1940s Weekend

Visitors came in droves to be part of this year’s 1940’s weekend, organised by North Norfolk Railway.

There were many sights to see. In Sheringham, there were many period shop fronts and displays on the High Street. Memorably, Roy Boy’s Cafe could be seen with a bomb sticking out of its roof, and a Nazi Messerschmitt fighter plane could be seen protruding in a similar manner at Blyth & Wright. Newspapers and other materials from the period were available to read in some displays and the Lobster was outfitted with a Dad’s Army themed shopfront. People from the past of all kinds could be seen strolling about Sheringham during the weekend - sailors, nurses, gangsters, and all kinds of soldiers and civilians. Several musician groups, such as the Sheringham Salvation Army Band and American Tan, could be heard throughout the town. 1940’s vehicles could be seen everywhere - some commissioned to appear by North Norfolk Railway, others brought in by enthusiastic supporters of the event.

4 | north norfolk post | october 2015

The weather was fantastic for both days and enabled the yearly spectacle of the Spitfire to fly over the towns safely and in plain sight. New this year, was North Norfolk Railway’s decision to expand the event and the share the weekend with Holt. This has proved to be successful because attendance was the best it has ever been for the event, with bed and breakfast establishments full to bursting and Sheringham High Street almost unrecognisable with bustle. The crowds stretched all the way to the seafront where spectators could hear the sounds of WWII gun placements, which fired every few hours.

Chief Organiser of the event, Chrissie Rayment of North Norfolk Railway, called it the most exciting 1940s event yet, and wishes to thank Graham Deans from the Lobster for organising the road closures, as well as everyone across the towns that got involved to make it such a memorable weekend.

Chocolate Fondant

Autumn is sometimes seen as a slightly depressing season as the nights get longer and the days become shorter, but we absolutely love it here at the Grove. We always look forward to launching our Autumn Menu an emphasis on delicious garden produce, succulent game and meats from Cromer's very own master butcher Icarus Hines - and of course this is the perfect period for the odd indulgent dessert here and there.

This lovely chocolate fondant makes a guest appearance on various party menus throughout the year, and it's a rewarding and fairly straightforward dish to make at home. So treat yourself with a little bit of chocolate magic in front of your roaring fire - and don't forget to come and see us for the Autumn Menu from 12th October!

Ingredients 5 eggs 3 egg yolks 150g caster sugar 250g unsalted butter 300g plain cooking chocolate 70g plain flour 1 vanilla pod

NO LONGER A WOMENS ONLY CLUB - LASER AND COSMETIC TREATMENTS FOR MEN

A recent study at Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic has shown that a third of our patients are now men. We offer a range of medical treatments unlike a lot of purely cosmetic clinics.

Men can be just as concerned about their looks as women and how society views them. It has seemed the norm for a long time for men to accept that they cannot change things. Not anymore, the trend is that more men are coming for a variety of treatments and enjoying the benefits. Men want to remain youthful and often want to keep up with their partners (who are often the people who introduce them to these treatments or bring them along to appointments!)

Here at Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic we understand that men don’t want to give up their masculinity. Dr Gheyi helps to navigate patients through the numerous treatments we offer and to give you the look that you wish to achieve. The effects of ageing can be reversed and a new physique can be attained, which could not be achieved even with exercise and a healthy diet.

The most popular treatments among men are photo rejuvenation for conditions such as rosacea, thread veins on the face and pigmentation issues. Botox and filler treatments have also seen an increase in popularity. With the introduction of minimally invasive surgical treatments we see men having their varicose veins removed and having liposuction for body contouring. All our invasive treatments are performed purely under local anaesthesia on a walk-in walk-out basis so there is no worry about general anaesthesia and hospitalisation issues.

Here is a selection of our treatments for menAcne or acne scarring [chemical peels, microdermabrasion, IPL, Lasers] Fractional co2 laser resurfacing Shaving bumps, moles, warts and verrucae removal Unwanted hair on face, back, chest, legs etc. Rosacea Pigmentation/ broken veins on face Thread and spider veins Frown lines, crow’s feet & wrinkles Ageing face, volume replacement, nose to mouth lines etc. Age spots, sun spots and liver spots Radiofrequency skin tightening Ultrasound body contouring Liposuction for face, neck, chin, jowls, man boobs, love handles and many body areas Face and neck Lift Hair loss treatments Varicose veins Laser treatment If you are interested in finding out more about our treatments please log onto www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call us on 0800 0430737 or 01603 736487.

Shared Service Discussions Underway

Initial discussions are underway to look at sharing opportunities between North Norfolk District Council and Great Yarmouth Borough Council.

Leader of North Norfolk District Council Cllr Tom FitzPatrick and Leader of Great Yarmouth Borough Council Cllr Graham Plant have discussed the opportunity for the two authorities to consider sharing senior management and some back office services.

