ÂŁ50,000 MILESTONE REACHED IN MEMORY OF HELEN

Raising money for Breast Cancer Campaign (and other cancer charities) continues to be close to Charlie and his family’s hearts as the fundraising was initiated by Charlie’s sister, Helen Plummer, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004. During her two and a half year battle, Helen was an inspiration raising more than £12,000 for various breast cancer charities by organising a Charity Day and even completing a wing walk strapped to a Tiger Moth biplane!

Unfortunately Helen lost her battle with cancer and passed away on 3rd September 2006, aged 44, tragically leaving behind her husband and four children. Before his sister’s death, Charlie promised that he would continue the crucial fundraising by completing running events for as long as he was able. It was this promise that gave Charlie the motivation to complete his second London marathon. After the marathon, Charlie commented, “Helen continues to be my inspiration and I am determined (just as she was) to raise funds for cancer to help prevent other families suffering the same fate’. undraising for this year’s marathon began in March when Charlie’s family and friends held a charity evening at the local community centre, which raised an incredible £3000. This could not have been achieved without the support of local businesses that kindly donated raffle prizes and auction items, and without the enthusiasm from a tremendous amount of local people who attended the evening and joined in the fun! Charlie and his family are overwhelmed by the continued support and generosity of local people and businesses, especially in the current financial times. They are also overjoyed that the £9175 raised this year has taken the total in the Helen Plummer Cancer Charity Fund pot to over £50K but do not intend to hang up their trainers just yet! Training has already started for next year’s marathon, with even more of Charlie’s family members hoping to join him on the 26.2 mile race. The family now set their sights on the possibly that one day they may be crossing the £100k line in their mission to help beat breast cancer.

Playing sport is a relatively simple thing to do... You just need a pair of trainers, a tracksuit, and depending on what you want to do maybe a racquet and a ball. Unfortunately it’s not always that easy for someone with a disability.

Before a disabled person can even start thinking about which sport to play, where to play it or even what to wear, they need to overcome their biggest barrier and find a suitable sports wheelchair.

The Wheel Appeal is aiming to raise £6,000,000 to provide over 2,000 disabled people with a new sports wheelchair, training and coaching that will enable them to participate in sport and enjoy competitive and recreational sport.

Head Chef Nathan Boon Brings you news from The White Horse Overstrand

Christmas draws ever closer and our Party Nights are booking well, but with so many dates to choose from we do still have tables available so if you and your work mates are still thinking about a Christmas party and have not yet booked now is the time to make that call. Don’t forget we give you a free bottle of wine for every six people in your party.

Our New Year’s Eve Dinner is also booking well and I advise anyone who is thinking of seeing the New Year in with us at the White Horse to book their table soon.

But before we get to Christmas we are planning to support BBC’s Children in Need with a ‘Promises Auction’ and among the many great promises made by the staff and locals at the White Horse the Chef 's have promised to cook a meal for four and a meal for six people respectively. Our Bar Manager James is offering his services as a butler so you could have a chef from the pub cook your meal and James along to serve it to you and your guests.

Our two for one meals offer is now in full swing with a different meal available Monday to Friday Lunchtimes throughout November.

And don’t forget our Dish of the Day promotion available lunchtimes and evening Sunday to Thursdays through November giving you even more value and choice . The White Horse is a great place to meet with friends and enjoy a meal at anytime of the year but our November offers could make it even better place to enjoy great food and good company.

MP for North Norfolk takes to the shop floor

MP Norman Lamb left his day job behind and took to the shop floor in a bid to encourage more people to volunteer at the Barnardo’s shop at 25 Market Place, North Walsham earlier this month.

The North Norfolk MP rolled up his sleeves and volunteered at the store as part of national Make a Difference Day. It’s the UK’s biggest day of volunteering, and provides opportunities for thousands of people to volunteer across the country.

The theme of this year’s event is: “Everyone has a skill they can use to help others. What can you do?” and although the event’s official date was Saturday 27 October, activities still took place across the UK at the beginning of November.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said “Make a Difference Day is a great initiative to encourage people to use their skills to help others. We can all do something, big or small. It was a real pleasure to help out with the volunteers at Barnardo’s in North Walsham and if you have been thinking about volunteering I would encourage you to get in touch.”

Karen Tuthill, North Walsham Store manager, said: “It’s been fantastic to have our MP’s support in helping us to appeal for more volunteers. Norman Lamb helped us on Saturday and hopefully we will have more volunteers come forward as a result!

