Aylsham Food Festival 2018

Music, magic and memories are on the menu at this year’s Aylsham Food Festival.

Presented by Slow Food Aylsham, the ever-popular three-day event returns in October (from Friday 5 to Sunday 7 October) with a packed weekend of old favourites and family entertainment.

This year, the Festival headliner will be one of Norfolk’s most celebrated chefs, Richard Hughes. Richard, proprietor and food campaigner will launch the festival at An Evening with Richard Hughes at Aylsham High School on Friday 5 October, when he will talk about his 40 years in the heat of the kitchen - from pot-washer to chef-director of The Assembly House and proprietor of the Richard Hughes Cookery School.

Banana Ukulele Band

Alongside regular features like the Country Market, Farmers’ Market and Slow Brunch will be Norfolk favourite, folk musician and cartoonist, Tony Hall, plus the walkabout musical act Banana Ukulele Band. As if that wasn’t enough, magician and children's entertainer, Robbie James, will also be on hand to entertain visitors to the party. SFA chairman, Patrick Prekopp said “While the focus of the festival will, of course, be on food and particularly local produce, we want to make people think differently about food. It should be fun and a family affair and we hope to sprinkle a bit of magic and stardust around.” The programme kicks off a week earlier with a ‘fringe taster’ — Rosie With Cider, on Friday 28 September at the town hall. Father and daughter David and Rosie Warren, from Aylsham, will demonstrate the art of cider-making using a cider press – accompanied by Tony Hall on melodeon. Bring your own apples for crushing and sample

David Warren

fresh apple juice, or David’s home-made scrumpy, or buy from the barrel. (starts 6.30pm tickets £1 at the door.)

The festival proper starts on Friday morning (6 October) with the weekly Country Market in the town hall where you can sample a wide range of home-baked, home-grown and home-made products. Later, it’s An Evening with Richard Hughes at Aylsham High School followed by a beef and ale pie supper prepared by the Slow Food group. (6.30 for 7pm ticket £15.) On Saturday morning, come and say "Yellow!" to the Banana Ukulele Band as well as jazz from local band, One Foot in the Groove. Both bands will be entertaining visitors to the regular Farmers’ Market in the Market Place, where local chef and Festival favourite Derrol Waller, will be giving one of his popular cookery demonstrations. Or go inside the town hall where there will be a variety of attractions for both adults and children. And Saturday evening is devoted to wine tasting. Led by Brian Sullivan from Harper Wells wine merchants of Eaton, you’ll be able to sample a selection of wines and cheeses at the Heritage Centre at 7pm. Tickets £17 per head from the Heritage Centre. The Big Brunch on Sunday not only features the famous fry-up and the all-you-can-eat Continental buffet, but table magician Robbie James will be there too, so it promises to be an event perfect for all ages. Richard Hughes Catered and served by members of Slow Food Aylsham at the town hall, this family Brunch usually sells out fast, so don’t delay in getting your tickets, at £7 per person.

All tickets available at Barnwells Newsagents in the Market Place or phone 07519 361812.

Gunton Sawmill

A 10-year restoration program by Norfolk Industrial Archaeological Society and Norfolk Windmills Trust has finally allowed the ancient reciprocating frame saw to begin cutting timber again.

On 23 September, three decades on, the sawmill will be slicing up a holly tree to demonstrate what life was like in our gloomy industrial past.

Gunton sawmill is situated on a private park but the public is allowed to visit the mill between 2pm and 5 pm on open days. It is run by volunteers who are happy to explain how it all works and answer questions.

There is a small 'wood-trades' museum on site too, so there is plenty to see.

A recent collaboration between Gunton sawmill and Sheringham Museum enabled a cannon barrel, dredged up off-shore, to be fitted to a wooden carriage which is now on display at Sheringham.

Gunton's 200-year-old sawmill will give you a fascinating glimpse into Estate life.

Weybourne Folk Weekend

Weybourne Folk Weekend on 14/15/16 September is now in its 8th year. As usual most events are at Weybourne Village Hall (NR25 7AH) and are free apart from the Saturday Night Ceilidh/Barn Dance. We have always received generous support from Weybourne Community Fund and Blakeney Old Wild Rovers towards the overheads of this increasingly popular event, for which we are very grateful.