The focus will be on bringing elected members together across both authorities to discuss the idea in principle and to consider how it may help to deliver better value for money services for council taxpayers.

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick said “These exploratory discussions are at a very early stage and we owe it to our taxpayers to explore every opportunity to deliver costeffective and efficient services. Shared services has the potential to deliver better value for money to our council tax payers.

“It is part of North Norfolk District Council’s business strategy, and forms part of the government’s national policy position for local government.

“Over the coming months Elected Members across the political spectrums at both Councils will be involved in considering the options, understanding the benefits and risks before any conclusions can be reached or decisions taken.

“The discussions are at an early stage and it’s very much a case of business as usual while councilors consider the next steps.”

NO/WHERE Fringe Festival

The third Fringe Festival for North Walsham returns at the end of October with some spooky offerings for the town.

The Fringe events kick off with a community talk and discussion ‘Is North Walsham really No Where?’. The discussion is based on the format of the first in the series, which proved a popular and forward-thinking move, which was presented as part of the town’s main Festival in June. Crude Apache theatre company will be bringing their musical comedy take on the life of Alan Smethurst, the Singing Postman, on the Wednesday evening. The show is presented in partnership with the Fringe and COAST.

A free drop-in workshop for children and their families will take place on the Thursday morning at No. 1 – where everyone can get involved with Halloween arts and crafts. By the evening, No. 1 will be transformed into an informal music venue ready for the NW UnPlugged night which showcases local talent and acoustic music.

The Infamous Covert Cabaret will entertain audiences on the Friday evening, in the setting of a cabaret lounge of bygone days with illusion, comedy, dance, song and a mystical spirit cabinet act. Old songs will swoon from the bitter Ivanna More and the spontaneous Hans Hoffyer will compere the night.

On Halloween itself, the Fringe presents ghost walks around the historic town centre. Walks begin at 4pm, 7pm, 9pm and 11.30pm with the later

the scarier precedent in mind and the 4pm will be suitable for children, where fancy dress is encouraged. Local stories, folklore and touch of history will feature in the walks. Participants must meet at No. 1, where they will be serving hot drinks before and after to keep everyone warm. The Fringe, organised by Arts North Norfolk, is working in partnership with COAST Festival this year to bring the Singing the Postman show, North Norfolk’s Got Talent and a photography competition which will be exhibited in the Atrium Gallery. Joseph Ballard, Director of Arts North Norfolk and the Fringe said “We’re really excited about this year’s NO/WHERE Fringe, especially after the success of the main town festival in June. It is also great to be working with COAST on a few projects to bring different experiences to North Norfolk. Halloween is a great time to explore the darker side of things and I’m proud to present the ghost walks as part of this year’s programme.”

For tickets and further event listings pop into Arts North Norfolk at No. 1 Market place, call 01692 218060 or book online. More information about other local events and classes can be found at www.artsnorthnorfolk.org.

It is a cold winter night as the committee gathers in the chilly village hall to tackle the agenda for next summer’s extravaganza. As protocol gives way to bickering and gossip, the personalities of those present emerge. First on the scene is Ethel, the village shopkeeper and fount of local knowledge and gossip. As the members gather we meet the vicar, Geoffrey and Pauline, his long-suffering wife, careworn Gloria who lives with her elderly mother, horsey Marjorie, who is very attentive to the shy new teacher, Angela, elderly Mavis with her knitting and timely nuggets of wisdom and Sally, the brisk Army wife whose husband seems to be busy with more than military manoeuvres. The lengthy meeting seems unlikely to resolve the complicated arrangements for next summer’s village fete, but six months on, the day of the annual extravaganza has arrived and the cathartic events that follow are related with humour and pathos, with the

Roughton WI

Our September meeting celebrated the Centenary of the WI and six of our members dressed in clothing from the 1900s and 1960s. Mal Franks, Jackie Hawes and Geraldine Tedeschi looked wonderful in their ‘turn of the century’ outfits finished, of course, with the all-important accessories of a hat and gloves. Barbara Baker, Edna Abbs and Barbara Mayes arrived in their own 1960s finery, and many memories were stirred up for all of us (the pale tights, short skirts, big sunglasses, etc). It was interesting to note that even in the 60s a hat and gloves more often than not completed the outfit, although no longer de rigeur. The rest of us, in our trousers, jeans, skirts and tops represented the ‘laid back noughties’!! We also welcomed Alex Hurrell, local reporter, who spoke about her 31 years in journalism, giving us an insight into the ‘news behind the news’. A nostalgic evening and a chance to celebrate both 100 glorious years of the WI, as well as Her Majesty the Queen becoming the longest reigning monarch in British history.

Our October meeting Speaker will be Kindra Jones who will talk about ‘Life Beyond the Home Front: Women at War’. Visitors are most welcome.

