In a Class of Their Own!

Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent

Patients and staff from Cromer Hospital’s renal dialysis unit ‘floated’ into Cromer Carnival parade last month in a squadron of cardboard Red Arrow jets, created by dialysis patient Paul Welsh, 51, of Honeysuckle Close, North Walsham.

Paul is a motor vehicle engineer and delivers The North Walsham Times every fortnight with his wife and family. He has been a renal dialysis patient for 17 years, attending Cromer Renal Unit three times a week and has previously had two kidney transplants. He also fundraises and raises awareness about kidney disease/failure and organ donation.

Paul’s creation was a Class Winning Float and attracted much interest from carnival goers, including local MP Norman Lamb.

Over 3 million people in the UK are at risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and 51,000 people in the UK are being treated for kidney failure. Every year around 6,600 people start renal replacement therapy. 90% of people, approximately 6,000, on the transplant list are waiting for a kidney. Less than 3,000 transplants are carried out each year. On average a kidney transplant lasts for 10 to 15 years.

Norman Lamb welcomes fall in North Norfolk unemployment

North Norfolk Member of Parliament Norman Lamb has welcomed news of falling unemployment in the area. Figures released last month show that the number of unemployed claimants in North Norfolk stands at 1,023, a 12% fall over the course of a year.

Norman Lamb commented “There are growing signs that the economy is starting to recover. Liberal Democrats in government will continue to focus on building a stronger economy and a fairer society, getting people into work. It is good to see that North Norfolk has seen a fall in the number of people without jobs. I continue to support businesses that have brought jobs to the area - Waitrose in North Walsham, the off-shore wind farm at Wells and the up-coming launch of Jonas Seafoods in Cromer for example. Our moves to cut tax bills for hard working families boosts the local economy too. There is still much to do to get the economy back on track but we are seeing real signs of progress. ”

Calls for more to be done to tackle long-term unemployment

Long-term unemployment continues to be an issue for many in North Norfolk with figures revealed in July 2013 showing a jump in numbers of those over 25 claiming job seekers allowance for over two years.

North Norfolk Labour Party has welcomed a fall in unemployment, but has real concerns about the bigger picture. Long-term youth unemployment in the constituency remains static in North Norfolk and the amount of people 25 and over claiming Job Seekers allowance for more than two years has also risen by 50 per cent.

Denise Burke, Labour's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said "So much work in North Norfolk is of a seasonal natural and indeed zero contract hours, and for those that have gained employment in the last few months there is a fear that they will be unemployed again post the summer season. Our MPs should not be complacent about the trends in unemployment and the bigger picture because long-term unemployment is still a big problem in north Norfolk."

Street Collection - CPL

I, Rachel Wright of the North Walsham & District branch of the Cats Protection, give notice that street collections took place at Sheringham and North Walsham on 10 August and 15 August.

The amounts raised were £167.88 and £126.71 respectively. No expenses and payments were incurred.

Slow roast belly of pork with scallops and roe

The first recipe from new Grove head chef Dave ‘Charlie’ Hodson has been on the à la carte menu now for a few weeks and is already established as an all-time classic.

‘It’s wonderful to be creating something very special at the Grove and I’m very excited to be taking over the monthly Cromer Times recipe slot. This is one of my signature dishes, pan-seared scallops with Norfolk belly pork and roe, and the perfect accompaniment is a little dash of chilli dressing. We use our own vegetables here in the gardens, so when Ann brought down some nice red chillies that her and John had grown in the greenhouse my eyes lit up. They lit up even more when I bit into one, as it was probably the fieriest, spiciest chilli I’ve ever eaten. Hot stuff here at the Grove! and a very, very warm welcome for me.

‘I do hope you enjoy my slow roasted belly of Norfolk pork with scallops and roe and I look forward to seeing you at the Grove very soon.’ My butcher, Icarus Hines in Cromer, will happily advise on the size of pork required, dependant on how many eating, and will also take the skin off and the bone out (pan ready, as we say!)

Prepare a bed of roughly chopped red apples, white onions and shallots, with a liberal sprinkling of Maldon sea salt - the

best salt on the market - ground medium black pepper, and lashings of maple syrup. Wrap the meat in parchment and foil, place on the bed and very slowly cook in the oven on a low heat on the middle shelf for at least six hours.

crème fraiche, black fish roe, fresh coriander and fresh chilli dressing - just be careful if you’re using Ann’s chillies! Finally my little luxury, if you fancy it, is

(You can try cooking on a bed of straw in exactly the same manner, which gives a truly scrumptious flavour with an earthy aroma and a naughty tingly taste on the tip of the tounge.)

