Staff and Children Brave the Snow!

The hardy staff at the Federation Schools have braved the icy conditions to ensure the schools and Nursery have been open all week. The children have been rewarded with specially organised fun activities such as cups of hot chocolate and marshmallow treats, toasted in the schools own custom-made fire pit. They’ve enjoyed plenty of outdoor activities in the snow and indoor learning activities to explore and investigate this wintry weather.

“We understand the importance, for working families, of being able to keep the schools open, when it is safe to do so. Many of our staff live locally and so we have adequate staffing for the numbers of pupils we have had in the schools. Snowy days give us specially opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, have fun and learn about the seasons through firsthand experience!”

Multi-Faceted Popular Performer Makes His First Visit to Sheringham

An Evening With Richard Digance’ sees the multi-talented artist appear for the first time in a more intimate setting at heringham Little Theatre this month.

of Composers and Songwriters. He has supported Steve Martin in the USA, Robin Williams at The London Palladium and is included in The Virgin Anthology of Songwriters for his important contribution to British comedy songwriting. When presented with the Gold Award from the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters he was described as someone who for half a century has travelled the world with just a guitar and an immense collection of stories gathered through his own experiences.

Richard Digance is a rare performer in that he's respected by comedians for his original material and by musicians for being an accomplished performer/guitarist. His loyal following confirms his wide appeal, from the younger generation attracted by both his guitar playing and the fact he has inspired many modern-day performers, to the super-loyal who have followed Richard since the time he had his own ITV series and even further when he started out in folk clubs.

He has survived all trends with his two and a half hour one-man show, his summer festival appearances in the UK, the United States, Canada and Dubai, his cruise work and television appearances. He is both an accomplished musician, rated by many as one of Britain's greatest acoustic guitarists, inspired by his good friend Ralph McTell, and an entertainer who many younger comedians,

His evergreen career has been acknowledged through numerous awards within both the music and entertainment industries, from a BAFTA Nomination as a TV entertainer to a Gold Award from The British Academy

Energy Switching To Help North Norfolk Residents

Many residents of North Norfolk will soon be able to save money on their energy bills through a new scheme to help householders group together to negotiate lower energy tariffs.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) announced this week that North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has been successful in bidding for funding from the ‘Cheaper Energy Together’ fund, which will pay for the scheme. The Council was one of only 31 successful bids chosen to receive funding out of 114 received by the Department.

NNDC will use the funding to help set up a website where residents can submit their details to be included in a ‘reverse auction’ to find the cheapest energy tariff for their home. By grouping hundreds or thousands of households together, it is possible to negotiate much lower energy tariffs than if an individual was changing supplier on their own. Schemes elsewhere in the country have seen residents save an average of £171 per year on their bills.

about energy issues and more about how they can save money on bills.

John Lee, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, said “We are delighted to be one of the few local authorities in the country to be awarded this money from the Department of Energy and Climate Change. It will help us set up two new schemes to help local residents cut their energy bills. With the freezing temperatures we have seen in the last few weeks the timing couldn’t be more perfect, as people in the district are no doubt worrying about receiving their next energy bill and I urge everyone to sign up on the special web site as soon as the scheme is launched in the middle of February.”

The Council plans to launch the scheme in mid-February, following which householders will have several weeks to sign up to the scheme. After this registration period ends, a reverse auction will be carried out to find an energy supplier who can offer the best deal to these households. Everyone who signed up to the scheme will be offered the deal so they can see how much they stand to save compared to their existing tariff. If they make the decision to make the switch, this will be carried out automatically for them. Although the scheme will be exclusively available through the council’s website www.northnorfolk.org, support will be available for residents who don’t have access to the internet.

In a development to the scheme, which is unique to North Norfolk, the funding received from DECC will also pay for the launch of an ‘Energy Box’ for Town and Parish councils in the District. This will complement the energy switching scheme by helping residents find out information

North Walsham Times #415 2nd February 2013

North Walsham Times Expands

The North Walsham Times will continue to deliver 5800 copies through the letter boxes of residents in the town through 2013. However, we have been asked to expand our coverage into surrounding villages as well to enable those not on one of our regular rounds to collect their copy from convenient locations.

