LOCAL MP HIGHLIGHTS CHARITY FUNDING OPPORTUNITY APPLY FOR UP TO £20,000 FOR YOUR CHARITY GROUP IN 2018
Local MP Norman Lamb is asking community groups and local charities across North Norfolk to think about what they could do with up to £20,000 this year.
Charities and community groups can apply to receive grants of between £500 and £20,000 raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Between 14 and 28 February 2018, charities are being urged to submit an expression of interest in the funding, which requires basic details about the organisation, as well as a very short description of the project they are proposing. We want to encourage charities to grab this opportunity so that they can continue to make a huge difference to communities around the country.”
Norman Lamb MP said “North Norfolk is home to some fantastic charities which I've had the honour of working with over the years. I'd encourage as many local charities in my constituency and Norfolk as a whole to apply for this additional funding. It's a great opportunity."
The funding is made available through three different charitable trusts depending on the type of project:
• People’s Postcode Trust seeks applications for projects that focus on the prevention of poverty, promotion of human rights and equal rights. • Postcode Local Trust supports community gardens, play areas, wildlife and green energy projects. • Postcode Community Trust focuses on grass-roots sports, arts, recreation and healthy living programmes. For more information on how to apply for funding, please visit the Trusts’ websites :

Players of People’s Postcode Lottery have raised more than £263 million to date for over 4,000 good causes across Great Britain and internationally. A minimum of 32% from each ticket goes to charities.

Step closer to a cure for Parkinson’s in Norfolk
People in Norfolk are being asked to unite with thousands of others across the UK and step closer to a cure for Parkinson’s. Walk for Parkinson’s at Blickling Estate takes place on Saturday 12 May, and is one of a series of walk events to be held across the UK for Parkinson’s UK during 2018.
There are a range of distances on offer to suit everyone, with a two-mile, 3.5-mile and 5.5-mile walk to choose from. So whether you’re up for a challenging walk or a gentle stroll, there is something for everyone. Team entries are welcome, so why not sign up with your friends, family and colleagues.
Walking and other types of exercise is particularly important for people with Parkinson’s as research shows that two and half hours of exercise a week can help slow progression of symptoms. Exercise also has a positive impact on wellbeing and mental health.
Sky Sports Presenter and Champion of Walking for Parkinson’s UK Dave Clark was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2011. He is a keen walker himself and is encouraging people to get involved.
He said “We want to make 2018 our biggest year yet for the Walk for Parkinson’s series. I’d like to invite everyone, whatever their level of fitness, to take advantage of the many different types of walks, scenic routes and distances available. Exercise can be really beneficial to people living with Parkinson’s. It is as important to me as my medication in helping me take control and manage my symptoms.
“So please join us at Walk for Parkinson’s – Blickling Estate . Every step takes us closer to a cure and our goal of improving the lives of everyone affected by Parkinson’s”.
The registration fee is £10 for adults and £5 for under 16s. Everyone who registers will receive a free Walk for Parkinson’s t-shirt, walk fundraising pack and a finishers medal.

Last year’s Walk for Parkinson’s series had more than 4,300 people sign up to walk and between them they raised £417,700.
All money raised by Walk for Parkinson’s will be used to help find better treatments, and ultimately a cure, as well as providing support and information for the 145,000 people affected by Parkinson’s across the UK. As well as walkers, the charity is on the lookout for volunteers to help on the day.

TRUSTEES NEEDED FOR LOCAL CHARITY Have you been wondering about volunteering some time for a good cause, but want to use your particular gifts and skills? Newly retired with some energy and enthusiasm, or in work but wanting to “give something back to your community? Age Concern North Norfolk is a self-funded charity, based in Sheringham, working for the benefit of older people across central North Norfolk. It supports people aged 50+ (some with dementia) by providing a Day Services Hub, lunch club, Keep In Touch clubs, intergenerational activities and a Drop In/Befriending service. If you have financial, human resources or past business expertise, your skills will be particularly valuable, but we welcome expressions of interest from all individuals who are willing to commit approximately 3-4 hours a month to volunteering with us as a Trustee. Trustees usually serve for a period of 3 years and then can stand for re-election for a further period. You will be joining a team of dedicated people who will offer support whether you are new to this kind of volunteering or whether you are a seasoned volunteer. We will value your unique skills and innovative ideas, together with support for fund raising events. We hold a trustees meeting currently once a month on a Thursday afternoon, and meet for a shared lunch beforehand at the Day Services Hub in Sheringham. Full information on what being a trustee involves is available at https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/charity-commission If you are interested, please contact the Day Centre Manager, Angela Reith, in the first instance. Masons Cheque Boosts MS Day Centre
Freemasons from the North Walsham Lodge of Unanimity No 102 have been raising funds for ‘LAMS’ (Life And Multiple Sclerosis), which is a day centre for people with the condition. It meets every week in Southrepps Village Hall and is an activity of the North Norfolk Group of the MS Society.
Worshipful Master Bob Wilkinson, who has just completed his year in the Chair, choose LAMS as his charity for the year and was very pleased to be able to go along to the day centre recently and present a cheque for ÂŁ3,400. Sue Wright who is group co-ordinator said the money would go towards the general running of the group, providing activities and support the cost of an outing or two during the year. Carers (often family members) can also benefit from having some time to themselves - a really important aspect of providing this centre.
W.Bro Ian Walker who is the Lodge Charity Steward said “2017 has been a special year, as the United Grand lodge of England celebrated its 300th Anniversary. Masonic Lodges up and down the country donate millions of pounds to charities, medical research and good causes every year and it’s great to be a member of such a historic and charitable organisation.

