Graham Pressman, skipper of Ella II and the trust's boating officer, said: "We launched these seasonal trips last year and they were very popular so early booking is advised.
"The trips will include a commentary on the canal and its wildlife. The boat is covered but not heated, so dress to suit the weather and bring along snacks and drinks for the journey. Dogs are welcome, as are private parties of up to 10 passengers."
Booking is essential telephone 07585 160772. Tickets cost £5 for adults and children. Ebridge Lock is on Happisburgh Road, just east of White Horse Common, North Walsham.

More accolades for the quality of North Norfolk’s coastal waters
Further boost for the district’s six award-winning Blue Flag beaches The fantastic quality of the bathing water around the North Norfolk coast has once again been officially recognised.
Earlier this year, the district was awarded Blue Flags for six of its beaches, and no district in England has more. The government has now informed North Norfolk District Council that the water off all six of those beaches – at Cromer, East Runton, Mundesley, Sea Palling, Sheringham and West Runton – is deemed to be “excellent”.
The classifications are based on data collected by the Environment Agency and will be officially in place for next year. It means the six beaches are well placed ahead of applications to renew their Blue Flag awards, with water quality one of the key measures under the Blue Flag scheme.
East Runton looking east
A spokesman for North Norfolk District Council said “This is great news, and confirms once again that this is one of the best seaside destinations in the country.
“The Blue Flag awards already show just clean and safe our beaches are, but these bathing-water ratings are the icing on the cake for us.”

EXHIBITION, THEATRE, FILM & CONCERT OPPORTUNITIES
Thorpe Market church has built up a reputation for hosting art and craft exhibitions, theatre performances, concerts and live bands when not in use for services.
The venue has an accessible car park, three tier staging with comfortable chairs, boards to hang work on, a kitchen and most importantly it is easy to heat. We are currently investing in a new hanging system for the church. The newest facility this church received funding for was a large film projector and screen in order to run a film club for the community. If you think you would like to volunteer to run this then do contact us.
We do not charge for the venue but there is a 20% commission on gross sales taken during your event. All proceeds go towards the upkeep of this historic church.
Key dates in the annual calendar are Snow Drop Sundays in February, when we open our doors to welcome up to 1400 visitors, who come to visit the churchyard for the Snow Drop experience, not to mention Thorpe Market’s famous spread of afternoon tea, coffee and cakes. Other key dates are bank holiday weekends, Norfolk Open Studios and Half Term breaks. The church has a new exhibition co-ordinator so if you would like to know more about the opportunity to use this venue please contact Katayoun on katayounpd@gmail.com or by phone 07944 731081 for further information. She will send out the terms and conditions for the use of the church as a venue.
This is an excellent time of year to be on the water with your local rowing club.
The next race will be for The Carrow Cup on 8 December in Norwich.
Originating in 1803, this is believed to be the oldest event in the country for fixed seat rowing boats and is quite a spectacle. Competitors are timed over a course which runs from Pulls Ferry, through the Riverside area, past the Norwich City Stadium and ends at Thorpe Rail Bridge. Club members will be crewing both Bluejacket and Hoi Larntan so it certainly will be a race worth watching. The next report will contain an account of how the Blakeney skiffs performed.
Why not come along and try skiff rowing? Socialise on the water or compete. The choice is entirely yours. You may sample three rows before deciding whether to join and no previous experience is necessary. If you are interested in the sheer enjoyment of rowing, look at the club web site at crablakeney.wordpress.com before contacting Tom on 01263761570. You can also follow club activities on Facebook.
Come and prepare for the Festive Season with Blakeney Rowing Club.

A Hare Through The Seasons will return to Holt Country Park in time for the Christmas Woodland Trail where children get to meet Father Christmas and learn about how animals are traditionally used in woodland management on 19 - 20 December.
Lepus left earlier to attend the Christmas Lights Switch On in his home town of North Walsham on the 24 November.