Please note, our Pamper Evening on 18 November will be held at Cromer Parish Hall (opposite Boots), with a number of beauty specialists giving ‘hands on taster sessions’ of massage, Reiki, hopi candles and more. Chairman’s Civic Reception raises money for local charities

A charity evening, hosted by North Norfolk District Council Chairman, Cllr. Annie Claussen-Reynolds has raised £1368 for local charities, The Wensum Centre and The Benjamin Foundation.

The Chairman’s Civic Reception ‘Auction of Promises’ took place at the historic Maltings, a 19th century building, in the heart of Wells-next-theSea.

Over 100 people attended the charity event and generously supported the auction hosted by BBC Radio Norfolk presenter, Nick Conrad. Twenty two lots went up for grabs including tennis coaching, chocolates, parties, holidays, meals, vouchers, art, days out, flowers, crockery, a vintage handbag, a massage, hampers, cake and a supply of horse manure! Guests included Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Norfolk, Mr Nigel Savory and the High Sheriff of Norfolk, Nick Pratt Esq.

Cllr. Annie Claussen-Reynolds, NNDC Chairman, said “I want to thank everyone who gave so generously, either by donating lots for the auction or by taking part and to Wells Maltings for providing a great venue. The donations will help the charities I have committed to supporting as Chairman, The Wensum Centre and The Benjamin Foundation”. Rosemary Ditchman, Chair of Trustees of the Wensum Centre, said "It is easy to think of Mental Health in north Norfolk being the Cinderella service but Annie's awareness and inspiring Reception prove that she and others really do care. We will use the money raised for us towards equipment for our new premises. We thank Annie and all the donors involved.”

Chris Elliott, The Benjamin Foundation’s Marketing and Fundraising Manager, said “The funds raised mean we can continue to provide our help to children, families and young people in north Norfolk and elsewhere in the county. This money helps us provide the extras that other funding doesn't, for example we recently gave children who care for a family member a day out at Pleasurewood Hills.”

The summer is sadly over and autumn is fast approaching! That can only mean one thing… . Christmas is not far away! Tesco are already stocking their Christmas chocolates and M&S have their biscuit range out already! We are launching a Christmas Card Competition! http://www.matthewproject.org/christmas-card-competition/

We would love anyone, yes anyone, to participate and enter a design, photo, drawing etc into one of our five categories and be in with a chance of having their design chosen, showcased, awarded and printed on the front of a card which we will sell.

The Youth Team exists to support The Matthew Project charitable and contracted services, both adult & young people as well as create innovative ways of engaging and supporting children and young people under 25 years old in Norfolk & Suffolk. This small initiative will help support us to continue doing this! Thank you in advance for your help! Time to get creative!

Anita Gagen Young People's Substance Misuse Worker

On 31 October, lifelong Norfolk resident Fred Corbett is embarking on a Malaysian expedition to raise money for the Ellen Mezzetti Memorial Fund and Classrooms in the Clouds.

Ellen was in her last year at Cromer High School when she died suddenly from an epileptic seizure. Since then her family and friends, led by her mum Lynn and dad John, have been raising money in her memory for Epilepsy Research UK.

Two years ago when Fred was trekking through the Himalayas, he was captivated by the quiet strength and warm hospitality of the Nepalese people. Classrooms in the Clouds is a small charity funding schooling in remote mountain areas, where some children walk for up to three hours to attend school. After the devastating earthquakes earlier this year, their work is even more vital.

Fred, a local cabinetmaker will be flying to the island of Borneo where he will be trekking through the rainforest, camping in local villages and staying in small lodges. He will also be visiting animal sanctuaries, including the renowned Orangutan rehabilitation centre at Sepilok. The climax of the trek will be climbing Mount Kilabalu at over 4,000 metres, South-East Asia's highest peak, then white water rafting the Kiulu river. In preparation for this challenge Fred, a hapkido black belt at Ellen's fathers Fighting Fit gym, has been regularly attending fitness classes and walking long distances on Norfolk foot paths, totalling over 150 miles so far.

Fred is funding the entire trip himself, so all the money raised will be split equally between the two very worthwhile charities. In order to donate, please visit https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/fredcorbett1 or pop in to FFMA gym at Louden Road, Cromer.

Cromer Academy staff praised at awards event

Staff from a Cromer school were praised at a county-wide awards ceremony last month. Teachers and staff from Inspiration Trust schools across Norfolk and Suffolk came together to share ideas and celebrate colleagues and two staff from Cromer Academy were presented with awards recognising their contribution to school life, in front of around 800 staff from the Trust's 11 schools.

Penny Gee and Michelle Gibson received awards recognising their contribution to life at the school, presented by principal Dr Geoff Baker and Trust Chairman Sir Theodore Agnew. The event heard about Cromer Academy’s impressive GCSE results, with 62% of students receiving five or more GCSEs at A*-C, including English and Maths.

Their achievements matched the school’s record results, and marked Cromer out as one of the few north Norfolk schools to improve its results.