Sheringham Shoal helps to sustain community well-being activities in Wells-next-the-Sea
As a result of a grant from the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund, Wells Community Hospital will be delivering an enhanced range of well-being activities during 2018, which will help to further strengthen the role played by this important facility in the port town of Wells-next-the-Sea.
In line with the Government's agenda for independent living, Wells Community Hospital provides a range of services and clinics for local residents and the many tourists who now visit the town all the year around. However, the funding criteria relating to community hospitals across the UK means the Hospital Trustees and management team have to look at generating income from external sources in
order to ensure the sustainability of the hospital facilities.
The Hospital's Community Well-Being Hub is an initiative which provides training services to businesses in and around Wells-next-the-Sea, and it recognises that the local economy is primarily driven by marine activity, tourism and agriculture. Courses covering food hygiene, health and safety and first aid already help local businesses comply with their statutory requirements, and 2018 will see the introduction of safeguarding training in respect of both children and adults. "The grant from the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund will make a huge difference to the development of the Community Well-being Hub," said Samantha Taylor, General Manager of Wells Community Hospital. "It will enable my team to focus on the marketing and delivery of our enhanced range of training services, which in turn will free up the Trustees to concentrate on the further development of a multi-million
pound scheme to establish an intermediate bedded unit [48 beds] to serve the needs of local residents."
The Sheringham Shoal Community Fund, which is operated by the Norfolk Community Foundation receives ÂŁ100,000 each year from the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm to support projects that make a difference to the North Norfolk community, tackling issues including climate change, sustainable communities, marine environment/safety, renewable energy and education/employment.

Woman given suspended jail sentence for animal cruelty at illegal puppy farm
Successful prosecution brought by North Norfolk District Council A woman has been jailed for 22 weeks –suspended for two years – after pleading guilty to two charges of keeping a dog-breeding establishment without a licence, and a further 15 charges of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal or failing to ensure the welfare of an animal.
Rosemary Fabb, of Carr Lane, Roughton, near Cromer, was sentenced at Norwich Magistrates’ Court after being caught in an undercover sting by North Norfolk District Council officers. Mrs Fabb was also ordered to pay NNDC’s full costs, of £12,616, as well as a victim surcharge.
Mrs Fabb had been running an unlicensed puppy farm from outbuildings at her home address. Following indications that Mrs Fabb was breeding without a licence, North Norfolk District Council officers visited the premises in early 2017 and bought a puppy. A warrant was then obtained and NNDC officers accompanied by the police and a vet returned to the site in February last year. A number of dirty, matted and unsocialised dogs were found on the premises, living in cold and small pens in agricultural outbuildings that
contained faeces and urine. There was evidence of a breeding operation and no indication that the dogs had been let out of their pens. Despite a number of dogs being kept in each pen, only one basket per pen was provided, and most of those lacked any bedding. The vet found that many of the dogs had untreated illnesses and conditions.
Last November, Mrs Fabb pleaded guilty to operating a dog-breeding establishment without a licence but not guilty to a number of charges relating to animal welfare, and a trial date was set. Since then, a further visit was made to her premises, in January this year, when more evidence of an unlicensed dog-breeding establishment was found. The condition of the premises had deteriorated further, and this visit resulted in a number of further animal-welfare charges and one further dog-breeding charge being brought. Mrs Fabb signed the dogs over to the RSPCA to avoid them being seized by NNDC, and all 10 dogs have now been rehomed. Cllr Richard Price, North Norfolk District Council Portfolio Holder for Licensing, said “This shows that we can and we will prosecute, and it should be a warning for others. We don’t take enforcement lightly but we do take animal welfare very seriously, and our licensing team will take action whenever necessary. It also highlights the usefulness of the Regulatory Investigatory Powers Act 2000, which helped us secure the evidence required to prosecute this case.”

