Ofsted rates Paston Sixth Form College all ‘good’

Inspectors visited the College last month and published their report this month, giving it an overall rating of ‘good’, as well as ‘good’ in all the individual aspects that are assessed : exam results, teaching and learning, personal development, behaviour and welfare, and leadership and management. The inspection was based on the new, tougher inspection framework, which was introduced in September 2015. The Inspection found that, at Paston :

“All learners are well behaved, motivated and have a positive attitude to learning, in and outside of lessons.” “They treat each other and their teachers with respect and value greatly the high level of support and guidance provided by their teachers.”

“Learners benefit from teachers’ high levels of specialist skills and the passion they have for their subjects.” “The quality of learners’ work is high and at times outstanding.”

“Learners make very good progress in their lessons; as a result a high proportion of learners achieve their qualifications and their target grades.”

“A high proportion secure places in higher education, including at Russell Group universities, or gain employment when this is their intention.” The Report suggested the College would be ‘outstanding’ were it not for the “small number” of

4 | north norfolk post | february 2016

students without GCSE mathematics, where “too few learners improve their GCSE mathematics grade while at the college” and also because “not enough learners, particularly those on academic programmes, have sufficient access to work experience placements.”

In fact, the College was already working to address these areas with the appointment of a new GCSE mathematics specialist, who has already had a significant impact on results, and a collaboration with the careers specialist ‘Beacon East’ to improve students’ preparation for work. Principal Kevin Grieve said “This is an extremely pleasing Report which reflects the excellent results our students have achieved over an extended period of time. I am very proud of all the hard work put in by students and all the teaching and support staff at the College. I would also like to thank parents for their contribution and the support from everyone involved with the College. It is a great team effort.”

He also commented that “Ofsted have not only picked out areas of good and outstanding practice but provided us with other guidance to get even better in the future. We know we have a very good College here that is at the heart of the community, helping students achieve high grades and progressing on to great opportunities in HE and employment.”

The College is having an Open Morning on Saturday 6 February 2016 from 10am – 12.30pm. This will provide students and parents with an opportunity to find out more and apply for September 2016.

AGE CONCERN

Here at Age Concern North Norfolk we are trying to eradicate loneliness amongst the over 55s in our area and have been running a befriending service for 10 years now. We are funded by the National Lottery with an aim at doing just that.

But to help us achieve this goal we desperately need more volunteers to become befrienders. We currently have a long waiting list for people who would like a befriender and many, without more volunteers, will have to potentially wait for a long time to be matched with someone. We want that to change in 2016.

Please do something wonderful this New Year and give someone who is lonely back their life by lifting their moral and, for many, giving them a reason to go on living.

I did this before I became employed by our charity and, like so many of our wonderful existing volunteers, I got so much pleasure out of seeing another person being made so happy by a simple act, such as making a cup of tea and listening to their stories.

Your visit may last for an hour or two, once or twice a week, or fortnightly; whatever time you are free to give and that you and your new friend mutually agree upon. You may play games, reminisce, and help to read books or just have a good old chat over that aforementioned cuppa.

Having that someone you know and get along with in your life and the feeling you have as you look forward to seeing them can make the world of difference to a befriended person and the volunteer. It can be the difference between the befriended getting poorly and or falling ill and them having a happy, fulfilling quality of life. Made only all the more important this time of year as the cold days and dark nights can often bring the gloomy thoughts of loneliness to many.

If you would like to become a volunteer, then please contact us on the details below as you could be making a real difference to someone’s life in the year ahead.

We have quiz sheets, in conjunction with G.I.F.T (Good Intentions Fundraising Team), to test your little grey cells. Pick up a form from our Day Centre - it is only £1 to enter and you can enter anytime upto 28 February. Prizes available.

