It’s been a megneficackle challenge for maliwills everywhere!

Or so they might say if you were in a Roald Dahl story. Over the course of the summer holidays children across North Norfolk have been making up odd words to add to a Wurdy Gurdy Machine in homage to the celebrated wordsmith Dahl as part of this year’s summer reading challenge. Their wonderful wordy inventions all contributed to one magnefickle story which is to be officially unveiled as part of the traditional certificate handout for the annual challenge. County Councillor Hilary Cox will be joined at Cromer Library on 24 September by the Town Mayor, Tim Adams, to enjoy the wondiforous story. They are giving out medals all morning with the official opening of the Wurdy Gurdy Machine at 11am.

The workshops were run by local writer and wordsmith Belona Greenwood, aka Miss Fluttlewordblurger, which have proved to be the perfect anecdote for children and parents looking for something fun and educational to do over the holiday season. The workshops ran across all eight north Norfolk libraries to wild celesterics and a big thank you to all those who took part and helped organise the sessions. Wreck in Blakeney Harbour Entrance

The wreck of the SS Hjordis a 976 ton Norwegian collier which went down off Blakeney Point in 1916 now sits on Blakeney bar in the middle of the Blakeney Harbour channel entrance posing a real hazard to vessels coming in and out As the channel has moved half a mile to the east in the last year it has uncovered the wreck and the flow of water around her has scoured her out. Harbour users, who are represented by the Blakeney Harbour Association, have been receiving regular updates in the last month or two. Blakeney Harbour Association volunteers have continually re-buoyed the channel entrance and the Trinity House vessels MV Galatea and MV Alert have been seen off Blakeney in the last weeks as they positioned a new warning buoy.

Full details and coordinates can be found on the Blakeney Harbour Association website: http://blakeneyharbourassociation.co.uk/latest-news/

Association secretary Charlie Ward said ''it's quite astounding just how far the channel has moved over a very short space of time. With the wreck now in the middle of the channel and the channel continuing to move East, there is a lot of work for our volunteers to do, frequently re-buoying the harbour entrance channel to keep pace with these changes".

Crab & Lobster Festival toasts successful auction and crabbing championships

The 2016 Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival came to a close on Sunday 28 August with the World Pier Crabbing Championships and annual auction in Cromer.

More than 100 dinky beach huts lined the pier forecourt, local food and craft stalls filled the promenade and lines were set ready for a fun-filled, action-packed day of competitive crabbing and bidding.

And the sunny bank holiday Sunday saw thousands of people visiting the town to take part in the festivities. Prior to World Pier Crabbing Championships scores of people queued along the pier to register before nets and lines were dropped into the sea at 10.30am.

After three hours of competitive crabbing the World Pier Crabbing Champion title, which is won by the largest number of crabs caught on a line, was won by Team IDK from Norwich, who caught eight crabs. The team of four – David Porter, Rachael Kirkham, 12-year-old Daisy Porter and 10-year-old Holly Porter - said “It’s amazing, we can’t believe we won!” They were awarded the Richard Davies Memorial Plate which is named memory of former Cromer lifeboat coxswain Richard Davies who died in 2010.

Other prizes awarded were to Emma Critchley, who caught the largest crab measuring 125mm and to Robyn Clarke who caught the most crabs in a net with a total of 35. Under the hammer of auctioneer Tim Blythe, the 101 boats sold in just over 60 minutes to raise over £6,500. The beach huts were part of the Festival’s art trail which ran from Easter, over the Festival weekend and up until the Auction. Over 400 individuals had a hand in decorating the huts including 10 community groups and schools as well as families and staff of local businesses.

After furious bidding on many of the lots the hut that achieved the top price at auction was sponsored by The Garden House Gallery in Cromer and fetched £1,000. This was followed by the hut sponsored by Breakers Cafe in Cromer which raised £670.

Prior to the auction more than 400 members of the public voted for their favourite hut. In first place was Sabre Tackle in Cromer, followed by Sheringham Trawler in second and Buoys, Toys and Models from Cromer in third. Festival chairman Tony Shipp said “Seeing all the huts The Friends of Sheringham Woodfields School are on show together for pleased to announce the first time was spectacular along the pier forecourt, I think Quiz Evening and Pudding! it went very well and we are extremely Thursday 22nd September 2016 pleased with the 7pm start support the auction At Sheringham Woodfields School received and the amount raised.” Cost per person is £5.00, which includes pudding The Festival wishes (pudding club style) and participation in quiz to thank all the A maximum of 6 people per team people who helped, supported and bid at Bring your own bottle. Alternatively, a selection of soft drinks will be on offer throughout the evening. the event.

