Blakeney Rowing Club makes a Splash

Once again, on 8 September, the Crabbers were well represented at The Great River Race on the Thames; both skiffs were involved. This is an international event and, this year, 320 crews were taking part in a race which is always full of colour and excitement. The competition over the occasionally turbulent waters was hard and keen. However, the crew of Hoi Larntan completed the twenty-two miles in a very creditable time of just over three hours with the Bluejacket rowers coming in twenty minutes later. It was an exhausting but thoroughly enjoyable day. Many thanks must go to organisers and boat transporters who contributed so much time and effort. See some great action pictures on crablakeney.wordpress.com.

It has been a hectic and enjoyable few weeks for your local rowing club.

Apart from the usual outings involving experienced and newer rowers, there have been some major events. The first of these took place on the morning of 1 September and it was the second Wells to Blakeney row. Our two skiffs – Hoi Larntan and Bluejacket – Richard Hughes were ably crewed along the channel from Wells, into the open water around the Point, accompanied by a flotilla of kayaks and canoes. It was a great morning on the water. Many thanks to Why not come along and try skiff rowing? You may sample three rows before deciding whether towing the skiffs to the starting point. to join and no previous experience is necessary. Coaching is always on offer. If The two skiffs barely had time to get dry before they were wheeled out for the Blakeney Regatta race the following day. This eagerly anticipated event was a real battle on the water as two well matched crews strove hard to gain advantage. It was the closest and most exciting race seen for many years. Hoi Larntan made it first over the line with every member of the crew pulling hard. Well done to all concerned!

Councillor Phil Harris said “We know local community groups are always looking at ways of raising money and we are trying to help them achieve this in a fun way.”

To help on the day we would ask any community group wanting to take part to provide a couple of stewards.

Sam from The Old Rock Shop Bistro who are sponsoring the event said “More people than ever If a local business or organisation wants to help are taking up running and this local event provides sponsor the event please contact Cromer Town the opportunity for runners of all abilities to join in Council. with their families & friends to raise money for any charity or non-profit organisation close to Time to Spare? their heart.” North Norfolk Community Transport is currently looking for people with a few hours to spare who can offer their services as volunteer drivers.

Volunteers Needed!

We are a local charitable organisation that provides a door to door service to hundreds of North Norfolk residents who do not have easy access to other forms of transport. Typically our members will use the service to travel from the outlying villages into such destinations as North Walsham, Cromer, Sheringham, Holt, Wroxham and Stalham to shop and run errands. Many of our passengers also enjoy the social aspect of the journey as they can catch up with neighbours and also meet new people. We are particularly proud of our drivers who are friendly reliable and always happy to ‘go the extra mile’ and help with the shopping bags.

In addition to our regular Dial a Ride trips we also run excursions to local places of interest such as garden centres, Wroxham Barns, Norwich and Great Yarmouth. Most of our drivers are volunteers. They are from of variety of backgrounds with differing past experience. The thing that they do have in common is that all find the role rewarding and enjoyable at the same time.

If you have category D1 on your licence, enjoy driving, have a few hours to spare each week and would like to join us in providing this vital service then please call Carl or Steven on 01692 500840 or alternatively e-mail carl@nnct.org.uk

As well as helping the environment, using one of these cups can quickly pay for itself. Many coffee outlets, for example, give a discount to customers who provide their own reusable cups.

Smart new cups help the environment – and can save money too. Smart, reusable, environmentally-friendly cups are now on sale in North Norfolk – and they should prove a popular choice for people who want to do their bit to save the planet.

Reducing SUP use is particularly important in North Norfolk. No district in England has more Blue Flag beaches, and helping to reduce the amount of SUP can only help the district’s beaches and the marine life in the sea.

The cups have been produced as part of North Norfolk District Council’s #whatSUP campaign – a push to slash the use of single-use plastic (SUP) in North Norfolk and beyond.

Broadland celebrates the completion of 16 new homes in North Norfolk village of Bodham

Broadland Housing was delighted to be able to celebrate the completion of 16 new homes in the North Norfolk village of Bodham earlier this month.

This is the second phase of the development, the last being completed over 10 years ago.

This new scheme is a mixed tenure Exception Housing Scheme which has provided 16 high quality homes. The development includes seven affordable homes to rent and three which have been sold on a shared ownership basis, providing an affordable step onto the home ownership ladder.

