Reading Group Celebrates 10th Birthday
Flowers for Mandy
This reading group of 14 Mundesley ladies (& one gentleman) have been meeting every month at the library for ten years and celebrated their birthday on the afternoon of 8 May.
This was their first meeting on a Tuesday instead of Monday following the recent extension in the library opening hours, with ‘Open Library’ which allows access every day of the week to most

facilities, even when unstaffed. It is a simple procedure to register.
As a Friend of Mundesley Library, I joined the jolly ladies for a while to find out more about their group. Some of the ladies present had been members from the beginning but could not remember what their first book choice was, after all they have read over 100 books to date.
The group chooses a different book every month to read & discuss at their meeting, the library staff need to order enough copies of the books two months ahead. They have just finished reading ‘The Last Pilot’ by Bejamin Johncock and are about to read ‘Badgerlands’ by Patrick Barkham.
When I asked them if they had ever made a mistake in their choice of book, they said “yes” as they have different tastes but they told me that it then livens up their discussions.
The group always varies their choice of books which covers all kinds of categories so there is

something for everyone. I was assured that those who do not like the chosen book are not obliged to read it.
This is just one of the wonderful groups who meet regularly at the Mundesley Library.

Gardens for all Ages at Mannington
At Mannington Gardens we like to think there is something for everyone – young and old. For our younger visitors as well as lots of open spaces to play and paths to explore, there are swings and, new for this year, we are beginning a fairy nature trail.
Our children’s nature club, the Mannington Minnows, has been running for over 30 years and we now welcome the children of some of our original ‘Minnows’.
Throughout the summer holidays we will be running nature discovery days every Tuesday and Thursday, open to all children, not just members from 6 years old (pre-booking essential). The children will be helping to decorate the Victorian pig sty with its miniature garden at the start of the trail.
For older folk there are plenty of tranquil corners with seats provided. The garden for the less able with its raised beds and novelty fountain has shady seating. The Greedy Goose tearoom provides locally sourced homemade treats – look out for the speciality scones! Good picnic spots abound. Hall tours available some days – watch the website or ask at the entrance.
If you are just beginning to get interested in gardens you may find inspiration in so many different styles of planting and plants to purchase
too. The board walk across the beautiful wildflower meadow leading to the bird hide is accessible for wheelchair users and buggy pushers! This year visits are enhanced by a slide show prepared over the last two years during their survey of this special site by the Norfolk Wildlife trust showing its year-round delight. As it is in our entrance building there something to look at if we have a shower!
If it rains and you want to be indoors this year we have the Garden Exhibition - an historical review of Walpole Gardens - in the newly refurbished Stable Yard Gallery (find it next to the Greedy Goose Tearooms) .
and always with an interesting twist for those more familiar with its entertaining dialogues. Our history based Paston Day on 5 August 5th includes medieval soldiers and players in the hall and grounds and on Nature Day on 19 August there will be special activities for children.
On Norfolk Day 27 July the Hall will be open with illustrations from the Walpole family history linking the generations. Lord Walpole is particularly pleased with the choice of the day, as it his late mother’s birthday and the birthday of a 13-yearold grandson (half price entry all day). Don’t forget our Charity Family Fun Day on 2 September 2nd and book well in advance for our Christmas magical festive event in aid of BREAK - 30 November to 2 December.
Our programme of events similarly is designed to appeal to all age groups. “Raising the Roof of Baconsthorpe Church
In 2017 St. Mary’s Church, Baconsthorpe suffered two lead thefts that were reported in the national press and were featured on local news programmes. Although the robbers were caught and are now in prison no money was recovered to mend the roof. The repairs are going to cost in excess of £100,000.

After surviving just a few seconds on ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ before Simon Cowell dismissed them, star organists Tony Stace and Andrew Nix couldn’t really have cared less, as the shows they do individually all over the UK are just amazing, but put these two organ wizards together and you really have something very special - so much so that when they visited the latest in the 'Briston Organ Shows’ series of events on Friday 11 May, the Copeman Centre was packed to capacity with very enthusiastic live music lovers who really do recognise talent when it is put in front of them.