“We always welcome new volunteers to our friendly team in North Walsham. There are roles to suit all and you can do as much or as little as you can manage. If you have time on your hands and would like to get out and about, please do pop in for more information, or visit the Barnardo’s website at www.barnardos.org.uk/volunteering.”

North Norfolk Group Win Regional Award

At the recent Eastern Region volunteering conference held in Essex our North Norfolk Group was very surprised, firstly, with one other Group, to be award-nominated under Diabetes UK’s new Inspire Awards for volunteering, and then to become the regional winner of the Voluntary Group Award. This is wonderful recognition of all the achievements by North Norfolk Group’s committee and members.

Kate Brown and John Simmons were present to receive the award as they had travelled there to present a cheque for £6,600 raised over the past year in support of Diabetes UK’s national work and campaigns, which included £1000 to support a specific diabetes research project being undertaken by Imperial College, London.

Beyond this however regional award winners are also entered for the national award, which is to be decided and presented at Westminster in December. A much now anticipated event.

Maddermarket Invitation

A group of theatre-goers meet on a Friday, once a month, (usually on the last Friday of the month), to join a coach party in North Walsham en route for the Maddermarket. We have contingents from both North Walsham itself and the surrounding villages. We leave from the Library car-park so that parking is easy, departing at approximately 6.30 p.m., and arriving back, on average, about 10.30 pm. We book for 6 months at a time, with the booking done by one of our members at favourable rates - effectively, we get 6 productions for the price of 5. The new programme include plays such as "Playhouse Creatures", described as "frank, feisty, fruity" about Restoration actresses, including Nell Gwyn; "God of Carnage", about 2 sets of parents meeting to sort out their eleven-year-olds quarrels (with interesting results!); A Mid-summer Night's Dream (Shakespeare); "The Caretaker" (Pinter); "Calendar Girls" (Tim Firth). "Now is the Hour" is about life on a life-boat after a ship-wreck.

The cost for the 6 months varies according to the numbers on the coach. It is likely to be somewhere between £75 and £85, and covers the theatre tickets, the coach fare and the driver's tip. If you would like to know more, or would like to join this friendly group for a pleasant monthly night out, contact Judy on 01692 404636 as soon as possible. National Trust launches search for Norfolk’s good talkers

The National Trust is looking for people from Norfolk to speak up on its behalf.

The charity is expanding its team of volunteer speakers to meet growing demand and wants to hear from anyone interested in spreading the word about the Trust’s work and ideology.

Speakers visit groups, organisations and societies to give fascinating and entertaining illustrated talks on a wide range of subjects, from heritage and history to wildlife and the outdoors.

Jennie Jordan, Talk Service regional manager, said: “We’ve revamped our popular Talk

provide training.”

The National Trust was set up in 1895 with a mission to protect places of historic interest and natural beauty forever, for everyone. These days it is one of the largest landowners in the country and cares for a wide variety of historic buildings, nature reserves and stretches of coastline.

The revamped Talk Service features new speakers, new topics and new digital technology, meaning the Trust can provide everything required, including projectors and sound systems.

Talks usually last about 40 to 60 minutes and are fully illustrated. The service is free but, being a charity, the National Trust asks for a small donation – usually around £1 for each member of the audience – and for the speaker’s travel expenses to be paid.

Question & Answer Surgery

Readers might be interested to hear that on 27 November Norfolk County Council will be holding a “question & answer surgery” on day care charging at the Age UK North Norfolk Daycentre, Good Companions Hall, 35b Cremer Street, Sheringham, NR26 8DZ between 10.00am and 12noon.

It will be an ideal opportunity for anyone who has a relative or are themselves receiving day care via Social Services to address any issues they may have about their charges. They will also have an opportunity to talk to someone face to face in private about their own particular circumstances if they feel that their financial assessment is incorrect and perhaps they are paying too much.

This is something that is affecting more and more people in our area now and I think it is an ideal way to talk to the people who are directly responsible for the day to day running of day care charging.

The “surgery” is open to all and refreshments will be available for anyone who wishes to come along.

Steam Trains to Santa

The ever popular Santa Specials at Bure Valley Railway return this Christmas.

The Santa Train departs from Wroxham Station and travels to Aylsham Station where Santa and his railway sleigh are there to welcome everybody. A visit to Santa in his Grotto with a personalised present for each child provides a memorable experience. Entertainment and festive refreshments for all the family add to the Christmas magic, before climbing aboard the Santa Train for the return journey to Wroxham.

