Cromer Hospital receives £1m from Norfolk farmer’s legacy

Douglas de Bootman

The generosity of a Norfolk farmer is set to improve health services in North Norfolk after Cromer Hospital received one of its biggest ever donations.

The family of Douglas de Bootman have presented a cheque of more than £1m to the N&N Hospitals Charity after the retired farmer left the proceeds of his estate to Cromer Hospital in his will.

Mr de Bootman spent his life farming at Pentney, near Swaffham, before retiring and buying Church Farm in Thursford with his wife Janet.

After Janet died of cancer in 2010, Mr de Bootman continued to live in Thursford and spent much of his time looking after the grounds of his farm and discovered his love of painting. The 88-year-old died in March 2018 following a short illness.

His niece Karen Ballard, from King’s Lynn, said her uncle liked helping others and Mr de Bootman revealed to her a week before his death that

he was leaving his legacy to benefit Cromer Hospital.

“He was very active in his retirement up until three or four weeks before he died. He had quite a lot of land and used to get up early in the mornings and spent his time taking care of the grounds: cutting the grass, pruning the trees, chopping wood etc. He was very skilled at carpentry, welding, and agricultural engineering. He loved being outside with his Labrador and in his retirement took up painting, which it seems he had a natural skill.”

“He was such a quiet, sensitive gentleman. He and Janet enjoyed a few holidays in Scotland. My uncle liked a quiet life, in Thursford he had a few elderly neighbours who he liked to help and vice versa. We are happy that the money is going to the new cancer unit at Cromer Hospital as cancer affects so many people in many ways.”

The sale of Mr de Bootman’s estate has resulted in Cromer Hospital receiving £1,078,519.30

The Trust is currently working with Macmillan Cancer Support to create a state-of-the-art cancer care and support centre, which will increase

chemotherapy and treatment space at Cromer Hospital.

Louise Cook, Head of Fundraising for the N&N Hospitals Charity, said: “We are overwhelmed by this incredibly generous donation, which will make a significant difference to thousands of patients in North Norfolk.

Cancer manager Matt Keeling, Sister in Law Pat De Bootman, Niece Karen Ballard and Matron Anita Martins “Mr de Bootman’s legacy will undoubtedly help improve the facilities and services at the hospital and will be felt by patients, staff and visitors for many years to come.”

Mental Health Awareness The growing movement of Mental Health awareness has captivated the UK with employers and HR professionals championing the importance of having a good work life balance. Extra working hours, low wages and a need to increase earning capacity means that the balance of work and life can fall out of sync. As a result, the mental health of those employees is put in jeopardy. What signs can HR look out for in employees who may need help? People with unhealthy work life balances may feel unhappy about being at and devoting time to work. If your employees/ colleagues are showing signs of lack of motivation at work, distracted behaviour or seem unhappy at work, these may be signs that they need some help. Similarly, those who seem to worry about work at home, those who are not developing personally outside of work or seem to be neglecting other aspects of their lives in favour of work, could be struggling with an unhealthy work life balance. What can be done to help those with unhealthy work life balances? Head of Employment Law Nicola Strefford explains "Nurturing employees is the best way to ensure you are getting the best out of your workforce. Incorrect work life balance can affect productivity, absence figures and turnover for businesses so it's extremely important that employees are encouraged to have a correct work life balance and feel taken care of. We always advise clients to deal with issues sensitively as heavy intervention from employers can

negatively impact on an employee's mental health, causing problems to often get worse, not better."

Ways in which employers can help promote healthy work life balances, according to the Mental Health Foundation are: • Have policies in place which deal with stress at work and procedures which nurture all employees, especially those who may have mental health issues; • Promote an open-door policy across your business. Employees should feel able to speak to supervisors about time constraints and work load issues, without fear of being criticised or disciplined; • Assisting employees to utilise their time at work to ensure they aren't working longer hours in order to meet targets or work demands; • Provide training on work life balance to all staff; • Encourage activities which promote good mental health. Encouraging all staff to get fresh air on breaks; lunchtime exercise or relaxation classes. (The list above has been extracted from the Mental Health Foundation website) One of the main goals of promoting a work life balance for employers is assisting employees to utilise their time at work effectively. Employers should provide training on prioritising work tasks; structuring time at work and planning the working day; taking adequate breaks during the work day; making use of annual leave entitlements and using time at home to have a break from work.

