Centre. Always keep a look out for the direction of the tide while on the beach. Just be aware ... and if in doubt, move out!

OUR AIM AT RNLI IS TO ALWAYS PUT LIFE FIRST

RIP CURRENTS

Rips are strong currents that can quickly take swimmers from the shallows out beyond their depth. Lifeguards will show you where you can avoid rips but if you do get caught in one: stay calm – don’t panic if you can stand, wade don’t swim keep hold of your board or inflatable to help you float raise your hand and shout for help never try to swim directly against the rip or you’ll get exhausted swim parallel to the beach until free of the rip, then make for shore if you see anyone else in trouble, alert the lifeguards or call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.

TIDES A beach can seem like a vast playground, but the tide can come in surprisingly quickly. Many lifeboat and lifeguard rescues are to people getting cut off by the rising water. To prevent this happening to you, get local tidal information from the Harbour Master or the Tourist Information

SWIMMING, SURFING AND BODYBOARDING Surfing GB is the national governing body for surfing and bodyboarding. For further information, accredited training centres and recognised schools visit surfinggb.com or contact 07711 263584.

STAYING SAFE

Do: follow the advice of the lifeguards & wear your leash so you don’t lose your board Do: check your equipment for damage before use Do: bodyboard between the red and yellow flags Do: surf, between the black and white flags Do: consider other water users Do: learn surf etiquette and rights of way. Don’t: ditch your board – it will keep you afloat in an emergency and make you easier to find Don’t: go alone Don’t: go in if the conditions are above your capability. FESTIVAL OWL TRAIL OWLS IN EVERY SHOP WINDOW

Celebrating 10 years of The Holt Festival with owls - an exciting initiative instigated by FALCON, funded by Holt Festival in conjunction with Holt Primary School.

This year it is 10 years since the Holt Festival was first launched and as a way of celebrating this anniversary, every child at Holt Primary School has created a (second) owl trail, spreading throughout the town. Under the guidance of local artist and workshop leader Jessica Perry, each child at the Primary School has made a small characterful, perching

Visit Mannington Hall on Norfolk Day

Along with many other local tourist attractions, Mannington Estate will join in the celebrations for the first Norfolk Day (27th July) by offering half price entry into the gardens for the day. The hall will be open with displays showing the Walpole families connections with Norfolk over the last five centuries.

Refreshments will be available from The Greedy Goose tearoom. # Mannington Hall has been in the Walpole family since the 18th century and has been open to the public as a key tourist attraction in Norfolk for the last 40 years. Visitors will be able to enjoy the beautiful gardens, explore the many habitats of the surrounding countryside including the meadows and board walks, and visit the medieval hall which is normally only open by appointment.

ADVENTURE WITH BLAKENEY ROWING CLUB

A great row between Wells and Blakeney took place on Tuesday 19 June. There was a morning gathering of rowers at the slipways near Wells Sailing Club. Crews from Blakeney Rowing Club brought their beautiful skiffs Hoi Larntan and Bluejacket, King’s Lynn rowers brought their fine vessel, Ouse Rewet, and the Marconi Club from Essex came with their gig Elettra.

During the journey over the water, these four were surrounded by kayaks and canoes as well as a single sculling boat.

This really was an adventure row. The route traversed the narrow, winding marsh channels which called for varied rowing skills. Boats then emerged behind West Sands. A further half an hour pull brought the participants to Blakeney Point and a well-earned refreshment stop on the beach near the Lifeboat Station. The final stage took in the more familiar waters as far as the Carnser.

Thank you to organisers and towers, who made the event possible, and to all those in close attendance on the safety boats. It really was a brilliant event! Another such row is planned for later in the year.

There are some outstanding pictures and videos, taken by professional photographer Chris Taylor on the Blakeney Rowing Club website at crablakeney.wordpress.com. These should really whet your appetites to come and row with us.

Why not come along and try skiff rowing? No previous experience is needed, just a taste for adventure and fun. There is no need to take part in any of the race events. Social rowing is great too. You are entitled to three sample rows before deciding whether to join. Coaching is always on offer. If you are interested in experiencing the sheer enjoyment of rowing, contact Tom on 01263 761570. You can also follow club activities on Facebook. Let the adventure begin.

These will be displayed in all the shop or premises windows in Holt during the festival which takes place 21 29 July.

“We hope that this will help to bring together the wider community in a common celebration, and to draw visitors and locals alike around the town”.

Groups of older children have also made larger owls, to be displayed at St Andrew’s Church, Holt Library and elsewhere in town during Holt Festival Week.

Northrepps Branch of Royal British Legion Revival

There is no better time than this year, the 100 year Commemoration of WW1, to launch a revival of our branch, which was first formed in 1949, as now here in 2018, our membership has depleted. We are so determined to keep this country village branch thriving. It is not a requirement to have been a member of the Armed Forces to become a member of The Legion, as we welcome ex service personnel, individuals who support the Armed Forces, or indeed have family members or friends who are currently serving. By kind invitation of our neighbouring branch, Cromer, we were at Armed Forces Day on Saturday 30 June with our stand, in the Parish Hall, Cromer. This proved to be a great success and our thanks go to Cromer Branch, and Cromer Womens' Section, for their wonderful hospitality. Our branch meetings are held at Northrepps Country Cottage Hotel and we would like to welcome you. For further details and information, please contact our Branch Chairman Lorna Fish on 01263 579633.

North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust

The trust runs weekend afternoon pleasure trips along a one-mile stretch of the waterway, from Ebridge Mill Pond to Bacton Wood lock, when passengers can sit back and enjoy the peace and wildlife.

