Aylsham’s Blooming Lovely
When Steve Downes, columnist and content editor at the EDP, visited Aylsham to judge the annual Aylsham in Bloom’s Traders’ Competitions, he was faced with a difficult task. Not only did he have to choose an overall winner for the best external floral display, he also had to select the winner for the Inside Out Competition which is for the best external floral display that reflects the business inside the building. The Unicorn’s floriferous contribution (including tomatoes) won the Floral Competition. Susan Frazer accepted the plaque on behalf of the team. Richard’s Hair Design was Runner Up with The Dog Stop and Broadland Consultants receiving Highly Commended certificates for their displays. Johnny Payne and Jason Gibbons at Coxfords Butchers were very pleased to receive their Inside Out award with a Peppa Pig flower arrangement adding to the overall display. They just pipped Runner Up Bonds Fish and Chip shop’s inventive home crafted sea scape. The Ex-Servicemen’s Club and Budgens received Coxfords Butchers Highly Commended for their first time efforts.
Many of the displays are there all summer during opening hours although some soon retreated inside as they are not weather proof. Some of the displays were out just for the day. Steve was impressed by the efforts being made to make the town look so inviting and the local businesses participating in the competitions all helps to bring the community together and make Aylsham such a pleasant place. Aylsham in Bloom is part of the Aylsham Community Partnership, a registered charity. For more information visit www.aylshaminbloom.weebly.com

Happisburgh Fete and Lifeboat Day
Early in the morning on Sunday 5 August, Station members and friends went into action to prepare for the annual Fete and Lifeboat Day. Everyone worked hard to get everything set up in the hot morning sun. But come midday everything was ready and the fete was opened and hundreds of people swarmed onto the site, enjoying the BBQ, beer tent, stalls, cakes, teas, games, raffle, tombola and RNLI Shop and lots more. Music was provided by ‘The Shambolics’.
There was an opportunity to meet the lifeboat crew, the Community Safety Team, the RNLI’s Face to Face team, the Coastguards and the Newfoundland Rescue Dogs and then watch displays by Happisburgh’s lifeboats - the Atlantic 85 ‘Howard Bell’ and the D Class, ‘Russell Pickering’ and Cromer’s Tamar, ‘Lester’ and the Newfoundland Rescue Dogs.
The weather for this special day couldn’t have been better and there was
a large crowd assembled on the slipway to watch the displays. The Newfoundland Rescue Dogs are now a firm favourite with the spectators.
As the lifeboats were returning to Station, after the exercise, the crew were made aware of a jet skier who had fallen from his craft just south of the Station. The Station’s D Class, ‘Russell Pickering’ was re-launched at 4pm with Christian Larter as helm, Jake Munday, Martin Gibbs and Sean Furguson as crew. It arrived on scene within minutes to find a 43 yr old male who had made his own way to shore, suffering chest and ankle pain. He was assessed by the crew, who contacted the Coastguard for assistance. The casualty was moved to Cart Gap Lifeboat Station where he was monitored until the arrival of the Ambulance, which transported him to A & E. This was the first call-out for Happisburgh Station this year.
The Fete raised over £8000 on the day to enable the Station to carry on its work of saving lives at sea. We would like to thank everyone who attended and gave generously and all the volunteers who helped make the day such a success.

