Charity Golf Day for PSP
Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent
Four local ladies – Sam Hele, Fiona Spencer, Ali Cook and Sally Ling - recently set out on a mission to raise money for Progressive Supernuclear Palsy, and at the same time raise awareness of the illness.
The resulting charity golf day was held at Mundesley Golf Club on Friday 14 June and far exceeded their greatest expectations. The total raised has not yet been finalized but it is in excess of £4500.

Charity Golf Day for PSP
Continued from front cover...
Joint organiser Sam Hele continues ‘The Golf Day was a huge success. The sun was shining, the atmosphere was great and all the golf teams had great fun. Some played better golf than others but all those playing thought the course at Mundesley was in fantastic condition.
The money raised will be used by the PSP Association to help research the disease and to help support families and carers of those suffering with the disease’.
‘PSP is a degenerative illness that destroys nerve cells in the brain. There are about 10,000 people with PSP in the UK. There is neither a cure nor any effective treatment, but there is still a lot we can do to help people with PSP, and their carers, obtain the best possible care’.
‘People's generosity has been overwhelming. Sam’s mother Marion, who is also great friends with Fiona, Ali and Sally, has had PSP for seven years. She is now in a wheelchair and has gone from being a vibrant independent woman to being dependent on someone for her everyday living.
The ladies would like to thank Mundesley Golf Club for letting them host their competition at the course. Thanks also to the hole sponsors, those who gave raffle prizes and auction prizes, and to all those who have sent in donations. Thank you to Sharon Cox Adi from Relax driving school for bringing her cars to the event and setting up the’ guess the mileage in the Audi’ competition, to Kevin Abbs from Crayford and Abbs for running the ‘guess how many balloons in the car’ competition, to Lake & Nicholls for sponsoring the half way house and finally to all their lovely friends for donating delicious delights for the golfers to have half way round.
If any readers feel they would like to help, donations would be much appreciated and may be sent to Mundesley Golf club c/o Ali Cook Tel 01263 720095.

Go Farah!
North Walsham’s British Transplant Games competitor, Farah Bycroft is hoping to compete once again at the Games to be held in Sheffield in August.
To take part in this amazing weekend, Farah’s family needs to raise at least £350. This does not cover all the costs, but is a yearly contribution. The transplant nurses who head Farah’s children’s team work very hard throughout the year to ensure the kids have a wonderful chance to celebrate a second chance of life through sport and to meet their transplant friends old and new.
To help raise funds, six year old Farah, a liver transplant recipient, will once again be taking part in the 3km Donor Run at the Games, but if you wish to kindly donate please visit www.justgiving.com/gofarah where you can also read Farah’s story. You may also text a donation, (details on the Just Giving page in Updates). Hopefully, Farah will reach her target of £600 and be able to compete and bring home another gold medal as she did last year from Medway! Some of you may remember Farah proudly showing off her medal in a September 2012 issue of The North Walsham Times. On behalf of Farah, her family and the children’s transplant team, thank you for your support. Every penny donated is gratefully received.
For more information on the British Transplant Games, please visit www.transplantsport.org.uk
To sign up for organ donation and for more information, please visit www.organdonation.nhs.uk

News from the White Horse, Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon Summer’s here, although no-one seems to have told the weather!
We are getting busier by the day and are all looking forward to a great summer season serving customers old and new.
We are planning another charity car wash raising money for our charity of the year, Nelson’s Journey, on Saturday 27 July from 8am and have decided to serve Hot Bacon Rolls as well as our usual White Horse Breakfast, so while the volunteers wash your car you can enjoy some good food and a chat. From 10am we will be offering a slice of delicious homemade cake and a coffee, so if you misss breakfast you can still enjoy a snack while waiting for your car to be washed.
Our usual Bar and Restaurant Menu will also be available from 12noon, so why not make it lunch at the White Horse? Bring your friends and their cars and turn it into a car wash party!
The Car Wash is just £5 per car with all proceeds going to the charity. Car Wash opens at 8am until 2pm

