Issue 418 16th March 2013
PLAYERS’ SUCCESS CONTINUES! I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who came and supported the North Walsham Players’ pantomime ‘Dick Whittington’ at North Walsham Community Centre on Friday 22 and Sunday 24 February.
The panto was raising money for this year’s chosen charity, Guide Dogs For The Blind, and after all expenditure had been paid we were able to add £150 to our year’s total for the charity.
The Players worked hard right from the start, to make it one of their best shows yet with plenty of audience participation. The musical panto featured excellent costumes, beautifully painted scenery and special effects which made for a great looking production. The cast consisted of around 20 people.
I’m glad to say that everybody involved with the show thoroughly enjoyed themselves and would like to thank everybody for attending both performances and look forward to seeing them at future shows.
I would like to say a special thank you to everybody involved in making the show the success it was, including the cast, also the technical crew, backstage and front of house staff. Lastly I would like to say a special thank you to Carl Bird Ltd for help and support and also the following
01692 402019
local businesses for kindly sponsoring the show - Paradise Fun Casino, Andrea’s Photography & Burch’s Pest Control.
New faces are welcome aged 7+, whether you wish to dance, act, sing or just help backstage etc. If you would like to take part and raise money for local charities then why not join. There is no charge for joining and there are no costly subscriptions to pay. Anybody interested in joining should contact Colin on 01692 402116

Roasted confit of Norfolk Gressingham Hoi Sin Duck from head chef at The Grove - Gary Parrett
1 carrot (diced) 1 leek (diced) 1 stick celery (sliced) 1 litre vegetable oil 20g Chinese five spice 20g-35g Jubberwacky plum sauce
We have a great Easter coming up at the Grove, with a Good Friday Fish Night, the Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday (perfect for kids) and a superb selection of best Icarus Hines’ roasts for Sunday lunch – phone to book on 01263512412.
This is a lovely starter that’s extremely popular whenever it’s on, and will certainly be featuring throughout the Easter period. When it first appeared the manager made a small mistake on the menu, and word spread that The Grove was serving the most delicious hoi-sin Guck (much to the amusement of both our diners and our front-of-house staff). However, this Gressingham duck is the best around and I love cooking with it.
(available at Cromer Farm and Health Shop)

Method: Take both duck legs and trim around the top of the leg joint to remove the tendons. This will ensure the duck stays nice and tender thoroughout the cooking process. Removing the tendon makes it less likely for the leg to contract throughout the cooking process, keeping it nice and tender. six hours on a low heat - confiting the duck in the process. The oil will be very hot so remove the duck with a pair of tongs and drain the excess oil in a colander or cooling rack. Once the duck has cooled a little (but not all the way) strip, discard any fat and shred. Put the duck on a roasting tray and sprinkle the Chinese five spices over. Roast until the duck is crispy, and while still warm add the delicious Jubberwacky plum sauce.
This can be served with your spring onion and cucumber as a salad, or you could even make some pancakes to go with it.
The best thing about this dish is you now have the remaining oil and duck fat for roasting your potatoes for your Easter Sunday lunch (if you haven’t booked to have it with us!)

