10th Anniversary Aylsham Food Festival a great success
From jugglers to cookery demonstrations and Kids Cooking Workshops to chocolate making, this year’s Aylsham Food Festival, organised by Slow Food Aylsham, was sure to provide something for Norfolk foodies! Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Festival started on Wednesday 30 September with a talk in the library about Norwich’s chocolate history plus a Harvest Lunch in Aylsham’ parish church which also played host to the next two days of Kids Cooking Workshops. Children from the Aylsham Cluster’s primary schools were tasked with making a fresh fruit sponge to take home and this was baked off at the town’s Co-op store. The Co-op also kindly supplied most of the ingredients for these events which proved very popular with the youngsters. Friday morning featured Aylsham Country Market where samples of the Market’s many products were available to taste. Friday evening saw the traditional Food Festival Gala Dinner at Aylsham High School. Over 110 guests sat down to a splendid 5-course meal which was sourced, prepared, cooked and served by students,
led by their Catering Captain Molly Bowyer. Head of the Hospitality & Catering department, Jason Baxter, was overseeing the proceedings with assistance from two local chefs, Alastair Bradshaw, catering manager at the National Trust’s Felbrigg Hall and Steve Norgate, head chef at the Beechwood Hotel in North Walsham. Helping ‘front of house’ was Adam Fields from the Dales Country House Hotel in Upper Sheringham. The proceeds of a raffle held during the evening, plus a donation from ticket sales, allowed Slow Food Aylsham to make a donation of over £700 to the Liz Jones Memorial Fund for Children, set up last year in memory of one of the founders of the organisation. After dinner speaker was Chairman of Norfolk Food & Drink Ltd, Sarah de Chair, who spoke warmly of the school and its students, praising the high standard of cuisine and serving skills on display. “Thank you so much for inviting me to your dinner this year”, she said, “It was a wonderful experience and lovely to see first-hand what everyone has been talking about for years.”

Slow Food Aylsham dubbed the penultimate day of the Festival ‘Showcase Saturday’. Attracting large numbers of visitors to the town, it featured a wide range of events, from a cookery demonstration kitchen with six top Norfolk chefs, to family cooking workshops, chocolate making, sugar craft and apple pressing. Lighthearted entertainment was provided by Gordon Blur, the juggling chef and Aylsham’s One Foot in the Groove jazz band. Most of these activities were in the Market Place and Town Hall which also hosted the FARMA-accredited Farmers Market.
Aylsham’s Heritage Centre was the venue for a wine tasting on Saturday evening while the following morning saw the traditional finale to Aylsham Food Festival, the Big Slow Breakfast. Some 70 diners sat down to a ‘Full English’, prepared and cooked by members of Slow Food Aylsham and friends who, once the last guest had departed, treated themselves to brunch with what was left.
Aylsham Food Festival has, in its 10-year
history, evolved to become one of the town’s most important annual events. Chairman of Slow Food Aylsham, Roger Willis, summed it up: “We are very proud to be able to present such a popular event which is designed to appeal to the whole community. Our members work extremely hard to make sure everything runs smoothly and this year has been another tribute to their efforts. Roll on 2016!”

Apple Tarte Tatin Apples are a big part of life here at the Grove. Every spring an (un)willing volunteer is led to the orchard and sent skywards armed with secateurs and definitely a safety harness to lop off the new growth, a precarious business but essential for the good maintenance of the trees. They sit and happily blossom and in the autumn produce the most amazing apples – eaters and cookers – as well as an assortment of plums and pears. We are very lucky to have them and they are very much the apple of the Senior Estate Manager’s eye.
Of course they feature heavily on the menu every year and, occasionally, the kitchen will break into classic French and knock up a beautiful Tarte Tatin for us all to enjoy. Do come in and see us for the best apples in Cromer – and, of course, don’t forget to book your Christmas Party here too!
Ingredients
• 4 apples • 50g of butter, soft • 50g of caster sugar • 375g of puff pastry
Method
1 Cut the apples in half, peel, core and turn to an even, rounded size • 4 apples
2 Place the butter in a tarte Tatin pan (or oven-proof frying pan) and press it out to cover the bottom. Sprinkle with the sugar and set aside. Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4
3 Place the pan on the stove, and melt the butter and sugar together until they start to brown. This should take approximately 10 minutes
4 Roll the puff pastry out to fit the tarte Tatin pan and until it is around 3mm in thickness. Place 7 pieces of apple, cut side up, around the pan containing the butter and sugar mixture, placing 1 in the centre. Cover with the pastry disc and tuck the edges in
5 Finish cooking the tarte in the oven for 50– 60 minutes. Remove and leave to rest a little, then turn the Tatin out by placing a plate upside down over the entire pan and flipping the whole thing over

Lasers for skin health. Our treatments make your skin healthy and delay age related changes.
We live in an age of technological revolutions and breakthroughs. Medicine has also benefited from an explosion in technology. Lasers have completely changed the field of cosmetic dermatology.
A couple of ground breaking studies from California have shown that light-based treatments do not only make the skin appear younger, they are actually making skin healthier and delaying skin ageing. Lasers work not only at a visible level but also at a microscopic, cellular and genetic level. Researchers analysed characteristics of treated skin by taking skin biopsies and found that of the 2265 genes whose expression was altered in aged skin, 1,293 were fully restored to the expression seen in younger skin. After three successive Broadband Light treatments, the re-expressed genes included those associated with longevity and increased life.
A second blinded study showed that patients in the treated group on average had nine years younger looking skin.
Lasers can also be used very successfully to treat acne scarring, facial wrinkles and to achieve skin tightening. These procedures however may require a small amount of recovery time. These can be performed purely under local anaesthesia
For Vein care, we are now routinely able to treat conditions and achieving results which just 10 years ago would have been considered far fetched. In general there is a move away from major surgery and minimally invasive procedures and lasers are capable of achieving similar or better results with less risk of complications.
So can we see anyone with a laser? We see major advances in technology which has resulted in better and better machines becoming available, at the same time there has been proliferation of less than desirable, and sometimes dangerous technology at the lower end of the market. Not all lasers are good and there are a lot of unqualified people using these so do your research before choosing a clinic and/ or a practitioner. In worst case scenario the outcomes can be less than desirable with complications sometimes difficult or impossible to rectify. So don’t take chances and visit a well established and reputable clinic. Preferably a clinic registered with Care Quality Commission, the only regulator of health care in England.
What conditions can your lasers treat? Lasers can very successfully address a number of skin concerns either together or one at a time. This could be visible broken veins and capillaries, birth marks, acne, acne scarring, pigmentation, rosacea or facial blemishes. age spots of face, neck, chest and hands etc. Skin tags, moles and benign lumps and bumps can be vaporised in an instant, in a bloodless procedure and with minimal risk of scarring. Unwanted hair can be removed and tattoos can be faded or removed completely and leg veins can be sealed from inside in a nonsurgical way rather than having to undergo painful stripping operations. We also use lasers to tighten the tissues under the skin as can be achieved with laser liposuction and laser assisted face and neck lift surgery.
Where can we find more information about these treatments? Log on to www.coltishallclinic.co.uk for more information, treatment prices and downloadable information sheets. How can we book an appointment? Call us free on 0800 0430737 or fill our appointment request form on the website and we will contact you.

