New ‘Bathing Water’ designation for West Runton Defra decision follows NNDC request and formal consultations

West Runton beach has been officially designated as a ‘bathing water’, a key step on the way to winning sought-after Blue Flag status.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) recently announced that West Runton has successfully passed the tests to achieve the designation.

Beaches, and inland lakes that attract a large number of bathers, can be designated as bathing waters under the Bathing Water Directive. Water quality at bathing waters is tested during the bathing season, which in England runs from 15 May to 30 September.

Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet Member for Leisure, said “The district is very proud of its four Blue Flag beaches at Cromer, Sheringham, Sea Palling and Mundesley.

“The Blue Flag status helps both visitors and locals understand how

clean a beach and its waters are, as well as the high quality of facilities provided. It is something that is recognised worldwide.

“Bathing water designation is one of the crucial steps on the way to winning Seaside Award status, and then Blue Flag status.”

Cllr Sarah Butikofer, ward member for the Runtons, said “This is fantastic news for local people, local business and visitors. The quality of the beach warrants the designation, both in terms of its beautiful visual appeal and in terms of its history. We have coachloads of young people coming here on regular occasions to learn about the West Runton Mammoth, the chalk reef and the Cromer Forest Bed.”

The application for the designation was formally made by North Norfolk District Council following a local consultation. Defra ran its own consultation which was completed in March.

West Runton has RNLI Lifeguards operating from July to September, public toilets at the bottom of the gangway, car parking, bus and rail services, a café by the gangway and other food outlets and shops in the village. It also has a voluntary beach warden and a dog free area between May 1 and 30 September.

Mark Shea, Commercial Director at The Norfolk Hospice said “We are delighted that supporters are giving up their time to support The Norfolk Hospice and take on such a challenging event. As a charity, we rely on the generosity of individuals to help us continue our vital work within the local community.”

Hospice needs classic vehicles to join a tour of Norfolk’s greatest halls

A Fakenham Support Group is encouraging owners of classic vehicles to take part in ‘The Three Halls Classic Vehicle Run’ on Sunday 24 July to raise vital funds for The Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House.

Drivers will gather at Houghton Hall at 9am. Houghton Hall was built in 1720 and is the home of Lord and Lady Cholmondeley. It was built for Britain’s first Prime minister, Horace Walpole. All drivers will have the opportunity to drive across the magnificent grounds with views of white fallow deer.

Mark Shea, Commercial Director at The Norfolk Hospice said “We are very grateful to all of the individuals and local organisations who have come together to create this wonderful day out for anyone who loves classic vehicles and historic estates. The money raised will help individuals with life-shortening conditions live life to the full for as long as possible".

The entry fee is £20 per vehicle. You can book online now at www.norfolkhospice.org.uk or by calling the event organiser Angela Glynn on 07889 068 953.

Drivers will then motor down to Raynham Hall, home of Lord and Lady Townshend, who are kindly opening their private estate and grounds for the day. As this is such a rare treat, there will be a champagne reception to enjoy one of the finest homes in East Anglia. The final destination will be Holkham Hall, home of Lord and Lady Leicester. Drivers will enter the estate through the South Gate, where the vehicles will be paraded down a two mile long drive to the Deer Park. All of the vehicles will line up for the Concours d’ Elegance, while drivers and members of the public can enjoy the display Over 20 vehicles have already signed up including a 1914 Renault of commercial vehicles from local organisations. bit of variety with the informal concerts, and audiences are invited to come along, bring their sandwiches and enjoy their lunchbreak!

Last year’s North Walsham Festival was a great success, engaging with 8,700 as audience members, artists, performers and participants. There is even more ways for people to get involved this year - from free workshops to get ready for the Festival Parade, the Battle Project (recreating the 1381 Battle using dance), North Walsham Knits, the Festival Open Art Exhibition and lots of work with local schools.

Joseph Ballard, Festival director said “A town Festival should be shaped, delivered and animated by its community and it’s only as strong as the people who support it. We’re helping develop the sense of community here in North Walsham even further with profiling the Festival, making the town an exciting place with innovative events and attractions to make everybody – residents and visitors alike – very proud.” This year sees some new Festival events, like the lunchtime recital series in St Nicholas Parish Church. From harp, piano and flute there is a nice

The Mynx Soul Band will headline the Festival Tent in the evening of Saturday 25 June and the Norfolk and Norwich Medieval Association will be camped in the park all weekend too, with free demos and activities representing medieval life.

Lighter fun is also on offer, with Sing-Along Mamma Mia at the Atrium Theatre on the Friday night and the farcical comedy, Kindly Leave the Stage, presented by Baroque Theatre Company on Saturday 18 June also at the Atrium Theatre. Joseph continued “Sometimes I’m hesitant in promising something for all ages, but this year’s Festival holds to it. I hope the town will continue to support the Festival. I’m very proud that we can offer over 25 free events in just 8 days and it’s a great way for the town to come together for the biggest event of the year!”

The Festival HQ, at No. 1 Market Place has lots of brochures and posters at the ready. The local community are welcome to come and pick some up and help distribute them in workplaces, to neighbours, clubs and schools. 2016

This year’s North Walsham Festival, organised by Arts North Norfolk, will run 18 to 26 June. It is the town’s second Festival, and this year will mark the town’s links with the 1381 Revolt and Battle of North Walsham.

A new play The Good, the Bad and the Revolting will be premiered, which is a piece of free street theatre for all ages, which will start at the Market Cross and then lead the audience around to different town centre locations. The play will embrace some folk, elements of a Mummers Play, song and puppetry. There will also be some contemporary references as we explore the cognate elements of the people versus the state, which will be even more relevant being performed the week of the EU Referendum.

