Meet our young men who went to fight and see how the people left behind coped with war. See items recovered from the battle zones on loan from the New Farm Aviation Heritage Museum, Frettenham.
The Victorian steam launch 'Falcon' will be steaming Tuesdays to Thursdays, so take a unique boat trip in our tranquil waterways. As seen on Channel Four’s Great Canal Journeys!
Our lovely riverside setting is perfect for a picnic. Make the most of a Broads spring and come and see us!

“A friend for life is how Ronald Bloxham describes North Norfolk health volunteer Richard Fry
Richard has helped him settle into residential care, a decision he made following a hospital stay, with Richard continuing to visit him. They both enjoy each other’s company immensely and look forward to seeing each other.
Ronald was referred to the service through an integrated care coordinator from his GP practice to have social contact as he lived alone and also to support him to use his laptop to send emails and use the internet.
Richard applied to become a volunteer with Voluntary Norfolk’s North Norfolk Health Volunteers Service. He applied as he wanted to have that connection with an older person again Tree and Hedge specialist after having such a close relationship with his People who care about trees grandparents who NPTC Qualified * Fully insured he has sadly lost. During each visit there is a mutual respect and a great deal of chatting about all sorts of topics. Richard describes his visits as giving him a “different dimension to my working week and it’s nice to give something back. They both agree that they equally get something out of the befriending partnership and that it shouldn’t just be one sided. “Volunteering is always a two-way street says Natalie Hickman, the Voluntary Norfolk coordinator who made the introductions and supports the partnership. “Ronald and Richard are a great example of how a befriending volunteer not only enhances the life of the person they’ve visiting, but can make a big difference to their own life too! Whilst there is a lot of loneliness across Norfolk and beyond, it doesn’t take a lot of time or effort to transform the situation - for both the volunteer and the person they visit.

Norfolk's canal included in national boating challenge

Restoration of a unique Norfolk canal has been so successful that it has been included in a national challenge for boat users.
Canoeists enjoying a stretch of the upper canal during a North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust Open Day.
Enthusiasts from all over England and Wales are set to navigate the upper section of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal in a bid to gain a new Inland Waterways Association (IWA) award.
The IWA, a charity which works to protect and restore the country's 6,500 miles of canals and rivers, has included a one-mile section, from Ebridge Mill pond to Bacton Wood lock, in its Silver Propellor challenge, aimed at encouraging members to explore some of the country's lesser-known waterways.
The 19th century canal is one of 20 destinations around the country suitable for portable craft such as canoes, kayaks and paddleboards which those taking part in the challenge must prove they have tackled in order to gain the Silver Propellor medal.

Ivan Cane, chairman of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust, hopes the challenge will help promote the canal beyond Norfolk. "The biggest reward for all our volunteers’ work in opening up this section of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal is to see boats using it. We are thrilled that our local Norfolk canal has been included in this national scheme," said Mr Cane.
Trust volunteers have been working to restore the upper canal with Laurie Ashton's Old Canal Company, which owns the waterway between Ebridge lock and Swafield. In January a successful trial re-watering was carried out on a stretch between Pigneys Wood and Bacton Wood lock which had been dry for at least half a century.