Our specialist employment law team provide expert advice to both employers and employees on a full range of employment matters. If you need any help or guidance on offering training to employees or you feel there is an unhealthy culture of work life balance in your business, contact our specialist employment team on 01603 693500, email Enquiries@clapham-collinge.co.uk or visit www.clapham-collinge.co.uk. Help offered for East Anglia’s war memorials

Funds Raised for Wildlife Charity Civic reception success

North Norfolk District Council recently hosted a fun-filled civic reception in the spectacular location of Cley Visitor Centre.

Local developer Hopkins Homes invites further applications to the Hopkins War Memorial Fund as 140 of East Anglia’s memorials are found to be in a poor or very bad condition.

The fund-raising event was a huge success raising £2245 for the Chairman’s chosen charity of the year – Norfolk Wildlife Trust. During the evening an auction was held with some unusual lots, such as unique experiences including a ride in a Tiger Moth at Langham Airfield and pieces of art.

There are approximately 3,000 war memorials in East Anglia. From magnificent town memorials to simple airfield plaques, the region is dotted with reminders of its historical military connections. Whilst many are well cared for, recent research on War Memorials Online, a website which aims to record the condition of all war memorials in the UK, shows that 140 of these war memorials need extensive conservation work to preserve this vital link to the history of East Anglia.

Cllr Clive Stockton, North Norfolk District Council’s Chairman, said “I am absolutely overjoyed that the evening was informal, relaxed, with some 70 persons present and the auction itself raised such an exceptional amount.

The auction was carried out free of charge and therefore the total raised has been donated to my chosen charity. This will contribute to two strands of work being carried out by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust – the “Children and Nature” project and heritage grazing programme.

In November 2017 award-winning developer Hopkins Homes announced a £10,000 per year fund to support communities seeking to repair and conserve their memorials. So far, the fund, which is administered by War Memorials Trust, has provided grants for memorials in, amongst others, Huntingdon and Walsoken in Cambridgeshire; Sudbury, Beccles and Brandeston in Suffolk and Hanworth and Beeston next Mileham in Norfolk To date, the grants distributed have ranged from £600 to over £3,000.

The auction was only possible because of the most generous support of the 22 donors who gave such fantastic lots and I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to them and to the auction house who facilitated the event. ”

Grant application deadlines are three times a year, those interested in applying will be asked to complete a simple pre-application form to check eligibility. To find out more about War Memorials Trust and how to apply for a grant please visit www.warmemorials.org

The reception marks the commencement of a series of school and community events including tree-planting sessions taking place across the district with the aim of raising funds for Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s ‘Sure Start’ centres which focus on educating children and encouraging them to get in touch with nature.

War Memorials Online is seeking to create a greater understanding of the condition of war memorials across the UK. Visit the site to make sure your local memorial is listed - register to upload photographs and share condition details.

Sure Start centres are part of Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Children and Nature initiative. It creates wildlife-friendly areas outdoors where children can get involved with nature through wild walks and educational sessions.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER & WARD WARD SILVER SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2019? 20 19 ?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time fo or many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfo olk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2019 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 01263 0 1263 8 823465 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk

Nick adds Dame role to directing for milestone panto

Panto dame Sarah the Cook has a three-course role at a Norfolk seaside theatre as it marks a special milestone.

Sheringham Little Theatre has been staging its own in-house professional pantos for a decade.

putting on his frock and make-up in a return to the stage as the dame - as well as being director and writer – for the ‘Dick Whittington and His Cat’ show from 7th December to 1st January.

Nick was ugly sister Pearl in Cinderella back in 2009 and has since made Sheringham his second home with regular involvement in the venue’s panto and summer seasons, as actor and director.

“I am really excited and it’s a dream come true to be dame here,” said the 37-year-old self-confessed panto addict who has previously played the Sarah role at Sheffield.

Nick Earnshaw as dame Sara the Cook is tempted by the scones while getting some lessons from Little Theatre kitchen manager Pam Long

“As a child I obsessed with panto. I used to love watching them, but also taping Top of the Pops tunes and working out how to work them into a panto show,” he explained.

“When I was at drama school agents would be surprised when they were trying to get me Shakespeare roles, and I was asking about pantos.

And to celebrate, Nick Earnshaw, the man who has directed five of them, is

Nick Earnshaw who is dame, director and writer of Sheringham’s next panto Dick Whittington outside the Little Theatre

said: “Nick has been a popular and key member of the summer and panto teams so having him play the dame this year seemed a great way of marking our 10th anniversary. It should be great fun.”

