North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Little did I realise when I wrote last time that we would have a perfect example of what happens if someone does not update their cat’s micro chip records when they move and the cat in question would be one that we had re-homed. We received a call from the vets when a little cat was brought in by a concerned member of the public as they have no near neighbours and it was apparent that it was a stray. As the cat was micro chipped they were able to establish that it had been in our care and, knowing that the owners no longer lived at the address on the records, contacted us to see if had been reported lost or whether we had any other contact details. Unfortunately, we were unable to help but are obviously concerned for the cat’s future welfare as the person who is caring for him at present does not want another cat. The vets have now been able to establish the area where the people have moved to and with co-operation from the cat owner’s own vet are trying to make contact with them. As the little cat is half way from the area where his owners now live and his old home we believe he was probably trying to make his way back there. We are hoping his owner can be found and he can be re-united with them, otherwise he may come back into our care.

At this time of the year the vast majority of those re-homed are kittens although we have also seen several of the lovely young mums leave our care too. Some have been in dire need of some tender loving care when they join us and it is remarkable how quickly they respond when they receive it. Because they all receive a check at the vets before they go to new homes we can also identify any problems and this has been the situation with two little kittens recently. One little kitten had a hernia which will be repaired when he is neutered but the other has a serious heart murmur. Kittens do often have heart murmurs when they go for their first vaccination and these have usually disappeared by the time they have the second. This will not be the case in this instance however. Both kittens have been lucky to find new homes with understanding

Special Olympics Norfolk holds taster day at UEA

Continued from front cover... Richard Sanders, chairman of Special Olympics Norfolk, explained: “The taster day represents a welcoming and sociable introduction to sport for adults at the superb sporting facilities offered by the UEA campus. “We hope as many adults as possible with special needs, aged 16 and above, will take up this fantastic opportunity to try out new sports, have a lot of fun and find out what Special Olympics is about and up to across the county.

“Although this event is aimed at adults over the age of 16, Special Olympics Norfolk is also hoping to hear from families of learning disabled children for whom we can arrange training from the age of 6 and competition in sport and athletics from the age of 8.

“We already have almost 100 people of all ages from every corner of Norfolk taking part in sporting events and competing regionally and nationally and, in some instances, on the international stage for Great Britain around the world.

“Special Olympics Norfolk recently had four gymnasts and a tennis player compete very successfully for the Eastern region at the Special Olympics National Summer Games in Bath at the start of September. They returned with a stunning haul of 24 medals between them!” added Richard.

Saturday 12 October at 7.30pm at Jubilee Family Centre, Norwich Rd, Aylsham, NR11 6JG. Viewing of the exhibits from 3pm

Some of the county’s best artists have donated their paintings, sculptures and glass work to raise money for materials for a volunteer’s house in Zambia.

The evening will include: • “Keys” auctioneers kindly taking the bids • A professional wine taster with wine to try together with cheeses and chutneys from our local area • Music from the wonderful Ade Cockburn

Come along and experience what promises to be a wonderful night for acquiring stunning pieces of artwork at great prices, in support of a very worthwhile cause!

Help Children in Zambia's "Building a Future" Project October 2014

Many of the street children of Lusaka, Zambia have been very ‘damaged‘ by their experiences - they need professional help. That help can be freely obtained from worldwide volunteers. We are hoping to build a house that will accommodate up to six volunteer doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals! We have a team of builders from North Norfolk who are donating their costs, time and skills to go and build it in October 2014! How great is that! They are also passing on their skills and tools to the older children, empowering them to earn a livelihood for themselves and future generations. We need to now raise £25,000 for the building materials. Please come along on 12 October to help us.

FREE Spooky Fun at Bure Valley Railway! Throughout the half term holiday, 26th October to 3rd November 2013, the Bure Valley Railway will be holding its popular children’s event, “The Spooky Express”. Trains will operate throughout each day from both Aylsham and Wroxham Stations (see timetable).

A children’s competition to see how many spooky items can be spotted on the train journey, a colouring corner and a decorated Whilstlestop Café add to this themed event. Also, the Railway’s resident Bear will be dressed up for the occasion to welcome each train at Aylsham Station.

To make this a truly family friendly event, the Railway is giving free travel for every child when accompanied by a fare-paying adult (maximum of 2 children per adult, train only). No prior booking required.

Susan Munday, Business Manager and organiser of this event, says, “Children of all ages can enjoy lots of spooky fun without it being too scary!”

Lots to bid for at Charity Auction From tickets to the Cromer Pier Christmas Show to a cricket bat signed by the English cricket captain and the Essex team to a signed first edition of the book ‘The Casual Vacancy’ from j K Rowling, the White Horse Charity Auction in Overstrand on Saturday 12 October in aid of Nelson’s journey is sure to attract a great deal of interest.

The cricket bat, donated and signed by England cricket captain Alastair Cook and the rest of the Essex Cricket Team, has already created quite a bit of interest and is sure to by one of the star lots. Also attracting interest is the book ‘The Casual Vacancy’ written by JK Rowling under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. As a signed first edition it will perhaps in the future realise a considerable return.

The Charity Auction on 12 October is accompanied by a 3-course pre auction dinner with £5 from every ticket being donated to the charity. Tickets cost £35 per person and are on sale now at the White Horse. Strictly limited to 85 people guests will be treated to pre dinner drinks and canapés upon arrival at 7pm with the dinner commencing at 7.30pm before the auction at 9pm. Brewers Greene King who are supporting the event have already donated a keg of their IPA with a free pint being offer to all those attending the auction. They have also agreed to sponsor the event, which will allow the White Horse to advertise the event to an even wider audience. Still to be announced by Greene King are the other lots that they will be donating to the auction.

