off rafters.Mar Raising ducks in pits 15:57 was another ration meat. It was hard to get extra feed for them and one local farmer

made extra money by selling corn with added sand. This made him very unpopular with customers, but they could not report him! Of course, every family had a pig in the garden. We even got extra coupons for its feed. We all raised extra pigs to sell for cash, and even the local bobby joined in that little bit of mischief. My boss came up to me one day and informed me that he had written for permission to keep me out of being called up into the army. I was furious but it was too late, and I had to stay on the farm. I suspect my parents were happy about this though.

New Extension at Holt Surgery & Refurbishment of Melton Surgery

Holt Surgery

Holt Medical Practice have now received approval from the NHS bodies that commission our services to extend the current premises at Holt Surgery. The practice is very pleased to announce that the new extension to the rear of the building is cleared to start on 7 June 2021. This building will support the practice to be able to provide services in a sustainable way. The extension will be to the rear of the existing building to create another wing: Wing D. It will provide: • 7 additional consulting rooms (both for in person and virtual consultations) • The ability to offer more appointments and a variety of different services • A large training / group consultation room for both staff and community use • An overall improvement to the patient experience In addition to the new extension, all existing consultation rooms and public areas will be being upgraded and redecorated.

Disruption at Holt Surgery

We apoligise in advance for the additional road noise and traffic that will be experienced on the Kelling Hospital site during the building works (7 Jun 2021 – 23 Dec 2021). We will endeavour to minimise any impact to the residents and users of the site.

Throughout the project, there will also be some disruption to clinical rooms and public spaces as we redecorate and upgrade our facilities throughout. We will endeavour to ensure the impact on our ability to deliver business as usual from the Holt Surgery is as minimal as possible.

Melton Surgery

Melton is undergoing a well overdue refurbishment. All consultation rooms, waiting and staff areas, toilets and car parks will be affected. The reception/waiting area is getting a face lift and all clinical areas are being upgraded in line with current infection, prevention and control guidelines. The result will create a more professional healthcare centre for us all..

Disruption & Closure at Melton Surgery

Works will start 28th June and run until 24th September. During this period there will be some disruption and for a 7-week period (9th Aug to 24th September) the Surgery will close entirely for consultations but remain open (from a temporary hatch) for medication collections and ordering.

Looking Forwards

We are so excited for these works to be undertaken. It will have a positive impact to the patient experience at Melton and at Holt it will mean we are able to host a wider range of services where previously space was a limiting factor. We realise the disruption may feel painful along the way, but hopefully it will be short-lived, and the end result will be worth it. We are very grateful for your patience and understanding during this period.

Kind regards, All the Partners at Holt Medical Practice

Think Before you Dip

We are at the time of year when people are lured to the water; be it in the sea, a pool, afloat and recklessly, secluded ponds and rivers. Unfortunately, it is inevitable that there will be at least one tragedy this summer in Norfolk and there need not be. Mental attitudes such as “It will never happen to me or any of my children” and “Water Safety, I don't know what all the fuss is about,” leads people into a false sense of security.

There is a solution to this problem and that is water safety education in schools and in the home. Talking about the home, pause and think of the places where you or your children can drown in the home? This proves that water safety does actually begin in the home. Out and about, life jackets and buoyancy aids are paramount for all when afloat. Even if you have swum the channel, you can still drown if you slip in or your boat should capsize because other factors can claim your life such as unseen currents, the freezing cold water (even on a hot day) banging your head as you fall – the list is endless. With a life jacket or buoyancy aid you stand an excellent chance of survival. Another problem on our water ways has been drinking and drowning. If only individuals - who went back to their boat and paid particular attention to the effect alcohol can have on them slipping into the in the water they may still be alive to-day. Silk Pillowcases

by

Joneth

It’s widely recognised that using a silk pillowcase can help to prevent the dreaded bad hair day look! Silk doesn’t catch on the scales of our hair and is recommended by experts as part of hair care. Individual, hand made pillowcases, in an elegant and neutral shade of ivory. Gift wrapped in tissue paper with a smattering of scented beads makes this the perfect gift for the woman who has everything or just as a treat for yourself ............ because you’re worth it!

When on the beach, swim between the lifeguard flags and parallel to the shore. Supervise children all the times. It only takes an average of three minutes for someone to drown. Children who paddle alone can slip over and it only needs a small volume of water to drown in. Obey all flags and notices. A red flag means absolutely no swimming - no matter how tranquil and appetising the water looks. Keep out of rivers and ponds, they are very dangerous and unhealthy. If you do adhere to a proper mind set this summer, you are no doubt in for a very enjoyable safe time both in and on the water.