HOLT FESTIVAL

The Holt Festival has announced the full line up for the 2016 event. Described by Norwich Theatre Royal Chief Executive Peter Wilson as ‘One of the most important cultural events in Norfolk’, the award winning Festival is a glorious celebration of the arts and a jewel in the North Norfolk Crown.

Now in its eighth year, the Festival brings outstanding world class theatre, music, comedy, literature, children’s and visual art events to the picturesque Georgian town for eight days, from 23 to 31 July. Featuring a wealth of talent, this spectacular week of art and entertainment is testament to Artistic Director, Charles Pugh’s devotion to scouring the artistic world for performers who are exciting, interesting, sometimes challenging, sometimes nostalgic, but always entertaining.

Charles said ‘This year our list of famous artists grows even longer: Gyles Brandreth, Colin Cloud, Julie Christie, Joanna Trollope, Kate Adie, Jenny Eclair, Mark Watson not to mention famous name bands from the rocking 60s, 70s and 80s. But of course fame is not the only kite mark of excellence. Diamonds shine very brightly in our programme, with some names to look out for in the future. Believe me they will not disappoint. Please explore and enjoy!’

This year’s donation will be used to fund Community Music East to work

CLASP 'WALKING OUT OF DARKNESS'

Norman Lamb, the Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, has handed over a giant cheque to one of two local charities for which he recently fundraised.

The former health minister managed to raise over £3,500 during a 10 mile sponsored walk through London and presented a cheque to Mancroft Advice Project (MAP) in Norwich at the beginning of the month. He is due to do the same for the Holt Youth Project sometime later in June.

Speaking about the charities Norman said “Each person doing the sponsored walk could raise funds for mental health charities of their choice and I decided that these two brilliant charities in Norfolk deserved my support as they do incredible work.

“The Holt Youth Project is an award winning project which runs preventative programmes that allow young people to reach their full potential and meet their own aspirations, whilst MAP provides vital support to so many young people and I know that they are keen to invest more money in a youth hub in Cromer.

The sponsored walk, called 'Walking Out Of Darkness', took place on Saturday 14 May and saw thousands of people walk 10 miles through London to end the stigma surrounding mental illness and signalled the start of Mental Health Awareness Week 2016 (16th to 22nd May).

Organised by Counselling Life Advice Suicide Prevention Charity (CLASP Charity), a charity which aims to confront the stigma surrounding mental and stress related illnesses, it was the third time the walk had been organised. It was supported by the Department of Health, NHS, Time to Change, Rethink Mental Illness, Bank of England, Legal & General and others. Starting and finishing in Battersea Park walkers took in several of London's iconic landmarks including the London Eye, the Tower of London, Tower Bridge and the Shard.

“Every pound raised will really help as both charities do great things for young people in our area and they rely on the generosity of local people. “I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who sponsored me and to all those who took part in the walk.” Dan Mobbs, CEO of MAP, praised Norman's efforts saying “It's great to see Norman showing his support for young people. We really appreciate how willing he is to promote our work with young people's mental health, so that young people can access expert help early on, preventing unnecessary distress and crisis.”

Laser treatment of excessive underarm sweating

Until now, there were very few long-term solutions for treating excessive underarm sweating. Surgical treatments include removal of sweat glands, which could be associated with complications. Any surgery can be associated with prolonged recovery time and issues with healing and scarring. Other treatment operations involve interrupting major nerves inside the thorax. This operation was often associated with unacceptable complications, and is rarely performed.

Now there is a minimally invasive quick solution for long-term reduction of excessive underarm sweating. Lasers have revolutionized all areas of medicine and surgery. Now we have a minimally invasive laser procedure, to selectively destroy the sweat glands without requiring incisions.

So how is laser sweat reduction performed? This is performed purely under a local anaesthetic. A special test is used to delineate and mark the overactive sweat glands. A solution of anaesthetic is used to numb the areas of excessive sweating. When the area has been numbed up, a tiny laser fiber is introduced under the skin and the laser is activated. The laser energy destroys the sweat glands without causing any damage to the surrounding tissues. In some cases, a tiny hollow tube is introduced and the destroyed sweat glands are easily sucked out. The procedure only takes about one hour. What is the recovery like? Most patients are back to normal within 48 hours. There can be a minor degree of swelling and discomfort. Generally, the procedure is very well tolerated with reduction in sweating of up to 70 to 80%. Patients who had the procedure comment that first time in years they have been able to wear T-shirts without having to change them regularly.

June is a special month, The month I chose to marry, I remember the day so well, The pink roses that I carried, The rustle of my silk dress, As I walked up the aisle, Then seeing the man I love, Turn to me and smile. Brand New Rock & Soul Choir starting in West Runton

If you love singing, you’ll love this! Invidia Voices - Rock & Soul Choir have a brand new rehearsal group starting 22nd June in West Runton. But don’t worry if you think you can’t sing because they are kicking off with a singing workshop for beginners to prove that anyone can have fun singing, no matter how bad they think they are!

Founded in 2013 by husband and wife team Matt and Alex Emmerson, Invidia Voices has fast become one of Norfolk’s largest vocal groups growing to over 300 members in just a few years. With rehearsal groups available in North Walsham, Norwich, Acle, Great Yarmouth, Wymondham and now West Runton, Invidia owes its popularity to it’s fun and

easy going approach to singing, but Matt says “the best thing about this choir is our members. I’ve never met such a lovely, friendly and supportive bunch of people!” He went on to explain “There's no audition required and no need for any musical background, just a love of singing.

Uplifting, fun and incredibly social, Invidia Voices is a non-religious singing group whose aim is simply to smile, laugh and sing with like minded people. And who knows, you might discover that you’re not a bad singer after all!

Briston once again welcomed top Japanese organ and keyboard star Chiho Sunamoto to the Copeman Centre on Friday 6 May.

