SPECIAL OLYMPICS TASTER DAY HAILED AS GREAT SUCCESS!
Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent
Over 150 budding athletes with learning disabilities and volunteer sports coaches from right across Norfolk descended on the UEA Sportspark recently to find out what Special Olympics has to offer.
As well as taster sessions in cricket, tennis, golf, athletics and boccia, those attending received a free lunch courtesy of Sportspark catering and local supermarkets and went home with a Special Olympics Norfolk T-shirt to remember the day by. Organised by Special Olympics Norfolk in conjunction with Active Norfolk, the day was hailed an outstanding success by Bob Billson, National Development Manager at Special Olympics Great Britain, who attended the one day event at the Sportspark.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS TASTER DAY Council playgrounds HAILED AS GREAT SUCCESS! set for improvement Continued from front cover...
Special Olympics Norfolk chairman Richard Sanders commented “Athletes came from as far afield as Kings Lynn and Great Yarmouth and everyone enjoyed a fantastic day of activity, trying out sports and talking to coaches about training”.
“A number of volunteers, including representatives from UEA, Swardeston Cricket Club, Bawburgh Driving Range, Norfolk Cricket Board, Easton Family Golf Centre, Sewell Park Centre Boccia Club, Easton College Disability Tennis hub, Bungay Cycle School and Norfolk Snowsports Club were present to offer the athletes a chance to see the sports in action, try their hand, and provide information where requested.
“The support of Waitrose and their team of volunteers also played a big part in making the day an overwhelming success. This event will only enhance the profile of Special Olympics in the county, and helps those who provide care to see the scope for sport to play a significant role in personal development, and social inclusion.
“Wherever a mainstream club or leisure facility works with us, there is the opportunity for an athlete who shows promise, to train with others who have ability.
“On behalf of Special Olympics Norfolk I would like to thank all of the volunteers and coaches who donated their time and of course all of the athletes who left at the end of the day with a big smile on their faces,” added Richard.

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Cabinet is set to approve plans to spend up to £100,000 to improve children’s playgrounds in the district.
Following a thorough review of the 29 council-owned playgrounds in North Norfolk, a report set to be approved by the council’s Cabinet on 4 November recommends that up to £100,000 be spent on replacing and improving equipment at four sites, in North Walsham, Sheringham and Cromer.
Rhodri Oliver, NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Assets said “This is really good news for the communities concerned. The funds were included in this year’s budget and following a thorough assessment and the involvement of local families we have identified four potential sites for improvement. Three will go ahead very soon, in Cromer and North Walsham, while we are working with local residents to finalise ‘first phase’ improvements and then further plans for the fourth, at Cromer Road, Sheringham.”
John Lee, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said “Children’s playgrounds are important for local communities. They are places not just where children can play and enjoy being with friends, but where parents can also meet, and they help to generate a real community spirit. This council wants to help local communities to help themselves, and by talking to and working with local people to improve their children’s play facilities this is exactly what we are doing here.”
The playgrounds set to benefit from the funding are: Cromer – Fernsfield (replacing unsafe equipment that had already been removed - £8,000) and The Meadow (replacing equipment that had been removed in 2012 - £32,000); North Walsham – Acorn Road (equipment for younger children - £13,000); Sheringham – Cromer Road (working with Sheringham Playpark Revamp Appeal - £20,000 with the possibility of contributing up to a further £22,000 towards their scheme). Improved signage will also be provided for 20 other sites across the district.
Girl Guiding
Organisers would like to thank everybody who supported the Brownies jumble sale. A total of £97 was raised which will be well spent by the Brownie when they buy the items to send in their shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.
The next event is a Christmas Fayre on 23 November 1pm to 3 pm at the Guide HQ Aylsham Road, North Walsham. This will be to raise funds to support members to attend events which would otherwise be too expensive for the family to afford - next year is the 100th birthday of the Brownies so there will be loads of events for the girls to attend.

It’s just a few weeks until Christmas and we are gearing up for a very busy few weeks with our party dates throughout December a fast booking Christmas Day Luncheon and New Years Eve Dinner bookings already being taken.

Our Sunday Family Roasts are also proving very popular and with a choice of roast meats and a great selection of vegetables it is no wonder that we are seeing a lot of repeat bookings. We also invite visitors to the White Horse for breakfast served each day from 8am, its a great way to start your day particularly at weekends when you can perhaps arrange to meet with friends or sit and enjoy that extra cup of coffee while reading the weekend papers, before setting off for a brisk walk. Don’t forget to book your table if you are planning to visit us over the Christmas and New Year period.