When the meat is cooked, pan-fry your two scallops in sesame oil with a tinkle of seasoning. Please, please try to buy fresh scallops, as there is very little price difference but a huge advantage in flavour…! Sear them on each side for approximately one-two minutes and then let them rest for a couple of minutes more.

While it’s piping hot slice a good chunk of your pork belly onto a nice warm plate. Place your scallops as you like on the pork, and to perfectly execute dress with a small amount of

a very simple ragout of white beans.

Enjoy! Charlie

Six Years On

The Norfolk Cleaning Group was started as Norfolk Cleaning Ltd by husband and wife team Peter & Diane Murther. They felt it would be the ideal company to operate after they were unable to find a professional cleaning company that would look after their home & office in North Walsham.

Six years on with various accreditations and quality assurance systems, including the Norfolk County Councils Trusted Trader Scheme, the Norfolk Cleaning Group has grown phenomenally. They now employ over 50 members of staff, run a fleet of vehicles that can barely fit in their car park and manage over 150 holiday homes. Add to this the numerous local business’ & private homes they look after, growth was rapid and Norfolk Cleaning soon developed into a further two

companies; Norfolk Holiday Home Management & Norfolk Laundry Services. This created the large cleaning group that they hold today.

All the staff has a ‘can do’ ethos and react swiftly to customers needs. They feel that whatever someone asks, there’s always a way.

Just over a year ago, they had to move to larger premises, more than doubling the size to accommodate the professional laundry equipment needed for the laundry, along with extended offices for the administration needed to run such an expanding business.

All of this success has been a team effort and they would like to thank the management team, staff and customers for their repeat business and personal recommendations as they wouldn’t have been able to do it without them all!

Who knows where they we will be in another six years time…

Outstanding Results for Paston Students

Students at Paston Sixth Form College achieved impressive A level, AS level and BTEC results when they were published last month.

Principal Kevin Grieve said ‘We were particularly pleased by a rise in the overall AS level pass rate to over 90% and particularly the percentage of higher grades (A-B). Paston’s A level pass rate remained at over 98% with 49% achieving A* - B top grades and 75% A* - C grades. In total 18 subjects had a 100% pass rate with a record 10 A* grades in Mathematics and 11 A* grades in Sociology. This year we will again have over 90 ‘Norfolk County Scholars’. Students on BTEC Extended Diploma courses, equivalent to three A levels achieved a 100% pass rate with 71% achieving top distinction and merit grades’.

‘Our 2013 results are again outstanding and I am very proud of all the students’ and staff at the College” he continued. ‘Paston students have once again performed better than the national averages for schools and colleges, and have exceeded their own targets based on their GCSE grades’.

‘The number of young people choosing to study at Paston Sixth Form College continues to grow and we are expecting a record enrolment this Autumn. Students are travelling from an ever wider area to become part of our success. We have significantly improved our facilities including a new Student Services building and a Study Centre. Our £1.5m new Science block will be officially opened in the Autumn term which will further enhance our reputation’.

Our results show Paston is one of the top performing Sixth Form Colleges in the country and the whole county needs to be very pleased with our student achievement this year. Student performance in 2013 demonstrates staff can consistently achieve very high grades with students at the College. We are all very excited about celebrating this achievement in our annual awards evening on 12 September’. Tel: 01263 720 513 Email info@sandygulls.co.uk

‘These outstanding results reflect our encouragement of students to work hard, have high aspirations and develop the skills to be extremely successful’ said Mr Grieve. ‘Universities throughout the country will be receiving talented young graduates from Norfolk this Autumn as a result’.

BAAF looking for Adoption Champions

Have you an adoption connection? If so, you will know what an amazing thing it is to give a child a safe, loving and permanent home. There is a desperate need for more adopters throughout the UK and you could help inspire others to become a ‘forever family’ for a vulnerable child or sibling group.

The British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF) is looking for more people to volunteer as Adoption Champions to help spread the word about adoption. Even if you do not have a direct connection, but simply care about creating a better future for the most vulnerable of our children, you are very welcome to sign up as an Adoption Champion too.

