Duncan Baker January Newsletter

Dear all, I would like to start by thanking all those who voted for me in the recent General Election. A 14,000-strong majority was a clear mandate from North Norfolk to get Brexit done, and to move forward with addressing the many important issues you talked to me about during the election campaign. I’m pleased to say that within weeks I’m doing just that. The EU Withdrawal Agreement has been passed and, on the 31st January, we will leave the European Union with the votes of the 58.9% in North Norfolk finally respected. Both locally and in Westminster, my team is taking shape. I’m proud to have a constituency office in North Walsham – where I have had so much support during the last year. Soon I will look forward to hosting regular surgeries around the constituency. North Norfolk will be my first priority. In these first few weeks I have hit the ground running, working hard on behalf of many constituents. You may have seen me asking questions in the House about improving our ambulance response times, protecting our farming community, the environment, and what the government is doing to help our High Streets. I have met with Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, to discuss the urgent issues surrounding ambulance response times, the need for improved facilities at Cromer Hospital (with additional mental health support), and met with local ambulance staff to discuss their concerns and learn how we might provide a more responsive ambulance service for this area. This is being followed up by meeting with the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital chiefs: I want to see our Accident & Emergency unit radically improved, which will benefit many North Norfolk residents. I have been made the Vice-Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on moving towards carbon Net Zero, and am meeting with ministers to urge them to help the farming community who are under serious threat, with some of their irrigation licences being revoked. Of course, every day, I’m helping many people with queries and issues, and am loving meeting incredible constituents all around North Norfolk who do so much for their communities. There is much to do, but I am enjoying representing you and trying to make our lives better in our wonderful North Norfolk home. I look forward to seeing you soon. Duncan Baker, Member of Parliament for North Norfolk

Last year the RAF Radar Museum in Neatishead had another very successful year. Not only did we celebrate being open for 25 years but we grew in volunteers . We are open 4 days a week (and each Bank Holiday Monday) and we need more volunteers to join our happy band of over 60 women and men who help keep us going. We are looking especially for people to help in our lovely cafe on a Saturday and as room guides. We seek volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life. Our current team has women and men ranging from 18 to 80. We can guarantee that you will have an enjoyable time and make new friends and you will be helping a charity to keep going and help us continue to provide an award-winning experience to our visitors. We offer our volunteers a friendly place to come to and we organise an annual trip and a Christmas lunch as a thank you for all your time, plus there are free teas and coffees always available in the crew room. Why not visit us and find out more? For more information telephone the Manager 01692 631485 or email curator@radarmuseum.co.uk

Cromer Hospital 2020 Cancer Unit Appeal

1 in 2 people will develop cancer in their lifetime. It is extremely likely that you or someone you care about has been or will be affected.

Currently, if you reside within North Norfolk and are suspected of having cancer, your diagnosis and treatment will take place at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. However, we are delighted to announce that March 2021 will mark the opening of the new North Norfolk Macmillan Centre at Cromer Hospital. Patients residing in the towns and villages across North Norfolk will then be able to avoid the numerous lengthy journeys to the NNUH, often while feeling unwell. They will have speedy access to first-class diagnosis and treatment of cancer closer to their home. The new services available will include Prostate Biopsy, Chemotherapy and Oncology. The new Centre will also provide 20,000 clinic, diagnostic and treatment visits per year. The building cost is being shared by NNUH and Macmillan Cancer Support. Nevertheless, further funding is still required to purchase the highly specialised equipment, furniture etc. at an estimated cost of £500,000. Cromer Community and Hospital Friends (CCAHF) have accepted the challenge of raising this money. The wonderful generosity of the public over the past year by fundraising and bequests to CCAHF has resulted in raising £150,000 towards our target. However, that leaves us with £350,000 still to raise in the next 12 months – a very ambitious figure for a small charity. We are certain that, with your enthusiastic assistance, we can work together and make this goal a reality. Please support the 2020 Cancer Unit Appeal in any way you can – by donating, fundraising, being sponsored etc. Every £1 raised is truly appreciated and will make an immense difference to cancer care in North Norfolk. WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2020? 20 20 ?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an info ormed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norfolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2020 to come and meet me fa ace to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