Using their Roland and Yamaha organs, they rattled through a summer themed medley including Nat King Cole’s ‘Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer’, then on to a Tom Jones medley, the Dam Buster’s March, a huge medley of former TV themes, accompanied by appropriate video clips on the big screen TV, and some very authentic Glenn Miller numbers. They finished the show with a modern organ classic, the fast and furious ‘Circus Renz’, and the final applause was just deafening!
The shows are not only great entertainment, but also fundraisers for both the Copeman Centre itself, which benefited to the tune of nearly £240, and our ongoing support for the wonderful Orbis Flying Eye Hospital project, which raised another £81.50 on the night. Over the course of a year, we always raise well over £1000 for them, and this year it could easily pass the £1500 mark! It’s a shame Simon Cowell wasn’t in the audience to see what he rejected so quickly, but unless he had pre-booked, he wouldn’t have got in anyway as there were no seats left - bad luck Simon!
Our next show is on Friday 22 June, again at the Copeman Centre, Hall Street, Briston, NR24 2LG, starting at 7.30pm, and our guest player for the evening is the wonderful Geordie organ star Mark Thompson - another Briston favourite. He plays just about all styles of music from classics to pop, film and TV greats, Big Band, you name it, he includes it in his amazing one-man show. Tickets are available now (pre-booking is essential due to the popularity of these shows) and you can book your seats so easily by ‘phoning Carol on 01263 860844 - payments by credit or debit cards are very welcome. They cost just ÂŁ6 each, and under 16 year olds can get in absolutely free if accompanied by a paying adult.
The Copeman Centre is warm, has good acoustics, comfortable seating, wide level access which is ideal for disabled visitors, and plenty of free car-parking just outside the front door. The refreshments in the interval are pretty good too! We also make use of a huge, high mounted TV too, so you can see close ups of the player’s hands in action. If you like good live music, do come and join us!
June at the Museum of the Broads

North Norfolk District Council’s famous herd of Bagot goats has arrived back in Cromer as they prepare to spend another summer at the popular seaside resort.
This herd first came to Cromer in 2016, when eight goats began the task of keeping the cliff habitat under control. Last year, a further eight were brought down from Cumbria and added to the herd, and the size of their enclosure was also doubled.

The Bagot is believed to be Britain’s oldest breed of goat and unlike most other breeds - that favour mountains and uplands - it developed in the English lowlands. Bagots are very hardy and easy to tame.
Since then, 10 billies were sold to Suffolk Wildlife Trust to make room for the purchase of a complete breeding herd from Somerset earlier this year.

WHY CHOOSE ARD SIL LVER V &W AR SILVER WARD SOLICITORS in 201 ? 201 ? SOLICITORS
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. ficult me of the year can be a diffficult ficul time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for examI appreciate that any time ple, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offfers fers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT TMENT T, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offfer fer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norfolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. New production for the Jubilee Players
‘Busybody’ a comedy by Jack Popplewell
After the disappointment of not being able to put on a production since February 2017, we’re delighted to announce that The Jubilee Players will be treading the boards again at The Tithe Barn in Horstead in June.
Busybody is a comedy set in 1960s London and centres around an archetypal talkative cleaning lady, Mrs Piper, who lives in the basement flat of the office block she cleans. We join her as she discovers a dead body, but

by the time the police arrive, there is no body and no evidence of a crime having been committed.
The wrong alarms are sent out, murdered men turn up alive, and the whole thing is chalked up to the cleaning lady’s imagination until an unidentified body turns up some miles away and Mrs Piper uncovers more evidence in the course of her duties. Is the company owner staging his own murder? Is his wife withholding vital evidence? Where do the two female assistants fit in?
Scotland Yard’s finest are determined to solve the crime but it’s not going to be without the help of Mrs Piper who is not only ready to tell the cops to mind their own business, but also how to go about their business.
Performances Tuesday 26, Thursday 28 and Friday 28 June (no Wednesday performance) at 7.30pm at The Tithe Barn, Horstead. All tickets £6. Box Office Sandra’s Salon, 18, Wroxham Road, Coltishall, NR12 7EA Tel daytime: 01603 736676 evening 01603 738764