OUR AIM AT RNLI IS TO ALWAYS PUT LIFE FIRST
RIP CURRENTS
Rips are strong currents that can quickly take swimmers from the shallows out beyond their depth. Lifeguards will show you where you can avoid rips but if you do get caught in one: stay calm – don’t panic if you can stand, wade don’t swim keep hold of your board or inflatable to help you float raise your hand and shout for help never try to swim directly against the rip or you’ll get exhausted swim parallel to the beach until free of the rip, then make for shore if you see anyone else in trouble, alert the lifeguards or call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
TIDES A beach can seem like a vast playground, but the tide can come in surprisingly quickly. Many lifeboat and lifeguard rescues are to people getting cut off by the rising water. To prevent this happening to you, get local tidal information from the Harbour Master or the Tourist Information
Centre. Always keep a look out for the direction of the tide while on the beach. Just be aware ... and if in doubt, move out!
SWIMMING, SURFING AND BODYBOARDING Surfing GB is the national governing body for surfing and bodyboarding. For further information, accredited training centres and recognised schools visit surfinggb.com or contact 07711 263584.
STAYING SAFE
Do: follow the advice of the lifeguards & wear your leash so you don’t lose your board Do: check your equipment for damage before use Do: bodyboard between the red and yellow flags Do: surf, between the black and white flags Do: consider other water users Do: learn surf etiquette and rights of way. Don’t: ditch your board – it will keep you afloat in an emergency and make you easier to find Don’t: go alone Don’t: go in if the conditions are above your capability. Going the Distance for Local Hospice
Walking around 20 miles a day, for six days is a mammoth challenge regardless of the weather, but when Ray Stevens, a 71-year-old man from Middleton, started planning his challenge, he did not anticipate walking in the recent heatwave
conditions. This did not deter him from completing his walk from his home across the county all the way to Mundesley and then back along the beautiful Norfolk coast.
The walk took him through Gayton, Litcham, Bawdeswell and North Walsham to Mundesley. He then made this journey back through Cromer, Sheringham, Wells-Next-The-Sea and Brancaster to Hunstanton and then onto Dersingham and back to Middleton. He spent the nights at B&Bs and met lots of very supportive people on his journey. Ray took on the challenge to fundraise for The Norfolk Hospice after recovering from cancer four years ago and a twisted bowel last year. He wanted to help those who are less fortunate than himself. He originally set out to raise £2000 for the hospice but smashed his target early on in his fundraising and has now raised £4438.80, over double the amount!
John Garrett, Director of Finance and Fundraising at the Hospice said “We appreciate every effort
made by supporters to raise money to enable us to continue to care for people from communities in the West and North of Norfolk. For Ray to have walked over 120 miles in six days, bearing in mind his age and background (and the weather), and to have raised the amount he did must rank him among one of the greatest achievements on our behalf that we have seen this year.”
Raymond said “I would just like to thank everyone who has sponsored me. Without them I wouldn’t have raised the amount we have.”
The Norfolk Hospice relies on the public to fund almost 70% of the care it provides to local people. Taking on a personal challenge is a great way for people to support the Hillington based charity. From walking like Ray to climbing mountains, running a marathon or simply giving up a luxury for a month, there is a challenge for everyone. If you would like to take on a personal challenge to raise funds, please call the fundraising team on 01485 601701.
BeachLife outreach returns to Sheringham in August
Preparations are underway for this year's BeachLife activity outreach on Sheringham's cliff top and beach next month. Bumper crowds are expected, and there is no charge to join in the fun.
BeachLife is a joint venture by the churches in Sheringham, aimed at engaging with local youngsters, as well as holidaymakers, and this will be its seventh summer. It will run from Tuesday August 28 to Friday 31. The event is open to all ages from toddlers up to 17.
Daily activities will start with the “Beach Special” at 10.30am every day except Friday, where all ages come together at the cliff-top marquee on The Leas for music, games, drama and fun, and to introduce the day’s theme, which this year is Mega-Makers. The children and young people then split into age-groups for their “Going Deeper” sessions to explore that day’s theme in more depth before breaking for lunch. On the Friday, the morning starts at 10.30am with the Going Deeper sessions.
The afternoons and evenings will include beach games and sports, giant inflatables, a family picnic, junk modelling, the tide fight with chips, a ‘Sheropoly’ challenge around the town, and swimming at Splash. “This has become one of the major events in the town's calendar” said
Peter Skivington, one of the organisers. “Not only does this provide an opportunity for the churches to engage with local youngsters, but we provide a great week for visitors as well. We already have people asking when next year's BeachLife is so that they can plan their holidays to Sheringham”.
Those wishing to attend can download a form from www.sheringhambeachlife.co.uk and bring it with them to save time on the day.
The website also gives more information about the event and contact details. Alternatively, although anyone can just come along and register on the morning, from 10.15am. Photos from last year’s BeachLife are courtesy of Gareth Gabriel https://digitalink.media/
Summer fun at The Museum of the Broads
The long sunny days are upon us and everyone is in the holiday mood! Why not spend some time this month in Stalham at the Museum of the Broads.
The schools are out! If you are looking for something to entertain the children, then Stalham is the place to be. Not only is the Windmill trail taking place around the town, for a bit of on foot mooching, but the Museum has trails, interactives, a couple of play boats and an enviable picnic spot by the river.
The Victorian steam launch, Falcon, - recently described on Trip Advisor as the Best Broads Tour available - will be operating Sun to Fri in August. Toot toot.
August marks 104 years since Britain entered the First World War, and the Museum has a great exhibition and film looking at how war affected people living in your area. The stories of local people both on the front and at home are fascinating, so give it a whirl. Finally, if you have never seen Barton Broad or a Sailing Regatta, the Museum has a fab way of watching. Bank holiday Sunday and Monday, travel by steam boat to and from Barton Regatta to the Punt club pontoon on Barton Broad, watch the sailing, and have a nice piece of cake to boot!
It’s all going on so why not #makeitstalham this August. Open Sunday to Friday 10am to 4.30pm. Museum of the Broads, The Poor’s Staithe, Stalham, NR12 9DA, www.museumofthebroads.org.uk

GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY YIELDS FUNDS FOR CHARITY
When Paul and Christine Damen recently celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in Paston, they requested that guests not bring presents but donate to local charity.
As a result, ÂŁ155 was raised for the East Anglian Air Ambulance and ÂŁ175 for the Mundesley Independent Volunteer Lifeboat. Mundesley Inshore Lifeboat is one of over 35 independent lifeboat stations nationally (ie not affiliated to the RNLI), being one of four within the county of Norfolk. It has ‘Declared Facility’ status, which means that HM Coastguard will call the lifeboat and crew to

Goats on a Slope now have their own merchandise

Local artist’s work to adorn range of souvenirs honouring popular Bagots
North Norfolk’s famous herd of Bagot goats are now the stars of their own merchandise.
The popular goats, who spend the summer on habitatmanagement duty on the cliff at Cromer, have proved to be a popular draw for tourists – and fans can now take home some souvenirs of the herd.
Artist Ian Richardson, left, and NNDC Animal Control officer Mark Frosdick with some of the new merchandise
The Goats on a Slope range of goodies, which include mugs, tea-towels, ceramic fridge magnets, mounted prints, postcards, key rings and coasters, all feature original artwork by Ian Richardson, a North Norfolk District Council employee who has what until recently was a hidden talent for drawing.
“I did panic when I was first asked to do this as no one really knew what kind of design was required and it was all a bit overwhelming. I do art mainly as a hobby!” Ian said.
“I tried a host of different designs before having an epiphany at 5.30am at my breakfast table of how the goats should look.
“It is so exciting to see my designs on items and it is a dream come true for me. I’m proud to be a part of the Goats on a Slope project.”
The range was officially launched on Norfolk Day 27 July 27 at the North Norfolk Information Centre in Cromer when Ian was on hand to
materials rather than grass, and that helps keep plant growth across the area under control.
It has also negated the need for North Norfolk District Council to spend taxpayers’ money on keeping the cliff in good order.
As well as being popular with locals and tourists, the nine nannies and 10 kids carry out an important habitat-management role. In the past, the cliff area has become overgrown, leading to a problem with litter embedded and snagged in bushes. The Bagot goats graze on rough