Greene King Sales Development Manager

Andrew Galpin said “We are delighted to have been asked to support this great event and to help raise money for such an important charity. We wish the White Horse and everyone involved the very best of luck and hope that it will raise ‘lots’ of money”.

Amongst the other lots already promised are tickets to a meeting at Fakenham Race Course, a food hamper, tickets for two to Newmarket races with access to the owners ring, a framed Norwich City shirt signed by the team and a year’s swimming pass from Woodlands Leisure.

Darren Walsgrove owner of the White Horse said “This is a really exciting event and I am delighted with the support it has already received - we have high hopes that it will raise a considerable amount of money and help boost our fundraising for Nelson’s Journey. My thanks to Greene King and all those how have already supported the event with items for the auction. I know there are still more to come so everyone at the White Horse is hoping for a really great evening”.

The event is part of the White Horse’s year long fundraising commitments to their Charity

of the Year, Nelson’s Journey, a charity dedicated to supporting bereaved children and young people throughout Norfolk.

Based in Norwich the charity was founded in 1997 and has to date helped over 1,500 children between the ages of 0 to 17 inclusive who have experienced the death of a significant person in their life. In the case of very young children this is by giving support and advice to the remaining parent or guardians.

The name Nelson’s Journey was chosen to inspire and reflect the two main aspects of the charity - it is local, hence the use of Norfolk’s own Admiral Nelson, while ‘Journey’ was chosen as bereavement is a journey which begins the minute your loved one dies and lasts a lifetime. The work that the group begun 15 years ago continues to develop and reaches new highs each year.

Entirely dependent on donations from individuals, groups, trusts and organisations, as well as money raised by their own fundraising events, Nelson’s Journey’s vision is of a Norfolk where no bereaved child has to cope alone with their loss and has the support they need to move forward positively with their lives.

Full details of all the lots will be available at the White Horse from Friday 4 October. Sealed bids will be accepted until Friday 11 October and will be opened on the night when the lots are being auctioned.

INNER WHEEL CLUB OF NORTH WALSHAM

The Club’s summer outing took place on Monday, 9 September. Members met for lunch at the ‘Waterside’ Restaurant at Rollesby. It was a beautify summer day and we were able to have drinks outside by the broad, admiring the wildlife, before going inside for our meal.

New Social Group for Young Disabled Adults in North Walsham

Are you interested in being involved in a new Young Persons Social Group, as a member or a volunteer?

The Group will be primarily aimed at younger adults with physical disabilities aged between 18 and 35. Activities will be decided by the members using the group. It has been acknowledged that there are limited social opportunities for younger adults with disabilities in the North Walsham area.

If this interests you, a meeting is being held to discuss ideas around setting up such a group and the type of activities people might like to do.

Secretary, Gillian Owles, had wrapped pretty deep pink cyclamen plants for the three ladies who had recently had birthdays – Barbara Payne, Ann Lake and Meg Rees. Ann was also presented with some beautify yellow roses as she had just celebrated her golden wedding anniversary. On 28 October the ‘Autumn Eats’ charity lunch will be held at the Community Centre between 12 noon and 2pm. North Walsham Rotary Club members join us in organising this.

The meeting is to be held on Wednesday 16 October at 7pm in The Saddlers Shop, St Nicholas Church Hall Complex,Vicarage St, North Walsham. NR28 9DQ. For more information contact, Stephen Hurley on 07748335041 or 01603 154822 or email stephen.hurley@norfolk.gov.uk

Would you like to sing the magnificent coronation anthem ‘Zadok The Priest’?

Anyone interested in joining the Inner Wheel Club would be most welcome. Please telephone Stella, the President, on 01692 500668 for further information.

The level of response will enable us to gauge the level of interest and decide how and if to move forward with the idea.

Sing (and giggle a bit) with Cantamus Community Choir

Composed by George Frideric Handel for the coronation of George II in 1727, this rousing piece has been sung at every subsequent British coronation, including the anointing of Queen Elizabeth II, and will be sung by Cantamus Community Choir at their coming October concert together with works by Haydn and Elgar.

Cantamus predominantly sing traditional and choral music. We are a very friendly choir, prone to the odd fit of giggles, so if you would like the challenge of singing choral music please join us.

We rehearse every Thursday at 7.30pm in St James Church, Southrepps, NR11 8NR. No audition or experience is required and don’t be put off if you have little or no experience of reading music. All you need is a desire to have fun, sing and add to Cantamus’ strong community spirit. Our members come from Sheringham, Happisburgh, Banningham, North Walsham, and towns / villages in between. So if you would like to join Cantamus but transport is a problem, please contact our musical director David Ballard as a lift may be possible. More information from DavidBallard@hotmail.co.uk or telephone 07785 782498.

65 extra frontline staff for north Norfolk's ambulance service

'Act on Ambulances' campaigners have welcomed the promise of 65 extra front-line staff here after the ambulance trust pledged to treat north Norfolk as a priority area.

The campaign, started by North Norfolk Labour Party, was launched after concerns about response times in the area over a year ago.

Throughout the campaign Act on Ambulances campaigners have kept the pressure on both the previous and interim chief executives pointing out to them the ambulance trust's failures and highlighting the stories they have heard on the ground.

The concerns about response times from both residents and campaigners were confirmed in the Anthony Marsh report earlier this year. Denise Burke, Labour's parliamentary candidate for the constituency, has welcomed the news stating: "We hope the Trust will now deliver on this promise so that those living in north Norfolk can finally regain confidence in the ambulance service.

Labour selects their candidate for the North Walsham East by-election

North Norfolk Labour Party members have re-selected Stephen Burke to fight the North Walsham East by-election.

Mr Burke, from Happisburgh, fought the division in the Norfolk County Council elections in May and increased the Labour vote by 240pc compared to four years before. He says that Labour is up for the fight in North Walsham East and the surrounding villages.