Power to the People! The Big Switch & Save - cheaper energy bills supplied by people power
North Norfolk residents could save money on their energy bills thanks to a new scheme being introduced by the district council.
A website (www.bigswitchandsave.co.uk) has been set up where residents can submit their details to be included in a ‘reverse auction’ to find the cheapest energy tariff for those householders. By grouping hundreds or even thousands of households together, it is possible to negotiate much lower energy tariffs than if an individual was changing supplier on their own. Schemes elsewhere in the country have seen residents save an average of £171 per year on their bills!
The scheme opened on 1 March, and then after the scheme closes for online applications on 8 April, energy suppliers compete in the auction to make the best offer to those customers who applied. The best deal is then offered back to those who signed up, who will then see how much they could save compared to their existing tariff, and be able to make a decision on whether to change to the new tariff. If the householder opts to change to the new tariff, the switch of supplier will be carried out automatically.
The more households who join, the stronger the bargaining power to drive down individual energy bills, and so NNDC has teamed up with five other Norfolk councils under the banner of ‘The Norfolk Big Switch and Save’. You can help by spreading the word among your friends and family, but it is also possible to register up to five households on the same email address, which means neighbours and family members could help each other sign up too.
If you want to benefit from the scheme sign-up online before 8 April via www.bigswitchandsave.co.uk
Registering is quick and easy - all you need is a recent energy bill (one year’s worth of bills for best results). For residents with no access to the internet, it is possible to apply over the phone or arrange an appointment at the council offices to get help to register, up to the end of March. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
We recently had to have three cats put to sleep because they had FIP, a fatal disease which is caused by the feline corona virus. Infection with corona virus is very common in cats but generally does not cause any problems, other than mild self-limiting diarrhoea. It is only when the virus changes (which does not happen often) that it mutates and causes FIP. The corona virus itself is common, and experts believe that between 25 to 40 per cent of household pets are infected. The virus is shed in faeces and cats become infected when grooming or eating. Although a cat may be infected with the virus it does not mean it will mutate and that the cat will develop FIP; in fact the number that do is very small. The reason why this happens is not clear and there are several factors which could be involved
This is the first time we have had any experience of FIP and it was heartbreaking to lose them. Two were young cats, littermates, which had joined us from a feral colony. One other kitten from the litter is still in our care and will stay with us until we have the all clear to re-home him. Although there is no blood test which can indicate whether or not a cat has FIP we can check for the corona virus. Another kitten from the same litter found a home before these three came into care and his owner was informed. She decided to have him blood tested to see if he had the virus and his blood tests came back negative. The other cat in care which had FIP was much older and came to us from a multi cat household. Fortunately the other cats which came in with him are both fit and well.

Why worm our pets?
Spring is fast approaching, the daffodils will soon be flowering, the grass will need cutting and the WORM EGGS will be hatching! Yes, the WORM EGGS! The large amount of dog mess seen on the streets of our towns over the winter months will start becoming a real health issue as the weather warms up. One dog can pass as many as 15,000 eggs per gram of faeces, that’s a lot of eggs going by the amount of faeces on the streets. The council will issue on the spot fines of £80 to anyone caught leaving dog mess in a ‘scoop the poop’ designated area, with court action if the fine is unpaid. Heavy worm burdens may cause anaemia, diarrhoea, vomiting and malnutrition. There is also significant risk to human health when dealing with Toxocara Canis (dog Round Worm) as this worm may be transferred to humans by poor hygiene after contact with your pet, especially if your dog likes to lick your face and hands. Worm eggs in the environment may survive for many years, when in the larval form they are infectious to animals and humans. The British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) recommends a MINIMUM worming frequency of at least every 3 months for dogs and cats or monthly treatments in higher risk situations (i.e. if your pet scavenges/hunts or is in close contact with children). Regular worming of your pet is a fundamental part of responsible pet ownership as well as picking up after your dog in public places. With our March promotion at Miramar Vets, we are trying to encourage the dog and cat owners of North Norfolk to worm their pets by offering 15% off worming tablets throughout the month. Pets need to be registered with the surgery and an accurate body weight must be recorded on their record card. New clients will need an appointment with the nurse before treatment can be dispensed. You will receive a reminder through the post when your next treatment is due. We also have some poo bags and dispensers to give away to encourage owners to pick up after their pets for a cleaner, healthier town. There is limited stock so hurry along to the practice for your freebie.

the Baptist church and lessons read by members of the resident congregation and from the other four churches in the Benefice. This special service continues a tradition at St John's that has been going for at least ten years. The Cross of Christ, a Devotion for Congregation and Choir, was written way back in 1956, and has been popular ever since. The pattern of hymns, lessons and anthems leads us through the momentous events leading up to Christ's crucifixion - a fitting preparation for Holy Week and Easter. School Admissions – Parental choice or Hobson’s choice? By Wanda Szczygiel, Solicitor with Hayes + Storr It’s that time of year where many parents are waiting to hear whether or not their child has been offered a place in the school of their choice. Every parent (or guardian) is entitled to express a preference for any school where they would like their children to be educated. Despite the promise of parental choice, many families fail to be offered the place of choice for their child. All schools have admissions criteria to decide which children can be allocated places.
Admissions criteria vary between schools. For example, schools may give priority to children:
• • • •
who have a brother or sister at the school already who live close to the school from a particular religion (for faith schools) who do well in an entrance exam (for selective schools eg grammar schools or stage schools) • who went to a particular primary school (a ‘feeder school’) • in care or being looked after (all schools must have this as a top priority)
If you've been refused a place at the school of your choice, then you're entitled to a school appeal before an Independent Appeal Panel. The admissions authority has to provide you with reasons why they have not offered your child a place and also why to do so at an appeal would prejudice efficient education at the school.
Places for children in Years 3 to 11 at school are classed as a 'normal prejudice appeal'. In these cases the Independent Appeal Panel makes its decisions based on the facts and merits of each case. The panel has to consider three things:
If your child has been refused a place and you wish to discuss the prospect of lodging an appeal or any other issue relating to your child’s education, including special needs, disability discrimination, exclusions or suspensions, then please contact Wanda Szczygiel at Hayes + Storr on 01328 863231 or by email: wanda.szczygiel@hayes-storr.com