Next year’s Festival will take place 20-21 May 2017.

BEESTON REGIS CELEBRATIONS

Saturday, 6 August was a big day in the history of Beeston Regis as the foundation of Beeston Priory 800 years ago in 1216 was celebrated.

There was a weekend of medieval-themed events on the meadow and a service in the priory ruins conducted by the Rt Revd Graham James, Bishop of Norwich and the Revd David Head, Rector of All Saints’ Church.

The service was preceded by the chimes of bells summoning us to the priory ruins and included monastic plainsong and the age-old sound of flint-knapping. As the congregation prepared to pray they were invited to ‘keep silence for a while, listening to the timeless sounds - the wind, the trees, birdsong, the stories told by the ancient walls on every side ...’

Attention then moved to All Saints’ Church and the arrival of the Diocese of Norwich Classic Car Rally on Church Field. The Bishop and the Rector led a special service in the church attended by the rally participants.

John Capgrave, a famous theologian writing in 1424, described the order of canons at Beeston Regis as ‘an order which is not in the world, as they say, but in Norfolk’. Just to show that All Saints’ is very much of the world the church was full of flowers arranged to celebrate the Olympic Games in Rio.

The Bishop said that his prayers for the day included one for good weather and another for a win for Norwich City - and we had them both!

Fakenham Parish Church Biennial Flower Festival 6 – 10 October

“All things bright and beautiful; All creatures great and small. All things wise and wonderful; The Lord God made them all

How better to praise God than by filling our church with flower displays that illustrate the opening of this well-loved hymn? Between 6 and 10 October you will be able to see 28 works of the flower arranger’s Art in Fakenham Parish Church. It is the occasion of the Biennial Flower Festival. Come along and soak in the vibrant colours; breathe in the heady scents; gaze at the artistic forms of the wonderful displays.

The Festival will be open to the public from 10am to 5pm on Thursday 6th, Friday 7th, Saturday 8th and Monday 10 October and from 12noon to 5pm on Sunday 9th. A special Festival Service will be held in the church at 10.30am on the Sunday. There will also be an opportunity for you to browse the new books and collectibles stalls while partaking of some refreshments. You are all welcome. Entry is free.

The Festival gives us all an opportunity to enjoy some quiet time out, revelling in the joys that flowers can give us, in the beautiful setting of our church; and the money raised helps to take forward the work of the Church in Fakenham. In the months prior to the start of the Festival, a sponsorship scheme was open to all members of the public, who were invited to sponsor one or more of the displays, thus providing the financial resources for the displays to be put together.

Judging by previous years, these five days will bring great pleasure to hundreds of people – local inhabitants and visitors – who will take home with them enduring memories of our church dressed in its brightest and most glowing colours

Register in advance to speak

The way members of the public book their chance to speak about specific planning applications at North Norfolk District Council's Development Committee meetings is about to change.

At the moment people must arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of the meeting and request to speak either for or against an application. This is to allow time for the Chairman to rearrange the order of items on the agenda to prevent people having to wait for a long time.

For 'minor' applications, one objector and one supporter is allowed to speak on each application for up to three minutes. If several people have attended to speak on a single application either in support or in objection, they must agree among themselves who will fill the speaking roles.

For ‘major’ applications, or those in which the Council has legal interest or is the landowner, up to four objectors will be allowed to speak for up to three minutes each. Up to four supporters will be allowed to speak for an equivalent time in total to that allowed for the objectors.

From 22 September those wishing to speak will need to register by 9am on the Tuesday before the Thursday meeting (or 48 hours in advance if the day of the meeting is switched from the usual Thursday).

This will allow the list of speakers to be assembled, the agenda ordered in advance and this information circulated to key officers prior to the meeting.

Cllr Sue Arnold, Cabinet Member for Planning and Planning Policy, said "The change will assist with the smooth running of the committee.

"It will avoid potential confusion at the start of the meeting as customer service staff try to ensure the names of speakers are logged against the various items and the agenda re-ordered to reflect the public interest."

The new procedure came into force from 1 September ready for Development Committee on 22 September and information about the new registration process is online.

The number of people allowed to speak and the amount of time they will be allowed to speak for will remain the same.

NORTH NORFOLK MP NORMAN LAMB ANNOUNCES DATES OF HIS ANNUAL ‘VILLAGE TOUR’

Each year, Member of Parliament Norman Lamb spends a week holding street corner advice surgeries in villages across his North Norfolk constituency. This year, his schedule includes more villages than ever. The full schedule of stops on the tour can be found on his website www.normanlamb.org.uk/norman_lamb_village_tour_2016

The rules for local district councillors and town or parish council representatives speaking at the committee are unchanged.

