A Note from the editor
Well Autumn arrived with a bang! The roofers will be happy. Covid 19 restrictions are ever changing, creating yet another blow to our leisure and hospitality industry. We are very lucky here in North Norfolk however, with one of the lowest incidence of infections in the country. I like to think that this is down to most people obeying the rules and being careful and considerate. Now, more than ever, we need to keep this up and avoid a further lock down, for the sake of our businesses and our vulnerable. So, stock up on those designer face masks and dig in. This may be a long haul, but it will be worth it when we come through the other side. Oh, and don’t forget to get that flu jab! We will be continuing to publish the magazine monthly for the foreseeable future until advertising and editorial picks up. Copies may take a little longer to deliver due to occasional problems with covering delivery rounds, but magazines are available at most of our usual pick up points. If you have any interesting stories or pictures to share with our readers, you can email them to Jo on info@holtchronicle.co.uk Enjoy your October magazine and wrap up warm. Keep well and safe. Budgens of Holt Staff thank community after crowdfunder raises more than £7,000.
Budgens of Holt staff have thanked the community for their support following an online fundraiser, which was designed to support employees after a fire devastated the town’s only supermarket. A large cheque for £7,222 was presented to staff last month after the crowdfunder closed following an outpouring of support. The fundraiser was designed to show appreciation to staff for serving the town during the pandemic - and over many years - following the fire on June 20. The post office was moved to the nearby Bakers and Larners shop, and home deliveries started against from its Aylsham store, but the fire left many locals without work and a supermarket. After discussions with staff it was decided the proceeds would be shared evenly amongst the 70+ employees as they await details on the store’s future. Jono Read, who created the online fundraiser, said: “Budgens of Holt was a lifeline for many people in the town over the last 35 years, and in particular during the pandemic, and Holt is still feeling the consequences of losing it. “The crowdfunder was an attempt to turn the sadness and shock on the night of the fire into something positive, and I’m delighted by the response, and how many came forward to offer support. My first job when I was a student was with Budgens and I still have friends and family working there, so I’m pleased we’ve been able to give something back at such a difficult time.” Jane Gurney-Read, Managing Director for CT Baker Group which owns the food store, also offered her thanks. She said: “The support from the local community since we lost Budgens of Holt in June has been quite simply incredible. I would like to thank Jono Read for setting up the crowdfunding for the Budgens of Holt team and every single person and business who donated to it. Your kindness, generosity and recognition of the team, who had given so much throughout the coronavirus pandemic and for the many years the store has been an integral part of Holt, has been hugely appreciated Mixed loads of seasoned wood. ! and will not be Delivered locally within a 20 mile radius.! forgotten.” Caroline Gray, who Full load: £150! received a cheque as part Half Load: £90 ! of the crowdfunder, said: “I was quite overPBDN with border_LayoutContact:! 1 10/10/2019 14:58 Page 1whelmed and it was such Ryan on 07823406823 or ! a lovely gesture from Ally on 07767414391! people of our community and much appreciated.”

News from The Venue
Despite the difficulties of the Covid situation, we are ‘Keeping Calm and Carrying On’ at the Centre, with a number of our User Groups returning to their regular activities, and a few new ones added. Now more than ever, it’s essential that we remember the importance of social interaction, relationships and supporting one another. We have done all we can to ensure that people are still able to meet safely at the Community Centre, because loneliness and isolation kill just as much as Covid does. It’s great that groups such as the Community Café, 1960’s Club and the many exercise groups are continuing to operate, with new risk assessments in place, and new operations in place to make meeting safe and achievable. Unfortunately, we have had to suspend all screenings at the Centre, due to lack of numbers. It is very expensive for us to run the Cinema, as licencing laws must be followed, so unless we get enough numbers, we simply cannot afford to screen films. So, we will wait until next year, when hopefully the public are more confident and Covid is more under control. Do keep checking our regular advertising, and the website, for updates on new groups starting, and events at the Centre. This month, we have another Bingo Night, plus a new Saturday Night Supper, which is an affordable 2 course Italian meal for only £6 a head. The bar will be open, the music on, the food excellent, and hopefully we will have a good crowd come for an informal and enjoyable supper. These evenings are a key way for us to be able to open the centre for everyone to enjoy, get people back
Tropical Heaven
Every so often, a recipe occurs that is so ridiculously easy, but so sublimely delicious, that you just know it is going to be a favourite for ever. Whilst experimenting with pudding recipes for the café, this happy accident materialised, and we have served it several times this year to much delight! These tins of mango puree are what I would call a ‘hero’ ingredient, they are just so versatile and useful. I make a point of always having them on the shelf. This is also great even without the fresh fruit, which just adds extra nutritional goodness and flavour, but the puree is a wonderful flavour all on its own, and you can even make a super quick version by just mixing the puree into some really good, thick Greek yogurt. This is the ultimate version here, a super luxurious and creamy pudding, that cleanses the palate and will have everyone coming back for more.

