Roadshow visits Timeline Antiques BBC Televisions popular programme ‘Antiques Road Trip’ recently visited North Walsham’s Timeline Antique Centre to film a piece for a future programme.

Owner Michael Jones welcomed antiques expert James Braxton and a BBC film crew to his centre. James, who had stayed the previous night in Upper Sheringham, had driven over in a converted vintage Citroen 2CV open topped car. He was on the lookout for bargains to be sold later at Gaze & Sons auction establishment in Diss, in the hope of making a profit for charity.

James scoured the centre in the search for bargains and was pleased to find something to satisfy his taste and pocket, before the time honoured ‘haggling’ took place and all parties were happy at the outcome. The BBC hopes to broadcast the finished programme sometime later in the autumn.

Some 30 dealers take space in the Timeline Antiques Centre, located in Midland Road in the town, which opened two years ago this summer, to sell items ranging from furniture to jewellery, ceramics, silver and glass.

England Golf, the national body for amateur golf, awarded the Links GolfMark status, while Sport England, the national body for all sports, has also recognised the Links with its ClubMark award.

Presenting the award, Karen Young of the Norfolk County Golf Partnership said, ‘I am delighted to present the Links with these awards. The club is an ideal venue for juniors and beginners to learn golf and to continue to enjoy playing the game throughout their golfing lives’.

Dominic Dyer, PGA Professional at the Links said ‘GolfMark is further recognition that we are achieving high standards. The club has a very welcoming atmosphere and we must thank our current members for that. They help visitors and new golfers feel at home and help make the club a place where you want to spend time and relax’.

Free catalytic converter marking – North Walsham

Police in North Walsham have teamed up with two garages to offer motorists free catalytic converter marking.

Drivers of 4x4s and vans are being urged to step-up security following an increase in thefts across the county.

Norfolk Constabulary is working in partnership with Trunch Garage and Griffin Auto in a bid to reduce thefts by marking vehicles for free, making it more difficult for offenders to dispose of them at scrap metal sites.

Local beat manager PC Paul Gwyn said: “Catalytic converters are prime targets for thieves because they contain premium metals, platinum and rhodium. Marking converters will make it more difficult for criminals to dispose of.” Drivers can attend the following garages to get their vehicles marked: • Griffin Autos, 30 Mundesley Road, North Walsham, 01692 406272 • Trunch Garage, Chapel Road, Trunch, 01263 721364

To reduce the chances of catalytic converters being stolen, vehicle owners can also: • keep private vehicles in a well-secured garage where possible, and if no garage is available, in a well-lit public area. • park vehicles in such a way as to make access to the catalytic converter difficult or parallel with another vehicle if you own one. • keep commercial vehicles in a locked building or compound. • use alarms, lighting and CCTV to deter thieves.

Groups come together to promote voluntary community car schemes

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb recently brought together community groups, parish councils and local GP practices in an effort to promote hospital transport schemes across the constituency. Brilliant volunteers in some of our local communities organise such schemes for local people to get them to hospital. Can we get more schemes established in other towns and villages?

At a meeting in Cromer just before Easter, the MP highlighted the more than 2,000 journeys made each year by the Holt Caring Society, which has been in operation for more than thirty years. Similar schemes exist in communities across the constituency, including in Ludham, Potter Heigham and Hoveton. Other areas, however, including Cromer, are not covered.

The meeting was intended to provide inspiration, information and advice to people who might be thinking of establishing a similar scheme in their own area.

Commenting, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “I am regularly contacted by constituents having difficulty getting to doctor and hospital appointments. Public transport from rural North Norfolk into Norwich for a

hospital appointment is simply not a realistic option for people. My own mum, who is 94, was New installations and full lucky enough to have the Holt service on all models Caring Society scheme available LPG & NATURAL GAS to help her get to hospital appointments in recent months. It is 5 Year Parts & Labour a fantastic scheme, very simple, Manufacturers’ Warranty on all Boilers very local, but of real practical Boiler Servicing benefit. It is a lifeline for people Friendly local family service like my mum who cannot drive Lyngate Industrial Estate themselves.” Andrew Wilkinson, 10 Douglas Bader Close, North Walsham Business Manager at Holt Tel/fax: 01692 409008 Medical Practice, said “I’m Mob: 07768 625736 indebted to Holt Caring Society and their drivers, and so is the practice as a whole, for the invaluable for local residents. At the meeting fantastic service they provide. I am delighted we heard from groups in Holt, Ludham, Potter to support and endorse the valuable service Heigham, Hoveton and Aylsham about how to the Holt Caring Society provides to our local set up and run a scheme, and the difference it patient community. The meeting was extremely makes to local people. The community car useful and informative for those communities schemes we already have in these villages and hoping to set up similar schemes in North others in North Norfolk show what a difference Norfolk. I just hope the momentum can be a small group of committed people can make. maintained and more schemes are set up in The question now is whether we can extend the future”. and support these brilliant schemes. If you want to discuss the situation in your Commenting further, Norman Lamb said community, or think you could help as a “Similar schemes in other communities are volunteer driver, do get in touch.”