Staff at the event also heard from Sir Theodore of his passion for education, particularly for helping those from disadvantaged backgrounds to succeed.

Chief executive Dame Rachel de Souza gave an overview of the last 12 months, and also set out the Trust's plans for the next three years.

The day rounded off with a chance for staff to meet and swap ideas with colleagues from schools across the Trust, both in subject and year group meetings.

Dame Rachel said "We had a fantastic day and it has been tremendous to recognise the great work that goes on all through the Trust, as well as welcome some new colleagues. Since joining the Trust, Cromer Academy has continued to improve, and we are delighted to be investing to improve the school site so that it better reflects the excellent work of the staff, students, and parents.”

Bumper summer for Pier of the Year! Louise Ellis

What a year it has been for Cromer Pier so far – winner of Pier of the Year 2015 and ‘theatre’ category finalist in the Norfolk Arts Awards, it is bucking the trend where other seaside pier theatres struggle. The famous Cromer Pier Show is now the ONLY ‘End of the Pier’ show in Europe and shows no sign of bowing into the shadows. For the second year running the show has received 5 star reviews from industry papers, bloggers and local press. It has even been hailed by Bradley Walsh, who starred in the show in the early 80’s, as “a ‘must see’ show that should be on everyone’s bucket list”. Sales are continuing to climb, with a 14% increase in 2014, compared to 2013, and this year sales have increased by a further 10%. The sum-

mer in general has proved to be a bumper year for the Pier:

• 31,095 tickets sold for the summer show • 2,442 Summer Show Souvenir Programmes sold • 90,891 video views of summer show promo videos on Facebook, reaching 165,084 users • Just over 23,000 Whippy Ice Creams sold over the summer months • Approx. 7,000 Ronaldo Ice Cream Tubs sold to audiences who attended the summer show • Nearly 3,000 crabbing buckets sold so far this year – each family has one bucket between them, so we’ve had approx 12,000 visitors crabbing off Cromer Pier so far this year! The staff at Cromer Pier are very proud of being

Home Visits 07710 435123 Fully Insured host to the only ‘end of the pier’ show in Europe – this is with reference to the fact that the show is in-house produced and it runs for a full three months. The team believe the success is not only down to the quality of the production but also the marketing has become more targeted and focussed on promoting the quality and heritage of the show, as well as more engagement with group visits. “Cromer and North Norfolk are increasingly becoming desirable places to holiday, so we are tapping into that as well”, says Jo Artherton, Marketing & Commercial Development Manager, “We now have strong links with local tourism groups so we benefit greatly from crosspromotion in any marketing activity they do regarding the area. The Pier, in general, is an iconic landmark for the North Norfolk coast so our focus is not just advertising the show but advertising the pier as a whole. Nostalgia is also a good reason for our continued success – audiences view the pier and the show as a reminder of traditional British holidays, before it became fashionable to holiday abroad – good old fashioned, cheeky, seaside entertainment. Our humour as well is reminiscent of the old classics that never fail to bring laughter, such as Morecambe and Wise, slapstick comedy and audience participation.

Norman Lamb MP recieves petition opposing Barclays’ Stalham Branch Closure

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has received a 600 name petition objecting to the closure of Barclays Bank in Stalham.

cash machine in the town.

“I will keep the pressure on. It is just so important that our market towns continue to thrive and an essential part of that is for local people to be able to find all the services they need on the high street,” said Mr Lamb. Petition organiser, Diana Cornell, said 'I have written to the CEO of Barclays, John MacFarlane, with a personal letter stating the case for keeping a bank in Stalham. He has received a copy of the petition too. I have invited him to come to Stalham and see the importance of a bank especially in this town. Stalham is the hub of the Happing area, surrounded by thousands of local people in isolated villages with no Post Offices or ways to access cash. This is a disaster for many people, a number of whom signed the petition in villages such as Potter Heigham, Sea Palling, Sutton, Hickling, Catfield and Ingham as well as Stalham.'

The MP has pledged to continue efforts to ensure banking customers are adequately provided for, despite Barclays insisting they will go ahead with the planned closure. “It is incredibly frustrating that Barclays has taken this approach. I understand that the way many customers do their banking has changed over recent years, but there are wider issues to consider here. Stalham is a market town that serves many local villages. Businesses in the town need somewhere to bank their takings and they benefit from people coming to visit their bank in the high street,” says Mr Lamb.

The Royal Bank of Scotland (which owns Nat West) has told Norman Lamb that it will be providing a mobile service when its branch closes in the town, and it has also reached an agreement with the Post Office that will allow its customers to use Post Office facilities to check balances and make deposits. Barclays say that they are looking for a location that could be used as the site for a

Paston Sixth Form College Awards Evening 2015 Kevin Grieve welcomed over 200 students and their parents to a packed St Nicholas Church, North Walsham on the evening of Thursday 10 September. He told the audience “It had been a brilliant year for the College with the students achieving some of our best ever A level and BTEC results.” In his address, Kevin thanked all the teaching, support staff, students and parents for their hard work over the last two years. He was particularly pleased with a 98% A level pass rate and a 100% pass rate on BTEC courses. The results at A level included an incredible A*-B pass rate of 49% and an A*-C rate of 75%.In BTEC 67% of the students achieved high grades with many students achieving triple star distinction level.

