A Note from the editor

It really feels like winter is upon us with the dark evenings and rediscovering our woolly jumpers, hats, and scarves. Thoughts turn to pumpkins and bonfires, but things will be very low key this year. With many public Guy Fawkes events not taking place there may be more domestic fireworks around this year and a greater need for being mindful of the safety our children and pets. Remember to stick to the firework code and keep your pets somewhere quiet and safe. As we are going to press the government has just announced a national lockdown, and Covid cases are rising in this area. Track and Trace may not be perfect but if you receive an alert please follow advice on isolating. If we are to come through this pandemic it is vital we follow the rules to protect our vulnerable and keep our local economy going. New lockdown rules mean that arrangements for seasonal events, church attendance and many other things have changed, please ensure you check how this affects your plans. With Christmas around the corner shopping for gifts is well underway. This is another way we can all support our local businesses, many offer home deliveries and all depend on the seasonal spend, so shop locally where you can. Enjoy your November magazine. Keep well and safe. Jo – Editor

Please e mail holttowncouncil@gmail.com or phone 07385 579068 for an application form. Application forms can be returned by e mail or posted to Nelson House, 2, White Lion Street, NR25 6BA by Friday 4th December 2020. Fakenham Parish Church Virtual Christmas Tree Festival (CTF) 2020

Fakenham Parish Church’s Christmas Tree Festival has been an extremely popular, extraordinarily successful and much-loved event for 20 years. Like so many others, it will not be happening this year. However, the organising team is a group of creative optimists and has been determined that the 8 festival days between November 26th and December 3rd should offer something to our many supporters. We are therefore happy to announce ‘Virtual CTF 2020’. There will be a dedicated festival website – christmastreefestival.org and on each of the 8 days a new video will be released. Each day will feature a few of the charities who would have taken part. There will be interviews with charity representatives, examples of the many creative tree decorations and lots of photos from previous years. There will be an art competition and opportunity to make donations online rather than bringing the bags of coins you have been saving since last year. Please keep those for 2021! The festival service from the parish church on November 29th will be live streamed. We are also pleased to announce ‘Fakenham – Christmas Tree Town’. Many shops and other businesses have agreed to have Christmas tree themed displays in windows and elsewhere. A number of these will have collecting buckets for the charities, so you could bring those bags of coins and a clue to the Town Trail competition which will also be running. The town’s Christmas Lights switch-on will be on the first day of the festival. Please look out for further information, wherever you are reading this as our plans progress and develop. County Councillor News

from County Councillor Sarah Butikofer sarah.butikofer.cllr@norfolk.gov.uk or 07968 897235

Since writing last time I am sure you will have heard the news that Norfolk County Council have now formerly proposed the closure of Holt Hall. I am absolutely staggered they have made a decision with such widespread implications without properly consulting not only with local schools and local community groups, but without properly engaging with all your locally democratically elected representatives. They tell us they consulted with schools across Norfolk for ONLY eleven days, hardly a proper consultation period! At a time when frankly I am sure most teachers are concentrating on delivering the very best education they can to our young people, in some of the most difficult circumstances teachers have ever faced. Reading the report just serves to reinforce what most of us already knew, that Holt Hall is an exemplary facility achieving some of the highest customer service levels in the business. The Friends of Holt Hall have launched an online petition to try and change the minds of those in control at the County Council, if you haven’t already signed please put Holt Hall Petition into the search bar of your computer and the petition will pop up for you to sign. In a week the team have collected over 2000 signatures and the number are growing daily, if we get to 4,500 we can demand a debate at the County Council. On a more positive note, I am pleased work is now underway to start addressing some of the highways issues around the Hempstead Road, and that the new road to the industrial estate is finally open. I spoke this afternoon with the highways engineer again, as some residents have contacted me regarding concerns about traffic speeds on The Cromer Road and The Kelling Road, he has agreed that with the agreement of the Town Council we can deploy a SAM 2 traffic camera to the area. I will be raising the issue with your town council at their next meeting. Several residents have also raised issues about cars parked on residential roads around the town again, we have asked for more enforcement around double yellow lines as some people are parking making it very difficult for residents to exit their properties safely. Please be aware.

As I mentioned last time we are now responding to the government’s recent planning White Paper, and those of you who are interested can go onto the District Council’s website to see our response. Just two concerns that will be of interest to most readers, are the proposed changes to responding to planning applications online and the guidance on affordable housing. We are very concerned to ensure that any changes to the current consultation system should increase resident’s opportunities to comment on applications in their area, not decrease them. I will very much miss the opportunity to pay my respects at the Holt War Memorial this year due to the Covid restrictions, but this does not mean the fallen of the town will be forgotten in my heart as we mark the national day of remembrance at the District Council offices – We will always remember them. For now I would like to end with a final thanks to everyone for the part they continue to play in helping to keep us as safe as possible. I have just left a very sobering call that tells us cases are rising across Norfolk please remain vigilant, take care and be considerate of the concerns of others as we move forwards, sadly this virus is still with us. As always if you would like further information on any of these issues or would like to get involved in a campaign to Save Holt Hall please do get in touch. Until the next time.

News from The Venue

This month sees the Holt Community Centre Association Charity launch its crowdfunding appeal, The Friends of the Venue, a scheme designed to help us to ensure that the town does not lose its Community Centre. Standing with us to help launch the Appeal are Holt and District Rotary who offered the following support:

“Holt and District Rotary was heavily involved in the building of the Community Centre and has supported activities held there since. The Venue has now a vital role to play in providing a base for community run groups and Holt Rotary is delighted to offer its full support to this appeal in these testing times.” Also pledging their support are the Love Holt group, with Iain Wilson stating “Towns like Holt are not special without places like The Venue and those who help to run it day to day. The current COVID situation puts community focused organisations at risk and its essential we all do what we can to support. The new Friends of the Venue appeal has the full support of Love Holt – its brilliant, affordable and every penny will be spent on those in the community who need it most” and Duncan Baker MP for North Norfolk who has been a staunch supporter of The Venue took time out of his hugely busy schedule to send us this encouragement “I have worked with Carolyn Burn on a number of projects over the years and there are few with her energy and enthusiasm for supporting the community. What she and her team have done with the Community Cafe has been nothing short of an enormous success, tackling isolation and loneliness. I fully support her Friends of the Venue appeal. Community Centres, especially at the moment with reduced bookings are not easy to financially maintain but I know Carolyn will make this a success and preserve the centre for the whole community to enjoy.” It has been a really hard season for us this year, having to close the doors for 6 months due to Covid, and being unable to do any effective fundraising to help to underpin the costs of running the Centre. With average annual running costs of around £40,000, the £10,000 Government grant th went so far, but not quite far enough to ensure that we 7PM FOR 7.30PM START keep going. The Centre was built 45 years ago and funded in part by the collective