We will now have a circulation of 6,400. The pick-up points so far arranged are listed below - there are more to be agreed which we will list next month. The other two magazines in the Rose Villa Publications group - the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent will also be increasing the number of copies printed - Cromer will rise to 6000 in total and Sheringham to 5600. They will be covering locations such as Mundesley, the Runtons, Holt and Bodham as well as Aylmerton and Alby, which do not have a letterbox round. We do not know how many readers we have, but what we do know is that most people in North Walsham like to read our magazine. We hope that in the coming year we will be able to continue to make our magazines the most read in North Norfolk.

Celebrities back Norwich charity’s national fundraising campaign

‘Sock it to Eating Disorders’

Actors Stephen Fry, Victoria Wood, Celia Imrie, Michelle Collins, presenter Jake Humphrey and Towie actress Chloe Sims are amongst celebrities who are backing Norwich-based charity Beat’s national fundraising campaign – former Norwich City footballer Darren Eadie, Ironman Chrissie Wellington and regional BBC and ITV presenters are also getting involved.

Beat – the UK’s leading eating disorders charity, based in Norwich, is asking people to support their Sock it to Eating Disorders fundraising appeal during Eating Disorders Awareness Week 11-17 February. The charity provides a range of services specifically for Norfolk including a helpline, email service, self help and support groups and training for healthcare professionals.

During the week the charity is encouraging people to get silly with their socks – organising activities such as wearing silly socks to school for the day, decorating socks in Beat’s colours, knitting socks and selling them on Ebay for charity and getting sports teams to wear silly socks for a training session or match. The celebrities are decorating their socks with supportive messages to kick start the campaign.

Anyone interested in taking part can visit Beat’s website to sign up for a free Sock it to Eating Disorders fundraising pack: www.b-eat.co.uk The charity’s fundraising department would also love to hear of any activities email: fundraising@b-eat.co.uk

North Walsham Market Cross WI

The January meeting was a busy meeting and commenced with the singing of Jerusalem. There were lots of photographs on display which had been taken at the very enjoyable Christmas Party held in December. We were able to relive the entertaining hilarious pantomime also the balloon modelling competition entries with the variety of strange animal shapes.

Our speaker for the evening unfortunately had to cancel however she allowed her sewing items to be on display and our very own talented crafty ladies Barbara, Marian and Sally explained the history and methods of quilting. Thank you ladies.

The competition of the evening was an old piece of sewing and there were some interesting pieces on display. Barbara’s sampler sewn by an eight year old in the 1800’s was particularly fascinating.

The treasurer informed the group that we had done well at the coffee morning held in December with extra money going into our funds. The darts group and the tenpin bowlers have resumed meeting and the craft group commenced Thursday 17 January. New members are welcome at any of these activities.

Our next meeting is on 13 February and the speaker is Elizabeth Scott speaking on the “Living History of Blickling Hall” and the competition is an old object.

New members are always welcome so come along and join us. Our meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7.15pm at St Benet Hall, Vicarage Street North Walsham.

A Step Closer to Spring I’m glad we are into February, A step closer to Spring And in spite of the wintry weather The birds still sweetly sing. Snowdrops and dwarf cyclamen thrive Under the prunus tree, The colours are delightful, Such a joy to see. Lile spikes of green Are showing through the snow, Come March bright daffodils Will make a golden show. The birds hop towards me, They are short of seed and bread, I make sure they have drinking water In the pond by the shed. Snowflakes are falling, I can hardly see, It’s time for me to go indoors And make myself some tea. Diane Berthelot

THE ACOUSTIC STRAWBS

at the Auden Theatre Holt Friday 22 February at 7.30pm All seats £14 Box Office Tel 01263-713444 THE ACOUSTIC HEARTBEAT OF STRAWBS

The year 2012 marks the 43rd anniversary of the release of the first Strawbs album on A&M Records.