Star comedy writer behind stage “radio” show

Radio Fun is a revue show of sketches, songs, “awful jokes and daft poems” done in the style of a live broadcast BBC radio show.

It is penned by a double act of renowned television writers, one of whom now lives in north Norfolk, who have created comic lines for stars ranging from Russ Abbott and Kenny Everett to Cannon and Ball and Frankie Howerd.

Paul Minett, from Aylsham, and Brian Leveson from Edgware met as advertising colleagues in London. They wrote comedy sketches for charity events as a hobby in the 1980s, before it became their profession.

Paul explained: “When I worked at EMI records my boss knew we wrote for fun and asked us to write the lyrics for a comedy mother in law song for Les Dawson, which never happened, but we did do a rock and roll one for Russ Abbot in 1981.”

That led to writing sketches too – for acts including The Two Ronnies, Brian

He added: “When I moved to Norfolk four years ago I wanted to get involved in amateur dramatics, having done it for 30 years in Kent, so I played dad Arthur in the Winslow Boy at Sheringham Little Theatre this year.

“Brian and I had already written our Radio Fun review show for charity in Orpington – so when there was talk of a show for the Little Theatre, we thought this would be ideal,” said Paul.

for anyone who loves a good laugh – and to have such a talented writing team behind it, combined with the cream of local actors, raising funds for the theatre has already put a big smile on our face.”

Tickets from the box office 01263 822347 or www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com.

The show, featuring music, sound effects and audience interaction, will be performed by a 16-strong cast from the Little Theatre Players, on 14 – 16 November at 7.30pm nightly.

affirming and uplifting mood to the music. I was determined to avoid any clichés of angelic harps or fires of hell, and chose to take a more human and earthly approach something more akin to the Requiems of the middle ages and Renaissance. Much of the writing is in the manner of Gregorian chant, with numerous melodic ‘threads’ woven together into a rich tapestry of sound. The solo cello became a vital part of the music from some of the earliest drafts, providing a counterpoint of light against dark. Whenever the choir are singing about loss or sorrow, the cello sings a song of hope and comfort." The late Sir Neville Mariner said of the work "a valuable addition to 21st century choral repertoire". Other works on the programme will be Joseph Haydn Insanae et Vanae Curae, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Missa Brevis in Bflat K.275, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Ave Verum Corpus and Gabriel Fauré Cantique de Jean Racine.

The concert will be conducted by the Society’s musical director, David Ballard with soloists Zaira Palumbo, soprano; Graham Northwood; counter-tenor, Simon Mulligan, tenor and Andrew Weeks, bass plus organist, Philip Adams.

Revised Plans for Holt Railway Station

writing!). The top half will arrive, be repaired and then be erected onto a new concrete foundation.

Back in 2015 a group was established at the request of the Board to examine how the Holt site should be developed to complete the original vision of a country goods yard first planned way back in 2004.

The design was presented to the Feb 2017 Members’ Forum at The Links and was well received; however, the price tag was expected to be in the region of £3m or so including all the surrounding street works. Back then there was a realistic prospect of obtaining a majority grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund given its museum and educational purpose. However, all that changed in 2018 when the HLF changed their policy on grants and ceased to make large sums available. This led the Board to reappraise what we can do and at the meeting in September they approved a ‘bronze’ scheme for Holt rather than the original ‘gold’ scheme.

So, what exactly is ‘bronze’? It is a scheme that delivers virtually the same output for visitors as the original big scheme but not inside a large B&Q style shed, so it can be built incrementally as funds are available.

The original scheme would have required a significant lump of cash even to erect the basic building as there are many competing demands on the railway’s finances!

Eventually it will become a “have a go” simulator where visitors can try their hand at signalling. This will then be joined by a range of other buildings and we are scouring the county for abandoned pw huts that we could dismantle and move to Holt and re-erect next to the box. So, over a period of time the yard area will be filled by a range of buildings that allows us to demonstrate all the aspects of railway working. There will need to be a new buffet building and replacement for the institute and the railway cottage will move down from the gate. (This in turn will eventually allow the buffer stops of the headshunt to be pushed back towards to road to give us a longer platform 2). Regrettably this has meant that we have not been able to renew the model engineer’s lease that falls due in January and they have to find a new home.

We are also planning to build a superior children’s play area in 2020 between the turntable and the goods shed.