North Walsham Town Twinning Visit May 2013 Several homes in and around North Walsham should have returned to a degree of normality after the departure of our Twin Town visitors from Friesenried, Bavaria in Germany on Tuesday 28 May.
They arrived at Stansted on 23 May to sunshine then encountered rain and even hail during our stop in Saffron Walden but arrived in North Walsham, as ever, to the warmest of welcomes. The members and hosts had provided an excellent welcome buffet and after speeches from both chairpersons and the town Mayor everyone dispersed to prepare for an exciting visit over the next six days.
A day visit on Friday took place at Blickling Hall for guided walks through the house and grounds. As ever impeccable planning made sure that it only poured with rain whilst on the coach and touring the house and the water was turned off for the tour of the grounds! Our visitors were especially impressed when they were taken to see the bluebells.
Saturday was a trip to Peterborough for guided walks given by two group leaders. The weather was terrific and there was plenty of activity in the city centre to keep our visitors entertained. The cathedral, of course, was a high point for them.
Sunday is always a free day spent with hosts who organise outings, to meet other family members and a regular feature are the many gatherings for visitors and hosts for evening meals and BBQs. Both committees meet to discuss the programme and dates for our visit to Germany in 2014 (July is the preferred option at this time). Dates will be confirmed soon.
The guided tour of the Maritime History of Kings Lynn on Monday was praised by all and the standard of the Kings Lynn guides was outstanding. As in Peterborough there was free time for our friends to explore and shop as the fit took them. Back with their hosts there was time for a wash and brush up before reporting to the Community Centre for our farewell dinner and dance. As is traditional it finished at 11pm to Auld Lang Syne. Then home to pack and bed for an early morning departure to Stansted for their flight home. I always feel these six days are the quickest to pass in the year.
I always like to finish with a few facts and figures and of course to thank the many people and organisations that help to make these exchanges the success they invariably are.
We had 35 visitors of which 12 were here for the first time. Six youngsters from 10 to 14 years old were among the group - four of the youngsters were entertained by the ATC at Broadland High School and had a great evening.
The committee would like to thank Waitrose for sponsoring the arrival at Stansted with a drink and snack, The Cockerel for the Monday farewell evening catering, The Keel Band for the music and calling the dances (great fun) and the Community Centre staff. All was helped to run smoothly transport wise by Marrets Chariots and we thank them and the drivers for their good work. Finally all hosts, members, group leaders and the committee have earned a pat on the back for yet another well organised and event free visit.
Now it is time to take breath then begin preparations for 2014. If, as is hoped, the above has filled you full of curiosity and a desire to join in, please contact Margaret on 01692 404114 (mornings) to find out more. To survive for a further 32 years new members are always being sought.
Hillside Open Day
Hillside was founded in 1995 and, with Martin Shaw as our patron, we are now home to around 2000 rescued animals. All our animals receive excellent basic care and our ability to save so many is attributable to the loyal help of our supporters, without whom we would not have been able to turn a vision into reality.
It has been a very busy and challenging year for Hillside. Last year was one of the wettest we have ever known and then followed by a very long winter, we had to use far more bales of straw and hay, which of course resulted in extremely high bills which stretched our finances to the limit.
Fortunately, summer is here and our Shire Horse Sanctuary at West Runton is now open and welcoming visitors. These Open Days will help to generate extra pennies for our rescued animals.
If you would like to come and see us we are open most days from 10am - 5pm
Please visit www.hillside.org.uk for full details, or call 01603 736200. North Walsham Times 425 June 29th 2013

New General Manager for Cromer Pier
Openwide Coastal Ltd is delighted to announce the appointment of Rebecca Wass to the role of General Manager of Comer Pier and Pavilion Theatre.
Rebecca joins Openwide Coastal to lead the growth of Seaside Special and all the Pier’s trading operations into new markets and comes with a wealth of experience in the local area and throughout communities in Norfolk. With a solid background in theatre management with Live Nation at both the Beck Theatre and Sunderland Empire, Rebecca has also gained experience within the museum and attractions industries and is well placed to optimise all elements of the unique and exceptional attraction of Cromer Pier.
Openwide Coastal manage the Pier and Pavilion theatre on behalf of North Norfolk District Council and produce the UK’s oldest and most successful full summer season variety show, Seaside Special, now in its 36th year and still performing to over 45,000 people every summer.
John Lee, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said, “The Pier and Pavilion Theatre are important not only for Cromer but for the whole of the north Norfolk coast. They are iconic attractions, providing enjoyment and entertainment for tens of thousands of local residents and visitors alike, throughout the year. The council looks forward to continuing its excellent relationship with Openwide Coastal Ltd, who manages the Pier and Pavilion Theatre on our behalf, and wishes Rebecca every good fortune in her new role.”
Rebecca’s diverse career has also seen her training and developing young people throughout many differing communities in Norfolk and her network of contacts with community groups will prove to be a great opportunity for the Pier and our Seaside Special show to reach into new areas of the
community and encourage a new generation of lovers of variety and “live” family entertainment.

‘green’ products, environmentally-friendly innovations and techniques, and local produce.
In this age of austerity, Greenbuild promises to provide a ‘one-stopshop’ for anyone looking to lead a low carbon, low cost lifestyle. But it’s also a great day out for those wanting a fun-filled day packed with free entertainment for the kids, fantastic local food – and hopefully some September sunshine!

NORTH WALSHAM & BRADFIELD FLOWER CLUB
As lots of delighted visitors will testify, the Club's Emerald Celebrations reached "full bloom" recently in St Nicholas Church, where much of "Norfolk's Finest" was celebrated through the medium of floral art.
The celebrations, which gave a welcome boost to the Tower Appeal Fund, welcomed hundreds of visitors to enjoy the flowers at the preview buffet, the brass band concert and the well attended civic service on Sunday. As one person commented,
we don't always appreciate the very large and wonderful building we have in our midst and it must be preserved at all costs. Around £60,000 is needed urgently to carry out survey and repairs on the Tower. Many visitors kindly completed the Appeal Donation Forms which were in the church all weekend and if you too would like more details about how you can help - please contact me and I will put you in touch with the Appeal Fund.

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM
The Flower Club is planning a coach trip to
Our spring planting is just about complete with just a few small areas to finish as I write.
Our ladies have pulled out all the stops to keep to our rather tight schedule, and other interests and commitments have been put on hold for the last three weeks whilst all this hard work has been ongoing. The organizers of In Bloom would like them all to know how much this is appreciated. The weather has not been particularly good to us as young plants – just like everyone else - do not like cold winds, still with a bit of luck they should be really good in a few weeks time.
We would like to say a big thank you to John who gave us a large cash donation whilst we were working in the precinct a few days ago. We fully appreciate he wishes to remain anonymous, but we would like to thank him for his kindness.
We are arranging a ‘special’ coffee morning on the 22 August in St
The Paston Tomb by Tina Soldan (from the club)
Holkham Hall & Garden on 8 August, leaving North Walsham at 10am and leaving Holkham at 4pm. If you are interested in coming along please contact me.