Acoustic Strawbs are David Cousins, Dave Lambert, and Chas Cronk, the front-line of the classic 1970s line-up of Britain’s most successful international folk-rock band, and who tour regularly as Acoustic Strawbs.

In the early 1970s Strawbs scored chart success in Britain with huge albums such as ‘Grave New World’ and ‘Bursting at the Seams’. From the mid-1970s as the group concentrated their attention on the United States and Canada where their albums, including the classics ‘Hero and Heroine’ and ‘Ghosts’, spent over fifty two weeks on the Billboard charts. Strawbs toured with the likes of Santana, Peter Frampton, The Eagles, REO Speedwagon, Joe Walsh, Blue Oyster Cult, King Crimson, and Frank Zappa.

David Cousins, leader of Strawbs, was awarded BPI platinum discs in recognition of worldwide sales of the albums ‘Grave New World’ and ‘Bursting at the Seams’. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2002, and was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Rick Wakeman on behalf of the Classic Rock Society.

Rick Wakeman played with the Strawbs for two years before moving on to achieve world-wide success with Yes, and as a solo artist. The much-loved Sandy Denny made an album with the Strawbs before she joined Fairport Convention.

Acoustic Strawbs shows receive rave reviews – “Carefully selecting their repertoire from less than obvious sources they invest the rarely performed material with considerable energy and thoughtful arrangements.”(Record Collector) “Hearing the brilliant Strawbs [at the Edmonton Folk Festival] was like a tutorial in UK folk music from the past 40 years. (Edmonton Sun)

“Unlike many groups that are past their commercial prime and churn out inferior, dispirited versions of the hits from their glory days, the Acoustic Strawbs stand out as a band that performs their old material with passion and precision. Furthermore, they have broken new ground by harnessing the power of their electric incarnation in an acoustic setting.” (Chicago Tribune) www.strawbsweb.co.uk

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER EARLY COLOUR IN THE GARDEN

January is not usually conducive to gardening. The first month of the year can bring wind and rain, frost and snow and freezing temperatures but there are the odd days when the sun shines, the air is warm and gardeners can persuade themselves that spring will come.

Some gardeners walk around their plots in the New Year and count the number of plants bearing flowers. Many of these flowers are small and subtle and would hardly be noticed in midsummer but on a chilly January day, when the garden is bare there is time to study the early blooms and marvel at their exquisite form. Some people are able to collect over twenty different flowers as they explore their winter garden but I was not able to rival this despite a few plants that were throwing out the odd bloom out of their normal season.

I was only able to pick eight different flowers (see photograph)so my New Year resolution is

to plant more winter flowering plants to enjoy next year. The following plants are worth consideration... Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’- a vigorous plant featuring sugar pink flowers. Prune to keep it under control. Needs full sun or partial shade. Sarcocca hookeriana – upright and compact with fine foliage, young stems flushed with pink purple and with flowers tinged the same hue. Undemanding but be sure to plant it near a path or your front door to appreciate the wonderful scent. Lonicera x purpusii – The winter honeysuckle that produces small lemon scented flowers. Needs plenty of room to spread. Full sun or partial shade. Iris unguicularis (Algerian Iris)- Looks delicate but is really tough. Best sited in stony ground at the bottom of a sunny wall. The flower buds can be cut to open indoors. Mahonia japonica ‘ Charity’– Large shrub with spiny leaves that produces fragrant pale yellow flowers that smell of Lily of the Valley. Easy to grow. Daphne bholua – Upright shrub that is good for small gardens. The variety ‘Jacqueline Postill’ is evergreen with intensely fragrant flowers

Sheringham Savoyards Final Performances

Sheringham Savoyards were formed in 1979 to present the works of Gilbert & Sullivan to the people of Sheringham and beyond! Since then they have performed all of the Operas, either as full shows or concert versions, mainly at The Little Theatre but at other venues as well. Sadly, after 34 years, and with a drop in membership, it has been decided that the Savoyards will finish after July this year.