1. Have the admission arrangements been properly implemented? The admission authority's decision to refuse you a place should have been consistent with those arrangements. If the panel decides that the arrangements were not properly implemented and your child should have been offered a place, the appeal will be successful.
2. Will the admission cause problems for the school? If the panel decides that the admission authority properly implemented the school admission arrangements, it will then go on to consider if admitting your child will, or will not, cause problems for the school. If the panel decides it won't, then the school appeal will be allowed.
3. What are you child's needs versus the needs of the school? If the panel decides that the school cannot admit another pupil without causing problems, it will then balance the needs of your child against the needs of the school. If your child's needs outweigh the school's needs, then the appeal will be allowed. If not, it will fail.
48
For reception or Years 1 and 2 applications, then your school appeal will be dealt with as a 'class size appeal'. These type of appeals are covered by legislation which limits class sizes to 30, unless there is more than one school teacher present. In these appeals there are only two grounds on which school appeals can be successful:
1. The admission authority made a mistake and which resulted in your place being denied. 2. The decision was unreasonable, based on the information available at the time.
If for some reason it is not a class size appeal then it will be dealt with as a normal appeal.
The various different types of schools may have different criteria which can be challenged, for example entrance exams. They can also be challenged on the basis of discrimination, if this has been a factor.
As each case is decided on the facts and merits, it is imperative that your case is presented as fully as possible. North Walsham Times 418 March 16th 2013

Starter for 10!
Millfield Primary School in North Walsham was ecstatic to receive the news that their Quiz team did exceptionally well at a regional heat on Tuesday 4 February. Ms Lanchbury, a year six teacher and mentor for the team, praised their gallant efforts in her review of the day saying ‘Congratulations to the Millfield Quiz team who took part in the regional heat at Fakenham Junior School. The team - Caitlin Pain, Jasmin Oates, Dylan Rayner and Elias Greene worked very well together to answer questions on a host of subjects including history, science, geography, music and general knowledge. There were a few nail-biting moments when tactical answering was needed but the children kept calm and carried on. From early on in the quiz they took second place and we are delighted to tell you that they finished second at the end of the final round! Well done everyone!”

Aylsham's Festival of Quizzes
Two great Aylsham events have joined together to present a "Festival of Quizzes". The pair of quiz nights, one in April, the other in May, are being staged by Aylsham Wide Sky Festival and Aylsham Food Festival respectively, each having its own distinctive format but offering a discount on ticket prices if you go to both!
Aylsham Town Hall is the venue for both quizzes with the first on Saturday 6 April. Questions for this will centre around the Aylsham Festival's 2013 theme of 'Paths & Patterns'. Tables will be for up to six people and tickets are just £7 per person, which includes a Ploughman's Supper.
Regular Aylsham and district quizzers will be familiar with the Food Festival's annual event where the quizmaster comes up with a hundred or so questions all linked in some way, no matter how tenuous, with food and drink. This year the Foodie quiz will be on Saturday 11 May, again in the Town Hall with tables for up to six and the ticket price is also £7, this time to include a 'Savoury Pie Platter' for all contestants. In addition to the food on offer at both quizzes, there will be a licensed bar with a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks.
Dedicated quizzers - or those just wanting a couple of sociable fun evenings - will no doubt want to take advantage of the Festival of Quizzes special offer: if you buy tickets for both events at the same time, the normal cost of £14 will be cut to just £12 - a saving of £2! Tickets for the two quizzes are available from Salad Days fruit and veg stall in the Market Place on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday mornings or log on to the Aylsham Wide Sky Festival website at www.aylshamfestival.co.uk
Aylsham Wide Sky Festival runs this year from Thursday 23 May to Tuesday 28 May while Aylsham Food Festival, organised by Slow Food Aylsham, will be from Friday 4 October to Sunday 6 October. There are more details on the Aylsham Festival website, above, and at www.slowfoodaylsham.org.uk