North Norfolk to host national Blue Flag awards ceremony
Blue Flag winners from around the country to be invited to Cromer The annual awards ceremony which sees Keep Britain Tidy hand out Blue Flags and Seaside Awards to local authorities will be held in Cromer in May.
Last year North Norfolk District Council had its most successful set of Blue Flag results when the district secured six flags – at East Runton, West Runton, Cromer, Mundesley, Sea Palling and Sheringham. The awards recognise the top tier of English beaches and are given out only to those sites that have the highest quality of water, facilities, environmental education and management, with superb levels of cleanliness and safety.
The awards will be hosted on Cromer Pier on 17 May. The suggestion that Cromer could host the event was made during last year’s Blue Flag ceremony, which was held in Bournemouth. Cllr John Lee, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “The Blue Flag is the quality mark for our beaches and they mean that those visiting them can be sure that they are clean, safe and meet the highest environmental standards, as well as the tough international bathing water quality standards.
“I’m delighted that Cromer will host the Keep Britain Tidy awards event. Cllr Becky Palmer, Cabinet Member for Leisure & Culture, said “The fact that winners from around the country will visit Cromer is a reflection of the high standards delivered across North Norfolk’s beaches. Allison Ogden-Newton, Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive, said “Every year the launch of our Blue Flag and Seaside Awards is a chance to celebrate the fantastic beaches around our coastline that are so loved by locals and the millions of tourists who visit them each year.
Snow Day
A white calm greets the sunrise, a blanket of icy chill, Gardens looking beautiful as snow frames each window sill. Slowly the unusual chill stirs each sleepy head, And a cautious testing toe creeps out of every bed. Something feels different, something feels strange, It isn’t a normal morning, there’s been a funny change. The window reveals the reason why things are not quite right, A beautiful stretch of snow comes suddenly into sight. Panic starts to set in about schools, work and travel, The day that was planned out starts to rapidly unravel. Then a realisation happens, there’s nothing you can do, A calm sets upon you as you start to think it through. Smiles and excitement for an occurrence that is so rare, It doesn’t even matter that a bitter chill fills the air. Run out with a sledge, leave your wifi and screens behind, Fill a day with laughter and unwind your busy mind. Families pushed together making unexpected fun, A chance to make new memories as we sledge, build and run. Being given the gift of time is such a rare occurrence, Enjoy it while it lasts, it could be a while before a recurrence! Laura London
“We are delighted to be holding this year’s celebration event in Cromer and would like to thank North Norfolk District Council for hosting it.

Hedgehog Haven
The mild spell of weather saw all the hedgehogs in the outside huts awake from hibernation. It's good to know they have all survived.
With this in mind, Luna and Happy were collected by their finders to be released into an enclosed area, where they have provided nest boxes and food, prior to releasing into the wild.
Henrietta arrived on 15 March. Luckily her finders knew she was small (350grms) and, with another cold spell coming, she would be struggling. She is eating well & should not have to be in care to long.

Community Action Norfolk awarded Quality Mark Plus by County Council
part of our work - but in the end it is this local community activity that makes a real difference and it couldn’t be delivered without the thousands of volunteer hours people put in to making their communities a better place to live and work.”
Dereham-based charity Community Action Norfolk (CAN) has been awarded the Quality Mark Plus from Norfolk County Council’s ‘In Good Company’ campaign, tackling loneliness across the county. The award recognises CAN’s contribution to strategic leadership in the voluntary and charitable sector across the county, including setting up and supporting twenty Good Neighbour Schemes, working as a key partner with other organisations in combating social isolation and loneliness, and supporting carers in Norfolk.
“It doesn’t matter how big or small your initiative is, we can all do something to help combat loneliness and isolation and it can make a huge difference to people’s lives.”
Alison Thomas, Deputy Leader of Norfolk County Council said: “Loneliness has become an epidemic Councillor Alison Thomas, Deputy Leader, Norfolk County across the whole country and here in Norfolk. A Grove Miscellany
A few reminiscences of 75 years at The Grove, by John Graveling.
Part 26 1978 to 2005 Continued
As well as Carl Tuckett we had two other cricketers stay with us. One was an Australian, Tye Rayfield who was with us for two years. I got on well with Tye. He would work exceptionally hard in the garden and what he did, he did well. He was also like that with his cricket; full of enthusiasm and hard work. We hired a mini digger which he drove and cleared a patch of overgrown waste ground. Unfortunately I thought I would level out a part of it and nearly turned over the machine. I put my hand out onto a shed alongside so as to steady myself but the cab trapped a finger against the side of the shed and made a bit of a mess of it. It resulted in a visit to the Norfolk and Norwich University

