The Holt Chronicle March 2021

A Note from the Editor

Things are looking up at last. At time of writing this, nearly 40% of the adult population have had their first vaccine, we have a plan for the easing of lockdown and the sun has started to shine, albeit intermittently. It feels like there is some light at the end of a very long tunnel. We can tentatively make plans for the months ahead and look forward to being able to meet family and friends again. It is still important to observe the rules, but this final push will hopefully mean the end of lockdown living (or existing). It must be a relief for businesses to be able to welcome us back soon, especially in North Norfolk where our local economy relies on leisure and hospitality so heavily. I suspect we will all have a newfound appreciation for the simple pleasures we took for granted before this pandemic. It is Mothering Sunday on 14th March, don’t forget that card and flowers. Clocks go forward on 28th March, an hour less sleep but lighter evenings will help dispel the winter blues. Then Easter is upon us, time for renewal and the promise of better things to come. Whatever you are doing to get into the spring vibe, enjoy your March magazine. Keep well and safe.

News from The Venue

We’ve all felt the strain of this last year in one way or another, and perhaps the hardest aspect for us at the Venue has been the inability to share our facilities with the community in the way that we usually do, knowing that there are vulnerable and isolated people in our town who need to connect. But it’s great news that at last the Government have a pathway out of this, and that hopefully we will be reopening our doors after the 12th April, welcoming back all the groups that usually make use of our community centre.

First and foremost, that’s what we are, a centre for the community to gather and enjoy activities and each other's company, a place for people to meet and connect and enhance their lives, whether that’s through social groups, special interest groups, cafes, exercise, or any of the myriad art activities that usually go on in the Venue. During the lockdown we have done much to improve the facility, from increasing our fire safety measures to updating the old lighting in the hall, to painting and decorating. At the moment, our treasurer is busy repainting the entire Citizens Advice suite of offices and meeting rooms, giving it a much-needed decorating update for when they reopen (we’re a multi-talented and multitasking bunch here!) We welcome a new business into the Venue in the front office, Helena Byrne, of Perle Counselling, offering Gestalt counselling, and of course Paula will be offering her fabulous massage therapy from April too, which I’m sure will be in high demand. Around mid-May, all being well with the Government Pathway, The Community Café will, of course, be offering its delicious 2 course hot meal every Thursday again, and huge thanks to them for helping the Venue to provide a Meals on Wheels service through the lockdown for up to 50 people a week, a service that was greatly needed and hugely appreciated by all who received it. Once the Café is open again, we will continue to offer a limited Meals on Wheels service to those in the community who are unable to come and are most isolated. It will be wonderful to welcome people back into the Venue again, but obviously we must still be careful and cautious, following all the guidelines and advice from the Government to ensure the safety of all, but at the moment, from our homes, we can at least plan and dream again of community mixing, enjoying each other's company in the summer, and a gradual return to normality. With that in mind, we will keep on improving and maintaining the Venue in preparation for the day when we can throw open the doors and welcome you all back!

County Councillor News

from County Councillor Sarah Butikofer sarah.butikofer.cllr@norfolk.gov.uk or 07968 897235 Firstly, my sincere apologies for the radio silence the last couple of months. When I last wrote for The Chronicle, I could not have imagined what the next three months would bring. Like many, I had plans for a restricted Christmas Day with hope for a brighter 2021. Sadly, my plans and I am sure those of many of you for Christmas were dashed. January with its promise of hope for the future did not live up to my and many others hopes and expectations. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who sent kind wishes and condolences, your support and care were humbling and truly appreciated. To those who have also faced illness and loss my thoughts and prayers are with you, too many have lost loved ones as a result of this pandemic. I think the majority of us are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Spring which we experienced a hint of last weekend. I sincerely hope that for everyone it signals the arrival of better times to come. So as usual some highways updates for you. It has been brought to my attention that although the link road to the industrial estate is now open, some heavy vehicles are still persisting in their use of the Hempstead Road approach. I am now working with the highways department to address this issue and see what more can be done. I am also working with the highways team to see what more can be done to address the concerns several of you have raised about parking in the area too. Speeding continues to be an issue in certain areas of the town and I will continue to work with the Town Council and highways to try and find solutions to address this. I am currently investigating potential funding sources for a permanent SAM2 that can be moved around the town, rather than sharing with your neighbours.

We had been told that the Inspector would inform us of the result of the Gladman Housing Appeal around Christmas, at the time of writing this has not been received and there is a further delay of around another two weeks. Finally, like so many of you I was hugely disappointed and frustrated (to put it politely), at the refusal of the County Council to reconsider its decision to dispose of Holt Hall. Working cross-party I worked with others to call a special meeting of the County Council, to discuss the future of the Hall and ask the members to think again about the importance of outdoor learning facilities. I still believe the Hall is an essential part of the outdoor educational offering of our area, and I will continue to work with all those involved to do everything we can to secure its educational potential for future generations. Huge thanks should go the Friends of Holt Hall who work tirelessly to do all they can to seek future opportunities for the Hall. Never has the importance of outdoor educational space been more important, not just in terms of the environmental challenges we face, but in the hugely important work to improve the mental health of our young people especially after a year of being confined. The battle may be over but the fight to SAVE HOLT HALL continues. Until next time, if before then I can be of further help or assistance please do not hesitate to contact me. Tomorrow and the months ahead must surely be kinder and brighter for all, I sincerely hope so.

Lost World

Les Kinsley’s recollections continued with extra help from Mr Stanley Vardigan aka ‘Squeaker’, recorded by Heather Bowes. I began school in 1929 at Melton Constable with the infants. I learnt to read and write. I still read the Eastern Daily Press every day. I found Maths difficult, so the teacher sat me next to my big sister Phyllis. She had a real head for figures and the teacher felt she might help me. It didn’t work but I must have picked up something, because no-one ever did me down when it came to doing a deal! Our secondary school was called Central School. It is now the Astley Primary. We started there at eleven years old and left when we were thirteen. I was full of mischief by then but I was good at practical subjects, so I was put to work making a model of a sailing ship. I made everything but the sails (the girls made those) I was so proud when my carpentry teacher Mr Rider put it on display at the school.

On the playground by the science room was a large metal tank with metal wheels. This held gas which was used as fuel in the school. We older boys were given the task of dragging this tank to the gas works at the top end of Melton Constable to have it refilled at the gas holder. We loved this job! The roads were quiet then and there were two good slopes. We took it in turns to sit on the tank whilst the unlucky ones pushed or guided. Coming down through Melton back to school was terrifying and exciting. The metal wheels made a tremendous noise as it gathered speed. We made sure we hopped off before the teachers spotted us. We would have got such a ‘birthday’ with the cane! Our headmaster Billy May taught Maths and Geometry. Bad behaviour was rewarded with less Geometry and more Maths. I remember him striding up to school each morning, trilby hat on and books tucked under his arm. Mr Parnell had his legs in irons. He lived in a caravan near Craymere Beck. Our P.E. teacher was called Billy Bush. He was small and bossy. None of us liked him. I remember one of my friends lost his temper and punched him. He knocked his teeth out!

ground and then roofed with branches and sacking which was pinched from a nearby field. The sacking had held fertilizer, so it was a bit whiffy.

