NORTH WALSHAM & DILHAM CANAL TRUST – OPEN DAY AT EBRIDGE MILL LOCK ISLAND This planned event took place on the lock chamber island at Ebridge Mill on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July. The good weather encouraged a lot of people to come along and find out more about this, their local canal, by looking at pictures of what it looked like in the past and seeing the real thing as it is now.
There were several types of boats put onto the water and they sailed, or were rowed, around over quite a large area. Our photo shows a sailing boat just upstream of the mill – a sight which has probably not been seen here for many decades!

NORTH WALSHAM & DILHAM CANAL TRUST – OPEN DAY AT EBRIDGE MILL LOCK ISLAND Continued from front cover...
A highly detailed model of a wherry, as was seen only on the Canal due to its’ size, was on show in the refreshment marquee – and it was suggested that a full sized craft would be built in the near future for use on the canal. Many
The main information centre area comprised of several tents, containing playing DVDs of the canal and its’ restoration thus far, maps of the canal showing that, as it is man-made, it does NOT totally follow the course of the River Ant, games to play, relics and artefacts recovered from some of the cleared areas, Trust Membership information, details of the Trusts’ WEB site www.nwdct.org and a marquee providing teas, coffees and luscious cakes, of which one should probably not eat too many – but nice!
Nearly 200 additional people signed the petition supporting the work on the canal, encouraging The Trust to continue its’ work. There was not one person against what is being done! An RSPB member reported that a great number of reed warblers had been observed near to the lock and also goldfinches near to the weir. A marsh harrier flew by, sweeping down to the meadows on the west bank and a vole was seen swimming across the mill pond. An otter was also noted swiftly moving upstream to perhaps happier hunting grounds.
K C evin
folk took the opportunity to stroll along the levelled, west bank to enjoy the scenery and to sit on the provided, natural timber benches along the way. A more senior couple sat at the end of the island and pondered what had happened over the last 60 years or so. Fascinating!

A number of the waterborne people asked why the canal was blocked some half a mile upstream of the Mill. The Trust could not answer this and advised people to write directly to Dr Charles Beardall, Area Manager (Eastern) at the Environment Agency, Dragonfly House, 2 Gilders Way, Norwich, NR3 1UB or telephone via 0870 8506506 or e-mail on charles.beardall@environmentagency.gov.uk.
Another, very interesting visitor to the scene was, quite unexpectedly, The Coastal Rowing Association – Blakeney! This group of happy folk had brought their rowing boat, Hoi Larnton, along to try the more peaceful inland waters. This is not just any ordinary rowing boat but a special, about 6 metres long and fit for the sea. Its’ use is not merely for pleasure but for rehabilitation and recovery from medical problems, including surgery.

A Steam Treat - Ride on the Footplate of an Iconic Steam Engine
The huge Tornado, the only new steam engine to be built in Britain in the 21st century, has quickly become one of the best-known locomotives in the country. Prince Charles has ridden on her footplate – and now you have a chance to do the same.
On Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd September, the Poppy Line will be offering a limited number of footplate rides on Tornado as she hauls a train from Sheringham to Holt and back. The cost of a round-trip ride is £150, but the experience is priceless! A real steam treat!
Only a limited number of trips are available – to book your place, call 01263 820 800 as soon as possible, or visit the office at Sheringham station.
Tornado will also be starring at the Grand Steam Gala on the Poppy Line, which runs over the previous weekend from Friday 30 August to Sunday 1 September. Other giant engines in steam include Oliver Cromwell, which used to haul Norwich – London expresses, and King Arthur class Sir Lamiel, which ran holiday expresses to the West Country before the second world war.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
When I sent the last copy for the “Times” papers to Margaret, she replied by asking if we would be able to assist an elderly gentleman who had contacted her hoping we would be able to help him as he had 9 cats and 6 kittens needing new homes. He was asking for help having read one of our previous articles. I then discussed the situation with Stephanie and made contact with the family who said that the older cats had just appeared, so we can only assume that they had been dumped there; they were feral but the kittens quite friendly. As we cannot put feral cats in our pens (it would be cruel to confine them in such a small space) we were able to offer to get the adult cats neutered and because the kittens were still quite small we would be able to take them into care and find them new homes. Although not the ideal solution the family were grateful for the help we could offer and plans were then made to catch all the kittens before starting to trap, neuter and return the adult cats to the site. One of the cats already in care was then moved (and has now been re-homed) to accommodate the kittens and the job of catching
commenced. A further two kittens were discovered in the meantime and all are now in care, all tabby and white but from three separate litters. Two of the kittens were a little hissy to begin with but with lots of contact from their fosterer they have all settled in and some are already old enough to leave us.
Because the lady trapping the cats works, we asked Barbara, one of our volunteers, if she would deal with the transporting to and from the vets and fortunately she has been able to do this. To date, six of the cats have been trapped and neutered although sadly one died on the operating table. This happens very rarely and there is usually an underlying health problem when it does. We now believe there are only two more cats to catch and hopefully when you read this they too will have been to the vets and the family concerned will have no extra cats to care for and, more importantly, no more kittens.
Sheringham Carnival Pet Show
– a fantastic day for all that attended! A big thank you to everyone that took part in organising and joining in with this event. It was our first attempt at a pet show and we were delighted with the turn out. It was lovely to see many of our regular clients there as well as a few holiday makers. The carnival queen Jenna, with her attendant Pippa, judged the categories picking winners from each one, with the help of our own Vet Michaela and Jen our guest Vet from Edinburgh. The overall winner went to one of our regular clients – Daisy a lovely cocker spaniel, she won the award for her lovely temperament and being such a well behaved pooch on the day! Other winners included little Molly for being so tiny, Gillie for being a beautiful rescue and Flo for being the oldest in the show. There were so many winners, we hope they all had a good day and that they will join us again next time.
We would also like to say a huge thank you to Mr and Mrs Osborne for the fabulous agility display they put on using their own dogs and for helping members of the public have a go at the course.
If you have any of your own pictures of the show feel free to put them on our facebook page. More pictures are on our website or you can go to www.andylangleyphotography.org.uk for more.

