Kingfisher’s Got Talent Recently Kingfisher Kids Club have been holding

auditions for Kingfisher’s Got Talent.

Over the week 26 children auditioned for the winning spot.

The acts included acting as teachers, gym, dancing in groups, singing, comedy, “The Gunna & Jane Show” impressions to name but a few. The children were judged by the children attending on that day for crowd appeal and members of staff judged for timing, clear language, presentation, originality, creativity and eye contact.

Each act could achieve up to 60 points for their audition.

As part of our planning the children choose what theme they want on a weekly basis and we work with their ideas to make the idea suitable for all children who want to join in. The children choose dancing and to make it far it was suggested that by having a talent show, all children could join in and express themselves in a way in which they were most comfortable. So … Kingfisher’s Got Talent.

The photo shows the winners who achieved 52 points for their Dancing entry. Each of the winners received a certificate and large tube of Smarties, all runners up received a treat for their contributions. Well done everyone.

NWSCD Battle Back to Reach Handicap Final

In the Handicap Singles Cup, Gresham School’s Robin Thaxter (A), Hubert Cheng (F) and Ian Darricott (F) hosted NWSCD’s Mary Sawyer (G), Joe Kirkup (I) and Philip Stone (F). In a repeat of the handicap semi-final from the recent Championships, Thaxter was again very consistent against Stone (+10) as he won in straight. After edging an even first set against Sawyer (+2) 21-19. Cheng was in control of the second as the School moved 2-0 up. A strong performance from Kirkup (+6) saw him attack at the right times to beat Darricott 21-10, 21-14. Cheng (+0) beat Stone 21-19, 21-16 before Kirkup (+13) took his fourth match-point to defeat Thaxter 21-15 in both sets. Darricott then edged out Sawyer (+2) 21-20 in the second as the School moved one win away from booking their spot in the final as they led 4-2. Despite Cheng levelling at 10-10 in the first against Kirkup (+6), the NWSCD player won the first 21-14. Kirkup led the second 17-13 only to be denied by a winning Cheng serve on the 20-20 point. Kirkup raced into a 12-0 lead in the decider which was good enough as he won the set 21-9 to keep NWSCD alive. Stone (+0) then played well to defeat Darricott 21-12, 21-20 to set up a deciding match between Sawyer (+11) and Thaxter. And it was Sawyer who completed NWSCD’s comeback as she won an understandably tense battle 21-16, 16-21, 21-16 to seal a 5-4 victory and set up a derby final against NWSCB.

Following last year’s first Inter-League match for over three decades, the Hansells Trophy has expanded this year from two Leagues to eight meaning that all of the major Leagues in the area are included. With the eight Leagues drawn into a Knockout format it was a little ironic that the two teams from last year’s inaugural match should be drawn against each other but so it was that North Walsham Sports Centre was the venue as the North Norfolk League hosted Dereham. Three tables saw players from the League’s respective first and second divisions and

junior ranks battle it out with the combined result determining which League made the semi-final. Six North Walsham players were involved – with Tom Baldock-Yaxley, John Batchford and Andy Beane all in action on the first division table. Batchford won from two sets down against both of Dereham’s Howard Lupton and Wayne Lubbock and also forced a decider against Steve Barrett but this time was denied the triple comeback. Dereham won this table 7-2. The three juniors representing North Norfolk were all from North Walsham’s ranks – Joe Kirkup, Stuart Hook and James Morton. A couple of missed serves arrived at the cruellest time for Hook – one long off the table at match-point up 11-10 in the fifth against Matt Leggett and another into the net at match-point down 11-12 to hand away victory on the Dereham player’s second chance. Kirkup beat Leggett in straight but Dereham won this table 8-1. And with the second division table finishing 7-2 in their favour, overall Dereham won 22-5.

Poppies Nursery Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Sue and Debbie have been running Poppies Nursery in North Walsham for 25 years.

‘It seems amazing to think it is that long since we were in the North Norfolk News with our friend Sheila, asking if anyone had premises which we could use for a nursery. We were offered the Pavilion on the War Memorial Park which was virtually derelict and we have ‘grown’ from there.’ said Sue.

‘Our wish to provide somewhere that was both ‘home from home’ and an exciting learning environment has kept us enthusiastic’ she continues. ‘This year has also been a landmark as some of the nursery’s first babies have returned as mums to leave their own babies!’

‘Over the years we have had the privilege of caring for more than 500 babies and young children and have got to know many local families.