AYLSHAM CITTASLOW COMMUNITY EVENTS -
Helping Aylsham get together! SWITCH ON TO CHRISTMAS AS ... AYLSHAM LIGHTS UP! FRIDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2013 6PM warm there will be a wide variety of food Lantern procession leaves St Michaels School at 5.45pm on offer to tempt you. Lights switch on in the Market Place at 6pm. Activities in the parish
The lights switch on and late night opening is always a popular family event in Aylsham. Don’t miss the arrival of Father Christmas and the start of the town’s festive season- put the date in your diary now!
Children from Aylsham schools will be busy making lanterns in preparation for our festive evening procession! Whether you have a lantern or not, everyone is welcome to join in.
The procession will leave St Michael’s school at 5.45pm and move into the Market Place to await the lights switch on at 6pm. Father Christmas will of course be there and will be assisted by an Aylsham VIP to turn on the lights and illuminate the town!
The church bells will ring out and the Town Band and The Salvation Army Band will provide a selection of seasonal music and carols during the evening.
Father Christmas will be back again in his special grotto at Eclipse Hair Salon. For all those children who have been very good this year – Father Christmas will be anxious to hear what present you would like to find under the tree on Christmas morning – so don’t forget to pop in and see him! There will be fairground rides, entertainments and workshops in the Town Hall - plenty to keep the youngsters happy for the whole evening.
For Mums and Dads- why not take advantage of the late night opening? Visit the wide variety of shops in the town and make a relaxed start to Christmas shopping. Extra craft stalls will be there to offer that special ‘something’ for that hard -to -please relative!
Aylsham has a number of wonderful pubs, restaurants and cafes and there will be additional food stalls on the night. Whether you fancy a meal out or just a hot drink to keep
STEAM STRAIGHT TO SANTA
Once again, Santa Claus is setting up his Enchanted Grotto at Weybourne Station. Which, of course, means that the best way to meet him is to take a Poppy Line Santa Special steam train from Sheringham direct to the Grotto.
Santa Specials will be running on Sunday 1 December, the weekends of 7/8 and 14/15 December, and every day from Saturday 21 December up to and including Christmas Eve.
Advance booking is essential (visit www.nnrailway.co.uk, call 01263 820800 or pop into the office at Sheringham station), so that Santa can arrange an appropriate present for each child aged between one and 14.
On the Santa Specials, there’s a free glass of sherry and a mince pie for the grown-ups, and a soft drink and choccy treat for the children. Each booking has reserved numbered seating in decorated carriages.
Prices for adults and children range from £13.50 to £17 a head, depending on the date and time of travel. Babies up to one year old are £6. And Santa Snack Platters, a mini-feast of sandwiches, pies, cakes and festive fare for four people, can be reserved at just £24 a platter.
This year, the Poppy Line is also running two Christmas ‘North Norfolkman’ lunch trains, on Sundays 1 and 8 December. Leaving Sheringham at 12.40pm, these trains offer a superb three course lunch. Price per head (including travel but not drinks) is £44.50. The trains do not include a visit to Santa, and must be booked separately in advance.
Already the Santa Specials are filling up fast, so you’re advised to book right away to get the date and time you prefer. North Walsham Times 435 November 16th 2013

In the true spirit of Christmas please support the charity stalls and also the stalls from the Farmers Market who regularly come to the town not just at Christmas but throughout the year.
There is an old Scandinavian proverb –‘There is no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing!’ So dig out the wellies, the Christmas jumper from last year ( it’s ok – it will be dark!) and the Santa hat – and join us! Be it rain, snow or ice - come and enjoy the warmth of a traditional –

Youth Hubs are a Hit in North Norfolk
Since July this year, Youth Workers in north Norfolk have been setting up new Youth Hubs in Sheringham, Cromer, Stalham and Mundesley. Funded by the North Norfolk Youth Advisory Board, the Hubs are designed to give young people more opportunities to get involved in their local communities, take part in positive activities, and to provide a safe, welcoming space where they can socialise and access youth services.
The Hubs are exclusively young person led and are attracting young people from all different backgrounds, making them an exciting and dynamic addition to their local communities.
Young people are given the opportunity to design, plan and take the lead in deciding how the Hubs run with the support of professional youth workers. The Cromer youth have had a crab fishing competition, a movie night and are now designing art work for their youth room at Merchant’s Place. Mundesley and Stalham young people are in the early stages of
planning a charity event, and will be raising money for local causes as well as decorating the Hub rooms with their own designs. In Sheringham, young people are given the opportunity to try bush craft skills, carve pumpkins and make smoothies at the newly refurbished Oddfellow’s Hall.
The Hubs run twice a month from the following venues: • Cromer – Merchant’s Place, Wednesdays 4-6pm • Mundesley – Scout Hut, Wednesdays 4-6pm • Sheringham – Oddfellow’s Hall, Thursdays 4:30-6:30pm • Stalham – Sports Centre, Thursday 4-6pm
Youth Workers, Hannah Garrard and Will Mills, are helping young people run their Hubs and are a regular presence in local schools and at other youth groups, building interest and enthusiasm for the projects.
Rock (Buns) & Rolling (Pins) WI
Rock (Buns) & Rolling (Pins) WI is a newly formed branch of the Women's Institute in North Walsham. The group aims to bring women from North Walsham and surrounding areas together to craft, natter, have fun and maybe to have a cocktail or two. The group is open to all ages but aims to appeal to younger women.
Rock (Buns) & Rolling (Pins) has been started by a group of friends with young children, that felt that there was a need for a group in the area where younger women could meet other like-minded women, to share ideas, learn new skills, have a laugh, enjoy a drink and eat cake at least once a month. We are not the stereotypical WI, and it is definitely not just all 'jam and Jerusalem' - in fact 'Jerusalem' is not sung at our meetings. Another feature that distinguishes our group is that we meet in a pub. However, Rock (Buns) & Rolling (Pins) WI is also about preserving and passing on the skills that are traditionally associated with the WI like crocheting, knitting, flower arranging, jam making, sewing, cooking, etc, but we want to add a modern twist and bring the WI to the 21st century and some of our planned activities for next year's meetings include belly dancing and a burlesque night. Also, we plan to start some subgroups for our members such a crafts group and book club in the new year.
“Young people are free to use the Hubs how they wish as a place to drop in and socialise with friends, get advice from professionals, or have more of a say in how their community is run says Hannah Garrard. “It’s been an exciting project to be involved in, and has a real sustainable ethos which will benefit communities and young people’s lives.”
If you or someone you know would like to get involved in one of the Hubs, then you can get in touch via facebook at Facebook/NNHUBS and message Hannah or Will to find out when the next Hub will run, email or call Will Mills, Senior Youth and Community Worker on 07876864281 or williammills@map.uk.net