Debunking of January Divorce Rush
Clapham & Collinge Family Law Update by Neale Grearson
Recent statistics that have been published throw doubt on whether there is a rush for people to start Divorce Proceedings in January. Historically the media has drawn attention to what has been dubbed “D Day” being the first Monday in January when allegedly the most number of divorces are started in a year.
The figures that have been recently produced reveal that in fact more divorces are started in other periods during the year than the first quarter of the calendar year. In fact the attention drawn to “D Day” by the media and Solicitors has been criticised as resulting in more marriages coming to an end! Correctly (but perhaps cynically) it has also been pointed out that with the substantial delays that there are now with the centralised divorce arrangements to be able to time the starting of a divorce to a particular day at the beginning of January is almost impossible – but it did make good headlines!
There is always a period (sometimes short and sometimes long) between somebody deciding their marriage is over and the Proceedings actually being commenced. Solicitors will see clients at all stages in the breakdown of a relationship although very often clients only seek to instruct a Solicitor when they have already decided that their marriage is at an end and there is no prospect of a reconciliation. Solicitors will always talk to clients about the prospects of marriage guidance or counselling assisting but other than on rare occasions when an early meeting is sought very often people make decisions based on the ending of a relationship without first taking legal advice. It is the repercussions of that breakdown and possible divorce that people then take advice upon from a Family Solicitor.
There therefore appear to be no genuine “highs” or “lows” when more or less divorces are started during a year. However there are key “pinch points” when pressure is put on relationships and very often these relate to occasions when couples are forced into a 24/7 situation such as over Christmas or for long holidays together. It is therefore a little unrealistic to continue to
talk about “D Day” or January being the key period when divorces are started.
Would You Pay Extra Tax To Fund Legal Aid? There has been a lot of recent national debate about whether everyone should accept an increase in their income tax to better fund the NHS system. When legal aid was cut some years ago for the majority of people this was done purely on financial grounds. In essence there was not enough money to go round and so choices had to be made. There were stringent cuts in the old family legal aid system now leaving many people not being able to afford to take advice from a Solicitor. It does seem that whatever political party will be in Government in the foreseeable future it is very unlikely that the legal aid system will change. Certainly there is nothing on the agenda of any of the parties to suggest that money will be set aside to resurrect the old legal aid system for civil work and in particular family advice. Would you agree to pay more income tax to be able to fund the divorce of somebody who financially cannot afford to pay for it themselves? Whilst this is simplistic in essence that is one of the choices that the Government has to make. The emphasis therefore seems to be on who needs protection or support in priority to somebody else. Domestic violence has been identified as a key area where someone who is financially eligible should have
Waveney Stardust Trust
The boats are nearly ready! Despite the cold snap, plans are well advanced for the new season for Waveney Stardust Trust.
Waveney Stardust is a charity that began in 1988 with the aim of helping the elderly and people with disabilities to enjoy the waterways of Norfolk in a safe and easily accessible environment at a reduced cost. The charity now has two specially adapted cruisers with ramps, lifts and open plan level floors to provide safe access for people and wheelchairs. The boats are run by highly trained volunteers who take parties of up to 12 people afloat on subsidised cruises on our beautiful Broads (subsidised rates require at least one person to have an impairment that prevents them enjoying a cruise on a standard boat.).
Last year we took bookings from care homes, support groups, families, schools, private parties, clubs, associations, and community groups.

barrassing writing someone else’s love letters. Because of the time difference Sonia would often ‘phone late at night after we had gone to bed. On a particular night I had stayed up late when the ‘phone rang and Carl was out. There was this sultry West Indian voice “hello, darling”. “Stop Sonia – it’s not Carl, it’s John.”
A few reminiscences of 75 years at The Grove, by John Graveling.
Part 25 1978 to 2005 Continued
Carl had a fiance in Barbados named Sonia. Sonia would regularly email Carl and this was in the early days of such a method of communication. This was fine but Carl could not easily fathom out how to use a keyboard so he would ask me to make appropriate replies. It is a bit em-
There was an invitation match down in Berkshire which Carl was invited to play in. He was very reluctant to go because he feared that he might not be able to get there. Eventually we persuaded him to go. We would put him on the train at Norwich. He could get a taxi from Liverpool St to Paddington and then Stuart Williams (another Leeward island test cricketer) would pick him up. When he arrived he was so thrilled at having done so he ‘phoned us to let us know. After this he felt able to tackle other journeys and went on an advanced coaching course at the Yorkshire ground at Headingly. Next morning the ‘phone rang at 6.00 am. It was Carl. “John, what time is it in Cromer?” “Carl, it is the same time as it is in Leeds – go back to sleep”. He thought he had gone through a time zone.
love song which was very moving. At the reception afterward I had to give a speech on behalf of his cricket mates in England and I think he looked upon us as his English parents. All told he spent four summers with us; three whilst playing for Cromer and once for Sheringham.

‘Tasty, super friendly community project where you can learn to grow, seeks your involvement … go on … give it a grow!’
Eves Hill Veg Co (EHVC) is a vibrant community market garden on the edge of Reepham, North of Norwich. Now in its third growing season, the project was began in 2016 by Hannah Claxton and along with a committed band of volunteers, has in a relatively short space of time transformed an empty field into a super productive, organic garden.
All the people who both work and volunteer at the project share the belief that food growing is a wonderful way to develop skills, build confidence and bring people together. Its principal ambition is to create a supportive environment that promotes health and well-being in a farm setting. As a social enterprise, Eves Hill VegCo is committed to producing produce of the highest standards (mostly that means fresh and tasty), the sales of which go back into creating rural livelihoods and supporting and developing the project.