We kick-off on Friday evening at 7.30pm at the Village Hall with a free concert featuring ‘The Harvesters’, a very talented trio from Warwickshire whose speciality is bluegrass, americana old time/good time songs and dance. They performed at our first event back in 2011 and we are pleased to welcome them back. They will be staying for the

Slime Workshop at Mundesley Library

weekend. Local singers and musicians will support. We start at 1.30pm on Saturday 15 September with local performers followed by Chris Dodson and the Strumsters Ukulele Band from Ely - expect some George Formby songs (he did have Norfolk connections). Sarah O’Neill is a superb fiddle player who may bring accomplices. The Harvesters will put in another appearance.

1.5 miles to get to know the locality. Local performers then begin the afternoon at 1.30pm. Our main guest today is Flossie Malavialle, a French born singer/guitarist who brings her own unique brand of Geordie/Franglais banter together with a fine voice. The Harvesters will be with us again and Blakeney Old Wild Rovers will wind up proceedings for one more year.

Alternatively make your way to the back room of the Ship Inn for a free sing-around session with local singers and musicians. Both events are from 8pm until 11pm.

We have a licence to sell beer and tea and coffee will be available. You are also welcome to bring your own food/drinks/glasses to the Village Hall only. We appreciate that the 40’s weekend coincides this year but never mind. Folks in appropriate dress are welcome at all events.

Saturday evening provides a choice. The annual Ceilidh/Barn Dance at the Village Hall with ‘Blancoes Yard’.Always popular - it doesn’t matter whether you are familiar with the dances or not because full instructions are given and at ÂŁ6.50 it’s a bargain! You can bring your own drinks and a picnic to this event.

On Sunday 16 September we start at 12noon with our annual walk around the sea, cliffs and windmill -

Take quantities of cornflour, eyewash, shaving foam, drinking chocolate and several other substances. Mix together and spread liberally (often over the table, floor and body!). Add 14 youngsters and a few, slightly apprehensive parents, and you had the recipe for the recent highly successful slime making workshop held at Mundesley Library on the morning of 1 August. As the event unfolded the children were taught how to make slime and also given interesting facts about processes involved. Judging by the noise levels, the comments made afterwards and the fact that the session was over- subscribed, the day was viewed as a great success and there is talk of repeat sessions in the future. The session was headed by Helena from the Norfolk Library Service and was arranged by Sheila, our Library Manager, who was assisted by several Mundesley Library Friends.

Why not come along and join in the choruses or just revel in the general entertainment. We offer a raffle each day to help offset the costs of this fine weekend which can’t be beaten for value and top-class performances.

Further information is available from Tony Baylis 01263 588781 or tonyandcarmen@btinternet.com

This was just one of a series of events run by the Library and the Friends as part of the Annual Summer Reading Challenge which is arranged for children across the school holidays. The theme for this year is Mischief Makers which features Dennis & his friends from the Beano comic which is 80 years old this year. The presentation of awards and medals to the children who complete the challenge is on 18 September. In addition the Mundesley Library Friends are running two competitions – a colouring competition for the under 8s and another for older children to draw their favourite comic character or design a character. To book spaces or for further details of all events please contact the library on 01263 720702 during staffed hours.

church had been present in Thorpe Market for centuries. Most of them have now disappeared, in some cases as a direct result of the Great War.

We are preparing family trees, details of the homes they left behind and their military records, their regimental music.

In common with most rural villages, Thorpe Market lost 14 of their young men. Three are buried in the churchyard.

The church has so far managed to trace living relatives for 10 of the men who died, and we hope to see many of them at the service. A chance for ex village residents to renew old acquaintances.

We are still seeking information about Cecil Burdett who may have a Colby connection and the name Bates in his family, Hebert Keeler who died aged 36, having also fought in the Boer War and William Turner whose father came from Roughton.

Sunday 11 November 2018 marks one hundred years precisely since the signing of the armistice that brought an end to the First World War.

