Rotarian runs as Archdeacon charges

Intrepid North Walsham Rotarian, Geoff Harrison, took part in “the Archdeacon’s Charge” on May Bank Holiday Monday at Raynham Hall, near Fakenham, to raise money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance and North Walsham parish church.

The idea came from John Ashe, Archdeacon of Lynn, and aimed to give people an opportunity to take part in a sponsored walk or run of between 2 and 10 miles in the grounds of one of Norfolk’s beautiful country estates which is not normally open to the public. An annual event, the “run” raised £40,000 in the three years 2010-12.

Geoff ran 7.37 miles in 1 hour 23 minutes - an average of 5.3 mph. The course took him past the 17th Century hall near the source of the River Wensum where he is pictured. The T-shirt Geoff is wearing with the Rotary roundel belonged to fellow runner and Rotarian Richard “Dick” Askew, a past president of the North Walsham Rotary Club who sadly died last year.

From Pot to Plate

– The Norfolk Crab and Lobster Cookbook

Elliott Bloomfield and John Lee Published by Red Flannel Publishing

Two local authors and a local publishing company have worked together to produce From Pot to Plate... The Norfolk Crab and Lobster Cookbook.

Norfolk to join his sister and brother in law after they opened the Rocket House Café in Cromer.

This beautifully illustrated 64 page book will further enhance the reputation of Cromer crabs and lobsters as the tastiest in the world.

Elliott Bloomfield is the head chef at Cromer’s Rocket House Café and John Lee has crab fishing in his blood, carrying on a tradition that has been passed down in his family for at least eight generations. It is not only the fishing skills that have been passed down to John, but the knowledge of how to “dress” a crab as well as recipes for turning the crabs into tasty meals.

Like John, Elliott was born and raised in North Norfolk and after studying for a degree in engineering he worked at a London based design consultancy, but his real passion was cooking. After a few years he quit his job and moved to California to gain professional experience as a chef, ultimately returning to

K C evin

Pot to Plate features a range of recipes from the simple, such as the crab sandwich and a crab dip, through favourites like crab crostini and potted crab to the more sophisticated crab pappardelle and tagliatelle with spicy lobster and tomato ragu. Every recipe is well illustrated withphotographs showing both the methods and the final dish.

The book is however more than just a cookery

News from the White Horse, Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon Method

Summer is almost upon us and we are preparing for a busy season and looking forward to introducing our new menus to our regular dinners and the many holiday visitors who enjoy their holidays in North Norfolk.

Preheat oven to 140c. Lightly grease a lined baking tray.

Whisk the egg whites in a large bowl with a pinch of salt until stiff peaks appear, then slowly add sugar to meringue until it goes stiff and shiny, and then add corn flour and vinegar.

We have received lots of postive comments about our ‘Taster Menu’ and I am pleased to announce that we are to continue with the menu until the end of June.

Our special ‘Family Sunday Roast’ will remain on the menu for the coming weeks. It’s a great way for the whole family to enjoy a traditional Sunday Roast and we believe it’s real value for money.

Our new Wine List has been well received, offering diners some exciting new wines whilst retaining some of our most popular bottles.

Nathan’s recipe for Passion Fruit Pavlova

Ingredients (Recipe serves 8)

6 egg whites 350g caster sugar 2 teaspoons cornflour 1 teaspon white wine vinegar Pinch of salt 600ml double cream 6 passion fruit

Drop large spoonfuls of meringue onto the baking tray and spread each one roughly to 10cm round.

Bake for 45 minutes, until top of meringue is pale in colour and of a marshmallow consistency in the middle.

Whip cream to soft peaks and spoon required amount into the middle of the pavlova.

Halve the passion fruits and scrape the pulp of the fruit over the pavlova.

NATIONAL BLOOD SERVICE BLOOD DONOR SESSIONS

Thursday 13 June

at the COMMUNITY CENTRE, NEW ROAD, NORTH WALSHAM 1pm – 3.15pm and 4.45pm – 7pm

Roll up your sleeve for World Blood Day

Blood donors will be recognised all over the world next month as internationally acknowledged World Blood Donor Day is set to take place on Friday 14 June.