In those days, Melton had gas lights. These were lit every evening by a man from the gas works. Our gang used to sneak behind him and switch off the lights he had just lit. Unfortunately for us, he told the local policeman who caught us doing it. The policeman carried a cane to keep us in order. We certainly got a ‘birthday’ that time! There was a small sewage works at the end of Burgh Beck Road with a sort of motorised arm to spin over the gravel circle. We took to riding on this arm. Unfortunately, we broke it. More trouble! Holly House down in Briston had a wonderful tree of sweet pears. We could not resist and made several raids. One day, just as we were reaching up to steal more the shed door opened, and the local policeman appeared. He had been waiting for us. We all got taken to the Headmaster and were punished with a stroke of the cane on each hand. ‘Would you like anymore?’ we were asked. We all declined.

To whom it may concern We now have a lovely well lit walkway connecting Hempstead Road to the new Lovel estate. What is sad to see is a few irresponsible dog owners, not only letting their dogs foul the pathway but also now throwing the filled dog poo bags over the fence onto private land at R H Matthews & Son. Please be aware cctv is operating on the private land.

My school friends all lived near and we got up to all sorts of mischief. We had nicknames. Mine was Kingcup as I had blond hair. There were Tabs, Buck and Squeaker. Squeaker and I are the only ones still alive now. He got his nickname because when we were at primary school, he was asked to take the part of a mouse in a play and had to make squeaking noises. We used to pool our pennies to buy sweets and cigarettes. (five Woodbines cost two old pennies). One trick was to make our own cigarettes with dried rolled leaves from the Tobacco plants in the garden. They tasted disgusting! We kept our money in an Oxo tin which we buried on the meadow. We built a den there too where we could sit and play cards in peace. It was a hole dug out of the

County Councillor News from County Councillor Dr Marie Strong Wells Division marie.strong@norfolk.gov.uk; 07920 286 597

Dear Readers, Apprenticeships: I am delighted to offer the following information – delighted because of the many young people who I know have benefitted from apprenticeships. Hopefully, many more will have the opportunity in the future so please read below and share with any young people or organisations who could participate. Details of Apprenticeships in Norfolk, including opportunities now open for applications, can be found on the Apprenticeships Norfolk website at https://apprenticeshipsnorfolk.org/ Opportunities for Employers: Employing an Apprentice does not only give apprentices an opportunity to learn new skills, but it is also a rewarding option for employers. Government incentives of up to £3,000 are available until 31st March 2021 and Apprenticeships Norfolk are offering additional £1,000 incentives for non-levy businesses in Norfolk to recruit a young apprentice. Further information is available at apprenticeshipsnorfolk.org/recruit-retain-reward. Elections: This time the elections are for County Councillors and the Police & Crime Commissioner. Also, where applicable, there are bi-elections for Town, Parish, District councillors (this is where a position has fallen vacant during the four year term of office). May 2021 local polls statement and delivery plan – On 8 February, the Minister for the Constitution, Rt Hon Chloe Smith MP, published a Written Ministerial Statement (https://questionsstatements.parliament.uk/written-statements/detail/ 2021-02-08/hcws773) in Parliament on the Government’s plans to proceed with the local elections on 6 May 2021 The Minister also announced the publication of a delivery plan (www.gov.uk/government/publications/may-2021-polls-deliveryplan/may-2021-polls-delivery-plan) for the May elections - addressing public health and social distancing, nominations and campaigning, voting, delivery of elections. An estimated £92 million of funding will be provided to councils for the elections to include £31 million to directly address costs associated with making the elections COVIDsecure.

VOTING in the May 2021 elections : Norwich North MP Chloe Smith, whose role as minister of state for the constitution and devolution includes elections, previously, told the House of Commons a "high bar" would need to be crossed for the government to delay the elections. It would now take an ‘extraordinary high bar’ but whether or not anything delays the elections best be prepared. So for the sake of your health and that of staff at the polling stations a postal vote seems a very good idea. Apply for a postal vote from NNDC – postalvotes@north-norfolk.gov.uk or 01263 513811 (press 5). Young People & Mental Health: Norfolk County Council’s ‘This is how… #wevegotthis’ campaign for young people’s mental health, promotes improving their mental health and wellbeing. For more details about the campaign go to: http://www.norfolk.gov.uk/feelgood Advice and Support for Bereaved Families: I was undecided as to whether to offer the following information but then recalled the times I would have found it helpful so here goes: To book a death registration appointment call Norfolk County Council Registration Offices on 0344 800 8020. Further information about this service can be found on this link: Deaths Norfolk County Council Further information about support including links to specialist organisations can be found here: Bereavement support - Norfolk County Council email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

COVID-19 Information: Keep these websites for future reference since they are kept up-to-date: Information on the national tiers is available at https://www.gov.uk/ guidance/local-restriction-tiers-what-you-need-to-know www.norfolk.gov.uk/coronavirus: this site includes local services as well as the latest regulations for Norfolk and reference to many if not all of the government schemes www.gov.uk/coronavirus: all the government schemes are to be found on this site www.nhs.uk/coronavirus; separate site if required but linked with the government site. Light Relief: You may have read of my hope to persuade spouse to keep the Christmas lights on past the deadline - we compromised. The lights in the front of the house were packed away but three of the ‘Christmas’ trees were moved to the conservatory and remain lit as year-round ‘ decorative lighting’. Again, I would like to express my admiration of those who continue to help others in so many ways and not only regarding Covid-19 but the weather. Many who help do so without anyone knowing about their good works – so thank you.

Employment Law: Furlough Leave Frequently Asked Questions The furlough scheme, also known as a the coronavirus job retention scheme, has been in place for almost a year since it began in March 2020 and with it has come a large amount of questions for employees placed on furlough leave. By December 2020, 9.9 million people had been furloughed with 1.2 million employers using the furlough scheme. The scheme has become bigger than ever anticipated for the UK and has helped saved millions of jobs throughout the pandemic. However, a scheme this size will inevitably have issues, some of which will be discussed below. This article will answer some common questions employees have on the furlough scheme. I was placed on furlough without my consent. Can an employer do that? Furlough leave is a variation of your employment contract. Usually, your employer cannot vary your employment contract without your consent. If they have done so, and you have objected to the change, this could be in breach of your employment contract. We would recommend in this circumstance you seek legal advice and take a copy of your employment contract with you.

My employer has furloughed me for my full working hours but is still expecting me to work. I have complied because I do not want

to lose my job. Legally, is this right? The simple answer is no. If you are furloughed for your full working hours then you should not be working for your employer in any capacity. You can volunteer or work elsewhere but working for your employer whilst they are claiming furlough payments from HMRC is likely to be fraud. I have been on furlough leave but my employer has just informed me I might be made redundant. Can they do this? The short answer is yes, this is possible. If there is a genuine redundancy situation, for example a business closure, then it may not be possible for your employer to keep you on furlough leave. If you are unsure and want further guidance, again we would recommend seeking legal advice.

I do not think I am being paid correctly under the furlough scheme. What can I do? In this situation, your first step would be to speak to your employer. If you cannot reach a suitable conclusion just by speaking to your employer, you should seek legal advice on the situation. You may be eligible to bring a claim for unpaid wages.

I am on maternity leave but want to be furloughed as this is better pay. Can I request this? Yes it is possible for this to happen. You would however need to give your employer 8 weeks'

notice of your early return to work so that they are then able to furlough you. As the scheme is due to end on 30 April 2021, there may be little benefit to requesting this at this stage, unless the scheme is extended (STOP PRESS - now extended to September).

My employer has requested I return to work but I do not think it is safe. What are my options? If you do not feel your workplace is safe, inform your employer immediately and do not go into the workplace. Your employer should try to work with you to resolve your concerns. If your employer tries to dismiss your concerns and discipline you for raising these concerns, you may be able to bring a claim against them in the Employment Tribunal. We always recommend you seek legal advice at the earliest opportunity when raising concerns in the workplace.