together again safely, and raise funds for the Charity. Financially it’s a very hard season for Charities such as the Community Centre, which rely heavily on regular user groups, fundraisers and private party bookings to thrive, many of which are difficult to achieve. So please do come to Bingo and the Supper Night, both of which are affordable, local nights out, where you can be confident that our Covid measures will ensure your safety. Numbers for the supper are limited, so please book in advance. We have 3 new ventures at the Centre, Monica Clare chiropody beginning in October, offering expert and affordable foot treatments on Thursdays, Sewing Club with June Clarke, an exciting new group with tuition on many aspects of machine sewing and alterations on Tuesday afternoons in October, and Hartbeeps, which are delightful and award-winning Mother and baby/toddler sessions based around music, starting in November every Friday morning. It’s wonderful that the Venue can support such diverse activities, offering sessions to a wide cross section of our community. I’m sure there will be more challenges ahead through the winter, but we are committed to keeping the Centre open and safe for people to gather, albeit with measures in place to ensure safety, and the Committee and volunteers remain dedicated to ensuring the growth and longevity of this vital community resource. If you would like to become involved as a volunteer at the Centre, or need more information about our regular activities, please do pop in or call us on 01263 713427, or email holtcommunitycentre@gmail.com. Duncan Baker September Newsletter
Dear all, I hope you have enjoyed the summer and fine weather throughout most of August. Parliament has now resumed for what is sure to be an extremely busy few months back in Westminster. As I look forward to that, I want to reflect on what has been my first Summer Recess and just how enjoyable it has been to spend the majority of my time touring the constituency, meeting so many of you. There has been no sitting about and on my first day back home, I started a 54-location tour working from East to West across the constituency. From the brilliant sunshine in Horsey, Hickling and Ludham on day 1 we finished in the pouring rain in Langham, Holkham and Wells six weeks later! Being active, approachable, and visible in the community are some of my principle aims as your MP and as I made my way around the constituency, the reception from everyone I met was hugely welcoming. I have been truly humbled by the warmth from so many residents who took the time to meet me and ask me questions, and it’s been a pleasure solving so many problems that people wanted to share. Whether helping constituents with cancelled operations or taking up highway issues in many of our villages, the tour has been a great success and it has been enormously rewarding to help so many. From listening to many stories of people overcoming such difficult situations throughout the pandemic, to meeting entrepreneurs who’ve started businesses in their garages during lockdown, not a day went by when I wasn’t amazed by the spirit and communities that define North Norfolk. It has been an incredibly busy summer with a huge influx of visitors to our area. This has been a lifeline to our local economy, and North Norfolk alone has enjoyed 203,000 discounted meals through the Eat Out to Help Out scheme, benefiting local businesses by over £1m. Despite such a busy period we have continued to see remarkably low infection rates. As our children return to school, having missed seeing their friends for many months, I wish them all a safe return. In the run-up to Christmas, I will be visiting more towns and villages around the constituency, offering surgeries, and supporting residents, charities, and businesses in any way I can.

A few words from Sara Thornley at Holt Holistic Centre
What is true health? We hear a lot about the importance of being healthy – but what does it actually mean to be healthy? Well, to start with, it’s not just about being ‘not sick’. Health is much greater than that! True health is when the body and mind are working at their most optimal level and are working well together. It means having the energy and vitality to really do what you want to do in life, which is especially important during this time. It is more important now than ever before to take care of your health. How do you do this? To begin with, we need to learn how to breath correctly. The diagram is then able to relax which in turn calms the nervous system, reducing the body’s stress signals. Get hydrated by drinking small amounts of water throughout the day and eat water filled foods like fruit and veggies. Eat a balanced whole food diet reducing processed foods and sugar and take supplements wisely to support your nutritional needs. Sleep is when the body repairs and heals itself, get into good habits of going and getting out of bed the same time every day and sleep in a pitch-black room. Exercise and move your body as much as possible. The body needs movement to help move the vital fluids around the systems, cleansing, feeding and repairing the body. Exercise outside as much as possible enabling your body to gain as much vitamin D from the sunshine. Laugh a lot. Happiness has a key role in maintaining a healthy immune system.
Three persons cut off in the marshes whilst fishing between Wells and Stiffkey on the incoming tide
Wells Inshore lifeboat was paged at 6:50 pm on Thursday 17th September by Humber Coast Guard to rescue three persons who had gone into the marshes to fish with a rod and line but had mis-judged the height of the tide and became cut off by the incoming tide on high sand in the marsh system. The Wells Inshore Lifeboat was already afloat and was on exercise at the time and diverted immediately to the casualty’s indicated position. The lifeboat arrived on scene at 7:07 pm and in conjunction with the local coastguard at the vantage point at Stiffkey they were able to locate the casualties quickly. At 7:22 pm the inshore lifeboat met with the persons cut off and ascertained they were all well and then started to transfer the casualties to the safety of the shore at Stiffkey Greenway. With the three casualties all safe and supported by the local coastguard team, the inshore lifeboat was released and returned to the boathouse through the creek system. The lifeboat was then sanitised, refuelled and ready again for service at 9.00 pm.
Please be aware that this was the second incident in a week to persons cut off by the tide whilst fishing on the high sands between Wells and Stiffkey. Going fishing at dusk on an incoming tide can put fishermen in danger.
Here at Holt Holistic Centre we have several therapists who can help with your general wellbeing and we also stock a range of vitamins and supplements. For more information please call 01263 711898 or email holtholistic@yahoo.co.uk

Will your home and make it fit for the future By Emma Langley
This arrangement can be beneficial should your partner need care after your death, as only their share of the property is available to fund the care fees with your share protected for your beneficiaries. Careful thought needs to be given to how payment of outgoings, mortgages and Inheritance Tax are to be funded. Such an arrangement is often not possible if equity release is either in place or likely to be required.
Solicitor, Hayes + Storr
Property is often the most valuable asset in someone’s estate when they die. It is also a home and may need to remain a home for a surviving partner, spouse, or children. It can be difficult to balance the need to provide a home for loved ones or dependants with ensuring your assets ultimately pass to those who you wish to provide for.
Lifetime Gifting
Gifting a property during your lifetime to an individual or into a Trust may seem appealing for both Inheritance Tax and Care fee planning. However, such a gift also means relinquishing control of your asset and can risk your security.
Types of Property Ownership
There are many different ways in which a property can be held. This could be in your sole name, or jointly with others, or even in a Trust.
The law in relation to gifting property, property Trusts, Inheritance Tax and care fees is extremely complex and depends on your individual circumstances. Advice is therefore strongly recommended to ensure your wishes are achieved effectively, taking into account your individual circumstances.
Property in joint names is held as either “Joint Tenants” or “Tenants in Common”. If held as Joint Tenants, the property will pass to the surviving owner on death, regardless of the terms of your Will. The surviving owner of the property is then free to do as they wish with the property.
If you would like further advice on this matter please contact Emma on 01328 850735. If you require advice on any other legal matter call 01263 712835 or email law@hayes-storr.com.
If held as Tenants in Common, each owner has a separate and distinct share and therefore their share can be left in accordance with the terms of their Will.
Blended Families
If you own a property with a partner and have children from a previous relationship, you may want your children to benefit from your assets, but would not want your partner to be made homeless in the event of your death.
Your Will can be structured to create a Trust on your death, ensuring your partner can remain living in the property for a period or the rest of their life. When that right ends or on your partner’s death, your share of the property then passes to the beneficiaries named in your Will. Your partner’s share would pass in accordance with the terms of their own Will.
This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.