The complete Steam Trains to Santa experience takes approximately three hours, including a named present for each child 12 and under and only costs £14.00 per person (adults and children). The Santa Specials this year are running weekends from 24 November and daily from 21 December, up to and including Christmas Eve. Booking is essential.

It will also give an opportunity to those who are thinking of attending our Day Centre to come and visit us and see what services we can offer. Tabitha Evans

Council announces free pre-Christmas parking for Sunday shoppers

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has announced that to encourage shoppers to spend their cash in north Norfolk over the festive period it is introducing three hours free parking in all of its car parks in the district on the four Sundays leading up to Christmas (2, 9, 16 and 23 December).

K C

The announcement, which is in response to a suggestion from Holt Chamber of Trade and Commerce, is being introduced as a way of boosting trade on Sundays during the peak pre-Christmas shopping period.

Tom FitzPatrick, NNDC Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Business Enterprise and Economic Development said “The District Council was approached by Holt Chamber of Trade and Commerce, which is urging all local shops to follow the lead of Holt's largest business by opening for business on the four Sundays preceding Christmas Day. The Council was asked to help boost the initiative by providing free parking in the town. I am pleased that the Council will provide three hours free parking, not just in Holt, but at all Council owned car parks across the whole of North Norfolk to allow traders across the whole district to benefit from this initiative and we encourage them to grasp this chance to boost their trade. We hope that residents in North Norfolk will be encouraged to take the opportunity to shop locally rather than go further afield and look forward to welcoming visitors from other areas on those days to our many excellent shops and eating places.”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Last time I mentioned someone had shown an interest in Trinnie, our little cat with thyroid problems. I am therefore happy to report that Trinnie has now left for a loving new home, has settled in well and enjoying being back in a home environment. Her new family are happy to give her the one tablet she needs each day to keep the hyperthyroidism under control. Good news also for Adam and Eve the little cats in the photograph as they too have left for a new home together.

would also like to thank all our friends and customers over the years for their support.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

If, however, you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

In the last edition of the North Walsham Times the Miramar Veterinary Centre in Sheringham had placed a very large advertisement which covered everything people need to consider before giving a home to a new pet. The article was relevant to other animals as well as cats but did cover everything people need to think about. Several of these items will have already been provided for cats and kittens that we re-home (vet check, treatment for fleas/worms, vaccination, worming, micro chipping and neutering). However, any ongoing expenses will be the responsibility of the new owner.

For over 10 years we have had a stall at the “Craft and Things Fairs in the St Benets Hall, North Walsham. Over the last year we have found that with the present economic situation people were less likely to buy the goods we have for sale. We therefore decided that we need to look for other ways and venues to raise money for the cats and advised Sally who organised the Fairs of our decision. As a consequence she decided to discontinue the sales at North Walsham next year. We thank her for her support over the years and wish her well at her other venues. We

A sorrowful "MacTail"

Do you remember "H" our last "Tail"? Well he finally found his dream home and even has a new girlfriend in Lily, a lovely fawn greyhound.

Matilda was a stray and needs a home as the only cat.

This "Tail" is just as sad as "H's" in that a beautiful blue male greyhound living happily with his best friend Judy, a female greyhound, suddenly had his life completely turned upside down when both he and Judy lost their home and had to be re-homed separately. Mac found the change very difficult, lost weight, became an even bigger baby than he was already and his new family did not meet his needs.

Mac is now back with us and is still the very lovely boy we first homed (albeit thinner). He is housetrained, very affectionate, needs lots of TLC and will be the best friend a similarly loving person can have. Mac will be quite clingy at first, and probably later, but this is an endearing characteristic. If there is a lonely female greyhound out there then Mac would be the perfect pal, not that we are a dating agency at all!

If you think you could give Mac a loving home and would like to meet him, get more information or arrange a home check, contact Homefinding Co-ordinator David Jones (Beeston Regis) through the Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders local rate call number 0845 458 3797. Campaigners criticise North Norfolk man’s three hour wait for ambulance 21 Cornish Way, North Walsham NR28 0AW

Campaigners against the move to cut the ambulance service have criticised a heart attack patient's three-hour wait for an ambulance in Sheringham.

A 999 call was made for James Sadler, 65, on Sunday 28 October at 4.45pm when his wife suspected he was having a heart attack.

Although paramedics were quick on the scene, it was not until 7.45pm that the ambulance arrived at his home to rush him to hospital.