If you need further information or require legal advice on any of the points discussed above please contact our expert employment team today. Call 01263 823398, email enquiries@clapham-collinge.co.uk or visit www.clapham-collinge.co.uk. *This article is provided for general information purposes only and does not constitute legal advice or other professional advice.

Council Calls for Information Following Roadside Fly Tipping

“It is very disappointing to see people disposing of waste by littering and spoiling our countryside. Fly tipping is an illegal act for which NNDC will seek a conviction.

North Norfolk District Council is looking to hear from any potential witnesses or members of the public who have any information regarding a fly tipping incident reported at the start of February.

The incident, which involved over 30 tyres being dumped, occurred on the side of Wells Road, near Wells-Next-The-Sea and was reported to the Council on 1 February 2021. Anyone with any information relating to this offence should contact the Environmental Protection Team at NNDC on 01263 516085 or email ep@ north-norfolk.gov.uk Assistant Director for Environmental & Leisure Services, Emily Capps said:

We hope that anyone who has any information surrounding this incident will come forward and help us catch the person, or people responsible.”

Fly tipping is a criminal offence and is punishable by a fine of up to £50,000 or 12 months’ imprisonment if convicted by a Magistrates’ Court. If convicted in a Crown Court, the offence can carry an unlimited fine and up to 5 years’ imprisonment. You can report a fly tipping incident on our website.

Broccoli and Stilton Soup

Blue Cheese Facts

Blue cheese is cheese made with cultures of the mold Penicillium, giving it blue spots or veins. The veins are created during the production stage when cheese is ‘spiked’ with stainless steel rods to let oxygen circulate and encourage the growth of the mold. Blue cheese is believed to have been discovered by accident when cheeses were stored in natural temperatures and moisturecontrolled caves which happen to be favorable environments for many varieties of harmless mold. Stilton is a relatively new addition, becoming popular sometime in the early 1700s.

When the weather is cold and you need something substantial and comforting this soup really hits the spot. Easy to make, tasty and ideal for freezing it is certainly a favorite in our house. It can be served smooth or chunky and improves on keeping in the fridge for a day or two (if it is around that long!) Adjust the thickness of the soup by adding more or less potato. This will easily serve 4 people.

FROM THE REGISTERS

Dear friends, With the falling COVID-19 infection rates, the rise in the number of vaccinations, a possible way forward out of lockdown and the onset of spring, there is optimism in the air. At last, the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter and hope in the future is being restored. While we cannot afford to be complacent such optimism has been a long time coming and I for one look forward to a better year ahead of us. The past year has been incredibly difficult for people on all sorts of levels; physically, financially, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. In many ways it feels like a protracted Lenten fast, in which we have had to give up so much, yet Easter with its promise of new life is on the horizon. The events leading up to Easter which are recalled in the church’s liturgy of holy week speak to us of renewed hope as we face the future. The arrest, trial, torture and crucifixion and burial of Jesus had shattered any hope the disciples might have had for an uprising against Roman occupation and a return of the land to the nation of Israel. But the kingdom of God that Jesus had come to establish was like no earthly kingdom. Victory was to be won through the power of self-offering, self-giving, selfless love. The horrific events leading up to Jesus’ death would have no doubt weighed heavily on his disciples. They would have been spent, emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually. Yet all that was to change when, on the first Easter Day at first light, Mary Magdalene and certain other women went to the tomb. They found the stone of the tomb rolled away and they encounter the risen Jesus. Unable to contain their joy and excitement they rush to tell Peter and the other disciples what they had seen and as they say, the rest is history. It was an event that changed the world for ever. Death had been defeated, hope had been restored and the future was brighter than ever. We are all in need of an Easter Day in our lives, that sense of renewed hope and joy. Christians find it in the risen Christ, who fills our hearts with joy and peace. It does not mean we will be immune from experiencing dark days as we have done over this past year but knowing and believing that Christ has risen from the dead gives us strength to face each day and even death itself with a renewed hope that nothing can ever separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. The future is bright. May you and yours have a blessed and joyous Easter. Every blessing, Fr. Howard

Winter Safety in Holt

Stray Cats

Please note: The views expressed in this column are not necessarily the views of the editor or publishers of The Holt Chronicle but those of the author's submitting the material.

Dear Jo, Being a pedestrian in Holt is a tough enough ordeal at the best of times, what with the almost non-existent street lighting and actually non-existent pavement provision on parts of Bull Street, for example. However, in severe winter weather such as we have just experienced, things got much worse. There was a heavy fall of snow on Monday, by Saturday there had been hardly any clearance of what became compacted and very treacherous ice on the pavements of major streets such as the High Street, Fish Hill, Church Street, albert Street and White Lion Street. The roads themselves, a few of the at least, had been gritted. That makes sense, nobody wants cars to crash. It seems that the safety of motorists matters whilst that of pedestrians doesn’t, it is of no concern to our motorist, car owning councillors. They might argue that they are depleted of staff in these covid times. However, the virus didn’t exist a few years ago when we suffered ‘The Beast from the East’, and the council’s response to the icing of pavements was just as useless as it has been. The ‘Beast’ happened in March, so terrible wintry conditions could be back this month. Don’t brace yourself for a superb, efficient local government response to the shocking realization that sometimes it’s cold and snowy in winter. The fact is that Norfolk, like many other councils, love nothing better than doing things on the cheap. They’ve got away with endangering the safety of their fellow citizens for years in a characteristic obsession with saving money.

Dear Jo, C.A.T.S. (Catch and Treat Strays) would like to thank their friends at The Douglas and Joanne Chapman Animal Trust for their recent grant made to the charity. This grant has helped pay our veterinary bill during lockdown, for which we are very grateful. Doreen Smith.

If you are concerned about a stray cat in your locality you can contact C.A.T.S. (Charity # 1153666) for advice and information on 01328 878517.

Wells Community Hospital Trust News – Mar 2021

Local Norfolk based charities, Wells Community Hospital and Norfolk Clubhouse, join forces to tackle problems at the heart of Norfolk Communities. Wells Community Hospital based in Wells, North Norfolk and Norfolk Clubhouse; a charitable social enterprise based in Norwich with hubs in Norfolk are working together to support members of communities in Norfolk experiencing the effects of COVID-19 in diverse ways. Norfolk Clubhouse is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation which provides a lifetime Membership model of positive mental health support for adults 18 years and over, living with long term conditions to grow confidence and to access opportunities for education, training and employment in Norfolk, in partnership with local organisations and businesses. We also provide social connection and opportunities to grow strengths and abilities of people with mild to moderate mental and physical difficulties who don’t meet the criteria of other services and who feel socially isolated. Commenting on the campaign, June Webb, Founder of Norfolk Clubhouse said “we are joining with Wells Community Hospital Trust to support the potential growth in the resilience of our local communities, through providing long term support for our Members to develop their capabilities in partnership with community organisations and businesses, strengthening whole families and communities within Norfolk. Please contact June Webb on june@norfolk-clubhouse.org or 07935 072726 (messages only) – website norfolk-clubhouse.org for further information on becoming a Member or to refer someone. Update from hospital. During the coming months we are excited to be welcoming back our services to the hospital, as well as launching some new ones. With so many beautiful places to walk around Wells we are pleased to announce the launch of our walking group. Lead by Ryan, these will be running twice weekly from the hospital and are open to all abilities. Starting on the 29th of March, places are limited so please contact the hospital to book your place. Also please keep an eye on our social media and website for new activities, groups and classes to be announced, as well as events planned for the summer. All enquires can be made via email: admin@wellshospital.co.uk or by telephone on 01328 711996