We are celebrating our anniversary by developing a new garden area for the children to grow more vegetables and for the babies to have their own area. Of course this involves more fundraising and, thanks to the band ‘Acaysha’ and the Lighthouse Pub, we are having a ceilidh dance on 8 June (adults and children 14 +) tickets £5, available from the nursery Tel 01692 500117. Everyone is welcome, especially ‘old Poppies friends’!

DO YOU KNOW YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE?

‘Know your blood pressure’ is one on the recent slogans of the Stroke Association and last month Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club together with many other Rotary Clubs across the country, cooperated with the Association to organise a ‘Know Your Blood Pressure Day’. Almost 100 members of the public stepped into Cromer’s Community Centre (WI Hall) to take advantage of the service – 57% more than the last time a few years ago.

Surprisingly, 43% were recommended to have a routine follow-up test within a month because of moderately raised blood pressure and 7% were urged to have a follow-up within a week – three due to low blood pressure and four due to severe hypertension.

“The results demonstrate the value of routine blood pressure testing”, said Rotarian Donald Mayes, a retired pharmacist formerly with Lloyds who organised the day. “Hopefully, we have been able to a number of people identify warning signs at an early stage.”

If you missed it you have another chance to see it at Cromer Library (date to be arranged) and Brian will be heading up another folk afternoon at North Walsham Library later in the year.

NNR Receives Grant

The North Norfolk Railway has received £99,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) towards its project “The Railways and the Suburbs”, which focuses on the impact which the railways had on the development of the London suburbs.

It will include an exhibition to enable visitors to learn about how the railways influenced the growth of the suburbs, and about the technologies involved in the design of locomotives and carriages specifically for suburban commuting.

North Norfolk Railway already operates a substantial education programme involving local schools. This project will add significantly to its existing geography, history and science elements, and will also give volunteers the chance to experience the two extremes of preservation: hands-on restoration and the management of

a major scheme.

The project includes the restoration of two carriages introduced for suburban travel. These will complement vehicles already on the railway and allow visitors to travel on three generations of suburban trains dating from the ’20s to the ’60s.

North Norfolk Railway chairman Clive Morris said: “We are thrilled to have received the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, and are confident that the project will further the public’s understanding of a vital aspect of everyday life for millions.”

Car Park fire damages Signal Box

Photo courtesy Alan Reeves of Sparks Electrical Supplies

On Monday 21st April, a fire believed to have started in a parked car in the Station car park, damaged at least two other vehicles as well as the 106 year old signal box. At the end of last year the box had been moved ready for refurbishment, which had begun only a few days previously.

East Coast Motors sponsorship Deal Continues

Cromer’s Pavilion Theatre is delighted to announce the continued sponsorship deal between themselves and East Coast Motors in Cromer.

Rory Holborn, Director of Openwide said ‘I am delighted that this excellent example of partnerships between local businesses is continuing for yet another year’

No-one was hurt in the incident, which included the carpenter who was working on the other side of the box.

North Norfolk Railway’s General Manager Trevor Eady commented, “I am relieved that there were no injuries from the incident. It appears that the damage to the signal box is superficial and not structural. On the side facing the car park we had already done some of the restoration work, but we will as always overcome the problem and continue with the work.

This has not damaged any other railway property apart from the fence, which has already been repaired. The NNR will continue as normal, with no interruption to one of North Norfolk’s busiest attractions.”

Celebrating Success! Staff and pupils at St. Nicholas House School in North Walsham have recently been celebrating their successful Independent Schools Inspection.

For over sixty years this happy, busy, little school has provided high quality education for local children and the inspection report has officially recognised this achievement, saying that “The school is successful in meeting its aims to support the abilities, personal qualities and talents of each pupil” and “Parents are overwhelmingly supportive of the school and delighted with their children’s progress.”

Of the staff the report says that “Teachers are knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their subjects.” And that “Pupils personal development is excellent across all age groups… they have exemplary manners and behaviour, both towards adults and each other.”

confirmed what we have known for the 60 years the school has been open - that we offer the children a stimulating curriculum in a caring and nurturing environment.”

The school offers nursery and day prep education for ages two to 11 with before and after school care available. Pupils benefit from the small classes and a wide and varied curriculum with numerous extra-curricular activities available, including speech and drama, music and sport.

A reflection of the school’s success is that many of the children go on to obtain places at the County’s top secondary schools. As the report says, the school provides “a wonderful tapestry of opportunities.”