“It is not surprising that over 250 students are going to University after A level and BTEC courses, with over 15% going on to top Russell Group Universities and a record 6 students gaining places to Oxford and Cambridge. All over the country Universities will be receiving some talented people from Norfolk” said the Principal. He also celebrated the number of students going straight in to employment and apprenticeships. He

said “many have been highly ambitious and secured some fantastic opportunities in a range of industries such as retailing, finance, I.T, engineering and science. He spoke about how the Futures Event held at the College in July, which attracted over 20 Universities, including Oxford, Warwick, Southampton and UEA and over 40 different employers from the region, had inspired students to be ambitious with their career choices.

The guest speaker Mark Bruhin founder and Managing Director of Beacon East had been instrumental in organising the Futures event. Mark spoke to students about their career paths and making the right choices. He gave tips to students on meeting the challenges of the work places, particularly with the pace of changing technology. He then presented the certificates and prizes to all the students including over 90 Norfolk County Scholars. These students had achieved ABB grades or better at A level and distinctions on their BTEC courses. Students enjoyed the citations from teachers who explained the reasons for the awards. Special prizes included the Ivan Palfry Cup presented to

Yasmin Mantell by Ted Gadsden for the Rotary Club and also the Kristopher Harper prize to Ciara Simpson for outstanding academic achievement during their first year of study. The Paston Sportsperson of the year was awarded to Danni Garwood “Once again the Awards Evening has been a brilliant success” said Kevin Grieve.

NORTH WALSHAM’S CHIPPY IN TOP FOUR The THREE COTTAGES FISH RESTAURANT received the news earlier this summer that in this year’s competition to find the best 50 Fish and Chip Shops in the United Kingdom theywere one of only four shops to receive a mark of 100% from the independent judges. Having been judged a top 50 shop last year, owners, Paula, David and Sam, are really proud that the extra effort put in by all the staff to ensure every customer receives great food and great service has led to this fantastic award.

The annual competition, which is run by Fry Magazine, entails an unannounced secret visit by an independent judge who marks each shop on the quality of their food and the service received. Over 50 different aspects of the food and customer service are marked to help, compare shops throughout the UK.

Norman Lamb unveils plaque commemorating Sam Peel North Norfolk Norman Lamb unveiled the plaque to Sam Peel on Saturday 26 September at Wells-next-the-Sea.

The plaque is sited on the town’s Quaker Meeting House and was hand-made by a local pottery.

The words on the

plaque read “A man of faith whose campaigns for social justice transformed the lives of many.” One time warden of the Meeting House, Sam Peel and his wife Annie arrived in Wells in 1909 where they found major social problems such as slum housing, poor sanitation, inadequate health care, bad education, low wages especially for agricultural workers and excessive drinking. His legacy included new housing, primary & secondary schools, library, telephone and electricity services. Becoming a County Councillor and then Chairman of Norfolk CC Education Committee Sam worked to improve educational provision throughout Norfolk.

Over 60 family relatives spanning four generations, friends and others gathered at the Meeting House to honour his legacy and many walked the new Sam Peel trail around the town. Sam’s granddaughter, Sue Wild (author of the book, “Sam Peel A Man Who Did Different”) led the celebrations.

North Norfolk Photographic Society That talented doctor from Aylsham visited North Norfolk Photographic Society again on 16 September. Kevin Elsby showed photographs that he took when he and his wife visited Peru.

He went, of course, to pursue his passion for natural history in general and birds in particular, and only incidentally as a special trip to celebrate a special wedding anniversary.

Kevin showed pictures of vultures, parrots and hummingbirds to name only a few families of birds, and spider monkeys and fungi among many other kinds of fauna and flora. His complicated itinerary included a trip up a tributary of the Amazon by canoe through extraordinary scenery The climax, perhaps, was a bit of a surprise. Clearly feeling that members might be saturated with wildlife photographs, Dr Elsby presented a series of breath-taking views of Machu Picchu, the amazing World Heritage site which Kevin and his wife included on their tour. It is quite easily reached by railway these days, though that is followed by a very energetic walk up the mountain. The sight of the railway far, far below the old city gave a vivid illustration of the labour it must have been to construct the buildings, bringing the stone to do so from many miles away and many metres below.

Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month from 7.30 pm in Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the club Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com

The WEVA’s have been established for over 40 years and became independent in 2008 after the seaside village of Walcott was severely flooded and again in December 2013.