therefore better able to cope with the conditions on site. Horsey’s sails are the largest we have ever constructed and she looked very different by the time the installation was finished.”
After extensive restoration work, Horsey Windpump – an icon of the Norfolk Broads – is soon to return to its former glory.
The National Trust’s project manager for this project, Paul Coleman, said “2018 will mark 75 years since Horsey Windpump’s sails last turned, after she was put out of action by a lightning strike in 1943. So it’s really exciting to have reached this historic point in the project and by the end of this year Horsey’s sails will once again be turning in the landscape, reinstating this magnificent heritage building’s place back in the community.”
Last month the newly finished sails were lifted into place atop the National Trust landmark.
Nine months after the cap was returned following conservation by the charity, Horsey Windpump was finally complete once again. Winter storms and heavy rain that led to higher than normal water levels on the Broads delayed the lift.
The Windpump has been without sails since 2014. After they were removed following winter storm damage rendered them unsafe. Subsequent investigations uncovered extensive rot in the cap and an ambitious project began to see this Broadland landmark restored to full working order.
Now fitted, the stocks and sail frames will require the striking gear and shutters to be installed, which will enable the sails to be controlled and complete this Tim Whiting was the millwright who has been working on the project and phase of works. There is still a has used the same tools and techniques that built Horsey Windpump over a lot of internal works to be hundred years ago. A Night at the Musicals for Meningitis
“My name is Jasmine Pearce and I am in year 10 at North Walsham High School. In 2005, I was diagnosed with Pneumococcal Meningitis. This greatly affected my family and myself. It is a horrible disease that changes lives and destroys families. I was lucky enough to have a full recovery, however not many do. I hope that in the future, no one has to suffer from any form of Meningitis. The Meningitis Research Foundation’s mission is to defeat Meningitis and Septicaemia whenever they exists.
On 23, 24 and 25 May, with the help of Louise Cooper, I am organising a show, ‘A Night at the Musicals’, to raise as much money as possible for the Meningitis Research Foundation. On 25 May, there will also be a bake sale, again in aid of Meningitis Research. Gina Weston, an ambassador for Meningitis Research, is coming and speaking about why she is an ambassador and talking about the foundation.
For the three shows, the doors open at 6.30pm at the Atrium in North Walsham. The show starts at 7pm and finishes at 8.30pm. The bake sale is in the Atrium Cafe, 5pm – 6.30pm (cakes still being sold in the interval).
If you are interested in buying a ticket please email me at jcpearce111@gmail.com. Tickets are £5 over 18’s and £3.50 under 18’s. All proceeds go to the Meningitis Research Foundation. Please come and support this amazing cause, and help us have a world free of Meningitis and Septicaemia.
The Magic Flute by Mozart
North Norfolk Chamber Opera’s (NNCO) rehearsals are well underway for their new and exciting production of Mozart’s opera ‘The Magic Flute’.
It is being staged with a chamber orchestra at The Auden Theatre, Gresham’s School , Holt at 7.30pm on Thursday 12, Friday 13 and Saturday 14 April. NNCO is a small opera company with big ambitions! It has been performing at The Auden Theatre annually since 2000. Formed in 1990, it remains the only amateur opera company performing in Norfolk. The Magic Flute is filled with Mozart’s melodic, infectious and glorious music and is bound to be a popular choice.
This production has an Egyptian flavour and describes the nature of love, magic and forgiveness. We observe that some characters are ‘in love’ with the idea of being in love, while others maximise their opportunities to
manipulate and control. Can Prince Tamino, Papageno and Pamina navigate through their life trials to become wiser, happier and achieve their ultimate goal?
And is the mighty Sarastro evil or is it really the Queen of the Night? “Thus courage has triumphed and virtue will rise, the final words of the opera, express the understandings of true love, truth and wisdom as the last pieces fall into place and balance is Director - Ro Curtis, Accompanist - JJan an Ashton restored.
We wholeheartedly believe that opera is for all and North Norfolk Chamber Opera welcomes you to come and experience this production. We believe you will be pleasantly surprised and it could be the start of your own journey into opera.

