Donors help canal charity spread the word

Visitors to a north-east Norfolk beauty spot can check the latest footpath and fishing information, find out how to book a boat trip, and a wealth of other useful information thanks to four new noticeboards. They have been installed along a 2.3 mile stretch of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal at Ebridge Lock, Spa Common, Royston Bridge and Swafield.

Money to buy the noticeboards has come from donations to the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust given by North Walsham Town Council (£400), Interconnector UK (£500) - based at the nearby Bacton Gas Terminals and the Norfolk area Ramblers' group (£300). Tom Webster, fisheries officer and a trustee with the canal charity, said they were grateful for the donors' generosity which had helped make the popular canal even more welcoming to visitors.

North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust. Barry Hester, Mayor of North Walsham; Tom Webster, North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust trustee; Mary Seward, Deputy Mayor of North Walsham; Peter James, Norfolk area Ramblers; and Becky Wylie, Interconnector UK, at the Ebridge Lock noticeboard

"Walkers, dog owners, fishermen, canoeists, model boat enthusiasts and wildlife fans flock to the canal throughout the year," said Tom.

"These noticeboards are already helping us to answer their questions about the canal and keep them up to date with what we're doing to restore this stretch."

Spokesman Peter James said the Ramblers wanted to encourage the opening of paths and supported giving the public information on what was available for them to enjoy.

Becky Wylie, representing Interconnector UK, said they were delighted to support the project, adding "Increasing local awareness of the continuing restoration of the canal and the facilities the canal offers is key to attracting volunteers to help with further restoration."

And North Walsham's mayor, Barry Hester, said many canal trust volunteers had already made a massive improvement to the area, which was much appreciated. He added "It is good to hear already that the canal is attracting lots of new visitors, including the wildlife kind."

The Trust always welcomes more help in a variety of muddy and land-based roles. Contact: secretary@nwdct.org

Mini-tummy tuck at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic Are you bothered by the appearance of excess fat and skin in your lower abdomen? Are you struggling to get in shape after pregnancy, childbirth or ‘C’ section operation?

Mini-tummy tuck at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic may just be the solution you are looking for.

What is a mini tummy tuck or miniabdominoplasty procedure? It is a procedure to address stubborn area of stretched, sagging skin and fat on your lower tummy. Pregnancy, aging and genetics are common culprits behind a belly pouch and unfortunately, diet and exercise are often ineffective in helping to get rid of it. If you are bothered by the appearance of your lower abdomen, a mini tummy tuck may help you get the results you want with a relatively short recovery.

How is mini-tummy tuck different from

a full tummy tuck? Full tummy tuck is a major operation performed under general anaesthesia. It is suitable for patients after massive weight loss, patients with severe stretch marks all over their abdomen or in patients with significant muscle wall laxity or abdominal hernias. It requires a longer scar, wide undermining which risks blood supply to the skin hence liposuction is not carried out during this procedure. There is a scar around the belly button as it has to be moved. It is a major procedure that provides a tighter but not necessary slimmer appearance. Mini tummy tuck is a good option in patients with skin excess in lower part of their belly. Mini tummy tuck is a less invasive option. This uses a relatively short incision in the same area of a Csection scar and avoids the incision around the belly button. This is often performed on women who have mild sagging or post-baby pouch, stretch marks from pregnancy, or C-section scarring. This procedure focuses only on the area below the belly button, not the entire abdomen.

We nearly always add liposuction to our tummy tucks to sculpt the body in 3-dimension. The technique known also as mini lipo-abdominoplasty with no undermining, makes it possible to safely combine lipo-sculpture of the abdomen with lower abdomen skin tightening. Unlike traditional tummy tucks, this operation allows for more contouring

6

| north norfolk post | march 2019

of the abdomen. It gives a result that is both tight and shapely.

What are the advantages of a miniabdominoplasty? • Enhancing of the body shape and silhouette as a result of liposuction. • Preservation of the perforating blood vessels. • Lower rate of complications. • Easier surgery performances. • Natural profiles. • Preservation of supra-pubic skin sensitivity. • More security for smokers and post bariatric surgeries.