And finally, the turntable – the Board took the decision to decline the offer from another railway to buy it and are looking at installation in the corner of the field behind the water tower subject to a land agreement. This is

very much work in progress but is at least moving ahead at last.

Wine tasting and tasting menu night

The Grove invite you to an evening of tastings from our new winter menu, co-hosted by Jason Banner of vintners Peter Graham Wines, who will be taking you through the subtleties of five wines paired with our tasting menu based on up and coming dishes at The Grove. Jason has been working in the wine industry for 29 years and is hugely knowledgeable of flavours and varieties.

Peter Graham Wines started trading out of a 15th century shop in Norwich’s historic Elm Hill and have built their company on good business sense and good ethics. We only deal with producers who share our ethics, and who run squeaky-clean, consistent operations. In poorer countries we always check, to the best of our ability, that vineyard workers are fairly treated and housed. We look for wineries which respect the vines and interfere with nature as little as possible. We generally ship full containers to minimise environmental impact. £70 per person, includes the

and 11 children selected for the Norfolk Schools Athletics Association, amongst many others.

Gail Emms with the young people whom attended the event

North Norfolk District Council launched Year Four of its Sporting Centre of Excellence initiative, hosting an evening of speakers including Badminton Olympic medallist Gail Emms at Gresham’s School, Holt.

The aim of the initiative is to encourage children with a talent for sport to get involved and to take advantage of specialist coaching provided and the excellent facilities at Gresham’s School.

Now entering its fourth year, the sessions have produced many sporting achievers, including three winners at the County Championships

Emms gave a moving speech and later said of the event “I was so thrilled to be able to speak to these children and their families about the joys of getting involved in sport. I truly hope to encourage and inspire young people to take advantage of the amazing opportunities on offer here which I could have only dreamed of when I was starting out. Not only is it important to be physically active for our health, but it’s exciting that those with real talent can progress and succeed if they want to.”

Marc Bradford, whose daughter is currently taking part in the programme, said “My daughter has been attending the endurance running training due to an invitation after her achievements over the last year in numerous school

and district competitions. We found the all the speakers entertaining, interesting, inspirational and relatable and left the evening with a broad smile and thinking about how lucky we are to have the chance to receive such top level training.

A massive thank you from both of us, to all of you who have been involved in setting up this training program and for hosting such an insightful evening”.

How can we maintain optimal skin health? Skin is our body’s first line of defense against the elements such as sun, wind, heat, smoking and pollution etc. On top of all these assaults our intrinsic or genetic ageing does not help. Whilst we cannot stop the ageing process, we can reset the clock back with the help of our treatments.

What is the Coltishall Clinic pyramid approach to skin health maintenance and restoration? This is summarized below: In a nutshell you start at the base and progress up the pyramid if and when required. Of course if you have already had some sun damage, acne scarring or skin sagging and/or volume loss you can add higherlevel treatments at the start.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station

North Norfolk Astronomy Society Introductory Astronomy Course

Missing Girl between Walcott and Ostend

Happisburgh volunteers were called into action last month to help with a search for a girl missing around the Walcott area.

Howard Bell and Russell Pickering

The North Norfolk Astronomy Society will be holding its popular Introductory Astronomy Course at Binham Village Hall Starting 21 February 2020. The course will be held on four successive Friday evenings and will cover subjects such as the night sky, the Moon, space exploration and telescopes.

HM Coastguard paged the crew at 9pm to help with the search; Mundesley Lifeboat, the Police and Bacton Coastguard were already searching when we were called.

The course is aimed at absolute beginners and those with a little knowledge of astronomy. Places cost £26 per adult and £8 per child (accompanied by an adult).

Anyone interested can access an application form from the North Norfolk Astronomy Society website (www.nnas.org) where they will also find further details of the course, and directions to the venue.

By 9:10pm Howard Bell was on the water with Tim Grimmer on helm and Martin Gibbs and Chris Rigsby as crew, tasked to do a coast line search up the towards Walcott. HM Coastguard then tasked Russell Pickering with Jake Munday on helm and Sean Thurston as crew, to recover two Police officers who had been searching the beach towards Happisburgh and found themselves cut off by the tide.

Hedgehog Haven On Monday 14 October baby hoglet Thimble arrived at only 20 gms, less than 2 weeks old with eyes still closed. I had to start by syringe feeding him approximately every two to three hours.

