£600 tax cut for working families Fuel Duty raise scrapped

Changes to the personal tax allowance announced in today’s Autumn Statement will mean that by April, income tax bills will have been cut by £600 a year.

People working full time on the minimum wage will have seen their income tax bill cut in half. Raising the personal allowance was a flagship Liberal Democrat manifesto commitment.

planned fuel duty rise and increasing the basic state pension by 2.5% in line with the commitment to the triple lock, a Lib Dem manifesto commitment. At the same time, the Coalition Government is clamping down on tax evasion and introducing the first ever General Anti-Abuse Rule – something Labour never did in their thirteen years in power. It is clear that we still have a long way to go to fix our damaged economy, but we are on the right track.”

In Norfolk, 34,040 people have been lifted out of tax altogether since 2010. 312,300 people in the county will get a tax cut from April next year.

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb welcomed the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement which also included measures to tackle tax avoidance and evasion, extra spending for transport, skills and schools, and cancelling January’s planned increase in fuel duty.

Commenting, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said: “My priority, and the priority of the Liberal Democrats, is to ensure that the wealthiest pay their fair share and to help the ordinary families who need it most. The measures announced today reflect that commitment: cutting income tax for those on low and middle incomes, cancelling the

The Chancellor also announced reforms to the last government’s controversial Private Finance Initiative, which locked some schools, hospitals and Government buildings into poor value contracts, at great expense to the taxpayer.

The Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital was one of the first NHS hospitals to be built under the PFI scheme. The contract was renegotiated just three years after it was first signed and costs local taxpayers £37.7m for each of the 35 years of the contract.

The new Private Finance 2 (PF2) model will help secure better value by allowing the taxpayer to take a share in projects. The new system will also be more transparent, requiring projects to publish financial performance figures every year. Existing PFI deals have been renegotiated and £2.5bn of savings made.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said:

“The announcement on PFI is really significant. The last Labour government were utterly careless with taxpayers’ money, spending vast sums on these poor value contracts.

“PF2 will ensure that the taxpayer shares in the profits from these projects. In the past, the proceeds simply lined the pockets of private contractors.”

A busy Christmas at Little Nick’s Nursery

The Reception class and Little Nick’s Nursery took part in ‘The Christmas Star’ along with all the younger children of St. Nicholas House Prep School in North Walsham. The children in Reception played the parts of Mary and Joseph, the three kings and the shepherds and also provided percussion accompaniment to the songs. The Nursery children played the parts of the animals that you might have found in the Nativity scene in Bethlehem at the time of Jesus’ birth. It has been a busy week for the children as they enjoyed their school cooked Christmas lunch on Thursday and had great fun at their Christmas parties on Friday afternoon. They also made Reverend Earis, vicar of St. Nicholas Church, very welcome when he came to tell us about the history of St. Nicholas. We always welcome visitors, just give us a call first so that we can expect you: telephone 01692 403143 or email office@stnicholashouse.com

Failure to address ambulance targets should trigger u-turn on cuts argues Labour Cuts to the ambulance fleet in north Norfolk should be overturned after the ambulance service failed to reach vital targets for another month, North Norfolk Labour Party has argued.

The local Labour party, which created the Act on Ambulances petition with over 8000 signatures, was assured by the East of England Ambulance that if demand continued to increase and response times were not addressed in the rota shakeup they would request more funding to ensure all cuts are overturned in north Norfolk.

However, it was revealed in November that the ambulance service in north Norfolk had failed to reach the A8 target to reach at least 75pc of most serious calls within 8 minutes, and fewer than a quarter of Norfolk stroke victims had reached hospital within the 60 minute guidelines.

Party. “They highlight the pressure the ambulance service is under with the £50m of government cuts they have to make. The data also shows that even before these cuts were made the ambulance service did not have enough resource to cope with an aging population and increasing demand in north Norfolk.”

The local Labour Party has also been campaigning for MP and Health Minister Norman Lamb to drop his support for cutting ambulance funding. They recently handed in a petition signed by hundreds of constituents urging him to rethink.

North Norfolk Labour Party delivering petition signatures to MP Norman Lamb's office urging him to rethinks support for ambulance cuts.

“These figures confirm what we have been

Mundesley Village Cinema presented by Coronation Hall Film Club Thursday 27 December 2.30pm Christmas Special - The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists U 87mins. The First Day’s Trading at Waitrose

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb visited the new Waitrose store in North Walsham last month to hear from staff about their first day of trading.

