Millfield Primary School’s New Goal
Millfield Primary School in North Walsham has a mammoth fundraising task ahead of them this year.
Last year the Friends of Millfield raised money to replace part of the Jungle Gym that became no longer fit for purpose. This year they are driving forwards with more fundraising for new equipment.
The School Council were part of the working group who helped select the new piece of equipment, which has now been installed. The Hammock Net and upgrade of the safety surface, which was needed, has cost £7000, £3000 of which was raised by the Friends from the generosity of the friends, parents and staff of the school.
They need to raise more funds to carry on replacing items of equipment. Although the equipment has served the school well providing hours of fun and helping develop the children’s physical fitness, after 20 years many pieces need upgrading!
The Friends have organised a Craft/Gift and Pamper Fayre at North Walsham Community Centre on Thursday 8 November starting at 7pm. All ticket sales will be going towards the next piece of equipment. There will be lots on offer including massage, reflexology, handmade crafts and gifts plus loads more, not forgetting plenty of delicious cake!

People in North Walsham can now have their say on priorities in the local area The town’s Safer Neighbourhood Action Panel (SNAP) has decided to open up its meetings to the local community once again.
Members of the public who attend the meeting will be given a rundown of local crime and policing issues – including any crime trends, crime prevention advice and on-going initiatives.
The first meeting is on Wednesday 12 December between 7-8pm at the Atrium in the grounds of North Walsham High School. Attendees will get the chance to raise concerns and influence the three priorities that will be taken on by the panel.
This meeting will be the first time in two years that the meetings have been open to the public. Panel members, which include representatives from local councils and organisations, will con-

tinue to attend the meetings.
North Walsham Beat manager Charlotte Reed said: “It’s hoped that these meetings will be a two-way exchange of information. As well as informing local people about what is going on in their area, we want to hear from them about their concerns and what we can do to solve them. By re-opening these meetings up to the public we are aiming to get a more balanced and representative selection of priorities”.
The current priorities, which will be up for discussion at the next meeting, were decided at a meeting on 3 October. They are:
• Vehicle anti-social behaviour on Midland Rd
• Anti-social behaviour within Millfield Primary School grounds • Anti-social behaviour around Sadlers Wood.
The North Walsham Safer Neighbourhood Team have also organised some street surgeries, for anyone who is unable to attend the SNAP meeting. There are on • Saturday 3 November 2012 at Sainsbury’s, North Walsham between 11am-2pm. • Friday 23 November at North Walsham Library between 10am-12noon.
For further information about the North Walsham Safer Neighbourhood team, or to contact them, visit www.norfolk.police.uk or call the non-emergency number 101.
Churches Together in North Walsham Christmas Lunch
I know it is early to be thinking of this or any other Christmas event but we are already planning this year’s lunch on Christmas Day.
All that we ask is do you live in North Walsham and will you be on your own on Christmas Day? If the answer is yes why not consider joining us at the Community Centre for a traditional Christmas lunch which is served at 1pm and will finish off with tea and Christmas cake and listening to the Queen’s speech.
The lunch is organized by Churches Together in North Walsham, free of charge, supported financially by local charities and businesses. You do not have to be a member of a church to be more than welcome.
If you would like more information or an application form, if you have not previously attended, please write to Mr. R. Vincent, 14 Marshgate, North Walsham. NR28 9EE or email Roger.vincent@hotmail .co.uk

has been very busy lately, enjoying life to the full. What a wonderful club this is every month there is something different going on and oh, how our members enjoy themselves. This month’s meeting was held at the Community Centre on Thursday 4 October and there to entertain us was the singing duo " The Squeegees " who sang a medley of songs from the 50s/60s, also a few oldies for us to sing along to. They were brilliant which means they will get the call again card! We would like to thank Cynthia Clare for baking our beautiful birthday cake - the club is now celebrating its 67th year. We cannot thank our members enough for all the support that they give to the club each month by bringing small raffle prizes and second hand clothing, and a special thanks goes to Stephanie and Kath who raised over £300 for the club on a two day charity event on the tombola stall. September was a great month for the club as well with an additional visit to the Cromer Pier Show, attended by 38 members who all enjoyed it very much. Our raffle this month cashed in at £60 and the second hand clothes stall raised £16.50. It was very nice to see some new faces at the club this month, but there is always room for a few more we meet the first Thursday of every month at the Community Centre at 2pm.