Pictured is Julia - she came in with a nasty rear right leg injury, in fact there wasn't much left and the bone was jutting out so she was straight away admitted to Westover Vets where it was successfully amputated. With pain relief & antibiotics she is recovering well and on her check-up visit, the vets were pleased how well it had healed in such a short space of time. It's very neat and doesn't stop her moving about quickly! She would not be safe to be released back into the wild in case she suffered another leg injury that would make her unable to move. So when she's completely recovered she will be in an enclosed area where I will be able to monitor her. Special thanks go to Julia's finders who generously paid for all her treatment. Thanks to a Go-Fund-Me page I have purchased two vital pieces of equipment - an incubator & a nebuliser. I still have abandoned hoglets coming in - it's certainly been my busiest summer to date!
Saving Sighthounds
Grace on arrival
There has been a lot of publicity in recent years highlighting the plight of greyhounds and their treatment at the hands of the racing industry. Norfolk Greyhound Rescue (NGR) is one charity dedicated to rescuing these dogs as well as other sighthounds such as whippets and lurchers. They rescue dogs from Ireland where animal cruelty legislation and attitudes are less favourable to these dogs than over here.
These dogs are usually those who don’t make the cut for racing as well as those who are injured or puppies that are surplus to requirements. They risk being abandoned or worse – destroyed inhumanely by shooting or drowning. Lurchers are frequently left behind when travellers move on.
NGR differs from other charities in that dogs are not accepted directly from the racing industry but from Irish rescue charities and placed in foster homes to be assessed and
8

socialised. They are then ready to be matched directly with their forever homes and do not have to spend prolonged periods in kennels. This reduces the number of dogs returned as unsuitable as they have already been matched for temperament rather than chosen just for looks.
For more information on the organisation, upcoming events, adopting a sighthound and how to donate please go to the NGR website at www.norfolkgreyhoundrescue.co.uk call 07470 931758 or follow on Facebook or Twitter.
Hayley Pattrick and her husband Richard have run the charity for 3 years and in that time have rescued and rehomed 400 dogs as far afield as Kent to the north of Scotland. All prospective homes are checked and adopters pay £150 for their dog to help pay for vets bills, vaccinations and transport. It actually costs as much as £265 to Elite transport each dog from Ireland and prepare them for homing.
NGR are in constant need of funds to continue their vital work and hold regular events to raise money as well as running an online shop where all profits go to the charity.

As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offfers fers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT TMENT T, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offfer fer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norfolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. HELPING THE DISABLED OVERSEAS
Rotary in Aylsham has recently launched a new initiative with Physionet, an organisation that helps the disabled overseas.
Physionet is an all-volunteer charity collecting redundant physiotherapy and mobility items from around the UK and distributing them in 40ft long containers to developing countries around the world. The organisation has been given the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.
In the first 10 years of operation the charity
Making a Will – The importance of having an up-to-date Will.
sent over 5,400 items of special needs equipment, approximately 5,300 wheelchairs and some 2,500 mobility items to Eastern Europe , African counties , India, Sri Lanka and the Pacific Islands. By weight, some 2,500 tons of equipment was saved from scrap. Rotary in Aylsham has agreed to identify and collect items locally and elsewhere in North Norfolk.
Already, more than 50 items have been dispatched. These are collected regionally and then transported to headquarters in North Yorkshire, where items are cleaned, repaired and renovated as necessary before despatch
The simple definition of a Will is a legal document that sets out your wishes regarding the distribution of your money, possessions and property (known as your ‘estate’) after death. Having a Will in place gives you peace of mind and legal assurance that your wishes will be carried out once you are gone so that you know your family will be taken care of.
Although it is often difficult to think about the inevitable, having a Will in place is arguably one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your family. Not only can a will legally protect your partner, children and assets, it can also spell out exactly how you would like things handled after you have passed on. It is reported that 1 in 3 people in the UK die without having a written Will in place to protect their family and assets. If you die without a Will your estate will be distributed in accordance with the Intestacy Rules. These rules are old fashioned and can lead to disappointment and injustice.
Did you know? • If you die without a Will your husband, wife or civil partner may not automatically inherit everything; they may have to share your estate with other relatives. • If you are not married or in a civil partnership your partner is not automatically entitled to anything. • If you separate from your spouse, they will stand to receive at least a proportion of your estate if you die before your divorce is fully finalised. • Marriage or entering a civil partnership will revoke your Will. Writing a Will does not need to be a lengthy process, after the first appointment, initial draft Wills are usually sent out within 10 working days. Once you are happy with the Will, a further appointment is made for the Will to be signed and witnessed. It is then usual for the legal provider to hold a copy of the Will until it is needed by the family.
Today, blended families are more common than ever, with a growing number of step-families and blended families who are raising children from their previous and present marriages. Consequently, it’s important to regularly review your Will to ensure it’s still fit for purpose and reflects your current personal circumstances.
We encourage our clients to review their Wills every three to five years, both to ensure that their wishes are up to date but also to consider changes in the law or tax system which may have a personal impact. By way of recent example, in April 2017 the government brought in a new Inheritance Tax (IHT) allowance. This allowance is essentially available on death to anyone leaving a residential property to their children, and is excellent news for many individuals and families who will see huge tax savings as a result. However, the legislation is complex and Wills made prior to 2017 are often drafted in such a way as to prohibit or limit access to this new allowance. A simple thing such as an age contingency on a gift to children or grandchildren, i.e. for my grandchildren at the age of 18, could mean the loss of this allowance.
If you are considering making a Will or would like a member of our team to have a look at your current Will[s] and advise you about any changes you should consider making.