She added: “The East of England Ambulance Service Trust has pledged to review the cuts in north Norfolk on a monthly basis, and so we hope that patients like the family of Mr Sadler will continue to speak up about their experiences.”

The first ambulance that had been called to Mr Sadler’s home was diverted elsewhere, while a second was delayed because the driver had to fill the vehicle with petrol.

The incident is yet another worrying story about ambulance response Denise Burke handing over results of the petition to the Chief Executive of the times in north Norfolk. East of England Ambulance Service Trust Hayden Newton and chair Maria Ball.

Denise Burke from the North Norfolk Labour Party, which set up the Act on Ambulances campaign, said “These horror

stories about ambulance response times in north Norfolk only represent the bigger picture

North Norfolk loo blocks flushed with success! North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) new loo blocks in Happisburgh and Sheringham have both achieved Gold Awards in the 2012 Loo of the Year Awards. The Happisburgh toilets have also been shortlisted for a National Category Award for England and a Market Sector Award for Car Parks.

The two toilet blocks both built for NNDC by Thrower & Rutland of Felthorpe and designed by Stead Mutton & Griggs of Sheringham,

The inspection process covered 100 criteria including signage, décor and maintenance, fixtures and fittings, cleanliness and overall management and customer care. The 2012

The local Labour Party is continuing the petition against the cuts through the winter months. Residents can log on to

or write to Act on Ambulances, 40 Hempstead Road, Holt, Norfolk, NR25 6DF.

Awards were sponsored by Lepicol, The Changing Places Consortium, Clos-o-Mat, The Toilet and Washroom Cleaning Company and are supported by the four national tourism bodies in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

NNDC Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets, Rhodri Oliver, said, “We’ve spent many a penny on building these two excellent toilet blocks and I would like to congratulate everyone who made such excellent work possible.”

Wander down Church Street in Sheringham and you will see what looks like a new store, but it's not really - Sunline Curtains and Blinds Ltd has just changed its image not its owners. Mr Duffill said, "It was time to update and put a new look on the business.

With all the years of experience Mr Duffill and his work force have, you are sure to get a good quality product at an affordable price and the aftersale care they provide is first class, which is hard to come by with the big companies these days.

Songbird Survival Songbird Survival is a UK wide charity for songbirds made up of members who are lovers of the countryside, gardeners and farmers, ornithologists, conservationists and town and country people throughout Great Britain who are deeply concerned about the effects of increasing predation on songbird populations. Local member Eddie Bullimore takes up the story...

“Songbird Survival first caught my attention in the local press. Living and working on the land all my life the work they are doing is of great interest to me. Songbird Survival are doing research to find out why we are losing so many birds. As a country man, one of the reasons is the amount of predators in the countryside. There are other things as well – modern

farming, pollution, loss of habitat, roadside verge cutting where nests have been cut through and hedges being cut when the birds need the berries for their winter survival. As far as the owl population is concerned there used to be buildings, stables, barns and cattle sheds which have now been turned into living accommodation.

The farm I look after for conservation has another problem in that there are footpaths which do not get used properly by dog walkers. Dogs are supposed to be kept on leads but not all walkers keep to this rule and I have seen nests of ground birds destroyed. Please do keep your dogs on leads and help to protect our birds. As active members of Songbird Survival we are doing everything we can to help raise money for research. We are very grateful to The North Walsham Times for running our advert in their Free Ads section for saleable items – this has generated items from the general public for us to sell on our table top sales and at our yard sales – thank you to everybody who has donated items to us. So far we have raised over £2000. We are also grateful to Steve at The Lighthouse Inn in Walcott for the support he gives us.

Successful Student Sale at St. Nicholas House School

On Thursday 8 November the pupils from Form 5 at St. Nicholas House School organised their own bring and buy sale to raise money for the World Wildlife Fund and the RSPCA. The children did a fantastic job of setting up and running the stalls, donating toys, baking cakes and even clearing up afterwards!

Head Boy Raphael writes “We had seven stalls running which were the bric-a-brac, hoop-la, toy stall, book stall, DVD stall, cake stall and hoop-in-a-bucket. Hoop-in-a-bucket and hoop-la were games where you could win prizes and the rest were stalls that sold things for about 20p. I was on the hoop-in-a-bucket with Tom but we sometimes helped on other stalls. Altogether we raised £119.20 which went towards two really good causes and was really good fun too!” North 16 Walsham Times #411 24th November 2012

We would also like to thank our volunteers who give up their time to help us.