Commenting, Mr Lamb said “There were an amazing number of people in the store and everyone is so pleased it has opened. The staff were very positive. This could be a real boost for the town. Local traders, on the whole, are supportive and I am glad that Waitrose is working closely with the town’s Chamber of Trade. I hope that this will lift the whole town, particularly now in the run-up to Christmas.”

Christmas Seaside Special review 21 Cornish Way, North Walsham NR28 0AW

The Christmas Show opened at The Pavilion Theatre Cromer on the 1st December with a spectacular performance of variety entertainment.

Di Cooke, who devised, directed and choreographed, has created a highly professional and massively entertaining show along with Nigel Hogg, Musical Director and arranger.

Olly Day linked the whole show brilliantly in a lighthearted and entertaining way, assisted in no "little" way by Jo Little, comedienne, whose personality and talent shone through.

The two lead singers, Lulu Alexander and Cromers own Eddie Bushell gave us tremendous performances with great solo efforts, but also featured in the whole company scenes. Lulu also gave us a brief glimpse of her talent as a championship skater. Helen Gulston and James Morgan who are part of the superb

Seaside Special Dancers joined Lulu and Eddie to great effect as the Christmas Quartet.

The Seaside Special dancers gave their usual talented, enthusiastic and high octane performance supported by the delightful and extremely talented children of Marlene's School of Dancing. Marlene also provided the brilliant members of the Youth Choir who linked well with the professional cast members. We can certainly be proud of our local performers.

This is a fantastic show which runs until 30th December so book early to get into the Christmas Spirit.

The scenery was designed by Ian Westbrook at 3D Creations, costumes by Laura Whyte and sound and lighting by Amanda Hill added greatly to the enjoyment of the show. A very talented bunch.

Motoring Future Comes to North Norfolk

The future of motoring has arrived in North Norfolk after local car retailer Crayford and Abbs Ltd was appointed to join Nissan’s expanding elite band network of specialist EV (Electric Vehicle) outlets last month.

The exciting appointment means the Bodham dealership is now able to sell and service the groundbreaking Nissan LEAF – the world’s bestselling 100% electric car.

It follows a period of intensive manufacturer-led training for dealership staff and the appointment of James Abbs as a dedicated Electric Vehicle Relationship Manager on hand to assist customers with all driving and ownership queries.

And Kevin Abbs is predicting no shortage of interest in the stunning LEAF – the 2011 World and European Car of the Year – from potential customers eager to experience its winning combination of zero-emissions, ultra low

A spacious and generously equipped family hatchback, the LEAF is capable of travelling up to 109 miles on a single charge which could cost as little as £2.03 on an overnight electricity tariff. In addition, its zero-emission battery-powered motor means it’s completely exempt from road tax and the London Congestion Charge. Meanwhile, Crayford and Abbs Ltd will also become a popular destination for existing LEAF drivers as it has been fitted with a hightech charging point – part of an ever expanding nationwide network.

Kevin Abbs said: “This is absolutely fantastic news for our business and for the region’s motorists. By becoming a Nissan specialist EV dealer we have effectively made 100% electric motoring an affordable and practical reality for

He added: “The Nissan LEAF is an incredible vehicle which drives and handles just like a conventionally-powered car. But the benefits are amazing. The running costs are super low while trips to the filling station and forking out for things like road tax and congestion charges instantly become a thing of the past.

“Plus, of course, LEAF drivers have the added benefit of knowing they are not adding to their carbon footprint and are helping the environment.”

The Nissan LEAF is available now priced from £25,900 (including a £5,000 government grant).

For more information about the Nissan LEAF, or to book a test drive, visit Crayford and Abbs’s Bodham showroom or call James or Kevin now on 01263588160

Head Chef Nathan Boon

Brings you news from The White Horse Overstrand

Christmas is nearly here and I am delighted to report that we are almost fully booked for Christmas Day Lunch.

Our party nights are doing well and we are pleased with the comments that we have received from our guests.

New Years Eve is going to be a busy night our New Years Eve Six Course Dinner is proving very popular so my advice is to book as soon as possible.

But before then we have our annual Christmas Sing-along on Sunday 16th December at 7pm, followed by our Christmas Quiz. It’s a great evening with pub regulars and villagers coming together to sing a host of Christmas songs led by Claire and Will Reynolds. Enjoy a glass of White Horse Mulled Wine and a Mince Pie, or try your luck with our tombola all in aid of our Charity of the Year EACH.

On Saturday 22nd December, Norwich band Knight Moves makes a welcome return for an evening of music in the bar.