Benets Hall to raise funds for a tree to be planted at Bluebell Pond in memory of Pat Stott who died in April. We have already been promised some really lovely prizes and are hoping for a really brilliant day. Any unused money will be donated to the various charities Pat worked so tirelessly for.
We would also like to thank a few nameless people, some of whom are around and about very early in the mornings, who replace the plants they find laying on or around the beds - these have been pulled up by very thoughtless selfish people the night before.
Also at this point I would like to make a plea for people who allow their dogs free run in the Church Yard not to allow them to scrap our plants out of the beds. A day of laying on the surface and drying out is usually the end of them.
We hope everyone in North Walsham has a good summer and enjoys the flowers.

Members had a lovely time out at their Spring outing at Scarborough Hill Hotel last month enjoying a lovely meal with good weather. They would like to thank staff of the hotel who ‘were very obliging and looked after us very well’.
The doors at the club opened again on Thursday 6 June where members were entertained once again by The Squeegees, a two-man band who sang a medley of songs of old sing-a-longs from the 60s to the 80s.
The second hand stall and raffle cashed in £47 and local poet Diane Berthelot read a poem. A cheque for £426 was also presented by Waitrose. Members would like to thank shoppers who placed their green discs at the checkout to raise this cash.
Can you feel the force?
Millfield Primary School in North Walsham certainly did on Wednesday 22 May when they were invaded by aliens and robots from outer space during a special Middle phase assembly.
The hall was a buzz of excitement as the children, who had designed their ‘space’ themed costumes for the special space fashion show, exhibited their creations along the stage.
The performance was accompanied by space themed music and many of the parents who had been invited along sat dancing and clapping the whole way through. The show was the finale to their topic work on space which they have been learning about this term.
Mrs Price, a teaching assistant and staff governor, said “All of the creations were completely different to one another which was amazing as there were around 70 children who took part. It was great to see the children and parents enjoying themselves and I couldn’t believe that ‘Darth Vader’ made an appearance and even took to the stage!”
Marsh report into region's ambulance service confirms concerns North Norfolk Labour Party’s Act on Ambulances campaigners have welcomed Anthony Marsh’s report into the East of England Ambulance Service, which has confirmed their concerns first raised by the campaign nearly 12 months ago.
The report confirms campaigners were right to start the petition (now signed by 11,000 people) against cuts to Double Staffed Ambulances (DSA), particularly as the report points out the push towards Rapid Response Vehicles has left too many vehicles serving patients without being able to take them to hospital. It says the Trust is providing an insufficient number of DSAs, and that more are required.
The local Labour Party believes this report is another indication of the growing A&E crisis
14
across the country, and Anthony Marsh attributes some handover problems experienced in the East of England to problems across the country.
Denise Burke, chair of North Norfolk Labour Party and an Act on Ambulances campaigner, said: “We set up the Act on Ambulances campaign 12 months ago with real concerns about the proposals to cut our ambulance service’s budget, and with the aim to halt the move to reduce the number of ambulances on the street. This report confirms that a reliance on Rapid Response Vehicles and private ambulance overtime has taken the Trust in the wrong direction, and agrees we need more ambulances in our region to address response times.
"The report also confirms our fears about those
at the top of the East of England Ambulance Service Trust, who we presented our petition to last year. They did not listen then, and I believe the directors across the board should be reconsidering their position."
"At the same time complacent MPs in government cannot pass the buck either, when their reorganisation of the NHS and cuts are contributing to a growing A&E crisis across the country. In his report Anthony Marsh confirms this is a challenging time for the NHS, and that problems with handovers at our hospitals are not exclusive to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital."
"We will continue to campaign on this important issue and encourage residents to continue to send us their stories to www.actonambulances.co.uk.”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Firstly, a progress report on Millie the little cat mentioned last time. On a follow up visit her vet was so delighted with the progress she had made that she decided it was safe for her to be neutered. The operation was carried out the same day and Millie is now back with her fosterer and by the time you read this she will also have been vaccinated and chipped and ready to be put up for adoption. Wonderful news for this delightful little cat, who has battled to fitness with the care and attention she has received from her fosterer vet. Roger, another young cat has also been causing concern but happily, he too, is now up for adoption. He originally came into care with six other cats and had settled into a new home as the only cat. However, after a few weeks, he developed balance problems and holds his head to one side. Because he had an eye infection while previously in care, antibiotics were prescribed to see if the problem improved. In the meantime his new owner fell over him and was concerned this could happen again so it was agreed that we should take him back. As there was no improvement to his condition further investigations were necessary. As his symptoms indicated that he could have FIP blood tests were taken and thankfully although initial results indicated this could be the problem the results of all the blood tests ruled this out. Tests were also
undertaken for FIV and FELV and these were also negative. X-rays were then taken to see whether the problems were caused by problems in the inner ear and clearly indicated this was not the case. His vet concluded that the problem could either be caused by a tumor or a vascular bleed. A course of steroids combined with antibiotics were prescribed and his response to these indicate he did have a vascular bleed which has caused some scarring, the cause of the balance problem. Now of low dose steroids we are hoping that in time his balance will be restored, although there are no guarantees. Roger is now looking for a new home. He is a very friendly lad, who loves receiving a fuss, rolls over for tummy rubs and loves other cats. We all love him. If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call. If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