Happisburgh RNLI Volunteers put their Casualty Care Training to Good Use

On 2 September Humber Coastguard requested the help of Happisburgh RNLI to evacuate an 89 year old lady who had fallen on the beach at Ostend, north of the station. D-Class, D - 813 ‘Russell Pickering’ was the first to be launched to her aid with Tim Grimmer as helm and Martin Gibbs as crew, followed by the Atlantic 85, B - 899 ‘Howard Bell’ with Charlotte Siely at the helm and Jake Munday and Mark Defraine as crew. The D-class arrived on scene and beached on the

Ostend ramp before attending the patient, with the Atlantic dropping its crew ashore to help.

The crew joined the paramedic on scene before Bacton Coastguard and Mundesley fire service arrived.

After the patient was assessed and packaged into a lifeboat’s basket stretcher she was moved off the beach into a house to await the arrival of an ambulance to take her to hospital. Both lifeboats were stood down and returned to station. Once the lifeboats had returned to station the crew were called back into action! This time to Cart Gap ramp where a lady in her 50’s had taken a fall over a dog and injured her knee on the ramp.

Their casualty care was put into practice again. The patient was assessed and unable to move her leg and was given oxygen before being put in the station’s second basket stretcher and moved into the station for care to carry on while awaiting the arrival of the ambulance to transport her to hospital.

If police catch someone they suspect Of breaking one of our laws, They cannot bring them to justice, Without proof or probable cause. You hear of a case that is pending, But it’s delayed because there are flaws. It’s got to be checked all over again To find proof or probable cause. One cannot jump to conclusions, Despite a gut feeling that gnaws. Even though you’re convinced of his guilt, You’ve got to have probable cause. So, if you suspect that he’s cheating, Don’t shred all the clothes in his drawers, Unless you’re sure you’ve got your facts right, Or, at least, you’ve got probable cause!

The crews are always pleased to put their skills into practice when they are called upon. After all this the volunteers still had both boats to sort, refuel and

Titch, Joe and Digger came into my care after their mum had died.

Meet Boris!

Boris was handed in by a member of the public, to a worker at the National Trust in Brancaster, as they were working this way the next day. I was contacted and he came into my care weighing only 90grms. He had a set-back needing treatment for a parasitic problem called coccidian. Following treatment he now weighs 200grms and is doing well. There is usually more then one hoglet in a litter and as such he was feeling lonely so I have given him a substitute sibling to cuddle up to.

New Centre for North Norfolk Riding for the Disabled

Our established charity has relocated from Weybourne to a new riding centre at Hall Farm, Sloley Road, Worstead NR28 9RS.

Starting on 11 September at 10am we offer local children with disabilities from two

schools and some individuals, the opportunity to enjoy the therapeutic benefits from riding horses and ponies on a regular basis.

The transformations experienced by our riders is hugely rewarding for all involved. Volunteers feel they are giving something back to their local community, and riders gain a real sense of achievement, and a pride in their new-found skills.

Divorcing couples forced to embellish allegations in divorce petitions Making the decision to divorce can be an incredibly difficult. Many couples will want the process to be as straight forward as possible at a time where emotions are running high. Unfortunately, the current legal framework can cause further complications for couples.

There is only one ground for divorce and that is that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. Currently, the law states that this has to be proven by relying upon one or more of the following facts: "unreasonable behaviour", adultery, desertion, 2 years separation with consent, or 5 years separation.

If you have not been separated for the requisite period then you have a difficult decision to make. Either you wait, or you rely upon one of the other facts which means apportioning blame to the other party. "Unreasonable behaviour" is the fact most commonly cited but by its very nature can cause a whole host of problems in the relationship. It can cause animosity, cause problems in reaching solutions in terms of the finances and children and make it difficult to end a relationship on good terms. The case of Tini Owens has been in the media spotlight recently as she tried to divorce her husband of 40 years on the basis of his "unreasonable behaviour". The Supreme Court unanimously rejected her arguments and concluded that his behaviour was not sufficiently unreasonable to grant a divorce. Tini was understandably devastated by this news as she now has to remain married until 2020.

A recent survey has found that couples feel pressured into exaggerating allegations in a divorce petition, or to "bend the truth", so that the reasons given are more likely to be found sufficient, if challenged. This is because couples are becoming more and more concerned that a petition could be rejected by the Court as was seen in the Owens case.