Essubi Trust was set up to raise money to care for the hundreds of orphans whose parents have died from the AIDS epidemic. The charity is particularly interesting to us because our money goes directly to help students the same age as ours to pay for their education, and also pay for equipment to train them in craft skills so that they have a means for their education and in the future supporting their families.
The Btec Art students made jewellery, printed t-shirts and made cakes which they sold to staff, governors and students throughout the college. North Walsham Times 418 March 16th 2013

NORTH WALSHAM & BRADFIELD FLOWER CLUB Despite the snow and ice on 24 January, we had a fantastic turnout of members for our first demonstration of 2013 and after enjoying Irene's home baking and a cup of tea, they were rewarded with a lovely demonstration (Take an Old Bag Shopping) from Adele Kent.
On 28 February, around 60 members attended the short AGM followed by a leisurely lunch at the Beechwood Hotel. The current committee members will remain for a further year with the exception of Mary VanPoortvliet who is standing down after several years - Mary was presented with a card and gift token. Patricia Hawkes was voted and seconded as a new Committee Member.
If you are thinking of joining us, then do come along to our next meeting on 28 March. This meeting will mark the beginning of our 'flower club year' which is also our Emerald Jubilee (how time has flown since our Golden Celebrations!) We have put together a programme to include our favourite demonstrators and one or two brand new ones too. Plans are being made for another
The Atrium
Flower Festival in St Nicholas Church over four days in June and, of course, we will be having a "garden meeting" and an outing - and that's just in the first few months!
If you want to join the Club in March, the subscription for the year is £20. Visitor fee is £4 per meeting.
On 28 March at 2.30pm, we will be welcoming Jean Crane from Snettisham. Jean has been a National Demonstrator for many years and combines her talent for demonstrating with a great sense of humour.
Before the demonstration, a cheque will be presented to a representative of the East Anglian Air Ambulance.
There is plenty of free parking at the Catholic Church Hall in North Walsham so come along early to enjoy refreshments and a bit of floral retail therapy! Then on 25 April at the Community Centre Alan Gray from East Ruston Old Vicarage Gardens will be demonstrating "Spring into Summer".
For members, this is a normal meeting, but if you are a visitor you will need to reserve your ticket which at £8 includes refreshments before the demonstration begins at 2pm. There is a pay and display car park adjacent or alternatively leave yourself a bit of time to park & walk.
Please contact me Glenis Dillon on 01692 404628, or Sue Bloomfield on 01692 500440 to secure your Alan Gray ticket or if you would like more details about the club activities.
North Walsham self-taught artist Rod Dyble has his first solo exhibition running at The Atrium until Tuesday 2 April. As well as Norfolk wildlife scenes Rod draws on the time he lived in Spain for some of his paintings which capture vivid colours and movement.
The Atrium gallery is open, for free, from 10am-5pm, Mon-Fri, and 9am-1pm Saturdays.
The big family movie attraction at the Atrium this month is the CGI animation The Lorax (U) based on the grumpy but much-loved Dr Seuss character.
It is showing on Sat 23 March at 11am and Wed 27 March at 7pm. All seats are just £3.
The screening of The Life of Pi, planned for April, has had to be postponed until later in the summer. The Atrium will be showing instead the “mature comedy romance” Hope Springs (12A). It stars Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones as a middle-aged couple who, after 30 years of marriage, attend an intense, week-long counselling session to work on their relationship. Hope Springs will be showing on Wed 10 April at 7pm and on Fri 12 with afternoon tea (included in the £5 ticket price) at 2.30pm and the film at 3.30pm.
Bookings for the Atrium, on Spenser Avenue, North Walsham, can be made on theatrium.org.uk, on 01692 400080 or in person. Follow the Atrium on Facebook and Twitter.