Am I a good candidate for a mini tummy tuck? A mini tummy tuck may be a great option if you are healthy and at a stable weight, without a large excess of abdominal skin. Typically, the best candidates are primarily concerned about loose skin or a protruding lower belly only—if you have significant stretched, sagging skin or muscles, a full tummy tuck may achieve better results. Mini tummy tuck surgery is not a substitute for weight loss or a healthy exercise program. Although the results are lasting, the outcome can be influenced by changes in your weight following surgery. If you are planning substantial weight loss or if you are considering future pregnancy, you may be advised to postpone mini tummy tuck surgery. Helping Harry …

Regular readers may remember the story we ran back in January about little Harry Deeba who was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma in January 2018 and whose parents Carly and Ali were appealing for support with their attempt to raise £239,000 by the end of April to access a vaccine in New York that is showing promising signs in reducing the chances of relapse, giving Harry the best chance at living cancer-free.

Carly has contacted us to say the fundraising is going well and there are lots of events coming up which are detailed on Harry's Facebook page Harry vs Neuroblastoma. These include a group from Drayton Insurance Services who are cycling from London to Brussels at the end of March. They have a Facebook page set up called Cycle

for Harry. Carly used to work at Drayton insurance. Darren Walsgrove, joint owner of DIS who also owns The White Horse Pub in Overstrand, will be taking part in this event Just Giving page: www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/HarrysCycle

The running total and details of how people can donate to Harry's appeal can be found at solvingkidscancer.org.uk/ campaigns/harrys-appeal/

Donations can also be made by texting HADE99 with an amount £1-£10 to 70070.

NNDC raises over £3,600 for local charities Dress Down days prove to be a hit with staff

Over the course of 2018, staff working at North Norfolk District Council have raised over £3,600 for local charities. NNDC have held Dress Down days, where employees have been encouraged to make donations to a number of good causes in return for wearing their casual clothes to work. On the days the staff have taken part in fundraising for their chosen charities, additional money has been raised through raffles and bake sales.

The charities were nominated by members of staff or elected members, and those that have benefitted in 2018 were Little Angels Playgroup in Fakenham, Nelson’s Journey, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Team Rubicon –

Disaster Recovery, Open Youth Trust, the Scouts, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Migraine Trust, Parkinson’s UK, Children in Need, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, Break, The Purfleet Trust and Christmas Jumper Day for Save the Children.

NNDC has been running these successful Dress Down days for several years and will continue to do so in 2019.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2019? 20 19 ?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time fo or many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2019 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 01263 0 1263 8 823465 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk

No kidding – so cute!

Popular North Norfolk District Council herd welcomes its newest members North Norfolk has welcomed some cute new arrivals – the first six fluffy kids to be born as part of the district’s Bagot goat-breeding programme.

in the media spotlight in the past few years thanks to the Normal for Norfolk television series.

The herd was originally brought in to help keep the cliff at Cromer clear, but the Bagots have since caught the eye of Norfolk Wildlife Trust and Suffolk Wildlife Trust, who have bought and borrowed some of the herd for habitat management on their land.

The latest additions to the popular herd were a bit wobbly on their feet to start with but the adorable kids are now settling well into Norfolk life, and they will be the stars of a forthcoming slot on BBC Radio 4’s Farming Today programme.

It’s the first time officers from North Norfolk District Council have helped rear kids since the Bagots – which are listed as “vulnerable” by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust – arrived in the district in 2016. The nannies and kids are currently having a break away from their habitat management work, at Wiveton Hall, which has itself been

The goats have also become a tourist attraction, and the baby Bagots are sure to prove a hit with the public when they head to Cromer later this year.

Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “It was great to see the young goats doing so well, and we are all very proud of the great work that our team is doing with this project.”

SOS -Save our Sheep

The first of the lambs are now appearing in the fields and Spring is not too far away. A walk with your dog on a bright spring day can be energising after the long, dark winter months. But if you encounter livestock on your walk it’s important to remember that after being kept indoors over the winter, they can be excitable and inquisitive when first let out to graze. For dog owners and farmers alike safety is a priority and you must keep your dog under control at all times. Don't forget farmers have the right to shoot your dog if it is worrying sheep.