It’s clear to us that in this season, when we are all struggling with stress, uncertainty, isolation and financial hardship, that resources such as the Venue can provide a real lifeline for many, and that it is vital that we keep it open, so that the community has the chance to reconnect and support each other. As home to the Citizens Advice, Holt Community Café, The 1960’s Club, 2 AA Groups, Slimming World, Amplifon Hearing Tests and many exercise groups whose members benefit from vital social interaction, it is clear that the Venue is more than just a place to hire, it is an essential resource for the town that would be sorely missed if it were to close its doors. We have new groups starting up every month, but these are uncertain times, and we cannot afford to trust the future to chance. Hence our new Appeal, in which we are once again asking the residents of Holt and the surrounding district, to support the ongoing work at the Venue and pay small regular amounts into a fund designed specifically to pay for the ongoing running costs of the Centre.

Having this financial security enables us to ensure that the groups that are meeting specific social needs within our community are still able to meet at the Venue and continue their vital work. It also helps us to develop new services in these uncertain times, that can further support social action within the town. To this end, we are already working alongside The Treehouse to help to provide free meals to children in the town whose families are experiencing hardship, and we continue to provide the Holt Community Café free meals on a Thursday to around 50 people every week. So, we are appealing to the people of Holt to please join with us and donate just £2 a week into the Friends of the Venue fund. We already have the equivalent of 70 people paying in, but we are aiming for 400. This would give us a fund of £41,000 per year if it reaches its potential, which is the annual running costs, and would provide the Charity with the security to ensure its survival for the future. More details including how to give are available on our website www.thevenueholt.com. If you would like to become involved as a volunteer at the Centre, or need more information about our regular activities, please do pop in or call us on 01263 713427, or email holtcommunitycentre@gmail.com. fundraising efforts of the people of Holt, to provide them with a large facility in which to hold clubs, events and activities at an affordable price. We continue to do just that today, and have reduced our prices recently to enable our regular groups to be able to meet with reduced numbers and income. But the reality of keeping a public building open is large ongoing maintenance costs, to keep us safe and up to date, and to keep the facility looking good. We also have increased costs due to our Covid safety compliance, all of which is now coming out of a diminished pot of money. We are so pleased that so many of our User Groups wanted to come back and start up again, and this has benefitted our community by once again providing wonderful activities and groups for them to enjoy, a fact that they communicate to us almost on a daily basis.

Dear Readers Starting with a reminder of normal life ….. fireworks, fostering and Cherry Tree Corner: Fireworks – Bonfire Night is upon us and various small celebrations may be under consideration. Whilst we all know to buy from reputable sellers Norfolk Fire Brigade would like us to check on firework and bonfire safety by going to: www.norfolk.gov.uk/fire. Norfolk Fostering Service is Looking for Local Foster Carers for Local Children: A stable and loving home can make an incredible difference to a child or young person, while also being an enlightening and rewarding experience for the foster carer. Carers are needed for children of all ages. The Council welcomes people from all sorts of backgrounds to care for our children and young people in different ways. They need someone who meets their particular needs, and these differ greatly – so children and carers are matched very carefully. Some carers still work full or part-time while fostering mainly as respite carers. Some welcome the children and young people into their homes to live with them all the time, while for others it might just be a weekend a month; some are emergency carers we can call on if we need them. Foster carers are paid an allowance which is dependent on experience and training. ‘We would like to hear from the optimistic, adventurous and positive individuals who can offer a child meaningful support. I am sharing the information via the Chronicle since frequently surprised as to who uses that route. The masks are see-through and have an antifogging barrier ensuring face and mouth always visible to aid communication. Social care providers will have access to the masks through a new pilot system. Law firm Hayes + Storr celebrate Holt office launch with fire fighters who helped save their building

Miranda Marshall, a director at Hayes + Storr who will jointly head up the new office with Jim Pallister said: “we’ve decided to name the building ‘Phoenix House’. There are buildings that deserve to be named because they have a story to tell and ours is one of them.”

Hayes + Storr Solicitors, one of the oldest law firms in Norfolk, has just opened new offices in Holt. The move comes despite coronavirus and a huge fire at Budgens which adjoins the new building and shares a party wall. Luckily the firm hadn’t yet moved into the new premises when the fire broke out.

She added: “We intend to bring new life to the building. The way we work has evolved so rapidly in recent months. The new offices offer easy access with social-distancing as necessary and are more modern.” Hayes + Storr have five offices across Norfolk. The firm has grown steadily over the years, investing in training and providing jobs for life. Chris Filby, a legal secretary who has worked at the Holt office for over 40 years, said: “I’ve worked at Hayes + Storr in Holt for most of my working life. It’s home from home and working at the heart of the local community is very grounding. It’s a fascinating and rewarding job.”

“When we saw the images, we thought we’d lost the building” said Jim Pallister, a director at the Holt office. “But the magnificent Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service concentrated their efforts on containing the fire and thankfully they managed to save our new office. We’re delighted they could be here with us today for the opening as we probably wouldn’t be here without them.”

Jane Arnup, an associate who has Hayes + Storr donated £1000 to worked at Hayes + Storr for over 34 The Fire Fighters’ Charity as a years, specialising in elderly client thank you for saving the services, said: “working here is building. This is testament to the hard work and dedication of our lawyers; and fantastic news after several months of challenging trading conditions. We're proud to be recognised as a leading regional law firm with a record-break-

Just like many other businesses, it’s been a challenging few months for Clapham & Collinge as we address the issues presented by the coronavirus pandemic and adapt to the new environment. Despite the obvious interruptions and challenges faced by the firm, we’d also like to take this opportunity to announce that we have maintained our plans for the ‘progression framework’ that was introduced to staff members at Clapham & Collinge last year. This framework offers a ‘pathway to partnership’ for the firm’s top performing individuals who meet the qualifying criteria including length of service, commercial acumen and leadership. Congratulations to Caroline Eaton (Family Solicitor), Erin Southgate (Conveyancer), Jamie Pearson (IT Manager), Lauren Abbs (Wills, Trusts and Probate Solicitor), Louis Hilldrup-Boorman (Marketing Manager) and Nicola Strefford (Head of Employment Law) who have recently been promoted to Associate.