NORTH WALSHAM TOWN COUNCIL ANNUAL NEWSLETTER 2013
Greetings from the Town Mayor – Cllr. Jacqueline Belson
May I say, it is a privilege to become Town Mayor for North Walsham (2013-14). It is lovely to give something back to the town where I grew up. The town has suffered in this difficult financial climate, but we are gradually beginning to see some improvement. Councillors are constantly working behind the scenes to continue the positive work. This term we have already seen the opening of Davenport’s Magic Kingdom, completed the lease for the Midland Road car park and have an addition to our local station of a £26,000 ticket machine. The Fun Day in the park was a great success as was the Medieval Festival to commemorate the Peasant’s Revolt. I look forward to seeing some more positive events happen in the coming year.
ANNUAL REPORT
For the year ended 31st March 2013 and as reported to the Town Meeting held on 2nd April, 2013. Since the last Town meeting the Town Council has had two resignations and Garry Bull and Terry Morland were co-opted. In the last year the Town Council has: Lobbied the Government regarding the then proposed Vat increase for businesses.
LEADERSHIP OF PLACE PROJECT – working to improve our town. One of these is the town centre improvements – to make the town more pedestrian friendly. Improved signage is also currently taking place. The Town Council has requested the County Council to carry out a feasibility study for a bus interchange station TOWN GUIDE - With the sudden death of Roger Buck and the closure of his printing firm, we have taken over the publication of the Town Guide; these new Guides should be available within the next two weeks.
PIGEONS - We have worked closely with the District Council to eradicate the pigeon problem in the town. The infrared gel that has been used seems to be working very well; we continue to monitor the situation
TENNIS COURTS - By working closely with the Griffon Area Partnership we secured a grant for the refurbishment of the tennis courts on the War Memorial Park.
FRENCH TWINNING - Our French twinning project with St Paul-Les–Dax is moving forward (albeit slowly) after Cllrs Vivienne Uprichard, Anne Moore and Dave Robertson visited them last May. Contact has now been made between the schools who have shown an interest and it is hopeful that they will be meeting up later this year. DAVENPORT’S MAGIC KINGDOM - On the Cromer Road it is good to see this enterprise taking shape with its opening scheduled for the end of May; this should help to bring more people to the town. This venture will also be assisted by the new Bus stops being introduced outside the New Waitrose store.
GATEWAY - A request has been made to the County Council to provide a gateway with sloping wooden sides and red tarmac at the entrance to North Walsham on the Cromer Road to slow traffic down and make drivers aware of the bus stops, there is also to be a central island, to assist pedestrians crossing the road.
PLANNING - The former Marrick Ropes site has been a difficult issue for the Council as members were fully aware of the adverse impact it would have on our Town Centre. This is why the Town Council approved the application subject to several conditions. Even though the District Development Committee approved the application, there were several conditions, if not met, then the application will fall. INFORMATION OFFICE - celebrated its second birthday in July. This is manned by volunteers and supported by the Town Council.
MARKET PLACE - Nobody could have been pleased with the state of the resurfacing in the Market Place late last year and we have continually lobbied the County Council. They have now promised to do some remedial work even though when we first complained the inspectors felt the work was satisfactory.
SPORTS CENTRE - We have supported the Sports Centre in their discussions with the District Council. Town Council members were very concerned with the changes that were first proposed. Thankfully, although unfortunately, the fees have had to be increased in line with the other two sports centres its future looks brighter. NORTH WALSHAM TOWN COUNCIL
1
PRECEPT - The Town Council have had to adopt the new Council tax base introduced by the Government but in essence the precept previously set remained the same but worked out in a different system. Unfortunately there is no guarantee for the coming years. We wait to see what the Government proposes.
PLAY EQUIPMENT - Following a request for additional play equipment for toddler age to be sited on the play area at Acorn Road, we are currently investigating costs etc. North Walsham and Dilham Canal continues to get our support in their efforts to open the water up at Ebridge Mill, it is good to see the wildlife returning.
STREET NAMING AND NUMBERING - We have the responsibility for Street naming and numbering. We agreed the naming of the former Howard’s Coachworks site in Mundesley Road as Howard Court and at Wood View the name will continue into the new development.
CAR PARKS - An issue that has taken up an extraordinary amount of time has been the Car Parks, particularly the Midland Road & Mundesley Road sites. The cost of car parks is also consuming so much time, but we are working with the Chamber of Business to try and get a satisfactory resolution. Since this report the Town Council has entered a lease for Midland Road car park to remain free until December 2014.
DEFIBRILLATOR - Deputy Mayor Jacqui Belson raised her concerns that only doctor’s surgeries had this equipment, thankfully the Town Council agreed to investigate. Since then Cllrs Uprichard, Garry Bull and Mr. Robertson spent several hours at Ambulance Control and it was very alarming that North Walsham had no defibrillators. This is about to change. They cost anywhere between £1500 & £2500 each; the Town Council doesn’t have that type of money, but we are working with other organisations.
AMBULANCE SERVICE - We wrote to the East of England Ambulance Service together with other Town Councils about the planned reduction in vehicle and manpower coupled with the unacceptable response times that some people have been subjected to, for which we secured a meeting in Cromer with other Town and Parish Councils to hear from the Management about their problems. This was useful and resulted in the visit to Ambulance control that was referred to above. STAFF - Thanks were publicly expressed to the grounds staff for looking after the Cemetery, Churchyard and parks. They do an admirable job and this year helped clear away the snow on the footpaths in the town centre, also the paths through the park.
CHRISTMAS LIGHTS - Thanks were also expressed to the Christmas Lights Group for lighting up the town at Christmas, and the Funday Committee for putting on the event in the park each year. Neither events was blessed with good weather but were still well attended. Dates for your diaries - Civic Service/Songs of Praise on Sunday, 9th June, Continental Market Sunday 23rd June; Funday Sunday 30th June, Funfair 24th – 28th July. Christmas Street Fair is on Saturday 30th November. For more details contact the Town Clerk. The Town Mayor’s report was accepted.
INFORMATION OFFICE – COUNCIL OFFICES, NEW ROAD, NORTH WALSHAM OPEN:

