Royal Air Force Bircham Newton Veterans’ Day In addition to being the centenary of the birth of the Royal Air Force, 2018 will also be the 100th anniversary of the birth of the former RAF station at Bircham Newton.
The first unit to fly from its airfield, No. 3 Fighting School, arrived in May 1918, just one month after the birth of the Royal Air Force. The Fighting School was soon joined by a second unit flying giant Handley Page bombers, designed to bomb Germany from this Norfolk airfield. Hawker Hinds flying over Royal Air Force Flying continued beyond the Bircham Newton Armistice and throughout the interwar years, increasing dramatically during the Second World War. The station was finally closed in the early 1960s, during the height of the Cold War, but flying briefly returned in the mid-1960s, when trials of the Kestrel jump jet were conducted on the airfield.

There will be many attractions for the veterans and their families to enjoy : the RAF Heritage Centre will be open for guided tours, an illustrated talk will be given on the role of Bircham Newton during the Great War, local history groups and service associations have been invited along to exhibit their material and military vehicles and large-scale model aircraft should be on display. Applications now open for Holt Festival-Sir John Hurt Art Prize Leading north Norfolk festival also announces Open Studios scheme One of the east of England’s top art prizes, the Holt Festival-Sir John Hurt Art Prize, is now inviting entries for the 2018 exhibition. The cash prize has been increased to £1,750 and the winning entry will also be exhibited at the prestigious Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich.
The Sir John Hurt Art Prize is open to artists everywhere and in previous years there have been entries from all over the UK. All types of visual art are welcome.
The judges will select a shortlist of 25-30 which will be listed on the festival website and exhibited at the Auden Theatre, Holt between 21-29 July, with the winner announced at a private view on the evening of Sunday 22 July. The exhibition is part of the Holt Festival Art Trail that also takes in many other galleries and exhibition spaces around the town.
Last year’s competition once again attracted an extremely high standard of entries with the winner coming from Norfolk artist Chloe Steele. Her pencil drawing, ‘Beginnings End’, was unanimously selected from over 250 entries and announced by Lady Anwen Hurt (see attached image). Festival organisers have also announced the first Holt Festival Open Studios, a great opportunity for artists within 15 miles of Holt to invite the public to their studios. It will run from 21-23 July between 10am & 5pm and a map detailing participating artists will be available to download from www.holtfestival.org . Open Studios are FREE to visit and offer people the chance to meet artists in their own studios to talk about their work and buy original artworks directly from their creators.
Holt Festival Fine Art Director James Glennie commented ‘The Holt Festival-Sir John Hurt Art Prize and Open Studios are great opportunities for both emerging and established artists. The Prize becomes better known each year with entries coming from further afield and the quality getting better each time, making the new team of distinguished judges job ever more difficult. There are so many talented artists in the area and we hope that the Open Studios will enable many of them to reach new audiences as well as giving the art loving public the opportunity to meet and learn about our local artists’.
The closing date for both Prize entries and Open Studios applications is midnight Sunday 17 June. This year’s Art Prize judges are renowned painter and printmaker Eileen Cooper RA, modern and contemporary British art specialist Robert Upstone, who was a senior Tate curator for 23 years, and Lady Anwen Hurt who has maintained a life-long interest in the visual arts and was married to actor/artist Sir John Hurt. Sir John Hurt Art Prize and Open Studios entry forms can be downloaded from www.holtfestival.org/whats-on/art-prize. Artists with queries about Open Studios should email openstudios@holtfestival.org
The 2018 Holt Festival runs from 21 – 29 July and has become acknowledged as the leading new festival in the county. The charming Norfolk Georgian country town comes alive for an exuberant week of international music, drama, visual art, dance, comedy and children’s shows. It recently announced its first highlights and the full programme will be revealed on 30 April. www.holtfestival.org

‘MOMENTOUS TIMES’
And what a ‘momentous afternoon’ it was when, on 7 April, ‘Three’s Company’ came to High Kelling Village Hall with their evocative performance based on the actual diaries of five diverse women in Europe during World War I, and the devastating effects on their lives.
In August 1914, we were introduced to Sarah, middle aged and living in Scotland, to Elfriede the 12 year-old German schoolgirl, to Laura the New Yorker married to a Polish aristocrat in Poland, to English Florence, by then 27 years old and already a nurse with the Russian army, and to Olive, a rather brash young Australian. As each of their stories unfolded in chronological order, and through the dramatic portrayal of each of the characters, we learned of their lives as they became aware of the changes and conflicts surrounding them, and the dramatic and dreadful events of their own personal war. We heard of the horrors they encountered during their journeys through war-torn Europe, the terrible decisions to be made, the fear, the joy of finding love and the heartbreak of losing it, their thoughts on the darkest of days, and ultimately how their valiant efforts and experiences changed their lives forever.

During the course of their war, each of the five women became involved with the Red Cross, witnessing their valiant aid work at first hand. It was this connection that led the ladies of ‘Three’s Company’ to compile and perform ‘Momentous Times’ as a celebration of that work, the final performances of which will be at West Acre Theatre and Gressenhall Church on 11 November.
At the end of an emotional, sometimes funny but always thought-provoking afternoon, we were proud to have raised the grand sum of ÂŁ400 which has been donated to the British Red Cross. Our grateful thanks go to the ladies of ‘Three’s Company’ for their brilliant and unpaid performance, to everyone who came to support us, and to the Committee who provided such delicious home-made cakes to go with our tea!