NORTH WALSHAM & BRADFIELD FLOWER CLUB
There was a large audience of members and visitors in September, at our first meeting after the summer break. Julia Knights is always a huge draw - not just because she is a great flower arranger and florist, but she is so entertaining too. Julia is currently working towards becoming a National Demonstrator which means she will be travelling all over the country and beyond, rather than just the east of England.
More recently on 24 October, Barbara Collins from Peterborough demonstrated Oriental Moments. This was particularly enjoyable, not just because of the unique oriental designs but because she made great use of colourful and unusual leaves from houseplants, which is something often overlooked. Irene, as usual, excelled with her home-made cakes which had been enjoyed earlier whilst ladies socialised and caught up with all the news.
By the time you read this, our Christmas Open

His talk, supplemented by slides, gave an account of a voyage during the late spring along the west coast of Norway, starting at Bergen, the second city in the country. Apart from its importance as a major city it is also a former Hanseatic port.
The voyage continued north eventually to the North Cape. a distance of about 1.200 miles covered in a period of six days. Surprisingly the North Cape is as far east as Istanbul. The next stop was Alesund, a town strongly influenced by Kaiser Wilhem II, who financed its reconstruction in 1904 following a fire.
Our cruise continued to Trondheim, another former Hanseatice port. Trondheim boasts St Olave’s Cathedral, named after a former Viking chief in 995. Given their warlike reputation the idea of a Viking saint may seem a little incongruous, but it does indicate that the Vikings did eventually settle in many of those territories they conquered, including East Anglia. The area has a strong Lutheran faith.
Continuing their tour the trip crosses the Arctic circle, at which time of the year the sun is seen below the horizon, and one experiences almost twenty four hours daylight. The next stop was Boda, a town two thirds destroyed during the war and then to the Lofoten Islands, whose neutrality was violated by the Nazis in 1940.
Several other interesting features emerged from the description of the cruise. Tronso’s Arctic cathedral built in 1965, and Hammerfest, the most northerly city in the world. It is a region which evokes varying reactions; one writer said ‘Thank God for not making me live here’. Thomas Carlyle spoke of ‘grey green granite’.
Local inhabitants are liable to depression, through lack of sunlight, something which most of have experienced but has only recently been acknowledged. Their early explorers discovered that by preserving frozen cod they were able to sustain ships crews during long voyages.
The Club next meets at 10am on 27 November when new members will be cordially welcome. Ted Gadsden