The Holt Chronicle October 2020
Norfolk Life by Richard Shepheard The Swaffham Gypsy
When Tyson Fury took the world heavyweight boxing title from Diontay Wilder on American soil last month it was, as was said at the time, the greatest sporting event since England won the world cup in 1966. There was for me a bonus in Fury's victory and that came with the nomenclature on the waistband of his trunks which said "Gypsy King". A century-and-a-half ago another world heavyweight champion, as remarkable as Tyson Fury is today, began his career with the the nom de guerre "The Swaffham Gypsy". This was Jem (James) Mace 1831-1909 who, though the last of the bare knuckle pugilists, is considered the father of modern boxing because of the science that he brought to the sport. And It was he who first made boxing international. But I had another great incentive. I have been a Borrovian for longer than I have been a fan of boxing. Most know George Borrow (1803-1881) as the man who, through his writings, brought the Gypsies to great art, but he often turns to the pugilism of his day and regularly appears in boxing anthologies because of his wonderful representations of epics of the prize-ring. Borrow was born at East Dereham and Jem Mace at Beeston next Mileham about eight miles away, so Norfolk produced a literary giant and a world famous athlete in the first half of the 19th century. The Gypsy factor is common to them both and seems to appeal for a kind of interface of their individual careers. Jem Mace, though totally illiterate, left an autobiography called Fifty Years a Fighter in which he casts off the suggestion of that early sobriquet "The Swaffham Gypsy" that he carried Romany blood. He attributed this idea to the fact that his "cousin and great chum" Poley Mace, the son of his uncle Barney (Barnabas) Mace had run off from Norwich Fair with a Gypsy girl and had married her. I have established who this Gypsy Girl was and will return to her in my conclusion with Borrow's assistance. As for her son, Poley Mace, I was interested to note that the spelling of his forename was "Pooley" in Jem Mace's autobiography and this gives that work a kind of authenticity. In Norfolk the 'o' vowel sound is pronounced the same in the words 'pool' and 'pole' so I can accept that Jem's dictation is genuine and not the work of some enterprising ghost writer. I will return to Poley Mace with researches I made years ago which gives his true name, one that came from Romany travels from Europe

centuries ago. Not far into Fifty Years a Fighter, Jem deals with a prize-fight he had with one Faden Smith: "After that I received a challenge from a man called 'Farden' Smith. He was known as King of the Gipsies and was a regular giant standing 6ft 2ins in his stocking feet and broad in proportion. Like my fight with Pinfold, this was brought off on Norwich Hill. (The old cattle market) ...." The fight was interrupted by the police after it had gone five rounds and the contestants took to their heels. The fight was rescheduled for Mousehold Heath the following day, near the Gypsies encampment but Faden Smith had seen enough of the up-and-coming Jem Mace and amiably conceded to him. Jem leaves us a beautiful account of festivities which ensued concluding with: "....All day long we danced and sang, until the sun sank to rest, and the big round harvest moon came out above the scattered pine trees, flooding all the purple heath with white radiance." I wonder if the Gypsies would have afforded Mace such hospitality if they didn't think him one of their own! The Faden Smith of Jem's work is the brother of one much more famous. This is Ambrose Smith who appears in several of George Borrow's works as Jasper Petulengro and is his most famous Gypsy character. Petulengro is the Romany word for farrier-blacksmith, the word petul being their word for horseshoe. Borrow makes a kind of lament in his first famous work The Zincali (The Gypsies of Spain 1840) that there are no petulengroes among the travelling Gypsy families in Britain at that time. The family of Jem Mace will answer George Borrow's lament and he will supply a stunning image of Poley Mace's parents in his last work Romano Lavo Lil 1874. To be continued.

SAINT ANDREW’S & ALL SAINTS NEWS The Parish of Holt with High Kelling
Rector: Fr. Howard Stoker SSC, The Rectory, Church Street, Holt NR25 6BB Tel: 01263 712048 email:holtrectory@tiscali.co.uk Assistant Curate: Fr Gary Gould. Tel: 01328 830715, Email: garygould57@gmail.com Parish Office Tel: 01263 713479 E: standrewsholt@btinternet.com website at www.holtchurch.org
FROM THE RECTOR Dear friends, PARISH GIFT DAY ~ Saturday 31st October 2020 2020 has proved to be a very difficult financial year for many local charities, community groups and of course local businesses. The church too has not been spared the challenges of a decline in income. While those who regularly attend church have been prevented from doing so for at least 4 months of the year they have continued to give, which is very much appreciated. Yet opportunities to raise other funds has not been possible. Because of the Coronavirus pandemic we have not be able to raise income during the Holt Festival Week, and from concerts and other social and fund-raising events during the year. Income too from the hire of the Parish Church Hall and the meeting room has ceased. Therefore, our income for 2020, even with a grant from HM Government, is expected to be over £30,000 less than it was last year. As you can imagine this has financial consequences. It currently costs us £330 per day to maintain the church’s presence in the parish and this is before we begin to repair, maintain and restore our church buildings. Sadly, we are unable to meet all our financial commitments this year and so have reduced our expenditure to a minimum including reducing the amount we contribute to the Diocese. Like many charities and good causes, we are appealing to the generosity and good will of people in the parish to support their parish church and help us maintain and sustain a church that is open to all and a Christian presence which services the parish. Our annual PARISH GIFT DAY is planned for SATURDAY 31ST OCTOBER and will provide an opportunity for people to support either St Andrew’s in Holt or All Saints, in High Kelling. Anything, you can give no matter how small a donation will help maintain and sustain the Church in the Parish and for that I say, “thank you.” If you are reading this and do not live in the parish then perhaps you might be kind and generous enough to support your own Parish Church. I am sure they would appreciate your generosity. Every blessing to you and yours, Fr. Howard

