District Council-nominated building site supervisor wins coveted award Martin Weavers has won the regional round of the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Site Supervisor of the Year Award after being nominated by North Norfolk District Council. Martin works for Norfolk Homes and was recognised for his outstanding work as site supervisor during work for 145 dwellings in Roughton Road, Cromer in partnership with NNDC.
Cllr Sue Arnold Cabinet Member for planning policy said “Our building team was incredibly impressed by Martin- the way he understood the facets of the job, the potential and actual challenges and his consideration of the bigger picture. His positive and can-do attitude was noted by everyone who worked with him. This is a well-deserved award and we can only wish Martin the very best of luck as he now goes through to the national awards later this year.”
The LABC East Anglia Building Excellence Award for Site Supervisor of the Year recognises an individual who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to ensure an outstanding working relationship with the local authority. Included in the criteria for the award there must be evidence of build quality and control on site; evidence of technical awareness, good communication and management of safety; and evidence of particular issues or problems resolved.
Martin received his award at a ceremony in Cambridge in June and will now go through to the national awards in London which will be held at The Westminster Park Plaza on 28 November 2016. Another NNDC-nominated project, Church Farm Barn, Ingham was a finalist in the regional Best Change of Use of an Existing

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station
Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers were called into action by the sounding of their pagers at 3.04pm on Sunday 10 July.
The Coastguards had reports from the public that there were two jet-skies 2 miles out to sea off Happisburgh Church, which had not moved for some time.
There were two runners up each receiving £95 with 12 out of 21 points - they were Richard Bell from Bedford and Tom Garwood from Cromer.
Jamie Edghill, Volunteer Fund Raiser For EAAA, would like to thank Bullen's Joinery Central Road, Cromer who sponsored this competition.
The new competition for 2016/17 season is well under way and at the moment it is looking to beat last season’s number of entries. Our photos show the winners being presented with their cheques and a cheque for £620 being presented to Holly Noon from EAAA.
Happisburgh Atlantic Lifeboat ‘Joan Mary’ launched at 3.14pm with Tim Grimmer at the helm and Tony Phenix and Charlotte Siely as crew, arriving on scene at 3.24pm, where they found a fishing boat and rib three miles off the coast with diving flags flying. No one was found onboard either boat so the lifeboat quickly checked the area, found nothing so stood off and awaited the divers to return to the surface. At 3.55pm six divers returned to the surface and returned to the boats. The lifeboat crew then went alongside to check that all was well and everyone was accounted for. Advice was then given before the lifeboat returned to station, arriving at 4.05pm. The boat was recovered and refuelled and ready for service by 4.30pm. Happisburgh Community Safety Team would like to give some advice to divers :
• Always have someone on the boat who is capable of operating the boat and radio in the event of a diver getting into difficulty and needing help. If any of the divers had come to the surface in difficulty today then there would have been no-one to get help. • Between 2010 and 2013, there were 51 fatalities in UK waters. Find out more RLNI.org/respect the water, BSAC.com and PADI.com.
Earlier in the day, the lifeboat Crew had hosted a church service at Cart Gap Station, which was well attended and raised £42 to help the station save lives at sea.

Henry Blogg’s boat Q J and J returns to Cromer
After many years of restoration Henry Bloggs old fishing boat has returned to a prominent position overlooking the beach and within sight of the main lifeboat station.
The Q J and J is within the garden of Cromer Town Council and near to the bust of Henry Blogg. As a fitting tribute to one of the most famous lifeboat men in history, his fishing boat has been carefully restored so that future generations will be able to view it.
Unfortunately only half of the boat was in a fit enough condition to enable restoration but the remainder has been cut into smaller pieces and sold to raise money to enable the work to be carried out. After the Mayor Tim Adams appropriately named the boat with champagne, the present coxswain John Davies - the eighth generation of his family to serve with Cromer RNLI - was pictured alongside one of his predecessors, Henry Blogg who was a distant relative.

A Norfolk Lane
Wild flowers line the Norfolk lane They glisten with dewdrops after the rain. Red poppies in the wheat stand tall A pheasant gives a mating call. It’s so peaceful in the evening light A blackbird sings – such a delight. Wild roses in abundance grow High in the hedge and trailing low. They sway gently in the breeze Oh dear! Their pollen makes me sneeze. There’s a ‘buzzing’ by the old church wall Bees on the ivy are having a ball. A rabbit hops across my path His large white tail makes me laugh. A kestrel swoops to catch his prey But the little mouse scuttles away. There is much to see in this pretty lane That’s why I come here again and again.