Oil painting by Chris Black of Ebridge lock before restoration Relatives of the late Nat Bircham, skipper in 1934 of The Ella, the last wherry to sail the North Walsham and Dilham Canal, take a trip on its new namesake, Ella II. Clockwise, from left: Christine Burns, granddaughter of Nat Bircham; Lilian Smith, Nat's daughter; Ivan Cane, chairman of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust; Graham Pressman, the trust's boating officer; Ed Cubitt, trust volunteer; Sally Blackburn, granddaughter; Jane Bryant, granddaughter; Pat Narracott, granddaughter

Water, water everywhere at canal open weekend Pouring was the operative word during the first day of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust's open weekend on Saturday, 2 June!

Not only was a pint of Woodeforde's Wherry ale poured over the bow of the Trust's new pleasure boat, Ella II, but it poured with rain for much of the day with flash flooding affecting the nearby town of North Walsham.

Happily the sun shone for the second day, drawing the crowds to picturesque Ebridge Mill pond to enjoy boat trips, canoeing, displays, food, drink and a chance to "gongoozle" - idly watch canal life. Undaunted by the first day's deluge, trust members and supporters dashed out of the marquee during a lull in the downpour to ceremonially launch Ella II. She has been named in honour of The Ella which, in 1934, was the last wherry to sail the 19th century canal before it fell into disuse and became choked with vegetation.

Proceeds from the trips are ploughed back into Trust projects and restoration work began during the open weekend on Ebridge lock, one of six locks along the canal which was once nearly nine miles long. For more information on the boat trips ring 07585 160772.

Talented artist Chris Black, who is vice chairman of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust, has painted Ebridge lock before restoration which is for sale at ÂŁ80. Proceeds will go towards restoration of the lock which has just begun. Anyone interested in buying the oil painting should contact the Trust via its website www.nwdct.org or Facebook page.

Lilian Smith, daughter of The Ella's skipper, Nat Bircham, poured a pint of Woodeforde's Wherry ale over Ella II to christen her, watched by four of Nat's granddaughters. The family then took a short boat trip along the canal which has been under restoration for more than a decade. Trust chairman Ivan Cane said "It was fantastic to be able to welcome the descendants of Nat Bircham to come and name Ella II in memory of that last wherry on this canal."

Northrepps Church Roof Restoration – almost there!

Following the theft of lead from the roof of St Mary's last summer, Northrepps Church needed to raise ÂŁ27,058 to restore the building.

A range of activities and fund raisers have been held to date and the Rev David Roper is now delighted to announce that funds are beginning to look healthy enough to instruct the contractor to begin the repairs before the winter causes further damage.

A massive ÂŁ6,039.07 was raised through our recent 'Open Gardens & Arts Weekend' with over 750 visitors exploring the colourful and inspiring gardens, enjoying the home-made refreshments, and purchasing from the local Norfolk artists displaying their wares at the village hall and in some of the gardens.

'Treasure Quest' (Radio Norfolk) called in at the 1953 Showman's Caravan parked in one garden and many people were entranced by the Gauge 1 model railway manned by rail enthusiasts from across Norfolk. The weather was kind and both days were well attended by happy and enthusiastic visitors - many thanks to one and all for making this possible!

Last month, Northrepps hosted a further two fund raising events - the 'Top Banana' gig in the village hall was a sell-out success and raised a further ÂŁ808 through the bar and the raffle whilst enjoying dancing to the sounds of the 70s, 80s and 90s and the 'Tea & Cake' event the following afternoon added a further ÂŁ712.20 to our funds. We await to hear how much is to be donated from Waitrose who kindly selected our roof fund to be one of their 'green token' local charities for May.

These events, combined with over £4000 donations from villagers, £7,500 from the insurers and a grant of £2000 from the Paul Bassham Charitable Trust now take our total to £21,069.52!! A superb effort from all ‌ now just £5,988.48 to go!"

Showtime at the Coronation Hall

‘Showtime at the Coronation Hall’ returns in August continuing the Mundesley tradition of over 30 years of summer, seaside entertainment. Working in partnership with Red Loft Theatre Company, this Coronation Hall project aims to help keep live music and theatre at the heart of Mundesley village and will see local professionals and rising stars treading the boards

with two new cabaret style shows. We will be delivering a first class experience to a dining audience of 100 per night - which is where we need your help. Coronation Hall is seeking volunteers who are able to give their time between 9-11 and 16-18 August, be it for a morning, afternoon, evening or more. We welcome individuals to help with tasks such as shopping, baking, food preparation, car parking, hall/table decoration, food/drink serving,

cleaning, raffle organisation, tidy-up and front of house duties. Volunteers will work as part of a team and most importantly, we hope, enjoy themselves. Overwhelmingly our 2017 volunteers said it was fun and a great way to meet neighbours and make new friends. There are comprehensive listings of all registered care services throughout Norfolk, plus checklists to help you ask the right questions when visiting services.

It can be downloaded from www.norfolk.gov.uk/careservices and is available in spoken word. “Finding a care service for yourself or a loved one that meets their needs and is affordable can be a daunting and unfamiliar task. This new Norfolk Your guide to care and support for adults has been compiled to help people understand the process and offer them reassurance at every step of their journey.”

Care Choices is the UK’s largest independent publisher for social care and adults with additional needs. It is also the largest publisher of care directories for local authorities in England.

Pictured is Biscuit, who had a nasty infection from a bite. With antibiotics it has at last cleared up, He looks a bit odd at the moment as the fur around his face needs to grow again and only time will tell if he has lost the sight in that eye.