Dear Jo,
An Appeal for Drivers
advantage from the volunteer’s point of view is that there is no fixed commitment - you are offered a trip which you can accept or turn down depending on your other commitments. This flexibility allows volunteers to easily adjust the times and journeys they do. Car running costs are reimbursed.
Over recent months we have seen the value of volunteers who have kept things going in our community by helping friends, neighbours, and others. Our drivers at Holt Area Caring Society have certainly been involved, as they have been over the last forty years.
We drive people from their home to various medical appointments and take them back home. This is valuable, interesting, and satisfying work. A big

Autumn Planting
to know how deep the bulbs need to be planted and what time of spring they will emerge. Generally speaking, snowdrops and crocus are the first to appear and are also the smaller bulbs, then come daffodils, narcissus, followed by tulips. The rule of thumb for the planting depth is three times the height of the bulb, so in the case of tulips 5cm or 2inches, they will be planted 15cm or 6inches deep, they also need to be planted one bulb width apart, with the pointed end upwards. This can be your first and deepest layer. Cover with compost and follow on top with a layer of daffodils or narcissus, following the same rules. As you are nearing the top cover again and plant, crocus, snowdrops which will be the first to flower and the shallowest planting. As a result you have three layers and several weeks of colour, the container needs to be watered regularly, and if you have problems with mice or squirrels cover the top of the container with wire mesh until the bulbs appear. As you have planted containers, so you have the ability to move them around your property, so they benefit from the sun. To promote good flowering next year, feed the bulbs every seven to ten days with a high potassium fertiliser such as a liquid tomato feed. Begin feeding as soon as shoots appear, and stop feeding once the foliage starts to die down at the end of the season. You could also think about other plants to put in the top of the containers which will give you further colour and interest, winter pansies, violas, cyclamen, dwarf wallflowers and heuchera’s. On the allotment, now is the time to plant winter onions and garlic followed in mid-October with a winter sowing of broad beans that will stand through the winter and give you a head start in the spring. Chris Wright
Autumn is nearly upon us and we need to be thinking about next year in terms of what to plant now and what we would like to grow. Bulbs are the main topic of this article especially spring bulbs such as: Galanthus (Snowdrops), Crocus, Daffodils, Hyacinth, Iris, Narcissus and Tulips. Bulbs are very versatile and can be planted in open ground, under grass and in containers. I am going to focus on container planting; however, the general rules apply to all planting areas. Bulbs should be planted in free draining multi-purpose compost, with one part of grit to three parts compost to aid drainage. If they sit in an area of high moisture the chances are, they will rot. With containers we want to get the longest flowering show possible and one way to achieve this is through lasagne planting or layering of the bulbs. So, we need

Give consciously
It’s time to start thinking about the gifting season and Holt’s Amber Organics has plenty of ethical goodies to give.
Bamboo is a renewable product and a great way to reduce our reliance on manmade materials. Jungle Straws has used sustainably sourced bamboo to create a range of cutlery, coconut poke bowls and straws. Beautiful additions to any kitchen and wonderful to use, kick-start someone’s zero waste mandate with a present that helps to reduce plastic pollution too.
Since opening in August, Amber Organics in Franklyns Yard has quickly gained a reputation as a provider of alternative health products, specialising in CBD oil. This season, the shop has added to its range with a wide selection of natural, sustainable, ethically-sourced products which offer perfect gift solutions.
Socks may be a functional item but Swole Panda has upped the fun factor with its fabulous designs to suit every wearer. Made from sustainably sourced bamboo, the socks are naturally antibacterial, moisture-wicking and breathable, making them both comfortable and stylish. Pop a couple of pairs in a Christmas stocking to keep their toes toasty this winter, or make a family style statement on Christmas morning with a matching pair for every member of the clan.

Wells Community Hospital Trust News – October 2020
Hello All, I hope you are all staying safe after such a strange few months. But from the continuous changes in advice its going to be a worrying time for many and its very difficult to predict what the future holds. One thing that can be predicted is that the months and seasons will continue to change. It is helpful to keep in focus what can be controlled and try to be mindful that there are many things we can not. Let us continue to support our friends, family and neighbours which has been our focus at Wells Community Hospital. We are of course missing seeing lots of our usual friends, volunteers and supporters, but we would like to let you know our Team and services are always here for you. September was a very busy time for us at the Hospital, during this month we said thank you and farewell to our General Manager, Samantha Taylor, who worked tirelessly for the Trust. My name is Sarah Peberday and I am the new General Manager. I live on the North Norfolk coast with my family, I am passionate about improving what we already offer here at the Hospital but also working with the fantastic Groups, Services and other Charities locally to support those in need. I hope to meet many of you soon, please do send me an email (general.manager@wellshospital.co.uk) or feel free to give me a call. Wells Community Hospital Trust is not part of the NHS, so we are unable to make clinical decisions regarding the services we offer here, but we are committed to seeking where we can help and continue to work with our NHS colleagues to do so. In early September the Hospital Trust hosted a Stakeholder event – “Being Ambitious Together” which was an opportunity to hear some of the great work that was already happening in our local communities and how we could work across Health, Social Care, Local Businesses and Charities to support Wellness and provide support at Wells Community Hospital. I would like to thank all the 50+ attendees (via Zoom) for their input and I can confirm that the Trust have some specific actions and focus that we will be working on initially, with other ideas to explore at a later date. I am very excited about our future and wider relationships. In other very positive news for the Trust, we are very pleased to confirm that Lord-Lieutenant of Norfolk The Lady Dannatt MBE, has agreed to be our Patron. Lady Dannatt is an active supporter and patron of many charities across Norfolk, with a one of her areas of focus being mental health fitness. We are very grateful for her support. We are very excited to announce that we have a new service provider joining us on Tuesdays, Vanessa, who specialises in Semi Permanent make up, facial treatments and skin tag removal but she also provides medical micropigmentation for those post op after breast cancer (Areola pigmentation) and treatment of scars, burns and birth marks. Please contact us to find out more information. Thanks again to all our supporters, large and small, because without you we wouldn’t be able to continue especially at this time. Have a lovely month, stay safe and we hope to see you soon.