Very Humourous
North Norfolk Speakers Club hosted the Area Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest on Wednesday 3rd October at Rossi’s Leisure, North Walsham. The event was well supported by members and guests from North Norfolk, Norwich, Dereham and Brandon Speakers Clubs. President Gillian Beecroft opened the evening with a welcome speech before handing the floor to the Contest Chair, David McNaughter. Contestants delivered speeches of a very high calibre and Stuart Richards from North Norfolk Speakers Club consolidated his success at club level by winning the Humorous Speech Contest, against stiff competition. James Allison from Norwich Speakers club ably secured his well deserved place in the next round, winning the Table Topics Contest.
Both successful contestants will represent the Area at the Regional stage of the contest to be held in Cambridge on Saturday 13th October. For further details about North Norfolk Speakers Club please visit www.nnsc.co.uk or contact Gillian 01692 650250.
SHUDDERING SPIDERS!
IT’S HALLOWE’EN ON THE POPPY LINE
Hallowe’en half term starts on 27 October, and the Poppy Line is ready with a week that’s full of treats and more than a spooky trick or two.
Ghoulies and ghosties abound! At Weybourne Station, if you’re feeling brave enough, you can enter the spook-laden Hallowe’en Hall, hellish haunt of witches, warlocks and shuddering spiders. You can get in (and out again!) free with your Rover train ticket.
There are some special treats, too. There’ll be spot prizes for the bestdressed Hallowe’enster (age limit 15). And if you bring a hollowed-out Hallowe’en pumpkin to help decorate one of our stations, you could win the Poppy Line Pumpkin Star prize of a free family ticket for next year’s visit of Thomas the Tank Engine at the beginning of May.
And, of course, there’ll be a Ghost Train. On Hallowe’en itself, Wednesday 31 October, the Ghost Train will leave Sheringham at 6.30pm for a trip to Hallowe’en Hall and back. The fare is just £9.50 adult and £5 child (not suitable for under 8 year olds) and may well include a refreshing little surprise.

North Norfolk praised for cleanliness and given five star award
NNDC’s efforts to keep the district clean have earned the award in the 2012 Clean Britain Awards.
Anonymous inspections assessed 13 key criteria, including general litter, chewing gum and smoking-related litter, fly-tipping, graffiti and the provision and condition of litter bins. North Norfolk was inspected in August, at the height of the holiday season.
Areas inspected included Fakenham town centre, high school and college and Wells Road; Holt High Street and Country Park; Sheringham High Street, sea front and train station; Cromer sea front, promenade and Cromwell Road; and North Walsham High Street and Market Place.
Comments in the official Clean Britain Awards report included:
12
“Cromer promenade was amazing given the high volume of people there in high season. The litter bin provision to cope with the additional footfall was excellent.”
The area round Sheringham Station was said to be “only small but nonetheless, an extremely clean, pleasant and tidy entrance to the town”. While North Walsham was praised for its “nice tidy town centre”, and Fakenham was described as “an extremely well kept and tidy town”.
John Lee, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, Tourism, Leisure and Cultural Services, said, “Great efforts are made in North Norfolk to keep the environment clean and tidy for both visitors and people who live here. “We are very pleased to receive five stars, but
equally it is important to maintain our efforts and ensure standards remain very high.
“We can always do even better and will aim to do so in the future.”
The awards are run by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) in association with the British Cleaning Council and are open to all local authorities and other organisations involved in managing public spaces.
Steve Lee, chief executive of CIWM, said, “Our communities deserve well maintained and attractive public places and the Clean Britain Awards recognise and reward the efforts made by councils and other organisations to keep our local areas clean and welcoming.
“The quality of our local environment contributes directly to our sense of wellbeing and civic pride and plays an important role in improving the economic prosperity of our towns, cities and rural districts.”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Last time, we mentioned the little cat that was missing but had not been chipped. Unfortunately the person who was thought to have taken her said this was not the case and she appears to have disappeared without trace. As she was a pedigree cat we believe she has been stolen and her owner deeply regrets not having her chipped.
Talking to other branches of Cats Protection on a Cat Forum it is apparent that the situation regarding stray and unwanted cats is the worst we have experienced as a charity. However, compared to some areas of the country we are quite fortunate. Although we have a waiting list for cats to come in, we do not have to limit this to stray cats and can, given time, take those that are in a home at present, but for whatever reason need to find a new one. The general consensus also indicates that fewer people are coming forward to offer cats and kittens new homes. Perhaps some are under the misapprehension that we charge a lot of money, but this is not the case. Looking at the ‘dreaded’ websites we see cats and kittens being offered for far more money and without the health checks, vaccinations and routine treatments ours have all received. Others are being sensible and considering the costs they could incur owning a pet should it become ill or have an accident and maybe deciding that they