Mark Kermez said ‘‘We are an incredibly ambitious firm and despite these uncertain times, we remain focused on developing our legal service offering. The success of this business is down to a number of things, but one factor stands out head and shoulders above the

rest; our people. It is the talented, enthusiastic, committed and motivated people that make this business what it is. It is those same people, and the many more who will join us in the years ahead, who share our vision and will drive this firm on to become the finest it can be. Congratulations to those who have been promoted to Associate and thank you for your hard work and commitment.’’

Norfolk Life by Richard Shepheard

There is no dispute that Lorina Mace (nee Baker aka Heron) is a Gypsy but what of her uncle by marriage, William Mace, father of the great pugilist? The census record of 1851 shows him resident at Chapel Road, Beeston with wife, one child and one grandchild. His occupation is given as "cattle dealer and fiddler". Gypsies--especially those of Hungary--are renowned fiddlers and Jem, himself, was an accomplished performer.

The Swaffham Gypsy Part 2

However, there is another Gypsy possibility here which challenges this. William Mace (Jem's father) and his brothers Thomas, James and Barnabas were all travelling blacksmiths and this at a time when there were no longer blacksmiths travelling with the Romany families. Petulengro is the Romany word for farrier-blacksmith, the word 'petul' being Romani for horseshoe. The services of the blacksmith being essential for the Gypsy travellers of that time.

Poley Mace appears in the early 20th century researches of Thomas William Thompson who says that Poley married two of Ambrose Smith's (Jasper Petulengro) daughters, Delaia and Pinki Smith. This creates a relationship between the Mace and Smith families, making Poley the son-in-law of Ambrose Smith and and invites further researches of the Mace family of Beeston-with-Mileham. I went to the Norfolk Records Office and the records of Beeston-withMileham, as it was then called. Entry no 474 gave the birth date of James (Jem, the great pugilist) Mace as 8th April 1831. He appeared to be one of seven children born to William and Ann Mace (Nee Rudd) at Beeston. At first it seemed that I had drawn a blank with Poley Mace. However, scrutiny revealed an entry no. 638 for 1839 giving a birthdate of 29th January for Lippolius Mace, the son of Barnard and Lorina Mace (nee Baker) William Mace, the father of Jem, is described as a "travelling smith" in some of the entries and a "labourer in others, while Barnard the father of Poley, has "no settled place of residence"against his name. Poley's mother (remember Jem saying that she was a Gypsy girl) has the unusual forename of Lorina and the more prosaic Baker as her surname. This introduces a puzzle which T.W. Thompson the scholar Romany had thankfully dealt with.

In his "Borrow's Gypsies" he says she was of the wider Gypsy family of Herne which is sometimes given Heron. There is a hint of frustration in his comments about the family: "Some of them have been as troublesome genealogically as a Gypsy whom I met at Stockport. His name was Young, he said, but the Youngs were really Hernes , his father was a Brown, but the Browns were really Bakers, and he did not know who the Bakers originally were, except that they were not Bakers."

Jem Mace's mother, on the other hand, had no hint of a Gypsy background. Ann Rudd came from an old Beeston family so it appears that the great fighter was what in his day would have been called "a-half and-half" with a sort of undertone of 'neither this nor that' and not to his advantage on the world stage in the 19th century. Neither was it in the world of the Romany. The very word "Romany" comes from the Gypsy "Roma" which means husband. Its significance lays in the loyalty of the Romany women to their husbands. The credo of the Romany race had three tenets which guaranteed their survival and identity as a people. These, according to Borrow who knew their language and culture, were: Separate not from the husbands. Be faithful to the husbands. Pay your debts to the husbands.

The first of these injunctions means stay with the travelling families; the second means don't marry outside the Gypsy race and the last be solvent and not indebted to the Romany families.

Poley Mace, it transpired, was one of thirteen children, but the only one to have been born at Beeston. The previous generation were mostly born at Great Fransham nearby. There is no baptismal record for William, (Jem's father) and the oldest of his generation, but there is a James baptized (1808) a Thomas in 1810, Elizabeth (1811) and a Barnabas in (1815). There are no traces of the Mace family at Great Fransham prior to this. The youngest, Barnabas, husband of Lorina and father of Poley, is central to my conclusions. There is a mysterious but arresting image of him of him in George Borrow's last work which brings the union I have been seeking between the Norfolk's great creative artist and the county's greatest athlete. To be continued.

Rare Robin Raises Money for Stiffkey Village

A very rare bird landed on Stiffkey marshes, thought to have been blown in recent winds from its natural habitat either in Southern Spain or the Middle East. The bird, a Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin, was reported early on the 22nd October, drawing visitors to Stiffkey marshes from all over the country. This is the first sighting of the bird in the UK since the early 1950’s. People came from across the country to catch a glimpse of this very special Robin. The big influx of bird watchers was something of an opportunity for fund raisers in the village. Stiffkey Playing Field Committee work hard to raise funds to maintain their playing field on Hollow Lane and as well, they have a new project in progress. The plan is to build a tennis court for the use of the village and that will also act as a fundraiser for the maintenance of the playing field. There is also a very active Cricket Club in the village which uses the playing field, providing enjoyment for all ages. “These facilities are very precious to us and our tourists, and our Robin was a most welcome visitor” said Siemon Scamel-Katz who had the idea for the donation bucket. “We put a bucket out to collect the coins and the visiting birders generously gave us a total of £250!” Donations can also be made to the JustGiving/Stiffkeyplayingfield page. Be like the bird who, pausing in her flight awhile on boughs too slight, feels them give way beneath her, and yet sings, knowing she hath wings. Victor Hugo

Acupuncture and the pandemic

Long Covid has been extensively treated with acupuncture with a lot of success. There are many standard treatments being used on the different aspects of body functioning the virus can attack. Treating this condition has been interesting in the breadth of treatment options being relevant. This is Chinese medicine strong point, that is can help numerous symptoms with a few points, eg arrhythmia, panic, rapid beats depressed weariness treated by the pericardium point, inner frontier gate, or weakened lungs, breathlessness, severe loss of vitality with lung point Great Abyss. The gut is commonly affected with the discomforts poor appetite and digestion diarrhoea and constipation, the Liver toxicity causes pain, irritation and sighing and the kidneys exhaustion, slow recovery. There are point protocols for the stimulation /relaxation of all the organs.