microsurgical equipment to locate Lola’s stomach, liver, pancreas and kidney within her chest and delicately relocate them to their “normal” position within her abdomen. Our team then carefully repaired the hole (hernia) in her diaphragm to prevent the problem recurring in the future. After intensive nursing within our dedicated exotic pet hospital ward, Lola recovered well and began eating and passing faeces and was discharged to continue her recovery at home. Rabbits are able to hide the signs of disease well so it is always worth getting them checked thoroughly.
As an Accredited Gold Standard Rabbit Friendly Practice we are proud to be able to treat even the most complicated of cases but sometimes these cases can be particularly challenging! Beautiful six year old Lola Lola (a Netherland Dwarf mix rabbit) was referred to us for a second opinion as she had been suffering from repeated episodes of gastrointestinal stasis (when the intestines stop moving and the rabbit stops eating and passing faeces). These episodes can be potentially life threatening so it is important to find the underlying cause. Our team performed a thorough examination and realised that Lola’s eyes were bulging slightly more than normal. In rabbits this can be a sign of a problem within their chest so our team performed x-rays to assess Lola’s chest and thex-rays showed there was a large “mass” within Lola’s chest which was compressing her lungs and preventing them expanding properly. To further assess this mass and find out its origin and assess any potential treatment options a CT scan was performed. This scan showed the mass within Lola’s chest was actually her stomach, pancreas, right kidney and part of her liver. These organs had travelled through a diaphragmatic hernia (a hole within the diaphragm which should separate the chest and abdomen) and the organs were compressing Lola’s lungs reducing her ability to breath. At the same time the lungs and heart were compressing Lola’s stomach and abdominal organs which meant she couldn’t eat or digest food properly hence the episodes of gastrointestinal stasis. Luckily for Lola, Toll Barn Vets is one of only a handful of East Anglia veterinary centres with an in-house CT scanner and also the facilities and skills to perform an intricate surgery to save Lola’s life. Our team of vets and nurses had to use specialised anaesthetic techniques to keep Lola asleep and pain free as the hole in her diaphragm meant she was unable to breath for herself whilst under general anaesthetic. Our surgeon then used

A Lost World by Leslie Kinsley Keeper not poacher - part 3
Business as (nearly) normal!
The shooting began on the 1st of October for us, as that was when the season for pheasants opened. On a shooting day, having collected Strider at 4am, we would go off to the duck pit and the wood where the pheasants were roosting. There I would scatter grain to encourage them to stay around. Then we went to the yard to collect the vehicles. The beaters had a tractor and trailer, as did the guns. The trailers were just open till later when we acquired some covered ones. I had to find the beaters and I looked for people who could listen to instructions and could control their dogs. I also found a ‘picker-up’ to collect dead and wounded birds. He had two dogs that were fearless when it came to going into really rough areas to hunt for the birds. As shoots were in autumn and winter, weather was often the decider on when we would go out. Heavy rain would stop us, as would thick fog. Richard who was the lead gun made the call on this. He was very safety conscious and would stand his ground on cancelling the shoot especially if it was foggy. In restricted vision, shooting is pretty dangerous to guns and beaters alike. We always began at the duck pit as ducks are nervy birds that leave an area quickly. Then we would go on to the wood and the sugar beet. The beaters would disturb the pheasants so they would fly towards the guns. The guns would stand about 20 yards away. As it was a small shoot of only 8 guns I did not organise them, but concentrated on the beaters. Controlling the beaters was not easy. If there were too many birds in one spot it was important to keep the dogs away as they would send them all up at once overwhelming the guns. One friend ignored me when I shouted ‘All dogs on leads’ and sent about 30 birds up at once. He just laughed at me when I got savage. I even sent 2 beaters home once, when they ignored my instructions and caused half our pheasants to go onto a neighbour’s land, ruining our day. Everyone got very wet and dirty beating and to save some of the walking one of my friends would collect us with the tractor and trailer. He always seemed to go anywhere but where I asked and we would have to shout for him and wait in the cold. We were given a beer at lunchtime, but had to provide our own sandwiches. The beaters were paid at the end of the day, but I got ‘tips’ instead. My money would depend on how many birds we got. There might be 300 birds shot on a good day. Richard always made sure I got a fair amount. Businessmen tend to be careful with their money!

Tarte Tatin
Autumn is here with a bang and of course fruit in all forms are coming off the trees (a little quicker than preferred after the recent storms!) The outdoor seating on the conker lawns wasn’t the place to be as seventy-mile-per-hour winds turned our ripening horse chestnuts into very effective munitions, which left access to the garden last Friday night quite an ordeal. However John’s apples survived and are now sitting happily in the kitchen waiting for the chefs to incorporate them into menus. In fact there were so many that all the staff have been carrying home bags and boxes of cookers and eaters to distribute to friends and family. This is actually a Raymond Blanc all-time classic recipe that we have used several times over the years; often serving in individual portions perfect for our restaurant. It’s a great dish and I’m sure it will feature again in the forthcoming months.
Do come and see us for dinner – we start our a la carte at 5pm so there’s plenty of time to adhere to the 10pm curfew! 01263 821463
Ingredients
300g all-butter puff pastry plain flour, for dusting 6 dessert apples (about 900g/2lb), such as Braeburn, Cox’s Orange Pippin or Adam’s Pearmain 100g golden caster sugar 85g unsalted butter (60g/21/4oz chilled and
diced, 25g/1oz melted) crème fraîche (full-fat please!) or high-quality vanilla ice cream, to serve.
ensure there are no gaps. Brush the fruit with the melted butter.
Method
STEP 1 Roll the pastry to a 3mm-thick round on a lightly floured surface and cut a 24cm circle, using a plate as a guide. Lightly prick all over with a fork, place on a baking sheet, then cover and freeze while preparing the apples.
STEP 2 Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Peel, quarter and core the apples. Put the sugar in a flameproof 20cm ceramic tatin dish or a 20cm ovenproof heavy-based frying pan and place over a medium-high heat. Cook the sugar for 5-7 mins to a dark amber caramel syrup that’s starting to smoke, then turn off the heat and stir in the 60g diced chilled butter.
STEP 4 Bake in the oven for 30 mins, then remove and place the disc of frozen puff pastry on top – it will quickly defrost. Tuck the edges down the inside of the dish and, with a knife, prick a few holes in the pastry to allow steam to escape. Bake for a further 40-45 mins until the pastry is golden brown and crisp.
STEP 5 Allow to cool to room temperature for 1 hr before running a knife around the edge of the dish and inverting it onto a large serving plate that is deep enough to contain the juices. Serve with crème fraîche or vanilla ice cream.
STEP 3 To assemble the tarte tatin, arrange the apple quarters very tightly in a circle around the edge of the dish first, rounded-side down, then fill in the middle in a similar fashion. Gently press with your hands to