Contested divorce proceedings are rare. In fact less than 1% of all divorces are defended each year. This is because it can be extremely costly, complicated and many view it as unproductive. Although the number of contested cases are relatively small, people are clearly concerned about it happening. This is probably due to the widespread reporting of the Owens case.

The Owens decision has prompted debate about the appropriateness of the current legislation and the need for review. Should you be forced to stay trapped in a marriage that you consider is over even if the other party doesn't agree? The current law makes it difficult to end a relationship on good terms, due to the requirement to apportion blame. This directly conflicts with other principles in family law such as reducing confrontation and conflict and encouraging couples to talk directly to find the right solution for them.

In a recent survey of more than 1,000 divorcees, 80% said they would rather have the option of a 'no-fault' approach to divorce. More than 1 in 4 surveyed said that attributing fault caused more tension between them and their ex-partner, and reduced their previous hopes of being able to divorce in a friendly manner. Not only does the process of attributing fault add to their own anger, it can also cause upset to other parties, such as their children.

If the law were to provide for 'no-fault' divorce, it may reduce bitterness between the parties meaning more amicably settlements which could save them time and money. However, some argue this approach would make the process of getting a divorce a lot easier, increasing the number of divorces and may be seen as an "easy way-out", but if the law isn't updated there may be a rise in exaggerated and embellished allegations which has its own problems!

NORTHREPPS ROYAL BRITISH LEGION BRANCH

Our Branch was honoured to have our Standard carried, and our wreath laid on behalf of us, at the GP90 event.

At the moment, we do not have a Standard Bearer, and we thank Peter Howes of Wymondham Branch for his services, and also Colin Chambers of North Walsham Branch for laying our wreath at the Menin Gate.

Members felt in fact, that they were part of this tribute to all those brave men lost and never returned from the Great War. It is hoped that Peter and Colin will be able to come along to one of our Branch Meetings, and hear from them, their memories of being involved in this very emotional event.

At our first 2018 Branch Revival Meeting on 3 September, members wereable to see framed photographs of Peter and Colin just before the muster for the march to the Menin Gate. Also on display was our Branch Certificate at the opening of our Branch in 1949. These are now displayed with our World War 1 in St. Mary's Church, Northrepps, which we placed there in August 2014. We have had enquiries from descendants of those named on our War Memorial from all over the country and beyond.

Turn Tail

How can you go off and leave me? Just turn tail and walk out on me? After everything I’ve done for you, To leave shows such disloyalty! When we first met, you were homeless. I welcomed you into my life. Is this the way you repay me? Your perfidy cuts like a knife! If you walk out now, then it’s over, I won’t be your personal doormat! If this is your choice, then so be it. You are a most ungrateful cat! Frances Wraight

Car Show Success for Hospice

The Norfolk Hospice hosted its first ever Car Show & Family Fun Day on Sunday at the beginning of September at The Royal Sandringham Estate near the Visitors Centre. It was a brilliant day and well attended with over 3000 attendees. Nearly £10,000 was raised from the event for the Hospice. There were lots of attractions including Grays funfair rides, miniature donkeys, over 50 craft stalls selling everything from jewellery to Gin, food stalls, a bar and live entertainment. Over 120 car enthusiasts arrived on the day to display their cars. There was a wide range of cars on display from a 1965 VW camper van to a Ford Falcon. They also had some car clubs attend on the day and are grateful for their support. The Mayor of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk judged the car show competition which was sponsored by Adrian Flux. Winner of Best in Show was a Yellow Opel Manta and the Mayors Choice Ford Capri 1600 Laser. Jessica Walker, Community Fundraiser at The Norfolk Hospice said “We would

The concert will include this Requiem as well as Ralph Vaughan Williams aptly named Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace) and Christian Soldiers from Patrick Hawes’ Great War Symphony which will be premiered in the Royal Albert Hall on 9 October. If you enjoy the day you may want to think about joining the choir – new singers in all voice parts are most welcome without audition.”