More volunteers needed for Cromer and District Foodbank
Having opened two new distribution centres and met more than 1000 requests for food in the last financial year, the Cromer and District Foodbank is appealing for additional volunteers. “Volunteers are the life blood of our foodbank,” says Ella King, Project Manager. “There are vacancies in the warehouse, distribution, fundraising and general admin. They all offer a chance to make a real difference to the lives of local people in financial crisis.”
Founded in 2012, the foodbank now works with over 90 partner agencies to offer food, support and signposting across 200 square miles of North Norfolk.
“125 volunteers help us get emergency food to people in real need,” Ella says. “We want people to enjoy volunteering and there are lots of ways to get involved.”
Anyone who might be able to help is invited to contact Ella by email info@cromerdistrict.foodbank.org.uk or telephone 07826 376343.
include the new website http://fakenham.info/ and will be supported by new Facebook and Twitter social media platforms. This will be a year round six days a week service.
Richard Crook, from Active Fakenham which initiated the project, and has been helping to set it up said “This is a great opportunity for the town and we hope local groups, businesses and individuals will get behind it. We have set this up with a lot of goodwill and very little cash. We had a grant from that town Council’s Market Tolls fund for £2,500, which was a help. Active Fakenham has worked with Sweets ’n’ Things and Wensum.net to make this happen.”
Lisa Mallet, owner of Sweets ’n’ Things which is in the same building and has lent the room free of charge said, “I hope people will come along and have a look around. We are asking businesses and community groups that run activities in the town to give us posters and leaflets, as well as information for our social media and website. This is a free service and will be the “go to” place for information about Fakenham. We hope to develop a comprehensive list to show that things really do happen in Fakenham and to showcase our town.”

Thornage Hall provides supported living accommodation and work-based learning opportunities for adults with learning difficulties in the beautiful surroundings of a 70 acre biodynamic farm.
From 11.30am to 4pm on Sunday 4 September, this unique community will open its doors to the public, providing an opportunity for tenants to celebrate all that they have achieved through the year and for the general public to get a taste of their work.
A cooking demonstration by Richard Bainbridge of Benedict's restaurant and Thornage Hall's very own Kelby Light will showcase main ingredients tended and grown by tenants and work-based learners at Thornage Hall. All ingredients will be sourced from within a 20 mile radius of Thornage. The demonstration will take place between 2pm and 3pm and one lucky bidder will get the once in a lifetime chance to eat this fine three course meal prepared by the two chefs. Richard Bainbridge has been delighted to champion Thornage produce at his British Bistro in Norwich which opened in June last year; ‘The vegetables enjoy the finest provenance you could expect locally, combining a sound understanding of biodynamic principles with learning opportunities for the wider community’. Alison Hall, Director of Thornage Hall, is keen to share the work of the organisation with the wider community; ‘I am delighted to be opening the doors here at Thornage and allowing the wider community an opportunity to
Northrepps World War 1
Early evening on 30 June, Royal British Legion members, residents, and the Headmistress and a teacher from Northrepps Primary School, gathered together at the War Memorial at St Mary's Northrepps, joined by Dixie, a terrier representing all those dogs and horses that also lost their lives, to commemorate The Battle of the Somme. Jacob Millon played the Bagpipes, and Ted Briggs played the Last Post and Reveille. Northrepps Royal British Legion Chairman Eric Vickers read the Exhortation and Silent Tribute and the wreath was laid by Charity Sadler, a former Cromer Academy pupil, who had visited the War Graves earlier this year. Our Church Warden Janet Payne read the prayers. A lighted candle and our tribute were in place to greet the dawn on 1 July, 100 years on, remembering the 23 brave young men who left our village, their families and work, never to return, and also all their comrades. Our World War 1 is in the Church, and we are now going to add more information to this over the next few weeks, and if anyone needs to make any enquiries, for information etc, please contact Lorna on 01263 579633.