We opened the doors to our new practice in Cromer on 3rd June. After a few teething problems with the computer systems, all seems to be going well. We have had many visitors through the doors, some with appointments and some to just have a look, we welcome them all! The purpose built surgery has 3 consulting rooms, a laboratory www.miramarvets.co.uk and will eventually house a large pet shop at one end. Sometime in the future we will be adding a theatre and kennel rooms so we can operate at the site too. We would like to welcome Ruth Farall to our team at Cromer, she will be running the practice and pet shop and with past experience in the shop environment and knowledge of veterinary products, she will be happy to advise you. North Walsham Library
“Open Studies art work has been fantastic! I’ve been to see it three times and told all my friends. Each time I’ve noticed something new which has inspired me with my own art projects”.
This was one happy customer’s response to the latest Open Studio taster display at North Walsham Library which showcased local artists work. The library would like to thank all the artists who exhibited and help set up. Bernie Marfleet was the organiser.
Shakespeare comes to Mundesley During the last week in July, The Mundesley Players will be staging Shakespeare’s most well known romantic comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in the Coronation Hall.
A cast some twenty strong, aged between 13 and 60+, are currently busy rehearsing and working on the text. This is real community theatre, since half the cast are school pupils and the rest are adults.
‘The Dream’ intertwines the misadventures of two young couples who escape from Athena to the nearby woods and the rehearsals of a group of local craftsmen or ‘mechanicals’, whose play of Pyramus and Thisbe will be performed at the wedding celebration of Duke Theseus and Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons.
Shakespeare enjoyed the concept of ‘a play within a play’ and this is the best-loved example. Linking all the human to-ing and fro-ing are the interventions of Oberon, King of the Fairies, and his rascally aide, Puck, whose efforts add comic confusion. Bottom the Weaver gains an asses head and the temporary affections of Titania, Queen of the Fairies.
Jack and Daisy Oldfield with their mother Jessica and artist Suzanne Lakin
Two of the artists exhibiting, Suzanne Lakin and Maureen Cherry, also ran a Postcard Making event on 28 May as part of Adult Learner’s Week which was open to all ages. Everyone who came enjoyed themselves and learned new skills and lots of ideas, thanks to the artists. “I couldn’t believe the results from using such simple things”, said Library Manager, Sue Lawrence, “unfortunately they took them all home!”
Several familiar faces will be seen among the actors, together with some exciting new talent. A small group of unaccompanied singers will provide musical atmosphere. The play is being directed by David Ross, and performances will take place on 25, 26 and 27 July at 7.30pm. Tickets will be available from 6 July.

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb sees community volunteers in action
North Norfolk Member of Parliament Norman Lamb met with Community Service Volunteers earlier this month to discuss the work of CSV volunteers in the area. CSV has supported adults with learning disabilities to volunteer in West Norfolk for 24 years. A Big Lottery Reaching Communities grant given to CSV in January enabled the project to be extended across other areas of Norfolk, including the North Norfolk constituency.
Visiting the CSV project in North Walsham, Liberal Democrat MP Norman Lamb commented “The team is doing brilliant work. I really hope anyone who is interested in volunteering with the CSV gets in touch and gets involved.”
CSV supports local volunteer mentors to enable adults with learning disabilities to train and volunteer themselves in their communities, with some people eventually progressing into paid employment. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer mentor or anyone with a learning disability who would like support to volunteer or access employment can contact Yvonne Ogden at the CSV on 01366 385839 or yogden@csv.org.uk for more information. Top of the Class
The summer repertory season at Sheringham Little Theatre opens on Saturday, 6 July with a journey back to school. John Godber’s comedy runs until Monday, July 15 and then returns between Saturday, August 3 and Tuesday, August 6.
Set in a high school, the play takes a wry look at the education system. It tells the story of three students and their various trials and tribulations – both in class and in life, explains Norwich-based director Warren Cathrine.
“I started out with the theatre when I was still at school, taking part in the drama groups, and then as a workshop leader,” says Ryan, who comes from North Walsham but is in his final year at the renowned Rose Bruford drama college, in London. “This is my first professional role and it is very exciting to be taking it on in Sheringham.”
Director of the Little Theatre, Debbie Thompson, adds: “Ryan took part in our first major production, Bugsy Malone, when he was younger so it now feels as if he has come full circle. With his involvement and Warren’s, there will be a very Norfolk feel to Teechers.”
“I have directed Teechers before and am looking forward to doing it again,” he says. “I think it’s a great play because, despite being written in the 1980s, it is still very relevant today. It also tackles a subject that I am passionate about – education.
“I like the sophistication of the play. John Godber tells such good stories and even though the play is humorous, there is still a strong message behind it.”
Warren, who brought Blackout to Sheringham in April, is looking forward to working more closely with the venue.

One of the challenges of the production will
be having just three cast members playing 20 characters. Madeleine Brolly and Sarah Langton will appear in the fast-moving production alongside Ryan Starling.
Sainsbury’s North Walsham gets it in the bag and supports their local community
Sainsbury’s North Walsham has presented Friends of the Belfry School, Overstrand with a Community Grant for £300.

“I love the theatre – it is so efficient and professional while also being relaxed,” he says. “I can’t wait to see Teechers staged there as part of the summer rep and feel very honoured that it will be opening the whole season.”