However the Society is going out with two performances! On March 23rd there will be a ‘Come and Sing’ Pirates of Penzance at St Andrew’s Methodist Church at 7.30pm, and on June 20th & 21st a Final Final Farewell Performance at The Little Theatre Sheringham, of a concert version, with a difference, of H M S Pinafore. This was the Society’s first performance and therefore fitting that it should be the last. Ro Curtis, who played Josephine in 1979, will be Musical Director and Jason Bell will be Producer, while Lester Shaw will be accompanist. What is needed is a fantastic chorus. So any former members who would like to take part, please contact the Secretary Kath Whiting on 01263 821185 or Jason Bell on 01263 822105. This could be your last chance to sing with the Sheringham Savoyards so do please contact us, we would love to go out with, perhaps, the biggest chorus ever on the Little Theatre Stage, no matter how many headaches it may cause!

that are deep purple-pink outside and white within. Cornus mas – A late winter bloomer with small bright yellow flowers. Needs full sun or partial shade.

As I write this article the first snow of winter is falling and I wonder what the next few months will bring but whatever the weather January should be regarded as a time of hope and promise, the days are getting longer and precocious little snowdrops, crocuses, violets and primroses are promising spring. There are fat buds among the great coloured leaves of the bergenias, and new leaves are pushing through the ground everywhere. Things are happening above the surface and below, and for the gardener another year of thrills and adventure is beginning.

If you are interested in extending your own range of winter flowering plants make a note that on February 21st , Trevor Harrison of South Creake Nurseries will be giving expert, professional advice on introducing early colour in the garden to members of the Sheringham Horticultural Society. Everyone is welcome to attend in St Josephs Parish Centre commencing at 7.30pm. (£2 charge for non members). Bob Wilkinson

Council Gallery Hosts New Exhibition

North Norfolk District Council’s public art gallery is presenting a new exhibition entitled ‘Coast and Country’ featuring paintings by local artist Karen Rowlands of Roughton, near Cromer.

The exhibition, running until 11 March this year, includes many new paintings of the north Norfolk coast and countryside. The detailed paintings cover a variety of subjects from Stiffkey round to the Broads, each painted with a fascination for the play of light, and an enjoyment of the richness and vitality of colour involved in bringing each view to life.

Karen studied at Ravensbourne College of Art and Design and Loughborough College of Art and Design and her initial wonder at the beauty to be found in Norfolk has developed over 25 years into an enduring love of the county’s coast and countryside.

NNDC seeks to offer opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit first-floor ‘gallery’ area in its Holt Road offices in Cromer, and in turn provides staff and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of different artists’ work. Currently six exhibitions are held annually, open for view to the public during normal office hours, Monday – Thursday 8.30am – 5pm, Wednesday 10am – 5pm, Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm.

Gas Boilers to Golf Balls! Way back in 1995 Ray Adams set up Aquaflow Plumbing & Heating after leaving the police.

Over the years Ray gradually specialised the business to focus on Gas servicing, breakdowns and repairs. In April 2007 son Chris moved back to Norfolk and joined the firm as a partner engineer. The office and administration was firstly managed by Ray’s daughter, Emma, and now by Chris’s wife,

Heidi. It is important to them to keep the company family led and run to enable a more personal approach.

Over the intervening years they have become specialised in installation work and plumbing as well as adding qualifications in LPG and Oil (OFTEC) heating, offering a more comprehensive service to the North Norfolk area. The 'of Sheringham' part of the name was added a few years ago to ensure a unique, local and community-based feel to the business, something they feel is important.