Earlier this year we launched a “Free Neutering” campaign and several vets in the area agreed to participate. Although this was intended for those who were having difficulty in paying for the operation and to prevent more litters of unwanted kittens, we know that people who could afford to pay took advantage of the offer. The offer has now closed and approximately £12,000 of branch funds have been spent on this. Skydive raises more than £7000 A skydive at Beccles Airfield raised more than £7000 for Big C, Norfolk and Waveney’s own cancer charity.
The dive, on 9 September, saw 12 people jumping out of a plane and raising thousands to go towards the charity’s work supporting people in Norfolk and Waveney who are living with cancer.
Diane Northway, Big C’s North Norfolk community fundraiser, made the leap herself. She said: “Everyone really enjoyed it and some of us wanted to do it again next spring. I’d like to thank everyone who took part and helped us raise this amazing amount of money.
“If there is anyone else who wants to take part in a challenge we have many on offer, from parachuting to cycling, marathons and treks.”
Big C is a completely independent charity and all the support, funding and services it provides are for the people of Norfolk and Waveney.
Money raised goes to help people in your community who are affected by cancer.
The charity funds ground-breaking research into beating cancer at UEA as well as paying for support and vital life-saving equipment. It runs support and information centres at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital and on Regent Street in Great Yarmouth, as well as offering a drop-in service on Mondays at the Millennium Library in Norwich.
If you would like to find out more about the charity’s work or help us by volunteering, fundraising or joining our consultation group, please call us at the Big C office on 01603 619900 or visit our website at www.big-c.co.uk.

Save lives with the extra hour When the clocks go back this October, what will you do with the extra hour? Stay in bed? Fit in an extra gym session? Spend time with family? How about saving a life?
NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) are reminding the public that it only takes an hour to give blood. With blood in constant demand, new and existing donors are being urged to donate in North Walsham to ensure that sufficient blood is available for patients.
There are many ways that donated blood can save the lives of the sick and injured. Donated blood is used not only in accident and emergency situations but also for patients undergoing surgery and receiving treatment for cancer and blood diseases, such as leukaemia.
Giving blood can dramatically improve or save the lives of those in need of blood transfusions, in fact a single donation can be broken into three component parts (red cells, plasma and platelets) which means that one donation can potentially save or improve the lives of up to three people. Derek Carr, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHSBT, said “As the weather gets colder, people are more likely to stay indoors. We would like to remind people that they only need to spend an hour of their time with us in order to help save lives. With the increase in the cold and flu this season, it is vital that those that are able to donate do so, to keep stock levels healthy”.
Anyone aged between 17 - 65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years. To book an appointment call the Donor Line on 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk

Ambulance Trust pledges to review North Walsham ambulance service
The current Chief Executive of the Ambulance Service Trust, Hayden Newton, has pledged to ensure the Trust continues to monitor the situation in North Walsham following meetings with Act on Ambulances campaigners.
On 26 September North Norfolk Labour Party campaigners, who organised the petition, made
the trip to Cambourne in Cambridgeshire to meet with the Trust to call for more support in North Walsham.
Since the meeting the Trust has agreed to continue to review performance in the town on a monthly basis, and so the Labour Party is urging residents to speak up about their experiences of the service.
Last month, as the 6500-signature petition was gathering momentum, Act on Ambulances campaigners welcomed a u-turn on some of the cuts to the service in Cromer and North Walsham, but said that the plans did not go far enough.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to continue to sign the petition at www.actonambulances.co.uk and email their stories about north North Walsham will now see 112 Norfolk's ambulance service to hours of the ambulance returned to mail@actonambulances.co.uk or the town – in addition to the 24/7 rapid write to Act On Ambulances, response vehicle – but there will still Thrums,The Hill, Happisburgh, Labour Party campaigners outside the East of England Ambulance Service NR12 0PW. be losses of 56 ambulance hours a Trust building in Cambourne armed with the 6500-signature petition. week due to government cuts.
Stay Safe
People across the county planning to celebrate Halloween at the end of October and Bonfire Night in early November are being urged to be considerate to others. Norfolk Constabulary officers will be working with residents, partner agencies and local businesses aiming to make sure that celebrations are safe and enjoyable for everyone. Additional officers will be on duty for what can be one of the busiest periods of the policing calendar. As in previous years, planning and preparation for this peak time of year is a multi-agency effort including: Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service, Norfolk County Council through Trading Standards and the Youth Offending Team, as well as other local authority resources. Inspector Mark Cant said: “We want everyone to have an enjoyable Halloween. We understand that trick or treating has become an exciting tradition for youngsters. However, Halloween can be a distressing time of year for some vulnerable members of the community and we would ask trick or treaters to respect the wishes of those who choose not to mark the occasion. “In previous years the event has passed without major incident thanks to the consideration of trick or treaters for those who didn’t want to take part in Halloween and we hope to see a repeat of that this year. “The same applies for Bonfire Night – we urge everyone to have fun, stay safe and respect residents in their neighbourhood.” Richard Herrell, Group Manager for Community Fire Protection, Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service said: “Every year we work with our partners around Halloween and Bonfire Night. We hope everyone; retailers, customers and our communities enjoy themselves and have a safe and enjoyable time." Norfolk Community Safety Partnership offers the following safety tips to young people who intend to go trick or treating: * Never go trick or treating alone or split up from your friends. * Always check with your parents or carer first. * Only go to houses where you or your friends know who lives there. * Don’t go into any house - stay on the doorstep * Don’t talk to strangers on the street. * Stay in well-lit areas and carry a torch. * Take care when crossing roads - it may be hard to see so well in a costume. * Although Halloween is about looking spooky, be careful not to frighten the elderly. * Eggs & flour make a mess & most shops won’t sell them to under 16s over Halloween. A selection of posters are available for people to display in a window or on their front door - dependent on their view of Halloween. One poster welcomes trick or treaters to the doors of residents while an alternative asks that trick or treaters do not disturb residents. There is a poster with the message that shopkeepers will not be selling eggs or flour to under 16s at the end of October and a leaflet aimed at young people which gives important tips on how they can stay safe and enjoy Halloween and Bonfire Night. The Partnership has prepared an additional poster combining safety messages and concerns about anti-social behaviour for both occasions.
North Walsham Times #409 27th October 2012
Inspector Cant added: “Our Safer Neighbourhood Teams have access to the posters and will be out and about in their communities to raise awareness with local residents and encourage their use. The posters are simple for people to access and download from our website to print out and put in windows and on doors for themselves.” The free posters are available for download at the Norfolk Police website to place on windows and doors at the end of October. http://www.norfolk.police.uk/newsevents/newsstories/2012/october/respectothersthishalloween.aspx “Amazing food and service”

North Walsham Table Tennis Tom Terrific as NWSCA Come Out On Top in Special Thriller
The match of the season so far took place in the first division as NWSCA’s Andy Beane, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and John Batchford hosted Special’s John Paul, Howard Lupton and Martin Lawes in a marathon encounter lasting over four hours. Beane had chances to defeat Paul in four sets, but the Special came through to take the opener 11-7, 13-15, 11-13, 12-10, 11-9. Baldock-Yaxley then edged out Lupton 12-10 in the fifth, before Batchford won in four against Lawes. Baldock-Yaxley then took his first win against Paul 11-9, 9-11, 11-13, 11-6, 11-7. Beane beat Lawes in four and Batchford won in five against Lupton to move NWSCA 5-1 ahead. Baldock-Yaxley then completed an impressive maximum with an 11-7, 16-14, 12-14, 4-11, 11-5 win against Lawes. Paul edged out Batchford 12-10 in the fourth and Lupton won the only straight sets game of the night against Beane. A four set doubles win for Beane and Baldock-Yaxley against Paul and Lupton that finished at 11:40pm completed a key 7-3 win for NWSCA. NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Paul Price and Simon Halliday hosted Backhander’s Teucer
NW Town F.C. MATCH REPORTS
North Walsham 1st team followed up their defeat in the Cup to a league defeat away to St Andrews. In a tight match, where Town showed much promise, they lost 1-0. They sit 3rd from bottom in the Anglian Combination Premier Division and their next match is Kirkley & Pakefield at home in the league.

