St. Nicholas House School visits Carrow Road

The children of Form 5 from St Nicholas House School recently enjoyed a day out at Carrow Road, which for the many Norwich City fans amongst them, was a real treat.

Sports reporter Beth, aged 10, writes: “We were greeted by Paul who showed us around for the morning. Firstly we dropped our lunch off at the Study Centre and Paul explained what we would be doing for the day.

Our morning started in the Press Conference Room. Here we had to ask questions to a panel of three people to try and find out what happened in a pretend incident. The aim was to discover the event that took place the previous night and report on it. This was fun as until you asked questions you didn’t know what had happened.

We then returned to the Study Centre and used computers to write up our story in the form of a newspaper article for The Daily Norwich.

We ate lunch looking over the pitch and to our surprise Norwich were unveiling their new player who they had just signed, Luciano Becchio, so our school was lucky to catch a first look at him and he even waved to us!

After lunch we were taken around by Becky who showed us a short film on the history of Norwich City and we then had a quiz. We then toured the stadium visiting the pitch side, dugouts, players changing rooms and the trophy cabinet. My favourite part was the changing rooms and seeing a big bath which gets filled with ice and after a game all players have to take an ice bath for four minutes to help their muscles repair.

It was a really interesting day, particularly getting to see other parts of the ground that you don’t see when you go to watch a football match. Thank you to everyone who made it possible”.

When the former Battle of Britain station was listed for closure by the end of 2006 it was decided to rename the Club as the Broadland MRC in December 2004; this in anticipation of the inevitable shut-down. The railway is owned by a small group of enthusiasts and is operated entirely on a not for profit basis, with any profits being reinvested. With the dedication and commitment of a small team of paid staff and active volunteers the railway now carries over 100,000 passengers each year.

Andrew Tunwell, General Manager, says “the volunteers’ contribution is essential to the running of the railway and its long term future. Volunteering for the Bure Valley Railway is a great way to get involved with the local community, make new friends and learn new skills. Whatever your age, whether you are male or female, if you have a couple of hours to spare or can make a more regular commitment, we would welcome your help”.

Limited spaces are available for this special package and therefore must be pre-booked (Adults £22.00, Children £11.00).

“The most gifted jazz singer this country has produced in twenty years” Clive Davis – The Sunday Times

Linn recording artist and BBC Radio 3 presenter Claire Martin has spent the last 25 years honing the craft of jazz singing. To worldwide critical acclaim she has established herself as a tour de force on the UK jazz scene, gaining many awards, including winning the British Jazz Awards six times- along the way.

Thanks to her jazz loving parents, Claire grew up in a household full of great music. She became a professional singer at 19, and three years later she realised her dream of singing at Ronnie Scott’s legendary jazz club in Soho. Signed to Linn Records in 1984 Claire has since released 15 cds with the label, collaborating with musical luminaries including Martin Taylor, John Martyn, Stephane Grappelli, Mark Nightingale, Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, Jim Mullen and Nigel Hitchcock on many of these recordings.

Claire has performed all over Europe and Asia with her trio and she also performs regularly with Richard Rodney Bennett in an intimate duo setting both in England and in America where they play to sell out crowds at venues including the prestigious Algonquin Hotel in New

York City. Claire is also a featured soloist with the Halle Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the RTE Concert Orchestra, the BBC Big Band and the BBC Concert Orchestra. The BBC Radio 3 programme Jazz Line Up, which she co-presents with Julian Joseph, is now in its 13th year and Claire has interviewed many of her musical heroes such as Pat Metheny, the late Michael Brecker, Brad Mehldau and Roy Hargrove.

Her 2009 CD ‘A Modern Art’ prompted Jazz Times USA to claim: “She ranks among the four or five finest female jazz vocalists on the planet”.

Claire was thrilled to win both the 2009 and 2010 ‘Best Vocalist’ category at the British Jazz Awards and toured extensively throughout the UK, Scandinavia, Russia and China,

At the Queen’s Birthday Honours in June 2011, Claire was awarded an OBE for her Services to Jazz.

Chinese New Year Celebrations at St. Nicholas House School

As a treat after the recent spell of cold weather, the children and staff at St. Nicholas House School celebrated the Chinese New Year with a special Chinese Lunch.