New Cabinet at NNDC A three-party Cabinet has been named by the new Leader of North Norfolk District Council. Cllr Sarah Butikofer, who was elected as Leader of North Norfolk District Council on Wednesday, said she was “honoured and excited to be the new Leader of North Norfolk District Council. In keeping with my commitment to work with unity, I am delighted to unveil my new crossparty Cabinet and look forward to us all working together. Every person on this Cabinet will be able to give their own views when we are discussing the topics of importance to the people of North Norfolk. The Christmas Tree We children clap our hands with glee as Dad brings in the Christmas tree. My goodness it is very tall, Dad says it must go in the hall. Dressed with tinsel and coloured lights, it’s going to be a lovely sight. Dad puts the golden star on top, he bought the biggest in the shop. It sparkles in the evening light, we gaze at it with sheer delight. Mum calls us through for tea, with a sigh we leave our tree and long now for Christmas day as round the tree we all will play. Further step forward for tennis in North Norfolk North Norfolk District Council approves funding for Community Sports Hub plan
A plan to build a state-of-the-art £3.4m indoor tennis centre for North Norfolk and to improve four other tennis facilities spread across the district has cleared a key hurdle.
Funding to build the Community Sports Hub, which would be built in Cromer in a partnership with the Lawn Tennis association (LTA), Cromer Academy and Cromer Lawn Tennis and Squash Association, was approved at a meeting of North Norfolk District Council’s Full Council.
The sports hub, which was approved by the Council last year and given planning approval in September, will include three indoor tennis courts, a 25-station gym, a social area and viewing gallery, and a space for fitness classes, social activities and meetings.
The four satellite tennis facilities are in North
Walsham, Fakenham with two in Wells. The plans aim to greatly increase active leisure participation, as part of the Council’s wider health and wellbeing offer, across the district.
It would allow for year round indoor tennis in the District, demand for which was identified in the council’s 2015 Indoor Sports Facility Strategy.
Indoor tennis courts historically existed in Cromer from early in the 20th century and this new facility will build on that tradition, but will be open to the public, in order to benefit all players in the area.
Following tender evaluation for the sports hub construction, Full Council agreed to fund the construction phase of the project, including an additional £118,000 for improved car parking and access through Cabbell Park and additional

Decision to grant planning permission for innovative coastal scheme
Sandscaping scheme will help protect Bacton Gas Terminal and neighbouring villages Photo shows how the coastline at Bacton and Walcott would look after Sandscaping A multi-million pound coast protection scheme passed an important hurdle yesterday after members of North Norfolk District Council’s Development Committee agreed to grant it planning permission.
The Sandscaping scheme will see up to 1.8 million cubic metres of sand placed on to the beaches covering a 5.7km length starting north west of Bacton Gas Terminal and ending to the south eastern extent of Walcott.
This would be made up of: • Approximately 1 million cubic metres in front of Bacton Gas Terminal • Between 0.5 and 0.8 million cubic metres in front of the villages of Bacton and Walcott. Estimated scheme costs are between £17 million and £22 million. The scheme is a joint venture between North Norfolk District Council, the Bacton Terminal Operators, the Environment Agency and a range of other contributors.
The project would create significantly bigger beaches, improved beach access and better protection from the sea for the gas terminal and the villages of Bacton and Walcott. Over time there could be benefits to other villages along the coastline.
Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said: “This is an essential piece of work to protect both our Norfolk villages and nationally important infrastructure. “It is an exciting project that will put North Norfolk on the map for leading the way in innovative technology solutions, tackling climate change on our doorstep.”
There are a range of other steps which need to be completed before the scheme can proceed, including the appointment of a construction contractor, finalisation of funding and a licence from the Marine Management Organisation (MMO).
As part of the project there has been a wide ranging public consultation, including drop in events in the summer of 2017 seeking feedback from the public.
demolition and drainage works. Extra funding of £228,000 was approved for the satellite facilities. This follows on from enabling works for the project being completed on the Cromer Academy site during the summer school holidays.
The formal award of the construction contract will be made as soon as the LTA funding of £505,000 is confirmed, in early December.
Property related matters with Cromer Tennis Club are still being agreed and will be the final requirement for the project to go ahead, with the sports hub due to open in summer 2019.
Authority, joined five other volunteers from around the UK and Ireland.
Bob said “how proud he was to take part on this memorable occasion”. Back at the station volunteers joined the village at Happisburgh Church for their Remembrance Sunday Service.

Subject to securing the necessary permissions and consents, works would likely take place over Spring and Summer 2019.

Normally you don't interfere with a nest with hoglets but when I had a telephone call three weeks ago about a nest, I made the decision to collect and bring them into care. Because it is so late in the year, the hoglets would not weigh enough to survive outside. What a good mum! Moca
Another litter of three who were found without a mum
There are five hoglets who now weigh approximately 200 gms each, so I have now separated them from mum and she is having a well-earned rest in an outside hut and the hoglets are housed inside, three in one hut and two in another. Our photo shows Moca who has come into care as his top spines have been cut off, possibly by a strimmer. The skin has not been broken but unfortunately the head injury trauma has left him blind so he will not be able to go completely back into the wild. Please check carefully for sleeping wildlife when trimming edges in the garden......... I currently have 57 hogs in care.