Antiviral point prescriptions such as release the exterior can help clear lingering viral symptoms. This last treatment describes the disease process as a battle for health upright qi versus bad qi. It’s interesting to hear people describe their battle with Covid as similar to a medieval war, with its in-your-face threat, and the way symptoms attack and die down in a skirmishing way.

One very good outcome of the viral pandemic is that there will be new knowledge learnt can be applied to ME, post viral syndrome, Lyme disease, that will mean the many sufferers of these diseases, will be better understood, and more help will be available.

Our FOOD BANK is available to help you.

FROM THE RECTOR Dear Friends, November can be a cold and dark month. As winter begins to take hold, the light of day is swallowed up by the ensuing darkness of the night and we prepare ourselves for the months ahead. The shadow that is Covid 19 also continues to cast its darkness over us too. So where are we to look for light in the darkness of November? In a way the Church’s calendar for November comes to our help. The Feast of All Saints on the 1st of November celebrates all God’s holy ones. Those glorious Saints who through word, deed, in life and often in death shone the light of God’s love in the world. They serve as a source of inspiration and as an example of the triumph of light over darkness. The Feast of All Souls, on the 2nd of November provides us with an opportunity to remember the light that our departed loved ones brought into our lives. While we may be saddened by their parting, the memories we treasure of them can continue to be source of light. November ends with the Feast of Holt’s Patron Saint, St Andrew, an Apostle of Christ who draws our attention to Christ the true light who enlightens the world with the selfless love of God. We can also see light in the acts of kindness, goodness, compassion and friendship we show to one another. The help that is currently out there in our community, given to the most vulnerable is another source of light. It helps to dispel the darkness of loneliness, despair, fear, hunger and want. Such light offers hope and hope is something we all need to keep hold of. November is full of light if only we know where to look and if we ourselves are prepared to be a source of light to others. May God bless you and yours and may you be a source of blessing to others. Fr. Howard

Lockdown book raising funds for Action for Children, Retired deaconess Brenda Hayes found herself at a bit of a loss at the beginning of lockdown so decided to start writing a series of Norfolk dialect verses and posting them on Facebook. They proved so popular she has now published a collection of poems in the form of a booklet and is selling them to raise money for Action for children. She describes herself as a ‘true Norfolk Mawther’ who grew up in Sheringham, later trained as a Wesley Deaconess and served communities in Plymouth, Brixton and Norfolk. She has now retired to Sheringham. She has a great love of the Norfolk dialect and the characters she has come across over the years, so much so they have inspired this delightful book. Autumn Bake Off!

It’s the ‘Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ according to Keats, and what better time to dust off your baking equipment and make a little treat for the weekend. If you are going to treat yourself, (or someone else) do it in style and go for quality rather than quantity. A really sumptuous and fresh homemade cake is a wonderful treat and appreciated by all; it’s a rare person who can say no to a squishy, moist and wholesome homemade cake, baked with care and love and a bit of individual flair. Sure, it may not look like every other cake, but that’s kind of the point. You don’t want to churn out something that looks like Mr Kipling, you want a bit of individuality, and if it’s a little imperfect, well that just proves you made it! The point is the taste and the love and effort you poured into it. Autumn is surely the perfect time for gorgeous indulgent cakes....as if we really needed an excuse for one. And we can convince ourselves that we are being a tiny bit healthy by the addition of carrots in this one. This lovely moist cake is a real crowd pleaser; a fabulous mixture of spice, sweetness, fruit and gooey frosting, it’s the perfect way to round off an Autumn celebration.

Wells Community Hospital Trust News – November 2020

Hello All,

Its November already, I know despite this strange year – it still feels it has absolutely flown by. But I also think many of us share the desire to reach December 31st 2020 and hope that 2021 brings a greater sense of positivity.

It is said that time moves faster as you get older, that’s because we are less conscious of our surroundings, not so much is new. Think of a child seeing the sea for the first time – or their joy at the Zoo. If only we could as adults return to that conscious way of enjoying life and its experiences.

In November, why not try to find 3 good things each day, it is said that People who are grateful tend to be happier, healthier and more fulfilled. Being grateful can help people cope with stress and can even have a beneficial effect on heart rate.

This action is easy to do yet its benefits have been scientifically proven. In tests, people who tried it each night for just one week were happier and less depressed one month, three months and six months later.

This is a great activity to engage children in positive thinking and in these times a good way to open up positive conversations. It can be cross generational too. So how do you do it? At dinnertime, bedtime or put that device down while sitting on the sofa. Think back over the day, can you recall three things that made you happy, you enjoyed or felt grateful for. With children and young people, a memory jar and some “post its” really help – storing away those happy positive thoughts and being able to visually see the jar fill with happiness. It also helps us parents to read back and see what made our children happy or save them for when they are older!

For us adults, a jar can be a good method too – through particularly trying times, you can record those positives that still break through cloudy, dark days. A notebook by the bed also helps you to keep a record and really cement that happy memory.

We have been building for our future here at the trust and I am pleased to announce that over the coming couple of months we will be building a Digital Hub on site, this means our local people can come here for a virtual/online consultation rather than travelling to the Hospital or elsewhere. Our team will be with you all the way through and we will make you a lovely cup of tea in our covid safe environment. Please do call us for more information!

From 2nd September, we will have a bereavement group in our garden room, initially starting on the first Thursday of each month. Please do join us for a chat in a warm and welcoming environment, refreshments, hot soup and a roll are provided. As numbers are restricted at the current time, please do call ahead, via our reception line below.

Anaesthetising Pets

complications during or after the anaesthetic. Next, our team consider the patients stress levels. Our purpose built separate dog, cat and exotic pet hospital wards along with our calming diffusers and music systems, aim to keep pets calm but by assessing stress or anxiety levels in advance we can make sure pets receive appropriate pre-medication to keep them nice and calm, and avoid any changes that might impact the anaesthetic. When booking admission appointments, we also try to book a later appointment for particularly nervous or anxious pets as this reduces their waiting time.