From Stressed to Healthy A meta-study published by the American Heart Association on 25th January 2021 reinforced that poor mental health can very significantly damage your heart and take years off your life. The report evaluated 128 studies that examined psychological wellness and cardiovascular health. They found that chronic stress, anxiety, depression, anger and pessimism caused an increase in heartbeat irregularities, blood pressure, and inflammation. This was likely to result in conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, IBS, and weight-related issues. On the plus side, the research also reviewed how positive mental health affected physiological health. And sure enough, people with better mental well-being were less likely to experience stroke and cardiovascular disease. They were also likely to have lower blood pressure, less inflammation, and healthier cholesterol levels. This all points to a lower risk of mortality, and better health and quality of life. Not surprisingly, those who were more mentally healthy were also drawn towards better lifestyle choices, including healthy eating, regular exercise, healthy sleep habits, moderate alcohol use, and not smoking. The problem is, most of us know what we should be doing, but find it hard to actually do it. This has been more difficult over this last year due to the stress of the Covid pandemic. A very effective way to take more control of your own mind is to use hypnotherapy and self-hypnosis. You become calmer and more relaxed, feel more positive and motivated, and enjoy life more, so that it's much easier and more natural to do what you really want to do. Because this is an “inside out” process, it's much quicker and more successful than just talking, common sense, and will power alone. Keeping your pet away from danger

Rat poison is highly toxic, stops blood clotting and can be fatal. Pets can be successfully treated if treatment is started early. Usually, we will make the pet vomit to remove any remaining poison from the stomach and then start medication to help clotting function. Symptoms include pale gums, weakness and tiredness, inappetence, collapse, coughing and breathing difficulties, blood in the faeces, urine or vomit.

March marks Toll Barn Vets Pet Poison Prevention Month so it’s a great time to raise awareness of some commonly encountered household poisons. In the Larder! Chocolate contains Theobromine which can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, increased breathing rate, restlessness, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, inco-ordination and seizures. Signs usually occur 4-24 hours after ingestion. The darker the chocolate the higher the theobromine concentration. Grapes, raisins, sultanas and currents are all potentially able to cause kidney failure in dogs and cats. Signs include vomiting, diarrhoea, inappetence, salivation, weakness, lethargy and blood in the urine. Onions and garlic contain organosulphoxides which causes anaemia (low red blood cells) and other problems with blood cells. Japanese dog breeds and cats are even more susceptible to poisoning. Symptoms include pale gums, lethargy, increased breathing and heart rate, vomiting and inappetence. Xylitol is an extremely harmful artificial sweetener found in sugar free chewing gum and sweets. Ingestion causes a rapid and life threatening drop in blood glucose (sugar) level and liver damage. Signs include weakness, lethargy, collapse, vomiting, tremors and seizures, jaundice (yellowing of the gums and eyes), black faeces and coma.

Slug pellets contain metaldehyde which damages the nervous system causing muscle tremors, anxiety, drooling, panting, vomiting, seizures, increased body temperature and uncontrolled bleeding.

Mycotoxins are found in mould including food waste and compost heaps and are highly poisonous. Signs include muscle tremors, seizures, panting, hyperactivity, vomiting, weakness, and uncoordinated movements.

Time is critical with poison cases so if you have concerns about your pet please contact your vet as soon as possible. Our friendly team are on hand 24/7 to advise our clients on 01692 407126.

In the Garage! Antifreeze is very poisonous and attractive due to its sweet taste. Found in screen wash and brake fluid, just one teaspoon can kill a cat and cause kidney failure in a dog. 12 to 24 hours after ingestion the pet can start to look better, but this is usually followed by more extreme symptoms. Signs include drunk-like behaviour, incoordination, increased drinking and urination, drooling, vomiting, panting, sedation, coma and kidney failure.

Veterinary Nurse Vacancy

Claire Dye - Physiotherapy Update from Holt Holistic Centre

As a result of the Schools closing in January as part of the nation’s fight against the pandemic, I have been very busy home schooling my two young daughters. I am pleased to say that schools will re-open form the 8th March and I will therefore be returning to work at Holt Holistic Centre. I am very much looking forward to returning and putting to use my skills as a Physiotherapist instead of doing what I can only describe as ‘my best’ as a Primary School teacher! Physiotherapists spend a large amount of time dealing with the management of injured tissues, tendons, ligaments, fascia, joint and muscle. Each person who presents with a musculo-skeletal injury is unique, as is their injury. For example, two people suffering with a sprained ankle will present and be managed differently, their injury will also respond in a unique way to any given treatment. Mechanism, previous injuries, age of patient will all have influence on the overload of the tissue which manifests as the injury they present with to clinic. This requires the development of a bespoke treatment regime for each consultation, as the formation of ‘recipes’ for management of common injuries is flawed. Physiotherapists offer a unique skill in their ability to assess, diagnose and treat conditions. I take a holistic approach in the management of the injury itself and the person presenting with it. Physiotherapy can positively influence healing from the regeneration (DAY 5- 21) to the remodelling (DAY 21- 360) phases of healing. Experience, knowledge base and access to the current evidence base dictates the treatment plan which has the ability to alter depending on how the person and the tissues respond. If you feel could benefit from a Physiotherapy assessment, treatment and rehabilitation plan then please call contact me on 07919 621006 or email cdye.physio@gmail.com to book an appointment. I look forward to hearing from you. Claire Dye Chartered Physiotherapist BSc (Hons) HPC MCSP AACP

Plant Power!

Plant Based Pesto and Mushroom Tart

Method If you’ve prepped pesto and mushrooms ahead of time, this literally takes minutes to make. Take the pastry out of the fridge about 10 minutes before you need it to come up to room temp, unroll and leave on the greaseproof paper that it's rolled up in. Place on an oven proof tray and score about an inch in all around the outside, taking care not to cut all the way through. Spread a decent quantity of pesto on the tart, avoiding the outside inch that you have scored. Spread the mushrooms around evenly and dot the olives on the tart. Grate on a little cheese and place in a preheated oven on 200° for approx 15 mins or until the outside has puffed up and is starting to colour, and the middle of the tart is bubbling. Serve immediately with a huge seasonal salad. Use the pesto for pizzas or pasta, add to soups or stews or stir into hot new potatoes.

Ingredients For the Pesto (makes 1 batch): Bag of spinach Handful of fresh basil leaves Flat tsp dried oregano Half flat tsp garlic salt (or use 1 garlic clove) 3oz walnuts 3 oz sunflower seeds Juice of 1 fat lemon 3 fl ozs extra virgin olive oil Blend everything together except the olive oil in a blender, then add in the oil slowly to the desired consistency (should be nice and thick). Keep in an airtight container in the fridge. For the mushrooms: 1 large flat mushroom and a good handful of chestnut mushrooms, all sliced 1 tsp smoked paprika A tsp liquid smoke (optional, available in good health food stores or online) Pinch garlic salt Few drops of balsamic vinegar Pinch sugar Fry the mushrooms gently in a non-stick pan until they release their juices, then add in the rest of the ingredients and simmer gently until the juice reduces away, stirring occasionally. (scale up the ingredients to make a larger batch) To make up the Tart 1 pack of Jus Rol Gluten Free Vegan ready rolled Puff Pastry A handful of black olives A little vegan grated cheese if desired (I use Applewood Vegan as it melts well)