Speakers Club President visits North Carolina Club
President of North Norfolk Speakers Club, Stuart Richards, recently visited Asheville Speakers Club in North Carolina.
Both clubs are part of Toastmasters International, which has 14,650 clubs worldwide and since 1925 has been helping people from all walks of life to gain confidence in speaking and develop skills in communication and leadership.
‘I thoroughly enjoyed my visit’, said Stuart. ‘I was informed that dress code was very casual and it can be daunting visiting another club, especially wearing shorts! I was quickly put at ease by the warmth of the hospitality I received and as members of Toastmasters there was common ground and shared experiencelike visiting an extended family. I had a lot of fun, learned more about improvised speaking and left with new ideas to bring back to my own club.’
To develop speaking and communication skills, whether at work or socially, join us at North Norfolk Speakers Club..Meetings are on alternate Wednesdays, 6.45pm at North Walsham High School, Spenser Avenue. For more information please visit www.nnsc.co.uk , email northnorfolkspeakersclub@gmail.com or tel. Gillian 01692 650250. Guests and new members are always welcome.

The concert on 28 November will feature Vespers by Norwichbased composer Richard Allain. Sub-titled Songs of the Sea this will be something of a coastal homecoming for this work which was originally commissioned by Southend Festival Chorus in 2011 to reflect the coastal heritage of the area. Over the summer Mr Allain has re-worked and re-orchestrated this piece especially for this north Norfolk performance. The choir will be joined by a line-up of fine soloists including soprano Rosamund Walton, mezzo soprano Evie Anderson and tenor Oliver White. The concert will also include Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis and John Adams’ Shaker Loops which will brilliantly demonstrate the active part which London Mozart Players take in contemporary music.
Thanks to the generous support of Arts Council England, Orchestras Live, North Norfolk District Council and others, this concert presents a rare and wonderful opportunity to see and hear one of the world’s leading chamber orchestras in north Norfolk. LOCAL VOLUNTEERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO DEREHAM WINDMILL COFFEE SHOP
Last month the Windmill coffee shop in Dereham was supported by four new volunteers who helped make coffees, serve sweet treats, and assisted with the overall running of the popular café. The volunteers, who all have learning difficulties and live in and around the Dereham area, are from the national charity Volunteering Matters and will go on to support the Dereham Windmill Coffee Shop in the coming months. The volunteers are currently taking part in two or three ‘taster’ sessions at the coffee shop, with the aim of developing and learning new and appropriate skills to ensure it runs smoothly. The volunteer team, some of whom have had previous catering experience, are looking forward to meeting and serving customers old and new with
the variety of refreshments the coffee shop has to offer. Brian Webb, Dereham Windmill Chairman said “We are pleased to be able to accommodate local volunteers from Volunteering Matters. We have agreed to adopt this proposal on a completely separate day to our normal opening hours and will be trialling the Tuesday openings for a three month period. We hope and encourage the community to support this very good cause.”
For more information about the Dereham Windmill Coffee Shop, based in Greenfields Road, go to www.derehamwindmill.co.uk/. For more information about Volunteering Matters, go to www.volunteeringmatters.org.uk
Ian Drury of Volunteering Matters said “We are delighted that our very enthusiastic volunteers will be able to assist with the running of the coffee shop. Not only will this enable them to help out in their local community, it will also provide them with skills in the industry that can hopefully lead to a job in the future.”
The Wheatsheaf
When Stephen and Daniella took over the pub, although it had historically been a popular, well known venue it had fallen on hard times over the last few years and had been underfunded. Hence the need to renovate the outdoor areas, reinstate the children’s play area, refit the toilets adding a provision for a disabled toilet and baby changing facilities, and generally bringing back to life the business through dedication and tender loving care.
Within 5 months of taking the reins in West Beckham they were awarded a certificate of excellence from Trip Advisor, and anyone who has eaten or visited since their arrival will know why, from the warm and friendly welcome afforded to everyone by Daniella and her lovely team, and the freshly prepared, quality, locally sourced and value for money food available.
menu that included witch’s fingers with blood and guts dip, frogs’ legs, Jack-o-Lantern risotto, Pasta Afraid-o and I-scream! But the best was the baked pumpkin and white chocolate cheese cake. Locals came in their fancy dress and contributed in making the evening even more memorable, for which a prize was given for the best costume. There is a fabulous 6 course Christmas day menu available so if you haven’t already made your arrangements for Christmas Day, hurry up as places are rapidly filling.
But it doesn’t stop there; the second floor of this beautiful building is currently being remodelled to comprise 5 en-suite B&B rooms with beautiful furniture, modern facilities and full amenities. They expect the B&B to be launched before the end of the year and in conjunction with Foodie Bouquet shabby chic tearoom which will service the breakfast buffet and morning and afternoon teas.
In fact the Pork loin in Calvados sauce served with Caramelised Apple Rings has been so popular that Stephen has received many proposals of marriage (one of which was from a gentleman!) and many guests often ask Daniella if they could take her husband home with them, much to her amusement!
Daniella’s philosophy is: “if life gives you lemons, add Gin and Tonic. She adds: at the Wheatsheaf, we have both! Her aim is to infuse this friendly little English Country pub with humour. All of The Wheatsheaf’s advertisements are whimsical and jokes are displayed all around the pub which is a great ice breaker and makes the customers immediately feel at home.
As part of the August Rush series of events held at the Wheatsheaf, Stephen and Daniella were keen to ensure that local charities could also benefit. Capitalising on the large numbers attending, they operated a Raffle with prizes that included meals for 2, bottles of bubbly and a number of football team shirts to name but a few. The raffle raised the best part of £100 and it was donated to a local charity shop in Sheringham, who were pleasantly surprised as well as grateful as they had no idea of the endeavour. Every other month, The Wheatsheaf teams up with Clic Sargent and organizes a charity fund raising race night (in fact there is one happening this November 20th), where a giant screen is displayed and recordings of previously run races (horses, dogs and even pigs!) are selected randomly by the attendees. There is a tote for placing £1.00 bets and you can even win prizes for being an owner, trainer or jockey. The last race night held at the Wheatsheaf raised approximately £400.00 and a great night was had by all.
They like to get creative and this Halloween, the pub and restaurant could not have looked creepier and was complemented by a terrorising