This very popular artist, who has played all over the world, is a great favourite with the crowds up here in North Norfolk, and this return visit packed the hall to capacity!

Using her yamaha EL900 organ and Tyros keyboard, she played such gems as ‘Also Sprach Zarathrusta’ - the theme from the film ‘2001’, some uncannily authentic Glenn Miller numbers, the full theme from the film ‘Star Wars’, some punchy latin numbers and big band

1$

As well as playing, she sang several numbers too, and also introduced her friend Jon Smith, who also obliged with some excellent vocals, and played the lead lines on several numbers using a Melodica - a bit like an overgrown harmonica with a small built in piano-style keyboard. The audience roared their approval, and thoroughly enjoyed the whole performance, which concluded with Chiho and Jon’s

haunting version of ‘That’s All’. These shows help to raise funds for the Copeman Centre and our chosen charity, the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital project, and we made £172 for the Centre, and the stall selling greetings cards, jams and marmalade, and plants made another £40 for ORBIS. What a result, a wonderful evening of the best live music and help for good causes too! The next Briston Organ Show is on Friday 1 July, when we will have another return visit from one of the cleverest organists currently working in the UK, the legendary Ryan Edwards. Why not come and join us? Tickets are just £6 each, and can be booked now by ‘phoning Carol on 01263 860844, or you can ask her to add your details to our ‘ring round’ list, where we will call you nearer the date to sort out your tickets.

Artists from this region are invited to submit up to three paintings for selection. Submission days are Friday 7 and Saturday 8 October. A Selection Panel comprising of independent experts in the world of art as well as members of the institute will select exclusively on the artistic merit of the work in the opinion of the Selection Panel, whose decision is final.

Parallel Dance Studios, run by Lucy Cook, offers dance tuition from age 2 years up to adults – ballet, tap, contemporary and street dance. Classes are held in Holt, Reepham and surrounding areas.

On 1 May dancers took part in the East Anglian Street Dance Championships and came away with medals for duos and solos. Reepham and Holt Junior crews were placed 4th and 5th and Reepham adult crew came 3rd.

The Holt Seniors, most of whom attend Sheringham High School and range in age from 11 years to 16 years, were placed 2nd, which means they qualify for the UK Street Dance Championships held in November in London.

Lucy and all the parents are very proud of all dancers for their hard work in rehearsals and for their dedication to the sport. ‘They are all superstars and their hard work paid off.’

Travel Back in Time

Fishermen’s Heritage Centre - in the Fishermen’s Heritage Centre the Hon. Charlotte Upcher was on hand to engage visitors about her reasons for commissioning Sheringham’s first lifeboat, the Augusta, in 1838 and Mrs Caroline Upcher (Charlotte’s daughter-in-law) talked about the famous second lifeboat - the Henry Ramey Upcher, in service from 1894 to 1935. Visitors also learned about how the lifeboats were launched, the brave fishermen who manned them and their rescues. Although the wind was particularly strong and cold on the afternoon and blowing right into the Fishermen’s Heritage Centre, visitors were very appreciative of the event. Comments included “very interesting and informative” and “we loved the costumed characters”.

Ten get Ten out of Ten - North Norfolk Photographic Society

One of the highlights of a camera club’s year is its annual competition. In the case of North Norfolk Photographic Society, this now results in four competitions, one each for Novices and Advanced members in each of two categories, prints and digital projected pictures. On 4 May, the projected images were judged by Vic Hainsworth.

After leaving the Services, Vic was for over 20 years a professional Judge Vic Hainsworth wedding photographer, and has been a member of Colchester Photographic Society for over 40 years. In February 2013, he was elected to the Executive of the East Anglian Federation of Photographic Societies as Awards Officer of the Photographic Association of Great Britain, his role being to promote distinctions around East Anglia. The Novice section attracted 25 entries from 10 members and was won by Grace Glaister with ‘Chilly in Cromer’, a photograph of Cromer pier on a chilly day, centred on two of the benches on which (unsurprisingly) nobody was seated!

A Grove Miscellany

A few reminiscences of 75 years at The Grove, by John Graveling.

On another occasion my father was bringing a troop train to Weybourne camp. It was very late on a hot summer’s night and the troops had opened the windows to get a breath of fresh air. At North Walsham the message came through that jerry was over. In order to stop any sparks from the engine being seen from above father dampered down the fire, went into a cutting with smoke belching out everywhere right into the open carriage windows. When they got out at Weybourne there was a train load of soldiers coughing and cursing. “What did you want? a carriage full of smoke or a bomb on your heads!” More about his stories later on.

Part 4: THE WAR YEARS CONTINUED

My early recollection of the war was the drawing room, later called the lounge, (in which I was born) being used as an emergency food store. It was piled high with white boxes full of tins of baked beans, powdered milk, powdered eggs and goodness knows what other goodies. We were strictly not allowed to touch them.

My father was an engine driver with LNER and was in charge of the locomotive department at Cromer High Station. Cromer High in those days was quite a large station. London trains started from there and some, such as the Broadsman did not bother to stop at Norwich. My father, as well as being an engine driver, also became a very good story teller. He was able to embroider quite a lot around the edges of truth.

Because of the shortage of milk he purchased a goat and brought it home on the train. It was pitch black and at the bottom of Mill Road was an army check post. “Halt. Who goes there?” Reply “ A man with a goat” Now no German infiltrator would ever think of saying something of that sort. “Advance man with a goat” That was OK but by now the goat was not to keen on moving. “Advance man with a goat!” After much kicking and pulling and bleating the goat eventually advanced and was allowed through the check point.

Site of former ammunition store below Links Hotel

The mention of Weybourne camp reminds me of a story I read in the book “Twin Towns at War”. As well as the army the womens Royal Army Corps were also drafted in. After a while six of these young ladies were asked to leave because of their “state”. On enquiry it was discovered that five of them were due to the same man.