The BIG Switch and Save - cheaper energy bills supplied by people power! people cut their energy costs in these difficult North Norfolk residents could save money on their energy bills thanks to a new scheme being introduced by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC).
The scheme opened on 1 March and then after the scheme closes for online applications on 8 April, energy suppliers compete in the auction to make the best offer to those customers who applied. This deal is then offered back to those who signed up, who will then see how much they could save compared to their existing tariff, and be able to make a decision on whether to change to the new tariff. If the householder opts to change to the new tariff, the switch of supplier will be carried out automatically.
The more households who join, the stronger the bargaining power to drive down individual
energy bills, and so NNDC has teamed up with other Norfolk councils under the banner of ‘The Big Switch and Save’. People can help by spreading the word among friends and family, but it is also possible to register up to five households on the same email address, which means neighbours and family members could help each other sign up too.
Anyone who wants to benefit from the scheme can sign-up today via
www.bigswitchandsave.co.uk.
Registering is quick and easy - all that is needed is a recent energy bill (one year’s worth of bills for best results), and a helpline is available on 0800 0488285. For residents with no access to the internet, it is possible to apply over the phone or arrange an appointment at the council offices to get help to register. Call 01263 516044 for more details. Applications can be made until the end of March 2013 (online applications until 8 April).
times.”
Both projects have been made possible thanks to NNDC’s successful bid for funding from the Department of Energy and Climate Change’s ‘Cheaper Energy Together’ fund.

NNDC Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, John Lee, said, “We all know that energy costs are soaring and energy switching is one way individual households can reduce those costs. Norman Lamb MP visits British Heart Foundation shop in Sheringham
Norman Lamb, Member of Parliament for North Norfolk, visited the British Heart Foundation store in Sheringham at the beginning of this month to find out more about the BHF’s No Smoking Day campaign. Speaking afterwards, Mr Lamb commented “Smokers are almost twice as likely to have a heart attack compared with people who have never smoked. The work of organisations like the BHF in helping people to stop smoking is incredibly important - I know myself how difficult it can be to quit.
Nearly a third (29%) of smokers surveyed admitted their children or family hates them smoking and a quarter enjoy smoking less now-adays because they feel more guilty about it. Proving loved ones can often come a poor second to cigarettes, almost one in five (19%) of smokers confessed they could buy more for their family if they were to quit smoking, according to figures released by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) to mark the launch of
the 30th annual No Smoking Day campaign.
The data showed money matters often prick the conscience of smokers; as just over a third (34%) said they feel guilty about the amount they spend on cigarettes and a similar number (28%) stated they avoid thinking about it.
Not only were smokers keen to dodge calculations on cost but self-deception was also evident, as one in five (18%) acknowledged they probably underestimate how much they spend on cigarettes.
Out of the 2,000 smokers questioned, a quarter (25%) surprisingly reported that money is actually a bigger motivator to quit smoking than the effects on their long-term health.
The BHF is using this insight for its No Smoking Day campaign this year by encouraging smokers to ‘swap fags for swag’ and think about the financial incentives of quitting. An average smoker, based on 20 a day, can save ÂŁ7 a day, ÂŁ49 a week, ÂŁ210 a month and ÂŁ2,555 a year if they quit.
Council responds to criticism from Tax Payers’ Alliance
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has responded to criticism from the Tax Payers’ Alliance over the pay of senior staff, saying the Alliance needs to talk about the situation as it actually is today rather than using old, out of date figures.
In a report looking at all local authorities across the country, the Tax Payers’ Alliance pointed out that NNDC was one of 118 local authorities that increased the number of senior staff being paid over £50,000 between the financial years 2010/11 and 2011/12, with overall staffing costs increasing as a result.
NNDC Cabinet Member for Finance, Wyndham Northam, said in response, “The Tax Payers’ Alliance should really be looking at more recent figures. The situation they describe is completely out of date. The Council undertook a radical restructure of its senior staff a year ago, over the winter of 2011/12, reducing the Corporate Leadership Team from five to three and the number of Senior Managers from 13 to seven. This has not only helped to improve efficiency, which was the primary aim, but has also reduced staffing costs by ÂŁ231k.
“As a council we are determined to provide excellent value for all our residents, including tax payers. Over the past two years we have managed to cut costs by over ÂŁ1m without making any significant reductions in the services we provide for our communities and without raising Council Tax.â€?