St Margaret's Thorpe Market Recycling
St Margaret’s Church, Thorpe Market has recycled since the 1980s. Starting with a paper bank in the stable (what a fire hazard in retrospect) loaded by a chain of volunteers, progressing to the current recycling centre on the church car park. Glass and paper are collected in more or less equal amounts totalling 20 tons each year. We are also happy to be hosting a Clothing Bank on behalf of the Salvation Army.
The reward to church funds is the Landfill Tax Rebate from the government amounting to over £50 a ton. It goes without saying that we welcome all donations of glass and papers. This is a vital part of the equation to help our small village church survive. We are very grateful to all who support this aspect of church-life. ‘The skips now on our car park have an appetite that's great, So pop your glass and papers in, we do appreciate. It helps us raise some money, to keep us from the ‘red’ So please, not in your wheelie bins, but in our skips instead! Dales Summer Berry Eton Mess
Method
by Matt Stacey, Dales Head Chef
It’s definitely the time of year when the British summer berries are well and truly in season. When the summer temperature sore, the temptation for a cool and refreshing summer treat kicks in. And here at the Dales we like to treat our guests to as simple but elegant Summer Berry Eton Mess.
All of the products above can be found in your local supermarket.... as well as a few cheats to help you along the way with your meringue. Matt Stacey, head chef at the Dales produces this yummy desert for his lucky visitors to the Dales Hotel. Summer Berry Eton Mess - no more need be said, except prepare and enjoy! Ingredients;
Meringue 4 x large egg whites at room temperature 115g caster sugar 115g icing sugar Chantilly Cream 200g Double cream 100g Sugar Tspn Vanilla Essence Fresh Summer Berries Berry Coulis Strawberries to garnish
1. Preheat the oven to fan 100C/ conventional 110C/gas 1⁄4. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper (meringue can stick on greaseproof paper and foil). 2. Tip the 4 large egg whites into a large clean mixing bowl (not plastic). Beat them on medium speed with an electric hand whisk until the mixture resembles a fluffy cloud and stands up in stiff peaks when the blades are lifted. 3. Now turn the speed up and start to add 115g caster sugar, a dessertspoonful at a time. Continue beating for 3-4 seconds between each addition. It’s important to add the sugar slowly at this stage as it helps prevent the meringue from weeping later. However, don’t over-beat. When ready, the mixture should be thick and glossy. 4. Sift one third of the 115g icing sugar over the mixture, then gently fold it in with a big metal spoon or rubber spatula. Continue to sift and fold in the remaining icing sugar a third at a time. Again, don’t over-mix. The mixture should now look smooth and billowy, almost like a snow drift. 5. Scoop up a heaped dessertspoonful of the mixture. Using another dessertspoon, ease it on to the baking sheet to make an oval shape (pic 3). Or just drop them in rough rounds, if you prefer. Bake for 1 1⁄2-1 3⁄4 hours in a fan oven, 1 1⁄4 hours in a conventional or gas oven, until the meringues sound crisp when tapped underneath and are a pale coffee colour. Leave to cool on the trays or a cooling rack. 6. In a bowl, beat the double cream with the sugar until you get fluffy stiff peaks on the 01263 824555 whisk 7. Next add the vanilla essence to your cream and give it a quick mix. 01263 838383 8. Then fold in the berry coulis and crushed meringue. Fold in a few chopped strawberries 9. Add some large pieces of meringue to 01263 579579 decorate

NORMAN LAMB; CRANMER HOUSE CUTS DEBATE
North Norfolk MP, Norman Lamb, is calling on local health chiefs to spell out how patients' needs will be met if Cranmer House in Fakenham is closed. Responding to a letter from Fakenham Town Council, Mr Lamb who was a government health minister for almost three years until May 2015, says he is concerned that closure would lead to delays in patients being discharged from hospital. Mr Lamb said "If locally funded NHS beds are lost at Cranmer House there is a real danger the whole facility will have to be closed. There is huge pressure on the Norfolk and Norwich hospital at the moment and if vital rehabilitation facilities like Cranmer House are lost there is a danger that this leads to delays in hospital discharges." Mr Lamb has written to local NHS managers asking to see their assessment of the impact of any bed losses at Cranmer House. "It is important for NHS managers to show that they have planned properly for the impact of the decisions they make. On the basis of the information I have received I cannot see the sense in closing these beds. Cranmer House is greatly valued. It would be tragic if this resulted in closure."

Chelsea Flowers for The Norfolk Hospice Tapping House
Volunteers and staff from The Norfolk Hospice recently met to plant up this year’s exhibits from the Chelsea Flower Show. Crane Garden Buildings of King’s Lynn kindly donated all of their plants from the flower show to the hospice.
Peter Mortin from Crane Garden Buildings spent the morning with the team, helping to plant up many of the 800 plants donated. It was extremely hard work as the temperature soared to 28 degrees but the teams persevered to ensure as many plants as possible were planted and watered. The Hospice hopes to plant the remaining plants over the next few weeks.
The aim of the garden is to enable patients and visitors to take a gentle walk around the gardens. Benches have been placed in shaded areas to allow time to relax and reflect.
Prestigious Green Flag award for three North Norfolk District Council green spaces
Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner Woods recognised again as among best open spaces in the UK Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood, near North Walsham, and Pretty Corner Woods, near Sheringham, have again been named amongst the best open spaces in the UK, winning the right to fly the prestigious Green Flag for 2016/17. It is the 12th year in a row that Holt Country Park, which, like the other two winners, is run by North Norfolk District Council, has earned a Green Flag for being welcoming, safe, clean and well-managed. Becky Palmer, NNDC Cabinet Member for
Lyndsay Carter, Chief Executive said “we cannot thank Peter and Crane Garden Buildings enough for their kind donation. A special thank you to Peter for spending so much time with us, both in the design of the garden, and physically helping to plant”. She also praised the volunteers for their commitment and time working in such hot temperatures.
Volunteer Gardeners Paul Davey (left) and Michael Moore (right)
The Hospice is always looking for volunteers to help care for the gardens, which cover the four and a half acre site in Hillington. If you would like to help please call Davina Clarke, Volunteer Co-ordinator on 01485 601700.
Leisure and Cultural Services, said “This is an incredible result. For Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner Woods to keep winning is testament to the hard work of our countryside rangers and the wealth of beautiful places that surround us in North Norfolk. "Our award-winning green spaces are a wonderful place for adults and children to experience the natural world. There are also events at all our Green Flag sites, so do take the opportunity to visit and take in these beautiful places.” In 2005, Holt Country Park was the first in Norfolk to win a Green Flag - an award that demands year-on-year improvement for the status to be retained. Holt Country Park was joined by Sadler’s Wood, just outside North Walsham, when it achieved a Green Flag in
2012, and then by Pretty Corner Woods the following year. Pretty Corner was awarded a Green Flag on its very first application, which is very rare and a clear acknowledgement of the excellent work that is being carried out by NNDC staff and dedicated local volunteers.
The three sites are among a record-breaking 1686 parks and green spaces that have been awarded with a prestigious Green Flag Award for 2016/2017.
The award, organised by Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