MP DEMANDS END TO ‘HOLIDAY HOMES’ TAX LOOPHOLE AS NORTH NORFOLK LOSES £1.8 MILLION
Norman Lamb is demanding an end to a loophole which allows homeowners to avoid paying tax on second homes, after new figures revealed that it is costing North Norfolk District Council a staggering £1.8 million this year alone.
In England, any property that is ‘available to let’ for 140 days or more per year can be registered as a holiday business. Holiday homes with a rateable value of less than £12,000 are eligible to receive 100% small business rate relief, meaning that the owners do not have to pay any tax on the property. North Norfolk District Council revealed that 1,302 second-
home holiday lets are claiming 100% small business rate relief in 2018-19 – at a cost of £1,873,998. The figures were disclosed following a freedom of information request from Norman Lamb MP.
While many of these properties will be genuine holiday homes, the ease of registering a property as a holiday home and claiming full business rate relief leaves the system open to abuse by second-home owners who are seeking to avoid paying council tax. Commenting on the figures, Norman Lamb MP said “It is completely unreasonable that hard-pressed residents in North Norfolk are paying higher council tax bills to fund vital local services, while some owners of second homes that are registered as holiday lets are getting away with paying no tax at all on that property.
“This loophole is costing North Norfolk District Council a staggering sum of money which could be spent on social care, children’s services or other essential support. “It is far too easy for second-home owners to bend the rules under the current system. This is particularly galling in a low-wage economy like North Norfolk, where it is critically important that everyone is making a fair contribution. We cannot afford a system that is open to abuse in this way, which is why these rules need reform as a matter of urgency.”

Non-surgical face lift available at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic
Is it possible to have great results and a face lift without surgery? “If you had asked this question a few years ago- I would have said no. But today, in 2018, I can say yes” says Dr Gheyi, Medical Director at the Coltishall Clinic.
A face lift only tightens loose skin, it does not replace lost volume from the face which is probably the most important component of facial ageing. It will not improve skin texture or tone either. We are increasingly using volumisation of the face in addition to skin tightening which if performed without volume restoration gives a tight but not a natural look. I prefer a natural look for my patients.
We are very impressed by the latest offering in the restylane range Restylane Volyme. “I have not seen anything like it”. He says. It lifts your face in an instant and the results are great. It is being hailed as something of a breakthrough. It is performed under local anaesthesia and takes about 30 minutes. You can then walk away with a rejuvenated natural look and years taken off your face. As it is a deeper filler, there is usually no bruising or redness.
It is an alternative to permanent cheek implants which can be problematic as they sometimes cause infection or move, creating asymmetry in the face. Although fat can be used to transfer into the face and add volume, deep filler is the only method available to achieve a similar result without the need for surgery.
Restylane Volyme is the brand name for an injectable form of hyaluronic acid specially formulated for facial contouring. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar that is found in the connective tissue of our skin and along with collagen forms the building blocks of healthy tissues. As it is totally natural component of our skin, no allergy test is required. Restylane is
the most popular facial filler in the world today and has been used in over 15 million treatments. It has a proven safety record. The result from the treatment is immediate and can last more than a year.
It is different from other fillers which are commonly uses to soften lines and wrinkles. Restylane Volyme is injected in a deeper plane to achieve a lifting and filling effect on cheeks and chin.
Another exciting development is the use of botox to achieve a defined outline of the jaw. The so called ‘Nefertiti lift’. He also uses these for eyebrow lift to correct drooping eyebrows. A combination of these procedures and other non surgical tools is now capable of producing remarkable results without going under the knife. Everyone is not suitable for these procedures and as we each have our unique features and requirements we tailor our treatments and pick and choose best options from our increasing number of non-surgical treatments.