Here are our top tips for walking safely where animals are grazing: •Always keep your dog under close control and on a lead where livestock is present. •Don‘t allow your dog to bark at or chase livestock •When approaching grazing animals talk out loud so that they are aware of your presence - this way you are less

likely to startle them. Once you reach them, walk quietly past and praise your dog for ignoring them. •Avoid lingering between mothers and their offspring, even a cuddly looking sheep can become defensive of her lamb if she feels threatened. •Always keep your eyes peeled for potential dangers, if necessary find an alternative route around the livestock especially if your dog is elderly or slow •Consider attending Obedience on Walks classes so that you can train your dog to be well behaved and reliable in order to have an enjoyable walk. •Remember, people have been killed by livestock, keep yourself safe and your dog under close control at all times.

Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham is a fun, family orientated club offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs. For more information on the club and classes available please call Kathy on 01263 720730 or visit our web site www.animal-magix.co.uk

Open Up Hospice Care campaign launches

The Norfolk Hospice champions campaign to widen access to care

The Norfolk Hospice is joining forces with other hospices across the UK to support a new campaign aimed at widening access to the vital support they provide for people with life-limiting conditions and those who care for them. The Open Up Hospice Care campaign – which launched this month and is led by national hospice and palliative care charity Hospice UK - highlights how hospice care is available beyond hospice in-patient units, including in people’s homes. One in four people in the UK miss out on the care they need according to earlier research by the national charity due to a range of reasons including:

late or a lack of referrals to hospice services and low levels of awareness about hospice care and where and when this support is available.

Also, studies have shown that people from economically deprived areas, BAME (black and minority ethnic) communities and LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people can experience barriers to accessing end of life care services. Hospice UK and local hospices are working to tackle this through initiatives to extend care to more people, such as expanding community services and reaching out to the different groups of people who have been missing out on vital support, including those caring for their loved ones at home.

The Norfolk Hospice has been providing Hospice at Home care to people in the local community for many years. They also provide a weekly drop in session on a Monday morning for anyone who is looking for information and advice about end of life care and host regular events at the Hospice and out in the community where people can find out more about the charity and the services they provide.

Hospices provide wide-ranging support for both people with life-limiting conditions and their families, including: counselling, bereavement support and respite care.

THE DREAMERS OF DREAMS

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society in Concert

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society are delighted to be returning to Cromer Parish Church on Saturday 6 April at 7.30pm for their next concert entitled “The Dreamers of Dreams”.

The choir, directed by David Ballard, will be performing works by two of the most successful composers at opposite ends of the 20th Century, namely Sir Edward Elgar and John Rutter.

Elgar’s The Music Makers is a beautiful ode to those who create music with

words by Arthur O’Shaughnessy. The opening lines set the scene “We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams”. Rutter’s popular Requiem is dedicated to his father who had recently died when he completed composing the work in 1985. He combines the traditional Latin text with bible verses in English – notably Psalm 23 “The Lord is My Shepherd” and Psalm 130 “Out of the Deep”. The choir will be joined by soprano soloist Zaira Palumbo who recently

graduated from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and is a rising star on the local classical music scene. This Zaira Palumbo concert which will (c) John Newstead be accompanied by a small chamber ensemble is presented with the greatly appreciated support of Cromer Town Council and Norfolk County Council. Tickets for the concert are available from Sheringham Little Theatre 01263 822347, K Hardware in Cromer or online www.sheringhamlittle theatre.com priced £12 (under 18s free) or £15 on the door.

Visit www.sheringhamand cromerchoral.co.uk for more information about the choir.

Aylsham Singers welcome new members!

Aylsham Singers is a Community Choir consisting of women (sopranos & altos) and men (tenors and basses).

The choir has been in existence for well over 10 years and has performed many concerts - with music ranging from the Beach Boys to Bach. The choir is led by Musical Director Viv Cairns, who studied music at the Royal Academy of Music and now teaches music in Norfolk schools. Concerts are usually based around a theme.

The next concert, at St Michaels’ Church, Aylsham on May 18th 2019 from 7.30pm, has a ‘water’ theme and includes music by Henry Mancini and Billy Joel. Other projects in the pipeline include involvement in a charity single.

Aylsham Singers are keen to recruit a few new members - particularly men. People of all ages and musical abilities are currently being invited to join the choir. There is no requirement to be able to read music - singers just need

to able to ‘hold a tune’. The choir is having open rehearsals over the coming weeks to allow anyone who is interested to come and have a sing and see if being in a choir is something they would like to do. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings (from 7.30pm -9.30pm) at St John’s Catholic Church, White Hart Street, Aylsham.