All the affordable homes are prioritised for households with local connections through residence,

This year we are also having a raffle; proceeds from this and the event will go towards The Priscilla Bacon Lodge support group. We aim to raise over ÂŁ1,000.

The cups are available for ÂŁ5 from the North Norfolk Information Centre in Cromer. family and employment to households with a connection to Bodham and its adjoining parishes of Baconsthorpe, Hempstead, High Kelling, Kelling, Matlaske, West Beckham, Weybourne and Upper Sheringham.

To make the delivery of the affordable homes possible, six market sale homes were also developed as part of the scheme. The market sales are an important step for Broadland and its subsidiary, Broadland St Benedicts, as they are providing the cross-subsidiary needed to deliver affordable homes in the village of Bodham. This also marks a landmark partnership, the first of its kind in Norfolk, with North Norfolk District Council. Care has been taken in the design of the 16 homes, and the overall scheme, to ensure that it reflects the feel of the village, but also improving the design of

the affordable homes to create a shared community. Broadland hopes that by building a mixed tenure community it can reduce the stigma around social housing and help enhance the already vibrant and lively community that is in evidence in Bodham.

RESCUE WOODEN BOATS news update!

The Historic Fishing Boats Regatta at the end of July was hosted in Wells-next-the Sea by charity Rescue Wooden Boats, with much help from Wells Harbour. The aim was to increase awareness of these few remaining beautiful boats and their stories, as well as raising some much-needed funds for our next project - restoring Wells whelker Bessie, a Dunkirk Little Ship. See details of Bessie, her story, and how to support her restoration on www.rescuewoodenboats.com

You can see films of many of these people, as well as the restoration of crab boats and whelkers on our website www.rescuewoodenboats.com/films/films-films

There were 18 wooden boats present, four whelkers, 13 crab boats and one mussel flat.

Whelker Knot was the oldest boat there built in 1938 by R E Emery. Whelker Sally was built in 1939. The latest boats were crab boat Valerie Teresa built by David Hewitt in 1989 and Auk also built by David Hewitt in 2014.

The flotilla on Saturday evening was a spectacle as the boats steamed out of the harbour into a squall and then back again.

Many visitors took great interest in the boats and some fishermen were there in their former boats. Roger Seago was in crab boat Jonathan James and was ‘over the moon’, Andy MacCallum was in Whelker Knot. Our Boys, now owned by Robin West, was built by the Emery

State-of-the-art Community Sports Hub moves a step closer

Planning permission granted as District Council works to make North Norfolk an even better place for sport.

The building of a brand new £3.2m Community Sports Hub for North Norfolk moved a step closer today with the granting of planning permission.

The decision by the Development Committee at North Norfolk District Council means another hurdle has been cleared in the bid to provide the community with state-of-the-art facilities, including three indoor tennis courts, a 25-station gym, a social area and viewing gallery, and a space for fitness classes, social activities and meetings.

The Sports Hub was identified in the council’s Indoor Sports Facility Strategy, published in 2015, and sought to provide indoor tennis courts, which have historically existed in Cromer and for which there has been long-term demand.

It is a joint project, with NNDC working alongside the Lawn Tennis Association, which it is anticipated will fund about 25% of the cost; Cromer Academy; and the Cromer Lawn Tennis and Squash Association (CLTSA). The new tennis courts will be available for use by the public, members of the CLTSA and academy students.

The Community Sports Hub will build on the existing relationship between the council and the CLTSA, with the association already receiving a subsidy of £25,000 a year from NNDC. With the council’s financing for the new development already in place and planning permission now granted, the scheme is now just waiting for the LTA to confirm its funding and for the CLTSA to give its backing to a land swap that has already been agreed by NNDC and the academy.

Cllr John Lee, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and a Conservative Ward Member for Suffield Park, said “As a local member, I’m really excited at having this fabulous facility built in my ward. As Leader of the Council, I'm extremely proud of the investment that we are committing to this project, which will provide first-class facilities for North Norfolk’s tennis

players and prospective players, but more importantly offer year-round opportunities for our young people. I expect the indoor courts will become the envy of the county and beyond.”