Our adopted daughter is the most precious thing in our lives, so I have become a Champion to help encourage others to think about adoption – to show that adoption not only changes a child’s life in the best way possible, but also that it brings so much joy and reward to adoptive parents. Could you inspire others by sharing your experiences by writing a short blog or holding a talk in your local community? Or perhaps you could use your social media channels to support adoption. There are lots of different ways to get involved and the BAAF team are there to give you advice and support.

To find out more information and to register, please visit www.nationaladoptionweek.org.uk/adoptionchampions

Bothered by sagging facial or neck skin? You have many treatment options at the Coltishall Clinic Whilst non-surgical options such as botox, fillers and lasers are very effective for early signs of facial ageing, only a surgical face or neck-lift can remove a lot of sagging skin. Why an awake face lift? Many cosmetic surgery patients are telling their surgeons that they don't want to go under general anaesthesia. Being under general anaesthesia is fraught with risks. Operations under general anaesthesia also tend to have prolonged bruising and recovery involved. How do you perform face and neck lifts at the Coltishall Clinic? With our technique, the operation is performed under local anaesthesia with an awake patient. A special solution of saline (salt-water), epinephrine, and lidocaine is injected. Saline helps to separate the tissues, making the dissection less traumatic for the face and neck. Epinephrine causes the tiny blood vessels in the area to constrict, minimising bleeding and bruising. Lidocaine numbs the area to provide pain control and this lasts for 12-18 hours afterwards-reducing the need for painkillers. What types of face and neck lift do you offer at the Coltishall Clinic? • One stitch facelift- this is our minimally invasive facelift. It is suitable for younger patients or for those who do not want a full face or neck lift but desire a subtle result at low cost. One small incision hidden in the hair- lifts the jaw line.

• Thread lift- this is also a minimally invasive procedure and suitable for those patients who want to avoid the knife on their face. • Laser face lift- this is an excellent option when the main consideration is excess fat in chin and jowls. Laser can melt fat and also heats the surrounding tissue. This stimulates collagen formation and assists in skin and tissue tightening. • Full face and neck lift- we perform a tumescent facelift. It is also known by various other names such as weekend or mini-facelift, S-lift or MACS lift. One side is operated at a time. A small amount of skin in front of and below the ear is removed. The skin is lifted, underlying layer is tightened and finally the skin is repositioned and closed with fine sutures. • Neck lift only- this can be performed through a tiny 1-inch incision in the neck crease. How will I look after surgery? The change following your surgery can be dramatic. The days of prolonged swelling and bruising and having to hide away for weeks are long gone. Our patients do not generally get any significant bruising. What are the benefits of Coltishall Clinic face-lift procedure? It offers the following advantages:

• A natural look • Quick recovery • Minimal complication risk • Minimal scars • No hair loss • Less cost • Less risk of infection. With so many face and neck lift options on offer, along with a whole host of cutting edge non-surgical options, we are sure to have a solution to offer you. So why not give us a call on 0800 0430737 or log on to the website at www.coltishallclinic.co.uk.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

All but one of the feral cats mentioned in our last article have now been trapped, neutered and returned to the site. Hopefully the remaining elusive one will be caught soon, before there are any more kittens. The 8 kittens are really friendly and some do love to get on their fosterer’s lap. Two have already been vaccinated and are now available for homing, with 4 more going to the vets this week. Of the younger 2, Kirsch gave us cause for concern for a few days but is now thriving and they too will have been vaccinated when you read this article.

Among the cats taken into care recently were Dorothy and Felicity who were dumped out in the countryside in a cardboard box. Apart from having fleas both were healthy little kittens and we already have people interested in giving them homes.

Although “we help when we can”, a statement which used to form part of the Cats Protection motto, Stephanie gets lots of call for instances where unfortunately we do not have the powers to intervene. She usually has to redirect these calls to the RSPCA who we hope will be able to help. The calls can be from people concerned about the welfare of cats which have an owner who has gone away on holiday and left their cats to fend for themselves, or has thrown the cat out of the house to fend for itself, or there is a stray cat in the neighbourhood which appears to be injured or ill. The Animal Welfare Act provides guidelines on the care which owners should provide for their animals and the RSPCA are the charity which has authority to take action where the necessary level of care is not given. Unfortunately we do not have this authority so in these instances are powerless to help although we may want to. Please call the RSPCA if and when you become aware of such a situation and hopefully they will help the animal concerned. This does also apply to other animals as well as cats.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858.