The Holt Bookshop has re-opened under new owners, Pam Horrocks and Keith Britten. The bookshop has moved to Lion House Court behind the Black Apollo Coffee shop in Holt. The new owners are confident the new Holt Bookshop will continue to be a success after it was opened at the beginning of August by Duncan Baker MP. The business partners - who used to help out at a previous incarnation of the store in Appleyard - have taken it over since previous owner, David Makinson retired. Mr Britten said that the service the shop offered made them stand out against internet retailers. He said: “It’s a difficult time to open a shop but it’s also a really exciting time to open. People in Holt want us to continue, and they’re really pleased the town will still have an independent bookshop. “Amazon is very clever at providing logistics, but you can’t browse online in the same way that you can do in a bookshop. We have a large comprehensive stock in the shop, and we can also get the majority of published books the next day for customers if we don't have a title in stock” The new shop has an open, airy feel, and personal touches like an armchair with an ‘owl’ seat which Ms Horrocks upholstered. Mr Makinson originally opened the Holt Bookshop about 15 years ago, but when it closed due to lockdown, he decided not to reopen and pass the business on instead. Since the shop re-opened it has been busy with local customers and also tourists.

“Moor” room for boats created in Cley-next-the-Sea!
Thanks to the hard work of a group of volunteers, an extra 55 meters of mooring space has been created in the rejuvenated harbour in Cley-next-theSea, two years after a permit was originally applied for. Simon Read, Chairman of Cley Harbour said “It is fantastic to be able to finish the latest stage in the restoration of the harbour and quay in Cley. In the last 4 years, Cley has become a popular destination for visitors by boat from Blakeney and Morston - so much so that we were beginning to run out of room for visitors to moor up. The extra The socially distanced mooring space means our visitors can now working party! come ashore and visit the wonderful shops, galleries, café and pubs we have in Cley” Cley is well known as one of Norfolk’s most beautiful coastal villages. Its stunning architecture, unique shops and cafes, flower-lined lokes, world-renowned bird life and popular beach attract thousands of visitors a year. In recent years, its harbour has also been brought back to life as a result of input from the Cley Harbour committee, the hard work of many volunteers and also Cley Parish Council, all dedicated to the restoration and maintenance of the quay and harbour, which is set in the shadow of Cley Windmill. For many years, siltation had choked what once remained of the ancient port that Cley was famous for. The restoration work undertaken over the last few years now means that the harbour is once more navigable for boats up to 30 feet. Further details on www.cleyharbour.co.uk.
Hedgehog Haven
This is Stumpy, he is a 100grm hoglet, unfortunately both his back legs are deformed, this could have happened in the nest as sometimes siblings will nibble the others feet,he can move quite quickly & is gaining weight my only concern is that he had a nasty injury on his back which had fly strike which some had already hatched into maggots I'm hoping iv caught them in time before any internal damage is done. Test and Trace
Residents in Norfolk are being reminded that they are the most important link in the Test and Trace system. The steps to take if you or any member of your household display Covid 19 symptoms are simple and can be key in preventing infections being spread. If you are symptomatic you must isolate as soon as you notice symptoms and to have no face to face contact with anyone outside of your household. It is important to do this straight away, and for everyone in the household to isolate as they could also be
infectious even without symptoms. As soon as you isolate, visit www.nhs.uk/ coronavirus or call 119 to book a test. Stay in isolation until you receive your results, which will include instructions on what to do next. Cllr Bill Borrett, Norfolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, said: “This isn’t just about protecting ourselves, but making sure we all play our part to protect everyone around us. We all have friends and family that we want to keep safe – whether that’s parents, elderly grandparents, and even our children. And we need everyone to play their part to help us do that. We all have to work together to keep each other safe. Cath Byford, Chief Nurse with NHS Norfolk and
Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Our call to everyone is, if you have coronavirus symptoms then self-isolate, get a test and help us track down people you have been in contact with. It’s one way that together we can beat this virus. But Test and Trace isn’t only about symptomatic individuals: when a positive test result arrives, teams of contact tracers will search for everyone the Covid positive individual has been in recent contact with and will alert them. If you are alerted by NHS Test and Trace, you must isolate for 14 days after your contact with the individual. If you develop symptoms, you must book a test at the NHS coronavirus website and your household must isolate.
Local Outbreak Control Plan Keeping yourselves and others safe A Norfolk Local Outbreak
Control Plan has been launched under the strapline Protect Ourselves, Protect Others.
Protect Norfolk to set out how the county will support the national NHS Test and Trace programme to prevent and contain the spread of coronavirus. The plan sets out how Norfolk’s Public Health will work with a range of County Council departments and community partners to prevent local outbreaks in the ďŹ rst place. However, if outbreaks do occur, the plan sets out how they will be tracked in speciďŹ c work places, settings, and communities and managed to limit further transmission. Also detailed is how Norfolk residents can ďŹ nd further guidance and support. Norfolk’s Director of Public Health has led on the development of our Local Outbreak Control Plan in partnership with district councils, NHS Chief Executives and the Norfolk Resilience Forum. It was developed after the Government announced that every area of England should produce a plan to prevent and manage local outbreaks of coronavirus as lockdown measures are eased. Prevention is key, and with further restrictions having been lifted, measures such as hand washing, social distancing in public places, and encouraging people to access testing immediately if they are unwell, are more important than ever.
Coronavirus is still with us. Cases in Norfolk are low and we want to keep them that way. The best thing to do to protect ourselves and others is to continue to wash our hands regularly, keep our distance from others and wear a face covering in shops and on public transport. To protect others, you and everyone living in your house should isolate straight away if you show symptoms. The symptoms are: a new continuous cough; fever; or a loss or change in your taste and smell. As soon as you isolate, visit www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119 to book a test. Everyone is eligible to get a test if they have symptoms. You can choose either a drive-through test or a home test kit. Stay in isolation until you receive your results, which will include instructions on what to do next. NHS Test and Trace will contact people who test positive for Covid-19. They will ask you about who you have been in contact with from two days before onset of symptoms to seven days after. This will identify people at risk who could pass on the virus before (or without) showing symptoms themselves. For more information about how to stay safe and how to get support if you need it whilst isolating visit: norfolk.gov.uk/coronavirus