Reepham Festival secures rising roots star for 2013

Reepham 13 Summer Music Festival organisers have secured a prestigious addition to this year’s roster of artists, with the announcement that rising folk-roots star and BBC award-nominated Luke Jackson will be performing over the weekend of 10th and 11th August.

Just eighteen years old but with a bold, show-stopping voice and honed guitar skills, Luke is a confident and captivating performer demonstrating an impressive maturity. He has been making ripples on the thriving acoustic scene supporting such luminaries as Show of Hands, Paul Brady, Steve Knightley, Martyn Joseph and Boo Hewerdine and he has played the prestigious folk and roots festivals at Sidmouth, Bristol, Shrewsbury and Trowbridge.

Championed by the likes of Bob Harris, Simon Mayo and Mike Harding, his debut album ‘More Than Boys’ has received plaudits from critics and airplay on numerous radio stations.

Luke says, looking forward to the August weekend in Reepham, ‘It’s so much fun playing festivals because every one of them has its own vibe and feeling. I am very much looking forward to playing at Reepham Festival this year - let’s hope the sun comes out!’

Reepham festival chairman Steve Jenkins says ‘Each year we aim to provide a wide, eclectic and exciting range of music and entertainment, and 2013 is no exception. We’re really pleased to welcome Luke to Reepham. It’s good to be associated with a rising star and it looks as if this will be a case of ‘remember where you saw him first’!’

Headlining will be masters of rhythm and blues Dr Feelgood, that most perennially popular of the legendary R & B bands. Monster of rock Buster James is back by popular demand and there will be around fifteen hours of music for

all tastes on the Saturday with a full afternoon’s music on the Sunday.

The now-famous twin stage in the main arena minimises the time between bands so that the entertainment continues without a break from mid-day on the Saturday through to the evening. Hot and cold food and drink will be available throughout.

The festival atmosphere continues on the Sunday afternoon when well-known local heritage attraction and festival main sponsor, Reepham and Whitwell Station, hosts the music at the station site.

something to help.’

And once again this year under 15s can enjoy the fun for free when accompanied by a ticket-holding adult. Admission to the Sunday event is free to Saturday ticket holders. Those wishing to make a weekend of it can stay at the festival campsite, which is filling up fast with half the pitches already booked. “Reepham Festival strikes the right balance between a family day out and a marathon treat for music fans’ explained Steve Jenkins. ‘It’s all easily accessible. People don’t have to walk miles from their car to get to the music. It’s a local festival with a big atmosphere and it brings visitors to the town who are often pleasantly surprised by this historic gem in the Norfolk countryside. Now that we’re firmly established on the festival calendar we find we’re getting people travelling from as far as Scotland, Manchester and the West Country. We must be doing something right!’

with new bands and attractions being added all the time. You can also follow updates on Twitter and Facebook. Tickets from 01603 508050 and www.ueaticketbookings.co.uk

As always, the weekend offers something for all the family – and for 2013 the organisers have held tickets at last year’s prices. ‘That was a big decision’ explained Steve Jenkins. ‘People tell us it’s a good value-for-money day out. We never lose sight of the fact that we’re raising funds for local charities and the PLANT HIRE & GROUNDWORKS LTD festival is not run for personal profit Driveways Brickweave but even so, these are difficult times, Patios Slabs financially, for many, Walls Concrete and we felt we could do

Quizmaster Roger Willis has again trawled through his reference books, the internet and other dark places to come up with the questions, ranging from lighthearted subjects like Jasper Carrot (geddit?), to the more esoteric, "ingredients of Welsh Cakes".

Leukaemia Research Fund.

THE JUBILEE PLAYERS - CALENDAR GIRLS The all female cast members of our summer production are hoping that the weather will warm up by June, when they will be performing ‘Calendar Girls’ by Tim Firth, at The Tithe Barn in Horstead.

The play is based on the true story of eleven WI members who posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukaemia Research Fund. When Annie’s husband, John, dies of Leukaemia, she and best friend, Chris resolve to raise money for a new settee in the local hospital waiting room. They man-

age to persuade four other WI members to pose nude with them and news of the women’s charitable venture spreads like wildfire. The calendar is a huge success but the new found fame has unexpected consequences for the women involved.

Based on the film released in 2003, ‘Calendar Girls’ became the fastest selling play in British theatre history when it was first performed in 2008. The amateur performing rights have now been released for a limited period and will raise further funds for The

Council gallery hosts new exhibition

North Norfolk District Council’s public art gallery is presenting a new exhibition featuring photographs from local photographer Guy Metcalf. The exhibition includes many shots from around the north Norfolk coast as well as others from locations around the world. The photographs are in both colour and black and white and demonstrate how various dimensions of light can change an image. Each shot brings the atmosphere to life, making an image peaceful, mystical, striking or minimalist.

Guy is currently studying with the Photography Institute. He’s spent months travelling the world, and yet strongly believes that some of the most beautiful landscapes and views that he has captured are here in north Norfolk. See the region through Guy’s lens, from beautiful sunrises to powerful, evocative images of the North Sea.