At Toll Barn Vets we are honoured to be trusted with loved family pets when they need surgical procedures both in routine and life-threatening situations. When a pet needs an anaesthetic this is understandably a very worrying time for both pet and owner, especially when it is an emergency or a life threatening situation, and we know that understanding what is happening to your pet is really important. Every veterinary practice is different and has different protocols and procedures for anaesthetics but at Toll Barn Vets we work to a well-established procedure. So what exactly do we consider when your pet needs an anaesthetic? Firstly we consider the species as many different injectable and gaseous anaesthetic drugs exist. Importantly, different species (and sometimes even different breeds within the same species) respond differently to the each drug and therefore species and breed play an important role in our choice of the right drugs to use to keep your pets as safe as possible. Seeing so many different species and breeds means we have a wide choice available to us, including Sevoflurane, a special gas anaesthetic often used in human paediatric surgery so we are able to choose the very best option for your pet. Secondly, we perform a detailed pre-anaesthetic check. During this we check heart rate, temperature and breathing rate. We also check for underlying health issues that might affect the anaesthetic choice. Much like in human hospitals we use this information to produce an ASA Score (an objective measure of the patient’s health and fitness for surgery). This helps us to predict and avoid, or specifically manage, any potential

What about the anaesthetic itself? We hope there is never an anaesthetic complication but we also know it is incredibly important to be prepared just in case. Our Team run regular in house “Anaesthetic Emergency Simulations” to make sure that we are all ready to leap into action should the need arise. One of the key things in an emergency is being able to administer medication into a vein quickly which is why all our patients undergoing anaesthesia have intravenous catheters fitted. This also helps us to administer intravenous fluids to help keep their blood pressure stable. Our team use a full range of specialised multiparameter machines which accurately measure blood pressure, oxygen and carbon dioxide saturations, temperature, ECG, heart rate, breathing rate and breathing efficiency on patients ranging from the tiniest lizard or bird up to the largest dogs. Of course, all this monitoring is only as good as the person using the equipment! We are very proud to only use qualified veterinary nurses rather than lay staff for all our anaesthetics, and this helps us detect and act on any changes that may occur, helping us to keep your pet as safe as possible. Following the anaesthetic, patients are recovered in our heated hospital wards where a qualified hospital nurse makes sure they are comfortable by performing regular “pain scores”, as well as making sure they have as many home comforts as possible to make their stay comfortable. Obviously this is a very brief summary of what is involved with anaesthetising your pet, so please give us a call on 01692 407126 if you would like to discuss your individual pets procedure.

A Lost World by Leslie Kinsley My Film Career

Christmas Department Now Open

After I retired from farming, I looked round for extra jobs to keep me busy. Looking after the shoot did not take all my time. Mr Rawlinson who lived in Stody asked me to help in his garden and with his wife’s horses. When they held parties, Elsie would come with me and help with washing up. Mr Rawlinson’s father in law was Dick Joice of Anglia Television so he knew what was happening locally to do with films. One day, Mr Rawlinson told me they were shooting a film called ‘The Grotesque’ in Norfolk. He asked me if I would consider taking the part of a molecatcher in this film. I did not have to speak, and I would be paid cash daily. I was delighted. The pop star Sting, and his wife Trudie Styler were involved in it. The first scenes were at Heydon Hall, and I went straight there from my gardening job and presented myself at the wardrobe van for a costume. The wardrobe lady looked at me in my old trousers, boots and my ripped brown mac belted with baler twine. ‘He is already perfectly dressed for this part’ she said I had my dogs, a pair of spaniels, with me, so they got into the film too. The filming went on for a few weeks till finally one scene was done using the old Guilhall courthouse in Norwich. A lady turned up there with some trained rats which had to run along the window ledges and over the benches during the action. There was a lot of screaming from the actors and it disturbed the rats. I helped the lady gather them up after filming. She also took the rats to a pub in Bodham along with a fox which lay on the bar counter. I really enjoyed stroking the fox. I also really enjoyed the food provided during filming. There was a huge trailer full of everything you could think of in the way of tasty treats. The stars queued up with us extras and did not push in or anything. You needed the food though, as some of the days were very long. One day went on from first light to midnight, and I grumbled when I collected my pay. ‘I suppose you want extra money,’ the man said ‘Thank you very much!’ I replied It was a pity in the end. Although we did go to Anglia Square and watch it, it never got distributed as it could not get a certificate. It was too ‘grotesque’!

Pizza to go at the Grove even in the summer we had lots of calls enquiring about takeaway pizzas so we’ve decided to take the plunge and offer them for the rest of the year.” Menus can be found at www.thegrovecromer.co.uk/restaurant We’re still serving food every evening from 5pm, plus beautiful afternoon tea each day and pizza to take away from 1st November. 01263 512412 for more information.

Although winter is nearly here it’s still possible to experience a taste of the summer in Cromer. The Grove launched their handmade stone baked pizzas on the lawns during the peak season to huge acclaim, full houses and long waiting lists as visitors and local residents enjoyed a new venture for the town under festoon lights and real fire burners. And now the family-run business is offering Cromer folk the chance to keep sampling their delicious pizzas with a takeaway service starting from November 1st. Head chef Reis Khalil said: “Our pizza menu was a huge success in the summer, and we’ve invested a fair amount to get a really good product. There’s a lot of variety on the menu, from a classic tomato and mozzarella to a Gressingham duck special, and of course we can cater for specific dietary requirements too. “Ever since we’ve started it’s sat beautifully alongside our two Rosette a la carte menu, but

Crab Eggs Benedict

We all know that the largest chalk reef in Europe lurks off the coast of Cromer and provides the most incredibly succulent crab and lobster which features on many a menu across the whole of the UK (in fact we saw Cromer Crab starring at Grand Central Station’s oyster bar in New York in the early 2000s). But this tradition may be under threat with authorities threatening a dramatic reduction in fishing, or alternative methods to the traditional crab pots used by the local fishermen for centuries.

Crab Eggs Benedict 1 crab 1 tsp of coriander chopped 1 spring onion chopped finely 1tblsp mayonnaise Pinch of salt and pepper Mix well in a ceramic bowl with a fork Place the mixture on half a toasted English muffin Balance a poached egg on the crab mix Pour three tablespoons of Hollandaise sauce over and garnish with chopped chives.

Whilst everyone is in favour of conservation it would be great to think that there is room for a happy medium in this case, allowing fishermen to fish and crabs to thrive. Rest assured we will continue to have this fantastic food on our menus, with this superb Crab Eggs Benedict to start a huge hit in the summer especially.