New Lifeboat House at Wells - Building works due to start in September
Work is about to begin on the building of a new lifeboat house at Wells next the Sea. Completion is expected in 2022 and the new Wells Shannon Class lifeboat which was part funded by a successful local campaign in 2014 – 2015 will arrive in Wells shortly afterwards. The new, bigger boathouse is required to house the Shannon Class Lifeboat which will replace the now 30 year old Mersey Class lifeboat, the “Doris M Mann of Ampthill”. With the RNLI’s newest, purpose-built Shannon lifeboat, the rescue service provided by the volunteer crew at Wells will be using the best equipment available to make their job safer, faster and more effective. The boathouse will be located beside the beach bank near the Beach Café and the Coastwatch hut and will replace the old boathouse, parts of which are more than 100 years old. The lifeboats will exit the boathouse through the front doors and be taken up and over the Poppy Skipp sea defences on a purpose built ramp straight into the channel or, if the tide is out, will be Independent Consultant towed on their carriages to a low water launch site in Holkham Bay. The first phase of construction involves driving piles into the ground to form the foundations Available for home parties, orders, catalogue fairies and much more for the boathouse and ramps; building up the ground level with sand and dredged material supplied by the 07502 950280 Port of Wells and constructing the concrete floor slab. This “heavy” construction work will poppyskipp233@gmail.com take place between September 2020 and May 2021. Erection of the timber frame building Facebook/Instagram: Poppy’s Pampering structure will follow. The RNLI and Wells Lifeboat Station will be working closely with the contractors, JT Mackley and Reside Construction, the Port of Wells and Holkham Estate to ensure that safe access to the beach and the car park is maintained for members of the public throughout the project. Regular updates will be posted on our website as well as being signposted at the beach car park, the Beach Cafe and Pinewoods. If you would like to keep an eye on progress from the comfort of your own home you might like to check the webcam images and progress reports at www.wellslifeboat.org/boathouse If you have any queries about this project or about how it might affect you or your business please direct them by email to: boathouse@wellslifeboat.org For any coastal emergency dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard. North Norfolk Macmillan Cancer Unit Progress Report
Great news! We’re over halfway there! But we still need your help! The Cromer Community and Hospital Friends fundraising campaign was launched just before the Covid 19 pandemic broke. The target was to raise ÂŁ500,000 to equip the planned new North Norfolk Macmillan Centre. Unfortunately, all the major fundraising events for the year have had to be cancelled which was a major blow to the campaign. But the amazing news is that with the help of a legacy, local grants, and the wonderful endeavours of local people the Hospital Friends have managed to raise over ÂŁ250,000, half of the amount needed. The building work on the new Centre is progressing well and is on target to open in the Summer of 2021. Below is an artist’s impression of what the new Centre will look like. However, there is still a long way to go to raise the money to fully equip the Centre so that it can work at its full potential. This will be an amazing and desperately needed facility, especially as the demand for cancer referrals after Covid 19 is expected to increase signiďŹ cantly. The Cromer Hospital Friends have to try and ďŹ nd alternative ways to raise funds because of the current situation and we have some really exciting ideas in the pipeline, including a wonderful online rae, but if anyone has any suggestions we would love to hear from you. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to something truly worthwhile so please help if you can. To contact the Friends or to read more about the 2020 Appeal, to see suggestions of fundraising ideas or donate please visit our website www.cromercommunityhospitalfriends.co.uk or call 07498 470199

Holt Rugby Club re-opens
Even in the current diďŹƒcult circumstances, Holt Rugby know that they can rely on their army of voluntary helpers. As a result of their eorts, and the determination of the Committee, the Holt clubhouse was open for business and mini and youth rugby took place on Sunday 6th September.
Games were played on six pitches with thirteen age groups operating in pods of twenty. In total well over a hundred players were involved. At all stages steps were taken to minimise the risk of infection. At registration, details were taken for track and trace and temperatures of players and supporters checked with head thermometers. A well signposted one-way system was in place for the bar, toilets and access to the pitch. There were thirty-minute gaps between playing sessions; balls were washed every ďŹ fteen minutes -requiring the provision of three designated dustbins for this sole purpose!
For the spectators the bar was open with bottled drinks and cans served in plastic glasses as well as plentiful supplies of burgers and hot dogs
Youth and Minis Section Chair, Neville Drewry, emphasised that the intention was to make everyone feel conďŹ dent and comfortable with arrangements going forward and that the Club had succeeded. He expressed his appreciation to the more than twenty volunteers who turned out on the day. This has created the platform for a return to league rugby, which must await the green light from the English Rugby Union. With every prospect of a competitive season starting in the autumn, Holt are ready to go.

The Dome is employing the services of Norfolk Cleaning Ltd. who are a local firm specialising in cleaning as required under COVID 19 conditions. The website (link above) gives more details and is Steve with Lord Dannat regularly updated, so please refer to that for the latest Dome news and to confirm that nothing has changed. The Spitfire was mounted on its plinth on 20 August and will remain there until the end of October. However as noted in issue 133 the formal Paving & Landscaping unveiling and dedication ceremony will only take place once the Dome can re-open normally - hopefully in Spring 2021. However, the Spitfire has already sparked a great deal of interest, not least amongst the many people who have supported the project during the last two years. More email barfordlandscapes@yahoo.com details of the dedication plans will follow. On 1 September we welcomed ex Royal Engineers Steve Craddock and Matt Lum who were raising funds for Help4Heroes on a bike ride from Kent to the National Arboretum in Shropshire. This is an annual event called the Big Battlefield Bike Ride and this year was originally scheduled to take place in France to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the Dunkirk Evacuations. This was cancelled by Covid-19 - so they decided to do the same distance in the UK, and lay wreaths at war memorials along the way. Steve himself suffers from PTSD, but he has been a phenomenal fundraiser for the cause – close to £500,000 in the last 13 years, and he is the largest individual fund raiser for the charity. The Lord Lieutenant for Norfolk, Lady Pippa Dannatt accompanied by General the Lord Richard Garden Design Driveways Fencing Dannatt, and North Norfolk MP Duncan Baker, were at the Dome to greet him, along with Dome Trustees and volunteers. Call Oliver today to discuss your requirements or John Blakeley (www.langhamdome.org) arrange a site visit. For examples of previous