There will also be less noticable changes to Development Committee rules involving deferred items, committee site visits and the cut off time for the submission of information.

Norman Lamb Calls for North Norfolk District Council to Adopt '2 Minute Beach Clean' Initiative

Norman Lamb and Liberal Democrat District Councillor Sarah Butikofer recently visited the Seaview Beach Cafe at West Runton to find out more about the '#2 Minute Beach Clean' initiative being run there.

Cafe owner, Louise O'Shea, has introduced a board outside her cafe inviting people to take a litter picker and plastic bag in order to collect rubbish off the beach. The rubbish is then put into the bin outside her cafe. The boards are provided by the not-for-profit organisation The Beach Clean Network, and typically businesses pay about £300 to have one.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said ‘Every day holidaymakers take these litter pickers and collect litter off the beach. The result is that this beach in West Runton is kept in immaculate

condition and it is an army of volunteers who end up doing this throughout the year. When we visited there was no rubbish visible at all! It is a brilliant initiative.

and she deserves real credit for this. I would strongly encourage NNDC to think about rolling something like this out along all of the North Norfolk coastal resorts’.

Our suggestion, after talking to Louise, is that NNDC should try to set up this sort of scheme for every major beach in North Norfolk, encouraging volunteers to come forward and getting companies to sponsor it. This could be an amazing community initiative and would inevitably be very successful in keeping beaches clean. I have written to Sheila Oxtoby, Chief Executive of the District Council, to put this idea forward. Louise has started something fantastic here and it would make a lot of sense for the Always a warm welcome Council to look at how family run business serving they can spread this home cooked dishes prepared to order approach across North using locally sourced produce where possible Norfolk’.

Sarah Butikofer, District Councillor for The Runtons Ward, said ‘I'm delighted with this initiative by Louise. The beach at West Runton is now spotless

A CHAPLAIN ON TWO WHEELS - FUNDRAISING CYCLE RIDE FOR THE HOMELESS Mark Bredin, Quaker Chaplain for prisons in Norfolk, recently undertook a cycle ride commencing on Monday 22 August outside Norwich prison and cycling to Kings Lynn, Martham, Walcott, Sheringham, Wells-next-the-Sea, finishing up outside Wayland prison on 25 August. He was raising funds for The House of Genesis ) Reg charity 1095284) and to raise awareness about the chronic need for housing, especially for those who leave prison.

Mark and his companions stayed overnight on the Tuesday at Wells-next-the-Sea Meeting House, where they enjoyed a meal provided by local Friends and an opportunity to talk about their cycle ride. One of them said it was ‘a challenge’ and the other described it as ‘inspiring’. The House of Genesis was started by Val

Dodsworth, who was concerned by the many homeless people around Norwich. She received an MBE recently for many years of service in the care of the homeless and also her work starting up the Street Pastors venture in Norwich.

Mark Bredin is a member of Kings Lynn Quaker Meeting and Quaker chaplain for Norwich and Wayland prisons.

So far they have raised over £10,000 which will enable the House of Genesis to continue its invaluable work and increase capacity.

The Dance for Fun girls have enjoyed more success, this time winning the Junior Talent Contest at Cromer carnival.

The girls competed against 15 other acts in the talent contest heats held on Cromer Pier and were placed first in their class with their pirate themed gymnastic dance routine.

Further delight came when they were awarded the overall winner’s trophy and were asked to perform the dance again. The girls are aged between 6 and 12 years old and for many of them this was their first performance on a professional stage. The Dance for Fun after school club meets at Smallburgh Village Hall on Wednesday evenings between 6pm and 8pm for children aged 6 years upwards. Children learn ballet, tap, disco and gymnastic dance and take part in many different events throughout the year.

Her choice of instrument was the very compact Yamaha D-Deck organ - a full two keyboard instrument that is light enough to tuck under one arm when transporting it from gig to gig, yet the quality and richness of the sounds was just unbelievable!

Penny Weedon

Penny’s programme kicked off with ‘Zambezi’, and followed with such delights as the March from ‘A Bridge Too Far’, ‘The Hustle’, Sam Smith’s James Bond theme ‘The Writing’s On The Wall’, the 'Prelude from Act 3 of Lohengrin', and as a finisher she played a faultless and very fast version of Michael Flatley’s ‘Lord Of The Dance’. As usual, the evening helped to raise funds for the Copeman Centre in Briston, with the proceeds from the Raffle and Refreshments making a whopping ÂŁ192 for their fundraising, and a further ÂŁ28.90 was raised for our chosen charity, the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital.

