Steam in Miniature

The Bure Valley Railway continues to celebrate its 25th anniversary year with an event on 26th and 27th September 2015 which celebrates the heritage of steam in a small scale. Alongside our home fleet of 15” engines purpose built for line, we will have two visiting engines: “Northern Rock” from Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway and “No. 24” Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway.

There will be a special intensive timetable in operation throughout the weekend to allow visitors the opportunity to see as many different locomotives as possible hard at work over the nine miles between Aylsham and Wroxham. In addition, we will have a selection of models in

Ann’s World-Famous Marmalade

Over the course of the season we are lucky enough to receive several compliments for our food and accommodation, but the majority are for our absolutely wonderful marmalade, served up for breakfast and even finding its way into the odd dish on the à la carte. The marmalade is handmade on site by Ann Graveling, who for 28 years cooked, cleaned and basically ran the Grove as

well as cooking for, cleaning up after and basically running a family of five children and a husband at the same time. A marvellous effort! And now, in retirement, Ann creates the most fantastic marmalade, some of which is sold (with the help of assorted granddaughters) in aid of a Malawian Hospital Charity and some of which is used in our restaurant. And now the Cromer Times can exclusively publish her secret recipe. If you want to try some of Ann’s marmalade then either buy a jar from the entrance to number 97 Overstrand Road, or of course pop in and see us for dinner – 01263512412 to book!

Ingredients (makes approx 10lbs of marmalade) 2 ruby grapefruit 2 large oranges 2 large lemons 6 pints of water 6lb sugar

Cut and juice your fruit, and shred the skin.

Add to a saucepan with the six pints of water.

Simmer for between 60 and 90 minutes until the skin is soft. Add the sugar and stir, then bring to a rolling boil until set is reached.

Leave for twenty minutes, then pot in hot, sterilised jars.

A delicious Fish and Chip lunch at the hospice On Wednesday 26 August, Hillington residents, patients and carers, along with their family and friends joined staff and volunteers in a Big Norfolk Fish & Chip Lunch at The Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House. IB the Chippy, a mobile traditional Fish and Chip van which regularly visits Norfolk, parked outside of the reception area to cater for over 100 hungry attendees. Ian, the owner of IB the Chippy will kindly be donating a percentage of takings from every portion of Fish & Chips he has sold on the day. Mark Shea, Commercial Director at The Norfolk Hospice said “It’s been a fantastic afternoon. Visitors were able to socialise, see the latest developments of the Hospice including the newly laid paving and garden, have a tour of the Hospice and enjoy a delicious Fish & Chip lunch!”

The Big Norfolk Fish and Chip Lunch was organised in aid of The Big Norfolk Fish & Chip Event on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 August where a group of local Fish & Chip shops donated either a percentage of takings from every portion they sell or alternatively give The Norfolk Hospice a one off donation.

How to lose Mummy Tummy… quickly! Many women struggle to lose mummy tummy. Pregnancy stretches the abdominal skin and muscles. Hormonal changes cause the body to store fat and fluid. Whilst a lot of these changes get better with time, many mums struggle to get back to their pre-baby shape.

Combine this with an increasing workload, childcare, work and family pressures -unless you have a lot of help it is difficult to find time to devote to long hours of exercise and calorie counting. To top this- if you do manage to lose weight you find fat disappear from areas you don’t want such as your face or bust but those resistant fatty deposits in abdomen respond poorly if at all!

of controversy about their use and when you consider total cost of the injections to achieve mild results at best- we advise to avoid these and go for the laser liposuction which is far superior, minimally invasive and provides wow results at comparable cost.

It is very important to stress that we like to wait at least a year after childbirth before we consider any surgical options. To find out more information or to book an appointment contact Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic on 0800 0430737 or log on to the website ww.coltishallclinic.co.uk

If you also happen to have a caesarean scar it often tethers down the skin and results in a small bulge of overhanging fat above.

So how can we help? If you are gradually getting back into shape and happy with the progress you are making then it is great. Continue with the good work. If on the other hand you are struggling then we have many solutions to address your specific concern. One of the best modern solutions is laser liposculpture, literally sculpting your new body shape with the laser. If you have excess skin we can help you with a mini-tummy-tuck. This is a good option if you also desire a scar revision. The advantage of this option over a traditional tummy tuck is that recovery is quick and you don’t have a long scar. If you have stretch marks and loose skin this can be tightened by our non-surgical treatments. What about fat dissolving injections? These can be an option for small areas of fat but we do not think these are a good option for larger areas. There is a lot

Norfolk Managers Boost their Skills

Two managers from Crayford and Abbs in Norfolk have successfully completed a Leadership and Management Programme. Kevin Abbs, Director of Crayford and Abbs, commissioned the programme with Callander Associates at the beginning of this year. Rupert Fox (Sales Manager) and Mark Wright (After Sales Manager) have worked with Simon Arthur of Callander Associates on the programme. “Mark and Rupert were able to combine their specialist knowledge with a variety of management tools and feedback and have taken their day to day work to another level. Their aim, and mine, is to make customers very happy. Happy customers come back - and they tell others” said Simon. Mark Wright, Rupert Fox, Simon Arthur and Kevin Abbs.