Hospital in an ambulance. The ambulance men insisted on wheeling me in on a stretcher even though I told them that I had only hurt my finger and was quite capable of walking. As we went along one of the corridors we passed under a notice that said “to the mortuary” “Where are you taking me I asked?” with some concern. I was then inspected by a young blonde doctor who informed me that she did not deal with fingers but specialised in breast reconstruction. I explained to her that I did not think that was why I had been admitted! She did not ask me to take off my shirt. She would get Paddy to deal with me. Paddy was a youngish Irish doctor (I knew he was Irish because he was dressed in green!) who got round to me about mid night; turned on classic FM; and proceeded. I did tell him that the finger was 65 years old and had spent most of its useful life so he could remove it if necessary. But no, he patched it up and made a good job of it finishing about 1.30 a.m. I was kept in overnight and there was Paddy on his rounds at 8.00 a.m in the morning. I was full of admiration for him.
Following on from the success of the most recent national CoMA concert (Contemporary Music for All) at West Runton Church, in spite of the March snow drifts, Cantamus will be performing a new repertoire of music ‘From the Bavarian Highlands’ by Sir Edward Elgar, one of the greatest and best known English composers, and ‘Folk-Song Settings’ by Percy Grainger, an Australian composer who played a prominent role in the revival of interest in British folk music in the early years of the 20th century. Percy Grainger’s folk song settings, mostly from Lincolnshire, are some of the most sensitive and beautiful ever written. Grainger collected with wax-cylinder recording equipment, and always credited the singers in published copies. The English Folk Song and Dance Society initially refused to house this material, and it was deposited in the Library of Congress in

Vernon and Wendy Paine were an interesting couple who had been coming along regularly for some years, and often two or three times a year, to stay in the Bungalow. They only live in Suffolk. Wendy was born in 1920 and is to all intents blind. Every morning at 7.45 am she takes her white stick and slowly makes her way round to the front door. She then collects the key to the swimming pool and goes for a swim. Quite remarkable. Vernon will not go with her. She is a lovely lady. He is a mine of information on how to do things.
The other amusing part about this was 6 weeks later when I went to have two pins removed from the finger. I had been trying to work out how they would be removed as they were some 3 inches long. There was the blonde breast reconstructor again. She had on her desk the biggest pair of pliers that there were in Jewsons tool bank. She then closed them over the pins and pulled but without success. I said to her “you put your foot against your desk and brace yourself and I will pull backwards. This we did and out came the pins with a plop! To my amazement I did not feel a thing.

We also had another Carl – from South Africa. He was some 6ft 8in tall and had the reputation of being able to bowl really fast although he never did achieve much at Cromer. Somehow he didn’t get on too well with the Cromer team and could not gell with the youngsters. We never did get particularly close to him, which was a shame.
Washington USA. Fortunately, copies are now held by the British Library in London.
The folksong elements in Elgar’s 'From the Bavarian Highlands’ are made up, but no less enchanting. Later on Elgar’s celebration of England, although held to be somewhat jingoistic, is actually melancholic and equivocal. We must remember that Elgar’s genius was first recognised in Germany, perhaps in the Bavarian Highlands! Cantamus began as a community choir at St Margaret’s church in Thorpe Market, part of a strong musical tradition that has flourished in the church for a number of years. Under the Directorship of Philip Adams the choir has successfully been expanding its repertoire and scope. Those wishing to join the choir are welcome to get in touch. We rehearse on Thursday evenings 7.30pm - 9.30pm. Music for the Parade and the following Celebration Service will be provided by Stalham Brass Band under the direction of Tim Thirst.
Five hundred young people with their parents and grandparents will be visiting Stalham, providing a unique and excellent publicity opportunity for scouting, with parents, grandparents, supporters and Scout Leaders from across Norfolk attending, not just from the Broads area but from, Norwich, North Norfolk and the West of the County.
Flag Bearers will form a Guard of Honour either side of the entrance to the playing field where the St George’s Day Service and Celebration will be held and will include the renewal of Scout Promises by all members and presentations.
The formal Salute will be taken by North East Norfolk District Commissioner, Paul Henriksen who is delighted to be accompanied on the dais by Dr Duncan Edmonds, a retired GP and current Chairman of Stalham Town Council, together with Mrs Betty
We are very grateful to both Stalham Academy (Junior) School’s Head Teacher, Mr G. Russell, who has given permission for our young people to gather there prior to commencing the Parade and to the Head of Stalham High School, Mr M Budgett for his kind permission to use the High School’s Playing Field for our Service and Celebration.