Liberal Democrat councillors argued that with ÂŁ25 million under investment last year the Council could well afford to unlock some of its capital, lending money to a local housing association in order to build more affordable homes for the residents of the District. So far this year the Conservative run Council has built only 16 affordable homes.
North Walsham councillor, Eric Seward said "People have a right to secure and decent housing. Even in this difficult financial climate the fall in the number of affordable homes built in the District is deplorable."
Councillor Virginia Gay said that enquiries to the Housing Minister, Mark Prisk, have confirmed that loans of this kind are permissible. Councillor Gay commented "Local authorities can lend to housing associations for building. Our proposal has the potential to create more affordable homes while at the same time bringing a financial return to support the Council's services".
In keeping with their opposition to last year's increases in car parking charges across the District, Liberal Democrats also called for a comprehensive review of the District's car parking provision and charges.
Brian Hannah, Liberal Democrat councillor for Sheringham North, said "I am backing the Sheringham Chamber of Trade's campaign for better parking arrangements. It's time the District took a long look at its parking policy and charging structure."
Liberal Democrat councillors also caled for the scrapping of a proposal to grant ÂŁ105,000 in the next three years to a new Destination Management Organisation for Tourism.

Dr Mike Knapton, Associate Medical Director at the BHF, said “These figures reveal the emotional burden smokers endure by feeling guilty about the impact their addiction has on family life and their finances. Fortunately, if you smoke and want to stop, we’re here to help. “More than 750,000 smokers will have attempted to quit on No Smoking Day on Wednesday 13 March so why not get ready to join in and reward yourself and your family with the money you save when you ‘swap fags for swag’.

NW Town F.C. MATCH REPORTS North Walsham Town 0 Spixworth 2
The Angels showed five changes to their starting line-up from the side that faced Loddon, for their game against high-flying Spixworth. New signings Jake Sharpe and Richard Neave took their places in goal and defence respectively, while Dan Reynolds, Jay Robertson and Daniel Broom were welcomed back after unavailability and injury.
Straight from the kick-off Spixworth showed their intent by pressing forward and won a soft free-kick five yards from the penalty area in front of the goal. The resultant free-kick however was blasted high over the crossbar.
Determined not to be overawed by their higher

placed opponents, Walsham created a couple of half chances themselves with efforts from Crosby hitting the side netting and Gauntlett’s shot just wide of the target.
On 23 minutes there were loud appeals for a penalty from the Spixworth players but the referee ignored their claims.
After half an hour Spixworth should have taken the lead when a free-kick found an unmarked forward, who hooked his shot wide of the target from five yards with the goal at his mercy. Despite the visitors dominance in the air against the smaller Walsham forwards, the pacy front line were causing problems, only to be caught out by being flagged offside on many occasions.
The deadlock was finally broken after 41 minutes. A through ball found the Spixworth front man whose initial shot was well saved by the home keeper but the rebound was hammered into the goal. Walsham almost
equalised on the stroke of half-time.
Whilst Spixworth continued to a possession and territorial advantage in the second half, Walsham looked dangerous with quick breakaways and Broom tested the away keeper after 50 minutes, having a cross cut out before a Walsham forward could pounce. The visitors should have increased their lead on the hour mark.
As the game reached midway through the second half, the visitors appeared to become frustrated at not being able to put the game out of reach of their lower placed opponents and Walsham seemed to grow in confidence.
A superb last-ditch tackle by Gorbould saved a certain goal on 70 minutes.
The final five minutes saw Walsham push forward in search of a deserved equaliser, but this was all in vain as a quick breakaway in the 89th minute saw Spixworth double their lead to give them a 2-0 victory.

Our speaker for the February meeting was Mrs Elizabeth Scott whose title was ‘Living History of Blickling Hall’.
Liz, Bunty and the butler took us through the history of Blickling combining factual information, scandal and much humour, all supported with slides. The sketch routine was enjoyed by us all and Joan Etherington gave the vote of thanks.
The darts and tenpin bowling teams continue to meet and both would welcome new members. The craft group are currently planning their competition entry for the group meeting which will be held on 19 March at 7.15pm at North Walsham Community Centre.