Stephen sits on both the board of the Victory Housing Trust and North Norfolk Community Transport, and has a passionate belief that affordable housing and transport are crucial to helping local people work, study, and live in North Norfolk. He is a volunteer at Happisburgh lighthouse and is a campaigner on local issues like ambulance response times, access to the beach and coastal defences.

PLEASE CAN YOU HELP ?

The Royal British Legion raises a large percentage of the monies they spend supporting current and former service personnel through the annual Poppy Appeal.

This year, in North Walsham, we are fortunate in having received invitations from both the major supermarkets to collect in their stores. Unfortunately old age and infirmity reduces our pool of volunteer collectors each year and we are desperately in need of further volunteers to ensure we raise as much as possible to help support the Legion’s work. If you could spare a couple of hours any day between 28 October and 9 November to assist us please contact the local Poppy Appeal organiser, David Audley, on 01692 404418.

Mr Burke has said that the resignation of the sitting Lib Dem county councillor is yet another sign that the Lib Dems had “let the electorate down again”.

Stephen Burke, Labour’s candidate for North Walsham East, said “After just four months since the county council elections the people of North Walsham East are being asked to vote again for a new councillor. The Lib Dems have let the electorate down again, and I believe that Labour stands a good chance of winning this seat. We had a significant increase in the vote last time, and we will be building upon this over the coming weeks. Only the Labour Party can be trusted to stand up for ordinary people up against three other Tory parties.”

Find out more about Stephen Burke at www.norfolklabour.co.uk. The by-election takes place on October 24.

The garden party meeting held at Joan Etheringtons in August was well attended and cream teas were enjoyed by members and husbands. A raffle held in the afternoon raised twenty five pounds for our funds.

Our speaker for the evening was Mike Stew who with some truly amazing photography gave us an illustrated introduction to the unseen world of a Norfolk wood. Mikes stories of the woodland habitat in conjunction with the wonderful photographs captured beautifully the woodlands secrets of wildflowers, insects, animals, birds and pond life offering us an opportunity to observe this rarely seen world.

The next meeting will be 9 October and the speaker will be Mrs M Furness “Home Made Chocolates” The competition is a picture that could be used on a chocolate box.

The Group meeting is being held on 15 October 7pm at the Community Centre.

We are a friendly group and extend a warm welcome to visitors and new members so come along and join us. Our meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 7.15pm at St Benet Hall, Vicarage Street, North Walsham. For membership information please contact Mrs Kim Reynolds on 01692 406246.

KITCHEN FRONTS of Norfolk

Bluebell Pond Clean

The clean up on Saturday 8 September was once again a major operation and by lunchtime the 20 ton skip was full to overflowing with overgrown plants from within the pond and its surrounding area.

A job of this magnitude is impossible to complete unless you have a willing labour force. I am pleased to say this is not a problem for the Bluebell Pond Society.

By 10am Danny Lincoln, Rita Smith, George Blackburn, Tony Wiles, Chris Hicks, Brian Abbs, Andy, Oliver Haynes- Browne, Josh Munro, Andrew Browne, Audrey Haynes & Beverly Haynes were on parade and ready to get on with the job - some even arrived at 9am!

Many thanks to Cliff and Chris Cushion, and Mike Kirby for keeping us supplied with skips, and of course Granville Yaxley who keeps our grass in good condition.

Finally I would like to thank Margaret & the Town Council for their help and continued support

Bothered by sagging facial or neck skin? You have many options at Coltishall Clinic

Your face provides the world with a lasting impression of who you are and how you feel. But, it does not have to tell your age. In today’s fast-paced, competitive society, looks are more important than ever. The unfortunate truth is that there are social and economic benefits associated with good looks. For many of our patient’s the overly tight ‘wind-tunnel’ look following a facelift is unacceptable. They desire a more natural looking facial rejuvenation and lift.

Why an awake face lift? Many cosmetic surgery patients are telling their surgeons that they don't want to go under general anaesthesia. Being under general anaesthesia is fraught with risks and prolonged bruising and recovery period.

How do you perform face and neck lifts at the Coltishall Clinic? With our technique, the operation is performed under local anaesthesia with an awake patient. A special solution of saline (salt-water), epinephrine, and lidocaine is injected. Saline helps to separate the tissues, making the dissection less traumatic for the face and neck. Epinephrine causes the tiny blood vessels in the area to constrict, minimising bleeding and bruising. Lidocaine numbs the area to provide pain control and this lasts for 12-18 hours afterwards-reducing the need for painkillers.

What types of face and neck lift do you offer at the Coltishall Clinic? Apart from a full range of non-surgical treatments we offer a variety of surgical options as follows...

• One stitch facelift - this is our minimally invasive facelift. It is suitable for younger patients or for those who do not want a full face or neck lift but desire a subtle result at low cost.

• Thread lift - this is also a minimally invasive procedure and suitable for those patients who want to avoid the knife on their face.

• Laser face lift - this is an excellent option when the main consideration is excess fat in chin and jowls. Laser can melt these and also heats the surrounding tissue.

• Full face and neck lift - Pre medication is recommended to relax the patient. One side is operated at a time. A small amount of skin in front of and below the ear is removed. The skin is lifted, underlying layer is tightened and finally the skin is repositioned and closed with fine sutures.

• Neck lift only - this can be performed through a tiny 1 inch incision in the neck crease. This is suitable for patients with neck bands. Men with turkey neck in particular may be interested in neck only lift where it can be combined with removal of excess skin.

How will I look after surgery? The change following your surgery can be dramatic. The use of small instruments and fluid to separate the skin from deeper tissue results in a bloodless procedure. There may be minor bruising or swelling for 1-2 days. You may elect to return to work in 2-5 days or wait till your stitches are removed in 7 days. The days of prolonged swelling and bruising and having to hide away for weeks are long gone. Our patients do not generally get any significant bruising.