Cllr Nigel Pearce, a Lib Dem Ward Member for Suffield Park, said “The commencement of constructing this sports hub will benefit the entire community who wish to use this modern and progressive facility. Being centrally placed within the district – within approximately 30 minutes from the major towns in North Norfolk – this will give all an ample opportunity to become healthier, understand the wellbeing bonus of being active, and have the chance to communicate and relate to others. These long-term benefits are ones which we all should share.”

Cllr John Rest, Leader of the Independent Group at NNDC, said “This is an opportunity for NNDC to provide a state-of-the-art facility not just for Cromer but for all of the district. In any new development there is always going to be controversy but this new venture will provide cost-effective facilities for all generations to benefit from. We have to be supporting and offering opportunities to our sports players of the future.”

Another Big Wave at Cromer Pier

Coastal harmony is all set to break out at the end of Cromer Pier for the fourth year running.

Sheringham Shantymen crowned their 25th anniversary celebrations in 2015 with a sell-out show “over the border”. Now they’re warming up for another rousing return to the Pavilion Theatre stage on Sunday 4 November.

This time, their tuneful foray under the cloak of darkness will see profits go to Sheringham and Cromer Lifeboats and the Cromer Hospital Charitable Fund, an arrangement hailed by Shantymen’s musical director Brian Farrow as “another big step towards extracting any lingering sting out of Crab Wars history”.

He hopes the event can inspire fresh bouts of cross-border co-operation and lasting friendship. “There are clear signs that the United Nations peace-keeping force stationed at West Runton in blue sou’westers may soon be redundant. Another grand session of hope and harmony can work wonders”. Cromer-based writer, broadcaster and entertainer Keith Skipper will again extend a cordial welcome to “exemplary musical missionaries” and remind them of certain obligations in what many shrewd judges still regard as North Norfolk’s premier seaside resort.

The acquisition of this piece woodland was made possible by a generous donation from an old school friend of John’s.

He was volunteer manager for the National Trust for the West Runton and Beeston Regis Heath property for nearly 20 years, leading teams of volunteers in the restoration and management of heathland and woodland at West Runton and Beeston Regis.

In 2010 he was awarded an MBE for his work. In early September 2018, former and present volunteers, family, friends and National Trust staff gathered in the wood to drink a toast to the memory of John.

New signage has been installed and the woodland can be accessed on foot from Sandy Lane, opposite the entrance to Renwick Park.

“I aim to make it run as smoothly as possible – although a few cheap laughs at Sheringham’s expense should settle the nerves” said Skip. “It’s an honour to organise safe passage yet again for the Shantymen at the end of their latest fund-raising round of gigs near and far”.

The Economic Impact of Tourism report for 2017 has revealed the following : • The total number of trips (day & staying) to North Norfolk was 8,827,700. • Of these, 8,207,000 were day trips (up 5.8% from a 2016 total of 7,755,000). • And 620,700 were ‘staying’ or overnight trips (up 12.1% from a 2016 total of 553,500). • This gives a total tourism value of £505m (up 3% from a 2016 total of £495m). • In 2017 there were 11,352 actual tourism jobs (or 8,184 full time equivalent jobs). This is an increase of 3% compared to 2016.

The 2017 figures also compare well with overall growth in England – the 12.1% increase in the number of overnight trips to North Norfolk is against a background of a 3% increase in the same statistic across England as a whole. The new statistics come as North Norfolk District Council continues to pursue and support projects backing the tourism industry, perhaps most notably the Deep History Coast and Visit North Norfolk’s promotional video campaigns. On top of this, there have been anecdotal reports of bumper figures during 2018 to date, as a reflection of the long hot summer.

Hedgehog Haven

As the weather turns autumnal, the small hogs coming in will probably not reach their release weight in time for a safe winter hibernation.

One such case is Buttercup (pictured). She was found out during the day on the pavement on Mundesley Road in North Walsham, cold & very wobbly on her feet. Fortunately her finder picked her up, knowing that a hedgehog out during the day is not ok.

At only 150 gms this little one will certainly be overwintering with me.

In the last couple of weeks six hogs have left to be released but as soon as a hutch becomes empty another hog arrives to fill that space!

Remember little Boris? He is little no longer and will be being released in the near future.

You can find me on Facebook for all the latest news on the hogs.

Hundreds enjoyed guilt free cake in aid of Macmillan

Purdy’s Tea Room, based at Woodgate Nursery in Aylsham, hosted a Macmillan Coffee Day on Friday 28 September, which included two charity raffles to win a hamper full of tea room and nursery goodies (worth over £50) and the ‘must have’ 2018 Christmas advent calendar from The Body Shop.