Top Awards Celebration at Muckleburgh On Saturday 28 April 80 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers were presented with their Bronze, Silver and Gold Chief Scout Awards, and District Youth Commissioner Ed Cubitt received his DofE Gold Award at our North East Norfolk District Top Awards Celebration at the Muckleburgh Collection on the coast at Weybourne. District Secretary Lorraine Henriksen writes “Because these awards are special, District Commissioner Paul Henriksen explained that we try to not just make a presentation of a certificate, but to make an event which is special and memorable, fun and educational and we most definitely fulfilled all our objectives.
By mid-afternoon we were getting really sorry for Mike the driver of the Armoured Personnel Carrier who was getting wetter and colder with every trip! The Leaders and more importantly, the young award holders were all having too much fun to even notice that the sun wasn’t shining. Even the families were
standing outside taking pictures and watching their children going around the course from the viewing platform and were also able to tour the museum which had 25 working tanks and over 150 military vehicles, plus thousands of related items on display while the young people were completing their activities. It all goes to show what a success the day was.
Our young people had an amazing experience all round and following the activities the presentations were made in the cafeteria by Sir Michael Savory, owner of the museum. He was joined by Robin Baden Clay and his wife Sue – Robin is a grandson of Sir Robert Baden-Powell the founder of the Scouting movement. They had managed to find a slot for us in their busy diaries and had travelled from Dorset up to Norfolk especially for our event.
with the help of the families who attended we have been able to contribute generously to this fund - the success of the day was reflected in the donations we received.
Robin & Sue Baden Clay also managed to fit-in a visit to check-out the new West Runton Group HQ Extension which they missed in January!

BEAUTIFUL FRIESIAN HORSE MAYA CELEBRATES 14th BIRTHDAY WITH SPECIAL PARTY
summer, including donkey duo Wiggins and Wacko on Sunday 10 June, appaloosa pony Cookie on Sunday 24 June, cheeky Shetland ponies The Gangsters on Sunday 22 July, and handsome horse Gulliver on Sunday 26 August.
Meanwhile, Redwings’ second Norfolk visitor centre - Redwings Caldecott near Great Yarmouth – is also gearing-up to celebrate its Adoption Stars’ birthdays too, including beautiful mare Victoria on Sunday 27 May, cuddly Shetland pony Sampson on Sunday 1 July, friendly pony Cauli on Sunday 29 July, handsome Shire cross Fox on Sunday 5 August, delightful donkey Denise on Sunday 2 September and little donkey Esther on Sunday 28 October.
Beautiful rescued Friesian mare Maya celebrated her 14th birthday over earlier this month with a special party at the charity’s Aylsham Visitor Centre.
To find out more about the Adoption Scheme or to sponsor a Redwings Adoption Star, visit www.redwings.org.uk/adopting Both Redwings Aylsham, in Spa Lane, Aylsham, NR11 6UE, and Redwings Caldecott, in Beccles Road, Fritton, NR31 9EY, are open every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 10am to 4pm. Entry is free and dogs on leads are welcome.
Maya was rescued in 2010 with six other horses who had been found in terrible conditions on a site in Essex. Going without food and care for so long left Maya very weak, anaemic and worm-ridden, and her muscles were wasting away. One of her friends had even sadly passed away from neglect.
Despite fears she would not survive, Maya made a full recovery thanks to months of intensive veterinary care. Her former owner was also found guilty of causing suffering. Now free to live a happy and healthy life at Redwings, her dazzling looks and friendly nature soon made Maya a favourite with visitors and she became a member of Redwings’ popular Adoption Scheme in 2014.
Supporters can sponsor Maya for just £15 a year, with funds going towards the 1,500 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules in Redwings’ care nationwide. Anyone who adopts one of Redwings’ 23 “Adoption Stars” can visit their four-legged friend for free, as well as receive updates on their life at the Sanctuary and an invitation to their birthday party. On Maya’s big day, visitors will had chance to enjoy cuddles with the birthday girl, join in party games and a quiz trail, and then watched her tuck into her very own birthday cake!
Alison Lanchester, Redwings’ Head of Fundraising said: “Maya overcame cruelty and neglect to become the beautiful horse we see today. She’s a friendly girl who loves a cuddle, so we hope as many people as possible will be there to celebrate with her on the day.” And if partying with one beautiful horse isn’t enough, Redwings Aylsham’s other Adoption Star residents will also be celebrating their birthdays with parties this

Hedgehog Haven
At last with some milder weather, it has been very busy here with lots of hogs being picked up and taken off to be released.
At the time of writing nine have successfully gone back to the wild, with more to go next week.
A busy weekend is coming up, to mark the start of Hedgehog Awareness Week. I will be at Bure Valley Railway Aylsham on Saturday 5 May and Hadfields Garden Centre in North Walsham on Sunday 6 and Monday 7 May.
It is with sadness that I have to report that Willow has passed away peacefully in her sleep. The pigment was gone from her feet and nose, a sign of old age, so I feel that was the cause of her passing. Apologies to her finder for not letting you know personally but you left me the wrong phone number so I could not contact you. With Spring here at last, hedgehogs should be out and about looking for tasty morsels. Please leave out a shallow dish of kitten (meat flavour) biscuits and even more important a shallow dish of water if you possibly can.