Howard Bell was soon informed that the girl had been found cold and wet and she had walked off the beach. Russell Pickering soon arrived where the police officers were and worked their way through the old revetments to the beach, picked up the officers and tranfered them to Howard Bell to be taken to Walcott ramp. They were then transferred back to Russell Pickering to be put ashore. Both boats returned to Station and were rehoused and made ready for service by 10:30pm

Now, 2 weeks on, his eyes are open and his teeth are coming through so he now has one feed in the morning and one at night. It is much too late for hoglets being born so he is a very lucky hoglet to be found.

Exciting news! Charlies Helpline for Hedgehogs has been set up. If you find a hedgehog in trouble or want advice about one, you can ring 07835 498970 and your nearest carer will be contacted, so please make a note of this number. Thank you.

On 13 October Happisburgh’s Chairman attended The Justice Service in Norwich Cathedral at the invitation of Lady Agnew, High Sheriff of Norfolk.

A Superstar Patient!

Meet Lily! This gorgeous girl is a regular visitor to Toll Barn Vets as she suffers from the relatively rare Addison’s disease and requires regular check ups.

It was at one of these regular appointments when her owner mentioned that Lily’s abdomen appeared more swollen than normal. Our veterinary surgeon examined Lily and confirmed that her abdomen had become full of fluid. This can happen for a number of reasons including heart disease, infection, liver disease and tumours and so the decision was made to admit Lily to our hospital so we could fully investigate the cause of the fluid accumulation.

Luckily for Lily the Toll Barn Vets on-site facilities meant she could relax in our hospital whilst we performed

blood tests in our in-house Laboratory, and ultrasound scans of her heart and abdomen in our diagnostic imaging suite. These tests ruled out many of the causes of fluid accumulation but were unable to diagnose the problem. Our team then performed a CT scan using our state-of-the-art on-site CT Scanner and this revealed that poor Lily was suffering from a liver lobe torsion – a disease where one of the liver lobes twists around itself cutting off the blood flow to the affected liver lobe. Knowing this can be a lifethreatening emergency, the Toll Barn Vets team performed life-saving surgery that same evening to remove the affected liver lobe and prevent further tissue necrosis (tissue death) and toxin release.

owner and our team has beaten all the odds and made a full recovery. Always remember that as an owner you know your pet better than anyone and even a small change could be a sign of a significant problem, so if in any doubt contact your vet to discuss your concerns and hopefully keep your pet fit and healthy.

Patients suffering from liver lobe torsions are at high risk of blood clotting disorders, toxin release and changes to blood pressure and heart rhythm (arrhythmias) and the Toll Barn Vets dedicated nursing team used specialist monitoring equipment throughout her surgery and recovery. Lily has been a superstar patient and thanks to the swift actions of her

Ground-breaking ceremony for new Sheringham Leisure Centre Significant milestone as building work begins

The ground has officially been broken to mark the beginning of construction work to build a multi-million-pound leisure centre in Sheringham, expected to be completed in summer 2021.

North Norfolk District Councillors joined staff from Metnor Construction and Everyone Active to celebrate the major milestone in the development that will see the existing 31-year old ‘Splash’ replaced with a state of the art facility with lots of new features.

The new centre will include a six-lane, 25-metre pool, a 13-metre learner pool with an adjustable depth floor, fitness suite, community rooms, multipurpose studios, a spin studio and a café. The design has been progressed with the facility’s accessibility in mind and incorporates eleven dedicated accessible car parking spaces close to the building entrance, level access into the building through the main

reception, automatic entry doors within the lobby area and accessible changing rooms.

On the ground floor, a dedicated ‘Changing Places’ facility will be provided which offers more space than standard accessible changing spaces and equipment including a height adjustable changing bench and a hoist. A ‘pool pod’, a type of swimming pool lift, will be available for safe and dignified entry into the swimming pool, offering greater independence for people with a wide range of mobility difficulties.

Reepham Life 2020 Calendar now on sale

Between 18 and 20 October Thorpe Market Church held a successful fundraising exhibition and auction of postcardsized original artwork, donated by professional and amateur artists from across Norfolk and beyond.

The Reepham Life 2020 Calendar is now on sale at retail outlets in Reepham or by mail order.

Produced in association with the Reepham Archive and featuring 13 photographs capturing the town’s history over the past century, the calendar also includes modern-day images of each scene.

A number of valuable artworks were donated including a handful of work by budding artists from Happisburgh School.