All Proceeds go towards Age Concern North Norfolk and the Grand Order of Water Rats Thank you Adam Administrator Age Concern North Norfolk 01263 823126 ageuknn.admin@xlninternet.co.uk

NEW PLAYGROUNDS FOR SHERINGHAM WOODFIELDS SCHOOL

Sheringham Woodfields School is going into the New Year with exciting plans to redevelop its play areas.

The existing school playgrounds are over 12 years old and showing signs of tiredness. Importantly, they are failing to meet the needs of all the pupils. However, adding items to the layout as it is now would present difficulties. As the school has funds and grants that have been accumulated over the past few years that must be used for capital expenditure, the decision has been made to bite the bullet and undertake this extensive project.

"In addition to the grant support we are receiving, we owe a debt of gratitude to businesses and groups in North Norfolk, who have donated money to us. I would especially like to thank the East of England Co-operative Society, Crayford and Abbs, the Sheringham Shantymen, Royal Cromer Golf Club and Sheringham Methodist Church all of which have supported us in our aim to give our pupils a fantastic play and learning experience," says Matthew Smith, Business Manager at Sheringham Woodfields School.

He goes on "We must also add to our list of staunch supporters, the Friends of Sheringham Woodfields School, who give freely of their time and have raised £8,000 for the project, and finally the school's own charity shop, Woodfields Den, which has contributed a mighty £20,000 to swell the coffers. Without the efforts of all these organisations and businesses, the project would be unable to go ahead. Thank you NORTH NORFOLK MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT EVENTS GROUP

everyone."

Playdale Playgrounds has been chosen to develop the project, which is scheduled to begin with the first stage development at the start of the Easter school holiday. The rest will be undertaken during the May half term and summer holiday, and be completed in time for the start of the new school year in September 2016. Once fully open, pupils will be able to enjoy a new and exciting playground with fun and challenges accessible to everyone. The different play areas will incorporate shade and shelter, water and sand play and many more activities for pupils in wheelchairs.

"We wanted to involve the whole school in the planning process, so we have taken steps to ask questions of both pupils and staff about colour schemes, equipment, the play value in the varying areas, and above all, whether we have missed anything vital," Matthew finishes by saying. "Everyone now has ownership of this very exciting project."

Friday 26 February at 7.45pm

This will be a fund-raising evening of fun and laughter - we hope! It will not be too serious and there will be small prizes for the winners and runners-up plus worst team prize!

We will also have a raffle. £2.50 per person including light refreshments. Any size of team welcome!

Do come along and support this worthwhile cause and have a fun night! For more details contact Diane Evans 01263 823889 or call in at the Robin Hood.

Why not make a night of it and book a table and enjoy a meal before the quiz!

History brought to life in the Nelson Room Pupils from North Walsham Junior School recently visited the Nelson Room at Paston Sixth Form College.

All of the pupils experienced some real hands on history when studying Nelson. Pupils spent time studying letters, paintings and a range of artifacts linked to Nelson. Their enthusiasm for the exercise was encouraged by the chance to win a Paston Bear. The three winners Teejay Baylis, Josie Fryer and Harvey Haysman, all collected the most information from the investigation of all the items in the historic Nelson Room.

Kevin Grieve, Principal at Paston, said “the pupils had a wonderful afternoon examining the historical documents associated with Nelson. It was brilliant to see their enthusiasm to learn and gain knowledge about Nelson. They produced some outstanding work and are a credit to their school”.

Masons help Cromer Charity back on the road

The Baring Lodge of Freemasons has presented Cromer-based charity About With Friends, a cheque for £525 to launch the fund to replace their fully-accessible minibus. About With Friends, who offer people with learning disabilities the chance to lead the lives they choose, run a range of services for people from the age of 8 upwards. This includes social activities, respite breaks, supported living, and their ground-breaking Workskills programme where adults with learning disabilities are supported in commercial work ventures.