Chairman of WEVA, Paul Woolston, said “WEVA have been involved with helping local residents when flooding occurs and they have ‘watched out’ day and night when the Walcott coastline has been threatened with extremely high tides and flooding, with the objective of reassuring the residents and getting them to safety if they have to evacuate their homes”. Mr Woolston’s father was part of the team who set up the Flood Warden Service over 40 years ago. WEVA Secretary, Sylvia Andrews said “The response was amazing and all the artists gave their performance freely and we had a lot of support from local businesses and individuals who donated money and prizes for the raffle and auction and a big thank you goes out to them all for their support”.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER HOPS IN FIELDS AND GARDENS

When we think of hops it is probably beer and hop fields that spring to mind but it is also an appealing and useful garden plant. The traditional hop field, a forest of poles the height of three men, supporting a cat’s-cradle of wires, is an extraordinary scene with no parallels in English agriculture. It is hard to imagine the landscape in the main growing areas of Kent, Sussex, Hertfordshire and Worcestershire at the peak of hop growing in the 1870s, when nearly 72,000 acres were under cultivation. The hop is a native wild plant of hedgerows and scrub but it was not until Flemish weavers settling in the weald of Kent in the 1520s introduced new varieties of hops together with cultivation and brewing techniques that hop growing developed.

At the beginning of September the aromatic cones of the female plant are ripe for picking. Many hands were needed and it became traditional for families from London’s East End, gypsies, itinerant workers and local residents to spend three to four weeks ‘hopping’ in Kent and Sussex. The hoppers were badly paid and provided with little in the way of shelter. Dermatitis

sometimes results from harvesting hops and although few cases required medical treatment, an estimated 3% of the workers suffered some type of skin lesions on the face, hands and legs. Hops are also toxic to dogs!

At first hops were used because they prolonged the life of beer but their alpha acids also impart bitterness and their volatile oils give flavour and aroma. Each variety has unique qualities that give beers their range of tastes.

By 2003 the acreage of hops in the UK had fallen to 3,600 acres on only 95 farms. Today hops are more likely to be seen in gardens with their highly coloured, golden or attractively variegated foliage trained over a fence or trellis or into a large shrub or small tree. The flowers/hops are useful for dried flower arrangements or you can consider brewing your own beer. Hop plants are hardy perennials and should be grown in the garden in moist but well drained, moderately fertile soil in sun or partial shade.

To grow this plant sow seed at 15-18 degrees centigrade in spring, it is also possible to take cuttings. Hops are subject to Verticillium wilt.

Hops are therefore well worth growing, for covering fences or trellises, for dried flower arranging and for brewing your own beer and if that is not enough hops are used in herbal medicine in a way similar to valerian, as a treatment for anxiety, restlessness and insomnia. A pillow filled with hops is a popular folk remedy for sleeplessness. It is believed that a hop pillow cured the insomnia suffered by King George III. Bob Wilkinson

P&S Autos

The basic variety is Humulus lupulus a rampant climber with oppositely held, green, lobed leaves on bristly stems. Rather coarse for the garden, but it may be of use in wilder areas for covering unattractive structures. The forms with coloured leaves are those most often seen, such as ‘Aurea’ which has fine golden foliage that is especially eye-catching in spring. Both male and female plants are in cultivation; the male is more commonly grown but the female is more desirable with its attractive flower heads in summer. Other varieties to look for include ‘Diva’, ‘Prima Donna’ and ‘Taff’s Variegated’.

Kettlestone Barn Conversions Win North Norfolk District Blank Council’s Graham Allen Award for Conservation and Design Cllr Sue Arnold, Cabinet Member for Planning said “The level of interest and interaction was extremely pleasing with the award attracting over a thousand votes. It would seem the very concept of design and heritage in North Norfolk is close to people’s heart and never fails to stimulate debate.”

Kettlestone

The North Norfolk District Council Graham Allen Award has been won by Manor Farm Barns, The Street, Kettlestone.

The People’s Choice Award was won by the restoration and conversion of the Grade II Listed primary school and former field study centre, The Old School, Polka Road, in Wells

The barns, which lie on the entranceway to the village, had been lying derelict and were in an extremely poor state of repair. The project involved the complete restoration and refurbishment of the barn complex into four new dwellings.

The scheme has been extremely successful in bringing this historic group of derelict barns back into use. The sympathetic use of traditional materials and detailing has meant the character and original charm of the barns has been retained.

The Graham Allen Awards 2015 has also seen the introduction of the People’s Choice Award where people at Greenbuild were invited to vote for their favourite shortlisted development.

No 1 The Croft, Cromer NR27 9EH 01263 512512

&

Letheringsett

which also took the Highly Commended Award.

The primary school built in 1838 was purchased by Homes for Wells and converted into ten affordable dwellings earmarked for keyworkers and local families within the town. The project involved adapting a listed building for a new use while maintaining its original character.

The scheme has been extremely successful in providing important affordable housing to meet the needs of the local community, whilst positively repairing and securing the long-term conservation of an important heritage asset.