FAQs and Top Tips for First Time Buyers Conveyancing transactions can be particularly complicated and confusing, especially for first time buyers. However, we believe that buying a home for the first time should be more exciting than stressful. This is why our team offer the very best straightforward, friendly service and will guide you through the entire process to make sure your transaction goes through as smoothly and as quickly as possible. We hope that these frequently asked questions, that first time buyers are so often seeking the answers to, will provide you with the basics to put you at ease throughout the transaction.
Q. What are the steps of the conveyancing process for buying a property?
A Conveyancer should be instructed on acceptance of the Buyer’s offer. The Buyer arranges a survey on the property, and makes an application for a mortgage (if required). The Buyer’s Conveyancer confirms instructions by letter, setting out the terms of business and fixed fee costs. They will contact the seller’s Conveyancer to obtain the contract pack.
Once received, they will raise pre-contract enquiries, carry out the necessary searches and obtain a copy of the mortgage offer. The Sellers’s Conveyancer and seller answer pre-contract enquiries and return these to buyer’s Conveyancer, who will then review and reports to the buyer on the contents of the contract pack, pre-contract enquiries, the result of the searches and mortgage offer.
The buyer then considers this report and raises questions on anything they feel is unclear. When the buyer is happy to proceed, arrangements are made for contracts to be formally “exchanged”, legally committing both parties to the transaction. Upon exchange a completion date is agreed and this is the date that the balance of purchase monies will be sent to the seller’s solicitor and the buyer gets the keys.
Full details on www.thorpemarket.org.uk
Q. What additional tips would you give to first time buyers about to step onto the property ladder?
The biggest tip that we can give a first time buyer is to instruct a legal advisor they trust. As a first time buyer it is all new and potentially daunting, but the right Conveyancer will take the time to guide them through each step of the process. Your Conveyancer is also crucial when it comes to speeding up the process, flagging up potential problems and dealing with them quickly too. If you are looking to buy or sell your home, the Clapham & Collinge Client Relations team are on hand to provide you with a no obligation quote. Call today on 01692 660230 for our North Walsham office or 01263 823398 for our Sheringham office.

Q. How does a Solicitor or Conveyancer make the buying process easier for clients?
Picking the right legal advisor for you can make a huge difference, after all you are going to be dealing with each other a lot over the coming weeks. The right Solicitor or Conveyancer will guide you through the process step-by-step and advise you as to any potential issues that may arise as well as how these can be resolved. Q. What can first time buyers do to make the conveyancing process run more smoothly? There are a few things that buyers can do to help the process along:-
1. Prepare your finances If you need a mortgage to purchase your first home, we would recommend obtaining a mortgage in principle before putting in any offers. This way you will know how much you are eligible to borrow.
You should look closely at the quotation provided by your legal advisor so you know exactly how much you need in total to purchase the property, including Stamp Duty Land Tax and Land Registration Fees. There are bound to be times during the process when you’ll feel like there are constant demands for your cash. Be prepared that there will be lots of fees to pay for and you’ll need to have money available.
2. Fill in forms and other requests for information promptly and accurately The quicker you can respond to requests for information, the quicker your legal advisor will be able to move on to the next stage of the process. There are numerous formalities your legal advisor will have to follow, they will only ask you for information that is absolutely necessary.
3. Stay on top of the process There are a lot of elements that need to come together in the house-buying process and it can be easy to lose track of where you're up to. Keeping good communication going with your legal advisor and estate agents will help you stay on top of what can be a long and confusing process. If you have concerns do not stay silent, it is important to raise these with your legal advisor at the earliest opportunity.

Birding walk Holkham Park and Beach on 16 December 2018 10am – 3.30pm - Meet at Holkham Village car park TF 891 436 Approach Holkham from the A149. At the Victoria Hotel (NR23 1RG) turn south towards Holkham Hall. Continue along this road and turn right into the car park immediately before the Hall gates. Note: Bring a packed lunch! For most of the walk walking boots will be adequate but if we go to Holkham Bay, wellies are advised. Distance: about 5 miles but it depends on how far we have to walk for snow bunting and shore larks if they are present. We will explore the hall grounds and lake. At this time of year, the lake should have a good variety of wildfowl and cormorants. The mature parkland surrounding the hall and lake is good for tits, nuthatches, tree creepers, woodpeckers, red kites and other raptors are sometimes seen too.