Form 5 pupil Raphael reports: “On Tuesday 29 January we had a Chinese lunch to celebrate the Chinese New Year, which in 2013 is the year of the snake. The meal consisted of sweet and sour chicken, egg fried rice, beef chow mein, prawn crackers and a spring roll which all tasted great. The hall had been decorated with Chinese lanterns and paper parasols and as we ate we had Chinese music playing in the background. Many thanks to the cooks, and I think I speak for everyone when I say it was lovely!”

Letter to the Residents from North Walsham Town Council Re Car Parking I am taking this unusual step of writing to inform you of North Walsham Town Council’s offer to take over the lease of a small part of Midland Road Car Park, run under a lease agreement with Norfolk County Council (NCC) by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) and the Car Park in Mundesley Road owned by NNDC, and NNDC decision to withdraw from discussions.

Back in 2011 the NNDC Conservative administration, decided that they were going to introduce season tickets only for both of these two Car Parks. The Town Council were concerned of the adverse effect it would have on those who use Midland Road to park and go by train or the students of Paston College, plus the effect it would have on traders whose customers used the Mundesley Road Car Park which had a maximum two hour free parking. We had a meeting in January 2012, where the idea of taking them on was raised.

Having established the running costs, we offered to pay the NNDC the yearly costs whilst we considered our options. This offer was rejected out of hand and we were told that we had to take over the leases of both Car Parks.

The Town Council were amazed at this rejection and asked for a meeting - despite several requests no meeting was offered. We very reluctantly decided that we would go down the route of taking on the leases and after several attempts, a meeting was arranged for the 17 August with Officers of the NNDC.

At this meeting we made it clear that what they were doing was against the Travel Plan, against the Mary Portus project both of which the NNDC were actively involved including using officer time. Also both the Chamber of Trade

and Paston College had made their objections known.

However we discussed the Heads of Terms (HoT) and agreed several points. Nothing was heard from the NNDC until November when the HoT document arrived containing none of the important points we agreed. We responded saying that without changes this could not be signed. During this time a letter was written to NNDC on 1 October - no reply was received until 2 November 2012.

In December we received a letter stating that the idea of us leasing had now been withdrawn, and that the process of making both Car Parks ‘season tickets only’ was to commence, as it was taking up too much officer time. Despite being told to the contrary, this letter also revealed that Fakenham Town Council who had a free Car Park, had not signed. It should be pointed out that Fakenham had one flat piece of land with a fence round it and one owner, unlike ours.

Throughout the year Town & District Cllr Eric Seward was working behind the scenes (with my knowledge) to gain all the information we needed to ensure that what we were going to do was right for the people of North Walsham and the surrounding parishes, and that we had all the facts.

During this whole process, the Town Council was being given misleading and inaccurate information, making any positive decision difficult. We were advised by Cllr Trevor Ivory at a Town Council Meeting that NO ONE IDEA FITS ALL, at the same time we were being advised by Cllr Wyndham Northan (both are Conservative & District Cabinet Members) that everybody was to be treated the same except Wells-next-the-sea.

Last year Cllr Seward and I met with the new portfolio holder Cllr Rhodri Oliver and having discussed the problems took

him around the car parks so that he could see for himself the issues. We mentioned our original offer of paying the bills and he felt that was the best solution, however his colleagues who have no representatives in North Walsham either on the Town or District Council’s disagreed and we were told lease or nothing.

The Surface of the Mundesley Road was a real issue for us as we had been advised in last March that the potholes had been dealt with at a cost of some £5000, and should not be a problem for years to come, which is clearly not the case.

Since April last year there has been no enforcement on Mundesley Road so no income for the NNDC has been forthcoming. They could have had at least £8000+ any enforcement payments had they accepted our offer.

The projection of income by NNDC for these to car parks via season tickets do not stack up as they would have to sell an additional 45 plus season tickets just to meet their basic costs, and who would pay £200 to park on Mundesley Road.

There is also the additional cost of some £40,000 paid for the wall on the Mundesley Road Car Park and a further £1100 (since the investment of the £5000) to keep filling the pot holes.

The Town Council believes also that Midland Road Car Park would be confusing as only a little part will be liable to the season ticket charge as NCC has stated that if it was introduced over the whole area they would want their share.