The next show will be on Friday 30 September, when one of the UK’s rising star musicians will be with us for the first time - the very clever John Cooper. Tickets are already selling well, at just £6 each, with accompanied under 16’s getting in absolutely free - if you would like to book for this show, or just get

A Wonderful Evening of Music held in aid of Hospice A concert given by Norfolk Choral Fellowship (NCF) at St Nicholas Church, Dersingham on Saturday 30 July raised the sum of ÂŁ328.16 for The Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House.

Those present enjoyed an inspirational evening of singing, alongside Iain Sturgeon on clarinet and Matthew Green on percussion. The excellent acoustics at this wonderful venue undoubtedly enhanced such an evening.

This is the second time the NCF have given a concert in support of the Hospice. Members of the group are either active or retired musicians in the Salvation Army and with strong affiliation to the organisation. Its members travel from all over Norfolk, freely giving of their time.

Peter Parker, volunteer at the Hospice and involved in the planning of the evening said "It's support like this, which is so important in enabling us to continue to provide much needed services in West Norfolk, that really makes a difference to the amount and quality of support we can provide to the local community.

Non-surgical body contouring Do we have an alternative to liposuction?

Liposuction remains the top cosmetic surgical procedure worldwide. There is however, a strong demand for non-invasive procedures that can address localised pockets of fat. OK. I am going to give you my conclusion right at the start.

Unfortunately none of the heavily marketed devices have lived up to the hype so far. They certainly have a place in a cosmetic clinic but it is limited!

Here I provide information on two of the most known devices. Zerona™ is one of the several low level laser devices marketed as laser lipo. The theory is that low-level laser therapy opens pores in fat cells and they leak fat, which is then cleared by the body’s metabolic processes. These are marketed as laser lipo but are not as effective as true laser liposuction. One well known UK manufacturer of a similar device recently went bust!

Zeltiq™ device selectively freeze fat cells in a controlled manner and cause fat cell death. So we know that fat cells are actually destroyed by this method. A treatment session takes an hour or more. This combination of low temperature and treatment time is such that it damages fat cells but not the overlying skin, as fat cells are more susceptible to cold. Again multiple sessions may be required with this device. Other non-invasive options for fat removal are radiofrequency and low frequency ultrasound machines and focused ultrasound devices.

My treatment of choice for fat reduction remains laser liposuction and here are my reasons: 1. It provides best visible results. Non-invasive treatments do not even come close to the results achieved by this technique. 2. It is carried out under pure local anaesthesia so there are no risks associated with general anaesthesia. 3. Three-dimensional contouring can be achieved and majority of

patients require one session only. 4. It can be combined with fat transfer.

If you are after modest improvement and do not mind having multiple sessions then non-invasive fat reduction may be suitable for you. This will not, however provide results comparable to laser assisted micro-cannula liposuction which remains the gold standard for body contouring. Non-surgical treatments may also prove more expensive.

Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCAAM, Medical Director and Laser Surgeon of Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic has more than 10 years of experience with lasers in dermatology and aesthetic surgery. Dr Gheyi focuses on providing results oriented, cost effective and safe treatments. Visit www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call 0800 0430737 for more information.

A Grove Miscellany

hoped this was not a regular occurrence. Mother cleared the leaves from the valley and returned, much wetter, by the way in which she had entered.

A few reminiscences of 75 years at The Grove, by John Graveling.

Part 7: Lincoln Connection?

It was not unusual for the odd accident to happen. One was when we had a very tetchy cow who laid into father with its back leg. He seldom complained but this time it must have hurt because he went off to the hospital just round the corner. Except in the summer months he always wore long pants. The young nurse at the hospital told him to take off his trousers and then proceeded to start removing his long johns. He was having none of that. “Young lady what do you think you are doing? You are not going to do that to me.” He hopped off the bed, pulled up his trousers and hobbled home. The only accident I recall mother having was early one morning. She always got up at some incredibly early hour to do the housework. The kitchen window was high above the floor and mother was short – not much more than five feet. She climbed on to a step ladder to clean the window, slipped and put her hand straight through the glass. She suffered an enormous cut on her forearm. I don’t recall that she went to the doctors but bound it up tightly and let it repair itself.