I am the absolute last person to want to restrict my diet to a faddy one just because I've seen something on the telly or in the papers, but in this season when our health is foremost in our minds and supporting your body through food has been thrown into stark relief, making good food choices has taken centre stage for me. Having contracted Covid in early November and struggled with Long Covid ever since with a variety of alarming symptoms including high blood pressure (something I have never suffered with) I became determined to try everything I could through nutrition to improve my health. Since mid-January, I have been completely plant based in my diet, not an easy task but an interesting journey of discovery, and one which in just 6 weeks, has seen my blood pressure return to completely normal, and enabled me to come off all other medication I was on. I’m not out of the woods yet on the pain front, but things are steadily, and measurably, returning to normal, which is massively encouraging, and something which I would encourage others to try. With this in mind, I’m going to share some of the tips and tricks I have picked up over this time, so that you don’t have to learn the hard way as I have! Today’s recipe is an absolute cracker, and so versatile. Pesto usually has Parmesan in it, but really does not need it (I know, I was sceptical too, but trust me, this tastes amazing). One of the huge benefits of being plant based are all the wonderful extra nutrients you get from all those beautiful plants, all supporting the health of your body. Opt for whole foods, not packaged factory based ‘vegan fare’ from the supermarket; think wholegrains, nuts, seeds, olive and coconut oils, herbs and spices, vegetables and fruit as your basic foods, and add in a few ‘treats’ in the form of ‘vegan’ cheeses, organic Tofu and Tempeh (use Tofoo brand, it’s the best) and 70% Cocoa chocolate and yummy dried fruits when you need a sweet hit. Preparation is key if you want to make life easy and are busy; batch cook beans or pulses and pasta or grains at the start of the week to throw in recipes quickly, have home-made veg soup for speedy lunches, make pesto, keep crunchy veg in the fridge to snack on, make hummus, roast a big batch of veg (peppers, red onions, sweet potatoes, butternut squash) to chuck in later. All will keep well in the fridge for up to a week. Even if you eat this way for the majority of the time, but occasionally have to tuck into your favourite meat foods, you will reap benefits. We can’t take control of a lot at the moment, but our food choices are ours to make, and for me, healthy choices have led to a much heathier and happier body.

Astley Primary School's Pastoral Support Team

Engaging parents through the new PST Twitter feed @pst_aps is a recent initiative which shares insight, articles and useful websites to build on the success and strong following of the Astley Primary School Twitter feed @astley_primary. Jen Goakes agrees that communication is key, 'I'm proud to offer such a fantastic resource. It is experience, knowledge, empathy and humanity that makes our Pastoral Support Team such a success.'

Pupils all over the country have resumed classroom face-to-face learning after the latest period of National Lockdown. The impact on children and parent's mental health has come into sharp focus, where families have been living, working and facilitating their children's education under one roof.

ACE ‘Astley Curriculum Experience' '...inspirational, challenging, inclusive and enabling children to become kind and respectful lifelong learners who have CHOICE.'

By phoning families regularly to listen and sign-post help throughout all lockdown periods, staff of Astley Primary School have compensated for the lack of face-to-face contact by forging strong relationships of trust and open communication to absorb the transition from home-learning to the dynamics of whole school life.

With thanks to The Pastoral Support Team and all staff at Astley Primary School, Briston ©Carrie Patten 2021

Astley's Pastoral Support Team (PST), run by Claire Riches and Claire Sutton and overseen by Miss Coleman (SEND Coordinator), share ideas, advice and practical tools with pupils and families to compliment Astley's whole team approach. Headteacher, Jen Goakes, explains how pastoral support is part of an historic school ethos is to focus on children's well-being.

Outstanding Companion-Based Care

Our aim is to make you look forward to our visit, be it a cup of tea and a natter, a shopping trip or a fantastic day out. We offer tailor-made companionship care packages to cover all your companionship and socialising needs. Our Happy Companions are fully trained, vetted and have many years Ensuring you feel socially engaged, maintain a great of experience working within the care sector. feeling of wellbeing and never lonely or isolated.

The PST acknowledge that pupils will have varying experiences of lockdown and deal differently with stress to adults, commonly presenting physical symptoms ranging from sleep issues to aggressive behaviour and verbal abuse. They anticipate separation anxiety, school phobia, frustration, sadness and grief and will address these feelings with care and kindness; listening and offering strategies to manage big emotions.

In addition to staff referrals, pupils are encouraged to 'self-nominate' via a box in the classroom if they wish to talk to a member of the team. By supporting children to feel happy, confident and emotionally secure they can focus on learning, progress and attainment. Astley's Governors acknowledge the vital work of the team and hope pupils become better equipped to reach their potential.

Sundown

When we reopened last summer, after what everyone thought was the end of a one-off enforced hibernation, rumours where everywhere about outdoor dining being the only way forward and even the only dining permissible. For this reason, we, at The Grove, invested in a pizza oven and started serving pizza on the lawns, within two weeks, we had to buy a second pizza oven to keep up with demand. The food was great, the wine was flowing and the company was… well that depended on who you chose to bring… But, even in the driest part of the country, it does rain and it can get chilly in the evenings, so we looked into ways of creating shelter. After further investigation and thanks to the help of the business resilience and recovery grant from Norfolk and Suffolk LEP, the idea of Sundown came about; a seasonal restaurant in giant tipis with a menu based around pizzas, Norfolk tapas and ice-cream. Meaning people can sit and watch the sun slip away while raising a glass and wishing good riddance to the past 12 months. We haven’t been standing still this winter and Sundown will be opening on May 17th, Boris willing, and will be welcoming residents and locals alike. For the more social media-minded you can follow us on Twitter or Instagram @thegrovesundown, for those who can’t be bothered with social media, pick up the phone 01263 512412 to book a table or go through our website.

North Norfolk Photographic Society

Some are born in India and return to see relatives. Others are travellers who go to see the Taj Mahal and other sights. More go there for work or service. A few go to India to take photographs – as did Liz Wallis and Paul Richards who left their North Norfolk home to spend a somewhat hot spell in the sub-continent. Liz and Paul (who are members of the Society) showed some of their pictures to North Norfolk Photographic Society via Zoom on February 3rd. The first image shown was not a photograph at all, but a map of India showing the places visited, which started at Delhi and went on to places such as Tadoba, Bharatpur and the Keoladeo National Park. Everyone expects tigers – and at Tadoba there they were! Being wildlife photographers, there were also lots of photographs of birds – and a few of the human residents as well! And a few landscapes. The presentation with images spread over 2 approximate one-hour sessions and all compliments to Liz and Paul for producing so much first-class work and incorporating it into a top class talk. Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month at the Holt Community Centre. New MRI goes live at Cromer and District Hospital

A state-of-the-art MRI machine has gone live at Cromer and District Hospital as part of a £8m imaging equipment replacement programme. A new Signa Artist was used for the first time on Monday 22 February after the hospital’s old MRI magnet was craned out of the building in November. The development at Cromer and District Hospital will lead to improved quality of imaging and an enhanced experience for patients in the local area. It is part of a £8m project to replace vital imaging equipment at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which will see the replacement of four MRI scanners and a CT scanner at the Trust. An additional CT scanner will also be added in the Radiology department at NNUH. Shelley Johnston, Deputy Lead MRI Radiographer, said Cromer’s old MRI was more than ten years old and around 20 patients a day will be scanned using the new machine. “It is a huge improvement in technology with more advanced imaging and offers a wider variety of examinations and diagnostic quality. It provides more space with a wide bore and an enhanced patient experience,” she said. The scheme follows ‘Aged Assets’ government funding that was announced in 2019, as well as benefiting from Adapt and Adopt Covid-19 funding. The project also continues at apace at NNUH with the arrival of a new CT scanner on Sunday 14 February and one of the old MRI was craned out of the building over the weekend.