The Town Council still takes reports of street light/rubbish/highway matters and delivers them to the correct authority – this hasn’t changed. We now take bookings for Cromer Pier Theatre Shows.
TENNIS COURTS - War Memorial Park, North Walsham - Booking - The newly refurbished courts are available for hire from the Information/Council Office Monday-Friday 9.30am to 2.30pm, Saturday 9.30am to 12.30pm (summer period see above) and The Sports Centre, Spenser Avenue, weekdays 6.00pm to 8pm, weekends 9am to 8pm. Centenary of First World War to be commemorated with new Choral Work celebrating Life of Edith Cavell
Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society have commissioned the renowned composer Patrick Hawes to write a new large scale choral work to commemorate the outbreak of the First World War in 2014.
The world premiere performance in Norwich Cathedral on Saturday 12 July 2014 is part of the First World War Centenary Partnership, led by IWM (Imperial War Museums) as also will be a very special Remembrance Concert on Saturday 8 November 2014 in St Peter’s Church Sheringham.
The First World War Centenary Partnership is delivering a global programme of events and activities inspiring young and old to connect with the lives, stories and impact of the First World War.
Recently Patrick Hawes visited the choir during a rehearsal to talk about his plans. His brother, Rev Andrew Hawes, is currently writing the libretto which is based on the life and faith of Norfolk’s WW1 heroine, nurse Edith Cavell, who was executed in Belgium in 1915 for her role in helping hundreds of allied troops escape. Patrick will begin composing shortly and will meet with the choir over the coming months to share progress and “try out” some of the music. Patrick explained that he is writing a solo soprano part for “my friend Elin Manahan Thomas” who will perform at the premiere with English Chamber Orchestra. He also announced to the choir that he has just signed a three-album deal with Decca.
As ambassador for The Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts, Hawes is keen to involve children in his compositions and it is planned that students from Gresham’s international Britten Music Course will take part in the premiere performance. The Sheringham concert will feature children from the Jiminies choir at Gresham’s Prep School and will be accompanied by the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra with soprano
soloist Rosamund Walton. Patrick will also deliver a workshop at the Auden Theatre in May 2014, open to both children and adults, to talk about the art of composing and share some of the music prior to its first formal performance.
info@sheringhamandcromerchoral.co.uk Diane Lees, Director-General of IWM says To keep up-to-date with plans visit the web site “We are all connected to the First World War, www.sheringhamandcromerchoral.co.uk either through our own family history, the heritage of our local communities, or North Norfolk’s only because of its long term impact on society clifftop touring park and the world we live in today. Patrick static caravans for sale Hawes and Sheringham and Cromer Choral Luxury Caravan Hire at Society are enabling people in Sandy Gulls Norfolk to understand the impact of the Great War on society today”. Musical Director for the choir and Director of the international Britten Music Course at Gresham’s, Nathan Waring, said, "We are incredibly excited to be working with Patrick in the creation of a www.sandygulls.co.uk major new choral work. The support given to us by our donors, including a major Cromer Road, Grant for the Arts from Arts Mundesley, Norfolk Council England, is assisting NR11 8DF a culturally significant event in the Tel: 01263 720 513 Email info@sandygulls.co.uk commemorations for the centenary of www.facebook.com/SandyGulls www.twitter.com/#SandyGulls WW1 in 2014, and iBMC participants will benefit enormously from the experience of performing alongside the ECO and Elin Manahan Thomas. I am thrilled to be asked to SOME THINGS WERE MADE FOR EACH OTHER« conduct the world premiere of a work which we hope will add to the rich tapestry of contemporary English choral music."
Further funding is still required for this major project. Anyone wishing to find out more should contact the Chairman, Bob Cumber, on 01263 822331 or email