If you would like to attend one of the open rehearsals, please phone 01263-731170 for further details.

room has also been added with a dazzling array of vintage equipment from telex and tickertape machines and other equipment used to communicate with fighter command as well as fieldbased machines.

Also new this season is the restored Nuclear Reporting Cell, which tells the story of how the base was used in the Cold War to warn and track a Nuclear attack and fallout if one occurred. The Nuclear Reporting Cell was formerly staffed by the Royal Observer Corp (ROC) and will have Giga Counters and fall out protective suits on display. It will include information on warning times of attack and monitoring and surveillance. It will also have information on the Dooms Day Clock used to measure the likely risk of a worldwide nuclear catastrophe.

RAF Air Defence & Radar Museum

A room devoted to the Bloodhound surface to air missile display, a radio and communications room plus a Tornado Cockpit are among new attractions at a revamped RAF Radar Museum in 2019.

The RAF Radar Museum has undergone a complete revamp over the winter adding even more attractions to its exciting offer as it opens for 2019 season. It follows on from its most successful year ever in 2018 when 10,000 visitors came to the museum a massive 100% increase on the previous year. The additional income has enabled the museum to invest in the visitor experience.

A new room has been created at the RAF Radar Museum to tell the story of the Bloodhound Missile system for 2019. The Bloodhound surface to air missile entered service with the RAF in 1958, the role of the Bloodhound missile system was to protect the UK’s nuclear deterrent, the V-Bomber and Thor missiles bases from air attack. Research into replacing outmoded Anti-Aircraft guns started in 1944 at the Radar Research & Development Establishment, Malvern, under the codename ‘Red Duster’. The system consisted of long range guided missiles, a 3D search radar and a target illuminating radar.

In the early 70s, in light of the increased low-level Soviet fighterbomber air threat, UK Bloodhound Mark II missile bases took on a new role with the creation of a Low-level Missile Engagement Zone covering most of East Anglia. In 1983 further bases were established when Bloodhound units in Germany were redeployed back to the UK. After 33 years of service, the Bloodhound Force was stood down in 1991. The Radar Museum in Horning is fortunate to have one of the surviving missiles on display. A new radio and communications

A Tornado Cockpit joins the two other cockpits at the museum and will be housed with the Jaguar cockpit in the ‘hanger room’ and has a viewing platform that enables people to get a view from the co-pilots position. The Tornado fleet has just ended its active service in February this year, the museum’s Tornado saw action in the first Gulf War and the aircraft’s full history forms part of the display. Steps enable visitors to look inside the cockpit and also to access the rear of the cockpit to experience the view that the co-pilot would have.

Museum Manager, Lynn Kerslake said ‘The museum has totally revamped most rooms over the winter and added three key display areas with new Bloodhound surface to air missile display room which brings to life the siting of these important element of Britain’s Cold War defence capability. In addition, there will be new talks given on Thursdays in the season by a former RAF staff member who worked on the

Bloodhound missile system. Also new is a radio and communications room, which brings to life the importance of communicating with our other bases and allies during World War II and The Cold War. These have been added to the existing 21 rooms, meaning that the museum can have even more exciting and interesting exhibits on display from its collection of over 10,000 items. We believe that we have things of interest here for everyone, from those who served in the forces to people who want to know about the part radar played in the Battle of Britain and terrifying reality of the Cold War and the threat of nuclear destruction.”

The museum has also improved its offer to schools, producing learning journeys and materials that will feed into more parts of the school curriculum.

Says Lynn ‘The role that the museum plays in developing our offer as a provider of education materials is important in encouraging young people to think about careers in science and technology.”

The popular RAF Radar Museum, near Horning in The Broads, opens on Tuesday 2 April for the 2019 season and is open four days a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays until Thursday 31 October from 10am - 5pm. The once Top Secret radar establishment occupies the site of the world’s longest continuously operating radar station and is the biggest museum in North Norfolk. The museum is also open on Easter Bank Holiday Monday and the two May bank holiday Mondays as well as the August one.

The museum is a charity and does not receive grants from any organisation. All income come from visitors and the museum is staffed by over 80 volunteers.

He said, “family values are very important to me and I want to improve North Norfolk for those trying to work and support their families. I believe in promoting economic growth in the area to enable people to secure jobs and afford housing.”

He hopes to champion issues which

are important to local people, something he has been doing for the last 10 years, and to improve things for young people entering the job market.