Falling during National Blood Week (10 to 16 June), World Blood Donor Day recognises the birthday of Dr Karl Landsteiner who discovered the ABO blood group in 1901.

Blood donation and blood grouping are as important as ever. Hospitals across England and North Wales need around 7,000 units of blood every day, and it is vital that NHS Blood and Transplant collects the right amount of the different blood groups to provide the blood patients rely on to survive. Individuals across the region have the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and donate at a number of donor sessions in June.

Derek Carr, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHS Blood and Transplant for the Anglia area, said “During this year’s National Blood Week, we are hoping to encourage people in the local area who have never given blood before to commit to give blood for the first-time and to remind those who have not given for some time, to come back and donate. Please come and help us to provide the blood that hospitals and their patients need. A donor saves and improves lives every time they donate – and you could too!” Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7st 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years. For more information or to book an appointment visit www.blood.co.uk or contact 0300 123 23 23.

Aylsham Foodie Quiz attracts over 80 contestants From celebrity to history, the silver screen to tasting, Slow Food Aylsham's 'foodie' quiz on 11 May had questions on a wide range of subjects, but all with some connection to food or drink.

Quizmaster Roger Willis' brain had been working overtime to include posers on subjects like weather forecaster Michael Fish, film star Halle Berry and former Dr Who Tom Baker while wife Jill had devised a fiendish round featuring ten ingredients which had to be identified by taste, smell or feel.

Over 80 quizzers sat down to what was generally acclaimed to have been a veryenjoyable evening of fun, which also featured a supper prepared and served by Slow Food Aylsham members and including a selection of pork pies from local butcher G F White.

The winning team of six people each received a basket containing apple juice from Aylsham Farmers' Market, cheeses from local delicatessen Gusto and cheese biscuits from the weekly cooperative Aylsham Country Market.

Proceeds from the evening will help to fund the Aylsham Food Festival, organised by Slow Food Aylsham, which will run from 4th to 6th October.

Quizzers were set the task of identifying 10 ingredients by taste, smell or feel

Slow Food Aylsham is a membership organisation, part of the international Slow Food movement.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Our branch of Cats Protection has now been in existence for nearly 13 years and we are pleased at the difference we have made to the lives of so many cats. Although most of these have been healthy, some have joined us with infectious conditions such as ring worm, toxoplasmosis, enteritis, cat flu or other infectious conditions. These have all been contained within the individual family groups and no cross infections have ever occurred. This is primarily because when cats and kittens join us they are kept to their separate family groups, in individual pens and not mixed with other cats, thereby preventing any chance of cross infection. Coming from a home or outside environment to a cat pen is in itself stressful for the cats and on occasion there has been a need to put additional barriers between the double pens to make life easier for those who do not appreciate being so close to other felines.

Another reason why we have not experienced cross infections is the cleaning regime that takes place on a daily basis. Bedding areas are wiped clean and floors swept and washed each day. Disinfecting the litter trays and replacing the litter, washing the food and water bowls and replacing any soiled bedding also help contain any problems. On those occasions when we have had cats that have had an infectious condition their pens have been the last to be attended to. With some conditions it has also been necessary to don protective clothing or in one instance when a fosterer was caring for cats and kittens with different infections, she changed her outer clothes before going from the first to the second family and then again before going in to her own animals.

One benefit of taking these precautions is the complements we receive from visitors on the cleanliness and lack of catty smells in the pens (unless an unneutered tom has recently taken up residence) of which our fosterers are justifiably proud. It does take up quite a lot of their time but at the end of the day it does pay dividends.

