Don’t make it easy for thieves

spy hole - a chain allows you to speak to the caller without opening the door fully and the spy hole also you to see who is at the door. • Fit five lever mortice locks to all external doors. • Check your cylinder locks on patio/plastic doors and ensure they are snap and bump resistant - a local Master Locksmith can advise if you are not sure.

With the clocks having gone forward at the end of last month, householders across Norfolk are being urged not to make it easy for potential thieves.

Officers are advising people to pay extra attention to home and vehicle security with the onset of lighter nights – often seen as an opportunist time for this type of crime.

Chief Superintendent Nick Dean said: “Most thefts are carried out by opportunist thieves. The coming summer months can bring with them thieves on the look-out for lapses in security – such as doors and windows left open or property left on display at beauty spot car parks. People are advised to be aware and make use of simple crime prevention methods which deprive thieves of the opportunity to steal.”

KEYS • Never leave a spare key in a convenient hiding place such as under the doormat, burglars know all the usual hiding places. • Never leave your house or car keys in or near a door or window.

Attention should also be paid to the security of SHEDS AND GARAGES and to the property stored within.

Norfolk Constabulary offers the following advice to residents:

WINDOWS • Always lock your windows when you leave the house. • Remove the keys and keep them in a safe place. However, everyone should know where the keys are kept so they can escape in an emergency. DOORS • Keep your front and back doors locked or in view when you are at home. • Use or consider fitting a door chain and

PARKED CARS – especially those left in remote areas such as beauty spots – should be left locked and secure with no property left on display and satellite navigation devices, car audio equipment, cameras, handbags and laptops should be removed from the vehicle entirely.

thieves and keep handbags closed and mobile phones out of sight and kept securely on their person.

Chief Superintendent Dean added: “Norfolk is an extremely safe place to live and your chances of being a victim of such crimes still remain extremely low, but you should consider making your house look like someone is at home. Don’t become an easy target. We would also encourage people to be a good neighbour - If anyone is spotted acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood, call the police."

Anyone with information about thieves operating in their area should contact Norfolk Constabulary on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555 111.

An EACH band for your hand

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) has launched a new wristband to raise vital funds and awareness for the charity.

The EACH wristbands are in the charity’s branded purple and orange colours and feature the EACH logo. They’ll be on sale online, in EACH shops and at fundraising events.

Melanie Chew, EACH Director of Fundraising, said: “We’re really pleased with the new wristbands and are confident they’ll be popular with our supporters. They’re a great way to raise funds and because they’re really colourful they’ll be noticed and help us to raise the profile and awareness of EACH too.”

The wristbands are available from the EACH website www.each.org.uk/wristband and cost £1.50 including postage and packaging. They will also be sold in EACH shops and at events for £1. The launch of the wristbands follows the success of The EACH Bracelet which was designed by Ed Sheeran’s mum Imogen, features orange and purple ‘smartie-style’ beads and retails at £10. The EACH Bracelet was worn by HRH The Duchess of Cambridge when she visited The Treehouse in March last year which boosted sales.

It is now one year since Rose Villa Publications began publishing the North Walsham Times, Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent!

“In that time we have increased our circulation to 18,000 copies fortnightly from 15,600, which has helped us to reach readers from Aylsham to Holt, from Mundesley to Weybourne and many other outlying villages. I would just like to say thank you to all our advertisers, staff and readers for helping us to grow the magazines and to make them the most read magazines in North Norfolk.” - Eric Hayton, proprietor. 100 Wonderful days of school

Pupils at Millfield Primary School in North Walsham had a fantastic day on 15th February celebrating a hundred days of school. Each class planned a maths day of activities, which centred around the number 100. There was an open morning for the parents to participate in number related activities in the classrooms. Each class created a ‘100’ display, which was show-cased in the school hall in the afternoon for all the children to enjoy. There was also a special sharing assembly to celebrate some of the amazing work and to announce the winners of the ‘100 competition’.

The competition was open to all of the pupils and the challenge was to design a poster or artwork using different types of mediums to celebrate the 100 days of Maths in school. It was hard to pick the winners as there were so many to choose from but the lucky winners were Joshua Bloom, Tegan Hicks and Molly McCrory the runners up were Ellen Weston, Charlie Paget and Dylan Reid-Webb. Molly McCrory; one of the winners; said “I had a lot of fun helping my class design a giant dog bone. We then stuck 100 dog pictures onto it and displayed it in the hall. I was so glad to be one of the winners of the competition there were so many designs!”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

When cats come into care they experience a completely different environment to that which they have been used to. Some join us from homes where they have received lots of loving care, others have been badly treated by their owners and some have been living outside for some time. Although they will be treated with kindness and affection, receive regular meals and have any problems/conditions attended to they are confined to an area much smaller that what they are used to. Some settle into their new accommodation straight away while others will take time to accept the changes in their lives. imid cats usually benefit from having somewhere to hide and provision is made for them to do so. Some others react by hissing and growling and we find the best policy is to ignore the cats, get on with the feeding and cleaning and they will soon come round. We find it is best for the cat to settle at its own pace and this always works, given time.

The same applies but in reverse when a cat leaves us with its new family. They are leaving us to take up residence in a far larger space with lots of new noises and sometimes new companions (feline or otherwise). This is particularly true when applied to kittens who may been with us since birth. Sometimes a cat will arrive at its new home and react as if it has always been there but this is the exception rather than the rule.

Norfolk County Council elections

- make sure you’re registered!

Norfolk County Council elections are coming on 2 May and North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is urging all residents to make sure they are entitled to vote.

Every four years 84 councillors are elected from across the whole county of Norfolk to make decisions about county-wide services. North Norfolk has 11 councillors, representing the county electoral divisions of Cromer, Fakenham, Holt, Hoveton and Stalham, Melton Constable, Mundesley, North Walsham East, North Walsham West and Erpingham, Sheringham, South Smallburgh and Wells.

Local elections are an important part of the democratic process, which is why NNDC wants to remind everyone to think about their vote ahead of the election. People who are not yet registered to vote or who have recently moved need to send in their application to be added to the register at their current address as soon as possible. To be eligible to vote at these elections the last date for receiving applications is Wednesday 17 April. The deadline for applying for a postal vote or amending or cancelling an existing one is 5pm on 17 April. Proxy applications can be accepted up to 5pm on Wednesday 24 April.

For more information about these elections please visit http://www.northnorfolk.org/council/5008.asp Alternatively contact North Norfolk District Council’s Electoral Services team on 01263 516046 or 516317.

We usually suggest the cat is confined to one or two rooms to begin with, their food dishes and litter trays placed in quiet corners (but not together) and allowed to get used to their new home gradually. Some cats may hide and Stephanie gets calls from worried new owners when this happens. She advises them that it is best to let them come out when they feel comfortable to do so and just give them time. We cannot emphasise enough how important it is not to worry if your new cat is not immediately a lap cat but that with time and patience they will settle and be the cat you were looking for. If you acknowledge this fact the transition period will be so much easier for your family and the cat.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving a call on the above number.