First Highlights announced for Holt Festival’s tenth anniversary
North Norfolk’s award-winning Holt Festival is planning to celebrate its tenth anniversary in style judging by the ‘early’ announcements that have just been made ahead of the full programme being revealed later in the year. The 2018 Festival runs from 21 – 29 July.
Jasper Carrott, one of the UK’s favourite comedians, has recovered from the health scare that caused him to cancel last year’s appearance at short notice. He is thrilled to be bringing his show Stand Up & Rock, combining stand up comedy with an all-star band featuring Bev Bevan, founding member of ELO and The Move. Jasper said ‘I’m really pleased to be coming to Holt after the disappointment of last year’s cancellation. It’s a thrill to be invited to fill the outdoor theatre with laughter and music for the closing concert’.
Another household name headed for Holt is chart topping singer, songwriter and entertainer Leo Sayer. Leo first hit the charts in 1973 and his ‘Gold Collection’ album returned him there in January 2018. He promises to thrill the Theatre in the Woods audience on Saturday 28 July with a crowd-pleasing romp through his best-loved songs. There’s a welcome return for Colin Cloud with his astounding deductions and outrageous stunts. He describes his new show as ‘designed to challenge your
perception of the world, the light and the dark.’
Other shows have been announced from former leader of the Liberal Democrats Lord (Paddy) Ashdown, James Gilchrist, one of the UK’s leading tenors, and an exclusive show from Italian classical piano megastar Gloria Campaner who teams up with Polish jazz star Leszek Możdżer for ‘Two Pianos’. Pianist Lucy Parham is joined by actor Alex Jennings (recently seen on TV as Prince Leopold in ITV’s Victoria) to tell the story of composer Sergei Rachmaninoff. Artistic Director Stash Jasper Carrott Kirkbride said ‘I hope this initial selection of acts gives a taste of our intentions for this year. I can’t wait to tell the world about the full programme with more big names to announce alongside acts that I think will become firm favourites in the future’. congratulations must go to Alejandro Prieto Rojas for his sublime image of flamingos, an incredible balance of colour, composition and emotion.”
Norfolk Wildlife Trust are thrilled to debut the very best imagery from last year’s globally prestigious Bird Photographer of the Year (BPOTY) competition; which aims to showcase the incredible variety of birds on our planet, as well as celebrate the technological advances that have made such breath-taking photography possible.
BPOTY helps raise funds for the BTO, and raised over £5,500 from entry fees alone. The money has been used to help support the BTO’s young birder boot camps aimed at engaging a younger generation of naturalists and ornithologists. Snow Day
A white calm greets the sunrise, a blanket of icy chill, Gardens looking beautiful as snow frames each window sill. Slowly the unusual chill stirs each sleepy head, And a cautious testing toe creeps out of every bed. Something feels different, something feels strange, It isn’t a normal morning, there’s been a funny change. The window reveals the reason why things are not quite right, A beautiful stretch of snow comes suddenly into sight. Panic starts to set in about schools, work and travel, The day that was planned out starts to rapidly unravel. Then a realisation happens, there’s nothing you can do, A calm sets upon you as you start to think it through. Smiles and excitement for an occurrence that is so rare, It doesn’t even matter that a bitter chill fills the air. Run out with a sledge, leave your wifi and screens behind, Fill a day with laughter and unwind your busy mind. Families pushed together making unexpected fun, A chance to make new memories as we sledge, build and run. Being given the gift of time is such a rare occurrence, Enjoy it while it lasts, it could be a while before a recurrence! Laura London

The District Final of the Rotary Young Musician Competition 2018 was held in the Fishmongers' Recital Hall, at Gresham's School, Holt, by kind permission of the Headmaster, Douglas Robb.
The event was hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Holt and Broadland. John Rampling, principal organiser, commented “The audience of around 120 was wonderfully entertained with wide range of music. The twelve aspiring young musicians from Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire did justice to the magnificent state of the art recital hall which is part of the £6.5m Britten Building Music complex”.
The winner of the Instrumental Section was Colette Maxwell-Preston, a gifted 10 year old from Hillside Avenue Primary School, Thorpe St Andrew, Norwich. The runner-up was 11 year old flautist Gwilym Howarth from Uggeshall. He attends Southwold Primary School. Summer bodies are made in winter
Summer is round the corner and sooner we start to prepare for it, the more time we have to show results. Here is a selection of our treatments that you can benefit from.
Varicose and Thread Veins
Changing options for the treatment of unwanted veins. Days of open surgery, prolonged bruising and painful recovery are long gone.
How can a beam of light replace a surgeon’s knife? Is this too good to be true? Not anymore- Non-invasive methods are replacing surgery at a very fast rate. So much so that NICE -The National Institute of Clinical Excellence has updated it’s guidelines on the treatment of varicose veins. It has recommended Endovenous laser treatment as the preferred option, foam injections second and surgery where the first two options are not suitable or declined. So come and see us to help you get rid of those unwanted veins anywhere on your face or body.
Safe and effective Laser Hair Removal and Tattoo removal for all skin types. Why it is a great idea to see us.
When it comes to laser hair and tattoo removal it is the wild west in this country. There is no shortage of new places opening up at every corner. We are seeing increasing number of patients who are either dissatisfied or have been harmed because of poorly trained and unregulated providers and cheap copycat or downright dangerous and unapproved machines.
As we all know one size does not fit all. There is simply no machine, which is suitable for every person’s needs. With this in mind we have invested heavily in modern high-end medical machines that have undergone rigorous testing and evaluation. All our therapists also undergo rigorous initial and on going training in laser safety. We have helped thousands of patients remove unwanted hair, ingrowing hair and rashes, pseudofolliculitis barbae (razor bumps) and even helped ‘Grow a Grower’ help us raise £5,000 to fund our future farmer apprenticeship and win cash prizes.
Building on last year’s successful traineeship programme, and encouraged by the calibre of graduates EHVC have been inspired to launch a campaign in conjunction with supporters of the project and the Reepham and District Rotary Club. The ‘100 Club’ campaign to ‘Grow a Grower’ is asking (100, or more!) people to contribute £5 a month in our ambition to fund a paid apprenticeship scheme to an outstanding young local grower, Izzy Filby.
“Completing the traineeship was amazing, the practical learning is unrivalled to any other training I have done. It provides a space for you to apply what you've learnt, to have hands on experience and to make mistakes and learn. An apprenticeship at Eves Hill Veg Co would allow me to progress to another level. It would give me my first job in horticultural and allow me to take on more responsibility. I would love in the future to set up a place of my own!