The programme provides practical skills and tools which can be used immediately with customers, staff and colleagues. Kevin Abbs has seen immediate and ongoing results from the programme: “We have been very pleased to be associated with Callander Associates and in particular working with Simon Arthur. The confidence this course has given both Rupert and Mark has been immeasurable and is reflected by the overall team morale and the progress, we as a business, has made this year!” “We have been so pleased with the training we have received from Callander Associates we are rolling out a CPD programme for the rest of the team to ensure we continue to invest in the future of both our team and as a business.” Simon Arthur can be contacted by email: simon@simonjarthur.com

Ingworth residents latest to benefit from Big Society Fund award Local children and their families are now enjoying a new play area in Ingworth after North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) awarded £7,500 from its Big Society Fund. The grant of £7,500 towards a total project cost of £16,500 has enabled Ingworth Parish Council to buy a new swing and climbing tower. NNDC’s Big Society Fund Panel recognised Ingworth Parish Council’s strong desire to improve the play facilities for the local community and in support of the work it had already undertaken to secure funding for the project, was happy to make an award. Ingworth Parish Council has also secured funding from Awards for All England.

play equipment will be popular and well used.”

North Norfolk District Council set up the Big Society Fund in 2012 to help support, benefit and strengthen communities across North Norfolk. In the last three years, the Fund has awarded grants in excess of £1 million for over 120 community projects that are meeting local need and make a real difference to communities in North Norfolk.

Cabinet Member, Cllr. Sue Arnold, at a recent event to unveil the equipment, said “Ingworth Parish Council has demonstrated a strong will to support its local community so I am delighted that North Norfolk District Council’s Big Society Fund has been able to play a part in improving such an important facility. “Play parks are a great place for local children to enjoy and a valuable community meeting point for parents and carers. I would like to particularly like to thank Ann Marie, Gill, other members of the Parish Council and all those involved in this project. Their hard work, commitment and dedication to improve play facilities are commended. I’m sure the new

Excel2000 Course for Carers in North Norfolk

‘Care in the Community’ - there are still many gaps - those discharged from hospital and not able to care for themselves, or simply being isolated, onely and lethargic, being reliant on family, neighbours and friends to provide their daily needs, have someone to talk to. Where does the carer receive training and support? There is a need to encourage safe physical activity, mobility and motivation, thereby improving quality of life for the carer and person being cared for. The good news is that, following the two successful carers’ courses in North orfolk, a third training course for carers is starting on 25 September at Kelling Hospital which is free to successful applicants thanks to being sponsored by the pro-active Kelling Hospital Appeal Trust, which understands the need for improving ‘Care in the Community’. This will relieve bed-blocking whilst showing the carer how to improve lifestyle for themselves and the person for whom they are caring. The course is being tutored by the Charity Excel 2000 (Reg Charity No 1038307). The training will consist of 10 morning sessions and includes specialist speakers from statutory and third sector agencies and the President of the Charity, Bob Laventure, well known internationally for helping people to offset inactivity whilst encouraging a more active and enjoyable lifestyle. This programme is necessary at this austere time with so many cutbacks with the needs of carers being even greater than before whilst supporting local communities. Make the most of this opportunity! Enquiries to Excel2000: mail@excel2000.plus.com or 01263 826803 and leave a message for Christine McEvoy or Penny Bevan Jones and someone will return your call.

Older People’s Day 2015 Everyone here at Age Concern North Norfolk loves to celebrate age and see it only as a number.

We are supporting the up and coming Older People’s Day, as we do every year, with a special event. This year we hope to make it an extra special event as a tribute to our former Befriending Manager, Elva Gledhill, who very sadly and suddenly, passed away in July and who always befriended and helped anyone regardless of age. It will be held at Sheringham Community Centre on 1 October between 1pm and 3.30pm. Local people are invited to come along to this FREE event where they can learn more about local services and social clubs. Those groups and organisations attending are Fit Together, Ben’s Workforce, North Norfolk Community Transport, The British Heart Foundation, the local Library and Police services and the Older People’s Forum. There will be information stands and talks from associations such as the Community Services on safeguarding issues, Dementia Friends on becoming a dementia friendly community and Be Ready for It Palliative Care Academy as well as from our own services including our Befriending Scheme (which is supported by the National Lottery) and our Day Centre. Our computer support group will also be on hand to offer advice about getting online and staying safe. There will be plenty to enjoy with an exercise programme and Tai-Chi and we have live music on the day and always encourage people to get up and have a dance. There will also be hand massage and art workshops. Refreshments are provided including tea, cake and sandwiches; with fun being the operative word. We would love to see you there on the day to help promote our aim of proving age is just a number and that Norfolk leads the way in uniting different generations. On the day, North Norfolk Stories will be on hand to record stories from people who have memories of growing up, or working in the area, as part of their oral exhibition beginning in the New Year and we will also have our own Intergenerational Group, run in conjunction with the pupils of Gresham’s School in Holt, attending on the day. To find out more please call Adam at Age Concern North Norfolk on 01263 823126 or Ann 07765 826288

Better Services, Better Value for Money @Fakenham Connect Building work is underway at Fakenham Connect to provide better services for customers. The building work will enable the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to move into Fakenham Connect later this year.