Of however you are interest in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 to see if you are eligible for a voucher.

David’s magical, fantastical pruper Narrwich Sticky Toffee Puddin’ (bor)

This week’s recipe comes from the fiery imagination of David Chattenden, my chef de partie here at the Grove. He’s found his way to the quiet backwater of Cromer from the hustle, bustle and bright lights of Norwich, which of course means he uses some big words from time to time, but we usually just understand what he’s saying and I have to say that he does make the most incredible sticky toffee pudding.

The season is upon us after a long, cold winter and the Grove is already very busy. The house itself always seems to enjoy being full with people and I do hope you get the chance to come up and see us for lunch, dinner, the best Sunday roast in North Norfolk, or to look round our brand new Orchard Rooms, five guest bedrooms set in the grounds which are already proving a massive hit.

In the meantime, enjoy David’s Sticky Toffee Puddin’, and I look forward to seeing you soon.

INGREDIENTS

The Puddin’ 200g dates, stoned and chopped 250ml black tea (not too strong) ½ tsp. bicarbonate of soda 85g soft, unsalted butter 175g self-raising flour 1 tsp. mixed spice 175g soft demerrara sugar 2 eggs (beaten) 1 orange (zested) 150g chopped walnuts

The sauce 100g dark muscavado sugar 100g unsalted butter 140ml double cream

METHOD

mixed, orange zest and chopped walnuts.

Add the dates and tea.

Mix and pour into a buttered tin and bake for 30-35 mins until the top is firm to the touch.

For the sauce: melt the butter on a low heat, add the sugar and boil until well the sugar is dissolved, then lastly add the cream.

Heat the oven to 180c

Boil the dates and tea in a saucepan to soften the dates, stir in bicarbonate of soda and set aside

Beat together the sugar and butter until pale and creamy, and then fold in the egg, flour,

Rotary chief visits local club

District 1080 Governor, Trevor Sayer, visited Rotarians in North Walsham last month. He is pictured with President John Watts, and two Rotarians who represent over half the RCNW's 66 year history - George Hawkes (Hon Member - joined 1979) and Geoff Harrison (joined 2008).

Like all Governors, Trevor holds office for a year and during that time enjoys visiting the 77 clubs in his district which comprises Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridge and some parts of Hertfordshire – quite a challenge in itself.

Trevor’s year had a number of projects with a strong emphasis on young people. These include the “Wheelie Good Idea” designed to maximise the legacy of the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics through the purchase of sports wheel chairs. In this Rotarians are sponsored to travel between clubs using non-standard means including running (North Walsham), by sea (Cromer & Sheringham) and of course by wheelchair (Aylsham).

He was upbeat about the work of Rotary International to eradicate polio from the world - something which it was on track to do as early as 2018. One local fundraising project was a partnership with North Norfolk Speakers Club held an International Speech Contest and Stokes Sauces and Evaluation Contest in North Walsham on Wednesday 6 March. involved Rotarians from clubs across The event was well attended and the standard of speakers notably high. the District. structure of the worldwide Rotary movement. He was given a warm vote of thanks and applauded my members.

Trevor is a chemist by profession and lives near Stowmarket. He is a member of the Ipswich Wolsey rotary club. His visit brought two figures from English history face to face – Cardinal Wolsey, Henry VIII’s minister who founded Ipswich School and Horatio Nelson, almost 300 years later, who went to school in North Walsham at the Paston School.

Rotary is the largest service organisation in the world with a membership of 1.2m men and women in 34000 clubs worldwide. Rotarians ask “What would it take to change the world?” and believe that this starts with a commitment to Service Above Self.

The Rotary Club of North Walsham meets every Monday at the Scarborough Hill Hotel, Old Yarmouth Road, North Walsham, 5.30 for 6.15pm.

Art and Photography trip to Amsterdam

Paston Sixth Form College Art and Photography students have returned from a brilliant trip to Amsterdam. A key component of their course is visiting galleries in the UK and Europe. In total 37 students and four staff travelled by ferry and train to Amsterdam.

Students with teaching staff

Highlights of the trip included visits to the Stedeliijk Museum, The Van Gogh Museum and the Foam Photography gallery. Unexpected snow made it very tricky for students taking photographs on the trip but they met the challenge and used all their skills to complete the work on their trip. The Art department have already started planning their next trip to Berlin.

Lizards and Dragons at Little Nick’s Nursery

The children in Nursery and Reception at St. Nicholas House School, North Walsham, enjoyed a visit from The Seal and Bird Sanctuary. Some of the children were brave enough to see, stroke and handle a dwarf monitor lizard which felt “ticklish”, a bearded dragon which was “warm and very prickly” and a boa constrictor which was “very long and heavy.” They also witnessed a tame rook defending her owner, a kestrel flying across the school hall to grab its meal of a chick’s leg and an eagle owl watching them as they left the hall at the end. This visit formed one of the highlights at the end of the Spring Term. Other activities included an Easter disco, and Easter Bunny egg hunt and an Easter assembly when they wore their Easter crowns and showed their pictures of chickens to the parents who were invited to attend the service.

I am writing this letter to all of you, just to let you know that I am standing as a Labour candidate for the forthcoming County Council elections. I am doing this, to give people who would normally vote Labour, or would like to change their voting habits, the opportunity to use their Democratic right to do so.

Local groups come together to promote community transport schemes

How to promote and expand on community car schemes to help people get to their doctor and hospital appointments was the topic of discussion at a meeting in Cromer last month organised by local MP Norman Lamb.

There are a number of such schemes operating in different parts of North Norfolk, all on slightly different lines. Many fundraise to help cover costs and some also run social events in the local community. All depend on a pool of volunteer drivers, many of them retired, and a dedicated co-ordinator to match those drivers up with requests for transport.