Head Teacher, Craig Wardle, said that “It is most reassuring that the inspection report

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

As we have mentioned in the past, all cats and kittens that come into our care visit the vets for a health check before they can be offered for adoption. As can be appreciated not all cats arrive in the best of health or condition and some may require treatment which can be ongoing, others may require an operation. For those which have/have had had a significant problem our vets will complete a Medical Summary Form. As well as showing the history of treatment for neutering and blood tests it outlines the condition treated, whether it is currently ongoing or resolved and also the likelihood or not of the condition recurring. A copy of this form is given to the new owner when the cat is re-homed. They can share this information with their vet and may be asked for it if insuring their pet.

Although we may occasionally offer help for treatment where a cat has a significant problem (e.g. diabetes, thyroid) once it has been re-homed, it is the responsibility of the new owner to pay for any future treatment. We would obviously like to help more but unfortunately our resources are such we cannot afford to do this. Generally speaking most cats that

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station

Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station has received a boost to its funds. Ian Ritchie Captain of Mundesley Golf Club 2012 visited the station last month to present the crew with a cheque for £1,000.

As Captain of Mundesley Golf Club he nominated the charity to be supported, through the Community Golf events held throughout the year. These raised the fantastic sum, which was presented to the crew following the Sunday morning exercise.

leave our care have had their problems resolved before they leave and no further treatment will be required. On the rare occasion when a cat leaves us which may require treatment in the future thesituation is explained to the new owner to ensure they appreciate the situation.

It is fortunate for Stephanie that most people are now aware of the special number to ring to obtain help with Frankie neutering costs as the “cat phone” has been extremely busy lately with people ringing to offer new homes to the cats in care. We have already re-homed more than 70 this year. Phone calls to vets, fosterers, potential new owners and people with problems take up on average nearly two hours each day (this is just the calls she makes and does not include those she receives) so please be patient if you are waiting for her to call you. As the cats are not all in one location it is also necessary to ring to find out where individual cats are.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

VACCINATION AMNESTY

Ian joined the crew on board the station’s Atlantic 75 Douglas Paley after it returned to station. He was shown over the boat before handing the cheque to the helmsman Tony Phenix and crew Alex Willoughby and Dave Cato.

The Grove Opens New Rooms

One of Cromer’s oldest family firms is looking forward to the summer season with optimism.

The Grove on Overstrand Road hit the headlines in 2012 with the launch of a restaurant complimenting the ten bedroom Georgian summer home, and last winter saw yet more expansion – this time new accommodation nestled in the four acres of woodland grounds.

The Orchard Rooms are five timberframed, custom built guest rooms built on what was part of the Grove’s vegetable garden and framed by a small copse of trees. They were designed by Rob McVicar of A2 Architects in Norwich, built by Norfolk Post and Beam and ND Willan and encompassed a whole range of local Cromer businesses in their outfitting and finishing.

Partner Richard Graveling is delighted with the results. “We’d been looking at increasing room capacity for some time but at the same time were reluctant to extend the house itself which could have dramatically altered the setting. We also get lots of enquiries for ground-floor accommodation, and these new rooms are all suitable for people unable to manage stairs. We’re lucky enough to have decent-sized grounds and there was a perfect spot at the end of the garden in which to build.

“The timber-framed design was put in place deliberately to keep the build time down and make sure we were open for Easter, and Norfolk Post and Beam did a great job. I must say they look absolutely wonderful and we are extremely pleased and proud of them.”

“Several Cromer firms contributed to the end result - for example All-Tile provided the flooring and Postles took care of all our electrical goods - and it just goes to show that the town has plenty of great companies offering high-quality services”, added Richard. “We have a superb relationship with many local firms and it’s been a real pleasure to work with them on this project.”

The Grove has also freshened up their management team to oversee what is sure to be a busy summer season. Harriet Blake is heading up the restaurant operation alongside head chef Gary Parrett - the summer menu launched on May 1st - and Carolyn Millman is looking after the front desk.

The interiors of the new rooms were designed by Richard’s wife Jo and reflect varieties of English orchard fruit – Merryweather (damson), Gladstone and Honey Pippin (apple), Sunburst (cherry) and Victoria (plum).

Everything Goes!