The current minibus has clocked up more than 90,000 miles over the past six years and is due for replacement. As well as running staff, volunteers and members of the charity around,

it is also used in the community to pick up people for the lunch clubs that About With Friends run for the Over 55s and similar events. With a wheelchair lift on the back the minibus is a vital part of the charity’s fleet and will cost about £32,000 to replace so the gift from the Freemason’s is a very welcome start to the fund.

£1200 BOOST FOR CANAAN HOMELESS CENTRE

The Cannaan Homeless Centre in Sheringham is £1200 better off thanks to the fund-raising effort of Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club. The money represents a major portion of the annual Christmas Sleigh collection around Cromer, plus the income from a number of bric-a-brac sales. Evelyn Smith, the founder of the charity is seen here having received a cheque from Rotary President, Debz Conisbee. The charity started life in 1978 as the Canaan Christian Centre to provide a refuge for women fleeing from domestic violence and to give needy children the chance to enjoy a holiday by the sea. Since then, it has expanded its activities to help orphan children in Hungary, Romania, Nigeria and Brazil.

Baring Lodge now meets at Sheringham Masonic Centre but its roots are very much in Cromer. Founded in 1896 in the long gone Tuckers Hotel, the name Baring comes from the family who owned Cromer Hall for many years. The Lodge met in a succession of Cromer venues until 1986 when it moved to Sheringham. It has quietly been a part of the Cromer community and continues to support local and national charities, whilst maintaining its Masonic history and traditions.

The picture shows the Master of the Lodge, Roy Chadwick, accompanied by Richard Longley, Past Master presenting the cheque to Richard French, a Workskills member. Richard is wearing regalia (a Collar and Apron) borrowed from the Master. Also pictured are Workskills members Keara Dougan, Jonathan Chamberlen and Stuart Phillips

The centre at 21 Holt Road, Sheringham, which boasts excellent all round facilities with seven en-suite bedrooms, is used throughout the year by individuals, families and groups to rest and refuel their lives.

Laser hair removal just got better

Try the latest, fastest, painless and most effective hair removal laser at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic. With up to 30% off during February there is no reason not to!

According to the latest research in hair removal, women shave 11,540 times in their lifetime and men spend 3000 hours on their shaving routine. It is no surprise then that a large number of people are turning to a long lasting solution for unwanted hair.

At the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic, Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS FPCert BCAAM treats patients not only from Norfolk, but also surrounding counties and abroad. True to his philosophy of offering best treatments and technologies he has invested in the best technology for laser hair removal.

We see patients in all age groups, both sexes and gender reassignment cases. We all realise the physical impact of unwanted hair, but when we dig a bit deeper it is quite heart wrenching to hear some stories. Often there is lack of awareness of laser hair removal and how effective it is.

Coltishall Clinic now has not one, but five different lasers for hair removal. One laser cannot work best for everyone. Hence, we have

Fakenham Highfield Car Park

A height restriction barrier has been fitted to Highfield Road Car Park in Fakenham to stop lorries and buses using the car park and damaging the surface further.

Cllr John Rest, Cabinet Member for Assets at North Norfolk District Council said “The car park was never intended to be used by commercial and heavy goods vehicles and the surface has been badly damaged. We are facing severe financial pressure and we have to do all we can to keep the surface of the car park in a good condition for as long as possible.

The height barrier has been fixed at three metres and leaflets have been delivered to nearby residents and businesses to let people know.

decided to have a range of lasers to provide best results to our patients and clients. Says clinic manager Trish.

How do we choose your laser? - we consider your skin type, hair type and body area to treat and then decide which machine will work best for you. You do need to have a proper consultation for laser hair removal. We also see people who can have medical reasons for hair growth and further testing or issues may need to be considered.

What about the pain and speed! It is not painful; sensation is just like snap from a rubber band. A cool gel is used with IPL and cool spray with our laser, which is incredibly fast and allows us to treat a full back or lower or upper legs in less than 40 minutes. It is very safe and offers unmatched results. You can watch a video of this laser on our website.