For example: • Aldborough Village Care also runs a lunch club for local residents • Holt Caring Society covers Holt surgery patients and has been going for twenty years or more • Ludham Village car scheme, covering Ludham parish was established in February 2012 and since it began has provided transport to over 300 appointments • North Norfolk Community Transport (formerly North Walsham Area Community Transport) is probably the largest scheme, covering North Walsham and the surrounding area • Potter Heigham Good Neighbour scheme also provides transport for people to do their shopping and runs a free monthly tea

afternoon • Wroxham, Hoveton and Belaugh Community Care has been going since 1986 and covers transport to any medical appointment for patients of the local practice

However, in some areas – notably Sheringham and Cromer – there is nothing at all, meaning people who cannot drive are forced to rely on taxis or public transport to get to appointments at the local surgery and the Norfolk & Norwich hospital.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said: “My mother was lucky enough to have the Holt Caring Society scheme available to help her get to hospital appointments in recent months. It is a fantastic scheme, very simple, very local, but of real practical benefit. It is a lifeline for people like my mum who does not drive herself. Schemes such as this in other communities are invaluable for local residents. However, it is a lottery - some people are not so fortunate. I am regularly contacted by constituents about this issue. Public transport from rural North Norfolk into Norwich for a hospital appointment is simply not a realistic option for people. The question is, what can we do for ourselves to improve the situation? The existing schemes were set up by individuals who saw a problem in their community, and saw a simple way to fix it. We will be looking at whether there is scope for groups to work together to help cover

Maria Ball has done the right thing – Norman Lamb

Maria Ball, Chair of the East of England Ambulance Trust, has resigned with immediate effect. The announcement comes after the Trust was found to be failing to meet key standards on the care and welfare of people who use the service, during a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission.

There have been long-running complaints and concerns about ambulance waiting times in rural parts of the county. The CQC report praised frontline staff but highlighted slow response times to emergency calls and a “significant inequity of service” between rural and urban areas. It is the first time an ambulance trust anywhere in the country has been found to be failing on this measure.

Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk, has been pursuing this issue relentlessly for more than a year and has met with the Trust several times since October 2011. He was promised action plans and improvements, but these promises were not delivered.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said “I believe that Maria Ball has done the right thing. The performance of the Trust has caused enormous concern in Norfolk. It’s essential now that we get strong leadership to turn this Trust around and to ensure that local people have a service that they can rely on.” 14

the gaps. What more can we do to promote and extend existing schemes, and what support can we provide to people who may be thinking about establishing a scheme in their own area? The meeting was a chance to get the relevant people talking to each other and find answers to these questions. The community car schemes we have in North Norfolk show what you can do with a small group of like-minded people focused on finding practical solutions.”

Tracy Jessop, Assistant Director for Environment, Transport & Development at Norfolk County Council said “Small vehicle schemes are an important component of the transport mix and a valuable resource, particularly for health transport. In challenging financial times, it’s vital that we all work together to make best use of limited resources. I'm hoping this will be the first step in getting wider provision in north Norfolk.”

Mrs Spindler, a resident of Worstead who has used the North Norfolk Community Transport scheme, said "The MediCar service is a lifeline. I have no transport of my own and my son is at work all day, so he cannot take me to the hospital. I don't know what I would do without it as there is no bus to take me." She went on to praise the "helpfulnessness of the drivers, in particular the "care and attention" that they give her.

North Norfolk beach huts and chalets – get 50% off weekly hire

Having a base by the sea makes spending time at the beach so much easier, whether you use it to store beach essentials, as a place to get changed after a dip, or just want to shelter with a flask and a book from bracing breezes. And North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is giving local residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy a seaside beach hut or chalet at half price from early April to the end of June this year.

Subject to availability, this very special offer applies to weekly lets of beach huts in Mundesley, Sheringham and Cromer from 6 April to 29 June. Prices normally start at £45 per week, so some lucky people will be able to enjoy a hut or chalet for a week on one of north Norfolk’s fabulous beaches for less than £23, making it just over £3 a day, for up to a maximum of three weeks!

NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets, Rhodri Oliver, said, “Our fabulous resort beaches are always busy and we rarely have enough beach huts or chalets available to satisfy demand in the main summer holiday period. But earlier and later in the year we usually have a few vacancies. This year we thought it would be better to make them available at a lower price, so that they could all be used and enjoyed by more people. I hope lots of people will be able to take up this very special offer.”

Grumpy Old Man

I suppose I shall be castigated for saying this but, for me, the fact that Comic Relief is finally over and television and radio programmes can, for a brief period, cease battering our collective consciences is the real relief. It may be heresy to say so, but I don’t think I am alone in being heartily sick and tired of the seemingly endless procession of habitual do-gooding events which increasingly dominate the annual round.

Each major event – Children in Need, Sport Relief, Comic Relief – expands its time, effort and scope each year (just like Christmas which kicks off in September) so that the periods of calm in between when the exhortations and hype die down, become steadily shorter. It has reached a stage when I refer to BBC 1 as ‘the charity channel’. What is more I have a feeling that it is a means of providing our taxpayer-funded state broadcaster with an easy way of filling schedules with the home-made antics of both public and celebrity participants, none of whom requires any fees because ‘it’s for charity, innit?’ Quite frankly it has become

officially organised national begging with menaces on a massive scale : ‘Give us your bloomin’ wonga’ (or we will label you selfish, mean and heartless by default).

What sort of society have we become? Every organised event, for sport, entertainment or amusement now attracts people seeking sponsorship for a ‘worthy cause’ whilst taking part. This constant demand for our attention and our money has, I think, become excessive and instead of a warm feeling engendered by a natural impulse to help those less fortunate, we end up either beaten into submission or so hardened to it all that we just shut our senses to the continual blandishments and batten down the h atches over our natural kind instincts in order

to cope with the whole problem of charity overkill.

What, if anything, can be done to scale it back to a sensitive level? 'Editor's Note - we pride ourselves on being a community publication and as such we endeavour to allow all our readers the opportunity to express their views, regardless of our own personal opinions. Our Grumpy Old Man column has provoked quite a few readers' replies in its time and we feel that this particular article will be no exception - so if you would like to reply to him via our paper please do feel free to put pen to paper - I anticipate a full postbag!'

“People who currently visit us know that we have quality plants and offer great advice, this event just takes this ethos to the next level and a wider audience. We hope that it gives everyone, from the novice to the experienced gardener the opportunity to access a broad range of expert gardening advice for free, whilst also being a fun day out for all the family and helping to raise some money for a good cause..”

Spread over a whole weekend there is plenty of time to visit and no excuse not to bring the children. Entice them with the promise of getting up close with the birds of prey from the Seal and Bird Rescue Trust, a treasure trail within the Nursery grounds, planting seeds to take home and, if they are good, lunch or a cake from Purdy’s tea room.

This year’s event, on 18th and 19th May, also brings together five local garden designers competing to win the Woodgate Nursery Best Garden Design Award, voted for by you. Not only will you be inspired and find out how to create these differing ‘looks’ in your garden, but by simply voting you will automatically be entered into a prize draw, with a £50 garden voucher as first prize.

Last year’s winner, Woodgate Nursery, will be trying to retain their trophy; and after winning Gold, Best in Show and People’s Choice for their show garden at the 2012 Sandringham

Purdy’s Tea Room will be open as usual from 10am to 5pm and will be offering a selection of light lunches, freshly baked cakes and scones, Lavazza coffee and speciality teas.