We ask that if you are affected please write to the Chief Executive of NNDC to express your concerns, the matter will also be aired at the Town Meeting which is held at the Community Centre and is open to all residents on April 2nd at 7:30pm. Cllr Dave Robertson Town Mayor

Royal British Legion – Women’s Section will continue to meet quarterly in 2013 but would welcome some new members to make the meetings more fulfilling. The next meeting is at 2pm on 26 March at St Nicholas Rooms in North Walsham – new members will be very welcome.

Sanders Coaches Ltd are certainly keeping their eye on the ball

After a successful taster session in the summer, North Walsham girls under 12s was formed. The team was lucky enough to sign up 10 keen local young footballers. The team now competes in the under 12s Norfolk Women’s & Girls Football League, training once a week on Wednesdays with matches taking place on Saturdays. The girls went on to win the first game of the season 5-0 and now sit mid table in the league. The girls are run by Josh Roper and Georgia Bryant who recently passed their level 1 coaching award. Just a few weeks into the season the team approached Mr Charles Sanders, MD of Sanders Coaches Ltd who kindly agreed to sponsor the brand new kit. ‘The team are constantly improving week by week, all of them have been brilliant so far and have been a joy to coach. The team hopes to stay together for the next few years’.

The Sainsbury’s Community Grant scheme, helping charitable groups in the local community, is funded by sales of ‘Bags for Life’. So for customers at Sainsbury’s North Walsham buying a ‘Bag for Life’, this means that they are not only doing great things for the environment, but are also making a contribution to their local community.

Sainsbury’s North Walsham Store Manager, Rob Wilkinson, said “Our store is at the heart of the local community and it is important that we can do as much as we can to support it. When we heard about Suffield Park Bowls Club, we were really pleased to be able to help out.”

Last year alone the Community Grants scheme provided £135k worth of donations, nominated by depot and store managers and colleagues from store nationwide. North Walsham Times 417 March 2nd 2013

A Storming Performance by Paston Sixth Form College Far Eastern Theatre Company

One of Shakespeare’s visionary comedies The Tempest was the ambitious new production of Paston’s nationally acclaimed Far East Theatre Company last month.

The fast paced and dynamic production was performed by a 20 strong cast and enjoyed by packed audiences of young and old over three evenings. The Tempest believed to be written in 1610-11 is set in a remote island where Prospera the rightful Duke of Milan, played brilliantly by Natasha Rowan, plots to restore his daughter Miranda played to perfection by Joanna Maxwell to her rightful place, using magic and illusion. There was an enchanting performance of Aerial, spritely played as one spirit by three actors, Eloise Heath, Siobhan Pearson and Joseph Kenny. This was contrasted by the strong and dominant Caliban, a savage and deformed slave played by the excellent Chloe Morris. While the play portrays Prospero as a rational magician it shows Sycorax played by Naomi Tolley as

Tempest cast and group photos

a destructive magician. All the audience enjoyed the drunken antics and comic scenes played by Ryan Livermore as Stephano the butler and Trinculo the jester played by Georgie Lee. There were also notable performances by Joshua Ryan as Alonso King of Naples, his son Chocolate was very much in evidence at our meeting at Liaison in Ferdinand played by February, especially in the form of the delicious ‘Squidge’ served up as Zachary Burbridge, a taster. Because the word doesn’t seem enticing it is not until you see it and taste it that it really is good (if you like chocolate biscuits, butter, condensed milk and chocolate that is!)

Taste and See

Which is what ‘Taste and See’ is all about – learning about Jesus and the Christian Faith in tasty, bite sized pieces that hopefully will help you get a better glimpse of what it all means and at the same time sampling the wonderful treats on offer at Liaison.

Our next meeting is on the theme ‘Watch out, there’s a thief about’. Do you feel that your peace of mind or your health or freedom has been snatched from you? Is it possible to get it back?

Come and share this with is on Monday 4 March at 2.30pm at Liaison in Market Street, North Walsham

North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind

After the Christmas Break everyone was ready for the first meeting of the year. Forty-three members attended and enjoyed an afternoon of musical entertainment by our old favourites, the Den Barrie Duo. This was followed by tea, which included the scrumptious cakes made by Cynthia Clare, and served by the lovely, smiley ladies who help in the kitchen each month.

Christine Riseborough had worked particularly hard to produce sixteen beautiful birthday posies, which were very warmly received. Many thanks to all the Committee for their work which makes the Club run so smoothly.