And what does he like to do in his spare time? Some golf and tennis, he enjoys DIY and lately has become interested in gardening, above all spending time with his family.

The rowing season continues, despite the variations in weather, with Bluejacket, one of the Club’s beautiful skiffs, in full use for several outings on Barton Broad during the week. The club members, or “Crabbers”, are keen to have an active winter in 2019. See crablakeney.wordpress.com for some pictures of rowers in action on the water or enjoying a brief but deserved refreshment break. It won’t be long before the two skiffs are back on the Carnser at Blakeney ready for summer rowing.

The forthcoming competitive season promises to be as full as ever. Events

on the schedule include the King’s Lynn Hansa Rowing Festival at which Blakeney will defend six trophies, the Great River Race on the Thames, the local regattas, several races in Essex and the Carrow Cup event in Norwich. On the expedition front, a Club group will row in Brittany at La Semaine du Golfe du Morbihan between 27 May and 2 June. This promises to be a fascinating experience!

Come along and try rowing for yourselves. No previous experience is needed, just a taste for adventure and fun. You don’t have to take part in any of the race events. Social rowing is

Get off MY land!

Susan Matthews, Director, Hayes + Storr

This is a phrase often associated with farmers, but what if you cannot prove it is your land?

In a rural county such as Norfolk, where large areas of land and many homes have remained in the same family for generations, it should come as little surprise that there are areas of land which are not registered at the Land Registry. What is surprising, is the amount of land and property which remains unregistered and how often people are unaware of it.

Compulsory registration only came to rural Norfolk in 1989 and even then this was only for purchases of land for value or leases for a term of over 21 years. In 1998, assents (transfers of land after death) and legal mortgages became compulsory registerable and in 2002 it became compulsory for nearly all land transactions to beregistered or, to trigger a first registration. Shorter term arrangements, such as farm business tenancies and leases of less than seven years, do not have to be registered but, may need to be noted against the landlord’s freehold title.

In the absence of a land or property transaction to trigger a first registration, land will remain

unregistered unless a voluntary application is made to the Land Registry to register it. This may be considered an unwelcome hassle and cost, but there is good argument to registering land and property, even if it is just to have a secure and clear record of what you own.

With unregistered farmland, there is often a field swapped with a neighbour many years ago and not formally recorded, or a change in a boundary agreed but not documented. Often, it is the older generation who has this knowledge and can provide evidence of ownership. It is therefore important that the registration process is undertaken whilst current or former owners or farm managers/workers can provide key facts vital for the registration process. This is particularly the case if title deeds are missing or have been lost or destroyed.

It is much harder to claim adverse possession or ‘squatters’ rights’ over registered property or for a neighbour to encroach onto your land. If you are looking to sell, gift or mortgage your land or property the process is much simpler and quicker (and often cheaper!) if dealing with a registered title.

The Land Registry is keen for land and property to be registered and offers a reduced fee for those registrations which are undertaken voluntarily. It may well be time to dig out those title deeds and consider an application to register your land.

If you would like to speak with a member of the agricultural or property team about registering your land or property, Hayes + Storr are holding free consultation days at their Fakenham and Swaffham offices during March. Please contact 01328 863231 if you would like to book a place.

East Anglian Air Ambulance launch momentous campaign to become a 24/7 service

East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) has launched an ambitious plan to become a 24/7 helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) provider by 2020.

The charity currently operates 365days-a-year but not 24-hours-a-day, meaning that if an incident happened between midnight and 07:00 there is currently no HEMS provision in the region. The charity is aiming to cover this gap and become a full 24/7 HEMS service by 2020. To do that they need to raise an additional £1 million a year to fund the operation.

The type of incidents the charity attend – serious road traffic collisions, cardiac arrests, traumatic injuries and other medical emergencies - do not stop when their crew go offline. While a 24/7 service seemed to make sense, the charity needed to be sure, so have been gathering evidence to prove it. They worked with the East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST), who task them, to review incidents over the course of a year where critical care was required but unavailable. They also assessed the need first-hand by trialling an overnight service via rapid response vehicle (RRV) four days a week from the Norwich base. The results of this work confirmed a significant region-wide need for overnight critical care, particularly

in rural Norfolk. In the first twelve months of the overnight trial they attended 220 missions, but they say that with the helicopter they could do so much more.