Joyce proves you are never too old to keep fit
Joyce Irvine proved you are never too old to keep fit as she celebrated her 90th birthday with friends at a seated exercise class held in Sheringham Library. Joyce was surprised by her friends and fellow exercise class members who organised a celebration with chocolate cake, music and party hats, although she nearly uncovered the surprise when she arrived at the Library earlier than expected to return some books! As a founder member of the class, Joyce has been enjoying the benefits of seated exercise since the class was set up by North Norfolk District Council in 2015 as part of its Sports Hubs and Clubs programme. The 45-minute session is designed for those who like to keep fit and enjoy a gentle workout while sitting down, and it is regularly attended by up to 15 members. When asked what she loves about the class, Joyce

King’s Lynn Rotary Club have generously sponsored the tea towel so that all profits raised will go directly back to the Hospice. This will enable them to continue providing outstanding care to people in the local community living with life-shortening illnesses. The tea towel will be sold exclusively by The Norfolk Hospice on their website and at fundraising events they attend throughout the year.
Emily Hemsworth, Fundraising Administrator & Marketing Assistant at The Norfolk Hospice said “We are really excited to launch our unique tea towel and hope that lots of people will be interested in buying one (or more!). It is a fantastic gift or souvenir of the local area and we are very grateful to both the King’s Lynn Rotary Club and Paul Kirk for their support. We couldn’t have done it without them. Remember to keep an eye out for Hospice stalls at events throughout the year – in particular Sandringham Flower Show and Hunstanton Kite Festival.” If you would like more information, please call the Hospice Fundraising Team on 01485 601701. responded “There is a real sense of friendship among the group, it is a great place to meet people and socialise. We all have great fun and, of course, I really enjoy the exercise.” Cllr Maggie Prior, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Health & Wellbeing, said “My very best wishes to Joyce for a happy birthday! The seated exercise classes offer an opportunity for people to come together to exercise and keep fit. As the group at Sheringham has proved, the sessions also help to generate a sense of community and a place where lasting friendships are made.” Joyce, who turns 90 on Friday, 2 March, plans to celebrate her birthday with her family at a gathering in Lincolnshire. Far too young Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr
Almost half of people in the UK (47%) have never discussed inheritance with their families and a quarter of them (26%) do not think it is a priority. According to this recent poll, the reason is that most people do not think that they are old enough to worry about it.
Government statistics show that Inheritance Tax (IHT) raised £4.9billion in the last financial year. Although this is partly due to rising property prices and a freezing of the IHT threshold, it is also down to poor planning.
This is because it is a highly emotional subject, as entirely understandably, people generally don’t like talking about money or death! The research also shows that one in ten people would like to get to grips with it but just haven’t found the right time, or just don’t know where to start.
This is why a general review of your affairs can be so helpful. Solicitors especially, much more than accountants, have a wide range of skills to enable a number of different possible
arrangements to be put in place. Often a review takes place at the same time as making an up-to-date tax-efficient Will. We can talk with you about making gifts of assets and advising on what to give, how to give it and to whom. Issues specific to the older or more vulnerable client can also be sensitively considered. We can see you alone or with family members. However, we are professionally bound and highly-trained to ensure that there is no undue influence and that questions of mental capacity are thoroughly and gently considered. All this can be interwoven with addressing potential lifetime tax planning issues such as a Capital Gains Tax (CGT) liability, which can often be managed or delayed using a number of possible methods.
It was a distinguished Labour Chancellor of the Exchequer who said wryly that Inheritance Tax is a voluntary tax paid by those who trust their families less than they trust the tax man.
New horizons for ‘Wissie’ - to guest at Beamish this year
M&GN society favourite, Hudson Clarke 0-6-0T 1700 Wissington is to visit the world famous open air museum at Beamish in County Durham this summer - new horizons indeed for the loco which spent almost its entire working life in the a very different industrial setting, feeding BSC’s largest sugar refinery in the Fens.

with yet another railway. The Beamish Museum approached us to the hire Wissington for three months over the summer. This is the peak time for the museum and so ‘Wissie’ will be seen by the large numbers of people who visitor the highly popular attraction over these months.” Draft contracts were still under discussion at the time of writing but Mr Sharpe feels that “the deal is 99.9% done.”
Wissie’s stay will involve around 60 steamings which will bring in enough cash to pay for its new tyres and, as Society Engineer Keith Ashford so eloquently put it, “leave enough change for a bag of chips”. “We are grateful to volunteer Rob Gibbons for introducing us to Beamish” says Mr Sharpe, “and to Keith Ashford for negotiating the deal.”
The loco will head north directly to Beamish after the end of its current stay at the Colne Valley Railway in June.