Flystrike in Rabbits

Between April and October it is really important to check your rabbit twice a day for a condition called ‘MYIASIS’, more commonly known as ‘FLYSTRIKE’. In the warmer weather blow flies lay their eggs in the fur of rabbit’s hindquarters especially if the rabbit is debilitated by some underlying health problem such as obesity, dental disease, diarrhoea, arthritis or a skin wound. Dirty hutches and runs are also very attractive to flies so always make sure you are cleaning soiled areas daily. www.miramarvets.co.uk Check your rabbits hindquarters morning and evening throughout summer as this condition happens FAST causing serious skin damage. The fly larvae hatch in the fur of the rabbit and burrow into the skin and flesh of the host resulting in shock and septicaemia, a potentially fatal combination. Products are available to help prevent this condition. Prevention is far better than cure where ‘flystrike’ is concerned as a cure cannot be guaranteed. Miramar Vets 7 point plan for a tip top bunny 1. Check your rabbits hindquarters at least twice a day 2. Make your rabbits hutch insect proof by using thin mesh over doors and windows 3. Use preventative medication on your rabbit regularly through summer 4. Keep your rabbit at the ideal weight 5. Feed a balanced diet rich in hay and grass to promote digestive health and therefore avoid diarrhoea or weight gain 6. Clean your bunny out regularly, this may mean twice daily removal of soiled bedding in the summer months 7. If you find maggots on your rabbit contact the vet IMMEDIATELY, the faster we can act the better the chance of survival Natalie, one of our qualified nurses, has a keen interest in rabbits and is on hand to offer advice on husbandry and preventative healthcare, just give her a call on 01263 822293.

Dress Up at NPL www.brgardeningservices.co.uk

The Norfolk Pigeon Loft, fast approaching its first year, is full to the brim with affordable inspiration selling fabulous scarves, hats, handbags and costume jewellery, catering for all ages and every style imaginable. The Norfolk Pigeon Loft started life as an online business run by Donna Cherry as an opportunity to sell her handcrafted velvet silk scarves and corsages.

"Our story so far is full of excitement; we’ve been open some nine months now, participated in our first Christmas and Easter in Cromer and we are looking forward to a colourful, sparkling summer, which will be perfect for our Summer hats, evening shawls and quirky jewellery." "At the NPL we specialise in individuality. Helping our customers to make their own statement at an affordable price – that’s what we are all about. Style doesn’t need to be expensive. Having the confidence to add and layer scarves and jewellery to an outfit, or adding a simple hair accessory can complete a look for a special occasion or an everyday outfit."

"We offer an all-round service. From our own designs to helping you to create that ‘one off’ piece of costume jewellery – just bring your ideas and we will try with your help to create what’s on your mind.

We can also have a go at bringing back to life your broken costume jewellery, whether it’s a simple broken clasp or altering the length of a necklace – we will always be happy to take a look."

What’s next for the Norfolk Pigeon Loft? "We have an on-going commitment to our shop and customers here in Cromer where we are continuing to add new stock on a daily basis. We are in the process of expanding our website to sell a selection of our jewellery and accessories and to give regular updates about what is new and happening at the Norfolk Pigeon Loft."

‌and at last we can begin concentrating more on our gardens; often a great place to start is our lawns.

Following last year’s wet weather moss is a common sight. Iron Sulphate is most commonly used to remove moss. We recommend a liquid type applied with watering can or pressure sprayer, though lawn sand can also be used if spread evenly and correctly.

Moss will quickly turn black and the following week you can scarify your lawn. This can be done with a metal fan rake or powered scarifier and the aim is remove all dead moss and grass. If your lawn is compacted you can use a fork to wiggle the roots around, creating aeration in the soil.

Following this you can remove any large weeds and apply seed to any patches. A high-nitrate feed can also be applied in Spring, though great care must be takens as too much can cause unwanted weeds and may even burn the grass. Again, we recommend a diluted liquid unless you have access to a spreader.

By following these simple steps and with the most basic tools you can help to ensure you will have a beautiful green lawn all summer long.

Norfolk’s Finest

This year the flower festival at Saint Nicholas Church North Walsham will celebrate both the lives of famous Norfolk people and our wonderful County’s heritage. The rich tapestry of this very special place will be recreated in flowers around the spectacular setting of the parish church.

Saint Nicholas will be in full glory for the opening and preview evening on Wednesday 5 June at 7.30pm thanks to the North Walsham and Bradfield Flower Club. Everyone is invited to purchase a ticket and join us for a celebratory glass of wine and buffet as the organ plays to serenade the first viewing of the wonderful displays.