Wilson, Rod Goffin and Whil De Neve with Elliott taking a maximum in three against De Neve, in four against Wilson and in five against Goffin. Price beat Goffin 14-12, 6-11, 11-2, 11-7 to take what would be the host’s only other point as Goffin took a single in straight against Halliday, De Neve won fivesetters against both Halliday and Price, Wilson also took a brace and the Backhanders won the doubles in five to complete a 6-4 victory. Meanwhile at Aylsham Methodist Church, Goblin’s John Miller, Peter Ward and Dave Johns hosted NWSCD’s Mary Sawyer, Joe Kirkup and Philip Stone. That meant a meeting between former team-mates Sawyer and Johns which was close for most of the first three sets with good backhands from Sawyer and Johns also hitting well. Sawyer had a set-point chance at 10-9 in the first set, which was won 12-10 by Johns and perhaps the early exchanges were the key as Sawyer ran out of steam at the end of John’s four set win. Stone took a brace, beating Johns in four and saving a set-point in the middle of his win in straight against Miller, but fell to Ward in four. Kirkup played brilliantly against Ward, with some
North Walsham Reserves have kept their run of form going with wins over Costessey Sports and Wymondham Reserves in the last 2 weeks. Costessey were thrashed at home 7-2 with goals from Harkness, Josh Edge, Bailey and 2 each from Ellis and Gauntlett, while Wymondham were beaten 2-1 away with goals from Davis and Harkness. The reserves lie 2nd in Anglian Combination Division 3 and play Freethorpe at home next in the league.
North Walsham ‘A’ side have had mixed fortunes in the last 2 weeks with a positive 2-1 win away at Mundesley with goals from
great shots stretching the Goblin – however some service errors at crucial times and a fall towards the end of the contest hurt Kirkup, as Ward completed his maximum in four. Sawyer took a single as she took each set 11-7 against Miller who also suffered a fall, but Ward and Johns won the doubles 13-11, 11-1, 12-10 against Kirkup and Stone to complete a 7-3 win for Goblins. In the second division, NWSCC’s Toby Usher, Tom Wardle (playing up), Chris Johnson and Phil Mole hosted Aylsham Methodist’s John Hall, Cedric Brown and Neil Powell. Hall took a maximum including a four set win against Johnson and one in straight against Usher. Both NWSCC players took a brace – Usher’s remaining games were both won in straight while Johnson was taken to four both times including a 15-13, 12-14, 11-4, 11-8 victory against Brown. Brown and Powell both picked up a single, but Mole and Usher won the doubles in four against Hall and Powell to see the match finish as a draw. Dunlop and Tipple, but followed up with a 3-1 home defeat to Worstead. Sitting 5th in the table, the A side face Mundesley in the Benevolent Cup next.
North Walsham Town Sunday recorded their first back to back wins this season with a 5-4 win over DCS Rapid, with doubles from L Payne and C Skipper and a Cini penalty; and a recent 3-2 win over Vale Longo. Goals this time coming from Tindall, Davis and Chaz Skipper scored his 9th of the campaign. The Sunday side have a tough match next when they face Marlborough in the Sunday Senior Cup.