Older Generation Celebrate Norfolk Day with Ambitious New Arts Commission
Older people from across the county celebrated all things Norfolk on this year’s Norfolk Day, by visiting the stunning nature reserve at Cley, North Norfolk to gather inspiration for an ambitious new commission based on the Norfolk landscape, run by rural arts charity Creative Arts East.
Creative Arts East have been running their unique, flagship programme ‘Our Day Out’ – regular music & dance workshops for older people - for over 2 years, and this is their most ambitious commission to date. They have commissioned acclaimed local artists Chappell to work with the ‘Our Day Out’ participants, to create a movement and sound piece informed by stimuli from their trip to Cley on Friday 27 July.
This commission champions all things Norfolk – it celebrates the beauty of Norfolk’s coastal landscape, it employs and encourages local arts practitioners to develop their skills in working with vulnerable older people (including those living with dementia and other health conditions), and it enables older residents to share what Norfolk means to them and be inspired creatively by the county in which they live. The found sounds and sights collected from the outing on Norfolk Day will inspire and shape the forthcoming workshops that Glass House Dance and Les Chappell will hold twice-monthly in Dereham, Attleborough, Special Reunion Event at the RAF Radar Museum and RRH
The RAF RADAR Museum is trying to trace former staff members of the base to invite them to a reunion event at the Radar Museum.
The RAF Air Defence Radar Museum and RRH Neatishead are hosting a reunion event on Sunday 23 September 10am – 4.30pm for all former staff, their families and their friends as our contribution to
RAF100.
Thetford, Watton, North Walsham and Wells-nextthe-Sea. Elly Wilson, the Deputy Director at Creative Arts East said“We’ve been championing work and research around arts, health and wellbeing for many years and we’re so pleased that the ‘Our Day Out’ One of the ‘Our Day Out’ participants, programme has allowed us taken by photographer Anita Staff to break down as many barriers that older people experience to participation in the arts as possible, and measure the impact this has on people’s lives, including increasing individuals’ wellbeing and decreasing social isolation. This commission is a great opportunity for us to encourage home-grown creativity by both supporting local artists and engaging Norfolk’s older generation in creative activities.”
The special series of workshops will culminate in a celebration of the music and movement they have created with over 100 older people who are part of the programme returning to the Cley Wildlife Centre, sharing their take on Norfolk landscapes on the 31st October. Anyone wishing to find out more about the project and how to get involved should contact Creative Arts East on 01953 713390.
An exciting day is planned which will comprise tours of the whole site, including the underground bunker and museum. Outside there will be music, tombola, special exhibits, talks and activities for all the family. The event is strictly ticketed to comply with our alcohol licence. Tickets are available online only and can be bought by following the link on a first come first served basis.

‘Show us your skeletons!’
Fiona Hewitt, Director, Hayes + Storr
If there is one thing we do very well in the UK it is royal pageantry, and the wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle did not disappoint. The event had something to please all the crowds, from ardent royalists to celebrity spotters and those who just like to watch a good parade.