July

The months have slipped by, it is now July. Two larks are soaring high in the sky, blue cornflowers are growing beside the stream, I could sit here all day and happily dream. A blue butterfly hovers and alights on my arm, in a moment she'll move, so I have to keep calm. I pick up my book, a grass snake slithers by, it's time to leave, and I give a sad sigh.

It's always a difficult decision this time of year about whether to admit a hedgehog into care as hoglets are now be being born & you could well be removing a mother from her brood.

An active hedgehog out during the day could be a mother searching for a quick meal before heading back to her nest, but an inactive hog laying outside in the daytime is most probably sick or injured and will need help straight away.

Wills Wills & LPAs LPAs –AM MUST UST H HAVE AVE

At Silver and Ward we pride ourselves in giving our clients peace of mind with our expert legal advice explained in plain English. We work extremely hard during our lives to provide for family and loved ones. However, the majority of us fail to ensure that continues if we become unwell, or when we pass away. So, how can you guarantee that?

(1) LPAs (Lasting Power of Attorney) – are a safety net for you and your loved ones if you were to be involved in an accident, or have a diagnosis leading to diminished mental capacity. It is incredibly important to have them in place no matter how old you are. As surprising as it sounds, your spouse, or partner, does not have any legal right to make health decisions on your behalf, or deal with your money and property if you are unable to.

(2) Wills – can help you to secure a future for those you leave behind. If you do not leave a Will the Law decides who will inherit your estate. This may not be what you want and it is unlikely to provide adequately for your family. A Will prepared by Silver and Ward can provide reassurance and peace of mind for you and your family and help reduce any risks and pitfalls that may arise in the future. We will write it in plain English to avoid any misunderstandings. We offffer fixed fees for Wills and LPAs so you know immediately how much it is going to cost and a FREE INITIAL APPOINTMENT. We can meet with you in your home, Nursing Home, or Hospital at no extra cost.

Agatha Christie, a Mundesley visitor?

Agatha Christie was a regular summer visitor to North Walsham in the 1930s, so it must be wondered if the world’s top selling author ever strolled along Mundesley beach plotting her next murder.

She may have even visited the Coronation Hall where her celebrated play, Murder on the Nile, is being performed by the Mundesley

pictures taken in the writer’s favourite garden summerhouse.

Originally a private house called The Shrubs, The Beechwood Hotel is where the author spent many of the warmer months incognito, using the surname Mallowan, while writing her latest creation. The Mundesley Players production of the worldfamous Agatha Christie play Murder on the Nile is set aboard a paddle steamer with a group of memorable passengers who all seem to have something to hide. Kay Ridgeway is blessed with beauty, wealth and a new husband, yet her idyllic honeymoon trip is shattered by a shocking and brutal murder. Christie twists and turns the plot, in this tense and audacious conspiracy.

Tickets for Murder on the Nile cost just £8 and are on sale from Monday 9 July from Jupe in Station Road Mundesley or call 07503 297602.

Big Society Fund hands out another £51,000

North Norfolk District Council scheme continues to support community groups and charities

A gym, a brass band and the Benjamin Foundation are among the groups and projects to be given a boost with funding from North Norfolk District Council’s Big Society Fund (BSF). The BSF has made the following six awards in its latest round of funding:

• Benjamin Foundation (£10,000) – contribution towards the cost of materials, equipment and personal protective clothing needed for Ben’s Workforce Handyman Service and the training courses for young people to develop the skills required to be used within the service • Fakenham Town Band (£7,327.14) – to purchase two Besson cornets, a tenor horn, a baritone horn and a set of cymbals • Friends of Langham Dome (£5,000) – contribution towards works to enable a replica Spitfire to be installed and displayed outside Langham Dome • Lighthouse Charity Trust, Sheringham (£15,000) – contribution to refurbishment

and equipment for the Men's Shed project • Stalham Community Gym (£4,170.76) – to purchase additional gym equipment for new classes • Wood Norton Village Hall (£9,792) – to purchase play equipment, including a swing set and a spinning-top roundabout The six grants combined are worth £51,289.90. The Lighthouse Charity Trust has bought the former St John Ambulance Hall in Wyndham Street, Sheringham, to turn it into a Men’s Shed in a bid to combat isolation and loneliness amongst men. The BSF grant will go towards its refurbishment and equipment. “We are delighted that the council shares our concern to tackle loneliness and isolation, which is especially acute in rural areas,” said the charity’s Peter Farley. “It is a tremendously encouraging boost to our determination to do all we can to eliminate the suffering such deprivation causes.” Cllr John Lee, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and Leader of the Conservative Group at

NNDC, said “Being Chairman of the Big Society Fund panel is by far the best part of my job. To be able to support our communities with these grants is an absolute pleasure. “I’d encourage any groups across the district to get in touch to see if we can support them. Being able to provide funding directly into our local parishes to help improve people’s lives in even the smallest way is extremely pleasing.” Since the fund started in 2012, NNDC has awarded more than £1.6m to 219 community projects. Completed applications to be submitted to the September panel need to be received by July 31.

For more information about the application process, visit www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/tasks/big-societyfund/big-society-fund-details or contact the BSF team on 01263 516173 or 01263 516248.

SONGS OF LOVE AND NONSENSE Sheringham and Cromer Choral in performance in The Auden Theatre

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society returns to The Auden Theatre on Saturday 14 July at 7.30pm to celebrate their 85th Anniversary with an exuberant programme of music celebrating both Love and Nonsense.

They are delighted that for this special concert they will be accompanied on the magnificent Steinway ‘A’ grand piano by two highly talented keyboard players – rehearsal accompanist Philip Adams together with the world renowned composer/pianist Michael Finnissy. The concert will feature the love songs of Johannes Brahms Geistliches Lied

MARK WOWS AUDIENCE AT BRISTON!