Now changes are afoot - founder Ray is going to take retirement as from 31 January. To enable the company to maintain it’s current high level of service though, more staff were needed. Joining the firm is Simon Patrick, a fully qualified Gas Engineer and former sub-contractor for

the company. Filling out the team is Dan Birchnall, who was taken on as Trainee Heating Engineer in 2011, a pleasant, local lad, with great customer skills and commitment. Chris will now be Senior Partner and will lead the team, but will still be able to call on the services of his dad. "He has a great knack of being able to fault-find," commented Chris, "and I am pleased that he will still be available when we get really busy for the next couple of years. And though he will be missed, we have a very good team to carry out all the work and have added extra skills with Simon's experience in underfloor and renewable energy heating, from Solar to Air Source." “Even in the recent bad weather we have been able to maintain a full-working service including a 24hr emergency call-out service to our valued regular customers”. Chris, Heidi, Dan & Simon want to wish Ray best wishes in his retirement and promise not to disturb his golf too much!! "Please can we also take this opportunity to thank our customers, old & new, for their continued support and promise them the same level of expertise and service in the future with our new founded team."

NATIONAL BLOOD SERVICE

Charity offers help for carers

Three out of five people will become carers at some point in their lives – caring for a partner, friend or child who is sick or disabled.

Carers in Norfolk will now find it easier to get the help they need. Local charity, Crossroads Care has been serving the local community for over 25 years and now has a new lease of life, having recently merged with sister organisations in Suffolk and North Essex whole of East Anglia.

Crossroads Care East Anglia provides crucial support services for carers and people with care needs. They employ carefully selected and trained Carer Support Workers who will come into the home to help look after people with care needs and provide support for their carers. They will step into the carer’s shoes, so that they can take a well deserved break.

In addition, the charity runs clubs and day care services. They provide staff for two clubs in North Walsham which support people with disabilities and their carers.

To find out more visit: www.crossroadseastanglia.org.uk or phone the North Walsham office: 01692 500006. The office is open 8.00 am to 2.00 pm, Monday to Friday.

Government money will help save on energy bills in Norfolk

The Government has awarded £44,500 funding to councils in Norfolk to help people with high energy costs.

North Norfolk District Council will receive £18,500 funding as part of the Coalition’s ‘Cheaper Energy Together’ programme promoting collective switching and collective purchasing schemes. Norwich City Council will receive £26,000. The money is part of a £46 million pot made available by the Department of Energy and Climate Change for local authorities to help reduce fuel poverty, boost energy efficiency and encourage collective switching across the country.

Collective purchasing and switching occur when a group of likeminded consumers band together to negotiate a better deal with their gas and electricity suppliers. There is no set model for how individual schemes operate, but they are usually facilitated by a third party working on customers’ behalf.

'Challenging Arthritis'

Challenging Arthritis courses are delivered on behalf of Arthritis Care by volunteers who have arthritis themselves so know what it's like to live day-to-day with the condition.

The course in North Walsham will be delivered over two and a half hour sessions each Tuesday morning starting on 26 March, for six weeks.

The course is free and teaches people techniques to manage their pain, to strengthen their coping skills, and most importantly, to improve their quality of life. The courses compliment hospital and GP care and the programme aims to tackle pain, fatigue, depression and loss of confidence experienced by people with arthritis.

Medication is just one way to treat arthritis, but there's always something you can do yourself to improve your emotional and physical well-being. It is estimated that around 8.5 million people in the UK have arthritis and this could well rise to 17 million people living with osteoarthritis alone, by 2030.

Anyone with arthritis who lives in North Walsham and the surrounding area is invited to take advantage of this free course, which might just change their life. The funding for the courses ends at the end of April, so this might be the last chance to benefit. Classes are usually run with between 14 - 18 people per group

To register please call 0845 650 4400 or visit www.arthritiscare.org.uk 16

Commenting, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “I have been working with Norfolk Rural Community Council to promote community buying which can save people money on their energy bills. I am really pleased the Coalition recognises the potential for people to save money by coming together to negotiate or change energy supplier. This money will help NNDC make that happen in our area.”

Commenting on the funding, Liberal Democrat Energy Secretary Edward Davey said "We need to find new ways to help people with their energy bills, working with communities and councils across the country. Funding will also be used to drive forward collective purchasing and switching initiatives at a local level, helping consumers get a better deal on their energy bills. I am delighted so many organisations want to run new co-operative schemes to help people, especially the fuel poor, to get the best deals in the market."