North Norfolk Photographic Society

North Norfolk Photographic Society is not to be stopped by a nasty Chinese virus! They met via the ether with the aid of Zoom on 7th October for a competition of digital images. About 25 members ‘attended’ the ‘meeting’ and the competition was judged by Paul Radden. There were 71 images entered by 25 members and Paul was most constructive with his comments; he spoke on every picture – mostly complimentary but also with polite criticism where necessary! The prescribed subject matter was ‘Close Up’ which gave opportunities for close-up photographs of insects and flowers among many other subjects. Instead of the points system that members had been awarded in the past, Paul Autumn by Cheryl Howell Radden gave the photographs a Gold, Silver or Bronze award – and several highly commended and commended awards as well. Two members achieved Gold awards, Lauren Griffiths for ‘Through the Droplet’ and Frederic Landes for ‘Piggyback Nasties’. Lauren’s picture was of a colourful flower seen through a droplet of water and Frederic’s was a beetle whose back was covered by ‘nasty’ mites! Silver went to Cheryl Howell - ‘Autumn’, Diana Knight ‘Redknee Tarantula’ and Liz Akers - ‘Heading for Nectar’. Winners of Bronze awards were Liz Akers - ‘Common Blue Damselflies’, Lizzie Wallis - ‘Pollination’ and Paul Richards ‘Demoiselle’. During more normal times, North Norfolk Photographic Society holds meetings in Holt, but in the meantime people with an interest might like to view the Society’s Redknee Tarantula by Diana Knight website at https://www.nnphotosoc.org/ or to contact the society’s Hon. Secretary at secretary.nnps@gmail.com.

Test and Trace

Residents in Norfolk are being reminded that they are the most important link in the Test and Trace system. The steps to take if you or any member of your household display Covid 19 symptoms are simple and can be key in preventing infections being spread. If you are symptomatic you must isolate as soon as you notice symptoms and to have no face to face contact with anyone outside of your household. It is important to do this straight away, and for everyone in the household to isolate as they could also be

infectious even without symptoms. As soon as you isolate, visit www.nhs.uk/ coronavirus or call 119 to book a test. Stay in isolation until you receive your results, which will include instructions on what to do next. Cllr Bill Borrett, Norfolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, said: “This isn’t just about protecting ourselves, but making sure we all play our part to protect everyone around us. We all have friends and family that we want to keep safe – whether that’s parents, elderly grandparents, and even our children. And we need everyone to play their part to help us do that. We all have to work together to keep each other safe. Cath Byford, Chief Nurse with NHS Norfolk and

Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Our call to everyone is, if you have coronavirus symptoms then self-isolate, get a test and help us track down people you have been in contact with. It’s one way that together we can beat this virus. But Test and Trace isn’t only about symptomatic individuals: when a positive test result arrives, teams of contact tracers will search for everyone the Covid positive individual has been in recent contact with and will alert them. If you are alerted by NHS Test and Trace, you must isolate for 14 days after your contact with the individual. If you develop symptoms, you must book a test at the NHS coronavirus website and your household must isolate.

Local Outbreak Control Plan Keeping yourselves and others safe A Norfolk Local Outbreak

Control Plan has been launched under the strapline Protect Ourselves, Protect Others.

Protect Norfolk to set out how the county will support the national NHS Test and Trace programme to prevent and contain the spread of coronavirus. The plan sets out how Norfolk’s Public Health will work with a range of County Council departments and community partners to prevent local outbreaks in the ďŹ rst place. However, if outbreaks do occur, the plan sets out how they will be tracked in speciďŹ c work places, settings, and communities and managed to limit further transmission. Also detailed is how Norfolk residents can ďŹ nd further guidance and support. Norfolk’s Director of Public Health has led on the development of our Local Outbreak Control Plan in partnership with district councils, NHS Chief Executives and the Norfolk Resilience Forum. It was developed after the Government announced that every area of England should produce a plan to prevent and manage local outbreaks of coronavirus as lockdown measures are eased. Prevention is key, and with further restrictions having been lifted, measures such as hand washing, social distancing in public places, and encouraging people to access testing immediately if they are unwell, are more important than ever.

Coronavirus is still with us. Cases in Norfolk are low and we want to keep them that way. The best thing to do to protect ourselves and others is to continue to wash our hands regularly, keep our distance from others and wear a face covering in shops and on public transport. To protect others, you and everyone living in your house should isolate straight away if you show symptoms. The symptoms are: a new continuous cough; fever; or a loss or change in your taste and smell. As soon as you isolate, visit www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119 to book a test. Everyone is eligible to get a test if they have symptoms. You can choose either a drive-through test or a home test kit. The Gallant Gardener – Making good quality Leaf Mould

Autumn is really upon us now and for many who are avid gardeners, time to collect a really cheap but useful resource. Autumn leaves are a rich source of humus essential for gardening. All leaves and conifer needles will eventually break down into leaf mould. Some leaves, such as oak, beech or hornbeam, break down with little assistance and produce an excellent quality product. Thick leaves like sycamore, walnut, horse chestnut and sweet chestnut need to be shredded before adding to the leaf mould pile, as they are much slower to break down. Alternatively, they can be added to the compost heap after shredding. Evergreens such as holly, aucuba and cherry laurel, are better shredded and added to the compost heap, where they will break down faster than if added to the leaf mould pile. Conifer needles will eventually break down but may take two to three years to decay. Conifer hedge clippings are better added to the compost heap than used for making leaf mould. Pine needles are worth gathering and placing in a separate leaf mould pile as they produce acidic leaf mould, which is ideal for mulching ericaceous plants, such as rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, pieris and blueberries. Deciduous trees are dropping their leaves now, so this is a good time to gather up leaves for starting a leaf mould pile. Pine needles may be shed throughout the year, but especially in spring, so need to be gathered gradually for a pine needle leaf mould pile. How to make leaf mould

Collect your leaves either using a spring tine rake, leaf collector or wooden boards. Place the leaves into a bin liner, moisten them if they are dry, then pierce holes in the bag with a knife or garden fork, tie the top loosely and stack the bags out of sight for up to two years. Alternatively, make a square or round frame from chicken wire or similar, supported at the corners or at intervals around the circle with stakes or bamboo canes. Ideally this should be in a sheltered part of the garden to ensure that the leaves are not blown away. Most leaves take about two years to break down. If it becomes dry moisten the heap. Using Leaf Mould

Good quality, well-rotted leaf mould (more than two years old) can be used as seed-sowing compost, or mixed equally with sharp sand, garden compost and good quality soil for use as potting compost. Poor quality leaf mould, or leaf mould that is less than two years old can be used as mulch, soil improver, autumn top-dressing for lawns, or winter covering for bare soil. If your leaf mould pile is slow to break down into leaf mould, try turning it regularly to aerate the leaves and speed up the breakdown process. Make sure that the leaves do not dry out, moistening the pile if necessary, in hot, dry weather. A project that I am involved with is highlighted below with details of how to become involved if you want more information about home composting.