After our packed lunch, we will walk north of the A149 to Lady Anne's Drive to look at the wintering flocks of geese and other wildfowl grazing on the fields and then if we have enough light we may walk either west into the pine woods to the first hide or into Holkham Bay depending on what birds are about. Could you bring the magic of reading to a child in your community?
Beanstalk is a national literacy charity that transforms children’s life chances by recruiting and supporting volunteers and placing them in local primary schools. These volunteers work with children who have either fallen behind with their reading, lack confidence, or struggle with their fluency, comprehension or vocabulary.
The charity is searching for members of the community along the North Norfolk coast who can spare a few hours a week helping children to become more confident readers. As a Beanstalk reading helper you will work with three children at a local primary school and spend 30 minutes with each child twice a week, during term-time, for at least one academic year. If you would like to become a Beanstalk reading helper in Norfolk, please visit the website at

Latest art exhibition opens at North Norfolk District Council HQ
Photographs are inspired by the beauty of Norfolk’s coastline.
North Norfolk District Council is proud to be hosting an exhibition by Norfolk photographer Paul Macro, with his work on display at its offices in Cromer.
The Seasonal Coast exhibition highlights the natural beauty of Norfolk’s coastline throughout the year.
“The face of Norfolk is not a portrait that remains in the same pose from January to December but is an ever-changing canvas of mood and expression – it’s unpredictable and irresistible,” said Paul.
“Norfolk’s bright tapestry of dark winter skies and rough seas, fiery sunsets and blood-red
poppy fields, pebbled beaches and wind-slapped greenery is there for us all to see, all year round.”
Paul, who was born and brought up in Norwich, added “Seaside holidays played an important part in my childhood. Several times a year, my family spent holidays and weekends in our caravan, where the beauty of Norfolk’s unspoiled beaches and wide skies provided the backdrop to our other world, where there was peace and contentment and sibling harmony.” All the prints are available to buy for £40, and Paul also has two Norfolk Coast Books and a range of 2019 calendars available via www.paulmacrolandscapes.com. Alternatively, call 07727 644092 or send an email to info@paulmacro.com
The producers of Cromer Pier Show have excelled yet again and assembled a dazzling cast to perform an eclectic blend of traditional and contemporary festive variety to celebrate the 14th Cromer Pier Christmas Show.
The show opens with an opening gala performance on Saturday 24 November and is sure to get you in the festive mood and signal the start of your family Christmas.
Norfolk funny man and all round entertainer Olly Day returns for his landmark tenth year. A brand new face to the theatre is sleight of hand magic, vaudevillian entertainer Mark James and, returning after a sensational summer season, is lead vocalist Harvey James.
Another new face to the theatre is lead vocalist classical soprano Fiona Jessica Wilson. Providing the glitz and glamour in abundance are the Christmas Show Dancers, choreographed, devised and directed by Di Cooke, with Dance Captain Gemma Foulkes taking the helm, returning for her sixth consecutive season. Gemma is joined by Emily Hardy, making a welcome return after a sensational summer season, and new to the theatre this season Becky Mulhern, Gemma Taylor, Jake Platten and Joan Lopez Santos, performing for the very first time in the UK.
Children from Marlene’s School of Dancing provide those heart melting moments.
BRETT WOWS THE CROWD AT BRISTON!
On Friday 16 November, top UK organist Brett Wales performed the last Briston Organ Show for 2018, when he brought along his amazing Wersi Sonic organ (a very expensive instrument indeed!) and thrilled the capacity crowd with such items as the catchy ‘A Banda’, the Toto classic ‘Africa’, Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘In A Persian Market’, ‘Duelling Banjos’ and excerpts from ‘Cavalleria Rusricana’ which delighted classical music fans.
Our large screen TV showed close-ups of his hands in action on the organ, and when he appeared after the interval in a Leopard-skin style suit, we all cheered and were left in no doubt that this amazing musician is a top showman too!
Proceeds from the refreshments and the raffle made over £200 for the Copeman Centre’s own funds, and our stall raising funds for our chosen charity, the excellent ORBIS FLYING EYE HOSPITAL made an additional £72.
To complete the magical scene, stunning bespoke costumes designed by Laura Whyte, hand painted scene sets by Ian Westbrook and 3D Creations and breathtaking lighting effects by Visual Elements. Taurus ♉ 20th April - 21st May Your career looks to be in the spotlight in early 2019 and promising new beginnings are on the horizon. These may include a chance to learn new skills and gain qualifications. This will require adjustments and effort, but should bring rewards and enjoyment.