There were some great characters around. Fred Lincoln lived in a little cottage alongside the road just before you reached Overstrand. He was a horseman. Not that he rode them. He was brought up with them. He always wore an old trilby hat pulled down over his ears; a Hitler type moustache; pipe in his mouth; and buskins round his legs. He rented farm buildings just up the road from The Grove and was always ready to help out whenever required. For the coronation we dressed him up with a union jack around his shoulders and his horse and cart all decorated up as he went in the procession. I only recently became aware that Abraham Lincoln’s great great great great grandfather was from Hingham in Norfolk. Was Fred related?

done. Edna and I were on the back but Edna was nearer the back than me and got jolted off. Father ran round, picked her up and sat her down on what he thought was a pile of grass. But this pile was full of nettles. In those days girls always wore skirts. Poor Edna’s legs did not take too kindly to those nettles!

One winters evening Fred called round and he was suffering from a cold in the nose. He pushed his hand in his trouser pocket and started to pull out what we expected to be a hankerchief. More and more came out till finally we realised that it was an old shirt. Why not – they make good hankerchiefs. Fred lived on his own. We know that he had a son who came round here a few times. He was a bit wild and joined up with a circus. Later in life Fred met a red-headed lady of about his own age. Father met them up at the station one Saturday and enquired where they were going. “We’ve just got married and we’re off to Norwich on our honeymoon!”

Abraham Lincoln

He would also never be beaten. One very wet summer we had a field of oats that was so badly laid that we could not get the binder onto it. He came round just as I was getting home from school in my school uniform and said “there is only one field that I have not seen harvested, and that’s this one – come on get out of your livery and let’s get on with it.” It was only about an acre and a half and we cut it all by scythe.

Above the kitchen is a flat roof with a valley Fred was a wonderful Norfolk man in every running along the wall with number 8 way. The entrance to his yard was a bit rough bedroom. This valley can get full of leaves and and father drove the horse and cart in there one has to be cleaned out regularly; if not, in a day a little bit quicker that he should have heavy rain the water level can build up so that water runs down into the kitchen. Jean and David had not been married long and were sleeping in room 8 when we had a downpour. Suddenly to their consternation the bedroom door LTD LT D opened and in charged mother wearing an old mac. Forbidden Fruit

Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

You may have seen headlines in the press in August: “Apple tells mourning father to get court order to access late son’s music, photos and ‘memories’”.

The case relates to young man of 20, Morgan Hehir, who was murdered in an unprovoked attack, while out on a Hallowe’en night last year. Apple said that, due to strict privacy laws, it could not hand over the data to the Hehir family without legal authority. Apple argued, perhaps not unfairly, that some Apple customers may not want their private data transferred to other people, even upon their death; and that therefore Apple could not override password protected data. Apple said that it was not for them to make the decision.

A Grant of Probate of a Will (or Grant of Letters of Administration, where there is no Will) is a Court Order, but that wasn’t specific enough for Apple. Morgan’s father, Colin was told it wasn’t a legal matter and the Information Commissioner said it wasn’t a data protection issue. Colin pointed out that Morgan owned the computer and the data and that Apple owned only the access.

It is a fair argument that not necessarily everyone would want their executors and/or family to have access to all their private data in the event of their death. Some things are best kept secret and taken to the grave! On the basis that ‘prevention is better than cure’, what steps should be taken to prevent such a situation arising?

First, the obvious answer; which is to keep the relevant passwords, not

Lloyd Court Summer Festival

The team at Lloyd Court in Kelling put on a fantastic event on Sunday 31 July in aid of raising funds for the Alzheimer's Society, Air Ambulance, Fire Fighters Charity and Lloyd Court Amenity Fund raising a total £1200.

The manager Marie Quantrill said "This was all possible because of the hard work of Lucy Cubitt who organised the event, Diana Youngman and Charlene Pointer".

Marie said "The support from local businesses and the people of the wider community was phenomenal. We want to build on the success of the day in involving different charities and local businesses in giving something back to the serving community in a fun way."

Marie added "The Holt Fire Fighters put on a demonstration of an emergency situation where they cut a person out of a car, this really raised awareness of what goes on when all you see is a road block".

There was also a dog show, pony rides, traditional games, food and drinks, Arnie's chain saw carvings, stocks, children's fancy dress, giant slide, Taekwondo demo, tug of war, ukuleles and a messy challenge where the loser ended up in a bath of baked beans. The event was geared up for all age groups and the atmosphere was very lively.

Regional Director, Roy Slater said "The team have done brilliantly and I would personally like to thank everyone who has supported this event".

just for Apple, but for all online matters such as bank accounts, utilities etc somewhere able to be accessed upon death or incapacity. Several of my clients have already done so using the old-fashioned method of a hard copy letter stored in our strongroom along with their Wills, Deeds and Powers of Attorney.