like to thank everyone who attended our first car show and family fun day. We had a great day and are overwhelmed by the support of the local community. The money raised from this event will go towards helping us to continue to provide the care and support to people (and their families) in the local community living with life-shortening illnesses. I would like to say a massive thank you to our sponsors, everyone who displayed their car, brought along their stall, volunteered and performed at the event and KLFM. It was such a successful event and we couldn’t have done it without you! We look forward to seeing you all next year.” The fundraising team at the Hospice are already busy planning next year’s event. A second Winter Ball is being organised by The Norfolk Hospice after an inaugural event in 2017 raised over £12,000. Taking place at Pentney Abbey on Saturday 10 November, this year’s event will transform the stunning abbey into an Alpine Ski Lodge. Surrounded by 35 acres of grounds and miles of stunning Norfolk countryside, Pentney Abbey is a magical and historic place with a past reaching all the way back to the 14th century. The Barn was used as a medieval banquet hall, making it the perfect location for an evening event. Lindsey Atkin, Community Fundraising Manager at the Hospice said,“We are really grateful to Pentney Abbey for their support. Last year’s ball was so successful. ” Tickets are £65 each. This includes a welcome drink and sumptuous three-course meal. There will also be fantastic entertainment during the evening from Eddie Seales Big Band as well as an auction and lucky dip raffle. Monthly Horoscopes by Claire Manion Astrologer, October 2018

Libra ♎ 21st September- 21st October With a new moon in your sign on the 9th a new start looks to be on the horizon. You could have some interesting and creative ideas. This is the time to be brave and try them out, who knows, they may just work.

Taurus ♉ 20th April - 21st May Conversations with your partner around the 10th could be very revealing and lead to new insights. Things should come to a head around the full moon in your sign on the 24th when emotional situations look to be unpredictable: change is in the air.

Sagittarius ♐ 21st November- 21st December You may want to charge ahead with a money making project but take time out before you plunge in. Listen to your intuition as it should be strong at the moment. This will save you a lot of frustration and wasted energy in the long term.

Aries ♈ 21st March - 20th April You may want to get stuck in to working towards a long held dream. If others are involved, remember to consider their point of view as they could help you achieve your goal; being independent only gets you so far.

Gemini ♊ 21stMay - 21st June The beginning of the month sees you in a light and sociable mood. However, around the 10th you may need to do some in-depth research. This will require your energy and focus but should bring new opportunities for growth and learning.

Scorpio ♏ 21st October- 21st November October looks to be a busy month for you. If you have been feeling a bit stuck, things should start to move more easily. Look out for useful communication and lucky breaks particularly around the 15th and the 27th.

Capricorn ♑ 21st December – 20th January Friends are encouraging you to have some fun and enjoy yourself. Take their lead and accept those invitations particularly around the 24th when you may get an offer to try something new and exciting. Go for it, the sky is the limit.

Cancer ♋ 22nd June -22nd July You may be feeling quite romantic this month and want to spend time with that special someone. Perhaps you could get a weekend away together or have a few cosy nights in just enjoying each other’s company.

Aquarius ♒ 20th January - 18th February You may have some good opportunities in your career. This is great but you could find yourself taking on too much. Pacing yourself and working steadily can be frustrating but will give you the results you need and enough energy to enjoy it.

Virgo ♍ 21st August- 21st September In-depth discussions look to be on the cards. These could well be of a sensitive and emotional nature, so don’t be surprised if someone confides in you; your helpful and practical approach may be just what they need.

If you would like to know more, why not contact me for a personalised reading? Claire Manion Email: broadskyastrology@gmail.com Website: www.broadskyastrology.co.uk Facebook: www.facebook.com/Broadskyastrology/

Leo ♌ 22nd July- 21st August Family issues may be taking up a lot of your time and you could be yearning for the past. The full moon on the 24th is a great time to spread your wings and leave your worries behind for a while. Book that last minute trip to the sun, you will feel so much better for it.

September is here

I am wandering through a little wood on this bright September day, my companions are grey rabbits who help me on my way. An owl swoops past me and the rowan berries fall, I see ivy growing thickly on a broken stone wall. A few bright poppies make my pathway light, and I notice that some blackberries are now plump and ripe. The leaves are changing colour, autumn is almost here, although the sun is shining there's a nip in the air. The sky is clouding over, was that a drop of rain? Never mind, I can walk this way again.