Op.30 and Liebeslieder Op.52 and Eric Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs. The nonsense element is provided by 7 Nonsense Songs by Richard Rodney Bennett.

Musical Director, David Ballard, says “this will be a wonderful concert for a summer evening with music ranging from the sublime love songs of Brahms and Eric Whitacre to the hilariously ridiculous nonsense songs of R R Bennett. This may be classical music but it will be far from stuffy”.

And, for those who like the truly romantic touch, the words of Whitacre’s love songs were ‘postcards’ written for him in Hebrew in 1996 by his then girlfriend – now his wife. Tickets £12 (£15 on the door), under 18’s FREE are available now from The Auden Theatre Box Office 01263 713444 or online at www.audentheatre.co.uk

On Friday 22 June it was a packed hall again at Briston’s Copeman Centre, when UK organ star Mark Thompson again visited to weave his musical magic. Using a Yamaha organ he started with a bouncy medley all about sunshine - including ‘Bring Me Sunshine’ of course. The 'Bumble Boogie’ was based on the 'Flight of The Bumblebee’ and got a terrific round of applause, as did a spirited version of ‘Brazil’ and the haunting ‘Sleepy Shores’.

Classical lovers got ‘Danse Macarbre’ and the Strauss favourite ‘Voices Of Spring’, and coming right up to date he played his interpretation of Ed Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’. Indeed, the whole evening was just packed with musical gems to suit all tastes, and as the show ended, the audience showed their appreciation in great measure. As with all our shows, profits from raffle and refreshments benefit the Copeman Centre’s own fundraising, this time to the tune of £188, and our stall selling goodies in aid of the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital project (our ongoing supported charity) made another £32 - we are well on our way to our target of £1500 for them this year!

NORTH NORFOLK FIBREGLASS FLAT ROOFING COMPANY LTD The best solution for a flat roof construction

The next in the series of shows is on Friday 3 August, when another top organist will be visiting - the flamboyant and very funny Tim Flint (pictured) - imagine a cross between Liberace and Les Dawson, but with the highest musical skills you could wish for, and you’ve got the picture! Tickets are available now at just £6 each, and as usual, each paying audience member can bring an under 16 year old music lover with them at no extra charge; just mention this when you book your own ticket, which you can do now by telephoning Carol on 01263 860844 - you can use your credit or debit card if you wish.

The Copeman Centre is in Hall Street, Briston, NR24 2LG, and it is a venue that is very comfortable and full of character, with plenty of free parking and wide level access that is ideal for disabled music lovers. The seats are very comfortable, the acoustics are excellent, and our audiences are a really friendly bunch too! Why not come and join us for the best in live music at a very reasonable price!

Summer Spirit as Cley Calls to art and nature lovers A long summer weekend of wildlife and creativity inspired by the unique North Norfolk landscape is coming to Cley from Thursday 2 until Sunday 5 August.

With Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Aspinall Centre as its hub, Cley Calling Summer Spirit is a festival of writing, art, photography, music and performance, all inspired by the natural world. Each event in the festival reflects nature in a different way, through the eyes, the voice, the fingertips or the mind of a different artist.

For families, a two-day workshop will see one of the bird hides at Cley become a giant pinhole camera, with an exhibition of photos created. On the Saturday we are celebrating marine wildlife, with a free full day of ‘Ocean Commotion’ on the beach.

There will be performances from musician Toby Hay, and John Hinton will sing his ‘Ensonglopedia of Science’. Bringing her new book Eye of the Shoal, Helen Scales comes to Cley Calling to destroy the myth that fish are brute, unthinking creatures and to enchant us with the watery secrets of their lives. North Norfolk artist Amelia Mills is enthralled by the shifting moods and shapes of the sea. For Cley Calling she will deliver a live demonstration of her unique style of capturing the North Sea waves in paint and exhibit her work in the Aspinall Centre for two weeks.

For some lovers of the wild, engaging with nature involves detailed study, description and naming. With its mix of grazing marsh, saltmarsh and reedbed, Cley is not only a celebrated site for birds. Its varied habitats are also home to many scarce or little-known species of moth so experts will be on hand during the festival to open their live traps and share a haul of moths whose beauty is matched only by the strange, poetic names.

Cley Calling festivals. For the full events listing and to book events where required, go to www.cleycalling.com or call the NWT Visitor Centre at Cley on 01263 740008.

Cley Marshes centre manager, Ewan Carr said “The Cley Calling celebration will show off this great landscape and encourage people of all ages to engage with wildlife, nature and the creative responses it inspires. Please come along and enjoy a range of events, many for free, all with a stunning Cley backdrop.”

Even less well known than moths are solitary bees, many of which are tiny and inhabit vanishing remnants of habitat. Nick Owens, author of Bees of Norfolk and Cley local, will lead a Cley Calling workshop on bee identification, aimed at complete beginners and established bee-lovers alike. We’ll be all abuzz with bee crafts and activities for families during the Friday too. There is even more to this celebration of all things wild in North Norfolk and of the wild creativity of people faced with nature - guided walks; a beach clean, barbecue on the terrace, wildlife watching - the summer spirit is strong at Cley Marshes. This is the third year of Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s

Exhibition at Riverside Art and Glass

Sue will be exhibiting in the exhibition. “They even took some of our artists to exhibit in the gallery on a long-term basis.”

A popular glass exhibition returns to Norfolk from 11 to 25 July.

In total there will be 11 artists exhibiting showing a wide range of both wall hung and plinth based work spanning a wide range of glass techniques.