Dementia Action Week 2018
person's GP to assist. Therefore, just because you are living with dementia it does not necessarily mean you are unable to make these documents. However, it is important to bear in mind that time is of the essence and it is sensible to ensure you seek legal advice as early as possible, while you are still in a position to pass the legal test for capacity.
- Taking action for a dementia friendly Norfolk
Monday 21st May 2018 marks the start of Dementia Action Week in the UK. An initiative set up by the Alzheimer’s Society which aims to encourage people to take action to improve the lives of those affected by dementia.
As a firm, we have made a number of pledges to play our part in making Norfolk a more welcoming and helpful place for people living with dementia. We are a member of the Norwich City Dementia Action Alliance and hold regular dementia awareness sessions and training workshops to help raise awareness, understand what it's like to live with dementia and to help create a dementia friendly community. All of our lawyers are 'dementia friends' and we are proud to be a dementia friendly business. One of the common questions we regularly face as Solicitors is what can an individual, who has been diagnosed with dementia, do in terms getting their legal affairs in order. The answer to this is simple, if you or someone you care about has been diagnosed with dementia, it is important to consider whether two documents are in place and up-to-date – a Will and a Lasting Power of Attorney. What is a Will?
A Will is a legal document that sets forth your wishes regarding the distribution of your Estate. It allows you to decide what happens to your property and possessions upon death and choose who they are bequeathed to.
Commentary by Joseph Keeping, Solicitor in Wills, Trusts and Probate team covering North Walsham and Sheringham offices.
To find out more or discuss your individual requirements in further detail, our dedicated Lasting Power of Attorney solicitors are on hand to help, contact the North Norfolk team today, call North Walsham, 01692 660230 or Sheringham 01263 823398. Please note from Monday 21st May our new North Walsham office address is 46-47 Market Place, North Walsham, NR28 9BT our telephone number will remain the same.
What is a Lasting Power of Attorney ("LPA")?
Having a Lasting Power of Attorney in place is just as important as having a Will. There are two different types of Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA). One relates to 'Property and Financial Affairs' and the other relates to 'Health and Welfare'. Both Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) appoint trusted people (attorneys) to act on a person's behalf should they lose the mental capacity to make decisions for themselves regarding financial matters or general welfare. It therefore helps to give you the reassurance of knowing your wishes will be respected if you ever become unable to make decisions for yourself.
We provide a full range of legal services for businesses and individuals in North Norfolk
I have a diagnosis of Dementia - can I still make these documents?
There is a common misconception that a diagnosis of dementia prevents you from making or amending these documents, however, this is not the case. The legal test for capacity to make a new Will or Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) is decision specific and applied on a case by case basis. This means that whether an individual has capacity to make a new Will or Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) will be very much dependant on their personal circumstances at the time of giving the instructions.
Due to continual expansion, our North Walsham office is moving...
When we meet to take the initial instructions, the solicitor can assess whether the person has sufficient capacity to make a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) or Will. If the solicitor has any concerns about a person's capacity they can ask the
From Monday 21st May, our new North Walsham office address is:
Spring Bank Holiday at Thorpe Market Church - Visit our Churchyard
The churchyard is looking beautiful after the dismal weather of recent months. Primroses, bluebells, violets of different hues and a sea of comfrey in the Hazel Grove.
The resident bees are becoming active, the bug hotel is open for business and we shall soon be welcoming refugee hedgehogs.
Sunday 27 May will be a day of varied activities for all the family. The churchyard is renowned in conservation circles for the great diversity of its plant life. In February in excess of 1200 people visited the snowdrops and enjoyed cakes and hot drinks.
Now the end of May is the time to see all the other wild flowers looking their best, including several species that are on the endangered list. The event will run from 11am until 4pm and there will be the usual array of homemade cakes. Entry is of course free.
Norfolk Wildlife Trust will be on hand, with activities for all ages including: • Churchyard Bioblitz - How much can be identified? • Churchyard Wildlife Quiz Trail – Can it be found? • Bat making – Definitely NOT the cricketing variety • Time to browse the used book selection • Enjoy some live music on the organ