We got to know lots of soldiers during the war. They were sad times as some we knew were then sent off to other parts and we never heard from them again. We regularly had around twenty come to The Grove- especially at Christmas time. One was Solly (apparently he tried to go the wrong way up an escalator) a small batman to one of the officers. Another was Frank. Frank wanted to be a drummer and he would continually drum away on the table with his fingers . He was tall and had black brylcreamed hair. He was also keen on my oldest sister. She did not reciprocate (as far as

Heydon Hall and village residents invite visitors to stop and smell the roses

Residents of Heydon are inviting visitors to stop and smell the roses this Father’s Day, Sunday 19 June, and to explore the gardens of Heydon Hall – which are rarely open to the public – plus a variety of gardens in their historic, picturesque village.

Charles Shippam - PCC Treasurer, Heydon (Parish) and village resident - explained“Heydon Hall and Village Open Gardens Day provides a wonderful opportunity for visitors to discover one of the prettiest villages in Norfolk and take a stroll through the gardens of Heydon Hall, The Grange, The Old Rectory, The Old Cottage, Poppyland, and others. There will also be a display by North Norfolk Classic Vehicle Club, entertainment by Holt Ridge Morris dancers, a plant stall, and refreshments on the village green.”

He added “Heydon is one of less than a dozen privately owned villages in Great Britain and became Norfolk's first

we know), but she has always had to endure teasing about him. For quite a time we had a Major (or was it Captain) King billited with us.

He and his wife had what was then called The Lounge – it later became the games room and then my office. I wonder what happened to the Kings? The army must have been very lax during the wartime. As boys we would go up what is now the Warren Road where the ammunition dumps were kept. We shouldn’t have done it but it was very tempting to go into these and take a few thunderflashers. After all we didn’t have any fireworks in those days and thunderflashers were far better than anything that could later be bought from the shops. There were also ammunition stores in the hillside below what was then the Links Hotel (now The Country Club). Again these were very insecurely boarded up and didn’t present much of an obstacle to young boys. I don’t suppose many know where they were but I took a photo recently of a depression in the hillside near where Elizabeth Fry used to preach.

During the war we had our two grandmothers staying with us for quite a time. They both seemed incredibly old and I suppose they were at that time. One was early 70’s and the other late 70’s. They used to share a double bed in room 10. In those days bedrooms were not heated so I suppose it helped to keep them warm. Our sitting room (known as the little room) was immediately under them and we could hear them chuntering away to each other in the evenings. They must have gone to bed very early if I was still up. One night (I think Peter Coman may have been with me) we quietly opened the door and crawled into the room and under the bed. Laying on our backs we put our feet onto the bed springs and pushed up and down until we could no longer conceal our laughter at which time we again quietly crawled away. They never did know what had happened. The house did often shake during air raids!

But enough about the war – time to move on.

conservation area in 1971. Heydon is also currently home to six County Wildlife Sites; has won Best Kept Village on two occasions and has been the setting of numerous film and TV productions.”

Heydon Hall and Village Open Gardens Day will take place on Sunday 19 June between 2pm and 5pm. Admission to the Heydon Hall gardens costs £3 per person and entry to the Heydon village gardens costs an additional £3 per person – however, there is no admission charge for children 14 years and under. Car parking is also free. Dogs on leads are welcome in Heydon Hall Park. Admission tickets can be purchased on the day at the main gates to Heydon Hall and on Heydon village green.

Heydon is situated 15 miles north west of Norwich, off the B1149 Norwich to Holt road (postcode for sat nav is NR11 6AD).

Payment of a brother’s private school fees held to be in ‘best interests’ of his sister Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

In the case of David Ross v A [2015] a girl (called ‘A’ in the case) had been brain-damaged after birth as a result of medical negligence. The parents settled for an award of £5 million. A professional person was appointed by the Court of Protection (‘the Court’) to manage A’s finances (known as the ‘Deputy’ – ‘D’). He spoke warmly of the excellent care that A’s parents gave her at home. D approved various payments out of A’s award, including the costs of adapting the family home. D thought that external care packages would have been much more expensive and much less good.

A’s brother (‘B’) inevitably suffered as a result of his sister’s condition and had problems at his primary school and failed to get a place at the selective state senior school of his choice. B was described as having great potential to achieve with the right education.

D, at the request of the family, made an application to the Court to authorise the payment of private school fees for B out of A’s award. The application was lost in the Court system for nearly 2 years and, in that intervening period, D paid B’s school fees out of A’s fund, in the hope that the Court would retrospectively authorise the expenditure.

The Official Solicitor (“OS”) was appointed to represent A’s interests and opposed the application. He claimed repayment of the school fees that had already been paid.

The OS argued that A had never assumed the financial responsibility and was not responsible for causing harm to her brother, as a result of her condition. The OS argued that D had to represent the interests of A only, and not B’s and the wider family.

Senior Judge Lush allowed D’s application for the payment of B’s school fees and castigated the OS for his “unnecessary intrusive and hostile approach”. Judge Lush criticised the “microscopic scrutiny” by OS of D’s expenditure

and the OS’s condemnation of the family’s dependence on the award. Judge Lush said that the family were dependent on A’s award in the same way as A was dependent upon her family for care and said that “it was insensitive and demeaning to stigmatise them for deciding to sacrifice their own careers and earning-potential by staying at home and caring for their profoundly disabled child on a full-time basis.”

Judge Lush noted a range of factors. These included that the family were living well within the awarded sum, which had in fact grown in size. It would continue to be sustainable, even with the payment of school fees. Mutual dependency was inevitable and B’s needs were important. If the parents went back to work and paid for external carers it would have more than doubled the family’s outgoings. Judge Lush said that the OS’s approach was “unnecessarily cautious, paternalistic and risk-averse and would have the effect of stifling the family’s hopes and aspirations”.