Trimingham Church Open Weekend
Trimingham Church Open Weekend is on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 August from 10am - 3.30pm. There will be a varied selection of crafts, tombola, bran tub, village history and refreshments including light lunches etc in the Pilgrim Shelter opposite.
Songs of Praise will be on Sunday 4pm. A warm welcome to everyone. Raising funds for the Church
Your legal matters in safe hands Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle a whole range of legal matters with care and professionalism.
Of course, any royal wedding gives rise to months of allegation and gossip in the tabloid press, and this was no exception. Without even trying to pay attention, it was hard to avoid the embarrassing revelations about Ms Markle’s family members: her difficult relationship with her father; the collusion of her half-sister with paparazzi photographers; her half-brother’s open letter to the Prince warning him against the marriage; and the disappointment of the siblings that they weren’t invited to attend. But stories of this sort are nothing new, and we don’t have to delve very far into the history of the royals themselves to find some ‘family dysfunctionality’. In the relatively recent past we have seen the abdication of a king in connection with his marriage to an unpopular American divorcee, alleged scandals surrounding Princess Margaret, and of course the divorce of Prince Harry’s own parents and revelations about their unhappy marriage and extra-marital affairs. We are told that Queen Victoria’s children fell out with her as well as with each other, and further back still, the Prince can claim descent from some who not only disliked their relatives but had them put to death. In fact, if we are completely honest, which of us doesn’t have the odd skeleton in the family cupboard? Even if family relations currently seem harmonious, a little time spent researching the family tree will often turn up something embarrassing.
When clients come to see us to prepare Wills, they are often very reticent about family problems. Understandably, people are reluctant to disclose details of, for example, squabbling children,
ungrateful grandchildren or long-standing rifts with siblings. However, it is very important that we are given all the relevant background information, so we can advise you properly about the distribution of your estate, the possibility of challenges, and what can be done to prevent them. A disgruntled relative may be able to make a claim against the estate if they are left out of a Will or receive less than they were expecting. If you tell us who they are and why they are being treated differently, we can minimise the chances of them succeeding. Detailed attendance notes on our files, confirmation of your mental capacity and confidential letters explaining your actions will all help. No doubt the new Duchess of Sussex’s family issues will soon be forgotten by the tabloids in favour of more up to date scandal. Funding confirmed for third year of ground-breaking sports project Cabinet hears that North Norfolk District Council scheme is going from strength to strength
The ground-breaking Sporting Centre of Excellence (SCOE) scheme run by North Norfolk District Council has been guaranteed funding for a third year. The unique and successful programme has already seen more than 150 young people attend coaching sessions during its first two years. SCOE was set up with the aim of providing young people with top-quality coaching in endurance running, cricket, netball and hockey, and at excellent facilities. These children might not otherwise have had access to such good coaching or facilities.
NNDC’s Cabinet heard that the first two years of the project had seen all the participants improve. All of North Norfolk’s secondary schools have been represented in the scheme, which uses the facilities at Gresham’s School, Holt. Sport England has hailed the project as being innovative and demonstrating best practice. Many of the young people, aged 11-14, have subsequently been selected to represent Norfolk in their chosen sports, and some have competed at a national standard:
• Ten athletes have been selected to represent Norfolk in cross-country, with one girl finishing third in the national cross-country championships, out of more than 400 competitors. • Three boys in the cricket programme have reached county standard and have been invited to the county squad and training sessions.
2018 NORTHREPPS BRANCH OF THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION REVIVAL
There has been much interest and support for our Branch which is very encouraging, and a date has now been set for our first meeting, 3 September at Northrepps Cottage Country Hotel at 7.30pm, when members will be delighted to extend a warm wel-
• Most of the netball players have been invited to join high-standard netball teams. • One boy has been identified as being a naturally-gifted hockey goalkeeper. Specific goalkeeper coaching has been arranged for him and he has been invited to join a top Norfolk hockey club. Cllr Becky Palmer, NNDC Portfolio Holder for Leisure, told the meeting “It’s the only one in the country of its kind and I think it’s been a remarkable scheme over the two years that we’ve had so far.” Cllr John Lee, Leader of NNDC and of the Conservative Group, added “I have enjoyed presenting certificates to runners, cricketers, netball players and hockey players over the past couple of months since I became Leader. The vast majority of these children wouldn’t otherwise have had the chance to use these facilities.”
The project was originally launched by former gymnast and Commonwealth Games gold-medal winner Craig Heap. The Cabinet has agreed to allocate funding of £20,000 towards the scheme’s third year. After the meeting, Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of the Lib Dem Group at NNDC, said “I’m obviously delighted that the council has decided to continue to support this fantastic initiative, which helps so many of our young people to realise their sporting potential.”
Cllr John Rest, Leader of the Independent Group at NNDC, said “It is perfect timing to secure funding for the sports stars and athletes of the future.”