A Grove Miscellany
very much involved with St George’s Church in Holborn.
Ruth is busy with young people working for a group of churches around Stroud. Hannah and Ruth have said that they do not have time to get too actively involved with the running of The Grove but keep a great interest in what is happening.
A few reminiscences of 75 years at The Grove, by John Graveling.
Part 27 1978 to 2010 .....
The Catton’s plus Emma
After 27 years running The Grove we realised that time marches on and that we should start preparing for the time when we would follow the path of all mortal flesh. We built a house where Terry’s tractors used to be and moved in there in April 2005. We told the children that either we would have to sell The Grove or they would have to take it over when Ann reached 65. They didn’t want to sell. We took on Paul & Rachel Catton as managers together with their three young triplets. We would fill in for them one day a week to give them a day off, and also when they were on holiday. This has worked out pretty well but now in 2010 we have relinquished it all.
Richard and Jo live not too far away near Norwich and they frequently come over with Cameron and Jennifer. It is always nice seeing them and the children sometimes come to stay. That is good except that they for some reason insist on waking up about 5 a.m. Cameron crawled into our bed and in our semi-comatoze state asked us where numbers came from! Jo takes a very active interest in the decorations of The Grove and her colour schemes are somewhat different to what we were used to – but they have turned out well.
Mum and Dad’s Golden Wedding We were young once!
I think Richard is quite proud of the title I gave him as “The mover and shaker”
Chris and Becca live in Hilton near Cambridge and have a lovely little girl Georgia and a little boy Zac. Chris looks after all the accounting and finance side of The Grove. Liz is down in Bath having achieved a PhD after research in Ghana. She is very active in the advertising side for The Grove.

New Facility at Benjamin Court Opens
A new accommodation-based reablement facility in Cromer has opened.
Benjamin Court is a facility designed to give hospital leavers an opportunity to build confidence to regain their independence. Norfolk County Council has invested £1.6m in the unit, which has been changed from a palliative care unit to a reablement centre.
The service began in February, but was formally opened last month by Cllr Shelagh Gurney, vice-chairman of the Adults Social Services Committee at Norfolk County Council.
She said “We understand how much people value their independence, and want to stay in their own homes for as long as possible and our new unit is certainly making that possible for more of our residents.
“Since it opened three months ago it has already helped nearly 50 people get back on their feet and return home safely and
confidently after a hospital stay.”
Benjamin Court will have capacity for 18 service users, with nine residents currently in place.
The first user to come through the doors was 93-year-old John Worthington, a former Second World War commando who had been treated in hospital for double pneumonia. He spent around a fortnight at Benjamin Court, before returning home to his wife Yvonne, 97.
He said, upon returning to the facility for the official opening, “The staff here were very good, excellent …everything here was excellent. They look after you.”
Norfolk County Council aims to open more reablement centres in the near future, with a number of locations under consideration.

Horoscope by Claire Manion Astrologer July 2018
ibra ♎ 21st September- 21st October The solar eclipse in Cancer on the 13th could bring change at work. This may take the form of a new project which needs nurturing. At first this might seem daunting, but some free thinking and hard work should give you rewarding results.
Taurus ♉ 20th April - 21st May Do you have any unhealthy habits that you would like to get to grips with? Mid July is a good time to turn over a new leaf. The changes might be easier than you imagined; finding a new routine can really help you to feel good about yourself.
Sagittarius ♐ 21st November- 21st December You may have felt like you were getting nowhere fast, but this is not really the case. Situations could have been forced you to look more closely at the details than you usually like to. Some journeys are not all about the big picture; it’s often the little things that make them special.
Aries ♈ 21st March - 20th April The solar eclipse on July 13th puts an emphasis on new beginnings, in your case it is likely to be in the home. Are you thinking of ringing the changes? By the end of the month, family issues could come to a head, luckily your friends should be on hand with clear headed advice and practical help.
Scorpio ♏ 21st October- 21st November There are opportunities opening up for you this month, but you may have trouble finding time to make the most of them. Remember, you don’t have to do everything, other people will help if you ask them to; a little delegation can go a long way.
Gemini ♊ 21stMay - 21st June Money matters look to be in the spot light. Using your ingenuity to think up some creative ways to boost your finances should pay off, particularly if you team up with another person. As a result of this you could be quite busy, but all the effort should be worthwhile.
Capricorn ♑ 21st December – 20th January When it comes to relationships, it takes two to tango and sometimes taking the initiative can be very productive. At the end of July, the lunar eclipse is a time to let loved ones know how much you care, just remember to give them some space.
Leo ♌ 22nd July- 21st August Unusually, you may have felt quite shy and retiring recently. This month, you should feel more outgoing; your friends and loved ones may make quite an effort to encourage you to join in the fun. You might be surprised just how much they appreciate you.
Pisces ♓ 19th February – 20th March Have you got a secret project that you are working on? If so, around the lunar eclipse on the 27th, you might have a breakthrough. This could inspire you to act and make it more public, involving others can help your dream come true.
Cancer ♋ 22nd June -22nd July Have you have been feeling a bit held back recently? The solar eclipse on the 13th is in your sign, bringing positive change. Give your imagination free rein; it is time to think big and venture beyond your comfort zone.
Virgo ♍ 21st August- 21st September It looks like it is time to let your hair down and enjoy yourself. A holiday aboard would be a great way to explore new and interesting places. Make sure you have everything prepared before you travel so you can relax. Leave the work to someone else for a while and have a well earned break!