On New Year’s Eve the superb Audio Junkies will be seeing in the New Year, playing live in the bar from 9pm until late, so if you want to see 2013 in style then the White Horse is the place to be!

Looking ahead, we will be thinking about our Valentine’s night and no doubt having a few food offers to tempt our customers during January and February, so keep reading the North Walsham Times to find out more.

Finally, may I, on behalf of all the staff and management at the White Horse, wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Nathan’s recipe for Cranberry Sauce

Ingredients 400g Fresh Cranberries - 240g Caster Sugar - 3 tbsp Cherry Brandy 75ml Water - 3 Bay Leaves - Lemon Juice (optional) Method Place all the ingredients in a nonstick pan and simmer on a low heat until the sauce thickens. Continue cooking until the Cranberries start to burst. If you find the sauce too sweet add a squeeze of lemon juice. Allow to cool and serve as required. Will keep for one month in a fridge.

Putting their best foot forward for GSDR

Pupils from North Walsham’s Footnotes School of Dance donned their dancing shoes last week to raise much needed funds for German Shepherd Dog Rescue. ‘Paws for Pounds’ was a fun packed week of activities which raised an amazing £228 and a huge box of treats for the dogs that don’t have a home of their own this Christmas. Pupils learnt about the local dogs being cared for by the rescue and what being a volunteer means. School proprietor Michelle Marett is a volunteer for GSDR and when not teaching dance will often be found walking the dogs currently in kennels that are looking for their forever homes.

Michelle said “I’m overwhelmed with the total raised; everyone had a wonderful time taking part and are already asking if we can do the same next year”.

Much to the delight of pupils, Michelle’s own dogs Alfie & Bozo popped in to say hello and to thank them for their fundraising efforts. GSDR is a charity dedicated to the rescue and re-homing of German Shepherd Dogs across the UK.

Christmas Challenge Day

Millfield Primary School in North Walsham started the festive season off with a Christmas House Challenge.

The children divided into four house teams of mixed ages to raise funds for equipment for their playground. The day was filled with festive cheer and excitement as they enjoyed taking part in all of the different challenges. Some of the activities included making reindeer cards, cakes, biscuits, Christmas

tree pockets to hang, Christmas paper weights and clay candle holders.

Mrs Cutting, a parent helper, created a magnificent Gingerbread House that could easily have been displayed in Harrods shop window! This was auctioned off to raise money for the equipment as well. All of the finished ‘treasures’ were sold at the Christmas Fair, which was held in the school hall on Friday 7 December. Also, part of their house challenge was to create a Christmas game that the children and parents could play at the Fair. The children worked collaboratively on

this and all houses came up with unique games, which attracted a great deal of attention. All of the children worked extremely hard with all their challenges and worked exceptionally well as a team; with the older children helping the younger ones. Dylan Reid-Webb, a year 2 pupil, explained why he loved the day. “I really loved making the clay candles because it was really messy, I also liked cooking the Gingerbread Men and making Gingerbread Men bunting. It made me feel really happy.”

Police cold caller warning Police are reminding residents to be vigilant to cold callers in the run-up to Christmas. The warning comes as ACPOs (Association of Chief Police Officers) National Burglary Awareness campaign focuses on distraction burglary – crimes where people trick or distract residents in order to gain entry to their property.

The most common form is for people to pretend to be from a water company, gas or electric provider and trick the homeowner into thinking they need urgent access to his phone. Other methods include pretending to be doing repairs or maintenance or impersonating figures of authority to enter homes.

Detective Sergeant Pete Jessop, from Norfolk Constabulary’s Operation RADAR team, which specialises in doorstep crime, said while offences had fallen significantly in recent years it still pays to be vigilant.

“I would urge people to remain vigilant when they receive a knock on their door. Cold callers are men or women or make up stories to gain access to a person’s home to steal and will often prey on the vulnerable such as the elderly.

“If you do decide to open the door to someone, ensure that you ask for identification and certainly think twice before inviting anyone into your house. A genuine caller should not mind you checking.” 14

Police would also give the following advice:

• Close and lock the back door before answering the front door

• Use a spy hole or window to look at the caller before answering the door.

• Elderly householders should be on their guard and members of the public who have an elderly or vulnerable neighbour or relative should be vigilant.

• Always ask for identification from any unexpected callers and do not let anyone in if you are not

comfortable with who they are.

• Phone the company or organisation the caller claims to be from while the caller waits outside.

• Tell someone you trust about uninvited callers to your home. • If necessary, report it to police

with a description of the people involved and details of their vehicles if possible.