The workshop at Aylsham will be open throughout the weekend and staff will be on hand to answer any questions. SUNLINE GETS SEALS’ APPROVAL

The lifeboat house has not housed a lifeboat since 1922 and has a very interesting history - if you haven't been to Blakeney, maybe now is the time as the reserve is not just known for its seal colony, it has several National and International conservation designations and is renowned

Usually you would expect to see seals at Blakeney point but on Wednesday 17th April there was an addition to the Point by way of two fitters from Sunline Curtains and Blinds. The National Trust had pproached Sunline for blinds for their recently renovated property at Blakeney point and of course Sunline rose to the challenge.

The lifeboat house on Blakeney point stands approximately three and a half miles along a shingle spit and was built in 1898, replacing a smaller building from the 1850s. The National Trust acquired Blakeney point 101 years ago, becoming the first nature reserve in Norfolk.

for the breeding Tern colonies as well as other important species of flora and fauna.

Last word to one of the fitters, who was heard to say, "It certainly has been a different experience for us today - we just hoped we had remembered all the equipment we needed otherwise it would have been a long swim back for one of us!" To celebrate the Centenary last year, The National Trust initiated a major refurbishment programme, which was completed last month, the blinds being the finishing touch.

Mr Duffill managed to keep on dry land for the measuring side of the job as he was transported by Land Rover along the shingle spit to the lifeboat house but due to the conservation area and the breeding birds on this route it could not be used for the final stage of the job. So the fitters, blinds and all their tools had to make their way by boat to complete the job. Mr Duffill said “After 32 years of business this has to be a first for us to travel to a job by boat”.

ACTIVITY & EVENT HIRE

All the blinds and tools had to be wrapped in plastic to protect them from any water spray and as you can see in the photos the fitters also had to be well prepared for the sea trip. As Sunline prepared to leave, the English weather had been kind and the trip over to Blakeney point was a pleasurable one taking in the beautiful surroundings and looking out for seals. On the return journey however the wind had picked up and the fitters got a little wet from the sea spray and I have to say looked a little green around the gills... North Walsham Organist at Worstead

The Choir Worstead will be performing Faure Requiem and other well-known classical pieces, including Hymn to the Virgin by Britten at St Mary’s Church on 18 May at 7.30pm.

It is the first time the community choir has tackled a classical concert and musical director Beverly Downes is hoping it will prove successful. “The choir members have been working hard on the material and the church is an amazing setting for the music. We hope it will attract people who have seen the choir before and a new audience.”

She said the choir was always looking for new members to join and after the concert date would be ideal when the group would be working a new set of songs for Worstead Festival on 27 and 28 July.

Tickets for the concert are £7.50, which includes tea/coffee or a glass of wine. Buy on the door or book on 01692 538941.

Over £2,500 raised at Sainsbury’s North Walsham for Red Nose Day

The money has been collected and counted and Sainsbury’s North Walsham have announced that their fundraising for Red Nose Day 2013 raised £2,562.This year marked the 25th anniversary of Red Nose Day which took place on Friday 15 March.

Local residents across North Walsham got in the spirit by raising funds, including Sainsbury’s customers, who made a huge contribution by donating money to fundraising events at the Bacton Road store as well purchasing this year’s range of merchandise including the Nose with Toes, sold in-store.

Among the fundraising highlights at the North Walsham store this year included colleagues taking part in a Gangnam Style flash mob in the store during Red Nose Day. Other activities which saw colleagues ‘Do Something Funny for Money’ included colleagues dressing up and customer competitions.

Sainsbury’s North Walsham Store Manager,

Rob Wilkinson, said: “Many of our colleagues were ‘reddy’ to go one step further this year to mark the 25th anniversary of Red Nose Day. It’s been a great experience over the last few weeks and we wouldn’t have raised this much if it wasn’t for the generous donations from our North Walsham customers”.

Sainsbury’s supermarkets, including North Walsham customers were able to do their bit for the environment too by recycling their Red Noses in-store until the end of March. Sainsbury’s and Comic Relief have partnered for a second year with leading UK carpet underlay manufacturer, Ball & Young, to recycle the PU Foam Red Noses. The collected Noses will start a new life as part of Ball & Young’s award-winning Cloud 9 range of underlays, used mainly in British homes.

Katherine How, Sainsbury’s Comic Relief Partnership Manager, added “It’s good news

Dear Margaret

I refer to your recent report on the meeting called by Norman Lamb about the need for more voluntary community car schemes. It highlighted the lack inCromer and Sheringham and the surrounding area.