What are the benefits of Coltishall clinic face-lift procedure? Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS Medical Director at the Coltishall clinic has had advanced training in face and neck lifts in the USA and has adapted best practice and technological innovations. As the procedure is performed in the clinic purely under local anesthesia and not in a hospital, it offers the following advantages: • A natural look • Quick recovery • Minimal complication risk • Minimal scars • No hair loss • Less cost • Less risk of infection

With so many face and neck lift options on offer, along with a whole host of cutting edge non-surgical options, we are sure to have a solution to offer you. So why not give us a call on 0800 0430737 or log on to the website at www.coltishallclinic.co.uk

Fears Royal Mail privatisation will harm North Norfolk's postal service

It has been announced that the government is pressing with plans to sell-off Royal Mail in the coming weeks, despite widespread opposition from North Norfolk residents.

North Norfolk Labour Party has been campaigning against the sale of another "national treasure" through street stalls across the constituency over the past few months. Nearly 2,000 people have opposed the plans, and residents have been particularly concerned about the effects privatisation may have on local communities.

It is expected that the company will be floated on the stock exchange shortly.

Denise Burke, Labour's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said "The people of North Norfolk, much like the rest of the country, have serious concerns about what the government is doing with Royal Mail. This is a company that does make a profit - it makes a huge profit and so there is no reason why they should want to sell it off other than for the sake political ideology.

The result of any such sale could put at risk the daily delivery, jobs, and the universal service we all get.

We want to see villages like Hempstead, Happisburgh and Hindringham all get the same service that everyone else receives, and residents fear that this will not happen with a private company.

There is an assumption that companies benefit from privatisation, but history tells us differently, and it is a real shame Norfolk's MPs North Walsham Times 432 October 5th 2013

cannot see that."

North Norfolk Labour Party will continue to protest the move at street stalls and planned activities over the next month. Those unable to attend the street stalls can sign the petition against the move at www.norfolklabour.co.uk.

1917 Cromer lifeboat rescue to feature in RNLI’s national WW1 exhibition

The Cromer RNLI lifeboat rescue of the Pyrin and Fernebo, which saw 33 people saved from the sea on 9 January 1917, is to feature in an RNLI national touring exhibition commemorating the centenary of World War One (WW1). The charity’s exhibition, funded by Arts Council England, is called Hope in the Great War, and will honour the courage and bravery of the lifeboat crew who risked their lives to save others during WW1.

lifesaving chain and a second launch of the lifeboat in worsening conditions is locally renowned, and will now feature in the exhibition alongside five other RNLI lifeboat services that took place in communities across the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. Opening in February 2014 at the Henry Blogg Museum in Norfolk, Hope in the Great War will start a 4 year tour around RNLI museums, lifeboat stations and other museums. Now the RNLI is asking the local community in Cromer for family memories, photographs and artefacts connected to the RNLI lifeboat rescue of the Pyrin and Fernebo. The most relevant items may be selected to feature within the exhibition allowing the fullest story of the rescue to be told nationally.

Becky Fletcher, RNLI Heritage Project Co-ordinator explains ‘The outstanding efforts by Cromer’s RNLI volunteers to save lives in WW1 will now be Cromer RNLI lifeboat Louisa Heartwell on its carriage. given a national voice. Although Credit RNLI many details are already known about the Pyrin and Fernebo rescues, finding Cromer’s lifesaving story of 40 men launching personal memories and connections would the lifeboat, the formation of a human undoubtedly be of further inspiration. ‘We’re involving the community in other ways too – locally, the RNLI is teaming up with members of the 1st Cromer Sea Scouts to create a piece of artwork for the tour. They are creating a stained glass interactive game which will feature within the exhibition.’

Cromer Sea Scouts says ‘The Pyrin and Fernebo rescue story for us is a very proud moment in Cromer’s history. We feel immensely privileged to be involved in such an important project and by helping to share the Cromer rescue with the rest of the nation. Our Scouts, Cubs and Beavers are fascinated with the story of the rescue, particularly when comparing technology in our modern times and the lack of technology and kit they had nearly 100 years ago, but the RNLI volunteers still managed to save lives because of the crew’s sheer bravery.

‘We are thrilled with the youngsters’ enthusiasm for this project and we are sure it is something they will never forget. Hopefully they will continue to share the story and experience of this project with their children in years to come.’

To pass on any family memories, anecdotes, photos or letters, please email Rebecca_Fletcher@rnli.org.uk or call the RNLI Henry Blogg Museum on 01263 511294.

Paston Sixth Form College Awards Evening

Kevin Grieve welcomed over 400 students and their parents to a packed St Nicholas Church on the evening of Thursday 12 September. He told the audience “once again students had achieved some outstanding results and North Walsham and the whole North Norfolk community should be very proud of the student performance in 2013”.

He was particularly pleased with a 98% A level pass rate and a 100% pass rate on BTEC courses. The results at A level included an A*-B pass rate of 49% and an A*-C rate of 73%. “It is not surprising that over 250 students are going to University after A level and BTEC courses, with over 20% going on to top Russell Group Universities. All over the country Universities will be receiving some talented people from Norfolk” said the Principal.

In his address Kevin Grieve thanked all the teaching, support staff, students and parents for their hard work over the last two years. He also spoke about student creativity in education. He explained that students were not only hard working but also very creative in the way they approached their studies. This creativity was also seen in all aspects of student participation in enrichment activities such as sport, drama, art and their voluntary and charity work.

Daniel Evans, guest speaker at the event and an ex Paston student, spoke about the need for creativity in education. Daniel spoke about creativity in his own subject area of Geography and how it helped him with his studies and gap year in Alaska.