Grumpy Old Man - Medical Affairs
I have had occasion to visit both the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital and the new Cromer Hospital variously in recent times. What a contrast they represent.
The car park at Cromer is always unexpectedly empty perhaps because you have to buy three hours time for two quid, even if you are only nipping in for an x-ray or a blood sample, so the road outside is cluttered with vehicles.
Arrive at Norwich Hospital and it is like trying to park near the football ground on match day.
Our enormous county hospital is overwhelmed with unremitting demand day and night whereas Cromer Hospital is in reality a part time very posh clinic dealing in the main with blood sampling and x-rays, and takes no strain off the Norfolk & Norwich.
Still, there it is, newly built and very imposing, but A&E and hospital beds are still 30 miles

unbelievably, been asked to make late returns so as not to show the other laggards up.
What amazed me most having arrived at A&E was that our ambulance crew were idle for an hour before being freed only after booking in their patient. As I recall there were six ambulances crews queuing up at the same time, all kicking their heels. If the system allowed them to hand over on arrival to a third party to deal with the waiting time they could load on a new trolley and get back on standby. Too simple, I suppose.
The same principle applies here as GP surgeries no longer take blood samples, but issue an instruction for patients to trail off to Cromer Hospital instead, which gives the place work, but wastes time and makes much inconvenience for patients.
Trying to change the NHS is difficult and inefficiency is perpetuated because of apathy. My daughter, 25 years with the NHS, highly qualified and experienced, is wasting her skills now, forced to deputise for a department head who has been on leave for over three years (not in Norfolk). She regularly gets her reports and forms completed on time, but as all the other departments are less efficient, she has,
Will it change? Don’t bet on it …

Laser Facelift at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic More and more patients with busy lives are looking for less invasive treatments with less downtime to improve their profile and tightness of their face and neck. The laser assisted face and neck lift is an exciting, effective, and safe option for patients who wish to tighten the skin and underlying tissues of their face and neck. For good candidates, liquefying a small amount of fat to smooth the contours and heating the underlying tissues to tighten the skin may be the answer they are looking for.
We like it best as it avoids a tell-tale skin incision or scar in front of the ear. Any surgical procedure can cause a scar so we try and avoid this risk by not cutting the skin.
Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCAAM, Medical Director and Laser Surgeon at the Coltishall Clinic explains- “We use the newest generation of laser-assisted lipolysis [fatdestroying] and skin tightening devices. This is a third generation laser using wavelengths that allows the melting of fat and the heating of soft tissue to stimulate collagen formation to tighten the overlying skin. When used on the face, it is called a Laser Facelift.”
When to Choose the Laser Assisted Facelift Treatment Laser assisted facelifting is great for men or women. A good candidate for this procedure is: • in good general health • not smoking • has localised areas of fat in the jowl area and under the chin • has good skin integrity.
Skin tightening alone can be accomplished on
28
underweight patients. Dr Gheyi will examine your face and neck to determine if you are a good candidate. A laser facelift is safer than and more economical than a traditional full face or neck lift.
How does the Laser Facelift Work? Dilute solution of a local anaesthetic is used to numb the areas treated on the face and neck. This can be done with minimal discomfort. You can be listening to your favourite music while this is being done.
Once the area is numbed, three or four tiny 1mm openings are made, one behind each earlobe, and one or two under the chin. Small hollow metallic tubes called cannulas are passed through the fatty layer under the skin to make tunnels.
Then, a tiny 0.6 mm laser fibre is passed through fat between the skin and the muscles. The laser energy heats the surrounding tissue. This stimulates collagen formation and assists in skin and tissue tightening. The amount of tightening greatly depends on skin type, age, elasticity, general health and other factors.
Lastly, a small amount of fat, the amount varies from patient to patient, is suctioned away when needed.
Recovery and Results Typically, only one treatment is required to obtain optimal results. Initial results can be seen within one week, with continued improvement over the next three to four
months as tissues continue to tighten and heal. Some patients may benefit from a limited incision or mini-lift at the same time if they have significant sagging in the jowl area. This can also be combined with a thread lift for additional tightening.
After the Laser Facelift, your face will be wrapped in a gauze compression dressing. The next day, you will be fitted into a facial compression garment. Under most circumstances, compression will be required for three to four days followed by nightly use only. Compression helps to push out swelling, decrease scar tissue formation, and promote smoothness of the treated tissues.
Laser facial sculpting is less invasive and less traumatic to tissues than a traditional facelift. Therefore, there is less downtime for recovery. Most patients are able to resume work in two to five days and return to all usual activity, including vigorous exercise, within two weeks. Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort in the initial post-operative period with gradual resolution of discomfort in the following days to weeks. Snugness of the skin may be experienced for a matter of months.
Coltishall Clinic offers a full range of Cosmetic Medical and Surgical Laser procedures. We offer a range a solutions including non-surgical face and neck lifts, liquid facelifts, thread lifts and now the innovative laser facelift.
To find out more information or to watch a treatment video log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call us on 0800 0430737 to book your consultation.