Every hot drink sold on 28 September went to the charity, with the cakes all fitting in with the Macmillan theme - including a delicious selection of butterfly cupcakes. The coffee morning was sponsored by Calypso Coffee.

Stuart Morton, tea room owner, commented ‘This year has been really well supported and with all proceeds from the hot drinks being donated, we have raised over £1000 for Macmillan, a fantastic amount. Thank you to everyone who took part and helped us raise so much for a great cause’

Joey

They brought little Joey to stay with me, he wasn’t allowed in the flat by the sea. We had to keep him from Cleo the cat who sat licking her lips on the kitchen mat. So we cleaned out his cage and let him fly free, he did what he shouldn’t on a chair and settee. His green feathers glistened, he really looked well, he hopped on his perch and then rang his bell. The children just loved him, we wanted him to stay, when he had to go home it was such a sad day. Diane Berthelot

Clapham & Collinge Solicitors are delighted to announce their second ‘Charity Lasting Powers of Attorney Scheme’ taking place throughout November 2018.

As planning for later life professionals, we are keen to raise awareness about the legal and financial implications of dementia and highlight the importance of getting your legal documents in place for peace of mind. Throughout November Clapham & Collinge Solicitors are offering a 25% discount on Lasting Powers of Attorneys. What is a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)?

A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document which gives someone the authority to act on your behalf when it comes to important decisions, if you become unable to make them yourself. There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney:• Property and Financial Affairs

This document gives your attorney the authority to deal with your property, bank accounts, investments, utility companies and any other finances. This document can be used as soon as it has been registered and regardless of whether you have lost capacity. Your attorney can make decisions on your behalf, provided the decision is in your best interests, for example deciding to sell your property to pay for care fees or change where an investment is held to ensure a higher return.

For competition rules, visit www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/news/2018/holt-country-park-photography-competiton/ Follow Holt Country Park on Facebook at www.facebook.com/events/175676791769183 2/

If you instruct us through this scheme and you would also like to make a Will, we will offer Wills at our usual fee but will make an additional £40 donation to the chosen charities. All appointments regarding your Lasting Powers of Attorney must take place by Friday 21st December 2018.

This document gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your day-to-day medical and care needs, your care/residential home and life sustaining treatment. This document can only be used once you have lost capacity so if you have not made an LPA by this point, these decisions will be left to the medical professional involved in your care. This is often a point of contention as your family/friends may have differing opinions to the professionals when it comes to these decisions. In addition to a 25% discount on Lasting Powers Of Attorneys, Clapham & Collinge Solicitors will also make a £40 donation per Lasting Power of Attorney appointment to support 4 Norfolk based charities. Our chosen charities are

• The Benjamin Foundation • The Feed • North Norfolk Community Transport • North Walsham Dementia Support Group (Cameo Café)

Lin Whitehead, Head of the Private Client team said “I am delighted that we are giving our clients the opportunity to support local charities with our LPA scheme again this year. The money raised during our 2017 campaign supported 4 Norfolk charities, many of whom rely on donations and corporate support, helping them to continue delivering their services to our county.

A study by the SFE found that 36% of people admit to having made no provisions for later life. With campaigns such as our Charity Lasting Powers of Attorney Scheme we hope that it will encourage people to have these important conversations with loved ones and get their legal documents in place.”

The cost of preparing and registering a Lasting Power of Attorney will depend on whether you wish to have a Property & Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney and/or a Health & Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney prepared and registered.

To claim your discount and book your November appointment, please contact our Client Relations Team on 01603 693500. Appointments available at our Norwich, North Walsham and Sheringham offices.

The Beginning Of Autumn

I need a warm jacket to walk down the lane, summer is over, we are threatened with rain. Autumn is anxious to come rolling in, the leaves on the trees are getting quite thin. An owl on the church wall blinks wisely at me, then with a flourish flies into a tree. There are one or two poppies left in the field, the old apple tree has produced a good yield. The blackberries are ripening, I must sample a few. Tomorrow I’ll pick a punnet or two. Every month there is something new in the lane, it’s a tranquil world free from stress and strain. North Norfolk Photographic Society

Malcolm Sales gave a very interesting and inspiring talk to North Norfolk Photographic Society on Smart Phone Photography. Malcolm is an ex-professional wedding photographer, who now shoots houses for estate agents.

