Norfolk Blind Veteran Backs Charity Appeal to Reach Thousands in Need

Blind veteran, Jack Pulfer from North Walsham is backing Blind Veterans UK’s No One Alone campaign which aims to reach out to the estimated 68,000 plus blind veterans who could be eligible for its support, as a way of thanking the charity for the support it has shown him.

Born in June 1930, Jack was brought up in Norfolk and joined the Royal Navy at the age of 17. Qualifying as an air electrical artificer in the Fleet Air Arm after completing new entry training at HMS Royal Arthur, Corsham, Jack served at various Naval Air Stations and afloat in the aircraft carriers that operated Firebrand, Barracuda, Sea Fury and Hornet aircraft. While serving in HMS Ark Royal, Jack’s foot was crushed in an aircraft lift accident and he was medically discharged in 1955 as a Petty Officer.

Unfortunately, Jack, pictured right, lost his sight in later life as a result of left optic atrophy and right macular degeneration. As an ex-Serviceman, Jack was able to become a member of Blind Veterans UK, formerly St Dunstan’s, the charity that provides exceptional rehabilitation and training to blind veterans, regardless of when they served or how they lost their sight. The change the charity has made to Jack’s life has been fantastic.

Norfolk Blind Veteran Backs Charity Appeal to Reach Thousands in Need Continued from front cover...

Jack says: “I really can’t describe the impact that the charity has had on my life – it has completely changed my life, it has taught me another life. It has made me very self confident. I have learnt new things, such as how to touch type and use my own computer. Previously I wasn’t able to read and write or send out my own mail, so being able to use a computer has made a big difference. I also feel much more confident about going to places on my own.

“When I lost my eyesight it was not a gradual process - it literally happened over night. The charity really was there to help me through this, in the first instance with all of the basic skills I needed for my adjustment to sight loss. Since then I have tried new things and achieved things I am proud of, such as becoming the first blind person to win a sighted bowling championship through my bowling club. I was the only blind person to compete and I did so against sighted people, and was very pleased to win. As well as this I have enjoyed playing bowls with other blind people at an international level”.

Is your family ready for the National Trust’s north Norfolk coast 50 things adventure?

The National Trust is challenging families to have a go at a series of exciting and fun activities along the north Norfolk coast during this year’s summer holidays.

The Trust’s Norfolk Coast team has put together a list of the top five things to do at each of the special places it cares for along the coast, from Brancaster Beach and Brancaster Staithe in the west to Friary Hills and Blakeney Point in the east.

Activities include Fly a Kite at Brancaster Beach, Make a Mud Pie at Stiffkey Marshes, Track Wild Animals at Morston Quay and Hunt for Fossils and Bones at Blakeney Point.

Blind Veterans UK provides support, rehabilitation, training and recreation to blind veterans, regardless of when they served or how they lost their sight. The charity has three rehabilitation centres in Brighton, Sheffield and Llandudno, North Wales.

The charity recently launched its No One Alone campaign which aims to reach out to the estimated 68,000 plus ex-Service personnel who could be benefiting from the charity’s services but they either do not know about the charity or they do not know that they are eligible for its services.

Alex Green, a National Trust learning officer at the Brancaster Millennium Activity Centre (BMAC), which specialises in outdoor activities for kids, said:

“We care for some of the most special places on the north Norfolk coastline and they are very popular with families, both those living here and those enjoying a holiday. To help kick-start some family adventures we have created a fun and informative little guide to enable them to get more out of their time together on the coast and visit other places they maybe didn’t know about.”

The activities are drawn from the Trust’s hugely popular 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾. And it’s good news for anyone on a budget - Many of the activities are free or low cost.

“Our guide is full of activity ideas as well as hints and tips of what to wear or what to look out for, plus it has a handy map showing all the locations along the way,” added Miss Green. “So whether whatever you want to do, the guide will help you make the most out of your trip to the seaside.”

Those wanting an even greater challenge can also try things like kayaking, raft building or a muddy harbour ramble exploring Brancaster’s creeks and wildlife. There will be a charge of between £5 and £10 for these additional activities.