The Holt Chronicle March 2021

Hello, my name is Sarah Bütikofer, and I am standing for re-election as your County Councillor for Holt Division, at the elections on the 6th of May. I care passionately about our local communities, and the issues that matter to every one of us, which is why sitting on the sidelines wasn’t an option for me. As a consequence, I have spent the last twelve years working in local politics, the last six of which have been as an elected representative. Working in partnership to solve problems is central to my approach and this is reflected in the work I have been doing as your Leader on North Norfolk District Council. Delivering new employment opportunities across the District, providing local housing for those in crisis, whilst at the same time driving forwards on our ambitious green agenda. But most importantly working with all our communities to address the issues that are important to them. But there is so much more that needs to be done and most importantly can be done at the County Council level to improve – Social Care, Education, The Environmental Programme, Essential Services (such as recycling centres) and Highways. I’m standing in this May’s election because we need to address these issues now to deliver a brighter future for all. We need a new plan for the County Council which is why I am proud to be standing with a team that can deliver. I want to continue with my work to be a passionate and committed voice for Holt. Most importantly I believe we need to do politics differently more collaboratively, and ensure it reflects the strong community spirit seen each and every day here. But I can’t do it without you. Together, we can secure real change for Holt and the rest of Norfolk this May and build a better kind of politics at the County Council. Of course as always if I can be of help and assistance between now and the elections in May, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Many thanks,

Sarah Bütikofer

Splash to Make Way for the New Leisure Centre in Sheringham

North Norfolk District Council is seeking to take advantage of the current closure of the Splash Leisure Centre in Sheringham to bring forward the completion of its replacement. The uncertainty surrounding the date of the reopening of leisure centres in England, and the inevitable timescale before they can operate at full capacity, has led North Norfolk District Council to conclude that this hiatus should be used to speed up the completion of the new Sheringham Leisure Centre by demolishing the Splash earlier than had originally been intended. Excellent progress has been made on the new development, despite the many interruptions of the past year. The new building is scheduled for completion in August this year; however, the demolition of the Splash had not originally been scheduled until after the new centre had opened, in order to provide continuity for users. This would have meant that the car park and landscaping would not have been completed until the end of November 2021. By reprogramming the works, so that the demolition can take place in parallel with the completion of the new building, Construction company Metnor can save several months on the current plan. Given that it is unlikely that the Splash would be in use (certainly not to capacity) for much of that time, Everyone Active, which operates the centre for North Norfolk District Council, is wholly supportive of this approach. The Council has therefore decided to fast-track the completion of the new leisure centre, so that the whole site, including the car park, will be open to local people and visitors this summer. Everyone Active has done an excellent job of maintaining the operation of the Splash pool, fitness suite and exercise studios, when they have been allowed to open since July 2020, but with the restrictions of social distancing, enhanced cleansing and the interruptions of intermittent lockdowns, that has been increasingly challenging. The costs and the resources needed to remobilise the facility after the current lockdown (whenever that is) are not justified for the short period for which it is

Could You be a Hound Hero?

Like many charities, Norfolk Greyhound Rescue (NGR) have been under pressure during the pandemic. Unable to hold fundraising events has inevitably resulted in a severe reduction in income, but the number of hounds needing help does not stop. NGR is a non-profit organization who aim to rehome Irish greyhounds, ex-racers and those who never made the cut for racing, and now face an uncertain future or sometimes, tragically, an untimely end. NGR offer hope to these poor hounds and work hard to find them caring homes. And this is where you could come in. Are you able to offer a foster home or forever home to one (or more) of these lovely dogs? Somewhere safe and warm with lots of love, regular food and a kind hand. Despite their reputation as canine athletes, these dogs don’t need much exercise and make wonderful calm and gentle pets. As a foster carer you would receive all expenses for caring for a dog, covering vet’s fees, food and equipment. This arrangement may suit someone who cannot afford the cost of owning a dog or someone who cannot commit to long term ownership but has a suitable home and a willingness to help out until a forever home is found. If you are able to offer a foster placement for a dog or are interested in offering a forever home, please contact NGR via their website at norfolkgreyhoundrescue.co.uk. There you can find more information about NGR and how to become a hound foster carer or adopt one of these wonderful dogs. Alternatively, if you are unable to offer a home but would still like to help, donations are always welcome and can be tmade on the website and once lockdown is eased, why not hold a fundraising event or volunteer to help at an event?

likely to be open and the reduced capacity it will inevitably have. The building’s running costs alone for the four-month period (were it to operate from April to July) would amount to some £51,000 and the costs of remobilising the building equate to around £6,500. The new Sheringham Leisure Centre will have a 6-lane, 25m main pool, a 13m x 8m learner pool with moveable floor, a splash pad with water play features and two community rooms for flexible use. There will be a café area on the ground floor with spectator viewing into the pool. Upstairs there will be a fifty-station health & fitness suite, a dance/ activities studio covering 200sqm, a spinning studio 96sqm all of which will enable twice as many people to participate in sport and exercise than can currently at the Splash. The building has been designed to Sport England’s accessibility standards to ensure as many people as possible can access the wide mix of facilities. The new leisure centre has been designed to be highly energy efficient, with state-of-the-art windows and doors to prevent heat loss and high-performance insulation for hot water pipework, as well as ‘presence/absence detection’ lights for areas with limited use. It incorporates renewable energy systems such as solar thermal collectors for water heating and air source heat pumps. The name and logo for the new Leisure Centre will be revealed in the coming months as the building nears completion. Anyone interested in tracking the progress on site can view the time lapse video hosted on the Council’s website.

Wells RNLI called out to group stranded on the saltmarsh by the spring tide

- If you fall into the water unexpectedly, FLOAT TO LIVE. Fight your instinct to thrash around, lean back, extend your arms and legs, and Float - In an emergency dial 999, and ask for the Coastguard Further RNLI information concerning the importance of weather and tide conditions can be found here : https://rnli.org/safety/know-the-risks/tides

At 4.31pm today, Saturday 27 February 2021, in what was the first call out this year, the RNLI Wells Inshore Lifeboat D Class was tasked by H.M Coastguard to a report of individuals in the water at the East Quay, Wells-next-the-Sea. The local group of one adult, three children and a dog had been cut off by the tide and were attempting to cross the water from the saltmarsh where they were stranded as the end of daylight was approaching. The coastguard paged for an immediate launch of the Wells Inshore Lifeboat ‘Peter Wilcox’. The lifeboat, with a crew of three, launched immediately and were on the scene within 18 minutes. On their arrival they found the group of individuals tired and wet and waiting for rescue on the marsh. The group had called 999 and asked for the coastguard as they had attempted to cross the creek, but the Spring tide was flooding in fast and they had to abort the attempt and return to the marshes.

New Podiatry Clinic for Holt – The Footclinic

As a podiatrist I have been working throughout lockdown following strict covid rules with regard to PPE and cleaning; carrying out my duties with Norwich City Football Club as their podiatrist and conducting home visits to patients in the Holt area alongside working from my clinics in Fakenham and Wroxham Medical Practices. Now that things are resolving across the UK and my two children are settled back into school locally, I have decided to open up a clinic in Holt.

The adult, three children and the dog were helped on board the lifeboat and dropped off at the safety of the shore at Cox’s slipway where the local coastguard team and Police were in attendance and waiting to see if they required any further help. The individuals were wet, cold and very muddy but otherwise uninjured and did not require medical assistance.