Crosswords
I find crosswords so addictive, They grip you as tensions accrue! You’re filling them in, so pleased with yourself, When - blast! There’s a clue you can’t do. You struggle and try every which way, To understand what the clue means. It’s annoying when you cannot get it Your ego’s smashed to smithereens! I always feel pleased when I’ve done it, Though I don’t time myself, that’s for sure! I just want the pleasure of testing my brain Against my unknown ‘Crossword Tsar’! After a while you get used to the fact That he works in a well-defined way, And once you can follow his thinking, There are few you can’t finish each day. Days pass by with such pleasure, I can’t miss my favourite crossword! It’s the only puzzle I’m interested in, I know - it sounds quite absurd! There is just one fly in the ointment, Each year, just out of the blue, My ‘Tsar’ goes off on his holidays And I can’t solve one bloomin’ clue!

So who has liposuction or liposculpture?
Well, it is everyday people like me and you, not only rich and famous. The majority of our patients are normal people and not toned models sporting six pack chiselled torso that you might see in glossy brochures and magazines. We do see some of these lucky people who want to add a little more definition too!
Our oldest patient is a 76 year old lady who wanted to get rid of the stubborn and uncomfortable abdominal roll. We see middle aged woman who find it hard to shift belly fat after childbirth or that little overhang after caesarean section! We see young and middle aged men who are ex-forces but now find it difficult to stay in shape or shift man boobs. We see young and old with pockets of fat under their chin which is something they seem to have inherited and it seems to be at odds with the rest of their body.
It is not that you have not tried. You have been regularly using the gym and been careful about what you eat but you just can't shift that stubborn area of fat around the mid-section or saddle bags, legs, arms or back… you get the picture. This hard to shift fat can be in any location based on what you inherit.
What do you do next? Thanks to modern technology these concerns can be alleviated in a very short time. Liposuction means a major surgical procedure to most people. What is less well known is that it can be carried out in a safe, gentle and comfortable manner. If I told you that you can have liposuction while listening to music and then walk out of the procedure room-would you believe me? Yes, it is possible and has been for a while.
a very dilute solution of local anaesthesia while you will be chatting with the team. A tiny 0.6 mm laser fibre will then be introduced into the treatment area. The laser will be activated to melt the fat and tighten the skin. The laser will not be used if you decide to recycle the fat to enhance other face or body areas such as breasts, buttocks or hands etc. This procedure involves fat injections to add volume. Small stainless steel tubes [micro cannula] will be used to suck out melted fat. Compression garments will then be applied and you will be able to go home. You will need someone to drive you home. What happens after the procedure? You will have dressings and tight compression garments for 24 hours. After this the dressings can be removed and gentle compression used for further 3-5 days. You are encouraged to go for a light walk and bed rest is not recommended. Most people return to normal activities within 2-5 days.
So, if you have wanted liposuction but worry about general anaesthesia, hospitalisation or lengthy recovery period or bruising, give us a call on 0800 0430737 or log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk for more information.
Who is suitable for laser liposuction? Anyone with resistant pockets of fat. You have to be in good general health without significant medical problems and near your ideal body weight. Liposuction is not an alternative to diet and exercise and it is not a weight loss measure. It is purely to remove stubborn deposits of fat and a body sculpting or contouring treatment.
What areas are commonly treated? Mummy tummy, upper and lower abdomen, jowls and neck, double chins, love handles, muffin tops, hips, man boobs or moobs, upper arms, thighs, knees and most other body areas with localised collections of fat.
What happens during the procedure? You will have a medical consultation and treatment plan will be discussed. Fine needles will be used to administer