A spectacle and fun Easter day out in Fakenham

Fakenham town centre is due to become a race track and venue for a series of fun and exciting events.

Easter Sunday, 27 March. will see Fakenham host its first Criterium Cycle races, a 5K running race and 1k fun run as parts of the town will be closed to traffic to create a one kilometre circuit. There will also be food, stalls and activities.

Richard Crook, Chairperson of Active Fakenham, which is putting on the event said, “For the last couple of years we have put on the Shopkeepers Olympics and Showcase Day, this year we are planning something a bit different. Criterium racing is an exciting spectacle where dozens of bikes lap closed roads in the town centre for a fixed period of time. The circuit will have up to 2k of barriers; the bikes follow a motor bike and have sophisticated electronic timers attached. As well as the bike races we are planning a large 5k running race with up to 250 runners and an Easter Fun Run where all children entering will earn the Easter egg they will be given at the end of their run or walk”.

Now is the time to book a place as the organisers expect to reach capacity and may not be able to take bookings on the day. The runs are for all ages and abilities (minimum age 11 for 5k), Day licences are available for the youth and category 4 cycle races and it is all free to spectators. Activities and stalls are available for clubs, businesses and organisations.

North Norfolk Photographic Society

North Norfolk Photographic Society welcomed Vic Hainsworth to judge their members’ digital photographs on 3 February.

Vic first caught the Photographic bug whilst serving in the forces in Aden in 1965. After leaving the Services, he was for over 20 years a professional wedding photographer, and has been a member of Colchester Photographic Society for over 40 years. In February 2013, he was elected to the Executive of the East Anglian Federation of Photographic Societies as Awards Officer of the Photographic Association of Great Britain, his role being to promote distinctions around East Anglia.

There were three competitions, the first being in the Novice section. Intended for new and inexperienced members, many of the images shown looked to be well better than novice material! There was no set subject, and the winner was Martyn Gould with an action photo ’Lone Swimmer’.

The ’Advanced’ members had two competi tions to enter - the first with a set subject ’Power’, which was interpreted in many ways. There was a light bulb, a vigorous canoeist, a steaming locomotive, and so on. This was won by Nick Akers with ‘Power to Go’ - the steaming loco.

Lastly, the Open Advanced group was won by Liz Akers - a lovely head shot of a young girl, beautifully lit and composed, entitled ‘Hayley‘.

Sheringham Museum Volunteers Remember Olive Edis Sixty years ago this month, Olive Edis, one of the most famous residents of Sheringham passed away at the age of 79. She died in London but her ashes were interred with her husband Cambridge academic Edwin Henry Galsworthy, a cousin of the novelist John Galsworthy, in a family plot in Sheringham cemetery.

local area, the Sheringham Museum Volunteers felt that it was important to remember the life of such an important woman in the history of the town and so spent a day tidying up the weeds that had grown over the grave and then placed a wreath and bunch of lilies in her memory. Prior to undertaking this work, they sought the permission of Sheringham Town Council, custodians of the cemetery, and tracked down one of the few living relatives.

On Saturday 27 February, the fabulous Royal Air Force Wyton Area Voluntary Band are coming to Hunstanton to give one of their highly entertaining concerts with all proceeds going to The Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House. The concert has been organised by Wing Commander (Rtd) Kevin Mackie, President of the Wyton Band (and its solo euphoniumist), in memory of his late father, Chris Mackie.

During his last illness, Chris and his family received unforgettable kindness and invaluable assistance from nurses of The Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House, for which reason his wife Mary and younger son Kevin have organised this concert, to show their appreciation for everything the hospice team did to help during those very sad days.