We have held one excellent Branch social event, a Garden Party which was hosted by our President and his wife, to whom we extend our many thanks. It is with much pride and honour that our Branch Standard will be at the GP90 event this month, and it has been arranged for Colin Chambers a member of
North Walsham Branch, to lay our Branch Wreath at the Menin Gate. We have been able to write our own Branch message on the wreath, and this has been undertaken by our President. Later on, our Branch will be taking part in Northrepps Village Commemoration of WW1. For further information please contact Lorna Branch Chairman on 01263 579633.

County Ladies Captain Praises Mundesley’s Membership Drive
Initiatives to attract more women golfers to Mundesley Golf Club have been praised by the Norfolk county ladies’ captain after she visited the north Norfolk course.
Sammy Martin discussed with the club’s ladies’ captain, Sue Symmons, Mundesley’s current drive to attract more ladies, girls and juniors into the game and to play at county level.
Afterwards Miss Martin, a 2-handicapper who plays at Royal Norwich, said: “I was really impressed by the positivity and enthusiasm of the Mundesley Ladies, as well as the warm welcome they gave me.

“Norfolk Ladies Golf is also encouraging club golfers to get involved at county level. We have competitions for all abilities – and whatever your handicap I would urge people to take part in county events, because they return to their home club all the stronger.”

James, who plays off a handicap of five, won with two gross scores of 69 and 77 on a weekend where rain and wind made conditions on the Sunday difficult. Norfolk county president Graham Turner was second. The handicap championship was won by Bob Peaker from Aylsham, who played off 20, with net scores of 71 and 63. The retired teacher and lecturer has worked at high schools in Sheringham and North Walsham and was an England Schools rugby coach.
A teenager with dreams of being a professional golfer has won his home club’s top trophy.
James Lester, 18, lifted Mundesley Golf Club’s scratch championship, six shots clear of his nearest challenger.

For both champions it was the first time they had landed the championship cups.

“It is a dream come true, because they only accept about 20 people a year. We learn coaching, sports science, training and management – all sorts of things useful for a club pro – but I would love to be a playing pro,” said the former North Walsham High School and Paston College student.
He started playing aged 10 – when his mum went to buy some cricket gear but the shop had run out so she bought golf clubs instead. “I started playing and loved it- just the challenge of hitting the ball well.”
Club pro Ryan Pudney, who gave James his first lessons, said “James’ has won the club’s Blue Riband event and his success is a deserved
Tenth anniversary Holt Festival hailed a great success
Holt Festival celebrated its 10th anniversary with a week of some of the most varied shows since it began.
The sun shone throughout the week and there were more highlights than can be mentioned here. Two of the art exhibitions, John Hurt as Artist and Blithe Spirit, attracted attention from far and wide, really putting Holt onto the nation’s radar with appearances on national TV and radio as well as articles in The Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Lady and others. Household names from TV and radio were in town to interview guest speakers and there were wonderful performances in the Theatre in the Woods from Tom Baxter Band, Leo Sayer and the amazing Jasper Carrott with his all-star band.
Guest artistic director Stash Kirkbride said ‘The Holt Festival's 10th anniversary year received resounding praise. Not only from our audiences, but also from all who took part, both in the limelight of the stage and from those working behind the scenes.’

To have seen the programme come to life over the sun drenched summer days and nights in North Norfolk's jewel that is Holt, was something I will cherish for many years. We presented over 25 high profile events of national and international standing. With my brief tenure as Artistic Director, I have been able to turn over the creative soil, leaving it in perfect shape for Anwen Hurt to take it to the next level. Anwen is passionate about the arts, and her community, and being resident in Holt she will be able to have such a hands on approach to a festival she has admired and been a part of with her late husband John Hurt throughout its history”.