PASTON SURGERY WILL BE HOLDING A WALK IN SESSION FOR FLU VACCINATION (ELIGIBLE PATIENTS) ON WEDNESDAY 16th OCTOBER 09.00 a.m. - 17.30 p.m. WE WILL NOT BE SENDING OUT LETTERS TO PATIENTS TO INVITE THEM

THE SURGERY WILL BE CLOSED FOR ANYTHING BUT FLU VACCINATIONS ON THE ABOVE DAY, SHOULD YOU REQUIRE A DR IN AN EMERGENCY TELEPHONE 01692 403015. FOR ALL OTHER ENQUIRIES PLEASE CONTACT THE SURGERY AS NORMAL ON THURSDAY 17th OCTOBER 12

Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Labour Candidate Stars in North Norfolk Episode of ‘Come Dine with Me’

Denise Burke faced her first test as Labour's parliamentary candidate for North Norfolk when she attempted to impress three dinner guests on Channel 4's Come Dine with Me. In doing so she became the first person standing for parliament to appear on the show.

Denise, who was selected as North Norfolk Labour's party candidate in July, signed up for the programme at the start of the year and was filmed on the same week in February that she was helping the party contest a by-election in Cromer.

She jokes that many in the Labour Party expected her to send out a political message by serving stuffed Lamb - a reference to her rival MP Norman Lamb - but she opted for a meal that has a flavour of the coast using local produce instead.

The contestants did not have a chance to see the programme before it went out on Thursday 5 September, and Denise wasn't sure what to expect. However, she told her fellow Labour activists to plan for some surprises, particularly when her labrador Millie appeared as an unexpected guest to make the meal a dog's dinner!

Come Dine With Me in North Norfolk was scheduled to go out on Channel 4 on Thursday 5 September at 5pm, repeated on 4Seven the following day (Friday 6 September) at 10am, and following broadcast, is available on the Channel 4 website. For up-to-date times see www.norfolklabour.co.uk

Denise commented ‘The programme was filmed during a freezing cold week in February, but it didn't stop the camera crew wanting to film some of the beautiful parts of north Norfolk including Happisburgh lighthouse and beach. The producers were even keen to capture some of the Labour Party campaigning in Cromer.

It was great fun, and certainly reveals a few surprises about North Norfolk Labour's Parliamentary Candidate. We all appeared to get on well during the dinners but until I watch it I won’t know what was said about each other on camera after each meal!’

NORJAM 2014 for Victory Explorers

The Norfolk Jamboree (NORJAM) has been held in several forms over the years. The County held a ‘Jamboree’ to welcome the World Chief Scout to the County in 1918 and again had a Jamboree in 1921.

The idea of a fixed jamboree every set number of years was born around 1924 and several sites were used including Sennow Park, Woodbastwick, Sandringham, Holkham and Blicking.

The Jamborees as we know them today, really started after the World War and were held in Sandringham and Sennow. They stopped in the 60s due to the health and safety concerns of the day and the rising costs of putting the infrastructure in place.

In the late 70s they were again looked at and, in 1983, the Norfolk International Jamboree was held at the Norfolk Showground. The infrastructure was able to be found on this permanent site and some 200 young people gathered from 14 countries. The Jamboree has been held every four years since - in 1987, 1991,1995,1999 and 2003.It changed to three years due to the World Scout Jamboree in 2007 and it was agreed to try and plan and deliver the next one in three years. This was done, and the County welcomed some 23 countries to the 2006 International Jamboree with the next and last one in 2010. The 14th Jamboree will be held in 2014.

The Norfolk International Jamboree has

become well known throughout the UK and the Scouting and Guiding worlds and offers a life changing experience to those who come. We now see some 4000 young people with over 1000 adults involved in the delivery. A world of difference from 1918 to 2014 but one thing remains the same, the delivery of a quality experience for young people from different backgrounds - ‘like plums in a pudding, all mixed up’ Baden-Powell once said.

The Victory Explorer unit in North Walsham would like to take a group of Young People to next year’s event but as with everything these days, it isn’t cheap!

Andrea Canham explains ‘within the group are siblings, which means double the expense. This is why we are organising events to raise monies to help reduce the cost to the parents/ carers. We would like to raise £2.5k if possible.

So far the fundraising events we have planned are a Jumble Sale at 1st NW Scout Headquarter, North Walsham on 29 September and an Autumn Fayre also at HQ on 2 November. We will also be holding a Christmas Raffle. More ideas are in the pipeline, but we are always open to new ideas’. If anyone is able to help in any way

please contact Andrea on 01692 406415

Victory Explorers, Alex Ryan, writes ‘As a scout I attended NORJAM 2010 and it was one of the best experiences of my life so far. I met loads of scouts from other troops from across the UK and from other countries. We had a really great time with all the activities that were laid on during the 7 day festival with activities such as water skiing and diving which for many are not activities that are normally accessible. Now as a Young Leader and Victory Explorer Scout I shall be going back next year to help the younger members.