A Grove Miscellany
A few reminiscences of 75 years at The Grove, by John Graveling.
Part 6: Post WWII Part 2
At that time my young nephew Robert used to stay with us during the summer and he made up some foul yellowey green mixture and put it in a bottle with a label on it – “medicinal compound”. Father kidded on the Miss Panters that he knew just the medicine for all their problems and he handed the bottle over to them. Fortunately he had screwed the top on so hard that they could not undo it. I believe that they may have taken it away with them. We did not see them any more – but they were getting quite old. Another character who came on the scene was a tall thin man who always wore a long brown gabardine mackintosh. He would have been in his late 30’s. He never had anyone with him and just used to turn up looking for accommodation. He got dubbed “the lone ranger”, but he turned up again a few years later. In those days ensuite bathrooms had not come into vogue. With twenty or more guests plus our own family in The Grove and only two bathrooms there was quite a queue at bed time and then again in the morning. It was as well that we did not waste time and water having many baths. Of course each bedroom had guzunders which got well used during the nights. It was the chamber maids job to empty them in the morning! There was also what we called an outside toilet. It wasn’t really outside but you had to pass through a narrow passage open to the elements to reach it. It was reserved for family and staff. (Guests would never have found it) Father usually smoked a pipe but when he visited the outside toilet he would light up a cigarette. It acted as a macho perfume. For one summer we had a very large lady called Daisey as a cook. Father was in the outside toilet but had forgotten to lock the door. Daisey was taken short one morning and because of her size and the difficulty she had turning round she would back in. Well he said he was sitting there when suddenly this huge figure with apron, dress and petticoat came in backwards with sails aflowing and was about to sit down on him. I don’t know what he said, but he could be a bit gruff at times. We had quite a few different kinds of animals about the place. There were a variety of cows to supply milk for the guest house. With all the
14 | north norfolk post | august 2016
current regulations nowadays it wouldn’t be allowed but we never came to any harm. The only treatment the milk received was to pour it through a muslin cloth. After standing a few hours there was this thick layer of rich cream. Delicious on cornflakes. I never did much like milk though and at school we were supposed to drink a third pint bottle every day at break time. I hated it and made the excuse that because we had cows I had no need to drink it. Thank goodness. It was quite funny to watch father milking the cows. Cats would come round him and he would squirt milk straight into their mouths.
Nancy
would not. They slewed along the kerb stones and got wedged between the front and rear wheels of the lorry. We then could not go forward or back, and nor could the lorry. We had to unhook the trailer and get hold of a number of strong looking men who then proceeded to bounce the rear of the car on to the pavement and out from under the lorry. This all took a fair bit of time so we then had to drive like crazy to get to market in time to sell the calf. We just made it. While thinking of Fred Youngman he did prove to be a very useful help on one occasion. He was standing around in the garden one afternoon. Father was pruning the apple trees and as was usual smoking his pipe, his foot slipped and he came crashing to the floor. He must have been briefly stunned and his pipe was pushed way back into his throat. Fortunately Fred was able to pull it out and a few moments later all was well and pruning continued. I think it was when Harold Wilson was Prime Minister that there was a trial for a couple of years of not reverting to Greenwich Mean Time in the winter but instead retaining summer time all year round. In mid winter it didn’t get daylight until 9 o’clock. We had a Jersey cow called Nancy. Father did not like these dark mornings and he complained to the press that Nancy didn’t like them either. It got into the national papers that Nancy, the only cow in Cromer did not like being milked in the dark. As a result the time trial was stopped after two years.
One cow we had was due to calf. It had been out in the meadow where the grass was very long. When we brought it in we saw that it had indeed calved and a lovely little calf followed along behind. Some hours later we looked into the meadow and to our surprise saw this calf. Well how did that get there from the cowshed? We went down to the cowshed and, surprise, there was the calf. The cow had had twins! Obviously we were not able to keep the calves for very long. When I was a bit older and able to drive I had to take one to Norwich market on a Saturday morning. Father was at work on the railway. An elderly gent called Fred Youngman got into the habit of calling round and spending a lot time with us. He didn’t actually do anything. He must have been in his 70’s and had a gammy leg but he would come round and poke the ground with his stick, making what he thought were helpful comments. However he was a pleasant old boy and nice to have around. Fred decided to come with me to Norwich market. We loaded the calf in the car trailer and started off up Mill Rd. When I looked in the mirror there was the calf pushing its way out of the rear of the trailer and high tailing it down towards the hospital. I gave chase and managed to catch it and with Fred’s help we LTD LT D got it back into the trailer. There was no bypass to Aylsham in •ALL TYPES OF VEHICLES those days and the high Street through the middle was very •ALL PARTS REMOVED narrow. We were half way •PARTS FITTING SERVICE along when a large lorry came in the opposite direction. He was •QUALITY PART PART ART--WORN not inclined to reverse, and nor TYRES FITTED was I – it was not easy with a trailer on the back. The obvious answer was to drive on to the CORNISH WAY BUSINESS PARK PARK narrow pavement. The front NORTH WALSHAM wheels went on o.k. but the back 01692 400900 wheels, held back by the trailer