NNDC seeks to offer opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit first-floor ‘gallery’ area in its Holt Road offices in Cromer, and in turn provides staff and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of different artists’ work. Currently six exhibitions are held annually, open for view to the public during normal office hours, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 8.30am – 5pm, Wednesday 10am – 5pm, Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm.

Thomas and Friends gifts and souvenirs are also available to buy in the station shops.

Rover tickets give unlimited travel all day. Children under 2 years are free, and children 2 – 15 are just £10. Adult Rovers are £16 (seniors £15), and there’s a Family Rover (2 adults + 2 children or 3 adults + 1 child) at £45. Public pay parking next to Sheringham Station, car park at Holt Station.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

While pregnant mums and mums with kittens are in our care, we give them extra attention. It is important to make sure that the mother cat receives additional food both while pregnant and once the kittens are born, so that she has sufficient milk to feed the kittens to ensure they are healthy and will thrive. As a general rule we are guided by the mother cat as to how much food she needs.

When a pregnant cat comes into care, we always check for fleas and worms and the ideal time to treat her is before she has her kittens. However it is important that we use the correct products as some should not be used and our vets recommend those which are suitable. Because worms are passed to the kittens via the mother’s milk, treating mum while pregnant creates a lesser problem once the kittens are born. Treatment for kittens also depends on their age or weight and the products used. This applies for both flea and worm treatments and, again, some products are not suitable, so veterinary advice is/should always be sought.

We often see kittens offered for homing at 6 weeks old. This is far too young as they have not built up their own immunity. Kittens do on occasion come into care without their mother at this age but they are kept separate from other cats until they have had their first vaccination. Although this does not provide full immunity, it does give them some protection should there be other cats in their new home. If both kittens and mum are still with us when the kittens are nine weeks old, we will get the mum neutered (she may have already started to call again) and also blood tested to ensure she is not FIV or FELV positive. She will then be vaccinated and micro chipped so that she is available for re-homing. Providing the blood test is negative for mum and she is healthy, we can assume the kittens will be too.

Although this is our normal routine, sometimes things do not go as planned. Pregnancy is not always straightforward and there have been occasions when the cat has had to be rushed to the vets for a caesarean (you can guarantee the norm for this is at night when the emergency vet is on duty), which is an expensive operation. The kittens may be in distress as a consequence and very often some do not survive. For poor little mum, very often still just a kitten herself, this is quite likely to be her first experience of motherhood and now safely with us, will thankfully be the last.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number. If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

North Norfolk Social Centre Give before you go An appeal has been raised in the run up to the for the Blind spring bank holidays asking people to consider

With Easter being early this year our meeting fell a few days after Easter so there was no Easter Bonnet contest. It would have been nice just to see all the flowered bonnets so we could have had our own little spring festival as there has been hardly any in the gardens with such cold weather.

This would also account for our drop in members to 45 this month. The raffle cashed in at £46 and our second hand clothing stall made £17. We were entertained by Mandy Martin who came to sing and play the key board for us – she sang a medley of songs including a lot of ‘oldies’ so that members could sing along too.

Although we had a very entertaining afternoon it was met with a very sad start when our chairperson announced that Albert Robson had passed away after a long illness. He had been a club member for 14 years and most of that time he was a committee member. Albert did a wonderful job and we all feel saddened by his recent death. Our thoughts go to his wife Gwen and his family - he will be sadly missed by everyone that knew him.

Next month is our annual spring dinner which will be held at the Scarborough Hill Hotel so there will be no meeting at the Community Centre.

giving blood before they pack up to go on holiday.

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) are requesting that people donate before they travel to help maintain blood stocks throughout the summer.

Nationally 7,000 units of blood are needed every day by hospitals to treat people suffering from a wide range of ailments and injuries. Blood donations are also a vital part of treatment for many conditions including cancer and long term illnesses.

Traditionally, the routine of giving blood can be disrupted during the holiday period as people are planning or enjoying trips away, often overseas.

Certain holiday destinations could potentially increase the risk of travellers getting infections such as Malaria so, although the risk of infection is low, donors are asked to wait for six months after their return, before giving blood. NHS Blood and Transplant would urge donors to give blood before they travel to ensure blood stocks are maintained. Travellers to areas where West Nile Virus is present no longer have to delay donation. As they can be tested following their return, they are able to donate right away. If people are not sure if travel restriction apply to them, or have any questions, they can call 0300 123 23 23 to find out.

Derek Carr , Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHS Blood and Transplant for the Anglia area, said “We would love to see both new and existing donors come down to one of their local sessions in May. We understand that people’s routines change as they start to think about holidays and enjoying time away from their everyday lives to spend with family and friends, but we hope people will consider giving blood before they travel to help keep stocks stable throughout the summer months. Being willing to spare some free time, a couple of times a year, means you can help us to save lives.”

Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7st 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.