The first half of the evening was taken up by displaying a number of prints. Whilst he wouldn’t have ever considered using the smart phone for a wedding shoot, the advantage that it has is the immediacy – catching the moment, catching the light.

Malcolm stressed that if you use it as a toy, you can expect poor images. Treat it as a serious camera and obey the same rules regarding vision, composition, exposure, focus etc., and you should be very pleased with the images that you can achieve.

Malcolm shoots on the phone and edits on the phone. In .jpeg format, using Snapseed application (a free app), and then immediately uploads to a variety of destinations (postcards using Touchnote, photo books, sending to someone else via airdrop, social media etc.). He utilises the headphones call button as a cable release, and also uses a mini gorilla tripod.

The images he shared included black and white, panorama, street photography, landscape, and abstract.

Speaker Malcolm Sales

The second half of the talk was taken up with a practical demonstration of the Snapseed application. Malcolm took us through his Snapseed workflow: amend perspective to straighten any sloping horizontals or vertical (which should be minimal), then cropping, and only then tuning the levels in the image. He cautioned over saturating images – the smart phone screen is unlikely to be properly colour calibrated. He demonstrated the various effects possible through the Vintage, Grunge, Double exposure and Frame effects. It is possible to save the image with all the adjustments kept as layers, to enable undoing at a later date, but Malcolm tends to compress the image and upload it straightaway. This he demonstrated by using Air Drop to send straight to the nearby phone of one of our members.

Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month at Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the club Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com or see the club website at http://www.nnphotosoc.org Local Artist Exhibit at Council’s First Floor Gallery

Anna Ovenden is the latest featured artist North Norfolk District Council is showcasing the work of local artist Anna Ovenden in the First Floor Gallery at its Cromer offices until 2 November. Anna is mainly known for the ‘Arabella Collections’, she is a self-taught artist who was born and educated in Malaysia before she and her husband moved to Norfolk 19 years ago. The 1st Floor Gallery is open to the public 8.30am-5pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays; 10am-5pm on Wednesdays; and 8.30am-4.30pm on Fridays. Anna’s latest collections of landscape paintings are influenced by the big sky and constant changes along the Norfolk coast. She works mainly in acrylics and water colours and lately has taken up textile and fibre, which is incorporated in her mixed media art work. She believes that “Art is the creation of what the artist sees” and she applies this mantra to her latest collection that will be featured in Cromer. North Norfolk District Council seeks to offer free opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit gallery, and in turn provides staff and visitors the opportunity to see a variety of artists’ work. Six exhibitions are held annually.

JUBILEE PLAYERS’ AUTUMN PRODUCTION

Dial M for Murder by Frederick Knott Hitchcock suspense at the Tithe Barn, Horstead

THE JUBILEE PLAYERS PRESENT

Alfred Hitchcock needs no introduction - the master of suspense and widely regarded as one of the most influential filmmakers in the history of cinema. He directed over 50 feature films in a career spanning six decades, but perhaps became as famous for his cameo roles in most of his films. We don’t know yet if our director will find herself on stage in the Jubilee Players’ autumn production, but we can assure you that you’ll enjoy an evening of high drama as the group presents ‘Dial M for Murder’, one of Hitchcock’s most acclaimed productions.

First performed as a play on the BBC in 1952, the story centres around ex-tennis pro Tony Wendice, who wants to have his wealthy wife, Sheila, murdered so that he can get his hands on her inheritance. He blackmails an old acquaintance into carrying out the murder, and alone at home, Sheila’s evening takes a dramatic turn when the phone rings and she suddenly finds herself fighting for her life. But the carefully-orchestrated set-up goes awry leaving Wendice frantically scheming to avoid having his plot detected. Full of twists, turns and suspense, this gripping drama is a masterpiece of writing that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

We hope that the re-telling of this classic play has all the right ingredients to chill your spine, as it transports you back to a simpler time when people had to actually leave their bed to answer the phone, sometimes with disastrous consequences! Performances at The Tithe Barn, Horstead on Wednesday 24, Thursday 25 and Friday 26 October at 7.30pm. WHY CHOOSE SILVER SIL VER & W WARD ARD SOLICITORS SOLICIT ORS in 201 ? 201 ?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offers offers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT APPOINTMENT,, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norfolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 201 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 01263 823465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk

New illuminations set to celebrate Norfolk landscape

A stunning display of light is set to illuminate Humphry Repton’s vision for Sheringham Park, as the National Trust celebrates the last great landscape designer of the 18th century, in what is regarded as the best surviving example of his work in the country.