School’s GoGoCreate Leveret Sculpture Hitches a Ride on Open Top Sightseeing Bus
Norwich is preparing for this summer’s GoGoHares trail which will see a trail of 50 Hares to celebrate the 50th birthday of Norfolk children’s Charity Break and their 50 years supporting vulnerable children, young people and families.
Norfolk schools, community and sports clubs are involved in the GoGoCreate project to decorate a Leveret (the name for a young hare) which will be placed around the city in a wide range of locations from 2 July to 2 September.
Corpusty Primary School are taking part and have been busy decorating their very own Leveret – named ‘Dandelion’ – who is excitedly getting ready for this summer’s big event. Thanks to Norwich’s open-top tour bus operator David McMaster, ‘Dandelion’ hopped aboard the City Sightseeing Norwich bus recently and enjoyed a ride into the city, stopping off at The Forum , in preparation for the trail.
local surroundings and it is great that the children from Corpusty Primary have really engaged with the associated learning resource.” said Peter Marron, GoGoCreate Coordinator.
own hare. The village of Corpusty hosts a Bonfire Night event every November and after a long winter the village green looks rather sorry for itself. However, the children at Corpusty School took their inspiration for Dandelion Hare from the carpet of golden dandelions that return every spring followed by a drifting mist of “parachutes” as the seeds spread - a spectacular sight, much-loved by the children.
The pupils were eager to get to work and staff decided to work with transfers so even the younger children could get involved, helping to develop drawing skills. All the children’s designs began with a circle and feature not only dandelions but also parachutes, moths and stars. Meanwhile, a team of steady hands worked on painting the background with essential support of tireless parents. Pupils have also been learning about Hares – collating factual reports and writing some incredible poetry.
Corpusty Primary School and Nursery is a small village school with just 89 children on roll but they place a big emphasis on pride in their community and celebrating country traditions; they even created a few new ones of their own. The children were delighted to get the opportunity to take part in the trail and along with other Norfolk schools pupils were tasked to create designs for their very

Head Teacher, Dan Buddle, said “Our Leveret was purchased with money raised by the children and parents and we were determined to make the very most of their investment. At the same time as helping Break, I think we've really benefitted; with children, parents and staff united in the task of realising a design that is totally about us and our immediate environment”.

The Bank of Mum and Dad
Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr
‘The Bank of Mum and Dad' is the 9th biggest mortgage lender in the country. It is estimated to have lent £6.5 billion in 2017.
Parents who help children to buy their first home should be aware of all sorts of repercussions.
An outright gift with no-strings is the easiest, but the question of how one is to be fair to all your children needs careful handling. Your Will may need altering. Another option is a loan; but is it really to be repaid, and, if so, on what terms? Is interest to be charged? Any commercial mortgage company also lending will insist on having priority to your loan.
Another possibility is that the parents take a share in the home, even if they are not registered as legal owners. Their interest can be evidenced by a deed called a Declaration of Trust. The recently toughened-up Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) is now an important consideration, as an extra 3% higher rate is charged additionally on a second home, or an interest in it. To limit SDLT a gift or loan is better than an equity share.
Many parents are concerned about their child’s marriage or relationship and that the money given might be lost in a messy divorce/break-up. Retaining a loan/share of equity could protect the funds given or lent. A 2017 report showed that the reason why 1 in 3 parents were unwilling to provide support to married children was due to concerns about the children’s spouse.
Your legal matters in safe hands
This worry can be protected against by the recipient-child entering into a pre-nuptial or cohabitation agreement. Such lack of trust in a family is difficult to bring up in conversation, so it may be easier for the solicitor to raise the safeguard of a pre-nuptial agreement (or be blamed for doing so) to maintain a happy family. A pre-nup could perhaps be a prerequisite of the gift. If the child is already married a post-nuptial agreement (post-nup) can achieve the same result. If the loan is never intended to be repaid, this route can be good asset protection, but bad tax-planning. The advantage of a gift is that it sets the ‘7-year clock’ running for Inheritance Tax (“IHT”). For Capital Gains Tax the child will get full main residence relief if they own the whole property, whether funded by a gift or a loan. If the parent holds a share of the house, they will have to pay full CGT on their share if they later sell or give it. Helping a child buy their first home remains a useful way of passing on family wealth. A trust can work well. You might consider a revocable interest. Trusts are not just used for tax mitigation and are a useful asset protection tool also.