Keeping it in the Family
Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr
Looking after ones elderly, incapable or vulnerable family members is natural and has happened forever. Many would consider it outside the interference of the legal system. Being paid within the family has always taken place on an informal basis, especially where someone has given up work to look after a relative and needs money to live on whilst they do so.
These days ‘Family Care Payments’ (FCPs) or ‘gratuitous care payments’ are the formal terms for such arrangements. The Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) has increasingly been requiring Deputies to seek authorisation to such packages. Its approach in the past has been over-zealous. The OPG has recently published useful guidance in the form of a practice note setting out the legal framework and the OPG’s approach to such payments. This applies only to Court of Protection appointed Deputies under a Finance and Property Order. It does not yet apply to the same sort of arrangements made in other circumstances.
When family members provide informal care for an individual lacking mental-capacity, it may involve anything from small scale care or providing companionship, to full-time care. The kind of care arrangement that might justify a FCP includes situations where there would not normally be any formal contractual relationship between the person and the family member providing care, as that care is given out of their natural love and affection.
The new guidance explains the OPG’s position on FCPs that Deputies make to such family members who provide care. It defines the arrangements and sets out the Deputy’s authority to make payments; including factors to consider when agreeing and calculating such payments. The OPG considered that FCPs can be in the person’s best interests, providing the FCP is properly set up and managed. The care must be of a good standard and required by the person in question. Guidance is provided as to increases in payments and record keeping.
Another Glass Ceiling Shattered!
North Norfolk Photographic Society’s Annual Exhibition was held in July, ,this year in St Andrews’ Church Hall. This proved to be an excellent location - visitor numbers were well up on previous years and the spacious hall suited the show very well. On the evening of the first day of the Chairman Malcolm exhibition, 27 July, members held a social English with some of the evening when, as well as admiring each exhibits at the exhibition other’s pictures, certificates were awarded to those that had done well in competitions over the last year. A special part of the evening was the announcement of members who had come first, second and third taking all the competitions into account - the Photographers of the Year. Chairman Malcolm Edwards first awarded certificates to Michaela Bone and Karen Spence, who came second and third in the Novice category and then awarded a trophy to the winner of this group, Rob Palethorpe. Photographer of the Year winners (from left to right) But anyone who thought that photography was a hobby for men in anoraks got a Lizzie Wallis (3rd) Diana shock when ladies took first, second and Knight (2nd) and Liz Akers third places in the advanced section - an(winner - with trophy) other glass ceiling shattered! The trophy for first place went to Liz Akers, with Diana Knight and Lizzie Wallis taking second and third spots. Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month but after a summer break will resume on 21 September when Barry Freeman will talk about English Monochrome Landscapes. For further details please contact the club Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com.
Matters to be taken into account include: the care actually given, affordability, other contributions made to household upkeep, savings on the cost of commercial care and the overall family situation. Other family members should be consulted, wherever possible. Although not applicable to those with Lasting or Enduring Powers of Attorney (LPAs and EPAs), the note is useful to families making best-interests decisions in similar situations.
In the 2015 case of Re HNL Senior Judge Lush lifted reporting restrictions and set in motion the issue of this guidance. In that case he commended the family on the ‘exemplary care’ which was provided on a ‘significantly cheaper’ basis than commercial care. Previously, he had held that the rate paid should be no more than the going commercial care but with a 20% reduction, largely to reflect the fact that no income tax is payable on FCPs. Inflation-proofing was authorised in advance so as to reduce the cost of returning to Court for a review. It is good to see such a common-sense approach to an age-old situation.