Your Vote Matters –

Residents reminded to complete Household Enquiry Form

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is reminding its residents to ensure they have completed the recently issued Household Enquiry Form. Forms have been sent to all residents in north Norfolk, asking them to check whether the information that appears on the electoral register for those living at their address is correct as part of NNDC’s annual household enquiry canvass.

As the first part of the work gets underway the district council’s reception area has moved to the area immediately in front of the NNDC public entrance. There are no changes to the Registrar’s area or the Town Council. Under the proposals the DWP will relocate from Fakenham Job Centre in Norwich Road to Fakenham Connect. This will give the District Council and the DWP the opportunity to bring 3services together in one location. It will also help to reduce the cost of services by sharing the building and ensure vital public services remain in the market town. The work is being carried out by Thrower and Rutland and is expected to take eight weeks to complete with the new job centre set to open in November. Opening times remain the same during the work – 8.30 to 5.30pm Monday to Thursday (closed 2.30pm to 1.30pm for lunch) and 8.30am to 4.30pm Friday (closed 12.30pm to 1.30pm for lunch).

The aim of the form is to ensure that the electoral register is up to date and to identify any residents who are not registered so that they can be encouraged to do so. Reminders are now being issued to those who have yet to respond. With the Police and Crime Commissioner election taking place across the country in May 2016, this is an opportunity for residents to make sure that when the election takes place they will easily be able to take part. Sheila Oxtoby, Electoral Registration Officer at North Norfolk District Council said “Although we’ve received a fantastic response from our residents with over 70% of households responding to the Household Enquiry Forms so far, there are still residents who have yet to do so. Changes can be made online at www.registerbyinternet.com/northnorfolk or confirm details are correct by Freephone to 0800 197 9871. You can even now confirm details via text message. Full details on how to do this can be found on the front of your form.” Every household must provide the information requested on their Household Enquiry Form, even if the property is empty, is a second home, is a business premises, or is a property where no one is entitled to be registered. Failure to respond will result in further reminders being sent and potentially a personal visit to the property being carried out. Residents are encouraged to respond as soon as possible. Residents seeking further information or guidance are encouraged to visit www.northnorfolk.org/register to view frequently asked questions about the annual canvass and Household Enquiry Forms.

Aldborough shop

A North Norfolk Post Master has come to the rescue of a village about to be left without a shop.

The village of Aldborough has a population of more than 600 people, many of them elderly, who are unable to reach other shops and services because they have no car. The shop also serves many surrounding villages including Thurgarton, Hanworth and Calthorpe. Aldborough has already seen the closure of a butcher’s shop in recent years and one of it two pubs last year. It still has a Post Office and a popular doctor’s surgery as well as a successful school. But the Spar shop in Aldborough is closing on 26th September this year leaving the village, designated a service village in North Norfolk

District Council’s structure plan, without a shop.

Peter Davison, 66, with the help of his daughter-in-law Margaret Adams, 42, is stepping into the breach by making interim alterations to the Post Office to offer a basic service from 29th of September. He said: ‘I would hate to see the village without a shop. There are many residents who depend upon it for their basic needs. I was looking forward to retiring but I do feel that something should be done. ‘I will start off providing simple needs such as bread, milk, eggs, tea, coffee and newspapers. We will not be a Tesco. I hope we can source much of our food locally, so we will be a local shop in every sense of the word. I will be talking to some local farmers to see whether we can take their meat, local bakers and other food suppliers,’ he said. ‘We will also try

and keep convenient hours – from 8.30am to 6pm.’ Mr Davison’s family have lived and traded in the village for the last 100 years. His grandfather was a cobbler and bootmaker in 1914 and the family has had the Post Office for 53 years. Peter Davison has been postmaster since 1994 and is now assisted by his daughter-in-law Margaret. Other members of his family and grandchildren live in the village and attend Aldborough school.

Outstanding A Level Results for Paston Students Students at Paston Sixth Form College achieved impressive A Level and BTEC results when they were published on Thursday 13 August. The college were particularly pleased that 18 A Level subjects had a 100% pass rate and 16 A Level subjects had over 50% of students achieving top A*-B grades.

Paston’s A Level pass rate remained at 98% with 75% achieving A*-C grades up 5% on the previous year and 50% achieving top A*-B top grades up 6% on last year. At BTEC, students achieved 100% pass rates with 65% gaining top grades.

Kevin Grieve, Principal, said “I am particularly proud of students who have improved on our very high standards. Our 2015 results are outstanding and I am very proud of all the students and staff at the College.”