test the IPL procedure out on me to see how I’d react. Whilst I put on the black-out glasses, Dr Gheyi explained what IPL actually is. Intense pulsed light is a broadband light within the visible spectrum. To a lay person, it amounts to short sharp bursts of very, very bright light. No UVA or UVB is involved, and the treatment is utterly safe. The IPL laser machine is top spec – rather than one of the cheaper portable versions that beauty salons tend to use. The IPL laser machine began to hum into action and Dr Gheyi fiddled with various buttons to set it to deliver the correct duration of pulse, and strength of light energy for my skin. He then did a test run on the largest of the spots. The sensation was rather like an elastic bang twanging on one’s skin – not exactly painful, just a little strange. The area was a bit hot and tingly for a couple of hours afterwards but soon settled down. I was told to avoid sun for the next 48 hours, and to rebook for a follow-up session when treatment would commence in earnest! In the meantime, I could expect the age spot that had been zapped to possibly turn browner, before beginning to fade. At best, Dr Gheyi said the pigment might rise to the surface, and simply flake off. Two weeks later, by which time the spot had definitely faded, I turned up for a full session with Dr Gheyi. This time the IPL machine was set to a slightly higher level, and the zapping process began in earnest! Again, there was no discomfort during or after the treatment which lasted a mere ten minutes, and in next to no time I was back in Norwich trying out the various tester potions that Dr Gheyi had given me. They’re all made by the American company, Agera, and amounted to a facial cleanser, a serum, a retinol based cream, a moisturizer and a sun block. This is skin care with expertise but without frills – the products are unscented and highly tested/medically researched. I used them for a week. In all honesty, I can say that my skin felt a lot smoother than usual, and the sunscreen in particular was brilliant – non-greasy, and making my skin feel silky Three weeks later, I returned for my final session. By this time the offending spot had faded to being almost unnoticeable, and when I happened to mention where I was going to friends and family, and then pointed to the offending age spot, I was met with looks suggesting I was mad to worry about such an inconsequential blot! A final blast with the IPL, and within two weeks, just in time for Christmas, the sun spots had gone! All well and good, except now I’m vaguely hooked! May be try micro-dermoabrasion, depilation (via IPL) and filling treatment (botox or restylane). Watch this space …

There will be an Art Exhibition and Sale at St. Margaret’s Church, Thorpe Market NR11 8UA on 7 and 8 March from 10am to 4pm presented by Trunch Art Collective

Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic

Find me a woman in her 40’s who doesn’t want to knock a few years off her appearance! With many friends now in their late forties, several have snuck off to have various forms of cosmetic enhancement, whether it be dental implants/whitening, breast implants or the odd dose of Botox. As for me, both bank balance and intuition advised to grow old gracefully! But all worthy intentions fast evaporated when the opportunity came to visit Dr Gheyi at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic. What I really wanted him to tackle was something that no amounts of facials (a private addiction) seemed able to fade – horrible, horrible age spots. From my early forties, these dark freckles have been multiplying. I’ve already got the hands of an octogenarian, but hands don’t really bother me. It’s the face that counts. I can just about grin and bear laughter lines, and gravity’s pull hasn’t yet begun in earnest, but these dark spots really annoy me. I’ve tried every concealer imaginable – and none of them work. If anything, they highlight the problem. Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic is situated in new buildings just outside Wroxham. Dr Sanjay Gheyi is the man in charge, and the fact that he is a practicing GP four days a week at Coltishall Surgery, and regularly attends medical conferences worldwide on the subject of cosmetic enhancement, is immensely reassuring. The clinic boasts some pretty hefty equipment – and the last thing one wants is a novice at the driving wheel! We’ve all heard horror stories of how relatively simple procedures can go wildly wrong! For the first session, Dr Gheyi did an overview of my skin, focussing on the age spots. He explained he could treat them with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) which would fade them, if not cause them to disappear completely. He also stressed the need to wear sun screen each and every day of the year. But I do wear sunscreen, Doctor, honest. He pointed out that it’s often easy to forget the sides of one’s face when applying cream of any type – which is exactly where my sun spots are appearing. Dr Gheyi took some particularly ghastly photos of the age spots, which he blew up and showed me on screen. This was by far the worst part of the session - a brown spot which maybe measures 3 millimetres at most was suddenly expanded to 30cms in diameter – and looked like a nasty explosion of molten toffee. Photo session over, Dr Gheyi asked me to hop up onto the couch, and relax. He wanted to