North Norfolk Community Transport has in fact recently started this service but with only two voluntary drivers at the moment is looking for more in order to be able to provide for a greater number of people needing to get to the hospitals or their local surgery. This is a much needed and greatly appreciated service so if you have any readers who would be interested in driving (expenses are paid), they should phone 01263 839009. The same number applies for those who want to book transport to their medical appointments.

Missing from the list of established voluntary schemes was that which has been operated for several years by NNCT in the North Walsham, Mundesley, Stalham and adjacent areas. This scheme also can always use more drivers, as the numbers using the service in the last year has doubled. Both potential users and new drivers should phone 01692 500840.

for the environment and it’s helping Comic Relief supporters make an even bigger lasting impact, so thank-you to everyone who wore their Red Noses with pride and have now given them a new home”.

Norfolk Jazz at St Nicholas Church

The Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band heads into its summer programme with two events in May.

The Band is never happier than when playing on its “home turf” of North Norfolk and it will be at St. Nicholas’ Church in North Walsham on Saturday 18 May from 10am. The event is a Pentecost Fiesta organised by “Churches Together in North Walsham” to celebrate the festival of Pentecost, when the first disciples felt the power and inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It is always an enjoyable occasion with a variety of stalls and entertainment. A great way to spend a Saturday morning!

If you don’t mind travelling further afield you can see the band on Friday 17 May on Orwell Quay, Ipswich, from 3.00 p.m. The event is the launch of the Ipswich Food Festival. Local and regional foods alongside world food on the prestigious Ipswich waterfront development.

If you have been waiting for Norfolk Jazz to get into the 21 Century, you can now keep up-to-date and find more information at

Doorstep Crime

Norfolk Police are taking part in a week-long national operation to raise awareness of rogue traders and tackle any cold callers reported in the county.

Officers from Operation RADAR are dedicated to dealing with doorstep crime in Norfolk 52 weeks of the year. They work with partners to target rogue traders and highlight the dangers of consenting to having work carried out by cold callers.

The week of activities is being led by Operation Liberal, the national intelligence unit for distraction burglary and associated travelling criminality, and Trading Standards.

• Use a spy hole, chain or window to look at any caller you don’t recognise. Not sure? Don’t open the door

• Display a No Cold Calling sticker on your door, you can get one of these for free from your local Safer Neighbourhood Team

• Always ask for ID – take it from the caller through the letterbox and read it carefully

• Check the caller is genuine by telephoning their company using the number in the phone book. The Gas Board and the Water Board no longer exist

Police warning to rat run drivers

Drivers who ignore access-only signs in an area of North Walsham are being warned they could face a £30 fine.

Officers from the local safer neighbourhood team will be conducting regular high-visibility patrols along Station Road following several complaints that drivers are using the road as a short-cut.

Police have received several complaints about motorists using the section of road between Millfield Road and Norwich Road, near the

Rich Chocolate Torte

from head chef at The Grove - Gary Parrett

Since the runaway success of last month’s Proper Sticky Toffee Puddin’ my chef de partie David Chattenton has been pestering me to let him write up another recipe for you, and after he promised to mop the floors every night for six weeks I couldn’t really say no. Apparently he’s being approached in the streets for autographs and there is a book deal around the corner, and as I stand to pick up 50% of the profits as an agency fee I think I should encourage him wherever possible…

This rich chocolate torte is a demanding recipe but extremely worthwhile – it broke the hearts of many of our Valentine’s Day guests a while back and will be featuring throughout the season on our table d’hôte.

The summer à la carte is now in full operation and it’s great to see so many happy diners enjoying their food with us. Don’t forget we’re privileged to be hosting the marquee lunch and tea when Cromer CC entertain the world-famous Lashings Cricket Club on 11th August – tickets are still available so visit www.cromercricketclub.com to reserve yours!

I look forward to seeing you soon.

Gary Parrett

RICH CHOCOLATE TORTE

For the chocolate sponge base 225g plain flour 350g caster sugar 85g cocoa powder 1 ½ tsp baking powder 1 ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda 2 free-range eggs 250ml milk 125ml vegetable oil 2 tsp vanilla extract 250ml boiling water

1. Preheat the oven to 180c/350f/gas mark 4. Grease and line a 40cm tin.

2. Place all of the cake ingredients except the boiling water into a large mixing bowl. Using a wooden spoon or electric whisk beat the mixture until smooth and combined.