The festival will be open from Thursday 6 June to Sunday 9 from 10am to 4pm (11.30am to 2.30pm on Sunday) with refreshments available. Entrance is free but we are hoping that the festival will generate funding for the very necessary tower repair project. Programmes will be available for ÂŁ1 and any donations are welcome.

There will be a concert on Saturday 8 June at 7:30 performed by the Wherry Brass Band. Those who came last year will know that there is no better way to spend an early summer’s evening. Tickets for both this and the opening cost £5 and can be booked on 01692 408971.

The Festival will close with a Civic Service and Songs of Praise at 3pm on Sunday 9 June. All the proceeds will go towards maintenance of the tower. Extensive surveys are already in progress funded by generous endowments and an English Heritage grant. In order to pay for the next stage we need to find an additional ÂŁ55,000 to supplement our resources. Further information on how you can support this appeal, in other ways than attendance at the flower festival, is available in the church or on the website saint-nicholas.org.uk

Waitrose launches national scheme to encourage UK schools to produce and sell home-grown food From school to supermarket, Waitrose is unveiling a national ‘Grow and Sell’ initiative aimed at encouraging 7-11 year olds across the UK to grow their own produce and sell it to Waitrose customers.

The initiative, in association with the Waitrose farm on the Leckford Estate, aims to inspire over 100,000 children across the UK to grow their own produce during the summer months. The children will learn more about where food comes from, the impact of seasons, and develop entrepreneurial skills by selling their food directly to shoppers.

Tina Varns, Sustainability & Ethical Sourcing Manager, Waitrose, said “We are really pleased to be rolling this initiative out to all 290 of our branches. Growing at school encourages children to eat well and to go for a wider variety in their food - we believe this is very important as it paves the way for healthy eating.

For the launch last month, every Waitrose branch will work with local primary schools who will each receive a ‘Grow and Sell Seed Kit’. The kit has been specially designed to get school veg patches up and running, and includes seeds, equipment and step-by-step growing instructions. Later in the summer, the branches will invite the schools to sell their home-grown produce outside the store.

Schools will also be able to receive additional ‘Grow and Sell Seed Kits’ through the in-store Waitrose Community Matters scheme, where customers can support

about how many nowadays do not know what chips are made from or that a blackberry is a type of fruit and not just a phone. The Waitrose ‘Grow and Sell’ scheme will play an important role in helping children understand the journey from field to plate. And evidence shows those who participate in growing projects are more likely to eat a wider variety of foods and make good nutritional choices throughout their lives.”

Children from Manor Road School their local school by dropping a green token into the relevant perspex box.

Alan Titchmarsh, the nation's favourite gardener and wellknown TV presenter, recently came on board at Waitrose to help raise the profile of British agriculture and horticulture.

Alan Titchmarsh said “Teaching children at an early age about the food they eat and where it comes from is something that I’m very passionate about - we’ve all read shocking statistics

The scheme also allows children to identify where food comes from, the importance of seasonality and the fragility of producing food. But broader than that, Waitrose hope it will teach children to be enterprising by developing an entrepreneurial spirit by selling their produce to our customers.”

At our North Walsham branch, Children from Manor Road Junior School, Millfield Primary and St Nicholas House School have collected their packs. Jack and Megan from Manor Road School, (both 9 years old) said they were looking forward to growing their own vegetables at school. Owen, Toby, Mia and Ruby (aged 7 and 8 years old) walked to Waitrose from their school to collect their packs and were excited about coming back to sell their vegetables at the branch later in the year. Mrs Stephen’s entire class from St Nicholas house came to Waitrose to talk about healthy eating, then took their pack back to school with them. They plan to take photos of the vegetables growing, and of themselves gardening! It sounds like it’s going to be a fun spring and summer at school!

Kingfisher Kids Club - Healthy Tea for Parents Last month the children at Kingfisher Kids Club held a Healthy Tea Challenge, where their parents where invited in to share a healthy tea.

Over the course of two weeks the children made invitations and discussed what healthy options they could provide for the occasion.