The number of young people choosing to study at Paston Sixth Form College continues to be impressive. Students are travelling from an ever wider area to become part of our success. The College continues to improve learning facilities for young people wanting to study A level and BTEC courses. “These outstanding results reflect our encouragement of students to work hard, have high aspirations and develop the skills to be extremely successful. Universities throughout the country will be receiving talented young graduates from Norfolk this autumn as a result. We have also had a record six students gain a place at Oxbridge. “Outstanding A Level and BTEC results achieved by talented students expertly and enthusiastically taught by Paston Sixth Form Colleges’ specialist teachers. Well done to all involved”.

Treat for Norfolk musical lovers

On Saturday 26 September, two of North Norfolk's choirs will be joining forces for a spectacular selection of choral music.

Items sung by the combined voices of the Cantamus Choir and the men and boys voices of St Nicholas, North Walsham will include music from two coronations, themes from both the big and small screen and a rousing rendition of the most famous choral work of them all, the Hallelujah Chorus by G.F. Handel.

David Ballard said "This promises to be a treat for all to savour, and one that has been a long time coming following the unfortunate postponement of this concert earlier in the year. With upwards of 70 voices filling the dramatic architecture of St Nicholas, audiences can be assured of the roof being raised even higher. With the recent completion of the tower work, 2015 has already been a memorable year for both the church and the town, and this promises to be another memorable event, and well worth the enforced wait - don't miss it!"

Direction will once again be by David Ballard, with Laurence Caldecote providing accompaniment on the churches organ. Tickets are available either on the door, or from arts North Norfolk, No.1 Market Place, North Walsham, both costing £5. North Walsham Community Choir is going strong

- call out for more male members

North Walsham’s community choir is going strong, with 25 regular members coming along to the weekly practice nights. There is still space for more members – particularly men who can help out with the lower sections of the songs. The choir is working on popular songs, from Abba to the Beatles and will be working on a special set for Christmas appearances. The choir’s debut performance will be round the Christmas tree at the Christmas Fayre, held at the Atrium on Saturday 21 November.

The choir is led by Joseph Ballard, Arts North Norfolk’s director who has taught singing and performance skills for many years, including being a professional performer and singer himself. Joseph said “Some people come along because they want to increase their confidence and learn about singing in a group and others come along for a fun night out. I’m really proud of the group so far and the friendly atmosphere where singing together forms the best medicine for a busy week!” The choir for adults meets every Tuesday night, 7pm - 8.15pm at the Atrium. It is £3 per session which includes refreshments. Please note there will be no session on 6 October. No previous experience is necessary and you do not need to read music. New members are encouraged to come along and find out more about what the group does in its fun and relaxed atmosphere. The Community Choir is made up of adults and younger groups will be set up for Autumn and the arts charity encourages people to sign up early for the youth choir. To sign up, pop into Arts North Norfolk at No. 1 Market place or call 01692 218060. More information about other local classes, including acting and drama can be found at www.artsnorthnorfolk.org.

Twelve photographs were submitted in the Juniors’ section. The winner was Jessica Flint with her imaginative ‘Rosehip Syrup’, for which she was awarded a Pentax Optio RS1 500 camera, donated by Broads Cameras of North Walsham. Jessica, although only nine years old, has been taking successful photographs for three years with a Panasonic Lumix, and was recently a finalist in the Fine & Country Junior photographic competition, held at the Norfolk Showground earlier this year. Of her winning entry, Jessica said she had wanted a raindrop on her rosebud, but since she took it on a sunny day, she used the next best thing - golden syrup, dropped onto the bud from a syringe! It certainly catches the sunlight.

Wanderlust at Cley Marshes Visitor Centre Norfolk Wildlife Trust in conjunction with The Gramophones Theatre Company bring you a national tour of Wanderlust.

Three women search Norfolk for local stories of adventure. Hidden in the deepest, darkest depths of rural England, in the dusty corners of libraries are people with a burning secret. A story to tell...if only someone would ask... Armed each with a dictaphone and a pair of wellington boots, three women began a search to satisfy their lust for adventure. Hunting in forgotten parts of Norfolk they made it their mission to bring back the most exciting tales.

Wanderlust brings together a touching assortment of remarkable stories collected from people all over the county. A lady with twinkling eyes tells of her heroic journey of survival, an adventurer is lost on Ben Nevis battling against the snow and a man in a wicker chair remembers his dancing days with fondness. Wanderlust weaves stories together using humour, verbatim and beautiful live music to take the audience on an uplifting journey. This theatre will take place in the new Simon Aspinall Wildlife Education Centre, NWT Cley Marshes Visitor Centre at 7.30pm on Thursday 8 October 2015. Ticket price £12. Rural Matters

A NATIONAL campaign has been launched to highlight the importance of rural policing.

The "Rural Policing Matters" campaign was launched by the National Rural Crime Network on Monday (1 September).

NRCN research due to be published next month shows trust in policing is much lower than residents of urban areas, said NRCN chairman Julia Mulligan.