A Grove Miscellany
A few reminiscences of 75 years at The Grove, by John Graveling.
Part 27 1978 to 2005 Continued
In my days as a “Hippy!”. ....
Another intriguing gentleman is Mr Walker who comes along with his wife and usually stays in the Bungalow. He at one time worked for a brewery delivering beer barrels. He has big strong forearms but sadly now has a few health problems. I am not sure how it comes about but he has had dealings in knives and each time he comes he brings me a knife, which I then have to pay 1 penny for – it is apparently a tradition. I now have a supply of about ten knives ranging from little tiny fruit knives to a 15 inch long machete. They are all very very sharp. When he goes out walking he has a knobbly stick and he wears his shorts and an Australian type bush hat (the sort which have corks dangling from them although he does not have the corks). He does wear
other necessities. Sadly he contracted cancer and died in 2010 The Convey’s came for a number of years. They were from North Side Clapham Common. A lovely couple. He was always dressed immaculately. She was more like an expressive bubbly chorus girl even in her late 60’s. She would overwhelm you with affection and often would bring Ann a brightly coloured bag for toiletries – an awful pink or sickly green. Maybe she chose the colours without knowing due to her poor eyesight. She would bring an amazing assortment of Teddy Bears which she would arrange all along the head of her bed. What she did with them at night we have no idea. Mr Convey would accept it all quietly with an amused smile. Last time they came sadly her sight was deteriorating quickly. Around 1980 the surgery phoned to ask if we had a pram. Why they should come to us I have no idea! But we did have one in the garage which had been handed down from Ann’s sister Jan and which we had used on a few occasions. A lady called Gladys Francis needed it. She was assisting running a summer camp at Sutherland House School with her
From Teacher to Playwright … Stage Direct are about to showcase a new play by a new playwright to be performed in North Walsham.
The group would like to introduce their man David Starling as a talented writer who will join others from the group in complimenting their zest for home written works. By day, David Starling works with children with autism as a class leader at St Andrew’s School in Aylmerton, near Cromer. Away from the classroom, however, David leads a very different existence. He acts with Stage Direct Theatre Company and with Black Cat Theatre and also writes. Stage Direct have previously produced some of David’s work in the form of comedy sketches and short plays. This June (29 & 30) at the Atrium in North Walsham, Stage Direct will be producing, for the first time, a full length play written by David.
‘Good Morning, Mr Magpie’ is a Norfolk based play about Norfolk characters exploring the safety of home, the desire to chase dreams and all mixed in with a little bit of superstition and a helping of comedy. David is just one more of the Stage Direct writer’s conveyor belt. Last year saw Stage Direct member Ashley Burgoyne’s comedy, ‘The Village Hall’, getting a great reception from an appreciative Atrium audience and plans are currently underway to air a comic play written by another member, Nigel Manson, in early 2019 in the little theatre. Chairman Derek Bull has written a screenplay and is presently putting the finishing touches to his novel while yet another Stage Direct actor, Melissa Collin, is a published poet.

two brothers and, although she must have been in her 70’s she had a baby to cope with. Actually it wasn’t her baby but it was the latest in a long line of babies she had fostered. She had a remarkable story to tell. During the war she was on her way home after an air raid when she heard a small child crying in the rubble of a bombed house. Gladys took in the child and began fostering. Later she discovered the child’s mother. Having once started, she carried on fostering and eventually reached 200 children. Gladys knew Cromer because she had been involved in the Beach Mission here many years earlier and later on would help run the house party with her two brothers, which was for children from London. Sadly one of her brothers was killed in a car accident in the mid 1980’s. But Gladys carried on and regularly kept in touch with her fostered children who, even though grown up, would often accompany her. A wonderful testimony to her Christian Faith. She eventually featured in Eamon Andrews TV show “This is your life”.

Cantamus May Concerts Following on from the success of the most recent national CoMA concert (Contemporary Music for All) at West Runton Church, in spite of the March snow drifts, Cantamus will be performing a new repertoire of music ‘From the Bavarian Highlands’ by Sir Edward Elgar, one of the greatest and best known English composers, and ‘Folk-Song Settings’ by Percy Grainger, an Australian composer who played a prominent role in the revival of interest in British folk music in the early years of the 20th
J’s WEDDING CARS
century on Friday 25 May at Thorpe Market Church at 7pm and Saturday 26 May at 7pm at West Runton Church (conducted by Philip Adams, piano accompaniment by Michael Finnissy).
Percy Grainger’s folk song settings, mostly from Lincolnshire, are some of the most sensitive and beautiful ever written. Grainger collected with wax-cylinder recording equipment, and always credited the singers in published copies. The English Folk Song and Dance Society initially refused to house this material, and it was deposited in the Library of Congress in Washington USA. Fortunately, copies are now held by the British Library in London.
Surround your day with elegance and romance on your special day. Arrive in a beautiful authentic vintage car painted in ivory and black.
The folksong elements in Elgar’s 'From the Bavarian Highlands’ are made up, but no less
enchanting. Later on Elgar’s celebration of England, although held to be somewhat jingoistic, is actually melancholic and equivocal. We must remember that Elgar’s genius was first recognised in Germany, perhaps in the Bavarian Highlands!
Cantamus began as a community choir at St Margaret’s church in Thorpe Market, part of a strong musical tradition that has flourished in the church for a number of years. Under the Directorship of Philip Adams the choir has successfully been expanding its repertoire and scope. Those wishing to join the choir are welcome to get in touch. We rehearse on Thursday evenings 7.30 – 9.30pm. For further information please contact the Secretary 07944 731081/01263 833847

Repton Celebrations Continue
Aylsham church was brimming to capacity on 29 April when Ensemble East, a new chamber orchestra for the East of England, gave their inaugural concert of classical music in celebration of the 200th anniversary of Humphry Repton’s death.
On a grey and wet Sunday afternoon the audience were treated to an exuberant performance of some very joyous music from the pens of Mozart, Haydn and Mendelssohn, with a little bit of Warlock included to add variety. To follow on from this very successful concert Music Matters presents a lunchtime concert recital, Sound the Trumpet : Music from the Baroque to 21st century, also as part of the Repton 200 festival on 23 May at 1pm in Aylsham Parish Church, NR11 6EL.