A’s ‘best interests’ (as defined by the Mental Capacity Act) were difficult to determine, but the views of the parents and D were considered important. However, the case is not a precedent for the payment of school fees in similar situations.

CAN YOU FIND ROOM IN YOUR HEART AND HOME TO FOSTER OR ADOPT AN UNWANTED GREYHOUND?

Norfolk Greyhound Rescue are appealing for people to adopt unwanted racing greyhounds and are particularly seeking those wonderful souls who feel able to offer foster homes to these gentle creatures.

Their aim is to transport greyhounds from Ireland, where many of these hounds are bred. Whether they have raced or not, many end up unwanted and at serious risk. Unlike some charities, NGR pride themselves on the fact that everything is volunteer-led and nobody in the organisation takes payment for their efforts. They genuinely do it for our love of the hounds!

NGR is also happy to be hosting the Cromer ‘leg’ of the Great Global Greyhound Walk on Sunday 19 June, starting at Runton Rd Car Park at 10.30am and walking the Promenade and Pier. This event takes place all over the UK and also abroad, when thousands of greyhounds are walked to raise awareness of greyhounds as lovely pets. See

walk is for Greyhounds and other Sighthounds only. Happily, the message is gradually getting across about what lovely pets greyhounds make. Generally they are gentle, quiet and lazy pets, requiring much less exercise than you would think. They prefer sleeping to anything else, except perhaps for treats. They have occasional crazy, kooky moments where they show what clowns they can be! This combination is usually enough to steal the heart of any dog-loving human. Fosterers would have all the dog's expenses paid whilst the hound is in their care. It works for caring people who cannot have another dog permanently but who are happy to share their lives with a greyhound until he/she goes to their adopted family. It's also a good way to see whether you enjoy the company of a greyhound.

Fostering is a very fulfilling role - it's all about saving greyhound lives and preparing them for a forever home. For each hound found a foster home in or around Norfolk, a space is cleared for another to go into a rescue kennel in Ireland.

YOU HAVE GOAT TO BE KIDDING ME!

North Norfolk District Council brings Britain’s oldest breed of goat to Cromer cliff to control scrubland

A new habitat management project by NNDC hopes to keep an area of Cromer cliff under control with the introduction of goats. Eight Bagot billy goats will be released into a fenced off area in June where their grazing will keep unwanted plant species and excessive growth to a minimum. In the past, the cliff area has become overgrown, leading to a problem with litter embedded and snagged in bushes. The Bagot goats graze on rough materials rather than grass and will therefore keep plant growth over the area under control. Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said “This is an exciting project we hope the people of Cromer will be able to enjoy two-fold – for the habitat management the goats will offer and the enjoyment of having unusual animals in the town. “Now residents and visitors will not only be able to enjoy the beautiful Cromer sunsets, but watch our Billy goats working hard to keep the town beautiful.” The Bagot is believed to be Britain’s oldest breed of goat and unlike most other breeds - that favour mountains and uplands - it developed in the English lowlands. Bagots are hardy and easy to tame. NNDC’s Cromer goats have been checked and monitored by a local vet and their welfare will continue to be appraised over their time on Cromer cliff. They will be surrounded by double livestock fencing that will be six foot tall at the bottom of the slope. The fences will be checked twice a day. Cllr Fitch-Tillett added “We must ask people not to feed or touch the goats because they have a job of work to do and we need them to not get distracted.” The habitat grazing project was developed with support from Suffolk Wildlife Trust and the goats arrived with the District Council in April. Two came from the Dinosaur Park near Lenwade in Norfolk, and the other six from Levens Hall, Cumbria where they are raised as a semi-feral parkland breed. They have spent the past weeks getting used to one another and settling into their new group. The goats will be released into the fenced-off area in June and remain until October or November when they will be taken to other NNDC land to graze over the winter. If the goats clear the land too rapidly they will be moved to other land for grazing.

Crab Gnocchi

We had a great weekend at the annual Crab and Lobster Festival in May; two of our top chefs Lewis and Simon put on some excellent demonstrations using some of the finest seafood in the world to packed audiences. We are so lucky to have such incredible fresh ingredients on our doorstep and a big thank you to John Davies and the whole Festival team for putting on a wonderful event. Roll on next year! This gnocchi wasn’t on our demonstration stall but it is a really tasty, slightly unusual dish to prepare and enjoy (perhaps with something chilled and dry…!) as you sit out in the garden this summer. Alternatively, put the cooking to one side and come and see us for dinner; 6 – 9pm every evening! Ingredients

250 g Potatoes (floury) 80g Plain Flour Pinch of Salt & Pepper 1 Egg Yolk Chopped Parsley 1 Whole Dressed Crab Juice of half a Lemon Method

1. Bake potatoes in oven until soft. 2. Once cooked leave to cool for 5 – 10 minutes until easily handled.

3. Cut the potatoes in half and scrape the contents into a mixing bowl. 4. Add flour until you have a dough like consistency. 5. Add parsley, seasoning, egg yolk and mix through. 6. Add crab meat and lemon juice. 7. Portion dough out into quarters and roll out one quarter into a long sausage shape. 8. Portion into bite size pieces and shape. 9. Cook gnocchi in boiling salted water for approximately 3 minutes. 10. Pan fry to finish.

A summer scene

I walked up the hill and down to the stream, and drew in my breath at the colourful scene. A field of corn stirred in the breeze, sheep quietly grazed beneath the trees. Poppies, daisies and buttercups too helped to form this wonderful view. I sat and enjoyed my bread and cheese whilst listening to the hum of bees. Much later, I felt a chill as the sun went down behind the hill. Now it was time to cycle home, there’ll be other days when I can roam.