For seven nights this November, spectacular light installations will highlight Repton’s views in the landscape, enabling visitors to experience Sheringham Park in an entirely new light.

Repton Revealed credit National Trust Justin Minns

Malcolm Fisher, the National Trust’s Visitor Experience Manager at Sheringham Park said; “It’s fitting in the bicentenary year of Repton’s death, his work is celebrated for all to enjoy. Repton Revealed is a new addition to our 2018 programme and one that we hope will be a highlight for many. It will not only showcase the beauty of the natural landscape, but the work of art that it has become.

The National Trust has been working with an international team of artists including Richard Milner and Tundra, to create this site specific lighting installation in Repton’s home county.

As visitors walk the mile long route, Repton’s story will be brought to light. And just as Repton designed his landscapes, the installations will build to a big reveal, befitting to what Repton himself described as his ‘most favourite work’.

Repton delivered his vision for Sheringham Park in 1812, in one of his famous red leather books, of which only 200 survive. In that book he wrote ‘Sheringham possesses more natural beauty and local advantages than any other place I have ever seen’.

Repton’s designs were left for others to oversee, adapt or ignore, and so it’s not surprising that they sometimes turned out rather differently to the way he imagined. However, at Sheringham Park, the parkland is still essentially his work. The National Trust continue to manage the landscape to the vision he set out, a natural landscape of trees, lush flowers, and carefully planned vistas that take in some of the most beautiful landscape in Norfolk.

Repton Revealed, Sheringham Park. Friday 2 - Sunday 4, Thursday 8 – Sunday 11 November, timed tickets available from 5.30pm. Adult £13.50, Child £8. Booking essential on 0344 2491895.

Reepham Life 2019 Calendar now on sale

The Reepham Life 2019 Calendar is now on sale at retail outlets in Reepham or by mail order.

This project from the publishers of the Reepham Life community website has involved sifting through hundreds of old photographs and postcards supplied to the Reepham Archive by past and present residents or those with a connection to the town.

Produced in association with the Reepham Archive and featuring 13 photographs capturing the town’s history over the past century, the calendar also includes modern-day images of each scene.

A total of 12 pictures as well as a cover image were chosen for this sixth annual calendar, most from the first half of the 20th century. Local photographer John Tym then went out to capture many of these scenes as they are today.

Published by Reepham Community Press, the calendar costs £8 and can be purchased from Johnson’s Newsagents, Bircham Centre Charity Shop, Reepham Archive, Reepham Library, Robertson’s Family Butchers, Kerri’s Farmhouse Pine, The Crown and St Mary’s Reepham.

Wills, Gifts and Legal Jargon Fiona Hewitt, Director, Hayes + Storr

The main (although not sole) purpose of a will is usually to decide who will receive what belongs to you when you are gone. In other words, it is a gift of your ‘estate’ (everything you own), to take effect on your death. There may simply be one straightforward gift of everything to a relative, friend or charity, or you may wish to make a number of gifts to different individuals or organisations.

As lawyers, we tend to distinguish between different types of gift. The legal vocabulary used can seem over-complicated to clients, but the distinctions can be important in the administration of an estate.

It might be helpful to explain some of the most common words used in the contexts of gifts in Wills:

The word ‘legacy’ is often used in place of ‘gift’ in a legal context, because it relates particularly to a gift (of any sort) in a Will, as opposed to a lifetime gift, for example.

A ‘specific gift’ is a gift of a particular, and separately defined, item or asset. This could be a gold watch or piece of furniture, for instance, or it could be a gift of some shares in a company or even the contents of a particular bank account.

A ‘pecuniary legacy’ is a gift of an amount of money, such as ‘I give the sum of One

Your legal matters in safe hands Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle a whole range of family, property and business legal matters with care and professionalism.

Hundred Pounds to my friend Fred’.