Meanwhile, the recent cold weather prompted Cold Weather Payments for eligible residents in parts of Norwich and North Norfolk. These automatic payments help people on low incomes to stay warm during cold spells. There should be no need to make a claim, but people who think they may be entitled but do not receive a payment should contact the Department for Work and Pensions.

Several other cats and kittens have also been chosen including Moya, one of our long term residents. We are particularly pleased that she has finally found a loving home as she and her kittens were dumped on someone’s doorstep in a cardboard box last year. Needless to say, their places have quickly been filled and we still have cats and kittens waiting to join us.

As I look out of my window this evening and see the ground covered in snow it brings to mind the wonderful work our fosterers do. Most of the cats that are in care are housed in pens in their gardens. Whatever the weather the cats need feeding and watering and their pens need to be cleaned and litter trays changed. Hot or cold, wet or windy, their fosterers will be there to care for them. Fortunately all the pens are heated and the cats also have heat pads to keep their beds warm and cosy. The litter tray is outside the housing unit but in extreme conditions the food and water are put inside. Taking the cats to the vets for their checks, to be vaccinated or because they are ill is just another facet of the care they provide. They are also very accommodating when people come to see their charges, as potential new owners. They do all this as well as looking after their Ginny, one of our older cats. families and their own animals, She came in with sister Stella because plus some of them go to work of a relationship breakdown. too. They really are wonderful, dedicated cat lovers and we really appreciate what they do.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

If, however, you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Paws for thought this winter with Animal Magic Dog Club

Caring for your dog is a year round job, but in the cold weather we need to pay extra attention to the health and wellbeing of our four legged friends.

Here are our top tips on keeping your dog in tip top condition during the winter months: â–ş

â–ş â–ş â–ş

â–ş

â–ş

â–ş

â–ş

Rock salt is used to melt ice on footpaths and may irritate the paw pads. Always rinse and dry your dog's feet after a walk to avoid cracked, sore pads. The fur between the toes should be kept short to avoid uncomfortable ice balls forming when out on a frosty walk. Dogs with short or fine coats will especially feel the cold; consider keeping them warm in a cosy dog coat. Don’t let your dog drink from puddles; they could contain traces of Antifreeze which is poisonous. It smells and tastes good to your dog, but it can be lethal. Try to maintain a regular routine with your dog. Although you may not feel like going for a walk on dark wintry mornings and evenings, the exercise will keep you both, happy, healthy and fit. Always wear reflective clothing to make yourself visible in the dark. The same applies to your dog; invest in a reflective dog coat, collar or lead. Don’t leave your dog outside for long periods of time in cold weather, if it’s too cold for you to sit outside then its too cold for them. Always consult your Vet if you are concerned about your dog’s health.

Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham is a fun, family orientated club offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs.

The Art of Food Trail promoted by the COAST Arts Festival, runs until Easter and there's still time for your vote to be included in the prize draw.

The lavish fold out leaflet lists more than 30 Restaurants, galleries, delicatessens and artists proving that North Norfolk is a great place for fresh art, fresh air and fresh food.

As well as local information, a fun quiz and the prize meal entry form, there's a useful map pinpointing a great selection of eateries offering special “Art Themed” dishes, and all priding themselves on fresh local produce, game and seafood.

Traditional pub fare and local atmosphere is on offer at the Lighthouse Inn, Walcott, The Dukes Head, Corpusty, The Lobster in Sheringham, and The Kings Head in Cromer. Delicious cakes, coffees & teas from the Corner House at Mundesley, Huckleberries in Cromer, and the charming Creakey Cafe at North Creake.

Enjoy the fine dining experience at The Grove, and Virginia Court Hotel in Cromer, The Market Place Restaurant in Aylsham, The Bank Restaurant in Sheringham, Butlers Restaurant and The Lawns in Holt, each with its own special elegance and character.

There’s a wonderful range of cafes on the trail offering everything from light snacks to delicious home cooked meals. The Jetty Cafe, Breakers and Blue Sky Cafe in Cromer, Whelk Coppers in Sheringham and the delightful Art Cafe in Glandford are all completely individual in style and lively local meeting places.