Dear Margaret
I read with great interest your ‘Grumpy Old Man article concerning "chairs for the men" in shops.
As an oldie who has suffered from painful, arthritic knees over the past 10 years (my second full knee replacement took place 2 weeks ago ) I am always looking for a seat when I am out shopping with my wife, unless I manage to find an electric buggy in a Supermarket.
Sainsburys in North Walsham scores well in both respects. They have several chairs and at least one electric buggy behind the checkouts.
In contrast, when I contacted the new Waitrose in North Walsham on last month about the provision of electric buggies so I could visit their store for the first time, imagine my surprise when I was told that they ‘don't have any... due to space and safety issues’.
This, from a store that claims, when you call them that customer satisfaction is their priority (or words to that effect). They surely had plenty of opportunities to plan this when they took over the Focus store. Best regards Roger, North Walsham
Dear Margaret
Did you know (I didn't) that 4 Market Place in North Walsham was listed as a building of historical or architectural interest? It makes you wonder what the authorities have been doing all this time to allow such a building to rot.
Obviously it's too late now with the building in such a state that it has been removed from listed status and will be completelydemolished to make way for a new development. Initially I welcomed this but having seen the plans I was rather shaken to find that the building that is replacing the toilet block is four stories high and way above the ridgeline of neighbouring properties. As you approach the market from Cromer Road and Market Street the view of the church tower will be obliterated by this new development. The view of the church was not present in the photographs presented with the planning application.
As a town councillor I raised these objections regarding the height at our planning meeting; having lost the vote I have to accept collective responsibility for the decision to approve the plans. Town and Parish councils are only consultees on planning and I would urge anyone who has similar concerns as me to take the time to take a look at the plans and write to the District Council before it's too late. Yours sincerely David Spencer North Walsham

In the second division, NWSCC’s Toby Usher, Chris Johnson and Phil Mole took on Barracuda’s Mike Toye, Ray Amo and Chris Gould. The first battles saw two recoveries by NWSCC from two sets down as Usher and Johnson beat Toye and Amo respectively.
Gould lost the first set to Mole 11-3, but then worked his attack to win in four. Johnson came back from two sets down for the second time, but this time lost the decider as Toye hit hard to take the fifth. A battle of very fast rallies and excellent recoveries saw Gould beat Usher in four before Mole’s consistency saw him past Amo in three. Two more wins in straight followed as Gould completed his maximum against Johnson and then Mole beat Toye as the teams found themselves locked at 4-4. It was then Amo’s turn to win from two sets down to Johnson but Usher and Mole won the doubles in straight against Amo and Gould to see the match finish as a draw.
NWSCE’s Edna Stone, Joel Lodge, Kyle Locke and Brenda Baldock hosted Aylsham
JJ TAYLOR
Methodist’s David Slater, Neil Powell and Nash Panday with Stone winning the opener against Slater in straight. Lodge made a recovery against Slater to win 11-13, 6-11, 11-2, 11-5, 12-10. The rest of the battles went the visitor’s way with just one more set dropped as Slater beat Locke 11-3, 8-11, 13-11, 11-2. However there were still plenty of tight sets in Aylsham’s win such as Powell edging out Stone 16-14 in the third and Panday’s 13-11, 12-10, 11-8 win against her.
In the first division, Hunworth Village Hall was the venue as Pirate’s Barry Evans, Andy and Laura Marsh hosted NWSCA’s Andy Beane and the John’s Vaughan and Batchford.
The first eight singles went the way of the visitors with Evans taking a set from both Beane and Vaughan. Andy Marsh also took a set from Beane and then won the final singles against Vaughan 11-5, 6-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-4. Beane and Batchford beat Evans and Andy Marsh 16-14, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9 to wrap up NWSCA’s 9-1 win.