Antonia , Prospera’s brother played by Sophie George, Gonzala played by Olivia Richards and a very convincing Sebastian played by Matilda Lysaght. At the start and end of the play we all enjoyed the Mariners played by Charlotte Richmond, Courtney Howells, Will Smith and Francesca Bollingbroke, and led by Zack Dyable as the Boatswain.

The show was directed by Simon Thompson who created a stunning play which had the audience captivated from the first few seconds. The performance reversed the traditional staging and position of the audience to create a visually impressive island world. Weeks of rehearsals paid off, with scenes creatively weaving together a story of magic and intrigue. It was brilliantly and effectively edited by George Norton, Head of Far East and the Department. It included original awe inspiring music compositions by Harry Edwards an ex Paston student. Several local schools supported the production including Aldborough Primary, Broadland High and North Walsham High.

Natasha Rowan said “playing Prospera in the Tempest has been an enormous challenge, because it’s such a famous role, usually played by an older actor, with lots of speeches of enormous length and poetic complexity”

Much more than Flowers Emms Stems at Southrepps is much more than a florist.

Yes they do specialise in floral displays of all kinds - for Weddings, Funerals and special occasions such as the up-coming Mother's Day. As well they are part of the Eflorist network so can make UK and International arrangements as well as delivering locally across North Norfolk. However they have many lovely handmade items from local suppliers and from far afield too.

"We have unique gifts, many from local suppliers such as 'Wooden It Be Lovely' who make handmade seasonal items such as hearts for Valentine's Day, handmade bunting and items with a seaside theme."

Handmade jewellery from Aviv in Israel is lovingly crafted in silver and semi-precious stones to suit every occasion. There are glass and ceramic vases, chocolates, helium balloons, Teddy Bears, local honey from Gimingham, handmade goodies from Bali, even Kew Gardens.

Something different for the gardener (or non-gardener) with special greetings cards which you plant in the ground from which flowers will grow.

"We're not difficult to find," said Emma. "Coming from Cromer, take the left turn at the crossroads (signed for Southrepps) just before you get to Thorpe Market, then turn immediately left again into the unmarked Hall Road and you will find us on the right hand side a few hundred yards down the road. And there is plenty of parking space."

requirements for the big day.

"This seating area is vital for making arrangements for weddings and funerals, we can now relax and take the time needed to understand what is needed to get the arrangements right for the occasion."

Emms Stems also has a really useful Reminder Service, which help to make sure you don't forget that important person or occasion. Just visit www.emmsstems.co.uk and fill in the reminder service form or call into the shop and see Emma about filling the form in with you. Then Emma will send you either a text or email a week before the event to remind you to order your flowers.

Final word from Emma, "After two years building up Emms Stems, I would like to thank all my friends and close family that have helped to grow our fledgling business, without them we would not have done so well so quickly."

Any business needs the personal touch when dealing with the big special occasion (full wedding service, corporate) and Emma has now a comfortable seating area so that customers can take their time and talk through their

Merchant Navy - Unsung Heroes Not Sinking Without Trace Research Roadshow

Without the Merchant Navy, Britain would not, and could not, have survived the Second World War. Yet the stories of the brave men who served under the ‘Red Duster’ flag have largely been ignored – until now. Cromer can make the difference!

Keystage Arts and Heritage is collecting stories of Merchant Navy veterans as part of a large-scale project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. They are also working with the Merchant Navy Association and historians from Anglia Ruskin University. Now they need the help of local people to research and gather these stories.

48

We invite local people to attend the free Merchant Navy at War Roadshow. Keystage will show you how to research Merchant Navy stories, tell you about their exciting project and the amazing discoveries already made. They will tell you about the project’s unique exhibition, book and touring play not to mention a dedicated website in which the stories will be held for future generations. .

.

We are now taking bookings for Mother’s Day and our very popular ‘Family Roast Sharer Menu’ is attracting a lot of attention. It’s a great way of enjoying a real family meal with everyone getting just what they want. Choose one of our three roast meats cooked to your requirements and brought to you table for you to carve and share with all the family. With a selection of seasonal vegetables and all the trimmings, I don’t think there is a better way to celebrate Mother’s Day.