Amanda Moriarty’s Memorial Prize 2020

In 2017 Amanda Moriarty, a long serving board member and Honorary Treasurer of the Norfolk based Contemporary Glass Society (CGS), passed away. “In memory of her enthusiasm and encouragement of glass making, the society offers an annual prize,” says CGS Chair Sue Purser Hope. “The aim is to help a CGS member to fulfil an aspiration or add to their technical skill, something that they would find difficult without this prize.” Renowned glass painter, Mark Angus is offering a CGS member the chance to be tutored and to work in his studio in Graz, Austria, this autumn. Amanda had been a student of Mark’s when he was teaching in the School of Art and Design, Bristol; 25 years ago, just as she was beginning her own glass journey. The CGS is looking for a serious student, who wants to develop ideas and skills in a career of glass painting. They must have some previous experience of glass painting. Applications for this two week residency can be found on the CGS website https://www.cgs.org.uk/news/2020-amanda-moriarty-prize. Deadline for applications is 28 February 2020.

The county of big skies and beaches Is the county where Nelson was born, Where undulating farmland Borders the purple-red light of the dawn. They may call it the road to nowhere But with millennia of history unique, Shaped by the Wash and North Sea’s coastline – Though ebbing away as we speak. With ancient stones, cathedrals, museums, Norwich, the Fine City, stands tall. War survivor, revived, multi-cultured – Confident beyond the city wall. Rich-harvested fields, ploughed and scattered. Coastal waters yield seafood and power. Inland stately homes and royal turrets. History-laden churches with circular tower. No motorway arteries, but reed-swaying Broads. The county of tradition at ease. Village-green patchwork and characterladen towns. Norfolk’s thousand good reasons which please. Steve Fordington © 2020

The Search for Toto

Red Loft Theatre is following the Yellow Brick Road all the way back to the Atrium in North Walsham for its Easter production ‘The Wizard of Oz’. Dorothy, played by 16 year old Amelia Watson, needs your help to find a starring member of the cast her best friend Toto!

Anyone who remembers the 1939 classic will recall how the aptly named ‘Terry’ the terrier stole the show with her unwavering love and support for Dorothy as she navigated her tumultuous travels over the rainbow. It is a show-stopping performance like this which Dorothy and Red Loft are looking for in their Toto. They will be holding ‘Toto Tryouts’, their very own doggie auditions, on 21 February at 7pm in St Benet’s Hall North Walsham for everyone who believes their pup has what it takes to bring the audience to its feet. The perfect Toto should be able to follow commands, fit in a basket (sorry Great Danes) and not be scared by loud noises or sudden bangs, as well as being friendly and adorable! The show will take place 14 -18 April at the Atrium in North Walsham. Rehearsals are Sunday afternoons. To volunteer your hound to be crowned, get in contact to book your audition slot either by email info@redlofttheatre.com or call 07823 556312

Get your pet “summer ready” with Toll Barn Vets

With the festive season finally over, many of us have made New Year Resolutions to make our own healthier diet and lifestyle choices. These choices could also benefit our pets! Exercising is a great way of getting both you and your pet active and also a great way of bonding with your pet. Regular exercise helps keep the heart and lungs healthy, build muscle, maintain a healthy weight and provide mental stimulation. Don’t forget exercise is not only for our canine pets, cats can be encouraged to exercise by playing with toys or using “treat balls” to give them their usual food ration, whilst rabbits can be encouraged to exercise with foraging games.