The complete restoration and conversion of one of the District’s Buildings at Risk The Old Maltings, Holt Road, Letheringsett was Commended - this project has saved three Grade II Listed Buildings which were on the brink of collapse.

The Old Maltings has now been fully restored, providing eight new bespoke dwellings. The project has found a sustainable new use of the site and should be noted for the quality of the workmanship and endeavour shown by the owners in such challenging circumstances.

The awards were presented at North Norfolk District Council’s offices last month by Edward Allen, the eldest son of the late Graham Allen who was the first chairman of North Norfolk District Council.

Shantymen 25th Anniversary Gig – Cromer Pier Pavilion 6 November

Ce le

During 2015 the Shantymen have been celebrating their 25th anniversary, having started in 1990. This year, as well as the other forty odd gigs in their programme they also planned to do three very special gigs, two in Sheringham and the last one at the Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre on 6 November.

Musical Director Brian Farrow said This will be our final celebratory gig of 2015 and we are really looking forward to it. To make it really special we have asked Keith Skipper if he will join us for the show. We have always admired Keith’s work and he will bring his own unique taste of Norfolk to this show, which we have called ‘The Silver Darlings’.

They are still planning the show details but Secretary Dick Grieve added, “We propose to tell the story of the road we have travelled over the last twenty five years and include a few well-placed anecdotes from our resident comedians and I know Keith will add his own splendid blend of humour The Shantymen are keen to demonstrate their thanks to the people of Norfolk who have supported them over the last twenty five years and have come up with a novel way to show that.

Norfolk Strays is ran by a small team of dedicated volunteers. To find out more about their work or to make a donation please contact norfolkstraydogs@gmail.com or visit their Facebook page Norfolk Strays needing urgent rescue spaces.

The food was donated to Norfolk Strays, a local organisation dedicated to saving dogs who find themselves in the dog pound. Without them, after seven days, dogs remaining unclaimed would sadly be put to sleep. Over the past eighteen months they have saved over 200 dogs, who are now happily living in new homes and Animal Magic are delighted to

Coastal Arts

Since starting in 2010, the annual COAST Arts Festival has been celebrating the variety and quality of art produced in the Cromer and Sheringham area; creating a vision to share – giving local communities and visitors the opportunity to experience local, regional and national creativity.

COAST incorporates a wide range of art forms including: painting, sculpture, dance, theatre, literature, film, poetry, music, photography, installations, workshops & many other diverse events. Over 40 events are run each festival. The 2015 festival across the October half term (23-31 October 2015) contains the usual eclectic mix of events and exhibitions such as: • performing arts: circus workshops; african dance and music ; talent competition (#nngt) • 2D art: photography competition; art exhibitions (eg Sam Thomas); art workshops • 3D art: sea art exhibition; ceramic workshops; contemporary glass • storytelling: african storytelling in 4 libraries; selkies and fishermen stories • literature: a literary lunch; katrina mountfort on her experiences of getting published; Lynne Truss • other: a history day; a celebration of walking

This year we are very excited to welcome the best selling author Lynne Truss to Coast; in the middle of the week she will set the standard for others to follow.

#NNGT is the new talent show for North Norfolk; heats have run throughout September, with semi-finals in October and the Grand Final in the famous Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre in festival week. As well as offering people in North Norfolk the chance to aspire to bigger things, the competition will give them the real opportunity to be noticed by people who can help them realise their dreams.

Alzheimer's Charity Afternoon Tea

Kathryn & Rebecca Lake and friend Becca Horne recently organized a charity tea and homemade cake afternoon for the Alzheimer's charity.

The girls have grandparents suffering from this disease

and felt they would like to do something to help the charity, so they organized the afternoon at Skeyton Village Hall last month.

They were all overwhelmed by the amount of people that turned up and have raised over £600 for the charity.

National Award for North Walsham Business

A North Walsham based business with 20 years’ service this year, has won a national award for excellence in Computer Retail.

Increase of Inheritance Tax allowance to £1 million where home inherited by descendants Written by Mirana Marshall - Director at Hates + Storr “A family home is likely to remain the primary asset for many middle-income taxpayers. Fortunately there are new provisions in the Finance Bill 2015 that provide significant potential benefits to tax-payers leaving their home to descendants.” So says the Government’s preamble to the Finance Bill 2015. It must, of course, be passed by Parliament in order to become law. The small print is far from straight-forward and this is not the universal panacea that it might first seem.

The Finance Bill 2015 inserts a new section into the Inheritance Act 1984. It will provide an extra Nil Rate Band if the home passes to descendants. It will apply only to deaths after 6th April 2017. The effect should eventually be to increase the Nil Rate Band for a home-owning married couple (or civil partners) to £1,000,000.

The relief will start to take effect in April 2017. It will be phased in, starting with an additional £100,000 in 2017, £125,000 in 2018, £150,000 in 2019 and then the final £175,000 in 2020. The ordinary Nil Rate Band of £325,000 will remain frozen until April 2021.