Cllr Lee was voted into the post after the former Leader Cllr Tom FitzPatrick stepped down after five years in the post. We are blessed with fantastic staff, which can be witnessed by the awards they continually win."

and two new shore crew being signed up. Then she stepped into the Chair of the Fundraising Committee with a very successful Lifeboat Day in August. As well as crew at Happisburgh, she also helps crew the Gravesend Lifeboat, and even this week she has been on an Assessor Course in Newhaven to be able to help with training of crew on station. How she fits all this in as well as work and home life is a mystery. The award was presented by Jane Baker, Kelvin’s widow. The Service Award for Memorable Service was awarded for the service on 19 July 2017.
Happisburgh Lifeboat Station looked back at 2017 with the awards and dinner dance held at Royal Hotel Mundesley last month. Over 100 people attended the dinner dance. After the meal the main purpose of the evening was to look back at 2017 before the band ‘Don’t Ask’ took to the stage. The evening raised £610 through the raffle and auction for the RNLI.
Happisburgh R.N.L.I. Lifeboat Station volunteers were called into action 11 times in 2017 plus 18 safety interventions, part of the RNLI Respect the Water
campaign to reduce the number of deaths from drowning. The callouts included everything from search for drugs, swimmers ditched hang glider, boats and dogs in the sea. Overall this led to two lives being saved. We said ‘bye’ to Cedric Cox after 50 years’ service to station, Tony Phenix who stood down from crew after 12 years, Sally Smith who stood down as Treasurer after seven years and Dave Cato who stood down from crew. Not forgetting The Spirit of Berkhamsted, the station’s D Class Lifeboat after 14 years on station. We said ‘hi’ to Sean Thurston, Daniel Bunting, David Loveday, Mark Jarvis, Ian Rillie, John Holsworth, as crew and shore crew, Jim Page (Treasurer) and Tany Blackburn (Souvenir shop). Cubitt Siely has taken over as Lifeboat Operations Manager. Two new lifeboats arrived on station, Atlantic 85 Howard Bell in May and D Class Russell Pickering in September. Both were named on station on 7 October 2017.
The Kelvin Baker Achievement Award is in memory of Kelvin Baker who was a leading member of the lifeboat, well respected for his professionalism and boat handing skills as a helmsman. He was taken from us on 17 March 2008, nearly 10 years ago. Kelly will never be forgotten and the Kelvin Baker achievement award lives on in his memory promoting the commitment and professionalism we like to think he would have approved of. The Station decided that this year’s Kelvin Baker Achievement award should go to Charlotte Siely.
Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers were called into action on the afternoon of Wednesday 19 July. The pagers sounded at 3.15pm for reports of a broken down jet ski off the coast at Waxham, drifting out to sea. Happisburgh Atlantic, Howard Bell, was on its way at 3.25pm with Tim Grimmer at the helm and Sam Gillard and Martin Gibbs as crew. The Coastguard tasked them to search from Sea Palling towards Winterton. The jet ski had left Sea Palling an hour before the callout. The sea conditions were rough when the lifeboat arrived off Waxham. The Coastguard from Winterton could see the jet ski from the top of the sand dunes so they were able to guide the lifeboat crew to the jet ski which was now one mile off the coast. Both persons on the jet ski were uninjured so their craft was towed back to Sea Palling arriving at 4.12pm, where, with the help of the RNLI Lifeguards the jet ski and crew were landed on the beach and looked after by the lifeguards. Without the intervention of the lifeboat two lives could have been lost. Howard Bell then returned to station at 4.28pm and had to do a net recovery due to the rough sea at Happisburgh. The lifeboat was made ready for service again. It takes a whole team effort to launch the Lifeboat, not just crew. The shore crew were Bob Mann Steve Poll, Mike Forsdick, Eddy Askew, Cubitt Siely, Rob Ferguson, Cedric Cox and Justin Arnold, not forgetting the RNLI Lifeguards Sea Palling. Photo 1 Charlotte Siely and Jane Baker Photo 2 Service award for memorable service
This was for all her extra work on station. She has been on the crew for eight years and has progressed to helm of both station’s lifeboats. In 2017 she took control of the station recruitment campaign which was successful with four new crew
Life is for living with the support of My Guide
Has your sight loss affected your health and wellbeing and stopped you from doing the things you used to do?
The charity Guide Dogs provides more than just a dog. My Guide is a service that can provide you with a volunteer to help increase your confidence, fitness and enable you to get out and about in your community. This could be a trip to the local café, joining a new social group or walking around your local area to increase your confidence.
Lisa, a mum of two was diagnosed with a condition which affected her peripheral vision called Retinitis Pigmentosa at the age of 21. In the beginning, Lisa’s life wasn’t affected by the condition. However, as the years passed it was a roller coaster of highs and lows, gradually losing confidence as her eye sight worsened.
Hedgehog Haven
Another new arrival came in on 24 February a young female, Stella, weighing 200grms. I now have a total of 40 in care. Every hut is occupied and six containers are in use. Running out of space, two vulnerable ones are residing in their containers in the lounge! With the recent freezing weather, there is no chance of releasing any that are ready to go.Of the ones in the outside huts, most are still hibernating to keep them warm.
Earlier last year, Lisa was introduced to a My Guide volunteer, Karen. Lisa and Karen meet up once a week and join in with walks organised by the local rambling group. These walks range in difficulty and length but always end with a coffee and cake! Lisa also meets Karen in Norwich for a coffee, which is also adding to her increasing confidence.
Lisa has also started to learn how to use the long cane, which has started to open her world. Lisa says “since I have been cane training my confidence has soared. It’s lovely to have my independence back and get out there again.”
“I am so thankful for Guide Dogs and My Guide for their support in helping me to independence again.”
Kerry Matthews, My Guide Ambassador said “A guide dog is not suitable for everyone; therefore My Guide gives us the opportunity to reach more people with sight loss and
I gave them lots of extra bedding. Amazingly Duster and Mr Prickles have still been coming out every evening and feeding. The hardest part has been trying to keep their water from freezing over. Willow, whom I mentioned last time, has responded well to her treatment. She is eating very well and is gaining weight so it's looking good for her to be released at a later date. As the weather turns milder hedgehogs will be awaking from hibernation very hungry and thirsty so please put out a shallow dish of water
increase their health and wellbeing”
In addition to volunteers, My Guide also provide training to help friends and family members to understand sight loss and how support someone close to them.