Many local people will remember Chris Mackie, who was well-known across Norfolk as a popular speaker and personality. He came to Heacham as an evacuee in 1944 and, having no real place to go back to, he came to regard the village as his home, with the Proctor/Raines family, who took him in, as his family. The feeling was mutual and they remained close from then on. After a long career in the Royal Air Force, Chris returned to Norfolk in the 1980s, firstly to live and work at Felbrigg Hall, near Cromer, and then as an accountant in Heacham. In the 1990s he had a long association with the Princess Theatre, and

Pinocchio and the Pirates! A hit with audiences Arts charity very pleased with their Christmas offering

Christmas was a very busy time for Arts North Norfolk following on from the busy Christmas Fayre to other events like the carol concert, but it was the Christmas pantomime that stole the show, selling out to a 95% capacity over the six performances. Rapport was built with its energetic pace, flowing audience engagement and its own interpretation of the big traditional elements.

Forty eight children and young people were involved in the show accompanied by professional adult actors and 24 volunteers helped support the show in many ways from backstage help to make-up and front of house duties. Arts North Norfolk’s own drama club and youth theatre took part in the show too and North Walsham Community Choir provided pre-recorded backing vocals for some of the songs. Dance for Fun, a local dance troupe for children based in Smallburgh provided the beautiful dance routines from ballet to disco.

Megan Howlett(15), who played Princess Jaelle, auditioned as part of the workshop programme with students of North Walsham High School. The role of Pinocchio was shared by Kyle Adams and Andrew Burrell who were both 11 years old.

The organisation’s Director, Joseph Ballard, had written and directed the show and also took part – in his first role as dame. “Playing dame is a huge responsibility and - dare I say it - Iam not the average mature age for a dame yet either so we explored how we could make Mama Gepetto engage with the audience in my own way. With 14 costume changes and our modern interpretations of the traditional pantomime routines, we had the audiences with us all along. I want to heartedly thank everyone involved in making the show a success.”

In response to the positive feedback for it sin-house productions, the organisation will be presenting an Easter Family Show of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Audience feedback included: “An excellent show - something for everyone from ballet to soul music and terrific gags.” (Mr Morley from Southrepps)

“We’re so lucky to have this energetic force in our town. All the actors were brilliant and my family and I enjoyed every bit of it – it made our Christmas!” (Mrs Casing from North Walsham).

Following on from the success of its first show in pantomime form in 2014 with Beauty and the Beast, Pinocchio was chosen as the key story. Pinocchio is not often performed as a pantomime and the original story is too complex for the Christmas season and family audiences so writer and director Joseph Ballard inserted pirates into the story as the villains - and also acted as a hook for engagement of many children.

The show was a key element of the Inspiring Our Town project, an Arts Council England supported programme of developing wider participation for the arts in North Norfolk.

Events coming up this spring include the Best of British Season with films and events, kicking off on 11 February with film Suffragette, which leads through to an Easter Fayre on 26 March and Shakespeare Day on 23 April. Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society are pleased to announce that Harry Castle has been appointed as the new Musical Director.

Probate Law

One of the most frequent situations I find in the contested probate law field is where there has been a second (or third) marriage and the husband or wife (or both) have children from their previous marriages. For whatever reason, the husband and wife prepare Wills, perhaps later in their lives, and exclude a child. It is remarkable how often this happens. You can understand how such a situation may arise. There are family disagreements and as the child grows up, becomes an adult and has their own life, they become distant and disconnected from their parent.

That child may have had the expectation all through their life that they would inherit money from mum or dad and it is not until the last Will and Testament is read that the child finds out that they are excluded. They are then looking for advice about what they can do next. When a client like this came to me recently, the first thing we did was examine the Will. As a specialist contested probate solicitor, I am looking to see if the Will might, for some reason, be invalid. Many are, particularly if they are DIY internet wills or prepared by an online Will Writer. It is easy to get the signing of a Will wrong and this is a way to show it is invalid. I consider the signature and the signatures of the witnesses.

I will also start to ask questions about the circumstances of the drafting of the Will and who was present , for example, was it the person who stands to benefit who acted as a witness. In this case, everything appeared to be in order and a Will prepared up by a solicitor is likely to be done correctly.