North Norfolk District Council hosts new exhibition inspired by Norfolk’s farming heritage

NNDC’s public art gallery is presenting a visually bold new exhibition ‘Back to the Barn’ by local artist Catherine Hall.

The exhibition, running from 3 May to 12 July, reflects Catherine’s upbringing on her family’s Norfolk livestock farm surrounded by animals, woodland and fields. Her accessible and warm representation of farm animals against bright block-colour backgrounds brings modernity to a traditional subject.

Aylmerton resident Catherine said “‘Back to the Barn’ is extremely meaningful to me in so many ways looking back on where I've come from and taking in all the beauty we've taken for granted around us and bringing it out on canvas. I love watching the characters emerge and recreating their personalities.”

NNDC seeks to offer free opportunities to local artists to display their work in the 1st Floor Gallery in the Council’s Holt Road offices in Cromer. Currently six exhibitions are held annually.

Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture said “It’s great to be able to offer artists a space to exhibit their works for the public to appreciate. ‘Back to the Barn’ is a super collection of paintings and prints and we are pleased to be able to host them.”

The NNDC Gallery is open to the public on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8.30am – 5pm, Wednesday 10am – 5pm and Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm.

Trio Compete at Regional Gymnastic Final

In early April, 12 gymnasts from North Walsham Gymnastic Club attended the UEA to compete at the Norfolk County Grades where they passed with flying colours, with many achieving a distinction for their efforts! Olivia Shingles, Tia Talbot and Tilly Owen came in the top three in their individual groups, qualifying to represent the County at the Regional finals. On Sunday 1 May, the three gymnasts together with their head coach and some younger gymnasts and parents who were inspired by the girls previous achievement at the UEA so came along for support and to cheer them on, set off for Pipers Vale Gymnastic

The Club is continuing to progress with securing their own premises. Head coach Alexis Thurston said “We’ve had some amazing support with our recent ‘Go Fund Me’ fundraiser for our foam pit. The gymnasts, coaches, parents, friends and families have donated very generously and we have so far managed to raise a massive £3,791. Other local charities have also been donating to our cause as well as many other organisations who have contributed to the cost of new equipment that will be required when the time comes to move.” The ‘Go Fund Me’ campaign is ongoing, donations and enquiries can be made via the website www.north-walsham-gymnastics-club.co.uk

Worstead Pre-School

Worstead Pre-Schoolers enjoyed a sponsored woodland walk, raising lots of money to buy sports equipment to expand the range of events the children take part in during their multi-sport's sessions.

The weather kept fine and all the children managed to walk approximately two miles, looking and counting mini-beasts as they went. The walk was further enhanced by the children

limbing an old oak tree and swinging on a rope swing and finally having a picnic - great fun was had by all!

The Pre-School takes children aged from two to five years, and can provide some funded places for two year olds as well as those who will be three in the term following their third birthday. Anyone who would like to visit the Pre-school or add their child's name to our waiting list should telephone Sue or Paula on 01692 535692.

Having experienced war zones and their effect on people first hand, James chose to support the charity Help for Heroes for his cycle ride.

Prior to the event, James will be aiming to cycle 200 miles on his trainer at Morrisons in Cromer on 9 July and would be grateful for any donations in his bucket so please do look out for him. His Just Giving Page is https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/James-Daintree

He will start from Land’s End on 30 August and finish in John O’Groats on 11 September covering a distance of approximately 1000 miles over 12 days. He has been training for the event for about a year and has lost around four stone in weight!

RNLI lifeguard service in partnership with North Norfolk District Council returns for 10th anniversary season patrolling Norfolk beaches The RNLI, the charity that saves lives at sea, first teamed up with North Norfolk District Council in 2007 to provide beach patrols at Cromer, Sheringham, Mundesley and Sea Palling. A decade later the service has expanded along the East Anglia coast to 16 beaches, including at West Runton (new for this year), East Runton and Wells in North Norfolk, as well as beaches in the Great Yarmouth area and Suffolk.

Four veteran RNLI lifeguards have been ever present since that first day 10 years ago - Vincent Pank, Sam Kendrick, Scott Davidson and Chris Wall. Vincent, who has risen through the ranks to become Lifeguard Manager, said ‘We were breaking new ground when we took on the lifeguard service for North Norfolk District Council in 2007, as it was the first time RNLI lifeguards had patrolled anywhere on the east coast of the UK. ‘It’s been an incredible 10 years since then, saving lives and keeping people safe. We have gone from having 15 lifeguards patrolling a handful of beaches to employing around 65 people at 16 locations along the length of the Norfolk coast and into Suffolk. ‘So much has happened throughout the past decade, but most rewarding for me is seeing how our presence and reputation has grown within the communities we work in. I think we were seen as a novelty at the start, but we’ve earned the trust and respect of people who now seek out our advice, whether that is the public, lifeboat crews, emergency services or landowners.’ Leader of North Norfolk District Council Cllr Tom FitzPatrick said ‘We’re proud of what has been achieved in partnership with the RNLI over the past 10 years.

‘Ensuring the safety of our beaches is paramount and having lifeguards on duty when North Norfolk is at its busiest means visitors and residents can have peace of mind while enjoying our beautiful coastline. ‘The lifeguards are a skilled team and our admiration and thanks go to all of them for their dedication and bravery over the past decade.’ Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture said ‘Our beaches, four of which have Blue Flag status, are enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people each year. The hard work of the RNLI lifeguards has kept these people safe.’