Oundle’s Rusty Orchestra heads for Norfolk . . . with cannons in hand for the 1812!
The 45-strong ‘Rusty Players of Oundle’ are set to give two free of charge concerts over the final weekend of the spring holiday on Saturday 14 April at 4.30pm in Cromer Parish Church and on Sunday 15 April at 4pm in Blakeney Village Hall.
Both concerts will feature a ‘Desert Island Discs’ selection of 8 classical favourites, ending with a bang from the 1812 Overture – the audience are invited to bring their own cannons, but paper bags will be provided! Both concerts will be followed by a generous provision of afternoon tea. The orchestra was originally formed following a visit to Oundle by the celebrated author Alexander McCall-Smith, who plays with our Scottish cousin, ‘The Really Terrible Orchestra’, based in Edinburgh. The Rusty Players was founded by Oundle resident, and abandoned clarinet player, Chris Gill, and it has grown steadily to its present size with all departments filled.
The orchestra itself has no auditions : if you have an instrument, an open mind and a music stand then you are in. We work our way through a vast selection of music from Brahms to Bernstein. Our members range from young 20 somethings to 70 somethings – some are retired, others use the orchestra as an escape from the rigours of professional lives, and a few as time-out from looking after children! Once a fortnight the daily routine is suspended while we indulge in an hour and a half of music making.
This Spring, under the baton of our experienced conductor, Vince Davy, we are treating the good citizens of North Norfolk to our very own interpretation of ‘Desert Island Discs’. For two afternoons in Cromer and Blakeney, we are offering a varied programme, from the tranquil ‘Sleepy Lagoon’ to the rousing ‘Dam Busters’ March’. We will then ‘Sail By’ a few more classics before ending with the ever popular 1812 Overture! SPOILER ALERT….. Our tour bus is quite simply too cramped to accommodate our in-house cannons so we will teach you to improvise with the aid of a brown paper bag!
Please do bring friends and family to support us. To show our appreciation for your support, afternoon tea will be served after the concert courtesy of the members of the orchestra. We promise you a musical experience like no other. Further details on www.rustyplayersoundle.org.uk

Returning for its 5th year, the festival that has been dubbed ‘North Norfolk’s friendliest event’, is returning home to the Village of Trunch, the place where it all started. Trunchonbury opens at 12pm on Friday 24 August and closes at 10pm on Sunday 26 August.
Tucked away in a pretty paddock, the theme of this year’s festival is the ‘Wizard of Oz’ and the Trunchonbury team really do believe ‘There Is No Place Like Home’.
Geared very much towards entertainment for the whole family, the festival has plenty for everyone. On the main stage are some of the finest bands from around the region and a few showstoppers from further afield. Headlining on Friday are Backbeat Soundsystem, an 8 piece Funk Reggae outfit from Cornwall. On Saturday, the stage will once again bounce along to the Jive crafted stylings of Mr Bruce and DJ Chucks AKA The Correspondents and Sunday night will see the return of one of the Trunchonbury family as local musician Wayne Beauchamp and Those Deadbeat Cats bring the festival to a final crescendo. Definitely not to be missed there are plans afoot to get the whole arena dancing to the bands classic take on traditional and not so classic Rock‘n’Roll. Elsewhere in the festival you will find the JR’s Children’s field with a huge array of events taking place throughout the day and into the early evening. Story-telling, crafting, creepy crawlies, discos and tons more for toddlers upwards. There’s even an area for the really tiny ones to enjoy themselves, all within sight of the main stage, so you won’t miss any of the bands as your young ones play.
The Disco Shed is back for miniscule discos, ‘Blakeys’ the Bus that is really a Bar will be open for business every day and there’s a wide selection of food stalls in the onsite village that cater for even the pickiest of eaters. You’ll even be able to get a morning Bacon Butty with a cup of tea from stall in the campsite. In the Acoustic tent some unbelievably talented acts will once again grace the stage and on Sunday, the mighty BBC Introducing will stage a takeover, bringing yet more unmissable talent to the field. Headlining this year are incredible Fairgreen Ceilidh Band on Friday, the blindingly good Swing Caravan on Saturday and the frenzy that is the Spanish guitars of De Fuego on Sunday. And this year, we are introducing the Busk Stop. Situated just outside the main gate it will be a chance to hear some
of the bands who have play in the acoustic stage, and maybe even some from the main stage, as they return to their busking roots. As with last year, you will also find within the tent the Real Ale and Cider Bar, guaranteed to make you feel like you are down at your local watching the best band that has ever played there.
The Performing Arts Stage once again bring you everything from dance workshops and comedy to drum lessons and recycled art. Frank Morris brings his unique, vibrant magical art to the festival and The Norwich Swing Dance Collective will have your twirling around the tent. Keep an eye out for the timetable near the tent so that you don’t miss a thing. In the evening the tent transforms into the Dance Tent with some of the Fattest, Funkiest DJ’s we’ve ever booked! Disco, Motown, Soul, and the Cheesiest of Happy House are amongst the genres that provide the perfect playlist to finish the day, there’s no need to stop dancing when the bands finish, just get yourself over to the tent!
Also returning to Trunchonbury will be the Healing fields with a raft of Holistic Healers on hand to sooth away aches and pains and the Vets, for all your pet related questions, There will be stalls in our market and the funfair is on sight with traditional rides as well as Snowy Mountain and an inflatable slide. On Sunday we will encourage all the men to don a dress again for ladies day and ladies, this year it’s all about hats and hair for you. We can’t wait to show you all what we have been working on, so make sure you grab your early bird ticket as the offer runs out at the end of April. www.trunchonburyfestival/tickets All enquiries: fi.trunchonbury@outlook.com Trunchonbury are very proud to say that our sponsors for 2018 are Norfolk Cleaning Group, JR’s at Rossi Leisure, Kerrys, Persimmons Homes, Broads Tours and Toll Barn Vets.