On a personal note I make and put up owl boxes and small bird boxes and I have had broods of owls in some of my boxes – tawny owls, barn owls and little owls”

If any readers would like to find out more about Songbird Survival please visit their website www.songbird-survival.org.uk and if you have any saleable items you would like to donate please see their ad on our Free Ads page (Tel 01692 400780).

London to Paris Cycle Ride for Great Ormond Street Hospital

On 5 June 2013 I am participating in the London to Paris Bike ride to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

My son Thomas was born with a heart defect, fallots tetralogy. He has had several heart operations at G.O.S.H and will need further surgery in the future. Because of the fantastic treatment he has received from this great hospital he is now an able player in North Walsham U13s football team and is an active member of the Table Tennis club.

Over the last 13 years that I have been visiting G.O.S.H., I have been overwhelmed at the dedication, professionalism and friendliness of all the staff at this wonderful hospital, the bravery of the children who attend the hospital, and the warmth felt as you walk through the doors. For this reason I would like to raise as much money as possible to enable them to continue their work and to try to help give other children the same chance as Thomas.

5 “COME AND SEE US FOR YOUR FREE CHECK”

WISHING OUR CUSTOMERS A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR

I have participated in smaller fundraising events over the years including quite a few Boxing Day dips but have decided to take on this bigger challenge and raise hopefully a larger amount of money. G.O.S.H. rely heavily on charity donations to purchase much needed equipment, new wards and play areas and also enable parents to be able to stay with their child during their stay at the hospital, this is very important for both the child and the parent.

On Saturday 23 February 2013, 9am until 2pm, I will be holding a POSH Jumble Sale and Cake Sale at the Atrium in North Walsham. If you have anything at home, clothes, toys, games etc that you no longer want but are still in good condition and would like to donate it for the jumble sale please contact me at L2p4gosh@hotmail.co.uk or phone or text me on 07979216289 and I can come and collect (anything not sold on the day will be donated to local charity shops).

ANTA AYS AXON’S ERVICING IS ENSATIONAL VALUE

A fundraising evening will also be arranged for around March 2013, this will consist of an auction and raffle, date to be arranged but it will be well advertised. If anybody would like to donate a service for the auction or a raffle prize anything will be gratefully received.

I will be cycling approx. 310 miles over a 4 day period and have a list of these miles giving people the opportunity to ‘Buy a mile’ for a small donation I will have the list of miles with me at events.

If you would like to make a donation online you can visit my justgiving page at www.justgiving.com/karensgotwheels

NHS Mandate has improving patient experience at its heart

The NHS Mandate published this month puts the patient’s experience at its heart, says North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb.

The document sets out the priorities for the health service over the next two years. It is agreed between the Government and the NHS Commissioning Board and has been drawn up following extensive consultation over the summer. It shows how the Government and Commissioning Board will be held accountable on a series of progress measures.

Key goals include:

• Improving standards of care, especially for the elderly

• Better diagnosis, treatment and care for people with dementia

HIT AND RUN

• Better care for women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period • Making it easier for patients to give feedback

• Making it easier to access GP services – booking appointments and ordering repeat prescriptions, and accessing your own health records – online • Preventing premature deaths from the biggest killers

• Putting mental health on an equal footing with physical health

Commenting, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “The Mandate reaffirms the Government’s commitment to the founding

I have ridden motorbikes all my life and was very proud when my grandson passed his CBT test and began riding his moped. Throughout last year he had worked hard gardening, babysitting, in fact turning his hand to any little job to earn money towards the moped. On Wednesday 31 October between 10-10.30am he was riding his moped in North Walsham along Manor Road, towards Hall lane when he reached the crossroads of Marshgate and Pound Road. Suddenly a car drove straight out of Marshgate hit him and knocked him off his moped. My grandson

principle of the NHS – a comprehensive and universal service, with care available to everyone according to clinical need rather than the ability to pay. It also sets out our priorities for the coming years. The patient’s experience is at the heart of the document – whether it’s giving people more control over their own care, making it easier for them to access GP services and information about their local NHS online, or to report concerns. I am particularly pleased to see the focus that is placed on mental health. This is something I fought hard for. Never before has any government prioritised mental health in this way. This issue affects so many of us and yet has never been treated as seriously as physical health. That has got to change.”

quickly got up off the ground and picked up his moped. The car driver got out of his vehicle and said “Sorry, are you alright?” My grandson, who was in shock replied “Yes I think so”, the car driver then got in his car and drove off in the direction of Pound Road. My grandson had injuries to his leg, shoulder blades and wrists. His moped was badly damaged. The police are treating the incident as a hit and run. The vehicles involved are a silver VW car and a black Aerox moped.