The wages for RNLI lifeguards along the North Norfolk coast at Cromer, Sea Palling, Sheringham, Mundesley are funded by NNDC, with training, equipment, lifeguard stations, vehicles, support services and management all provided by the RNLI. Within the NNDC purvey there are three permanent lifeguard units at Wells, Sea Palling and Sheringham West. Temporary units have been installed at Sheringham East, West Runton, East Runton, Cromer West, Cromer East and Mundesley. They will be taken down in September. Since 2010* RNLI lifeguards in East Anglia have saved 18 lives, rescued 177 people and given medical care 4,001 times.

RNLI lifeguards resumed patrols of five beaches in Norfolk on Saturday 7 May (Sheringham West, Cromer East, Mundesley, Sea Palling and Gorleston) and two in Suffolk on 21 May (Lowestoft South and Southwold North). A further nine beaches will be patrolled from Saturday 2 July. These are Wells, Sheringham East, West Runton, East Runton, Cromer West, Hemsby,

Front row L-R Cabinet Member for Leisure Cllr Becky Palmer, Cllr Judy Oliver (Sheringham South), NNDC Leader Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Cabinet Member for Coastal Management Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, Cllr Nigel Pearce (Suffield Park), Cllr Sarah Butikofer (West Runton). Back row L-R RNLI lifeguards Chris Wall, Vincent Pank, Scott Davidson and Sam Kendrick. Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft North and Southwold South.

Anyone interested in getting a job as an RNLI beach lifeguard can contact Vincent at Vincent_pank@rnli.org.uk or give him a call on 07917 581567. * The RNLI changed the way it recorded lifeguard statistics in 2010. Statistics are not available for previous years.

OVERSTRAND OPEN GARDENS 2016

Calling all gardeners – it’s a must do day on Sunday 19 June when the gardens of Overstrand will be open to the public.

This is a chance to see over the wall and gates of the private gardens of village residents. And

to add to the fun of the day there is a ‘Flower Pot Sculpture Trail’ that is sure to keep the children amused and indeed delight a few of the ‘grown-ups’.

The event is organised by Overstrand Together and brings the spotlight to gardens, large and small, all with their very own character and charm. Tickets and maps will be available from the Overstrand Sport Ground on the day. The Sports Club Bar will be open for refreshments

‘George the Second’ donates to Cromer RNLI Last month Cromer RNLI had an unusual request regarding a bequest of a Swaffham man who died in March.

George Atkinson was keen that money be donated to Cromer RNLI. Relatives of the gentleman, affectionately known

with stalls on the edge of the Cricket Field selling plants and garden sundries.

If you live in Overstrand there is still a chance to enter your garden or create a potty sculpture and join in the fun. Entry is free and who knows you might be able to sell the odd plant from your garden. Entry details can be obtained by emailing drolph@uwclub.net

as ‘George the Second’, contacted the station to inform them that George had died just two weeks before his 105th birthday.

Despite more than 90 years of attempts, the 104-year-old had never backed a winner at the Grand National. He had once again hoped to turn his luck around when he planned to place a bet on his 105th birthday in February 2016. George had led a very full life, serving in the forces during the Ssecond World War. These experiences had given him a long respect and interest for the RNLI and George was always keen to hear about the work carried out at Cromer’s lifeboat station. Members of the crew had visited him in his home to talk about recent launches. George’s grandson in law Barry Willett, visited the station to present a cheque to Cromer RNLI. Barry said ‘George was an inspiration to everyone and always had a positive outlook on life. Until last year George was to be found at his local supermarket on his mobility scooter collecting money for the RNLI. We have now carried out his last request that this wonderful organisation should benefit.’

New Resident at Lloyd Court – Ollie Lloyd Lloyd Court, Housing with Care scheme, run by Norsecare in High Kelling near Holt, have welcomed a new friend. But this one is a little different.

Ollie Lloyd the owl (known as Ollie to his friends!) perched in his custom twisted willow tree, has been generously donated by roadside chainsaw carver, Arnie Barton, as a gift for all the tenants of Lloyd Court to enjoy.

Adorable Ollie Lloyd The owl, who has taken up residency at Lloyd Court in High Kelling

The owl in a tree sculpture is one of only two of its kind to date, which Arnie says is a unique design of his own. The tree is made from various pieces of salvaged branches and topped with one of Arnie’s Talented Chainsaw Carver, popular chainsaw Arnie Barton, in action, at carved owls. his roadside ‘workshop’.

22 | north norfolk post | june 2016

Arnie claims to have been interested in woodwork from a young age, and has previously worked as a bench joiner, building luxury Fairline boats. Looking to earn a living and alternative lifestyle for himself and his girlfriend, Arnie took up chainsaw carving, and quickly fell in love with the art, in which he is incredibly talented.

When he is not driving around in his carving customised van, Arnie can often be seen working and displaying his sculptures on the A148 between Cromer and Aylmerton, but he also creates commission pieces and attends shows and events, where he demonstrates his skill, and offers sculptures for sale. The tree sculptures, like the one donated to Lloyd court, can be topped with any choice of carvings, including squirrels, birds and bugs!

Lloyd Court Manager, Marie

Quantrill said “I didn’t know anything about Arnie’s generous donation at first. It was a surprise organised between himself and our Business Administrator, Lucy Cubitt. I was absolutely thrilled to discover what Arnie had made for us, and all the tenants, staff and visitors have commented on how beautiful Ollie is!”

Tenants at Lloyd Court were asked to suggest names from the owl and, from the most popular suggestions, Norsecare Regional Director, Roy Slater, said, “Ollie’ is a good choice by the tenants. Let’s give him a full title ‘Ollie Lloyd’; fitting for our new friend.”