80th Birthday Celebrations Suppory EAAA

When June Richardson from Saxon Court in North Walsham celebrated her 80th birthday at the end of June with a big party for family and friends at The Queen Elizabeth Hall, Worstead, she decided that instead of presents she would ask her guests to make a donation for the East Anglian Air Ambulance and a total of over £300 was raised for this good cause.

Our photo shows June with son, Martin Richardson presenting a cheque for £330 to the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

David Hodson takes over the kitchens at the Grove

Local lad David Hodson takes the reins with a brief to grow the Grove’s reputation off the back of a prestigious AA Dinner Award achieved earlier in the year.

the best coastline amazing shellfish; Cromer crab and lobster as well as fresh line-caught fish, and a wonderful farming heritage seeing a real revival with pork, beef and poultry some of the best in the country. We use as much fresh produce - grown in the Grove gardens by John and Ann Graveling - as possible, so we have a winning combination.

Born in France, David was raised and educated in Norfolk. He worked under Gordon Ramsay at the Aubergine in London, has launched restaurants in Selfridges and Harvey Nicks, and has decades of experience working in Rosette and Michelin starred restaurants all over the world, as well as cooking for private households including two overseas royal families and HRH the Prince of Wales.

Now David is looking to return to his roots and produce high-quality, locally-sourced food in the beautiful suroundings of the Grove, tucked away on Overstrand Road.

“Norfolk has been calling me for years, but I was just waiting for the right opportunity to come back home”, David said. “The Grove is an incredible place, owned by the same family for nearly eighty years and full of history and charm, and I fell in love with it as soon as I walked through the door. The potential here is considerable. We are lucky enough to have

“We have lots of diverse activities planned – we’re already working with About with Friends, a super local charity, who provide our afternoon teas – and I’m very excited about what we can do here. It’s great to find a house and family keen to take things forward, and as we develop and grow the aim is to become one of the top five restaurants in Norfolk.”

Owner Richard Graveling was delighted to secure David. “Our previous head chef, Gary Parrett, did a wonderful job getting us off

the ground and transforming the place from a B&B to a fully-functioning restaurant, and we’re now looking to David to build on those foundations and really give the Grove a healthy dash of experience and quality,” he said. “We’re aware that customers nowadays are incredibly particular about where they go out and we are keen to try to live up the reputation of North Norfolk in general as a terrific place to eat.”

Prestigious Green Flag hoisted again at Holt Country Park and Sadler’s Wood, and now also at Pretty Corner

Holt Country Park and Sadler’s Wood have again been named amongst the best open spaces in the UK, winning the right to fly the prestigious Green Flag for 2013/14 and now they have been joined by the most aptly named Pretty Corner.

It is the ninth year in a row that Holt Country Park, which, like the other two winners, is run by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), has earned a Green Flag for being welcoming, safe, clean and well-managed.

In 2005, the country park was the first in Norfolk to win a Green Flag - an award that demands year-on-year improvement for the status to be retained.

Holt Country Park was joined by Sadler’s Wood, just outside North Walsham, when it achieved a Green Flag last year, and this year they have been joined by another area of excellent open space in North Norfolk, Pretty Corner Woods near Sheringham.

Pretty Corner has been awarded a Green Flag on its very first application, which is unusual and a clear acknowledgement of the excellent

Millfield’s Farming Expedition

work that is being carried out by NNDC staff and dedicated local volunteers.

The three sites are among a record-breaking 1,447 parks and green spaces that received a prestigious Green Flag Award at the end of last month.

John Lee, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said “North Norfolk has a host of beautiful open spaces. But Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner Woods are up there with the best of our countryside. Our staff take great care in looking after them, while many groups make use of them and also take part in their conservation and management. Congratulations to everyone whose dedication has paid off, with the recognition that Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner Woods are three of the best free open spaces in the country.”

The national award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green

Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd said: “We are thrilled to announce yet another record-breaking year for Green Flag Award parks and green spaces. A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for the hard work and dedication of all the parks managers, staff and volunteers who have helped to create these fantastic places for all to enjoy.

“Quality green spaces are absolutely essential to happy, healthy communities. They are fundamental to our quality of life, whether in cities, towns or villages. That is why it is so significant that we have given out more awards than ever before.” North Norfolk’s only clifftop touring park static caravans for sale Luxury Caravan Hire at Sandy Gulls

An exciting and very memorable school visit to Papworth Farm saw the Middle Phase children from Millfield Primary School start their journey in a trailer pulled by one of Papworth’s tractors.