Briston Organ Show Success
The last Briston Organ Show back on 23 March was a great success, with well over 100 music lovers filling the Copeman Centre to thrill to the amazing multi-keyboard skills of the very likeable Pete Shaw. He travelled all the way from his home in North Wales to entertain us with a wide range of music, using a double KORG keyboard arrangement with a set of bass pedals thrown in for good measure.
Starting with a lively ‘Copcabana’ he went through other favourites such as ‘Send In The Clowns’, a classical choral piece called ‘Benedictus’ which featured a pre-recorded Welsh Male Voice Choir, loads of Big Band standards, and ended with the ‘633 Squadron’ and ‘Dambusters March’, which commenced with the sounds of the London blitz, including the chimes of Big Ben, anti-aircraft fire, and bombers overhead - quite awe-inspiring altogether!

As usual, the show’s refreshments and raffle takings benefitted the Copeman Centre - this time to the tune of £197. Our own fundraising stall for the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital made £54, and after Pete had mentioned in passing that he was soon to set off on a John o’Groats to Lands End cycle ride with two friends in aid of a Children’s Cancer Charity, our patrons dug deep in their pockets as they left for home, and sent him on his way back to Wales with a further £55.30 for the fund what a lovely audience you were, and Pete sends his sincerest thanks to you all for your kind gesture.

The full tenth anniversary programme for Holt Festival 2018, North Norfolk’s award winning, international feast of John Hurt the arts has been announced. The Festival brings outstanding theatre, music, comedy, literature, talks, children’s and visual art events to the picturesque Georgian town for eight days, from 21 to 29 July. For the tenth anniversary year Stash Kirkbride has taken the helm as Artistic Director, and he has delivered a programme that combines the best of national and international talents with some of the cream of our own Norfolk performers. We all still greatly miss Sir John Hurt who was such a great supporter of the Festival and I’m thrilled that we are able to show his paintings for the first time anywhere in the world. Gresham’s School, Holt Parish Church, the Community Centre and the Holt Book Shop have supported us from the very start and our gratitude also goes to our media partners Eastern Daily Press, North Norfolk News and Future Radio.’

North Norfolk Photographic Society Most camera clubs have a competition among their members each year to give opportunities to show what those members believe to be their best work of the year - the competition is known as ‘The Annual’. North Norfolk Photographic Society’s Annual for projected images was held on Wednesday 2 May and was judged by Peter Yeo.
Peter is well-known to the Club - he has judged there before and has also been to show some of his own pictures. He is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society (among other distinctions) and really does know what he’s talking about! As usual, the competition was in two parts, the first for ‘novices’ was won by Heather Green with a Winter Scene at Felbrigg. Second, Val Dawson’s ‘All Hung Up’ showed anchors, ropes and fishermen’s floats hanging on a breakwater and
windswept beach. Second, Judith Wells’ ‘Black Grouse Lekking’ showed a stage in the sexual lives of 2 black grouse and Diana Knight’s ‘Panic Attack’ displayed a very frightened herd of zebra just about getting away from a hungry lioness in an African river gully.
third was again Val Dawson with a close-up photograph of a stonemason at work.

Enjoy The Summer with Blakeney Rowing Club
A warm welcome to all those who have joined Blakeney Rowing Club recently.
For those who have not, a great summer of activity is close at hand. Come and join people of all ages who love nothing better than to row from Blakeney towards the Point or, if the tide is right, towards Cley. These expeditions are not to be missed and provide an excellent source of outdoor exercise in great company. No previous experience is necessary and you will be coached by safety aware, experienced rowers. See the club website at rablakeney.wordpress.com for some great pictures of club members, known as ‘Crabbers’, in action either rowing or refurbishing the boats. The club has two skiffs – Hoi Larntan and Bluejacket – both made by Club experts and helpers. They each hold four rowers and a cox and are suitable for recreational and competitive rowing. Typically, an outing will last for about two hours with breaks for conversation and refreshment.
Sheringham Mobility
A sunny shore is a favourite place for a coffee stop. An evening row may well end with Crabbers adjourning to a local pub. There are competitive events scheduled throughout the season, but there is no requirement to participate in these. The main pleasure lies in discovering a new sport in beautiful surroundings.
You are entitled to three sample rows before deciding whether to join. You will always be looked after. If you are interested in experiencing rowing, socially or competitively, contact Tom, Captain of Rowing, on 01263 761570. Other information will be on the club website shown above. Leave winter behind. Join the Crabbers.