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?
“It’s a common misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I run Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor, qualified Family Mediator and Collaborative solicitor.
As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. The common misconception is that a larger local firm or city firm is better but this is incorrect. A client just pays more.
When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I am one of the few solicitors that offffers a free first appointment so that clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision.
I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.
Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 01263 0 1263 8 823465 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk

Lucky North Walsham Woman Scoops Top Prize in QD Stores’ 30th Birthday Draw Louise Ellis
QD shopper Linda McQuattie, who lives in Trunch, near North Walsham is the proud owner of a brand new Mini Cooper after she won first prize in Norwich-based QD Stores’ ‘Big 30’ 30th anniversary prize draw.
The competition ran throughout their stores, which are located all over the east of England, during September, the month of QD’s birthday. The competition attracted thousands of entries and Mrs McQuattie’s name was the lucky one drawn from the hat.
Her prize is a sparkling new Mini Cooper 3 door Hatch 1.5 in Pepper White which was presented to her by Chief Executive, Nick Rubins at the QD Store at 4 Market Place, North Walsham last month.
The QD Group, which also owns Lathams of Potter Heigham, Cherry Lane Garden Centres and Thing-Me-Bobs as well as QD Stores, opened its first store 30 years ago, and has been celebrating all through September with special offers and the prize draw competition. A delighted Mrs McQuattie said “I am absolutely stunned and incredulous.
I haven’t stopped laughing since I heard about my win!” She was on a spa holiday at Ragdale Hall in Leicestershire when she heard about her surprise success. “I thought the whole thing was a hoax, and so did my family. But I thought I would check out the phone number and the address the email had come from and I found out it was completely genuine!
“I never enter competitions but I was in QD in North Walsham and had a bit of spare time. The competition was so easy to enter and didn’t ask lots and lots of questions so I entered and thought, well somebody’s got to win, but it won’t be me! “I’ve just arranged the insurance and I was asked what the value of the car was and how much I paid for it. I told them that technically the car was free, but I did spend £4.90 in the shop!
”The first thing I’m going to do is take the car home and sit in the drive and press all the buttons!”
QD Stores’ chief executive, Nick Rubins, who himself has worked for the company, founded by his father, since it was started in 1985, said: “We’re all very pleased indeed for Linda and so happy that she won our top prize.
“We had a fantastic response from our customers across all our stores with

thousands of entries coming in as we celebrated our 30th birthday. We have so many loyal customers at all our stores and we were delighted that they could share in our celebrations. We all wish Linda many years of happy motoring in her new Mini!.”
Mrs McQuattie, who was originally from Glasgow before moving to Norfolk 34 years ago, is a regular shopper at QD. “I buy lots of everyday things from QD: they’re so much cheaper than the supermarkets.”
Last week, lucky QD employee, Jill Fisk, who lives in Worlingham, near Beccles, and works at QD Stores owned Cherry Lane Early Dawn Nurseries and Garden Centre in Carlton Colville, near Lowestoft won the QD staff prize draw, when her name was pulled out of the hat to win £3000.

BAKER’S DREAM IS ENDED BY NEW BOY ED
Four times former club champion John Baker’s dream of winning Cromer Squash Club’s prestigious club championship for an unprecedented fifth time, ended last month when one of the club’s newest members, 18 year old student Ed Crookenden, from Salthouse, won what Technical Director Barry Starling described as ‘a magnificent final full of fast, furious and fantastic shot selection’ 9-0 9-5 9-6.
Although the score line might suggest that the final was one sided, it was far from that as the players became involved in numerous long and demanding rallies before Baker, who first won the title as a promising 20 year old player 30 years ago, understandably tired, leaving the victorious Crookenden triumphant and, at 18 years of age, the youngest ever club champion.
Although Baker lost the first game 9-0, he served no fewer than eight times but was not able to close a rally out as his young opponent retrieved every shot to take control, a control he never relinquished throughout the match. The second game continued in a similar vein as Crookenden led 4-0 and 8-2, before Baker’s
experience and sheer determination enabled him to pull the score back to 5-8, only for the youngster to regain the serve and close the game out 9-6.
The third game was full of non-stop action as Crookenden opened up a 6-1 lead but Baker fought back brilliantly to keep himself in contention at 4-6 and 6-7. By now the enthusiastic capacity crowd was willing the former champion on as they wanted a fourth game but at 76 Crookenden seized his chance winning the next two points to take the game 9-6 and the match 3-0

Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers were called into action when their pagers on 1 November to reports of up to 9 missing people, who were taking part in a run/walk along the coastal path between Cromer and Sea Palling. The Humber Coastguard called out both Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboats, Mundesley Independent Lifeboat and Mundesley and Happisburgh Coastguard teams for the search.
Happisburgh Atlantic ‘Douglas Paley’ was at sea by 6.06pm with Cubitt Siely at the helm and Cubitt Siely Jnr and Paul Hayter as crew. They were tasked to search north of Happisburgh towards Mundesley. At 6.12pm ‘Spirit of Berkhamsted’ our D-Class was at sea with Tim Grimmer at the helm and Jake Munday, Ross Scannell and Dave Cato as crew. They were tasked to search south from Happisbugh towards Sea Palling, beaching twice to check on people on the beach - both times they turned out to be fishermen.
The sea was moderate with a northerly wind and moonlight to see by, with mist that made the use of searchlights difficult as the light reflected back at the crew.

The two beaten semi-finalists were at opposite ends of the age scale. Twelve year old Alex Van Blerk, who defeated team captain Martin Sanville 3-2 in the quarter finals lost 5-9 3-9 39 to Baker whilst in the other half of the draw veteran Peter Arbuthnot went down 1-9 3-9 4-9 to Crookenden.
Starling said afterwards “I must have watched at least 30 finals during my time at the club and, whilst it is difficult to make comparisons, this was up there with the best ever. In his short time at the club Ed has shown himself to be passionate about the sport and I genuinely believe he is one of the most accomplished players we have had at Cromer for a long time.”