They had a couple of blank templates to get them thinking about the healthy foods they could provide, one was a lunchbox and the other was a dinner plate. These have formed part of their healthy eating display. On the evening, after the children themselves had eaten their healthy snack – using guidelines from the School Food Trust, which we work within throughout all sessions - they put on their aprons and set to prepare food fit for Kings and Queens.

They made menus and name flags to provide the information about the food for their parents, just in case of any allergies! They

buttered bread, cut fruit, served and arranged the food on the tables, divided food stuffs such as natural yogurt and humous into pots, prepared plates and napkins and when their parents eventually arrived they served them soft drinks, made cups of tea, made sure that their parents had everything they liked and then they sat with their parents to enjoy the fruits of their labour. Many of the foods were rice or pasta based, such as cold pasta, cheese and pineapple or rice, mackerel and green pepper - we used fresh and dried fruits which appealed to all.

Only one catch... both the parents and the children had to try something new or something they didn’t think they liked!!

Other activities included games such as Grab the grub!, Nutritional Lotto and Tummy Ache

and we had a kitchen role play area, healthy cooking, food colouring and crafts, all of which were continued where possible throughout our Friday Toddler Group where we made apple collages and fruit salad. Within the Monday Story Cafe we read Handa’s Surprise - we played Kim’s Game, explored, investigated, tasted, touched and experimented with the fruits from the story. We also invited the Pre-School Learning Alliance to come along and promote Healthy Eating to our Toddler Parents through their Inside Out Healthy Eating Programme.

Look out Jamie Oliver, we are watching you!

Each of the children then took home a pack of information, such as the ‘NHS – 5 a day What’s it all about’, ‘Change 4 Life – Top tips for top kids’, ‘Don’t let drink sneak up on you’ and tasty recipes leaflets.

Rain or Shine promises an open air theatrical treat this summer!

When two sets of twins and their mirror images are confused time and time again in the piratical town of Ephesus, the scene is set for farce, foolishness, frivolity and fun in a complete Comedy of Errors!

This summer, the Rain or Shine Theatre Company are planning for plenty of shine as they present what is thought to be one of Shakespeare’s first plays, The Comedy Of Errors. This exciting and hilarious tale of mistaken identity is an ideal choice for an outdoor theatrical event!

The tour includes a performance at Mannington Hall, Saxthorpe on Friday 31st May at 7pm. For tickets phone 01263 584175 / 768444, or online for the entire tour via

www.rainorshine.co.uk or admin@walpoleestate.co.uk

Suitable for children (six and up), and adults of all ages, audiences are invited to bring along low-backed seating or rugs, and a picnic to maximise their enjoyment of the al fresco performances. The company travel across the UK from Alderney to Edinburgh, and Wales to Norfolk, visiting some of the country’s most picturesque castles, stately homes and gardens imaginable.

Rain or Shine’s cast of nine professional actors are all set to re-create the comical confusion and chaotic capers of Shakespeare’s hilarious masterpiece of mistaken identity that is… The Comedy Of Errors.

Once upon a time… two sets of identical twin babies and their parents survived a shipwreck. Fate, however, decreed that the family should be split up, the mother one way, the father and one of each twin another, and the final pair a third way… Twenty Five years later, in search of their long lost family, two of the twins, Antipholus of Syracuse and his manservant, Dromio, arrive in Ephesus, a city reputedly full of rogues, cheats and sorcerers. Although this is their first visit merchants greet them as acquaintances, women pursue them as lovers, and Ephesus appears to be a place where everybody knows their names!

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER FOXGLOVES, FULMARS AND FUDGE

All gardeners are busy at this time of the year getting their gardens, hanging baskets and containers ready for what we hope will be a sunny summer. However as we walk around the garden centres looking for geraniums, petunias and busy lizzies we should spare a thought for the wildlife all around us and choose some plants that provide shelter and food for birds, insects and other creatures.

If you have enough room consider planting a tree and pick one that is friendly to wildlife. Willows are trees rich in insect life, 250 species of insect have been found harbouring among their leaves and branches (do not grow a large variety too near your house). In autumn their seeds are a favourite food of siskins, redpolls and other finches. Other trees that attract insects and which are suitable for small gardens include the rowan, field maple and hazel.