Treatments to get you ready for summer
Summer is round the corner and the sooner we start to prepare for it, the more time we have to show results. Here is a selection of our treatments that you can benefit from. Our therapists offer treatments that can be nice and relaxing experiences and do not cost a lot. FACE - Why not book a diamond microdermabrasion and combine it with a gentle chemical peel and cool light for a glowing skin before your holiday? This will give you a well deserved ‘me time’, a bit of pampering and also benefit your skin health. If you wish to take the next step- a laser facial may just be the thing you need for skin toning and brightening. Further up the scale are our laser resurfacing treatments that do require a little recovery time in exchange for better, more visible results or to address specific skin concerns such as acne scars or lines and wrinkles. Of-course we are experts in natural looking injectable treatments and fillers carried out in a safe and comfortable manner. If it is a major change you are after- a wide range of cosmetic surgical treatments are also available.
VARICOSE AND THREAD VEINS - Changing options for the treatment of unwanted veins. Days of open surgery, prolonged bruising and painful recovery are long gone. Today non-invasive methods are replacing surgery at a very fast rate. So much so that NICE -The National Institute of Clinical Excellence has updated its guidelines on the treatment of varicose veins. It has recommended Endovenous laser treatment as the preferred option, foam injections second and surgery where the first two options are not suitable or declined. So come and see us to help you get rid of those unwanted veins anywhere on your face or body.
in laser safety. We have helped thousands of patients remove unwanted hair, ingrowing hair and rashes, pseudofolliculitis barbae (razor bumps) and even helped patients with polycystic ovaries. Thanks to our proven gold-standard lasers and extensive experience we are able to treat every skin type- from very fair to dark skin patients.
FAT AND CELLULITE REDUCTION - This is the perfect time to consider laser liposuction for reducing unwanted areas of fat and stubborn cellulite. The procedure is carried out purely under local anaesthesia on a walk-in, walk-out basis and most patients are recovered by 3-5 days. Medically supervised weight loss treatments and non-surgical body contouring are also available.
REDUCE EXCESSIVE UNDERARM SWEATING - Higher temperatures mean worsening of sweating issues for some of us. If you suffer from increased underarm sweating, worry about sweating through your clothes, work in close contact with others or in hot conditions or have to make public presentations then you may consider treatment. We offer injectable treatments and also revolutionary laser sweat reduction procedure to destroy sweat glands.
Did you know we can remove unsightly moles and blemishes without the knife? We offer treatment options for a variety of conditions so check our website out for more information at www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call 0800 0430737.
SAFE AND EFFECTIVE LASER HAIR REMOVAL AND TATTOO REMOVAL FOR ALL SKIN TYPES - Why it is a great idea to see us. When it comes to laser hair and tattoo removal it is the Wild West in this country. There is no shortage of new places opening up at every corner. We are seeing increasing number of patients who are either dissatisfied or have been harmed because of poorly trained and unregulated providers and cheap copycat or downright dangerous and unapproved machines. As we all know one size does not fit all. There is simply no machine, which is suitable for every person’s needs. With this in mind we have invested heavily in modern high-end medical machines that have undergone rigorous testing and evaluation. Library celebrates 50th with week of events North Walsham Library is ready to mark its 50th anniversary with a week of special events, children’s activities and celebrations.
And staff are keen to hear from any library users who have special memories of the building over the past half-century. The distinctive building on New Road, in the shape of an eight-pointed star, cost £14,274 and was officially opened on 23 May 1968. It replaced a library service which had operated for many years in a former billiards room behind the King’s Arms pub in the town centre. The new North Walsham library opened with a total 14,000 books including, for the first time, a children’s section with 2,000 titles. There was also a new reference section. Two months after the opening, in July 1968, the North Walsham branch got its own mobile library
vehicle to make four-weekly visits to surrounding north Norfolk villages. A van had previously operated from Norwich.

Open Studios a first at RAF Radar Museum
Local artist Bev Broadhead is RAF Neatishead Radar Defence Museum’s first artist in residence. Her work will be shown as part of the Norfolk and Norwich Festival Open Studios starting on Saturday 26 May.
Bev has been studying objects and artefacts at the museum, once a top secret radar surveillance RAF base near Horning, and represents these extraordinary items of preserved, historical technology in her paintings, seen through the eyes of an artist.
Volunteers at the museum, many of whom are ex RAF employees once stationed at the base, provide an extra resource to visitors. Conversations with volunteers have illuminated Bev’s knowledge of the items on display – once throbbing with energy – they are now sleeping witnesses of World Wars I and II, and Cold War surveillance action. Bev aims to animate these objects and highlight their design as playful and enigmatic sculptural pieces, decoding them in a somewhat altered, but nonetheless fascinating light.
01692 580244
Staithe Rd, Sutton, Norwich NR12 9QS
The library was open from 10am daily except Sunday, closed for an hour every weekday lunchtime, and closed at 5pm except on Mondays and Thursdays - when it stayed open until 8pm - and Saturday which was a half day.
Bev has spent all her spare time over the winter months investigating and painting objects at the museum.
Museum Manager Gregory Hayman said "It is a huge privilege to have an artist of Bev's calibre as our first artist in residence. It is also the first time that the Radar Museum has been a location for the Open Studios event and we are looking forward to welcoming people who would not normally think of the museum as an art venue. Of course, we have over 200 pictures here, more than many galleries as well as sculptures and sculptural objects, so we have in fact much for the art lover as well as those interested in the secret history of air defence and radar.' The exhibition will be free to see as part of Norfolk and Norwich Festival Open Studios. Bev will also be giving two talks on Saturday 26 May and Saturday 9 June, from 2pm - 3pm where museum admission charges apply. Bev is affected by psoriatic arthritis and will be donating a percentage of any sales of her work to Arthritis Research UK.