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER THE NORFOLK NURSERY NETWORK herbaceous and climbers, many rare hellebores, old roses and salvias
A leaflet setting out full details of opening hours etc. for each nursery is available from Tourist Board offices and in this leaflet Alan Gray, from Radio Norfolk’s Gardening programme states ‘Anyone can grow and sell plants but members of the Norfolk Nursery Network have the expertise and knowledge of their subject to offer the very high standards that are required to become a member of this august group’. ‘When you buy from a nursery affiliated to the NNN, you are assured of quality and value and your purchases will have been grown to the highest quality’.
• Hoecroft Plants, Wood Norton – Ornamental grasses, variegated and coloured foliage plants
• Norfolk Herbs, Dillington, Dereham – Herbs, scented pelargoniums, bay trees and terracotta
It may have been an awful winter and disappointing spring for us gardeners but we should spare a thought for the specialist plant nurseries in our area. The large garden centres can survive such difficulties because they have diversified their products and have restaurants, cafes and similar attractions which bring in customers regardless of the weather but this is not so easy for the specialist Norfolk Nurseries that just concentrate on producing a huge range of plants and they need our support and custom.
We are very fortunate in Norfolk to have a network of specialist nurseries who have joined forces under the title ‘The Norfolk Nursery Network’ to grow the best plants for our garden and offer expert advice and service. Between them, these eleven nurseries have more than 16,000 species and varieties of the finest quality plants available, some of which can be ordered online.
The network comprises the following nurseries • Creake Plant Centre, South Creake, Fakenham – Wide range of shrubs,
• The Plantsman’s Preference, Diss – Hardy geraniums, ornamental grasses, unusual perennials and woodland plants
• Reads Nursery – Growers of high quality fruit trees
Some of the members of the NNN will have stalls selling plants at the following events (Please check with the nursery website or telephone if you want to ensure that a specific nursery is attending)
• The Romantic Garden Nursery , Swannington – A specialist nursery of mature trees and shrubs, topiary, terracotta and lead planters
• Thorncroft Clematis, Reymerston – Extensive range of clematis
• Sandringham Flower Show, Wednesday 31 July
• Urban Jungle, Old Costessey – Palms, tree ferns, bamboo, bananas, cannas, gingers and grasses
• West Acre Gardens Summer Showcase, Saturday 10 August • Norfolk Plant Heritage Autumn Plant Fair, Hethersett Village Hall, Sunday 25 August
• Walnut Tree Garden Nursery, Rockland St. Peter – Herbaceous perennials, ornamental trees, shrubs and roses
• Specialist Plant Day, Pensthorpe, Saturday 14 September
• West Acre Gardens, West Acre, King’s Lynn – Wide range of plants including an extensive range of alpines
The NNN has its own website
www.norfolknurseries.net
• Woodgate Nursery, Aylsham – Over 600 varieties of perennials; shrubs, trees and climbers, fruit trees and bushes, seeds and bulbs, annuals and veg. Plants

North Walsham Photographic Group
If you went down in the woods today you were in for a big surprise... actually it was Sheringham Park on the evening of Tuesday 28 May.
Thirteen members of the North Walsham Photographic Group visited the grounds on one of the programmed club events. Armed with cameras, tripods, monopods (and an umbrella!) the members sallied forth – the mission was to collect a set of three images with a theme of either ‘Red, White and Blue’ or ‘the letter R’ (rhododendrons, roots, reflections etc)
Members then took their best three images along for discussion to the club meeting on 25 June at the Atrium, North Walsham. Experienced club members were on hand to help the less confident members and a very pleasant evening was had by all.

Norman Lamb signs up to help improve phone signal in North Norfolk North Norfolk’s Member of Parliament is backing a new campaign to improve mobile phone reception in the area.
The Countryside Alliance is asking people to become phone detectives this summer and help it map real phone reception rates across the UK and Norman Lamb is behind the cause.
North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “Everyone pays the same for their phone package but phone reception is very variable and many people are not getting a good deal. I have been pressing phone operators to improve their coverage in North Norfolk and I welcome additional efforts to get a better service for mobile phone customers in North Norfolk.”
North Walsham Farmer’s Market
North Walsham Farmers' Market closed its doors for the last time on Saturday 8 June.
The inclement weather of the last two years meant that some of the seasonal producers were unable to attend this year and, with falling customer attendance, it was decided to call it a day.
July
Parts of North Norfolk suffer from poor mobile phone reception. Norman Lamb has led efforts to get improvements to mobile phone signals in communities such as Sheringham and other parts of North Norfolk.
The Countryside Alliance is asking people to download the free RootMetrics app onto their smartphone or tablet and use it while they are at home as well as while they are out and about.
The app tests the strength of their signal and automatically records the result. The information will be used to make the case for improving mobile reception, especially in isolated rural areas.
For further information on how to use the app and to see results so far, visit: www.rootmetrics.com/uk
The months have slipped by, It is now July. Two larks are soaring high in the sky, Blue cornflowers are growing beside the stream, I could sit here all day and happily dream. A blue butterfly hovers and alights on my arm, In a moment she’ll move, so I have to keep calm. I pick up my book, A grass snake slithers by, It’s time to leave, And I give a sad sigh.