Perhaps you want to create the perfect lawn (or one a little better than your neighbours) then you will want to make a beeline for Green Thumb lawn care or Mobile Mowers garden machinery equipment . There will also be demonstrations from Woodgate Forge, Drew Charlton Willow Fencing and Rutland Willow weaving, craft stands, Norfolk Farm Shepherds Huts and other vegetable growing and garden structures.

Peter Purdy, Woodgate Nursery owner said,

Although the event is free entry, there will be collection buckets available for anyone wishing to make a donation to the Air Ambulance, with last year’s event raising over £600.

NORTH WALSHAM & BRADFIELD FLOWER CLUB

On 28 March we began the celebrations of 55 years since the original "Bradfield Flower Club" was formed in Bradfield.

A specially made cake was cut by Chairman, Jennifer Adcock and enjoyed by the members with their afternoon tea.

Before the meeting began, a cheque for £1000 was presented to Jamie Edghill from the East Anglian Air Ambulance. We think Jamie must be a secret flower arranger, as he stayed (and took photographs) throughout a wonderful demonstration by Area Demonstrator, Jean Crane - or maybe it was her hilarious stories

that kept him - either way - we now know that the Air Ambulance made a call to North Walsham during the meeting whilst Jamie was actually with us, which aptly demonstrates just how much the Air Ambulance is relied upon these days.

To continue the celebrations this year, our next meeting will be at the Community Centre, where Alan Gray from East Ruston will be demonstrating his unique style of flower arranging with, I am sure, lots of tips and knowledge to share about his plants at East Ruston. We can't wait. Doors open at 1.30pm for refreshments and retail therapy and Alan

Melissa Sheldrake from Tacolneston is a 'newbie' and will demonstrate "The Language of Flowers" on 23 May when we are back at the Catholic Hall. Then in June Joanne Poulter is visiting again from Peterborough. In July and August we have a garden meeting and a trip to Pensthorpe, after which we welcome back the wonderfully funny & ever-popular Julia Knights with "Let’s Dance the Night Away".

So lots of interest coming your way - just come along to any of our meetings for £4 or, if you prefer, you can join for a whole year of floral entertainment for £20. We look forward to welcoming you to our friendly club. North Walsham Times 420 April 13th 2013

Congratulations and Celebrations!

recognised by the school achieving an overall grade of Good with all aspects being at least Good. We now have the determination and ambition to make Millfield an Outstanding school. This drive for improvement has only been possible due to the hard work and commitment of the staff, pupils, parents and Governors of the school.”

The pupils created different pieces of art and other media to demonstrate why they thought Millfield was such a great school. Some of these included persuasive posters, headbands, stained glass effect windows which spelt out ‘Go Millfield’ and some children even created their own Millfield rap song. The event was rounded off with a 300 blue balloon release on the school field and then an open afternoon for parents to come and share in some of the displays in the school hall. It was certainly a day to be proud of! Millfield Primary School in North Walsham was bursting with pride on Wednesday 20 March. All of the children and staff took part in a very special ‘Celebration Day’, where they invited parents and the school Governors to come and join in with the activities.

The celebration was to mark all of the hard work and drive shown by the pupils, staff, Governors and parents of the school, which culminated in the school receiving a ‘Good ‘ rating from a recent Ofsted inspection. Mrs Harazdiuk; the Head Teacher said, “When the school was last inspected in February 2011, we were judged to be Satisfactory overall with some aspects of Good. Over the last two years there has been determination and drive to further improve the school and this was

Petition set up for Vodafone customers to detail anger over signal problems

A petition has been set-up to record comments about the on-going Vodafone signal problems that have continued to inconvenience businesses and traders, tourists, and residents in the north Norfolk area since October.

Last month Vodafone assured customers that all faulty hardware at local masts had been replaced but could not guarantee that faults wouldn't occur further down the line. And over the Easter weekend customers living across Mundesley, North Walsham, Aylsham, Cromer, and Sheringham have suffered from the issue again.

North Norfolk Labour Party has since set up a petition www.vodafonenfk.com - which it hopes will detail public anger to provide to Vodafone representatives, after being approached by disappointed business owners and residents.

Jono Read, press officer for North Norfolk Labour Party, said: "The statements from Vodafone are simply not good enough. They are expecting customers to fulfil their contract with the firm - but Vodafone cannot offer guarantees that they will their contract with their customers in north Norfolk.

Vodafone representatives are offering conflicting advice, with some asking customers to shell out more money for the equipment to help boost signals, while others are getting theirs free. They need to compensate all involved.

We are particularly concerned by the way Vodafone are treating some of those trying to leave their contracts early - with one local lady threatened with debt collectors and ending up in a small claims over the issue." North Walsham Times 420 April 13th 2013

North Norfolk Supporter Group Success

Dogs for the Disabled North Norfolk Supporter Group raised nearly £2,000 in 2012 in a variety of fundraising efforts including supermarket collections, giving talks to schools and community groups, running charity stands at local events and managing collection tins in local businesses.

All members of the North Norfolk Supporter Group would like to thank everyone involved, from those who donated to volunteers who gave up their time to help and attend events. Stephanie Lawless, Community Fundraising Manager at Dogs for the Disabled’s Banbury headquarters, said “We’re delighted and would like to thank the group for their hard work raising these desperately needed funds and for helping to spread the word about the charity’s work. Nationwide our Supporter Groups raised

a grand total of £106,000.”

Dogs for the Disabled has trained over 630 Assistance Dogs to date and currently has more than 275 working in England and Wales. It costs £12,000 to fund a dog from birth to fully trained Assistance Dog and nearly £20,000 to fund the dog for its working life.

There are 180 Assistance Dogs working in partnership with adults with disability and 56 working with children with a disability.

Fifteen years ago Hilda Kitchen, now resident of Overstrand, together with a small group of friends sang Sir John Stainer’s “The Crucifixion” on Good Friday. From this (Easter) egg grew the Cantamus Community Choir and the tradition to repeat the performance annually. So it was that on Good Friday, St. Martin Church, Overstrand was full with a participating audience to sing the hymns and listen to Cantamus and “Friends” once again singing “The Crucifixion”.

The anniversary event was all the more special as Cantamus resident pianist Matthew Bond made his conducting debut leading Hilda and many other old and new “Friends” who reunited with Cantamus to sing. Brent Palmer and Simon Gray were the principal bass and tenor soloists and David Ballard, Cantamus’ resident conductor, displayed more musical talent playing the church organ.