At 6.38pm Humber Coastguard stood down all the search teams, as all the missing people had been accounted for and Happisburgh Lifeboats returned to station and were recovered and made ready for service by 7.15pm.
Older People’s Day 2015
Fun and Finger Food were the words on everyone’s lips at Sheringham Community centre in October. Age was again proven to be just a number as everyone at Age Concern North Norfolk helped celebrate Older People’s Day. Activities, cake and song and dance were enjoyed by an attendance of nearly a 100 people, of various ages.
to see that a part of our society all too easily overlooked, and dismissed, had a voice of their own. All who attended were as strong and full of life, with a drive to succeed and determination to live life to the full, as they were (in some cases) 80 years previously putting many of the younger generations to shame (especially on the dance floor) and proving once again that age need not be a barrier to a happy later life when given the support, encouragement and understanding of their younger peers. A further aim of the event was to help highlight the isolation and loneliness that has been an increasing part of living longer and the ways in which we can, together, combat that. Our overall aim, ideally, would be to also reach those people from rural areas who could not otherwise access such events and local services. Organisations such as the Sheringham li-
The event was free to attend and there were information stands to help allow people access to, and have knowledge of, local services that can help them in later life. These stands included Ben’s Workforce, North Norfolk Community Transport, Age Concern North Norfolk Day Centre and the North Norfolk District Council’s Care and Repair Team. As well as this there was plenty of advice on hand in the form of The Older People’s Forum, Age UK Norfolk, a Community Support Officer from the Police and the Coordinator of the scheme Be Ready for It. A volunteer for North Norfolk Stories was also on hand to introduce, and to encourage contributors, to their Oral History project, which takes audio recordings of memories from people who have lived and worked in the area so they can put them towards an exhibition starting in the New Year.
brary and our Age Concern North Norfolk’s own Computer Support Group are two such schemes that aim to help lessen that isolation and general anxiety and they were both well attended during the event.
whether it be for a chat or just a nice cuppa. We are always on the lookout for New Volunteers (Much Needed) across the whole of North Norfolk to help reduce loneliness amongst the elderly and if you are interested in learning more then we would love to hear from you, please just call 01263 823126 for more information. As well as this there was gentle exercise with Mary Russell, of the Older People’s Forum, a local illustrator Eyizera Phoenix offering suport (and sweets) and even a chance for a hand or foot massage, which, not surprisingly, was extremely popular, with Erica, who also kindly signposted the session onto a local bereavement support group at the Salvation Army in Sheringham.
Age Concern North Norfolk would like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended, including the local organisations who came with their information stands as well as all the wonderful volunteers who helped make the teas and cakes and sold raffle tickets on the day. Over £100 was raised in various guises throughout for good causes.
If you would like to find out more about any of the above, including how to become a befriender please call Age Concern North Norfolk on 01263 823126
It was an inspiring event to be a part of and
Age Concern North Norfolk Befriending scheme, funded by the National Lottery, also had many requests for a volunteer to pay them, or a loved one, a visit. There was a lot of interest in volunteering as a befriender, where we arrange for a volunteer to visit an elderly person in their own home,

Celebrating Success
About with Friends are celebrating 18 months of success with their ‘Clubs with Friends’ programme. The programme has allowed young people between the ages of 13 and 25 to become involved with some mainstream clubs and work placements in their local area. Fourteen young people were successfully placed in provision suited to their own interests and supported to settle in, for example attending local youth clubs, bowling groups, social activities, work placements and more. Several others have since been signposted towards suitable provisions now the funding has finished.
About with Friends would like to say a special thank you to Wroxham Barns, who allowed a work placement to take place on the farm throughout the summer. This particular placement was a big success for a young man called Jai, who has ASD, learning difficulties and a special interest in animal care. His time on the farm allowed him to gain knowledge of how to care for the animals, as well as spending time interacting with staff and members of the public. The work place-

ment and support gave Jai a big confidence boost, and he fulfilled something he initially said he wouldn’t be able to do, because of his difficulties in many social situations.
Eileen Calverley, Junior Farm Manager at Wroxham Barns backed up the success of the service and added “We support About with Friends because of the difference it can make to young people’s lives. Animals are a wonderful therapy and provide joy and stimulation to a wide range of people. Jai always had a lovely smile and infectious giggle when he was here and we are glad to have given him the opportunity”.
The idea for this strand of work was initially thought up by the Young Commissioners, these are a group of young people that have a very positive influence on their own community. The group are involved with all aspects of services provided for young people in their area. Several ideas were presented at a meeting in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style format, and the ‘Clubs with Friends’ project was awarded funding from the Youth Advisory Board (YAB). About with Friends would also like to take this opportunity to thank the YAB and The Benjamin Foundation for the opportunity to carry out the work this funding allowed us to do.
standard on behalf of the Branch, seen here with SWO Roberts and Standard Bearer Raymond Loake.
The presentation took place in front of the 'Poppies in Steel' sculpture, a memorial commemorating the 100th anniversary of the First World War in the grounds of the NNDC offices on Holt Road, Cromer.
Chairman of the Council, Mrs Annie Claussen-Reynolds, attended the ceremony. The Branch is grateful to the Council for agreeing to our use of the location.
Jack Low Joins Cromer RNLI Launch
Jack Lowe has loved the RNLI since he was a little boy. He became a member of Storm Force, the charity’s club for children, at the age of eight – about the same time he picked up his first camera. Now, he is bringing his two passions together in a unique undertaking — The Lifeboat Station Project.
Jack plans to visit all 237 RNLI lifeboat stations in Britain and Ireland, photographing the view from each station along with the crew and Coxswain/Senior Helm using Wet Plate Collodion, a Victorian process that allows him to record stunning images on glass. The ambitious project is likely to take three to five years to complete. Jack, who lives in Newcastle upon Tyne, travels in 'Neena' — a decommissioned NHS ambulance purchased on eBay and converted into a mobile darkroom. He started the project on 17 January 2015 with a visit to Cromer and then returned in March to take some evocative prints of the crew and the coxswain John Davies. Jack has already documented all fifteen stations on the East Anglian coast. He says “The Project now enjoys an incredible extra dimension as everyone is so involved and engaged with it – the Coxswain and crew can step into the ambulance and watch a portrait of themselves developing. They are entranced, often rendered speechless and some-
times moved to tears!’
After attending the prelaunch briefing, Jack was kitted out in RNLI safety kit and boarded ‘Lester’, along with members of the volunteer crew. After approximately two hours, the boat was rehoused after undertaking several practise exercises with Jack taking a close interest. Jack said: “I was speechless as the crew allowed me to sit in the coxswains seat, a prime position to see the endless sea in front of me and my heart was racing as we launched down the slipway. It was such a humbling experience and made a dream come true. Cromer was the first to open its arms to the project and gave a kick start to it”
Jack then presented four prints to the station, which will be framed and take pride of place in the crew room, alongside other historic pictures of past crew. The prints were the first of each run, so have a special meaning for the station. Photos: Copyright Chris Gill – Shore Crew RNLI Cromer