Noninvasive Face Lifting
“I don’t want a facelift, but can’t you just tighten up some of this saggy skin a little? It is a question asked in aesthetic practices around the world. With new advances in technology and treatment protocols, answers are shifting from a tentative “maybe to a qualified “yes.
“My patients love that they can have a treatment in the morning and attend a social function in the evening with no trace of having had a medical procedure—just nicer looking skin. Says Dr Sanjay Gheyi, Medical Director and Laser Surgeon at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic.
Gravity wins out over time and with facial volume loss, untreated skin begins to sag and lose its elasticity. Advancements in technology have made it possible to tighten skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and sagging without undergoing surgery. “This precision contributes to both safety and effectiveness, and because this is accomplished without damaging the superficial layers of skin, patients experience no down time. Not only do we help wrinkling, it also decreases pore size, brings out a better texture, and a better appearance to the skin. Unlike lasers, it can be used on all skin colours, even very dark skin.
“Very elderly patients with severe sagging and wrinkles are, in general, suboptimal candidates for the modest to moderate improvement possible with noninvasive tightening devices, says Dr. Gheyi. “Younger to middle-aged patients with early laxity and wrinkles are better candidates. However skin condition can be a better indicator than age. “If the skin is in good condition, even older patients will show visible improvement, he says.
We use radiofrequency and ultrasound waves for no-downtime rejuvenation treatment, which stimulates the fibroblasts to produce more collagen. Patients love the treatments because they are comfortable

without pain medication or numbing creams. With this technique, patients see some instant improvement with increased collagen regeneration and skin firmness that becomes visible over the next 3 to 4 months and continues for up to 12 months.

Langham Dome
Along with many other organisations in Norfolk the Dome will be joining in the celebrations of the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the Royal Air Force on 1 April 1918. We plan to support RAF Marham’s Force Development and the Kings Lynn Air Cadets in their RAF 100 Heritage Trails around WW2 Norfolk airfields and took our mobile display to Sheringham’s Little Theatre when they celebrated the Anniversary with showings of both the ‘Battle of Britain’ and ‘Dam Busters’ movies on the founding day, 1 April.
We plan to exhibit at the Veterans’ Day at the RAF Bircham Newton Heritage Centre on 19 May - particularly relevant given that Langham started as a satellite airfield for Bircham Newton in 1940, and in addition to it being the centenary of the birth of the Royal Air Force, 2018 will also be the 100th anniversary of Clothing for Town & Country by the birth of our parent Station.

We have also been given a full size replica Spitfire by the Royal Air Force Museum at Hendon which we hope to have mounted on a plinth outside the Dome in time for 16 September, albeit we still have further work to do on mounting plans etc.