As a podiatrist I can help with corns, callus, toe nail cutting, thickened nails, in growing toenail surgery, verrucae, diabetic foot care and Orthotics.

The Lifeboat Operations Manager, Chris Hardy, said “it is important for anyone wanting to enjoy a walk through the creeks and on the marsh to always check the tide times before venturing out; however, we are pleased that this rescue had a successful outcome.”

My upstairs room is a designated biomechanical clinic where I can assess and focus on the lower limbs, examining their range and quality of motion in the joints and muscles. Lower back pain, knee and foot pain may be linked to poor foot function. I make custom made insoles to help these issues along with specialist insoles for all sport including walking, golf, cycling and running.

With all safely ashore, the Inshore Lifeboat was released at 5pm and returned to the station at 5.19pm. The Inshore Lifeboat was sanitised, rehoused and refuelled at 5.45pm RNLI advice on beachgoers and water users is:

I will be opening in late March at 3 Chapel Yard and can take bookings on 07809 441486 or please email me at thefootclinic@live.co.uk to discuss your foot problems.

- Have a plan - check the weather forecast, tide times and read local hazard signage - Keep a close eye on your family – on the beach and in the water - Don’t allow your family to swim alone - Don’t use inflatables

Know your Onions - March 2021

What do you know about the humble onion? A vegetable that we encounter every day, a vegetable that brings us flavour and enhances the blandest dish! Where did it come from? It was first found in Asia and was one of the first used by the Egyptians more than 3,500 years ago. It has been found in early China, Rome and across the Atlantic with the native American Indians. It is thought to have been brought to our shores by the Roman occupation. From one plant comes several different cultivars under the family term of Allium: -Shallots, garlic, leeks, chives, spring onions and welsh onions to name some. Now is the time to start sowing or planting onions for a crop to be harvested in the late summer - early autumn. Onions can be grown from seed and the seed needs to be sown in a large tray or small modules and then pricked out into larger pots or modules, ready for planting out. A different way of growing onions is to purchase what are known as onion sets, these have been grown last year and are very small bulbs ready to be planted out. Most onions prefer an open, sunny site but will tolerate some shade. They need a cultivated soil that has been manured for a previous crop. Make sure the soil is firm and friable (raked down to a fine tilth). Plant the onions out with 6”or 15 cm between plants and 12” or 30 cm between rows. In my photograph is shown a way of growing more onions in a reduced plot by starting five plants in a pot and then planting them out like that, you will get smaller bulbs, however many people like that smaller size. As the onions grow, be careful to hand weed between plants as they are shallow rooting, apply a nitrogen rich fertiliser or wood ash to the onions which will encourage bulking out of the bulb. Once the tops start to fall over, turn them away from the sun, so this allows the sun to ripen the bulb and just run your finger around the outside and take away any soil. Dig up the bulbs when dry and then lay out in a dry airy place to dry

further. Once they are dry, clean the outside skins and hang up in a dry, cool, frost free place. Onions are easy to grow, however they do suffer from drought and you must not let the onion bed dry out as this can cause bolting. This means they go straight to seed as they are under stress. Onions do suffer from onion fly, downy mildew and onion white rot. The latter can be very difficult, as it causes the bulb to rot from the bottom. It can last in the soil for a considerable number of years and will infect other onions crops if planted in the same place. Chris Wright

Essential Tremor Awareness Month March is Essential Tremor Awareness Month.

Essential Tremor is a progressive neurological disorder. About 1 million people in the U.K are thought to have Essential Tremor, of whom 5% are children. It can affect persons of any age, gender and race. The vast majority of cases are inherited. The tremor can affect the head, arms, legs and hands. Speech is also frequently impaired making communication difficult. Trembling head or hands mean that tasks as simple as drinking a cup of tea, writing or using a computer become difficult. When legs are subjected to tremors, most patients can only stand for short periods, and must walk with aids. It is a debilitating condition which can interfere with work related tasks and activities of everyday living, in some cases causing embarrassment and withdrawal. If you need help it is important to seek a medical diagnosis from a neurologist or doctor with a special interest. The National Tremor Foundation has an excellent website providing information, coping advice and support groups, During the month of March they are holding on line seminars and meetings where professors and other specialists in the field will be speaking. Go to tremor.org.uk for further information. Sue Layfield

Taking the worry out of buying heating oil If you rely on heating oil for your home or business you’ll know that the price can change depending on when and how much you order. Heating oil is unregulated so, unlike gas and electricity, there are no pricing controls. Community Action Norfolk (CAN) runs a collective oil buying scheme called ThinkingFuel, which offers reliably low prices on heating oil by buying in bulk on behalf of all its members around the county. CAN is a charity and buying from ThinkingFuel helps us support local community projects across Norfolk. Comparing prices for oil is difficult for the consumer because of fluctuations between quantities, locations and delivery times. With ThinkingFuel there’s no favouritism whether you buy 500 litres or 5,000 - all our members pay the same low price per litre however much they order. There’s no obligation to buy, and we offer payment plans to help spread the cost. At ThinkingFuel we offer two key dates each month when you can order oil to maximise savings – but you can order oil from us on any other working day and still get a competitive price. The scheme is trusted, reliable, and well established across Norfolk. Find out how it works and join us at www.thinkingfuel.org.uk If you don’t have internet access you could ask a friend to go through the information with you. Or call us on 01362 698216 and we’ll answer your questions.

ThinkingFuel is Community Action Norfolk’s collective oil buying scheme Members save an average £120 a year on their oil bills. It’s FREE to join and there is no obligation to buy. For more information and to register call 07362 698216 or email thinkingfuel.org.uk

There has been enormous progress in regenerative medical treatments and these are commonplace for facial and body rejuvenation. Did you know several of these treatments can be applied to intimate areas also? These treatments have become very popular during recent years and we have several studies and satisfied patients that attest to a success story. Modern lifestyle, diet, alcohol, environmental pollution etc. affect our general and hormonal health also.

Councillors voted after a debate to approve the proposed budget, which includes a freeze on NNDC’s Council Tax precept residents will be asked to pay and a commitment not to reduce any key services.

Parking charges in Council-run car parks will not increase and the budget agreed will also see the Council inject £550,000 into its reserves, to help ensure key NNDC projects are delivered effectively during the financial year. These include: - New leisure centre to open in Sheringham in August and within budget - Roll-out of a £1.4m programme to support more affordable homes - Tree planting scheme to plant 110,000 trees in North Norfolk by 2023 under Council’s Green agenda to continue, supported by a £300,000 budget and with two dedicated environment officers appointed

North Norfolk Needs You!

housing tenure and transport and inform policy development and funding for public services in years to come - so please complete the form and make sure North Norfolk’s voice is heard in this national census.” Paul Walmsley, Census Engagement Manager, added: “the level of advice and support given to me from both the Council and local community groups has been exceptional, I and the ONS team are determined to achieve the best possible Census for all in North Norfolk”. Households will begin receiving letters with online codes in March explaining how they can complete their online census. People can also request a paper questionnaire if they’d prefer to complete the census that way. In areas where lower online completion is expected, around 10% of households will receive a traditional paper form through the post. There is plenty of help available, with people also able to complete the census over the phone with assistance from trained staff via the ONS’ free phone contact centre. The ONS also aims to provide in-person support to complete the census online through Census Support Centres where it is safe to do so. The main census field operation will begin only after Census Day, contacting those who have not responded. Field staff will never need to enter people’s houses; they will always be socially distanced, wear PPE and work in line with all government guidance. They will be operating in the same way as a postal or food delivery visit. Census 2021 will include questions about your sex, age, work, health, education, household size and ethnicity. And, for the first time, there will be a question asking people whether they have served in the armed forces, as well as voluntary questions for those aged 16 and over on sexual orientation and gender identity. Results will be available in 12 months, although personal records will be locked away for 100 years, kept safe for future generations. For more information and advice on how to answer the questions, visit census.gov.uk