Tim Papworth, who took the children on a healthy eating expedition around his farm, stopped the tractor along the way and explained all about the different crops that were growing in the fields.

The children shared their knowledge with Mr Papworth and named different foods that were made from the crops.

When they arrived at the farm, they were then shown around the different pieces of farming equipment. Most of the children had never seen the equipment up close before and were awestruck by the colossal size of the machinery and eagerly asked questions about how the equipment worked.

The Papworth’s generosity did not stop there - the children then enjoyed their lunch in Mr and Mrs Papworth’s beautiful gardens. Mrs Papworth along with their son Jack, treated the children to a delicious barbeque. Many of the children said that the burgers and sausages were the best that they had ever had!

Photographic Exhibition

Council gallery hosts new exhibition

The NWPG has evolved from the original North Walsham Camera Club, which was formed in 1984. This will be the 29th annual exhibition.

Speaking of her art, Claire says “My paintings are influenced greatly by Abstract Expressionism and are in oil pastel and Indian ink. My nature inspired designs are following a decorative path, lending themselves to wallpaper motifs and collage work, currently with the theme of birds.”

North Walsham Photographic Group will be holding their annual exhibition of Members’ Work at the Atrium Gallery, Spenser Avenue, North Walsham from Tuesday 20 to Saturday 24 August. In its early days, the club held an annual open print competition and the entries were displayed alongside the annual exhibition. This print competition used to attract entries from all over the country.

With the recent re-naming of the club, the move to the Atrium and the availability of the superb gallery, the committee decided to reinstate the open print competition. Entries have been gathered in and the entries will be displayed, as in prior years, alongside the annual exhibition.

The entries will all have been judged by a professional judge who will have given a critique to each entry - this will give a guide to the entrant as to the strengths of the picture and areas where perhaps improvement could be made. There will be a special evening opening of the exhibition on Tuesday evening from 6pm to 8pm which we hope many of the contestants will attend. The judge, Mr Bill Day CPAGB will attend and will carry out the prize giving ceremony. This evening opening is open to members of the public, so please come along – entry is free.

The exhibition is open daily from 10am to 4pm and entry is free. Refreshments will be available. Please come along and see the talent of our local photographers. Thank you for supporting this event.

Local Author and Artist Featured in A Gospel of Wild Flowers display

The Rt Revd Tony Foottit, retired Bishop of Lynn (now living in Reepham) and Pat Albeck, a well-known National Trust artist (who lives in Aldborough) are the author and illustrator of a unique book being featured in this year’s Summer Display at Aylsham Methodist Church.

Both author and artist kindly gave permission for numerous enlarged excerpts from “The Gospel of Wild Flowers” to be exhibited on 10 large display boards at the recently refurbished chapel in White Hart Street.

Pat Albeck, who studied at the Royal College of Art, is well-known for her designs of wallpapers, textiles, ceramics, calendars and, as patrons of NT shops happily know, numerable tea towels. She has also written childrens books and “A Cat’s Guide to England”.

North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) public art gallery is presenting a new exhibition featuring a collection of works by local artist Claire Davies, of Sloley, near North Walsham.

With a B.A Hons in Fine Art Painting and Printed Textiles, and after a 15 year break and varied mix of life experiences, it was motherhood which brought Claire back to painting and provided a catalyst for the passion and intensity which invests and drives her work. Claire’s paintings are vibrant with colour from a minimal palette, scored by Indian ink, a medium which constantly inspires her and which can offer the observer new depth, insight and discoveries over time.

For more information on Claire Davies visit: http://clairedaviesartist.co.uk

NNDC seeks to offer opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit first-floor ‘gallery’ area in its Holt Road offices in Cromer, and in turn provides staff and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of different artists’ work. Currently six exhibitions are held annually, open for view to the public during normal office hours, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8.30am – 5pm, Wednesday 10am – 5pm and Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm.