Only one third of people living or working in rural areas believe the police are responding to issues of concern to them compared to two thirds nationally, she warned.

Rural crime is also significantly under-reported, said Ms Mulligan, who is also Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire. The network is urging the government to reconsider proposed changes to how police forces are funded, and is encouraging people to respond to a government consultation.

Ms Mulligan said: "There is real concern both from representatives of rural communities like our network, and those communities themselves, that without proper resourcing for rural police forces

than some crimes and anti-social behaviour might not get the attention they deserve." She addded: "Trust in policing is already very low, especially when compared to urban residents, and if the government doesn't sufficiently recognise the needs of rural people, and therefore rural policing, that trust will only diminish. "We may then be in a vicious cycle of under-reporting, because of lack of trust and resources to deal with issues, which will then lead to further under-reporting." The network argues that a proposed new funding formula fails to take into account the unit-cost of policing a rural area. It says the formula also fails to reflect the majority of work the police do which is not in fact crime-related – such as road safety or responding to welfare issues.

The network is encouraging as many rural residents as possible to respond to a government consultation on the issue. It argues that the new police funding formula should recognise the "inbuilt complexities" of dealing with crime in rural, isolated areas.

Meanwhile, the network is due to launch a "rural policing matters" petition. Ms Mulligan said: "If you are a concerned member of a rural community, we want you to make your voice heard by responding directly to the government's consultation, and to sign the 'rural policing matters' petition."

The Prince's Countryside Fund has opened for applications with £725,000 available to rural communities Pressure on rural communities and people living and working in our countryside continued to mount, said the fund. Village shops, pubs and services were continuing to disappear and farm businesses were struggling from a major downturn, it warned.

Meanwhile, more support was needed to help younger people into farming and other rural careers. The fund said it was opening to help support inspiring rural initiatives that tackled these issues.

Organisations and charities that are helping to protect and sustain Britain's farming and rural communities can apply for much needed funding of up to £50,000.

The Prince's Countryside Fund opens online for grant applications on Monday,

7 September, until Thursday, 8 October. Since its inception in 2010, the charity has given £6 million in grants, distributed to 135 projects across the country, directly benefitting 160,000 people. Fund director Claire Saunders said; "Rural and farming communities are under immense pressure at the moment. "We are looking for projects which will have a long-term positive impact to help sustain our rural areas and encourage enterprise that will help the people who care for our countryside and make it tick. Britain's environment, security and prosperity depends on our countryside."

Ms Saunders said three quarters of British land was farmed, and agriculture was central to the landscape. It is crucial that we protect this priceless national asset and provide funding that supports the remarkable people working to create

14 | north norfolk post | september 2015

and sustain a vibrant rural economy."

Projects will be considered on their contribution to one of three key countryside issues: 1. Thriving Rural Communities - projects that provide innovative solutions to deliver assets and services that keep rural communities together and develop a more sustainable rural economy. 2. Rural Livelihoods - projects that focus on developing stronger, more sustainable farm and rural enterprises with the aim of halting the decline of the rural economy. 3. Farmers of the Future - projects that help improve skills and increase opportunities of taking up rural careers, in particular in farming. The deadline for grant applications is 5pm on Thursday, 8 October 2015. For details, click here. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

Summer Notes from Beeston Common The summer of 2015 has been summed up as rather cool and wetter than average and I think locally that is definitely the case. It has certainly been reflected in the low numbers of certain butterflies and most dragonflies recorded, especially the second generation of butterflies. Some spring butterflies, however, seemed to have a slightly extended season with both Orange-tip and Green Hairstreak being recorded into the second week of June.

Following a spell of thundery weather coming up from the south a male Red-veined Darter dragonfly was spotted (6 June) resting on a path by regular Commons recorder, Mark Clements. Later in the same day a female darter turned up. These Dragonflies are continental species that seem to be turning up in the UK more frequently and may have on occasions also

Banded Demoiselle

bred. For one night only (11 June) Cherry Farrow reported hearing the ‘churring’ of a Nightjar at 11pm. Up to a few years ago these nocturnal birds were more frequently seen and heard over the Commons. In fact in 2007 was one perched on the roof of my house! Work took me away for most of June but Mark continued recording and spotted a Broad-bordered Bee-hawk moth (15 June), Hobby (16 June) and Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnet moth (21 June), however, an interesting discovery (22 June) was a Tortoise Shieldbug. This bug is predominantly a southern species although the Norfolk and Suffolk Brecks are also frequented. It is another insect that is advancing northwards in response to the shifts in climate conditions. Another Hobby was noted by Mark (29 June). The start of July promised some warmer weather and again (2 July) a Hobby was spotted by Mark as were two Turtle Doves. Turtle Doves were a former breeding bird of the Commons but following national trends, where there has been a 95% population decline, these delightful birds have been ‘lost’. Grass Snakes have occurred on the Commons but are very