Director of National Youth Choir of Great Britain works with Norfolk schoolchildren for a day of singing As part of a year-long partnership between Gresham’s School in Holt and the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain (NYCGB), about 220 school children from across Norfolk took part in a Singing Day led by the director of NYCGB, Ben Parry.
As well as leading the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, Ben is an international conductor, composer, singer and producer. He regularly records film soundtracks for Hollywood Blockbusters, plans to tour China with the National Youth Choir next year and is a former member of the Swingle Singers.
Ben Parry said, “North Norfolk has a great tradition of sending quality singers to join the National Youth Choir. Many alumni from these parts have flourished with us over the years and it's fantastic that we are helping to continue that tradition with this partnership with Gresham's. NYC strives to offer opportunities for all young children, regardless of financial and social backgrounds. Days like today are a really lovely way to show off what we do to a wider audience.”
Music Outreach Director at Gresham's, Tom Appleton who co-ordinated the day, said: “It's a real coup to be able to bring Ben to Holt. He is in high demand with choirs across the world. He has a great manner with young children, and I'm sure they have all gained a huge amount from their time with him!”
The schools that took part on the Singing Day were: Gresham's Prep, Beeston Hall School, Alderman Peel, Wells-next-the-Sea Primary School, Sculthorpe CEVA Primary School, Rudham Primary School, West Raynham CEVA Primary, Weasenham Church of England Primary School and Colkirk CE VA Primary School.
School children who took part in the Singing Day in Gresham’s Memorial Chapel with Ben Parry, director of NYCGB.
The sessions took place on 15 October at Gresham’s School chapel and involved music activities and workshops designed to enthuse and inspire young children of all musical backgrounds and levels. It was a huge success which culminated in a performance to parents and friends in the afternoon.
FROM FLANDERS TO THE TOWER by Richard Thomas
This presentation will take place on Saturday 28 November at 3pm at The Old Chapel, South Creake, NR21 9JF with Jennifer Thomas narrator, Stephen Miles tenor/reciter and Kathleen Wyatt piano.
It will tell the story behind the ceramic poppies in words, music and pictures. Devised by Jennifer and Stephen with a script by Richard Thomas, this presentation gives a special insight, not just into that wondrous display at the Tower of London to commemorate the start of the First World War, but also of life in the trenches and the dreadful wartime days that the poppy commemorates. This extended tapestry of images, poems and songs is incredibly moving.
Tickets £10, refreshments available. Booking through the Yorke Trust website www.yorketrust.org or 01328 823501

North Norfolk Photographic Society The 2015-2016 Season got into its stride for the North Norfolk Photographic Society on 7 October with the first set of club competitions. The rules have changed this year, and beginners or those with less confidence have the opportunity to enter their pictures in a ‘Novice’ section without intimidation from the more experienced and established members.
right and well known for his individual style of judging. It is admirable that judges are willing to travel to and from Holt to assess these photographs - Jim had a drive home to Peterborough after the meeting finished at around 10pm.
Meetings of Norfolk the North Photographic Society are held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month from 7.30 pm in the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the club Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com.
The first ever winner of the first ever Novice print contest was Rob Palethorpe whose wet stone footpath full of reflections and with just two walkers’ legs ‘Walking in the Rain’ was a deserving winner.
Advanced entries were in two competitions, the first having a set subject ‘Simplicity’. The winning print, ‘Simply Stilt’ by Paul Richards showed a solitary bird against a background that blended from yellow to very pale.
The second competition was ‘Open’ - no set title and was won by a vivid picture of a stunt motorcyclist at Cromer Carnival jumping through a hoop of fire. This was by Mike Coles.
The judge was Jim Hartje, a very successful photographer in his own
Earlier in October, North Norfolk Photographic Society held the first members’ competition of the season, for printed pictures, and a couple of weeks later on 21 October it was the turn of members’ digital projected images.
Rob Palethorpe had won the print contest in the Novice section, and he did it again with his ‘Pigeon Fancier‘ - a man feeding (and besieged by) pigeons in a public place.
The Advanced section was again in two parts. Firstly, the set subject which was ‘Close Up’. Judith Wells was the winner with her ‘King Eider’ - a beautiful photograph of the colourful head of the bird.
The Open Advanced competition oddly included a fair number of close up images and one of them, ‘Tree Frog’ by Hugh Barton was the winner - a spiral plant stem on which a tree frog sits, looking straight at the camera!
The judge on short notice was David Steel from Cambridge, who travels extensively from his home in Cambridge to give talks to Camera Clubs and to judge photo competitions.
Meetings of Norfolk the North Photographic Society are held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month from 7.30pm in the Holt Community Centre.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER JOBS FOR NOVEMBER
With the first signs of winter, there are jobs to be done before putting the garden to bed. We can enjoy the last days of autumn whilst planning for the winter and next spring.
LEAVES Only collect leaves where absolutely necessary. Don’t leave them too long on the lawn or they will kill the grass underneath but where they have fallen in the beds and have not drifted too deeply, leave the earthworms to pull them into their burrows or let the leaves rot on the surface. This is not laziness but necessary to return goodness to the earth. However, where leaves have drifted deeply or are smothering smaller plants or silver Mediterranean herbs and perennials, clear to keep the plants light and airy. Sweeping
leaves off paths and terraces is all you need to keep the garden looking cared for and covers up for untidiness in the rest of the garden.
tricts, tuberous - rooted cannas and dahlias should be dug up and stored in just-damp compost in a cool, airy place. In warmer areas, an ample mulch of compost or leaf mould should protect them and they can stay put.
PERENNIAL QUESTION If you are tidy-minded, it might be difficult to leave perennial plants standing, but wait for a few weeks and you will find that many will make fine winter skeletons and can be left until February or March. The plants will also form useful homes for hibernating insects and birds will appreciate the seeds.
LEAF MOULD If you have room, create a separate leaf heap rather than simply adding leaves to compost, as leaf mould is a luxury soil improver if you are growing lilies in pots. The fibrous nature of leaf mould retains moisture and enables free drainage, which means it also makes a fine mulch for woodland treasures such as trillium or wood anemone.
PLANTS TO ENJOY NOW
FROST Watch out for the first frosts. If you have not done so already, move tender plants into a cool greenhouse, frame or garage and water less to bring on a state of semi dormancy. In cold dis-
Tai Chi 8 Energies Seminar
Julian Wilde, senior instructor of the Norwich Fei-Yan Chen Taiji & Qigong School, recently held a seminar on The Eight Energies of Tai Chi at the Belvedere Centre in Norwich.
CUTTINGS This is a good time of the year to take hardwood cuttings. As soon as the leaves have fallen, take cuttings at pencil length and pencil thickness. Make a clean cut immediately below a bud and a sloping cut above to tell top from bottom. Plunge to half their depth in compost or a trench in open ground. Vines, cornus, willow, buddleia and fig will be rooted by spring and ready for potting by mid-summer.
Before winter finally arrives, enjoy the plants that are still giving us late colour in the garden, the colourful foliage of the trees and shrubs and their fruit and berries, which are so attractive to the birds.
Bob Wilkinson
The seminar was well-attended and enjoyed by students from classes in Aylsham, North Walsham and Norwich. All gained a deeper understanding of the eight energies, or properties of movements in Tai Chi which improve health, posture, rooting, co-ordination, balance and spacial awareness. ‘Movement and energy, both internally with the mind and externally with the body create a flow, seamless and tension free, where intentions ebb and flow without effort,’ Julian said.
Everyone worked hard to become ‘effortless’ - and left feeling relaxed and uplifted with a deeper knowledge of Tai Chi.