It’s a great seven days of fun and activity but of course all these things come at a cost so we’re holding a number of fund raising events between now and 2014 to help subsidise the 1st North Walsham Scouts.

So please, if you see a sign asking for support it may be as simple as a jumble sale, autumn fayre or coffee morning - please take the time to visit and make a small contribution to support our fund raising efforts’

North Walsham Photographic Group Competition

North Walsham Photographic Group recently organised a public photographic competition. A total of 182 entries were received and these were judged by professional judge – Bill Day CAPGB.

Each entry was displayed as part of the Group’s Annual Exhibition of Members’ Work in the Atrium Gallery, North Walsham.

A prize winners’ ceremony was held last month at a special evening opening of the Exhibition.

Bill Day gave a short critique of the winning

prints, explaining to the public the strong points of the photographs which he judged to be the best in the competition.

The winner of the adult class was Tony Howes with his entry entitled ‘Barn Owl in the Mist’ Twenty two entries were received into the junior class and the judge found it most difficult to make his final choice. Entrants’ ages ranged from 4 to 15 years. The winner was finally chosen as 12 year old Caitlin Ricketts with her Caitlin and Declan Ricketts

print entitled ‘Reflections of Fairhaven’. The first prize in the junior class turned out to be a Canon Ixus compact camera. Second prize was won by 6 year-old Samuel Nutt with his photograph of a Dinosaur and third prize was given to 9 year-old Declan Samuel Nutt Rickets with his photo ‘Tracks in the Sand’.

Over 100 people attended the event which was also visited by Thordis Fridriksson from Radio Norfolk.

Region's Ambulance Chief Grilled over Plans to Bring Improvements to North Norfolk

A leading ambulance campaigner from north Norfolk has met the interim Chief Executive of the East of England Ambulance Service Trust to grill him on his plans for the future of our ambulance service.

The August meeting between Denise Burke, Labour's parliamentary candidate, and Andrew Morgan was the latest stage of the Act on Ambulances campaign launched in 2012 by North Norfolk Labour Party in response to local residents’ concerns about poor response times and slow turnaround at the Norfolk & Norwich hospital. Despite several changes announced by the Trust, the campaigners remain concerned about ambulance performance and will continue to campaign for a better

service in North Norfolk.

The meeting took place at Potter Heigham station. Speaking after her meeting Denise Burke said “We had a productive and frank meeting. Andrew Morgan acknowledged that the ambulance service in North Norfolk is not acceptable and needs substantial improvements. The trust is still developing its plans for board approval. Andrew recognises there

are no quick fixes and that this is a long term turnaround. Their plans need to have clear targets and timelines which Andrew agreed he will take on board. We will monitor progress closely to ensure that North Norfolk’s residents and visitors get the ambulance service they need. NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM

Our special coffee morning in aid of funds to buy a tree for Pat Stott on 22 August went very well indeed.

We raised a total of £271 which will enable us to purchase a tree and give money to Pat’s favourite charities. We would like to thank all our helpers, and all the people who so generously gave prizes and made cakes and scones. We had some really lovely prizes and it all goes to show how much Pat was liked in the town.

British and Hollywood movie star David Niven is brought to life on Sunday 15 September by Paul

Helen McDermott, best known as a favourite Anglia TV presenter for many years, proves her singing and acting skills along with fellow TV performer Adrian Wright in Cowards in the Wings. Joining them in this 40th anniversary celebration of Coward’s fine wit, will be pianist Annette Jude and Coward raconteur John Knowles. The show starts at 7.30pm with all tickets £12.

There will be a free glass of wine for all those who pre-book for both the Niven and Coward shows.

The Atrium, off Spenser Avenue, North Walsham, can be found between the high school and the sports centre. It is wheelchair friendly.

To book visit www.theatrium.org.uk or call 01692 400080.

In the next few weeks we will be replacing our glorious non stop begonias with winter bedding, bulbs and wallflowers and hope to maintain as good a display as we had throughout the summer.

It is always sad to remove plants that have been as good as these, but now that the nights are really pulling in and the school holidays are over we are unable to put it off any longer. It will be all hands to the pumps to get the work done before the clocks are altered and winter officially arrives.