There are also flowering plants to choose which attract insects and birds and increasingly garden centres are clearly labelling ‘bee friendly plants’. As well as adding colour to your garden well chosen plants will support a vast number of moths and butterflies as well as bees and other insects. These insects, and in late summer the seeds of the plants, will be eaten by a variety of birds.

Nigel is a great bird lover as well as a great gardener and he is also a frequent visitor to North Norfolk. He spent his school days at Beeston Regis and writes in a recent blog about his joy in seeing fulmars returning to the cliffs where he saw them as a schoolboy. He writes fondly of this area as follows ‘The most wonderful coastal features, between Sheringham and Cromer are the cliffs. These are not proper cliffs, towering majestically and holding the sea at bay with indestructible granite or steadfast slate. No, no. These cliffs are tired, folded, collapsible and nsubstantial...made of glacial till, they have the consistency of fudge – not the bendy fudge that is offered, for example at Sheringham sweet shop Fudgetastic – but the crumbly sort you make at home’

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds has a list of recommended flowers to grow to attract insects and birds including –Foxglove, Valerian, Pinks, Thyme, Godetia, Cosmos, Cornflower, Candytuft, Michaelmas Daisy, Marjoram and Sunflower. As a general the more simple and open the flowers the more likely they are to be good for wildlife.

The affinity between gardeners and wildlife can be illustrated by the news that Nigel Colborn, the garden writer and one time presenter of Gardeners’ World has been awarded the Victoria Medal of Honour. This is the highest award made by the Royal Horticultural Society and the number of holders of the medals is strictly limited. If you look carefully at Alan Titchmarsh when he presents the Chelsea Flower Show you will see a tiny badge in his lapel which shows that he is also a proud holder of this medal.

He also writes about the sand martins nesting in the cliffs and describes this area of cliffs, breakwaters, birds and waves as a perfect picture, ‘so lovely so stark, so Norfolk’ and finishes by stating ‘I’d love to live here again’. Nigel’s blogs can be read on ‘silvertreedaze.blogspot.co.uk’.

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM

On Sunday 28 April North Walsham in Bloom lost a very good friend and staunch supporter with the death of Pat Stott.

Pat had not been ill and had in fact returned from a holiday in Barcelona with her family only a few days before. Pat was also looking forward to driving herself to Keswick in Cumbria for the Jazz Festival on 8 May.

Her contribution to North Walsham in Bloom will be sorely missed especially her notorious fund raising Coffee Mornings, which she organised twice a year as well as her Garden Parties every June in aid of Alzheimer’s Care.

In due time we will be organising a suitable tribute to Pat, when we have recovered from the shock of her passing. Pat was a true friend to many, and helped a lot of people, in so many ways. We will miss her.

Dear Margaret

Many thanks to all those in North Walsham East who voted Labour on 2 May. The Labour vote increased by over 240% compared to the last county council elections and the LibDem majority was slashed by two-thirds. Labour also came very close to winning in North Walsham West.

The results show that North Norfolk will be a four horse race at the general election in 2015 - between Labour and three 'Tory' parties.

Only Labour can stand up for ordinary people in tough times. We will continue to campaign in North Walsham East on the issues that are important to local residents - from regeneration of our town centre and safer roads to affordable housing and transport. Please visit www.norfolklabour.co.uk or call 01692 650816, if you have an issue that Labour can help with. Dear Margaret

May I, through your paper, issue a plea to everyone to please support our 1940s dance to be held at The Red Lion in Cromer on 15 June from 7.30pm – 11.45pm at £15 per person.

This is a charity dance to raise important funds for the Veterans Return Fund 2014.

We will make it a memorable evening keeping it 1940s throughout – light refreshments 1940s style (as there is a war on, you know!), music by DJ UXB 40s and 40s singer Sean Andrew is not to be missed. Please book your tickets now to avoid disappointment. We have veterans local to Cromer attending the dance – let’s make this an evening for them to remember. There will be a raffle and 1940s dress would be a big bonus if possible, if not smart dress.