Who’s the Daddy?
Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr
The High Court has ordered the daughter of a deceased man to be DNA-tested to verify that she is in fact his biological daughter.
Colin Birtles died intestate, i.e. without having made a Will, in 2013, leaving a terraced house in Oldham and a small amount of cash. He had two daughters, Lorraine and Janice, born in the early 1960s to his late ex-wife Veronica.
Lorraine had lived in Australia for many years. Janice stayed in England. When her father died she obtained from the Probate Court a Grant to administer his estate.
When Lorraine heard of this, she issued a claim for Revocation of Janice’s Grant of Administration, as she wanted to administer her father’s estate herself. She also asked the Court to issue a Declaration that Janice was not entitled to any part of the estate and alleged that Janice was not in fact Colin’s biological daughter.
statements from third parties to the effect that Colin had said as much to several people during his lifetime.
Lorraine is asking the Court to order that Janice submits to a DNA test, to produce scientific evidence whether Colin was Janice’s father. Lorraine would be DNA tested too. A niece who had nothing to do with the dispute would also be tested as a ‘control’.
Janice refused to agree to the DNA test. She dismissed the allegations of her ‘irregular parentage’ as ‘nothing but gossip and hearsay’. Janice said that not only was her mother married to Colin at her birth, but that her birth certificate names Colin as her father, creating a common law presumption that he was her father. Janice said that, after her parents divorced, Colin paid maintenance in her respect until she was 16.
Lorraine’s request for a Court Order forcing Janice to take the DNA test was granted by the Judge who accepted that there were three questions to be decided. SHEPHERDS HUTS These were: first, FOR SALE whether the DNA test would be sufficiently High quality handcrafted bespoke accurate; secondly, SHEPHERDS HUTS. whether the Court had Please telephone for more details authority to make the 01263 861166 Order; and, thirdly, if the or answer was ‘yes’ to both, 07901 812345 whether the Court ought to make the Order in this case.
Lorraine gathered together a number of witness
the case, the Judge agreed to grant the Order for DNA testing and accepted that the Court had inherent jurisdiction to do so.
The Judge made the following points: A DNA test requires merely a saliva sample by mouth, rather like a Search Order for other purposes, and so is not invasive. The test produces a ‘robust conclusion’ one way or the other. Failure to give consent to the DNA testing might amount to Contempt of Court and the Court could also draw an adverse inference case if she refused. against Janice’s
The lessons we learn from this case are not just the obvious human ones but of the benefits of making a Will, especially where one’s family situation is less than straight-forward.

Lord Lieutenant Awards
Norfolk and Suffolk Wing unit, 222 (Broadlands) Squadron have scooped two prestigious awards presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk, Richard Jewson. The ceremony was held amid the splendour of the Queen’s Dragoon Guards’ Officers’ mess at Robertson Barracks, Swanton Morley (formerly RAF Swanton Morley). As a former RAF station, the sight of two blue uniforms in the mess was very welcome indeed in this, the RAF's 100th anniversary year. Warrant Officer Chris Brand (RAFAC) received the Lord Lieutenant’s certificate of meritorious service for his hard work with the ATC. WO Brand is currently the Officer Commanding 222 Squadron and works tirelessly to provide his staff & cadets with as many Corps activities as possible.
Cadet Warrant Officer Joe Middleditch is the epitome of what a cadet is all about. He has worked his way up through the ranks & classifications to reach the very top of the cadet tree. Joe has been made a Lord Lieutenant Cadet for 2018
meaning he will accompany the Lord Lieutenant on official functions. To earn this award Joe has had to work hard on the Squadron, taking on the role of Sports Officer to encourage the cadets to participate in the many events available to all cadets. His responsibilities include selecting & coaching cadets, as well as taking part himself. Both gentlemen richly deserve their awards and Norfolk & Suffolk Wing are extremely proud that they are in the Wing.

NO BIKE. NO EDUCATION. NO FUTURE. CAN YOU HELP?
Chat is 12 years old. Every day she walks two hours to school and two hours back again because she knows education is the key to her future and the future of her country.
Like Chat, many of the poorest students in Cambodia live in remote rural areas where, although there are Primary Schools, there are hardly any Secondary or High Schools. These are located Chat mostly in the towns and with no public transport system, the only way to get there is a long walk down dirt roads which are often impassable in the raining season.
This severely restricts access to education beyond the most basic level and prevents young people like Chat achieving the grades they need for university or training.
The answer? Bicycles! Simple and effective. In Cambodia a bicycle costs around £40 and will be used not just by the student but by their siblings and
neighbours too so it’s real value for money.
But many families simply cannot afford to buy sturdy bikes, suitable for the rough terrain so North Norfolk-based charity Support Cambodia (Charity No. 1160483) are raising funds to buy at least 20 bikes for children to get to school.
The charity hopes to raise the £800+ needed at their 7th Annual Plant Sale to be held in North Walsham on Saturday 19 May.
In addition to the usual ‘100s of plants at low prices’, there will be Bake, Produce and Craft Stalls and a Cafe serving drinks and hot food.
As the 19th is also the ‘ Wedding of the Year’ there’ll be a royal theme to the event with TV coverage available for those who’d like to ‘Support Cambodia’ but don’t want to miss the events in Windsor.