Nicholas Barber visits Millfield
Millfield Primary School in North Walsham has been one of the pilot schools in Norfolk who have learnt Latin through the ‘Classics for All’ teaching program over the last three years. Pupils from the Year 6 group were extremely delighted to receive a visit from Nicholas Barber CBE, who wanted to find out first hand how the children felt being part of the Latin Program. Nicholas Barber was the Chairman of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and is now one of the trustees of Classics for All Charity.
The children shared their views on the project expressing their enthusiasm on how it has helped them in numerous subjects especially in English, history and modern foreign languages. The children explained that by understanding that Latin is the foundation root language for many of our words today they have been able to expand their knowledge in deciphering unknown words and using that knowledge for French and Spanish. When asked what they enjoyed about the lessons children became quite animated telling Mr Barber how they
enjoyed being able to use Latin in drama by using the storyboard scenes from the Minimus Book; the book used to teach the course. They loved the projects set by their teacher, Mrs Price, which encapsulated the theme of the different chapters and were delighted to be able to enter them into an international competition early in the year. This saw three children receive runners up prizes and one child received a winner’s prize.
Mrs Price, a teaching assistant who teaches Latin to the Year 5 and Year 6 groups; explained how all of the children had
Paston Sixth Form College visit to the Norwich Ihsan Mosque and Islamic Centre
progressed, each child showed a good depth of knowledge in all areas of the program. She explained that different to the first year when 10 children had been chosen, last year and this year the children had to write an application letter explaining why they wanted to learn Latin and why they should be chosen. This process worked extremely well and children were picked on the strength of their letter this meant the group was made up with children with different learning abilities. Mrs Price explained that some of the children who were struggling with understanding the concepts of English such as verbs, adjectives etc have come on in leaps and bounds through the program.
Mr Barber thanked Mrs Price for all of her hard work over the last two years and expressed his delight with how well the program was working at Millfield. Mrs Jane Maguire; who was the lead teacher of the program in Norfolk and taught Mrs Price alongside the children in the first year; expressed that because of the nature of the program it could be taught by non classicists and therefore make Latin more accessible to children.
Paston Sixth Form College’s A level Sociology students visited the The Ihsan Mosque at Chapelfield Norwich on Wednesday 23 October as part of a course on Beliefs In Society.
It was a truly enjoyable and enlightening experience for all involved, and the opportunity to step outside the classroom allowed the students to learn about Islam in context through personal experience by engagement with members of the Muslim community in Norwich.
The students were warmly welcomed to the mosque and had the opportunity to raise their questions about women’s roles and sharia law, the answers to which acted as an important counterbalance to the negative media coverage that is often, unfortunately given to Islam.
“It opened my eyes to the Muslim religion, and I was able to find out about people’s experiences and feelings about their beliefs first hand. It helped me understand things from the British Muslim perspective” said Ellie Smith and Emma Painter added “Visiting the mosque gave us the opportunity to hear about Islam from a Muslim’s point of view and learn a lot about the meanings behind the practises and beliefs and benefits of Islam”. Millfield helps LEPRA! The pupils from Millfield Primary in North Walsham have been raising money for the LEPRA charity. The charity raises much needed funds to provide medication and health education that helps to greatly improve the lives of children and adults suffering from Leprosy.
During a special assembly explaining the charity to the children and the help they could provide they were told that they would receive an envelope which was to be taken home with the hope of raising money through family and friends. The children were reminded about the safety aspect of raising donations and not to ask strangers for any money. The children helped to support the charity by raising money either individually, as a family or with friends. Some raised money through a sponsored litter pick at a local park, a sponsored silence and a favourite among many, especially the staff, a cake stall! Mrs Harrison, one of the schools cleaners and MSA, made a magnificent 10 inch cake which needless to say didn’t last long in the staff room and had a big pot of donations next to the empty plate! The children then enjoyed a fun workout event after the fundraising as a thank you for all of their hard work. Millfield last supported LEPRA in 2009 and we helped change the lives of thirty-six people, this year we are hoping to help even more.
The children, parents, staff and friends of Millfield stood wholeheartedly behind the event and raised a whooping £1,677.
Head Teacher Mrs Harazdiuk expressed her thanks by saying “This is a fantastic amount, thank you to everyone who contributed to this total. The children all received a reward of a dance workout session on Tuesday which seemed to be great fun, if not a little tiring!”

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER GARDENING IN THE SHADE
Some people think that to own a shady garden is a matter for sympathy but the famous garden writer, Margery Fish, feels that it is one for envy. She writes that ‘anyone with a garden without shade knows how difficult it is to grow many plants, for you cannot make shade overnight, but it is usually possible to contrive sunny spots in the shadiest gardens.’
She states that ‘If I had to choose between a sunny and a shady garden I would choose the shady one every time, not only for its peace and timelessness but also for the plants that can be grown in it. It seems to me that they are often more interesting and more beautiful than those that like to bask in the sun.’
If the whole garden can be seen at once there is a tendency to pay less attention to its treasures than if they are discovered in shady unexpected places under trees, behind walls and round corners. This was brought home to me on a recent guided walk around some of the historic gardens in the City of London close to St Paul’s Cathedral.
It is hard to imagine a more hostile situation for gardens than in a city, surrounded by high rise buildings which create deep shade and reduce the rain falling on the soil and with
winds that funnel from the River Thames and batter the trees and shrubs. Nevertheless we saw a wide variety of plants that seemed to thrive and produced little areas to calm the city workers and residents and act as refuges for wildlife. As well as the usual plants that enjoy or survive shade such as ivies, ferns, hostas, hellebores and perhaps surprisingly hydrangeas we saw exotic trees such as a Tulip Tree, a Weeping Mulberry, a Persian Ironwood and Ginkgos. Mixed with some variegated shrubs and under planted with bulbs they produce a wonderful garden effect.
The first garden we visited was the Cleary Garden in Queen Victoria Street. This garden is named after Fred Cleary, who, during the 1970s was instrumental in encouraging the planting of trees and the creation of new gardens throughout the square mile. During the Blitz, the house which once stood here was destroyed exposing the cellars. A shoemaker called Joe Brandis decided that he would create a garden from the rubble, collecting mud from the river banks and transporting soil from his own garden in Walthamstow to the site. In the garden is a bed of Yatsuka Tree Peonies sent from Japan as a symbol of goodwill in 2006. The next garden on the route was Whittington Gardens named in honour of one of the City’s best known Lord Mayors who was buried in the nearby church of St Michael Paternoster Royal in 1423. Here Rosemary and Thyme can be found
amongst the dense planting in this garden.
In Monument Street, there is a lovely garden at St Dunstan-in-the –East. The original medieval church was damaged in the Great Fire of London but was rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren in 1697 only to be damaged again in the Blitz. Now the ruins of the walls and windows are beautifully draped with ornamental vines. In the garden grows the pineapple scented Moroccan broom and the Japanese Snowball, Viburnum plicatum.
However the memory that lingers from the walk is not necessarily the plants but also the hard landscaping within the gardens, the paving and gravel, the large planters, generous seating and the statuary. The most impressive statue was one of the ‘Barge Master and Swan Upper’ in a small garden in front of St. James Garlickhythe Church and opposite the Vintner’s Hall in Upper Thames Street which commemorates the Livery Company’s right to share with the Queen the ownership of swans on the river.