Secondly, another option, which I am yet to put into being, is a specific statement in the Will and/or Lasting Power of Attorney authorising the release to the executor/attorney of all encrypted data and ordering all providers to grant their executors full access to it.

Best practice would be to do both.

It is doubtful that Morgan, age 20, who died so tragically and suddenly, and who worked as a hospital clerk, but moonlighted as a graffiti artist and musician, was someone who would have made a Will. Apple’s attitude is, however, food for thought for the rest of us.

WELFARE VET CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF RESCUING HORSES

Redwings Horse Sanctuary marks Head of Welfare and Behaviour, Nic de Brauwere’s 25th anniversary at the charity. It was on Wednesday 28August 1991 that the newly qualified veterinary surgeon Nic de Brauwere joined Redwings Horse Sanctuary.

Nic graduated from Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute in South Africa earlier that year and brought to the Sanctuary unparalleled compassion and insight (as well as a curious penchant for fountain pens!).

It is this understanding and skill that has seen Nic provide clinical care, herd health management, and round up and rescue expertise to both Redwings and fellow welfare organisations for the past 25 years. Indeed, as testament to Nic’s extensive experience working in the field of equine welfare, in 2009 he was elected to be Chairman of the National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC) – an umbrella organisation for equine rescue centres and sanctuaries across the UK and a role he fulfils alongside heading up Redwings’ welfare and behaviour teams.

As Head of Welfare and Behaviour, Nic’s knowledge is fundamental to Redwings’ rescue work, in particular specialising in the rounding-up and subsequent rehabilitation and long-term care of feral, unhandled or mistreated horses, and it is his expertise in this field that has spearheaded Redwings’ approach to not only equine health and welfare but equine behaviour and training too. Colleague and fellow veterinary surgeon Roxane Kirton explains:

“Nic has dedicated his career to the promotion and advancement of horse welfare. He has led the development of our behaviour programme at Redwings because he has the vision and conviction to drive forward change and make things happen, while always being open-minded and reflective of ways in which we can improve the lives of our horses.

commitment to an English equivalent that came into force the following year.

However, it is his unwavering commitment and passion that those who work and have worked with Nic comment on most frequently. Nic has headed up several high profile rescue operations – including the notorious Spindle Farm in Amersham in 2008 where over 100 horses, ponies and donkeys were rescued over a gruelling 24-hour period – and he regularly lends his experience as an expert witness in prosecution cases.

Indeed, even those who are not fortunate enough to work alongside Nic shoulder-to-shoulder in rescuing horses in need, cannot help but be inspired during his retelling of what he has experienced as a frequent event speaker. His compassion is tangible, and at a recent event both he and the whole audience were moved to tears while reflecting on Redwings’ largest ever rescue operation in 2013 where over 400 horses were found in South Wales in some of the most horrific scenes ever witnessed by the charity.

Commenting on Nic’s 25 years at Redwings, Chief Executive Lynn Cutress said “Nic has been instrumental in our landmark achievements as a charity and this is testament to his 25-year commitment to Redwings and helping horses in need.

“Both within our own charity and in his partnership working with our fellow animal welfare organisations and key partners like local authorities and emergency services, Nic’s drive and determination are inspirational and demonstrate that when working together we can achieve the unachievable – from the Amersham rescue to the phenomenal work in Wales. When the chips are down for horses in dire need, I always know Nic and his team will deliver.”

“I – and his whole team – are so proud to work alongside Nic and to be part of such a dynamic and forward-thinking department, plus his brilliant sense of humour and vivid shirt collection ensures there is never a dull day!” Nic has also been involved in consultations on many areas of animal welfare policy; most notably he worked with the Welsh Government between 2012 and 2014 to help draft the Control of Horses (Wales) Act, which became law in 2014 and helped energise the

Norfolk Food Bank Given Electric Support

A North Norfolk food bank will provide a lifeline for even more families in crisis after cutting its running costs with the introduction of an all-electric Nissan e-NV200 van. Cromer and District Food Bank, which covers an area of 200 square miles, supplied three-day emergency food packages to 2,409 people in need, including 920 children, last year.

Garden Maintenance? Having a problem?

And now it will be able to help even more vulnerable local people after taking delivery of its new 100% electric Nissan van, which has been funded by a grant from the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund and supplied and sponsored by local Nissan dealership, Crayford and Abbs. The Nissan e-NV200 costs just two pence per mile to run and has significantly lower maintenance costs. The charity will use the savings it makes to feed more families.

We’ll get it done!