A loan can be written off in stages to use up annual IHT gifting allowances. This release should be done by a deed. The loan could be repaid over the years in lieu of paying mortgageinterest. This is a good way to teach financial discipline; rather than the child being given too much too young.
The important thing is to talk it through with a solicitor, as your trusted advisor, so that you can establish your priorities and they can help you structure the arrangements in the best way to suit you and your family.
The Swallowtail Butterfly
The butterfly was flying on a summer breeze Across Hickling broad to his home in the reeds The water looked clear and inviting to him That he swooped down low, dipping his wings. Oh dear he thought this is a mistake The water’s so deep not I’m caught in the lake. He thought of his mother and sisters three I’ll never get home in time for tea. Then along came some people out for a ride And a kind hand was lowered to lift him inside. A man cupped his hands and the warmth he could feel Made his wings start to flutter, can this be real? With the boat on the jetty moored safe and tight fast People anxiously watched as he lay on the grass, Many eyes looked to see if he could still breathe Thanks goodness he’s safe now it’s such a relief. As soon as he’s rested his wings he will fly Back to his reed home under the sky

Mundesley #2minutebeachclean update
A year on and the Mundesley #2minutebeachclean station and all its magnificent users have made a huge difference to the litter on the beach. So it is fantastic that the wonderful Paula and Martin Gray of The Beach Hut Café, arcade and ice cream parlour on Beach Road, Mundesley have agreed to take over the board’s day to day management from the Mundesley NCI Coastwatch team who previously, and very kindly, managed it. To mark this transition Martin Dorey, the founder of the hugely successful #2minutebeachclean boards (and for
inland areas the new #2minutelitterpick and #2minutestreetclean boards) visited Mundesley to personally thank the Beach Hut Café. You may see the café staff lugging the heavy board to and fro across the zebra crossing and refilling it with donated plastic bags. Please do show your appreciation of Paula and Martin Gray’s generosity and support The Beach Hut Cafe, arcade and ice cream parlour Martin Dorey - their halloumi bites, sweet potato fries and ice cream are first rate! And if you have any unwanted plastic bags, be they carrier bags or bags that grocery
Back by popular demand, the UK’s largest horse sanctuary is again opening the doors to its Norfolk headquarters for free this July. Join Redwings Horse Sanctuary’s team and rescued horses and donkeys on Sunday 15 July for a day of tours, demonstrations, food and fun at its Hapton base, south of Norwich. Although the Sanctuary has visitor centres across the UK, its headquarters – home to its largest Rehoming Centre and Horse Hospital, including an operating theatre and intensive care stables – opens just once per year to the public. The event, which will run from 10am to 4pm, will include tours of the hospital by Redwings’ own veterinary team, including a special tour designed just for young children. During the vet tour,
everyone has the chance to meet rescued horses and donkeys and find out how the charity cares for its 1,500 residents – of which almost 350 live at its 350-acre Hapton site! Redwings’ rehoming team will also be showcasing how the charity trains its horses – many of whom arrive at the Sanctuary either semi-feral or having never been handled – with the aim of helping them find loving new homes outside the Sanctuary as part of the charity’s rehoming programme. And there will be plenty of opportunities to get hands-on with the horses with pony grooming and self-guided walks around the centre’s paddocks,

so don’t forget your good footwear. Look out too for cheeky mascots Red and Wings who will be dropping by to meet everyone! Plus, Redwings will be also adding some very ‘special guests’ – of the two and four-legged variety – to the day’s funfilled schedule so watch this space for more information coming soon! The Redwings Open Day is completely free and will take place on Sunday 15 July from 10am to 4pm, at Redwings Hapton, Norwich, Norfolk, NR15 1SW.