Cantamus would like to thank audience and friends for making the evening a glorious start to Easter. Please join us again next year. In the meantime, Cantamus are rehearsing for their 17 May concert of Vivaldi’s “Gloria” together with English part-songs and folk songs. If you would like to sing with us, come along to a rehearsal; Thursday at 7.30pm in St. James Church, Southrepps, NR11 8NR. Our members come from Sheringham, Mundesley, North Walsham and towns/villages in between. So if you would like to join Cantamus but transport is a problem, please contact David 07785 782498 as a lift may be possible. No audition or experience is required, just a desire to have fun (we laugh a lot) and sing. North Walsham Times 420 April 13th 2013

NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUB

Perhaps one of the advantages of a group comprising older member is that while they may not possess the same vitality as younger organisations, they usually have plenty of memories. This was demonstrated when Eric Jones, a member of North Walsham Probus Club addressed his colleagues last month at the Community Centre.

His secondary education was at Wimbledon then later at Sir Joseph Williamson School at Rochester where he later taught mathematics for 35 years. This was interspersed by a period of National Service, which initially led him to Oxford for six months where, whilst in the Army, he lived as an undergraduate studying electronics. This was followed by a War Office Selection Board at Ullapool in the Cairngorms to assess his potential as an officer. Although

he was unsuccessful in being offered a commission in the Corps, he nevertheless stayed in the Royal Corps of Signals and was eventually drafted to Greece, via Naples in 1945. He described his main activity as maintaining the communications ‘with a screw driver and a pair of pliers’.

His experiences evidently left him with some profound impressions, not least the advice he was given regarding their behaviour as a visiting force. The suggestion that the behaviour of the German forces left something to be desired in terms of humanity may be an understatement. He was present during the immediate aftermath of the Second World War when communist uprisings created fear that the country might fall into the communist bloc. Some may remember that this was

subsequently followed by the ‘Colonels Revolt’. Eric returned to the UK to be demobbed in August 1947 and married Rosina in 1950.

He also returned to Sir Joseph Williamson School, where he was to teach for 35 years, a period of his life which was not without its lighter moments, especially when playing various parts in productions of Gilbert & Sullivan’s light operas.

Performing at the Globe Theatre, Rochester and Chatham Dockyard this gave him an opportunity to develop a talent for singing in such well known productions as ‘The Mikado’, ‘H.M.S. Pinafore’ and the ‘Major General’.

The next meeting will be on the 24 April at the North Walsham Community Centre, when new members will be cordially welcomed. Ted Gadsden

Did you have a relative in the Merchant Navy in World War Two?

Those who served on merchant ships have been a largely forgotten part of World War Two. Yet without their sacrifice, Britain could not have survived for more than a few days.

Time is running out to collect the stories of those brave men who served in the Merchant Navy on dangerous convoys across the Atlantic, into the frozen Arctic, down the hazardous North Sea channels or further afield in the Med or Far Eastern seas.

We are running a project supported by Heritage Lottery Fund and would like any reader to send us information about a relative, friend or neighbour who served during the war. Perhaps you are a veteran yourself with a story to tell. We are calling our project 'Unsung Heroes - Not Sinking Without Trace'. I hope that you can help us make sure this does not happen and that history is fair to the men of the British Merchant Navy.

Red Noses and Potatoes!

Well Red Nose day was certainly a little different this year for the pupils and staff at Millfield Primary School in North Walsham. Not only were they dressing up in something funny or something red or in some cases a mixture of both, but they had a visit from a tractor and Norman Lamb!

The school is taking part in a national competition organised by the Potato Council of Great Britain and on Red Nose day schools across the country were planting potato seeds to look after until judging on the 29 June. The aim is to see who can grow the largest potatoes. We had a local farmer Tim Papworth, who came into the school to talk to the children on how to look after their potatoes.

Much to the delight of Sycamore class he also bought along his tractor, the children were then lucky enough to sit in the cab and pretend to drive it, a first for most of them. Then Mr Norman Lamb the North Norfolk MP who is a huge supporter of the school, came in and helped the children plant their seeds. The school helped raise £400 pounds with cake sales, donations and a class coin trail for Comic Relief. It was a productive day all round. North Walsham Times 420 April 13th 2013

Create a Seaside Sally at Henry Blogg Museum

The RNLI Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer is holding a free drop-in creative session on Saturday 13 April. Children are encouraged to visit the museum to make their own seaside favourite.

Seaside Sallys are often seen at seaside resorts and consist of decorated frames with peep-holes for the face. The museum has stockpiled a vast selection of beads, papers, fabrics and much more for children to design holiday-makers, pirates, mermaids and RNLI lifeboat men. The session will run between 10am and 4pm.

This crafty activity compliments a current exhibition at the museum which looks at the history of souvenirs and considers what makes objects special to us. Keepsakes, Key Rings Strong Man Seaside Sally and Kiss Me Quick! : A History of Souvenirs aims to create a feeling of nostalgia by recalling holiday memories whilst also creating new ones.

The exhibition includes plenty of child friendly activities. These activities range from dressing up hats to a strong man Seaside Sally, a Punch and Judy theatre and visitors can again be artistic by designing a postcard.

Jacqui Palmer, Museum Manager said: ‘We look forward to welcoming children and their parents and hope to see a range of exciting creations.’

Exhibitions Assistant Rebecca Fletcher said: ‘I hope to see lots of families taking part. I had a lot of fun making a mermaid Seaside Sally and I am certain others will too. It will be a great opportunity for lots of family photographs.’

Admission to the museum and drop-in session is free, but donations are always appreciated.

Celebrities Step Behind The Camera

National Trust recruits famous faces to encourage the country to share favourite places -

Celebrities are used to life in front of the lens but this spring stars from the world of sport, film and TV are taking a turn behind the camera.

Actors Kim Cattrall, Sienna Guillory and Jude Law, chefs The Fabulous Baker Brothers and England rugby ace Austin Healey are among those who have shared photographs of the places that mean the most to them as part of a nationwide initiative by the National Trust to celebrate the importance of ‘special places’ in people’s lives.

The campaign follows research undertaken by the charity which found that 84 per cent of Brits have a favourite place they go to which positively affects their wellbeing and happiness.

Photographs by the celebrities are being showcased on a new app created by the National Trust to encourage people to share their favourite place and why it means so much to them. The app will also feature places that are important to National Trust staff and volunteers and members of the public.

Alex Green, Learning officer at Brancaster Millennium Activity Centre in Norfolk is just one of the Trust’s many staff who has shared

20

the place that means the most to her:

“Each of the places we look after has its own individual story but is also uniquely special in thousands of people’s lives for thousands of different reasons. The National Trust is all about championing the importance of special places and we want to get the nation involved in discovering or revisiting their favourite place and sharing it with friends and family.

Brancaster Harbour is such a magical place, particularly during the summer holidays, my friends and I would spend every waking hour down there, either sailing when the tide was in, or mud sliding in the creeks when the tide was out. Our washing machine suffered under the strain of all my muddy clothes and my bed was always full of sand - but I had the best time growing up in Brancaster Staithe and wouldn’t have swapped it for the world.”

To explore the National Trust places and find or discover new special places log onto www.nationaltrust.org.uk.