MARE AND FOAL RESCUED FROM HADDISCOE

Redwings Horse Sanctuary concerned for foal’s future

On Monday 11 January, Redwings’ Senior Field Officer Julie Harding attended a field near Haddiscoe following a call to the charity’s welfare line. On attending the site, a piebald cob mare was discovered with a very sickly foal at foot.

Requiring immediate veterinary attention and with the help of Redwings’ Senior Welfare Veterinary Surgeon Nic de Brauwere and RSPCA Inspector Ben Kirby, the foal was removed with the mare and taken to Redwings’ Reception Centre.

I also look to see whether there has been a possibility of undue influence, although this can be difficult to prove. It is possible to overturn a Will if it is clear it has been made under duress. Questions can then be asked about the capacity of the person. Did they understand what they were doing? Was there any dementia or depression?

In this case, all those issues seemed to be in order and the Will appeared to be valid. The next aspect to look at is whether there is an Inheritance Act claim. This is where the Will did not give reasonable financial provision to someone who might have expected it, for example, a spouse or partner or a child or dependant. A claim can be brought in those circumstances. In the case I was advising on, the child was now an adult and she was working and supporting herself comfortably. Unfortunately, there was not anything else she could do to challenge what seemed to her to be an unfair situation.

The lesson to draw from this? I think it is to talk to your family, be as open as possible about your Will and what you want to happen with your assets. It should not have been a surprise to this client and it was only after her father died that she discovered her ideas of what would be left to her were wrong. She, perhaps, could have been saved a lot of heartache if she had only known in advance, hard as that might have been at the time.

In other cases, we succeed in overturning wills or making Inheritance Act claims, but after the event it takes a lot of hard work and time to deal with such situations, which could be avoided.

At Clapham & Collinge we can provide you with all of the necessary information, support an d legal advice on Will disputes and how they can be resolved. If you require advice on Will disputes please contact Tammy Parnell on 01263 820468 or email ttp@clapham-collinge.co.uk . If you require advice on any other legal matter please contact Clapham & Collinge Solicitors on 01263 823398 or email info@clapham-collinge.co.uk

“It was essential that the foal was taken to a safe environment for treatment,” reflected Julie, “and we couldn’t have done this without nearby welfare charity Horse Rescue Fund who we called upon for help in transporting the horses to our Reception Centre.

“They helped us load the two relatively unhandled horses, drove them to our centre and even stayed to assist our vets in setting up the treatment for the horses. Their help with this urgent case was invaluable and we cannot thank them enough”.

Once at Redwings’ Reception Centre, Nic – together with Welfare Veterinary Surgeon Nicola Berryman – provided care to the mare and foal through the night. “We’re very concerned about this young foal and diagnosis

Shortthorn’s

for his current condition is underway,” commented Nic.

This case comes just months after a similar mare and foal rescue by Redwings late last year. In October 2015, the charity rescued a mare with a six-week-old foal at foot found on farmland near Harleston. The pair – named Star and Rocket by the Sanctuary – were both extremely thin and Star was in such a severe state of neglect that she sadly died less than two weeks after her rescue.

Investigations into this recent rescue are ongoing, but if you would like to help support Redwings’ care for this foal and his mother, you can donate by texting “HORS30 £5” to 70070 or visit www.redwings.org.uk.

Why English law is good

Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

Two recent but very different events have led me to write this article on how lucky we all are to have the English legal system. The first was, prosaically, a seminar on European succession law (in Norwich) and the other was reading an article on current problems with the Indian legal system (in India).