It won’t just be spoken questions - there will be pictures, music, and all sorts of brain puzzlers on our big screen TV to pit your wits against - and it is aimed at the whole family - young, old and everyone in-between! Teams of four would be ideal, and tickets are just a fiver each, and included is a delicious Buffet Supper, with teas, coffees and cold drinks available too, or if you feel a drop of alcohol might help the little grey cells, bring your own along with you. Please book in advance, as this helps with the numbers for the food. There will be prizes for the winning team, booby prizes for the dunces, and a ‘what’s that in the bag’ guessing game to keep you occupied while you enjoy the delicious buffet! To book, ‘phone us on 01236 860844 now - you can even pay by credit or debit card, and all the proceeds, including those from our excellent raffle, will benefit the Copeman Centre’s own fundraising. Tackling difficult areas with fillers. Why do fillers frequently look so false? Why you need to see an experienced doctor to minimise risks of going under the needle

A few years ago the Sunday Times did an article on downside of fillers called ‘The Joker Face’. “You’ve seen this face – it’s everywhere. There’s something muzzle-like about the nose and mouth. The lips are taut and bulbous, and a little wonky when they smile. In extreme cases, the cheeks sit like ping pong balls under spongy skin, eyes peering out of puffy sockets. The ‘pillow face’, our current answer to the 1990s wind-tunnel look, is down to dermal fillers. These semi-permanent gels are injected into the lips, cheeks and the lines between the nose and the mouth in a bid for youthful plumpness. Trouble is, the result is often not eternal youth, but a face like a water-retentive lion …"

Unfortunately things have got worse with this becoming almost the normal. Facial rejuvenation is an art and a science. It requires a thorough understanding of facial anatomy, facial ageing, skin, soft tissue and bone structure. This knowledge and skill requires years of study and practice. Artful injection treatments can produce some very nice and pleasing results. ‘The results should whisper and not scream’.

The temples, chin, jawline, tear trough and forehead are difficult to inject so you need an experienced doctor to do these and not someone who injects fillers ‘on the side’. Ask your practitioner how many filler injections they do and can they show some before and after photos. When injecting fillers it is important to stay away from the important structures such as nerves and blood vessels. So a deep understanding of anatomy is essential.

When the jaw angle gets blurred, it makes a huge difference in how the person is perceived. We can inject fillers to contour the jawline, angle of the jaw and chin. Botulinum toxin injections remain popular for this area as in Nefertiti lift. As we age, we start to lose a little chin projection. This can be restored using fillers.

Another area where age-related changes can be very visible is the temple. There is not only loss of fat but also loss of other soft tissues and bone. Additionally, patients can develop sun damage, skin laxity and muscle thinning. We are trying to replace a three-dimensional, multi-structural loss

with one or two injection. We can usually get most of the temporal areas filled effectively with one or two injections. That minimizes the risk of danger and produces very nice and effective yet subtle rejuvenation.

We routinely inject fillers in frown lines and forehead lines but this is a tricky area to inject-even for very experienced practitioners. A more comprehensive approach to the forehead involves three-dimensional forehead reflation. This approach differs drastically from simply filling lines because it requires placing fairly substantial amounts of filler on underlying bone while avoiding the blood vessels. This is a challenging technique that can produce beautiful results.

There is more to dermal filler injections than simple line filling. Strategic placement of small volumes can produce very nice and natural results and avoid so called ‘pillow face’.

Wills Wills & LPAs LPAs –AM MUST UST H HAVE AVE

At Silver and Ward we pride ourselves in giving our clients peace of mind with our expert legal advice explained in plain English. We work extremely hard during our lives to provide for family and loved ones. However, the majority of us fail to ensure that continues if we become unwell, or when we pass away. So, how can you guarantee that?

(1) LPAs (Lasting Power of Attorney) – are a safety net for you and your loved ones if you were to be involved in an accident, or have a diagnosis leading to diminished mental capacity. It is incredibly important to have them in place no matter how old you are. As surprising as it sounds, your spouse, or partner, does not have any legal right to make health decisions on your behalf, or deal with your money and property if you are unable to.

(2) Wills – can help you to secure a future for those you leave behind. If you do not leave a Will the Law decides who will inherit your estate. This may not be what you want and it is unlikely to provide adequately for your family. A Will prepared by Silver and Ward can provide reassurance and peace of mind for you and your family and help reduce any risks and pitfalls that may arise in the future. We will write it in plain English to avoid any misunderstandings. We offffer fixed fees for Wills and LPAs so you know immediately how much it is going to cost and a FREE INITIAL APPOINTMENT. We can meet with you in your home, Nursing Home, or Hospital at no extra cost.