New Look a Norfolk “hero” Brand
Norfolk’s leading independent holiday cottage company unveils a fresh new look
Since 1992 Norfolk Country Cottages (NCC) has been established as the leading holiday cottage company in Norfolk. NCC was founded in 1992 by Richard and Lesley Ellis, who have since grown their portfolio of local holiday cottage companies across the UK. A genuine family business, their children Tom and James, and son-in-law Tom, have since joined the team. Under the guidance of General Manager, Heather McCraith, the last 22 years have seen continued growth, both in terms of bookings and their property portfolio – which now tops an impressive 440 throughout the county. However, just like a mum who’s children are flying the nest, NCC took a look in the mirror and realised they were starting to look a little tired, dated and lacking the va-va-voom of former years… time for a makeover! With this is mind, Heather secured the permanent services of Lucy Downing, an experienced marketing and brand professional with a strong track record in tourism. Her past roles include working as Brand Manager at Visit North Norfolk and Marketing Manager at the Jarrold Department Store.
After a tendering process, Norwich-based brand consultancy, The Click, was commis-
sioned to work on the rebranding project, having previously branded Norwich Cathedral, UEA’s Sportspark and the National Centre for Writing (to name but a few). The brief was to create a new look that would stand out from the competition and to ensure the new brand successfully translates across a multitude of marketing channels, whilst continuing to reflect the friendly, trusted and professional service Norfolk Country Cottages has established over the years. Heather McCraith, General Manager of Norfolk Country Cottages said “Refreshing the brand has been long overdue. It’s not simply the case of changing the logo. Rather like comfy old slippers, the outgoing look has served us well up to now and contributed enormously to the overall Norfolk Country Cottages reputation of providing exceptional customer service for home owners and holiday makers alike.”
“The new look stays true to our roots whilst adding a new dimension to our marketing and communication activity across traditional and new media channels”.
The Click’s Creative Director, Bobby Burrage, explains, “To achieve what we have with the new brand relied very much on the client being brave and willing to trust our recommendations. Considering the very traditional look Norfolk Country Cottages had, the new identity scheme is a bold and confident step forward – making a clear statement of intent. The new logo makes reference to the physical
structure of a cottage, an ’n’ for Norfolk and a doorway.” Lucy Downing, Brand Manager at NCC, adds “It’s an honour to develop a new look for such an established, trusted yet progressive company as Norfolk Country Cottages. I have relished working with Bobby at The Click, who has great vision and truly understands the importance of branding. Norfolk is a fabulous county that is beginning to attract the attention it deserves. It has amazing landscapes, rich wildlife, impressive heritage and culture and exceptional local food and drink. Our aim is to help people explore Norfolk properly, by offering them beautiful places to stay. Our new branding will help us to achieve this.”
The new brand ties in with the launch of a new website, and will roll out across brochures, advertising, social media and other exciting marketing ventures over the coming months.
Visit www.norfolkcottages.co.uk to experience the new look and for more information on the company.

Residential Landlord and Tenant Issues Changes to terminating an Assured Shorthold Tenancy by service of a Section 21 notice Written by Amanda Nulls - Solicitor with Hates + Storr
The Deregulation Act 2015 was passed in March this year covering various issues relating to residential landlords and tenants. From 1 October 2015, provisions will come into force protecting tenants from eviction which can have serious consequences for landlords.
not apply where the condition of the property or common parts is as a result of the tenant’s breach.
Landlords should be aware that although the new provisions require the tenant’s complaint to be in writing, they will still be taken into consideration where the tenant did not have the landlord’s contact details but made reasonable effort to contact the landlord. It follows that landlords should ensure that tenants have up to date information on how to contact them.
A ‘Section 21’ notice is required to be served on a tenant where a landlord wishes to bring the tenancy to an end. A landlord’s ability to terminate a tenancy this way will be restricted where a tenant has complained about the condition of the property or its common parts and where the landlord either failed to respond within 14 days, has not provided an adequate response or has responded by serving a Section 21 notice.
“This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice”.
These provisions will apply to any assured shorthold tenancy granted on or after 1 October 2015.
There are other new provisions relating to the way tenancy deposits are managed and changes to the content of Section 21 notices. If you wish to discuss these new provisions in more detail or discuss your own landlord/tenant issues please contact Amanda on 01328 825959. For advice on any other legal matter please telephone our Sheringham office on 01263 825959 or email law@hayes-storr.com.
If landlords fail to adequately respond the tenant will have the opportunity to complain to the Local Housing Authority. Not only is this likely to result in enforcement notices being served on the landlord by the local authority, but it will also prevent the landlord from serving a Section 21 notice within 6 months of the date of service of the enforcement notice. Of course, the provisions will