Sainsbury’s North Walsham customers donate enough food to provide 1,000 meals to FareShare
The Million Meal Appeal has broken records, thanks to generous donations from North Walsham residents. Across Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th October, customers at Sainsbury’s North Walsham donated enough food to provide 1,000 meals to help feed vulnerable people affected by food poverty in the UK. Sainsbury’s has also once again matched every meal donated by customers, so in total 2,000 meals have been donated by the North Walsham store. The Million Meal Appeal is run with Sainsbury’s charity partner FareShare, a national charity dedicated to tackling hunger and food waste.
The first Million Meal Appeal was held in 2011 with 600 stores participating. Thanks to customers’ generosity and Sainsbury’s pledge to match meals, 1.2 million meals were donated to FareShare. Due to its success, this year’s appeal was run in over 900 stores. North Walsham were involved in both appeals and a massive two million meals have been donated in total this year, which includes matching from Sainsbury’s - that’s double the original target of 1 million meals.
Sainsbury’s Head of Community Affairs, Andy White said: “Our customers have been telling us that they like giving in this way and it’s really apparent by their generosity despite difficult times. We’re delighted to match all the meals donated by our customers and it means that together we’re helping to provide two million meals to vulnerable members of our communities that need it the most.”

Our speaker for the October meeting was author Rachel Hore who gave an interesting insight into the life of a writer.
Her first plot unfolded whilst driving her sleeping family through Norfolk at night and she needed to keep her mind occupied in silence
Rachel spoke of the self-discipline necessary and said that she was quite obsessive about sitting at her desk ready for work in the morning, as the deadlines of the publishers were very tight.
Selections of snippets from her books were read out after which she invited and answered the varied mix of questions. Joan Etherington gave the vote of thanks.
Both the darts and tenpin bowling teams are on-going any member interested in these activities would be very welcome.
The craft ladies are concentrating on a competition entry and also small cross stitch items. We next meet for our Annual Meeting and members are asked to consider volunteering themselves for the many roles available on the committee.
FareShare CEO Lindsay Boswell added: “The response to the Million Meal Appeal has been incredible. We’ll be able to combine the donated pasta, rice and tinned food with the short life surplus meat, fruit and vegetables that we receive daily from the food industry. It will make these surpluses go even further in a time of real need."
New members are always welcome so come along and join us.Our meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 7.15pm at St Benet Hall, Vicarage Street North Walsham For membership details please contact Mrs Joan Etherington on 01692 536186

National Trust joins fight to save traditional textile industry
The National Trust is doing its bit to keep one of England’s most important traditional industries alive – thanks to pioneering work being carried out at Felbrigg Hall in Norfolk.
In a UK first, Felbrigg is hosting the pilot project for a not-for-profit organisation with a mission to preserve the time-honoured knowledge, skills and technology of England’s textile industry – important aspects of our heritage that face the threat of extinction.
Specialists from the Living Looms Project will be using traditional methods and machinery to create a replica of a historically important, vibrant Georgian carpet from Felbrigg Hall’s Gothic library. The original carpet dates from the 1830s and is now extremely faded and worn. When finished, the replica will be fitted as a replacement for the original, bringing the library back to life and giving visitors a taste of the room’s original grandeur.
Samples of the material have already been taken to the Living Looms Project for detailed analysis, to discover the carpet’s original colours – once thought to be lost forever. “It is very exciting,” said Eleanor Akinlade,
the National Trust’s house manager for Felbrigg Hall. “We’ve found out the original had vibrant plum purples, deep shades of green and impressive blues – completely different to the faded colours left after nearly 200 years of use and exposure to daylight.”
Results show the carpet is particularly noteworthy as it contains 29 colours in an intricate 3 ft by 3 ft floral design, making it a rare surviving example of a Printed Tapestry carpet.
“It is very important that initiatives like the Living Looms Project are successful,” added Eleanor. “The National Trust is founded on the principle of preserving our country’s heritage and open spaces forever, for everyone. If we want to maintain the intrinsic character of ageing properties like Felbrigg Hall well into the future, then we also need to preserve the traditional skills and machines that will make
that possible.”
The Living Looms Project runs a small number of unique, late 19th century carpet looms from its workshop in Stourport-on-Severn in the West Midlands – the last looms of their kind in the world and the only looms capable of producing an acceptable replica of a Printed Tapestry carpet like the one in Felbrigg’s library.
Mo Mant, from the Living Looms Project, said: “England has already lost many of its traditional technologies, designs and skills and the textile industry has been one of the worst hit.
“Without the Living Looms Project, numerous more historic textiles, including carpets and tapestries, will disappear. That is why it is vital that we work hand-in-hand with conservation organisations like the National Trust. Once gone, these textiles will be lost forever.”
At present, most of the original library carpet is covered up with a protective layer of hard-wearing material. It will undergo conservation work before being placed in the Trust’s archives. It is expected the new carpet will be ready next year.