We do now have a web blog so you can keep up to date with what we are up to - www.northwalshaminbloom.wordpress.com - please look us up and leave us a comment on how you think we have done this year.

IMPROVEMENT OF WORK/LIFE BALANCE FOR FAMILIES By Miranda Marshall Partner at Hayes + Storr

On the 25 February 2013, MPs passed the second reading of the new Children and Families Bill in the House of Commons. This proposes the extension of the statutory rights, both in employment and family law, that both parents have in their children’s upbringing. It is not yet law.

Maternity leave is to be used by the father instead of, or as well as, the other, -shared in blocks or taken together.

The Bill also proposes extending the right to request flexible working to all employees from 2015, rather than just parents and carers, as at present.

In the event of family breakdown there will be legal recognition that it is in the child’s interest for both parents to remain involved in the child’s life (except in cases where there is a risk of harm).

The old concepts of “residence” and “contact” are to be replaced with a single Child Arrangement Order. This can set out

where the children live and how much time they spend with the other parent. It will remove the old labels of “contact” or Shared Residence Order.

The changes should not affect the Family Court’s approach that the child should sustain a relationship with both parents, even though the child may spend less time with one parent. The new terminology is couched in terms of “involvement” so as to encourage shared parenting.

Employers will need to be careful not to discriminate against fathers when considering flexible working requests, particularly in the light of the government’s wish to encourage shared parenting from the earliest days.

enable and encourage parents to juggle work and children and to maintain a better work/ life balance.

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) currently operates 46 CCTV cameras in Cromer, Fakenham, North Walsham, Sheringham and Wells-next-the-Sea. The service costs the Council just under £200k per annum to run, and, as in all areas of the council’s work, it has been undertaking a review of its CCTV provision in the district to see if any savings can be identified.

NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets Rhodri Oliver said “The objective of the review was to see what the options could be for the provision of the council’s CCTV operations in the future, alongside identifying potential savings”.

During the course of the review the internal working party, chaired by NNDC Councillor for Lancaster North Ward, Fakenham, Annie Claussen-Reynolds, consulted stakeholders, covering town councils, Chambers of Trade and service users, including the Police. The stakeholders have now been informed of the working party’s conclusion, which is that there are three possible courses of action: a) outsourcing the service, on a responsive basis only, to The Borough Council of Kings Lynn and West Norfolk b) continuing an in-house, dedicated service, but with reduced operator hours and using wireless technology c) dispensing with the service completely.

The findings of the working party will be deliberated by the NNDC Overview and Scrutiny Committee on 11 September. NNDC Cabinet will then discuss a final report at its meeting on 7 October and will decide on the future of the service then.

Design and Technology Weekend

What makes a pupil want to go to boarding school? The chance to be independent, spend more time with friends, engage in more extra-curricular activities or perhaps just to cut down on or avoid a potential long commute home? There are many reasons why a family might decide to try boarding life for their child. With more and more children engaging in after school activities, clubs and sporting fixtures the commitment of trying to ferry your offspring to each event can frazzle even the most organised parent.

Gresham’s Prep School based in the beautiful Georgian town of Holt in North Norfolk has been running a range of Boarding Taster weekends for a number of years, providing children with the opportunity to sample school life and get a real taste of what life is like in a modern boarding and day school. Pupils get the chance to participate in a range of activities, familiarise themselves with the school, meet new friends and staff. Many children before they start a new school really appreciate the chance to get a flavour of what school life is like where the chance to have a sleepover with new found friends adds to the excitement and will often go a long way to dispel any concerns or worries they might have.

This year Gresham’s Prep School plans to run a Design and Technology (D&T) Boarding Taster weekend on 15th and 16th November which is open to children in Years 5 and 6.

The D&T weekend provides five sessions for children to design and make a project using a range of materials and components. They get the chance to use hand tools and workshop machinery including pillar drills and disc sanders. Part of their project also includes computer-based tasks in the School’s ICT room. Not only will children make a project to take home, they will also record their research and ideas in a design portfolio. As well as D&T activities the weekend allows children to try out some of the School’s facilities, meet new friends, and sample the delicious school dinners - yes they really are delicious - before retiring to the warm, comfortable dorms.

Gresham’s Prep School is a coeducational day and boarding school for children aged 8-12 years offering a warm and welcoming environment where all children thrive and enjoy a range of exciting activities from inter-school events, school plays, musical concerts and performances and educational field trips.