Further opportunity to save money on gas and electricity bills
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is offering residents a further opportunity to use ‘people power’ to save money on their gas and electricity bills through the Big Switch and Save scheme.
The first round of the scheme was launched in North Norfolk in March this year, with 2796 households in the area registering. They achieved an overall average annual saving of £111 per household, with the highest average annual saving of £139 for ‘dual fuel’ customers opting for online billing. Nearly 12,000 households registered across the country as a whole, of which 71% were able to make a saving through switching.
Anyone who missed out on the first round
or who thinks they could make even more savings on their gas or electricity bills, will be able to register for a second round of the Big Switch and Save scheme between 14 August and 15 October 2013.
NNDC Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, John Lee, said, “We all know that gas and electricity costs are soaring and energy switching is one way individual households can reduce those costs. NNDC is delighted to be able to offer a second opportunity for people in North Norfolk to register for the Big Switch and Save. Our experience in the first round of the scheme shows that it really can help many people cut their energy costs in these difficult times.”
Farman Avenue Access Only Farman Avenue in North Walsham is an Access Only road.
Residents can register through the Big Switch and Save website
www.bigswitchandsave.co.uk.
Further opportunity to save money on gas and electricity bills.
All you need is a bill or a statement from your energy supplier which includes the energy you used last year or your estimated usage for the year ahead. Registering is quick and easy and up to five households can be registered from a single email address so you can help family, friends and neighbours to register if they do not have their own internet access. A helpline is available on 0800 0488285.