‘Chattels’ refers to personal possessions. The reason we tend to use the rather archaic term ‘chattels’ is because it has been defined quite precisely in legislation, which can help to avoid confusion and conflict. A definition of chattels appears in the Administration of Estates Act 1925, and this is the list with which most solicitors are familiar. However, it is rather outdated, with its reference to ‘carriages’ and ‘stable furniture’, and it was amended in the Inheritance and Trustees Powers Act 2014 to mean, for legal purposes, ‘tangible movable property, other than such property which:

• consists of money or securities for money • or was used […] solely or mainly for business purposes • or was held […] solely as an investment.’

Historians and farmers may be interested to note the strong connection in the past between wealth and agricultural assets. The word ‘pecuniary’ came originally from ‘pecus’, the Latin word for cattle, and, by derivation, for wealth or money. ‘Chattel’ has the same Latin (and Anglo-Norman French) roots as our word ‘cattle’ itself.

On a related matter, clients often comment on the lack of punctuation in Wills. It is usual to be extremely sparing, especially with commas and full stops. It may be an old fashioned approach, which isn’t followed by all, but it still has merit. Although a lack of punctuation makes the Will a more difficult document to read, it avoids any possibility of

misunderstanding – the ‘Eats Shoots and Leaves’ issue*.

So if you find your draft Will or the letter accompanying it contains some unusual language or punctuation, please bear with us, but do make sure you know what it all means. If you are in any doubt, ask us for an explanation.

*’Eats shoots and leaves’ – a panda *‘Eats, shoots and leaves’ – a hungry assassin

recent press release stating that, ‘NNDC regards the provision of public conveniences, as a key service, underpinning the district’s tourism offering as well as town centre economies’.

HUGE INVESTMENT PLANNED FOR PUBLIC LAVATORIES IN NORTH NORFOLK, BUT HOLT LOSES OUT AGAIN Holt Town Council is incensed that Holt has not been included in the recent investment of £600,000 in public toilet facilities.

North Norfolk District Council has announced, with a flourish, their huge investment but Holt, recently reclassified as a tourist town, will see none of this investment.

Cllr Moore said “Holt Town Council took over the Church Street toilet block when NNDC threatened it with closure as we recognised the need to have a second toilet block in the town. The importance of providing public conveniences is now supported by the leaders of all three groups at the District Council with a

It is sad that this does not seem to apply to the ‘Tourist Town’ of Holt.” To add insult to injury car park revenue has allowed NNDC to invest in the toilets in Sheringham, Wells, Fakenham, North Walsham, Bacton and Walcott but, as Holt Town Council were keen to point out, the Albert Street Car Park in Holt is one of the best revenue incomes in the district. Cllr Allison said that it seemed unbelievable that North Norfolk District Council stated they are committed to providing public toilets for the benefit of both residents and visitors alike but alas, not dedicated to providing upgraded facilities for Holt.

SHERINGHAM ARMISTICE CENTENARY CONCERT Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society Remembrance Concert

Family Open Evening at Worstead Pre School

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society has been particularly keen to commemorate the centenary of the First World War over the last 4 years. The choir will mark the centenary of the Armistice on 11 November 1918 with the Sheringham Armistice Centenary concert in St Peter’s Sheringham on Saturday 10 November 2018 at 7.30 pm. The singers, directed by David Ballard, will be joined by soloists Rosamund Walton (who coincidentally sang the words of Edith Cavell at the 2014 Sheringham Remembrance concert) and Julian Chou-Lambert together with an invited chamber orchestra.

The concert will feature suitable Music for Remembrance including Ralph Vaughan Williams very moving Dona Nobis Pacem which he wrote in 1936 pleading for peace by referring to previous wars during the growing fears of a new one. The work includes texts from poems by Walt Whitman and from the book of Jeremiah. The programme also includes Gabriel Fauré’s much loved Requiem with its focus on eternal rest and consolation. The choir will also perform a short piece called Christian Soldiers which is from the opening movement of Patrick Hawes’ Great War Symphony which had its world premiere in the Royal Albert Hall on 9 October. This provides a very apt link back to the choir’s 2014 commemorations when the choir commissioned Patrick Hawes to write Eventide – in Memoriam Edith Cavell to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

This concert which is part of Sheringham’s overall Armistice Centenary events is performed in collaboration with COAST Arts and promises to be a most memorable commemoration of the Armistice centenary. Tickets for the concert are available from Sheringham Little Theatre, telephone 01263 822347 or online at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com priced £12 (under 18’s free) or £15 on the door. Visit www.sheringhamandcromerchoral.co.uk for more information about the choir.

as well as health and wellbeing activities. The rest is going towards an expansion of the Dial a Ride Scheme. Meanwhile, the CTF remains open for applications, and any voluntary organisation that currently provides or wishes to set up a community transport service in North Norfolk is encouraged to apply for a grant.