Get set for summer with Animal Magic Dog Club Now that the warmer weather is finally here, we are all looking forward to enjoying the summer but please remember that dogs can suffer from the same problems that we do from over exposure to the sun. This includes dehydration, sunburn and heatstroke - which can be fatal.
Here are our Animal Magic top tips for a safe summer with your dog: • Don’t leave your dog in the car – even in the shade with windows open the temperature can soar turning your car into an oven very quickly. Remember - dogs die in hot cars. • Try to walk your dog in the cool of the morning or evening and if you really must walk at lunchtime choose a sheltered lane or wood. Never allow your dog to exercise excessively in hot weather. • Consider having your dog’s coat clipped for the summer, most breeds seem to really appreciate this. • Your dog will enjoy a shady spot to lie in but during the hottest part of the day they might be more comfortable indoors. • If your dog goes off their food try to feed them later in the evening when
it is cooler and you will usually find their appetite returns. • Make sure your dog always has a supply of clean drinking water. Always carry water with you on hot days, and give your dog frequent small amounts. • Most dogs enjoy a paddle, swim or game with the hosepipe. It’ll help them keep cool, but after fun in the water always dry their ears and under collars to avoid irritations. but most of all enjoy a fun and safe summer with your dog!
Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham is a fun, family orientated club offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs. For more information on the club and classes available please call Kathy on 01263 720730 or visit our web site www.animal-magix.co.uk

Whole Baked Mackerel
We’re well into the summer now and the garden is throwing fresh, beautiful produce at us at 100mph, almost too much to keep up with! The highlight as always are John’s magnificent new potatoes, a triumph of modern engineering, absolutely delicious with a nutty, smooth bouquet and a delicate yet overwhelming finish. Perfect with a little bit of salted butter (and a couple of Davies’ massive Cromer lobsters of course).
John once brought a whole pail in, only to find an hour later one of the kitchen porters hacking away at them with a potatoes peeler. After the explosion had subsided the poor KP received a tutorial in the simple art of rubbing the skins off the potato with nothing more than a gentle flourish of the right thumb. Pure magic. Do come in and see us soon for dinner – or afternoon tea, served from 2.30 – 4.30pm Monday to Saturday (booking essential!)
1 whole mackerel 1 lemon 100g new potatoes 50g chopped dill Splash white wine 50g butter
WINDOW & DOOR REPAIRS
Parsley Salt and pepper
Take the mackerel and snip off all the fins using a pair of scissors, leaving the head and tail on. Place in a piece of baking paper 30cm2 Finely chop the herbs and add on top of the fish, together with five slices of lemon. Add a slice of white wine, butter, salt and pepper. Place the samphire on top. Take each corner of the baking paper and fold into the middle, taking care that all the ingredients are covered. Wrap the whole parcel in tin foil and place on a baking tray. Cook in the oven on 180degC for 15-20 minutes. Serve with the delicious new potatoes!

Recently Asked Questions and Answers from the Clapham & Collinge Family Team
By Neale Grearson, Partner and Head of the Family Department
Q. How can I ensure I get my fair share in a divorce? A. Make sure you see a specialist family Solicitor who is part of Resolution. Obtaining a divorce settlement in the right terms is vital and it is important that you have the right person or people working with you. There is only one "bite of the cherry" so getting this right is very important. Q. How do I ensure my children get what I want them to get following my divorce? How do I protect what they're entitled to? A. When a divorce takes place the needs of children are a vital priority. The Family Court will take into account those needs but after a financial settlement is concluded it is left to individual parents to make sure they provide for the children and ensure they get what they want them to have following the divorce. Complications in particular arise when parents form new relationships and have children from that new relationship or marriage. The starting point is making a Will to have provision for your children. Also if investing money in property with another person (e.g. a new partner or new spouse) it is important to look at things like Declarations of Trust dealing with joint ownership as new relationships do not always work and that could mean that a new partner might be entitled to a share in property that you would want your children to have had. If you live with a new partner having a Cohabitation Agreement would be advisable but most importantly if you intend to remarry a Pre-Nuptial Agreement

could be essential. This could set out that you wish to "ring fence" any assets that you receive from your divorce that you wish to ensure your children benefit from and not your new spouse or his/her children or family. Q. Will I have to go to court to finalise my divorce? A. The procedure for an actual divorce is straightforward so long as the husband and wife agree and co-operate. It is now usually unnecessary to attend Court at all. However if there is a disagreement over finances or your children a Hearing might be necessary to deal with those aspects. Q. If I'm talking about my provisions in a divorce in a court, can it be publicly reported in a newspaper? A. It is very unusual for this to happen. Proceedings "in chambers" are private unless the Court allows reporting. Q. Why should I use a solicitor instead of an online divorce service? A. Most Solicitors will be able to give you a tailored service that is personalised to you and you have the reassurance of being able to ask questions. Many Solicitors will offer a fixed fee for an actual divorce which may be higher than the cost of an online divorce service but you need to decide what type of service you want and what is included (or not included) in the online divorce service.