Nuclear Room and new Tornado Cockpit go on show at Radar Museum for new season
A restored Nuclear War Reporting Room, a Tornado Cockpit and a German WWII aircraft canon are among the exciting new attractions at the RAF Air Defence Radar Museum as it opens for RAF 100 Anniversary season.
The popular RAF Radar Museum, near Horning in The Broads, opened on Saturday 24 March for the 2018 season. The once top secret radar establishment occupies the site of the world’s longest continuously operating radar station and is the biggest museum in North Norfolk. The museum has doubled its opening times and will now be open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday through to the end of the autumn half term at the beginning of November.
New this season is the restored Nuclear Reporting Cell, which tells the story of how the base was used in the Cold War to warn and track a nuclear attack and fallout if one occurred. The Nuclear Reporting Cell was formerly staffed by the Royal Observer Corp (ROC) and will have giga counters and fall out protective suits on display. It will include information on warning times of attack and monitoring and surveillance. It will also have information on the Dooms Day Clock used to measure the likely risk of a worldwide nuclear catastrophe.
Also recently acquired is the German Dornier 217 canon retrieved from the Dornier which was shot down by a crew from 68 Fighter Squadron, based at Coltishall, on the night of 30 July 1942 over Salthouse Marshes. A Tornado Cockpit joins the two other cockpits this season and will be housed with the Jaguar cockpit in the ‘hanger room’. The Tornado saw active service in the first Gulf War and the aircraft’s full history will form part of the display. Steps will enable visitors to look inside the cockpit and also to access the rear of the cockpit to
experience the view that the co-pilot would have. The museum will be celebrating the centenary of the RAF which was formed on 1 April 1918. The museum will have a timeline showing the important milestones in the RAF and Radar and the base’s own history. The museum will also have a number of special activities throughout the year to celebrate and commemorate the anniversary. The museum will have 3 special exhibitions this year, building on the success of its Soviet era art exhibition last autumn, which brought lots of first time visitors to the museum, especially women and children.
Over the winter the museum has been busy doubling the size of its reception and shop area. This has enabled the museum to sell some exciting and unique new gift ranges and second-hand books. A new disabled access ramp has also been installed so that everyone can now use the same entrance.
Museum Manager, Gregory Hayman said ‘The museum has added another room to its existing 20 rooms meaning that we can have more exciting and interesting exhibits on display from our collection of over 10,000 items. We believe that we have things of interest here for everyone, from those who served in the forces to people who want to know about the part radar played in the Battle of Britain and terrifying reality of the Cold War and the threat of nuclear destruction.”
The museum has also improved its offer to schools, producing learning journeys and materials that will feed into more parts of the school curriculum.
Says Gregory ‘The role that the museum plays in developing our offer as a provider of education materials is important in encouraging young people to think about careers in science and technology.”
The museum is open from 10am - 5pm from Saturday 24 March and in addition to the regular open days, is also open on Easter Bank Holiday Monday and the two May bank holiday Mondays as well as the summer one.

Moving On
An empty room in an empty house, The furniture’s all packed and gone. I’m checking that nothing’s been left behind, That no one left anything on. We’ve lived here since our children were born, Now they’ve grown and all flown the nest. There’s no reason to stay in a house of this size, But to leave breaks my heart, I confess. The children are married and moved to new homes, As they all have young kids of their own. It makes sense to downsize for the rest of our lives, I try hard to be brave and not moan. Standing alone in the silence, Memories swirl around in my mind. Flashes of scenes full of laughter and tears At least memories can’t be left behind! I blink back my tears and look round once again, You can’t ever go back, so move on. The future now beckons, so goodbye to the past. The door shuts on a life that has gone! Frances Wraight