Thursday 28th February sees the launch of our ‘Taster Evenings’. Served in the Barn Restaurant it is a 6 Course Meal of small dishes giving customers the chance to experience new and different tastes. Our new Wine List will give diners the chance to sample new and exciting wines as well as

enjoying the old favourites. with courses compliment with a choice of wines. Booking is essential and with the price set at just £30 per person we expect there will be high demand. The Taster Evenings are every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Our normal Restaurant Menu will also be available in our restaurant along with our Children’s Menu. The key thing now is improvements for patients – Norman Lamb

The East of England Ambulance Trust is to bring in more full-time ambulances to provide extra cover for towns and villages including Cromer and Potter Heigham.

Commenting on the news, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “I welcome this news, which is a sign that the Trust is taking these issues seriously. I have persistently highlighted the problem of unacceptably slow response times, taking up concerns from the public and from ambulance staff themselves. The key thing now is that these steps bring improvements in the service for patients. I pay tribute to local paramedics who have consistently raised important concerns. They deserve our thanks.”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Now that most people who require neutering vouchers contact us on the “neutering line” most of the calls which Stephanie receives are for people looking for a new cat to join their family or for cats to come into care. However, a high proportion of the calls relating to cats to come in relate to “strays” and I use this term loosely as so very often the cat concerned has a home not too many doors away from the caller. Stephanie was recently contacted by someone who had been feeding a stray for several weeks and was assured that neighbours had been contacted to check it had not got a home in the area. When a space became available Josh came into care and fortunately for him his fosterer checked to see if he had been micro-chipped (this is normal procedure with all strays that come into care). A few phone calls later we were able to reunite Josh with his family, who lived just a few doors away from the person who had handed him into care. Unfortunately they had misguidedly started to feed him when he was passing through their garden. They have now been advised not to encourage Josh to stray from his home by offering him food. We do now micro-chip all our cats. Kittens may also be chipped depending on their age, or can have this done when they go for their second vaccination. Those already chipped when they come into care are registered to their new owners when they leave for their new homes. This gives them a better chance of being reunited with their family should they go missing. If you have not had your cat chipped please consider doing so.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

A Choral Feast at St Peter’s Sheringham

On Saturday 16 March at 7.30pm St Peter’s Church Sheringham will welcome Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society directed by Nathan Waring for their Spring Concert.

The choir, which this year celebrates its 80th Anniversary, will perform Karl Jenkins Requiem which was composed by the Welsh musical wizard just a few years ago. Jenkins is now reputed to be the most performed living British composer.

Alongside this will be a performance of Five Mystical Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams written some 100 years earlier. Ralph Vaughan Williams is arguably the greatest composer Britain has seen since the days of Henry Purcell. He composed music notable for its power, nobility and expressiveness representing, perhaps, the essence of ‘Englishness’. Five Mystical Songs is a setting of four poems by George Herbert, from his 1633 collection The Temple: Sacred Poems. The baritone soloist will be Jamie Wright, a choral scholar at York Minster.

The concert will also include a short organ recital by Lawrence Tao, organist at Gresham’s School. He will play Bach’s Trio, Prelude and Fugue in C Major BWV 545.

Tickets £10 (£12 on the door) from Sheringham Little Theatre Box Office (01263 822347) and K Hardware, Cromer. Under 18s go free. For further details visit www.sheringhamandcromerchoral.co.uk

New Am Dram Group Raises Funds for Local Charities

Ev Boothby is a local award winning magician and children’s entertainer and works in the county at all kinds of different events. But Ev has recently undertaken a new project.

Late last year he set a new amateur dramatics group. The group plan to put on shows ranging from musicals to pantomimes and will be raising money for different local charities.

This year the group are supporting the Ryan Wright Appeal. Ryan is a young local boy who is suffering from a form of child cancer called Neuroblastoma.

The group aims to raise as much money as they can with their next project, a Variety Show, showcasing some of the raw talent Norfolk hides. They are looking for new members to join the group and get on board with the shows they are planning. You don't have to be amazingly talented or have qualifications in drama, just the passion to help change lives whilst having fun.

The group now meets on Wednesday evenings at 7pm at the Charis Centre in North Walsham. You can sign up to the group and get more info by visiting www.mister-e-magic.co.uk and clicking Drama Group.