Let me start closest to home. The European Succession Regulations, which came in this August, and to which the UK has not signed up, allow a national of an EU state to choose the law which should govern the administration of their estate upon death. In addition to the forced-heirship rules, other foreign anomalies worth noting are: that marriage does not revoke a Will (including in Scotland, where the birth of a first child can do so); that in Italy lifetime gifts to children must be brought into account in distributing the estate upon death; and, that one can sign to forgo one’s inheritance (never straight-forward in fact and law, especially where some time has elapsed). Whereas one can request that English law applies to ones assets in other EU countries, because many civil law countries do not recognise trusts, seeking to apply an English Will containing a trust to EU assets may be complex and incur a double tax charge. So, what about India? Well, when the British left India in 1947, amongst the systems and structures that ‘we’ left behind was that of the English legal system. However, in the 69 years since then there has been much divergence. The legal principles remain but the Indian Courts and the implementation of the decisions, apparently, leave much to be desired. On the principle of ‘justice delayed is justice denied’ the Indian system would appear to be failing. It takes years for a case to be heard and the system has become unwieldy and inefficient. Nine judges sit on cases heard in their Supreme Court and all nine of them give a judgement. Such judgements, when published, are sometimes as long as 900 pages for a single case. As

cases take so long to be heard and even longer for the decisions to be enforced, there is a tendency for litigants to take matters into their own hands rather than wait any longer for justice to be delivered.

The English legal system is a high earner for the English economy. Litigants and companies from overseas come here to use our legal systems and our Courts. Rather than the codified rigid laws of Civil Law countries, we have the concept of ‘equity’, which combined with our law of trusts and flexibility in relation to Wills and property management, make our system highly desirable. Yes, there is much to improve here in England. Our legal system is creaking with antiquated IT in the Courts and the threat of closure of our some Courts (King’s Lynn, being our local cause célèbre). However, we should appreciate what we have: it could be infinitely worse.

Screen-next-the-Sea

Screen-next-the-Sea moved successfully into the new venue at Alderman Peel High School, Market Lane, Wells-next-the-Sea on 16 January with a live via satellite screening of ‘Les Pecheurs de Perles’ by Bizet from the Metropolitan Opera, New York. This was quickly followed by the first Monday night film of 2016 which was the hugely popular ‘Suffragette’. Two women in the audience had mothers who were involved in the suffragette movement and they were both impressed with the film, particularly as it included some archival news footage.

We are very grateful to the Headmaster and Governors of the school for their support as school venue is proving very flexible for everyone. We have people who love the balcony, others love sitting at the large round tables on the ground floor and yet others bring their own garden folding chairs and sit where they want! There was a record audience of 111 for the first Monday night screening.

We still run a bar, thanks to our tireless team of committee members, so

Hospital Friends Cup Dart Competition

On 8 November at Bernies, East Runton, a Dart Competition was held for the Cromer Community & Hospital Friends, organised by Shirley Davies and Cindy Dennis who are both Committee members of The Cromer Charity Dart League and the Cromer Community & Hospital Friends.

The format was Men’s and Ladies Singles playing for two silver perpetual cups and individual winner and runner up keepsake cups which were all sponsored by A G Brown Builders Ltd (Woodrow family, Cromer). The

beer, white and red wine, coffee, tea and herbals will be on offer as usual before the films as well as at the Live via Satellite events during the intervals.

The whole procedure has been a logistical challenge, not least the amazing projectionists team who have laboured many hours setting up the satellite dish, hearing loop system as well as the projector itself and integrating the whole system inside the school hall.

There are some interesting films, plays and operas and a Matthew Bourne ballet coming up in February so take a look at our website www.wells-cinema.com for details and tickets or phone 01328 710885

cups were presented by Mary Northway, Chairman, to Ladies winner, Cindy Dennis and runner up Naomi Davies, Mens winner David Armishaw and runner up Paul Terry.

Shirley Davies Friends Committee

Mary and Shirley thanked all who attended, the Sponsors, Bernies for the excellent hot buffet they provided, all who gave raffle prizes and Alex Hannah for publicity.

Following another successful Christmas raffle the Friends raised over £7,000 in 2015. The Dart Competition will be added to the ever growing list of annual fundraising events. The next event will be dinner at the Constantia Restaurant, East Runton on 18 March – watch this space for further details!