Further crime prevention advice is available at www.norfolk.police.uk.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Firstly, I am happy to advise you all that Nimrod, the lovely little lad featured last time will be spending Christmas in a new home with Peanut, a lovely little tabby boy who recently joined us.

Fortunately we do not often get cats dumped on our doorsteps but in each instance the kittens concerned have been very lucky to have been found in time. The latest arrivals were left on Sharon’s doorstep in a cardboard box. As one of her sons had been bringing goods to be stored while work is in progress at his home her initial reaction was that this was just another box of goods to go in the garage. Fortunately she saw the holes in the top before storing it and discovered the two kittens inside. A call to Stephanie followed and it was decided to keep them in the bathroom overnight to give Stephanie time to call the person whose cat was due in the empty pen the next day, to explain the situation to them. As the cat had been waiting to come in for some time due to the owner’s health problems, they were naturally upset and needed reassurance that their cat would come in as soon as a pen was free. As I was cleaning at Stephanie’s the next day I picked the kittens up and took them down to Dilham. Fleas had already been detected on the kittens and it was apparent when you picked them up that worming was definitely overdue too. They have since been treated for fleas and worms, given a clean bill of health at the vets, had their first vaccination, been micro chipped, and now, happily, Peanut the little lad has left for his new home with Nimrod.

It is dangerous to just leave animals on doorsteps in this way as you cannot be sure how quickly they will be found and what the weather conditions will be. We urge people to discuss their problems first as we will always try to help if we can.

As this is the last edition of The North Walsham Times before Christmas we would like to thank everyone who has supported us during the year and wish them a Happy Christmas and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). 16

Take Care At Christmas

We all love a little over indulgence at Christmas; chocolate, rich food, cakes, mmmmmm.., but remember our four legged friends are not the same as us!

We receive a lot of queries about dogs who have eaten “something they shouldn’t” during the weeks approaching Christmas, especially chocolate.

How severe the problem can be depends on two factors; how much chocolate has been consumed and the type of chocolate that has been eaten. The level of toxic theobromine differs considerably in different types of chocolate.

White chocolate does not contain enough theobromine to require treatment if consumed.

If milk chocolate is eaten then treatment would be required for anything over approx 9g/kg dog weight. With dark chocolate the risk increases

and treatment would be required for anything over 1g/kg dog weight.

Cocoa powder poses a higher risk and treatment for consumption over 0.77g/kg dog weight would be necessary.

The effects of chocolate poisoning to look out for are; vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration. The theobromine in chocolate can affect blood pressure and heart rate and in extreme cases tremors, convulsions and muscle rigidity can occur.

Treatment at the vets would focus on rehydrating the animal, using a sedative to reduce the stimulant effect of the theobromine and also using methods to eliminate the

substance from the animal’s body.

Chocolate is also toxic to cats, rodents and rabbits but information on what is a toxic dose for these animals is not known.

As well as chocolate, festive treats like Christmas cake, pudding and mince pies can pose a problem. Grapes, raisins, currants and sultanas can cause renal failure in dogs (and to a lesser extent, cats.) However, the level of toxic dose is unclear. Some dogs can eat a large quantity and have no toxic effects while other dogs have been known to suffer renal failure after consuming only a small amount. Initial symptoms may be vomiting and diarrhoeawith renal failure developing 24-72 hours after ingestion. Treatment would require IV fluids at a high rate to protect the kidneys and the use of activated charcoal to eliminate the substance.

Westover Veterinary Centre would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Christmas Christmas conjures comfort and warmth, with the fire all aglow, Yet outside it is cold and crisp, with a blanket of snow. Presents are ready to be opened, under the tree, The joy on children’s faces is there for all to see. Young and old we can all enjoy the message Christmas sends, Peace, love and happiness, with family and friends. So savour this time, with plenty of good cheer, Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Derek Philpott

Council launches Empty Property Matching Service to mark Empty Homes Week

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has launched a new free service to help put people with an empty property to sell in touch with those who want to buy them.

The North Norfolk Empty Property Matching Service will provide particulars of empty properties and alongside it a list of people seeking to buy empty properties in the North Norfolk district. General particulars (personal details will be kept confidential) are available on the NNDC website and the service also has its own dedicated phone line and email contact address. 20

The launch took place during Empty Homes Week at the end of November. The week is organised by the charity Empty Homes to highlight the waste of empty property nationwide, and to celebrate the success of numerous examples and new initiatives to bring empty homes back into use and to encourage more widespread action.