The nation can also register their special place and tell everyone why they love it at www.facebook.com/nationaltrust and #specialplaces

Evacuee Day at The Belfry Monday 25 March saw The Belfry C of E Primary School in Overstrand take a leap back in time. The children and adults were visited by Poppyline Education Team, led by Jenny Phillips, and experienced an Evacuee Day.

The action kicked off with a mock air raid and bomb explosion as the children, dressed and labelled as evacuees from Bethnall Green in London, lined up in the playground. A recording of enemy bombers and finally the all clear siren was played as the children crouched in the school hall. The event was organised as part of the school History Topic, Within Living Memory. Ten members of the Poppyline Education Team led activities including Dig for Victory, ARP Billeting and Rationing where the children made a lunch prepared by themselves using food similar to that available during WW2. With chocolate biscuits and crisps missing from their usual lunch the children started to understand how The Rocket House Cafe saw Becky Betts of Norfolk Radio’s Treasure food which is now taken for granted, was so different then. The children Hunt Show surprised by a singing flash mob on Easter Monday. learned about growing food and took home the beans and peas they planted in pots. Becky Betts was following her last set of clues for the programme, when

Treasure Hunt finds a Flash Mob in Cromer!

she was told that she had to sing before an audience before she could be given the next clue. Becky was at the busy Rocket House Cafe on Cromer’s sea front, when she was told she had to sing Do-Re-Mi from The Sound of Music.

Becky was worried that her singing would put customers off their coffee and scones, but was assured that all would be well. As she began to sing, customers joined in and soon more than twenty members of the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society were in full voice. The Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society (CSODS) are putting on the musical, The Sound of Music at the Pavilion Theatre at the end of May. An emotional Becky was handed tissues as well as the next clue as the song ended. As she left to get to the final clue of the show, the members of CSODS went out to the radio car and sang, So Long, Farewell, as Becky drove off to complete the Treasure Hunt.

The Sound of Music will be at the Pavilion Theatre, Cromer from 25th May to 1st June. Tickets are available from the Pavilion Box Office. 01263 - 512495

The children also experienced being left to one side as their friends were chosen and joined a new family and themes were running in the classrooms which the children had asked to study including childhood, homes and re-housing and war torn Britain in the 1940s.

The busy and happy day ended with the school getting together in the hall to watch a black and white silent film and a good sing song from the first and second World Wars.

Briston’s Musical Multi-Handyman!

Despite the cold weather, the Briston Organ Show last month was still a well-attended affair, with a warm audience thrilling to the superb playing of top keyboard artist Jon Smith, who had travelled down in atrocious weather all the way from Sheffield!

Using a Yamaha Tyros keyboard and a Wersi performer organ, he gave us two hours of solid top quality live music - at times even playing both instruments at the same time, as well as singing!

His programme included the ever popular 'Forgotten Dreams', but uniquely played as a waltz(!), the bouncy 'Come Follow The Band' from Barnum, some stunning vocals with 'The Nearness of You' and 'S'Wonderful', toetappers like 'Save The Last Dance For Me' and 'Black Is Black', and for organ enthusiasts we got a good selection of bouncy 'Blackpool' numbers played in true Wurlitzer style! His gentle humour filled in the gaps between items, and the audience all roared for an encore as the evening came to a close.

MC Mick Leary told the audience that the show had raised £120 for the Copeman Centre Funds, and nearly £60 for the Air Ambulance, so the evening was a good result for everyone.

There are about eight organ shows in Briston each year - the next is on Friday 10 May, when top UK organist Steve Hubble will be at the Copeman Centre for the first time.

Tickets are just £6, with under 16s getting in for just £3. Advance booking is always essential, and you can reserve your tickets now by telephoning Carol on 01263 860844.

Perhaps we might see you there as well next time!

Red Arrows will not be at Cromer Carnival in 2013 Cromer Carnival committee has confirmed that their application for the Red Arrows at this year’s Carnival has been unsuccessful.

A spokesman for the Red Arrows said “Every year the number of requests far outstrips the resources available. We do look at all options to support as many events throughout the country as possible”.

The spokesman confirmed that the Carnival’s bid for the Red Arrows in 2014 will not be hindered by this year’s outcome.

The Red Arrows who have been coming to Cromer since 1981 are traditionally one of the highlights of Carnival Day. Over the past 31 years Cromer has been very fortunate to have them attend the Carnival over 25 times.

Carnival Chairman Tony Shipp said “We are obviously disappointed that the Red Arrows will not be with us this year. The first question I am always asked at the beginning of the year is "have we got the Red Arrows? They have become synonymous with Cromer Carnival and whilst the Carnival Committee can find the money to pay for them we will continue putting in the application each September.”

He added “We are working hard on trying to get another exciting aerial display for this year

and will do our best to get The Red Arrows back again for 2014.”

Plans are well underway for this year’s Carnival which looks set to be another bumper year. Acts already confirmed for Carnival day in the arena include Woodfords Dray, The White Helmets Motorbike Display Team, Romford Drum & Trumpet Corp, West Lancs. Dog Display Team and Out on a Wing Falconry.

Locals and visitors alike can get into the Carnival spirit on Sunday 7 July at the Carnival’s annual Raft Race and Tug of War competition.

CROMER CARNIVAL 2013 Confirmed dates so far include:

Laser Facelift at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic

More and more patients with busy lives are looking for less invasive treatments with less downtime to improve their profile and tightness of their face and neck. The laser assisted face and neck lift is an exciting, effective, and safe option for patients who wish to tighten the skin and underlying tissues of their face and neck. For good candidates, liquefying a small amount of fat to smooth the contours and heating the underlying tissues to tighten the skin may be the answer they are looking for.

We like it best as it avoids a tell-tale skin incision or scar in front of the ear. Any surgical procedure can cause a scar so we try and avoid this risk by not cutting the skin.

Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCAAM, Medical Director and Laser Surgeon at the Coltishall Clinic explains- “We use the newest generation of laser-assisted lipolysis [fatdestroying] and skin tightening devices. This is a third generation laser using wavelengths that allows the melting of fat and the heating of soft tissue to stimulate collagen formation to tighten the overlying skin. When used on the face, it is called a Laser Facelift.”

When to Choose the Laser Assisted Facelift Treatment...

Laser assisted facelifting is great for men or women. A good candidate for this procedure is: • in good general health • not smoking • has localised areas of fat in the jowl area and under the chin • has good skin integrity.

Skin tightening alone can be accomplished on underweight patients. Dr Gheyi will examine your face and neck to determine if you are a good candidate. A laser facelift is safer than and more economical than a traditional full face or neck lift.