Volunteers Needed
Grand Steam Gala
2nd, 3rd & 4th September 2016
After a record year in 2015, the North Norfolk Railway continues to power ahead in 2016. With a busy schedule of regular service trains and special events on the ever popular “Poppy Line”, the current year is shaping up to be another success.
Behind these achievements lies a dedicated and hard working team of volunteers who support a small number of permanent staff. Many of the Railways visitors are surprised when they learn that the vast majority of roles on the NNR are undertaken by volunteers. Like most heritage railways, the NNR relies heavily on its volunteers and with the continuing expansion of the railway, the need for volunteers to support it continues to grow.
There are a huge variety of roles available for volunteers from the more traditional ones such as engine driver, guard, signaller and station staff to less obvious but equally important ones such as stewarding the increasingly popular Railway Cottage at Holt - a cottage faithfully converted from an old railway carriage, dressed and furnished just as it would have been in the 1930s. The gardens at the stations are lovingly tendered by volunteers who manage to combine two interests in one. The NNR is constantly looking for new volunteers and whatever your aspirations or skills, we believe we can find a volunteer role in our team that you will find both rewarding and enjoyable. If you are interested in volunteering on the “Poppy Line”, please contact the NNR at enquiries@nnrailway.co.uk using the heading “Volunteering” in the subject field or telephone on 01263 820800.

North Walsham Air Cadet Gives First Aid
2110 (North Walsham) Squadron’s newest recruit rendered first aid recently. Sixteen year old Orson Ayers recently moved into the area and joined the Air Training Corps in April. He was formally enrolled on 23 June by the Squadron Padre, Rev Paul Cubitt. But one of the first things that new cadets do is to get a first aid qualification. Orson passed his Heartstart first aid course at the end of April. All staff and cadets do Heartstart as a minimum first aid qualification, many go on to take more advanced qualifications. Shortly after completing his Heartstart course Orson witnessed an elderly lady fall over in the Market Place, North Walsham. His recent first
aid training gave him the knowledge and confidence to go to her assistance. She had suffered a cut head, but otherwise did not seem badly injured. Orson helped to stem the bleeding and stayed with the lady Cadet Orson Ayers until an ambulance arrived. Flying Officer Alan Stevens, officer commanding 2110 Squadron said that he was very proud that a cadet had been able to help in this way. “It is a benefit to the whole community that there are young men and women around who are trained in at least basic first aid
Abstract London - A Major One-Man Exhibition by Trevor Woods at Gallery Plus, Wells-next-the-Sea Saturday 20 August – Sunday 4 September
This exhibition, featuring over 50 brand new paintings, has been inspired by the shapes and colours of London’s architecture and natural surroundings.
Following Trevor’s ‘Colours of Venice’ exhibition earlier this year, he has made the next logical step in this latest collection of paintings and has taken a far more abstract approach with his use of colour and technique, whilst retaining his own instantly-recognisable style.
Strictly speaking, the word ‘abstract’ means to separate or withdraw something from something else. It can be applied to art that is based on an object, figure, or landscape, where forms have been simplified or schematised to create an abstracted version of it. Trevor has always broken down his images into raw elements of shape and colour, but this collection goes one step further and thus the image becomes purely abstract.
In addition to these abstract paintings, a chance visit to Kew Gardens resulted in a rather unexpected source of inspiration and has prompted a series of botanical paintings, with the natural world offering its own
Another successful year for Holt Festival
This year’s Holt Festival continued to build on past successes with many of its events selling out. The week-long festival began with the announcement of the winner of the annual Holt Festival Art Prize. This year’s winner was Lara Cobden from Gressenhall. Her painting In The Enchanted Garden was chosen from 190 entries that had been whittled down to a shortlist of 30. Organiser James Glennie said ‘Lara’s winning work was amongst many strong entries but there can only be one winner. It is technically amazing and the reflections of the moonlit sky give a mysterious edge to an otherwise calm warmth’. As well as a cheque for £1500 Lara has the chance to have her work displayed at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts.

form of abstracted colour and shape. These Kew paintings will hang alongside the pure abstracts in a way to tantalise the mind in a gallery full to bursting with colour! Don’t miss it!
Trevor Woods is a popular artist based in Wells-next-the-Sea, North Norfolk. He has been painting professionally since 2004 and, with his wife Jo, owns Gallery Plus where his working studio is always open to visitors. His distinctive, graphic style has allowed him to develop the skill of breaking down views into their raw elements: clean lines, flat colours, and dark shadows. Each painting is just as much about what he leaves out as what he includes.
ABSTRACT LONDON opens with an all-day preview on Saturday 20th August from 10am – 5pm, when Trevor will be present to welcome you with a glass of Prosecco, and continues until Sunday 4th September. Open Monday - Saturday, 10am-5pm; plus Sundays 27th March and 3rd September, 11am-4pm.