The Contemporary Glass Society (CGS) Eastern Hub has been invited to exhibit for the second year running at Riverside Art and Glass, Wroxham. This selling exhibition is open to all east based glass artists, who are CGS members.

“We had such a successful event last year that Fish Dish Sue Purser Hope the gallery was keen to hold another event,” says Chair of the Contemporary Glass Society Sue Purser Hope, who relocated to the county five years ago to fulfil a lifetime’s ambition to live by the sea.

ART AT ITS BEST IN BRISTON!

The Open Studios at Briston are always very popular with local people, who go along to admire the artwork skills of talented people living on their doorstep, and one such venue opening its doors last month was the beautiful home studio at Frogmoor Farm at the end of Mill Road at the three way junction. It is owned (and almost entirely built!) by Siobham and Michael Hearn, and it gives Siobhan a wonderful airy place to paint, and of course, to hold occasional exhibitions to showcase her art - and also that of many of her very artistic friends who also work in the area.

As well as her own pictures, there were other

beautiful paintings and prints on show, some amazing ceramic work, and incredible fused glass pieces from Imogen Kenrick. Items were all available for sale, including both framed and unframed pictures and prints, and also some beautiful greetings cards that featured the designs in many of the larger pictures. It was no wonder that so many visitors came along to this event to marvel at the quality of Briston’s own craft experts.

For more information on the Open Studio, or if you feel like having a go yourself, you can contact Siobhan via her website, www.siobhanhearn.com – our shows Siobhan (right) and Imogen Kenrick in the delightful studio in Briston.

Monthly Horoscopes by Claire Manion Astrologer August 2018

Aries ♈ 21st March - 20th April Long term goals appear to be in the spot light this month. You may have to review your plans and make some adjustments to achieve what you need to. By the end of the month any hold ups should start to fade away, leaving you free to proceed with certainty.

Taurus ♉ 20th April - 21st May You may have been caught up in lots of detail recently, but this month is a good time to step back and be objective about your responsibilities. Colleagues are likely to be in a co-operative mood and happy to help you out. This would give you the chance to relax and enjoy working with others.

Gemini ♊ 21stMay - 21st June You have probably been bandying ideas around and discussing plans for a creative project. These may be quite fluid at the beginning of the month. However, around the solar eclipse on 11th August you should settle on a plan of action. A week later, your ruling planet Mercury begins to move forward, so go for what you want! Cancer ♋ 22nd June -22nd July Money issues could come to light around the solar eclipse on August 11th. You may need to decide on your priorities and once you have, speak up and make your position clear to others. Stand firm and do not be swayed, but remember that a little tact can go a long way to helping you get what you need.

Leo ♌ 22nd July- 21st August On August 11th there is a solar eclipse in your sign so a new phase is on its way for you. As with all things new, this will involve challenges, but a flexible and open minded approach should make things easier. Discussions should be very rewarding, listen to your friends, some of their interesting ideas may just give you the inspiration you need.

Virgo ♍ 21st August- 21st September At the beginning the month, make time to spoil yourself for a change. Some much needed pampering could really help you to recharge your batteries. Around the full moon on the 26th others can be a bit over emotional, offer tea and sympathy by all means, but don’t get caught up in the drama!

Brancaster Exhibition for Tapping House Hospice

You may want to put a new twist on your original plans and will feel a sense of a job well done once they are completed.

Aquarius ♒ 20th January - 18th February It looks like there may be changes on the domestic front for you and everything can feel quite up in the air. By the end of the month the way ahead should become clearer. Don’t push too hard, changes take time. If others are being difficult, try seeing things from their point of view, you may be surprised with the solutions they offer.

Pisces ♓ 19th February – 20th March Have your thoughts been drifting off to distant shores? Well, now is a good time to dust down your suitcase! Holistic skin care from Coltishall Clinic

Look after your skin this summer

Skin is the largest organ in the human body. It is our body’s first line of defence against the elements such as sun, wind, heat, pollution etc. You may be surprised to learn than some skin cancers are caused by excessive sun exposure during our formative years of between 5 and 15 years of age. So it is especially important to use sun protection for children. Also our capacity to form collagen and for skin to renew itself reduces from the age of 18 years. But, there are things we can do to slow down this process. Good skin care forms the foundation of skin health. So here are our recommendations.

Skin care

Cleanse and protect Cleanse to remove contaminants from the skin. Based on your type of skin you may choose a gentle or foaming cleanser or even a salicylic acid wash for oily skin. Good sun protection is vital. We are exposed to more artificial light from increasing light pollution so it makes sense to use a SPF 25 even indoors, especially for those of us who have pigmentation issues. Sun protection is not only for the face but also for the whole body including scalp, ears and hands.

For specific skin problems such as acne, rosacea and pigmentation we can use specialised skin care and laser treatments. Lasers can also be used very successfully to treat acne scarring, facial wrinkles and to achieve skin tightening. These procedures however may require a small amount of recovery time. These can be performed purely under local anaesthesia.

For more advanced skin changes we can offer more invasive treatments including surgical treatments. By offering a full range of skin care services –from skin creams to surgery, we can look after all your skin care needs over a lifetime. We also make recommendations based on your unique needs and not suggest treatments only because these are available.

Log on to www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call us on 0800 0430737 for more information or to book your consultation appointment.

Coltishall Clinic Skin Care approach ©

Exfoliate Dead skin build-up can give your skin a dull, dry, and lifeless look. Exfoliate to reveal softer, fresher, looking skin. You can use an exfoliating product or try our microdermabrasion treatments to remove dry patches and other minor skin imperfections.