Ella King, Project Manager at Cromer and District Foodbank, said “We cover around 200 miles a day making deliveries and before we were spending a small fortune on diesel. Now though, the e-NV200 has cut our running costs significantly and that’s money we can plough straight back into providing food for the people we exist to support.

She added There’s a huge and growing need for food banks in and around this area so the addition of this van and the support of the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund and Crayford and Abbs is real boost.”

Silver for Emily

18 year old Cromer girl, Emily Bowyer, has managed to achieve a Silver medal, at the recent British Junior Rowing Championships, held at Nottingham. Emily paired up with fellow Norwich Rowing Club member, Hattie Bracey of Norwich, in their Double Sculls event. It is a major honour to qualify for this competition, so to achieve a Silver medal is a fantastic effort.

Emily has only been rowing for just two years, and has reached the Final in the British Champs twice now, just missing out on rowing for England, both times, by one place. Emily's sister, Molly, 16, also qualified, for what was her first British Champs, and rowed well in the time trials, but her Final, was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions, so could not add to the family's tally!

Sole with Spinach and Orange Sauce

Another busy summer holiday season has come to an end and once again we’ve seen hundreds of holidaymakers through the doors, enjoying our Gold Award-winning accommodation and two AA Rosette dining.

The Grove has always been wonderfully family-friendly; as children we used to run all over

the grounds and use the bedrooms in the winter as extra play areas. At one point Mother had five children under ten, in addition to running the house, cooking and laundry, and it is hard to imagine how she pulled it off! Anyway please do enjoy this recipe and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Ingredients: 4 Sole fillets 300 ml Orange Juice 1 Tblsp Honey 1 Clove of garlic (Crushed) 10 ml Olive Oil 200 g Baby spinach Salt and black pepper to taste

WINDOW & DOOR REPAIRS

Method: Preheat oven to 180C Lightly brush the sole fillets with olive oil and season well with salt and pepper. Grill the sole until just cooked. In a pan, bring the orange juice, honey and garlic to a simmer until it reduces to half the volume. Then whisk in the remaining olive oil and set to one side. KEEPING UP WITH DEMAND

Local law firm Clapham & Collinge has expanded its network with new offices in North Walsham and disputes, employment and commercial

With an innovative new look and a refreshing approach to law, a well-known Norfolk law firm has expanded its network of offices in the county. Clapham & Collinge Solicitors has opened a branch in North Walsham, extending its reach across North Norfolk.

The new offices build on an existing presence in Norwich, Sheringham and Brooke for a firm which celebrated its 60th anniversary last year. As an independent law firm acting for individuals and business clients, the team at Clapham & Collinge believes in adopting an informal and friendly approach to its customers. Partner and Head of Family and Charities Departments Neale Grearson said: “We provide a full range of legal services for business and individuals in Norfolk; everything from divorce, conveyancing, wills, trusts and probate. We are very much a law firm that is trying to move away from the stuffy stereotype of solicitors’ offices with a more open and approachable stance and one where we want to encourage our clients to call when they have a problem without worrying about the bills starting to run up straight away. We take an innovative approach to meet the needs of our clients by offering appointments outside usual office hours and at their home or business if they prefer rather than coming into the office.”

Business clients also receive the full attention and expertise of the Clapham & Collinge team with services including debt recovery, litigation

property law. With offices open six days a week, staff members at Clapham & Collinge are committed to making themselves more accessible to existing and new clients. Marketing Manager Louis Hilldrup-Boorman said: “As a firm of solicitors we work very hard to set ourselves apart from the competition in that we are more approachable and try to provide added value with our involvement in the community and our work with dementia awareness events and various training sessions. We also offer free advice mornings where people can come in and see our solicitors on a range of issues such as conveyancing, lasting powers of attorney, wills and family legal advice.”

One of the key tenets for Clapham & Collinge lies in striving for excellence within the profession and adopting innovative ways to resolve legal issues by finding solutions that meet the unique needs and goals of the individual or business. In offering a modern and comprehensive service, a high level of personal service is very much the company’s hallmark. Neale Grearson explained: “The opening of the North Walsham office was in response to customer demand and seemed a natural extension of our presence in that part of Norfolk.

“It follows on from the success of our Sheringham office and our move into a new office space last year. In North Walsham,

Teenage internationals benefit from strength and conditioning training

Two top young dodgeball players have been given the chance to further improve their chances on the world stage thanks to support from North Norfolk District Council and the council’s leisure operator Places for People. Lauren Hems and Holly Edmonds were part of the England Lions Ladies dodgeball team that travelled to the European Championships in Paris over the August Bank Holiday weekend. They have previously represented their country in April at the World Cup.