Norman Lamb speaks to Paston students about mental health
North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb says he wants Britain to be a world leader in providing care and support for those dealing with mental health issues. Speaking to students at Paston Sixth Form College in North Walsham, Mr Lamb said "It was great to have the opportunity to talk about the importance of investment in mental health services. It is brilliant that the students wanted to raise this. The moral and the economic case for investment in mental health is overwhelming. It is morally wrong and economically stupid to neglect mental health. It is estimated that mental ill health costs the economy up to £100bn a year. The impact on families is incalculable. I want this country to lead the world in understanding the importance of giving people speedy access to care and support and in accepting the case for equality for those suffering mental ill health." Winners Gelo
All the acts in the Grand Final had already been through the heats held across North Norfolk during the late summer, and the semi-finals held at Davenport's Magic Kingdom in October, so the high quality of all the performers was already known.
In the first half of the final all 10 acts were given three minutes to impress the judges, with compere Joe Ballard, from Arts North Norfolk, encouraging the judges to offer insightful com-
forming as GELO were given the M&A Partners trophy. Their performances ‘Bring Him Home’ from the musical Les Misérables and ‘Let it Go’ from the movie Frozen, really impressed the judges. They have been given an immediate opportunity by David Mackay, one of the judges, to perform in the show ‘The Elvis Years’ on 31 October showing the power of the talent competition.
Second prize went to Jack Goodacre who was accompanied on the night by Perry McCabe and Tim Goodacre. Jack was the youngest performer on the night and quickly grabbed the hearts of much of the audience with his performances.
Third prize was given to Olivia Watson, supported on the acoustic guitar by Rob Bindley. The judges commended Olivia for her perform-

deliver services both in-house and on behalf of external clients. Aiming to combine the best aspects of public sector practice with the efficiency and dynamism of the private sector, eastlaw has been particularly successful in acting as the legal arm of NNDC’s drive to bring empty homes back into use, in setting up the coastshare group to help charities and other not-for-profit organisations, and in generating income for the Council.
eastlaw’s innovative and agile approach has not only secured it position as a value for money, specialist legal service which is efficient, effective and highly regarded, it has been recognised nationally with a number of prestigious awards. More recently, the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPRA) has recognised eastlaw as offering exceptional value for money with a cost of £ 1.69* against an average of £5.30 making the team financially competitive in a group of comparable legal service providers.
Cllr. Judy Oliver, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Legal Services, said: “I’d like to offer my congratulations to eastlaw for being shortlisted for another two awards. It’s a fantastic achievement and recognition of the team’s excellent service to the Council and to other public sector partners. And, importantly, award-winning service is coupled with the team’s ability to offer great value for money. I wish them the very best of luck for both finals”.
Please come and support this traditional event, raising money for the Langham Church General Fund. Who will win the Christmas Hamper this year?

Landmark Supreme Court Decision on Divorce Settlements
By Neale Grearson, Head of Family Department at Clapham & Collinge Solicitors
The decision of the Supreme Court on 14th October in the case of Alison Sharland and Varsha Gohil has opened the floodgates for retrospective reassessments of divorce settlements. They have also highlighted the need for honesty in financial disclosure during divorce settlement negotiations.
Both Alison Sharland and Varsha Gohil felt that they had been badly treated by their ex-husbands who had not been honest with them and the Court in their financial dealings. Whilst no decisions were made about the eventual settlement that both women should receive the cases were sent back to the High Court for reviews of the settlements to take place and potentially far greater awards being made to both of them. The Court assumes that both parties in a divorce settlement will be honest and provide full details of their financial positions and assets. However there has always been a reluctance to reopen settlements concluded previously because of the need for certainty.
In the appeals of Alison Sharland and Varsha Gohil decisions were made on the facts of their particular situation. The Court was satisfied that their respective ex-husbands had misled them and the Court as to the financial position making the Court Order unsafe. The Courts have a wide discretion to determine what is fair in any particular divorce but this can only be based upon full financial information being provided that is reliable and accurate.
The Supreme Court decision is significant and could mean that many thousands of divorce settlements are reviewed and reopened. Whether
more generous settlements would be substituted depends upon the particular circumstances of each divorce where there is thought to be dishonesty or the misleading of the Court about the financial situation. At the very least this is a warning to husbands and wives that are going through a divorce that they should not mislead and must be honest in their financial dealings with full financial disclosure being given. If they do not they run the risk of any Court Order being overturned in the future.
The clear message for all those going through divorce is to be honest. Holding back financial information or trying to be selective is not going to work. Whilst in those two particular cases the Supreme Court has merely referred their settlements back to the High Court for a new decision to be made it is likely that they will be receiving substantially more than originally ordered and in addition their ex-husbands will be paying the substantial legal costs involved.
If you require advice on this matter, please contact Neale Grearson on 01603 693532 or email ng@clapham-collinge.co.uk. If you require advice on any other legal matter please contact Clapham & Collinge Solicitors on 01263 823398 or email info@clapham-collinge.co.uk

North Norfolk 618th out of 650 for Superfast Broadband
North Norfolk is ranked 618th out of the 650 Parliamentary Constituencies for Superfast Broadband according to new research. The area fares even worse for average download speeds; coming 621st out of 650.
Local MP, Norman Lamb says the figures show more needs to be done to reach rural areas with high speed
broadband. “Time and again, people in North Norfolk come to me with problems relating to internet access. Investment in high speed broadband is as essential to modern life as investment in roads and telephones. We need decent broadband coverage in the area to help small businesses but also to give parents access to educational resources for their children and people
who live in isolated areas access to friends and family,” says the MP.
“The coalition government and Norfolk County Council pledged funds to reach rural areas with fast broadband. I will keep pressing to ensure that North Norfolk is a priority for investment.”