Atrium Highly Commended The 2012 North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Graham Allen Award has been won by a ‘weekend retreat’ which was once the favourite of Edward VII.
The retreat, now The Gunton Arms at Thorpe Market, dates from the 19th Century and was the former lodge to Gunton Hall. The building had been in decline and looked to be following the same route as so many other traditional watering holes. However, considerable intervention, restoration and re-modelling have breathed new life into this important Grade II Listed Building. The owner’s intention from the outset was to reinstate the building’s original character and architectural features.
North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Planning, Rhodri Oliver, said “This is an excellent example of a restoration scheme that respects the original structure. The scheme pays close attention to detail and new elements complement the historic structure. The building has been brought back to life and is a credit to everyone involved and to North Norfolk as a whole”.
A modern piece of contemporary design has been highly commended. The Atrium, North Walsham, perfectly marries community needs with innovative spaces and striking design. The judges said the building was a bold architectural statement which has added another dimension to community facilities
in the town.
This year two schemes received a commendation; Moor Hall Farm, Briston and Brookside and Blogg Cottage, Kelling. Moor Hall Farm saw the restoration of a derelict 18th Century farm house and outbuildings with the addition of a striking three-storey ‘tower’.
The scheme at Kelling saw the sensitive refurbishment of Brookside Cottage and the erection of the matching Blogg Cottage. This project was praised for its locally distinctive approach, vernacular design and
overall contribution to the setting and appearance of the Kelling Conservation Area.
The awards were presented at North Norfolk District Council’s offices on 8 October by Edward Allen, the eldest son of the late Graham Allen who was the first chairman of North Norfolk District Council.
For more information on the Graham Allen Awards call Phil Godwin, NNDC Conservation Design and Landscape Manager on (01263) 516131 or Paul Rhymes, Conservation and Design Officer on (01263) 516367.

Dear Grumpy Old Man
I am 100% with you. You do not stand alone in this respect. I, too, do not use a computer and have been subject to similar experiences. Fortunately I have a wife who can work the box and two children who will, if sometimes reluctantly, press all the appropriate buttons to get me what I want. The only advantage of the ‘plastic god’ is to make things quicker but at my age I can afford the time. Seems that to cram everything possible in to every minute of every day (even on holiday!) is the norm now but hey! Are things any better with computers? Nope!! Notice when the computerised system in your local shop fails to perform, no purchases can be made. The favoured excuse for inaction is ‘the computer’s down’. Ask for something and the reply might well be ‘the computer won’t let me do that!’ Whatever the machine says is right – brainpower is eroded. We are supposed to talk through the box via e-mail thus doing away with the art of conversation, letter writing and/or penmanship. I don’t advocate a return to the past but those in the present should acknowledge that until every last dinosaur has left the planet, consideration should be given to those who want to wallow in the luxury of yesteryear. Grumpies unite!!! Terry Dacktill (correct name and address supplied)

Dear Grumpy Old Man
Having read your item in The North WalshamTimes complaining about computer use and how difficult you find it – your problems probably started with those 2 hour classes. I first acquired a computer at age 60 – 13 years ago – and am self taught. I now run an online mail order business as well as a designer/maker business and B&B – all have their own websites and would not exist without an online presence. Anyone not computer literate now is cut off from so much. Skype for contacting friends and family in far flung parts of the world – this is a free mode of keeping in really good contact with children, grandchildren and friends. Shopping online for groceries if one is housebound or unable to drive in this rural area where one can be very isolated. All one needs is to use email and Google for all these contacts and information. Trouble is if you can’t - then you don’t know what you are missing. Don’t be so luddite – it’s not helpful to others and its negative. Many older people are very computer savvy and enjoy all the benefits from this. Facebook, Twitter and all the rest are optional! Jan Horrox
Dear Margaret
With Christmas fast approaching please could you again ask readers of The North Walsham Times to save their stamps for me. I send the stamps on to the many charities I support. Thank you to all your readers who have sent me their stamps so far. I will accept any stamps - albums, foreign, first day covers etc. Many thanks Jayne Manning, 111 Mill Road, Cromer, NR27 0AD