Dear Margaret,

Can I use your columns to put Ross Wordie straight? He seems to be just a trifle misled over the North Norfolk Railway's relationship with the Norfolk Orbital Railway (Melton Constable Trust).

They don't have one. Far from being hand in glove, or the same organisation, the North Norfolk Railway, while agreeing that a railway back to the site of the original station in Holt, and then further to Melton Constable and beyond, would be a good thing, thinks that the project is not feasible or achievable in a reasonable time, and for that reason, appeals to members of the M&GNJRS (the charity which supports the North Norfolk Railway) to spend their money on the NNR's current projects, which do not include any extensions. I refer you to page 3 of the current (Autumn 2013) Joint Line, the members' magazine freely available in the station shop at Sheringham. The chairman of the M&GNJRS and the chairman of the North Norfolk Railway make the position quite clear. To take Ross' further points: Sheringham is not unique as a steam town. There are now literally hundreds of steam railways in the UK. Many of them are smaller than the NNR, quite a few are larger, and the towns associated with them benefit from railway tourism in the same way Sheringham does. Take a look at any issue of the national magazine Steam Railway and all will become clear.

Station Road is hardly free access to the town. In summer, there are so many pedestrians all over the road that any driver with any sense realises that Sheringham already has a problem with traffic congestion and uses Church Street, over the bridge provided for that very purpose by the late great Midland & Great Northern Railway. This avoids the busy Station Road and gives easy access to the old Budgen's car park in Morris St. The Church Street bridge is adequate - even Sanders' big six wheeler buses have no problems with it - and were it not, it could be widened. This is the second bridge on the site (the abutments of the old bridge are visible on Platform 1), so it's been done before. What man has done, man can do. By far the greater part of the parking in Sheringham is in any case in the old station yard on the landward side of the railway. It is not necessary to cross the railway to get to this parking, any more than it will be to get to Tesco, so any closing of level crossing gates would not affect it. Even if traffic were to pile up for hours, it would be easy to make an unblockable entrance to the car park. How Beeston Road comes into it I don't see, unless Ross lives there and is worried about a rat run.

The present train service is one train an hour. No train operating company so far has expressed a desire to increase the service, and if trains ran to Holt they would probably be at the same frequency. It has to be considered that the Norwich line as far as North Walsham is and always has been a single line with limited passing places - Cromer, Sheringham and Weybourne, should the line run through to Holt - which obviously influences the frequency at which trains can be run. No more than one train is ever permitted on a single line section. This means that the level crossing gates would only have to be shut for a few minutes while the infrequent trains passed over Station Road - not while they were in the station. Unless the Shannocks of the 1960s were running the British Railways Board, they had absolutely no say in the closing of the line (public opinion at the time was against it), nor in the abandonment of the M&GN station and the level crossing. British Railways decided all this, and the reason they built the glorified bus stop which is now the Network Rail terminus was that they refused to continue to pay for the upkeep and maintenance of the level crossing and the station buildings and platforms. Mere meanness, not consideration for Shannocks. As to Tesco - I regret to say this, but it's not trains or level crossing gates which will be the downfall of independent shops. Indeed, more trains and more visitors, who are not intent on doing their weekly shop but are looking for something more individual, can only help the town. Tesco is convenient and has all one needs, if not all one wants, and can, as its founder said, pile it high and sell it cheap(ish). Tesco campaigns so hard to get into towns because it knows that once it's there, people will use it. Because it's easy.

'They built a track over it'? Sorry, that track was there before the Green. Otterndorf Green was part of the M&GN and it was always understood that the line would run through there if it was reinstated. It did not belong to the town then, and probably not now - it's either British Railways Residuals or the NNR - and whatever happens to the Railway, there will be as much of it available to the public as there is now. Quite how many people want to sit at a busy cross roads for fun I don't know. So be grateful to the Railway for there being any green space there at all. If there had not been a railway that would have been concrete for many years. Oh, and you wouldn't have the parking by the station either.

Does Ross realise what planning permission was needed, what enquiries, what consultations, the Railway went through before they could re-lay that short section of track over Station Road? It took years just for the permissions to replace something which had been there before. Not just 'irresponsible councillors' (probably concerned to gain the advantages for the town that through excursions could and have given), but Network Rail, E-on... the list goes on.

If - and, as I pointed out at the beginning, the NNR and the Melton Constable Trust are not in agreement - a scheduled train service was ever to run, the gates would take up no more room than they do now, and there would still be years of discussion, planning enquiries and, more important, the question of signalling. This is one of the most important aspects of railway safety, and, while both Network Rail and the North Norfolk Railway have stringent signalling requirements, their systems are not compatible. All this would have to be worked out. At present the level crossing is legally a tramway crossing and is signalled as such, but a regular service would require the two systems to be seamlessly joined.

Personally I am in agreement with the aims of the Melton Constable Trust. The cross country railway links should never have been closed, and should be reinstated instead of the expensive and useless HS2. But I am also in agreement with the viewpoint of the NNR. The Norfolk Orbital Railway would be very useful, but in the absence of any sense and funding from central government, it's not going to happen. Even just getting to Holt proper from the current Holt station at High Kelling would involve an expensive road crossing near Kelling Hospital (it would have to be a bridge), and the fact that the old track bed is now the Holt bypass, with minimal space alongside for a railway line.

Rant over! But it's only fair to give space to the facts... Best regards, R M King, Cromer 18

Wet Dog Takes a Dive!

Phil Weston, owner of Wet Dog in Cromer, will soon be pushing himself well out of his comfort zone to help raise money for the much needed Cromer Skate Park when he completes a Skydive!!

Having spent many years coaching Youth Football, Phil is very keen on seeing both boys and girls of all ages and abilities follow their passions and desires and pursue their hobbies in the best surroundings with the best facilities and most of all with friends and other like-minded people.