Hydrate Inside and Out Our bodies are made up of more than 60 per cent water, but throughout the day, we can become dehydrated, giving our skin a wrinkled, less firm appearance. To avoid drying out, drink plenty of water for internal hydration. External hydration is also important, so try applying facial and body lotions immediately following a shower to help seal in moisture.

Sharing your home with an older parent Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr

This is a companion to last month’s article on the topic of ‘The Bank of Mum and Dad', which dealt with parents helping their young adult children put their first foot on the housing ladder. Here, I consider arrangements where children help and support their parents with housing in later life.

This can be provided by combining one home into two or by a ‘granny annexe’ arrangement; usually, but not always, done with the best of motives. It may involve an element of a gift but, with that comes risks and sacrifices. The solicitor has a major role to play in putting in place a plan and/or giving independent advice.

Possible arrangements are:

• Buying something together, possibly a house with a granny annexe; • Buying two homes close together, with each household still being independent; • Adapting/extending one of their homes; • Squeezing the parent into the current home; this is usually the least good option.

Important points to consider are:

• Differing interests and potential conflicts; especially between the in-laws. Ideally, all arrangements should be as open within the family as possible, even if it is not what all the family would have chosen. Here, clear legal advice is critical and all the possible future problems need thinking through in advance.

North Norfolk Photographic Society

North Norfolk Photographic Society is celebrating this summer with a photography project featuring all aspects of Norfolk’s coast.

The Society is running several workshops on different themes relating to the coast including wildlife, action, close up, landscapes, people and abstract. Whilst priority will go to existing members of the society there is opportunity for non-members to join them on the practical workshops. The workshops will be fun and are designed to give the photographer some pointers to capture interesting and impactful images.

The workshops will be augmented by feedback sessions in a relaxed social atmosphere at the Pheasant Hotel in Kelling. To find out more contact Paul Richards on 07980 484 378 or by email Paul@pronature.co.uk with reference ‘Coastal Project’. More information is available on the clubs website at : http://www.nnphotosoc.org/coastalproject/

The Society will celebrate the end of the project by putting together a digital audio-visual show displaying a variety of images taken throughout the project. This will be shown at next year’s public Annual Exhibition. secretary.nnps@gmail.com or see the club website at http://www.nnphotosoc.org/

The best of the best is the aim of the annual competitions run by camera clubs and North Norfolk Photographic Society held theirs for printed images on 6 June.

The Club offers two sets of entrants – novices and advanced. The contest was judged by Marilyn Steward, who is a member of Harlow Photographic Society and is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society. She started by looking at the entries from the Novices. There were 16 photographs entered in this section and Val Dawson succeeded in taking both first and second places! Her image ‘Norwich Castle Detail’ was her winner.

There were 40 entries in the Advanced section, which was won by Paul Richards with ‘Leucistic Red Kite’. To save looking it up, be informed (if you were not aware) that a Leucistic Red Kite is a rare form of Red Kite that is in fact white. Second was Lizzie Wallis with ‘Puffin in the Bluebells’.

Norwich Castle Detail Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month at Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the club Secretary, Judith Wells at

Holt Festival announces new Artistic Director Anwen Hurt to take the helm of North Norfolk’s leading arts festival

North Norfolk’s award-winning Holt Festival has announced that Anwen, Lady Hurt is to be their new permanent Artistic Director from 2019 onwards.

Anwen has been involved in the Holt Festival, in various guises, since it was founded in 2009 under the chairmanship of Rhu Bruce Lockheart. She will take the reigns for the 2019 festival and beyond, following in the footsteps of Stash Kirkbride who took the helm as guest Artistic Director for the current 10th anniversary year and previous directors, Charles Pugh, Delaval Astley and Tony Britten.

‘I am delighted to be appointed Artistic Director of the Holt Festival.’ Anwen commented ‘I have been involved with the Holt Festival in different guises since its inception and have watched it grow over the last ten years under the guidance of Rhu and Tony, Delaval, Charles and Stash. Big shoes to fill! I look forward to continuing their work and helping the festival to expand and develop.’

Adney Payne, Chair of the Festival Board said ‘Everyone at Holt Festival is delighted that Anwen Hurt has agreed to be our Artistic Director from 2019. She has been involved in the Festival for many years and we are very lucky that someone of her calibre will be programming the Festival. ‘

Anwen was married to the actor Sir John Hurt until his death in 2017

and has lived in Norfolk for the past ten years.

The award-winning Holt Festival has become established as one of the East of England’s most anticipated annual events. During festival week the charming North Norfolk Georgian country town becomes a magnet for tourists, arts lovers and international performers. For its 2018 10th anniversary year guest Artistic Director Stash Kirkbride has curated a programme that encompasses big names like Jasper Carrott and Leo Sayer; local legends The Nimmo Twins with a special Norfolk Day event, and political and journalistic heavyweights Lord Ashdown, Ann Widdecombe and John Simpson. The music programme ranges from Italian classical pianist Gloria Campagner to the Zimbabwean sounds of Anna Mudeka, as well as rock and jazz. The Festival, which runs from 21-29 July also boasts world exclusive exhibitions, children’s events, drama, film, comedy and more. For full details and tickets visit www.holtfestival.org

Many of the events will be held in ‘The Paddock’, a delightfully enclosed area in the centre of the village within a short stroll from the allocated free parking area. Stalls will include jewellery, book sales, bric a brac, needlework, cider co-operative, woodwork, clocks and watches and plant sales. A marquee will house a summer flower show and another marquee will be displaying an art exhibition.

Children will find plenty of interest with a Punch and Judy show, coconut shy and face painting together with a number of other games.