Several other cats and kittens have also been chosen and we were particularly delighted that Matilda and Hester, two lovely black and white girls, were among them. As Matilda does not like other cats and Hester is quite shy, they had been overlooked, but both have settled in their new homes and are enjoying home comforts once again.
At this time of the year Stephanie gets lots of calls from people who have been feeding a stray cat, sometimes for several months. As winter approaches, they are concerned because the cat is outside and ring to ask if we can take it into care. Although we do try to give priority to strays we, more often than not, do not have space available. Our pens are only empty for a very short time between cats, just long enough for our fosterers to give them a complete clean and change all bedding etc. We will put the cats on the waiting list and they are taken in when a pen becomes available. Recently, a cat which was on the list, but not at the

top of it, was taken to the vets to be neutered and left there for us to collect. Horatio, the cat in question, now in residence in Hester’s pen, is not very old and probably strayed from his home searching for females because he had not been neutered. He will be held for two weeks, just in case there is an owner out there waiting to claim him, before being put up for adoption. As a consequence, however, the cat that was about to be offered a space, and had been on the list for some time, is still out there waiting for another pen to become available.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
After many years at the Holt Road site, Miramar Vets is moving. From 4th December 2013 we will be at 15 Weybourne Road, Sheringham, NR26 8HF. (opposite Sheringham Golf Club) THE PHONE NUMBER WILL REMAIN THE SAME – 01263 822293