Thousands of North Norfolk electricity and gas users set to make savings

Nearly three thousand North Norfolk households will find out in the next couple of weeks how much they could save on their electricity and gas bills, now the initial results of a council-run scheme to use the power of numbers to negotiate reduced household tariffs have been announced. Across the county six local authorities are involved in the ‘Norfolk Big Switch and Save’ scheme. In North Norfolk, where the scheme is run by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), 2,796 households registered with Big Switch and Save, with nearly 12,000 households signing up across the county as a whole. On 8 April, at the end of the registration period, energy companies in the UK were asked to take part in a ‘reverse auction’ and submit their lowest offers, the best of which would then be offered to all those who registered to see whether they could get a better deal. The auction was a great success, with three companies, Sainsbury’s Energy, Scottish Power and British Gas winning in three different categories – dual fuel, electricity only, and prepayment meter customers. Overall, 71% of the people who registered could make a saving on their annual electricity and gas bills by switching to one of the offers, with an average saving of £111. The highest average saving would be £139 for Dual Fuel customers opting for online billing. John Lee, NNDC Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said, “A lot of hard-pressed residents of North Norfolk could soon be in for some really good news. Energy prices have gone through the roof recently and I am very pleased that the council has been able to find a way of reducing the burden for quite a few of them.” Households will be contacted over the next couple of weeks with their own specific offer. They are under no obligation to switch supplier after receiving the offer, meaning that those customers not offered a saving through the scheme can be reassured that they are already on the best deal for them. And all is not lost for those who missed the opportunity this time round, as NNDC is hoping to run the scheme again later in the year.

North Walsham Rocks for Nelson’s Journey

North Walsham Live Aid Rock Concert was helped this year with superb promotion from local publications, free guitars from PMT Music in Norwich and free advertising banners from East Coast Plastics as well as the continued support from local businesses.

The concert held at North Walsham Community Centre on Saturday 6 April was a huge success raising £4,750 for the Norwich based charity Nelson’s Journey.

The top priced item was a Brian May, red special signed guitar which after a long battle was won by Billy Batchelor at £1,200.

set of professionally played and well interpreted classic rock covers.

The impressive lighting and sound was supplied by ‘Rhythmic Sound and Light’ as usual supplied and operated by ‘Titch’.

Over 40 lots went under the hammer wielded as usual by Charles Horner-Glister, raising around £2,800 towards the total for the 2013 designated charity.

All bands and the sound and light operator worked without charge giving up their time for the charity event.

Once again the town traders played their part with dozens of raffle prizes and assistance in other ways, all of whom will shortly be listed along with photos of the event on the website www.northwalshamliveaid.co.uk

The evening kicked off with a thundering modern rock set from ‘Kamikaze Radio’ which was followed by a new addition to the evening, two short sets of traditional English folk music from ‘Cruel Folk’ on the acoustic stage during the band changeovers.

Top Norwich band ‘The Floating Greyhounds’ took the stage next and were followed by local favourites ‘Raw Edge’, both bands treating the near capacity crowd to a brilliant selection of classic rock covers.

As the smoke cleared, the lights came up for the Memorabilia Auction, a collection of guitars, photos etc signed and donated by legendary rock stars plus several other interesting lots, including a framed signed photo from Sir Stirling Moss which raised £170.

Following the auction Norwich based band ‘No Mercy’, on their first visit to Live Aid, introduced the audience to a well presented set of powerful rock numbers.

The final band, also on their first visit, were Great Yarmouth based band ‘Blindside’ who impressed the crowd with a brilliant and varied

Organiser Barry Holden would like to thank everyone for their support – bands, local traders and helpers on the night and is looking forward to planning next year’s event for 19 April 2014.

As a final point it is sad that the District Council decided to send a traffic warden to check for parking tickets this particular night when a lot of people coming to support this charity event, including many people giving up their time for free, did not realise the car park charges applied after 6pm. Luckily we were able to warn most people - we just hope that no-one was caught out.

Taste and See

At our next meeting at Liaison on Tuesday 7 May at 2.30pm our topic will be ‘The Bible – Fact or Fiction’.

The Bible is a history book with a difference because it is an instruction manual for us (every gizmo/apparatus that we buy comes with an instruction manual so why not us!). Do you look at your instructions before you use, or like me afterwards when I’ve made a complete mess of things, a bit like my life really and perhaps like yours too!

There are more than 100 million Bibles sold each year throughout the world. Why the interest? What makes this book so special? Do you own one? Do you read it? Today’s versions make it easier to understand.

Join us for refreshments at Liaisons as we take a brief look at this amazing book. We look forward to seeing you.

SUPPORTED LIVING SERVICES LEARNING DISABILITIES (NORTH WALSHAM, HOLT & FAKENHAM) We are looking for people that are positive, flexible, friendly, reliable, trustworthy and committed. Community Support Workers – previous experience not essential as we provide comprehensive training packages.

A Historical "Tail"

In 1087 William 11 succeeded to the English throne and was more commonly known as Rufus the Red due to his ginger hair. He was a keen huntsman and was always accompanied by a number of greyhounds.

Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders have a ginger brindle greyhound called Rufus who is looking to rule a home, using the sofa as his throne. He will celebrate his sixth birthday in June, is not bothered about hunting, is an easy going, laid back sort of a fellow and loves to be with and around people of all ages. Rufus has a lovely white face and very endearing eyes, he makes friends easily and is much loved by our volunteers. He has a regal air about him and will certainly be loyal to his subjects... sorry I mean to his new owners.