Privet Hawkmoth

elusive so to see two in a day (4 July) Mark was very lucky. Bee Orchids can also be elusive so the presence of these pretty flowers in the north-east corner marsh was a treat. The White Admiral made its first appearance on the edge of the central marsh. This butterfly is usually seen singly or at the most two together but was noted on a number of occasions throughout the Commons. A new arrival to the site was the Horse Chestnut Leaf-miner. This is the larvae of a micro-moth that has become a pest. It arrived in the UK from Europe in 2002 and was first discovered in Norfolk in 2004. The moth was first described in 1984 from Macedonia but the mines have since been found in preserved Horse Chestnut leaves in herbarium collections dating back to 1879. Its spread through Europe has been calculated at 60km per year facilitated by man through accidental transportation, either by road or rail. Although the trees are not killed they are less able to photosynthesize and therefore are less productive in producing ‘conkers’ and may be more susceptible to disease. By mid-July more dragonflies were on the wing with Brown Hawker, Emperor Dragonfly, Keeled Skimmers and the beautiful metallic blue Banded Demoiselle males making an appearance. A small striking yellow and black soldier-fly, known as the Four-barred Major (most soldier-flies in recent years have been given military sounding English names) was noted (12 July) resting on foliage. A Heath Bumblebee was also noted by Nick Owens. The butterfly list for 2015 now reached 22 species with the emergence of the Purple Hairstreak (14 July). This small butterfly likes to fly around the tops of oak trees on sunny days – very rarely coming down to ground level. Also this day Mark found a Humming-bird Hawk-moth. The final resident butterfly species of the summer was noted (20 July). This was the White-letter Hairstreak, so-called because of the white ‘W’ mark on the underside of its wings. A moth-trap run overnight (25 July) produced over 30 species including the Large Elephant Hawk-moth and the Privet Hawk-moth. A brief visit of a Little Egret to the pond (28 July) was an unexpected sighting. At the end of the month, Whimbrel (a small relation of the Curlew) were noted passing over the Commons and a Ruddy Darter dragonfly was noted at the pond (31 July). Mark found a Red Long-horn beetle, a predominantly East Anglian species (1 August) and two Roesel’s Bush-crickets were seen (2 August), both as the un-winged and the winged forms, the latter found by Mark. A Moorhen and chick were also seen on the pond and a Slow-worm was found basking in the marshes. Andy Clarke reported a sighting of a Lesser Diving Beetle from the small southern pond. A micro-moth, that often sits on the yellow flowers of Common Fleabane, known as the Dark Fleabane Neb, was present (5 August). This is considered

Tachina Grossa a rare moth in Norfolk, occurring only in 10 of the 69 10km squares that cover the county. Two female Emerald Damselflies were seen (7 August) by Mark and were the first reports of this species since 1987. A large bumblebee-sized black fly with a yellowish face, Tachina grossa, was noted (9 August). This is a parasitic fly, which lays its eggs in large moth caterpillars. When the fly larvae hatch they eat their host but only non-vital parts, thus allowing the caterpillar to pupate. After pupation the fly larvae continues to eat its host and then pupates itself emerging from the host’s pupal case the following year. Also seen was the Bee-wolf, a wasp that attacks Honey Bees and paralyses them before flying off with the bodies to place them in a nesting burrow. These burrows can be up to 1 metre in length with 3 to 34 short lateral burrows at the end, each terminating in a cell. A male Emerald Damselfly was

Four-barred Major

also present at the small southern pond. The Emerald Damselflies bring the total number of damselfly and dragonfly species recorded this year to 17. Two long-horn beetles were noted on the Angelica flowers (22 August), the Golden-bloomed Grey and the Fairy-ring Long-horns. A Lesser Whitethroat and Willow Warbler were seen by Mark plus a third long-horn, the Spotted Long-horn beetle. The warblers represented the start of the autumn migration with many birds spotted along the coast. Another migrant, a Whinchat was also reported (24 August) by Mark. A pair of Crossbills flying over was an unexpected sighting made by Mark (25 August) with further observations of Lesser Whitethroats, Blackcap, Common Whitethroat, Willow Warbler and Chiffchaff for the next few days. Mark also had a brief view of a Spotted Flycatcher (29 August). Parts of the Commons are being cut as part of the fen restoration programme and this will be ongoing to around mid-September, by which time we shall be heading into the Autumn – will it be wet and windy or an ‘Indian summer’? Jamie’s Accident Repair Centre Wins Whitenoise 2015 Show ‘n’ Shine Best VW Splitscreen

In 2010, JARC bought a 1966 Volkswagen Splitscreen as a restoration project from Lone Star VW Company at Norwich. The Splitscreen underwent a 400 hour full nuts and bolts restoration, leaving nothing to go amiss. Most of the lower body panels all the way round, including all the floors, were completely shot with rust and needed replacing. Almost all the interior trim

was missing and it had no engine. It took a long time to source all the parts needed to complete the restoration project.

awards and the Newland family were delighted when their entry won Best Splitscreen.