Applications to the CTF can be submitted at any time, and decisions on applications will be made in March, July and November. To be considered this November, applications need to be submitted by 26 October.

For more information or to apply for a grant, visit www.north-norfolk.gov.uk and search for ‘Community Transport Fund. To discuss a potential application, call the Communities Team on 01263 516173 or 01263 516248.

Broadland Chess Club So let’s play chess!

The long days of summer are now coming to an end which means that the children are back to school and the new chess season is upon us. Just like the transfer season in football chess players change clubs, so Broadland Chess Club are pleased to welcome some new members and also inevitably to say goodbye to others. During the summer other changes have also happened, we will now be playing occasional team matches at the River Rooms, Coltishall however as always our main club nights will remain upstairs at the Kings Head, Coltishall on Monday and Wednesday nights at 7.30pm. More information can be found on our facebook/twitter pages.

We will also continue to run our very successful Junior chess sessions starting at 6.30pm on Mondays, and talking of which Paul Badger who coaches them has given us this exiting news about some of our youngest members. The UK Chess Challenge is the largest chess tournament in the world; this season over 40,000 juniors entered. Initially they played in a 7 round tournament at their school or club with only the top scorers qualifying to play in the Megafinal, of which

there were 46 around the UK. The leading scorers at the 6 round Megafinal qualified for the Gigafinal, of which there were only 3. The leading scorers at the 6 round Gigafinal qualified for the Terafinal – there is only 1 Terafinal, which includes Challengers sections. Therefore, to reach the Terafinal, a player must be consistently successful over the course of 19 games!

At Broadland we are delighted that two members of our Club, Jack Hall and Darcy Pashley have reached the Challengers section of the Terafinal. We are also pleased that Amy Little, who attended a Broadland coaching session prior to the Gigafinal, won her section in the Gigafinal and has qualified for the Terafinal. The Terafinal will take place in September and we hope that all three juniors will enjoy the experience and will be successful.

At the end of June some of our Junior members also took part in The Norfolk Junior Teams tournament. In the u-75 section Broadland Ring-tails were unbeaten and finished second. The attached photo shows our team of Jacob Davison, Jack Hall (captain), George Hall and Ferdinand Skodlerack with their silver medals. In the Open section Broadland Cygnets finished third and were awarded bronze medals. Normally in September we would start with a fresh board (see what I did there), however due to other commitments and schedules there is still one tournament that remained undecided. The final of the Norfolk and Suffolk cup took place on 9 September at the Virgin Money Lounge in Norwich between BCC and the Bury St Edmunds club representing Suffolk. BCC retained the title and our second photo taken by Paul Badger shows our winning team with the cup.

The tournaments consisted of 5 rounds of 10 minute per player matches. The overall winner of Tournament 1 was Cristina Casti (with a score of 4.5 out of 5) and the overall winner of Tournament 2 was Harry McLean (with a score of 4 out of 5).

Colleagues smiled and said good day Then offered help in any way, A 'cuppa' came, the saucer dry, The day was really on a high.

At lunch time fresh cooked fish and chips Bowl of brown sauce in which to dip, Then back to work all replete The daily tasks I then complete. Drive back home in record time Dinner ready – steak pie – fine, Favourite programmes on TV tonight Another day turned out alright.

Oh heck! There goes that wretched alarm Must get up, it destroys the calm, All that bright day just imagination Here goes another day, all frustration. Paul Scrivener

Service and Social Club, 64 Hungate Street, Aylsham on Monday evenings) will field 2 teams in the NCCA league - as well as players having internal graded competitions and playing friendly chess games.

Bob Grindrod (Aylsham Chess Club - Chair) “Aylsham Chess Club members are excited at the prospect of running 3 new teams in the 2018-19 season - the Aylsham Spitfires and Aylsham Hurricanes will play league fixtures and Aylsham Lightnings will play in quick-play competitions.”