Time to Interact with Cromer Pier
Earlier this month Cromer Pier and the Pavilion Theatre announced the introduction of their brand new website, providing you with everything you need to know about their great shows and fantastic live entertainment. It's informative, it's colourful, it's easy to navigate and extremely user friendly in every sense.
Two years ago Cromer moved more into the electronic age by introducing the chance to book show tickets via the internet – this was extremely well received and continues to be very successful with lots of people enjoying this method of communication and asking us to offer more via the electronic route.
This year therefore we introduced a regular monthly e-newsletter called spotlight on Cromer Pier where registered customers who wish to receive it can keep up to date with the gossip and what’s going on at the pier and in the theatre throughout the year.
By visiting the new website you can interact with us further by signing-up to our Customer Loyalty Card where patrons can earn valuable points towards some fantastic rewards every time they make

a purchase be it in Coffee Reef, the Pavilion Bar, Footprints Gift Shop or when they book a ticket at the Box Office.
The site encourages you to share numerous items with friends on Facebook and also to tweet about Cromer Pier via the Twitter Link.
Also new this year is Cromer Pier’s very own YouTube Channel where you can view backstage interviews with visiting acts and cast members of Seaside Special. One of our recent videos even made it onto a recent episode of ‘Have I Got News for You’ following the frenzy of it appearing on both Facebook and Twitter feeds.
With 510 seats the theatre also presents a high-quality mix of comedy, music, dance, opera, musicals and community shows throughout the season. The pier is open to the public all year around and this includes many of its facilities such as Coffee Reef Gelateria, the Pavilion Bar, Footprints Gift Shop and the Box Office.
As well as welcoming visitors to the area, the Pavilion Theatre is a resource for the local community and the theatre welcomes community hires as part of our diverse programme of events.
Happisburgh Lifeboat Station
Happisburgh RNLIvolunteers leapt into action to help save the life of young man, who was found floating face down, after being hit on the head by jet-ski on Sunday 16 June.
Volunteers at Happisburgh Lifeboat Station were just finishing their morning’s exercise, when they were alerted to the incident that had happed just off the station ramp. A young man in his early 20’s had fallen off his jet-ski which then hit him on his head, he was spotted laying face down by his brother who pulled him ashore and called for help.
Tony Phenix (helm) and Sean Ferguson(crew) went straight onto the beach and gave first aid; John Fryer (shore crew) called the Ambulance service and with his information the Ambulance service sent the Air Ambulance and a Ambulance. Cubitt Siely (training Co-ordinator) also assisted.
The patient was given oxygen and had his wound dressed, he was immobilised and put in the lifeboat stretcher to be moved off the beach.
All four of the lifeboat volunteers treated and monitored the patient, updating the ambulance service of his condition. The Air Ambulance arrived at 1pm and the crew took a full history from the RNLI volunteers and carried out their assessment before flying the patient to A & E at N & N Hospital.
Happisburgh and Mundesley Coastguard, Police and land Ambulance also attended the scene. Happisburgh RNLI were glad to put their training to good use even though the Lifeboat was not needed. North Walsham Times 425 June 29th 2013
St Andrews Methodist Church Flower Festival
The annual flower festival of St Andrews Methodist Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham takes place from Thursday 4th to Sunday 7th July.
The festivals have been run for over 40 years and over the years they have grown significantly in both quality of exhibits, size and attendance to become arguably the best festival in Norfolk. Last year the festival attracted well over 3000 visitors with several coach parties visiting this truly remarkable event. A total of nearly £14,000 was raised for church funds with a sizeable donation given to Sheringham RNLI. This charity received the most votes from visitors to the festival who were invited to select from several choices of charities.
Every year the floral arrangements of the festival are designed to a specific theme. Last year’s theme was “reaching out” with floral arrangements depicting many ways that this is done – from the light of a lighthouse reaching out to guide and direct to the many ways that God’s love reaches out to everyone. Our photos from last year’s festival give a flavour of the

Examples of these stalls include plants, jigsaws, books, arts and crafts, souvenirs and gifts, jewellery, Stained Glass Art, Christian bookstall, Traidcraft stall, quality bric-a-brac, a raffle and various quizzes.
quality of the exhibitions and the attention to detail the designers take in covering their subject.
This year’s Festival theme, “We have a lot to be thankful for” will be depicted by more than 30 large stunning arrangements and we are confident that the designers of the displays will once again excel in their interpretation of the theme. Throughout the Festival background music, played mainly by organists, will add to the ambiance of the event.
Entry to the Festival is free, the money being
Catering forms a major part of the Festival and many past visitors have complimented us on the quality of light lunches, cream teas and the extensive choice of cakes that are on offer. Overall a visit to St Andrew`s Flower Festival can be considered a great day out.