Jamie took the Splitscreen to the VW Whitenoise event at Euston Park in Suffolk on 31 July – 2 August, for a family weekend away and to meet other VW enthusiasts. On the Sunday morning, Jamie’s two daughters Zaranne and Mia pleaded with their dad to enter the Splitscreen into the Show ‘n’ Shine competition, one of the main events of the weekend, with people travelling from far and wide. So, not to disappoint his girls, Jamie drove down to the arena where the competition took place. After leaving it in the judging ring all day, they all waited patiently for the results to be announced. One by one, the winners of each class were presented with their

King’s Arms and Cafe Britannia Rule at Aylsham Show The Aylsham Agricultural Show Association has awarded the Norfolk Hero Food and Drink Championship 2015 to the King’s Arms Coaching Inn in Swaffham and the President’s Individual Hero Award to Davina Tanner OBE of Café Britannia in Norwich. The King’s Arms Coaching Inn has received the highest accolade and took home the Ken Dye Memorial Salver, which is sponsored by Larking Gowen. “The Inn’s team is all round first class. Its involved in creating and developing new ideas, has made local produce key to the menu and uses local herbs and allotments and its great community spirit is laudable,” said Show President Tony Bambridge who handed over the top award at the event at Blickling on 31 August.

Mr Bambridge has warded the President’s Cup to Davina Tanner OBE who runs the newly established Café Britannia. He said “Davina identified the potential of the old officers’ mess of the Britannia Barracks, which is part of the prison. She then transformed the kitchen with the help of some of the inmates, creating a wonderful café at Mousehold Heath with fantastic views over Norwich. “Café Britannia offers good quality food, comfortable surroundings, great views, ensures a very good customer feel good factor and has well trained staff which are mostly inmates who gain new skills, and all this has been identified and accepted at a phenomenal rate by the now

hundreds of customers served every day. Well done, Davina, our individual Food Hero!”

Norfolk Hero Food and Drink Championship Winner 2015, owner Claire Evans and General Manager David Cox, said “It’s a bit of a shock as the other companies are all brilliant so we had strong competition!

The Sheringham Trawler agrees sponsorship deal with England’s Ladies Home Nations Sea Angling Team Lisa and Andy May, owners of one of Sheringham’s top Fish and Chip Restaurants and Takeaways, have agreed to sponsor England’s Home Nations Championship winning Ladies Sea Angling Team for the coming year, ahead of next year’s Championships that are to be staged along the North Norfolk coast. After their gold medal win at this year’s event, which was held in Wexford Ireland in July, the team are already preparing to defend their title in 2016. This year’s championship venues were Cheekpoint and Ballyhack, the fishing being staged on the Barrow estuary some 30 miles to the west. The two matches, both four hours long, saw catches of mostly eels and flounders. Fishing is based upon a catch and release system so that all fish are returned to the sea alive.

The Home Championships is an annual two-day contest between England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, Ireland having team members from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Each country is represented by Men’s, Junior’s, Youth and Ladies teams, each team consisting of five anglers, one reserve and a Manager. The current Ladies team is Wendy Metcalfe (Captain) and Kay Brown (Manager) from Holt, Rachael Jarman, Nicky Frewin and Becky Adams from Somerset, Heather Lindfield from The Wirral and Lorraine Perry (Reserve) from Southampton.

This year’s Home Nations Shore Angling Championship, which was staged over a four-day period from 1st to 4th July, saw team success for the other English teams who together

We Won! Kay Brown, Heather Lindfield, Nicky Frewin, Becky Adams, Wendy Metcalfe, Rachel Jarman

bagged three-team golds and one bronze medal.

Commenting on this year’s Ladies Championship, Team Captain Wendy Metcalf said “We had a very positive start with four section wins and a second, which could have easily been five, but unfortunately an eel broke free on my last pull in, so I had to settle on second place. After attending the second managers’ meeting we found out they had a five point lead over the Irish team which put us into brilliant position going into day two.” She continued “We knew on the final day of the championships we had a real chance of success in all of the categories, and although the Irish team took an early lead we kept up the pace and after a hard fought match and gaining valuable points for a couple of second place positions we ended the match with a score of 35 points and the Gold Medal” Wendy added “The ladies teams have only been part of the Home Championship since 2013. The Welsh team and I had campaigned for some years to be allowed to enter the competition and finally our governing body the Angling Trust agreed. In 2013 we won the silver medal followed in 2014 by a bronze and this year we got the gold, which we will do our best to achieve again in 2016”

Andy and Lisa May, owners of The Sheringham Trawler, said “With next year’s event being staged in North Norfolk and two of the team living in Holt it seemed the natural thing for us to do”. Andy continued “We are both proud to be sponsoring the Ladies Team; as a Fish and Chip Shop we have a natural connection to the sea, so when we heard of this opportunity we said yes straight away” Lisa added “Our first fish and chip shop was in Holt, so knowing that two of the team came from our home town we simply had to support them”. Team Manager Kay Brown and her sister Wendy Metcalfe are both delighted with the sponsorship from The Sheringham Trawler. Kay said “We normally cover all expenses ourselves and this can be very costly. The team is selected from all over England and this deal will help towards their travelling expenses and accommodation. This means that the ladies can concentrate on preparing for the matches and defending our title”. She continued “We would like to thank Andy and Lisa for their support; it means a great deal to us and we will do our best to bring home the medals in 2016 and if we do we will certainly be celebrating with fish and chips at The Sheringham Trawler”.