Jamboree on the Air at Roughton Scouts Over the weekend of 19 and 20 October members of the Bittern DX Group were with the Scouts of Roughton 1st Rural HQ to take part in the 56th Jamboree on the Air. This is an annual event in which half a million Scouts and Guides all over the world make contact with each other by means of amateur radio.
divided themselves into two groups to concentrate on each aspect and by end of the weekend there were four successful candidates achieving each badge requirements.
The use of amateur radio means that many Scouts get the opportunity to discover the skills of radio operating techniques and electronics. JOTA is also the only event that offers each individual Scout the opportunity to speak to other Scouts across the world.
In total there was 36 Scouts of various types from Buxton, Gorleston and of course Roughton groups for a weekend of activities at their Windmill headquarters. The boys and girls had plenty to keep them busy with archery, rifle shooting and abseiling etc available along with the amateur radio aspect provided by BDXG members. Antennas were erected from the top of the old Windmill’s tower and using the SES callsign of GB5FRR contacts were made as far afield as Australia!
The object of the weekend however was not just the radio - it was to enable those Scouts interested to gain both their Communications and Electronics badges. BDXG members
Paul Bean M6NEC assists Scouts with their Communications badge operating from GB5FRR Group chairman Stephen Cordner M0HET, ably assisted by Alec Adams G3YOA and Jim Whiteside M0HPJ mainly concentrated on the Electronics badge aspect. In this they taught the candidates soldering techniques and how to recognise various components, as well as the building of available kits plus learning how to measure voltage within the circuit. The other
group comprising principally of Steve Balding G7VRK and Paul Bean M6NEC concentrated themselves on providing the aspects for the Communication badge. This requires learning how to use the radio and make contact via the airwaves, as well as listening to and the logging of callsigns plus understanding basic propagation information.
It was an interesting and successful weekend for BDXG members and all candidates were presented with their badges after lunch on the Sunday before they all left camp. We hope very much to be involved with the Scouts more in 2014 as the members enjoy it as much as the youngsters taking part in the activities at the weekend. Even our member Jim took the chance to abseil down the tower - we can’t have the Scouts having all the fun!!
Involvement with the Scouts and teaching is one of the many aspects of amateur radioDELIVERED undertaken by TO the Bittern GLASS YOURDX DOOR Group, if you would like to know more about the hobby, getting started etc. or just about the group itself. Festive Cheer at Blickling over three weekends! It’s that time again when the Blickling Estate plays host to some traditional Christmas fayre over the first three weekends of December.
Come and be welcomed by characters from the past into this wonderful Jacobean house, beautifully decorated for the festive season, and be tempted by an array of exclusive gift ideas, mostly produced by local craftspeople.
Have you ever wondered how past residents of Blickling would have celebrated Christmas? Well this year you’ll be able to get a real taste. Blickling’s costumed interpretation group, the “Diggers” will be re-enacting Christmas through the ages, giving visitors a feel of what it would have been like in Jacobean times, when Henry Hobart restored the medieval and Tudor manor; in Georgian times, when the second Earl of Buckinghamshire redesigned the house; and in Queen Victoria’s reign when Lady Constance made the parterre garden.
The atmosphere of the 1930s will also be depicted, when the house was owned by Lord Lothian. Characters from this era will be in the great hall, greeting and talking with visitors;
the Victorians will be in the brown drawing room; the Georgians in the dining room and the Jacobeans in the Long Gallery- all in costume and talking about Christmas foods, decorations and customs from the 4 specific eras, giving visitors a life-like experience of the house at Christmas and illustrating how customs varied as time went by.
Designed for all ages, the characters will make visitors feel festive and welcome and, in each of the rooms they occupy, the decorations and floral arrangements will also be appropriately themed.
After wandering through the house you will be drawn in by the welcoming aroma of mulled wine and mince pies in the “Christmas courtyard”, where there will be a marquee full of Christmas gift ideas as well as festive snacks and drinks.
Christmas trees, wreaths and greenery will also be on sale along with garden gifts, hot chestnuts and other seasonal delights. Father Christmas will be in his grotto each day to take those all important orders and there will be
traditional Christmas lunches served in a decorated Lord Lothian’s study or less formally, in Hobart’s cafe on demand. The air will be full of festive cheer, with music and carols to ensure that you leave, touched by the spirit of Christmas.
Over the weekends 30 November-1 December, 7-8 December, the marquee in the “Christmas courtyard” will be brimming with Christmas crafts and gifts – a stunning selection of not-on-the-high-street gift ideas to suit all tastes and pockets. On the final weekend, 14-15 December, the marquee will be adorned with “festive food” – including a fabulous selection of delicious local fayre.
Doors open 11am-5pm and access to the Christmas Courtyard, the shop and restaurant is free to all. Entry to the house and gardens will be free for National Trust members, with usual admission fees for non-members.
Council to provide free The Health Food Centre parking on the two It is with great sadness that we had to close our business at the end of Saturdays before Christmas October.
Parking in North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) car parks will be free on the two Saturdays before Christmas (14 and 21 December, 2pm – 11pm).
The Council has decided to waive parking fees for the afternoons and evenings on 14 and 21 December to help persuade local people to buy their Christmas gifts and supplies locally, to support North Norfolk’s traders at this crucial time of year, and as a gesture of goodwill for the festive season.
On Saturdays 14 and 21 December, from 2pm shoppers will be able to stay all afternoon and evening without a ticket in any District Council– run car park, saving them up to £1- 20 an hour.
Councillor Rhodri Oliver, NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Assets, said “One of North Norfolk District Council’s key aims is to support local businesses and with Christmas being critical for traders we want to encourage people to use the wealth of shops on their doorsteps. I hope that investing in some free car parking in the run up to Christmas will encourage people to shop and to keep their shopping local.”
We had the privilege of trading in North Walsham for more than 26 years and would like to say a big thank you to all our lovely customers that have supported us over that time. We made many friends who shared their kindness with us. We shall very much miss them and our daily life at the shop.
We are only sorry that we are no longer able to provide a service for them and we ask that they continue to lead a healthy lifestyle. Thank you to everyone who has popped in to say goodbye and the lovely things that have been said – it has meant a lot to us.
Good luck to all those people that are trying to make North Walsham great again. I am sure many of us remember the vibrant, happy town that we all cared about

North Norfolk District Council seeks volunteers for new community dog warden scheme
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has launched a community dog warden scheme to crack down on dog fouling across the district and is appealing for volunteers to sign up.
Dog fouling is a huge concern for residents, not just because of the mess, but because it poses health risks that can cause stomach upset, sore throat, asthma and in extreme cases it can cause blindness.
NNDC figures show that historically, the number of complaints it receives about dog fouling increases as the evenings start to draw in. With plans to re-launch its ‘No Messing’ anti dog-fouling campaign, NNDC hopes that both the campaign and the introduction of community dog wardens will assure residents that reducing the presence of dog fouling in public places is a priority.
The role of a community dog warden is to educate irresponsible dog owners that dog fouling is not acceptable, and together with
support from NNDC’s Environmental Protection team, to promote the virtues of responsible dog ownership.
John Lee, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Environment said “When the clocks go back and the nights start to draw in, this is when we start to see a steady increase in complaints of dog fouling. Dog owners need to understand that they are posing a risk to the safety of others if they do not clear up after their dogs, and using the cover of darkness is just not acceptable. As a community dog warden, you will be a valuable part of your community and will be given the full support of NNDC’s Environmental Protection officers to help educate people on how we can make our local environment and community a cleaner place.”
Volunteers wishing to become a community dog warden will need to be friendly, open and willing to help make a difference. It is a nonconfrontational role, and wardens will not have the power to issue fixed penalty notices.

North Walsham Times 435 November 16th 2013
Volunteers can offer to work whenever they are free to give up their time, although patrols are not expected to last more than three hours at a time.
Each warden can expect to receive full training and will be provided with a high visibility jacket and a pocket notebook.
Mr Lee added ‘Although community dog wardens will not be able to issue fixed penalty notices, they will be providing regular information to NNDC’s enforcement officers. Irresponsible dog owners should be clear that we will not tolerate dog fouling in North Norfolk and we’ll have no hesitation in fining offenders.’
Volunteers can sign up online at www.northnorfolk.org/environment/ 18836.asp, or can contact the Environmental Protection team for more information on 01263 516085.