Cancer ♋ 22nd June -22nd July New Year is a great time for resolutions and you may need to set out some ground rules when it comes to relating to others. Speaking to those close to you in a clear, straight forward manner will help you all know what to expect from each other and make life easier all round. Leo ♌ 22nd July- 21st August How about having a New Year clear out? Who knows, you may unearth some treasures amongst the junk. MP’s survey shows serious delays in local health services
The results of a survey conducted by North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb shows that 138 (30%) of North Norfolk-based respondents recently waited longer than a fortnight to get a GP appointment, and that 46 (69%) of those who called an ambulance waited over an hour in an emergency. In other shocking findings: • Of those who had to wait over an hour for an emergency ambulance, ten waited over five hours and two waited over ten hours; • 34 (63%) respondents referred to the Wellbeing service by their GP waited over a month to be seen, with three waiting for a year; • 48% of respondents are not confident in getting their health/mental health issues treated by the local NHS, though 52% are confident; • 28% (144) of respondents are not happy with local GP services (though 71% are). Mr Lamb said “I wanted to find out what North Norfolk residents thought of their local NHS services and the feedback was incredibly revealing, and worrying. Lots of constituents, even those who had
experienced poor service, got in touch to show their support for staff. Local GPs and NHS services are the backbone of the North Norfolk community, and my survey showed how appreciated they are by the people they serve.
“But we also need to spend resources more effectively, focusing much more on prevention of ill health and joining up health and care services to meet the needs of patients.”

“This is all avoidable. We are the sixth largest economy in the world. We should be capable of putting the health of its people at the forefront of our policy-making. There is a wide acceptance that the NHS and care services for elderly and disabled people need more resources – and polling shows that people are willing to pay a bit more tax so that we can guarantee that care will be there for loved ones when they need it.

“These results, however, also showed that staff are working under impossible strain which is having a direct effect on people’s experience and is particularly damaging to their health. No one should be left waiting for an ambulance when they need it urgently – that time can be the difference between life and death.
Christmas is coming! Soon it will be here. I’m still not prepared, despite having all year! You’d think I’d have got it all sorted by now, But I still haven’t finished, it’s endless, somehow! Mini face-lift surgery rises in popularity
Cosmetic medicine and surgery goes through trends. Whilst non-surgical options such as botox, fillers and lasers are very effective for early signs of facial ageing, they cannot tighten a lot of loose skin. A surgical face or neck-lift entails removing this excess skin. For natural looking results we do not need to over-tighten the face and neck. We can just tighten it a little and add some volume with fillers of fat transfer and use lasers to improve the skin. Such combination yields superior results and is much better than too much of fillers or surgery alone.
Why awake face-lift? Many cosmetic surgery patients do not want to go under general anaesthesia. Being under general anaesthesia can be associated with risks. Operations under general anaesthesia also tend to have prolonged bruising and recovery involved.
How do you perform face-lifts at the Coltishall Clinic? With our technique, the operation is performed under local anaesthesia with an awake patient. A special solution numbs the area to provide pain control and this lasts for 12-18 hours afterwards-reducing the need for painkillers.
it provides a volumetric 3-D face-lift. 5] Neck lift only- this can be performed through a tiny 1-inch incision in the neck crease. This is suitable for patients with neckbands. Men with turkey neck in particular may be interested in neck only lift where it can be combined with removal of excess skin.
Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS Medical Director at the Coltishall clinic has had advanced training in face and neck lifts in the USA and has adapted best practice and technological innovations. As the procedure is performed in the clinic purely under local anesthesia and not in a hospital, it offers the following advantages: A natural look . Quick recovery . Minimal complication risk . Minimal scars . No hair loss . Less cost . Less risk of infection.
With so many face and neck lift options on offer, along with a whole host of cutting edge non-surgical options, we are sure to have a solution to offer you. So why not give us a call on 01603 736487 or log on to the website at www.coltishallclinic.co.uk.
What types of facelifts do you offer at the Coltishall Clinic? Apart from a full range of non-surgical treatments we offer a variety of surgical options mentioned below. 1] One stitch facelift- this is our minimally invasive facelift. It is suitable for younger patients or for those who do not want a full face or neck lift but desire a subtle result at low cost. 2] Laser face-lift- this is an excellent option when the main consideration is excess fat in chin and jowls. Laser can melt these and also heats the surrounding tissue. This stimulates collagen formation and assists in skin and tissue tightening. 3] Mini face and neck lift- It is also known by various other names such as weekend or mini-facelift, S-lift, MACS lift or a facial lipo-lift. The skin is lifted, underlying layer is tightened and finally the skin is repositioned and closed with fine sutures. 4] 3-D facelift – this is a no knife facelift for patients who do not have lot of saggy skin but have lost volume from their face. We take fat from where patients don’t want it such as abdomen or thighs and transfer it to face where
Review of Polling Districts and Places
A consultation on changes to some voting arrangements in North Norfolk has opened and will run until the end of the year The locations of some polling district boundaries and some polling places in North Norfolk could change as part of a regular review which assesses the suitability of where people vote in elections.
But before those suggested changes can come into force, a public consultation led by North Norfolk District Council is being held to ask people what they think and whether they have comments or suggestions.
the polling station based on a range of factors including accessibility, more suitable new building, or cost • 10 propose minor changes to polling district boundaries (all in towns to reflect new district and parish ward boundaries) but with no changes to the location of polling stations for the majority of electors in those areas • 6 propose changes to polling district boundaries (all in towns to reflect the new district and parish ward boundaries) and alternative locations for polling stations based on a combination of the
Each local authority area is divided into polling districts, with one or more polling districts making up a district ward. A polling place is an area or building within a polling district in which a polling station is situated.
A separate process led by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England decided in 2017 that from the next North Norfolk District Council elections in May 2019, there would be 40 councillors representing North Norfolk across 32 wards instead of 48 councillors across 34 wards.
As part of the new Review of Polling Districts and Places, the vast majority (114 out of 138) of polling districts, places and stations in the District are not identified for any change. Of the remaining 24 polling districts, some changes are proposed, summarised as follows: • 8 propose no change to the polling district or polling place, but make alternative proposals for