POPPY LINE TO STAGE MASSIVE STEAM GALA AT END OF AUGUST

Two of the most famous steam locomotives in Britain are set to star in North Norfolk’s Poppy Line Gala, which runs from Friday August 30th to Sunday September 1st. Tornado, the only steam loco built this century, is joined by Oliver Cromwell, the giant engine that commanded the Norwich – London expresses until diesels took over.

There’s also a remarkable survivor in the programme. No. 76084, one of the standard locomotives built for British Railways after the second world war, was rescued from the scrapyard 39 years ago and spent the next 30 years as a super-large ornament in a Retford garden. Set up to restore her, the 76084 Locomotive Company has now completed the task, and the engine will be running on the Poppy Line for the next two years.

Other engines lined up for the Gala include former Southern Railway King Arthur class Sir Lamiel, which used to haul holiday expresses from London to the West Country, and the railway’s popular B12 express resplendent in

the apple green colour of the old London and North Eastern Railway.

There’ll be an intensive passenger service on all three days of the Gala, and demonstration goods trains will also be operated (the first of these, for the early bird photographers, will leave Holt at 7.20am each day).

On the Friday and Saturday evenings, a special beer train is scheduled, and it’s hoped that fish ‘n’ chips will also be on offer.

There’s a family ticket (2 adults + 2 children or 3 adults + 1 child) at £45, and 2- and 3-day tickets are also available. If you book in advance (online at www.nnrailway.co.uk or on 01263 820 800) before August 23rd, you’ll enjoy a generous 15% discount on the walk-up fares.

This is a super value day out. Rover tickets, which give unlimited travel on all trains all day, are just £19 adult, £18 senior and The Poppy Line's "new" steam engine, British Railways Standard Class £11 child 5 – 15. 4 no.76084, pulled its first train for more than 40 years on Sunday 21 Under 5s go free. July.

New for Old at Poppy Line

The train was a special, reserved for shareholders of the 76084 Locomotive Company, which carried out the restoration. The engine was officially relaunched at Holt Station when John Oldcorn, Chairman of the company, broke the traditional bottle of bubbly on the front buffer beam. Our photo catches the moment.

The engine was built in 1952 as part of the British Railways re-equipment programme after the Second World War. It was saved from the famous Barry scrap yard in Wales in the early '70s, but then spent some years as a very large garden ornament at a Retford address. Saved again by the 76084 company, it has been restored by enthusiast Ian Storey and his team. Painting into lined-out BR livery was carried out by the North Norfolk Railway works at Weybourne.

76084 is now running in service on the Poppy Line, where it will be resident for the next two years.

Dark circles under eyes? Non-surgical solutions can help

Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCAAM Medical Director at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic explains…

Dark circles under eyes are a common problem. These can result in a tired and dull appearance even though you may be full of energy. So what causes these?

Dark circle may actually be due to excess pigmentation in the skin under the eyes. This is more common among dark Asians. It can sometimes be due to underlying medical problems, nutritional deficiencies or due to congestion caused by allergies or hay fever etc.

Vast majority of suffers however do not have any underlying medical problem. The usual cause is not true dark circles but such appearance due to shadows cast by overhead light. The medical name for this is naso-jugal grove or more commonly referred to as ‘tear troughs’

Tear troughs is the area where lower eyelid stops and cheek begins. The skin along this area is attached to the underlying bone by

a dense ligament. Young plump skin and underlying tissue hides it. This, however, changes as 30s and 40s roll on. Skin, soft tissue and even underlying bone of this area change and shadows start to appear. Sometimes this can be a result of surgery in this area.

So what can be done for tear trough correction?

This is one condition where surgery will not help. A better solution is an injection of hyaluronic acid fillers to plump out this area so that shadows become less conspicuous. And remember - less is more here. Too much filler and a bluish tinge will be visible or the area will swell. Bruising as a result of treatment is now very much a thing of the past. New technology and injection techniques now make it possible to have this as a ‘lunch-time’ procedure without any downtime although it is best to allow a few days to be on the safe side.

Coming up at North Walsham Library…

Is this procedure painful?

No, this is performed under local anaesthetic and this area is usually less sensitive so pain is not an issue.

What fillers are used?

We use restylane or juvederm these are natural products and allergy test is not required. Another big advantage is that it can easily and instantly dissolved should there be any problem.

How long does the filler last?