Dear Margaret,
As the UK Independence Party candidate in the recent North Walsham East County Council By-Election I would like to thank all who voted for me. In the six week campaign I had the pleasure of meeting many of the voters face to face.
Congratulations to Eric Seward who as the Town, District and now County Councillor will certainly have much to do.
Last but not least a huge thank you to my Campaign Team and all who helped in so many ways to achieve the excellent result. Lynette Comber UKIP candidate North Walsham East County Council By-Election
Jen steps up to the job of Labour's vice-chair
Cromer publisher and former by-election candidate Jen Emery was selected as Labour's new vice-chair for internal affairs at North Norfolk Labour Party's Annual General Meeting in October.
Mrs Emery, who replaces Scott Eastwood who relocated from Cromer to Yorkshire last summer, will oversee the Labour Party's recruitment of young and women voters in North Norfolk. In the role she will also be involved in fundraising and organising social events for party members.
Much of the executive team at the party will remain the same with prospective parliamentary candidate Denise Burke remaining chair, Stephen Burke as the Jen Emery - Labour's new vice-chair vice-chair for campaigns, for internal affairs Jono Read as party press officer, and Mike Gates as secretary.
In the meeting the party also paid their respects to former district councillor Don Batts who had recently passed away. Denise Burke led a minute's silence, while Mike Cullingham (a former parliamentary candidate and district councillor) led the tributes.
Mike said Don was North Norfolk District Council's first chairman on the newly-formed economic development committee, and was described as a "wonderful guy in all senses" as well as a "treasured voice of sanity" during coalition talks on the District Council in the 1990s.
Dear Margaret,
Supported by the Town Council, for the past 15 years, a Bed & Breakfast and Self-Catering Guide has been produced by a volunteer group of holiday accommodation providers in the villages around, and in North Walsham.
With a print run of up to 2,500, it is widely distributed to Tourist Information centres, post offices, village shops, libraries, schools, funeral directors, estate agents, visitor attractions. It is used not only by visitors but also by local people celebrating family events and in need of extra accommodation.
At £35 for an illustrated advertisement, it is remarkably good value, possibly because much of the work involved is voluntary. It comes in an attractive booklet and the contents are reproduced on local websites including that of North Walsham Town Council (www.northwalsham-town.co.uk).
We are happy to accept new advertisers among B & B and self-catering providers, and also from commercial providers visitors spend on meals, provisions, activities, attractions and mementoes. Commercial advertisements cost from £35 to £90 depending on size.
If any of your readers would like to be included in the 2014 Guide or would like more information, they should contact us as soon as possible via the Town Council (open 9.30am to 12.30pm tel. 01692 404114) or email (admin@northwalsham-town.co.uk). Yours faithfully, Mollie Whitworth (Co-ordinator)

Council officer graduates with merit Andrew McCloud, Assistant Coastal Engineer with North Norfolk District Council, was awarded a Foundation Degree in Civil Engineering (with merit) from University Campus Suffolk at a graduation ceremony at the end of October.
Andrew joined NNDC as Assistant Coastal Engineer in February 2013 after working as a Technician Engineer at Waveney District Council from leaving school.
Both councils have supported him in his studies and now, with further NNDC support and encouragement, his aim, following two more year’s part time study, is to achieve an honours degree.
Andrew said “It’s been hard work getting this far, but I really enjoy my job and I relish the opportunity to study engineering further. Working as a coastal engineer, trying to balance what’s physically possible alongside what’s allowable in such an ever-changing and environmentally sensitive environment is a huge challenge, and that is what makes my role so interesting. I am really thankful to both

Waveney and North Norfolk District Councils for all the support they’ve given to help me get this far.
As well as achieving his Foundation Degree, Andrew has been nominated by his course leader for the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) ‘Best Student’ regional and national awards. Each university is allowed to submit one nomination each year, and the results should be available at the end of November. And Andrew is also continuing to work with two of his tutors on one of his last year’s assignments with a view to submitting it for publication in the ICE Proceedings Maritime Engineering Journal.
earlier this year. He has already made his mark by initiating some successful projects and gave an excellent presentation at our Summer Coastal Forum. I am extremely proud of his success in gaining his degree and delighted that he is in the mix for outstanding student of the year.”
NNDC Chief Executive, Sheila Oxtoby, said “This council has a very high reputation nationally for the quality of its coastal management and expertise, and we are keen to ensure that remains the case. Having knowledgeable, well-qualified and committed staff is obviously important in that, and we are delighted that our support for Andrew as well as his hard work has been so well rewarded. He deserves every credit for the effort he has put in and which, I am sure, he will continue to put into his studies and his work in our excellent coastal team on behalf of North Norfolk coastal communities.”
NNDC Cabinet Member for the Coast, Angie Fitch-Tillett, said “We were delighted to welcome Andrew into our Coastal Team