If you would like to meet Rufus, get more information or arrange a home check, contact Homefinding Co-ordinator David Jones (Beeston Regis) through the Homefinders local rate call number 0845 458 3797.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER AN ELECTRIFIED DANDELION

Investigating so tough that it multiplies where many other a flash of daffodils can’t even survive. It evidently never yellow on gets basal rot but does sometimes produce seed a vacant pods and any seeds may germinate in grassy building plot areas and produce new clumps. I found a What makes identification difficult is that it clump of is so variable. It has been quite accurately unusual, described as a fairly mad and electrified seemingly dandelion. It is said that cattle never eat it malformed rodents and that leave it alone which probably daffodils. explains how it has survived the local muntjac Looking deer. through old bulb The first spring after the bulbs are bought from catalogues a supplier they will bloom with all the doubling I found one neatly contained within the trumpet. But that photograph is the first spring and every year after that the that gave me same bulbs will produce quite different blooms a possible – shaggy powder -puffs with no sign of a identification trumpet and in some years or some gardens and some research on the internet confirmed they will be heavily marked with green or they that the variety I had found was Narcissus will open gnarled or imperfect. They may be ‘Van Sion’, also known as ‘Telamonious weirdly charming but they are not the sort of Plenus’. One American website stated ‘When bloom most people would want to see in their people ask us to identify a double daffodil they well kept flower beds. have found in an old garden, a vacant lot, or way out in the middle of nowhere, it most often E.A.Bowles, the famous gardener wrote about this daffodil in 1934 ‘Its first appearance in turns out to be ‘Van Sion’’. It seems that this England is first chronicled by Parkinson who daffodil has been around for centuries and it is

tells us in the Paradisus that Vincent Sion, ‘borne in Flanders, dwelling on the Bank side (London) in his lives time but now dead, an industrious and worthy lover of faire flowers cherished it in his garden for many years without the bearing of any flowers until the year 1620’. Another gardener A.M.Kirby wrote in 1907 that ‘it is not only the most important of all doubles, but probably the most important of all varieties, single or double’. This variety has been used, especially in New Zealand, for breeding many of the double varieties we buy today.

So here we have growing on a site in Sheringham, soon to be developed, one of the most historically important and unusual daffodils. Hopefully it will survive the builders and pop up in future years to surprise the new householders.

The new bulb catalogues are arriving now, so make a note of any narcissi you want for next year and get the orders off nice and early. There are certainly plenty to choose, from the historical varieties such as Van Sion at £1 a bulb right up to this year’s modern show quality daffodils which can cost over £25 a bulb. Bob Wilkinson

Vodafone to pay compensation

Compensation for Vodafone customers Norman Lamb has received confirmation from Vodafone that compensation will be paid to customers who have suffered serious inconvenience following poor coverage in the Sheringham, Mundesley, Aylsham, Cromer and North

Walsham areas. Commenting, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “I am pleased to hear that Vodafone will be compensating customers and strongly feel that it is the right thing for them to do. Paying customers rightly expect a certain level

of service, and if that isn’t delivered then it is only right that they should be reimbursed. Vodafone have confirmed to me that they will look at each case individually and reimburse customers depending on their situation and how they were affected.”

Waitrose North Walsham presented a cheque for £260 to Mundesley Under 13s Football Club earlier this month as part of their 'Community Matters' scheme. Andy Wicks, coach to the boys said "This money is most welcome as the boys need to some extra kit and it will help to provide warm up jackets" Each month Waitrose provides £1000 that is split between three causes and customers 'vote' for their preferred choice by placing a token in the box. The picture shows Kevin Woolstenholmes of Waitrose presenting the cheque to Andy Wicks and the team.

North Walsham Times 421 April 27th 2013

Good Companions Club is 65 Years Old The Good Companions Club for the ‘young at heart’ celebrated its 65th birthday with a lunch at the Community Centre in North Walsham. Guests of honour were Dave Robertson, Mayor of North Walsham and the Den Barry Duo. Catering was by About with Friends and an excellent three course lunch was served. The Club was founded by Roy Ingham, the then Welfare Officer of North Walsham, and was originally started for the benefit of the elderly who had nowhere to meet in 1948 after World War II. Newspaper reporter Mr. Harmer also helped with the forming of the club. It started small and was held at the church rooms on the corner of Hall Lane, now the music shop.

The Club was supported by the town’s businesses and all the churches. It grew rapidly and when the new Community Centre was built, it needed to change its venue to accommodate the growing number of members.

Over the 65 years it has had several chairmen and committee members - the current Chairman is Mrs Peggy Fuller who is well known around the town. She has held the club together for some 12 years and made it what it is today - a happy caring club.

Unfortunately over the years membership has diminished as has the support of local businesses it is appreciated that the current climate is probably to blame.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon I am pleased to announce that we have created a new Taster Menu which will be available in The Barn Restaurant every Thursday - Saturday evening for the coming months. Our full restaurant menu is also available as is our Children’s Menu and super bar snacks so the choice is yours. As with all out dishes we have sourced as many of the ingredients as possible from our local suppliers and continue to insist on the very best quality fish, meat and vegetables that we can find. With the promise of warmer weather on the way we are expecting our garden and children’s play area to be in more demand particularly with younger families giving Mum and Dad the chance to enjoy eating ‘Alfresco'; while the children play.