With thanks to the generosity of all the artists submitting, we raised a total amount of £1125.80 towards the cost of new exhibition facilities for the church. A fantastic achievement! We would also like to thank the many volunteers who helped hang the exhibition, bake cakes and invigilate over the three days. Much fun was had by all those who took part, bidding on multiple items or outbidding each other for firm favourites.

Published by Reepham Community Press, the calendar costs £8 and can be purchased from Johnson’s Newsagents, Bircham Centre Charity Shop, Reepham Archive, Robertson’s Family Butchers and St Mary’s Reepham.

To order by post, send a cheque for £9.50 (UK only, includes postage and packaging) made out to ‘Reepham Community Press’, Homerton House, 74 Cawston Road, Reepham, Norfolk NR10 4LT. Airmailed copies to Europe cost £12 (incl. p&p); rest of the world £13 (incl. p&p). Calendars from 2014–2019 are also available.

We still have lots of beautiful postcards remaining so have decided to exhibit them during our popular Snowdrop Sunday events in February 2020 for a flat rate to purchase on the day and take home. We would welcome NEW postcard submissions from artists who wish to take part for the February 2020 exhibition. The same terms apply, as long as the artwork is 6by4 inches we accept any 2 or 3 dimensional medium and any theme, whether it is figurative, abstract or conceptual. Sculptural pieces can be exhibited on plinths.

This project from the publishers of the Reepham Life community website has involved sifting through hundreds of old photographs and postcards supplied to the Reepham Archive by past and present residents or those with a connection to the town.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS will be 31 January 2020. If you missed out the first time this is your chance to showcase your works of art and have them purchased by collectors. The funds raised will benefit all local artists wishing to use the exhibition facilities at the church.

A total of 12 pictures as well as a cover image were chosen for this sixth annual calendar, most from the first half of the 20th century. Local photographer John Tym then went out to capture many of these scenes as they are today.

Up to three postcards can be posted to Katayoun Dowlatshahi, Coach House Barn, North Walsham Road, Northrepps, Norfolk, NR27 9LF. Please ensure your full name is on the BACK of the postcard with your contact details. For further information please email katayounpd@gmail.com

Medieval Marriage

Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr ‘The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there’; so said L P Hartley as the opening lines of his novel ‘The Go-Between’.

I recently heard a presentation which included a run-through of English marriage and divorce laws through the ages. It amused me; and thought it might amuse you. It is truly alien territory. In the early 7th century, under the code of Ethelbert, the legal penalty, if a man ‘took a maiden by force’, was that he had to pay her guardian (not her) 50 shillings (i.e. £2.50 in decimal money), and afterwards he could buy from the guardian his consent to marry her. Presumably the former-maiden’s value would have been much diminished and it would have been an easy solution for the men. The cost of consent would be 20 shillings (£1) if she was betrothed to another man. We do not know the cost if she wasn’t betrothed. There was a 35 shilling (£1.75) refund if the woman was ‘returned’.

The Welsh laws of the same era stated that the grounds for divorce were leprosy, impotence and bad breath (only one of the three was necessary). There was recognition too of the ‘seven year itch’. On divorce after seven years the money in the marriage was split equally.

Before the 7 years the division depended on the woman’s status by birth (regardless of the actual size of the common pool of matrimonial property). This presumably meant it was financially risky for a man to marry a posh but poor young woman – much better for him to find a rich but vulgar girl!

Before the arrival of the Normans, if a woman found her husband with another woman, she was entitled to payment of six score pence (about 46p, I calculate) the first time; £1 the second time; and, on the third time she was entitled to divorce him. If a husband kept a concubine, his wife was allowed to punch her. After the Norman invasion things got worse.

Under the French invaders, a wife became a ‘sort of infant’ and her legal identity ceased to exist. A husband and wife on marriage became one person and the wife’s property was surrendered to the husband. This included her clothes; and so, the husband would usually give his wife her clothes by his Will; otherwise, presumably, if he died, she would quite literally walk away naked. Many of Jane Austen’s novels turn on the importance of marriage to save the family fortunes. Land and real property passed down the male blood-line, so

that a widow and daughters would be left destitute without a living male protector. This explains Mrs Bennet’s desperation to hunt down husbands for her five daughters in ‘Pride and Prejudice’. True love didn’t come into it.

And so the matrimonial property dark ages continued until the Victorians introduced the Married Women’s Property Acts. There were four of these from 1870 to 1907 and the final one, shockingly, was as late as 1964. Women became legal entities in their own right, could keep their earnings and own property.