Usually up to a year or more and then it can be repeated.

What other treatment options are available?

Specialist skin creams including depigmenting agents, gentle chemical peels and fractional eyelift also known as ‘Madonna lift’ can rejuvenate skin around the eyes and sometimes combination approach works best.

Creepy House Reading Challengey This year's Summer Reading Challenge at North Walsham Library runs through to 9 September. Library Manager, Sue Lawrence, says that this year's Creepy House theme is for all children but especially aimed at 8 to 11 year olds. It also has a really great interactive website. You can access more of the site by collecting stickers for books read. Check it out at www.creepy-house.org.uk

Pictured is Sandra Whitwood, with children Gianni, Lena and Lola. She says, "The Library Reading Challenge is fun and interactive. My children love visiting the library every week to collect their stickers. Going to the library has helped my children discover new authors and try new hobbies. Having access to so many books has helped improve their reading and vocabulary skills. This has been particularly obvious in Lola's flying start at school this year!" Colour In Motion

In August, The Gallery Norfolk celebrates its first year – and affirms its reputation for vibrancy and colour – with an exhibition of paintings by the Norwich based painter Leon Bunnewell.

Exuding atmosphere and energy, Bunnewell’s landcapes, seascapes and townscapes have attracted a great deal of attention from visitors to The Gallery Norfolk since it opened in Summer 2012.

“People love the passion they feel in Leon’s pictures,” says the gallery’s owner, Polly Miller, “They evoke strong emotions. His paintings of Cromer and the beaches here have understandably proved very popular here, but earlier this year he showed me more of his work depicting other towns, like East and West Runton and Sheringham – and as for his landscapes ... they really blew me away! He is a master at capturing a sense of movement – whether it be in the waves of the sea or in a scene on a beach or in a street... But he also manages to instil an apparently serene landscape with his trademark intensity and dynamism. The effect can be quite mesmerising, and that motivated me to create an exhibition that does justice to the full range of his work.”

Leon Bunnewell works primarily with oils, although he is also experienced with acrylics, watercolours and pastels and has produced many pencil drawings. Largely self-taught – as

he says “painting for love” – he nearly always works outdoors, “on the spot, throughout the year and in all weathers. I paint quite quickly, in a single session, working loosely and often vigorously and aiming for spontaneity and freshness. My wish is to create a painting with character, personality and feeling; evoking how the subject behaves and feels – and the sensations it creates in me – rather than just capturing how it looks.”

"Compare your signature with your best hand-writing, all your character is in the signature and that's what I put into my paintings."

Over the past year, demand for The Gallery Norfolk’s paintings, drawings and prints has grown, with pieces by new local names now complementing the work of artists who helped set the gallery’s creative direction from day one. They include Sarah McMenemy and Andy Lovell: “Sarah’s six new prints of Cromer – available as a limited-edition set – are proving especially desirable, as are Andy’s three new silk-screen prints,” explains Polly Miller. Visitors to The Gallery Norfolk are both impressed and surprised by the range of art on offer from both established and rising names. Prices start as low as £30 for original works of art, but there are also pieces to tempt the more serious collector. The gallery also offers a specialist framing service: “The emphasis is on

Also offering an array of craftwork and jewellery, the gallery has become a popular source for gifts.

In everything it does, The Gallery Norfolk sets store by colour, originality and strong design.

“We’ve built close relationships with individual craftspeople, such as jewellers, ceramicists and glass-makers, but we also now stock a hand-picked collection of vintage glass by makers such as Murano and Dartington. It’s an eclectic mix, but it all gives the gallery its special personality.”

GOSH Charity Event Success

A Great Ormond Street Hospital charity event held on 13 July at The Links Hotel, West Runton was a great success raising £1,358.42 for the charity. This could pay for a recliner chair/sofa for parents to stay with their child at GOSH, or two new playrooms within the hospital, or 135 overnight stays for parents at the hospital hotel Weston House.