The Easter holiday was a busy period for the pub and we would like to thank all our customer old and new for paying us a visit. Full details of our new Taster Menu can be found on our web site www.whitehorseoverstrand.co.uk

NATHAN’S RECIPE FOR LEMON SOUFFLé

Ingredients Knob of Butter 4 Medium Egg Whites 50gm Caster Sugar, plus extra for coating 8 Tablespoons ready-made Custard Finely grated Zest and Juice of two Lemons 2 Egg Yolks Icing Sugar for dusting, Enough for four 4” soufflé ramekins. Top tip: Use old cups if you haven’t got ramekins.

Every week there is something different - a full programme of events is available. There are many clubs in the town that cater for people’s needs and do an excellent job, but the Good Companions Club is the oldest club in the town, if not in North Norfolk. It is a happy club that cares for its members and enjoys a laugh because, as we are told, laughter is the best medicine.

Why not come along and give us a try - have a cup of tea and form your own opinion. The Club meets every Friday at the Community Centre in North Walsham from 1.30pm to 4pm. We invite you to join us and share with us the fun of being a happy pensioner. For more information please contact Beth Buchanan on 01692 501044, Peggy Fuller on 01692 402815 or Eric Newson on 01692 402641.

Method Heat the oven to 220 o C. Grease the ramekins with Butter then a layer of Caster Sugar to the top of the ramekins.

Whisk the Eggs Whites and Sugar until soft peaks appear. The tips of the peaks should flip over not stand up.

Mix the Custard with the Lemon Zest, Juice, and Egg Yolk. Fold the Egg Whites in to the Custard mix little by little. Place the mixture in the ramekins filling just below the rim and bake for 9-10 mins.

Remove from oven and dust with Icing Sugar. Great served with Strawberry Jam or a Spring Fruit Compote.

Cromer Carnival Confirms Aerial Acts for Carnival Day Cromer Carnival committee have confirmed the aerial acts that will wow crowds at this year’s Carnival Day on Wednesday 21 August.

The Carnival will welcome not one but three aerial displays.

The mighty Blades Aerobatic Display Team and the Wildcat Aerobatics Team will be joined by The Princess of Wales Parachute Display Team – The Tigers.

The announcement comes after the disappointing news that the Red Arrows will not be appearing at this year’s Carnival.

The Blades are amongst the most experienced display pilots in the UK and all are former RAF fast-jet pilots and all are former Red Arrows. Their air display is renowned world-wide and audiences will be treated to a 15 minute, jaw-dropping sequence of over 30 separate manoeuvres.

In the skies on Carnival day visitors will also see the spectacular Wildcat Aerobatics in their iconic biplanes. The Wildcats are East Anglia’s

premier formation aerobatic display team and deliver a crowd-thrilling formation spectacular that encapsulates both close-formation aerobatics and synchronized pairs flying.

Carnival Day will also see the return of The Tigers Parachute Display Team for Cromer. Dropping into the arena, smoke trailing, flags flying they will be performing several amazing formations both in the air and under the parachute.

Carnival Chairman Tony Shipp said “We are delighted that crowds at this year’s Carnival will be treated to three aerial displays on Carnival Day.”

He added “Since hearing the disappointing news about not getting the Red Arrows members of the Carnival Committee have worked hard to secure these very exciting aerial displays. Both the Wildcats and the Blades are well known for their displays at many of the country's top air shows and will

Sheringham Little Theatre is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Youth Outreach Programme this year.

The scheme, which has supported dozens of youngsters, who have gone on to carve out careers for themselves in the theatre, was launched in 2003 and includes classes in both Sheringham and North Walsham.

Youth outreach manager Bridget Robinson, who has overseen the programme from the beginning, said participants had gone on to win places at drama school and to take up jobs in theatre, television and film.

“We work on performance skills in our classes and so the sessions are ideal for those with an interest in theatre or acting, and who perhaps want to take it further. They offer a pathway to all sorts of opportunities later in life,” she said. But, she added: “The classes are also great fun and are confidence-building for those who just enjoy taking part.”

This year has seen youngsters from the outreach programme win roles in Sheringham Little Theatre’s community production of Annie. Some are also starring in The Guffin, which is part of the National Theatre’s Connections Festival, and could end up being staged at the theatre in London.

The classes focus on stage skills, drama and dance for young people aged four to 16, giving them a chance to gain nationally recognised qualifications and step out on stage at a professional venue.

“These classes run by Sheringham Little Theatre are exceptional in that they give the children the chance to appear within a real, working theatre,” she said.

“Furthermore, every year, we are swamped with applications from Year 10 pupils looking for work experience at the theatre. As we cannot accept them all, we do give priority to those in our classes.”

Shortthorn’s

be an exciting alternative to the Red Arrows. They will be a great enhancement to the arena programme we already have booked for Carnival Day.”