Matthew Jones, Director of Operations at EAAA, said “Becoming a 24/7 service by air will provide the people of East Anglia with a service that has not previously been available. By operating 24/7 we believe that we will treat approximately 600 more patients every year. Patient care is at the heart of everything we do at EAAA, so if we can be there for 600 more people each year and further reduce the impact of trauma and medical emergencies in the community then this is a great step forward for us. We currently need to raise £12M a year to operate our service, and it will cost an additional £1m a year to fund a full 24/7 operation.”

Steve Jones has witnessed first-hand the care that EAAA provide. Steve was riding his motorcycle in Norfolk, when a car he overtook turned into his path catapulting him from his motorbike, head-first through a brick wall and into a ditch filled with water. Steve was unconscious and submerged under the water.

The Anglia One crew was activated and, travelling by helicopter, they arrived on scene 21 minutes later. By this time the ditch was filled with Steve’s blood and the team knew they had to get him out quickly. Steve was making gurgling noises but remained unconscious. The crew made the decision to sedate and intubate him to take control of his breathing. He was then packaged and flown to Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Steve had suffered such a traumatic head injury that the team thought he would not

We are looking for a volunteer to take on the vital role of Fundraising Chairperson to lead the fundraising efforts at Happisburgh Lifeboat Station. This role will help us save lives at sea by raising income and support from the local community.

This role would involve leading, guiding and motivating the branch members to deliver a vital fundraising

Training to fulfil your volunteer role will be provided.

What you will get from this role: you will join a motivated and enthusiastic team, gain valuable experience, meet new people within your community, receive reasonable travel and lunch expenses.

survive.

Steve remained in hospital for 10 weeks, but last November he walked in to the Norwich base to meet the EAAA team and the EEAST land paramedics who also provided treatment on scene. Not only has he suffered no lasting affects, but he is also in the process of finishing his PhD in Software Engineering.

Steve and his wife Claire said; “My wife and I are extremely grateful for the East Anglian Air Ambulance and their East of England Ambulance Service colleagues. I am in no doubt that these heroes saved my life that day and I am optimistic and positive for the future which includes completing the last parts of my PhD and embarking on a Software Engineering industrial research career.”

If Steve’s accident had happened between the hours of midnight and 7am he would not have the received the treatment he did, and it is unlikely that he would have survived.

The charity say they are already incredibly grateful to the community for all their support, but are asking for help to raise the additional £1m a year needed to operate 24/7 so they can save more lives like Steve’s. If you would like to find out more about the campaign or to donate, please visit www.mission247.co.uk. You can also follow them on Facebook as ‘East Anglian Air Ambulance’ and on Twitter as @EastAngliAirAmb. You will need to have excellent interpersonal skills, basic IT skills, ability to chair meetings and carry out public speaking, ability to delegate tasks effectively, be capable of influencing people, show tact and diplomacy.

If you are interested in this vital role at Happisburgh then please contact Happisburgh Lifeboat Station on 01692 583269, if no answer leave your name and number and we will get back to you.

the tragic side of policing that he had to learn to deal with – dealing with the death of an addict on Christmas morning before returning home to family celebrations later in the day.

Traditionally libraries are seen as quiet places for browsing and study – not the case in Mundesley on Friday 1 March!

Instead waves of laughter rippled round the room as ex-policeman Duncan Morris entertained his audience with tales of his life in the force in both Yarmouth and the Metropolitan Police. The talk was the latest in a series put on by Mundesley Library Friends to encourage increased use of the Library.

Duncan told of numerous amusing incidents, which he insists are all true such as when his colleague informed him a passing car was stolen – “How do you know?”, “It’s my car!” Interspersed with the humour were reflective insights into

The hour long talk seemed to pass in minutes before Duncan finished the evening’s entertainment by taking questions from a fascinated audience.

A donation was made to Duncan’s chosen charity – Grapevine Talking Newspapers for the Blind – and the remaining money will be used by the Library Friends to fund further equipment and improvements at the Library. This event was the third successful talk hosted by the Library Friends and held at Mundesley Library on Friday evenings. Further events are planned and the next talk will be on Friday 17 May at 5pm when Bunty Gotts from the National Trust will give us a behind the scenes look at the Library at Blickling, the perils that threaten the collection and measures taken by the Trust to combat

Share as One for Mental Health

A new charity has been set up in North Norfolk as a response to the loss of statutory services for the mentally ill, and also because of serious financial cuts to many voluntary organizations who have traditionally supported those who have suffered from mental disorder. The name of the charity is ‘Share as One for Mental Health’.