We understand it can be really difficult to monitor our pets’ weight and resist those appealing eyes asking for treats however, research from the Pet Food Manufacturers Association (PFMA) suggests 92% of owners were unaware that their pet was an unhealthy weight. This is important because as little as 20% extra weight can significantly increase the risk of diabetes, osteoarthritis, heart disease, respiratory disease and certain cancers.

Pets, much like humans, come in many different shapes and sizes and relying on numbers can be dangerous. When assessing a pets weight it is not just the number on the scales which is important. It is equally as important to use a body condition score technique rather than just relying on the numbers. It is far better to use a body condition score which assesses characteristics such as ease of feeling the ribs and waistline to determine your pets’ ideal weight. Don’t worry – Toll Barn Vets is here to help! We understand how time consuming and difficult it can be to help your pet achieve their target weight and even to work out if your pet needs to work on their festive bulge. Our friendly team of veterinary nurses are offering free of charge nutrition clinics for our patients which include body condition scoring, advice on diets and feeding as well as general health and exercise advice depending on your pet’s condition. The clinics are free and available for dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs. To book an appointment with our friendly team please give us a call on 01692 407126.

The Mundesley Junior Championship Trophy + Handicap Cup went to Finley Burnett -Kiernan. Mundesley Golf Club’s junior section aims to start playing friendly matches against other clubs this year, and to take part in the SuperSixes League and GirlsGolfRocks campaign

– but mainly to allow youngsters, whatever their ability to improve and enjoy their sport. To find out more contact the Club on 01263 720095 or email manager@mundesleygolfclub.com

Hedgehog Haven

Remember the little hoglet Thimble who came to me in October with his eyes still closed? Well just look at him now! What a success story it has been. Come Spring he will be released. This makes all the hard work worthwhile. A new one, Snowdrop, came into care on 18 January at only 290 grams. She was very cold and hungry and was found just before the frosty weather. She seems to be getting on ok. Even at this time of the year not a week goes by without a new admission.

(submitted by Mundesley Golf Club) Mundesley junior golfers celebrate their successes at the presentation event.

Ode to a Mother-in-law

No matter what I say or do, it's never good enough! As far as Ma-in-law’s concerned, my housework makes her scoff! The house is far too dusty; my cooking makes her sneer; My ironing is just a joke, compared to hers, I fear. So I've been saving really hard, to buy a special treat. A holiday for Ma-in-law, a pre-paid, one way seat! Somewhere hot and far away, where she can fly or sail. Then I can live my life in peace, on this I will not fail! Or maybe she can take a cruise around the freezing fjords, The temperatures will match her moods and icy, biting words! I’m saving all my money to make this dream come true, And pray she sails right off the end, or flies into the blue! Frances Wraight