All Saints Upper Sheringham Bell Project
At the meeting of the Upper Sheringham Parochial Church Council on Monday 12 November, it was unanimously agreed that we are now in a position to place the order with the bellhangers, Nicholson Engineering Ltd of Bridport, Dorset for the work to restore the bells at All Saints Church.
The bellhanger, Andrew Nicholson, has now agreed dates for the work which will start with the dismantling of the current installation and the removal of the bells to his works in Dorset in July 2019. If all goes to plan, the work will be completed to enable the bells to be rung for Remembrance and Christmas next year, which will be amazing!
The picture shows (l-r) the bellhanger (Andrew Nicholson), the project coordinator (Sue Morton) and the Rector (Fr Phil Blamire) testing the new gallery ringing floor. There will be a balustrade installed once the work is completed, but we didn’t want it to get in the way of the bells being taken in and out. We have so far raised just over £46,000 from grants and personal donations towards our total of £75,000. Please consider helping us out. All contributions no matter how large or small will be very gratefully received! Can you imagine a more exciting legacy than to be able to say “I helped those bells ring out”!
We have received (or been promised), and are very grateful for, the following grants: • North Norfolk Big Society Fund £10,000 • Norwich Diocesan Association of Ringers £5,000 • Ashton Charitable Trust £2,000 • Paul Bassham Charitable Trust £1,000 • Anne French Memorial Trust £500 • Allchurches Trust £1,750
There are several more grants in the pipeline, so we are keeping our fingers crossed! Once the work is complete, there will be an opportunity for EVERYONE to have a go at learning this fascinating hobby – you don’t need to be involved in the church, attend services or be a Christian. If you are interested, contact Sue (details below) and we will be delighted to give you a taster session! Perhaps your New Year Resolution is to take up a new hobby – how about bellringing?
How to donate:
If you would like to donate towards giving our six bells their voices back please send your donation to Sue Morton, 4 Linden Grove, Sheringham, NR26 8PD. Cheques payable to “Upper Sheringham PCC”. If you are able to gift aid your donation, please ask me for a gift aid form – 01263 826078 or suejmorton@gmail.com. A big thank you to those who have donated so far – we couldn’t do it without you! I’m just a little candle but I can shed a nice bright light over the Christmas tree and presents on this very special night. It is time to say ‘thank you’ for all the good things we have had and the help that has been given through the good times and the bad. Let the New Year be a peaceful one and nations all unite. These sessions run every Wednesday morning and are driven by our team of passionate dedicated volunteers and trained staff members. They offer a warm inviting environment for people to socialise, make new friends, share experiences and information whilst having fun! They tackle isolation in a gentle, inclusive environment. Free transport is also provided.
‘Over the last 4 years’ said Samantha ‘The Hub has engaged the local community, bought people together to share experiences and information and gain cognitive stimulation. It has given the local community a sense of purpose and belonging and helped those who would otherwise remain on their own an opportunity to socialise and have fun.’