How does the Laser Facelift Work? Dilute solution of a local anaesthetic is used to numb the areas treated on the face and neck. This can be done with minimal discomfort. You can be listening to your favourite music while this is being done. Once the area is numbed, three or four tiny 1mm openings are made, one behind each earlobe, and one or two under the chin. Small hollow metallic tubes called cannulas are passed through the fatty layer under the skin to make tunnels. Then, a tiny 0.6 mm laser fibre is passed through fat between the skin and the muscles. The laser energy heats the surrounding tissue. This stimulates collagen formation and assists in skin and tissue tightening. The amount of tightening greatly depends on skin type, age, elasticity, general health and other factors.

Lastly, a small amount of fat, the amount varies from patient to patient, is suctioned away when needed.

Shortthorn’s

Recovery and Results Typically, only one treatment is required to obtain optimal results. Initial results can be seen within one week, with continued improvement over the next three to four months as tissues continue to tighten and heal. Some patients may benefit from a limited incision or mini-lift at the same time if they have significant sagging in the jowl area. This can also be combined with a thread lift for additional tightening.

After the Laser Facelift, your face will be wrapped in a gauze compression dressing. The next day, you will be fitted into a facial compression garment. Under most circumstances, compression will be recommended for three to four days followed by nightly use only. Compression helps to push out swelling, decrease scar tissue formation, and promote smoothness of the treated tissues.

Laser facial sculpting is less invasive and less traumatic to tissues than a traditional facelift. Therefore, there is less downtime for recovery. Most patients are able to resume work in two to five days and return to all usual activity, including vigorous exercise, within two weeks. Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort in the initial post-operative period with gradual resolution of discomfort in the following days to weeks. Snugness of the skin may be experienced for a matter of months.

Coltishall Clinic offers a full range of Cosmetic Medical and Surgical Laser procedures. We offer a range of solutions including non-surgical face and neck lifts, liquid facelifts, thread lifts and now the innovative laser facelift.

Variety show for all the family at the Atrium CROMER, NORFOLK EST 2005

Acts of all ages will be stepping on stage to entertain at the North Walsham Atrium’s first variety show.

Songs, music, dance and comedy are all on the bill along with some specialist and novelty acts guaranteed to please all – with special family tickets on offer too.

The show is at the Atrium, off Spenser Avenue, on Friday April 26 and two performances on Saturday 27.

The show, the first full variety bill at the arts centre, will include talented local youngsters and performers who meet regularly at the venue as well as professionals.

Atrium development manager Joseph Ballard who will compere the show said: “We will be showing off the variety of talent we have here at The Atrium, from the regular groups who meet here to other performers who live nearby. “We want the town and the surrounding areas to come and support live theatre – made right here in North Walsham – so we can continue to expand what we can offer for everyone to enjoy.”

The programme ranges from gypsy belly dancing from Anam Cara Dance, the North Norfolk Ukulele Orchestra, the high school cast of Footloose to the professional dance group Candy and vocalist Krissi Jae Kitson.

Children from Millfield Primary and the Manor Road schools will also be taking part, as will members of The Atrium’s own Drama Club and Youth Theatre.

There will also be a classic old-time dance act, monologues and music hall acts.

Tickets are £9 adults and £6 children, students and over 60s. The family tickets (for 4 people) are £25. Tickets can be bought in person, online at www.theatrium.org.uk or by calling the box office on (01692) 400080.

The Atrium is signposted off Spenser Avenue and can be found between the high school and sports centre. There is free parking and the venue is wheelchair-friendly.

An invitation to act, dance and sing The Atrium’s new Drama Club and Youth

Theatre has proven a big a hit with young people – giving an insight into acting and theatre-making in an energetic and fun environment. Due to many requests, a new group called Sing It! will be starting this month for 8 to 15 year-olds.

A new community choir will also meet on Wednesday evenings for adults. Beginners are very welcome, and it doesn’t matter if you’ve never sung in public before or can’t read music.

The sessions promise to be fun and informal and will explore different styles of singing from musicals, acapella (without accompaniment) pop and even Disney.

Streetdance for children aged 8-15 will also be returning to The Atrium on weeknights and Saturday mornings and the venue is urging everyone to register their interest so they can start the classes once again.

If you are interested in taking part or perhaps you would like to help run the groups, call The Atrium on (01692) 400080 or pop in for a chat.

Changes to Legal Aid

0 1 6 9 2

4 0 2 3 0 0

By Neale Grearson Partner and Collaborative Lawyer at Hayes + Storr

From April 2013 there will be major changes in the public funding of legal costs for family work. The availability of legal aid has reduced over recent years with less people being financially eligible and the number of firms of solicitors offering legal aid reducing. The further cut backs will mean that from April 2013 legal aid as we have known it will no longer be available.

Until now those people financially eligible had been entitled to advice from a solicitor on such things as divorce and separation to include financial disputes and arrangements for their children on a relationship breakdown. From April 2013 only those cases involving domestic violence will legal aid be granted for. This will leave a large group of people that had previously been able to receive legal aid not receiving this. The situation has been deteriorating with the number of firms offering legal aid reducing so that it has been very difficult for even those financially eligible to find a local solicitor able to offer them legal aid. From now on very few people will qualify for legal aid.

The government has stated it is committed to individuals finding alternative ways of resolving disputes rather than the courts being involved. Mediation will continue to be funded under the legal aid system that remains and individuals are being encouraged to take more responsibility for their lives and the repercussions of a separation. Collaborative law and other methods of avoiding court involvement will become even more important. Collaborative law is one of the methods of

individuals keeping control of the situation and in a more common sense way meeting and reaching decisions rather than these being imposed by a Judge.

The courts are expecting an influx of people representing themselves without solicitors because they cannot afford to have solicitor act for them. This could cause a meltdown in the court system which is already under pressure from its own financial cutbacks. Relationship breakdown can be a very emotional time and if people are representing themselves they do not have the same objectivity and professionalism that a solicitor will bring to negotiations or any court proceedings. The courts and Judges are therefore expecting considerable problems. The role of solicitors will be even more important especially in situations where both parties to a divorce are not represented. Collaborative law and mediation as means of keeping control of the process and reducing the legal costs involved will be increasingly popular. Alternative methods of funding legal costs will also become more common such as children asking their parents or other relatives to assist them.

effects on their lives. Not taking legal advice is a big decision that someone could regret for a long time as you only get “one bite of the cherry” in dealing with the repercussions of a separation or a divorce.

“This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.”

The government’s view is that in a situation where there are limited resources funds cannot be made available for legal aid to cover an individuals divorce. This competes with the provision of other public services such as hospitals or schools. However, the knock on effect is that many people experiencing the most difficult period of their lives may find themselves without legal advice and making decisions that will have massive long term

If you require advice on this matter please contact Neale at our Sheringham office on 01263 825959. If you require advice on any other legal matter please telephone our Sheringham office on 01263 825959 or email law@hayes-storr.com

New rules to stop cover ups of poor care

The Coalition announced new rules last month to prevent cases of poor care being covered up.