3. Add the boiling water to the mixture a little at a time until smooth – the mix will be very liquid but that’s no problem.

4. Pour the mix into the prepared tin and bake in the oven for 25 – 35 minutes until the top is firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean.

5. Set aside to cool.

North Walsham Probus Club

I am sure there are many of who have been acquainted with someone, perhaps for several years, but failed to appreciate their wealth of personal experience. Such may have been the feeling of some North Walsham Probus Club members last Wednesday, when the newly elected president, Ian Wood, gave his introductory talk.

Ian was born in Durban, South Africa, at the height of the Second World War. His father was killed shortly after he was born, when his mother found that she was unable to care for him. He was subsequently adopted by John and Natalie Wood, and attended a Christian Brothers College, run b y the Roman Catholic Church.

Leaving school at seventeen Ian became a junior salesman for a Durban produce marketing firm, involved in ‘fast moving consumer produce’. Married, with three children, he later divorced during the early seventies. He then worked for a time at Pietersburg, within travelling distance of the Zimbabwean border. This gave him the opportunity to make assessment of two differing regimes. Later he worked for a South African brewery, where he met his present wife Joan.

He came to England for the first time in 2001, as a result of Joan’s family connections and moved to Brundall. Initially Ian worked at a Hilton Hotel and later cooked for the

For the torte 250g dark chocolate (70%) 2 tbsp golden syrup 570ml double cream 4 tsp instant coffee granules 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp mint extract

1. Break the choclate into small pieces into a large heatproof bowl. Spoon in the syrup and pour in ¼ of the cream. Stand the bowl over (not in) a pan of hot water over the lowest possible heat and leave until the choclate has melted. Remove the bowl from the pan and stir to combine, then leave until barely warm.

2. Pour the rest of the cream into a very large bowl and tip in the coffee, mint extract and cinnamon. Whip the cream until it’s a milkshake consistency.

3. Fold the two mixes together with a large metal spoon in a figure of eight movement.

4. Pour the torte mix onto the sponge and put in the fridge for one hour.

We had a gentleman in for dinner at the weekend who asked for a spoonful of raspberry sorbet with his torte – it worked so well that we are sending all our tortes out with raspberry sorbet now! criminally insane. He later admitted privately appearing on the ‘Weakest Link, at the behest of Ann Robinson, whom he found quite affable.

A salutary reminder of the influence of apartheid was Joan’s reaction when she found a white woman working in a public toilet in Norwich.

This provoked comments upon apartheid, but I suspect that the most singular impression was the release of Mandela from Robbins Island in 1989, without civil disturbance and his refusal to be drawn into recrimination, notwithstanding his harsh treatment.

The Probus Club meets again on the 22 May at the Community Centre, when new members will be welcomed.

NORTH WALSHAM & BRADFIELD FLOWER CLUB lcdelectrical@yahoo.co.uk

At the second meeting in our Emerald Celebration Year, held at the Community Centre on 25 April, we welcomed over 100 members and guests who enjoyed home-made cakes and tea before settling down to watch a demonstration with a difference by Alan Gray from the Old Vicarage Gardens at East Ruston.

Alan wowed and amused us with his own unique way of arranging flowers for the house with the added interest of some unusual foliage, some we had never seen before. Anne Bridge, Area Chairman of NAFAS was with us for the afternoon and kindly praised our "go ahead and friendly club" as being one of the most successful in the area.

East Ruston Gardens are hosting a Plant Fair and Garden event on 8 June from 10am There will be up to 30 plant stands and nursery exhibitors to enjoy along with a Gardeners Question Time with the Radio Norfolk Gardeners, plus a Floral Art Demonstration and a talk from Cotswold Garden Plants.

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM

We have at last been able to start ‘Spring’ at North Walsham in Bloom. Our programme for the next few weeks is very full. We have already been out all over the town having photos taken of our new tubs ready for our impending web site. The beds and tubs will be emptied week commencing 20 May and the planting will begin on the 27th. Weather permitting we hope to have every thing done in that two week frame. We do have one or two problems, namely some people being on holiday then and the school half term to deal with, but thanks to the fact that we have now had two more helpers join us we hope we can cope. The hanging baskets will be going up on the 26 May, there should be around seventy this year in the town centre. Our coffee morning in St Benets Hall on the 11 April was a great success and we raised a nice amount of

Entry £3 for the event, or £7.50 if you want to view the gardens too. Full details on 01692 650432 or their website.