Children were entertained by surprise Disney guests, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and there were over 175 raffle prizes. Organisers would like to say big thank you to local and national businesses for donating and supporting the charity event, and everyone who attended. They are now considering holding another charity for Great Ormond Street Hospital next summer, saying ‘as a GOSH family we know how much of a difference this money will make to so many families’

New Orleans Comes to North Walsham Garden Centre

The Norfolk Dixieland Street Band will be taking the sounds of New Orleans to North Walsham Garden Centre for a special event on Sunday 25 August. The band is made up of a network of jazz musicians who enjoy the fun of going back to the roots of their music. The band is totally acoustic and the line-up is cornet (Richard Church), clarinet/saxophone (Mick Murphy), trombone (Bill Brewer), side drum (Vic. Brown) bass drum (Peter Adcock), sousaphone (Dave Gilbert).

We can also tell you that the Street Band’s sister ensemble, the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band, has been successful in getting a monthly gig off the ground at The Goat Inn, Skeyton. A new extension has provided the venue with the extra space needed to make it comfortable when the band plays inside. It also opens on to the garden where the band entertains when the

weather is good. The 7 July was particularly special. It was a glorious afternoon and the band got the audience in the right frame of mind to celebrate Andy Murray’s triumph at Wimbledon.

The Norfolk Jazz Quartet has continued to enhance its reputation with successful dates at The Manor Hotel in Mundesley and at Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden. This delightful combination plays melodic jazz standards and music from the Great American Song Book. It is developing a strong following.

The Dixieland Jazz Band and the quartet both have busy schedules of private functions in August but the Dixieland Band has a gig at The Goat, Long Road, Skeyton, from 1.30 p.m.

on Sunday 1 September. Admission will, as always, be free and you can just drop in for a drink and enjoy the music or you can eat in the restaurant or the extension. To be sure of a table, however, it would be wise to book. Tel: 01692 538600. The Dixieland Band will also be playing its annual date at Sidestrand Village Fete on Saturday 10 August from midday.

Happy jazzing!

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Kittens, and even more kittens, have needed to come into care and all our pens are now full. Another 10 plus two mums arrived this week because their owner was unable to care for them properly. Fortunately six kittens have left for loving new homes and a further four will leave when they are old enough and had their first injections. Those still needing our help are receiving excellent care whilst they wait for a pen to become free. Stephanie has also received calls from outside our area where people have been unable to get help from their local charities because they too are full. We do, however, give priority to those needing help locally.

As well as calls relating to cats needing to come into care, there have been several enquiries recently from people needing to catch stray/feral cats for neutering, etc. Mention of the loan of a cat trap sometimes puts people off and I must admit that before I had actually seen one, my reaction was the same. They are a safe way of catching cats without fear of injuring the cats or the person catching them. Food is put at the far end of the trap and when the cat steps on the mechanism the door closes at the other end. Another way to catch a nervous/stray cat (providing you can get close to it) is with a “crusher cage. Again, it sounds horrendous but actually is the opposite. A crusher cage looks similar to an ordinary wire carrying basket with an additional opening, plus a restrainer inside, which allows the vet to examine the cat without fear of injury to him or the cat. I have used one with the additional opening on the bottom and it is a much less stressful way to catch cats in certain circumstances; just drop it over the cat, quickly replace the floor and the cat is secure. Those with additional side openings are very handy for transferring a cat from a trap ready to be examined as they are designed to fit together for this purpose. If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858.

Alternatively you can visit

www.cats.org.uk/ northwalsham

for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

If, however, you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Get set for summer with Animal Magic Dog Club

Now that the warmer weather is finally here, we’re all looking forward to enjoying the summer but please remember that dogs can suffer from the same problems that we do from over exposure to the sun. This includes dehydration, sunburn and heatstroke which can be fatal.

Here’s our Animal Magic top tips for a safe summer with your dog: • Don’t leave your dog in the car –

even in the shade with windows open the temperature can soar turning your car into an oven very quickly. Remember - dogs die in hot cars.

• Try to walk your dog in the cool of the morning or evening and if you

really must walk at lunchtime choose a sheltered lane or wood. Never allow your dog to exercise excessively in hot weather.

• Consider having your dog’s coat clipped for the summer - Most breeds

seem to really appreciate this.

• Your dog will enjoy a shady spot to lie in but during the hottest part of the day they might be more comfortable indoors.

• If your dog goes off their food try

to feed them later in the evening when it is cooler and you will usually find their appetite returns.