Community in the time of Covid

Words cannot express how pleased we were to welcome groups back to Weybourne Village Hall at the beginning of September. Village Halls are all about the people who use them, enabling organisations of all shapes and sizes to give that boost to well-being, which can only come from the camaraderie of a shared activity, never more important than in 2020. Efforts by the Committee at Weybourne Village Hall have enabled us to work with user groups to minimize risks and provide a ‘Covid secure’ environment. This means that both user groups and the management committee have to complete Risk Assessments to comply with government coronavirus guidelines, as they change and evolve. Over the last few years we have built on the work of previous trustees and volunteers to modernize the facilities, and are thrilled to announce that in the New Year we will be able to provide audio/visual equipment and WIFI, thanks to a grant from the National Lottery’s Coronavirus Community Support Fund. As more groups return, they will be able to share their activities remotely with anyone who is not yet able to attend a group in person. We are delighted that some new groups have booked our facilities, while being happy to keep the slots open for our regular users whose members may not be quite ready to start up again. Current clubs and classes, all socially distanced, include Table Tennis, Pilates, Yoga, Singing, Art and Badminton . If you would like to be a part of this dynamic enterprise, and especially if you have some IT or financial skills, why not call for a chat – 07707 489437. We are currently recruiting for a limited number of new volunteer trustees and would be delighted to speak to anyone from the local area, you don’t even have to live in Weybourne. Charity No. 304112

Norfolk & Suolk Police in Paw-session of two new four-legged furry recruits

Puppy police dogs Remus and Milo, with their respective new handler’s PC Stuart Watson and PC Adam Haylock, join the team specialising in drugs, cash and weapons searches. Both Springer Spaniels, aged just 13-weeks-old were litter brothers and will start their journey in both forces by assisting their handlers on duty, getting used to various surroundings. They will then go on to begin formal training in 12 months’ time. PPD Remus will eventually join PD Hera as a crime ďŹ ghting duo and PD Milo will join PD Loki. OďŹƒcers within the dog section intend on documenting their journey and training as they both eventually become drugs/weapons and cash specialist search dogs. PC Haylock & PD Milo It comes as both PD Billy and PD Ivan retire from their duties. tInspector Sally Hammerton from Joint Protective Services said: "We are very pleased to welcome both Remus and Milo into the police family. We are looking forward to watching them grow within the force as they eventually progress into drugs, weapons and cash specialist search dogs. "Whilst we love seeing our furry friends develop specialist skills through training, we must remember those who have already dedicated their lives to the force. "We sadly lost PD Claude earlier this year, after he had been suering with a number of health problems. Claude was an exceptional dog and will be fondly remembered by all handlers in the section, as well as those oďŹƒcers and sta who had the pleasure of meeting him.â€? Norfolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), Lorne Green, said: "A big welcome to Remus and Milo, who join a great team and vital part of the policing family. Oh yes it will! Live panto WILL happen at Sheringham, and Great Yarmouth - with thousands of children joining in online too

A pioneering project is beating the pandemic to keep panto alive in two seaside theatres and scores of Norfolk primary schools. The scheme will see live performances of a festive fun show at Sheringham Little Theatre, and St George’s Theatre in Great Yarmouth along with a special online screening into children’s classrooms and homes. The school’s screenings are happening thanks to the Norfolk Music Hub, which promotes music-making among local children, and was seeking to team up with a panto, which are in short supply this year. Debbie Thompson, director of both theatres, said: “We have done lots of work with the Music Hub, and when I heard they were looking for a panto I said ‘look no further.’ “We have been looking for ways to stage a shortened, socially-distanced panto with a small cast at both venues to reduce the cost risk – and this link-up with the Hub adds an extra dimension to ensure youngsters do not miss out on their annual dose of pantomime. “In true panto style it’s a real happy ending for all concerned, even before curtain up!â€? Rapunzel – The Lockdown Panto is being written and directed by Sheringham Little Theatre panto and summer season regular Nick Earnshaw. The live stage shows – which are 50 minutes long without an interval – will be at Sheringham Little Theatre on December 22, 23 and 24. The live streaming will take place on Loraine Metcalfe as the sorceress December 16, ďŹ lmed with a live Photo courtesy of Richard Batson band and an audience of invited

youngsters at St George’s Theatre Great Yarmouth , whose cabaret-style seating allows for more space and 76 guests in the 220-seater auditorium during Covid restrictions. Sheringham can host 40 people in its 160 seats under current rules. The sessions will be run by the Come and Sing Company on behalf of the Arts Council-funded Norfolk Music Hub. During the live screening, which will be captioned and signed, youngsters will be encouraged to get into the festive spirit by dressing up as their favourite panto character, and to post pictures on social media. It will take place at 1.45pm on Wednesday December 16 with a warm up session from 1.30pm. Tickets to Rapunzel – The Lockdown Panto – are ÂŁ12 (ÂŁ8 u-16s) at Sheringham and ÂŁ10 (ÂŁ6 u-16s) at Great Yarmouth available via www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com or www.stgeorgestheatre.com Schools wanting to ďŹ nd out more about the online streaming should visit The Norfolk Music Hub website https://www.norfolkmusichub.org.uk

Bonfire Night Facts

\Ä VtÄtuÜxáx

It was actually Warwickshire-born Robert Catesby who led the Gunpowder Plot, not Guy Fawkes. There were also 13 other people involved. St. Peters school in York is the only place in England that does not celebrate bonfire night as a show of respect for their former pupil, Guy Fawkes. As he awaited his grisly punishment on the gallows, Fawkes leapt to his death to avoid the horrors of torture that awaited him. He died from a broken neck.

Call Oliver today to discuss your requirements or arrange a site visit. For examples of previous projects visit Barford Landscapes on Facebook.

Despite the obvious concerns which surround us, this is a very active time of year for your local rowing club. There are now numerous opportunities to row and the booking calendar looks full. Keen rowers are now selecting outing dates into 2021. The club’s immaculate boats are ready to use. Bluejacket will remain at Blakeney for a while longer and Hoi Larntan is now firmly established at its winter home, Barton Turf on the Broads. Masks, visors and long fingered gloves are to the fore in order to help with safety at this difficult time. See some great pictures of crews rowing, in Blakeney and on the Broads, on the club website, crablakeney.wordpress.com. Crews venturing to Barton Broad have had to share the water with many hired craft on which holiday makers are enjoying the extended season. Nevertheless, those cruising and those rowing have been invariably cheerful. It's great to be back on the water making the most of the fresh air to exercise whenever possible. Rowers remain optimistic and it is hoped that there will be competitions to be entered in the not too distant future. Until then, rowing remains a carefully organised social activity for all who wish to take part. If you are interested in learning more about your local rowing club and its activities, then phone Humphrey, the club captain, on 07542 371469. Stay safe! Barry Howes.