Wells Christmas Tide Festival The clock is ticking down to one of the most eagerly anticipated events in north Norfolk’s seasonal calendar – the Wells Christmas Tide Festival.
Christmas Tide 2015 has been extended from the traditional three-day format into one that lasts more than a week, from Saturday 5 December to Sunday 13 December. The festival aims to ‘Light Wells up’ by involving The Buttlands, the town’s central green space, as well as the town’s quay and its main shopping street, Staithe Street.
Two large marquees will be erected for the duration of the festival, one hosting a Christmas market featuring stalls selling food, drink and gifts, and the other an entertainments stage. This year, visitors will be able to glide their way into the Christmas spirit by donning their blades on a skating rink which will be installed on the green for the first weekend of the event. Organisers have booked a host of musical acts and entertainers to appear on the entertainments stage at the north end of The Buttlands. Other attractions include
cookery demonstrations, children’s film screenings, a pantomime, evening carols, prize sbingo, a cocktail evening, a ‘Onesie Night’, brass bands, fire-eaters, stilt walkers, circus acts and a beer festival.
Numerous venues in the town have been earmarked to host the event programme, which is designed to make Wells a ‘must visit’ destination in the run up to Christmas. Festivities will commence with the traditional switching on of the town’s Christmas lights, which will take place outside Arthur Howell’s deli on Staithe Street at 5pm on 5 December. This year’s ceremony will be carried out by husband and wife David Whiteley and Amelia Reynolds of BBC Look East.
A competition will be held in the days running up to Christmas Tide in which you could win the chance to help the two presenters flick the big switch. After a week of events, the festival will culminate with the traditional arrival of Father Christmas by boat onto the Quay on Saturday 12 December, followed by a fireworks display over Wells Marshes. • There are still a limited number of stalls available for the Christmas Market on The Buttlands – interested traders should e-mail mel@wellschristmastidefestival.co.uk

THE NEARLY CHRISTMAS (BUT NOT QUITE YET) ORGAN SHOW!
Those lovers of live music who are regulars at the Briston Organ Shows will, no doubt, be getting their places booked for the last show of this year - the 'Nearly Christmas Organ Show' - well, not being able to get the dates we really wanted at the very busy Copeman Centre in December meant that we would need to bring it forward a bit, so Friday 27 November is the date for this night of music and mirth! This show will not feature one of the top UK organists as they usually do, but instead local organist and entertainer Mick Leary will be at the Hammond Organ and Yamaha keyboard, with able assistance from friends and a pupil or two. You will be able to hear loads of great music, tap your toes or sing along, chuckle at the somewhat saucy humour, and even get the latest local News Bulletin (which might even mention you!) As there is no top artist to pay this time, all the proceeds from the ticket sales will be donated to our selected charity - ORBIS. They have a flying eye hospital manned by volunteer pilots and medical staff, who not only perform sight-saving operations in remote parts of the world, but they also teach local doctors in these far flung parts to be able to do this surgery themselves, so the good work carries on even after the aircraft has left for new locations. Our show last year made an excess of £720 for this great cause - that is
enough to perform over 70 cataract operations for example, so the money goes a very long way in maintaining the wonderful gift of sight. You can find out more about them on their website www.orbis.org
Tickets for the show are available now at £6 each book yours by telephoning Carol on 01263 860844, and have your credit or debit card handy - it's that easy. The Copeman Centre at Briston is warm, has comfortable seating, wide level entrance that is ideal for disabled visitors, and loads of free parking right outside the door. SatNav users will find it at NR24 2LG. There will be scrumptious refreshments for sale, and the traditional Grand Raffle too. Do come and join us for this great night out, and know that you are really helping someone in a far off place to be able to see again. Thank you so much, and a Very Merry (but not quite yet) Christmas!
Norfolk artist donates one of his paintings to the East Anglian Children Hospice Love Art Appeal
Peter Herring of East Anglian Children's Hospice (EACH) recently visited North Walsham artist Jamie Cooper to pick up a painting for the charities Love Art appeal. The appeal is being run as a competition by EACH to promote and raise funds for the Nook, which is a support complex planned to be built in 5 acres of idyllic woodland near Framlingham Pigot, just south of Norwich. As well as the competition, EACH are asking local artists to donate artwork to the appeal. It was this call-to-action to which Jamie responded. The competition runs until 1 November and artists can find further information on the website at www.each.org.uk/the-nook/events/details/loveart-competition. Jamie Cooper opened his gallery/studio at Alby Craft Centre earlier this month. He said 'When I saw the appeal was running I thought that I had a painting I could spare. I have previously taken part in three dragon boat races to raise money for EACH and organised and submitted a team when I used to work at EAGIT Ltd. (East Anglian Group Industrial Training). It's a charity that seems to get things done and I am pleased to be able to help’.
Crayford & Abbs
The awards have recently been announced for Nissan Customer Quality Retailer, and local dealer Crayford & Abbs has come 2nd nationally, for delivering excellent customer service.
There are currently over 200 dealers and just three years since their inception, this is a tremendous accolade for all the Crayford & Abbs team, generated by their very loyal customers who ‘helped us win this award by completing their customer satisfaction questionnaire’s post sales purchase! In 2015 we will have sold over 300 new Nissan, whilst in the same period Nissan are enjoying a record year, helped by the award winning Nissan Qashqai and Juke, alongside the best-selling all electric Nissan Leaf, which from December 2015 has been fitted with a new 30kwh battery to extend its driving range to 155 miles, a 25% improvement over the 24kw unit. The car will go on sale in December 2015 with minor exterior changes and a new colour option’.

Twas the month before Christmas…
By Karen Smith, ‘Now Dash Away, Dash Away, Dash Away All !’ Chair, Aylsham Cittaslow Communtiy Events Committee (With apologies to Clement Clarke Moore 1779-1863!) ‘Twas the month before Christmas and all through the Town, Committees were planning and scurrying around! The lights were checked, each bulb with care And hung from the buildings around the square. The children all dreamed of the Switch On—so bright, Seeing Santa, the countdown and shouting for light! It’s the Late Night Opening and the streets all look great, Shop lights all a-twinkle for this Mid-Winter Fete. At St Michael’s School the children all stand With the lanterns they’ve made held tight in their hand. They parade to the square as fast as they can To await the arrival of a special old man. They look to the heavens for a silhouette of a sleigh, Pulled by eight little reindeer– Saint Nick’s on his way! ‘Where’s Dasher and Dancer?’ ‘Look its Prancer and Vixen!’ ‘Come on Comet and Cupid!’ ‘Fly, Donner and Blitzen!’ The crowd, too, grow restless and listen to hear The sound of the children as their voices draw near. At once, the bells from the Church ring out And the crowd come together with a ‘hurrah’ and a shout. For Father Christmas has arrived—his cheeks all aglow And his nose shiny red from the cold and the snow.