Tickets available from Kathryn Smith on 07903 693905 Yours sincerely Kathryn Smith

GOOD COMPANIONS CLUB

Chairman Stands Down after 12years… and will be very much missed.

Mrs. Peggy Fuller who has been Chairman of the Good Companions Club for 12 years has handed over the Chairmanship to her deputy Mr. Eric Newson, who was voted in at the AGM at the beginning of May.

Peggy took over the Chairmanship of the club at short notice 12 years ago after the then chairman left the area. She has done a wonderful job over the years keeping in touch with those who are not well or those who have left for pastures new.

Her dedication to the Good Companions has been exceptional - before being elected she had been a member for more than 30 years, following on from her mother in law.

Members elected Peggy as the new President.

The Good Companions meet every Friday at the Community Centre in North Walsham from 1.30pm to 4pm. A full programme of events is available.

North Norfolk District Council to appeal wind turbine planning decision North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has announced that it will appeal against the decision of the Planning Inspector regarding the proposed wind turbine at Pond Farm in Bodham.

NNDC believes that approval of the turbine, as proposed, flies in the face of the will of the local community and that the structure, which would be placed in a prominent position and could be seen from over five kilometres away, will form an unwarranted intrusion on an otherwise unspoilt landscape.

This decision could result in further applications for many more land-based wind turbines in the area, failing to take into account either the feelings of local people or the best interests of the North Norfolk tourist economy which draws much of its appeal

inland from our tranquil and unspoilt rural setting. NNDC firmly believes that onshore wind turbines detract from the unique landscape of this beautiful area, in which tourism forms the most essential element of the local economy.

Legal advice has been sought as this matter has wide implications for the economy of North Norfolk. Counsel has concluded that there are arguable grounds for challenging the Inspector’s decision and at a meeting of the Council's Cabinet this morning earlier this month it was decided that NNDC will seek to challenge this decision in the High Court.

NNDC acknowledges the development of off-shore wind turbines, as they have a very different impact. There are clear economic advantages in building offshore wind turbines with their associated on-shore support

structures and NNDC actively encourages the benefits for the local economy from the offshore developments taking place off the coast. Its promotion of the Local Development Order at Egmere to facilitate this industry and build on the jobs already created is indicative of that commitment.

NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Planning, Benjie Cabbell Manners said, “I strongly feel that our locally-based Development Committee is best placed to take into account the facts relating to this area when considering planning decisions of this nature as they have wide implications for the residents of our often quite isolated local rural communities. We regard tourism as a vital component of the economy of North Norfolk and do not wish to see any development which would adversely detract from this offering.”

London to Paris Cycle Ride for GOSH

The time has flown over since I started my fundraising for Great Ormond Street Hospital and to date we have raised close to £2000, with money still coming in. I would like to thank everyone who has helped or donated to my Posh Jumble Sale and Fundraising afternoon, to The Atrium and The Orchard Gardens who let me use their premises and to Sainsburys in North Walsham and Thorpe St Andrews for letting us bag pack for their customers, to Morrisons in Cromer for allowing me to do a static cycle ride, and of course to all the generous people who have given their money to this cause.

Although GOSH is not a local hospital, it serves children in this area, and during my fundraising events I have spoken to many people who have a connection with this great hospital, and who like myself have a child in the family who have benefited from treatment there.

My focus has now switched to training and when I am not in work I seem to be constantly dressed in lycra and spending many hours in the saddle.

I will be setting off from Crystal Palace on Wednesday 5 June, I know it's going to be hard work, and that it's going to hurt, but I am really looking forward to it.