Lear’s youngest and favourite daughter, “How sharper than a remains silent, saying that she has no words to serpent's tooth it is to have describe how much she loves her father. Lear quickly learns that this was a bad decision. a thankless child!” Goneril and Regan lose no time in undermining

Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr I have long used ‘King Lear’ as a metaphor for caution when carrying out succession planning. Richard Eyre’s powerful and unsettling production for the BBC reminded me of its timelessness. As it is the journalistic ‘silly season’, I hope you will allow me some licence.

Quick plot reminder : The 80-year-old King Lear decides to retire and divides his kingdom of ancient Britain among his daughters, Goneril, Regan and Cordelia, according to their affection for him. Lear's older daughters give their father flattering answers and so inherit but Cordelia,

the little authority that Lear still holds. Unable to believe that his beloved daughters are betraying him, Lear slowly goes insane. Lear is a powerful exploration of greed, love, power and mortality - all themes in the working life of the private client lawyer. Less romantic (and, thankfully, less gory) modern equivalent cases scatter the Law Reports over the centuries.

The ever popular International Garden Photographer of the Year exhibition returns to the National Trust’s Sheringham Park and this year it will feature images from a special category, celebrating the great landscape designer, Humphry Repton.

This year sees the winners of our collaborative Humphry Repton special award exhibited for the first time. Sheringham Park is often cited as Repton's most favourite work so this makes for a rather special and meaningful exhibition that is intimately linked to the host venue.’

Malcolm Fisher, Visitor Experience Manager at Sheringham Park revealed ‘Many of the plants at Sheringham Park were brought to our shores by the plant hunter Ernest ‘Chinese’ Wilson, so it’s fitting that this exhibition also showcases plants from all corners of the world. We’re so excited to see the Repton category on display, as a great artist himself, I’m sure Repton would have been pleased to see his work captured in this way.’

Bodham and Selbrigg wind turbines – NNDC confirms appeal against legal decision

North Norfolk District Council will challenge High Court ruling North Norfolk District Council has confirmed it will appeal a High Court decision which would lead to a key wind turbine decision being heard via the written representation method instead of a Public Inquiry. Last month it was announced that the High Court had overturned an appeal by NNDC which sought to ensure a Public Inquiry was used in the next stage of the Bodham and Selbrigg wind turbines planning process, as opposed to written representations. NNDC felt it was important to give the public the chance to make their point directly to an Inspector rather than it being a desktop exercise. The written representations would reduce the voice of the local people who have for so long resisted the building of these turbines on the Cromer ridge. North Norfolk District Council has consistently supported the objectors to these turbines over a number of years. Cllr Sue Arnold, North Norfolk District Council’s Conservative Cabinet Member for Planning and Planning Policy, said “I have received so many emails expressing disappointment and dismay at this decision and continuing support for the Council’s stance on the subject.

TOPstitch at Cley Marshes

Norwich based TOPstitch textile and embroidery group returns to the Norfolk Wildlife Trust Visitor Centre gallery from 19 September to 2 October inclusive.

Their exhibition will celebrate the diversity of our county – coast, countryside, flora and fauna – in a wide variety of stitch techniques and media both contemporary and traditional including a stunning monochrome display of seed heads.

Free admission, open daily 10am-4 pm www.topstitch.org.uk facebook: TOPstitch Norwich Embroiderers’ Group

“It is so appreciated knowing there is so much support for the stance we have taken in opposing these applications. We will be appealing this latest decision. This course of action could be costly for the Council but it is the view of the majority of members that this is a fight for democracy on behalf of the local people and in defence of our beautiful countryside.” Cllr Sarah Butikofer, North Norfolk District Council’s Liberal Democrat Group Leader, said “Whilst we are very aware of the financial implications for the Council, it is essential in a democracy that everyone has the ability to have their voice heard. As guardians of our beautiful countryside we have a duty to ensure we have done everything possible to protect it.” It was expected that the Planning Inspectorate would hold a new joint Public Inquiry to re-consider the appeals.