North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind

‘With November now upon us another year has almost gone and it will soon be time to celebrate with our Christmas Lunch at The Community Centre’.

But before the festive season begins for club members, North Walsham Social Centre for the Blind had one last meeting in November when 46 members met at the Community Centre and were entertained by Tony Bryant, something of a one man band as well as having a great voice. He sang a selection of songs some country, some oldies and a taste of the old skiffle such as Rock Island Line and My Old Man’s a Dustman. The songs he sang held a lot of

memories for members who thoroughly enjoyed his entertainment.

The afternoon began with the club’s annual bake off when members bake cakes to raise money for the club. There was a mixture of sausage rolls, cakes, sponges, fairy buns, and even some old fashioned bread pudding. Every cake was sold and a total of £70.50 was raised for club funds. The raffle also cashed in at £44 - a special thank you to all the members that supported the club with their donations.

Members would also like to wish Diane Berthelot a very happy 80th birthday. ‘Diane is one of our members and was unable to attend

this month’s meeting because of illness - we all wish her a speedy recovery. Diane is also a well known poet and has written many poems for The North Walsham Times as well as her own little booklets. We would like to thank Diane's husband for baking a wonderful birthday cake for us to all enjoy. Get well soon Diane we miss you’.

As this is almost the end of the year the club would also like to mention their guide dog Misty who has passed all her tests and has now settled with her new companion. They are now sponsoring a new dog with the hope of another success.

Acoustic Night at Paston College

Paston Sixth Form College’s first music event of the academic year was held on Wednesday 24 October.

throughout the night from Paston Sixth Form College students. There were many highlights and too many to tell all of them but we witnessed Matt Snowden’s amazing cover of Gangnam Style, Obeid Juma Gharib’s A cappella twist of Price Tag, Emily Gray’s soulful Hey Ya and a couple of Jack Van Greuning’s feet stomping classics. A great night was had by all who attended and the student performers highlighted the breadth and depth of musical talent at the college.

It was an eclectic mix of students performing pop, rock, classical and alternative music under the guise of an acoustic night. The event was held at The Hub, on the College’s Lawns Site, which served as an ideal place for an intimate and low key atmosphere and was a great place to host the event.

In total 12 acts performed to an audience made up of staff and students. With a combination of solo and group performances, the audience were treated to some outstanding music

NORTH WALSHAM & BRADFIELD FLOWER CLUB

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas .... and we have just had the most fantastic Christmas Demonstration on 12 November, when Avril Hill from Kent visited us at the Community Centre. Over 100 guests and visitors enjoyed Avril's spectacular sparkly designs and sparking wit - followed by a superb afternoon tea - home-made by Irene and her team.

We are so lucky in the flower club to have so many talented volunteers who really enjoy what they do and it is part of what makes our club such an enjoyable one to belong to.

Our next get-together is a "Christmas Party" afternoon at the Catholic Church Hall on Thursday 6 December at 2.30pm. If you are a member, or have visited us before, then do come along an enjoy an festive afternoon tea and games.

Christmas Stall

Our Christmas Stall this year will be back in the Church Approach on Thursday December 13 from 7.30am. We will be selling festive arrangements along with our fresh 'winter' wreaths which will last for a couple of months outside. We hope the weather will be bright and sunny so that lots of you will visit our stall & help us raise money for East Anglian Air Ambulance which is our charity this year.

You can also visit us in St Benet's Hall on Wednesday 12 December from 1pm - 5pm - when we will be making all the wreaths and arrangements fresh to order. Alternatively, you can call me to place an order. G Dillon 01692 404628

Plea for more family time from 1 in 5 kids

One in five 8-11 year olds want to spend more time with their parents and more than a third of parents said they want to spend more free time with their kids, new research for the National Trust has found. While watching television and DVDs tops the family time in front of screens, watching TV or YouGov poll as the most common way for playing video games. Spending time with the parents and children to spend time together in children outdoors can be just as cheap as well the UK 26% of children aged 8-11 years old as fun and educational and offers a bit of and nearly half (49%) of all parents surveyed balance in a world dominated by X-Factor said they would like to spend more time and Fifa 12." together just going for a walk. Dr William Bird, a GP and an expert in

To help families get out on an Autumn walk, users of the website Mumsnet have provided some top tips on making sure that parents have got everything ready for a fun day out such as climbing a huge hill, flying a kite or hunting for some treasure on a beach.