The duo, who both live in Briston and learnt the game during their time at Reepham High School and College, are completing a strength

and conditioning regime as part of the England Lions development programme. The women went through a physical assessment day and were given a rigorous exercise programme by England Dodgeball. The programme requires regular access to a fully equipped fitness facility.

North Norfolk District Council staff offered support and in collaboration with leisure operator Places for People arranged for free gym passes for both players at Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre. Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet Member for Leisure said “We are delighted to be able to provide support to two young ambitious international players who are in the process of building their sporting careers.

“Dodgeball is a fast paced, highly physical sport which requires specialist conditioning..” Holly Edmonds said “This support is helping us achieve our dreams. Being able to challenge

The Vikings' season got off to an encouraging start with a 33 - 5 win at Old Priorians on 3 September.

They were then scheduled to play Sudbury away and Chelmsford at home. Newcomers include winger Jordan Mustard from Swaffham and prop Johnny Masters, with Tom Knight and Harry Downing rejoining. Adam Couzens, Wayne Williams and Andreas Robertson have left whilst Tom Lomax will be away at University. Jake Duffield (pictured), previously a full back or fly half, is now playing at scrum half.

The Youth and Minis' season has begun with training Sunday mornings starting at 10am. Newcomers are welcome, no need to have played before - just turn up at Scottow. The Club encourages use of its amenities by the community, and there have been further recent improvements to the off field facilities. Starting on the 15 September a new community

Happisburgh Lifeboat Day & Fete

Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers have been working hard to organise this year’s Lifeboat Day & Fete.

The sun was shining, even though the wind was blowing. Hundreds of people turned out to support the Station. They enjoyed hog roast, a bar, games, tombolas and much, much more. They also had the opportunity to look over the Station’s two lifeboats and talk to the crew and RNLI Lifeguards and Coastguards. They were entertained by the Sheringham Shantymen. At 2pm both the Station’s lifeboats launched to put on a display for the crowds – unfortunately this was cut short due to the Coastguard Helicopter being diverted to an incident near Cromer. The two boats and RNLI Lifeguards put on a display for the public on the beach.

Stephen Mews, General Manager Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre, Sheringham said “It’s fantastic we can support two local athletes. It is often difficult to get funding in sports and we are happy to support any local sporting talent.”

England manager Johnathan Rudland said “It is vital for our players to have access to the best facilities to complete their strength and conditioning programme and it's fantastic that North Norfolk District Council and People for Places have been able to support some of our team in such a way.

“Both Lauren and Holly have the potential to be a part of the England squad for many years ahead and this kind of support will help them progress as young athletes.” You can follow England Lions Dodgeball on Facebook: www.facebook.com/englandlionsdodgeball/

choir will be meeting in the clubhouse on Thursday evenings from 7.15pm to 8.45pm. This sing along choir is open to everyone, no previous singing experience needed! Sessions are free until 27 October, from whence a £5 weekly fee is payable. More details at www.broadbeatchoir.co.uk. The Vikings next home game is versus Tring on 1 October, 3pm. kick off.

This year’s event was well attended and we would like to take the opportunity to thank all who attended and all our volunteers who made the day possible, which has enabled us to raise £6,000 for the RNLI over a period of just 4 hours.

At 4.30pm, as everybody was starting to clear up after the Fete, the Station was contacted by Humber Coastguard, with reports of an airbed floating out to see off Waxham. The Station’s Atlantic lifeboat, Joan Mary, launched with Cubitt Siely as helm, Christian Larter and Dave Cato as crew. They proceeded to Waxham, where they found an empty airbed 1½ miles off the coast. They commenced a search of the area and after an hour found nothing and as no one had been reported missing, the Coastguard stood the lifeboat down. They returned to Station at 6.30pm.

People should be aware of the dangers of inflatables, especially with offshore winds. All inflatables should be tethered to the beach and if you should lose an inflatable it is advisable to notify the Coastguard with a good description and location of where you lost it. life and no previous sea-going experience is needed to join the lifeboat crew. The RNLI provides fantastic training to turn ordinary people into lifesavers. By volunteering with the RNLI people will gain some great experience, knowledge and skills.

Happisburgh RNLI are always looking for new volunteers to help run the lifesaving service. If you are aged 17 or over, physically fit, work or live within 10 minutes of the lifeboat station and eager to join a lifesaving organisation then please come by and say hello.

Volunteers meet every Sunday morning at 9am and Tuesday evenings at 7pm for their weekly training exercises.