The objects of the charity are primarily the advancement of psychological well-being, mental health and suicide prevention. We aim to pursue the eradication of the stigma surrounding mental illness, and support the aim of parity of esteem between physical and mental illness. ‘No physical health without mental health’

The aim is to get people together to support each other especially with issues such as advocacy, welfare rights, housing, homelessness, and the need for adequate, swift treatment when in crisis. We also wish to encourage one another to participate in leisure activities which give enjoyment and reduce stress. Our charity is already in partnership with Cromer Football Club where we intend to help maximize the use of the Clubhouse (which is based right next to the new Cromer Medical Centre) for the benefit of the community. A weekly drop-in group will meet there, as well as other support groups. We would also like to join with other voluntary organizations to achieve the establishment of a respite sanctuary for the suicidal, such as the one set up by Samaritans in London called the Maytree Sanctuary.

Four local chess players (David Owen, Jonathan Reeve, Russell Reeve and Heather Enid Wells) have represented Aylsham Chess Club at the EACU (East Anglian Chess Union) 2019 Team Championships, held in Bury St Edmunds. Spring Newsletter from Broadland Chess Club

This month we have two excellent reports to make as BCC continues to provide a strong showing in both national and local tournaments.

Junior Grand Prix and four Broadland players are currently in the top ten: Benjie Perry is 4th, Benedict Ward is 6th, Ruby Perry is 9th and Jacob Davison is 10th. The next tournament in the GP will be in Norwich in March.

The Sheringham Junior Chess Congress was held on Saturday 9 February and members of Broadland chess club featured prominently among the prize-winners. In the under-13 section Benedict Ward finished 3rd - his third consecutive podium finish! In the under-10 section, Jacob Davison and George Hall finished 1st - Jacob won the tournament trophy on sum of progressive scores and George won the North Norfolk Primary Schools' trophy on relative grading performance. In the under-8 section, Ruby Perry was 2nd, Django Stephanides-Price was 3rd and George Artherton won a medal as the top u-7. The tournament is part of the Norfolk

Four senior members travelled to the University of Birmingham by a variety of modes of transport, Gerald by train, Andrew and Ieysaa by car and believe it or not Richard arrived from Belguim via train and foot! However all of this effort was worth it as the team managed to achieve 2nd place in the 20/20 Rapidplay tournament. The picture taken by Roy Hughes shows Gerald Moore proudly displaying the trophy, please excuse the quality as some are better chess players than photographers! One of the players in the 20/20 event, fourteen year old Ieysaa bin-Suhayl,

We are pleased to announce that a charitable trust fund to help projects, events and groups within Northrepps is now under way.

More exciting news … to coincide with the launch of NVT, we will be hosting a fundraising event on Sunday 5 May.

Northrepps Village Trust

This new fund will be known as Northrepps Village Trust (NVT) and inaugurated with the £900+ raised by last year’s panto.

There will be a brand new NVT website, going live in April, detailing the Trust, its aims, how to get involved in events and fundraising, and how to apply for funds.

This fun event will be ‘Walk Northrepps 2019’, aimed at all ages and abilities, families with children and walkers who enjoy the paths and byways in and around this beautiful part of Norfolk. Essentially a sponsored walk, there will be a choice of routes from just a mile around the village up to approximately 12 miles that takes in all the adjoining parishes. All routes will start and finish

played in a tournament in Shropshire in early January and, in the course of five rounds, played not one but two Grand Masters! Impressively, he drew with both of these elite players. Many congratulations to him.

I hope that all of our readers are enjoying the lovely sunshine. As usual BCC meets at the Kings Head Coltishall, on Monday and Wednesday evenings, the Junior club on Mondays. Anyone who is interested in finding out more or wishing to join can find us on our webpage, or on our facebook/twitter pages. We welcome new members and visitors.

at the village hall. The walks will take in the opportunity for refreshments at local cafes and pubs. The emphasis will be on a fun day with a route quiz and ‘instagram’ photo opportunities. Details are yet to be finalised, but will be posted here, and around the village soon, with a full press release to follow. We hope you will join us and ‘Walk Northrepps 2019’!