Simon Pryor, Natural Environment Director at the National Trust, said: “Despite the fact that TV seems to be dominating family life its really encouraging that children and parents want to spend more time together and that walking is seen as a great way of doing just that. Walking is a brilliant way for families to spend time together, get fit and discover the joy of the British countryside. And with so many great activities taking place at National Trust properties around the country there’s no better time to get out and go on a walking adventure.”

Mumsnet co-founder and CEO Justine Roberts added: "It's all too easy to end up spending all

environment and health, said: "Children can benefit hugely from walking in the outdoors. High blood pressure, cholesterol and depression can be detected in children as young as 10, due to inactivity. Spending time with family, in the outdoors, can invigorate even the most TV or X-box-obsessed children!"

Families can also download free family friendly trails from www.nationaltrust.org. uk/greatbritishwalk and they can also share their favourite walks online for the chance to win a stay in a National Trust holiday cottage.

Other findings from the research include: Eighty one per cent of children aged 8 to 11 surveyed said they watched TV and DVDs with their parents in their free time, 69% go on activity trips and days out, while 66% go to the park together, 61 per cent said they went go to the cinema together, 50% playing sport and 52% on walks.

When asked the same question, parents of children 18 and under who spend their free time together, answered slightly differently but TV still came out top, with 72%. According to parents, the second most common joint activity was going to the park (47%), followed by going on activity/day trips (46%) and going walking ranked fourth with 37%.

When asked which activities they’d like to do more with their children, 18 and under parents said day trips were the only activity that was more popular than walking, with 56% of parents saying they would like to go on more joint outings with their kids, compared to 49% that said they’d like to spend more time on walks with their children.

The 8 to 11 year olds surveyed said they’d like to spend more time with their parents doing outdoor activities such as going to the park (47%) and playing sport (46%).

Over half of the parents surveyed (54%) said they spend more time with their children than their own parents did. And one in three (35%) of parents said that they would like to spend more leisure time with their children.

Not surprisingly, the figures for teenagers (12-15 year olds) wanting to spend more time with their parents (13%) drop off though only 2% of 12-15 year olds want to spend less time with their parents.

North Walsham Table Tennis Goblins Back from the Brink

In the first division, Goblin’s John Miller, Peter Ward and Dave Johns hosted NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Simon Halliday and Paul Price. NWSCB built up a 4-1 lead with Elliott edging out Ward 13-11 in the fourth. Johns then defeated Halliday in four, before Ward came back from two sets down to deny Price in five.

Elliott assured NWSCB of at least a draw with a 15-13 in the third win against Johns. The final singles proved crucial as Miller and Halliday split the first four sets and both had match-points in the decisive fifth – but it was Miller who took the set 14-12 to keep Goblins in the match. And Ward and Johns won the doubles 12-10 in the fourth against Halliday and Price to secure the draw.

At North Walsham Sports Centre NWSCD’s Mary Sawyer, Joe Kirkup and Philip Stone

hosted Special’s Ray Howe, Martin Lawes and Jonathan Care with Lawes saving set points in a couple of sets against Stone but relatively untroubled as he took a maximum without dropping a set. Kirkup was involved in a couple of epics and had match-point against Howe at 10-9 in the fifth, but the Special came through 9-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-6, 13-11 and Care also beat Kirkup 11-4, 5-11, 14-12, 6-11, 11-7. Stone came back from 2-8 and saved a couple of set-points in the third as he beat Howe 12-10, 11-8, 13-11. Lawes and Care won the doubles 11-5, 11-5, 12-14, 11-9 against Kirkup and Stone to conclude a 9-1 match win for Specials. NWSCD also played Sharks away at Trunch and with the match locked at 4-4, Sawyer had five chances to take Chris Marshall the distance, but the Shark won seven points from 5-10 to close out a vital win 12-10

in the fourth. Kirkup and Stone did not really get going until it was too late in the doubles, solid play from Marshall and Steve Hudson winning 13-11 in the third to seal a 6-4 win for the Sharks.

Meanwhile in the second division, there was a close 6-4 loss for NWSCC at Gresham School, while NWSCE went down 10-0 to Barracudas but beat Aylsham Methodists 9-1. 27

Tough new sanctions to tackle metal theft

The Government is tightening up the scrap metal industry in an effort to tackle thefts that have affected a number of churches in Norfolk. From next month powers will take effect to stop cash paid for metal and give the police stronger powers to target rogue traders. 2011 was the worst year on record for metal theft from religious buildings across the country.