In an effort to provide something for everyone there will also be a show of classic cars, bikes and tractors plus amateur radio communications demonstration, static model aircraft, model steam engines, a gun dog obedience display and the Mundesley Fire Engine with crew.

A visitors’ programme will include a map identifying the locations of the amazing scarecrows which will be on show as visitors meander around the village.

Also there are opportunities to attend a Beekeeping Demonstration run by a Master Beekeeper and to take part in a children’s treasure trail. Ploughman’s lunches, tea, coffee and a variety of cakes will be available in the Village Hall, whilst the family friendly Social Club with licensed bar will be providing a barbecue along with live music. Michael Tyler, who forms part of an organising committee for this Fun Day, says “We have tried to cater for everyone and invite visitors to enjoy a few leisurely hours in our picturesque village whilst supporting a worthy cause”.

THE NORTH NORFOLK RAILWAY IS LOOKING FOR YOU!

If you have some ‘free time’ and would like to get involved in one of Norfolk’s top tourist attractions, the North Norfolk Railway would love to hear from you.

The railway, which runs steam trains between Holt and Sheringham, is keen to recruit volunteers to lend a hand. Volunteers are needed for a variety of roles including Dining Train Staff, Ticket Office, Gift Shop and Buffet, Platform Supervisors and on train staff as well as many other positions. Anyone interested in getting involved can find out more by visiting us for our informal ‘Volunteer Drop-in Days’ on the first Saturday of each month from 10am until 1pm in the Refreshment Rooms at Sheringham Station.

You won’t need any specialist knowledge of railways to get involved, as whatever position you choose to volunteer in you will be trained for it. Volunteers are all ages and come from various backgrounds to help us with the many different aspects of running the railway. It’s a great chance to help with something that is so much a part of the local community and to meet with such interesting people. For older people there is the camaraderie and

for the young people there is the chance to be able to show prospective employers that you would be a willing employee.

minute intervals throughout the day and on each return to Sheringham the loco has to do a ‘runround’ and then be dispatched again. The day continues like this with breaks for tea and answering lots of questions from our passengers as well as visitors who have just ‘come to have a look’.

Dennis is a volunteer Platform Supervisor and is going to tell you about a day at the North Norfolk Railway ...

“As a uniformed member of staff I will be dressed in my three piece suit, white shirt and tie. I like to arrive at Sheringham at about 8.30am and park in the staff carpark. I start unlocking the gates leading from the main carpark. Ted, the Station Master will have already unlocked the buildings and then together we clean out the ticket office and waiting room, so that we are soon ready to receive our first passengers. By 9 o’clock we are ready to have our first cuppa of the day. After this we load the first train with the stock for the buffets on the stations further up the line 9.50am is when, as train dispatcher, I must check all the doors are closed, signals are set correctly and then I can indicate to the guard that he may blow the whistle and wave his flag to let the train leave. Most days we run two trains on the line at about 50

Morgan the Railway Cat Family Fun Day

I enjoy what I am doing because it helps to keep me fit, I meet lots of nice people and I get the chance to work with a BIG TRAIN SET. I am on the platform at Sheringham on Saturdays and then on Thursdays I volunteer at Holt. Each station is very different; Sheringham is the hustle and bustle station with a Station Master and two platform supervisors whilst at Holt I am the acting Station Master with perhaps one other member of staff as this seems more like an older quiet village station.

I really enjoy what I do. It gives me job satisfaction helping people to enjoy the railway as well as having a great day among with my friends. If you cannot make it to one of our ‘Volunteer Drop-in Days’ then please phone the North Norfolk Railway’s station office on 01263 820800 for further details.

Morgan the Railway Cat is having a Family Fun Day at Weybourne Station on Sunday 19 August. He will be there with his friends from the book from 10.30am till 3pm. There will be lots of good old fashioned games to play, music, cartoon drawing with Colin Wyatt the children's illustrator, storytelling, dressing up and much more. There is no parking at Weybourne but there is at Sheringham and Holt. Refreshments and treats will be available but why not bring a picnic? More info from NNR Poppy Line Office on 01263 820800.

Lanterns Light the Way for Local Hospice

Last month 150 hospice supporters came together to walk in memory of loved ones that they have lost during The Norfolk Hospice’s very first Lantern Walk.

The 3km walk, held at The Walks, Kings Lynn, started at dusk and walkers were given a lantern to light the way along the route, in celebration of the life of the person or people they were remembering.

The Lantern Walk, which was organised in conjunction with Kings Lynn Borough Council, was also kindly been sponsored by SFK Cooper, long standing supporters of the Hospice.

As well as the lantern lit walk, participants were entertained by ‘Simply Sing’ – King’s Lynn Community Choir whilst Ben Norris, daytime

New book from Sheringham Naturalist - Moss Taylor

Sheringham naturalist and author, Moss Taylor, has just had his 8th book published, ‘Wings over Weybourne’ – an account of the history and birdlife of Weybourne Camp.

When he first visited Weybourne Camp in 1972, little did he realise that it would become the centre of his birdwatching and bird ringing activities for the next 46 years, as it still does to this day.

The book opens with a chapter by the owner of the Muckleburgh Collection, Sir Michael Savory, in which he gives a fascinating account of the history of the defences employed in the Weybourne area from Roman times up to the end of the Second World War. The main part of the book describes the amazing variety of birds

presenter from KLFM also attended.

The hospice would also like to thank the 22 volunteers who gave up their time to help marshal the walk and register the walkers as the event would not have been possible without them.