Carnival Day will offer crowds not only thrills in the air but thrills on the ground too with acts in the arena confirmed as Woodforde’s Dray, The White Helmets Motorbike Display Team, Romford Drum & Trumpet Corp, West Lancs. Dog Display Team and Out on a Wing Falconry.

The Carnival has also released the dates for this year’s Royal Family competitions.

The Miss Cromer and Senior Attendant Competition will take place on Friday 3 May at 7.30pm at The Cliftonville Hotel. The Junior Attendants competition will take place on Friday 24 May at 7pm at The Cottage in Cromer. The Prince and Princess competition will take place on Sunday 26 May at 3pm at the Community Hall. Hour-long classes are run at the Sheringham theatre on Monday evenings and at North Walsham High School on Thursdays. Sessions are held at different times for different age groups.

Recent success stories include the likes of Ryan Howes, who is about to graduate from renowned drama school Rose Bruford College, and has parts in this year’s professional summer rep at Sheringham.

“We are very proud of what our young people achieve – we have seen many of them grow and develop with us over the years,” said Bridget.

“We look forward to continuing to work with them for another 10 years and to watch many more go on to achieve great things.”

For more information on the Youth Outreach Programme at Sheringham Little Theatre or North Walsham High call 01263 822117 or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com.

Dear Margaret

I would like to let all the good people of Norfolk know that there are still people out there who care.

In August 2012 we accepted an offer on our property which was in the hands of Arnold Keys of Cromer and was given all the help that was required.

In October of the same year our buyers pulled out a few days before exchange, leaving us out of pocket and very, very angry.

We are now in April 2013 and we have now SSTC again and I firmly believe that this time it will be OK.

The confidence to continue with this very stressful situation has been down to the support we have received from the following people:

• Kelly Moran of Arnold Keys Cromer (now to be working with Watsons of Sheringham) - we will miss her, but i am sure Emma will take care of us.

• Michelle Hann (W.H. Brown Cromer) who arranged our mortgage for our new property in Sheringham.

• and Sue Seal-Coon of Hansells Solicitors North Walsham.

Both my husband and I could not have come back from the brink without the help we received from those people. We certainly had help from family and friends but help from the sources involved with conveyancing was invaluable. Yours sincerely

Dear Margaret

Unfortunately, I have to agree with the Grumpy Old Man re charities.

I really am sick and tired of all the appeals on TV - there are two charities I support - Arthritis Care and Kitalie (orphans in Uganda) I know where I want my money to go - I have SLE - hence Arthritis Care.

If you read the blurb on charity bags, a lot say that things will be sold at low prices to those who need them. I only put stuff in bags for recognised charities. I have a notice on the door, saying 'No Charity Bags - it just gets ignored. The same as double glazing salesmen - the double glazing was done a couple of years ago. I ended up sending a recorded delivery letter to the Managing Director of Everest, saying that if I wanted double glazing, I would ask for a number of quotes - I wouldn't just buy from someone who turned up on the doorstep - especially when their shirt was untucked and their breakfast egg was down their shirt front and that they could take us off their database and that any further communication would be considered as harrassment. We are bombarded with appeals - I am unemployed and on a very small pension, hence I am very careful about committing myself to any regular payment. I hate being approached in the street for charity - 'only £4 a month.' I explain very carefully that I am a pensioner on a very small pension and that I can not commit to a monthly direct debit. No one has ever done anything to help me - I've paid tax for who knows how many years and no one wants to help me. I have managed all these years - and no doubt I will continue to manage. I think charity ought to begin at home. Why are we sending all this money abroad? There are plenty of deserving causes here.

Why do we think we have the right to interfere with another countries rules and politics? Their ways may not be the same as ours - but that is their choice. If I go to another Islamic country I have to obey their rules - including veils and no alcohol.

I have to obey their rules - so why, when they come over here, do they expect us to follow their rules?

NWSCA Win League as Hancock Suffers Second Defeat

NWSCA have won the first division of the North Norfolk League following an 8-2 win against Outlaws. The team of Andy Beane, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and John Batchford hosted Colin Humphries, Steve Patterson and John Hancock (Jnr) at Antingham Village Hall. It turns out Hancock’s defeats in the League are a bit like buses – you wait for ages (214 matches) and then two turn up at once. Former North Norfolk champion John Batchford has always pushed Hancock close before and this time it was his turn to prevail. Batchford won the important moments to always keep ahead as he triumphed 11-5, 9-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-8. Hancock still took a brace – strong starts seeing him to two wins in straight. However only three more sets were dropped by the NWSCA trio – Patterson taking one from both

Baldock-Yaxley and Batchford plus one in the doubles – as they won 8-2 to seal the League Crown.