"Let’s face it," says Phil, "we all know kids tend to get a rough deal in general these days. They can’t gather in groups, wear what they want or enjoy their favourite pastime without getting some stick from someone. This Skate Park is a must not just for the guys who want to use it, but Cromer as well – it will create a great place for people to meet, and to practise their sport, whether it is Boarding, Scooter or BMX, but it will also create another great ‘draw’ for the town – look at the success of the Mundesley and Sheringham Parks."

Join the Age of Enlightenment in Trunch

A season of top-quality orchestral concerts in North Norfolk will come to an end in Trunch on 26 October with a performance celebrating the tercentenary of the death of Italian composer Arcangelo Corelli - the last of three dates performed by three of the country’s most highly-regarded touring orchestras.

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) teamed up for the fourth year with Orchestras Live (a national music charity that brings orchestral music to thousands of people in under-served areas across England) to present a series of world-class concerts across the District. In May the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, one of the finest chamber orchestras in existence, performed at St. Catherine’s Church, Ludham, in July Britten Sinfonia, a highly celebrated and pioneering ensemble delighted their audience at The Theatre in the Woods, Holt, while the Orchestra of the Age of

Enlightenment, a truly unique group of visionary musicians who will be celebrating the tercentenary of Corelli’s death at 7.30 pm in St. Botolph’s Church, Trunch, on 26 October.

COAST 2013 - “Inspired by Film” Cromer & Sheringham Art and Literary Festival returns for the fourth year with over 50 events and exhibitions running from Friday 25 October to Sunday 3 November, half term week.

Brochures are available throughout the town listing over 50 events and exhibitions throughout Cromer and Sheringham, including writers, Bollywood dancers, crafts, African drummers, painters, film producers, glass makers, poets, musicians, actors, and youth drama workshops.

Norman Lamb welcomes free school meals for infants in England

“Inspired By Film” is the theme, so there will be screenings of Coast related films from around the world. BBC Voices are running a film production workshop in Cromer on Thursday 31 October, 10am – 4pm at the Henry Blogg Museum, The Rocket House for adults and unaccompanied young people over 16 years entirely free of charge.

You can also have your say to the camera on your favourite topic in the Green Screen project in Sheringham and at the Little Theatre on Tuesday 29 October there will be a whole day of incredible films with a documentary masterclass by Chris Cox, legendary film maker, followed by the Coast 13 Awards ceremony.

A Short Film Competition is open for everybody, with a chance to win a coveted Blue Balloon "Academy" Film Competition Award.

COAST 13 opens on Friday 25 October on Cromer Pier with the comedy string quartet “Bowjangles” show “On The Box” lampooning every TV programme you have ever loved or hated.

The evening includes the final screening of “The Blue Balloon”, the locally shot Cinema Quiz. A prize for the greatest number of famous movies, stars and film references you can spot.

Tickets from the Pavilion Theatre Box Office. www.cromer-pier.com/

COAST 13 is supported by many local businesses, North Norfolk District Council, Cromer Town Council and lots of keen volunteers.

Details of all events at: www.casaf.co.uk

From September 2014 all infant school pupils including 26,162 in Norfolk will benefit from a free hot and healthy meal at lunchtime.

Last month Liberal Democrat Leader and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg announced that every child in infant school in England will receive a free school lunch.

The Coalition will fund schools in England to provide free meals for all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 in a measure that will save families £400 a year per child while helping to raise school standards and cut the attainment gap.

PROFESSIONAL BUILDERS, BUILDING YOUR FUTURE

Universal free school meals for primary school pupils were a key recommendation in a recent review of school food produced independently for the Department for Education. The review found that, in pilots where all children had been given a free school dinner, students were academically months ahead of their peers elsewhere and more likely to eat vegetables at lunchtime.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said “My ambition is that every primary school pupil should be able to sit down to a hot, healthy lunch with their classmates every day. We will start with infant school pupils because teaching healthy habits young, and boosting attainment early, will bring the biggest benefits.”

At the same time, the Coalition will extend free school meals to disadvantaged students in further education and sixth form colleges. Free school meals are currently available only for eligible students at school sixth forms.

Commenting Norman Lamb said “Millions of parents across the country are feeling the squeeze. During the course of a year, the average family spends £400 on lunch for each child. We are determined to ease the financial burden for these families and give every child the chance in life that they deserve, building a stronger economy and a fairer society.” North Walsham Times 432 October 5th 2013

Waitrose North Walsham joins national campaign to help young unemployed into work

Waitrose offers free skills training to help tackle youth unemployment in North Walsham as part of a nationwide initiative by the entire food and grocery industry.

Youngsters from in and around North Walsham had the opportunity to gain the skills they need to get into work when they visited Waitrose North Walsham as part of a nationwide campaign to tackle youth unemployment in September. Following the success of a pilot project in 2012, the entire food and grocery industry has launched Feeding Britain’s Future – Skills for Work Month 2013. Last year 70 businesses participated, in 700 locations, including Waitrose branches in the North East. The campaign provided 10,000 skills training opportunities with 98% of participants saying they felt more confident applying for a job, and over half having secured a job since they took part in the campaign’s workshops. Youngsters from North Walsham took part in workshops with the Waitrose Personnel Managers last month covering topics including how to complete job applications, mock interview practice and CV writing. They were also given the opportunity to find out about career opportunities in the retail industry and at the end of the workshop were given a certificate to confirm their attendance. Feeding Britain’s Future, led by industry research body IGD with the

Stylish New Look for Sheringham Little Theatre

Visitors to the Sheringham Little Theatre will soon discover the coastal venue has been given a completely new box office and café area. Work is currently underway to refurbish the foyer and visitor areas of the popular theatre, with a grand opening planned for Saturday, 30 November.