• Make sure your dog always has a supply of clean drinking water. Always carry water with you on hot days, and give your dog frequent small amounts.

• Most dogs enjoy a paddle, swim or game with the hosepipe. It’ll help them keep cool, but after fun in the water always dry their ears and under collars to avoid irritations.

But most of all enjoy a fun and safe summer with your dog!

Hedgerow pruning...

August is a great time of year to prune evergreen hedges like Leylandii, Privet and Yew and also some deciduous hedging; although formal hedging and more vigorous varieties can also benefit from a second or third pruning in early spring and summer. Winter and late-autumn pruning should be avoided for evergreens, due to frost damage.

When hedging is pruned regularly and correctly it will have a dramatic effect, restricting outward growth to provide a denser and fuller hedge. A hedge should always be thicker at the bottom than the top (the “A” shape above) to allow sunlight to reach the lower branches and thus be dense from top to bottom. This shape can very quickly be lost if regular pruning is not carried out, and re-shaping is not always easy or possible at a given time of year, depending upon the species. Most overgrown hedges can be reduced dramatically at this time of year and will grow stronger before winter.

Flowering hedging including Lavender, Berberis, Escallonia and Rosemary are best pruned immediately after flowering. It is always preferable to lightly trim the tops of Lavender each year, rather than cutting into old, woody stems. For other varieties of flowering hedging there can be more specific pruning regimes (i.e. after fruiting) and we highly recommend reading up before pruning.

By allowing just a little time each year you can have a hedge which stays dense, looks good and produces an abundance of flowers. Barry & Rob’s Gardening Services

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station Three Peaks Challenge

From the peaks and troughs of the North Sea, to the three highest peaks in the British Isles, Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers are going into action to complete this massive challenge to raise money for the RNLI.

At 8am on 24 August Christian Larter, Jake Munday, Dave Cato, William Baker, Danial Cordukes and Justin Arnold will start the challenge at Ben Nevis then moving onto Scarfell Pike and finishing at Snowdon. They hope to complete all three peaks in 24hrs or less - driving time between the peaks is approx 10hrs, leaving 14 hrs for the Peaks.

All six are hoping to raise money for the RNLI, they have already had sponsorship from

Richardson’s boat yard and Nicholsons Stalham Engineering to cover cost the fuel. Trotts Vehicle Hire has donated a minibus free of charge and Norfolk Yacht Agency has helped with the cost of the Guides at the three peaks.

The six volunteer crew from Happisburgh are hoping to raise money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. This effort and many others across the country are to enable the RNLI to continue to provide a crucial 24/7 volunteer emergency service to the UK and Republic of Ireland. Without public support the RNLI would not be able to function, so please help by donating and push the crew to the finish line.

Donations can be made by calling into

DONATE BLOOD BEFORE YOU GO

In the summer months, as many of us head off abroad in search of sun, sea and sangria, NHS Blood and Transplant would like to remind readers about the importance of taking time to donate blood before you go away. Hospitals in England and North Wales need around 7,000 units of blood every day to treat patients with a range of health issues, so the need for blood is constant. So please donate now, before you pack your suitcase and jet off to sunnier climes. This is especially important for those donors who are O Rh negative (O-) and B Rh negative (B-), as these blood groups are most vulnerable.

Donated blood is used not only in accident and emergency situations, but also for patients undergoing surgery and receiving treatment for cancer and blood diseases, such as leukaemia. Blood stocks can dip in the summer and with red blood cells only having a shelf life of 35 days and platelets a shelf life of seven days, it is important that NHS Blood and Transplant maintains vital blood stocks by collecting enough blood to meet patient needs.

Denise Burke elected Labour candidate for North Norfolk

North Norfolk Labour Party has selected its party chair Denise Burke to run as the Labour Parliamentary Candidate in North Norfolk at the 2015 General Election. Denise Burke from Happisburgh is no stranger to local politics having led a number of high profile campaigns including the Act on Ambulances and Protect Our Post campaigns. She told Labour Party members at a selection meeting in Cromer that she is “not just another man in a suit" and would offer "a real choice in 2015" with an alternative to "the three Tory parties". Denise has been chair of North Norfolk Labour Party since 2012, and is a school governor and volunteer in the community. She works with her husband, Stephen, on a number of initiatives to improve care for both young and older people. She runs the Good Care Guide - a 'TripAdvisor' style website for families using childcare and eldercare - and United for All Ages bringing young and old people together. Between 2004 and 2010 she worked for the Mayor of London on childcare and youth strategy. Previously she worked as a tax inspector for ten years, and headed up early years and childcare for Peterborough city council. She has pledged to fight for better care and health, more jobs, improved transport, affordable housing and coastal protection in north Norfolk all areas she believes Norman Lamb and the government have failed to adequately address.

NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUB

Brian Hedges, a local North Walsham resident for almost 70 years, presented members with an account of the development of the town over much of the last century. His initial memories are of a town with a population of about five thousand souls, it is presently about thirteen thousand.

Surprisingly it supported 26 licensed premises and nine butchers at that time. The presentation was assisted by slides, which provided a graphic illustration of ‘then and now’. The ‘Picturedrome’ a silent cinema situated in Kings Arms Street was shown, followed by the new ‘talkie’ picture house, the ‘Regal’, built in New Road, in 1931. The site is presently occupied by a machine hire shop.

There were two major employers in the town, Randalls, a large hardware firm, operating in premises now tenanted by the Drug store. The firm was also the manufacturer of farming machinery. The second employer was Cornish and Gaymer, makers of ecclesiastical furniture, upon ground recently occupied by the now defunct HL food canning factory, in Norwich Road, adjacent to the railway station.

The popular Chubby Panda restaurant was the home of the Co-op, opened in 1921, following the destruction of a former property during the First World War.

The present Community Centre and Post Office occupy land which was used in 1780 by Captain Thomas Cooper, to build a private residence, the ‘Oaks’. He was also responsible for the construction of New Road, designed to enable him to improve the layout of the parkland.

More recently North Walsham once boasted two railway stations, the second station being the Town Station, serving Yarmouth and later Leicester, now the Midland Road area. It appears that North Walsham also possessed a live theatre, in a building off Vicarage Street, now occupied by Wilco’s. Opened in 1828, it attracted performers of considerable standing and contemporary attirement.

Possibly the most recent change has been the demolition of the Memorial Hospital, which was opened in 1924 by HRH, Princess Marie Louise, and now accommodates the present Community Hospital, which was opened in 2012.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday 28 August at 10am at the Community Centre. New members always welcome. Ted Gadsden North Walsham Times 428 August 10th 2013

Talent versus Teachers!

This year topped new heights in a yearly Talent Show held by Millfield Primary School in North Walsham.

The School Council and Deputy Head Mrs Ashby had given up part of their lunchtimes watching and judging auditions for the show. Their job of choosing who would go through was extremely difficult as they had so many talented acts to choose from.

On the afternoon of the show the school were treated to fifteen fantastic acts including singing, dancing, magic tricks, comedy and puppet acts. The excitement grew throughout the show and the children cheered and clapped every act, which boosted the acts’ confidence in performing in front of everyone.

Henry Hardingham won runner up with his magic trick and Chloe Knight, Ruby Loose, Poppy McCann and Talia Yarham won the show with their combined singing talents to Jessie J’s ‘Price Tag’.

The ‘talent’ show did not stop there! Mrs Eke, a teaching assistant at the school, who was also involved in the audition processes then ‘persuaded’ some of the teaching staff to take part, much to the delight of the pupils.

They saw Mrs Eke’s phenomenal piano playing, Mr Lillistone displayed his talent by playing various songs on his guitar, Mrs Price ‘sang’ and played the drums along to a Lumineers song, Mrs Oldridge and Mr Smith were amazing as they played the ukulele with Ms Clarke’s wonderful singing to accompany them.

However the winner of the teachers ‘talent’ show was Mr Walder, who ‘balancing’ on an Indo board, to the theme of Hawaii 5O, showed his amazing juggling skills. The act saw Mr Walder more off, than on the board, which made the act even more thrilling to watch.

Ellen Weston, Secretary for the School Council, said “I liked the teachers’ acts, Mr Walder tried to stay on the board but it didn’t really work, which made it really funny. There was something for everyone in the talent show - the younger children loved the puppet acts.”