The issue of the runners-up spot in the second division has now been settled - both Poachers and Barracudas were level on points with their last game to play. The Poachers trio of David Thompson, Alan Rutledge and John Hancock (Snr) visited NWSCC who with the luxury of a game in hand also had a shout but needed two large wins. The hosts were represented by Chris Johnson, Toby Usher and Stuart Hook (playing up).Usher took a brace, winning a battle of excellent hitting and counter-hitting from both players against Thompson 12-10, 10-12, 12-14, 11-8, 11-2 and edging out Rutledge 13-11 in the fourth. However these

NEW VIEWS ON NORFOLK

Seven sought-after artists, known internationally for their work as illustrators in the world of media, express their personal love of Norfolk in an exhibition opening on April 13th at The Gallery Norfolk in Church Street, Cromer.

childhood holidays in North Norfolk and all the charm and confidence of her style is captured in a colourful view of Cromer’s seafront that has proved one of The Gallery Norfolk’s most popular prints. Chris Wormell,

The exhibition of some 30 works – nearly all them specially produced for the exhibition – exemplifies the vibrancy, energy and eclecticism that has become The Gallery Norfolk’s trademark since it opened in summer 2012. With limited edition prints, drawings, watercolours and wood engravings (and prices starting at under £100) the exhibition offers accessible, exciting work – both originals and limited editions – by established names.

All the artists have connections with Norfolk and two of them live in the county: Paul Bommer recently moved to Cromer from London, and his screen prints unite an irreverent sense of humour with a rich sense of time and place; Toby Morison, admired for his fluent, evocative drawings and watercolours, made a trailblazing career in London and New York before returning to live and work in Norfolk, where he grew up.

Londoner Sarah McMenemy spent her

the distinguished wood-engraver, is celebrated in East Anglia for his serenely powerful imagery for the Southwold brewery Adnams; the exhibition will feature his engravings for The Story of a Norfolk Farm, written by Henry Williamson, author of Tarka the Otter.

Tom Frost’s parents live in North Norfolk, but he is based on the other side of the country, in

were the only two points that NWSCC picked up as Thompson won his remaining games with no more sets dropped and Rutledge beat Hook in straight and Johnson in four. Hancock was on top form taking a maximum with two wins in four and a tight 11-7, 6-11, 11-9, 11-13, 14-12 victory over Johnson. The doubles concluded an 8-2 win for Poachers which Barracudas needed to better and they did as a10-0 win over Dropshots saw them finish two points ahead of Poachers to claim the final promotion spot. Finally NWSCB beat NWSCA 5-1 in the semifinal of the Handicap Singles Cup. It could be an all Walsham final – but NWSCD face a very tough semi away to Gresham’s School.

Bristol, where he produces bold, witty retro iconography that often adapts motifs from old posters and packaging; Julia McKenzie – based in South London, but a frequent visitor to Norfolk, where she has close friends who are also artists – creates intricate images that transform motifs from nature, sometimes combining them with elements from maps; Andy Lovell, who makes his home in land-bound Gloucestershire, but enjoys making frequent visits to Norfolk, produces evocative, subtly-hued prints that, in the artist’s words “are distilled from paintings and drawings done on location, imprinting a memory of mood, form and place”.

Polly Miller, who owns and runs The Gallery Norfolk, has an established relationship with all these artists and feels that visitors to the exhibition will immediately appreciate the way each piece captures the essence of the county. “People who live here or who visit Cromer and the surrounding area love to ‘buy local’,” she says, “and that passion extends from locally sourced produce to prints, paintings and objects produced by artists who draw inspiration from Norfolk’s landscape and atmosphere. This exhibition brings together the work of seven people who each express the spirit of Norfolk in a very distinctive – and sometimes idiosyncratic – way.”

NORTH WALSHAM PHOTOGRAPHIC GROUP

North Walsham Photographic Group is the new name of the North Walsham & District Camera Club. The name change is to recognise that photographs (digital images) can be made not only with a camera but also with a mobile phone or tablet computer and probably even a wristwatch in the not so distant future.

Our meetings have moved to the Annexe Business Centre at the Atrium, Spenser Avenue, North Walsham. The first meeting held there on Tuesday 2nd April was very well attended and was a digital presentation by local naturalist Peter Ransome, who showed us stunning images of a huge variety of ‘Nature on the Doorstep’. NWPG meets Tuesday The 29th annual photographic exhibition of members’ work will also be held in the light, spacious gallery of the Atrium on 20th – 26th August.

New members and new ideas are always welcome.

North Walsham Market Cross WI

Great Yarmouth’s bygone fishing industry was the subject of a talk for our April meeting brought to life by our speaker Mr Simon Partridge.

The fishing industry made Great Yarmouth very wealthy due to the taxes collected. It was a short season September to December during which the fisher girls mostly from Scotland would descend into Great Yarmouth to gut and pack the fish. They worked and played hard which was welcomed by both the local inns and local men! After WW2 the fishing industry declined, the Russian market disappeared and a fantastic protein omega 3 rich food is now unknown to many.

Joan gave an interesting and humorous account of her day at the recent WI Norfolk Federation Meeting held on 26 March Tins are now being collected for a fun day in June, and also Joan has a bulb list if any member is interested.

Future trips are being planned to Blickling House and also to our very own Suffield House.

Margaret Bain has asked for new members for both the darts and bowling groups - no experience is necessary. Our next meeting is on 8 May and the competition is ‘a flower from your garden’.

A warm welcome is waiting for any new members - why not come along and join us. Our meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7.15pm at St Benet Hall, Vicarage Street, North Walsham. For membership information please contact Mrs Kim Reynolds on 01692 406246.