North Norfolk District Council hosts national Blue Flag awards ceremony
The annual awards ceremony which sees Keep Britain Tidy hand out Blue Flags and Seaside Awards to local authorities was held in Cromer last month.
Environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy presented 190 awards to England’s very best beaches, including 65 international Blue Flags and 125 Seaside Awards (eight more than last year), with 42 beaches achieving both awards.
Blue Flag winning authorities from Poole to Waveney and Torbay to Hastings were present at the ceremony on Cromer Pier. Organisations including Anglian Water, the RNLI Lifeguards, the Environment Agency, the Marine Conservation Society and parish councils from the Blue Flag towns and villages in North Norfolk also attended.
The suggestion that Cromer could host the event was made during last year’s Blue Flag ceremony, which was held in Bournemouth.
In 2017, North Norfolk District Council had its most successful set of Blue Flag results when the district secured six flags – at East Runton, West Runton,
Cromer, Mundesley, Sea Palling and Sheringham.
NNDC has repeated its success this year with East Runton, West Runton, Cromer, Mundesley, Sea Palling and Sheringham all named in this year’s Blue Flag list.
The awards recognise the top tier of English beaches and are given out only to those sites that have the highest quality of water, facilities, environmental education and management, with superb levels of cleanliness and safety.
Cllr John Lee, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and the Conservative Group, said “We are really proud to have retained our six blue flags in North Norfolk. It is recognition of all the hard work put in by various agencies and voluntary groups.
“Furthermore we are delighted we've been chosen to host this national event and welcomed our fellow coastal authorities to the beautiful North Norfolk coast.”
Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of the Liberal Democrat
Group at North Norfolk District Council, said “I’m delighted my own ward, The Runtons, has again been awarded two Blue Flags. Well done to all involved in North Norfolk and beyond.”
Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton said “The success of the 148 beaches in reaching the very high standards demanded by both awards is testament to all those who have worked so hard to protect and improve our beaches – from beach managers and volunteers to local people and businesses.
“When you enjoy a trip to a beach flying an international Blue Flag or Seaside Award, you know you are on one of the safest, cleanest and very best in the country.”
As well as the six Blue Flags, the beach at Wells, which is owned by the Holkham Estate but jointly managed by NNDC and the RNLI, won a Seaside Award.

Blakeney Rowing Club Wins Trophies at The Hanse Festival
It was a truly great morning of competition at King’s Lynn’s Hanse Festival. Bluejacket and Hoi Larntan were ably towed to the event by Club members and this was really appreciated. Blakeney crews and supporters gathered at around 8am behind the Corn Exchange, all looking resplendent in the blue club jackets. Early morning mist evaporated and warmth spread to create beautiful racing conditions. A muddy slipway was negotiated with some effort and soon competition was under way over the two-mile course.
maintained this throughout the morning despite a quick turnaround between some races. The humour and camaraderie on the pontoon made the morning pass swiftly.
The list of trophies gained is impressive. Awards will go on display for the best-looking craft, women’s and men’s runners up, mixed crews’ runners up. We were also the overall points winner which called for both crews to go up on stage at the end. See some great pictures on the club website at crablakeney.wordpress.com. Thanks to our King’s Lynn hosts for staging such a memorable event. We look forward to next year.
Why not come along and try skiff rowing? No need to race. Social rowing is great too. You are entitled to three sample rows before deciding whether to join and no previous experience is necessary. Coaching is always on offer. If you are interested in experiencing rowing for fun, contact Tom on 01263 761570. You can also follow club activities on Facebook. Hope to see you soon. Barry Howes.
Currents were strong and there was some jockeying for position at the starting line as coxes sought the best water. At the half way point, there were difficult bridge arches which tested boating skills and coxes needed to be on their mettle with swift, clear instructions – particularly as King’s Lynn and Blakeney skiffs were often neck and neck. Blakeney crews rowed with effort and style and