and a tasty treat of dog or cat food (not in gravy or fish flavour). There will be a fund raising Prize Bingo on Saturday 24 March at New Road Bowls and Snooker Club in North Walsham, 7.30 start. All funds raised goes towards the hedgehogs’ food and medication.

Exciting news from All Saints Church, Upper Sheringham!
At the recent PCC (Parochial Church Council) meeting it was agreed to proceed with a major fundraising project to re-hang the derelict six bells in the tower of All Saints Church to enable traditional English ‘full circle’ bellringing to take place once again. The bells have not been rung like this since the 1930s. They are a complete ring of six bells cast by Thomas Mears II of Whitechapel, London in 1841. The project will involve all of the bells being removed from the Church and taken to Nicholson Engineering of Bridport, Dorset. A new metal frame will then be made, along will new fixtures and fittings, and the bells will be tuned before returning everything to the Church. The original wooden mediaeval frame will remind in situ in the tower. In addition, we plan to install a chiming mechanism to ensure the bells can still be sounded joyfully to call the faithful to worship and to celebrate other occasions when no ringers are available. We hope you share our excitement in the prospect of restoring the only set of bells in the Weybourne Group of Parishes. The total cost of this project is £75,000. All donations, no matter how large or small, will be greatly appreciated. AT LEAST OUR GRAVY MOVES ABOUT

To date we have climbed nine different peaks, having repeated two therefore making a total of eleven since 1994. I suppose that when faced with the might and height of Beeston Hill (Bump) near Sheringham at around 103 metres, a trip to the Alps is a cakewalk!! A trip to Beeston is not now overly high on our list but a non-Norfolk Mountain is something else. Our conquests range from the Alpspitze in 1994 near Nesselwang at 2,628 metres then following on we were on the Nebelhorn at 1,900 metres, the Breitenberg at 1,838 repeated in 2016 and several others in between all over 1,800 metres. Our highlight was Germany’s highest peak, the Zugspitze at a breathtaking, as the air was a bit thin, 2,962 metres.

I expect all of this sounds very pioneering but I must confess that apart from the Tegelberg at 1,730 metres conquered from bottom to top by a few of us, the others all required the assistance of the cable cars. That is apart from the last few hundred metres to the summit and this is usually challenging enough. Ann began birding in the 1980s as a result of chauffeuring her two sons to Cliffe Marshes, Dungeness and the Isle of Sheppey, and thence further afield. She started twitching after failing to identify a Sociable Lapwing on the Dartford Marshes in 1985. Since retiring she has travelled widely in search of the more colourful species of birds, with more than a passing interest in mammals. Please park along Church Road or in the overflow car park at the church. Please ensure that local residents can still access their driveways and there is sufficient clearance for agricultural vehicles to use the road. A torch might also be helpful, as the village has no street lighting. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing.

To take up ladylike pursuits to prepare them for their marriage. These days are very different when women are more free, To live their lives the way they want - be how they want to be. But despite the trend for straightened hair, worn by today’s young girls, I still hanker for a coronet of pretty, tousled curls.

Mad March Hare Race
A perfect opportunity to blow the winter cobwebs away on 18 March for a Mad March Hare 10K with the Coltishall Jaguars Running Club. I am writing this while sitting under a blanket of snow, hopefully by the time you read this it will be gone and the sun will be shining again. Inevitably the weather has had an effect on the team matches with some being postponed because our opponents were travelling from North Norfolk, and even our home venue, the Kings Head had to close its doors. On 3 February the Norfolk Schools Championships were held. The under 11 event was won convincingly by Sheringham Primary School for whom Broadlands’ own Darcey Pashley scored 3/3 on board 2. Joshua Dawson scored 2/3 on board 3 and one of Broadlands newest Junior members Jack Hall scored 2/3 on board 4. They each received a gold medal. Sheringham’s B team finished equal 2nd with Ruby Gee scoring The Broadland 2/3 on board 2, who received a silver medal. In the under 9 event, Chess Club meets Sheringham finished second with George Hall (Broadland) playing on regularly at the board 2 who also received a silver medal. Congratulations and well done Kings Head to all of our young players. The photo was sent to us by proud Mum, Jo Coltishall, Monday Pashley and shows Ruby, Darcy and Joshua with their medals. and Wednesday at On 25 February Broadland entered a team into the East Anglian Chess 7.30pm.