NORTH WALSHAM & BRADFIELD FLOWER CLUB
Earlier this month, we enjoyed a trip over to Holkham Hall on a perfect sunny day. The walled gardens are in the midst of being renovated and are already planted with a huge variety of cottage garden flowers which were attracting thousands of butterflies. There are also perenial plants and shrubs, along with vegetables and flowers grown for the hall itself. When the work is completed, this garden will be well worth a visit nex year and future years. In addition to other attractions, we were able to see an interesting exhibition of gowns by Belville Sasoon which are currently on display in Holkham Hall.
Having had our summer garden meeting in July and our Trip to Holkham last week, we are now really looking forward to our next Club Meeting on Thursday 26th September. Julia Knights is always a hugely popular and
humorous demonstrator so don't miss this one! Her title is "Lets Dance the Night Away" and, knowing Julia, it won't be too serious - so put the date in your diaries ladies. Refreshments at 2pm - Dem starts at 2.30pm. Parking free in the Catholic Church Car Park adjacent to Hall.
NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM
Summer seems to be fading fast now and our plants are showing some signs of coming to the end of their glory. We shall soon be taking out and replanting with a very different format than we have used before. This autumn we intend to be planting miniature daffodils and tulips together with dwarf wallflowers and violas in the tubs in the Town centre and dwarf wallflowers in the Cross in the Churchyard. This is all part of our new strategy of planting more sustainable things that will survive from one year to the next.
We are looking forward to seeing just how this will work out, but we can only try. In the past our usual format of planting pansies and primulas has resulted in there being no colour in the town for quite long periods over the winter months. This is not what we want, we
Finally - do take the time to have a look at the Flower Festival over three days this Bank Holiday Weekend, in the prettiest little Church at Potter Heigham. (signposted from the main road). We like to have fun there with our exhibits and this year's theme is "Vacation, Vacation, Vacation" 20 holiday destinations in floral exhibits will be filling the church enhanced by holiday music, ploughmans and cream teas - plus there are lovely walks and free parking - so no excuses. We can't promise to feature on Radio Norfolk's Treasure Quest again this year, but we can promise that the "cart" which has in previous years been transformed into Gertrude Jekyll (rose), West Side Story, Cinderella and a Milk Float (pictured), is this year set to be a colourful Gypsy Caravan (used for holidays obviously). Festival open 10 - 5, Sat - Monday. the next they were, for the most part, completely dead. Despite strenuous enquiries we were not able to come up with a satisfactory explanation as to exactly what had happened, but some sort of chemical seems to be the favourite, although who was responsible remains a mystery. We hope you all continue to enjoy our efforts and as usual thank all our supporters for their contributions, as without these people North Walsham would not be the attractive place it is.
are after all aiming to have colour at all times in the Town and this year we hope we may achieve this. I would like to thank once again all the early morning people who replant our plants that they find lying on the path, casualties of the vandals who have been “enjoying” themselves the night before. This behaviour seems so very selfish and all at ‘In Bloom’ are at a loss to understand why this still continues to happen. Just as we are at a LOCAL NORTH WALSHAM LAD loss to understand what TAKES OVER HAND CAR WASH happened to our two lovely beds on the AT ROSE CENTRE RETAIL PARK Yarmouth Road. One day they were looking the best they have ever been and

Norman Lamb announces dates for 2013 Village Tour Norman Lamb will be visiting villages across North Norfolk as part of his annual village surgery tour this year as in previous years.
At each scheduled stop, there will be the opportunity for residents to speak to Norman about issues of concern. Anyone who wants to talk to Norman at any of the locations can simply turn up at the given time – there is no need to book an appointment, though it would be helpful for people who know they intend to be at any of the locations to let the office know beforehand on 01692 403752, to give some idea of possible numbers.
Norman Lamb commented, “My annual village tour serves a fantastically important purpose. Every year I meet people in their own villages, and take up new issues as a result. Not everyone finds it easy to get to my regular surgeries that take place in North Norfolk’s towns. This is something I look forward to every year – it is an invaluable opportunity to find out what is happening in local communities.”

Back to school and back to session
In September, as the summer holidays end, children head back to school and people return to work. NHS Blood and Transplant is urging people in this area to make sure giving blood is part of their routine.
Blood is always required with hospitals in England and North Wales needing around 7,000 units of blood every day to treat patients for a range of reasons. It is used in accidents and emergencies but also during surgery and treatment for cancer and blood diseases, like leukaemia. Please book your appointment now and get the date in your diary to help others.
It is important that vital blood stocks are maintained at all times, as red blood cells have a shelf life of just 35 days and platelets a shelf life of only seven days. NHS Blood and Transplant needs to collect enough blood in the right quantities to meet patient needs and regular donors are crucial in enabling us to do

North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind
The Community Centre opened its doors again for our members to enjoy another wonderful afternoon.
It was a very hot afternoon but we all enjoyed our entertainment. ‘One man band’ Tony Bryant sang us a medley of songs from country and western, old time sing-a-long and ’50s & ’60s. Our members always enjoy listening to Tony - he is great singer as well as a great entertainer.
Last month was our annual Quiz and this too was a great afternoon all round, culminating in us being served with strawberry cream teas.
We would like to thank all our members who have supported our stall at the car boot sale. Raising funds for the club is always hard but every little bit helps. Our raffle and second hand clothing stall are also great fund raisers, with proceeds going towards the Club’s activities.