Treat your skin this autumn. Cost effective, skin rejuvenation treatment special offer packages are available
You are still active and you feel great. But, the effects of time, sun, wind and toxins in the air have taken their toll on the appearance of your skin. It’s not as smooth as it was when you were younger. Now there are effective procedures available to reverse these changes. We have created special cost effective packages to look after your skin during the cooler months. We have not one but three packages to suit every budget. What is common with these combinations is a pampering touch, enjoyment, some ‘me time’ and results. 1] Silver package includes diamond microdermabrasion and chemical peels. These are fantastic treatments to polish and brighten the skin. Not only this exfoliates and polishes your skin, it also stimulates collagen synthesis in the deeper layers to improve the overall skin quality. Microdermabrasion is then followed by LED treatment with a red light to further improve and brighten your skin to give it a nice glow and a plump and fresher feel and look. 2] Gold package includes No needle mesotherapy in addition to the above treatments. We use a computerised CO2 laser to open precise micro-channels in the skin in a painless manner. These are then used for infusion of hyaluronic acid, vitamins and minerals in a painless, no needle way. This is ultimate natural skin rejuvenation technique. 3] Fractional laser toning/ clear lift/ Laser genesis skin toning. A quick nodowntime lunchtime laser procedure for skin toning and brightening. Includes diamond microdermabrasion followed by q switched laser or laser genesis procedure. If you always wanted a laser skin treatment but worry about cost and recovery, this one is for you. Pigmentation treatments A uniform skin tone and texture is desired by many irrespective of their colour and considered a sign of skin health. Pigmentation can have a number of causes such as excessive sun exposure,

genetics, injuries, inflammation or disorders such as melasma. Melasma is a commonly acquired disorder of hyperpigmentation. Treatment of melasma has been traditionally centered on the use of daily sunscreen and topical bleaching creams or chemical peels. A careful evaluation and diagnosis of cause of pigmentation is important. Response to treatment can be variable and recurrence very common so some kind of maintenance such as long-term use of sunscreen and lightening agents is often recommended. Most benign pigmentation and pigmented lesions however can be treated very successfully. Why not give us a call on 01603 736487 or log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk and check out our special skin rejuvenation promotions.

SPORT AND RECREATION A FOOTBALL QUIZ TO TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF ‘THE BEAUTIFUL GAME’
Rugby is Back in Business at Holt RFC
GRASSROOTS rugby is back in business and clubs in Norfolk are ready to hit the ground running thanks to the NatWest RugbyForce Weekend 2020 and the RFU. Last weekend saw clubs including Holt RFC and North Walsham RFC carrying out improvements and repairs to the facilities to ensure they were ready for the resumption of the sport at grassroots level. This is a big step for clubs as the RFU moves to phase D in the Return to Community Rugby Roadmap. Plenty of hard work has gone into making the return to community rugby possible, with volunteers at the club certainly not shy in rolling up their sleeves to play their part. With the programme now able to return safely, NatWest is offering more support for the rugby community than ever before with a record number of clubs getting involved in the programme this year. NatWest has awarded grants ranging from £500 to £3000 to clubs to help renovate facilities and remain sustainable for longer in these challenging times. Extra planning was also required to ensure the activity took place safely, with the club following the Government Coronavirus guidelines and the RFU’s guidance at all times. Rugby at all levels would not be possible without the efforts of everyone on the grassroots scene, with the hard work not lost on those at the top level. “I look forward to NatWest RugbyForce Weekend ever year,” said Rugby World Cup winner and NatWest RugbyForce ambassador Maggie Alphonsi. “Grassroots clubs are the foundation of our rugby community and it's so important that we look after them, all muck in and get them ready for when rugby returns.” Ex-England player and NatWest RugbyForce ambassador James Haskell added: “Although this weekend is slightly different to previous NatWest RugbyForce Weekends, it's actually more important than ever that this event takes place. “I love seeing all the volunteers being involved and getting their clubs ready for the return to rugby.”

Employment Law Update: Coronavirus Job Support Scheme by Shaun Taylor
With the end of the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme in sight (31 October 2020), the Chancellor has outlined the structure of an additional scheme, the Job Support Scheme, ('JSS') that will start from 1 November 2020 and run for an initial 6 months.
The JSS is intended to move away from the furlough scheme and only support viable jobs, roles that are still required but face reduced hours due to reduced demand flowing from the economic impact and the continuing restrictions.
As such, to benefit from the scheme, employees must work at least 33% of their usual hours.
Employers will have to wait for the guidance and legislation to be released by the government to see the detail of the scheme and whether it will be a viable option. But we know from the introduction of the CJRS that this may be inconsistent and take several iterations before all questions are answered.
Main Points: The main points known so far are: 1. Employees must be working at least 33% of their usual hours.
2. For the hours lost and not worked, the government and employer will each pay one third of the equivalent salary. 3. The government contribution will be capped at £697.92 per month.
The example provided by the government shows that an employee working 33% of their normal hours will be paid in full for that 33% by their employer. The government and employer will then pay an additional 22% each (66% x 2/3), subject to the cap, resulting in the employee receiving 77% of their normal pay. Eligibility: • All employers are eligible however, large businesses must show a fall in turnover, as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, in order to apply.
• Both employees and employers are eligible even if they did not use the CJRS scheme previously.
New Life Cleaning Ltd
• Employees must have been employed on 23 September 2020 in order to be eligible.
• Employers who are eligible to claim the Jobs Retention Bonus can do so along side the JSS.
Employers are not able to serve redundancy notices on employees who are on the JSS. Whether this means consultation can take place or not is unclear.