The long running case also saw an earlier application for an 86.5m-tall turbine rejected by NNDC in 2012, approved by a Planning Inspector on appeal but that decision was overturned in the High Court in February 2014.

Exhibition at Norfolk Wildlife Trust Cley Visitor Centre, Coast Road, Cley NR25 7SA 25% of all sales is donated to Norfolk Wildlife Trust www.topstitch.org.uk

Bradfield Cricket Club opens new Clubhouse with ‘Big Society’ help

North Norfolk District Council has granted Bradfield Cricket Club £15,000 from Big Society Fund towards refurbishment work of their clubhouse Bradfield Cricket Club had a special guest last month before their league match against Horsford - North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Leader, Councillor John Lee, was on hand to present the Club with a plaque celebrating the Council’s £15,000 grant from its Big Society Fund.

This was the first serious fixture at the ground since Bradfield opened their refurbished clubhouse on 4 August, part of a £120,000 project to secure cricket at one of the best grounds in Norfolk. The new clubhouse, on the edge of the pitch which Bradfield have played on since 1845, now boasts new changing facilities, toilets, kitchen, bar and social area, which together will provide better facilities, especially for children’s cricket at the Club. North Norfolk District Council has run the Big Society Fund for six years now and it has benefitted many community groups across the District, with

over £1.6m being handed out to 219 community projects in that time.

“We are seeing many more children coming into the Club – and run cricket for all ages mainly from our events in school holidays and our coaching in local schools, and we aim to have all eleven primary schools in our local area coaching cricket within the next five years.”

Cllr Lee, who chairs the Big Society Fund Board, said “Providing these grants is one of the best jobs I have as Leader of the Council. So many groups have benefitted from the Big Society Fund and our grant to Bradfield has enabled them to not only lever in the rest of the funding they needed, but also to get all of their own membership behind the project. Their new facility can only help the club thrive, especially with the facilities for children’s cricket so near to North Walsham.”

MAKE YOUR MIND UP TIME “Where shall we go today, dad?”, “Let's go on the pier” “The sea looks very deep now I don't think that's a good idea”

“Shall we sit on the beach then and get the sand between our toes” “I haven't got the towels now I must sit on one of those”.

Peter Murphy, Bradfield’s Chairman added “The new clubhouse here is just brilliant. It’s taken many years to get us here, but the grant from NNDC was the thing that really made people believe it was really possible.

“What shall we do today dad?”, “Let's walk on the prom”, “I must go and buy a hat then I do burn in the sun!”

People here have worked tirelessly since to get the other funding in and then to do the work required, and the result is now here for all to see. And we have had good support from NNDC all the way, with them helping us with our cricket development plan as well.

“ I know, there's the ice cream parlour, a strawberry sundae for me”, “That might be all right in the afternoon But they don't serve coffee or tea”

Holt Rugby Club Anniversary Game On Sunday 14 October Holt Rugby Club will be holding an important anniversary game. They will be playing an Eastern Counties XV at Bridge Road (kick off 3pm). Fifty years to the day, Eastern Counties were Holt’s opponents when Holt opened their new ground at the venue. Several of the Holt team who played in that game have continued their involvement with the Holt club and will be on the touchlines as spectators. On that day Holt will be staging youth games from 11am.

“Maybe a trip round the harbour? The boats are very safe” “What!,it will make a mess of my make up With salt spray on my face”.

Action hots up as Club raises £2000 in special golf day

The competition and weather were hot at the Mundesley Golf Club am-am event as fund raising soared with the temperature. Seventeen teams took part in the event, where entry fees, a raffle and auction raised £2000 towards Club funds as it continues its drive to attract new members of all ages and abilities. Scoring was high with the aptly named team 'Under Par' (Andrew Keates, Tony Bird, Joe Andrzejewski and Pat Kerrison) holding first position with 154 points for most of the afternoon. But they were pipped to the prize by the penultimate team on the course Ben's Team (David Clarke, Diana Clarke, Adam Brown and Stephen Hall) came in with 158 points to take the honours. Club chairman Donald Stuart said “The weather was marvellous, course in great condition and thanks to our hardworking catering and bar staff everyone was well fed and watered.”