Unusual tasty treats, local produce, and wholefoods can be found at Picnic Fayre of Cley, Cromer Farm Shop and the All Natural Co. of Sheringham and Burnham Market.

Selected galleries include Made In Cley, The Red Lobster in Sheringham, Bircham in Holt, Big Blue Sky in Wells, Burnham Grapevine and The Gallery in Cromer. All offer a superb collection of contemporary art, design, jewellery and crafts, and feature the work of local artists.

The COAST Festival Art of Food Trail publication has been made possible by generous support from North Norfolk Fisheries Local Action Group, Marine Management

Organisation and the Norfolk Coast Partnership Sustainable Development Fund. All share the aim of maintaining and developing our local economy by encouraging responsible tourism... and by linking to the COAST Festival we can all share in the enjoyment of Good Food and Great Art events. News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon

We have some terrific plans for the coming year and I am delighted to be able to announce one of the first of our new menus is the exciting ‘Tasting Menu’, which we are launching on 22 February. This amazing Five Course set meal, offering the very best produce from across East Anglia, will be available every Thursday to Sunday evening in our Barn Restaurant. Priced at just £30 per person, there is certain to be lots of interest, so my advice is to book early.

If you are celebrating Valentine’s Day on 14 February our romantic Three Course Meal at just £22 per person is ideal. Served in our restaurant it is a great way of treating the one you love.

If you prefer to wait until the weekend then our Five Course Meal is perfect. At just £30 per person it is the ideal Valentine’s treat. Or if you prefer, try our special Valentine’s Sharers Menu just £20 per couple, served in the bar with music from the Norfolk Jazz Quartet live in the bar from 8.30pm.

Mother’s Day is fast approaching and we have decided to offer our very popular ‘Family Roast Sharer Menu’. Choose one of our three roast meats cooked to your requirements and brought to your table for you to carve and share with all the family. With a selection of seasonal vegetables and all the trimmings, I don’t think there is a better way to celebrate Mother’s Day.

Full details can be found on our website www.whitehorseoverstrand.co.uk

Nathan’s Universal Red Onion Jam

Ingredients 4 Large Red Onions finely sliced 1 Cup Red Wine Vinegar 6 Tablespoons Sugar 1 Cinnamon stick Water to cover if required Seasoning Method Peel and finely slice the onions, and add these to the rest of the ingredients in a saucepan. Simmer on a low heat, stirring occasionally and add more sugar if required. Remove from heat when a jam consistency is achieved. Allow to cool and store in sealed jars in the fridge. It is a great jam to have in the house its versatility makes it an ideal accompaniment to roasts, bacon or cheese sandwiches or simply add a spoonful to your favourite snack. Stored in a Kilner or similarly sealed jar, it will last for months.

Labour select Cromer publisher Jen Emery as by-election candidate

North Norfolk Labour Party has selected Cromer publisher and business woman Jen Emery as their candidate for the district council by-election taking place in the town on 21 February.

Mrs Emery runs the independent publisher Salt Publishing in the town, alongside her husband Chris, and the company narrowly missed out on winning the prestigious Man Booker Prize for literature in 2012.

She is no stranger to local politics having campaigned to save the jobs at the iconic Cromer Crab Factory, and fought against the district council’s decision to increase parking fees in the tourist town. More recently she has passionately petitioned against the decision to cuts the town’s ambulance fleet through Labour’s Act on Ambulances campaign. This led to a partial u-turn from the East of England Ambulance Service Trust, but concerns about cuts and response times still remain an important issue in the town.

Jen lives in Cromer with her three children attending local schools. Before creating the publishing firm she spent twenty years working in the NHS and working to help some of society’s most vulnerable people.

On her selection Jen told North Norfolk Labour Party members: “I am delighted to have been selected as the Labour candidate for the Cromer by-election.

I live and work in the town and can think of no better place to be with my family.