SCOUTS FOCUS THEIR RADAR ON ACHIEVING EVEN MORE TOP AWARDS IN 2020! Thanks to the tremendous support and thoughtfulness of Manager Lynn Kerslake and the amazing enthusiasm and encouragement of so many of her Neatishead volunteers, more than 60 Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from across North East Norfolk experienced a specially arranged visit with talks, and guides through each of the activity rooms at the Royal Air Force Air Defence Radar Museum (ADRM) on the site of the former Royal Air Force radar and control base RAF Neatishead, close to the village of Horning in the heart of the Norfolk Broads. Sally Weekes, who had organised the Top Awards Celebration for the District Scouts, says that the Neatishead team (many were people who had worked at the RAF base when it was an operational centre of the nation's air defence and about the most secret place in Britain) were so helpful in setting-up the event and extremely knowledgeable ensuring that two groups of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts each had a fascinating insight into the role Neatishead radar played in WWII and the Cold War, viewed the Bristol Bloodhound missile outside and were allowed to sit down and experience hands-on real equipment that once showed what the enemy was up, Cotishall Search and Rescue and dressing-up, as well as (possibly the biggest thrill of all!) sitting in the cockpit of a Jaguar ground-attack craft, and seeing the recently acquired cockpits from Lightning fighter aircraft. Our hosts also arranged for parents to have their own mini-tours and we were all able to enjoy the kind hospitality of the amazing catering team throughout the day who provided copious hot & cold drinks, sandwiches, soup, jacket potatoes and other lunchtime snacks – all made individually by a really friendly team of volunteers. Sally explained that this very special event was arranged to celebrate our young people who had achieved their Chief Scout Awards - the top award achievable in each Scouting Section. Sections from Aylsham, Buxton Lamas, Cromer, Hoveton & Wroxham, Mundesley, Rural (Roughton Mill), Salhouse, Sheringham and West Runton attended with 31 Beavers, the first and youngest section of the Scout Group generally aged between 6 and 8 years old, gaining their Bronze Awards; 27 Cub Scouts, the second section of the Scout Group following on from Beavers, young people generally aged between 8 and 10 years old, gaining their Silver Awards; and 22 Scouts, generally aged between 10 ½ to 14 years old, gaining their Gold Awards. They were also joined and supported by Explorers, 14 to 18 years old and several Scout Network members, 18 to 25 years old.

We were also very pleased that our North Walsham Young Leader, Jack Cowell, made it back to Norfolk from Agricultural College to be presented with his very special Young Leader Belt for completing all of his Young Leader training. When they were presented with their Awards by our host, ADRM Manager Lynn Kerslake, the young people cited several favourite activities which they particularly enjoyed whilst gaining their badges to achieve their Top Awards, and these included: Abseiling, Archery, Shooting, Outdoor Activities, Sleepovers, Camping, Beach Trips, Hikes, Technology and IT, Visits to the Zoo, Canoeing, Cycling and Fitness, Family Camps, Knotting, Playing Games and making new friends, Den Building, Kayaking, Cooking, the Olympic Badge, attending NORJAM (International scout and guide jamboree at the Norfolk Showground) and “being taken out of my comfort zone and enjoying reaching new goals”. Everyone is looking forward to achieving even more badges, learning new skills and having even MORE FUN in 2020! If anyone is interested in joining Scouting, whether a young person or adult in a nearby local Group, please contact District Commissioner Paul Henriksen at dc@northeastnorfolkscout.co.uk or 07766 762972

When is medical treatment negligent? The value of clinical negligence claims against the NHS was reported this week as being in excess of £80bn. A number of issues arise out of the reports, including the extent to which the NHS is learning from previous mistakes, defensive medicine and the standard of care provided to patients across all disciplines of medicine. The issue of whether care provided to a patient is negligent or not will depend very much on the type of care provided. Care, for these purposes, includes the interpretation of investigations, for example x-rays and blood samples, the provision of information regarding treatment options, including surgery and prescription drugs, as well as any surgery or non-invasive treatment provided. Although the standards by which treatment will be judged by the Courts continue to evolve, there are a number of areas where the picture is becoming clearer. The long-standing principles in the leading cases of Bolam and Bolitho still exist, but are applied more sparingly, for instance, the decision of a medical professional to follow one of a number of choices regarding a patient's care must still be one that a reasonable body of medical opinion would adopt and which stands up to logical scrutiny. Clinicians are required to take reasonable care in interpreting the results of scans, blood and tissue samples, which is a slightly different standard. One notable development in recent years is the extent to which medical staff are required to inform patients about the risks associated with particular treatment or surgery. Courts have found that, even when surgery or treatment has been carried out non-negligently, but medical staff have given insufficient information about the risks of that treatment, a claim could succeed. Medical staff are under a greater duty to both consider