The announcement came as part of the Government’s response to the public inquiry into the failings at Mid Staffordshire hospital which saw up to 1,200 patients die because of poor care.

Robert Francis QC, who led the inquiry, recommended that there should be a legal duty of candour to ensure that patients and families are informed if treatment or care has caused death or serious injury. There should also be an explanation of what has happened.

Commenting, North Norfolk MP and Minister of State for Care and Support Norman Lamb said ‘This was a Liberal Democrat manifesto

commitment that we are delivering on in Coalition. Poor care is simply unacceptable and staff at every level have a professional duty to speak up about it – and we will support them in doing so. The last Labour Government ignored calls from the Liberal Democrats and from campaigners to introduce a duty of candour. The new statutory duty of candour sends a very clear message about the importance of transparency and openness in the NHS’.

Commenting on Radio 4’s Today programme prior to the announcement, campaigner Peter Walsh, from Action against Medical Accidents said ‘This would be probably the biggest advance in patient safety and patients’ rights in the history of the NHS’.

There will also be a new role of Chief Inspector of Social Care to oversee the care received by elderly and vulnerable people, whether care homes or in their own home. The Chief Inspector will be responsible for driving up standards of care – and also highlighting examples of great care.

Commenting, Mr Lamb said ‘The idea is it will be a very high-profile public role, very much on the side of patients. I felt it was important that the lessons about high-quality care for patients in hospitals should also apply across the care system. It doesn’t matter what setting people are in – whether in hospital, in a care home or receiving care in their own home, we want to ensure the same high standards apply’.

SOS Radio Week 2013 Cheque Presentation

On the morning of Sunday 17 March members of the Bittern DX Group (amateur radio) involved with the GB5SLB SES, part of SOS Radio Week 2013 back in January returned to Sheringham Lifeboat Station to officially present them with the cheque. After a very quick ceremony BDXG Chairman Steve Balding G7VRK handed over £475 to David Hagan, Senior Helmsman of the lifeboat on the slipway.

Online donations of £25 have already been forwarded to RNLI HQ via the group’s Just Giving page so in total the GB5SLB event raised £500, a fantastic end to a wonderful SES! These funds were raised mostly from a raffle with the 1st prize of a Celebration Cake by “Mellie Makes Cakes” from Happisburgh along with generous donations. They are already looking for prizes for 2014 should anyone be able to assist, please contact this event’s organiser Ken Holloway MØSHK via the group’s website www.bittern-dxers.org.uk or contact the Secretary for any further information of future events etc.

U13 Boys’ Hockey team come second in Nationals

The Under 13 Boys’ Hockey team at Gresham’s Prep School in Holt have had a very successful season.

Firstly, they qualified for the National Schools finals by coming runners-up in the East Schools round of the National Hockey Tournament at Redbridge in March. In addition, at the IAPS (Independent Association of Prep Schools) East qualifying tournament, the Under 13 team competed against 20 other schools and went on to qualify as one of only four teams to compete at the IAPS National Finals at Millfield, which took place on Thursday 14 March. The team played some very tough matches, but delivered a high standard of hockey and progressed to the final, where they lost to Chafyn Grove on the ‘golden goal’ rule and so became the runners up in the IAPS Nationals.

Spring is here Give a cheer Spring is here, It’s the prettiest time of the year, Though every day it has been snowing, It hasn’t stopped the snowdrops from showing. Blossom is opening on the trees And I can hear the hum of bees. Primroses and daffodils make a great display, These lovely flowers really brighten my day.

Mark Buckingham, Head of Hockey at the Prep School, said “This is a fantastic result for the team and I am really proud of all the hard work they have put in to make the National IAPS finals!" North Walsham Times 420 April 13th 2013

Two Titles for Walsham at Dramatic Championships

Thirty-eight players battled it out over a duration of ten and a quarter hours as North Walsham Sports Centre played host to the 2013 North Norfolk Championships and with almost a third of the 112 matches played going the distance, there was drama all the way in each of the 8 events. 2009 Open Singles Champion John Batchford lost out to defending champion Robin Thaxter in a four set quarter-final. Tom Baldock-Yaxley beat team-mate Andy Beane in straight before having to dig deep in his quarter-final with Dennis Elliott – BaldockYaxley came back from match-point down in the fourth set of his 11-9, 9-11, 3-11, 12-10, 11-6 win. In the semi, Baldock-Yaxley beat Ray Howe in four as he set up a repeat of last year’s final. It would also be the third straight appearance in the final for Baldock-Yaxley who had yet to win a set and Thaxter won the first 11-4 as the North Walsham player made a nervous start. Thaxter won six straight points from 3-7 in the second, but inspired play from Baldock-Yaxley took the next four as he levelled. As the rallies intensified, a handful of errors at crucial times from Baldock-Yaxley and pieces of luck – such as an edge at set-point in the third – saw Thaxter keep ahead and he took the next two sets 11-9, 11-7 to

conclude a successful defence. The final of the plate for was also settled in four as Andy Marsh won from a set down against Simon Halliday.

In the first round of the Open Doubles, Joe Kirkup and Philip Stone dropped the second set 11-0 to Eric Dolden and John Hall before squandering match-point in the fourth – and then the set on a Stone double-hit. However Kirkup and Stone won the decider and then saved two match-points in the fourth before falling to Elliott and Howe in five in the quarters. Beane and Batchford won the semifinal against Elliott and Howe in four. The first set of the other semi was key as from deuce seven points were won against serve as defending champions Ian Darricott and Thaxter beat Halliday and Price 15-13, 11-3, 11-4. Halliday and Price returned later in the final of the Handicap Doubles where they met Anne Armitage and Alf Greer (+13) who won in straight. It was a case of third time lucky in the finals for Halliday – in the Handicap Singles he met Thaxter. Halliday had a 12 point start and two tense and even sets were shared before Halliday took the decider 21-10. The Open Doubles final also went the distance as Beane and Batchford took a two set lead, before

Darricott and Thaxter needed four chances to take the third and then won six straight points from 4-4 in the fourth. Beane and Batchford regained their composure, led the decider 5-1 and took their fourth championship point to take the second home title of the day.

An epic quarter-final in the Veterans (over 55s) saw both Elliott and Colin Humphries hit outrageous flukes to save match-point against the other – Humphries came from two sets down, saved three match-points and took his sixth to win 18-16 in the fifth. Humphries nearly repeated the trick in the semi – from two sets down he had match-points again but Howe won the fifth 13-11and then had a comfortable final win over John Welsh. Stuart Hook put up a brave fight in the second division singles final, going down to five to Darricott who also won the second division doubles with Terry Lawes. Away from the Championships the big news in the League is that John Hancock’s run of 214 consecutive singles victories has come to an end.