Debbie Thompson, director of the Little Theatre, said the refurbishment would make access to the box office and café much easier and would allow more people to enjoy the space.

support of Jobcentre Plus, is the first initiative of its kind, giving young people access to farms, factories and stores, and firsthand knowledge of the skills needed for a career in the food industry or elsewhere. Ashley Broad, Branch Manager at Waitrose North Walsham said "Waitrose is committed to helping young people to get into work, particularly during these difficult economic times. Two fifths of our workforce is under 25* and young people are vital to the success of our business. The team here at Waitrose North Walsham are really passionate about working with young people to help them develop their understanding of the food industry and inspire them in their endeavours to get into the workplace." Joanne Denney-Finch, chief executive, IGD, said “The UK food and grocery industry employs 3.7 million people - making us Britain’s biggest private sector employer. With that scale comes responsibility we have a vital role to play in tackling youth unemployment by sharing our advice and experience. Feeding Britain’s Future is bringing the industry together to share the rules of the game with young people. We need your help to provide unemployed 16-24 year-olds with the skills and confidence to make the most of job opportunities.”

Mothers' Union

Zoe Mitchell spoke at our September meeting about the six months volunteering that she undertook in Cape Town as part of her gap year before going to University. She was mainly involved with children's ministry within a local church and found the experience so rewarding that, if the opportunity arose, would like to return.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 8 October at 2.30pm in the St. Nicholas Room when Sue Gibbons will speak about religion within broadcasting. Visitors and new members will be very welcome. For more information please contact Ann Herd on 402705.

“We were very lucky to receive a grant of £66,000 from the Norfolk County Council Community Construction Fund to improve the box office and café bar. This will see us move the box office and make it far more open and welcoming,” she said.

“At the same time we are moving the bar into the centre of the café, improving the flow for customers and to make it more efficient in terms of how the food is served.”

The refurbishment will allow up to 62 people to be seated and will create more cohesion between the theatre itself and the interval area.

It is the second phase of a major renovation programme at the Little Theatre. The first stage saw the refurbishment of the exterior of the building while the third phase – expected to take place in 2014 – will see the creation of a new education and youth space.

“We are really looking forward to the new look café and box office,” she said. “Not only will the changes enhance the whole experience for theatre-goers but they will also be of great benefit to our fantastic army of volunteers who run the café for us.

“We will be holding a grand opening from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, 30 November and hope members of the public will come along to see the new areas for themselves and to meet members of our pantomime cast.”

Vodafone Signal Loss Again

Norman Lamb has written to the Chief Executive of Vodafone, Guy Lawrence, to challenge Vodafone over its continued signal problems on the North Norfolk Coast. The local MP was made aware of the problems after two constituents contacted him to say they had been without signal for three days. In his letter, Norman Lamb commented that “For there to have been yet another significant loss of service for Vodafone customers after the disruption that has already occurred recently is incredibly frustrating for customers. I also do not think it is acceptable. I would be grateful in the first instance if you could confirm what steps are being taken to rectify the problem as a matter of urgency. I would also be grateful if you could arrange for a senior representative of Vodafone UK to meet with me in North Norfolk to discuss steps that can be taken to improve the resilience of your network to ensure that this does not happen again”. Norman Lamb met with representatives of the Countryside Alliance, who are running a “Sick of No Signal” campaign in rural areas to urge networks to improve their signal in the countryside. Those living in the North Walsham East County electoral division (KX4 Dilham, LF1 Happisburgh, LG4 Walcott, LL4 Honing, MC1 North Walsham East, MC2 North Walsham North, NP4 Witton) who are not yet registered to vote or who have recently moved need to send in their application to be added to the register at their current address as soon as possible. To be eligible to vote at these elections the last date for receiving applications is Wednesday 9 October. The deadline for applying for a postal vote or amending or cancelling an existing one is 5pm on 9 October. Proxy applications can be accepted up to 5pm on Wednesday 16 October.

St Nicholas Church Fete Success North Walsham SNAP

Once again the Church Fete on 7 September proved a huge success. As always it was the gallant helpers that got the show up and running, working both Friday and Saturday. It wouldn’t have happened without those who donated all the various items for sale - books, bric-a brac, bling, plants, electrical, handmade cards, CDs, DVDs, crafts, bottles, cakes, toys etc etc. and of course all the businesses in the town who supported the raffle including the free loan of a large van from Trevor Charles and a Skip from Carl Bird. The weather on the day was perfect and attracted the crowds who snapped up a bargain and had a delicious bacon bap with a cup of tea. Their support gave us over £2400 – verified by our in-house accounting team. From the Fete Committee – A big thank you to everyone who helped set up, to those who donated items and to those who came on the day to make a purchase.

THE JETTY CAFE, CROMER, FEATURED IN LIST OF TOP 50 ‘MUST EAT’ EXPERIENCES

The Jetty Cafe, on Cromer High Street, has been included in a new Top 50 ‘Must Eat’ list compiled by some of Britain’s most famous foodies.

The Kenwood Food Lovers Bucket List has been compiled for Kenwood, the UK’s leading kitchen appliance brand, by a panel of six esteemed culinary experts including TV chef Simon Rimmer, writer and editor of Waitrose Kitchen magazine William Sitwell and restaurant critic Giles Coren. It covers the essential food experiences that Brits should have in a lifetime; including ingredients to try, recipes to make at home, UK restaurants to visit and culinary adventures around the world.

Enjoying fresh seafood by the sea features in the top 50 food experiences and The Jetty Cafe has been named as one of the best places in the UK to indulge. Well known for its award-winning fresh Cromer crab salad, The Jetty Cafe is loved by locals and visitors alike.