Is your Tattoo stopping you from moving forward in life? Would you like to have it removed in a painless, scar less way with the latest technology? Look no further… the answer is right here…
In many parts of the world greater than 15% of adults have tattoos. It is estimated that 50% of those receiving tattoos will want to have them removed within 10 years of their application. Tattoos can have negative associations and can be a hindrance in obtaining certain jobs. Whatever the reason, the best technology for tattoo removal in now available.
Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic have announced the arrival of a new high powered laser.
“The last few years have been very exciting for us and we have continued to invest in training and education and to add new services to our treatment menu”, says practice manager Trish. “We already have 16 different lasers in addition to other state-of-the-art devices. Now we have added another Q-switched Nd-Yag laser ‘ the gold-standard tattoo removal laser’ which will help us remove most colours in tattoos, but also treat people with deeper pigmentation and sun spots”.
What methods of Tattoo Removal are available? We must stress that older methods of tattoo removal are now outdated and have been replaced by better technology. These methods included dermabrasion, chemical peels, destruction of tattoo ink by various forms of injectable substances. These methods used to remove the part of skin with the tattoo! The results were less than desirable due to unacceptable scarring and poor cosmetic outcome.
Why are Q switched Tattoo Removal lasers so good? Q switched lasers produce very high powered and short nanosecond one billionth of a second] pulses of light that shatter and disperse pigment particles without damaging the skin. Consequently ink particles are removed and surrounding skin is not damages. This dramatically reduces the risk of scarring.
Is the Laser Tattoo Removal treatment painful? We use a local anaesthetic to numb the skin so our patients do not find the treatment painful.
Is the Laser Tattoo Removal treatment permanent? Yes. Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS FP Cert. BCAAM, Medical Director and Laser Surgeon of Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic has many years experience with IPL and lasers. He specialises in ‘no downtime’ gentle laser facials to more invasive laser resurfacing procedures and ‘knifeless’ laser surgery for lumps, bumps and skin tags in addition to botox, dermal fillers and leg vein treatments.

Peter White is a member of the Cromer-based charity About with Friends, who support adults with learning disabilities.
Peter works in their Community Shop in Garden Street twice a week and attends social activities with the group. When he heard that they needed to replace their ageing minibus with a new one, Peter decided he wanted to do something for the organisation that supports him. He had already parachuted out of a plane to raise money for another charity but this time Peter chose to be strapped to the top wing of a biplane and fly over the Gloucestershire countryside.
Peter admits he was very nervous about making the wing walk and almost dropped out especially when the first date was cancelled due to a poor weather forecast. However, when the day came, Peter rose to the challenge and rose to the skies. Afterwards Peter joked that if he ever suggested wing-walking again he wanted someone to shoot him in the leg! His incredible effort has so far earned £1100 for About with Friends and sponsorship money is still coming in.

Classic Car Rally Supports About with Friends
Cromer based charity, About with Friends, have benefitted to the tune of £1250 by being the chosen charity for this year’s Charles Clarke Classic Car Rally. The event, which took place on Sunday 10 July, involved some 80 classic cars driving from the Goat Inn at Skeyton to the Cathedral in Norwich, where they were viewed by hundreds of visitors.
The Rally is in its 22nd year and was named for a car enthusiast who died in a boating accident in 1998. For the past eight years, it has been organised by Brian Monks with the help of his family and friends.
Brian is pictured presenting the cheque to About with Friends’ member Tony Edwards who acted as a marshal at the event. Other members and Brian’s family are also pictured. The rally was also a social activity for a group from the charity who enjoyed looking at such classic vehicles as a Stanley Steam carriage and an Austin Healey.

To compliment the photographic exhibition, on the Friday evening at 7pm in The Atrium Theatre, the renowned local historian and member of the archive group, Brian Hedge, will lead an audio/visual presentation of archive photographs and narrative on “North Walsham - The town our Parents Knew”. Tickets for this are £5 (available from Showcase Gallery in the Market Place) and the Cafe bar will be open from 6pm for you to share your own memories. The archive group is a non-profit organisation run by volunteers with the aim of collecting the town’s history and making it available for everybody. We do this via our lively Facebook group at www.facebook. com/groups/NorthWalshamArchive/ and via our dedicated website: www.northwalshamarchive.co.uk and you can contact us via either websites.
We are always interested in adding to the collection and do not keep originals, we just borrow them to scan so we can share them with the community and keep them safe for future generations. CEO Helen Dalton-Hare and Development Manager Steve Smith spoke at the opening and emphasised the need for more volunteers and gardening equipment to help the group develop. Helen also noted that they were looking for local ‘Weekend Quail-Sitters’ to check for some quails they would like to keep on the plot.