Will Your Will Work?

Written by Fiona Hewitt - Director and Head of Private Client Services at Hayes + Storr

The recent case of Ilott v Mitson gave rise to some sensationalist media coverage and comment “Where there’s a Will… the person who wrote it may not get their way” (the Guardian); and “ ‘Your Will can be ignored’ say Judges” (Daily Telegraph) are just two examples.

The facts of the case were briefly as follows: Melita Jackson died in 2004, leaving her estate of almost £500,000 to charities. Her only daughter, Heather Ilott, a 50 year old mother of 5, was disinherited. Mrs Ilott had fallen out with her mother when she eloped at the age of 17. At the time of her mother’s death she was living in a rented house, and was reliant on state benefits.

Mrs Ilott made a claim against her mother’s estate, and was initially awarded £50,000. She appealed against this in the High Court on the grounds that it was too little, but the original order was then overturned in favour of the charities. When she appealed again, the Court of Appeal decided that she should receive a payment from the estate, and in the end she was awarded around a third of the estate.

Despite the media fuss over this and other similar recent cases, claims by disinherited children are nothing new.

Faced with such claims, the court must take into account a number of factors, including the financial resources and needs of the applicant and beneficiaries, the deceased’s obligations and responsibilities to both the applicant and other beneficiaries, and any relevant disabilities. The conduct of the parties can also be taken into account.

Mrs Ilott and her family were in financial need. Mrs Jackson had no particular connection to the charities she chose to benefit, and the Judge decided that she had acted out of spite rather than because she wanted to support their work. As for conduct, Mrs Ilott had made some attempts at reconciliation with her mother which had been rejected, and it was felt that the main cause of the broken relationship was Mrs Jackson herself.

It remains to be seen how much influence this case will have over future decisions, and all cases of this sort depend on the individual facts. However, the decision to award such a significant sum to someone who was otherwise completely disinherited has caused some unease for both lawyers and their clients. It is not uncommon to want to exclude certain family members from benefitting from an estate. If you decide to do this and you think it may cause problems, it is

advisable to take the following steps: 1. Have a professionally drafted Will in place, clearly and unambiguously setting out your intentions.

2. Make sure you tell your legal advisor all the facts and background so they can advise you properly on the risks and safeguards. 3.Leave a letter of wishes with your Will, explaining not only why you wish to exclude someone from the Will (or give them only a minimal gift), but also why you particularly wish to pass your estate to your chosen beneficiaries.

Cromer Carnival Parade

Exceptional weather and the biggest crowds at the Carnival in years set the stage for a spectacular parade. Winners included a colossal pirate ship representing In Touch Systems, which included an imposing giant skull at the stern, and an exhaustively detailed Japanese themed trailer representing Dunstable Arms, which became the overall winner of the event.

Some of the most memorable in the cavalcade included an unusually warlike gang of native Americans, a live rock band, and a giant fish that looked as if it were literally afloat.

In the words of Carnival Chairman, Tony Shipp “one of the better parades in several years, with a good standard of entry and a nice variety of floats”.

The winners of each of the classes were:

Class 1 Articulated Lorries: In Touch Systems

Other events performed on Carnival Day included a sweeping aerial display from The Blades and a show of many terrifying and incendiary stunts performed by The Royal Signals Motorcycle Display Team.

Class 3 Towed Trailers and Any Vehicle: Dunstable Arms

Tony wishes to thank everybody who responded to the call to join in with this year’s Carnival and hopes that future Carnivals can meet the new

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

At long last the phone line has been repaired and no more calls are being lost.

The young cat on the car park in Aylsham has now been caught and is being held safe until she can be neutered. Her kitten was also trapped and has found a new home. Tockey and Missy, two of our golden oldies, had been reserved and waiting for some decorating to be done before they went to their new home. Unfortunately, the people concerned had a change of heart, so these two lovely girls were put up for adoption once again. A recent article in ‘The Cat’ the magazine produced by Cats Protection for volunteers addressed a query on heart murmurs in cats and we know from experience how worried peoEmail: nwglazing@btconnect.com ple are when advised their cat has one. The article went on to state that one study of heart murmurs showed that around a third of cats do have one, that the murmur can come and go, and if heard one day may not be apparent the next. It also may only be heard when a cat is particularly stressed. The indications are that about 50 per cent of FREE LOCAL DELIVERY healthy cats with a murmur will have no underlying disease; MIKE WILKINS NTH WALSHAM AREA it may stem from another unrelated disease to the heart or may even be a completely insignificant “innocent murmur”. Heart murmurs are graded according to their severity and, again, can vary from day to day.