Local producer triumphs for the third year at World Marmalade Awards
quality and unrivalled taste.
It was a proud day for more than one Norfolk producer this year, though. Both the Norfolk Saffron Marmalade and the King Harry Marmalade are made using ingredients from Norfolk Saffron who are based on the North Norfolk Coast.
Happisburgh-based Ollands Farm Foods is celebrating after scooping a clutch of awards at the World’s Original Marmalade Awards, for the fourth year running.
This year, they won two Gold awards for their Seville and Whisky Marmalade and their Single Malt Marmalade. They also won two Bronze awards for their King Harry Marmalade and their Norfolk Saffron Marmalade.
Owner at Ollands, Mary Ann Stuart is thrilled “We’re really proud that three of the award winners this year are new to our range. The Single Malt Marmalade, the King Harry Marmalade and the Norfolk Saffron Marmalade are the first three products in our new Connoisseur Collection. It’s fantastic that they’ve had such a positive reception.”
All of the marmalades faced stiff competition from across the globe at the awards which attracted over 2,700 entries this year from more than 30 countries. Ollands’ marmalades have been recognised as among the best for several years now. They’re all made by hand in small batches with a focus on
Easter Fun
Children from Worstead Pre-school went on an exciting Easter Egg Hunt last month. They found clues and had to build a word – then they joined the Easter Fair to receive an Easter Egg and took part in an Easter Story and Sing song for their families, including many solos. It all finished off with a ‘tea party’. If you would like your child to be added to Worstead Pre-school’s waiting list for September 2018 or January 2019 please telephone Karla 01692 535692 or fill out an application form online at www.worsteadpreschool.co.uk.
Mary Ann explains more “We wanted our new collection of marmalades to be extra special. Saffron is the epitome of a luxury ingredient that happens to work really well with citrus! Being able to work with another local producer was an absolute bonus.”
The King Harry Marmalade gets its name from Norfolk Saffron’s King Harry Liqueur – a luscious orange and saffron liqueur. Mary Ann has been selling it, along with the other award-winners, at local markets for a couple of months and feedback has been fantastic. The Seville and Whisky Marmalade which has been part of the range for several years now remains a firm favourite – it won Silver in the 2017 awards. So, what’s next for Ollands Farm Foods? Owners of the business (L-R) Kim Holt and Mary Ann Stuart
“Watch out for more fabulous new flavours being added to the new Connoisseur Collection over the coming months! It takes a lot of hard work to develop a new recipe, but we have some exciting ideas in the pipeline which we can’t wait to share.”

Aylsham Dodgeball Tournament
Aylsham High School offers the Edexcel Level 2 Higher Project Course as an option subject.
Last year’s group looked at the possible legacies of hosting a sporting event and planned, organise and led a dodgeball festival for the Aylsham Cluster year 6 primary school pupils.
This year, 6 students from year 9 and 10 decided to work as a group to further extend this idea. They focussed their thoughts onto one of the legacies highlighted the previous year, which was helping year 6 primary school students in their transition experience to Aylsham High School. The project class have been conducting on-line research from educational publications about transition and have been questioning High School staff and students who already help in school transition activities. During the year, they helped to lead sporting team challenges at a year 6 induction day and helped officiate at a North Norfolk primary school swimming gala.
They planned and led dodgeball training sessions in each of the cluster primary schools, helping the year 6s to improve in their dodgeball skills. These were well organised and they were able to adapt their sessions to suit the size of school hall, the number of students in a class and the ability of the students. The High School students were also able to purchase 3 dodgeballs for each cluster primary schools.
Then on Tuesday 6 March, after many meetings and much preparation, they hosted the Aylsham Cluster year 6 dodgeball tournament with 80 students from 6 primary schools attending. The teams competed in a round robin tournament. Additional sports leaders from the GCSE Physical Education class helped to officiate each of the games, ensuring that the games ran smoothly. The standard of play was exceptional.
The winning teams this year were in 1st place Colby School, in 2nd place Aldborough and in 3rd place Erpingham. Each team took away medals, trophies and certificates.
It is now hoped that this tournament will become an annual event, adding to the many activities provided by the Aylsham Schools in order to help year 6 students feel confident about their move to year 7.
Spring Fair Success in Hillington
The Norfolk Hospice annual Spring Fair took place on Saturday 24tMarch. It provided supporters of the Hillington based charity with opportunity look around the Hospice and talk to members of the team. Over £2,100 was raised at the event which was extremely well attended. There was a fantastic mixture of local craft stalls, a delicious BBQ, plenty of homemade cakes and an extremely popular tombola.
Dusk til Dawn Falconry was also in attendance, providing people with the opportunity to view and hold owls. There was also a stand selling plants grown at the Hospice by patients and the bereavement gardening group.

Ski team wins silver in Italy
A school ski team from Gresham’s in Holt recently took part in the IAPS Ski Championships in Passo del Tonale, Italy and achieved 2nd place in their age category.
This was the first time the school has entered this event and the pupils who took part were Percy Dyter and Teddy Dyter from Melton Constable, Freddie Browne and Frederick Temple from Holt.
However, disaster struck on the second day of the event with Freddie Browne sadly injuring his leg. This meant that the team was reduced to three and they would have to achieve clean times to qualify for a medal. The winning teams are calculated by taking the fastest three