The legal consequences of dementia

By Lin Whitehead, Partner and Head of Wills, Trusts and Probate Department

There may be a time when you can no longer share of communicate what you think, or you cannot make decision over your finances or legal affairs. This may be due to the development of a medical condition such as dementia. If you are affected by dementia you will need to consider the legal and financial implications for you and your family. The Legal consequences of dementia When you or someone you care about has been diagnosed with dementia you should consider whether two legal documents are in place – a Will and a Lasting (LPA) Power of Attorney (LPA). Why is a Will important? Having a Will allows you to decide what happens to your property and possessions and choose who they go to. Wills can be put in place using Trusts to protect your property and to ensure beneficiaries in receipt of means-tested benefits don’t lose their entitlements through an inheritance. You will need to have capacity to make or change an existing Will. If you have dementia you may still be able to make a new Will or change your Will, but you should speak to your solicitor who may also need to contact your GP to check you do have capacity. Why is a Lasting or Enduring Power of Attorney important? If you lose the ability to manage your own financial affairs, a partner or family member cannot automatically deal with things on your behalf. Having a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place is just as important as

having a Will. It gives you the reassurance of knowing your wishes will be respected if you become unable to make decisions for yourself and it enables people you choose to have access to your finances to make payments on your behalf. If you have not made an Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney it is still possible for someone who care for you to be appointed on your behalf to take decisions for you. You would need to make an application to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship. A Deputy does the same job as an Attorney, but the application is time consuming, expensive and may not result in the person / people you want managing your affairs, as the Deputy is chosen by the Court, not you. It is better to make a Lasting Power of Attorney as it is quicker, cheaper ad you choose your Attorney. The Financial consequences of dementia Following a diagnosis of dementia you may be worried and it makes good sense to take steps to ensure financial matters are taken care of. You should check you are getting all the help and state benefits you are entitled to, e.g do you qualify for Attendance Allowance? If you have concerns about your legal affairs in later life, please call 01263 823398 and speak to Lin or email lin@clapham-collinge.co.uk

Clapham & Collinge regularly hold ‘Dementia Awareness Sessions’ with Dementia Friends, to help spread the word about dementia, understand what it’s like to live with dementia and create a dementia friendly community. Old Pastonian Masonic Lodge Celebrations

Celebrations took place recently for the 50th Anniversary of the consecration of the Old Pastonian Masonic Lodge. The event, which was marked by a White Table event attended by over 80 members, friends and family, took place at St Giles in Norwich. The Lodge was founded in 1966, and was closely linked to the Paston Grammar School, North Walsham. In recent years it has opened its membership to those with no previous connection to the school, which became a college in 1984 following the merger of the Paston Grammar School with the North Walsham Girls High School. Steve Baker (pictured centre) is the current Master of the Lodge, and said that the event was notable for a number of reasons “My father was one of the founding members back in 1966, so to be able to mark the occasion was also a tribute to those involved in the forming of that lodge at that time. Having the celebration also provided an opportunity to reminds us of the role of freemasonry in the local community by enjoying historic ceremony, and engaging with local and

Shelley Hewitt eventually contacted North Norfolk Member of Parliament Norman Lamb who is demanding urgent action from energy firm Scottish Power.

A group of residents of Wells-next-the-Sea have spent more than a year battling with an energy firm that has failed to fix billing problems for a development of new homes.

Mr Lamb met with residents on Monday 16 May. Mr Lamb said This whole episode has been a nightmare for residents. I visited the site when it was being converted to homes and there was a real sense of excitement and opportunity about the development. Tenants’ experiences with Scottish Power have caused anxiety and real distress. There seems to have been a real break down in Scottish Power’s processes and a huge failure in customer relations. It is vital that Scottish Power sort this out straight away.”

The Old School on Polka Road was converted to homes by non-profit housing provider, Homes for Wells. Tenants moved in in February 2015. Since that time, residents have been battling with Scottish Power, trying to get the firm to bill tenants correctly for gas and electricity. One resident, Shelley Hewitt, has received incorrect demands for payment of more than £1,000 relating to energy used in other properties. She has made numerous telephone calls to

Norwich City End of Season Roundup by Joel Lodge

Norwich City endured a season of what could have been. They missed out on plenty of opportunities to gain points throughout the season and have ultimately come up short, finishing in 19th place along with Aston Villa and Newcastle.

There were a few games in particular that had large contributions in Norwich’s downfall - the first of which being a 6-2 loss against Newcastle away in mid-October.

I believe this was pivotal as it was our first major loss of the season in terms of the amount of goals we conceded.

I believe this really psychologically damaged the teams spirit going into the rest of the season. Another key game that contributed to the relegation of Norwich was in late January when they fell to a 5-4 loss at home to Liverpool, I feel as

A North Norfolk Nissan dealership has raised more than £12,000 for the British Paralympic Association in support of the carmaker’s role as Official Automotive Partner of ParalympicsGB.

Crayford and Abbs Nissan in Gypsies Lane, Holt, generated the cash through a series of fundraisers helping to supercharge ParalympicsGB’s assault on the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

First, staff, friends and customers of the dealership cycled, swam and ran almost 12,000 miles – the distance from North Norfolk to Rio and back – raising almost £6,000. They also completed a six-and-a-half hour cross trainer marathon at a nearby supermarket in Cromer.

Then, on Saturday evening, a black tie charity dinner and auction at the Links Hotel, West Runton, gave the coffers a further boost, taking the grand total beyond the £10,000 mark.

The charity dinner featured an inspiring talk by Duncan Slater an injured ex-serviceman who walked to the South Pole with Prince Harry and had just returned from running six marathons in six days in the Sahara Desert for the charity Walking With the Wounded.

This is why Norwich City needs to have a summer of transition and an overhaul in the boardroom as well as with the playing staff. Norwich have already made progress by sacking David McNally and they need to stop being sentimental with players if they want to progress as a club and turn into a secure and stable Premier League side rather than being a yo-yo club.

Luckily, his son is now a healthy 21 year old but sadly there are others who have not been so lucky. His family has raised a staggering £50,000 over the past few years for Meningitis Now.