Just £26.99 including free local delivery

Chinese Boxing

Local actor and writer Mark Kitto tackles China, on stage in July. In 1996 Mark Kitto left Norfolk for China. Eighteen years later, having made and lost a fortune and written two books (both launched at Holt Bookshop) he returned home and began Mark plays Sir Claude a ‘late’ career as an actor. Until Covid it was MacDonald, British Minister to going well, with work as an understudy in the Peking, 1900 West End and some good stage and film roles. When theatres shut, a cousin in the business suggested Mark write a one man play. ‘Every actor should have one.’ The result is ‘Chinese Boxing’, which tackles the very current and topical question: why can’t China and ‘The West’ get along? Mark uses the Boxer Uprising of 1900, a nod to the Chinese tradition to use history as allegory. Sir Claude MacDonald, former minister to Peking, will – in 1912 – present a lecture to the local Royal Asiatic Society about his experience commanding the ‘Defence of the Legations’, where several hundred foreign diplomats held off the rebel army for 55 days until relieved by an international force. Sir Claude says he will ‘take you back to Peking in 1900’. With theatrical licence, he does just that. There you hear the story from the Chinese side. It is not straightforward and goes a long way to answering the question posed by the play. As a national newspaper columnist who lives locally said of a preview: ‘stimulating and original – I learned tons.’ ‘Chinese Boxing’ is at Brancaster Village Hall on 8 July, Wells Maltings on 9 July, and Sheringham Little Theatre on 15 July. Call the venues or visit their websites for tickets. Will Benedict

Blakeney Rowing Club

Two Skiffs Together at Blakeney. The return to rowing has been hugely enjoyable for Blakeney Rowing Club. Being on the water with other members of a crew is always a pleasure and over the last few weeks it has also been great to see so many new rowers appreciating the fun of propelling a skiff. Another bonus has been the fact that both the club’s beautiful vessels – Hoi Larntan and Bluejacket – have been rowed alongside each other on several expeditions to Blakeney Point or towards Cley. This has provided opportunities for friendly competition or for drifting and chatting during refreshment breaks. See pictures of such activities in beautiful surroundings on crablakeney.wordpress.com. Competition exists comfortably alongside the social rowing. On 7th May, a crew finished fifth in a five-mile row. Times were collated and compared with clubs, each rowing in their own area, from all over the world. This was a great performance by Blakeney rowers. There is another such event on 9th July as a precursor to the resumption of the usual programme national and international events. The club’s main purpose is to meet and row in beautiful surroundings. Why not come and join us? If you are interested in joining or supporting Blakeney Rowing Club, or perhaps you wish to try a new sport, then phone club captain Humphrey on 07542 371469 for further information. Find out how you can become even more active whilst meeting an interesting range of like-minded people. All types of experience will be welcome. Join in and prepare yourselves for fun times on the water. Best wishes and stay safe. Barry Howes.

COVID-19 Litigation Risks

As the UK is now gradually easing out of lockdown and (hopefully) with the end of the Covid-19 pandemic in sight, it is inevitable that the Government will now turn its focus towards clawing back the funds expended in the course of its various Support Schemes.

As part of this year's budget in March 2021, the Government announced that it will be deploying £100m in the creation of a new Taxpayer Protection Taskforce to investigate individuals and businesses who wrongfully claimed under the Government Support Schemes. The taskforce will consist of approximately 1250 HMRC officials who will target those who have fraudulently claimed under the following schemes:

• Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (otherwise known as the Furlough Scheme); • Self Employed Income Support Scheme; • Bounce Back Loan Scheme; • Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme; • Coronavirus Large Business Interruption Loan Scheme; and • Eat Out to Help Out Scheme. As of March 2021, the taskforce had already made 10,000 enquiries into wrongful claims. The taskforce are choosing which claims to investigate based on payment data, PAYE records and tip-offs from members of the public.

It is anticipated that there will be more enquiries made by the taskforce.

disputes and litigation.

If an individual or business has been found to have wrongfully claimed taxpayer funds during the pandemic, they may be liable to civil and/or criminal penalties. HMRC's investigations are not solely limited to fraudulent claims, they are also investigating individuals and businesses who have mistakenly claimed funds when they were not entitled to do so under the scheme's criteria. In some instances, individuals may not even be aware of assistance their employers claimed, either inadvertently or fraudulently.