NNDC Cabinet Member for Strategic Housing Trevor Ivory said, “This council is determined to bring empty homes back into use. We have 887 long-term empty properties on the NNDC Council Tax records and I hope schemes like

the Empty Homes Matching Service will help people to bring them back to life. Houses should be lived in, not left empty, and if people aren’t willing to take action themselves, then we are perfectly prepared to take enforcement action at the appropriate time if we have to.”

To find out more about the NNDC Empty Property Matching Service, visit www.northnorfolk.org/housing/ phone 01263 516299 or email emptyhomes@north-norfolk.gov.uk

Dear Margaret

Could we, through The North Walsham Times, say a huge thank you to all the people and businesses of North Walsham and surrounding area, the Chamber of Trade, Town Council, Norman Lamb, Eric Seward and Liz Cornwall for all their support during the campaign to save Stead & Simpsons shoe shop from closure. Over 2000 names on a petition and numerous emails have been sent to Shoe Zones HQ in Leicester, the owners of Stead & Simpson. But unfortunately it all fell on deaf ears and we were closed on 24 November. It was part of the town’s heritage, trading successfully for 125 years. People needed a shoe shop, they were angry and upset. We still do not know why Shoe zone made the decision to close. Obviously they do not care about our community, but we the staff do. We listened and have now opened ‘The Shoe Shop’ in St Nicholas Court, so please support us again,we look forward to seeing you all. Once again thank you Margaret, Monica, Wendy & Gemma

FINAL NAIL IN THE COFFIN

Saturday afternoon in North Walsham was filled with people who are trying to keep the town going. Volunteers, Chamber of Trade, and the Town Council, with their brave Christmas lights volunteers. Great. But if you look into the window of what used to be Stead & Simpson’s shoe shop, you find a large notice, telling everyone this store is now closed. But, what makes it unbearable is the part where it tells you that you can shop on the Shoe Zone internet site or, in large letters ‘YOU CAN GO TO OUR NEAREST STORE AT CROMER.’ I have nothing against people shopping in Cromer, but, to tell customers to do this while closing our shop, is putting the final nail in the coffin. I am very pleased that Mr. & Mrs Bullimore are using their initiative by opening a new shoe shop in the Precinct. I hope the people of North Walsham will support this venture, instead of going elsewhere. This town needs you, the people, to respond in a positive way. If everyone who signed the petition support this shoe shop, it will be good news for the Bullimores and the staff, as well as the town, and it may pump new blood into the precinct. I hope you all agree with this sentiment. Liz Cornwall

Thanks

I would like to thank all my friends for the lovely cards I received on my 80th birthday and also wish them a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Best wishes, Daphne Hill

North Walsham Table Tennis Usher Doubles Up Again

Toby Usher found himself playing two matches in two divisions (a fatiguing twenty-seven sets) at the same time on derby night at North Walsham Sports Centre. In the first division, Usher joined NWSCD’s Mary Sawyer and Philip Stone as they hosted NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Simon Halliday and Paul Price. Stone beat Elliott 8-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-6. Usher took his sixth chance to force a decider, but a 5-2 lead in the fifth set gave Halliday confidence as he closed out the win for the loss of three more points. Sawyer edged out Price 12-10 in the fifth and Elliott was too strong for Usher. Price moved NWSCB 3-2 ahead with a five set victory over Stone. Sawyer came out on top of another tense five-setter against Halliday, before Usher took his first win in the first division with a four set victory over Price. Elliott and Halliday then had four set wins over Sawyer and Stone respectively before Usher and Stone edged out Elliott and Price in the doubles, as their 12-10 in the fourth set win sealed the draw that for a marathon match that had lasted over three and a half hours felt like

the right result. While all that was going on Usher was of course also playing in the second division match on the adjoining table, joining his NWSCC colleagues Chris Johnson and Phil Mole to face the NWSCE line-up of Tom Wardle, Edna Stone and Brenda Baldock with Usher taking a maximum but pushed the closest by a spirited performance from Baldock – the NWSCC player winning 12-10, 9-11, 11-8, 11-8. Wardle made Mole move as the NWSCC player won in five. Wardle also took a set from Usher and Johnson had to work hard to win 16-14, 11-6, 15-13. Wardle has only been able to be an active member of the table tennis club through several heart operations at Great Ormond Street Hospital and will need further surgery in the future, however because of the treatment he has received, he is able to represent the town both at table tennis and in the U13’s football. His mother Karen Wardle has been overwhelmed at the support from the hospital and will be taking part in the London to Paris bike ride in June next year in order to raise money for them and we wish her well arrive 20 mins early if you are new.