WHAT THE DICKENS?!!
By Fiona Hewitt, Director Hayes + Storr
At this time of year, attention often turns to Charles Dickens, and anyone who has read a Dickens’ novel will be aware of how much he loved to poke fun at lawyers and legal proceedings. Many aspects of modern legal practice would be completely alien to Dickens – employment law, intellectual property law, health and safety legislation to name a few, but there are some areas of the law where procedures have, in some respects at least, changed much less over the last 180 years …..
Swear Words In The Pickwick Papers, a misunderstanding leads to the amiable but bumbling Mr Pickwick being sued. Dickens describes a scene at court, where a clerk is administering oaths: ‘…the oath being invariably administered, without any effort at punctuation, and usually in the following terms: “Take the book in your right hand this is your name and hand-writing you swear that the contents of this your affidavit are true so help you God a shilling you must get change I haven’t got it.”’ Although we now try to be a little more client-friendly in our approach, the wording described above will be familiar to anyone who has had to swear an oath for legal purposes. Clients often comment to us that the procedure seems rather archaic and strange. Certainly, it raises a few questions:
What is the purpose of an oath? An oath or affidavit is a document which needs to
be sworn before a solicitor or legal executive (Commissioner of Oaths). The document has to be sworn whilst holding a bible or other holy book. It is usually for documents used in Court, including probate oaths - the process of applying for a Grant of Probate, a legal document issued by the Court that proves an executor’s right to administer the estate of a deceased person. The idea behind confirming a document by means of an oath is that the person who swears to it is making a solemn promise that the contents are true, to the best of their knowledge and belief. It is the equivalent on paper of a witness in Court swearing to tell ‘the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth’. Lying on oath is taken more seriously by a court than an untrue statement made in other circumstances. What happens if you don’t want to swear on the Bible? Many people, whether or not they have any religious belief are prepared to swear on the Bible, accepting it as part of the procedure. However, some people object to the practice on religious grounds or for other reasons. In these circumstances, an ‘affirmation’ is perfectly acceptable, and the lawyer who is administering the oath will provide some slightly amended wording.
court official. You will need to repeat or read out the wording given to you by the lawyer which is not dissimilar to the wording described above by Dickens. The fee is currently £5, with an extra £2 for each ‘exhibit’ (document attached) to the statement. It’s a little more than a shilling, but still a token fee for this old-fashioned procedure and perhaps not too much for a chance to swear at a lawyer! This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice. If you would like further advice on this matter please contact Fiona on 01328 863231. If you require advice on any other legal matter call 01328 863231 or email law@hayes-storr.com.
What is the swearing procedure? An oath must be sworn in front of an independent lawyer/solicitor – not someone from the firm who has prepared the (excluding Court Fees) relevant document. It is also possible to swear an oath before an appointed

National Trust launches fundraising appeal to secure the future of Blickling’s nationally important library
An ambitious new conservation project to secure the long-term future of one of the most significant book collections in the country has been launched by the National Trust, and with it a fundraising appeal to support the work that’s needed. The £325,000 building project will see vital work get underway at Norfolk’s Blickling Estate, as part of a larger five year project to not only save the library, but bring it to life for visitors. The hall is home to one of the most significant country house libraries in England, with more than 12,500 volumes making up the largest and oldest book collection in the conservation charity’s care. As part of ongoing conservation work a number of risks to the books have been identified, including from mould and death watch beetle. The conservation project will see work take place that will ensure the library is fit for the future. Paul Coleman, the National Trust’s Project Manager, said “Historic buildings like Blickling bring multiple challenges with them over time and need continual care for the precious collections they hold, and the work we need to do in the library is about the long-term future of the books here.”
“It’s not unusual for issues such as leaks or pest damage to appear in places like