Earlier this year, two men were arrested following the theft of a church bell from St Peters Church in Norwich. Elsewhere in the county, four sheets of lead were taken from the roof of All Saints Church in Downham Market. 28

According to the Home Office, there are roughly 1000 metal thefts a week.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said “This is a serious problem for rural churches and I am glad the Government is giving the police more powers to get to grips with it. And it is not just churches that are affected – it causes problems and delays on the railways too. Metal has even been stolen from war memorials. With Remembrance Sunday coming up we are all conscious of the sacrifices made by members of our armed forces. Theft is always wrong, but there is something particularly obscene and upsetting about war memorials being

vandalised by metal thieves wanting to make a quick profit.”

Commenting further, Liberal Democrat Crime Prevention Minister, Jeremy Browne said: “The Coalition Government is determined to stamp out this illegal trade, which in recent years has cast a shadow over Remembrance Sunday for bereaved families. That is why we are reforming the scrap metal industry to support legitimate dealers and tighten the net around those who flout the rules.”

Dear Margaret

I just wanted to say that recently you advertised Futters of Great Yarmouth who sell carpets and furniture. I took your advert and purchased some new carpets and was met by a very pleasant manager called Stuart. From purchase to fitting I can only say how helpful and friendly they all were and would recommend to others. Yours sincerely Jo, North Walsham

Dear Margaret

I am writing to say what a lovely afternoon my husband and I had at The Atrium recently when we had tea and cakes and watched the film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. We were served by the High School students who were all very polite, cheerful and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, meeting other people our age. We’ve not been to the pictures for about 25 years and we’ll be going again in the near future. We would like other people in North Walsham to enjoy themselves as we did and support the Atrium cinema and theatre. Well done to the hardworking Atrium team and the volunteer help. Yours sincerely Mr & Mrs Barrow

Norfolk Recruit Sets Sail on a New Career

A 20-year-old recruit from Holt is on course for a life on the ocean wave after completing the first phase of his Royal Navy training at HMS Raleigh, in Cornwall.

Trainee Air Engineering Technician Jack Burt arrived at the gates of the Royal Navy training establishment in September. During a 10 week intensive course Jack and his fellow recruits have been taught the basic skills they will rely upon throughout their Service careers. The training culminates in the passing-out-parade attended by families and friends.

The former pupil of Sheringham High School worked in a bar before embarking on his Naval career. Jack said: “I joined the Royal Navy for a respected career with good opportunities.

Initial naval training is very hard. It felt terrible doing it, but to complete the course feels great. The highlight for me was the military exercise on Dartmoor and the physical training, such as the obstacle and assault courses.”

With the first phase of his training complete Jack will transfer to HMS Sultan, in Hampshire. There he will learn how to carry out scheduled maintenance as well as preand post-flight servicing and inspections for the Fleet Air Arm's helicopters.

The Royal Navy's Initial Naval Training course is underpinned by nine Core Maritime Skills that are the foundations of naval life and underpin operational effectiveness. Recruits are taught the basics of Naval discipline and customs. They learn about navigation and are given the chance to take the helm of their own medium sized inflatable boat during a

POST OFFICE DVLA DEAL GOOD NEWS

Former Postal Affairs Minister and North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has described the deal that will see the Post Office continue to deliver tax disc and driving licence services as ‘good news for Norfolk Post Offices and motorists’. Motorists will be able to tax their cars and apply for or renew driving licences at the Post Office for at least seven more years in a deal with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) announced yesterday by the Coalition Government. “Post Offices are a vital part of our communities here in Norfolk and this news, along with the Coalition’s commitment to invest £1bn in the Post Office network, helps to put them on a more sustainable footing for the future. “This news also furthers the Coalition’s aim to see Post Offices as a front office for Government and I am pleased that this contract means that the Post Offices will be able to bid for other services in the future. “I am keen to work with local councils and the Post Office on this issue to see whether it could benefit Norfolk.” Commenting further, incumbent Liberal Democrat Post Office Minister, Jo Swinson said, “This win follows the recent addition of other new services, including the announcement that HSBC plans to offer access to their current accounts at the post office from next spring. “It’s vital that the Post Office continues to build on this success to develop and secure more new services for citizens up and down the UK.”