If you are interested in finding out more information about the Design & Technology Boarding Taster weekend, please contact Peter Laycock (Head of Design & Technology) pmlaycock@greshams.com or visit https://www.greshams.com/admissions/taster-weekends

Sainsbury’s North Walsham puts all store waste to positive use Sainsbury’s has achieved its 20x20 sustainability target of putting all its store waste to positive use and diverting it from landfill and customers at North Walsham have played a part in this significant achievement.

The store situated in Bacton Road provides customers with in-store battery and plastic bag recycling banks. Sainsbury’s North Walsham Store Manager Rob Wilkinson said: “Our recycling facilities are used every day by our customers and it’s great that they’re helping us to reduce our impact on the environment and send no waste to landfill”.

Another star recycling initiative set up at Sainsbury’s North Walsham is through the store’s food donation partner scheme. Sainsbury’s has over 300 food donation partnerships in place and the scheme sees surplus food which is still healthy, nutritious and within its use-by-dates donated to charities and community projects across the UK.

Sainsbury’s North Walsham supports Hillside Animal Sanctuary. The charity collects food twice every week and receives items including bread, fruit and vegetables. The donated food is used for the animals.

Wendy Valentine said “The food provided by Sainsbury’s really makes a massive difference to our work. There is always lots of hungry mouths to feed here and it’s great to know that no Sainsbury’s food is wasted”.

Getting in touch with the grass roots The Leader and Chief Executive of North Norfolk District Council (NNDC)

have offered to visit Town and Parish Councils in the District to tell them more about what’s going on at the District Council and to answer questions that parishes might have about particular issues in their area. Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of the District Council, and Sheila Oxtoby, Chief Executive, made the offer earlier in the year and the response has been very positive. So far they, and other NNDC Cabinet and Strategic Leadership Team members have visited ten Town and Parish Councils - ten more are planned for September, with dates to be agreed for 30 more between October and March 2014. Tom FitzPatrick said “The meetings we have attended so far have been really useful. We have not only been able to talk with local people about a wide range of subjects, but have also found out what really concerns them right now, which is hugely important when it comes to making decisions that will affect everyone in North Norfolk. We have also been able to explain how the District Council works and what it does for residents.” Ann Moore, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group at NNDC, said “I really support this initiative. The more opportunities people who live in North Norfolk have to tell the District Council how they feel and what they really care about, the better. Of course locally elected Members provide the most important link between residents and the workings of the District Council, but it is also important that the leadership is directly aware of the issues that concern everyone.” District Councillor for Holt Michael Baker (UKIP) said “I am pleased to see the Corporate Leadership Team of North Norfolk District Council out of the office and visiting Parish and Town Councils. For too long there has been an 'us and them' approach. This is now being put right under the leadership of the current Chief Executive.” Following one of the visits, Chairman of Sea Palling Parish Council Andrew Coles said “The visit to Sea Palling was extremely useful. We were able to tackle a number of local issues and they have already done most of what they said they would do. I’d like to see meetings like these on a regular basis” and Sculthorpe Parish Chairman Tony Walters added “The consensus after the meeting was that it was very agreeable, helpful, professional, educational and enjoyable.” Town and Parish Councils interested in taking up the offer of a visit should contact NNDC on 01263 516017 or email kirsty.read@north-norfolk.gov.uk

Dear Margaret,

When we go to post our letters, parcels or even open a new account at the Post Office, we should expect to be dealt with by fully trained and dedicated Post Office staff. Yet we are now finding that the government is allowing businesses to operate Post Offices with shop staff who have very little training. No disrespect to the workers, but doing the post is quite different to selling a can of beans. This downgrading of workers to do more qualified work on the cheap is going on far too often, and devaluing our services. Even when workers take the time to get more qualified they are only rewarded with a few pence more an hour.

Is this the way our postal services will be going with the privatisation of the Royal Mail? It's a bleak vision of the future if so.

Recently MP Norman Lamb, who helped oversee the proposals for selling the company off last year, commented that the Post Office & Royal Mail has benefited from a surge in online shopping. It seems more likely that those millions of pounds in profits has come from the government fattening up the company before its sale through increased prices.

I expect those prices to rise even higher after their privatisation plans go through. David Spencer Southrepps

only Norwich City FootballSheri Club choose Big C for their first of the season match day collection

Supporters of Norwich City were asked to give to their local cancer charity when they attended the match on 31 August.