this, but without this essential work to stop them in their tracks, the potential damage to the collection would be irreversible. We know that a visit to the library is the highlight for many visitors to Blickling, so we’re confident that together we can take it into the next stage of its long history.” Work on the project is due to start in January. As well as repairing leaks, the conservation work will include creating the right environmental conditions for temperature and humidity that the collection needs.
The collection includes the oldest book cared for by the National Trust - the first Complete Bible to be printed in English – as well as first editions of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice and Emma. Librarian John Gandy has spent the last eight years cataloguing the collection. He said: “The library here at Blickling is absolutely magnificent – from medieval manuscripts all the way through to Jane Austen first editions. Some titles are unique to Blickling and with others there are only a small number of copies in the world, but the books are under threat, and we need to do something about it.” “One of the great highlights of my job here is working so closely with this very special collection and this project is all about taking an historic collection into the future so that we can share it with people for generations to come.”
Help East Anglian Air Ambulance keep families together this Christmas
East Anglian Air Ambulance launched their ‘Together This Christmas’ campaign last month. After saving the life of three-year-old Annabel earlier in the year, the charity has asked people to consider giving a little extra over the festive period to bring more patients like Annabel home to their families for Christmas.
On 9 February 2018 EAAA’s Anglia Two crew was tasked at 09.49 to a three-year-old girl named Annabel, who had sadly suffered a cardiac arrest at her pre-school. Pilots Olly Gates and Gav Blake flew the team of Dr Victor Inyang, Dr Jon Barratt and Critical Care Paramedic Chris Neil directly to her side, arriving just 17 minutes after receiving the call. Despite a successful resuscitation by the fantastic pre-school team, Annabel was deeply unconscious and her airway was compromised. The team gave her a general anaesthetic in order to protect her airway and breathing. It is incredibly rare to anaesthetise a young child outside of a hospital so the team carefully modified drug dosages based on her age and weight. Specialist paediatric airway equipment was prepared and checked. It took the team just sixteen minutes to complete the process. After gaining control of Annabel’s airway the crew made the decision to fly her to Addenbrooke’s. En route to hospital the team worked hard to stabilise her, but on the latter half of the journey Annabel deteriorated further and required intervention with specialist drugs.
They were met at the hospital by the specialist paediatric resuscitation team. At this point she sadly went into cardiac arrest for a further two hours. Despite all the odds and after receiving further expert care at the hospital Annabel made an incredible recovery. The chain of survival was perfectly formed that day. It was undoubtedly the quick response, professional skills and outstanding patient care by everyone
involved in a devastating situation that resulted in a lovely three-year-old girl being saved.
Given Annabel’s age and presentation, this mission was one of the most significant for the EAAA and the team, who said they were delighted to be able to meet Annabel and her family at the charity’s base and show her the helicopter she was flown in.
Chris Neil, Critical Care Paramedic at EAAA, said “On that day I was able to utilise all of my skills I have learnt in my 25 years working within prehospital emergency medicine. The job was truly career defining. It stretched my abilities, resilience and emotions and had the most amazing outcome. Meeting Annabel a few months later was a special moment and one I will always treasure.”
Rebecca and William, Annabel’s parents, said “As a parent you never want to hear that your child is in need of emergency medical attention. Our world was shattered when we learnt that our three-year-old was being air lifted to Addenbrooke’s. Thankfully the EAAA played a vital part in our daughter’s chain of survival. The expertise, compassion and care they have provided during and after that unforgettable day in February, has enabled us to put into
perspective how incredible and invaluable their service is. We are forever grateful.”
Little Annabel will be spending this Christmas together with her family, and this is all thanks to you, the fantastic communities who support the charity and keep them flying. If you would like to support EAAA and help them to keep more families together this Christmas please go to their dedicated Christmas campaign page www.justgiving.com/campaign/ EAAAchristmas2018.
You can read Annabel’s full story on the charity’s website www.eaaa.org.uk/stories or to find out more about the charity you can follow them on Facebook ‘East Anglian Air Ambulance and on Twitter as @EastAngliAirAmb.

Broadland Chess Club
Welcome to the latest news from BCC. The clocks have changed, Halloween and Guy Fawkes have been and gone - I hope that you all had a good time! Some of us may possibly already be thinking about what to buy for loved ones for Christmas. Have you considered a Paul Badger shows a group of chess set for example? There are several BCC Juniors different ones about, I am sure that you have all seen those that are ornately carved and yes very beautiful, I even have several in my house that are on display. There are also those that come in character form but did you know that you can only play ‘team chess’ with standard pieces on a traditional board? Some traditional sets are cheap and basic but they may start a hobby for life and a basis for strategic thought. Could be an extra stocking filler for a child that you know.
The picture above show a group of our youngsters from our Junior club engaged in matches and several of them will be taking part in the Junior Norfolk Championship taking place at Broadland High School in January. This is open to children under the age of 18 but does require the use of chess clocks although help will be available. For more information on this please contact Paul on paulerbadger@btinternet.com.

Aylsham Lightnings off to a flying start!
Aylsham Lightnings have won their first match of the season - beating near neighbours Broadland Swallows in the Norfolk Rapidplay Handicap Cup. Players played two games where they had to complete all their moves in 30 minutes. ECF (English Chess Federation) Rapidplay grades were then taken into consideration in determining the overall winners. This meant that the Lightnings only needed 3.5 out of 8 points to win. In the end, the Broadland team (Roy Hughes, Ken McEwan, Tony Arnold and Andy Jones) scored 4.5 points and the Aylsham team (Bruce Carman, Daniel Hedges, Rupert Martin and Bob Grindrod) scored the 3.5 points they needed. Aylsham now progress to the quarter-finals. Rupert Martin again performed particularly well for the Lightnings in winning both of his games.
In the league, Aylsham Chess Club teams have now completed 4 NCCA (Norfolk County Chess Association) fixtures. Aylsham Spitfires are top of Division 2 - after 3 wins and 1 draw. Rupert Martin and David Owen have perfect records for the Spitfires with both achieving 2 wins from 2 games. Aylsham Hurricanes are mid-table in Division 3 - after 1 win, 2 draws and 1 loss. Bob Grindrod has been top scorer for the Hurricanes with 2 wins from 2 games.