The home must pass to a direct descendant of the deceased, which includes step-children but not unmarried partners who lived at the property with the deceased. Any unused band will be transferable to a spouse or civil partner. There is tapered withdrawal of the new band for estates valued at more than £2,000,000.

To avoid those who sell their homes, to downsize or to move into care or to live with relatives, being treated unfairly, it is proposed that legislation will be included in the 2016 Finance Bill to extend this relief where the deceased downsized or ceased to own a residence on or after 8th July 2015.

mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice”.

If you require advice on this matter please contact Miranda on 01328 710210. If you require advice on any other legal matter please telephone our Sheringham office on 01263 825959 or email law.sheringham@hayesstorr.com.

The provisions do not come into effect until 6th April 2017 and so it remains necessary to consider other options for effective succession tax-planning for the family home in the interim. As ever, it is important to take specialist qualified advice.

Students lend the Hospice a Helping Hand

Students lend the Hospice a helping hand The sun was shining as a group of 13 students got stuck in to removing unwanted plants at the entrance of The Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House in Hillington.

Mark Shea, Commercial Director at The Norfolk Hospice said, “The students did a fantastic job and we really do appreciate them selecting us as their chosen charity. It would be impossible for the Hospice to continue to help the people it does without the active involvement of enthusiastic volunteers like these. They have made a real difference to the grounds around the Hospice and they seemed to really enjoy themselves too”. The Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House offer a variety of volunteering opportunities available to individuals and groups of all ages. If you would like get involved please contact Davina (Volunteer Co-ordinator) on 01485 601700.

The students each dedicated 30 hours of volunteering as part of the National Citizen Service (NCS), which helps 16 and 17 years olds develop personal and social skills, ready for the world of work. The students selected The Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House as their chosen charity, as one of the students had known someone who received support from the Hospice.

Council launches Community Leisure Hub in Erpingham

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is pleased to announce the launch of a ‘Community Leisure Hub’ in Erpingham, the second of its kind in north Norfolk.

The Community Leisure Hub will be selfsustainable and will be run by a voluntary committee from the participants of the classes. It will offer Walking Football (at the Multi Use Games Area) and Pilates (in the Village Hall). The launch of the hub follows on from the Council’s ‘Sports Clubs and Hubs’ project which started in January 2015 to help more local people get in to sport with a variety of different activities specifically designed for the over 50s.

The project, which was designed in response to local demand, was made possible thanks to £211,512 of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Community Sport Activation Fund.

Classes ranging from Belly Dancing to Badminton have been offered at community hubs across the District.

The Council is delighted that the hub at Erpingham follows on from the success of the Fit and Active Hub in Holt where volunteers have taken the lead and steps to provide sustainable sports activity programmes for the community.

Cllr. Becky Palmer, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services said “I am delighted to

Links Golf Club 40's Competition

The 1940’s returned to the Links Golf Club with members dressing up for a special fun competition - our take on the 40's weekend's being held on the North Norfolk Railway at Sheringham and Holt. There were some great 1940’s styles on show, along with some fantastic golf. The players were only allowed to use three clubs and a putter and the winner was Chris Kime with an impressive 39 Stableford points. Although Chris wasn’t wearing full 1940’s clothing he got into the spirit of the times with a Dad’s Army t-shirt. In second place was Kevin Bonnett looking the part in plus fours and a waistcoat and in third was Talbot Field with 34 points.

Club Captain Tim McCrohon using a hickory putter with other members who got into the spirit of the 40's.

see that the Council’s Sports and Hubs project is enabling local people to take on the running of sporting activities within their own communities. The creation of the hubs aims to bring local people together and to increase participation in sports in rural areas by making it easier to get involved and get active.”

Holding the Cromer Line

The Holding the Cromer Line event held on 18 September was a great success and well supported. Described as a ‘1940's cinema experience’, an array of beautifully-attired guests sipped cocktails and enjoyed the fabulous 40s-style singing of The Dotty Duo, before watching a classic wartimethemed film at the town’s Regal Movieplex, whilst munching on sweet "rations". The Street Fair was equally successful, with charity stalls run by Sheringham & Cromer Rotary Club, About With Friends and Halsey House, alongside vintage stands selling sweets, bric-a-brac and accessories attracting lots of visitors.

‘Even a sudden downpour just before the end of the afternoon didn't dampen the spirits of our guests, who all remained in high spirits despite slightly soggy hats and furs - a great time was had by all!’

A raffle was held in support of About With Friends and Halsey House, but unfortunately two of the winning tickets had a name but no contact details on them so if Helen Mitchel and Molly Galler are reading this, you have won a bottle of wine and a box of chocolates respectively! Please contact Sheila Parish on 01263 479719 to arrange to collect your prizes. Photos by Andreas Yiasimi