We realise that this year has been tough for most people and we are offering special pricing for the winter season on some of our treatment packages and combinations. Coltishall Clinic is well known for offering effective cutting edge laser, skin and vein care treatments and have patients travel from all over the world for such treatments and results. One of our unique serving proposition [USP] is that we offer a full range of services under one roof. We firmly believe in the importance of a full ‘tool-box’ so that we can offer customized bespoke treatments to our patients. Patients are often pleasantly surprised when they think surgery is the only answer to their problems but it turns out that a much better option for them is non-surgical! This is the beauty of coming to a clinic like ours where we are very fortunate to work with a full range of laser and light devices, non surgical, minimally invasive and surgical options. Only a well-equipped clinic with experience can offer you such a well-rounded package. So here are some popular treatment packages and combinations on offer for you. SPORT AND RECREATION Holt continues the family tradition

A FOOTBALL QUIZ TO TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF ‘THE BEAUTIFUL GAME’

Holt Rugby Club have embarked on the new season with a new President from a family with a long-standing involvement in the club. Chris Harrison takes over in what is already proved to be the most challenging season in the club’s history. The English Rugby Union have indicated that competitive rugby will not take place until the new year at the earliest, and the resulting season will be much shortened whenever it starts. Chris is the son of club founder and former Captain and President, Edward Harrison who sadly passed away last year. In his playing days Chris was a three-quarter who, in his time. captained the second XV. He has three sons who have played recently and one of them, Henry, is now in his second season as first XV captain. Given the lock-down his main challenge is motivating players and keeping them engaged. Chris Harrison succeeds Paul Williams who has completed five years as President of Holt: a period in which the club has prospered on the field and transformed the Bridge Road facilities. Paying tribute to him, Chris said: “Paul Williams has taken the role of President of Holt Rugby Club to a whole new level. His support to three successive Chairmen who served in his period of tenure has been tremendous. He has been a great ambassador for our club within the rugby community. On behalf of all members I say thank you Paul, and also to his wife Jan who has been a great support to her husband and to the club”

Founder Members of the Football League quiz 1 point awarded times by the question number (75 points possible) 1. Which two clubs in the Premiership and Football League have Albion as part of their name? 2. Who were the first club to win both the League and the FA cups in the same season? 3. Who are 'The Pirates' in League One? 4. Where was the 1962 World Cup held? 5. Which of the 12 founder members of the Football League are no longer in the top 4 divisions in English Football? (Warning tricky) 6. Which of the 10 founder members of the Scottish Football League are still playing in the top 4 divisions in Scottish Football? (Warning tricky) 7. For whom did Alessandro Pistone play in an FA Cup final in the late 90's? 8. Which club has been managed by Micky Adams, Paul Bracewell and Jean Tigana amongst many others and currently has a former player as manager? 9. Three players have been named 'Young Player of the Year' twice. Who? 10. Which 2 players from Sierra Leone are playing in the EFL Championship (one pictured here) (quadruple points for this one)

Answers in the Next Issue

LAST ISSuE’S FOOTBALL QuIz ANSWERS

1. Ferenc Puskas 2. Mexico in 1970 and 1986 3. Slaven Bilić 4. Middlesborough 5. Alan Shearer 6. Hull City 7. Blackburn, Bristol and Doncaster. 8. Welsh 9. As it happens, the final match proved to be as good as cup final because, going into the final match, Brazil were top of the group with uruguay only 1 point behind, which meant the winner of the Brazil v uruguay match wins the trophy.

Solution to No. 283: 1. Qb4, no threat. 1… Kxa7+ 2. b8N; 1… Rxa7 2. Rc8; 1… Kxc7+ 2. bxa8N. The key is marked, to guard b6, b7, b8 and d6, but the two promotions to N in reply to Black’s discovered checks, shown in Miniature (7 units), are impressive.

No. 284, the second in the current solving competition and, as it happens, the same vintage as No. 283, has a nice key (again, no threat) with three variations following the moves of the black B which show a similar theme in one respect. The construction is beautiful, the white pieces on b4 and d4 serving to limit the moves of the dark-square Bs without the need for extra force. Difficulty 3.

Rule of Law

constitution which are the rule of law and parliamentary sovereignty.

By Miranda Marshall,

Thomas Bingham, successively Master of the Rolls, Lord Chief Justice and Senior Law Lord of the United Kingdom, and the only person to hold all three offices, wrote ‘The Rule of Law’, published in 2008, 6 months before he died. It was chosen as ‘book of the year’ by several eminent people across the political spectrum.

Director, Hayes + Storr

The Rule of Law in relation to the Brexit negotiations is much in the news currently. At least it makes a change from the pandemic.

In England we do not have a written constitution: nor should we. The closest thing we have is the Rule of Law. It may sound like a computer game or the title of an airport novel, but it is ancient. Lawyers and others can get emotional about it. To some it has become emblematic of what makes English law great. Its origins are ancient and found in many societies and philosophies worldwide.

Bingham said he first chose the title as a subject for a lecture he was asked to give some years before, as he was not sure he knew what it meant. He also said that those who used the expression did not know either, or did not mean the same thing. Following the lecture, The Guardian newspaper media described Lord Bingham as ‘the most revolutionary man in Britain’.

The Rule of Law is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as: "The authority and influence of law in society, especially when viewed as a constraint on individual and institutional behaviour; (hence) the principle whereby all members of a society (including those in government) are considered equally subject to publicly disclosed legal codes and processes."

The Rule of Law has come to mean an amalgam of human rights and civil liberties, on the one hand, and security against a terrorist attack, on the other. It is a good thing, but the meaning is different and tailored (and twisted) to suit the purposes of those that use it.

The Rule of Law means that Law is supreme and is above every individual. The Rule of Law is a system to protect citizens against their Government, so as to ensure it does not treat them unfairly, or arbitrarily deprive them of their rights. It has evolved into being viewed by the liberal young as synonymous with human rights.