Louise Gillespie, who owns and runs The Jetty Cafe, is delighted to have made it into the top 50 list, commenting: “Many visitors come to Cromer to eat delicious crab and the experience of eating crab sandwiches and salads is made more special with the smell of salt in the air and the sun shining! We are thrilled that The Jetty Café and Cromer have been mentioned in the list and would like to take the opportunity to thank our supplier Davies Fish Shop of Cromer for such wonderful local produce.” Simon Rimmer explains, “We’ve pulled together what we believe to be the ultimate, unmissable gastronomic experiences for food-loving Brits.

Sir William Paston Sixth Form Scholars 2013

In 2006 the Trustees of the Paston Foundation created a scholarship scheme to mark our 400th birthday bearing the name of our founder, Sir William Paston.

The scholarships worth £500, are awarded to gifted and talented students who achieve a minimum of 3A* and 6 A grades at GCSE who have come to Paston Sixth Form College to study A levels and BTEC courses as a preliminary to going to a top university. In 2013, 42 scholarships have been awarded. The scholars will meet the Trustees of the Paston Foundation at a lunch in October.

The scholars are Yasmin Atthill, Becky Ali, Marie Andrews, Hannah Butterfield, Melissa Bowling, Sophie Crook, Martha Crass, Sophie Coles, Georgie De La Borda, Christian Green, Beth Gook, Millie Goslyn-Jones, Nicholas Hewetson, Eleanor Hepburn, Callum Hamilton-Emery, Molly Harris, Jenna Hatch, Jasper Haywood, Jenny Hull, Nathan Jones, Ross Knapman, Molly Kerkham, Chloe Lee, Georgina Lester, Benjamin McCarthy, Laurina Mellows, Emily McLaren, Charlie Randall, Elise Page, Emily Rowland, Ellie Rix, Issy Snell, Catherine Setchfield, Anna Szulfer, Andrew Stringer, Jack Southgate, Laura Tuddenham, Harry Twining, Sophie Wilkinson, Sam Webb, Abbie Walters, Alice Wreford.

From the simple pleasures of a fresh crab sandwich eaten on the beach, to soaking up the spice markets of Marrakech, there’s something on there for everyone. We hope it inspires foodies to get out and try new things, or even create their own Food Bucket Lists to munch their way through.”

And it follows new research from Kenwood that shows how much Brits have become obsessed with food - with six in ten people from the East (61%) saying they would choose a great food experience over any other ‘life’ experiences, including pampering, animal safaris or extreme sports like sky diving.

Mark Swift, Director of Marketing for Kenwood, says: “It’s amazing to see what an effect food has on our lives. It’s such a fundamental part of British culture. We’ve pulled together the Food Lovers Bucket List to help people experience the very best that food has to offer both here and abroad, and The Jetty Cafe has a very well deserved mention on the list.” The Kenwood Food Lovers Bucket List can be viewed in full at www.kenwoodworld.com/uk.

North Walsham Table Tennis STAR PAVING SERVICES

NWSCA Into Both K.O Cup Quarter Finals

An exciting tie in the first round of the Star Paving Services North Norfolk Table Tennis League Knockout Doubles Cup was always guaranteed when NWSCA were drawn against Outlaws. The team of Andy Beane, John Batchford and Tom Baldock-Yaxley represented the hosts at Antingham Village Hall with the trio of John Hancock, Colin Humphries and Steve Patterson lining up for Outlaws. Beane and Baldock-Yaxley ran into an early 9-3 lead in the first set of the opener, before Hancock and Patterson won the next eight points and then the next two sets to win in straight. A turning point in the next battle between Batchford and Baldock-Yaxley and Humphries and Patterson came with the Outlaws poised to take a two sets lead at 10-9 in the second when Baldock-Yaxley was on the right end of a lucky edge to save the set point. The NWSCA duo won the set 13-11 and took the next two to level the tie at 1-1. Beane and Batchford beat Hancock and Humphries 11-9, 9-11, 5-11, 11-9, 11-9 before a straight sets win from Hancock and Humphries again levelled the tie. Beane and Batchford edged out Hancock and Humphries 13-11 in the fourth and then Batchford and Baldock-Yaxley closed out their straight sets win over Humphries and Patterson 15-13 in the third to see NWSCA into a 4-2 lead. The next two battles were also won in straight as Hancock and Humphries kept Outlaws alive in the tie before Beane and Batchford defeated Hancock and Patterson to close out NWSCA’s hard fought 5-3 win.

Norfolk Champion Richard Porritt made his return to the League and took a set from Hubert Cheng but was unable to make an impression against current North Norfolk Champion Robin Thaxter. Four of the battles went to four sets with Thaxter edging out Paul Price 15-13 in the fourth.

NWSCD’s Mary Sawyer, Joe Kirkup and Philip Stone hosted Cromer Crosscourt’s Derek Sidaway, Wren Thatcher and John Welsh at North Walsham Sports Centre. Sidaway and Welsh failed to capitalise a set point chance in the first set and an early lead in the deciding set as Sawyer and Stone won a tight opener 14-12, 7-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-6. The pairing of Sidaway and Welsh also went the distance later in the tie with Kirkup and Stone winning in five and with a trio of straight sets wins going to the hosts in straight, NWSCD won 5-0.

The following week saw NWSCA meet NWSCD in the first round of the Singles Cup. Stone came back from 5-9 down to edge out Beane 13-11 in the fifth. Next, Sawyer recovered strongly in each set but to no avail as Baldock-Yaxley won in straight. Good play from Kirkup from two sets down saw him with four chances to take Batchford the distance, but the NWSCA player closed out the win in four on his second chance. A trio of wins in straight concluded NWSCA’s 5-1 win. Gresham’s School A won their singles tie 5-0 against NWSCB for whom former North