If anyone would like to make a donation please either visit my justgiving page at www.justgiving.com/karensgotwheels or ring me on 07979216289 to make a cash or cheque donation, and help me to raise as much as I can to help GOSH continue their great work. Thank you all. Karen and Tom

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station

Happisburgh RNLI Volunteer Crew were called into action to the aid of a swimmer in trouble off Sea Palling on 5th May. The pagers went off to reports of a swimmer in trouble near reef 4 at Sea Palling. Six minutes later the station’s D-Class lifeboat Spirit of Berkhamsted was en route to the swimmer with Matt Bales at the helm and crew of Charlotte Siely, Jake Munday and Alex Willoughby. On arrival at Sea Palling, the Sea Palling independent Lifeboat had recovered the casualty and taken him to their boathouse. Happisburgh RNLI lifeboat beached and their first aider joined the Sea Palling crew in treating the swimmer for hypothermia and shock, until the arrival of the Ambulance Service. Spirit of Berkhamsted then returned to station and made ready for service at 9pm.

The following day Happisburgh RNLI Volunteer Crew were called into action for the second time in 24hrs to Sea Palling. The pagers went off on 6 May to reports of four children in trouble on reef 4 at Sea Palling. Four minutes later the station’s D-Class lifeboat Spirit of Berkhamsted was en route to the reef with Tim Grimmer at the helm and crew of Christian Larter, and Jake Munday. On arrival at reef 4, Sea Palling, the crew found there was approx 20 people, adults and children, on the reef. The crew approached the reef and gave safety advice on the dangers of the reefs, the crew then liaised with the Coastguards on the beach, who were worried as the tide was coming in and asked the Lifeboat crew to return and ask the group to leave the reef for their own safety. Once all the people had left the reef the crew then returned to station. En route to station the crew saw another group of people on reef 3 and again advised then to return to shore. Spirit of Berkhamsted then returned to station and made ready for service at 1pm.

The reefs at Sea Palling are very inviting, as at low water people can walk and wade to them, but there are many dangers such as being cut off by the tide and slipping or falling into the deep caverns which lie under the top layer. The best advice is to stay off the reefs, and enjoy the sandy beaches.

RNLI Lifeguards will be operating at Sea Palling by the next bank holiday and for the rest of the summer.

Walkers wanted to walk in late spring’s beauty for a great cause on Sunday 9 June from 10am to 2pm in the delightful grounds of Felbrigg Hall

The North Norfolk Group of Diabetes UK have once again chosen the historic National Trust grounds of Felbrigg to hold their annual, fund-raising, sponsored walk. Suitable for all ages and set out as a figure of eight (to give a 3.3km or 2.7km walk) this gentle walk runs through woods and meadows filled with spring bird song and alive with other wildlife – that unusually now includes a resident whooper swan which for two years has not returned in summer to its Iceland breeding grounds. So if you feel you would like to help raise vitally needed funds to help this Diabetes charity continue to fund new research, raise awareness and improve treatments for diabetics, please come along.

North Walsham Table Tennis STAR PAVING SERVICES

Three Titles for North Walsham in Jubilee Season

The 50th season of the Star Paving Services North Norfolk Table Tennis League concluded in spectacular fashion for the home teams with the League and two Cups won by North Walsham. NWSCA’s John Vaughan, Andy Beane, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and John Batchford had been in pole position to win the League Crown for a couple of matches and they confirmed their victory with a match to spare following an 8-2 win against Outlaws. It turns out Outlaw John Hancock’s defeats in the League are a bit like buses – you wait for ages (214 matches) and then two turn up at once. Batchford defeated Hancock 11-5, 9-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-8. There was more good news for NWSCA as they defeated Backhanders 5-0 in the final of the Knockout Doubles Cup. The final took place on neutral ground at Trunch Village Hall and after dropping the first set, NWSCA won the next nine. They then recovFIRST DIVISION Team

ered from a two sets deficit in the fourth battle before winning the fifth in straight to win the Cup.

serving as defeated Halliday in straight. Stone came back from 9-15 adrift in the first set as he won both sets against Price (+2) 21-19. Kirkup (+6) attacked well and took his sixth matchpoint as his 21-12, 21-16 win against Elliott moved NWSCD one win from the Cup. Halliday (+2) was in control against Sawyer as he kept NWSCB alive before Price faced Kirkup (+4). Price saved four set points to set up the first sudden death golden point of the final at 20-20 but then hit a wild smash to hand away the set. Price levelled at 4-4 in the second but Kirkup took the set 21-14 to seal NWSCD’s 5-2 Cup win.