Donations are still coming in but so far the hospice has raised nearly £3350 from the event. Lindsey Atkin, Community Fundraising Manager at the Hospice said “We were blown away by the success of our first ever Lantern Walk. To see so many people come together in such a poignant display of remembrance was wonderful and we are excited to develop this event further in 2019.”

that the author and other observers have recorded on the camp and the adjoining Muckleburgh Hill. To date 289 species have been recorded in the area, the vast majority since 1972. In addition almost 24,000 birds of 118 species have been ringed on the camp, and these have resulted in a large number of recoveries both within the British Isles and abroad, the most interesting of which are tabulated and their significance explained.

Copies of the book are available from the shop at the Muckleburgh Collection or from Moss Taylor by phoning 01263 823637 or by email at moss.taylor@btinternet.com

The book runs to 146 pages and includes 39 colour photos of many of the less common birds. It retails at £15 and all profits from the book will go to Love for Leo, a charity set up by the author and his partner, Robina Churchyard, which helps to finance equipment and treatment that is not available under the National Health Service, for Norfolk and Suffolk children with cerebral palsy.

The smile says it all! 5 local chess players, Bruce Carman, Bob Grindrod, David Owen, Matt Rausch and Jonathan Reeve, have decided to re-establish Aylsham Chess Club in time for the 2018-19 season.

The plan is to enter teams in the NCCA (Norfolk County Chess Association) league which starts in October, as well as having internal graded competitions and playing friendly chess games.

Latest news from Broadland Chess Club!

The club will be based at Aylsham & District Ex-Service & Social Club, 64 Hungate Street, Aylsham, NR11 6AA.

Over the summer months members will be running events to raise funds and generate interest in the new club.

The smile says it all!

On Saturday 5 May the Norfolk Megafinal of the UK Chess Challenge took place. Young Danny Dawson (pictured) from BCC became the Under 7 boys Supremo which means that he also qualifies for the Gigafinal to be held later in the year! There is no need to say anymore on how Danny feels about his award and his cup -I think that the expression on his face sums it up. This has to be one of the photos of the year! Other Club successes in the competition were Benjie Perry, U-10 boys -silver medal and qualifier for the gigafinal, Darcy Pashley, U-11 girls -silver and qualifier, Jack Hall, U-11 boys -silver and qualifier, Joshua Dawson, U-11 boys, bronze and qualifier, Benedict Ward U-12 boys – silver and qualifier, Ewan Pashley U-13 boys bronze medal. Many congratulations to all of our young members; lovely to see siblings in the group as well! Just to show what an achievement this is there were initially 40,000+ entrants for the competition from all over the UK! The BCC team have safely won the Norfolk section of the Norfolk and Suffolk Cup and now wait to see who their opponents will be from the Suffolk side as their matches are still to completed. They have also retained the Norfolk Chess League Division 1 title after defeating the Norfolk and Norwich B team 4-0. A couple of good wins there for the club! Club player Stephen Pullinger deserves special mention for topping the individual leader board for Division 1 with an impressive record of 80%.

As reported last month the Broadland Mallards (Callum Fruish, Sophia Needham, David Elsey and Matthew Watts) won the newly formed Friendly League 2018 and the second picture shows the team with their trophy interestingly titled the Stitchbury Shield! I am sure that there must be a story behind that, perhaps I shall put on my detective’s hat and get to the bottom of it before the end of the summer. The response to this new competition has been extremely positive and we look

End of season round-up By the time you read this it will be July and the chess club season will be over for the 2017/18 season. All of the tournaments have finished and the battles between black and white have been won or lost.

Our new BCC Junior Champion is Benedict Ward, (pictured here with his cup) many congratulations to him.

The final of the BCC Champion between Ken McEwan and Roy Hughes took place during the second week of June, and with two such strong, equally matched players it is always a fight to the end. This year they went into the match equal on points, equal on strength and equal on desire to take the title. However, neither could break the others determination and the match result was declared a draw. This means that the pair share the title and the cup, does this also mean though that Sue, Ken’s wife and myself get to share the dusting and polishing? Possibly Sue will be able to polish that cup alongside

forward to running it again next season. In the individual Club competitions, all matches are now completed for the Club Championship title – apart from one. Ken McEwan and Roy Hughes are currently level on points and still to play each other. This match is always interesting as it often takes place in my dining room, this means that both the dog and I have to remain quiet at all times and hope that the phone does not ring! (Yes this did happen last year!) Paul Coppard is currently leading the BCC Challengers title but as there are still several games outstanding this title is too close to call. Broadland Chess Club meets at the Kings Head, Coltishall Monday and Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm. We will be taking our summer break from the end of June. We always welcome new members and visitors, however it is often best to contact us first so that we can meet and greet you, if For al you would like further inspo your l r ts formation then please see in N gea our Facebook and Twitter Nor orth r folk pages, or contact us via email at broadlandchessIndoor & Outdoor Sports club@gmail.com. the trophy received by Ken, as captain, from John Wickham on behalf of the Broadland Bitterns for taking the Norfolk Division 1 title.Paul badger also received the Norfolk Handicap Trophy on behalf of the Broadland Swifts.

BCC has recently been running coaching sessions for groups of players within the club who are keen to improve their game, one of them, The Broadland Improvers held their own in-house tournament during May and June, this was won by Matthew Watts. The season finished with their tutor Roy Hughes running a simultaneous display against all 6 of them. A simultaneous is basically Roy taking on all 6 players at once.

Broadland Chess Club currently meets Monday and Wednesday nights at The Kings Head, Coltishall, however we are closing for the summer holidays so will be back at the beginning of September. For more information find us on Facebook/Twitter or contact us via our website.