Mothers' Union
In June we welcomed Jeanette Boardman to our meeting who spoke of her time as a Police Support Worker and a local Lay Reader. She talked of the various aspects of her work and how she felt that it was a privilege to act as a bridge between the church and the community.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday 10 September at 2.30pm in the St Nicholas Room when Zoe Mitchell will tell us about the period that she spent in South Africa as part of her gap year. Visitors and new members will be most welcome.
Antiques & Collectors Fair GRESHAM'S JULY 7th
Nelson Events antique events feature regularly on BBC TV Bargain Hunt and Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is, is again at Holt with their annual antique event.
Antique dealers from all parts of the UK are again booked to be at this years event.
For further information please contact Ann Herd on 01692 402705.
Two July Festivals on North Norfolk’s Poppy Line
Vintage cars, vintage buses, vintage steam and diesel trains. Over the first weekend in July (Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th) the Poppy Line’s Vintage Transport Festival will bring around 300 classic cars and buses to North Norfolk. Centred on Holt Station, the event includes free trips on some of the historic buses. Dinner will be served on the crack “North Norfolkman” train on the Saturday, leaving Sheringham at 7pm. The price per head (including travel) is £46.50, drinks extra. Advance booking essential – call 01263 820 800.
The railway’s 89-years-old wooden-bodied train will be running at the Festival, and every day until 14th July. This train pioneered the use of the articulated technology used to link carriages on today’s Eurostar high-speed trains – though speeds on the Poppy Line will be a little more modest! Good news is that there’ll be no extra charge for travelling on this historic train – the normal fares of £11 adult, £10 senior, £7.50 child 5-15 (under fives are free) and £37 family (2 adults + 2 children or 3 adults + 1 child) apply throughout the month. Tickets give unlimited hop-on, hop-off travel all day and include free admission to the fascinating William Marriott Museum at Holt Station.
The 12th annual North Norfolk Railway Beer Festival takes place at Sheringham Station and runs from Friday 19th July to Sunday 21st July. Entry is free, and over 100 real ales, ciders and perries will be on offer in the marquee bar on platform 2. The bar will be open (while stocks last!) from 11am to 11pm on the Friday and Saturday, and till 4.30pm on the Sunday – though the first two days usually provide the best choice of beers. Hot food will be served day and evening, there’ll be live entertainment every day, and souvenir glasses and polo shirts will be on sale. The sounds and smells of the steam age give this great BeerFest a very special atmosphere; and it’s a meeting place for real ale fans from far and wide, with at least one London publican making the pilgrimage.
Added this year, are the many leading International VINTAGE dealers and collectors.
Antique Roadshow, a free appraisals and valuation of any item or collections is available from 10am. Large items or collections that cannot be carried should be photographed for the valuation. Anyone who either considers insuring or selling their items is advised to obtain a true and independent valuation, offered at this event. The event is open from 9am to 4pm, and includes free car parking and catering, including Messrs Graves Famous Hog roast and Wolf's Brewery.

Murder is afoot at Sheringham Little Theatre when the summer repertory season continues with Deathtrap.
a howling storm, an unreliable power supply, a Dutch psychic with a sense of impending disaster, and some violent set-pieces.”
Helen says the play, which stars Rupert Mason Loraine Metcalf, Joshua Jefferies, Cornelius Garrett and Rebecca Todd, looks set to be great fun.
Ira Levin’s dark thriller opens on Wednesday 17 July and runs until Thursday 25 July, before returning from Monday 19 August and Saturday 24 August.
“The challenge for me as the director is to maintain the balance of comedy and thriller, so that there are both laughs and screams,” she admits. “I am delighted to be returning to Sheringham Little Theatre after the success of The Norman Conquests last year, to tackle my first thriller!
The gripping tale focuses on former writer Sidney Bruhl and his thoughts of murder when presented with a script by an unknown playwright. There follows an intricately woven plot, which transports the audience through a rollercoaster ride of thrills, twists and frights, says director Helen Leblique.
“I am also really looking forward to working with several of the actors I directed last year,as well as some new ones. One of the newcomers to Sheringham is Joshua Jefferies, who I directed at East 15 acting school a couple of years ago. Josh studied acting
“Deathtrap contains, as Charles Spencer put it - reviewing a London production a couple of years ago - ‘more twists than a bucket of snakes,’ at the same time as it wittily deconstructs the conventions of the thriller genre. Audiences can look forward to

and stage combat, and I anticipate putting his skills in stage violence to good use in Deathtrap.”
Josh said he was also excited to being involved in the thriller: “Not only am I performing in two very different thrilling plays and working with two amazing directors, but I also help choreograph and perform some stage combat. This, along with the rest of the action, will leave the audience stuck to their seats wanting more!"

SEASIDE SPECIAL SPECTACULAR
The summer season of Seaside Special opened on Saturday 15th June, with a dazzling spectacular performance of variety entertainment.
The first of two shows, show 1, is called Variety Dotcom. All concerned can be very proud of this entertaining show.
Di Cooke, who devised, directed and choreographed the show has created a highly professional and entertaining show along with Nigel Hogg who is the musical director.
Dain Cordean, Danny Posthill and Jo Little linked the whole show with skill, comedy, fantastic impressions and magical moments.
The male lead singer David Jon O'Neill, The boy from "Oz" is tremendous and gave not only fine solo efforts but also featured well in the brilliant whole company scenes.
Jo Little kept us laughing with her own brand of Yorkshire humour as well as delighting us with her fantastic singing.
Last but by no means least the fantastic Seaside Special dancers gave an enthusiastic and high
octane performance supported by the delightful and talented children from Marlene's School of Dancing. They always give us the local "wow"factor, and this performance was no exception.
The scenery, Ian Westbrook, costumes, Laura Whyte, and lighting, Amanda Hill, are excellent and add to the complete enjoyment of this superb show.
This is a great show of which the Pavilion Theatre, Cromer Pier can be truly proud.
We are now looking forward to show 2, Strictly Seaside.
Celebrating 36 years as one of England’s best-loved summer variety shows Seaside Special is a rich blend of comedy, music, song and dance featuring colourful costumes and stunning stage sets.
Cromer’s iconic Pier and Pavilion Theatre delivers that extra magic to a show that has an ever- increasing fan base bringing together people of all ages who have one thing in common, the love of variety.
In today’s TV and gadget world it is a rare treat to sit and watch a live performance where the cast interact with the audience and bring an extra sparkle to the Show.
This year’s Seaside Special features a diverse blend of music from today’s charts, top West End ballads and the classics. Add to this a mix of comedy, illusions, impressions and dance routines and you have the show. In fact you have two shows – ‘Variety Dotcom’ and ‘Strictly Seaside’ promising something for everyone.