Norwich City took on Southampton that day. Norwich City allows for five match day collections each year and the first one of the season benefitted the local cancer charity Big C.

Jonathan Redding of the Big C said of the collection ‘This was a wonderful opportunity to increase awareness of the charity amongst a large percentage of the local community it supports. It is through this local support that we are able to be here in the first place. This collection helped to raise funds for the Big C centre at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital.

We also fund other projects, including cancer research at the UEA, hospital equipment and services around the county. In October we will open a further centre in Kings Lynn. All of the money we raise in Norfolk stays in Norfolk.’

Holistic Therapy Day

21st September, Merchants Place, Cromer, 10.00am to 4.00pm

Following the success of a similar event held in June, it was decided to hold another one. The idea of these days is to give people who have heard of “alternative therapies but never tried them, to come and talk to the therapists there and perhaps have a treatment or two. For instance, you may wonder what on earth are Shiatsu, or Reiki and Seichem healing and how could these treatments help me?

As before the taster sessions start from ÂŁ5. Of course, it is also there for people who have had treatments before and wish to try them again. As well as the practitioners from the event in June, this time we can offer hydrotherm massage as well. For the full list of participants see the advertisement below.

Merchants Place, Cromer, is the most wonderful venue for an event of this type. It is located right at the HOLISTIC THERAPY DAY end of Church Street, 21st September 2013 just opposite the MERCHANTS PLACE, CROMER Sticky Earth CafĂŠ. 10.00am to 4.00pm Entrance to the Look after your Health & Wellbeing and come event is free and and have a pamper with a treatment or two. refreshments are Taster sessions start from ÂŁ5 available throughout the day. only HappisburghNWT Lifeboat Station

Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers were called into action on 20 August to a small broken-down fishing boat 4 miles North of Sea Palling.

Pagers alerted the crew of Douglas Paley the Station’s Atlantic, at 12.50pm, that a 15ft fishing boat with one person on board had lost all power four miles north of Sea Palling. The Atlantic was en route at 1pm with Tim Grimmer at the helm and Tony Phenix and Dave Cato as crew.

They arrived on scene at 1.11pm. With the help of another fishing boat in the area they located the broken-down fishing boat quickly. The crew then set up the lifeboat to tow the fishing boat back to Sea Palling.

Both boats arrived at Sea Palling at 1.56pm and the crew helped the fisherman ashore with his boat.

The lifeboat then returned to station, re-housed and was ready for service at 2.30pm.

3km in 20 minutes… aged 6!

Farah Bycroft of Happisburgh Road, North Walsham, was recently mentioned in 29 June issue of the North Walsham Times, ahead of her trip to Sheffield on 15 August to compete in the British Transplant Games.

This amazing spectacle, where all of the competing children and adults have received a life-saving transplant, lasted for four days and began with a parade through the city’s streets. Along with other fun characters for the children, Minnie and Mickey Mouse were there to greet and mix with them before teams from around the UK (and from Australia and the US!) proudly walked through Sheffield to end up at City Hall for the Opening Ceremony. Although Farah missed out on any events medals this time, on Saturday she ran the 3km Donor Fun Run with her step-grandad and crossed the line in just over 20 minutes, beating lots of the grown-ups! Through sponsorship and donations, Farah raised over £1000 for her transplant team and her family would like to say a huge thank-you to everyone who was kind enough to help get Farah to the Games this year, especially Millfield Primary School and Howdens Joinery (Cromer) whose joint donations raised around a third of the final total.

This year’s Games were a huge success enjoyed by all who attended. Next year’s Games are to be held in Bolton, Lancashire where Farah will hopefully compete once again through the kindness and generosity of all who may sponsor her to go.

NW Town F.C. MATCH REPORTS

Bradenham V North Walsham (3-1) North Walsham Town 1st Team began life in Anglian Combination Division One with a trek to Hale Road to face Bradenham Wanderers and after putting a performance devoid of quality, succumbed to a 3-1 defeat.

Despite missing a number of players, the Town squad on view had the necessary requisite to achieve something, but fell woefully short of the standards set as the home side performed well and punished Town. The referee’s whistle brought to an end a disappointing afternoon for The Angels and the squad had to accept the harsh reality of what they will come up against this campaign.

Hellesdon V North Walsham (1-2)

Town 1st Team travelled to Woodview Road to tackle Hellesdon, who themselves were very impressive in dismantling Horsford 4-1 in their season opener.

Town held firm to claim the three points and get their season underway.