Eyes are very precious and we tend to take them for granted. Gradually, however, they can create their problems. It was not a loss of sight but weakness in one eye causing strain and migraine for me. Spectacles with different lenses, magnifying glasses – you name it, most of it we tried. The final was large print books.
I confided in the gentlemanly library deliverer at a previous home that I suspected that the most talented and fluent writers, Churchill for example, are not found in this medium. “Why do you not try talking books?” he asked. That was the breakthrough. When moving to Mundesley I obtained these audio books from the local library where always I have found the librarians pleasant and very helpful. When physical limitations closed in, the service was continued at my recent Care Home where two lovely ladies come round the fourth Friday in the month with a large box full of them. One of the invaluable assets for me with these books occurs when I am ill, needing to distract the mind, escaping me from the sick room.
I cannot express enough my thanks for this wonderful service and the help it has been for me” Marie Everton.

Norfolk town parties for Ethiopia Aylsham Town Hall to host charity fundraiser for Hospice Ethiopia A Norfolk town is getting ready to party in aid of a charity in Ethiopia.
On Saturday 14 July Aylsham Town Hall will host an all-ticket party to raise much needed funds for Hospice Ethiopia. The event includes a buffet dinner, with many ingredients donated by local farmers and suppliers, as well as dancing to a live rock band and a classical musicale by the North Norfolk Ensemble. Sue Mumford, a specialist nurse at Priscilla Bacon Lodge, is chair of Hospice Ethiopia UK. Last year the Norfolk-based charity raised over £30,000 for Hospice Ethiopia, while the Norwich Diocese’s Lent Appeal raised over £40,000 to finance a new vehicle to help deliver aid in Addis Ababa. How did Norfolk become so involved in a charity based thousands of miles away?
“Originally it was about Priscilla Bacon Lodge sending out specialists to train Hospice Ethiopia’s staff in palliative care (care of the dying)” says Sue. “It became clear that the charity desperately needed funding. It gets no money from the Ethiopian government and grants from other charities were getting increasingly harder to source. Hospice Ethiopia is bringing hope to hundreds of desperate people. But even more important, is has become a centre of excellence in Ethiopia and trains hundreds of people to deliver care so its work is reaching thousands. “It only needs about

£70,000 a year so survive – so every penny we can raise makes a real difference. But with more funds they can achieve more. For example, the vehicle funded by the Lent Appeal will allow Hospice Ethiopia to care for many more patients in their own homes.”
Events like the Aylsham Party are a vital part of Hospice Ethiopia UK’s fund raising. “It will be a super night, with a fabulous buffet meal, a bar, and lots of entertainment, including a great live band, the Gentleman Gits, who are sure to get everyone up on the dance floor,” says Sue. “The fact that so many local people help us with donations of food and services is a huge bonus – it means we can keep ticket prices low, attract lots of people and make as much money for Hospice Ethiopia as possible.” Tickets for the Aylsham Party are £20, or £15 if bought before 1 June. For information contact Clare Glenn on 01263 734853, email info@hospiceethiopia.org.uk or visit www.hospiceethiopia.org.uk. Tickets available from Barnwells in Aylsham Market Square.
Alice Crome, Fundraising Coordinator at The Norfolk Hospice says “Thanks to the very kind generosity of Edwards and Blake, Allez Chic and David Young, this event is expected to raise a substantial amount of income for the Hospice. We are extremely grateful for their ongoing support and help with organising, what promises to be a great event.”
Allez Chic will be showing a range of fashions from British and European Designers

Brilliant Broadland in WW1 must see exhibition on now!
At the Museum of the Broads we are proud to announce that our new exhibition is now open and is on until Armistice Day, Sunday 11 November.
It not only covers the local men who fought, but also looks at life on the home front. Did you know the first ever air raid was a bomb dropped from a Zeppelin on a Broadland village? The role of women is also covered in the exhibition looking at their various roles, including the Women’s Land Army.
The exhibition includes a film made in 2014 with local people and Stalham High School. It has some fascinating artefacts, and some great stories including 2 lovely love stories.

Top quality billiards in North Norfolk
The Alby and District billiards and snooker league, has this season seen success in billiards at both county and national level.
In December, 17 year old Harley Dyson of Aylsham (left) won the Norfolk County handicap billiards championship (held at the Maltings club in Kings Lynn) defeating Kings Lynn's Steve Kirk in the final.
In April Harley was runner up in the English under 19s championship, losing a close fought final to Kings Lynn's Nathan Boughen. Harley is showing lots of promise for the future having only taken up playing Billiards less than a year ago.
In February Ian Dennis (centre), from Overstrand, won the Norfolk County Grand Masters (over 40s)