As a business owner I understand the pressures faced by small businesses in the town, and the difficulties hard-working families face due to cuts and the rising cost of living.

I have had many years of experience working in the NHS which is one of the reasons I threw myself into the Act on Ambulances campaign when it was announced our fleet was to be reduced while response times are poor.”

More information can be found about Jen Emery at www.jenemery.co.uk

Dear Grumpy Old Man

Mothers' Union

Tuesday 8 January was our first meeting of the new year and we welcomed the Rev Nigel Paterson as our speaker. Nigel opened the meeting with prayers and then gave a very interesting and thought provoking talk centred around the Parable of the Weeds which tied in with the Mothers' Union theme for 2013 'The seeds we sow help us grow'.

Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 12 February at 2.30 pm in the St Nicholas Room when our speaker will be a member of the Magdalene Group, a Norfolk charity formed in 1992 in response to concerns about the number of people working as prostitutes on the streets of Norwich. Visitors and new members will be most welcome.

For further information please contact Ann Herd on 01692 402705.

Taste and See at Liaison

‘Stupid Cupid’

On 7 January we met to discuss New Year Resolutions and new beginnings. We talked about the most popular resolutions, how hard were they to keep and why we feel we need to make them.

Charity Party 9TH February

The common points were that we feel the need for change in some part of our lives and perhaps dissatisfaction about how we feel about ourselves.

Rossi’s Leisure Centre North Walsham

From a Christian perspective we talked about how we do not have the willpower when surrounded by so many temptations and that fear of failing may stop us even trying, but God knows our weaknesses and steps in to help if we are willing to let Him.

North Walsham Table Tennis Hancock Passes Double Century

John Hancock has now clocked up more than 200 consecutive singles wins in the North Norfolk League. With the player from Hunworth finishing on 199 wins not out at the end of 2012 it was inevitable that he would reach the landmark at the start of 2013 and still the question remains can any player in the League end this astonishing run? In the first division Outlaw’s Hancock, Colin Humphries and Steve Patterson hosted NWSCD’s Mary Sawyer, Philip Stone and Joe Kirkup.

Humphries was powerful on both wings as his cunning serves won the opener against Stone in straight. It was then Hancock’s turn to be devious with spin serves and despite being manoeuvred around the table by Sawyer with effect, he ran out an 11-3, 11-7, 11-7 winner.

Kirkup had three set points including two at 10-8 in the first set of his battle with Patterson, but the Outlaw took his fourth chance to claim the set 16-14. Kirkup again had Patterson under pressure in the next two sets but Patterson won the last five points from 6-8 to close out the second set and recovered from

0-4 in the third to close out his win in straight. Next Stone won the better rallies and made a mini-comeback from 0-6 in the third, but Hancock was always in control of his 11-7, 11-6, 11-6 win. A 5-0 start helped Humphries take the first set from Kirkup, but the NWSCD player took his third chance to level and Kirkup continued to dominate superbly as he went on to win 3-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-3.

Patterson was too fast for Sawyer and then tight play from Hancock saw him beat Kirkup also in three. Stone saved two match-points at 8-10 down in the third against Patterson and took that third set 14-12. Stone saved a further two match-points as he again came back from 8-10 in the fourth, but this time Patterson closed out the win by taking the set 12-10.

A bizarre topsy-turvy contest followed as Sawyer saved a set-point and took the first set against Humphries 17-15, but then Humphries won the second set 11-0. The momentum swung again as Sawyer led the third 8-1 and in the end her strong hitting got her through the finish line in four.

The doubles saw Kirkup and Stone play well to take a set, but Hancock and Humphries won 11-7, 11-2, 8-11, 11-8 to conclude an 8-2 match win.

Most of the following week’s matches were postponed due to the recent wintry weather, but the one game that survived the snow saw Backhanders host NWSCB at Cromer Tennis Club. Simon Halliday failed to capitalise on a 6-1 lead in the decider as Paul Warner won in five sets and he also had an easy win over a highly frustrated Dennis Elliott as Warner’s maximum helped Backhanders to a 7-3 win.