The Office for National Statistics – which runs Census 2021 – is working with North Norfolk District Council to deliver a successful census and help local services to fully meet future needs. Understanding the needs of the nation helps everyone from central government to local organisations, such as councils and health authorities, plan and fund public services across England and Wales. Census outputs inform where public funding is spent on services like transport, education and health – on cycle routes, schools and dental surgeries. The census, taking place on 21 March 2021, will shed light on the needs of different groups and communities, and the inequalities people are experiencing, ensuring the big decisions facing the country following the Coronavirus pandemic and EU exit are based on the best information possible. Steve Blatch, Chief Executive at North Norfolk District Council, commented: “North Norfolk District Council would encourage all of our residents and property owners to complete the Census form, either in hard copy or online formats, when asked to by the Census 2021 team as the information provided is so important in understanding the changing structure and needs of our community over time and ensuring that we secure the appropriate level of funding to provide public services in the future. "North Norfolk is a fantastic place to live and work, but often the needs of our communities are overlooked as policy makers at a national level have a “tourist's-eye” perspective of the District - and don’t appreciate the high costs of living in rural communities, the true make-up of our local economy and the challenges of an older population accessing acute health services in locations beyond the District which are difficult to access by public transport. "Information provided through the Census will allow for a deeper understanding of the communities and life experiences of people across North Norfolk in terms of health, education, employment, income,

phrase in our vocabulary. Each of our members found the introduction of this new technology challenging in their own way. If we had been able to ask one of our founding members in the 1957 picture if they could have imagined meeting others through a piece of equipment which we would one day call a PC, laptop, iPad or tablet, they would surely have scoffed in disbelief.

Just over a year on since we first heard the phrase Covid-19 and our world turned upside down.

Our current members took this challenge in their stride and each have been on their own journey of discovery through the power of technology. Our oldest members in their 90’s appear to relish this challenge, not only to keep in contact with each other but to continue the work of supporting those in need.

From its inception in 1957, a Rotary Club has been meeting in Holt. Our members are part of a global network of individuals who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change for the improvement of others through our charitable fund-raising activities. Until March 2020, we met in person but as the virus spread and made its way to the UK, we had to find new ways of keeping in touch with each other.

Throughout this pandemic we’ve found our desire to help others hasn’t diminished, in many ways has increased. We have cast aside the limitations we put up on ourselves to find new ways to meet and continue our work.

Many may think of us as a group of men of mature years to say the least. Let me dispel the first myth; we are a group of men and women ranging in age from 50’s upwards. Finding ourselves unable to meet in person, we embraced like many (some more than others) new forms of technology.

We are not only about supporting needy causes we also know, how to have fun. We would love to hear from you, so drop us a message, even if it’s just to say “Hi”! Holt.Rotary.Secretary@Gmail.com

The pier will not be open for fishing, crabbing or any other activities until further notice, pending any future changes to the national guidelines.

CHESS PROBLEMS by Dr Cedric Lytton 287. Comins Mansfield. 4th Prize, Friends of Chess Composing Tourney, 1961

288. Touw Hian Bwee. 1st Prize, Friends of Chess Composing Tourney, 1961

287. Mate in two moves

288. Mate in two moves

Solution to No. 287: 1. Rb7, threat 2. Re7, threat 2. Re7 1… Kxd5 2. Rc7; 1… Kxe3 2. f5; 1… f6 2. Qe6; 1… f5, Bf5 2. Qf3. Spectacular key-move, granting the black K two flights, each met by further battery-openings with 2. f5 also opening an indirect battery line to d4 and e4 for the white Q. A mini-duel between the Q and the black Pf7 add to the feast.

No. 288 is the first-prizewinner from the same Composing Tourney, and also shows brilliant play with no less plan 6 defences by the black Q, including the cross-check 1… Qb8+ 2. Rf8 set on the diagram. Even though something must be done about the defence 1… c4 which would give the black K a 4th flight, the key is excellent and the composer did well to secure it. Difficulty 4. Solutions to me at 16 Lime Grove, Sheringham NR26 8NX, or e-mail to lestershaw7@gmail.com.

And would readers let me know if they would like to see the 2nd and 3rd prizewinners as well? email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

Taboo?

well or badly, it’s your choice. Please choose the right executors: they should be people you trust and whom you can rely upon to do the job, and to do it well. They should get on, but need not be close. Best ask them too, so it doesn’t come as a surprise from which they recoil, leaving no one to do the job.

Director, Hayes + Storr

By Miranda Marshall, It is oft said that the Victorians were obsessed with death, but would not talk about sex, and that, in contrast, the western world of the 21st Century is obsessed with sex but will not talk about death. The pandemic is changing that, somewhat.

Your funeral, sadly currently a shadow of pre-Covid, too needs careful thought. The Victorians would have been mortified at the utilitarian process of the last year; certainly, no paid mourners, as in Oliver Twist. Think about whether you want cremation or burial. The former requires two doctors to certify your death as there are no remains to be dug up later (maybe, I have watched too much ‘Silent Witness’ and other police dramas?). Organ donation rules have changed and there is now an opt-out (rather than an opt-in) system. Transplant surgeons want healthy young organs, so those of octogenarians are generally surplus to requirement.

The euphemisms of death are often hilarious. When I first started out as a private client lawyer, people would talk about ‘losing your mother’ which made me think of the ‘departed’ (there we go again!) rather like a toddler who had wandered off. In his book of the same name, Evelyn Waugh in the 1940s made fun of the term ‘The Loved One’, which has now entered mainstream language, even to the extent of being uttered without a hint of irony by Boris Johnson. In our modern fluid and blended society, the term is useful, rather like actors who call everyone ‘darling’ because they can’t remember names. In 2011 the first ‘Death Café’ was held in the UK to provide an opportunity for people to ‘gather to eat cake, drink tea and talk about death’ in a positive way and now there are 10,000 such ‘cafés’ around the world, including online. A bit of a niche for most, probably. Making the right plans now to manage ‘the inevitable’ gives peace of mind and setting out your wishes makes it easier ‘for those ‘left behind’ ‘when the time comes’.

Prepaid funeral plans mean that no one can skimp on your funeral and pocket the funds after your death. There are usually extras and someone makes money out of selling them but they have their appeal. Make sure you go to a reputable independent undertaker to get yours! Digital assets can easily be overlooked. Keeping paper records is considered safer, generally, than electronic data; so, hand a sheet with the information including passwords, to your solicitor to be stored with your Will. Regular updating is important. If it could be a problem, rather than ignore the risk of a claim against your estate, grasp the nettle and discuss it with your solicitor. Careful noting of your thinking and background are all useful defensive ammunition, should a dispute arise. Making a Will with a good and specialist solicitor is eternally fundamental, but especially where there is an inheritance dispute waiting in the wings.

Unsurprisingly, in 2020-1 there has been a big increase in Will-making. Ancient Romans considered the success of their life to be measured by the respect and love with which they were remembered posthumously and put much effort into preparation. It was an anathema for them to die without a Will, for that very reason.

And remember, in the meantime, enjoy your time on earth!

Why therefore do some people take the line that ‘They can fight over it all when I’m gone, because I won’t be here to see it!’?