North Norfolk building excellence in the spotlight at national awards
Three North Norfolk developments have won their way through to the finals of the national Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Awards for 2013.
Projects from Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire competed to be named the best in East Anglia, in 12 categories covering different types of building design, construction and use. Three North Norfolk developments were named regional winners, more than any other local authority at the East Anglia awards, with Cromer and District Hospital winning two categories, and they will now feature in the national finals to be held at The Brewery, London, on 12 November. The awards recognise projects that have been built to the very highest standards, and demonstrate innovation and sustainability in design.
The three North Norfolk projects nominated by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) to feature in the national finals are: • Best Small Commercial Building – The Atrium, North Walsham, which will be competing against such buildings as Denbigh Castle Visitor Centre
• Best Technical Innovation – Cromer and District Hospital, which will be up amongst the highest quality buildings, including the Shard
• Best Individual Dwelling – The Glass House, Holt, a remarkable house in competition with some other remarkable houses from around the country
• Best Community Building – Cromer and District Hospital, a national finalist in two categories, a fantastic achievement
Mozart and Bach for Cromer Christmas Concert The popular Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society return to Cromer Parish Church on Saturday 14 December at 7.30pm for their Christmas concert.
Directed by Nathan Waring the 100 strong choir will be joined by the SCCS Chamber Orchestra for what promises to be an exciting performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem.
North Norfolk building excellence in the spotlight at national awards
NNDC Cabinet Member for Planning, Benjie Cabbell Manners, said, “We’re very fortunate in North Norfolk to work with builders and architects who are determined to reach the very best standards in their work. I wish our entrants all the very best — they deserve to be honoured for the lengths they go to, and the contribution they make to our communities, especially in these difficult financial times.”

The soloists will be: Jane May-Sysum, Soprano; Freya Jacklin, Alto; Paul Smy, Tenor and Andrew Weeks, Bass.
Mozart left his stunning Requiem unfinished when he died in 1791. It was completed by Franz Xaver Sussmayer and remains a significant piece in the choral music repertoire.
The concert will also include Johan Sebastian Bach’s charming advent Cantata Sleepers, Wake! as well as Christmas carols and an opportunity for audience participation!
Seasonal refreshments will be available in the interval.

NWSCB Steal Win Against Outlaws and Spring Special Surprise
In the first division of the Star Paving Services North Norfolk League NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Paul Price and Simon Halliday have had two great results starting with a 6-4 win against Outlaws with Halliday’s top-spin taking him to a maximum. With the score at 4-4 Elliott found himself in exactly the same position as when he played up for NWSCA recently, but this time avenged his defeat to David Lake in straight and the doubles secured the win. On the adjoining table, NWSCD’s Mary Sawyer, Joe Kirkup and Philip Stone hosted Special’s Jonathan Care, Ray Howe and Martin Lawes. Stone squandered four match-point chances at 10-6 up in the third against Care and then another three at 10-7 in the fourth, but was handed victory on his eighth chance when Care served into the net at 5-10 in the fifth. NWSCD led 3-2 at the half-way stage but the five games in the second half all went the way of the visitors as Specials won 7-3. The following week it was the turn of NWSCB to face the Specials at Gimingham Village Hall. Specials led 2-1 before the next four battles all went the distance with three
In the second division, there were two wins for Cromer Dropshots against Walsham teams with Rhodri Oliver taking maximums and a share of a doubles win in both their 8-2 home win against NWSCE and their 4-6 loss away to NWSCC. The latter match saw braces for Phil Mole, James Morter and Stuart Hook (playing

going the way of NWSCB. Lawes lost out to Elliott before his spin later became a major factor in his recovery from two sets down against Price while Halliday won a very tactical game against Howe 7-11, 14-12, 5-11, 12-10, 11-7 and Price edged out Care 19-17 in an epic decider. Howe kept Specials in the game as he beat Elliott in straight to tie the match at 4-4. Halliday won a vital last singles in five against Care and with the match finishing around half-past eleven, Halliday smashed well as he teamed up with Price for a four set doubles win over Care and Howe that secured NWSCB’s 6-4 win. Also in the first division, there were two wins for NWSCA – 8-2 against Aylsham A and a 9-1 derby win against NWSCD for whom Stone had a good win in five against John Batchford.

up) while in the former NWSCE’s Joel Lodge took both Greer and Oliver to five and the duo were also taken the distance by Hook and Lodge in the doubles. NWSCE were also in action at home against Aylsham B for whom the team of Hugh Rout, Ian Potter and Neil Powell won 10-0. Powell recovered from 6-10 down in the first to beat Edna Stone 14-12, 11-7, 11-8 while a series of stunning shots showed off the promise of new team member Ben Lester. The final singles saw Potter change tactics in the fifth set to win a skilful clash against Stone. Finally Hunworth Poachers won 7-3 at home to NWSCC with Stone also playing up in that one with a great effort taking Andy Marsh the distance. Gresham’s School are currently leading the way in both divisions - NWSCA are occupying the runners-up spot in the first division, but are thirteen points adrift; while the second division is much tighter with NWSCC third but just three points behind the School.