Dear Grumpy Old Man

As a self confessed inveterate pedant when it comes to abuse/ misuse of our English language, I wholeheartedly share your irritation. ‘Reverse backwards’, ‘serious crisis’,’ restarted again’, ‘future ahead’ – for me this is akin to the scratching of fingernails down a blackboard – sorry, chalkboard. Then there’s what I call lazy English. The snooker commentator who says ‘he’s hit it perfect’ and ‘he did that previous’ - is it really too much to put ‘–ly’ on the end in each case? Equally irritating are the ‘in’ words and expressions – ‘basically’ and ‘at the end of the day’ are now well-established. More recently we don’t seem to have problems any more but we have issues instead (a problem is not an issue and an issue is not a problem!) ‘How do you solve an issue like Maria?’ No, I don’t think so! ‘To be frank’, ‘to be truthful’ and ‘to be honest’ have all been replaced with ‘to be fair’ even when it is inappropriate. When asking how someone is, the response is now usually ‘I’m good’ – no, I am asking about your health and well being not your behaviour or morals! Then there’s MP speak – their ‘in’ word seems to be ‘clear’ for example ‘I want to make it absolutely clear’ or ‘I couldn’t be more clear’. Returning to sports commentary, it seems that some commentators are incapable of communicating to their listeners anything of any substance or meaning. For example, during the recent world bowls tournament one player/commentator said ‘The fewer bad bowls that you play means that you have a greater chance of winning’ and one football manager commented ‘If we had scored, it would have been a different result’. If you have nothing to say then for pity’s sake say nothing. Then there’s the pseudo Afro Caribbean/West Indian/cockney accent where every sentence is punctuated with ‘like’, ‘innit’ (even when it doesn’t follow a question) and ‘know what I mean?’ So basically, at the end of the day and to be fair, I want like to make it absolutely clear that this is the end of my rant as my wife, who is slightly pregnant and is expecting a pair of twins, needs me to help innit as she has an issue with the washing machine, know what I mean? North Walsham Table Tennis Close Cup Contests

At Gresham School the team of Hubert Cheng (F), Ian Darricott (F) and Henry Yung (J) hosted NWSCE’s Stan Baldock (O), Brenda Baldock (O) and Tom Wardle (R) in the first round of the Handicap Singles Cup with the handicaps giving NWSCE starts ranging between 10-14. After six battles, the teams were locked at 3-3 when Darricott took on Wardle. Both players had won both their earlier battles, but here Darricott defeated Wardle (+14) 21-17, 21-17. Stan Baldock (+10) then had a tight 21-20, 14-21, 21-17 win over Yung which meant a deciding contest between Cheng and Brenda Baldock (+13). Despite some good blocking from the latter, Cheng won 21-19, 21-18 to see the School to a 5-4 win.

No more than two points and a single letter separated Special’s Ray Howe (B), Martin Lawes (C) and Jonathan Care (C) and NWSCA’s John Batchford, Andy Beane and Tom Baldock-Yaxley (all B) at Gimingham. After Howe won the opener against Batchford in straight and Beane beat Lawes in three, the

attack of NWSCA saw no more sets dropped in their 5-1 win. At North Walsham NWSCD’s Mary Sawyer (G), Joe Kirkup (I) and Philip Stone (F) hosted Goblin’s Hugh Rout (H), Peter Ward (F) and Dave Johns (F) with Stone winning the opener in straight against Rout (+4). Ward squandered four set points against Kirkup (+6) but won the golden point and then the second set. John’s serve helped him get past Sawyer (+2) in three. Kirkup’s (+2) attack dominated Rout as he led 8-1. Rout’s defence threatened a comeback but twice when he could have drawn level – at 13-14 and 17-18 he served off. Kirkup took the set 21-17 and won a second featuring exhibition like rallies with a return winner 21-12. Stone (+0) beat Johns from a set down and vintage play from Sawyer (+2) beat Ward 21-20, 21-13. Johns levelled at 8-8 in the first against Kirkup (+6) but the NWSCD player hung on for a 21-20, 21-9 win to conclude his team’s 5-2 win. Chris Johnson (K), James Morter (M) and Edna Stone (L). In a curious coincidence Price saved four match points to beat Stone (+10) 21-20 in the third after being 16-20 down, but then lost from the same position – 20-16 in the third up – to Johnson (+8). NWSCB won 5-2.

The first round of the doubles has also taken place. NWSCD led Sharks 2-0 before losing out in another deciding match 5-4, but better news for NWSCE whose 5-4 win against Backhanders included one dead rubber. NWSCC won a derby 5-1 against NWSCA, but NWSCB lost 6-0 to Barracudas.