For our next meeting on Thursday 23 May we are back at the Catholic Church Hall and Melissa Sheldrake will be demonstrating "The language of flowers" Doors open from 1.45pm. Guests £4. Free parking.

Another date for your diaries – 6 – 9 June in St Nicholas Church, North Walsham. A celebration in flowers of "Norfolk's Finest". Exhibits will depict some of Norfolk's interesting people and places throughout the church over four days.

In addition, there will be a Preview Evening (and Grand Opening) with Buffet and Wine on 5 June at 7.30pm, and on Saturday 8th a Concert in the church by the Norfolk Wherry Brass Band. Tickets for each event are £5 and available now on 01692 408971. All proceeds are for the Church Tower Repair Fund. money for our cause, our thanks go to all who supported us, as well as those who bought plants from Orchard Farm Plants stall. Please make yourselves known to us as you see us around the town, it is so nice to have people stop for a chat. It makes all we do worth doing.

The 'one-stitch facelift':

TEL: 01692 404687 OR: 07776 216659

Can one little stitch knock off a dozen years?

What is a One Stitch Face Lift? The idea for the procedure was prompted by an old Hollywood trick in which actresses used tape to pull slackened skin upward, taking great pains to hide the tape with hair or wigs. Dr. Renato Calabria, a Cosmetic Surgeon practicing in Beverly Hills took the concept and developed a procedure that would accomplish the feat more permanently.

How is the procedure performed? The One Stitch Face Lift is a minimally invasive procedure offering Face Lift like results, but without the need to undergo major surgery and resultant prolonged recovery. It is a brief procedure performed totally under a local anaesthetic. We have modified it slightly so that instead of relying on one stitch, we use a few hidden stiches under the skin. There are few risks associated with the treatment and,

due to its minimally invasive nature; it is safe for patients with diabetes, heart conditions or other medical problems. Most people find they are able to return to normal activities the following day, but as there may be some associated swelling or bruising with the procedure, some may find it more comfortable to take a few days to recover.

What results will I see? The results are subtle but are often just enough to give patients a fresher and firmer appearance. Patients who are looking to achieve subtle results without prolonged recovery time will really benefit from this procedure.

What are the risks? With any procedure there are risks such as risk of bleeding, bruising and infection. Minimally

invasive nature of this procedure however minimises these.

Another name for this procedure is a Facelift Retighten, which enables atients whose facelifts have started to sag due to the ageing process to get an extra lift.

What alternative treatments are available? You can have non-surgical treatments such as a liquid facelift. A full or modified facelift or the innovative laser facelift.

What are the costs? The fee for one stitch facelift is £1750 which compares very favorably with the cost of a facelift under a general anaesthetic.

Grumpy Old Man: Road Closed

‘Sheringham Traders Angry at Road Closures’ – so ran the billboard headlines recently, propped outside the newsagents.

Investigating, I read that pedestrian crossings were to be installed and thought ‘how welcome’, as there are, unusually, none in Sheringham town centre streets to protect the harassed shoppers and that the traders ought to be pleased life will be a bit easier and safer for their customers.

In due course Station Approach was closed whilst the contractors got busy behind their red and white barriers and the bus services did their best to carry on.

A few days later normality returned, but after all the expense and disruption the result was

not a proper pedestrian crossing as I had fondly imagined. A strip of brickweave had been laid across the road, flush with the tarmac, meeting a dropped kerb at each side and the double yellow lines carefully rejoined.

I deduce the purpose is to provide a level crossing point for those with pushchairs, trolleys and wheelchairs. However, it gives no protection for their users or for other pedestrians who must still defer to road traffic, but it has introduced an element of uncertainty, as I have observed it does tempt walkers to cross after dithering at the kerb whilst glaring at oncoming drivers in a battle of wills to see who backs down first. We already have one of these brickweave pathways across the lesser one-way traffic of Station Road and it seems

we may get another of these ‘shall I, shan’t I?’ crossings which are, in my opinion, of as much use as a chocolate teapot, actually adding to the hazard of using the streets.

Why the Highway authorities are messing about with these baffling novelties at considerable expense I fail to understand. It is best summarised by a woman who, in the act of pulling her elderly mother back onto the pavement, told her crossly, ‘if you get knocked over you won’t have a leg to stand on’!

It seems the traders were justified in being angry after all.

All we need is for the sun to shine and the public to turn out in their hundreds to support us.”