Over the years Seaside Special has helped forge the careers of many of today’s performers and even today is giving new talent a chance to perform in front of an audience and enjoy that feeling that can only be found in live theatre.
Steve Cutbush Managing Director of Openwide Coastal said “I am very excited about this year’s Seaside Special. I believe we have created two very different shows that will bring out the best in all our artists and be a colourful and memorable experience for our audiences of all ages. This year we have introduced a Family Fun Saturday Matinee by adding a little bit more for the younger members of our audience. We understand the need to encourage families and young people to come and see the show and have created some great value family packages to help facilitate this. It is important for the future of live variety that we inspire the younger generation as they are as much a part of the future of live variety as the Pavilion Theatre is as the venue to one of the top variety shows in the country - Seaside Special”.
Seaside Special runs until 28 September Tuesday – Saturday at 7.30pm with Matinee performances starting on Tuesday 2nd July at 2.30pm

Alderman Peel High School 50th Anniversary Celebrations - calling all ex students & staff Alderman Peel High School will be celebrating its 50th anniversary from midday to 5pm on Saturday 21 September this year, at the school.
There will be old school photographs to view, with local charity and craft stalls to support. The school will be open to show how it has developed and changed over the past five decades.
In the evening, at 7.3pm, there is a ticket only social event (£5). An order form can be downloaded from the school website. Music by the popular 6Ts band. Hog roast and desserts available to purchase separately.
North Walsham Times 425 June 29th 2013
The school was named after Alderman Sam Peel – who was an inspirational, forward thinking man who contributed to many developments and changes in the town. His granddaughter Sue Wild, will be launching a book about his life and work this summer.
This day will be a significant historical event in the life of the town, as the school has been a focal point of the town since it opened its doors. The school continues to thrive, with a recent OFSTED report classing it as “good’’. Commemorative Tree Planting.
There will be a commemorative tree planting during the afternoon event. We are looking
for the oldest person who attended APHS, the person who will have travelled the furthest and the oldest ex teacher present, on the day, to each plant a commemorative tree - in the event of a tie – they may be asked for proof of the facts!
We are also requesting photographs of the construction work on the school, from any readers who may have them.
Contact Sue Wild about the writing and publishing of the book, on 01328 710066, or for further details, APHS on 01328 710476.

Free Apprentice Training in Norfolk Calling all plumbers, heating engineers and electrical installers!
During tough economic times, do you need another pair of hands to help with your workload but cannot afford to invest in qualified staff?
The answer could be to recruit an apprentice. Modern apprenticeships have changed significantly, and are now an excellent way to grow your business and take on those additional jobs while keeping costs to a minimum.
JTL is a registered charity and one of the leading training providers to the Building Services Engineering Sector. JTL works with 3,500 businesses and supports 9,700 apprentices, delivering more advanced
apprenticeships than anyone else in the sector.
Angela Carpenter, Employer Engagement Officer for Norfolk, is keen to make plumbers, heating engineers and electrical installers aware of a very special offer to businesses.
“JTL has 16 fully-funded spaces available for Level 2/Intermediate plumbing apprentices to begin training in Norwich from September 2013. JTL will meet all tuition costs, and the cost of all on-site assessments. Every plumbing apprentice will be provided with a substantial tool kit from Monument Tools, plus all text books, college materials and assessment port folios. JTL will also help to access a range of grants available to meet the cost of the
Ladies of the Band
Behind every group of successful men, it might be said, there is a group of successful women. This is certainly the case with the Cromer and Sheringham Brass band. Whilst the men outnumber the ladies by about six to one, the contribution made by the fairer sex in this ensemble certainly equals that of their male colleagues.
Jenny Thomas, a recent player with the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band, plays tenor horn. However, if you are one of those people who go to the concerts of other bands in North Norfolk, you would most probably have seen her playing French horn or perhaps trumpet. To say she is a performing enthusiast is to greatly understate the fact.
Julie Snaith sits in the largest section of the band and plays cornet. That she is surrounded by men is definitely not a problem to her! She has no trouble holding her own with the best of them.
In charge of the Band is Jane Bussey, who in her role as Director of Music, keeps the musicians under control with her baton. Thursday

Junior coaching classes are held on Saturday mornings from 10am to 11am contact Colin on 07774 810214.
apprentice’s wages – employers are obliged to pay apprentices at least the apprenticeship minimum wage of £2.65 per hour, for a minimum 30 hour week. However, grants are available ranging from £1,500 to £5,000 to help meet the cost of wages. Grants are of course subject to eligibility, so please contact me now for more details and to discuss your requirements. Offers are also available for electrical installation apprentices, so please do contact me straight away to secure your place.”

evenings are practice nights, when the band members are put through their paces in preparation for upcoming events. Occasionally Jane will replace her baton with a brass instrument, or accompany a soloist on the piano.
Heather Shepherd along with the two men in her section, occupies the kitchen department – percussion section to non musicians. So, she needs to know how to play a variety of drums and cymbals, as well as instruments like the xylophone.
But why not come along to see and hear them in action? As part of the Patronal weekend of St Peter’s Church, Sheringham, the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band will be presenting a concert, featuring the Church Choir, on Saturday 29 June. It starts at 7.30pm and admission is free, although a voluntary donation at the end of the evening would be greatly appreciated. We look forward to seeing you.
